elcome to the ninth anniversary of Australia-China Business Week Forum Series. Since its conception, ACBW has aimed to build a platform for Australian and Chinese businesses where they can network, share ideas, gain knowledge and conduct business. Having returned from China in September where both ACBW China Forum and the ABF Australian Pavilion were for the second year successfully presented at CIFIT in Xiamen on the 8-11 September, the Australia China business sector is driving the Australian economy across many industry sectors and in particular tourism. This year, the ACBW 2016 Sydney program will focus on important challenges and trends affecting the
Australia-China relationship such as the ‘One Belt, One Road’ Initiative, the growing Chinese appetite for Australian premium food and the opportunities and challenges of Chinese e-commerce for Australian businesses. A highlight this year’s Sydney forum is the ACBW 2016 Luncheon. We are honoured to have the Hon Andrew Robb AO present this year’s Australia China BusinessWeek Keynote Address. Which is ideally timed twelve months after the start of the CHAFTA. The Luncheon also includes a high profile panel discussion with Mark Hawthorne Editor at Large Fairfax Media moderator and panelists Hon Stuart Ayers MP Minister for Trade Tourism and Major Events and representatives from Tourism Australia, Swisse Wellness and

s the flagship event of the Australian Business Forum, Australia-China BusinessWeek (ACBW) 2016 Sydney is ABCW’s most formidable grouping of SME and business leaders, with a series of keynote addresses, forums and panel discussions. The diverse offering is a prime opportunity for China-ready and early-stage Australian businesses to gain insight and expand further into China. Since its conception, ACBW has aimed to build a platform for Australian and Chinese businesses where they can network, share ideas, gain knowledge and develop opportunities. This year, the ACBW program will address some of the biggest issues affecting the bilateral relationship such as the ‘One Belt, One Road’ Initiative, the growing Chinese appetite for Australian premium food and the opportunities and challenges of Chinese e-commerce for Australian businesses. There are many Australian successful enterprises that have engaged with China such as The a2 Milk™ Company

On the back of its China growth, a2 Milk™ Company this year was admitted to the ASX 200 index on the Australian Securities Exchange, making it one of the 200 biggest listed companies in the country. Another is Swisse Vitamins, which has grown from a small family-owned business into a global health foods giant worth in excess of $2 billion, which resulted in Hong Kong-listed Biostime taking a controlling stake for $1.67 billion in September last year. The opportunities for Australian small business sector with twelve months opening up from CHAFTA are exceptional. This years Australia China BusinessWeek Forum in Sydney provides a good platform for business to engage with China. Chinese Tourism Boom Shows no Signs of Slowing
China is Australia’s most valuable inbound tourism market. Australia has experienced faster arrivals growth from China than any other market.
“Understanding cultural and business knowledge is especially important in China.” RAY EVANS Founder & CEO, Australian Business Forum
The number of Chinese tourists was up 23% to 1.6 million in the year to September, and their spending in the year to July was up 27%, to $8.9 billion – almost 25% of spending by all foreign visitors to Australia.
smartphones constantly, expect free WiFi, they use Union Pay to access to cash. They want to be assured that they have access to their staples, congee for breakfast, staff who speak their language and a safe modern hotel.
Australia now tops China’s rankings of destinations, and of places people intend to visit. The chief drawcards, according to Tourism Australia’s research, are food and wine, natural beauty, and blue skies.
And with all these modern expectations,
The “millennial” visitors, a third of the total from China, are also seeking the type of experience they can’t have back home, and that their friends might not yet have had – so they can claim social media bragging rights. This new generation of inbound tourist use their 10

this new generation of tourists are seeking immersive experiences, the days of tour buses are fast vanishing. Instead, they are seeking out selfdrive holidays and learning to surf. The destination has changed, previously they may have gone for a long haul destination, North America or Europe, however, as they have become more confident about booking their own holidays, they have rapidly turned to Australia. This new generation of tourist likes to shop too, they rely on Australia’s clean image, putting faith in the fact that products are authentic in Australia, they are truly modern consumers, they look for the brands. Tasmania has surged in the last couple of years, particularly after a visit by China’s President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan. Tasmania’s lavender bear has also become something of a cult sensation, because it can only be bought at the Bridestowe Lavender Estate farm door in Tasmania.

Tourism Australia has been running a large-scale campaign in China this year, including promotional videos on massive screens at subway lines, in Beijing and elsewhere. The campaign includes a new Chinese-language version of the Australia.cn website, the first foreign tourism body to operate such a site in China. John O’Sullivan, CEO of Tourism Australia says the tourism industry is now more China-ready, with Chinesespeaking staff on shifts and Chinese menus at hotels, and Chinese signage at airports, making the travellers feel comfortable. There was a boom in Japanese tourism in the 1980s and 1990s, “but not on the scale or rapidity of this”, aided by the growing number of Chinese cities with direct flights.
This year XIAMEN Airlines commenced operations from Fujian Province to both Melbourne and Sydney. China Southern commences direct flights to Adelaide from December.
Added to this is the major investment of up to 40% shareholding by Chinese enterprises in Virgin Australia. Qantas has also increased its focus on opening up more flights to China going forward.
This will expand the number of inbound tourists to Australia well ahead of previous projections, with next year’s lunar New Year is bound to set new record of Chinese visitors.

These digitally-driven changes are just the tip of the iceberg. The CommBank 2015 retail Insights report says “the digital revolution is only just beginning” and there is “ample time for late adopters to get ahead of the curve.” So, we know that eCommerce will continue to be game-changer in 2016. HIGH-TECH CHANGES IN STORE Your bricks and mortar store will become a high-tech, interactive experience – in a subtle way, if that’s what your brand calls for. Beacons will be commonplace, pushing offers to customers’ smartphones. Face detectors may be used to track and analyse shopper behaviours. And augmented reality will bring your products to life in bold new ways.
CLICK & COLLECT AS A STANDARD In 2015, Click & Collect lost its buzzword status and became a standard offering. So this year, every retailer who values faster and more convenient shopping for their customers will be offering it. If you’re a pureplay online store, you could offer collection at Parcel Lockers1 or Post Offices. It’s all about making it as easy as possible for customers to receive their goods.

own small business last year. Jack and Max spent months launching a small cafe in Melbourne but when they tried to pay for custom packaging ordered in China, they hit a wall. The rates were extremely high and the whole process excessively complicated. Having spent the past few years helping banks optimise their foreign exchange, Jack knew there was a better way. The result was Airwallex.
