charming At last, spring is here! It's time to recharge your wardrobe with the freshest prints and textures. Florals are always on trend for the spring fashion season, whether they come in the form of a lively burst of colour or something more subdued. Florals can also take a sophisticated approach when done as an appliqué overlay on a sexy white mini dress – just dinner. right for a romantic dinner Pair with some bold accessories – such as an armful of copper or jewel-toned bangles, or a pair of strappy sandals – and you're set to go.

the freshman Try out your career before it begins It was voted best news media promotion in North America, and now Abbotsford’s biggest marketing competition, The Intern, has undergone a facelift. Introducing the new kid in town - The Freshman. Based on the reality show, “The Apprentice,” the idea is to provide students from the University of the Fraser Valley (including International students) who are primarily studying business or marketing, with the opportunity to put their education to practice and win the ultimate internship. Twenty students in teams of two will be assigned to a local participating business with the chance to gain real life experience over the course of the five-week program. a variety of strategies. “This year we are also incorporating charities,” said Andrew Frankling, Publisher of the Abbotsford News. “Each team will be given $100 as a base to earn as much money as possible for their charity.” The elimination program is determined through a voting system, with a judging panel for the finale at Finnegan’s Pub. Mark Evered, President and Vice-chancellor of the University of the Fraser Valley, participated in the judging process. “It’s a showcase for UFV students to put their knowledge to work and gain valuable experience while helping local non-profit groups,” says Evered. “We are proud to partner with the Abbotsford News on this innovative contest, and give heartfelt thanks to the participating charitable organizations, as well as AESC for making this possible.”

General Manager of The Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre, Jason Blumenfeld, is pleased to offer the unique opportunity to students who strive to get their foot in the door. “We want the intern to care about what they are doing, and feel a part of the team,” explains Blumenfeld. “We’re looking forward to seeing the competition take place, and it’s always exciting to get someone new involved because every day is something different.” In addition to the charities, The Freshman will give students the opportunity to market themselves to the community and document their journey using the blog Storify and abbynews.com. “A number of past competitors have great marketing jobs now through contacts they made in this contest.” explained Andrew Franklin.

Cristina Rennie Her curiosity for animals was paralleled by her curiosity for people. With more than 25 years experience and education, Cristina Rennie decided to open the barn doors of Shamrock, a place where humans can come to be healed through the use of horses.
Shamrock Counselling Cristina Rennie, founder of Shamrock Counselling, has found a way to bring her love of horses and humans together.
“I work a lot with the effects of trauma, which comes from ruptures in connection,” explains Rennie. “As the synergy between horse and human become stronger, we use this to build new experiences that often times have not been given space to grow.”
“I was one of those typical stories where a young girl falls in love with horses at first sight,” says Rennie, who grew up on a farm in Matsqui prairie. “Both sides of my family were farmers, so animals and the ethics of farm work were always a part of my life.” Rennie considers her first pony a “harsh teacher,” but explains that although it bit her, kicked her and bucked her off, she never gave up on their relationship.
Rennie uses the horses to form a bond of trust, allowing people to release themselves from the stranglehold of trauma. “The horses are willing to engage with us without force, and they can provide a physical closeness that is powerful,” remarks Rennie. “They say things to people without talking.”
From competing all over the world for equine sports, to a Masters in counselling psychology, it all comes back to the lessons learned from a young girl’s first pony.
The goals of Shamrock Counselling are described by Rennie as “big but doable, as the first foundational goal is to continue to work collaboratively with great organizations.”

Research Proves Helping Others Gives Students a Boost
DRUMROLL PLEASE...
by Michelle Watrin
At a recent ‘thank you’ evening for Envision Financial Run for Water’s sponsors and teachers held at The Reach, Dr. Kimberly SchonertReichl, shared new research on the importance of teaching empathy. The research goes hand-in-hand with the Envision Financial Run for Water free curriculum offered online.
INTRODUCING RYAN WIENS, BBA LIFE INSURANCE SPECIALIST SARDIS INSURANCE BRANCH With over six years experience providing life insurance advice Ryan is dedicated to keeping life insurance simple and easy to understand.
“Research proves that children who help others have higher academic achievement,” SchonertReichl explained. “Through blood tests we have also found students who help others are healthier with lower cholesterol counts.” Schonert-Reichl said helping others is a real key to happiness and strong emotional health, and has also been found to boost selfconfidence for the students as well as reduce bullying in schools.
"It's very exciting to be joining the Envision Insurance team. I love being able to take the 'complicated' out of purchasing life insurance and help provide our members with peace of mind." At Envision Financial, we are committed to keeping banking simple. For more than 65 years, our experts have been helping our members achieve their goals with a full range of financial products and services, including personal banking, business banking, wealth management and insurance services. Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (ASIA) teacher Traci Majewski was an attendee who has integrated dance with the Envision Financial Run for Water curriculum to teach empathy to her students. ASIA grade 12 student Bethany Menagh shared a dance after Schonert-Reichl’s interview. Menagh explained, “As we dance we try connect with the struggles of the people that Run for Water helps, we become characters as we portray their lives. It helped me understand the struggles people face.” The Envision Financial Run for Water takes place on May 26 at Mill Lake Park. Earlybird specials for the 5K, 10K, half and full marathons are on until March 31. Go to www.runforwater.ca to register or to download the curriculum for K-12 students.

Eight simple steps to tasting wine like a pro
It feels like it was a long winter and the warmth of the air is bringing people into their yards. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about planting your garden. There is nothing more enjoyable than a summer dinner menu planned and harvested from your own backyard garden. Even if you have a limited amount of space, you can still produce a great deal of food for you and your family. Small space gardening and container gardening has become extremely popular as our yards become smaller and our time to spend weeding and maintaining them shorter. The Fraser Valley’s own super garden hero, Brian Minter, at Minter Gardens in Chilliwack has some great solutions for potted herbs and vegetables. There is a wealth of options for your deck, small patio or in raised beds, in stock at their nursery.
I have found that one of the most satisfying things to grow in small space format in the summer is lettuce. There is something about making a salad from greens picked at your doorstep, and as an added bonus the containers of lettuce are often visually attractive. Minter Gardens also carries a number of dwarf berry bushes so you can harvest fruit in your own small yard. Farmers markets are a great place to buy your flower and vegetable seedlings in the spring. By purchasing from local growers, your plants will have a good chance of survival since they have been grown in this climate. If you are starting your plants from seed, there is a great opportunity this time of year to attend a local seed swap. The Seed of Diversity website (www.seeds.ca) is a great resource to find out about “seedy events”. The Mission Farmer’s Market is hosting an event on March 23rd.
1. Look at the wine and make sure it is bright and harbours no foreign particles. 2. Smell it before you swirl it and see what aromas come to mind. Are you reminded of particular fruits, flowers or vegetables? What spices or herbs? Anything else? Here is where you’ll also smell for faulty wine. If it smells like wet newsprint, a musty basement, nail polish remover or a highly populated barnyard, chances are the wine is off. 3. Swirl it. Swirling incorporates air and opens up the aromas. Swirling will also move the wine around the glass so you can see if legs or tears form. 4. Smell it after swirling. Now what comes to mind? More of the same or something different?

Deer-Proof your garden Change Plants
Creating a beautiful and bountiful garden is a popular pastime. Keep in mind that aesthetically appealing plants may be appetizing to area wildlife, including deer. If you do not want your garden to turn into all-youcan-eat buffet, take a more proactive approach. Here are a few ways to deerproof your garden.
While having almost everything you need for your next project at low and affordable prices, we also accept and re-sell quality new & used building materials and household furniture.
Filling your garden with these plants can help you maintain a beautiful, albeit untasty, environment for deer.
Fence It
Become a Member!
Keep in mind that deer can jump fences that are quite tall, but they would have to be especially motivated to jump an eight-foot-tall fence. Choose a fence that camouflages the garden well or consider thorny plants in your garden to deter deer from making the leap.

There are many organic or chemicallybased products that deer may find offensive to the taste or smell. Hot pepper, sulfur, eggs or soapy water have been successful. Blood meal or even human hair around the garden may repel deer as well.
