A touching message from a sibling marks the site where a 51-year-old Mission man was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday night while he was walking along Highway 11. “R.I.P. my brother. I love you and will miss you so much,â€? states the note taped to a plastic container ďŹ lled with owers. The small memorial is located on a highway median just south of Harris Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said Abbotsford Police began receiving reports at about 8:40 p.m. that a man was hitchhiking or walking dangerously close to trafďŹ c in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 VIDLEIONE (the Abbotsford-Mission HighON ws.com way). abbyne Moments later, callers advised that the man had been hit by a vehicle. OfďŹ cers found the man dead at the scene, and two drivers indicated they had struck him. The ďŹ rst was a Hyundai and the second was a Saturn. The motorists co-operated with police but were shaken from the incident. The deceased man’s name has not yet been released. MacDonald said police are still trying to piece together the man’s actions before the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225. This is Abbotsford’s second pedestrian fatality this year. Amarjit Singh Sidhu, 74, was struck and killed by a van on March 27 while walking along Blueridge Drive.

An Abbotsford grandmother credited with saving her family of 10 from a house fire early Sunday morning was overwhelmed with emotion the next day as she recalled the experience. Kulwant Brar wiped away tears as she sat outside the charred home at 31866 Mayne Ave. Neighbour and close family friend Nav Brar, who translated her words, said Kulwant was still overcome by the thought of what could have happened. “They were all sleeping. They had no idea what was going on,� Kulwant said of the family members in the home at the time of the blaze. Kulwant and her husband, Herbans, share the house with their three sons and their wives, as well as two grandsons – a three-month-old and a threeyear-old. Dwight Grose’s absence from the downtown was noticed almost immediately. Not because garbage was piling up, but because business owners missed the affable litter control worker. “Dwight is just always so pleasant, and he knows all the merchants by name, and they know him,� said Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, which employs Dwight through an arrangement with the MSA Society for Community Living. “He keeps the downtown clean and keeps an eye on things,� she said. “He is thrilled to have his job – he takes huge pride in it.� She was one of the first to learn of his accident. Dwight was riding his bike when he was hit by a car on Nov. 30. He was taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and as soon as Dwight learned that he needed surgery, his immediate concern was that his work be informed that he wouldn’t make it in the next day. The hospital called Stewart on Dwight’s behalf, and he went into surgery to have his

follow-ups to see how he was doing. “He’s just a fixture in the downtown,� she explained, “and he’s someone who never complains about life at all.� He got back to work last
week, and on Thursday morning Dwight was called to a special meeting at the ADBA office. Abbotsford Police Deputy Chief Rick Lucy was there, with a shiny mountain bike for him, and a new helmet. “We (members of the APD) were touched by his story, and we do what we can to help,� said Lucy. “We love what the ADBA is doing for the city.� He picked out the new wheels for Dwight – it was a found property item that would otherwise have gone to auction. Dwight recalled the accident, and remarked that his old bike is “toast,� and how impressed he was by the new one from the APD. “I’m glad to be back to work.� His ankle is a lot better, but he says, “I’m still exercising it. “I’m glad to be back to work. I don’t tolerate the mess down here,� he explained. “I keep the city clean. “If I see needles and stuff down here, I clean it up.� He is 52 (53 in June), and will apparently remain a fixture in downtown Abbotsford for years to come. “I plan to retire in 13 years,� he said.

Three Alarm race nears
With a different venue, fresh events and new prizes, organizers are ramping up for the 2012 running of the Three Alarm Adventure Race. The fourth annual event moves to Sumas Prairie this year, near Barrowtown and McDonald Park. The teams of four pass checkpoints while running, canoeing and mountain biking, and
get their passports stamped along the way. It’s five hours on a challenging course across Abbotsford countryside. The race will be held on May 13, and the registration deadline is May 5 at 5 p.m. It is a benefit for the Abbotsford Firefighters Burn Fund, and thanks to the generous sponsorship of local merchants, it
raised $10,000 for the fund last year. That also adds a firefighting theme to the events, and last year’s teams found themselves pushing firetrucks and running obstacle courses in full firefighter turnout gear. Last year there were 26 teams – 14 in the competitive division, eight in the recreational class and four in the

If they approach me in a crowded public place I’ll start giving them my own sob story — I’ve got this humongous mortgage, car payment, bike payment, property taxes, huge fuel bill for having to commute across the valley to work; they usually start backing away then.... and RUN when I say I was hoping THEY could give me a few bucks! Seriously, it works!

I have my favorite guy in mission so polite and funny I let him take my cart back and he gets the dollar. At Xmas I went and bought him a toque and mitts and wool socks. Really great guy. If they are agressive I do not give anything. Once my husband gave five dollars to a guy and this panhandler said he would pay him back. About two weeks later my husband went to the store and this panhandler came up and gave him his five bucks back. Could not believe it and to this day my husband still has that five bucks in his wallet for good luck. So the lesson is, there is good and bad on all and what you give comes back to you in the most amazing way.

deputy fire chief with Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, said the blaze began in the garage, and damage to the home, three vehicles and a neighbouring house is estimated at $100,000. The cause is still under investigation. It is believed that the opening of the garage door that Kulwant heard was due to the fire melting electrical wires. The family is now staying in another home they own – which they had planned to rent out – while their house is repaired. They have lost most of their belongings to smoke and fire damage, but a neighbour said the community is uniting to help them replace many of those items.

Family in Cook Off
Another Abbotsford family is taking part in the Family Cook Off reality TV competition being broadcast on the Food Network. The four participants were cousins Mike Vulgaris, Teli Kardakaris and Afroditi Moschonas with her mother Mahe Makris. They chose their group name to be The Kourtessis Family – after the maiden name of Mahe and also Teli and Mike’s mothers. “All of our moms are sisters and we really wanted to pay some respect to our grandparents,” said Moschonas. She has been better known as “Diti,” a fixture at the Rendezvous Restaurant – owned by her parents Hercules and Mahe Makris, and locally renowned for traditional Greek cuisine. The theme they chose for the competition was the olive, with a nod to their family’s roots in Corfu, Greece. During the show, two family members prepare an entree, while the other two create a dessert. Both meals are judged by two celebrity chefs, and rated on a scale of
1 to 10. They compete against another family team. The team with the most points by the second round is the winner, and receives a $1,000 grocery gift card. The show is billed “Kourtessis vs Guzzo – Battle of the Food Empires.” The Kourtessis cousins prepared lamb chops and loukoumades, billed by the network “Greek meals of mythic proportions.”

Failure of justice There are many cases before the courts that leave one flabbergasted at the lack of justice being meted out. Such is the situation involving 80-year-old Gerald McDonald. Last year, the North Delta grandfather died just two weeks after a vicious attack at his home. The octogenarian was badly beaten with baseball bats wielded by a group of people intent on inflicting property damage following a verbal altercation with McDonald’s son. Two weeks later, McDonald was dead from a heart attack and a B.C. coroner makes no bones about linking the two events. Coroner Kate Corcoran listed the cause of death as “homicide.” She also said that “considering the facts of this investigation, it is reasonable to conclude that the September 20, 2011 assault was the cause of the cascading events that led to Mr. McDonald’s demise.” So those responsible for the
assault will be held accountable for the results of their actions, right? Wrong. According to the B.C. Criminal Justice Branch, only the findings from an autopsy can be used to consider homicide charges. In McDonald’s case, the autopsy report makes no link between the attack on the senior and his death. This alone would be extremely difficult for McDonald’s family to come to terms with. But then this sucker punch: Assault charges in McDonald’s attack are also not being considered. Crown counsel does not believe it has enough evidence to win a conviction. An often-used legal quote (attributed to Lord Chief Justice Hewart) notes that “justice should not only be done, but should manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done.” For Gerald McDonald, our system has failed miserably on both counts. – Black Press

Other Hand “If I had a million dollars” sing the Barenaked Ladies, “I’d buy you a monkey (haven’t you always wanted a monkey?)” Seems that someone who holds a ticket sold in Abbotsford, thanks to Friday evening’s Lotto Max draw, can now buy a whole bunch of them. Personally, a monkey would be about the last thing I’d get were I so fortunate to have won a 30-very-large windfall. Regrettably, when my ticket was scanned, instead of the Canadian singing group’s refrain echoing in my ear, all I got was “Not a Winner!” And there went, at least for this week, my thoughts of a new Bentley convertible, a yacht and perhaps a little hideaway in the south of France. So what would you do if you won $30 million (and you can bet whoever did isn’t wasting any time reading this, or
waiting for my suggestions on what to do with the money)? Regardless, I am going to offer a little neighbourly advice (and anyone within 20 miles of my house who wins $30 million is definitely a close neighbour) on what to do with all those dollars. First of all, it’s free and easy money, so park $25 million in something very secure for at least a year, and take the remaining five and live like a lottery winner for a while. Go buy that fancy car, the big boat, a beachfront condo in Maui, go on an exotic vacation and donate a bunch to charity. Feel free to blow the $5 million, because after doing it you will come down from your euphoric high and still have lots left to do the sensible things such as ensuring your grandchildren are set for life, or contributing to world peace, while the remaining funds are wisely invested for your future. Because while $25 or $30 million sounds like a lot, and it is, you still aren’t Jimmy Pattison, who has something like a thousand million, three or so times over. There won’t be any
250-foot yachts in your future, nor personal jets (affordable to buy, horrendously expensive to keep in the air), but you have certainly risen above the mundane so far as the colour of your credit cards. Another practical point to keep in

Still plenty to keep you going into old age, and enough to replace the exotic car every couple of years. The biggest thing about discovering you suddenly have a pile of money, however, is that with the freedom to do almost whatever your little heart
desires, the personality of a winner often changes dramatically. Try not to do that. It isn’t like you need to be smug in your success. All you did was buy a ticket, not invent the wheel or discover a cure for cancer. So ‘get real’ during your first year of financial freedom, and get back down to Earth after the fun has been done. Enjoy your new-found wealth, but always remember that it wasn’t you but ‘lady luck’ who created the new future. Be the same person you were before, because all that’s really changed is your bank account, and your ability to live out your dreams. So there you have it … my version of Dear Abby advice. I, on the other hand, am thinking with all that money, maybe a monkey or a lemur or … nah, I’d still go with the boats and cars and airplanes! Whoever you are, enjoy the money and maybe next week it’ll be my fortune to turn fantasy into reality.

letters Growth requires some level of risk After having read Gerda Peachey’s March 22 letter, I contemplated her argument that the AESC should be either “mothballed” or sold. The AESC has indeed seen a significant decrease in revenue compared to its management’s predictions. However, judging a company’s future revenue during an economic period of instability cannot be an accurate method of determining its overall community value. The venue opened in 2009 in accordance with the 2006 referendum to fund three community projects (including the AESC). With such a new project, constructed during a period of economic instability, it is expected that the venue will not meet the public’s expectations. Nonetheless, shutting the venue down will result in a more drastic waste of taxpayers’ money, as the space will remain empty, while it could be deriving some revenue. There is some profit benefited by families taking advantage of free children admission, reasonably priced food, child-friendly mascots and the overall thrill of a community team sporting game. This cheap night out during a period of financial crunches can be taken as a compromise, decreasing overall profit by filling a portion of seats at no charge, while drawing in another audience which pay on average $18, excluding any merchandise purchases or food. This year there will be numerous big name events (such as Cirque du Soleil) and smaller name events will be taking place at the AESC, which is fuelled and funded by consumers purchasing tickets. In order for a community to expand, it must take some aspects of risk; it is completely uncertain whether a decision will turn out as planned. However, with time and publicity, the venue has the possibility to begin generating a profit. Considering the global economy, the venue is merely surviving, as are numerous other companies in Abbotsford. Taylor Johnson

$30 million ticket sold in Abby Winner has not yet come forward A $30 million lottery prize won in Abbotsford remained unclaimed as of yesterday. The earliest the winner can step forward is today (Tuesday), as B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC) offices were closed for the Easter holiday long weekend. BCLC spokesman Chris Fairclough said he could not reveal which retailer sold the winning Lotto Max ticket – announced in Friday’s draw – until after the recipient steps forward. The winner has up to a year to claim his or her prize. Fairclough said the largest lottery prize ever won in B.C. is a $50 million Lotto Max prize from October 2010. The record in Canada is a $54 million 6/49 pot won in Alberta in October 2005. Former big lottery winners from Abbotsford include Ivan Catchpaw, who claimed a $9.5 million Lotto Max jackpot in March 2010, and Rachel Paimen, who won $2 million that same month in BC/49. Decades of hit musicals will be featured in the latest production from Calvin Dyck and his Songs, Strings & Steps series. Titled Hits From Broadway, the 12th annual variety show features songs from such classics as Fiddler on the Roof and Oliver, to more contemporary shows including Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Lion King. Dyck, a local violinist, music teacher and showman, said he Googled the top 100 shows. From that list he picked some of the classic songs that even casual theatre fan will recognize. As in prior shows in the popular series, it features singers, dancers, music, colourful costumes and even audience participation, including a sing-along of Edelweiss from the Sound of Music. The performers are a mix of amateurs, professionals and special guests. Abbotsford’s Charlene Hart, a former contestant on the television show So You Think You Can Dance will perform to the music from Phantom and local singer Shane Wiebe returns to perform a

Holmes, 30, has been charged with two counts each of assault, uttering threats, sexual assault and unlawful confinement. It is alleged that both women were contacted through postings on Craigslist and each went on separate occasions to the suspect’s apartment. They were not permitted to leave and were sexually assaulted, police allege. One woman reported that the incident happened on Feb. 27, and that led police to a previous incident from Feb. 1. According to the provincial court database, Holmes has previously been convicted of assault in Terrace; assault, mischief and breach of probation in Williams Lake; and breach of probation in Abbotsford.

An unprecedented offensive explosion on Sunday afternoon powered the Abbotsford Heat to a playoff berth. The Heat blew out the Charlotte Checkers 8-2 on the road, establishing a new franchise record for goals in a game. The previous mark was seven, set on Oct. 16, 2009 against the Milwaukee Admirals. After Ben Walter and Paul Byron scored in the first period, the Heat took over in the middle frame, racking up five goals to put the game away. Two came off the stick of the red-hot Krys Kolanos, while Hugh Jessiman, Adam Estoclet and Byron also tallied. Riley Nash replied for the Checkers. Dustin Sylvester made it 8-1 early in the third period, and Checkers captain Brett Sutter – a former member of the Heat – rounded out the scoring with a late goal. The Kolanos-ByronSylvester line has been nearly unstoppable since head coach Troy Ward put them together last week, and they combined for five goals, seven assists and 12 points in Sunday’s win. Kolanos has scored a goal in each of the seven games the trio has been together. The Heat, coming off a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Checkers on Saturday, out-shot Charlotte 40-24. Danny Taylor was between the pipes for both triumphs, stepping up in the absence of Leland Irving, who did not make the road trip after his wife Ashley gave birth to a daughter on Thursday.
Taylor has won four consecutive starts, boasting a 1.49 goalsagainst average and a .940 save percentage during that stretch. The Heat (40-26-35, 88 points) needed just a single point on Sunday to clinch a playoff spot for the second time in three seasons in Abbotsford, and they did one better than that. HOGETERP, Maria Hendrika (Groeneweg) September 30, 1938 April 04, 2012 After a lengthy battle with cancer, the Lord called our beloved wife, mother, Oma, and sister home to be with Him at the age of 73. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Hendrik (Henry) Hogeterp Jr., and her children; Christina (Terence), Tim (Edna), her grandchildren Hanna, Kristen, Lucas, Mattias, and Elliott, and a number of her siblings. Rita was born in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands, and was the youngest of 10 siblings. She immigrated to California in 1956,
and later moved to Washington State. She met Henry, the love of her life, through a Christian dating service. They were married January 5, 1973 and moved to Abbotsford. Rita was a very giving person always putting others needs in front of her own. She spent countless hours volunteering at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store, MCC, and contributed to over 50,000 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Her lasting legacy is her faith in her Lord and service to others. She loved her family greatly, was a very devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed tremendously by all her family and friends. A viewing will take place from 6:00-8:00PM Tuesday April 10, 2012 at Alternatives Funeral Home 3070-275A St., Aldergrove. A celebration of Rita’s life will be held at Immanuel Covenant Reformed Church 35063 Page Rd., Wednesday April 11, 2012 at 1:00pm. LEWIN (nee GIESBRECHT) KATHARIENA 1918-2012 Kathariena Lewin passed away peacefully in her 94th year after a brief illness. Kathariena was born on September 9th 1918 in Petrovka, Russia to Jacob and Anna Giesbrecht. She and her family immigrated to Canada when she was eight years old and settled in Anaheim, Sask. She married John Lewin in May 1937 and they lived in Middle Lake, and Humboldt, Sask., and Abbotsford, BC. She was predeceased by her husband John Lewin in 1996 and her brothers Jacob, David, Peter and Frank. She leaves behind her brother Abraham (Agnes) Giesbrecht and sisterin-law Katie Giesbrecht, four children Beatrice (Bill) Hildebrand, Edward (Pearl) Lewin, Margaret (Walter) Cornies and Terry (Hugh) Hardless, eight grandchildren Brenda (Hildebrand) Peters, Bart Hildebrand, Kelly (Lewin) Allen, Kevin Lewin, Chad Cornies, Ebony (Hardless) Marconato, Clementine (Hardless) Huff & Nathan Hardless and seven great-grandchildren Mikaela, Amanda, Danika, Jacqueline, Alexandria, John and Nico. Mom enjoyed reading and studying her Holy Bible, sewing, crocheting, knitting, gardening, travelling, and being a homemaker. She worked at Menno Home as a Practical Nurse, travelled to the Holy Land in 1972 and sang in the Happy Gang. She was a devoted Christian and member of the Church of God (Seventh Day). The family extends a special thank you to Dr. G. Lewis and the nurses on Baker 3 for their compassion & special care for Mom during her brief stay at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 from 7-9:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford where a Celebration of life will be held on Thursday, April 12th 2012 at 12 noon. Jim passed away peacefully on April 2, 2012 at the age of 80. He was at home, which was his wish, surrounded by the love of his family with his wife of over 60 years by his side. His spirit won the battle with cancer but his body could not. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife Nora, daughters Wendy, Laurie (Mike), Sue (Scott), daughterin-law Karen, niece Trudy and his grandchildren Katie (Adam), Jesse, Dylan (Shannon), Jordy (Debbie), Brodie (Kandis), Taylor (Elora) and 7 great grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Jack, nieces, nephews and cousins, his cat Joey and too many friends to count. Sadly, Jim was predeceased by his only son Doug, infant great granddaughter Emersyn, brother Reg, son-in-law Cary and his parents Ernest and Florence. Jim loved and treasured his family who were always foremost in his mind. He was as proud of them as they were of him. Jim’s other great loves included flying, fishing, golfing, boating, RV’ing, photography and especially people. Jim was born in Edmonton, raised in Langley and eventually settled in Abbotsford in 1963. Following his retirement from Trans Mountain Pipeline (now Kinder Morgan), Jim and Nora travelled extensively throughout the world and established lasting friendships wherever they went. They were Snowbirds, but their special place was in Oroville on Osoyoos Lake where the family vacationed for many years. Jim had a particular passion for flying. He was a lifetime member of the Abbotsford Flying Club and served as a director of the Abbotsford Air Show for many years. Jim was a jack, and master, of all trades. He could fix anything. He was a man of many words and loved to tell stories and share laughter. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on April 14, 2012 at the Abbotsford Flying Club 30540 Approach Drive, at 2:00 p.m. He will be honored with a flyby tribute by his buddies. Jim’s family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Worthington Pavilion and will be forever grateful to Dr. Neil Hilliard and Lynn Curry of the Hospice Palliative Care Team for making it possible for Jim to come home.
