GROW-OP INSPECTIONS: Mission reviews, Abby slows

Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
The District of Mission is reviewing its grow-op inspection process after complaints from those who have run afoul of the bylaw. Meanwhile, Abbotsford’s program is operating at a lower level than in its early days. The local Public Safety Inspection program was formed in 2005, modeled after a similar program in Surrey. By 2007 there were three teams of inspectors, who looked at 725 properties and 150 confirmed grow-ops were shut down that year. So far this year, there have been only 44 grow-ops dismantled in Abbotsford. Only slightly more than that number of properties were searched and found to not contain grow-ops, said city bylaw manager Gordon Ferguson. He explained that the number of tips from the public has dropped dramatically, so now the team acts mostly on information obtained from police. There are no longer three teams. Rather, one bylaw officer coordinates

When they find evidence of a grow op, the house is issued a no-occupancy order, the water is shut off, and the owners are subject to a $3,500 safety inspection fee. Once remediation work is done to the municipality’s satisfaction, a follow-up inspection is done, which brings an additional $1,000 fee. “We ensure the property gets cleaned up properly,” said Ferguson, adding the
municipality also puts a notice on the property title, so future buyers know it was used for a grow-op. Mission follows a similar process, but levies a $5,200 inspection fee. Ferguson said the need for the program has likely reduced because of the success of the inspections, because growers have moved out of the area, or because they have become better at hiding their operations. Mission Mayor James Atebe said the grow-op inspection teams are still
at work in his town, but Mission council is seeking legal advice concerning the stage in the process where homeowners are allowed to present their case before council. Mission Coun. Jenny Stevens said she often does not feel qualified to judge cases when property owners appeal charges, and evidence is often not sufficient for her to feel confident that there was definitely a growop. Stevens said she is all for getting rid of grow-ops. “I would cane them harder if I could.” However, she said innocent people should not be subjected to having their neighbour seeing their home searched by authorities, or charged an unwarranted fee. She hopes council reviews the entire process and makes revisions. Mission dealt with 219 files in 2009, levied 137 inspection fees and 57 nonoccupancy orders. Municipal grow-op inspections have not fared well against court challenges. In 2008, the case Arkinstall vs. the City of Surrey found that the municipality Continued on A7

Tax freeze pitch
Move would improve development, says chamber Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce is urging the city for a four-year business tax freeze. Executive director David Hull confirmed that chamber president Patricia Sapielak intended to speak to council yesterday (Monday) afternoon, to propose the freeze. “We are not asking to pay less,” said Hull, adding business already pays “a disproportionate amount of tax” when compared to homeowners. He said, in general, businesses pay 2.6 times the amount of municipal tax that residential property owners pay. And they don’t get extra services from the city. He added some businesses pay even more, depending on their classification. “The disparity between the two can’t be justified,” said Hull. The chamber’s request is to freeze existing business class

That freeze would affect Class 2 (utilities), Class 5 (light industry), Class 6 (business) and Class 9 (farm) tax folios for the next four years. In total, those business classes represented nearly $40 million
worth of tax revenue to the city this year, out of a total budget of $105 million, including residential. If council were to impose a four per cent tax increase in 2011, a freeze for businesses could represent about $1.6 million in revenue. “We are asking for a four-year

time line because we want to keep it out of the election argument,” said Hull. The next municipal election is set for November 2011. If the freeze is approved, candidates would not be able to make the tax freeze an election issue. Hull also said one-year freezes are usually followed by a huge “make up” hike. While Hull admits some people may not approve of such a freeze, he hopes most of the public will be able to grasp “the big picture. “You have to see it as a development opportunity,” he said. The chamber’s presentation will focus on the potential benefits to the city overall. The chamber believes it will increase development and investment, therefore increasing municipal property tax revenue. Proponents also say it would make Abbotsford an economic leader in B.C. and create a positive climate to help retain existing businesses while attracting new economic opportunities. He points to other recent initiatives, including the airport revitalization tax exemption, and the revitalization tax exemption bylaws as examples of tax breaks that have helped the city. Mystery of man’s death solved Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
The mystery has been solved of what happened to a man who died after he was found suffering from a head injury on Nov. 3. Abbotsford Police have learned that Mark Farrar, 52, was hit by a Ford F-150 on the day of his death, but disappeared from the scene after the driver called 911 and requested an ambulance. Farrar was seen later that day stumbling and falling in the area of Gladys Avenue and George Ferguson Way in downtown Abbotsford. When police and ambulance were called to the scene at about 6:45 p.m., Farrar was found suffering from a head injury.
Medical treatment was administered, but he died in hospital. Abbotsford Police then asked for the public’s help in identifying the circumstances that led to Farrar’s death and released photos of the clothing he was wearing at the time. Const. Ian MacDonald said on Nov. 10, a 41-year-old man reported to the front counter of the Abbotsford Police Department. He said he had been in an accident with a pedestrian – later identified as Farrar – on Nov. 3 at about 2:45 p.m. while driving through the downtown core. MacDonald said it appears Farrar either headed into traffic from between parked cars, or was jay-
walking. He then left the scene, appearing to be unhurt, and the driver lost sight of him. The driver pulled over, ran into a nearby business and asked if anyone had seen in which direction Farrar had headed. He was unable to track him down. The driver then returned home and called the nonemergency number for the police, explained what happened, and asked if anyone had called to say they had been hit by a vehicle. MacDonald said no police file was started on the matter because it was a lowimpact collision and there appeared to be no injuries. He said police received numerous calls from people Continued on A7

The Abbotsford school district is one of 11 agencies in B.C. to receive the Power Smart Excellence Award for 2010. The award was presented on Oct. 25 for the district’s energy management initiatives. These include shutting down computers and monitors when not in use, designing the expansion of Abbotsford Collegiate to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold standards, and piloting real-time electric, gas and water metering at 12 schools. The district has been involved in energy management since the 1990s and has realized a 45 per cent improvement in energy use since then. The district also hired a full-time manager of energy conservation, Rick Walker.
FIRE AT REC CENTRE A fire at Matsqui Recreation Centre (MRC) last Thursday resulted in about 200 people being evacuated from the building. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded to a report of alarm bells ringing just after 4 p.m. A fire had begun in an electrical unit that runs the wave pool, and one of the maintenance staff used a fire extinguisher to get it under control. Fire crews then contacted the school district so that the evacuees, some of whom were in bathing suits, could be sheltered at the nearby Howe Middle School. The pool was closed for the night while repairs were completed.

Appeal dismissed Church considers next move Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
The B.C. Court of Appeal has upheld a previous ruling that four parishes, including St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Abbotsford, are using their properties outside the jurisdiction of their diocese and should vacate their premises. The appeal involving St. Matthew’s and three Vancouver churches – all members of the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) – was dismissed yesterday (Monday). The case against the Diocese of New Westminster was heard Sept. 13 to 17 before a three-judge panel to appeal the ruling made in November 2009. The churches and the diocese have been in conflict over the issue of same-sex blessings. The parishes have maintained that allowing these blessings is contrary to core Anglican doctrine. They broke away from the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC) – to which the diocese belongs and which permits the blessings – to join ANiC. They have refused to leave the properties they occupy. St. Matthew’s is located in Abbotsford at 2010 Guilford Drive. The appeal court judges agreed that because the parishes all began operating under the doctrines of the diocese, they were no longer entitled to retain the properties when they broke away to join ANiC. The properties were held on trust
for ministry as defined by the ACC, the judges said. It has not yet been determined whether the churches will proceed with an appeal in the Supreme Court of Canada, the nation’s highest court and last judicial resort. “Obviously, we are deeply disappointed by this decision, which is currently being reviewed by our legal counsel,” said Cheryl Chang, special counsel for ANiC. “The congregations have always said that if they are forced to choose between their buildings and their faith, they will choose their faith.” Mike Stewart, rector of St. Matthew’s, said church officials will meet tomorrow night (Wednesay) to discuss and pray over the issue. They will then need to meet with their congregation – which totals about 250 people over two services – to consider whether they want to proceed with another appeal. “It’s always been an issue of standing for the truth of the gospel,” he said. Randy Murray, communications officer with the Diocese of New Westminster, said officers, the bishop and legal counsel will meet today to discuss the matter and issue a statement. The churches also appealed an earlier order to pay about $120,000 in court costs to the diocese. The parties agreed that each would bear their own costs of the appeal.

A tax burden shift From A5
council and the general public that a tax freeze is a good idea may take more than a presentation. Council has already given approval in principle to a 3.5 per cent tax increase to its operating budget and another one per cent hike is expected for capital costs. A 4.5 per cent increase to homeowners, coupled with a freeze for businesses, could be a tough sell. Abbotsford Mayor George Peary,
who met with chamber representatives earlier to discuss the presentation, said “if we freeze one sector and not another, we create a shift of the tax burden. “I’m sure the farmers and homeowners would be really excited about that, said Peary. While he credits the chamber for the idea, and said council will discuss it, he was unwilling to speculate on its success.

whom Farrar interacted with after the accident and no one observed any behaviour serious enough to call an ambulance. However, it was later determined that Farrar died from the internal injuries and broken pelvis he suffered in the accident. MacDonald said police have corroborated the driver’s reports through witnesses, recordings and
examination of the vehicle and collision scene. He offered condolences to friends and family of Farrar, who lived in a care home for the last 15 years and was described by staff as “a really nice man. “The Abbotsford Police Department recognizes that while this provides some explanation into what happened to Mark Farrar, the grieving by those who knew him will continue.

Tax freeze a tough sell A four-year tax freeze for Abbotsford businesses? The Chamber of Commerce would like to see such a move, citing a disproportionate burden of taxation on business owners compared to residential taxpayers. The benefits of a moratorium would be increased development, growth and investment, says chamber executive director David Hull. He could well be correct. Reduction of taxes is commonly seen as an economic stimulator. Hull is also right in his assessment of disparity between the weighting of taxes between business owners and homeowners. Local businesses pay on average 2.6 times more in taxes than residential ratepayers. And Hull is accurate again when he surmises it will be a hard pitch. Unless the city is willing to accept the loss of additional revenue such a freeze would represent, and it’s likely to be in the millions of dollars over four years,
the alternative is to compensate the decrease in dollars via the pockets of homeowners. You don’t have to be a long-serving politician in this city to predict that would be about as popular as the HST. Given recent civic policy on business revitalization tax exemptions, policing increases, major spending decisions on infrastructure and facilities, and huge looming expenditures on water and sewer, the City of Abbotsford is hardly in a position to shoulder reduced revenues. Couple that with homeowners feeling increasingly beleaguered by annual residential tax increases and utility fee hikes, and this initiative quickly looks like a non-starter. That’s not to say it doesn’t have long-term merit, nor that it’s patently unreasonable to work toward a better balance between residential and business taxation. The much tougher reality is whether Abbotsford can afford it.
Justice must be seen to be done Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand Not having a great deal of experience standing before a judge, I always puzzle over the rationale of sentencing. Why for instance does a man who hits another, just once, get six years in federal prison, while a woman who admittedly drinks at least three glasses of wine before driving, kills a child, maims her aunt and injures her grandparents, receives only two and a half years? How too do drug smugglers, by offering up the apparently acceptable excuse that “I didn’t know it was in my truck,” get off scott-free? In the case of the first mentioned, the act was described as a “hate crime” . . . a straight guy bashes a gay guy in frustration after being repeatedly approached. My first reaction was, if the obviously homophobic puncher didn’t want to be approached, what was he doing in a gay bar in the first place, and why didn’t he
leave after the first ‘pick-up’ attempt? I can somewhat empathize with his displeasure at being hit on more than once, but that was no reason for an attack that caused great and grievous harm to the victim. Obviously the court agreed, and so the perpetrator was given six years in the slammer where, among other things it can be assumed he will, willingly or not, have his reaction to sexual mano-a-mano changed. However, if for this despicable attack a six-year sentence is appropriate, where is the correlation for the prison time given someone who, equally thoughtless, gets drunk, climbs behind the wheel and kills a child . . . a child, by the way, who was standing at a fence, well off the road and in care of her aunt. There was much talk of the driver being, as I’m sure she was, remorseful and willing to accept full responsibility for her terrible decision and deathdealing action behind the wheel. If she is so willing to take responsibility for this heart-rending tragedy, why is she now appealing what I believe, in comparison to the above, is little more than a slap on the wrist?
If someone gets six years for a devastating punch, then death and injury should result at least in a decade or more behind bars. If we are to side with those who believe incarceration is meant only to penalize those who would do further
Deterrence, obviously, isn’t in the lexicon of many who sit on our courts’ benches. harm to society, and not be seen as retribution for wrong-doing, then I suppose the courts chose wisely. However, if there is no penalty, or just a light penalty, then where is the deterrent … for the person who committed the wrongful act, and for others who shrug off their own transgressions knowing there will be little consequence for their actions, other than to their victims?
Just ask those who smuggle drugs, or operate grow-ops. They get caught, they argue they didn’t know they had the stuff with them, and they walk free. Or last week when a pair, who had been observed attending a West Vancouver grow – in British Properties no less – were then stopped by police after they have left the operation. Unfair said the judge, and chastised the cops rather than the crooks. Deterrence, obviously, isn’t in the lexicon of many who sit on our courts’ benches. We have over time in this great land of ours, created what is known as a ‘just society.’ Unfortunately, somewhere along the line, the root word ‘just’ seems to have been forgotten in the ‘justice’ meted out in some courtrooms. Discretion, exercised through due diligence and based on evidence, in the minds of those who deliver sentences is welcome and needed. But there is still a need, in proper society, for justice not only to have been done, but seen to be done.

letters Churches have to take financial responsibility
Re: Recouping health care costs by suing a church? While I agree with Mrs. Peachey’s condemnation of government flip-flops and spending waste, I had to laugh at the idea that suing a business
for alleged negligence is wrong. If the business that hosted this tragic event was just a local promoter in a local hall, no reasonable person would question the promoter and hall being sued.
Modern churches are run like businesses, in fact, are businesses, some with enormous revenues, and need to be treated as such. I wasn’t surprised to learn while surfing through a seemingly
endless number of web pages devoted to how to run a church in a more business-like manner, that you can now get a Master’s degree in church management. Churches may not have to pay taxes, but they
certainly have to take financial responsibility if they are found negligent for injuries. While we may not know why the Lord allowed the floor to collapse at this Christian event, we can be sure that something went
wrong and that someone from the Earthly realm is at fault. And as a financial supporter of the B.C. medical system (through my taxes), I know it’s not me. Craig Bresett

Re: Bi-monthly water bills I am sure that as our government always does, they have thought this over thoroughly, looking at both sides of the coin. I think the mayor and council members of the City of Abbotsford should follow in the foot steps of ex-premier Gordon Campbell and resign. The reason is the new sports centre which taxpayers are paying for. Who signs a contract for 10 years with a guarantee that the team using the arena will get $5.7 million dollars a year even if the citizens don’t show up? Maybe a contract for three to five years, then after that time, look and see if the city has made any money. I think this was done so the city wouldn’t have a white elephant

for 10 years, and grabbed the first thing that came along. The mayor can’t blame this contract on the old administration, as he is one of the people that said okay to this deal. I would like to see the bank statement and see how much is left on the loan that was taken out for AESC. How much are we paying each year? Again property taxes are going up, why? The services haven’t gotten any better for all the money I give to this city. The sewage still runs downhill, the garbage is collected the same way, and the water goes down the same drains it has for years. Stop giving the new business all these tax breaks, then reaching into our pockets to pay for it. If business want to come into Abbotsford, they should pay for all the costs to see if it is worth it. Every year this city overspends on dumb items like the Discovery trail and its ugly structures, bike lanes that aren’t being used, and the friendship garden that has made more enemies then friends. If you must spend money, spend it on painting new lines on our city roads, so we can see where we are going. Then you waste money putting in smart water meters, just so the city can collect money every two months instead of once a year. What a waste of money on the roundabouts on McCallum and Clearbrook. These will not help traffic flow. When there is an event at the seldomused AESC, the traffic will back up into these circles. The year of 2010 will go down as another year that the City of Abbotsford overspent and looked for us taxpayers to bail them out. Rick Fladager

must put up as a deposit to weed out those only seeking attention and publicity. The deposit fee might be set anywhere between $10,000 and more than $100,000, he said. “They clearly have to set a substantial deposit so only serious contenders enter the race.” Also subject to revision is the current $75,000 leadership
campaign spending limit, which Schreck said is outdated and inadequate. Education minister George Abbott’s statement he’ll quit cabinet if he runs highlights another facet of the race. “If a cabinet minister’s going around the province making announcements on ministry business, he’s also going to increase his exposure and meet party mem-
bers who may vote for him,” Schreck said. That opens up any minister who stays in cabinet during the race to accusations of conflict of interest in
using public funds to campaign. Those outside cabinet – such as former energy minister Blair Lekstrom – would be at a disadvantage. “They don’t have
equal access to those public resources to campaign for the leadership,” Schreck said, adding Abbott has “set the cat among the pigeons” by making it an issue early.

A tug-of-war between the rural and urban factions of the B.C. Liberal party over voting rules will be critical in deciding the next leader and premier, B.C. political analyst David Schreck says. The party executive is considering a move away from the current one-partyone-vote system for choosing a leader to one that would give each of the 85 constituencies equal weight. Schreck said the proposed change would have a massive impact on the outcome. “The balance of power shifts from the Fraser Valley – Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford – to the Interior,” he said. “It means a member in Bill Bennett’s riding in the Kootenays would have the power of 100 or 200 members in Surrey.” The party executive is wrestling with the question and could decide to hold a constitutional convention to settle it ahead of the actual leadership vote. Surrey and Fraser Valley Liberal activists are likely battling behind the scenes to head off a new formula favouring the hinterland, Schreck said. Also to be determined is the date of the leadership convention, the cutoff date for new members to sign up and vote, and whether they’ll have to pay an additional fee to vote at the convention. All three of those variables will affect the influence exerted by political organizers leading any large-scale signups and the chances candidates without a strong power base out of the gate could come from behind. The current $10 party membership fee doesn’t give members the right to vote – the constitution says they have to pay a separate fee to actually cast a ballot for leader. “They could say the fee is zero or they
could say it’s $100,” Schreck said. “That’s very important.” He said a secondary fee should help rein in mass-signups – especially when an organizer signs up and pays for others without their knowledge – as it provides another mechanism for the party to verify a member is legitimate. The party also has to decide how much cash each candidate

Metro Vancouver mayors are being urged to jack TransLink property taxes to finance the Evergreen Line and other transit upgrades on the hope the tax hike can be switched to a more palatable revenue mechanism next year. They will not vote on imposing a vehicle levy to fund transit expansion – at least not yet. TransLink board chair Dale Parker said public opposition to a vehicle levy was “particularly strong” and it’s not a practical option now because it would require provincial government support to collect it efficiently. Metro mayors were briefed on the proposed financial supplement for TransLink, which goes to a vote Dec. 9. The basic option before the mayors would commit TransLink to raise $465 million for TransLink’s share of the $1.4-billion Evergreen SkyTrain line to Coquitlam and the first phase of the North Fraser Perimeter Road. That would cost the average $692,000 home an extra $36.36 in increased tax starting in 2012 ($5.25 per $100,000). Had the vehicle levy, dubbed the Transportation Improvement Fee, been used, it would have instead charged every registered vehicle $15 to $55, depending on the carbon footprint. The board recommends the mayors approve a broader option – dubbed “Moving Forward” – that adds on another $338 million in bus service and SkyTrain station upgrades. That would lift the taxes on an average home by $61.65 a year ($8.91 per $100,000). TransLink cannot propose a funding supplement to the mayors that isn’t financed from sources it has available, although new ones could be on the horizon through ongoing talks with Victoria in line with
an accord struck in September. The proposal would see the mayors pencil in the property tax hike for now to ensure work begins on schedule next year on the Evergreen Line and perimeter road. Because TransLink has saved $40 million from its budget this year, it doesn’t need to start collecting the higher property tax right away, buying time for the mayors and province to negotiate. That means a tax hike approved now could be erased by 2012, before it even kicks in, and be swapped with different funding sources – such as road pricing, a share of carbon tax or even the vehicle levy. The province intends to issue a request for proposals on the Evergreen Line in early 2011. The more expansive “Moving Forward” set of upgrades proposed by TransLink would add 425,000 hours of bus service across the region. Half of that would go to the South of Fraser area.

HST question wording Tom FLETCHER Black Press
“Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)?” That’s the wording of the referendum question submitted to the B.C. government by acting Chief Electoral Officer Craig James. The wording of the question will be debated in the B.C.
legislature when it convenes in February, and is scheduled to be put to a provincewide vote on Sept. 24, 2011. Premier Gordon Campbell has said the government will abide by the will of a simple majority of voters who cast a ballot. James said he “agonized” over the wording of the question for several weeks, beginning with a longer question to represent the intent of the voter initiative sponsored by former

premier Bill Vander Zalm. In the end he decided to shorten the question to make it as clear and simple as possible. Left out of the question is the petition’s demand that any extra tax collected under the HST since it came into effect in July be repaid. James said he will listen to the MLAs’ debate on the question, but he has the final say and he would “need to be persuaded” that changes are necessary.
Out on bail Stabbing incident
Two of the three men charged in connection with the stabbing outside an Abbotsford pub in August have been released on bail. Bhavdeep Deol, 21, and Herman Sidhu, 20, were each granted bail on a $10,000 surety without deposit, meaning someone else is responsible for paying the fee if they breach the conditions of their release. Deol next appears in court on Dec. 2, while Sidhu is scheduled for Dec. 9. Their co-accused, Gurparit Gill, is still in custody. His bail hearing is slated for Nov. 24. All three were charged with aggravated assault. A 24-year-old Abbotsford man was attacked and stabbed Aug. 22 after he left Finnegan’s Pub and Grill at about 1:45 a.m.

New Edge is a safety Getting touchy-feely and security leader with MyFord Touch The wealth of available class-exclusive features added to the 2011 Ford Edge include driver assistance technologies that bring peace of mind. Leading the safety technology for the popular midsize crossover is Ford Motor Company’s exclusive AdvanceTrac with RSC. This electronic stability control system helps maintain a driver’s intended path by measuring side-to-side yaw through steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensors and automatically making braking and throttle adjustments. When wheel slip is sensed, AdvanceTrac reduces engine torque and applies selected brakes. RSC is an additional vehicle control software module that monitors and helps control vehicle roll rate. “With class-exclusive safety technology and solid unibody construction, the 2011 Ford Edge will continue to be a leader in safety,” said Elaine Bannon, Edge chief engineer. “For families who place a premium on safety, the new Edge features several new available technologies that can help avoid an accident.” New available driver assistance and convenience technologies added to the 2011 Ford Edge and how they help include: Adaptive cruise control allows the driver to set the vehicle’s cruising speed, using advanced radar technology to monitor traffic ahead and scan for slower vehicles. The system slows the vehicle to adapt for traffic conditions and maintain the preset distance between vehicles. Once traffic clears, the set speed returns. Gap distance settings can be customized from four predetermined options. Collision warning with brake support helps reduce speed, automatically pre-charges brakes, provides a red warning light on the windshield as well as an audible beep and engages an electronic brake assist system to help drivers stop more quickly when the system detects a collision is imminent. Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert is a feature that can help detect vehicles in blind spots during normal driving, as well as traffic approaching from the sides when reversing out of parking spots. MyKey® is designed to allow parents to encourage teenagers to drive safely and more fuel efficiently, and increase seat belt usage. The standard MyKey feature allows owners to designate keys that can limit the vehicle’s top speed, audio volume and other features. Rear view camera automatically engages when the vehicle is placed in reverse. The camera is located in the liftgate above the license plate, and video is shown on the available 8-inch center stack touch screen with an image providing vehicle centerline, rear bumper orientation and trajectory lines to relate an object’s proximity to the rear of the vehicle. Hill start assist helps keep the vehicle from rolling backward, making it easier to pull away when on a slope or hill. With the brake pedal pressed, if sensors detect the vehicle is on a slope, the system is automatically activated. Brake pressure is held in the braking system and the vehicle remains stationary on the slope for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal.
Ford has outfitted the Edge with its MyFord Touch system, which is basically your dash-mounted media hub that seamlessly ties together your vehicle controls, navigation, mobile phone, and music player. The refreshed Edge brings with it something totally new for Ford – the new MyFord Touch in-car multimedia hub. It’s festooned with an 8-inch dash-mounted touchscreen, dual 4.2-inch reconfigurable displays in the instrument cluster, two USB ports underneath the arm rest, an SD card slot, RCA inputs, Bluetooth support (for audio, phonebook, phone calls, wireless data tethering, and SYNC connectivity), and enough charging ports to keep all your gadgets juiced and ready to go. Every trim level comes with the 8-inch touchscreen, but the GPS navigation maps from Telenav and Sony audio system are only standard on the Sport model.

AHLers take five of six points on East Coast; embattled Sutter rejoins team
Dan KINVIG Abbotsford Heat
The Abbotsford Heat continued to sizzle on the road, claiming five of a possible six points on the far side of the continent on the weekend. The Heat extended their winning streak to five games with victories over
the Providence Bruins (5-2 on Friday) and the Adirondack Phantoms (4-2 on Saturday). The streak was snapped on Sunday, when the Bruins edged the Heat 5-4 in a return engagement in Rhode Island, but the Heat still gained a point for the shootout defeat.
The Heat might be the AHL’s youngest team, but they find themselves atop the AHL’s North Division with an 11-6-0-2 record and 24 points. They’re 6-2-0-1 on the road. “The guys pulled to-
gether and did a real good job,” Heat head coach Jim Playfair said. “We found a way to get some points.” A common theme on the weekend was the productivity of Bryan Cameron. The rookie for-
ward went scoreless in his first 14 games of the season, but he snapped that slump by scoring in all three weekend games. “He’s shooting the puck a lot more,” Playfair said. “That’s the starting point.” The Heat wrap up their five-game road trip with a Friday-Saturday set against

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team capped a history-making season by capturing the school’s first-ever CIS national championship medal in Charlottetown, PEI on Sunday. The Cascades earned bronze in dramatic fashion, edging the Montreal Carabins 3-2 in a game that went to penalty kicks. The shootout went seven rounds, with the Cascades prevailing 5-4. Marie Verbenkov’s successful penalty kick stood up as the game-winner after Montreal’s final shooter sent her attempt wide left. “I’m so proud of our team,” said UFV striker Carly Neeson, who earned player of the game honours for the third consecutive match at nationals and was named to the all-tournament team. “It’s a great way to finish

UFV striker Carly Neeson (17) puts pressure on a Laval opponent during the CIS soccer championships last week. the season.” Hot on the heels of their Canada West title the previous weekend, the Cascades proved they could hang with the best in the nation. UFV opened with a 2-0 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or on Thursday, before falling to the eventual champion Queen’s Golden Gaels 2-0 in Saturday’s semifinal. In the bronze medal game, the Cascades were without team
captain Megan Webster and goalie Chantelle Biagioni due to injury. Vérnique Laveredière scored both Montreal goals in regulation, while Neeson and Danika Snook replied for UFV. The shootout put UFV backup keeper Charmaine Biagioni, Chantelle’s younger sister, on the hot seat. The rookie hadn’t seen game action since the preseason, but she stood tall at crunch time.
“She hadn’t played a minute of CIS soccer, but she stepped in and did well,” UFV coach Rob Giesbrecht marveled. “We told her to be confident, be vocal and have some fun. And she did.” It’s been quite a ride for the UFV women’s soccer program, which hadn’t tasted the playoffs until this season. “We’ve played resilient soccer,” Giesbrecht said.
The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team fought tooth and nail with the Victoria Vikes on the weekend, ultimately splitting a pair of threepoint games at the Envision Athletic Centre. Both teams shot the ball poorly in Friday’s opener, but UFV got just enough offence down the stretch to steal a 53-50 victory. The Vikes held a 35-20 edge at halftime, but the Cascades capped the comeback by out-scoring Victoria 18-5 in the fourth quarter. On Saturday, the Vikes returned the favour. A trio of three-pointers by point guard Marco Dolcetti sparked a 14-2 UVic run to open the third quarter, and the Vikes fended off a series of UFV rallies. UFV’s Sam Freeman counted five three-pointers among his team-high 19 points, while Ryan McKinnon poured in 20 points for the Vikes. The Cascades shot a scorching 14-for-32 from beyond the arc, but Victoria countered by hitting 21 of 31 free throws. UFV had just 10 tries Continued on A24

from the charity stripe, hitting eight. “I tend to think we attack off the bounce a lot,” said Cascades head coach Barnaby Craddock, who was somewhat baffled by the free throw disparity. “That’s something we’re going to have to look at, in terms of finding a way to get to the free throw line. That’s basically the game.” The UFV women’s hoopsters could call their weekend against UVic a moral victory, as they pushed the No. 2-ranked team in the nation to the limit both nights. But no actual victories were forthcoming, as the Vikes won 70-59 and 58-52. On Friday, the Cascades led 32-19 at halftime, but Victoria blew past them with a 32-11 third quarter. On Saturday, the Vikes overcame a redhot shooting performance by UFV point guard Aieisha Luyken, who went 7-for-8 from threepoint range and finished with 23 points. “I think we’ve closed the gap on a lot of teams,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer said. “Now, it’s about learning to get over the hump.” Up next, the UFV hoopsters faces UBC on the road in a Friday-Saturday set at War Memorial Gym (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m. both nights).

driver outside a bar in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Thursday morning. The story made headlines across the continent. Sutter, 23, released a statement on Monday. “I want to apologize to my family, my friends, our fans and the entire Flames family for what took place,” he stated. “I have set the wrong example not only for children who love the Flames and hockey but also for my brother (Christopher, who has Down syndrome) who has been such a great example for me.” For the full statement, visit abbynews.com. Playfair said he’s looking forward to adding Sutter. “I think everybody’s had mistakes, everybody’s done stuff where in hindsight they look back on it and wish they would have changed their actions,” Playfair said. “It is what it is, and it’s over.” Sutter’s return comes at an opportune time for the injury-riddled Heat. Pilots forward Justin Lachance collides with a member of the Delta Ice Hawks on Friday at MSA Arena.
The Abbotsford Pilots had a five-game win streak snapped in emphatic fashion, as teams at both ends of the spectrum gave them fits on the weekend. On Friday, the local junior B hockey club suffered a 7-2 home-ice beating at the hands of the league-leading Delta Ice Hawks. On Sunday, the Mission Icebreakers – who were last in the Harold Brittain Conference heading in – blanked the Pilots 2-0. The Pilots (13-6-1) still hold a comfortable lead atop the Brittain Conference, seven points clear of the Aldergrove Kodiaks, but it’s clear they’re not a finished product yet.
On Friday at MSA Arena, the Pilots and Ice Hawks were tied 1-1 through 20 minutes, but the visitors from Delta broke the game open with five goals in the second period. Liam Harding had a five-point night (two goals, three assists) for the winners, while Riley Lamb and Brad Parker replied for Abbotsford. Icebreakers goalie Michael James Barr was kryptonite for the Pilots on Sunday at Mission Leisure Centre, stopping all 24 shots he faced. Matthew Pesut and Tyler O’Connell scored power play goals for Mission. The Pilots are back in action on Friday, when they host the North Delta Devils (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).
T-Wolves triumph in playoff opener The Robert Bateman junior varsity football team advanced to the quarter-finals of the provincial AA playoffs with a 34-20 victory over Windsor Secondary last week. John Beckerleg came up with a series of big plays late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. With the T-Wolves holding a 28-20 lead and Windsor driving, Beckerleg made an interception and returned it to Windsor’s two yard line. A couple plays later, he ran the ball in for a game-clinching touchdown – his second major of the game. Kent Hicks, Spencer Mavor and Ben Cummings also found the end zone in the victory. The T-Wolves travel to John Barsby Secondary in Nanaimo for their quarter-final game Wednesday. Q On the AAA football scene, the W.J. Mouat Hawks squads make their postseason debuts this week following first-round byes. The Mouat seniors face Carson Graham on Saturday (8 p.m., UBC), while the juniors host Holy Cross on Thursday (3 p.m., Mouat Field).
