Can You Help Me with These Sounds?

Phoneme Awareness Procedure 1. Teach children the lyrics on the next page to the tune of “Are You Sleeping?” Conclude the song by sharing a segmented three- or four-phoneme word, such as /k/—/ă/—/t/ . 2. Have children blend the phonemes and say the word cat . Offer guidance as needed . Restate the sounds and the word . 3. Provide more segmented words for children to blend . Begin with three-phoneme words . Repeat the song several times, using new segmented words each time . Later, use four- and five- phoneme words . These will be more challenging . Suggested words are displayed in the table on the next page . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Use the same song for blending syllables into words . For example, you sing /krŏk/—/ә/—/dīl/ and children say crocodile . ▲ Use picture cards to support children . Display several cards, and identify one of the objects pictured by saying it in segmented form . Have children select the picture card you named . ▲ For a more difficult task, invite children to take the lead and provide words in segmented forms for their peers to blend . Letter Connection ▲ In order, display the letters that represent the sounds in the target word . As you sing each sound, point to the letter that represents the sound . Use words that reflect children’s existing knowledge of letter-sound correspondences . Can You Help Me with These Sounds? Objective Students will blend phonemes to form words and segment words into phonemes . Overview The teacher asks children to help put together words that have been segmented into their constituent phonemes using the tune of “Are You Sleeping?” Children reply by blending the phonemes to create the words . Materials picture cards (optional); letter cards (optional) School-Home Connection After children are comfortable with the song and if they can segment several words themselves, invite them to take home picture cards to share the song with their families . Encourage them to find objects in their homes to sing about . Welcome them to bring those objects to share with the sample sampleother children .
