Slow Motion Speech
Phoneme Awareness Procedure 1. Ask children to move in slow motion . Suggest several actions, such as waving, turning around, flapping their arms, or putting on a hat . 2. Start to speak in slow motion, stretching words as you say them . Begin with your name . Say it very slowly . Have children say it . Then, have children say their own names in slow motion to themselves and to partners . 3. Say other words in slow motion . (See the next page for sample words .) If you have a plastic “walking” spring toy, stretch it as you say words . Note: Remember, some phonemes are not continuants and cannot be stretched . Avoid adding “uh” to these sounds . For example, ball should be pronounced baaaaaaaallllllllllll, with the initial, noncontinuant sound said briefly and the continuant sounds elongated (rather than buuuuhhh— aaalll) . 4. Contrast the stretched version of the word with the word as it is typically said . Repeat the two versions several times . If you are using a plastic “walking” spring toy, show it collapsed, then stretch it as you elongate the word . Engage in slow motion speech occasionally as children engage in other activities, such as cleaning up, moving outdoors, or selecting activities . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Have children walk across the room as they slowly say their names . Have them begin their names on one side of the room and continue saying them as they move to the other side of the room . Do this in small groups, and then let volunteers go individually . Letter Connection ▲ Show children letter cards and have them practice stretching the sounds . Be sure to restrict use to letters that represent continuant sounds, that is, those that can be stretched without distortion . Then, advance to word cards and have children practice stretching each sound in the Slow Motion Speech Objective Students will build toward segmenting the phonemes in words by exaggerating them . Overview The teacher models speaking very slowly so that phonemes are exaggerated and become more noticeable . Children are encouraged to speak in slow motion, too . Materials plastic “walking” spring toys (optional) School-Home Connection Encourage children to share their names in slow motion with their families . If available, provide each child with a plastic “walking” sample samplespring toy to take home . word, being mindful of only stretching those sounds that can be stretched without distortion .
