The Line Game
Phoneme Awareness Procedure 1. Distribute the picture cards . Have children identify the objects pictured . 2. Select a child to start the line . Name the object pictured, and help children identify the final sound . 3. Have children look at the cards they are holding and decide whether they have a picture that begins with the same sound as the ending sound on the first picture card . The child holding a picture that begins with that sound stands next in line . 4. Children say the new object’s name and identify its final sound . Have children continue to form a line using final and initial sounds until everyone with a card is standing . 5. Redistribute the cards, and play the game again . Differentiate or Extend ▲ For additional support, have students look at their pictures and identify the initial and final sounds . Circulate the room, and ensure children have correctly identified the sounds . This will support students during the activity . ▲ Consider taking and printing photographs of the line of children . Be sure the pictures on the cards are easily identifiable . Post an enlarged copy of the photograph so children may view it . When they look at themselves, they are likely to revisit the activity, pointing to the pictures and naming the objects . Letter Connections ▲ Use a letter to determine who starts the line . Randomly select one of the letter cards, and ask children to identify the sound it represents . Then, ask a child who holds a picture card that begins with the corresponding sound to start the line . Note: The letters c and k both represent the /k/ sound in these sets . Use the letter appropriate for the set . Similarly, both the letter s and ce are used to represent the /s/ sound . The Line Game Objective Students will identify initial or final phonemes in words and match phonemes . Overview This is a challenging activity, and ample support should be provided throughout . Each child is provided with a picture card . Children line up by matching their cards so the final sound of one child’s card is the same as the beginning sound of the next child’s card . Materials carefully selected picture cards, one for each child in the group (see the table on the next page for suggestions); letter cards that represent the initial and final sounds of each of the picture cards (optional) School-Home Connection Invite children to draw or find pictures of objects at home and bring them to share . Select, as appropriate, some to use in a line game . If you have taken photographs of children holding the cards in a line, send them home sample samplewith children to share . ▲ Display all the letter cards appropriate for the set . As children build the line, arrange the cards in the order in which the sounds are represented in the line .
