Tax hike 1.66% this year Tiered water system eliminated, uniform rate set

Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

The average Abbotsford taxpayer will be charged an extra $31 on their municipal tax notice, with the city’s approval of a 1.66 per cent tax increase for 2012. On Monday, council ended two months of debate by agreeing to the increase, which will see the police department receive 1.1 per

cent, city operations get 0.93 per cent and city capital reduced by 0.37 per cent. A one per cent increase is equivalent to $1,094,000 of city revenue. Council also rejected all staff recommendations for new water rates, and instead approved a single uniform rate of $1.15 per cubic metre (1,000 litres), proposed by Coun. John Smith. This new rate eliminates the

controversial tiered water rates. The new rate will go into effect on May 1, 2012. “I was never in favour of it (tiered rates),” said Mayor Bruce Banman. “It created confusion, anger and division in our community.” Under the current system about to change, the base water rate is $1.13 per cubic metre. Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance attracted a near sell-out crowd of about 3,500 to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Saturday night. The Celtic show is a classic tale of good versus evil, based on Irish folklore and told through music and dance. A smaller crowd turned up for the additional matinee performance earlier that afternoon.

Teachers from Abbotsford Middle School stand across from their school, at the corner of Bevan and Ware roads, to join their colleagues across the province on day one of the three-day strike. At the far right is Rick Guenther, who will vie for the presidency of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation this month.

Day one of teachers’ strike

Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

For Tara Landry, a Grade 8 teacher at Abbotsford Middle School, it’s not about wages. She said she was standing in the rain with her colleagues in Abbotsford and across the province on day one of the three-day teachers’ strike because of the kids. “We’re in the classrooms. We see first-hand what cuts to education do,” Landry said Monday morning. She said manageable class sizes and extra support for students who need it are more important to her than a wage increase. School district spokesperson Dave Stephen said initial reports indicated that parents on Monday were abiding by the advisory, with only a few schools having a student or two show up. Bud Loewen, president of the District Parents’ Advisory Council, said parents appear to more strongly support the teachers, but they are growing weary of how long a settlement is taking. “Parents are getting tired of the adjustments in their timetables that they make to deal with the job action,” he said. Students at several Abbotsford schools showed their support for teachers by holding a walkout on Friday afternoon. The protestors marched, chanted and waved signs at passing vehicles.

However, in the peak-use months, May to October, only the first 60 cubic metres used in a billing cycle (every two months) is charged at $1.13 per cubic metre. The cost rises to $1.43 for 60 to 91 cubic metres, and again to $2.26 over 91. There were complaints that such tiered rates penalize homeowners with large families and secondary suites. Now those households will pay more as they use more water, but at the same rates as everyone else. The tax increase will go towards contractual police

department increases in wages and other costs, but also allows the hiring of one new officer and one civilian position ($111,000), a new bylaw enforcement officer ($61,000), a 5,000-hour expansion to transit service ($55,000), an increase in funding for the MSA Museum Society and Abbotsford Restorative Justice ($45,000) and other services. Several cuts were also required. In addition to the 0.37 per cent reduction in capital, the city eliminated an annual one per cent increase to the capital fund. Other savings were found by reducing the litter pick-up

contract, department restructuring and the deferral of many smaller capital projects. Coun. Patricia Ross feared council had reduced capital expenses too much, deferring too many projects. “I get the intent is to ease the burden of taxpayers, but in the long term it is not going to do that,” she said. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service also had its request for five new firefighters denied. Council will examine the request again next year. The 1.66 per cent increase equates to approximately $8 for

every $100,000 of assessed value on residential property. Business and commercial taxes will rise $21 per $100,000 of assessed value. Coun. John Smith said he hopes more savings can be found for next year. “It’s still going to be the lowest tax increase in the Fraser Valley,” he said. According to figures released by the city, the average Abbotsford home will pay $3,838 in taxes and fees in 2012. A typical single family residence will pay a total of $833 in fees ($367 for water, $246 for sewer and $220 for solid waste) in 2012.

An Abbotsford pastor has been charged with sexual offences against a 15-year-old boy. Patrick Marini, 69, is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference of a person under 16. Const. Ian MacDonald said the matter was brought to the attention of the Abbotsford Police on Feb. 16. On that day, a teenage boy told his mother about an incident that had allegedly occurred on Feb. 11 with Marini, MacDonald said. Police investigated and the charges that were initially laid were sexual exploitation and sexual interferenc. An online profile describes Marini as a missionary/ pastor who has ministered in Canada, the U.S., India, Africa and Europe. He previously lived in Ontario and Saskatchewan, according to the website. “My unique status in bachelorhood enables me to respond to the call of God in any circumstance. I lived in a mud hut for six months during my last stay in India,” the profile states. Marini is listed online as a director of Resurrection Life Ministries (RLM) in Abbotsford. A person answering the phone for the ministry said Marini has not been involved on the RLM board for over a year, but did show up at a service about three weeks ago. Marini is also listed online as president of Praise Ministries of Canada in Surrey, but nobody with that ministry could be reached on Monday by press deadline. MacDonald said Marini does not have a prior criminal record. There are concerns there could be other victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.

Abbotsford Police are asking for witnesses to a violent assault outside of a local pub to come forward. The incident took place at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday outside of the Duke of Dublin Olde Irish Pub in the 33700 block of South Fraser Way. MacDonald said a 31-year-old man who was leaving with friends stopped to talk to an acquaintance. The nature of the discussion is not known, but a second man elbowed the victim in the face, strongly enough to break his jaw. That man, or a second individual, then hit the victim over the head with a glass bottle. The victim, who was bleeding profusely from his face and head, was transported to hospital. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Union needs to suck it up

I’m supporting our teachers they are there for the children when no one else is when it comes to the Education the reason there is a future for them they encourage the children to follow their dreams and help them no matter what... You go teachers glad to see your standing up for the future leaders and whatever else the children maybe dreaming... — Michelle Bird

Although I agree teachers are underappreciated I think this fight needs to end. Basically, the teachers union needs to realize that taxpayers can’t afford it! Its not that we don’t want to. Anyways, I almost feel like the union needs to suck it up and move on (and I mean this in the nicest way possible.) We can’t all just whine and complain to get what we want and then strike just because we’re told “no.” — Mai Souvannahong

Two sides to every story I support the teachers yet realize the decisions to be made on both sides are quite complex - how many of us really understand the position of both sides - how many have read and understand Bill 22? — Lisa Geddert

C’mon ... What other job gets a 15% wage increase over so many years? Cmon ... I support other demands but not this. - Judy Wallbaum

Hold union accountable Why are no one holding the teachers accountable. Their union told media they would not be picketing this week, but just handing out pamphlets.. Unless pamphlets are big posters stapled to long sticks waved in my face as I drive by, I think they don’t seem to be accountable to their own word????? — Tammi Lang

Where are our priorities? I think that teachers are terribly underpaid. Most people don’t realize how much work they do outside of school hours, how many work late into the night planning things to do with the children or grading papers. Where are our priorities? — Carrie Gambill

abbynews.com

Fight has gone on too long I think the it’s about different things for different people. For the majority of the teachers it IS about the kids, for the union reps it is about politics. Most teachers care MORE about the kids than the money! And really, this doesn’t affect the kids any more than their parents taking them out of school for a family vacation! I don’t see the teachers, or anyone else, striking just because they were told no. This fight has gone on for too long. — Shawna Harrison Van Nuys

110% support I support them 110% — Allison McCaveney

Who will feel the effects? I do feel for the teachers, but it’s not a fantastic situation for the students either. Because, at the end of it all - students will be the one’s feeling the effects. — Thomas Canuck

Worth it We are trusting teachers with our most valuable! They are worth it! If you don’t trust them or think they aren’t doing a great job maybe you should consider home schooling. — Tonya Neufeld Padilla For breaking news and top stories.

Police seek more leads Wesley Foulds disappeared three years ago It has been three years since Wesley Craig Foulds of Abbotsford went missing, and police are once again appealing for public assistance in trying to solve the case. Megan Marshall, Krista Munro, Erin Findlay and Hailey Froehler pose on a mechanical bull at Yale on Friday.

Yale teens Dare to Care Yale secondary students pulled an all-nighter on Friday, and their Dare to Care fundraiser garnered more than double its goal. The fundraiser saw eight theme rooms at the school: A mechanical bull, laser tag, a Survivor room, Hogwarts and others, all designed and run by Ms. Rajabally’s senior leadership class. The party went from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday. To participate, students had to raise a minimum of $50 through their own initiatives for the cause. Some 300 students got involved, and some raised more than the minimum $50. “I was really happy, said teacher Doug Primrose, who oversaw Dare to Care. “Some of the kids raised more than $200.

The result is approximately $19,100 for the agency Free the Children, which will put the money toward clean water and sanitation projects for a village in Kenya. The goal was to raise $8,500, which is enough to cover one project, said Primrose. With the additional funding, more than double the objective, the same village will see at least two initiatives. “The kids really bought into the fun of it, said Rajabally. So, too, did the mayor. Bruce Banman showed up, sang some karaoke, and rode the mechanical bull. The event was a first at Yale, but likely the first of many. Primrose said he will definitely plan another for next year.

A lesson for all from tragedy If ever in doubt that drinking and driving can change lives forever, sit in on a court case dealing with a choice that led to one person being responsible for the death of another – the death of a friend. It happens in every community. Death is never the anticipated ending of whatever night on the town or social event preceded the tragedy. But it is always a risk when the choice is made to drink and drive. Three years ago, Sean Fleming made the choice to drive after drinking, took that risk – and he’ll pay dearly for it for the rest of his life. In court last week, Fleming was sentenced to 18 months in jail for impaired driving causing death in connection with the Feb. 14, 2009 crash that killed his friend, Tony Blackburn. Fleming’s pain over causing his friend’s death was profound. He was shaking, wiping tears from his cheeks and couldn’t face the parents and siblings of his friend. Those in attendance heard about the deep depression Fleming fell into and has remained in since the tragedy, burdened

inconsolably with the reality of what he had done. But Fleming wasn’t the only one in pain Tuesday. It was an almost tangible presence that hung over the proceedings, as Fleming’s parents received confirmation their son was going to jail, and as Blackburn’s family and a close friend shared the impact the loss of their son and brother’s life has had. After sentencing, Fleming delivered an emotional and unexpected apology to the Blackburns, one that clearly brought both sides some relief. Unfortunately, it won’t bring Tony Blackburn back, and it won’t change for Fleming the fact that he killed somebody, unintentional though it was. As Judge Robin Baird told Fleming, it is a very heavy burden to bear, and perhaps the worst punishment of all. We can only hope that others will learn from the needless tragedy, from the torment endured. Otherwise, Blackburn’s death and all the pain that continues to follow it, will be for nothing. – Black Press

A scented idea that won’t likely sell Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand Every now and then, the scent of fresh fir boughs wafts by my nose as I sit at the computer, conjuring thoughts of warm spring days in the woods. Where the scent comes from I know not, though I suspect that somewhere in the house remains a candle or container used over Christmas to make everything smell more ‘Christmasy,’ including the artificial tree opted for last year. While it will take a couple of years of not buying live trees to amortize the cost of the fake one, it is at least easy to display each December with the mere opening of a cardboard box. And, while it has no odour (thus the scented candle or whatever) it does come equipped with lights so all that’s required in this age of instant gratification are a couple of baubles with a present or two beneath it to herald the season.

Another benefit, of course, is that with an artificial fir I won’t be contravening the city’s tree cutting bylaw by reducing its precious and apparently sparse tree canopy. Yet, while our plastic fir reposes in its cardboard container, the memory of Christmas and walks in the woods remain with the scent dispenser. Such is the importance of olfactory sense in recalling memories, so I guess it’s not surprising that it is also a strong marketing tool. Glade, Febreze and others wouldn’t be making millions without it. However, I have to wonder about the genius of a Canadian manufacturer who recently debuted “Scratch and Sniff ” jeans for men. The stated reason for imbedding a scent into the apparel is to mask the fact that “to get the look” of well-worn jeans, men don’t wash them frequently. So aside from becoming dirty, I assume they also develop a definite ‘pong’ that the raspberry odour attempts to hide. It’s the ‘scratch and sniff ’ aspect that gets me, however. Can you imagine a guy walking up to someone and saying “wanna sniff my jeans?”

As one who occasionally forgets a pair of jeans in the washer overnight, then dries them the next day, I know what sniffing jeans means. There’s something about having left them wet too long, then later worn. As your body heat warms the pants, you begin to notice an odour akin

I have to wonder about the genius of a manufacturer who recently debuted ‘Scratch and Sniff’ jeans for men. to something you stepped in at the dog park. Other than a pair or two of beater jeans worn when “dirty work” is called for, now all my jeans hit the washer and, immediately following, the dryer, after only a wearing or two. Not only does that keep them fresh, and odourless, it also contributes to their ‘well-worn look’ which, I now discover, is much sought after. Me, a fashion state-

ment?!? However, odour and dirt masking won’t, in my opinion, create a marketing bonanza for the jeans maker either. I can’t see guys wearing anything that would exude the essence of strawberry shortcake or raspberry compote. Then again, perhaps these fragrant jeans will be a success, and take off (literally and figuratively) with those whose appetites are stimulated by scent. After all, who would have thought a plastic hoop could turn someone into a millionaire – or a bobby pin, or the many other amazing successes of things most thought would fail. Should the scented jeans become a success, will the makers turn their thoughts to other men’s apparel? How about a hunting jacket, camo of course, that smells like a libidinous lady moose? Or something truly west coast like a raincoat that gives off the odour of dampness and decaying vegetation? Then again, scented clothing isn’t anything new. All it takes is a little of your preferred beverage spilled on your jeans to make you smell like a brewery all day.

letters

Student voices This is an open letter to Minister George Abbott, Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. government. As a current high school student and youth in B.C., I find that my voice is often invalidated or disregarded by others older then myself. As a student in a public school, I find that our – the students of B.C. – voices are not being heard by the B.C. government. On Friday, March 2, students all across B.C. marched out of their classrooms in support of their teachers. Students walked out to send a message to the government that we have a voice, and we will use it. We need more support for special needs students, we need less populated classrooms, we need more updated materials (I have a textbook where

the Berlin Wall is still standing). We need an environment where we can learn! Currently, many students feel that our needs, and the needs of our teachers, are not being met. Many adults in society seem to think that all the teachers want is a 15 per cent wage increase, but that is untrue. This is a negotiable figure. What we want is a fair mediation so that the other issues that have been brought up can be resolved. To the B.C. government, to Minister Abbott, and to Premier Christy Clark, this is a plea on behalf of the students of B.C. to have a fair negotiation through the use of mediation with the BCTF. Anthony Hope

Future shift Abbotsford, “the city of a hundred churches is outgrowing its old agri-Christian Bible belt view of the world – and there’s nothing wrong with that. It doesn’t mean the end of the world is coming. It doesn’t mean we are living in the modern times of Sodom and Gomorrah. A growing city has to represent more than one view of the world – in fact, many. The “power shift occurring in Abbotsford will continue to affect the entrenched fundamental view of what is right politically, economically, and socially. We are in the midst of shifting from a smokestack and muscle view of the world to something that is more global in its ideas – more of an embracing rather than of denying the realities of change. What Abbotsford is experiencing is a future shift into the 21st century. Myron Neville

About greed I couldn’t agree more with the editorial in the Feb. 28 issue, “It’s not about the kids. Having worked in and out of unions, I’ve always considered them a necessary evil. However, the BCTF’s ridiculous posturing, demands and claiming “it’s about the kids, is eroding my statement above. This is nothing more than greed. Teachers are a privileged group, with benefits most of us could only dream of. Any teachers who find this job too onerous should find other employment, as there is a long line of unemployed teachers waiting for an opportunity. T.B. Mortimer

Master Your Money

The New Wealth Secret A true story of an unlikely underdog who mastered the money game Have you ever felt an uncomfortable silence when someone starts getting too personal about money? Why is that? I find it odd that people share their most intimate details with friends and strangers on Facebook, yet completely clam up when the subject of money comes up. Like it or not, money is what makes our society click. Canadians enjoy one of the highest qualities of life in the world, and money is a big part of the reason why.

about money. But Rob did approach him - and Frank told him Money is ALL about leverage. Frank then went on and shared with Rob one of the greatest lessons he had ever learned. When your money makes more money for you than your job does... then you are well on your way to financial freedom. If you make $20 an hour at your job - true financial independence begins when the money you invest is making

My name is Darren Weeks and I am one of the fortunate few who LOVES to talk about money. More specifically, I love to talk about the fundamentals that help people create and protect their wealth. Real independence comes when you learn how to make money work for you. Money knowledge needs to be at your side in all situations... like a trusted friend who does nice things for you on a regular basis.

When you understand the rules of the game...the money will find you! My company, the Fast Track Group, has been ranked among Canada’s Fastest Growing Companies for two straight years now. Last year, we finished 40th on PROFIT Magazine’s list. In 10 years, I have taken it from 5 employees in one tiny office, to over 100 employees and 14 offices. More than 350,000 Canadians have now attended Fast Track events. All our success has enabled us to support people that inspire us. The Fast Track Group is the title sponsor of Canada’s Luge team and we support them to the tune of over $1 million per year. On top of providing FREE financial education to all Canadians, my company is able to offer better returns and tax savings to our investors thanks to our partnerships with multinational Companies. We are not some “fly-by-night corporation.” My greatest pride in all of this? Seeing my clients, students and peers succeeding and thriving in the current economy. Rob Chaulk came to one of my events in the Spring of 2008. He grew up in a family with a poor dad, and a rich dad (his uncle). So Rob had been given a good start on his money education. But it wasn’t enough. Rob was a hard worker that knew his job wasn’t going to make life any easier. He held careers in the energy and industrial sector. He dabbled in some businesses along the way in the restaurant and towing business. When Rob read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, he took it seriously and within 30 days he bought his first rental property. He was hooked. He put together a plan for 10 properties in 10 years... his key to retirement. Right around this same time he had lunch with his rich dad (his multi-millionaire uncle). Not exactly an easy guy to talk to, his uncle “Frank” was self-made and not easy to approach

Which of these would you like to put a permanent end to? • Constantly checking your bank balance to make sure there is enough left over to cover the monthly bills. • Worrying about how you will EVER get out of the rut and finally be able to start relaxing about money. • Arguing with your spouse about money and the challenges that come with a lack of it. • Dreaming about that vacation you have always wanted and needed, yet knowing it will never happen at the rate you are going now. • The fear that your children will be just as bad with their money as you have been. • Fretting over those unexpected expenses that come in – knowing full well you have to do a lot of shuffling to scrape together enough to cover them off. • The jealousy you feel when someone you know ends up doing well financially, knowing FULL WELL you are smarter than they are.

Give us 3 hours of your time and we’ll give you powerful strategies that are guaranteed to change your life.

Rob Chaulk

you $25 an hour, without you having to do anything more. Frank showed him how to turn his rental property into 10 properties in just 12 months. Rob Met Darren Rob then came to a Get Rich in Canada event, hosted by myself... and was able to create a $4 million dollar property portfolio in just 24 months. As Rob says “Money is just the scorecard. When you understand the rules of the game - and how the game works - the money will find you! Now it’s my turn to pass on my knowledge and experience.” While he was building his portfolio of properties, Rob also took his health very seriously. Rob was overweight, had sleep apnea and was sluggish every waking hour. After dropping over 100 pounds Rob found a new lifestyle that had been long lost, and a money mindset that continues to help him and his family with all of the retirement and dreams. Is it your turn to master the money mindset? I am proud to share that my system has worked for everyone who aggressively applied it. You could be the one with a large real estate portfolio and a business or two that runs without you. ...Many people are broke, and will stay that way for the rest of their life. My company has organized an event coming up in your city and I would like you to join us. There is no cost to attend. My team is here to make sure you get the tools you need for creating the independence you crave.

Find out how to get out of bad debt and into wise investments. Discover how anyone, no matter how dire their circumstances, can go from rags to riches in 5 years or less. My students and business partners are prime examples of how you can start with nothing and build a very healthy investment portfolio and business in 5 years or less. The best part? We don’t just show you what to do... you get the formula to go as fast as you like, and can handle. Most seminars share the what – not the how. We show you both with specific examples, formulas and resources to get you there on your own pace. Don’t go it alone! Bring a friend or family member with you and enjoy the journey to

wealth as a team. When you reserve your seat at this event, just mention who you want to bring and we will also give you a CD that sells for $39.95. Nothing good is ever FREE... right? Wrong. I know you may be sceptical because we aren’t charging you for this event. Think about this. Rob started off at a free event just like this. He heard about an event just like this put on by my company. He attended and absorbed every ounce of information shared, and took MASSIVE ACTION. He is now financially independent and able to live life on his own terms. What should you do next? Pick up your phone and dial 1-877-742-4236 or visit our website at www.AbbotsfordGetRich.com and reserve your seat there. Find one or more friends or family members who want out of the rat race like you do... and get them a seat booked as well. Last? Don’t let anyone discourage you or get in your way. Real independence starts when you learn to ignore all the negative people in your life who don’t want you to succeed. Make sure you show up, take lots of notes, and immediately start putting these ideas into action. If a completely unknown individual can be in the same situation you are and become financially independent in 5 years or less... why can’t you? This is the real deal and I have gone from $0 to $100 million in revenues in just 10 years using these strategies... my students are proof that my techniques work everywhere, for anyone who is willing to take action. Stop what you are doing right now and get your seat booked. Dial 1-877-742-4236 or visit our website at www.AbbotsfordGetRich.com and reserve your seat there. PS: The definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!” Your success demands an investment of your time and money... and we are handing you a grand opportunity to improve your odds of success many times over. Join us for an incredible journey – with a proven way to make 2012 the year you’ve always wanted. *Darren Weeks is not always the presenter at Fast Track events

The Prom, a themed event to raise money for music education, raised more than $9,000 on Saturday at the Sandman Inn. The Devon Clifford Memorial Foundation has been established in memory of the former drummer for You Say Party, who died of a brain hemorrhage two years ago. The objective is to provide music lessons for young people who may not be able to afford them. Money raised at The Prom will go to the new charity. Two more rock camps – 10-week programs for aspiring musicians – will be held this year. “It was a wonderful feeling in the room,” said Devon’s mother Edna Clifford. “We were all there for a good cause, and to remember Devon,” “It was really great – a lot of fun,” she added, and indicated it will become an annual event.

Eating healthy too costly: Report Jeff NAGEL Black Press

A family on welfare would have to spend as much as 47 per cent of their household income to put healthy food on the table, according to a new report on the cost of nutritious food. The B.C. chapter of the Dieticians of Canada pegs the cost of providing a family of four with a nationally defined basket of nutritious food – basic staples and produce but no pre-packaged meals – at an average of $868 per month in B.C. That monthly cost rises to $944 in the Vancouver Coastal health region, while it’s slightly lower at $851 in the Fraser Health region, according to the report Cost of Eating in British Columbia 2011. It would eat up 15 per cent of the $67,200 median income for a typical B.C. family of four and a much higher proportion for those in or near poverty. Single people on income assistance and even a family of four on a lower earned income would pay at least a third of their income, the report

found. That doesn’t leave enough to pay the typical cost of housing, it found, estimating many welfare families would face a $100 to $300 gap each month if they tried to buy what’s nutritious. “People end up using food banks and a lot of free food services,” said Kristen Yarker, executive director of the B.C. dieticians group. “They end up spending a lot of their time accessing those and lining up, which isn’t a great solution.” Others go without, she said, or opt for cheaper, less healthy food options. The report found the nutritious food basket price hasn’t changed since 2009, but is up nearly 40 per cent since 2001, when it stood at $626. Meanwhile, Yarker noted, housing, gasoline, utilities and other competing costs have steadily climbed, leaving less in household budgets to devote to good food. Poor nutrition can spell trouble for children in school, harm pregnancies for expectant mothers and hurt productivity of adult workers.

UFV to make nationals debut Cascades lose by one in Canada West final, but silver is enough for trip to Halifax

Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

At this point, we might as well start referring to the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team as the Cardiac Kids. The Cascades’ last three games have been decided by a grand total of three points. On Feb. 25, Joel Friesen’s buzzer-beating threepointer lifted UFV to a 69-68 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Game 3 of their best-of-three quarter-final playoff series. Then on Friday at the Canada West Final Four in Saskatoon, the Cascades nearly let a 21-point fourthquarter lead slip away against the Victoria Vikes, but hung on for a 63-62 semifinal victory. On Saturday in the Canada West final, the UFV men finally came out on the wrong end of a one-point game – Jordan Blackman missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Alberta

Golden Bears won 72-71. While the Cascades fell painfully short of a conference title, they secured a more significant landmark. For the first time in their six-year CIS tenure, they’re off to the national championship tournament, by virtue of their runner-up finish in Canada West. That event tips off Friday in Halifax, and the fifth-seeded Cascades open against the No. 4 Lakehead Thunderwolves of Thunder Bay, Ont. “There’s some very strong teams in Canada West, and you saw that in the playoffs,” UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock said, reflecting on his team’s razor-thin margin for error over the past two weeks. “Luckily we had the composure and playmaking to win the first two key games. And if we had to lose any one of them, it would be Continued on A22

The W.J. Mouat Hawks and Yale Lions have weathered plenty of adversity this season, but they've endured. Their reward? A trip to the B.C. AAA high school boys basketball championships. The Hawks beat the North Delta Huskies 79-52 in Fraser Valley Tournament action at the Langley Events Centre on Friday, locking up one of the Valley's seven berths to B.C.’s in the process. They went on to finish fifth at the regional tourney after topping White Rock Christian Academy 83-74 on Saturday. "The guys were totally tickled pink," reported Hawks co-coach Pat Lee, whose team began the season ranked No. 3 among AAA teams but fell out of the rankings after navigating a litany of injuries. The Lions' drive to the B.C.'s came down to a do-or-die game on Saturday vs. North Delta in the Valley's seventh-eighth placing game. They fused a hot shooting performance from J.J. Pankratz (24 points, six three-pointers) with gritty team defence, and won 60-53. "I'm very happy for these boys," said Friesen, whose team won the B.C. title in 2008 and 2010 and returns to provincials after a one-year absence. "It's a group that has tried to find an identity. They always felt they should be like the Yale teams that have been before." In senior girls basketball action, Yale begins its run at AAA provincials on Wednesday, when they meet New Westminster at 5:15 p.m. at Capilano University in North Vancouver. It's the first time in more than two decades that a Lions senior girls team has qualified for the AAA B.C.'s. "They're very excited," coach Euan Roberts said. "They're soaking it all in."

In the wake of his team’s uninspired performance in a 4-1 loss to the Texas Stars on Sunday afternoon, Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward offered a stinging fourword indictment of what his squad was missing on this day. “Enthusiasm. Heart. Passion. Character, Ward spat during the post-game press conference, when asked to put his finger on what went wrong. “We deserved exactly what we got today. That’s life. That’s the way it should work. The Heat won the opener of the twogame set on Friday, as early power-play goals by Krys Kolanos and Ben Walter lifted the

hosts to a 2-1 win. But on Sunday, the Stars scored three unanswered goals in the third period en route to the victory. Clay Wilson scored the lone goal for the listless Heat, while the Stars’ third-ranked power play went 2-for-6. The Heat (31-22-3-2) are fifth in the Western Conference, while Texas (25-28-2-2) is still in the basement after splitting the two-game weekend set. The Heat are back in action at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, as they host the Houston Aeros on Tuesday (10:30 a.m.) and Wednesday (7 p.m.). For more coverage, visit abbynews.com

National berth a ‘fantastic accomplishment’: Craddock Pilots sweep Panthers From A20

the one against Alberta, because we still have a chance to go to nationals and prove ourselves.” On Friday, the Cascades led Victoria 59-38 after Friesen opened the fourth quarter by hitting a runner in the lane. But the Vikes took over from that point, reeling off a stunning 24-4 run. After Vikes guard Ryan MacKinnon knocked down a pair of free throws with just over a minute left, UFV was left clinging to a 63-62 lead. Those were the last points scored in the game, though, as UFV hung on down the stretch

to seal a trip to nationals. “It’s a fantastic accomplishment,” Craddock said. “It’s an elusive tournament, and many universities and players never get a chance to compete there.” On Saturday, Friesen made two free throws with less than a minute left to put UFV up 71-69. But Alberta’s Daniel Ferguson responded with a three-pointer on the next trip. On the Cascades’ last possession, Friesen started towards the hoop, but elected to flip the ball out to Jordan Blackman on the right wing. The freshman’s shot was long, and Kyle Grewal tipped

the rebound in, but the buzzer had already sounded.

UFV WOMEN OFF TO REGIONALS The UFV women’s hoopsters were in Regina for their Final Four, and they dropped both games to finish fourth. The Cascades fell 72-56 to the host Regina Cougars on Friday, and 71-65 to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday. “We were pretty inconsistent,” UFV coach Al Tuchscherer said. “We never got any flow going – we were

in foul trouble most of the weekend, and that didn’t help.” The Cascades are still alive for a national championship berth, though – they travel to Ottawa this weekend for a four-team regional tournament, with the winner earning a berth to nationals. UFV is seeded fourth in the region, and they open against the No. 1-seeded host Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday. “We’re going to have to play our best basketball to move on,” Tuchscherer noted. “It isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but we have to put two good games together.”

Justin Dorey’s goal with 51 seconds remaining capped a thirdperiod rally for the Abbotsford Pilots on Saturday, lifting them to a 4-3 win and a firstround series sweep of the Port Moody Black Panthers. The Pilots led 2-0 after the first period, but the host Panthers rattled off a trio of goals in the second to take the lead. But Abbotsford equalized on Travis Grewal’s shorthanded goal at 13:08 of the final frame, and Dorey scored the winner in dramatic

fashion. After taking a pass from Riley Lamb, he beat a Panthers defenceman to the outside, manoeuvred around a pokecheck attempt by goalie Zachary Station and slid the puck home. Game 4 was the only close game of the series – the Pilots won the first three by a combined score of 21-4. The team has a couple extra days off to rest as they await the winner of the Aldergrove Kodiaks and Ridge Meadows Flames series.
