Chilliwack RCMP are warning potential buyers of native art to beware of stolen goods that could be on the market, following a Feb. 10 residential break-and-enter in the Ryder Lake area, during which thousands of dollars of hand-carved native art and jewelry was stolen. Approximately 10 masks were taken, with a value of over $10,000. A large amount of native gold and silver jewelry was also stolen.

A man who was found severely beaten in Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford was airlifted to hospital in critical condition on Wednesday morning. Abbotsford Police initially received reports of a stabbing at about 4 a.m., but when they arrived on the scene, they discovered a 30-year-old man who was the victim of a brutal beating. ROTARY CORNER MARCH IS LITERACY MONTH Rotary International puts a strong emphasis on literacy, and all the benefits that it brings to both the individuals AND the community they live in. More than 770 million adults worldwide do not know how to read. Rotary’s work in literacy has included rebuilding schools destroyed by natural disasters in Sri Lanka and Haiti, partnering with the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library to promote early childhood reading, and teaching students to read and write through the concentrated language encounter method in Brazil and Turkey. The problem goes far beyond the inability to decipher words on a page. In an increasingly complex world, poor reading comprehension condemns adults to the lowest rungs of society. We are fortunate in Canada to have one of the best rates of literacy in the world. However, even in Canada being literate can be a challenge. Our sister club, the Rotary Club of AbbotsfordSumas, has taken this commitment and turned it into action by funding the After School Program at Godson Elementary here in Abbotsford. This club has supported this program for the past three years, and continues to do so. The program includes reading, writing, arts, and crafts. One aspect of the After School Program is the Christmas Store, which allows each student to pick a gift for a family member, funded by the club. The After School Program has assisted in increasing the overall literacy rate for the school. Near or far, Rotary members are committed to increasing literacy. Abbotsford Police have stepped up traffic enforcement this year, with one of their 2012 goals being the reduction of traffic-related injuries by 25 per cent. The department recorded 13 vehiclerelated deaths – most of them pedestrians – in 2010 and four in 2011.

Unstatesmanlike departure The latest act on the stage of political theatre in this province should be viewed with some dismay. On Monday, long-serving Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen stood in the legislature, lambasted his party and its leader, announced his resignation from the Liberal party, and his new membership with the BC Conservatives. It was a bombshell, designed to cause maximum discomfort and damage to the Liberals, much to the delight of the NDP party and the upstart Tories. It was no great secret that van Dongen was deeply disgruntled after being dropped from cabinet as solicitor general three years ago, following a pair of excessive speeding tickets. Insiders are now suggesting that’s the primary reason behind his highly public defection, rather than the party integrity issues he claimed during his speech in the legislature. Among the reasons he gave for his dramatic departure was the government’s payment of $6 million in legal fees for the two men who pleaded guilty in the BC Rail corruption case. Really? That was 18 months ago.
What was the breaking point? The cancellation of the $35-million B.C. Place naming deal with Telus? Confounding perhaps, but hardly heinous. The leadership of Christy Clark? Compared to the wobbly-wheeled chariot of Gordon Campbell in his final year? “Standing on principle” seems to be politically expedient here, which is surprising, given van Dongen’s reputation as a straightshooting, sincere individual. The most honourable approach would have been for van Dongen to resign his seat, and run again in a byelection. He could have also simply quit the Liberals and sat as an independent. While he’s certainly not the first politician to jump ship in mid-term, it undermines the trust of those who voted for someone who carried the banner of one party, and suddenly defects to another. Van Dongen was elected as a Liberal, not a Conservative. A statesman would have stepped back quietly, reserving comment and a shift in political affiliation for the next election. But then again, politics in British Columbia is hardly known for statesmanship.

B.C. Views Both NDP leader Adrian Dix and his education critic Robin Austin have recently tried to sell the media a fictitious story about the party’s successful history of negotiations with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. With the ritual combat between the BCTF and the B.C. government flaring once again in early March, Dix bragged to reporters that the last time he was involved in teacher talks, it resulted in a 0-0-2 wage settlement. That was in 1998, when Dix was working for then-premier Glen Clark. The real 1998 story is useful, because then as now, the B.C. government was in a financial squeeze and looking at a huge set of negotiations with government unions in health and other sectors as well as education. Glen Clark, an ex-industrial union organizer, was known for pushing nego-
tiators aside and taking control of hot files. The premier’s office took the lead in teacher talks, trying to set a strong precedent for low wage settlements similar to today’s “net zero” mandate. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, representing the school districts, was marginalized and treated with the same disdain that the BCTF still reserves for them. And the result was an agreement where the union bartered higher wages for hundreds more positions and other benefit gains. This was one of the key mistakes that led to today’s showdown over class size and composition. Once trustees got a look at the premier’s 1998 deal, they refused to sign. For the first and only time, the government had to legislate the settlement on school boards. The BCTF membership endorsed the 1998 deal by a large margin, and it did indeed set the tone for other union settlements in the late 1990s. Press reports at the time put the total cost of this supposed wage freeze at an 11-per-cent increase in the provincial payroll. Before I get into the court battles that followed after the NDP government was dumped, there is a business
principle here. One of the first things I had to learn as a private sector manager is that if you don’t control your budget, you aren’t really a manager. And no one who lets authority over staffing levels slip away can possibly control their budget.

Liberals took back in 2002, with legislation that removed class size and composition from bargaining. In the constantly repeated BCTF rhetoric, this was the “illegal stripping” of union contract terms that was struck down in April, 2011 by the B.C. Supreme Court. A closer reading of Justice Susan
Griffin’s decision shows that she gave Education Minister George Abbott an out. If the province replaces staffing level bargaining with “an equivalent process of good faith consultations or negotiation, then the legislation might not be an interference with freedom of association….” Bill 22 was written with this decision in mind, reasserting the government’s control over the payroll with a $165million fund for special needs and a mediator to demonstrate those “good faith consultations.” University of Victoria business professor Ken Thornicroft noted last week that ceding control over class size to the union amounts to delegating authority over spending to someone who is not elected. The legality of that will no doubt be examined in the BCTF’s next courtroom assault on the provincial treasury. It’s an important comparison for voters. Which party is better able to represent the public interest in hardball negotiations with 300,000 unionized employees? Leaving Liberals was obvious decision
I admire John Van Dongen. Leaving the Liberals was not an easy decision for him but an obvious one. As Member of Parliament for Abbotsford for 13 years
I had many occasions to work with John and was always pleased with his honesty and forthright character and in his desire to improve Abbotsford. It is more and more
obvious that the B.C. Liberals time has expired and that panic politics are setting in. Bad decisions, caucus disunity and lack of leadership are common examples of
the sinking ship. It is similar to the last months of the Social Credit and NDP governments. Thanks to John and many other former B.C. Liberals, the Conservative Party
is rising quickly and will be B.C.’s government at some point. Hopefully, that will be sooner than later, but it is up to all of us to get on board. Randy White
Don’t gift-wrap the election for NDP
As a staunch right-winger, huge fan of Preston Manning, and early Reform Party volunteer for both John Cummins and Paul Forseth, I cannot express how deeply disappointed I am with the foolish and opportunistic BC Conservative Party. A split on the right is simply not justified, and right-of-centre voters should stick with the highly successful coalition strategy. The Reform Party split the right federally, but for me the game changer was “western
alienation.” Reform was in many ways anti-establishment, bucking the eastern domination of Canada and forging a more democratic ethos nationwide. It was a multi-dimensional cause worth fighting for. Our prime minister is from Alberta, and we have Reform to thank for that. Let’s not spoil the legacy of Reform in this province by gift-wrapping the election for the NDP. There is no worthy cause to the Cummins campaign. It’s a short-term strategy to leverage

I travel quite extensively and have met many people who know of our city because of our amazing golf course. Ledgeview’s Junior Golf Program and the much talked about “First Tee” Initiatives contribute to our youth in such a positive way. Ledgeview can claim fame to many great young players, including amongst them Nick Taylor, who became the world’s top-ranked amateur golfer. There are countless other fine golfers, champions, leaders, and good people who contribute to our community. Ledgeview is too much of an invaluable asset to jeopardize. Marketing to kids is a great idea Re: Letter, “Mothball or sell AESC,” by Gerda Peachey. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t bother responding to a letter so glib. Your comment about the Heat kids’ day tickets being free is inaccurate, misleading to readers and completely inexcusable. For the record, the tickets were $10 each, while parents who brought four kids to the game got a free seat. With the teachers on strike that day, someone had to provide
transportation and supervision. The rink was near capacity, the concessions were very busy, and the kids had fun. Best of all there was lots of revenue generated. Marketing to the kids is a great idea, and had you been in attendance, you would have accomplished two things. You wouldn’t have escaped having fun, and you would know what you are talking about. Your suggestion that the city mothball or sell the AESC is completely daft. R. Marr

Dorey’s OT goal helps Pilots get even with Delta PIJHL final tied at 2-2 Justin Dorey’s goal early in the second overtime period lifted the Abbotsford Pilots to a 4-3 victory over the Delta Ice Hawks on Monday evening at MSA Arena. The dramatic triumph enabled the Pilots to draw even with the Ice Hawks in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League championship series, at two wins apiece. The Ice Hawks had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Cody Fidgett
and Tanner Gattinger, but the Pilots battled back to knot the score 3-3, with Riley Lamb (2) and Kyle Star supplying the offence. The first OT settled nothing, but Dorey sent the local fans home happy when he beat Delta goalie Glenn Ferguson at the 2:12 mark of the second sudden-death session. Game 5 was on Tuesday, but the result was unavailable at press time. Game 6 goes Friday at MSA Arena at 7:30 p.m.

University of the Fraser Valley men's basketball coach Barnaby Craddock is a big believer in recruiting players who have a track record of winning. Back in 2008, Craddock's first full recruiting class for the Cascades featured current standouts Joel Friesen and Jasper Moedt. Both players were coming off a provincial AAA high school title with Abbotsford's Yale Lions, and both players have matured into big-time contributors who helped UFV to a fourth-place finish at nationals this past season. Craddock is hopeful that his latest signee, 6'5" forward Luke Morris, follows that developmental arc. Morris led the Mission Secondary Roadrunners to a B.C. AA crown this season, and picked up MVP honours at the provincial tourney. "We want to recruit guys who can win a national championship, and he's definitely a winner above all," Craddock said of Morris. "Just look at the guys like Jasper and Joel. You can see how that ability to win through high school has influenced their ability to win at the CIS level." Morris averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game with the Roadrunners, but Craddock doesn't see him as a traditional back-to-the-basket post player. His all-around skill set will allow him to thrive on the perimeter as well. "He's a triple-double threat – he can shoot, pass and rebound," Craddock said. Morris joins Rav Dhaliwal (6'8" centre, Tamanawis) and Max Neuman (6'3" shooting guard, Maple Ridge) in Craddock's 2012 high school recruiting class. "I've watched UFV play many times over the last few years and love how they compete and play as a team," Morris said in a press release. "I'm looking forward to being a part of that."

Abbotsford rugby players Jorden Best and Spencer Miller led the B.C. elite youth sevens side to the championship at the prestigious Hong Kong International Sevens tournament last week.

He is Predeceased by wife Kay in 1996; survived by his 4 children, Linda Ball of Mexico, son Dale of Mission, daughter Sandy(Gerry) Masuda of New Westminster and daughter Heather of Mission; grandson Derek Ball of Kirkland Lake Ontario; brother Wallace of Chilliwack. Beaton retired to Mission in 1969 and will be remembered for his community work with the Canadian Red Cross blood donor clinic and the Royal Canadian Legion poppy fund, as well as many other organizations. The family would like to thank the staff at Pleasant View care home for their kind and compassionate care of Beaton over the last year and a very special thank you to Lynnette Smith. Mary Reimer, long-time resident of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully at the Tabor Home on Monday, March 26, 2012 at the age of 100 years. Predeceased by her husband of 49 years Jacob in 1984 and by 12 siblings. Mary is survived by her daughter Lenora (Orville) Adrian of

At Stan’s request, no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mission Hospice Society in Stan’s memory would be appreciated.
