China Digital Conference 2018 Melbourne 21st August – Sydney 23rd August Now in the seventh year China Digital Conference 2018 (CDC) will present a major focus on the key drivers across the ecommerce platforms in China. This year’s CDC will host over sixty high profile keynote speakers from China, Asia, NZ and Australia. CDC provides an important insight to the NEW RETAIL developments and how Australian retailers, producer’s suppliers and marketers’ can benefit from this growing new retail trend in China. CDC will also provide an update to the latest e-commerce developments and opportunities for Australian companies.
China’s “scramble for new retail” Mark Tanner Founder China Skinny Shanghai Earlier this month JD launched its first 7FRESH, a 4,000 square metre grocery store in Beijing that follows many of the new retail concepts from Alibaba’s Hema stores. JD heralded the supermarket the first of 1,000 stores that could open in the next three to five years. Hema also plans to significantly ramp up its presence, with 2,000 stores planned over the same period. The focus of 7FRESH is a “personal and educational” hands-on shopping experience including “magic mirrors” that sense when customers pick up a product, and display product information such as nutritional facts and origin. JD also plans to introduce smart shopping carts allowing consumers to shop hands-free, which will be particularly helpful for shoppers with kids in tow. Facial recognition allows shoppers to check out and pay using the technology, able to walk out directly with the purchases or have them delivered within 30 minutes.

Marketers need to understand that the difference between the China and Australia markets is not only about the “Great Firewall” and language barriers, but more importantly, the consumer motivations and behaviours. In other words, why do they buy? One important fact is the Chinese government’s implementation of the one-child policy in 1979. Demographers estimate that the policy averted at least 200 million births between 1979 and 2009. From an online marketing perspective, it is important to recognize that the majority of China’s online consumers between ages 20 to 40 are from those only-child families.
For the parents and grandparents (post-50s) of the ‘one-child’ children, having lived through The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, they consider it an imperative to improve the conditions and experience for their children. Similar to parents in post-WWII America and Europe who wanted their children to benefit from the rising global economy in the 1950s and 1960s, consumption behaviour of China’s parents reflect their desire to enhance the lives of their children, and subsequently their own lives, by providing products and opportunities that they may, in the past, have been denied.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO MARKETERS? The 20 to 40 age group presents is a huge market and, unlike their elders, they are more willing to try new things, to indulge in luxury goods, are more brand conscious and more receptive to foreign ideas. The older generation are hesitant to spend money on themselves, but are more compelled to buy for the benefit of their child/grandchild. One way to reach China’s older generation, one could argue, and as many local companies and increasingly more foreign enterprises are beginning to realise, may be by appealing to the Confucian values of respect for family elders; adopting an indirect marketing strategy.

It is part of the growing new retail trend in China which has seen online giants shake up the bricks & mortar scape by creating richer, more convenient shopping experiences which drive significantly higher sales than traditional retail stores. Much like Alibaba’s ema, D is using big data from its 266. million shoppers to help craft the experience. Physical stores still account for more than 0 of China’s retail overall and well over 90 of grocery sales, so JD and Alibaba’s battle for supremacy will be interesting to watch. Unlike the pure ecommerce world, where libaba has significantly higher margins by farming out most marketing, stock holding, fulfilment and customer service to brands, in the physical world it will be operating a more full service’ model like D. hilst D’s market cap is ust one-seventh of libaba’s, it has some very powerful organisations behind it. Tencent is the largest shareholder of D, owning a fifth of the retailer. Its super-app WeChat leads China’s o2o and social media spheres, which will provide valuable data and influence to assist
in the success of 7FRESH. Tencent’s new retail grocery ambitions will also be supported by the stake it purchased in Yonghui in December, yesterday’s investment in Carrefour’s China business and aturday’s launch of its first unmanned WeChat store in Shanghai. almart the world’s largest company by revenue owns 12 of D and is likely to provide insights and support to 7FR from its wealth of retail experience including 22 years in China. It will not only help Walmart gain traction in China’s previously elusive ecommerce and new retail segments, but it will also provide plenty of learnings to roll out in its almart stores in China, and potentially to its stores in the US and globally. In short, there is no better player than JD to take on the mighty Alibaba in the new retail game. Two hungry, data-focused, well-funded and well-oiled players, and a host of other competitors, will ensure the rate of innovation in China’s retail segment will continue to dazzle. It will also create another segment where China is likely to lead the world and possibly export its systems globally.
“New retail in China is happening, and happening fast, and brands that best understand and embrace it are most likely to succeed in the years ahead” China Digital Conference will explore this new platform in detail with industry experts.

Five steps to ensure lasting data security Network security built on perimeter defences are no longer enough so businesses need to quickly identify the issues inside their networks. Having a strong perimeter for protection is the basic foundation for network security today. However, that network border is losing its defensive barrier as businesses migrate their applications and infrastructure to the cloud, so businesses need to take a new approach. In its recent report, 2017 State of the Hybrid Cloud, Microsoft found that 63 per cent of organisations are already using hybrid cloud environments. The result is that gaps are starting to appear in perimeter defences, which can be exploited by hackers or malware to steal information and personal data. Organisations need to focus less on perimeter defences and focus their efforts on identifying unusual user or network behaviour, which may be an early sign of a potential breach or attack. Take these five steps to safeguard your network security: 1. Assign roles specific to new threats
2. Audit data and infrastructure
Rather than spreading responsibility across the IT department or giving an existing manager additional responsibility, organisations should put a single person or team in charge of security to ensure the security strategy is given the attention it deserves.
It’s important to know what type of data an organisation is dealing with, including policies attached to each type of data, who has access, and where workloads accessing critical data are running. It’s also crucial to document data-capture methods for compliance. An initial audit and ongoing asset discovery can provide visibility into security and compliance postures in real time. It also lets organisations identify how and where it may be vulnerable, so it can act to close gaps.
3. Create baselines
4. Monitor for abnormalities
Once an organisation understands its data profiles, it needs to capture expected behaviours. This includes aspects like who is authorised to see data, and how that access is granted or denied, all of which should be recorded and turned into a baseline of expected behaviour.
Monitoring user and network behaviour against baselines can help organisations identify anomalies which could signal a potential breach. This could include a user downloading terabytes of data when their role doesn’t normally require them to do so, or a member of the marketing team accessing server logs. The security team can then investigate further to either stop a breach from happening or verify that the activity is legitimate.
5. Secure data Organisations need to secure their own processes and data. For example, personally-identifiable information needs to be secured through data masking to ensure security itself isn’t the weak link. Security strategies focused on perimeter defences can no longer protect sensitive data against theft in today’s complex IT environments. Organisations need to be able to quickly identify threats and vulnerabilities inside their networks, to keep information safe. 20

TOP TAX DEDUCTIONS FOR SMALL BUSINESS ADVICE FROM THE ATO 1. The money must have been spent for your business (not a private expense). 2. If it is for a mix of business and private use, only claim the portion that is related to your business. 3. You must have records to prove it. For example, you can claim a deduction for a laptop if you bought it for your business – just claim for the proportion of business use (not private use) and keep your receipt.
TAX CONCESSIONS YOU CAN CLAIM If you buy and install business assets by 30 June, and they You can claim a deduction for most costs you incur in running your small business. For example, you can generally claim the following expenses in the

Do you need to do a stocktake? If you estimate that the difference between your opening and closing trading stock is $5,000 or less, you don’t need to do a stocktake. Instead, you can include the same amount for your opening and closing stock in this year’s tax return.

Digital Marketing Meets Billboards Grow Your Business With Both! Studies show that people who have seen an outdoor marketing campaign are 17% more likely to follow up and engage with that brand on mobile. Rather than debating whether to pool efforts and resources into digital marketing versus print advertising, it should be common practice for businesses to invest in both. So, what exactly are the benefits?
#1 Reach With 72% of Australians travelling on roads to and from work and over 3.5 billion searches per day on Google, you’re bound to reach a more significant portion of the marketplace by using both online and offline media. Offline media, like billboards, are great for driving traffic to your website and your other online presences. Following this, investment in digital advertising tools such as SEM (search engine marketing) and SEO (search engine optimisation) keep you on the front page of relevant searches when people are looking for information and/or are ready to buy.
Digital marketing solutions provide a means of converting the billboard-generated leads into sales. Let’s take the example of theatre companies that use both online and billboard advertising. A customer may be driving and notice a billboard for a new stage-play. The billboard creates the call-to-action, but it’s not until that same customer searches online that they can make an actual ticket purchase through the theatre company’s website.
#3 Tracking ROI Billboards are often incredibly eye-catching, but the pitfall is that it’s near impossible to track your return on investment without using an online marketing solution. Digital marketing tracking platforms and tracking phone numbers are arguably the only way to quantifiably determine whether your billboard is generating results for your business. Balancing marketing efforts between online solutions and print media, like billboards, seems to be the recipe for success when it comes to increasing audience reach and analysing results by tracking the impacts of your advertising. Want to know more? Contact: Nicole Wagenecht from ReachLocal on 0432 621 450 or Mark Buckley from Civic Guides Media on 0401 909 400.
In short, investing in both is an opportunity to cast a much wider audience net, in order to capture a greater number of people, in varying situations.
#2 Impact and Conversion 88% of people say that brands on billboards stand out to them, and 78% say that they notice outdoor advertising generally. But, how do customers follow up on information they’ve seen on a billboard?

When It Comes To Selling Gen X And Millennials, Most Businesses Suck-diddily-uck, Flanders The face of small business is changing. Gen X’ers and Millennials are BACK - in pog form! and account for 55% of all business owners in Australia. They don’t wear suits. They don’t trust authority. They’re the post-punk generation. The social media generation. They believe in loyalty. They were raised on pop culture. And here’s the truth: most businesses don’t know how to sell to them. It’s like they’re trying to convince them that they want a peanut instead of $20, when $20 can buy many peanuts. Explain how? Money can be exchanged for goods and services. Woo hooo! At Strategic Anarchy, we deliver cromulent and embiggening, world-famous sales and marketing systems designed to speak to Gen X and Millennials in a way they get - and in a way that helps them to get you. From the legendary Sword of Sales - our text-based video game that not only teaches about sales, but rewards players with a customised sales script - to our 8 Percent Thought Leaders program, Strategic Anarchy’s revolutionary tools are backed by 15 years of industry experience.

It’ll happen to you! Strategic Anarchy is cutting-edge. We’re unlike anything you’ve seen before. And we’re ready to take your business to the next level. Dad, what’s the point of this story? 121 Creative Cq designs Raphael’s new website
In the 2014 edition of the Louis Vuitton City Guide to Sydney, Raphael Jewellers was the only boutique jewellery brand to be included, seen in their view as the “king of bespoke jewellery”, with their store being described as recreating “the warm luxury of a European boutique of the 1900s”.
We are very proud of our recent web designs for a very unique client. Raphael Jewellers is owned and managed by the creative brothers, Raphael and Joseph Akelian, specialising in the design and manufacture of fine jewellery. The business was established in 1989, opening its first store on the second gallery level of the iconic Strand Arcade in the heart of Sydney. Over the past 25 years the brothers have developed enviable position as one of Australia’s leading jewellery houses, for both their ready to wear collections and their more acquired individual bespoke pieces.

Mobile Apps
The new standard for business consumer interaction By Avanti Karve
We use our mobile phones to consume businesses like never before. But research indicates that consumers tend to turn away from the websites they find difficult to use on their phones. nlike websites, apps are specifically designed for mobile devices and have a range of device specific features that are not available on websites. So why is it that globally, less than 4% of businesses have adopted a Mobile App.
Inhibitors to Mobile App adoption Traditionally the primary inhibitor of mobile app adoption by businesses has been price, with the typical mobile app costing anywhere between $25,000$100,000+ to develop. When you factor in the complexity and total cost of ownership of a Mobile App, including upkeep and coverage over multiple device platforms, the numbers add up.
Enter the App Designer Recently there have been many DIY Mobile App designers introduced to the market to help alleviate the cost and minimise the complexities of App maintenance. App designers allow you to create your Mobile App by dragging and dropping predefined visual components on to a Webpage. These are then compiled and transformed into a downloadable Mobile App.

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS’ CYBER RISK? Cyber Risk is increasing for businesses. Businesses using the Internet for making transactions and conducting activities have never been more vulnerable. - Does your company have a network connected to the internet or a website? - Does your business make use of mobile devices like laptops or mobile media to transport/store data including email communications? - Do you collect and store customer information through a CRM system? - Do you carry on trading through an e-commerce store? - Do you hold files with personal information of your employees? With most business operations being conducted over the Internet, cyber risk exposures are increasing. What are your business’ first-party risk exposures and the third-party liability exposures?
First- Party Cyber Liability Exposure 1: Loss or damage to digital assets – such as data or software programs (code), resulting in expense/loss/cost incurred in restoring, updating, re-creating or replacing those digital assets to the same condition they were prior to the loss or damage. 2: Business interruption from unplanned network downtime is a major cyber risk causing interruption of service or failure of the network, resulting in loss of income/ cost of operations and/or extra cost having to be incurred in minimising loss plus forensic investigation for the network failure can hurt businesses. 3. Cyber extortion risk– attempt to extort money by threatening to damage or restrict or deny service of the network/ or access to online store, threat of release of data obtained from the network and/or attempt to communicate with the customers using social engineering tools to get hold of personal information resulting in loss of revenue/ cost of ransom paid. 36

4. Reputation damage risk – due to data protection breach becoming public and resulting in loss of customers and/or increased cost of operation.
Third-Party Cyber Liability Exposures 1. Security and privacy breaches pose a constant cyber risk – iinvestigation, defense cost and civil damages associated with security breach, transmission of malicious code, or breach of third-party /employee privacy rights or confidentiality, including failure by outsourced service provider 2. Investigation, defence cost, awards and fines for privacy breach resulting from an investigation or enforcement action by a regulator as a result of security and privacy obligation can be a costly cyber risk. 3. Customer notification expenses risk – legal, postage and advertising expenses if there is a mandatory legal or regulatory requirement to notify individuals of a cyber security or privacy breach. 4. Cyber risk associated with Multi-media liability – investigation, defence cost and civil damages arising from defamation, breach of privacy, negligence in publication of any content in electronic or print media, as well as infringement of the intellectual property of a third party. 5. Loss of third party data – liability for damage to or corruption / loss of third-party data or information, payment of compensation to customers for denial of access, failure software, data errors and system security failure. A cyber attack can cripple a business of any size. By planning in advance and purchasing a cyber insurance policy, businesses can minimize their risks, costs, and the impact of a cyber attack on their reputation and brand.
