A CHANCE Once upon a time in a small town, a child was born to a carpenter father and his young bride. Life was tough for the family, and as the unemployed father suffered more and more of life's hardships and disappointments he turned to alcohol to soothe his troubled mind. For the little boy and his brothers, hunger was a frequent ache in their stomachs. Nights of anger and despair became the norm, until their concerned grandmother intervened and asked the state to help. The boy and his brothers were given a new home, a new beginning and some much needed love and kindness. The young boy flourished in this caring environment and the talents which could have been easily overlooked were nurtured and developed, and so he had the chance. The opportunity to be the best that he could be. To contribute to society. To make a difference in the world. To make us proud. His name is Joan Ávila Fuster and you can read his story on page 54. Every child deserves a chance and to know that they're cared for. EINE CHANCE Es war einmal ein Kind in einer kleinen Stadt geboren, als Sohn eines Zimmermanns und dessen junger Braut. Das Leben war entbehrungsreich für die Familie und als der Vater immer tiefer in den Strudel von Problemen und Enttäuschungen geriet, begann er, seine Sorgen in Alkohol zu ertränken. Für den kleinen Jungen und seine Brüder wurde Hunger immer mehr zu einem alltäglichen Gefühl im Magen. Nächte voller Wut und Verzweiflung waren die Regel, bis die besorgte Großmutter schließlich eingriff und den Staat um Hilfe bat. Der Junge und seine Brüder bekamen ein neues Zuhause, einen Neuanfang und lang vermisste Liebe und Zuwendung. Der Knabe blühte in diesem behüteten Umfeld auf. Dort konnte er seine Talente, die sonst leicht übersehen worden wären, fördern und entwickeln – plötzlich hatte er eine Chance. Er bekam die Möglichkeit, das Beste aus sich herauszuholen, einen Beitrag zur Gesellschaft zu leisten, die Welt ein bisschen besser und uns dadurch stolz zu machen. Sein Name ist Joan Àvila Fuster. Auf den Seiten 54-59 können Sie seine Geschichte nachlesen. Jedes Kind verdient eine Chance und die Gewissheit, dass wir helfen, wenn es nötig ist. CHRISTMAS MARKET December 6, 7 and 8 & 12, 13 and 14 Hot wine punch, original German bratwurst and romantic brass music: at the 5th Pueblo Español Christmas market, visitors will feel as though they're in Nuremberg or Salzburg. Thanks to this celebration, residents from German-speaking countries feel a little closer to home. Last year, the market attracted some 7,000 visitors. This Christmas there are around 30 stalls selling Christmas articles of all kind: decorations, presents, books, natural soaps, candles, glass, jewellery and, for sure, lots of culinary delicacies. Dampfender Glühwein und Bratwürstchen wie in Nürnberg oder Salzburg: Der jährliche Weihnachtsmarkt im Pueblo Español ist nach vier Jahren Erfahrung eine feste Institution auf der Insel. Dank ihm fühlen sich besonders Residenten aus deutschsprachigen Ländern nicht so weit weg von Zuhause. Letztes Jahr kamen 7,000 Besucher. Diesmal gibt es 30 Verkaufsstände aller Art zu bestaunen: Deko, Weihnachtsgeschenke, Bücher, Naturseife, Kerzen, Glas, Schmuck, Mode und natürlich allerhand Kulinarisches. THE THREE KINGS (“REYES MAGOS”) PARADE SPANISH CHRISTMAS HIGHLIGHT January, 5. Spanish children get their Christmas presents not on December, 24, but on the morning of Epiphany, January, 6. The evening before - January 5 - all Spanish cities are crammed with people for the “Reyes Magos” parade, the “Cabalgata”. The oriental Magis arrive in Palma by ship and then take a ride on decorated camels throughout the city. Joining it is a spectacular experience of unique Spanish culture. Die Heiligen drei Könige, Reyes Magos, kommen am 5. Januar mit dem Schiff in vielen Orten der Insel an. Äusserst sehenswert ist der Festzug in Palma. Die Reyes Magos ziehen vollgeladen mit Päckchen, die die Eltern vorher für ihre Kinder abgegeben haben, vom Hafen zum Rathaus und durch die Altstadt. Früher bekamen die mallorquinischen Kinder am Morgen des 6. Januar ihre Geschenke. Heute schreiben sie ihre Wunschzettel sowohl an die Könige als auch an den Weihnachtsmann sicher ist sicher.

Until December, 11. Fundación Sophia, with the support of the US Embassy in Madrid, is showcasing in Palma a collection of prints by renowned photographer Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952), whose extensive documentation of indigenous tribal life in the United States and Canada produced compelling pictures that continue to shape popular perceptions about the Western frontier. HARD ROCK CAFÉ COMES TO PALMA Palma will get a new insignia of a metropolitan city: Legendary restaurant chain “Hard Rock Café”, situated in almost every capital city in Europe, opens a branch at Paseo Marítimo, near the Cappuccino Café . The inauguration is scheduled for the beginning of December 2008. The Hard Rock Café follows the “Vips” bar, located in the property before. Palma kann sich in Zukunft noch mehr als Metropole fühlen: Die legendäre Restaurant-Kette “Hard Rock Café”, die in fast allen Hauptstädten Europas vertreten ist, eröffnet Anfang Dezember 2008 eine Dependece in Palma, genauer gesagt am Paseo Marítimo neben dem Café Cappuccino. Vorher war dort das Lokal “Vips” beheimatet.

Woody Allen and The Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band (the band that performs every Monday in New York's Carlyle Café) will be at the Palma Arena on the first day of the new year. SWEDISH HELLO AUSTRIAN GOODBYE D D orothea Waydsch takes two substantial pieces of Iberian pork and, in the morning, places them in a thyme and rosemary marinade. After marinating them for at least six hours, she rolls the heart-shaped dark red pieces of pork shoulder in grated almonds, before browning them in a pan on the hob. A splendid aroma begins to waft through the open kitchen. The temperature is not too high, so as not to burn the coating which should only be golden. The hearty pieces of meat are still uncooked inside, so they're quickly placed in a roasting pan and put in the oven to finish cooking. “The meat shouldn't end up well done, just medium pink and soft,” says the distinctive chef firmly. After 15 minutes of baking at 180 degrees Celsius, the meat is taken out of the oven and wrapped in aluminium foil - to rest without completely cooling. Then it´s put into the oven once more, shortly before serving - ready. Pork shoulder fillets are the main course of a very different Christmas dinner arranged by

Sie wälzt die herzförmigen, dunkelroten Schulterstücke in einer zarten Panade aus gerösteten Mandeln und gemörsten Pfeffer- und Korianderkörnern und brät sie in der Pfanne an. Dabei durchzieht ein herrlicher Duft die offene Küche. Das Öl in der Pfanne darf nicht zu heiß sein, so dass die Panade nicht verbrennt und die Schulterstücke goldgelb und appetitlich geröstet sind. Weil das Fleisch innen noch roh ist, kommt es nach dem Anbraten schnell auf einen Ofenrost, um im Rohr zu garen, „nicht ganz durch, sondern zart rose soll es nachher sein“, merkt die Köchin mit Bestimmtheit an. Nach ca. 20 Minuten Garzeit bei ca. 180 Grad wird das Fleisch aus dem Ofen genommen und zum Ruhen in Alufolie gewickelt - ohne kalt zu werden - und kommt dann noch einmal kurz vom dem Anrichten in den Ofen. The official first course is Papaya salad, followed by Ravioli filled with Spanish chorizo and chickpeas. After that the pork shoulder slices are served with braised vegetables. Finally, curd cheese balls covered with sweet almond flakes and tangerine pieces complete this dinner. Imagine a Christmas dinner without turkey, duck, goose or venison - can this work? “It certainly can,” Dorothea replies. The German gastronomy specialist loves to surprise her guests with experimental dishes, often a culinary crossover of several different food cultures, to stimulate the taste buds. Her gourmet journey starts in Sweden, then jumps over to Italy, reaches a Spanish crest and waves goodbye to Austria. Perhaps this unexpected mix of dishes comes from Dorothea´s international experience and business situation. The German woman, who comes from Munich, uses the island as a hub for her gastronomic services. Her formula is composed of individuality, exclusivity, discreetness plus outstanding quality of both service and ingredients. The guiding professional principle of the tall, slender lady chef is convincing simplicity. Two celebrity chefs know very well how brilliant she is: firstly, Alfons Schuhbeck, Bavaria´s local cuisine hero, with whom Dorothea underwent her apprenticeship in Waging am See, and, second, Austrian Eckart Witzigmann, who placed Dorothea in a job in Mallorca eight years ago. Thus, Dorothea is believed to be the only bookable home-chef on the island offering food on a Michelin star level. indulgence tours for demanding gourmets. Before every new job, Dorothea makes a home inspection to get an idea of the rooms where the party or the business meeting is taking place. She listens to the clients´ culinary requests and comes up with an individual food and decoration concept for the event. Accessories, crockery and cutlery are usually supplied by Flavourhouse. After the meal Dorothea and her assistant tidy up everything and take the used dishes and cooking utensils with them. Flavourhouse also does the shopping for all the ingredients. For the Christmas decoration in abcMallorca´s model house, Dorothea chose the colour orange, because “it´s festive and resembles gold”. The table is laid festively and stylishly without seeming overdone. The night lights of Palma are shimmering through the transparent glass wall, providing a romantic Christmas atmosphere. Even the

first course with its orange papaya flesh fits in with the colour scheme. But first, a few words about the appetizer “Swedish mouthful”, this evening´s only tapa. Dorothea loves Swedish cuisine, not just because her business collaborator Chris is a Swede. Her bite-sized “Swedish compliment” accompanying the Champagne is an long bowl filled with sweet potato slices, cubes of salted herring, red onion and chopped egg white and egg yolk, in warm nut butter. It´s a tasty dainty and it's impossible to resist dipping some baguette bread into the dish to soak up the last drop of dressing. After the appetizer the guests move towards the beautifully decorated Christmas table. In the meantime, Dorothea stays in the kitchen and prepares every course fresh and as required. Course number one arrives. Papaya is the only fruit “you cut open and find fresh caviar

Sie dekoriert das Esszimmer mit eigenen Accessoires, wählt Teller und Besteck aus ihrem Fundus und packt danach alles ins Auto. Sämtliche Einkäufe erledigt „Flavourhouse“ ebenso. Für die Weihnachtsdekoration im Musterhaus von AbcMallorca hat sich Dorothea die Farbe Orange gewählt, „weil sie etwas Festliches hat und Gold ähnelt“. Der Tisch ist stilvoll und festlich dekoriert, wirkt aber angenehm unaufgeregt. Durch die transparente Glaswand dringt das Lichtermeer Palmas ins Esszimmer und sorgt für stimmungsvolle vorweihnachtliche Atmosphäre. Orange ist auch das Fruchtfleisch der Papaya, dessen Salat den ersten Gang bildet. Davor noch ein Wort zum Appetizer „Schwedenhappen“, der einzigen Tapa des Abends. Dorothea liebt die schwedische Küche, nicht nur, weil ihr Kompagnon Chris Schwede ist. Ihr mundgerechter „schwedischer Gruß“ zum Champagner ist eine lange Schale mit geschnittenen Süßkartoffeln, gemischt mit Stückchen vom Matjes-Hering, roter Zwiebel und klein gehacktem Eiweiß und Eigelb in lauwarmer Nussbutter. Ein saftiger Leckerbissen, bei dem man nicht umhin kann, mit BaguetteBrot-Tunken die Schale ganz leer zu machen. Nach dem Appetitanreger begibt sich die Gesellschaft an den weihnachtlich dekorierten Tisch. Gleichzeitig bleibt Dorothea in der Küche und bereitet jeden Gang einzeln frisch zu. Die Papaya ist die einzige Frucht, „die man aufschneidet und darin frischen „Kaviar“ findet“, meint Dorothea. Und wirklich: Die Kerne sehen besser aus als echter Kaviar. Für den exotischen Salat schneidet sie das PapayaFruchtfleisch in Stückchen und mariniert diese mit einem Tomatendressing. Eine Marinade aus frisch gepresstem Orangensaft und frisch gebratene, lauwarme Calamares-Ringe werden darüber gegeben. Der zweite Gang folgt rasch hinterher: hausgemachte Ravioli, gefüllt mit spanischer Chorizo. Als Beilage dienen Kichererbsen, geröstet und aromatisiert mit Curry und anderen arabischen Gewürzen und Süßkartoffelfond. Es ist eine herrliche Kombination, bei der man von der ChorizoSalami, die roh sehr faserig sein kann, nur den würzigen Geschmack wahrnimmt. „Schwein gehabt“ heißt es nach dem dritten Gang - dem Höhepunkt des AbcMallorcaWeihnachtsmahles. As side dishes, roasted and curry flavoured chickpeas are served on a sweet potato base. It´s a fabulous combination, of which one notices only the spicy taste of the Chorizo sausage - a product that can be very chewy when served uncooked. Pork is the star of the third course - the peak of the abcMallorca Christmas dinner. The fine slices, decoratively arranged with braised vegetables, possess intense taste and colour. One could almost think it was fillet of beef. The Austrian farewell dessert melts in the mouth. The shell of almond and cinnamon crumbs dominates the flavour due to the light and airy consistency of the curd cheese dumplings. There's a hint of the fine nut butter Dorothea used in the gentle roasting. Fresh slices of tangerine provide a light sweet and sour overall aroma. He was born in Sheffield in 1948, and was ordained into the ministry at the age of 23. During a varied and interesting career, Robert was - among other things - the press officer for the Diocese of Lichfield in the English Midlands, and was a BBC radio and television producer/director for religious programming during the 1970s. He is married to Caroline, and they have two sons and a daughter.

If you didn't know Robert Ellis was a priest, you probably wouldn't guess his profession correctly. He is tall - rangy even - with a shock of greying hair that would have been blond not that long ago. He looks to me as though he could be a university lecturer whom his students would respect and engage with. That's it - a liberal-minded lecturer who would provoke his students to think about their responsibilities to society. The fact that Robert hardly ever wears his dog collar unless he is on duty, adds to this slightly Bohemian image. It also helps that he looks at least five years younger than his 60 years. Over a coffee at a small café in Camp de Mar, I ask him about Christmas: did he feel that it had become grossly over-commercialized? “Not here. I like the fact that Christmas only starts properly about the 15th December. Frankly I don't really have that much time for the clergy who whinge about this sort of thing - Christmas is about families getting together.” That answer surprised me a little; I was expecting the usual po-faced lecture about the lost message of Christ's birth amongst a welter of crude consumerism. I wondered if Christmastide was a very busy time for him. “To be honest, it's quite a strange time really, as many people go home to the UK for Christmas. Naturally I have to do my full stint of five or more services but many of them are very quiet indeed. I remember driving from Cala d'Or to Palma one Christmas Eve and not seeing a single soul on the road all my way to the Church in Palma. In fact, my wife Caroline goes back to the UK just before Christmas and I follow her on Boxing Day.” With his journalistic background, Robert Ellis is a very good writer; he has a regular column in the English language newspaper the Majorca Daily Bulletin, and his pieces are pungent, amusing, and not without controversy. Not for him the bland assurances and tired rhetoric ofyour average Church newsletter. He writes about subjects such as racism, and homosexuality in the Church - “homophobia wrapped in bad theology” - with a passion. “It's like the debate about women priests: our children can't believe this sort of thing is even an issue nowadays.” His only daughter is married to a Muslim, and so has witnessed anti-Islamic feeling firsthand. He has a healthy disrespect for religious fundamentalism of any stripe: “There is no nut, like a religious nut.” I wondered if that was just the point, fundamentalism has a certainty that eludes the Church of England. “I'm in this job to change the Church, dragging it kicking and screaming into the 21st century: we need to

Wenn jemand nicht vorher weiß, dass Robert Ellis Priester ist, würde er seinen Beruf wohl kaum erraten. Der Geistliche ist ein ausgesprochen großgewachsener Mann mit einem kräftigen grauen Haarschopf, der vor nicht allzuvielen Jahren noch strohblond gewesen sein muss. Für mich sieht er aus wie ein Uni-Dozent, den seine Studenten respektieren und der sie in seinen Bann zieht. Ja, Robert könnte ein liberal gesonnener Dozent sein, der seine Studenten im Hörsaal dazu anleitet, über ihre Verantwortung gegenüber der Gesellschaft nachzudenken. Die Tatsache, dass er den steifen PriesterKragen eigentlich nur trägt, wenn er Gottesdienste hält, begünstigt sein latentes Bohemien-Image. Außerdem sieht er mindestens fünf Jahre jünger aus als die 60 Sommer, die er tatsächlich zählt. Wir treffen uns auf eine Tasse Kaffee in einer kleinen Bar in Camp de Mar und ich frage ihn, was er von Weihnachten hält: Ob er nicht auch glaubt, dass dieses Fest furchtbar überkommerzialisiert ist? “Hier nicht”, entgegnet er trocken. “Mir ist es sehr recht, dass Weihnachten erst ab dem 15. Dezember so richtig losgeht. Offen gesagt, habe ich für

die Art von Geistlichkeit, die sich so sehr über die Kommerzialisierung mokiert, nicht viel übrig - Weihnachten heißt doch vor allem, dass die Familien wieder einmal zusammen kommen.” Diese Antwort überrascht mich ein bisschen; ich hatte die übliche Wutpredigt erwartet, über die verlorene Kernbotschaft von Christi Geburt in Mitten eines Wustes von rohem Konsumismus. Sicherlich habe er an Weihnachten jede Menge zu tun, versuche ich einen anderen Ansatz. “Um ehrlich zu sein, ist das eine seltsame Zeit auf der Insel, weil die meisten Leute Weihnachten in Großbritannien verbringen. Klar muss ich anlässlich des Hochfestes meine fünf bis sechs Messen halten, aber in der Kirche geht es dabei meistens sehr ruhig zu. Einmal bin ich am Heiligen Abend von Cala d´Or nach Palma gefahren und habe auf dem ganzen Weg bis zur Kirche in der Innenstadt nicht eine Seele auf der Straße gesehen. Gewöhnlich reist meine Frau Caroline einige Tage vor Weihnachten ins Vereinigte Königreich und ich fliege am zweiten Weihnachtsfeiertag hinterher”, gibt er mir zu Protokoll.

Dank seiner journalistischen Erfahrung ist Robert Ellis ein patenter Redakteur; für die britische Insel-Zeitung “Majorca Daily Bulletin” schreibt er regelmäßig eine Kolumne. Die Texte sind oft bissig formuliert, vor allem aber humorvoll und inhaltlich durchaus kontrovers. Die üblichen faden Beteuerungen in der ermüdenden Sprache des gewöhnlichen Kirchenblattes sind seine Sache nicht. Über Themen wie Rassismus und Homosexualität in der Kirche - er nennt es “in mangelhafter Theologie verpackte Homophobie” schreibt Robert leidenschaftlich gern: “Das ist so wie die Diskussion um weibliche Priester: Unsere Kinder können doch gar nicht glauben, dass solche Dinge heutzutage noch Diskussionsgegenstand sind.” Seine einzige Tochter ist mit einem Moslem verheiratet and erfuhr daher islamfeindliche Gesinnungen am eigenen Leib. Hinsichtlich religiösem Fanatismus jeder Couleur hegt Robert eine gesunde Abneigung: “Die religiös Verrückten sind die Verrücktesten.” Darum geht es ihm also: Der Fundamentalismus beansprucht eine Gewissheit der Lehre, der die Kirche von

be relating to the hopes and fears of ordinary people.” Might this seem to some that the Church is prone to each passing modern fad or fancy? “No certainly not, it's just that we have a duty to speak out about the environment, education, health and wealth. If we don't we will go the way of the dinosaurs and just die out.” Now that intrigued me. Is it possible to be a Christian and still believe that Charles Darwin was right, in terms of The Origin Of The Species? The Reverend Ellis gave me a withering look: “Yes of course it is, God is God, Darwin was right, but acknowledging evolution does not mean that you are denying God - far from it.” As we talked, Robert spoke of the various groups of people on the island who would be not having a very merry Christmas. Among them, more than thirty young British men in jail on Mallorca. Robert Ellis visits these men regularly as part of his pastoral work, and they will not have much comfort over the holidays. Should we feel sorry for them? I asked. “Look, all these men are in there for drugs-related crimes, most of them have just been stupid . . . ” A subject that exercises Ellis considerably, is that of loneliness and genteel poverty here on Mallorca. The fact is that many couples come to the island to retire on a fixed pension and, when one of the couple dies, there can be desperate problems for the remaining partner. They cannot afford to live here, and probably have a shrinking circle of friends. Going back to the UK isn't an option because perhaps family ties have been severed. Robert spoke movingly of this hidden and discreet poverty that is very rarely spoken of, yet shames us all. With Christmas rapidly approaching, we talked about this very special time of year. As a family man, Robert understands the particular magic it engenders for children. “Christmas is a time for families, it is a wonderful festival. After all, we can all relate to babies and a new birth.” Interestingly, Robert hadn't yet mentioned the birth of Jesus. Do you believe in the Virgin birth? We looked at each other - he knew what I was thinking. He chose his words very carefully: “Put it this way, I believe something quite dramatic happened at the first Christmas... ” Do you ever regret being a priest, Robert? “Frank”, he said quietly, “I had no choice in the matter.” With this he smiled at me and pointed skyward. Laughing now, the Reverend Robert Ellis leant across the table and whispered: “I hang on in there.”

DIE RELIGIÖS VERRÜCKTEN SIND DIE VERRÜCKTESTEN England ausweicht. “Ich fülle diese Rolle aus, um die Kirche zu verändern, um sie tretend und zeternd ins 21. Jahrhundert zu schleifen: Wir müssen wieder Zugang bekommen zu den Hoffnungen und Ängsten durchschnittlicher Menschen.” Aber ist das nicht Wasser auf die Mühlen derjenigen, die der Kirche vorwerfen, jeder vorübergehenden Modeerscheinung oder Laune des Zeitgeistes nachzugeben? “Nicht im Geringsten. Wir haben die Pflicht, uns hinsichtlich unserer Umwelt, zu Themen wie Erziehung, Gesundheit und Reichtum zu äußern. Wenn wir das nicht tun, werden wir aussterben wie die Dinosaurier.” Das macht mich jetzt neugierig. Ist es denn möglich, Christ zu sein und trotzdem zu glauben, dass Charles Darwin mit seiner Theorie der Entstehung der Arten Recht hatte? Pastor Ellis sieht mich mit leichter Entrüstung an und antwortet: “Natürlich ist das möglich. Gott ist Gott und Darwin hatte Recht. Man schwört nicht Gott ab, indem man die Evolutionstheorie anerkennt - ganz und gar nicht.” Während unseres Gesprächs erwähnt Robert immer wieder die Menschen auf der Insel, denen kein besonders glückliches Weihnachtsfest bevorsteht. Dazu gehören 30 junge britische Gefängnisinsassen auf Mallorca. Im Rahmen seines pastoralen Dienstes besucht Robert diese Männer regelmäßig und er weiß, dass sie keine gemütlichen Feiertage verleben werden. Ob sie uns denn leid tun sollen, frage ich Robert. “Sieh mal, viele von ihnen sind wegen irgendwelcher Drogendelikte hinein geraten, und die meisten von ihnen waren einfach nur schrecklich naiv….” Ein Thema, das Ellis sehr bewegt, ist die Vereinsamung und die “vornehme Armut” hier auf Mallorca. Viele Ehepaare kommen auf die Insel, um mit ihrer festen Rente im Rücken den Lebensabend im Süden zu verbringen. Sobald ein Partner stirbt, kann die Situation für den Witwer / die Witwe dramatische Ausmaße annehmen. Sie

können es sich kaum leisten, hier in Würde zu leben und der Freundeskreis wird stetig kleiner. Eine Rückkehr nach Großbritannien ist meistens ausgeschlossen, da familiäre Bande oft nicht oder kaum mehr bestehen. Robert spricht sehr eindringlich von dieser versteckten und diskreten Verarmung, die selten thematisiert wird, die uns aber alle beschämt. Weil das Weihnachtsfest nun doch rasch näher rückt, kommen wir noch einmal zum Thema der besonderen Jahreszeit zurück. Als Familienvater kann Robert den unvergleichlichen Zauber, den das Fest bei Kindern auslöst, gut verstehen: “Weihnachten ist die Zeit der Familien und deshalb ein wunderbares Ereignis. Wir alle können uns ja mit irgendwelchen Kleinkindern und Neugeborenen identifizieren.”

Da fällt mir auf, dass Robert die Geburt von Jesus Christus noch gar nicht erwähnt hat. Ob er an die jungfräuliche Geburt des Messias glaubt? Wir sehen uns einige Sekunden lang gespannt in die Augen - er scheint genau zu wissen, was ich mit der Frage bezwecke. Deshalb legt er sich seine Antwort sorgfältig zurecht: “Schreib einfach, dass ich glaube, dass in der ursprünglichen Weihnachtsnacht etwas Dramatisches passiert ist.” Hat es Robert jemals bereut, Priester geworden zu sein? “Frank”, sagt er ruhig, “in der Angelegenheit blieb mir keine andere Wahl.” Dabei lächelt er mich an und deutet mit dem Finger himmelwärts. Herzhaft lachend, beugt sich Reverend Robert Ellis über den Tisch nach vorne und flüstert: “Ich muss da drin einfach durchhalten.”

any of us in Mallorca tend to do our entertaining outdoors, during the warmer months. But at Christmas - the most important time to share with family and friends it's the home's interior that provides the backdrop for memorable festivities with loved ones. We might receive the gift of a little pleasant winter sunshine - perfect for a glass of cava on the terrace or balcony, or a post-lunch stroll - but there's nothing quite like returning indoors to the warmth and comfort of a beautifully decorated home at this time of year.

Visitors to this particular home in the glorious countryside close to the Tramuntana are in for a real treat this Christmas. The festive welcome begins at the entrance to the house, where each of the two large traditional metal-studded wooden doors has been dressed with an understated wreath. A small reindeer, fashioned from twigs, stands each side of the doorway, alongside traditional poinsettia nestling in old terracotta pots. Already, it's obvious that something magical awaits inside: a home that's been specially prepared for Christmas by designer Klas K채ll of Palma-based Rialto Living, using a selection of decorations he's brought from the store. The initial welcome for visitors is important, believes Klas: "It sets the scene for a warm festive occasion." The home's large square hall is where arriving guests will shed their coats - and the first thing they'll see is the beautifully decorated Christmas tree, surrounded by wrapped presents, which has

pride of place at the centre of the room. What better welcome? Klas chose a high quality artificial tree, because real ones can be rather poor here, and has dressed it in an understated way. It's dotted with tiny white lights, and hanging decorations include hearts, small candy-striped walking sticks and spotted toadstools - all made of felt - and white lambswool snowballs. The colour scheme he's chosen for this home is red, white and green - the traditional colours of Christmas: "Decide on a colour scheme and follow it throughout," advises Klas. The result is a cohesive and stylish look. He favours natural materials, such as wood, felt and wool, for decorative items: "I don't like to use anything too flashy or glittery. Good quality decorations in traditional materials will become favourites, brought out year after year." Nature makes a valuable contribution to Klas's scheme: he's used branches laden with red berries, pine cones, small white cyclamen plants and, of course, traditional

poinsettia, sourced from Klaus Reich of Cuatro Rosas. The budget-conscious might choose key decorative items from this renowned Palma florist and, in other parts of the home, use some of the bounty to be found in the garden or countryside. Fruits and spices make excellent - and fragrant - decorations. In the sitting room, where a log fire crackles in the hearth, oranges studded with cloves gently infuse the warm air with a spicy citrus fragrance. Oranges can also be hung from ribbons in front of windows, although here Klas has chosen some hanging gold stars, which will catch any winter sunlight. Red apples are also a perfect complement to his traditional Christmas colour scheme. And for an easy festive pot pourri, combine cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise and place in a warm room. A folded cosy blanket sits on several chairs and the sofas. Not only do these provide accents of festive colour, they also offer the promise of extra snuggly warmth.

iele von uns Mallorca-Residenten schwärmen so oft es geht ins Freie, auf der Suche nach Erholung und Vergnügen in den Sommermonaten. Aber an Weihnachten, der wichtigsten Zeit des Jahres für das Beisammensein mit Familie und Freunden, wird das Innenleben der Häuser zur zentralen Kulisse für denkwürdige Festtage. Hier auf der Insel mag uns auch im Winter der eine oder andere warme Tag mit Sonnenschein vergönnt sein, an dem man auf der Terrasse oder dem Balkon Cava schlürfen kann. Auch ein Verdauungsspaziergang ohne Vermummung ist hier sogar im Dezember noch möglich. Trotzdem geht nichts über das gemütliche Verschanzen in den eigenen, gut geheizten und stimmungsvoll dekorierten vier Wänden zu dieser Jahreszeit.

Wer auch immer unser besonderes ModellLandhaus am Fuß der Tramuntana besucht, wird Weihnachten in vollen Zügen genießen. Eine Auswahl besten DekoZubehörs aus seinem LuxusEinrichtungshaus wurde eigens angeliefert. Klas ist überzeugt davon, dass der erste Eindruck, den ein Besucher bekommt, vorentscheidend ist: „Dieses besondere, romantische Gefühl für einen festlichen Anlass sollte sich gleich zu Beginn einstellen.“ Der geräumige quadratische Hausflur ist die Ankunftszone der Gäste, in der man in Ruhe die Mäntel ablegen kann. Dabei schweifen die ersten Blicke bereits ins Innere und erfassen den Weihnachtsbaum als zentrales Element. Das Symbol des Hochfestes ist traumhaft schön geschmückt und von Bilderbuch-Geschenken umgeben. Der Baum thront als König in der Mitte des Raumes. Was für ein Willkommens-Gruß! Klas hat einen künstlichen Weihnachtsbaum aus hochwertigem Kunststoff ausgewählt, weil Natur-Nadelbäume auf der Insel oft armselig daher kommen. Der Baumschmuck

ist dezent bis humorvoll: Kleine weiße Elektro-Lämpchen stecken zwischen den Ästen und schnuckelige Figuren, wie Nikoläuse, Herzchen, Schneebälle, Zuckerstangen oder Fliegenpilze, hängen an den Spitzen. Alle Accessoires sind aus Filz gefertigt, oder aus weißer Schafswolle, im Fall der Schneebälle.

Decorative and functional, they'd make an excellent Christmas gift - particularly for an older person - on an island where draughts and dampness can make the temperature seem a lot chillier than the thermometer indicates. The dining table is the second most important decorative centrepiece - after the tree - as it's where time will be spent enjoying traditional festive dishes. Here, Klas has set red linen place mats directly onto the richlyhued wooden table, complemented by red crockery. Each place setting is decorated with a small wooden Christmas tree; there are nightlights in red glass holders, and small silver pots containing Swedish white moss. An elegant marble cheese or cake stand laden with cookies or sweets becomes a decoration in its own right. Christmas is a time to bring out and use any special treasures, such as beautiful crystal glasses, silverware and any family heirlooms that have graced the tables of previous generations. This, after all, is a time for nostalgia and fond memories. Even the dining chairs look festive: Klas has tied onto each one a small branch of pine, using ribbon attached to a small cardboard cut-out of a fir tree. As the final ribbon is tied, I wander through each room, admiring decorations from Nordic and other European countries, and influences from America. Klas K채ll's gorgeous festive scheme feels as cosmopolitan as this island, and Christmas with its message of peace and goodwill to all mankind - seems a highly appropriate time to embrace some of the traditions of other countries. bevorzugt generell Deko-Elemente aus Naturmaterialien wie Holz, Filz und Wolle: „Zu schrille und glitzernde Sachen verwende ich nicht so gerne. Qualitativ hochwertigen, traditionellen Objekten, die man jedes Jahr wieder verwenden kann, gehört die Zukunft.“ Die Natur leistet einen nicht unerheblichen Beitrag zu Klas´ Szenerie: Er verwendet Äste voller roter Beeren, Kiefernzapfen, kleine Zyklamenpflänzchen und natürlich traditionelle Weihnachtssterne, die aus Klaus Reichs Blumenladen „Cuatro Rosas“ stammen. Wer akkurat auf seinen Geldbeutel

achtet, wird sich wohl nur einige zentrale Accessoires von diesem angesagten Floristen aus Palma besorgen und den Rest in Wald und Garten zusammensuchen. Feldfrüchte und Gewürze sind tolle - und dazu wohlriechende - Verzierungen. In der Wohnstube knistert wohlig ein Kaminfeuer. Würziger Duft von mit Gewürznelken besetzten Orangen füllt die warme Raumluft. Die Orangen kann man an Bändern vors Fenster hängen, obwohl Klas sich hier für goldene Sterne entschieden hat, um das knappe Sonnenlicht im Winter einzufangen.

Rote Äpfel sind ebenfalls eine tolle Option, um diese traditionelle Weihnachts-Szenerie zu bereichern. Zimtstangen, Nelken und Sternanis ergeben ein leicht zu erstellendes Potpourri der Düfte in geheizten Räumen. Auf mehreren Stühlen und Sofas sind gefaltete Decken ausgelegt. Dies hat nicht nur mit einer weiteren festlichen Farbgebung etwas zu tun, sondern die Textilien versprechen nebenbei einen Tick mehr Kuschel-Atmosphäre. Dekorativ und funktional: damit wären die Decken ein ideales Weihnachtsgeschenk gerade für ältere Menschen - weil man ja wegen Zugluft und Feuchtigkeit oft das Gefühl hat, dass es deutlich kälter ist als der Wert, den das Thermometer anzeigt. Der Esstisch ist der zweitwichtigste Dekorations-Blickfang des Raumes nach dem Baum - schließlich wird die Gesellschaft ja genau dort Platz nehmen, um köstliche Weihnachts-Leckereien zu verspeisen, und viel Zeit mit Gesprächen verbringen. Klas hat direkt auf der Naturholzplatte des Tisches rot linierte Matten und rotes Geschirr ausgelegt. Jeder Sitzplatz ist mit einem kleinen hölzernen Weihnachtsbaum dekoriert; Teelichter in roten Gläsern erleuchten den Tisch festlich. Daneben stehen kleine silberne Gefäße mit weißem, schwedischem Moos. Ein eleganter Käse- oder Kuchen-Ständer, voll beladen mit Lebkuchen und Süßigkeiten, ist selbst Teil der Dekoration. Die TischBeleuchtung glänzt mit vielen Kerzen, die alle in einem schmucken Ring befestigt sind. An Weihnachten holt man gewöhnlich alle möglichen Schätze und Verzierungen hervor, wie z.B. Kristallgläser, das Tafelsilber und ein paar Familienerbstücke, die schon den Tisch vergangener Generationen verschönert haben. Es ist die Zeit der Besinnlichkeit und zärtlicher Erinnerungen. Sogar die Stühle am Esstisch sehen festlich aus: Klas hat an jedem von ihnen einen Kiefernzweig mit einem Band angebracht, an dem ein kleines Kartonbildchen eines Tannenbaums klebt. Sobald die letzte Schnur festgezurrt ist, durchschlendere ich jeden Raum noch einmal in aller Ruhe und bewundere diese herrlichen skandinavischen Dekorationen mit Einflüssen aus anderen europäischen Ländern sowie den USA. Klas Källs farbenprächtiges Festtags-Modell fühlt sich so kosmopolitisch an wie die Insel selbst, und Weihnachten - mit seiner Frohbotschaft vom Frieden auf Erden und allen Menschen ein Wohlgefallen - ist wohl genau der richtige Anlass dafür, einige Traditionen anderer Länder mit einzubeziehen. ntil his critically-ill father passed away in 2006, Joan Ávila Fuster used to visit him in his parents' apartment, and he keeps in close touch with his mother. It´s the same as in “any normal family”, Joan explains. At the end of the 80s, it might have seemed that the family's living conditions were almost too “normal” for Joan and his three younger brothers to be sent to a children's home.

However, it was the boys' grandmother whose action lead to the decision to do so. She had been observing the precarious situation of the Fuster sons in a poor household for a long time. They seemed to have no future. Their unemployed father was addicted to alcohol: negligence and violence were the methods he used to “educate” his sons. Today, Joan (28) is a Mallorcan celebrity. As one of the rising stars among the island's young artists he receives

is zu dessen Tod im Jahr 2006 besuchte Joan Ávila Fuster seinen schwer kranken Vater in der elterlichen Wohnung und pflegt bis heute intensiven Kontakt zu seiner Mutter. Es gehe bei ihnen eben “eigentlich wie in allen Familien zu”, erklärt Joan. Fast zu “normal” waren die Verhältnisse der Familiengemeinschaft damals, Ende der 80er Jahre, um die vier Jungs aus dem Hause Fuster in ein Erziehungsheim zu verfrachten.

Durchgesetzt hat es schließlich doch die Großmutter, die mit ansehen musste, wie schwer es ihre Enkel in einem verarmten Haushalt in Palma hatten. Ihnen schien die Zukunft verwehrt. Ein arbeitsloser Vater wendete in seiner Alkoholsucht die Erziehungsmethoden Vernachlässigung und Gewalt an. Joan (28), der älteste der vier Fuster-Brüder, ist heute ein Star. Als einer von Mallorcas aufstrebenden jungen Künstlern

commissions from important people and works under a business agreement with reputable galleries. He says he owes the children's home everything: “I was fine there. Many friends attending regular schools observed our new life with envy. Negligence and neediness were a way of life for many families. In contrast, we were well supplied and had an excellent educative perspective.” The home where Joan and his brothers were placed was called “Llar de Son Espanyolet”, named after a district of Palma. It has since been replaced by a new haven in a huge, modern building. All the homes of the institution “Llar de infáncia” - children's homes in English - are run by “IMAS”, the social welfare department of the Consell (island council). Public educator Margarita “Marga” Balaguer accompanied Joan, Toni, Jesús and Miguel from the very beginning. She became a kind of mother substitute. Today, Marga - who is even exactly the same age as the boys' real mother - still works at the “Llar”. Furthermore she´s one of the charter members of the Allen Graham Foundation for Disadvantaged and Abused Children, which was formally established a couple of years ago in recognition of the work of The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz” (featured in the June issue of abcMallorca) - an organization supporting the island's children's homes by providing useful goods. Marga believes that having been attended to by “the same group of teachers from the beginning” helped a lot to create an environment of trust and continuity for the boys. The sympathetic Mallorcan woman continues to keep in touch with all the four Fuster brothers, although they are fully fledged now. Marga: “We had a close relationship with them. Joan is an excellent, intelligent boy whom one takes to one´s heart immediately. Daily contact with him is easy.” The great success of his external education is a professional stimulus for her. She knows that it would be unlikely that these boys would have been committed to an institution nowadays: “There are many more possibilities of aid and sponsorship than before.” But the boys´ family environment then had been “enduringly disordered”. Their father was unable to work because of chronic illness resulting from his alcohol addiction. Almost constantly drunk, he tended to behave violently towards the children. The mother “at some point surrendered to the chronically critical situation.” Joan decided to stay one more year in the “Llar” after having finished his regular education there - firstly, because he liked it a lot and, second, because he planned to

Viele Freunde, die in öffentliche Schulen gingen, blickten neidisch zu uns auf. Vernachlässigung und Armut waren damals in vielen Familien an der Tagesordnung. Wir dagegen wurden versorgt und hatten tolle Ausbildungsmöglichkeiten.” Das Heim, in dem Joan und seine Brüder untergebracht waren, hieß “Llar de Son Espanyolet”, benannt nach einem Stadtviertel Palmas. Es wurde mittlerweile durch ein modernes Zufluchts-Zentrum in einem größeren Gebäude ersetzt. Die Häuser der Institution „Llar de la infáncia“ - zu Deutsch JugendWohnheim - werden von “IMAS”, dem Sozialhilfe-Institut des Inselrats, betrieben. Von Anfang an dabei war Erzieherin Margarita “Marga” Balaguer, die zu einer Art Ersatzmutter für Joan, Toni, Jesús und Miguel wurde. Marga ist heute mit 48 Jahren sogar exakt genauso alt wie die leibliche Mutter der Fuster-Jungen. Sie ist nebenbei eine der Gründerinnen der Stiftung “Alan Graham Charity 4 Kids”, die örtlichen Jugendheimen nahe steht. Ein großer Vorteil der Fusters sei gewesen, dass sie “von Anfang an das gleiche Betreuerteam hatten, ein Umfeld des Vertrauens und der Kontinuität erlebten”. Die sympathische Mallorquinerin Marga pflegt heute noch einen engen Kontakt zu allen vieren, obwohl sie längst flügge geworden sind. Marga: “Vor allem Joan ist ein toller, intelligenter Junge, den man automatisch ins Herz schließt. Der Umgang mit ihm ist angenehm und unkompliziert.” Sein Erfolg ist für sie ein beruflicher Ansporn. Heute würden die Fuster-Brüder kaum mehr in ein Heim kommen, wie sie weiß: “Es gibt viel differenziertere Fördermöglichkeiten als damals.“ Dennoch sei die familiäre Situation der Jungens „ohne Aussicht auf Besserung“ gewesen. Der Vater war wegen seiner Alkoholabhängigkeit berufsunfähig und neigte zu Gewalt gegenüber seinen Söhnen. Die Mutter habe „sich irgendwann in dieser chronischen Krisen-Situation aufgegeben“. Jedenfalls blieb Joan länger als ursprünglich geplant - weil es ihm so gut gefiel im „Llar“ und weil er eine Ausbildung zum GrafikDesigner machen wollte. Alan Grahams „Charity 4 Kidz“ spendierte einen Computer, den Joan noch heute benutzt, und 1998 Joan wurde an Palmas Kunstakademie „Escola d´Arte“ angemeldet. Dort schloss er mit dem Bachelor ab, lernte Bildhauerei, Malerei und Skizzieren kennen. Bei der Malerei blieb er. Danach ging er für acht Jahre nach Barcelona, mietete sich ein Atelier und studierte noch zwei Jahre Kunst. Seit seiner ersten

undergo an apprenticeship for graphic design. The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz provided him with a computer, which Joan still uses today. In 1998, Joan began two years of intensive study at Palma´s art academy “Escola d´Arte”, learning sculpture, painting and sketching. Finally, he successfully graduated with a Bachelor degree. He wanted to become a real painter - painting was his favourite form of art - and for that reason moved to Barcelona, where he added two more years of study. Since his first exhibition of paintings in 2003 he has been able to make a living from his art. Joan creates broad, striking pictures on wood with acrylic and resin paint. At some point in the past he radically changed his style: after drawing realistic pencil and ink sketches of day to day scenes he observed, he increasingly applied abstract, figurative and informal illustration techniques. The result of this evolution can be described as a mix of Graffiti-style and Lettristique. Joan pays high attention to the elaboration of the drawing surface. He´s already celebrated as a real master craftsman on the island, without exhibiting any awards to his name: “I usually don´t take part in painting competitions, because that´s not important for me.” He doesn´t need to hide his CV, however. It includes Joan being commissioned to decorate the interiors of some of the local Barceló hotels with his paintings. At the moment he´s working on special graphics for Balearic prime minister Francesc Antich. Joan Fuster´s works of art are constantly exhibited in the galleries Fran Reus (Calle Concepción, Palma, www.galeriafranreus.com) and Addaya (Alaró, www.addaya-art.com). “I've been represented there for five years. Thanks to a business agreement with the gallery keepers I can rely on a fixed salary.” Local institutions like the Balearic Government, the island's council and several politicians choose to buy his paintings. In addition, he founded the working partnership “81” with painter Pepito Morán from Córdoba. Recently “81” presented images and video clips in Cologne (Germany). Joan has two painting studios, one in Porreres (Mallorca) and one in Barcelona. What eventually happened to his brothers? “The contact between us is very close,” Joan says. Toni, the second oldest brother, is also a painter - he decorates walls. Jesús, the third, had been working for local nongovernmental organisations Mar Viva and Oceana, but a short while ago resumed studying. Miguel, the youngest of the family, lives in Barcelona like Joan, working there in gastronomy. All of them have made something of themselves: Marga can be proud of herself.

VERNACHLÄSSIGUNG UND ARMUT WAREN DAMALS IN VIELEN FAMILIEN AN DER TAGESORDNUNG Ausstellung 2003 kann er von den Bildern leben, die er malt. Joan malt große, plakative Bilder mit den Materialien Kunstharz, Acryl, Holz (-rahmen). Der Stil hat sich irgendwann einmal radikal geändert. Nachdem Joan anfangs Federzeichnungen und Bleistiftskizzen von alltäglich beobachteten Situationen erstellte, wendete er sich mehr und mehr abstrakten, figurativen und informellen Illustrations-Techniken zu. Man könnte das Ergebnis als Gemisch aus Graffitti-Style und Lettristik bezeichnen. Auf die Ausarbeitung des Malgrundes legt er großen Wert. Joan ist darin bereits ein anerkannter Meister, auch wenn er keinen Siegespreis bei einem Malwettbewerb vorweisen kann: „An solchen Wettbewerben nehme ich so gut wie nie teil, weil mir das nicht wichtig ist.“ Am Lebenslauf fehlt es indes nicht. Joan durfte bereits einige Hotels der Barceló-Gruppe mit seinen Bildern dekorieren und ist aktuell mit der Erstellung spezieller Grafiken für den Ministerpräsident der Balearen, Francesc Antich, beauftragt. Joans Werke sind durchgängig in den Galerien Fran Reus (Calle Cencepción, Palma, www.galeriafranreus.com) und Addaya (Alaró, www.addaya-art.com ) ausgestellt. Joan: „Dort bin ich seit fünf Jahren präsent. Eine Geschäftsvereinbarung mit den Galerien sichert mir ein festes Einkommen. Lokale Institutionen wie Landesregierung der Balearen, Inselrat und einheimische Politiker kaufen bevorzugt seine Bilder. Außerdem bildet Joan mit dem Malerkollegen Pepito Morán aus Córdoba die Arbeitsgemeinschaft „81“. Zuletzt präsentierten die beiden in Köln Bilder und Videoclips. Joan besitzt als Maler ein Atelier in Barcelona und eins in Porreres (Mallorca). Und was ist aus seinen Brüdern geworden? „Der Kontakt zwischen uns ist sehr eng“, sagt Joan. Einer seiner Brüder lebt in Barcelona, zwei sind auf Mallorca geblieben. Toni Fuster ist ebenfalls Maler - er verschönert Gebäudewände. Jesús (24), der drittjüngste, arbeitete bis vor kurzem im Bereich Artenschutz für die lokalen NGOs Mar Viva und Oceana. Heute studiert er wieder. Nesthäkchen Miguel lebt in Barcelona und arbeitet dort in der Gastronomie-Branche. Alle haben es zu etwas gebracht und keiner ist abgestürzt. Marga kann wirklich stolz auf sich sein.

t’s Christmas time and one shouldn’t be unduly glum. So despite the fact that the western world is sliding inexorably into a recession fuelled by the collapse of global banking, here’s one crumb of seasonal cheer – the stock market is so shot-to-pieces that even property is starting to look attractive again.

The simple fact is that investors around the world have lost so much faith in their banks and in the financial system as a whole that they’d almost consider doing what they’d have scoffed at another, less-affluent, generation for suggesting: hiding their money – or what’s left of it – under the mattress. Such is the confusion over where to find a safe financial haven that The Times of London ran this headline recently: “Frightened Investors Pile Into Property” – a suggestion which seems little short of surreal given that it was an over-inflated property market, combined with poor-quality mortgages repackaged as financial derivatives, which got us into this colossal mess in the first place. And yet there it is: the panic of September and October may have eased, but confidence has been severely damaged – so as Christmas approaches, bricks and mortar are once again in the ascendant as the investment-of-choice for those who’ve still got a few euros burning a hole in their pocket. As a result, could it be that Mallorca may manage to sidestep the worst of the property downturn after all – and see British, German and other European buyers back tentatively on the real estate trail in Spring 2009? “We were hoping that the fact that there’s always demand for more expensive properties would see us through the worst of 2009, given that recession in the UK and Spain has been forecast for some time now”, one international real estate agent who knows the Balearics well, told ABC Mallorca. “But now perhaps there is a little more reason for cautions optimism this Christmas … just perhaps. And if the fact that banks throughout Europe have been financially underpinned by their governments leads to some renewed activity in the mortgage markets as well, so much the better.” Despite the bursting of the property bubble on the Spanish mainland, it’s only fair to point out too that Spanish banks have

KOMMEN ZIEGEL, DACH UND FENSTER ZU WEIHNACHTEN ´08 WIEDER IN MODE? s ist Weihnachten und da sollte man nicht übertrieben verdrießlich sein. Trotz der Tatsache, dass die westlich-kapitalistische Welt gerade unaufhaltsam in eine Rezession steuert, befeuert durch eine globale Banken-Krise, gibt es doch einen saisonalen Hoffnungsschimmer – die Börsen gehen gerade dermaßen vor die Hunde, dass sogar der torpedierte Immobilienmarkt für Anleger wieder richtig schmackhaft wird.

Es ist ganz einfach so, dass die Investoren rund um den Erdball so viel Vertrauen in ihre Banken und das gesamte Finanzsystem verloren haben, dass sie ernsthaft überlegen, einen Ratschlag zu befolgen, für den sie eine andere, weniger wohlhabende Generation, spöttisch belächelt hätten: Versteckt euer Geld – oder was noch davon übrig ist – unter der Matratze. Die Verunsicherung darüber, sichere Geldanlage-Möglichkeiten zu finden, ist so groß, dass die Londoner Times kürzlich folgende Schlagzeile druckte: „Verängstigte Investoren flüchten sich in den Immobilienmarkt“ – ein ziemlich surrealerVorschlag. Denn es war ja gerade der zum Bersten aufgeblasene Immobilienmarkt, der uns, in Verbindung mit als Finanz-Derivate gebündelten RamschHypotheken, in diese kolossale Krise geritten hat. So ist die Lage: Die entfesselte Panik der Monate September und Oktober hat wohl etwas nachgelassen, aber das Vertrauen ist schwer erschüttert worden. Nun rückt Weihnachten näher und plötzlich steigt das Ansehen von Ziegeln und Mörtel als potenzielle Geldanlage wieder – für diejenigen, denen immer noch ein paar heiße Euros Löcher in den Geldbeutel brennen. Mallorca könnte also am Ende doch dem schlimmsten Sturm der Immobilienkrise ausweichen. Was wäre, wenn Briten, Deutsche und andere europäische Käufer im Frühjahr 2008 zögerlich auf den Immobilienpfad zurückkehren? „Wir hoffen, dass die Tatsache, dass die Nachfrage nach Hochpreis-Immobilien relativ konstant ist, uns 2009 über das Schlimmste hinweg rettet. Schließlich wurde die Rezession für Großbritannien und Spanien schon seit längerem angekündigt“, sagt ein internationaler Makler, der den Markt der Balearen gut kennt, zu AbcMallorca. Er fährt fort: „Im Moment sieht es so aus, dass wir pünktlich zum diesjährigen Weihnachtsfest ein wenig mehr Grund haben,

not been as badly hit by the sub-prime debacle as their counterparts around Europe. Finance Minister, Pedro Solbes, has given an assurance that the broader economy is not in danger, and Banco Santander is now the largest bank in the eurozone. All of which is good for Spain – and thus Mallorca – in terms of business sentiment. In the UK, the consensus certainly is that cash buyers are back on the property-investment trail – though without their bankers with them – and that too has got to be good news for Mallorca. “We are already seeing a huge amount of interest from investors – mainly because they believe that bricks and mortar are safer than banks and stocks and shares in the current climate”, 74 www.abc-mallorca.com

Spaniens Finanzminister Pedro Solbes hat eine Garantie dafür gegeben, dass die Volkswirtschaft nicht in Gefahr ist, und Banco Santander ist aktuell die größte Bank der Eurozone. Das alles ist gut für Spanien – damit auch für Mallorca – und verbessert die wirtschaftliche Stimmung. Im Vereinigten Königreich sind die Barkäufer wieder auf den Immobilien-Zug aufgesprungen – sie wickeln Deals ab, ohne dass ihre Bankberater ihnen dabei Händchen halten. Auch das muss für Mallorca eine gute Nachricht sein. „Wir erkennen bereits ein wachsendes Interesse der Investoren – vor allem deshalb, weil Stein und Ziegel unter den momentanen Bedingungen als Geldanlagen mehr Sicherheit versprechen als Banken, Fonds und Aktien“, bestätigt Liam Bailey, Forschungsleiter für Wohnimmobilien bei Frank Knight. Mark Dampier, Forschungsleiter bei Hargreaves Lansdow, einer unabhängigen Finanzberatung, stimmt zu: „Häuser kann man fühlen, anfassen, anschauen und bewohnen – es ist in vielerlei Hinsicht logisch, jetzt zu kaufen, wenn man ein Schnäppchen machen kann, statt das Geld in Banken zu hinterlegen.“ Robert Bilson von Savills drückt es noch plakativer aus: „Es gibt zurzeit viele Leute, die mit 50,000 Pfund Sterling in der Hand lieber eine baufällige Hütte kaufen würden, statt ihre Ersparnisse bei der Bank zu deponieren.“ In Deutschland ist die Angst vor einer Rezession größer als in Großbritannien. Die Wachstumsprognose musste von 1,4 Prozent auf 0,2 Prozent nach unten korrigiert werden. Experten befürchten, dass in Folge des schwachen Wachstums im kommenden Jahr 400,000 Arbeitsplätze wegfallen. Das ist gar nicht gut in den Augen der Mittelstands-Deutschen, die in Sachen Investitionen gewöhnlich sehr konservativ denken. Mark Dampier, Head of Research at the independent financial advisors, Hargreaves Lansdown, agrees. “With property, you can feel it, touch it, see it and live in it - so there’s a certain logic to buying now if you have the money and can get a bargain, rather than depositing in banks.” Robert Bilson of Savills puts it even more colourfully: “There are people with £50,000 who would rather buy a derelict house now and board it up for a while than put their savings in the bank.” In Germany, the fear of recession is as great as in the UK. Growth forecasts have been slashed from 1.4 percent to just 0.2 percent, with suggestions that there could be 400,000 job losses during 2009 as a direct result of that weaker growth. To eliminate any misunderstandings, it should be explained that Dr. Morano does not use a scalpel. Instead, he uses hollow needles to inject sophisticated filling liquids into certain parts of the body. Thus the surface structure of the face can be modified, body proportions can be corrected and breasts can be augmented. The most natural filling is the body´s own fatty tissue. Morano: “We can extract the fat from other areas of the body. Before re-injecting it, it has to be manipulated in the lab and can cause light inflammations. I prefer polylactic acid and hyaluronic acid as filling materials.” The results of this non-surgical treatment method fade after a certain time, if one doesn´t follow-up with new injections. Morano: “Patients can save money this way, because the base is laid and one only has to add a little bit every year. Above all, there´re no risks and practically no side effects.” The effects of the initial treatment last for about two years. Anyone who wants a permanent change - to their nose, for example - is referred to a reputable plastic surgeon (mostly at Palma´s Juaneda hospital) by Dr. Morano: “I collaborate closely with many colleagues

Statt Blut aus kleinen Schnittwunden fließen modernste flüssige Füllmaterialien mit Hilfe von kleinen Injektionen durch Kanülen in bestimmte Regionen des Körpers. Dadurch können Gesichtsformen verändert, Körperproportionen korrigiert oder Busen vergrößert werden. Die natürlichste all dieser Flüssigkeiten ist körpereigenes Fettgewebe. Dr. Morano: „Dieses Fett entnehmen wir an anderen Stellen. Es muss allerdings im Labor vorbehandelt werden und kann nach dem Injizieren Entzündungen verursachen. Ich halte Polymilchsäure oder Hyaluronsäure für überlegen.“ Die Ergebnisse dieser nicht-operativen Behandlungsmethode verschwinden nach einer gewissen Zeit wieder, wenn man nicht regelmäßig „nachspritzen“ lässt. Morano: „Die moderne ästhetische Medizin versucht, Operationen zu vermeiden. Das ist kostensparend und verursacht kaum Nebenwirkungen.“ Wer seine Nase oder den Busen für immer verändert haben möchte, wird von Dr. Morano an plastische Chirurgen seines Vertrauens (meist an der Clínica Juaneda in Palma) verwiesen: „Ich arbeite mit vielen Kollegen harmonisch zusammen, kenne die Spezialisten für jeden Operationstyp. Ich operiere selbst nicht, weil mir das keinen Spaß macht.“ Alle Therapieformen, die er anbietet, hat er vorher an sich selbst erprobt. Seine Methode ist die eines Künstlers, der Anatomie und Geometrie des menschlichen Körpers genau kennt. I have personally always been more interested in medicinal than surgical treatments.” Morano has tested on himself all the treatments he offers. His method requires artistic skills and precise knowledge of the human body´s anatomy and geometry. The template is based on the scientific “canon of beauty” - standardized forms, lines, and proportions with specifications - considered beautiful by almost all mankind. Morano: “With well-dosed infiltrations at key injection sites, for example, the angle of the nose in proportion to the face area can be modified, the nose is straightened or the chin can be rounded off.” He shows some sample photos and the results achieved with various imperceptible interventions seem amazing. A vitamin treatment can revitalize the skin of dyed-in-the-wool sunbathers, damaged by UV rays. The method is called Mesotherapy: Similar to acupuncture, a cocktail of minerals like selenium and magnesium, trace elements and vitamins (A,B,C) is injected by hollow needles into the skin. The therapy is carried out over 75 days, involving four or five infiltration sessions. “The skin needs to rest

Für notorische Sonnenanbeter gibt es eine Vitaminkur, die eine durch UV-Strahlen ausgelaugte Haut vitalisiert. Die Methode heißt Mesotherapie: Vergleichbar der Akupunktur wird ein Cocktail aus Mineralien wie Selen und Magnesium sowie Spurenelementen und Vitaminen (A, B, C) mit Hilfe von Nadeln in die Haut infiltriert. Innerhalb eines Zeitfensters von 75 Tagen finden vier bis fünf Sitzungen statt. „Dazwischen sollte die Haut Ruhephasen bekommen“, so Morano. Zwei- bis dreimal im Jahr empfiehlt er eine Auffrischung. Eine berühmt-berüchtigte Verjüngungstechnik ist sein Steckenpferd: Die Botox-Behandlung. Morano: „Die meisten Leute wissen nicht, worum es sich dabei eigentlich handelt - daher die Vorurteile, dass es gesundheitsgefährdend sei.“ Für ihn ist Botulinumtoxin tatsächlich ein Wundermittel, das - maßvoll und fachgerecht angewendet wenige bis gar keine Nebenwirkungen hat: „Die Kunst ist es, Botox exakt in die Muskelpartien injizieren zu können, etwa bei einer Straffung des Augenlides. Nach 4 bis 6 Monaten wird der Wirkstoff vom Körper vollständig abgebaut.“ Für eine anhaltende Wirkung braucht man neue Botox-Injektionen - stets maßvoll, damit der Gesichtsausdruck nicht „eingefroren“ wirkt. Interessenten sollten sich an gelernte Mediziner wie ihn halten und unseriöse Angebote in Urlaubshotels oder bei in- und ausländischen Schönheitsinstituten meiden. Der Herausgeber des deutschen pharmakritischen “arznei-telegramms”, Wolfgang Becker-Brüser, warnt vor „äußerst riskanten Spritz-Touren“ (Quelle: http://gesundheitsnews.imedo.de). Unsachgemäß bzw. überdosiert angewendet, kann sich das Nervengift Botox über die Injektionsstelle hinaus im Körper ausbreiten und zu Atem- und Schluckbeschwerden führen. Morano schließt solche Nebenwirkungen aus: „Dies kann nur bei sehr hoher Botox-Dosierung passieren, wie sie im klinischen Bereich, zum Beispiel bei der Therapierung von Spastiken oder Myoklonus-Syndrom, angewendet wird. Im ästhetischen Bereich stimulieren winzige Mengen nur einen bestimmten Muskel. Ich injiziere immer tendenziell wenig Botox .“ Eine unabdingbare Pflicht des Arztes ist es seiner Meinung nach ebenfalls, „Patienten mit falschen Vorstellungen zu bremsen“. Man

between sessions,” Morano explains. He recommends a renewal two or three times a year. One notorious rejuvenation treatment is his favourite: the Botox injection. “Many people don´t know what it´s really about, leading to prejudices that Botox might damage health,” Morano explains. For him Botulium toxin is really a magic liquid against wrinkles - with few or no side effects at all if applied subtly and professionally: “The art is injecting Botox precisely into the muscle fibres, e.g. for tightening the eyelid. After 4 to 6 months the organism completely breaks down the active ingredient metabolically.” For lasting effects, new Botox injections are necessary - always moderately deployed, in order to avoid a “frozen” facial expression. Patients interested in Botox should seek treatments from fullyqualified doctors, like Morano. The editor of German medical information sheet “arznei-telegramm”, Wolfgang Becker-Brüser, warns against cheap offers at beauty centres in holiday hotels (http://gesundheitsnews.imedo.de). Incorrectly injected and overdosed, Botox can spread through the whole body and cause respiratory and swallowing problems. Morano categorically excludes such side effects: “This can only happen with a very high dose of Botox, such as might be used clinically on patients suffering from spastic twitching or myoclonus, for example. In aesthetic procedures very small amounts of Botox stimulate certain muscles. I tend to be conservative when dosing and prefer later adjustments to avoid large doses.” From his point of view, a surgeon has the indispensable obligation to “caution patients with wrong ideas”, to maintain their physical and mental health. It isn't about changing a person´s identity with plastic surgery, but slightly improving the baseline. Morano thinks radical changes are unethical: “Michael Jackson is the daunting example. He is not the main culprit for his current monstrous appearance, but the surgeons, who were obligated to deny him the abnormal treatments he requested.” And if there are any complications? Morano: “As in any other job there is always a minimum risk with every application. We try to exclude risk factors beforehand through an intensive consultation with the patient and careful study of their medical history.” Some side effects are normal, however. After a lip augmentation or a nose correction the body reacts with minor inflammations which fade away after two or three days. Filling materials like hyaluronic or polylactic acid are fluids produced naturally by the human body, against which a person with an autoimmune disease (e.g. Aids) can build antibodies and therefore resist. Morano: “It also depends on the patient´s compliance. If one doesn´t follow my instructions and goes sunbathing directly after a skin treatment, complications can appear, which I can´t prevent.” However, he´d never refuse patients with problems from a treatment carried out by him: “Of course not. It´s obligatory for a physician to provide aftercare and maintain patients' health. I treat any complications myself or consult a specialist whom I trust.” Morano practises in a team of three doctors in his private clinic in Palma. He comes from Alcúdia, where the 53-year-old lives with his wife and his two daughters. He studied medicine at Barcelona University and started as a GP. Then he specialized in cosmetic surgery and went to France and Argentina to gain experience. His anti-aging concept is born from general human wisdom: “Treat your physical capital with care. You may eat well, but not too much; you should take exercise, but not excessively; your diet should contain vitamins and antioxidants. Lead a reasonable life: sufficient sleep, no smoking, no alcohol abuse.” The only thing a person can´t stop is the passage of time - but then there's always Dr. Morano to polish the wrinkles away.

An seinem heutigen monströsen Aussehen ist meiner Meinung nach nicht er selbst der Hauptschuldige, sondern die Ärzte, die seine abnormen Behandlungswünsche hätten ablehnen müssen.“ Und was passiert, wenn es Komplikationen gibt? Morano: „Wie in jedem anderen Beruf bleibt ein Restrisiko bei der Anwendung. Durch intensive Beratungsgespräche und anhand des Studiums der Krankengeschichte eines Patienten schließen wir vorab Risiken aus.“ Bei einer Aufspritzung der Lippen etwa oder einer Nasenkorrektur entsteht - als ganz normale Reaktion - eine lokale Entzündung, die nach zwei bis drei Tagen abklingt. Füllmaterialien wie Hyaluronsäure und Polymilchsäure sind körpereigene Stoffe, doch ein Körper, der an einer Autoimmunkrankheit leidet, kann dagegen Antikörper bilden. Morano: „Manche Patienten missachten die Richtlinien und nehmen kurz nach einer Hautbehandlung intensive Sonnenbäder. Dann entstehen Komplikationen, die ich nicht verhindern kann.“ Patienten mit Problemen nach der Behandlung schickt er nicht weg: „Auf keinen Fall. Es ist meine Pflicht als Arzt, die Gesundheit des Patienten zu erhalten. Eventuelle Komplikationen behandle ich selbst oder überführe an Spezialisten, mit denen ich eng zusammen arbeite.“ Er praktiziert mit zwei weiteren Ärztinnen in seinen Kliniken in Palma and Alcúdia, dem Ort, aus dem er stammt und wo der 53-Jährige bis heute mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Töchtern lebt. Er studierte Medizin an der Universität Barcelona und arbeitete zunächst als Allgemeinmediziner. Danach spezialisierte er sich auf kosmetische Behandlungstechniken und holte sich im Ausland Berufserfahrung, unter anderem in Argentinien und Frankreich. Sein Anti-Aging-Konzept entspringt dem gesunden Menschenverstand: „Man sollte sein körperliches Kapital schonend behandeln. D.h. gut essen darf man, aber nicht zu viel; Sport sollte man treiben, aber nicht übertreiben; Vitamine und Antioxidationsmittel sollte man zu sich nehmen und gleichzeitig einen gesunden Lebenswandel führen: genügend Schlaf, weitgehender Verzicht auf Tabak und Alkohol.“ Nur der Ablauf der Zeit lässt sich nicht abbremsen - und dann kommt Dr. Morano ins Spiel und lässt die Fältchen verschwinden.

OUR ENTIRE CIVILIZATION, IT SEEMS, WAS BUILT ON NOTHING MORE CONCRETE THAN CHAMPAGNE BUBBLES Goodness knows they've done their best, care-worn Gordon; dapper, diminutive Angela Merkel; wild-eyed Hank Paulson, even little “Sarko l'Americain”. But there's no holding back the tide of history. Our entire civilization, it seems, was built on nothing more concrete than champagne bubbles … So before you putyour ski chalet in Megève on the market or ship your entire stock of 1982 Château Lafite-Rothschild off to Christies for their next fine wine auction, before you flog that darling little David Hockney watercolour or the dour but history-laden oil by Gerhard Richter, take a deep breath, count to ten - and prepare for the Mother of all Christmases. The trick, of course, is not to talk to your bank manager between now and then - which shouldn't be too hard since there's fewer than a score of hardcore shopping days left. And here's a little ruse I've used successfully in the past: don't use your credit card for a week or so, not until you've lulled the deskjockeys who deal with Platinum People into a false sense of security. Yes, it will be difficult. But in my experience they'll think you're taking a long-overdue wellness retreat. Then off you go - straight to Palma Airport and onto the first flight to Paris. After all, where else would any right-thinking person go to indulge? Now I know you can't keep an eye on everything, so I'll update you. There are two brand-new stores you'll need to visit immediately: the first is Bulgari's glittering bi-level boutique on Avenue George V, its largest store in Europe … and the other is the new Ralph Lauren emporium on Avenue Montaigne, the largest women's-wear store in the world. That's a start. Then it's straight over to Sonia Rykiel on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, where the doyenne of French design is celebrating her fortieth anniversary as a cutting-edge designer. Despite being elevated recently to the ranks of the Légion d'Honneur, her prints, knitwear and accessories remain the dernier cri in raffish Parisian chic - and that's saying something. And La Rykiel herself remains a most entertaining, most knowledgeable guide to the nooks and crannies of the Paris around her Left Bank apartment. So here's her personal guide to stocking up for the Christmas table, from one who's always done it in style. The Grande Epicerie of Bon Marché she describes as “like Harrod's Food Hall, only better”. For chocolates it's Christian Constant on Rue d'Assas. For unparalleled macaroons it's Ladurée on Rue Royale. For cakes it's Poilâne on Rue du Cherche-Midi. And for a restorative glass of pastis or a petit café afterwards, it's the Café de Flore on Boulevard Saint-German, not far from her most iconic store. Der Clou an der Sache ist natürlich, zwischen jetzt und danach nicht mit Ihrem Bankberater zu sprechen, was eigentlich kein Problem sein sollte, weil eh nur noch eine Handvoll Hardcore-Einkaufstage ansteht. Folgenden Kniff habe ich in der Vergangenheit schon oft erfolgreich angewendet: Benutzen Sie Ihre Kreditkarte mal eine Woche lang gar nicht, um die Schreibtischhengste, die Kunden mit Platin-Karten betreuen, in falscher Sicherheit zu wiegen. Klar wird das brutal sein. Aber aus Erfahrung weiß ich, dass die von der Bank dann denken, man lege eine längst überfällige Verschnaufpause ein. Dann stehlen Sie sich klammheimlich zum Flughafen Palma und nehmen den nächsten Flieger nach Paris. Nebenbei bemerkt, wohin sonst sollte ein klar denkender Mensch reisen, wenn er sich verwöhnen will? Weil Sie kaum auf alles gleichzeitig achten können, helfe ich mit einem Laufzettel. Es gibt zwei brandneue Geschäfte, die Sie unbedingt sofort aufsuchen sollten: das erste ist Bulgaris zweistöckige Glitzer-Boutique in der Avenue George V, der größte Bulgari-Shop in Europa; zweitens gibt es die neue Ralph-Lauren-Empore an der Avenue Montaigne zu bewundern, der weltgrößte Laden für Damenbekleidung. Das wäre der Anfang. Danach geht es direkt zu Sonia Rykiel am Boulevard Saint-Germain, wo dieVorzeigedame der französischen Mode gerade ihr 40. Jubiläum als wegbereitende Modeschöpferin feiert. Obwohl sie kürzlich in den Stand eines Mitglieds der Ehrenlegion (Légion d´Honneur) erhoben wurde, sind ihre Drucke, Stricksachen und Accessoires nach wie vor der letzte Schrei im unkonventionellen Pariser Chic - was einiges aussagt. Außerdem ist „La Rykiel“ immer noch ein sehr amüsantes und sachkundiges Büchlein, um versteckte Adressen und Schlupfwinkel rund um ihr Apartment in der Left Bank zu finden. Ihr persönlicher Reiseführer macht sich toll auf dem Gabentisch, als Werk mitTipps von jemandem, der immer alles super-elegant macht. Zum Beispiel beschreibt sie das Kaufhaus „Grand Epicerie“ von Bon Marché als „vergleichbar mit der Lebensmittelabteilung des Harrods, nur besser“. Für Schokolade empfiehlt sie Christian Constant in der Rue d´Assas und für unvergleichliche Makronen-Plätzchen Ladurée in der Rue Royale. Die besten Kuchen gibt es laut Sonia Rykiel bei Poilâne in der Rue du Cherche-Midi. Und für ein erfrischendes Glas Pastis oder einen Petit Café danach empfiehlt sie das Café de Flore am Boulevard Saint-Germain, nicht weit von ihrem berühmten Hauptgeschäft entfernt. Wahrscheinlich ist es auch wissenswert, dass „SR“ ihr Bio-Obst und Gemüse immer im Marché Biologique am Boulevard Raspail kauft. Aber verzehren sie diese Sachen, bevor Sie nach Mallorca zurückkehren - das kann man gar nicht alles heil nach Puerto de Andratx schaffen, bevor es welk wird. Die Rykiel hat diesen berühmten Ausspruch ihres späten Freundes Jean Cocteau immer treu befolgt: „Zu viel ist für mich gerade genug.“ Heute gilt das nicht mehr, gibt sie zu. Diesen Mantel reicht die 78Jährige an mich weiter. So ehrenvoll bekleidet mache ich mich zu dem neuen Restaurant auf, das die gesamte Pariser Verführungskraft in sich trägt: Gordon Ramsey im Trianon Palace Hotel in Versailles.

UNSERE GESAMTE ZIVILISATION, SO SCHEINT ES, IST AUF NICHTS WEITER GEGRÜNDET ALS AUF CHAMPAGNER-PERLEN

onerously attired, it's off to the new restaurant that has all of Paris agog - Gordon Ramsay at the Trianon Palace Hotel in Versailles. Now Michelin-starred chefs are rare, but not perhaps as rare as you might think. I love statistics, so take a look: here in Spain, we have 91 one-star restaurants, ten with two stars, and four with three stars. In Germany, there are 184 one-stars, 15 two-stars and nine three stars, including the incomparable Dieter Müller. In the UK, there are 201 one-stars, ten two-stars and three threestars. But in France there are - wait for it - 492 one-stars, 70 two-stars and 26 three-stars. And those three-stars include illustrious names such as Paul Bocuse, Pierre Gagnaire, Alain Ducasse, Guy Savoy and the Troisgros Brothers, to touch but the tip of the iceberg. So hasn't Young Gordon - Ramsay this time, as distinct from Old Gordon Brown - a cheek to set himself up in the midst of such homegrown talent. You might think so, especially since he seems intent on taking revenge - as critic, Jasper Gerard, put it in The Daily Telegraph recently - “for a thousand years of Gallic condescension”. Did the earth move? Well, the tongue-in-cheek amuse bouche of scrambled egg, bacon and baked beans stuffed into the shell of a boiled egg certainly entertained. The beef wellington was one-inthe-eye for the locals. While the dessert of granny smith parfait with bitter chocolate and champagne foam was light - as it would have to be at the end of a seven-course tasting menu! It's a challenge, but worth it. So there you have it: my preferred pre-Christmas itinerary to get you in the mood for, well, Christmas - and perhaps the last rabidlyconsumerist Christmas of our lifetimes at that. In other years I might have done predictable “bah, humbug” things like complaining about Christmas office parties, lamenting the quality of the Christmas lights in Plaza Cort, grumbling about the crowds down Calle San Miguel from the Christmas market in Plaza Mayor, and wishing it was over already - and tomorrow was January 21, the feast of St. Sebastian. But there's no time for complaining. There's shopping to be done. Though perhaps I will say one quick prayer beside the crib in the Cloister of St. Antoniet - for the safe re-opening of the financial markets next month, and the faltering health of the Dow and the FTSE. Merry Christmas!

In Deutschland zählt man gar 184 Gourmet-Tempel mit einem Stern, 15 mit zwei Sternen und neun mit drei Sternen, darunter der unvergleichliche Dieter Müller. In Großbritannien gibt es 201 Restaurants mit einem Stern, zehn mit zwei Sternen und drei mit drei Sternen. Nun aber kommt Frankreich. Warten Sie - es sind 492 Restaurants mit einem Michelin-Stern, 70 mit zwei Sternen und 26 mit drei Sternen. Unter den höchstdekorierten Häuser finden sich illustre Namen wie Paul Bocuse, Pierre Gagnaire, Alain Ducasse, Guy Savoy und die Brüder Troisgros, um nur die Spitze des Eisbergs zu nennen. Und da besitzt doch der junge Gordon - diesmal Ramsey und nicht der gute alte Premierminister Gordon Brown - die Frechheit, sich in Mitten dieser Schar einheimischer Supertalente zu platzieren. Es kommt einem zumindest so vor, vor allem, seit er sich dazu entschlossen hat, als Kritiker Rache an ihnen zu nehmen. Jasper Gerard beschrieb es letztens im Daily Telegraph als „Antwort auf 100 Jahre französischer Herablassung“. Hat es ein Erdbeben verursacht? Nun, das ironische Häppchen aus Rührei, Schinken und gebratenen Bohnen, hineingestopft in die Eierschale eines gekochten Eis, hat sicherlich Spaß gemacht. Das Wellington-Rinderfilet traf die Einheimischen ins Mark. Der Nachtisch Apfel-Parfait mit Bitterschokolade und Champagner-Schaum schmeckte leicht - wie es nach einem Sieben-Gänge Kostproben-Menü sein soll. Es ist die Herausforderung wert. Das ist sie: Meine vorweihnachtliche Lieblings-Lustreise, um Sie in die richtigeStimmung für, ach ja, Weihnachten, zu bringen - bedenken Sie, vielleicht ist es das allerletzte Raubkonsum-Weihnachtsfest unseres Lebens. In anderen Jahren hätte ich mich wohl ausgelassen über nervige Weihnachtsfeiern in Betrieben, hätte mich über die billige Weihnachtsbeleuchtung an der Plaza Cort beschwert und über die Menschenmassen, die vom Weihnachtsmarkt der Plaza Mayor die Calle San Miguel hinunter drängen. Ich hätte mir vorab gewünscht, dass es schon vorbei wäre - und gleich am nächsten Tag das Fest des Stadtpatrons von Palma, San Sebastian, stattfände. Aber wir haben keine Zeit für Beschwerden, weil wir unbedingt einkaufen müssen. Obwohl - ein kurzes Stoßgebet neben der Krippe im Kloster St. Antoniet werde ich wohl doch sprechen - damit die Finanzmärkte im Januar 2009 unfallfrei wieder ihren Betrieb aufnehmen und es mit den kränkelnden Aktien-Indices Dow Jones und FTSE wieder aufwärts geht. Two business concepts were presented: Melanie and Oliver Fassbender talked about the new branch of German luxury textile producer “Van Laack” in Palma, Calle Conquistador 3. More than 40 beautiful, Classsic Cars made the round trip through Palma city a brilliant spectacle. The hosting Mallorcan classic car clubs president Georg was very pleased with the successful performance. On Sunday, October, 26, the car parade rolled forward from Son Quint Golf restaurant to Via Cintura, Paseo Marmo and trailed through Palmas inner city. The pedestrians were exalted waved to welcome the drivers of the illustrious vehicles. After one hour of touring all drivers gathered at the starting point and had lunch in the Son Quint Golf club house. Among the cars a Rover built in 1924, a historical Fiat 500 and a Mercedes 600 stuck out. Most of the drivers and front seat passengers wore vintage clothing consistent with their cars age. 80 Teilnehmer mit insgesamt 40 restaurierten Fahrzeugen ließen die Oldtimer-Rundfahrt des Classic Car Club zu einem herrlichen Spektakel werden. Jedenfalls zeigte sich CCC-President Georg hochzufrieden mit der Veranstaltung. Am Sonntag Nachmittag, 26. Oktober, startete der illustre Korso vom Clubhaus Golf Son Quint und bewegte sich über Via Cintura und Paseo Marmo in Richtung Palmas Innenstadt. Viele Schaulustige winkten den Fahrern dort begeistert zu. Nach einer Stunde Fahrt traf man sich am Ausgangspunkt zum gemütlichen Mittagessen. Unter den Autos stachen ein Rover aus dem Jahr 1924, ein historischer Fiat 500 und ein Mercedes 600 hervor. Die meisten Fahrer und Beifahrerinnen erschienen in zum Baujahr ihres Autos passender Kleidung. Das mallorquinische Paar Paco und Almudena gewann den Preis für die beste Aufmachung im Stil der 60er.

DENNOCH KÖNNEN MENSCHEN IN NOT AUF DIE HILFE VIELER WOHLTÄTIGER ORGANISATIONEN BAUEN or many it's a heart-warming festive time: Christmas trees, attractivelywrapped presents and twinkling street decorations bring a magical smile to children´s faces. In the weeks leading up to the festivities, there's an air of delightful expectation. But there´s another side to the coin: people who are struggling to survive become particularly aware of their desperate circumstances during the glittering holiday season.

At the beginning of November, Spanish online news page www.20minutos.es reported that 57,000 people were unemployed on the Balearic Islands - an increase of 53 per cent on November 2007. By the end of the year the number is expected to rise to 82,000 an unemployment rate of 14 per cent this winter, the highest level for 12 years. Already, many people in Mallorca have run out of unemployment pay (“Paro”). Large numbers of people here are homeless or live in shabby apartments below the poverty level, often through no fault of their own. Pensioners of all nationalities are extremely affected - in the municipality of Calvià, 20 per cent of all retired people are categorised as “poor” - and then there are the long-term unemployed, washed-up expats from South America and naïve luck-chasers from other EU countries. In the streets of some districts of Palma, people can be seen searching for food or other necessities in the rubbish bins. It's a growing phenomenon in Spanish cities and was highlighted in the news in October on Spanish TV channel TVE. One reason is that, in contrast to the UK and Germany, Spain has no official welfare policy. Anyone who falls through the cracks in the land of the bullfight, cannot demand a standard governmental benefit - even though, according to EU guidelines, people of all nationalities registered as

Dennoch gibt es eine Kehrseite der Medaille - Menschen, denen es nicht so gut geht und die dies gerade an Weihnachten besonders zu spüren bekommen. Laut Informationen des spanischen Onlinedienstes www.20minutos.es waren Anfang November diesen Jahres auf den Balearen 57,000 Menschen arbeitslos gemeldet, 53 Prozent mehr als 2007 im gleichen Monat. Die Zahl soll bis Jahresende auf mindestens 82,000 steigen - das entspricht einer Arbeitslosenquote von 14 Prozent in diesem Winter, der höchste Wert seit 12 Jahren.

Andererseits gibt es auf Mallorca viele Menschen, die längst keinen Anspruch mehr auf Arbeitslosengeld haben, oder noch nie einen hatten. Manche sind obdachlos, andere hausen in schäbigen Wohnungen unterhalb der Armutsgrenze - teils selbst verschuldet, teils unverschuldet. Es trifft überproportional viele Rentner - allein in der Gemeinde Calvià sollen 20 Prozent betroffen sein sowohl spanische als auch Senioren aus anderen EULändern, aber auch Dauer-Arbeitslose, gescheiterte Auswanderer aus Südamerika und unvorbereitete Glückssucher aus dem EU-Raum. Wer aufmerksam durch Wohnviertel in Palma geht, sieht nicht selten Menschen, die in Mülltonnen nach Essbarem und Nützlichem suchen. Sogar der Staatssender TVE 1 berichtete Ende Oktober in einer Reportage offen über dieses Phänomen spanischer Städte.

living in European Union member countries are entitled to receive a minimum aid and living space. The guidelines have not yet been processed into national legislation. There's no equivalent in Spain to British housing benefit. However, it´s not totally hopeless and nobody need die in the street, because in Spain - and in Mallorca - there are many institutions helping people in financial distress. The assistance is seldom monetary, but often practical and material. For those affected, the problem is knowing where to go to find help. Officially, the social service department of Palma town hall is the first contact; the city has nine “Serveis Socials” offices (e.g. in Calle Temple 10 - Phone: +34 971 22 59 77). But the big national churches, Christian organisations, The Salvation Army, and the German “Social Cultural Club”, run by charming senior José Rodríguez, also help in emergency situations. To clear any doubts, here's an official quote from www.spanienclub.de describing a case of private insolvency abroad: “British or German citizens don´t have a legal claim to welfare benefit in Spain. Somebody living for decades in a country of the European Union other than his own, getting into trouble there, hardly finds a solution. If he doesn´t want to suffer extreme poverty or even die of hunger he must leave the country.” Only people who have previously been in regular work here and have received unemployment pay with a maximum of six months' entitlement - can claim a minimal welfare benefit. Even Spaniards only obtain monetary help if their income is lower than 2,250 (!) euros in one year. That´s the compelling logic in a country where pensioners obtain average pensions below 600 euros a month. In the UK and Ireland an average pension is over 1,000 euros per month. Those who turn to Eric Bradley (37) of The Salvation Army in Cala Mayor can at least hope for free clothing and warm meals (Phone: +34 971 70 11 10). The preacher and Salvation Army captain can´t promise money and accommodation, however: “In such cases we contact Palma town hall and try to get a place in one of the refuges.” Bradley is a friendly person reading the Bible in his office, who's served in Mallorca since January 2008, together with his wife and five children. On request, Bradley hands out coupons for free clothes, second-hand furniture and other household items - things donated to the Salvation Army shops. Bradley: “We invite more kind donations of clothes and ingredients for meals, like meat and vegetables, to our church in Son Caliu, Calvià.” “What´s missing most in the world are people caring for the emergencies of others” - quote Albert Schweitzer. “Mr. Rodríguez, you are such a person” is written on a certificate from the German consulate, displayed in the German Social Cultural Club (DSKV) premises in Santa Ponsa, and signed by the former German consul Karin Köller and all her team. José Rodríguez is now 72 years old and has lead DSKV for 17 years. His mobile phone number is probably the most popular “last number to call” on the island (Phone: +34 610 212 949) . „WAS DER WELT AM MEISTEN FEHLT, SIND MENSCHEN, DIE SICH MIT DEN NÖTEN DER ANDEREN BESCHÄFTIGEN Ein Grund dafür ist, dass Spanien im Gegensatz zu Deutschland und anderen nördlichen EU-Ländern keine Sozialhilfe bzw. Hartz IV kennt. Wer im Stierkampf-Land auf die Hörner genommen wird und durchs soziale Netz fällt, kann vom Staat keine finanzielle Pflichtleistung verlangen. Dabei sind laut EU-Richtlinie theoretisch Menschen aller Nationalitäten förderberechtigt, die in Spanien aufenthaltsberechtigt bzw. gemeldet sind. Doch die Vorgaben wurden noch nicht, oder wenn ja, mangelhaft umgesetzt. Auch so etwas wie Wohngeld gibt es bisher nicht. Dennoch ist nicht alles hoffnungslos. Es gibt auch in Spanien - und Mallorca - viele Stellen, die Menschen in Not helfen. Diese Hilfen sind selten finanzieller, sondern oft praktisch-materieller Natur. Das Problem für viele besteht darin, die richtigen Wege und Ansprechpartner mit der „allerletzten Telefonnummer für Notfälle“ zu finden. Offiziell ist die Sozialhilfe-Abteilung des Rathauses (in Palma: Departamiento de ayuda social del ayuntamiento de Palma) erster Ansprechpartner (Tel: +34 - 971 22 59 77). Allein in Palma gibt es neun Service-Stellen der städtischen Sozialdienste „Serveis Socials“ (z.B. in Calle Temple 10). Aber auch die Institutionen der Landeskirchen, die britisch-evangelikale Kirche, „The Salvation Army“ (Heilsarmee) und der Deutsche Sozial-Kulturverein Calvià unter Vorsitz von José Rodríguez helfen im Extremfall. Um alle Unklarheiten zu beseitigen, sei an dieser Stelle der Ernst einer in Spanien erlittenen Privatinsolvenz in aller Deutlichkeit beschrieben. Im Internet findet man unter www.spanienclub.de folgenden bemerkenswerten Paragraphen, den ein Rechtsberater schreibt: „Einen Rechtsanspruch aufSozialhilfe gibt es für deutsche - und damit auch britische - Staatsbürger in Spanien nicht. Jemand der über Jahrzehnte seinen tatsächlichen Lebensmittelpunkt in einem anderen europäischen Land hat und für eine gewisse Zeit in Schwierigkeiten gerät, hat vor Ort nur geringe Chancen. Will er nicht extrem darben und mittelfristig verhungern, muss er das Land verlassen. Eine Chance, etwas zu bekommen, haben nur Personen, die in Spanien in einem offiziellen Arbeitsverhältnis standen, und zuvor Arbeitslosengeld („Paro“) bezogen haben, welches ohnehin nicht sehr lange (meist 4 oder 6 Monate lang) gezahlt wird. Die Hilfszuwendungen sind dann sehr niedrig. Circa 10,000 Deutsche in Spanien erhalten durch die dortigen sozialen Organisationen leidlich geringe Zuwendungen. Aber selbst Spanier bekommen nur zusätzliche Hilfen, wenn sie Einkünfte von weniger als 2,250 Euro pro Jahr (!) haben. Das ist die zwingende Logik in einem Staat, in dem die durchschnittliche Rente bei unter 600 Euro liegt.“ In Deutschland liegt die durchschnittliche Rente eines Arbeitnehmers über 1,000 Euro im Monat. he knows both Spanish and German culture, having lived for 30 years in Hamburg. In 1991 he returned to Mallorca and founded the association, which mainly helps the elderly and sick. Rodríguez spends a lot of time in hospitals. The DSKV has 1,400 members, whose subscriptions are used to fund welfare projects. But Rodríguez can´t pay out money: “Everybody can get vouchers for food and clothing, but not cash. Unfortunately, many might spend it on alcohol or drugs.” Rodríguez is part of a social network of organizations, showing stranded people a path through the bureaucratic jungle. The best solution for washed-up expats and poor or sick pensioners is to return to their homeland. Rodríguez: “I have a special agreement for cheap flights with one airline. If necessary I personally go with the people concerned. The social workers in the country of origin are informed.” Those who don't want to leave the island - and there are many cases, as Rodríguez knows - must walk the difficult road to Spanish social services and, if homeless, apply for social housing. “These applications must be made in a written form and are often rejected. If this happens, the authorities´ letter of rejection enables me to take legal action against the Spanish government at the European Social Court, citing discrimination against the applicants.” He´s quite upset about the fact that Spain has not established a regulation for social welfare yet, in spite of having been admonished by the EU and having obtained “millions of euros to set up programmes”. A social court and an official social statute book don´t exist and thus legal action is blocked. The local “Serveis Socials” service points of Palma town hall only concede a temporary emergency fund - for former recipients of “Paro” - amounting to some 400 euros a month. It's the same amount for one person or a family with three children. Rodríguez: “Calculating the current costs for living, this money can be used to pay the rent or buy food - but not both.” So every organization helps a little bit to fight pain and emergency and Rodríguez is one mediator. He and his members are available 24 hours a day on the mobile phone. In addition, all churches, the Caritas (Phone: +34 971 71 62 88) and the Salvation Army are basically helping points. Bradley: „Ich möchte alle Bewohner Mallorcas dazu aufrufen, uns Kleidung und Lebensmittel zu spenden, damit wir mehr für die Armen tun können.“ „Was der Welt am meisten fehlt, sind Menschen, die sich mit den Nöten der anderen beschäftigen“ - Zitat Albert Schweitzer. „Herr Rodríguez, Sie sind solch ein Mensch“, steht auf einer Urkunde des Konsulats der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, die im Aufenthaltsraum der „Asociación Social Cultural Alemana de Calvià“, dem deutschen Sozial-Kulturverein Calvià (DSKV), hängt. Unterschrieben haben ExKonsulin Karin Köller und alle Konsulats-Mitarbeiter. Rodríguez ist mittlerweile 72 Jahre alt, er leitet den DSKV seit nunmehr 17 Jahren. Seine Handynummer (Tel.: +34 - 610 212 949) ist - besonders unter Deutschen aber auch Residenten anderer Nationalitäten - die vielleicht berühmteste „letzte Nummer, die man noch anrufen kann“. Abweisen würde er niemanden und immer „irgendwas organisieren“, verspricht der rührige, warmherzige Senior, der selbst zwischen beiden Kulturen lebt. Seine Töchter, Enkel und Urenkel leben immer noch in Deutschland. Er selbst kam 1991 zurück nach Mallorca, nachdem er 30 Jahre lang in Hamburg gelebt hatte. Der von ihm gegründete DSKV zählt 1,400 Mitglieder, die alle einen Jahresbeitrag bezahlen, der in einen Topf fließt. Dieser Fond dient diversen sozialen Hilfsprojekten - jedoch nicht der Auszahlung einer Sozialhilfe im Ausland. Rodríguez: „Essensmarken und Kleidung kann ich ohne Probleme herausgeben, jedoch kein Bargeld. Das geben Betroffene leider meistens für Alkohol aus.“ Rodríguez ist ein Teil eines Netzes sozialer Organisationen und hilft in Not Geratenen durch den Behörden-Dschungel. Für gescheiterte Auswanderer, verarmte Rentner und Pflegefälle sieht er nur einen sinnvollen Ausweg: Die Rückkehr in die Heimat. „Ich habe ein Abkommen für günstige Flüge mit einer Fluggesellschaft. Wenn nötig, begleite ich die Betroffenen persönlich. Das entsprechende Sozialamt vor Ort wird informiert.“ Wer nicht zurück will - und da gibt es einige Fälle, wie Rodríguez weiß - dem bleibt der Gang zu den Sozialbehörden der Insel und die Bitte um Zuteilung einer Sozialwohnung. Rodríguez: „Diese Anträge müssen schriftlich gestellt werden und werden oft abgelehnt. Passiert dies, wende ich mich mit dem Ablehnungsschreiben an das europäische Sozialgericht Brüssel und klage wegen Diskriminierung und Verletzung der SozialhilfePflicht.“ Es ärgert ihn besonders, dass Spanien trotz EU-Ermahnung und „millionenschwerer Förderprogramme“ bisher keine Regelsätze für Sozialhilfe aufgestellt hat: „Es gibt hier kein Sozialgericht, das ich anrufen kann und immer noch kein Sozialgesetzbuch, auf das man sich berufen kann.“ Die örtlichen Servicestellen des Rathauses Palma („Serveis Socials“) geben nur zögerlich Auskunft. Nur in extremen Notfällen wird nach Ablauf derZahlungen des Arbeitslosengeldes ein kurzfristiges Notgeld in Höhe von 400 Euro pro Monat gewährt - egal ob die Betroffenen alleinstehend sind, Kinder haben, EU- oder NichtEU-Ausländer oder Spanier sind. Rodríguez: „Das bedeutet bei den aktuellen Lebenshaltungskosten, entweder zu essen oder die Miete zu bezahlen. Beides geht nicht.“ So muss eben jede Organisation ein bisschen helfen, um die Not zu lindern - und Rodríguez zieht die Fäden. Er oder seine Mitarbeiter sind 24 Stunden am Tag erreichbar. Ansonsten sind alle Kirchen grundsätzlich Anlaufstationen, sowie Caritas (Tel: +34 - 971 71 62 88) und Heilsarmee. Somit bleibt Weihnachten doch ein Fest der Hoffnung - auch für Außenseiter und Obdachlose.
