Three families who have been impacted by the use of ecstasy are working with the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) in an awareness and education program about the dangers of street drugs. Const. Ian MacDonald said representatives from each of the families have given their support to the initiative, called Operation X, and will work with police in the creation of a video and school presentations. “They are tied to the community and have a vested interest in helping others ... We’re talking about families committed to help other youth,” MacDonald said. The families are related to Tyler Miller and Cheryl McCormack, who both died from ecstasy late last year at the ages of 20 and 17, respectively, and a 24-year-old woman who was in critical condition, but is now recovering after ingesting ecstasy on New Year’s Eve. the misconception that ecstasy is safe and doesn’t contain harmful ingredients. It depicts a bag of ecstasy, which looks like candy, with a nutrition label listing the ingre-
dients and a warning. In addition to the poster series, which will continue until the end of the school year, Police Chief Bob Rich composed a letter to all parents and students
in the Abbotsford school district. The letter was emailed in English and Punjabi. The letter addresses the recent ecstasy deaths and urges parents to educate themselves and have a meaningful discussion with their kids about drugs. “The Abbotsford Police Department is committed to doing everything it can to help keep all the young people in our community safe,” it stated. Another component of Operation X is promoting the Youth Line, which was initiated in 2009 as part of the APD’s anti-gang initiatives. MacDonald said teens and parents are encouraged to use the line for advice or to talk about drug and gang issues. He said other portions of Operation X are still in development. It is hoped that the video will be ready before grad ceremonies this year, while school presentations will likely begin in September. Last year we participated through our District in the building of a school in Afghanistan, and providing materials for the students’ education. This building will provide schooling on an ongoing basis to many children who otherwise would not have an opportunity to attend school. These missions involve providing free reconstructive operations to children with cleft lips and/or palates. Each mission assists 100 children, and Ken has been involved in 15 different missions all over the world to-date. He always returns with stories of children’s lives being changed by giving them hope, acceptance and a future. Another program Rotary International is involved with is Polio Plus. Since its inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received oral polio vaccine. All of these projects, while very different, do build goodwill and promote peace. The healthier and more educated a community, the greater the opportunity to foster friendship and acceptance of others.

Agrifair gets $90,000 to stage event Eight community groups receive city funding Abbotsford council has approved funding requests from eight agencies, and has deferred a decision for Ledgeview Golf and Country Club. Six of the agencies received the same amount as last year, except for MSA Museum Society, which is up $25,000 from 2011, and Abbotsford Restorative Justice, which received $20,000 more than last year. Ledgeview is seeking $250,000 in funding, and the matter will be considered at the council meeting on March 5. Funding requests that were approved for: – Agrifair – $90,000 (Fair organizers reduced their request from $200,000 last week, after receiving news of more provincial funding); – Abbotsford Arts Council – $18,000; – The Reach Gallery Museum – $625,000; – Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center – $14,000; – MSA Museum Society – $75,000; – Restorative Justice – $120,000; – Tourism Abbotsford – $70,000; and – Abbotsford Youth Commission – $195,000.

It appears the provincial government will not be entering into a debate regarding the legality of the Abbotsford Heat supply fee agreement with the city. In November of 2011, then council candidate Vince Dimanno obtained a legal opinion on the controversial 10-year deal from lawyer Andrew Rebane of the law firm Yearwood & Company in Port Kells. Rebane had reviewed the city’s 10-year supply fee agreement with the hockey squad and determined that it was in contravention of the Community Charter. According to Rebane, the city should have asked for permission from the electorate before signing the agreement because the contract was for a duration of more than five years and it incurred a liability. More than 300 people came out to support the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s annual fundraiser on Saturday night. This year’s event, called Venetian Masquerade – A Journey of the Heart, took place at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre, raising funds for hospice’s Holmberg House and its front line services. During the evening’s festivities, Dave Holmberg Sr. announced he would match all donations gathered during the live auction and the Capital Campaign fundraising segments. Hospice executive director Debbie Lehmann said the final numbers were not yet tabulated as of Monday. “We’re safe to say that Dave could well be matching approximately $50,000,” she said. This year’s event had a fundraising goal of $100,000, which Lehmann said will easily be met. “I’m confident that it should surpass $150,000.” Brian Lee, of Lee’s Fine Jewellery, was also an active contributor. During the event, Lee was passing out custom designed sterling silver memorial butterfly necklaces to anyone who contributed $1,000 or more. “And if a donor at the event goes to his store with the necklace, Brian will put a diamond in it for them,” said Lehmann. Final figures will be released later this week.

Vancouver provincial court Judge Malcolm MacLean was correct last week to block the B.C. government’s application to televise the trials of the people charged in the Stanley Cup riot. While Premier Christy Clark and the government lawyers argued the case was an attempt to improve transparency of the justice system, it was really more about humiliating the people accused of trashing downtown Vancouver so as to discourage others from doing the same in the future. It was, after all, the second hockey riot in Vancouver in a generation, the previous occurring in 1994. Some cynics have suggested the TV proposal was an attempt to exploit, for political purposes, the wave of outrage and revulsion inspired by the events of June 15, 2011 after the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, an event marked by a riot that caused nearly $4 million in damages. So far, about four dozen people have
been charged with participating in the violence. Broadcasting their testimony in court would give everyone a chance to see what exactly they look like. It would clearly identify them to their friends, neighbours and employers who might not wait for the court to decide if they were guilty. Mob justice for a mob, you might say. Much like medieval times, when the same goals of humiliation and deterrence were accomplished by locking someone in a pillory, and leaving them like that for several hours, at the mercy of a taunting, jeering public. The practice fell out of fashion because mobs have been known to lose control and inflict harsher than intended punishment, a prospect that seems to have escaped the people who supported what has become known as “Riot TV.” There is a case to be made for video coverage of Canadian court trials to improve transparency and give the public a better sense of the process. Other Hand I have an aversion to washing dishes – not that I don’t like them clean, I simply find the task of scrubbing them by hand distasteful. That is one of the reasons I often take a guy like Kevin the Car Salesman with me when I venture into the northern woods. I cook, he cleans. So without the services of a camp flunky (though far be it from me to ever describe him that way) when occasionally I’m forced to feed myself at home, I often drop by the deli section of the local supermarket and pick up a couple of packages of cole slaw and potato salad. Chuck a steak on the barbie, spoon the goop out of the containers and, upon consumption of said meal, the plate and utensils go in the dishwasher, the remains of the
salads into the fridge. No fuss, no muss and virtually no cleanup. My kind of cooking! However, recently after undertaking such a project, and on putting the products away, I happened to notice the “Packed On” dates stamped on the salad’s container labels – one was seven days old, the other 13! Now I don’t know how long stuff like potato salad can sit in a deli cooler, and still be good, but 13 days has to be stretching it. Homemade stuff, I’ve been led to believe, has a much shorter shelf life, with all manner of admonitions being remembered about what can happen when eggs and mayo and other ingredients ‘grow together’ within the mosaic of mushed spuds. In other words, eat it fresh or risk the threat of botulism. So there I stood, digesting a nice steak, wondering if the rest of my evening was to be spent sitting in front of the TV, or sitting on ‘the throne.’
Fortunately, no ill effects resulted from my consumption, though I did relish a rant on the product care of supermarket sales, when the usual provider of things culinary arrived home. “Don’t you look at the labels and dates before you buy them?” was all

I’d expect the market to ensure stuff was fresh. Thus I won’t be buying any more “fresh” stuff from the store that produced these salads, despite believing that if a complaint was
lodged, there would probably be an offer of reimbursement and a blushing apology. Thanks, but too late. Lesson learned. From now on my foraging forays will include checking “best before” and “packed on” dates on products that are purportedly sold as “fresh.” But I have to wonder why that would be necessary. To preserve their customer base, shouldn’t supermarkets take it upon themselves to discard products that have a limited shelf life once they have passed a certain date? I will also be following closely the diligence with which Kevin, if he ever again chooses to accompany me to the Cariboo, scrubs the camp pots. It’s one thing to face the possibility of spending considerable time in my residential bathroom, quite another to do so, especially during mosquito season, in an old and decidedly rustic outhouse which has long passed its best-before date.

Acceptable public entertainment Re: Lingerie football The women involved do not appear to be exploited, and take the game very seriously as athletes. It appears to be a fast-moving game with lots of intensity. There is an element of sexual energy to the game, which is linked to the marketing strategy. It would likely appeal to a certain demographic, such as sports-oriented males in the 20 to 35 age bracket. The lingerie league is paying the facility rent
up front and not seeking municipal subsidies, unlike a local hockey club. The outfits look more like bathing suits and not lingerie – skimpy, but no more so than beach volleyball players or even swimmers. My assessment is that it’s within the range of acceptable public entertainment and can only help the local economy, so it should go ahead. Ian Mackenzie

Every time I see a bus I get sick! There is a half-million-dollar-plus set of wheels and a $50-60,000 driver behind the wheel transporting one or two passengers from Abbotsford to Chilliwack or Mission. Even in Abbotsford or the surrounding communities, buses do the rounds with only a few passengers on board, sometimes no passengers at all. BC Transit could not organize the proverbial “party in a brewery,” and the municipal folks responsible for engaging bus service seem ecstatic that bus service is in abundance in their communities, regardless of the unneces-
sary cost and lack of usage. Unfortunately, you and I are paying the price for their jubilance and irresponsibility. Much smaller buses could be utilized, as is currently being done in Surrey and other communities. A 15-20 passenger bus costing less than a fifth of those behemoths currently in use would make sense. In fact, as and when appropriate, utilizing taxi service may be much more fiscally responsible, and those who need bus service would continue to enjoy transportation at the current cost. City asked for $10,000 for stylized daffodil A new public art piece could cost the city $10,000. A proposal set to go before council on Monday is asking for funding, half of the estimated $20,000 price tag, to create an art piece at Bradner Road, close to Highway 1. The city was asked by the Bradner Community Association which wants to create a stylized daffodil. Bradner has hosted an annual flower show for the past 83 years. “They approached us,” said Mark Taylor, the city’s general manager of Parks, Recreation and Culture. “They liked what happened at Clearbrook and
McCallum and said ‘can’t we do something on the highway near Bradner.’” The association is proposing a 50/50 deal on cost, to a maximum contribution of $10,000 which Taylor said is the only way a project like this could get funding. This idea is not part of the city’s public art policy which ties art to new capital construction. Taylor said if approved, the funds would come from general revenue. The funding would be a onetime only payment as the Bradner Community Association would be responsible for maintenance once constructed.

The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Canadian Cup Series is coming to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) Feb. 24-25 and some of this country’s best riders, along with riders from around the world, will be here to compete. Among them is Manitoba native Zane Lambert. Tristan Etienne’s surprise return to the lineup provided a huge emotional spark for the W.J. Mouat senior boys basketball team, and he helped
power the Hawks to a second-place finish at the Fraser Valley East AAA playoff tournament. On Jan. 11, the 6’9” centre underwent open heart surgery to repair a hole in
his heart, and he was expected to miss the rest of the season. But the Grade 10 athlete made an unusually quick recovery, and was cleared to return to game action last Thursday.
Hawks coach Rich Ralston held Etienne out of Thursday’s FV East quarter-final, a 66-64 win over Abbotsford Collegiate. But Etienne was raring to go, and he played limited min-
utes in Friday’s 72-63 semifinal win over the Yale Lions, and Saturday’s 73-61 loss to the Walnut Grove Gators in the final. “Against Yale, he was very important,” Ralston said of
