The brakes are off. As the working landscape changes apace, norms around how we work are being reconstructed for the digital age. With companies freeing themselves from the costs of maintaining large physical spaces and having gotten used to Zoom, a new era beckons. According to Upwork’s Future Workplace Report, a quarter of the office-based American workforce is expected to work remotely by the end of 2023. The shift is playing out across the globe, in real time. How often have you strolled past a Palma café only to see half a dozen people tapping away at their laptops? The digital nomad trend is currently highest in the 30 to 40 age group, and jobs in tech, marketing and creative industries dominate. Far from being a Silicon Valley perk, after the US, Spain is their most visited country of choice. Ya no hay freno. El panorama laboral cambia a un ritmo vertiginoso y las normas que rigen el trabajo se están adaptando a la era digital. THE NEW NOMADIC Thomas Clarke, 43, lives in Palma, and blogs about politics under an alias. Equipped with an Irish passport, Clarke isn’t part of a burgeoning group planning on applying for Spain’s new digital nomad visa scheme, which launched in June. He tends to work in his apartment, but understands the appeal of co-working spaces: “Sometimes, it’s just a nice change of pace to write and research somewhere a little livelier, around other people” he says. “Oddly, I’m more productive with background noise.” Just as laptop-friendly cafes and dedicated flexible workspaces have ballooned in London, Madrid and Barcelona, expect the same to start happening in Mallorca’s capital. While many of us aren’t yet ready – or willing – to go full digital nomad, we’re feeling the ripple effect of this global step change. As companies feel more at ease allowing for hybrid working and collaborating with remote professionals, there is golden opportunity here for better work-life balance. You don’t have to be a 30-year-old UX designer to feel the benefit of alternative environments, and an all-round healthier attitude to work.

A BEAUTIFUL BALANCE So, what’s the catch? One common complaint of the wandering breed of digital nomad is a sense of isolation that comes with having no fixed address. Additionally, always being able to connect can blur the lines between work and leisure. Text by Fátima Carasol Edgar Lagassi is certainly no stranger to the world of hospitality. On the contrary, he and his partners Mariusz Szymecki and Andrius Kulbokas are true experts. After more than 20 years working in London with some of the top hospitality companies, including Soho House, they joined forces to open their own consultancy company. But it was a trip to Mallorca that set them on a whole new and unexpected journey. After completely falling in love with the island, they also observed that while most restaurants boasted amazing locations, they could use some help in terms of service, concept or marketing - that’s how Five Senses Collection was born. Text by Anna Mason You wake up wrapped in crisp cotton sheets, a glow from the morning sunrise filtering through into the room. Last night’s flight was late, but the short hop from airport to hotel meant the journey was easy. With the dawning realisation you have nowhere to go; no work or meetings, you stretch out in the blissfully comfortable bed. At breakfast in the garden, you take a bite of juicy peach and Parma ham, sip an aromatic coffee and marvel at the lush green surroundings. The air is scented with flowers and in the distance, the Galatzó mountain can be seen rising from the magical Puig de Galatzó nature reserve, waiting to be explored.

A technician working at the facilities of this English tournament inspects, cares for and monitors the new grass courts at the club to ensure that they are in the best condition possible. Close to the grassy slopes stands the main building, a fine, elegant construction with a restaurant on the ground floor where you can enjoy a snack or dinner in an idyllic setting surrounded by olive and carob trees. Drew Aaron and Juanita Casanas established Lionsgate Capital in 2016 to bring a mortgage brokerage and luxury finance company to the Balearic Islands that would offer unparalleled service to affluent clients with the same standard of service they would receive in a major city like New York, London, or Berlin. About 90% of their clientele are cash buyers, who don't need financing, but are interested in an alternative vehicle to avoid the hefty Wealth Tax in the Balearics, maintain liquidity, and make the most of competitive interest rates. AN ARTISTIC DIRECTION In 2018, Drew branched out into the art space with the opening of Gallery Red, bringing the best in the top global established and emerging contemporary artists to Mallorca and Spain. At present, they have 18 total locations, 12 of which are in the heart of Palma’s Old Town; "And we are growing fast, much quicker than we expected," Drew tells us. In the first, which caters for children from 3 to 11 years old for their Infant and Primary studies, there is a group of children who come to school early in the morning and are greeted personally by their headmistress, who wishes them a very good day at school. In the second one, dedicated to children from 5 to 18, we see a group of students sitting around a table writing a class paper; in the background, a palm grove, hills and a warm blue sky. Nearby, in the swimming pool, other students are taking a dip. In both cases, what we perceive is precisely what BIC is all about: happy children. For those who aren’t aware of Son Armadams, it’s a neighbourhood beside the capital’s seafront promenade. The area is set to be transformed thanks to Scandinavian investors and the expertise of the architect. Together with the team, they will be converting three abandoned buildings, former squats and a brothel, into stunning contemporary apartments.

Quite the contrary, they captivate from the very first glance: pure, minimalist white lines that contrast with the blue of the Mallorcan sky, open spaces, lots of Mediterranean light, glass and metal, but also walls of traditional Mallorcan marge and sandstone. A beguiling mix of contemporary and sophisticated style with a Mallorcan touch. "We have developed projects with a modern aesthetic, featuring modular designs, large windows and Bauhaus lines, but also others where the traditional Mallorcan aesthetic predominates, yet with very modern interiors. Our clients, mostly Germans, like to preserve the Mallorcan identity, but of course adapted to the 21st century," says Joan Ignaci Bibiloni, one of the founding partners, representing the Mallorcan branch of the studio.

Los proyectos del estudio de OIB Architecture no dejan indiferente a nadie. Al revés, cautivan desde el primer instante: líneas blancas, puras y minimalistas que rasgan el azul del cielo mallorquín, espacios abiertos, luz, mucha luz mediterránea, vidrio y metal, pero también paredes del tradicional marge mallorquín y piedra de marés. Text by Miguel Ángel Vicente de Vera A house facing the sea is the dream of a whole generation: waking up every morning to the gentle whisper of the waves as they caress the shore, feeling the western breezes on your face or watching the sun in the afternoon as it slowly fades into the horizon. This new project by Palomino Arquitectos, with the collaboration of Project Manager Petra Lavin, takes this desire to a new dimension: a deep connection and integration with the sea and the environment, a warm atmosphere that embraces everyone who visits it and eco-friendly, km0 building standards.

Una casa frente al mar es el sueño de toda una generación: Levantarse cada mañana con leve susurro de las olas al acariciar la costa, sentir en el rostro la brisa de poniente o contemplar al atardecer como el sol poco a poco se desvanece en el horizonte. Este nuevo proyecto del estudio Palomino Arquitectos, con la colaboración de la Project Manager, Petra Lavin, lleva este anhelo a otra dimensión: una profunda conexión e integración con el mar y el entorno terrestre, una atmósfera cálida que abraza a todo aquel que la visita y unos principios constructivos ecológicos y de kilómetro cero.

This could well be the principle of Architecture and Interior Design Studio Ginard Luethje Wolf, because they are master craftsmen of light. In their architectural projects, light - and of course shadows - are a main element that floods the space, creating an ambience or evoking a state of mind. Another element that characterises this Mallorcan-German creative team, based in the southeast of Mallorca, is its holistic process, which accompanies the client from the initial idea to its final materialisation. Throughout the project they offer personalised and close support, ranging from architectural design to interior design, furniture design, colour theming and, of course, lighting design. La última frase que dijo el poeta y novelista alemán Johann Wolfgang von Goethe fue: “luz, más luz”. Este bien podría ser el principio del estudio de arquitectura y diseño interior Ginard Luethje Wolf, porque son unos orfebres de la luz. En sus intervenciones arquitectónicas la luz, -y por supuesto las sombras que proyecta- son un elemento principal que inunda el espacio, crea un ambiente o evoca un estado anímico. Otro elemento que caracteriza a este equipo creativo mallorquino-alemán, situado en el sureste de la isla, es su proceso holístico, que acompaña al cliente desde la idea hasta su materialización final. En todo el proyecto ofrecen un acompañamiento personalizado y cercano, que va desde el diseño arquitectónico hasta el diseño de interiores, pasando por el diseño de muebles, temática de color, y por supuesto, el diseño de luces. Text by Ché Miller “A big table is more than an investment, it’s a part of the family,” begins Marc Kuenzle, founder of The Big Table Studio. Surrounded by impressive slabs of wood at their showroom in the heart of Palma’s Old Town, it’s easy to picture multitudes of friends and family gathering for meals and celebrations, and above all creating memories. Moving to the island is often fulfilling a dream, and part of that dream is invariably being surrounded by loved ones. A ‘big table’ is synonymous with coming together and represents part of that Mallorcan dream being realised. "Una gran mesa es más que una inversión, es parte de la familia", comienza diciendo Marc Kuenzle, fundador de The Big Table Studio. Rodeado de impresionantes planchas de madera en su sala de exposiciones en el corazón del casco antiguo de Palma, es fácil imaginar multitudes de amigos y familiares reunidos para comidas y celebraciones, y sobre todo para crear recuerdos. Trasladarse a la isla es a menudo cumplir un sueño, y parte de ese sueño es invariablemente estar rodeado de seres queridos. Una "gran mesa" es sinónimo de reunión y representa parte de ese sueño mallorquín hecho realidad. „Ein großer Tisch ist mehr als eine Investition, er ist ein Teil der Familie", beginnt Marc Kuenzle, Gründer von The Big Table Studio. Umgeben von beeindruckenden Holzplatten in seinem Ausstellungsraum im Herzen von Palmas Altstadt fällt es leicht, sich vorzustellen, wie viele Freunde und Familienmitglieder sich zu Mahlzeiten und Feiern versammeln und vor allem gemeinsame Erinnerungen schaffen. Der Umzug auf die Insel ist oft die Erfüllung eines Traums, und ein Teil dieses Traums ist es immer, von seinen Lieben umgeben zu sein. Ein ,,großer Tisch" ist ein Sinnbild für das Zusammenkunft und stellt einen Teil dieses mallorquinischen Traums dar, der in Erfüllung geht.

LOCAL CRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS SUSTAINABILITY The Big Table Studio sources a lot of their wood, like teak and suar from Indonesia, where suar grow up to 28 metres tall and two metres wide. This allows hefty tables to be made from a single piece, although, the table is always assembled and finished here in Mallorca. The studio has its own workshop in Consell, where their master carpenter carefully customises the product to the client’s specifications. “There is always a Mallorca connection,” Marc tells us, “Whether it’s entirely produced here in our workshop or ultimately treated and finished.”

Esto permite fabricar mesas robustas de una sola pieza, aunque siempre se montan y terminan aquí, en Mallorca. El estudio tiene su propio taller en Consell, donde su maestro carpintero personaliza cuidadosamente el producto según las especificaciones del cliente. "Siempre hay una conexión mallorquina", nos dice Marc, "tanto si se produce íntegramente aquí, en nuestro taller, como si finalmente se trata y se acaba".

To begin with, it is celebrating a decade on the island of Mallorca, 65 years since it was founded in Germany, and it will soon be opening a new shop in Palma specialising in kitchens. Throughout this long journey, class, good taste and sophistication have been the common denominator of this interior design company. It began as a family upholstery business in 1941 and gradually grew into a company which emblematic hotels and the owners of superyachts and houses could trust with their elaborate projects. Since launching a new showroom in Palma last year, the Dutch company has become even more accessible to their clients in Mallorca and the rest of the Mediterranean. The well-established leaders in building materials, Duran, opened a striking new showroom in Santanyí’s S’Olivó Industrial Park. Designed by AR3, the voluminous exterior presents a bold contrast of natural stone and metal which integrates with the natural environment and interacts cleverly with the light. The showroom has been created, not only to display the materials which the company offers, but to demonstrate the experience they can provide. Visitors will forget the busy outside world as they step inside this temple to high-quality construction. A BETTER WAY In order to forge ahead and experience growth, we need both inspiration and a solid base. This is why, we believe, our chosen Mediterranean home is so conducive to innovation. Yes, it may get hot for a period in July and August, necessitating a much slower pace, but even rest is proven to boost productivity. The Spanish habit of the siesta has long been maligned as lazy, but nothing could be further than the truth. Power napping is scientifically demonstrated to restore cognitive function, and notable companies such as Huffington Post and Uber actively encourage it during work hours. NASA is known for implementing ‘NASA Naps’ and Google, of course, has installed free-standing nap pods at its California headquarters. Fortune has a term for this new HR trend: ‘productive rest.’ So, Spain had it right after all. It’s just one example of how a saner culture that places an emphasis on wellbeing plus family and social connections fosters a healthier mindset, which in turn breeds ingenuity and a different way of working. Instead of working harder, the philosophy is to work smarter (our beloved restaurants, which go into overdrive during the summer months, may be the exception). We’ll see how long it takes Northern Europe and the US - which still see busy-ness as a mark of prestige - to catch up. Far from being counter-productive to success, living a slower life in Mallorca can indeed inspire a person – or whole team – to new heights. El hábito español de la siesta ha sido durante mucho tiempo tachado de perezoso, pero nada más lejos de la realidad. Está científicamente demostrado que una siesta reparadora restablece la función cognitiva, y compañías notables como Huffington Post y Uber la fomentan activamente durante las horas de trabajo. La NASA es conocida por sus "siestas de la NASA" y Google, por supuesto, ha instalado cabinas de siesta independientes en su sede de California. Fortune tiene un término para esta nueva tendencia de RRHH: "descanso productivo". Así que, después de todo, España siempre tuvo razón. En lugar de trabajar más, la filosofía es trabajar de forma más inteligente (nuestros queridos restaurantes, que trabajan a toda máquina durante los meses de verano, pueden ser la excepción). Veremos cuánto tardan en ponerse al día el norte de Europa y Estados Unidos, que siguen considerando la actividad como una marca de prestigio. Lejos de ser contraproducente para el éxito, vivir una vida más pausada en Mallorca puede, de hecho, inspirar a una persona -o a todo un equipo- a alcanzar nuevas metas. Fortune hat einen Begriff für diesen neuen HR-Trend: ,,produktive Ruhe". Spanien hatte also die ganze Zeit über Recht. Das ist nur ein Beispiel dafür, wie eine gesündere Kultur, in der das Wohlbefinden sowie familiäre und soziale Bindungen im Vordergrund stehen, eine gesündere Denkweise fördert, die wiederum Erfindungsreichtum und eine andere Art zu arbeiten hervorbringt. Anstatt härter zu arbeiten, lautet die Philosophie, intelligenter zu arbeiten (unsere geliebten Restaurants, die in den Sommermonaten auf Hochtouren laufen, bilden hier vielleicht eine Ausnahme). Wir werden sehen, wie lange es dauert, bis Nordeuropa und die USA - wo Geschäftigkeit immer noch als Zeichen von Prestige gilt - aufholen. Ein langsameres Leben auf Mallorca ist keineswegs kontraproduktiv für den Erfolg, sondern kann eine Person - oder ein ganzes Team - tatsächlich zu neuen Höhenflügen inspirieren.
