Dog show at Tradex attracts 4,000 Kerrie-Ann SCHOENIT Abbotsford News
Thousands of dog enthusiasts flocked to the Tradex building in Abbotsford last weekend for Canada’s largest dog show. Hosted by the Lower Mainland Dog Fanciers of BC, the annual event Oct. 28-31 attracted more than 4,000 people every day. “It was extremely well received,” said event organizer Donna Cole, noting that a number of local care facilities brought patients to the show. “We were very pleased with the attendance. It keeps growing every year.” The event attracts owners, handlers and breeders from across North America. There were more than 1,600 different dogs from 153 breeds and a total of 5,300 entries competing in several classes. A bearded collie from Detroit took home three best in show prizes, while a miniature pinscher from Manitoba was awarded the other top honour. Courtney Whitehead of Port Moody also won the $2,500 junior handling challenge. The four-day spectacle featured obedience trials, handling classes, rallies, vendors, dancing dogs and “meet the breed” sessions, where the public had the chance to pet the dogs and ask questions about specific breeds. There were 68 trade show booths set up selling thousands of products,

The noon-time shows were also a hit with performances from Paws to Dance, Royal City Rockets and Dogwood Pacesetters. Filming of Saturday’s events will air on TSN sometime in December. The show raised money for a number of charities, including the SPCA, Canadian Seeing Eye Dogs, Variety Club and Canuck Place. Q Antique Expo takes over the Tradex building this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults and free for children under 13 years old. The event features a variety of deluxe antiques and vintage bargains, as well as the popular antique identification clinic providing a monetary appraisal of family heirlooms. Antique expert Peter Blundell will be conducting the assessments. He is a fully accredited member of the Canadian Association of Personal Property Appraisers, an author and lecturer on antiques. No arrests in Rain Grill explosion Abbotsford Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a vehicle seen leaving the area moments after the Rain Grill and Bar explosion on March 21. Const. Ian MacDonald said major crime detectives believe the driver might have information that can assist the investigation. The vehicle is described as a 1993-99 silver or grey GMC Jimmy. The four-door vehicle is two-toned with black on the bottom. It has a sunroof and did not have a spare tire on the tailgate. The restaurant, located at 33305 South Fraser Way, was destroyed following a powerful explosion and fire at about 11:15 p.m. – after it had closed for the night. The restaurant’s director, Chris Preston, 39, was found by police outside the building, suffering from severe burns and injuries. He was sent to hospital in critical condition, but survived. The cause of the explosion has not been released by police nor have any suspects been arrested. The restaurant was the site of two arsons in November and December 2008 when it operated as L.A.X. Restaurant and Lounge. It was closed down for several months after the second

Firecracker hospitalizes teen, police respond to 130 calls Abbotsford News
A 14-year-old Abbotsford boy is in hospital with serious burns after a large firework detonated in his hand on Halloween. Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said the teen was among five boys – four 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old – who were setting off fireworks in a neighbourhood near Rotary Stadium just before 8 p.m. The boy lit an M-80 in his left hand, but it exploded before he could throw it. He was rushed to a local hospital with injuries mainly to his hand, but also to his face and chest. MacDonald said at least one of the boy’s fingers was blown off and he will require more than one surgery. The severity of the injuries necessitated his being transferred to a Vancouver-area hospital. According to Wikipedia, the M-80 was originally made in the early 20th century by the U.S. military to simulate
explosives or artillery fire and was later manufactured as fireworks. MacDonald said the one being used by the boy was most likely purchased in the U.S. “We’re trying to figure out how he came to possess this thing.” MacDonald said this is an example of the message police are trying to impart with their Operation Lodestar program – that parents should be informed about where their children are and what they’re doing. “This might be a lesson for the community. If your kid is going out on Halloween, and they’re not in a costume and they don’t have a specific place to be, they’re probably up to something.” MacDonald said this was one of about 130 calls police tended to on Halloween. This compares to an average night of between 50 and 70 calls. Despite Abbotsford’s ban on fireworks, about 40 were related to firecracker noise
A 26-year-old Abbotsford man was arrested in Vancouver early Friday morning after allegedly robbing a Home Depot store on Cambie Street. Shortly after 2:30 a.m., a masked man forced his way into the store, threatened staff with a handgun, and demanded money. After getting some cash, he fled and ran into the street, in front of a police officer driving a marked police car. The officer arrested the man, who now faces charges. His name has not been released.
An M80 firecracker of this type badly injured an Abbotsford teenager. complaints and 30 resulted in the seizure of fireworks. In some cases, police confiscated up to 100 items. Police got an early start to Halloween enforcement on Saturday during a police CounterAttack roadblock on Sumas Way beneath the Highway 1 overpass. A black truck pulled over and two men fled, resulting in police officers chasing them
on foot. The passenger was easy to spot – he was decked out in a satin hot-pink jacket with matching Spandex pants. The two were caught, and the driver was given a 90-day driving suspension, as well as having his vehicle impounded for 30 days. Also during the roadblock, another vehicle contained illegal fireworks, which were seized.
Woman attacked in violent B&E Victim suffers facial injuries Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police have received numerous tips following the release of a composite sketch identifying a suspect in a violent break-and-enter that occurred last Tuesday. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the tips include information from a couple of other police departments that have seen the sketch and thought the suspect looked familiar. The incident resulted in a 20-year-old woman being hospitalized after she returned to her second-
floor townhouse in the 34900 block of Old Yale Road at about 6 p.m. She noticed damage to her door and, upon entering the suite, saw two men loading video games, clothing and electronics. One of the men fled, while the other attacked the woman, striking her several times in the face before leaving. The victim then called police and was taken to hospital for the treatment of facial injuries that included bruises, lacerations and a possible fractured nose. MacDonald said the attack is concerning because most break-and-
enter suspects caught in the act flee the scene or, at worst, push the victim aside; they don’t launch such a brutal attack. “I can’t think of one where it wasn’t a home invasion or grow rip that would have this kind of violence,” he said. Both suspects are described as Caucasian and in their 20s. The first male who fled had brown hair. The one who attacked the woman is described as about 160 pounds and clean-shaven with a square jaw and short, spiky, gelled, light-brown hair. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.
DETECTIVE A TOP COP An Abbotsford police detective has been named second runnerup as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI). John Koppes KOPPES is a fraud investigator who has shared his expertise with police, financial institutions, and the media. He is currently working on a temporary assignment with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. IAFCI is based in California, but has members across the world who are in law enforcement, banking and retail.

A tree branch knocked out power in downtown Abbotsford Monday morning. More than 3,600 customers were left in the dark, after the branch landed on power lines causing a circuit to trip. BC Hydro crews restored power an hour and a half later. The area affected by the power outage is located east of Gladwin Road, north of Marshall Road, west of Sumas Way and south of Arcadian Way.

Abbotsford could gain a new library – and lose an old one. The fate of MSA Centennial Library and the construction of a new 11,000-square-foot, $4-million library was scheduled to be debated at council yesterday (Monday). While information from the meeting was not available at press deadline, a report to council states Centennial Library, located in Jubilee Park, could be decommissioned in favour of a new public library to be created as part of the renovation of Abbotsford Collegiate. The new library would be built in partnership with the Abbotsford school district and located on the school grounds. In total, the library would consist of 15,000 square feet (4,000 for the school and 11,000 public). The study suggests a maximum cost of $4 million. The city has been budgeting $500,000 a year in library reserve since 2009 to help pay the cost. Start-up capital of $395,000 will also need to be approved to equip the library. Centennial Library consists of 5,000 square feet and is in an older building that the report says needs “significant upgrades” and is “not well located” for students and residents. For the past three months, city staff, the school district and the Fraser Valley Regional Library have been examining the options for a new public facility because current library space and resources have been deemed inadequate for the size of the city.

Following an SPCA investigation into the alleged puppy mill run by Mel Gerling, he has sold the business. The SPCA has forwarded the information to Crown counsel, but charges have not yet been laid. “We would like a lifetime ban (on owning animals), possibly some jail time, and some restitution to pay for the thousands of dollars we’ve spent on this case, said Marcie Moriarty, the SPCA’s general manager

of cruelty investigation. On Sept. 24 the SPCA seized 14 dogs owned by Gerling, who was the operator Mountain View Kennels and Puppy Paradise in Surrey. Moriarty said Gerling has notified the SPCA that he is getting out of the breeding business, selling to his partners, but the agency will still proceed with charges. She said the final bill for vet care for the animals was in excess of $10,000. The main issue was “rotting mouths. “We spent thousands fixing those dogs’ teeth.

The SPCA alleges the dogs were kept in substandard living conditions, were sick, overbred and had grooming issues. Gerling confirmed he has sold his business for $1, because the debts of the company were equal to the assets. He will work at the facility – now named Luna Kennels – as a consultant for three months. “I said to hell with it. I’ve had enough, he told The News. “I’m 66 years old. I’m retired. Moriarty said it could be as long as six months before Crown counsel lays charges.

Winds of revolt
Those darn political parties, always trying to out-do each other. First it was the Liberals starting to implode over the harmonized sales tax debacle. Liberal insiders started calling for Premier Gordon Campbell to step down while the party faithful stood behind the leader. Then it was the NDP’s turn. It all started innocently enough with a couple of un-vetted lines penned by Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson. He was turfed from caucus, which started the ball rolling. Every day it seems we hear more New Democrats are disaffected with James’ leadership. Simpson’s riding association executive have supported him and passed a motion calling for a leadership review in 2011. All of a sudden, while it appeared all the NDP had to do was show up in 2013 and they would form government, every-
thing has changed. It seems like Campbell is more likely to survive the internal party revolt than James. One thing the NDP revolt has going for it is that it appears that accidental coup will see James’ ouster sooner rather than later. Campbell, on the other hand, looks like he’ll be able to hang on for a while. Why does that benefit the NDP? Because if they are going to head into the next election with a new leader, better to get one in place now. Same goes for the Liberals. If there is one lesson to be learned from British Columbia politics, it’s that when the winds of leadership change start blowing, they don’t usually stop until they’ve accomplished their goal. It’s hard for any political leader to survive a revolt from within. And that is what we’ve seen with both the Liberals and the NDP. – Black Press
A not-so-happy home on the range Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand This spring, as we all walked around on the Lower Mainland under umbrellas, feeling and looking like mushrooms, such was not the case in the Interior of B.C. As noted in this column a couple of months ago, the lack of rain in the central and northern Interior – the location of a major portion of the province’s ranch country – caused a severe shortage of hay, and cows need feed to overwinter, cheap feed because in cow country every dollar in and every dollar out counts, if you want to continue the lifestyle. And ranching is a lifestyle, certainly not a licence to print money as anyone who runs cattle will tell you. And, it appears the daily media has just discovered this, or at least has just learned that all is not well in cattle country. According to a front page story last week, the inventory of beef cattle in B.C.
is about to be reduced significantly. But let’s face it, no matter the conditions or the cause, the cow-calf end of the beef industry is anything but a lucrative occupation, and unless you inherited the ranch, you’d better have a second income from another source, because your annual calf crop will barely allow you to break even, let alone simultaneously buy a new tractor and feed your family. The current problem – no spring/summer rains, little hay – along with the ever-present fact that the price a rancher receives for calves each fall is always less than what it really costs to produce them, is causing anguish that will have a longterm effect. Ranching has become little more than an expensive form of hobby farming, and that is sad because it was one of the first industries in the province, developed initially to supply food for construction workers building the transcontinental railway. It evolved into a general food source as the population grew, but the realities of terrain, weather and access to markets has always meant that in the grand scheme of things, ranching in B.C. is little more than a supplement to the cattle industry that, along with grain,
dominates agriculture in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Yet, despite the real and potential reduction of cattle herds in B.C., there is little likelihood there will be any significant change in the consumer price of beef, whether it be hamburger, steaks or roasts. In fact, the price we pay here for a slice of prime red meat is based not
Ranching has become little more than an expensive form of hobby farming on the Canadian consumer, but what the Americans are willing to pay because they set the benchmark price, and right now the economic climate down there is such that beef will stay a relative bargain for some time to come. While it may be good for you and me, it’s not for the folks who struggle to make a go of it on the grasslands and ranges of
B.C. Thanks to the weather, many ranchers are being forced to ship to slaughter some, or all, of their breeding stock. And there lies the concern: a ranch cow isn’t like a car . . . just a simple matter of replacing the old with a new one next year. Most ranchers spend years building their herds, cross-breeding varieties to create larger cows, able to produce bigger, faster-growing calves. The more robust the calf, the more money it brings in because its value is based on a perpound price. Once the cow, and her line of breeding is gone, the rancher has to go back to square one. My friend in the northern Cariboo knows that all too well . . . he’s been cross breeding for decades to develop big cows to produce big calves. This fall, he tells me, he’ll be shipping 250 bred cows because there isn’t enough home-grown hay to over-winter them, and hauling in hay from wetter parts just isn’t cost effective. So there goes not only a big bunch of his cows, but next year’s calves as well. And you thought you wanted to be a cowboy when you grew up! markrushton@abbynews.com

We are told we need upgrades to our sewer and water. I would label that a true “need.” We may “want” to partner with the YMCA at a cost of tens of millions. And we may want to put further millions into a new library on Bevan Avenue, while at the same time closing the downtown branch. But do we need a new recreation centre, or to trade one library location for another – particularly when parking in the Bevan area comes at a premium (shades of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre)? And is it possible that your answer depends on whether or not you are a politician? As far as our premier’s attempt to bribe us with our own money – how about we wait for that until our provincial debt starts tracking in the right direction. Regina Dalton

Better informed
I was really glad that Premier Gordon Campbell gave his address on Wednesday night. I think a lot of people tuned in, only knowing what Carole James and Bill Vander Zalm told them about the HST. In the end, people walked away informed, even if they still don’t like the tax. And as a university student, the 15 per cent income tax reduction for people on their first $72,000 of income was great news. Tax cuts work, and I like more money in my pocket. I wasn’t too happy with Carole James’s response. She said she opposed the tax cut for working families, even though the NDP is supposed to “represent” them. The NDP won’t stand up for anything – unless it’s opposition to a tax cut. James Plett

To tax or not to tax – that may be the question. Our fine city is considering a three or four or five per cent increase in property taxes. At the same time our premier has announced a further cut in income taxes. The city’s argument is that costs continue to rise. The province’s argument is that money in our pockets will renew the provincial economy. Two different situations, of course. But are they both right? Or not? I’m going for the “or not.” Our city’s operating costs are in dire need of review. When local families are forced to make difficult financial choices, our city should not simply rely on business as usual. And when it comes to capital costs, it’s time to look at what is needed over what is wanted.

In his televised address last week, Premier Gordon Campbell said one out of five B.C. students currently fails to meet the Grade 4 achievement level for reading, writing and math skills. Campbell announced three measures designed to eliminate that problem by 2015: Q adding 100 more StrongStart early learning centres, for a total of 400 facilities where parents can bring pre-kindergarten children for programs with an early childhood educator; Q introducing individual skills assessment for children entering kindergarten; and Q $8.9 million per year for new support and training for teachers to give “intensive assistance” to students who need it to meet the grade four standards.

Upscale model for the compact car market Contrary to its laid-back name, the new Cruze is Chevrolet’s first serious challenger in Canada’s all-important compact car segment. Designed by parent General Motors’ Korean Daewoo division, our U.S.-made, front-wheel-drive, five-passenger 2011 Cruze sedan has been on sale in other markets for more than a year. GM Canada is certainly serious about the Cruze’s pricing. Starting at $14,995, the LS will come with a naturally aspirated 138 hp, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, matched to a six-speed manual transmission. An autobox with manumatic shifting and an equal number of gears is optional. While GM Canada says even the base Cruze will have the most standard safety features in its class (10 standard airbags; five-star crash ratings; standard stability and traction controls), and those lowball LS Cruzes will look good in newspaper ads, the volume seller is expected to be the midlevel, LT Turbo models. Priced more in line with the imports at $19,495, the Cruze LT Turbo (with the
autobox and air-conditioning as standard) comes with a smaller (1.4L) yet blown, four-cylinder that has the same amount of power as the base 1.8, but with 23 more lb-ft of torque, rated at 148. he-line Cruze LTZ There’s a top-of-the-line ch niceties Turbo, too. It adds such ats and as heated leather seats a two-tone interior. At $24,780, though, it’s ke not expected to make up a big chunk of Cruze sales. Also on the luxury front, never-seen-beforein-a-Chevy-compact options (like in-dash navigation) speak of o GM’s commitment to rom the separate the Cruze from more workmanlike Cobalt. Taking 9.1 secondss to go from zero to 100 km/h, GM says the Cruze LT Turbo is quicker than its autobox-equipped Japanese rivals. But there’s no overtly sporty Cruze to match a Civic Si or
Corolla XRS — let alone the 263 hp Mazdaspeed3. At least you can play sporty car dress-up with a Cruze RS appearance package. Instead of p performance, Chevrolet
is playing up the Cruze’s fuel economy ratings. Despite having generous amounts of grunt (20 more lb.-ft. of torque than the
Civic and Corolla base engines) the Cruze LT Turbo is rated at a competitive 8.5L/100 km city. While at 5.5L on the highway, it’s better than the automatic-equipped JJapanese p trio. The Cruz Cruze LS’s 1.8 unit with the manual also scores a competitive 7.8L/100 km city and a par parsimonious 5.4L on the highway. Wa Want more savings at the pumps? The There’s a Cruze Eco model w the 1.4 turbo and manual with g gearbox, promised by the end o this year, priced the same as of t LT Turbo. It’s been tweaked the t eke out an “expected” to se segment-leading 5.0L/100 km on the highway. Th Chevy compact has plenty The of room, is nicely made, goes down the road wit with no muss or fuss, and offers excellent fue fuel economy when optioned with the turbo engine. More importantly, for the first time ever, Chevy isn’t forcing indulgent drivers to sacrifice fuel economy by forcing them into a larger vehicle.

Growing pains?
UFV soccer women clinch first playoff berth Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
In the wake of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team’s historic triumph over the Lethbridge Pronghor ns on Sunday afternoon, the sweet sound of victory was audible to anyone standing within 20 feet of the Cascades’ locker room door. “Lean on me, when you’re not strong . . .” Wait, is that what I think it is? “I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on.” Yup, it was the Bill Withers soul standard, sung by 21 elated athletes standing in a circle with their arms around each other. “Lean on Me” is both a team bonding ritual and a rallying cry for the Cascades. The exercise was initially pitched to the team by assistant coach Alan Alderson, and after every victory this season, the UFV women croon/warble/belt it out together. Corny? Maybe. Inspirational? Definitely. “Our team really connects over it,” Cascades captain Megan Webster said with a grin. “It’s a team bonding thing, and it makes us all really happy. It’s fun.” The vibe was pure joy, and why not? With their twin weekend wins at Bateman Park – 3-1 over Calgary on Saturday and 3-0 over Lethbridge – the Cascades punched their ticket to the Canada West final four, marking UFV’s first post-season appearance in five CIS soccer campaigns. The No. 3-seeded Cascades take on No. 2 Trinity Western in the Canada West semifinals in Edmonton on
Saturday. Q The UFV men’s soccer squad wrapped up the season on a
winning note, blanking Lethbridge 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. Q Two games into the 2010-11 campaign, the University of the
Fraser Valley women’s basketball team has already matched its win total from last season. The Cascades swept the Manitoba Bisons at home, winning 71-58 on Friday and 72-44 on Saturday. Q Both games between the Cascades and Bisons men’s hoopsters came down to the final possession, and UFV came out on the wrong end of 72-71 and 83-80 scores. Big wins for ’Canes, Hawks The Rick Hansen Hurricanes kept their playoff hopes alive by the slimmest of margins, edging crosstown rival Abbotsford Collegiate 21-20 in AA varsity football action Friday at Rotary Stadium. Late in the fourth quarter, the Panthers were driving deep in Hurricanes territory in search of the winning points, but Hansen’s Steven Martinez picked off Carter Williams’s pass on the one yard line to preserve the victory. Hansen improved to 2-3 in AA Eastern Conference play, and can clinch the division’s fourth and
final playoff spot with a win at Pitt Meadows on Friday. On the AAA football scene, the No. 1-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks paved the way for a tantalizing showdown with the No. 2 Terry Fox Ravens this coming Friday, preserving their undefeated record with a 35-6 home victory over the St. Thomas More Knights. Elsewhere, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves dropped a 30-29 decision to the Frank Hurt Hornets in AA Tier 2 action. For a complete varsity football wrap, visit abbynews.com
Heat sink Admirals Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
A prime-time performance from goalie Jean-Philippe Lamoureux and a potent penalty kill powered the Abbotsford Heat to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday. Lamoureux, recalled from the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies on Thursday because No. 1 goalie Leland Irving was nursing a knee injury, stoned ex-Heat forward Jamie Lundmark on a penalty shot late in the first period. That save, one of 22 on the night for Lamoureux, preserved a 1-0 Abbotsford lead, and allowed the Heat offence time to hit high gear. The home

The Admirals finally got to Lamoureux for two garbage-time goals, but it was too little, too late as the Heat (6-5-0-1) won for the second time in six tries at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

Lamoureux said he was focused on making the most of the opportunity to establish himself at the AHL level. “I don’t have the luxury of easing into the season,” he acknowledged. “I’ve got to come out of the gate and get wins for the team if I’m going to stay an AHLer. “I was happy to play a real steady game.” Cam Cunning and Matt Keith, with his team-leading seventh of the season, also scored for the Heat, who resume their homestand with a FridaySaturday set against the San Antonio Rampage. The Rampage are the Phoenix Coyotes’ AHL affiliate.
