18,000 birds lost in poultry barn blaze 45 firefighters from five halls battle Sunday evening fire on Ross Road A barn fire at a poultry farm at 4284 Ross Rd. on Sunday night resulted in the loss of some 18,000 chickens. When Abbotsford Fire Rescue firefighters arrived on scene the barn was already fully involved. Crews worked to contain it to that building, and not let it spread to five other barns on the property. The operation is owned by Rossdown Farms. There were 45 firefighters from five different halls involved in the effort. The 50x300-foot barn was so full of smoke and flames they could only attack it from the exterior. A farm worker was the first to report the blaze, as he saw fire and sparks coming from a fan attached to the barn. The fire was first reported at 9:08 p.m. The barn was destroyed and the losses were estimated at $500,000, according to an Abbotsford Fire Rescue press release. Firefighters used their fans to assist the farmer in keeping air circulating in his remaining barns, as power to them was knocked out by the fire. An Abbotsford Fire Rescue spokesman said the fire is not considered suspicious.

Teachers debate withdrawal of extracurricular activities Mission educators decide to stop non-teaching services Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Class trips, sporting events and even graduation ceremonies are in jeopardy as B.C. teachers are debating whether a province-wide withdrawal from extracurricular activities should take place. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation is currently hosting its annual general meeting in Vancouver and is expected to decide what actions to take in response to the provincial government’s approval of Bill 22, which legislated teachers back to work. Possible actions include an illegal strike, taking the province to court and halting extracurricular DUNTON activities. A decision is expected by Tuesday evening. Whatever delegates decide will go to a vote by the full membership later in the week. Many teachers’ associations, including Mission, have already voted to withhold after-school activities. But it is unclear whether that decision will change, depending on the final outcome of the BCTF discussions. The current job action won’t affect most of Mission’s more prominent school sports — Mission secondary’s senior boys basketball and football teams won the provincials this year — but it is unknown what will happen with other sports teams and major school events

taken place. “Abbotsford did not vote to withdraw extracurricular, but there’s been lots of discussions around that and individual members are making individual decisions. It sounds like a lot of them are making the decision to no longer volunteer, which is their right,” explained Jeff Dunton, president of the Abbotsford District Teachers’

Association. He is among 15 delegates representing the local group at the AGM. When asked if a reduction in teachers services was a topic of debate at the AGM, Dunton was vague in his reply. “We are discussing everything.” He said he could not comment on the details until the BCTF officially releases the information. BCTF president Susan Lambert has expressed outrage over the passing of Bill 22 last week, which teachers may challenge in the courts. The bill prevents teachers from striking and orders a cooling-off period until August. It also calls for a mediator to be brought in to help with contract negotiations. B.C. teachers have been without a contract since last June. The government has maintained a “net zero” mandate, meaning that any contract agreements result in no additional costs to employers. Teachers began limited job action in September, including refusing to complete report cards, and earlier this month they walked off the job for three days. While Dunton would not comment on any of the discussions, he did say that Rick Guenther’s campaign for president was “going well.” Guenther, an Abbotsford teacher who is on the BCTF board as a member at large, is challenging current president Lambert for the position. Chris Drouillard from 100 Mile House is also running.

Two incidents of sexual assault Women attacked while inside man’s apartment An Abbotsford man faces eight charges for alleged sex assaults on two women who were selling massage services. Const. Ian MacDonald said Abbotsford Police investigated a Feb. 27 incident involving a 30-year-old man, and that led them to a second incident that happened on Feb. 1. Both women were contacted through list-

ings on Craigslist, both went to his apartment, were not permitted to leave and were sexually assaulted, police allege. The accused is in custody, appearing in Abbotsford Provincial Court on Wednesday. Abbotsford police recommended four charges in each case, two each of forcible confinement, uttering threats, assault and sexual assault.

MacDonald said the accused intimated to the women that he had a weapon in each case. “It’s important to commend the bravery of the women who came forward to work with police to see this man is held accountable for his actions, and do their part to safeguard other women,” said MacDonald.

NewsBytes NEW TEST FOR ELDERLY DRIVERS Drivers more than 80 years old who fail a computerized test of their mental ability will now be offered a road test before they have to surrender their licences. Attorney General Shirley Bond announced the road test option Monday after complaints from people who lost their driving privileges based on a computer test called DriveABLE. Some elderly people with little computer experience found the touch-screen tests of cognitive ability to be an unfamiliar and unfair way to test them. The DriveABLE test is administered on referral from doctors who detect cognitive impairment in patients that may affect their driving. Bond said those who failed the on-screen test in the past six months will be offered a free road test, using a test car with dual brakes. Those who failed more than six months ago have to see their doctor before being reassessed. Bond also announced that a new DriveABLE assessment centre will be opened in Cranbrook, making 18 locations in B.C., including Abbotsford. The DriveABLE test uses a terminal with a touch screen to measure mental abilities. In the first stage, the driver holds down a button until a shape appears on either the left of right side of the screen. The subject has to release the button and touch the shape as quickly as possible, to test reaction time.

VANDALS SOUGHT Abbotsford police are on the hunt for suspects after the Twisters Gymnasium building, located at Exhibition Park, was vandalized. Graffiti has been spray-painted along the back of the building, including several swastikas, the words “white power” and the number 666. Police are investigating the incident.

Lisa Dudley, 37, and Guthrie McKay, 33, were shot in their rural home in September 2008, which according to a statement of facts entered Monday in court, had housed a marijuana grow operation. Woodruff said he was going to be the shooter, and went to the house with the intention of shooting Dudley, and McKay if necessary. According to the admitted facts, he went to the back deck and fired six shots inside as the couple were watching television. McKay was hit three times, and Dudley twice. The couple was found by a neighbour on Sept. 22, 2008 at the home in the 31000 block of Greenwood Drive – located in a northern portion of Mission – four days after a 911 call was received that

six shots had been fired in the area. McKay was pronounced dead on the scene. Dudley was in severe medical distress and died en route to hospital. Mission RCMP Cpl. Mike White was given a written reprimand and docked one day’s pay in March after an RCMP disciplinary hearing determined that he failed to properly investigate the shots-fired call. He left the scene

after being there for 10 minutes and did not follow up the next day, the board of adjudication concluded. Following Woodruff being charged on May 13, 2011 with two counts of first-degree murder, Justin MacKinnon and Bruce Main were similarly charged on June 2 and Sept. 16, 2011, respectively. MacKinnon is still in custody since his arrest, while Main was released on bail with conditions.

Josh, and his parents Cheryle and Angelo, sat courtside for the Hoops for Hope game. Seated on a padded couch, Josh had a front row seat to the contest which attracted more than 600 fans. Josh has a soft-tissue cancer tumour hidden behind his cheekbone and is again undergoing chemotherapy for rhabdomyosarcoma, which was initially diagnosed in December 2009. It responded to treatment and was in remission until this past January. The family cannot find a doctor in B.C. willing to operate, but a surgeon at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston, MA, may perform an operation. The provincial medical plan will pay the medical fees for Josh, but not the family’s

Police officer dismissed Constable misled superiors about police vehicle crash An Abbotsford police officer has been dismissed from the force, following an investigation and disciplinary process relating to an accident in which he was involved last spring. It was alleged that Const. Nathan Brown, now a fiveyear member of the APD, misled superiors about a crash he had on the evening of April 14, 2011 with an unmarked police vehicle he was authorized to drive home from work. The officer had stopped on the way to his residence at a facility run by the police union for use by its members. While driving home, he collided with a pole and caused moderate damage to the police vehicle. Brown, 30, was suspended with pay during the investigation, which examined whether he had driven while impaired by alcohol and then lied to his supervisors to cover up the incident. Although a determination of whether he was impaired could not be made, Brown was found to have committed discreditable conduct for his actions that night and deceit

for statements about when the damage to his police vehicle occurred. “Brown was a good police officer who handled himself poorly after making a bad decision to drive a car after drinking,” said Chief Bob Rich. “But police officers are held to a high standard and this investigation determined he did not meet that standard.” The Abbotsford Police Professional Standards Section conducted the Police Act investigation under Rich’s direction. Chief Const. Dave Jones of the New Westminster Police was appointed as an independent discipline authority to hold the discipline proceeding once that investigation was complete. Brown can contest this finding by requesting a public hearing. If he chooses to do so, the police complaint commissioner will either order a public hearing or a hearing based on the record of the discipline proceeding. Brown still faces a criminal charge of obstructing a police officer in relation to the incident and next appears April 12 in Abbotsford provincial court.

I’ve met plenty of nice law abiding officer’s and plenty of corrupt officers. Hope he gets what he deserves, like every other person.

Police held to a high standard It’s the only job where one has to pass through a severe testing and interview process to prove their high degree of integrity to get hired. They are placed on a very high pedestal by everyone and expected, rightly so, to maintain that standard. But it’s a long way down when they fall off that pedestal. A lapse of judgement of that nature cannot be tolerated in that line of work, it’s too bad that that standard does not apply to other careers as well. Alistair Hart has covered his work truck with Kony 2012 posters, which is a viral YouTube video focusing on the African warlord Joseph Kony. as child soldiers and sex slaves. Although the viral campaign has drawn criticism, with some saying it is an inaccurate portrayal and will have no effect, Hart believes there is no harm in the awareness it has created. “Kids being victims is the biggest thing,” he said. “Imagine being a kid with a gun in your

hand with memories of what’s gone on in your life.” Hart said even though the campaign is focused on Kony, it might draw attention to others in the world who are equally as heinous and inspire people to become more involved. He plans to keep the posters on his truck until the end of the year.

On Friday, one of the video’s creators was detained by police and taken to a mental health facility after he was seen running around streets in San Diego in his underwear or naked, and displaying erratic behaviour. Stop Kony organizers said he was suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition.

An Abbotsford man is spreading the message about the “Stop Kony” campaign that has drawn 80 million views of a YouTube video about African warlord Joseph Kony. Alistair Hart, 27, has adorned his work truck with almost 50 “Kony 2012: One Thing We Can Agree On” posters. The vehicle also sports the message “Honk to Stop Kony.” Hart and his father, Raymond, own the Abbotsford-based AllSpa Repairs. His travels take him around the city, as well as to Chilliwack, Mission, Aldergrove and Langley. Hart said he was moved to do more than just share the video on Facebook or Twitter. He was impressed that Invisible Children – the California-based activist group that made and posted the 30-minute video – could draw so much attention to a cause and get people talking about a crucial issue. The video calls for the capture of Kony, who leads the Lord’s Resistance Army militia, for his alleged abduction of thousands of children to be used

Drivers still paying In a time when flawed rhetoric and relentless spin-doctoring makes it hard to know just how our interests are being served, it’s nice to hear one program, at least, is making an impact on those who seek to steal from us. Figures released this month by ICBC show that auto theft has fallen 71 per cent since the use of bait cars began. Thefts from vehicles are also down 64 per cent province-wide, ICBC said. It’s not just those pesky bait cars – now joined by bait commercial vehicles – that are making life difficult for criminals. Motorists are doing their part by locking vehicles, using anti-theft immobilizers, parking in secure, lit areas and removing valuables from cars. In further good news for the average, cash-strapped motorist, the corporation recently announced it is considering reducing or eliminating its incentive-pay program for executives if it fails to meet its annual profit targets. The program paid out $17 million in bonuses in 2010, but if declining figures for 2011 hold true, payouts for the corporation CEO,

executives and management will be scaled down. Indeed, if ICBC makes less than $35 million in net income in future years, the CEO and executives will lose their bonuses, and any question of performance pay will be off the table if the corporation posts a net loss. But that still leaves the question of the $497 million in proﬁts ICBC expects to turn over to the provincial government over the next three years, according to its most recent budget. As this is money considered surplus to ICBC’s needs, it is said to have no bearing on the need to raise basic rates, which is being blamed on rising claims costs. It might be hard for the average driver to disagree with critics who characterizes the government’s continuing dependence on such funds as a “stealth tax” on motorists. Perhaps bait cars – and locks and immobilizers on vehicles – are not enough to dispel every attack on our property, after all. – Black Press

Other Hand A week or so ago I thought, from all the banging, that there was something wrong with my furnace. Upon investigation however, I discovered the source was more localized … coming from the window that lights the staircase between levels of the house. There, from a perch on the deck railing, was a cock robin attacking his reflection in the glass. I’m not sure if he thinks he’s fighting an adversary or in love with his image, but either way he is persistent. Every morning as soon as dawn breaks he’s back at it, banging away for hours, and making a hell of a mess, with hundreds of filthy little footprints all over the glass. Fortunately, mating season will soon be over and he’ll go back to expending his energy hunting worms. However, while the robins may

believe it’s spring, and that season ofﬁcially begins today on the vernal equinox, Mother Nature seems to think otherwise. In all the years I have lived in Abbotsford I can’t remember as many snowy days as we have had this winter. Despite no great accumulations, it seems every morning the ground is covered with a layer of snow, from a trace to three inches or more. And when it’s too mild to stick, it continues to fall or is mixed with the rain. Fortunately, the calendar ticks off the days to warmer climes, something the ancients lacked on their kitchen walls. Due to that failure in achieving such a simplistic form of ‘technology,’ they resorted to projects like Stonehenge to determine the time of the equinox in spring and fall, and the summer and winter solstices. Instead of hanging a calender, complete with colourful pictures from the realtor who lives across the street, they built huge stone monuments. A printing error on paper is easy to resolve, moving stones weighing hundreds of tons is another matter. And that is one of the major myster-

ies of Stonehenge and other enormous ediﬁces. How were those ancient people, with no known form of technology, able to place the giant stones with such accuracy? At Stonehenge for example, the rising sun casts a beam of light onto a reﬂec-

I wonder how many times they moved those giant rocks before getting it right, and how many years it took to determine the right placement? I have been to Stonehenge in typical English weather, overcast with no sign of the sun: a rather difﬁcult task to determine where the beam of light

might shine when the sun isn’t visible. So how was the erection of Stonehenge so accurate and, beyond that, how was it built? Five thousand years ago there weren’t trucks to haul the massive stones for miles, no stone-cutting tools we have discovered to shape them, and no cranes to get them upright and the lintels on the standing stones. I’m not suggesting space aliens had anything to do with its construction, because recent studies of Stonehenge and other sites seem to have concluded that it was possible to build such structure with resources and techniques available at the time. So the major difference between the ‘tools’ we have now and what we can accomplish, and what they had then, is that it took them hundreds, if not thousands, of years to build such sites. Now that, like the robin beating against my window, takes perseverance and purpose of mind that spanned not just years and generations, but entire evolving societies. letters It’s about choice Re: D. Wall letter, “Come so far, and going backward” in regard to lingerie football. Plain and simple, it’s about the freedom of choice. When is Abbotsford going to stop bashing society over the head with its self righteous, holierthan-thou attitude and join the 21st century? All you have been successful in is giving these people free publicity. But stop and think about all the other moral issues that really do need addressing, such as the rise in crime in Abbotsford, shootings, drugs, grow ops – and now being proud to boast that three Abby men make the top-10 car thieves list. Women have choices. And frankly, if shaking their booty on a football pitch is what they want to do to “earn” a living, surely it’s their choice, not yours. What you all keep missing, with things like the Taboo show and the girly football is that you don’t have to buy a ticket and attend. It is not like this is being paraded up and down the streets of Abbotsford. They are not being “press-ganged” into it. If everyone thinks the way you do, they will not attend, therefore there will be no girly football. On the other hand, perhaps people will enjoy it. My hat goes off to these ladies for being so brave, diving at one another with very little protection on their bodies. Maybe we should vote to have scantily clad male footballers. I am writing in responce to articles that ran March 8 and 15 regarding Laurel Wilson and Ralph Jewell. As a member of this community, I am so glad to see the family taking action against those involved in the accident, particularly (driver) Shaun Cochrane. There is a family grieving as a result as his careless actions. Both the Wilson and Jewell families have been let down by our justice system once. I hope for them there won’t be a second let-down. Challenger does not have a criminal record in B.C., according to the provincial court database. Mears was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in White Rock in 2000. Surrey resident Korey Tyler Kelly, 25, was believed to have been among a group attempting to rob the grow-op at the home on Friday night. He was shot multiple times, and his associates managed to get him into the back seat of a car and drive away, calling 911 in the process, said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Police officers en route to the 911 call were flagged down by Kelly’s associates. He was taken by ambulance

An Abbotsford man is one of two people who have been charged in connection with an Aldergrove marijuana grow-op tied to a fatal shooting on Friday night. Craig Bruce Challenger, 27, of Abbotsford and Taylor Raymond Mears, 32, of Surrey have each been charged with production of a controlled substance at a home in the 900 block of 272 Street. Spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks said the Langley RCMP’s drug section seized almost 600 pot plants from the home. Mears and Challenger have been released and are expected again in Surrey provincial court on March 26.

No arrests have been made for Langley’s first homicide of the year. Kelly had a history of ripping off grow-ops, including an attempted murder charge involving a violent home invasion and grow rip in Surrey in 2004. He was sentenced to a lesser charge of breaking and entering, and received a year in prison. He had been actively committing crime for a decade, facing numerous charges for illegal possession of firearms, possession and production of drugs, and breaching his conditions.

The average temperature for this month is typically a high of 11.4 C and a low of 2.3 C, but so far Abbotsford has been seeing an average high of only 7.9 C, and a

chilly 1.8 C for the low. There is a trough of cold air above us that has brought six snow days for the month, most with just trace amounts of snowfall and most of it falling on March 16, and a total of 6.7 cm for the month. The normal amount for Abbotsford is 3.7 cm of snowfall for March. There is another snow day in the forecast Tuesday.

Funds for vulnerable students The Abbotsford school district will receive almost $429,000 in funding from the provincial government to help provide programs for vulnerable students. These funds add to the $1.19 million already in place for at-risk students in Abbotsford through the CommunityLINK program. This means a total of $1.62 million in funding – a 36 per cent increase – has been provided in Abbotsford for the 2012-13 school year. CommunityLINK (Learning Includes Nutrition and Knowledge) helps vulnerable students who are at risk in terms of academic achievement and social development. The funding helps districts provide meal and snack programs, literacy and healthy schools initiatives, inner city and community school programs, school-based support workers and counselling.

It’s West Coast versus East Coast as a family from Abbotsford faces off against a Prince Edward Island household in a televised cooking competition airing March 29 on the Food Network. Randall Peters – along with wife Heather, 16-year-old daughter Milan and 12-year-old Josie – are representing B.C. in the new TV show Family Cook Off. Instead of professional chefs, each episode follows two average families cooking in timed head-to-head matches where judges award points to determine the winners. “The idea was that you had to use recipes that you used before that weren’t just from a cookbook,” Randall said. The Peters found out about the competition from a friend after another family backed out at the last minute. They had just 10 days to prepare for the culinary challenge before filming their episode on Vancouver’s seawall late last summer. “The kids were a little bit freaking out that I said yes to it without really asking them, but they loved it. It was a really fun experience,” Randall said, adding there were some frantic moments in the days leading up to the show as the family tested recipes to make sure they’d work in the allotted 20 minutes. Despite such a short amount of time to perfect their culinary chops, Randall said he was certain his daughters could handle the pressure of the competition due to their experiences cooking at home. With a family of six that includes two fulltime working parents, the Peters decided a few years ago that a different child needed to prepare dinner every other day. “Kids are actually way better than you think when you give them responsibility. They’re making really cool dinners,” he said. That doesn’t mean

Close to $200,000 in gaming grants Six local groups receive latest batch of funding Six Abbotsford community groups are benefiting from a total of almost $200,000 in the latest round of gaming grants released by the provincial government. The largest grant, $85,000, is going to the Hand in Hand Child Care Society, followed by Abbotsford Hospice Society ($49,000), the Psalm 23 Transition Society ($35,000), West Abbotsford Community School Society ($30,000), John Maclure Community School PAC ($530), and Prince Charles Elementary PAC ($420). In response to the Community Gaming Grant Review conducted last July, the provincial government reinstated funding to adult arts, culture, and sport organizations, environmental groups, and animal welfare agencies. It also increased financial support for organizations that have faced funding reductions in the past three years. This amounts to $15 million more in gaming grants than originally budgeted for 2011/12, according to MLA John van Dongen (Abbotsford South). More than 6,000 community groups across B.C. have received these funds so far. The latest batch of grants amounts to more than $8 million among 248 recipients.

Auditions for Dragon’s Den The hit CBC TV show Dragons’ Den returns to Abbotsford for another round of open auditions on Monday, March 26. The city is one of more than 40 stops across Canada, as producers search for budding entrepreneurs to appear on season six of the program. The Abbotsford auditions take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Regency Inn and Conference Centre at 32110 Marshall Rd. This is the third consecutive year that the auditions have been held in the community.

Mobile home park a city asset: developer Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

The Garden Village retirement mobile home park is nearing the end of its life in its present use, but the property could be a great asset to the city, says owner and high-profile local developer Karen Matty. In the March 8 edition of The News residents of Garden Village related how they will have to eventually move from their homes to make way for a new development. Matty is the owner of the 13-acre site on McCallum Road, near the Trans-Canada Highway. Reached on vacation in Mexico, Matty said there are no firm plans to re-develop the mobile home park lands, but added commercial retail would be a successful use of the property. She said the mobile home park is aged and the infrastructure would need to be rebuilt for the site to continue in its present use. A water main must be replaced but there are 23 trailers situated on top of it – under planning allowed 55 years ago – so the city will not do the work, she said. Matty said if her company undertook necessary upgrades, it would have to raise pad rental rates to pay for the work, but in any case, the infrastructure and the trailers themselves are too old to make upgrading viable.

The landlord has been telling tenants for more than two years that they must plan to leave. They will ultimately be served notice, and at that time will be able to choose either two years of free pad rent, or cash in lieu – approximately $10,000 to $12,000 for most of the tenants. Already, about one-third of the residents have left, said Matty, and nobody is being evicted. One residents expressed concerns she was granted federal funds to upgrade her trailer, and it would have to be repaid if she leaves within five years. Matty said she knows of two such situations in the park, and has offered to repay the grants for the owners. Matty said the trailer court was originally built in a rural situation, but the city has grown up around it. A trailer court is no longer what a municipal planner would consider a good use of the site. As a commercial development it would become a valuable property, and give a muchneeded boost to the city’s tax base, she said. It would also create more jobs. Abbotsford city councillor John Smith said he and Matty work together on the city’s affordable housing committee, and Matty donated $500,000 in seed money to start an affordable housing fund for the committee to administer. Three days into the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, Alberta is expanding its reputation as a powerhouse province. Through seven draws at Abbotsford Recreation Centre, the only two undefeated teams in the field hailed from the province directly to the east – Rob Armitage on the men’s side, and Cathy King on the women’s. Their early success is in keeping with what has been a season of Alberta dominance at the national championships – Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts,

while Brendan Bottcher and Jocelyn Peterman won the Canadian men’s and women’s junior titles, respectively. While the Alberta rinks’ early exploits at the Canadian Seniors are impressive, there’s still a lot of curling yet to come. “It’s a long week,” Armitage pointed out with a smile, after beating Glenn Goss’s Newfoundland and Labrador foursome 9-4 on Sunday evening in a battle of previously undefeated teams. “There are so many teams here that are so good. Margaret (Bobbie) Lee Dec. 17, 1923 ~ March 15, 2012

Bobbie passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ surrounded by her children. Pre-deceased by husband Bill in 2009, she was wife, mother, grandmother, friend and ‘Mom’ to many, many others. Her love, presence, and focus on family will be missed by Lonnie (David), Bill (Lori), Dan (Heidi), and Ron (Judy). ‘Grandma’ will be missed by her 11 grandchildren (especially her favourites: Danika, Jonathan, Erin, Geoffrey, Daniel, Michael, Spencer, Mark, Ryan, Krista, and Jason). A special thanks to the wonderful staffs of Hallmark Assisted Living and Valhaven. In lieu of ﬂowers, donations can be made to Canadian Diabetes or the Parkinson Society of Canada. Bobbie was born at Britannia Mines where she lived for a short time before the family moved to Vancouver. In 1934, she moved to the Cariboo wilderness with her parents and three sisters, attending a one room school house in Narcosli Creek, near Quesnel. In 1936, the family settled back in Vancouver where Bobbie met her lifelong friend, Charlotte, and her future husband, Bill, at Britannia High School. Bobbie and Bill married in 1946, settling in North Burnaby to raise their family of four children. In 1988, she and Bill moved out to Abbotsford in the Fraser Valley. Bobbie worked for B.C. Telephone as an operator, raised four children, and became ‘Mom’ to countless others both in the neighbourhood and in her role as a Teaching Assistant and Noon Hour Supervisor at Lochdale Community School in North Burnaby. A talented seamstress, she also created countless dancing outﬁts for daughter Lonnie and many others. Her culinary talents were also famous in the neighbourhood as the Village household became a regular stop for friends and family ‘just in case’ there were fresh cookies or cakes available. ‘Family First’ was Bobbie’s unspoken tenet, one that she demonstrated daily with her own family, her parents and siblings, and countless others that came into her life. Her accommodating attitude, kind nature, and boundless positive energy in all she did made being in her presence a wonderful experience. Despite her many ailments that impacted her over the last few years, she maintained her great sense of humour, dignity, and natural warmth that reached out to all. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvin Presbyterian Church. 2597 Bourquin Crescent East, Abbotsford, BC.
