We are blessed with magnificent sunsets, and as darkness falls each evening the city lights up to create a magical scene. Continually thankful that the leaders of our country are committed to preserving our environment and that they pay great attention to climate change.

The beauty of an angel PROFILE BY JAN JANSSEN, VIVA PRESS

No one does it quite like the Dutch stunner, Doutzen Kroes. With mesmerizing natural beauty, the iconic Victoria’s Secret supermodel mum of one, opens up about her early career, fitness goals and beauty regime, to her future aspirations. 16

ABODE April CS6.indd 16

3/26/15 11:09 AM

H

ow important is it to believe in yourself? In the case of an 18-year-old Dutch girl with the unlikely name of Doutzen Kroes, she refused to give up even when she felt lonely and afraid after arriving in New York City in 2003 to pursue a modelling career. Growing up in the tiny village of Eastermar (pop. 1600) in a remote northern region of Holland called Friesland, Doutzen dreamed of living a more glamorous life. A strikingly attractive teenager, her friends kept telling her that she could make a fortune as a model. So she sent a few photos of herself to Paparazzi, an Amsterdam-based modelling agency, with the vague hope of earning some extra money and maybe getting to travel to Paris. What followed was beyond her wildest expectations. The agency immediately signed her to a contract and flew her to New York where she was put up in a flat in a seedy area of the city that she shared with several other wannabe models.

"I felt super-young coming from the north of Holland, and I went to Amsterdam only once before I went to New York. It was a really big adventure to go there," Doutzen recalls. "But it was very hard at the beginning. I didn't really like the area where I was living (the meat-packing district), and I wasn't getting any jobs because people kept saying that I was 'too pretty' to do runway shows because I was distracting from the clothes. I was thinking about going home but I have a pretty tough character and I just told myself that eventually something would happen." "I wasn’t booking jobs, and I was very lonely. There’s a Dutch saying that my mother had always told me: 'You’re not made out of salt,' so being tough and very disciplined helped. The success that people see now took a long time to achieve." Her determination paid off. Within a year she landed her first magazine cover for the French edition of Elle, and in 2005 her big break came when the iconic fashion photographer Stephen Meisel shot her for the cover of Italian Vogue. "When that issue came out, everything changed. All of a sudden everyone

wanted to work with me. Meisel is the godfather of fashion and photography. It opened up my eyes to how the industry works— it’s very important to do editorial." VICTORIA'S SECRET ANGEL She did her first show for the mega-selling Victoria's Secret lingerie brand (annual earnings in excess of $6 billion) in 2005, following in the footsteps of Bündchen, Heidi Klum, and Adriana Lima. With her statuesque (5'9"), full-figured beauty and charismatic runway appeal - "I was never a sample size (0) except maybe when I was 11 or 12" - Doutzen was an immediate hit as a VS model and in 2008 she was signed to a contract with the brand, thereby becoming an official Victoria's Secret Angel. "Signing as a Victoria’s Secret angel opened so many doors" Doutzen explained. "The recognition you gain is tremendous and it takes you beyond the limits of the fashion world and gives you international exposure that is hard to get otherwise." Over the years, Kroes has become the campaign spokesmodel for major global brands that include L'Oréal (hair and makeup products), Tiffany & Co, (jewellery), and most spectacularly, Calvin Klein (fragrances).

"The recognition you gain is tremendous and it takes you beyond the limits of the fashion world and gives you international exposure that is hard to get otherwise." - Doutzen Kroes 17

"I've always known that beauty is also from the inside - if you're happy, that will shine through - I've always believed that, but since I've started having a family, I became even more happy, and I think it even shows more." - Doutzen Kroes

COMBINING WORK AND MOTHERHOOD While supermodels like Kroes tend to take on an ethereal aura and are held in almost Goddess-like esteem by the public, it would be easy to forgive her for becoming overly enamoured with her fame and fortune. But there is no room for ego or excess in the world of the very level-headed Doutzen. Though people may think being a model consists of non-stop parties and glamorous events, she offers a cautionary note to young girls thinking of making a career in the business and who may be reading the fashion magazines and watching the various "Next Top Model" shows. "(People have the impression that) the industry is always glamorous, (but) it’s not! We have to work really hard. I’ve been doing this for 10 years, and now I’m getting some of the glamorous side. But in the beginning, it’s taking the subway to go to castings, running around. It’s really hard work! In the beginning, you don’t

get to fly home and visit family whenever you want because you don’t have the money, and you can’t miss a moment because the next opportunity could be waiting." In every sense, Kroes is still the goodnatured Dutch girl from Friesland who is happily raising two daughters together with her DJ husband, Sunnery James, a star in his own right. The handsome couple were married in Amsterdam in 2010 and are proud parents to a 4-year-old son, Phyllon, and toddler daughter, Myllena Mae, born last July. Kroes had no qualms about starting a family at a moment when her career was skyrocketing and she was at her busiest. "The balance between being managing a career and being a mother is always going to be a challenge, but I believe in being active and working hard. I love having a beautiful family which makes my life so whole. I've also become more successful since I've become a mother. To me, that's like proof that if you're happy that's good for you, and people see that."

Added Kroes: "I've always known that beauty is also from the inside - if you're happy, that will shine through - I've always believed that, but since I've started having a family, I became even more happy, and I think it even shows more." Based out of Amsterdam, where she prefers to spend most of the year, and New York, Kroes and James both travel extensively for their jobs, although she generally brings her children with her wherever she goes. "When my eldest starts going to school, I might have to re-think that although I will probably be doing something else with my life – maybe acting - by then." HEALTH AND BEAUTY SECRETS After the birth of her first child, Doutzen was back at work barely three months later and looking in perfect shape. She believes that her body's ability to recover its supermodel shape so quickly is a result of having both good genes and her maintaining a healthy lifestyle overall. She follows a routine called Ballet Beautiful developed by trainer Mary Helen Bowers three to four times a week and follows a restrictive diet one month before a major fashion shoot or show.

18

ABODE April CS6.indd 18

3/26/15 11:09 AM

HER LIFE AWAY FROM THE PHOTO SHOOTS Away from the catwalk and cameras, Doutzen maintains a relaxed look. She is often spotted by paparazzi wearing jackets and jeans and little makeup and some might say she even looks more beautiful in her every day, natural self than her supermodel alter ego. "I would define my style as casual chic. That means I wear lots of jeans and T-shirts and I like to dress it up with accessories like a nice bag or a pair of shoes. I love jeans. The fit is very important. A little bit stretchy comfortable and especially how the butt looks, I'm a typicaly girl that way." (Laughs)

"I prefer not to wear too much makeup when I'm not working, so my skin care routine is just jumping in the shower and putting on moisturizer." - Doutzen Kroes Explained Kroes: "It's a mix of genetics that I got from my mom and eating healthy and being active all my life. I've always worked out and I'm young. It's the work you put in before that's more important."

She maintains a relatively simple beauty routine when she's not working. Kroes likes to go relatively make-up free when she's not working and advises working women to do the same. Said Kroes: "I don't always feel sexy even though I have to look it and I've just learned to go into on and off mode. I'm a mom at home and then I go into work and it's nice to have that contrast. I see a different person in the mirror when I'm at work with hair and makeup than when I'm home."

every meal.' Is that reality? I work really hard for it [my body] because it’s my job! I have to be in the gym every day. I have to be really healthy. I have to give up things for it. Nobody’s going to win the world Olympics without practicing. At some point, I had to tell my agent, “I can’t not eat, because I get hungry!" "I prefer not to wear too much make-up "Diet is 70 per cent of what your body when I'm not working, so my skin care looks like. You can work out all you like routine is just jumping in the shower and but if you don't eat well, I stop drinking putting on moisturizer. I've been using [alcohol] a month before the show and no vitamin E oil and that's been working sugar. I still eat carbs because to have just really well and then I'll put on lip gloss or protein and vegetables for me, it doesn't mascara and that's it. And L'Oréal Paris BB work. But I eat one potato with some fish cream—it's quick and not heavy. and greens - very basic and happy food." For the past three years, Kroes has hired a personal trainer, the former boxer Michael Olajide - videos of their routines can be found on YouTube - to keep her in top shape while also working with Bowers at her gym in New York's Soho district.

She also wants women to know that maintaining her fabulous figure requires constant work. Doutzen says she also had "(Mary also) comes to my place [in New to fight early in her career with modelling York] and she does Skype sessions agents and casting directors who wanted (when Kroes is on the road - ED). Ballet her to lose more weight than she as is amazing for a woman's body - you work on the little muscles. I like the prepared to do. "I can’t stand it when combination between both boxing and models say 'Oh, I eat whatever I want — ballet. It's very extreme." fried chicken for breakfast, dessert with

"At night time I have a little bit more time, because then kids are in bed. I enjoy taking a long shower. Basically, all I do is just a moisturizer and maybe some mascara. I go see a facialist once in a while, and I put on an oxygen mask and moisturizer. That's it." At 30, the divine Doutzen is more in demand as a model than ever. Even though she recently ended her contract as a Victoria's Secret model because she is too busy doing other projects (some have suggested it was a salary dispute), Kroes is on her way to becoming one of the most successful supermodels on the planet.

JELENA BIN DRAI

A Wo m a n Apa r t Designer, model, mother, and businesswoman, Jelena Jakovljevic Bin Drai is the essence of a lady who has built a lifestyle empire. The Serbian-born beauty, talks to ABODE about her style secrets, must-haves, and we delve into the latest collection for her fashion line, Jelena by Jelena J. Bin Drai by harriet gyamfuah

F

ormer Miss Yugoslavia – of 1998, Jelena Jakovljevic Bin Drai, has not only made Dubai her home since 2001, but in this short time, Jelena has also carved out for herself a thriving empire. With a background in economics, architecture and business, the beauty queen is the founder of two beauty salons: Vanilla by Jelena Ladies Salon&Spa and Chocolate by Jelena Gents Grooming Salon&Spa, the five-star Asya’s Nursery , Al Das Medical Centre, and of course the divine ready-to-wear, Jelena by Jelena J. Bin Drai.

Jelena has formed a niche in the UAE’s local fashion industry, which could be attributed to her influence from both her European roots, as well as from the flair of living in the Middle East. The marriage of both cultures ultimately has brought about the birth of Jelena having an eye for beautiful bespoke gowns.

The savvy entrepreneur and busy mum-of-three, launched her luxury clothing brand in 2012 and the fashion wheel has not slowed down ever since. The brand focuses on sheer elegance with comfort, using exquisite craftsmanship and the highest quality fabrics to create chic and wearable collections with a contemporary, on-trend edge. Suitable for a host of different occasions, each piece is timeless and classic – the perfect addition to the modern woman’s wardrobe. “My collections are for the modern woman who craves a wardrobe of standout pieces. It can be quite difficult to find brands that walk the line between couture and ready-to-wear,” says Jelena.

24

ABODE April CS6.indd 24

3/26/15 11:10 AM

“When I modelled, I wore creations of couture designers and developed a great admiration for the labour-intensive artistry involved in creating these gowns. And I wanted to make transitional pieces for ladies who didn’t want to compromise on luxury, but could work fashion into their everyday lives — from attending a gala to an evening dinner.”

My Way,

How do you approach dressing for work? I prefer to keep things minimal and sophisticated, so I dress more conservatively for meetings, opting for welltailored pieces with classic jewellery and accessories. Feeling comfortable and confident are the most important factors for me.

What is your alwaysfeel-fabulous outfit for work? As a working mother of three, busy days are inevitable so I opt for apparel that looks smart while still expressing my sense of style. I’m always on the go so I take into consideration the different aspects of my everyday life, choosing ensembles that allow me to go from a business meeting to picking up my two sons and my daughter from school.

What are your favourite brands? Rather than particular brands, I love classic pieces that can enhance an outfit in different ways and transform the wearer, no matter what the occasion. I think every woman should have key wardrobe staples such as a pencil skirt, maxi dress, great fitting pair of jeans and a pair of stilettos – these can then be mixed and matched with on trend pieces.

Top & Skirt: Jelena by Jelena J. Bin Drai SS15

Top & Trousers: Jelena by Jelena J. Bin Drai SS15

What is on your wish list for the Spring Summer 2015 season? I don’t tend to follow specific fashion trends as I think it’s more important to take into account body shape, using clothing to highlight the parts you feel most confident about. I’m drawn to sophisticated and timeless pieces – demure with a hint of sexiness and I try to incorporate these ideals into my collections, creating playful yet elegant designs that stand out whilst exuding classiness.

MEN’S AGENDA Creating one’s signature style is not the work of clothing alone, and while men’s hairstyles are not being introduced seasonally (or yearly even), its trends are changing. Thus to create that one look you aspire to have, it is equally important to find one that best suits you as much as finding that good pair of trousers or sneakers that perfectly fit.

Compiled by Narx Moncada

This Spring/Summer 2015, we’ve seen how Tom Ford’s collection has been accentuated by different hairstyles that not only gorgeously highlight its take on the less casual, warm tones interpretation of the South but also how it completed each look.

LET’S GET PAMPERED!

ABODE seeks out the best and latest treatments in town to make you feel and look fabulous.

Zoom Advanced Power Teeth Whitening at British International Dental Centre

A

BODE is so grateful to British International Dental Centre for bringing ZOOM Advanced, it uses low temperature cold light to avoid irritation of the nerves of the teeth. This treatment has no side effects and whitens the teeth for up to two years. Zoom Advanced is recognized as the safest and most effective power whitening system currently available. With the help of Dr. Sushil Thomas, who is a nice and warm dentist; he assessed my teeth, then cleaned them, put fluoride on them and advised me the ZOOM Advanced procedures. It started by putting protection on my gums then putting a mouth retractor, only after that he used the laser machine and the procedure included four cycles - each cycle is 15 minutes. After the session, I am in awe how white my teeth are! The possible side effect is sensitivity of teeth that usually only lasts for a few hours and is reversible. If you are a coffee lover like me, make sure to book your appointment now so like me, you can smile without inhibitions! Treatment price: QR QR 2,650 For appointments call: 4460 6058 or email: dr_sarah_isdc@yahoo.com

The HydraFacial:

A Gentle, Efficient Treatment for Your Skin

Y

ou would be right to be sceptical about HydraFacial; a treatment that promises clearer, more hydrated, younger-looking skin immediately, but minus the aggression that is usually associated with machine powered facials. HydraFacial prides itself on being just as aggressive—without the aggression, and it certainly does live up to the hype. Situated within the exclusive compounds of Dr. Kaldari Surgi-Art Centre, the HydraFacial - which takes its name from the word ‘hydrate’, simply meaning ‘to cause to take up moisture’ is an ideal treatment for all skin types, targeting hyperpigmentation, oily/congested pores, fine lines, and wrinkles. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes and to target redness and dark spots a red LED light is added to combat inflammation. Based on a 4-step method, the technician firstly cleanses and exfoliates using a ‘deplaning’ tool which opens up the pores so to remove the uppermost most layer of dead skin. This is followed up with the glycolic peel, which is one of the gentlest acid peels, creating only the faintest of tingles on the skin. With the use of an elaborate vacuum-esq looking nozzle called vortexextraction, this is the part of the treatment where you will be able to witness what exactly is being extracted from under your skin.

The final step is the infusion of an antioxidantand-collagen-rich serum into the skin which promotes elasticity and hydration. The skin is left looking brighter, feeling softer and the best thing about it is the-no-side-effects as the treatment is soothing, refreshing, non-irritating and with immediate visible results. Treatment price: QR 2,000 For more information call Dr. Kaldari Surgi-Art Centre on: 4451 5177 www.surgiartcentre.com

beauty Q&A Your answers to those everyday beauty questions you've always wanted to ask. By Karen Montgomery Makeup artist & hair stylist. Facebook: ‘The Powder Room Doha’ Instagram: @karenmontgomerymakeup Compiled by Chet Tibayan

Summer is just around the corner! ABODE wants you to be ready for it so we seek the help of a pro; Karen Montgomery is a Doha-based hair and make-up artist who gave her best to answer our common beauty concerns. Read her answers and be fully equipped for summer from sunblock to 2015 hair and make-up trends.

From Carol

to use Q.When sun-block?

Kenzo, Moisturizer

What is the best sunblock you can recommend?

A.

Coming from a colder climate I love this time of year, the weather is beautiful so Qatar is bursting with outdoor activities. So this is a good time to include sun protection into your daily routine. We know that the sun’s rays are harmful and cause damage so what is the best product and how regularly should you be using it? Simply, you should be using sunblock in some form every day. For the days spent lit only by the glare of your computer screen, then products incorporating SPF will be sufficient (think BB Creams, tinted moisturizers, foundations). Shiseido make wonderful cosmetics incorporating SPF. For a more budget friendly alternative look at Olay moisturizers. For beach and sporting activity days you need a broadspectrum sunblock where the SPF is high. Banana Boat Sport Performance Coolzone Broad Spectrum SPF30 is an easy to use spray sunblock with a cooling sensation. A non-greasy no-rub formula it cools the skin with a pleasant cucumber fragrance, powerful enough for extreme sun protection and dips in and out of the pool.

Shiseido, Sunblock

Bobbi Brown, Tinted Moisturizer

From Aprille

it still advisable Q.Is to use moisturizer during the summer?

A.

Short answer YES! Moisturize all year round. Even though it’s so hot and sweaty in summer, your skin needs protecting and calming more than ever. Use a lightweight non-greasy formula if your skin is prone to breaking out with the humidity. Save the richer formula products for nighttime. If you want to skip any part of your day routine, I would minimise the makeup you put on after cleansing and moisturizing.

"It's always summer somewhere." - Lilly Pulitzer

Bobbi Brown, Eyeshadow palette

From Nympha

Q.What makeup

trend is to watch out for this summer?

A.

This summer is all about the pastel eyeshadow or the classic red lip. If going with the eye trend pick out nursery hues of lilac, candyfloss or peppermint. Concentrate the colour on the eyelid to make this trend pop. For the red lip trend, go for a true red, not too orange and not too blue. This works beautifully with minimal eye makeup and a luminous face. We are saying bye-bye to heavy contouring (Yay)!!

From Carleen

said it is Q.They advisable to

wash your hair once or twice a week but Doha’s sandstorm is bad and makes my hair feel eeeky, do you know any tips for hair care that is tailored for desert weather?

A.

If you must wash your hair more frequently, say after sports or a sandstorm, then I suggest using a conditioner or treatment mask to put back in some goodness. Alternatively if your hair is long enough, tie it up on sandy days to minimise eekyness! Or, take lead from local custom and work a beautiful headscarf into your outfit. Five Ways

Keep it simple!

to Nail Summer

(Less is more) Milan Fashion Week showed us that this year is about ‘barely there’ nails. Keep tones in your white, pink, beige family or go for more sheer coverage.

COMPILED BY LAUREN OLIVER OF www.lovethefringe.com.au

Occasionally, we forget how those accumulations of compressed keratin at the end of our fingers can complete a look and even define it. So this summer, don’t get burnt by unpolished pointers, here are five ways to nail your nails for summer.

Mix it up! Express yourself! If ‘being trendy’ isn’t for you, then don't sweat it. Printed press on nails are easy and fun and come in a great variety of shapes, colours and styles. (BONUS: You get to put them on in the comfort of your own home.)

Those ten fingers you got there, they’re sisters not twins. Alternate between colours or paint one or two in contrasting colours.

Texture Nowadays, your nails are an accessory, so accessorise them! Glitter nail polish can be a great way to add texture, impact and a little bit of bling.

DIY A decent manicure doesn’t require a trip to the nail bar. There are now so many easy and affordable ways to get a million dollar mani at home. Nail appliques are a great option for anyone who already has a good set of nails. Opt for a monochrome geometric or stick with something classic, like stripes.

Cheats Guide to Beauty COMPILED BY LAUREN OLIVER OF www.lovethefringe.com.au

The search for a miracle beauty answer does not always have to lie within particular products. There are many simple and easy techniques you can do with items already in your cosmetic bag. Here are five beauty hacks that will surely improve your makeup routine. Lauren Oliver is The Fringe. Fashion graduate, makeup artist and blogger, crazy cat lady and self-professed shopping addict.

Give Yourself a Brow Lift! A very wise makeup artist once told me that, ‘your eyebrows are like coat hangers, without them, they can’t make the dress look pretty on the rack.’ Your entire face hangs from your eyebrows and yet they’re a feature we sometimes overlook. Concealing or highlighting around the edges of your eyebrows will make them stand out, make them appear more defined and give you an instant brow lift.

Lashings of Lashes! Feathery, fluttery, fullness is easier to achieve than you think. Put on a layer of mascara as usual, then sprinkle baby powder on a cotton tip and rub the powder onto your lashes. Whack on another layer of mascara and it will catch on the powder and make your lashes look thicker and more voluminous.

Stroke of Light! Didn’t catch enough Z’s last night? No worries! Use a light reflecting shimmer eye shadow and place it on the inner corner of your eye, right where your tear ducts are. This is going to make your eyes look brighter and younger and make you look more alert and awake.

Nose Job! What if I told you, you could change the shape of your nose in your own bathroom? Simply use an eye shadow, about 3 or 4 shades darker than your foundation, and blend it down the sides of your nose. This will sharpen and define it and make it look thinner. If you have a long nose or a hook nose, blend a bit on the end of your nose and it will fall out of focus.

Killer Kissers! If you’re after that perfectly, plumped pout and you want to avoid a trip to the cosmetics lab, redrawing your lip shape is an easy and effective way to give the illusion of bigger lips. Use foundation to cover up the original crest of your lips. Then use a lip liner or eyeliner pencil and draw in your new shape. Add your colour and tap on a touch of gloss to the centre of your lips for that fuller than full look.

the Hairstylist From starting out as a model for a hair exam, David fell in love with the profession when he witnessed all the wedding models having their hair styled. Trying to find his way into the field, David enrolled as an apprentice in a small southern French city called Nimes, and it was his Parisian mentor who helped to instil in David his love of all things hair. This sparked David’s eagerness and willingness to move to Paris so to further pursue his new found passion. A notable career achievement came through his second love: football, when David was part of the Yves Saint Laurent haute couture show for the 1998 Football World Cup Final. With over 300 models, this was one of the biggest shows ever staged in France. His fashion work (www.sybillekleber.com/hair/david-martinez/ portfolio) continued to gain recognition to which then David’s boss proposed a plan for creating a trendy, high-end salon in The State of Qatar. Being here in Doha, David continues to win the smiles of his clients’ post hair transformations, and that is not difficult as David has an impressive accolade of past clients. Having worked with the likes of Lara Stone, Gisele Bündchen and Melanie Griffith, David mentions that the preferred looks of most celebrities are the classics, such as the simple ponytails or loose buns. After being giving the chance to work for some of the world’s most iconic magazines and with the best photographers, David now believes he has been fortunate enough to live out a lot of his ‘dream-come-trues’ and is now considering a more peaceful life, although he still admits “I will always be looking to play with hair!”

“Hair brings one’s self-image into focus”

David Martinez, the renowned Parisian hair stylist, who has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, heads up the two ultra-stylish Blue Brush Hair Studios, here in Doha. David and his Blue Brush Hair Studio are certainly raising the bar and standards when it comes to hair styling and hair care, taking it to the level of international runways, to which David is fully well accustomed.

David reveals his top tips for your tresses

the Cosmetic Dentist Lucky enough to have recognized from a young age that dentistry can provide a hard to find combination of working with your hands, working with your mind, and most importantly, working and interacting with people, Dr. Stella, still to this day feels grateful for the decision she made all those years back to become a dentist. Being a dentist means that Dr. Stella is very hands on – which she finds deeply satisfying - dealing with a very tangible aspect of people's lives where results can be seen, or felt, almost immediately. Dr. Stella explains that “there is nothing quite like seeing a woman holding the mirror, saying ‘I can't stop looking at my teeth!’ or a young man saying ‘You really put your soul into this’”, these moments for the doctor are enough to keep her happy through even the busiest of days.

Dr. Stella's shares the latest info on Cosmetic Dentistry

Q: What is the difference between a dentist that we'd see to have a cavity fixed and a cosmetic dentist? A: The truth is that even everyday restorative dentistry has an inherent cosmetic factor. Having said that, a cosmetic dentist would be more sensitive to colour, shape and position discrepancies and would have more experience on modifying these aspects with minimal or no invasion to tooth structures. A cosmetic dentist will be able to translate your general feeling of “I don't know why, but I don't really like my smile” using treatments like tooth whitening, ceramic veneer placement or even laser gum contouring to correct "gummy smile" issues. Q: What makes tooth whitening challenging? A: All teeth do not whiten in the same degree. Teeth with grayish hue are generally harder to whiten than teeth with a yellowish hue. Some cases can be resistant to tooth whitening- in which case other treatments like ceramic veneers can be effective. Q: Do any foods enhance whitening effects? A: There is some anecdotal evidence on strawberries, apples, celery, carrots, broccolli, pineapples. These have not been tested, but it is safe to assume that their chewy texture will help remove stains from the surface of the teeth. The one simplest ingredient to add to our diet is water. Simply swishing water in your mouth after eating pigment-rich foods will greatly reduce the formation of stains. For same reason, chewing gum is also helpful. Q: What tips do you have for people who want to try whitening at home before seeking professional treatment? A: A dental consultation is strongly recommended before trying any home procedures. What you may think needs whitening, might only be a superficial stain that can be removed with good cleaning and soda polishing a dentist will be able to evaluate the health of gums and teeth.

“A Beautiful Smile: A Key to a Bright and Successful Future.” Dr. Stella Orfanoudaki from Dr Sarah's Specialist Dental Centre, combines her experience in cosmetic dentistry with an impeccable artistic skill to give you a bright, beautiful smile. Marme’s professional proficiency lies within having over eleven years of artistic talent: state-of-the-art techniques, procedures and pure manicure magic! "If a woman's nails aren't done, she's not totally dressed,"

Marme answers some beauty questions regarding nail-art

Q: What is your signature colour? A: Big Apple Red from OPI is my personal favourite and is very popular with our clients. This particular shade of red is both classic and sophisticated. Q: As far as nail shape goes, what is your rule? A: Nails naturally come in a variety of shapes, sizes and texture and each person has nail features that are unique. I use my experience as a nail technician , along with my client’s preferences in a combination of styles that complement my client’s features. Q: What is your best tip for maintaining a manicure so that it doesn’t chip too quickly - if it's not gel polish? A: If possible, wear gloves when doing housework and if you have time, re-apply your favourite top coat every couple of days. Q: Do you always match your toe polish colour with your finger colour? What are the guidelines on that these days. A: These days, there actually isn’t a rule as such, it is down to personal preference. I personally like to mix and match, using dark deep colours for my toes and a lighter colour with a similar tone for my hands, however some clients always insist of having them matching which also looks very elegant. Q: In your opinion, what is the top nail colour for spring? A: For this spring, nude colours are always in and not just a standard beige but there are a whole range of nude tones to suit everyone’s skin colour, with pinkish undertones for a more feminine French look. But the new colours this spring are Rusty Rose and Blushed Pink, Metallic Navy and Mustard Yellow, Sea Foam Green and Teal Blue.

For most ladies, having perfectly preened nails is just as important as the outfit you choose to wear or the heels you choose to walk in. Nail-art has become a burgeoning fashion trend over the last few years, where the colour and design can reflect your personality or current mood. Nails Boutique (by AND Trading) nail technician Marme Quiamco is a highly sought after artist here in Doha.

The Aesthetic Practitioner "Making the world a prettier place, one face at a time.”

Dr. Saed Kaldari, founder of Dr. Kaldari Surgi-Art Centre — one of the largest private practices, is Doha’s most famous and celebrated Aesthetic Practitioner. Dr. Kaldari, talks to ABODE about his achievements and globally recognised work in the field of skincare and rejuvenation. The once-neglected speciality is now in great demand thanks to advances in technology.

Dr. Saed Kaldari who has been trained in Sweden, is one of the most qualified doctors in the field of plastic and cosmetic surgery in the Middle East and is highly recommended by the Qatar health ministry for his professional services. Through the Surgi-Art Centre to which Dr. Kaldari heads up, patients have been able to trust him with their appearance and their health, to which the Dr. Kaldari is able to meet the daily needs of the hundreds who come through his clinic doors.

Dr. Kaldari maintains that within his profession his key focus is to maintain, restore, or enhance a person’s appearance, in as natural a way possible with minimal down time. The doctor comments that he enjoys his line of profession, to be able to offer all types of diagnostic processes designed and customized to meet each individual patient needs, which may include aesthetic services such as facials and microdermabrasion; non-surgical procedures such as laser skincare, injectable and fillers. His high standing clinic is a true reflection of himself; Dr. Kaldari is continually committed to standards of excellence and quality, with the best in leading technology and exceptional skills.

Dr. Kaldari answers questions on maintaining youthful skin

Q: What is the fountain of youth? A: It definitely starts with the necessity of reducing stress. If you don’t reduce stress or get a decent amount of rest and sleep, beauty and health are virtually impossible to attain. Q: What is the biggest barrier to good skin? A: The biggest barrier whether it’s men or women, is confusion. I think it’s the media and advertising. There’s an immense mixture of products out there and if I were an ordinary consumer, I would be like, "Whatever is in the shower soap dish is good enough." Q: What are some quick and easy first steps to developing an anti-aging skincare routine? A: I like to outline the basics of an anti-aging routine by what I call the ABCs of fighting wrinkles. A stands for vitamin A, or retinol-based products that diminish fine lines, boost collagen production and diminish the appearance of pores. B stands for block, or the everyday use of sun protection that’s SPF 30 or above. C stands for a vitamin C. This decreases UV and environmentally induced oxidative damage that lead to wrinkled, sagging or uneven skin. Q: What are some “quick fix” procedures offered at the Surgi-Art Centre to maintain a youthful look without too much downtime? A: Nowadays, we all lead onthe-go lifestyles and Aesthetic practices have advanced to such a degree that most procedures have minimal to no downtime. Procedures like Botox can help with forehead lines and For more information call Dr. Kaldari Surgi-Art Centre on: 4451 5177 wrinkles without ANY downtime. www.surgiartcentre.com

beautyspecial Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian:

The scent of beauty BY HARRIET GYAMFUAH

The man - and nose - behind Printemps Paris’ 150 years anniversary fragrance, Francis Kurkdjian, tells ABODE why he turned his creative talents as an artist to successfully becoming a perfumer.

D

rawing inspiration from the habitual luxury associated with France, combined with a desire to imprint happiness on the memory, Francis Kurkdjian previously created fragrances for Lanvin, Gaultier, Narciso Rodriguez and Dior, so it was a natural progression for him to strike out on his own to create a brand of his own. Now known as one of the most highly regarded noses in the business, for the last 6 years Maison Francis Kurkdjian has been sharing his passion for fragrance with the public, explaining that “I felt it was the right moment for me to jump on the other side of the screen; the same way an actor one day decides to direct and play in his own movie.” Wanting to encapsulate the feelings that come with wearing perfume, Kurkdjian has created an art in ensuring that the perfume wearer gets more from it than just a bottled beauty product. So what best describes the brand Maison Francis Kurkdjian? Simply as its name suggest, it is a house - “a House with soul, history, inhabitants and friends.” The brand is a tribute to Paris, echoing her magic and her spirit of freedom. It marries tradition and cuttingedge technology and is a fragranced approach to life 24/7. Kurkdjian wants his House (his brand) to be dedicated to great joys and simple pleasures. He continues to define the brand saying, “the world of my Maison Francis Kurkdjian expresses what I believe in the terms of luxury and fragrances. Each scent is part of a wardrobe of fragrances to accompany each of us, every day, every night, all year long.” Setting it apart from other fragrance houses, Maison Francis Kurkdjian is the first

66

ABODE April CS6.indd 66

of its kind in the 21st Century to carry the name of its creator and perfumer. There is a real expertise and knowhow in creating fragrances, “from my [Kurkdjian] vision comes a range of products and fragranced accessories: from pure perfume extracts to scented leather goods in exotic leathers“; Kurkdjian in essence is the brand, the head of the creative department, and indeed the creation itself. Maison Francis Kurkdjian as a young house of luxury has already collaborated with iconic brands such as crystal makers Baccarat and Saint Louis, embroiderer Maison Lesage. Luxury is and remains in the details, with none more so than the department store Printemps. For 150 years, Printemps has successfully captured the mood of the moment with fashionable trends. It’s no surprise than that Francis Kurkdjian has been led to create a special anniversary fragrance ‘Le Beau Parfum’, to commemorate such a milestone. He explains that Printemps and Maison Francis Kurkdjian share many values, such as “a sense of beauty, aesthetics, French elegance and refinement. Printemps commissioned my house of fragrances to create a perfume, a tribute to Paris and its impertinent ‘chic’. “ To create the packaging, Maison Francis Kurkdjian turned to the charismatic architecture of the store and Paris itself, which also became the inspiration behind

Printemps Paris Printemps' ann fragrance, Le Beauiversary Par fum

the creation of the fragrance. “Its structure and the monumental dome gave me the desire to create a solar floral fragrance, hemmed with flowers” explains Kurkdjian. As an upmarket fragrant brand, it is evident that Maison Francis Kurkdjian surrounds itself with the talent of designers, craftsmen, photographers, musicians and set designers. Exceptional know-how come together and echo off each other. They are fundamental to the House and are gradually writing a number of exceptional human adventures, in which perfume is, naturally, the hero.

Ask Martyn Psychologist, life coach and consultant Martyn Stewart is ready, willing and extremely able to tackle your anxiety woes. Want to reach out to Martyn with your concerns? Then email: info@relationship-solutions.co.uk Remember, “a problem shared is a problem halved”

Q.

I lack confidence in myself. I don’t apply for jobs because I don’t believe I will get them over anybody else. I say stupid things, I worry that my friends don’t really like me and that I’m ugly. What can I do to stop thinking like this?

A.

Sometimes lacking self-confidence can feel like you’re lost in a tornado; spinning out of control with nothing to hold onto. Many issues with self-confidence have their roots in comparing yourself to others constantly. This can be physically, psychologically or in terms of achievements and possessions. True self-confidence is about accepting who you are. There are no short cuts. Once you have accepted yourself, you must then love who you are. To do this, you first need clarity and a starting point. A supportive network helps and realistic goals are a must. Self-confidence interacts dynamically with many other aspects of the self; including self-belief and self-esteem. There is so much overlap between them, sometimes we don’t even know which is being damaged or built. This is why you may feel confused. It can seriously affect how you perceive your abilities and self-worth depending on the situation, people and the value you place on the circumstances. When you have a starting point the path you walk becomes clearer. A supportive network, helps you realise it is acceptable to make mistakes; it’s ok to ask for help and there are always options to move forward. Realistic goals make you more focussed, patient and productive in building self-belief and esteem so you are less likely to be blown away when faced with future challenging situations.

All my friends are married or engaged. Yet I’m still alone. All I want is to get married and start a family. My friends and relatives tease me about it. On the outside, I smile but inside, I am lonely and hollow. I would marry almost anybody now.

A.

To give and receive love is one of the greatest experiences, so I understand how you feel. The fact that everybody around you seems to be experiencing the very thing you desire the most amplifies your emotions. However, the only thing I can urge upon you at this time is patience. From what you say, I am sure that you want a long-lasting marriage, not just a wedding; a family, not just a baby. So rushing into this decision is the worst thing you can possibly do. Too many people do this when they become emotionally compromised. They see the joy of others and understandably envision it for themselves. When you are irrationally driven by feeling lonely and the perception of others’ happiness, your decisions are less likely to be competent. You don’t want to resent your life choices. The best relationships are built on maturity, emotional growth and respect. Not loneliness, envy or perceived pressure from peers. We all want the important things in life right now. Unfortunately, some of us have to wait a little longer than others in order to avoid disappointment. However, remain clear in your thinking. If you understand there is no rush or need to settle for less, you will not be disappointed in the long-run.

Q.

As long as I can remember, if someone says, or does, something I don’t like I feel it is a personal criticism. I get angry whether it is my friends, partner or work colleagues. It’s so hard for me to let go, I can hold silly grudges for years. How do I stop?

A.

Getting upset or angry from time to time is not unusual for any of us. We’ve all had our feelings hurt. However, letting negative emotions and grudges consistently fill up inside you and dominate your responses is not good at all. Constantly replaying these incidents will lead you to perceive future situations in the same negative way. Squeezing them all in clutters your mind and emotional space; you become easily frustrated and react negatively, even to the smallest provocations. You must learn to release this negative emotion. Don’t rush, little by little is best. Criticisms do not have to be taken negatively. Grudges do not have to be avenged or maintained. You can’t change the past. Holding onto these emotions only makes you bitter. The other person probably doesn’t even realise (or care). Also, you must change your view of future situations. Hoarding negative emotions forces you to live in the past. You struggle to process new information productively. You’ll struggle to deal effectively with the present unless you find a way to let things pass through you - not into you. We are all capable of change, it’s time for you to start.

Being one of the hardest jobs a woman can ever take, we often overlook all the hardships and sacrifices a MOM is willing to give for her children and family. In celebration of Mother’s Day last month, 4U in partnership with ABODE, Grand Hyatt, Hilton and B/Attitude joined together in rewarding the best person in our lives – our MOMs. During the celebration, 4U set up photobooths inside its stores in City Center and Royal Plaza to capture great moments of mommies and some with their children that hoped to create lasting memories as each day flies so quickly. With this campaign, souvenir photos were given to participants that would remind them of the beauty of motherhood. Lucky mommies were also randomly drawn to win fabulous gifts from 4U and its partners like a weekend stay at a grand suite at Grand Hyatt, dinner or lunch buffet at Hilton and spa treatments at B/Attitude. Grand prize winner Ms. Sandra Yasin, however also took home a brand new ipad air for her daughter and an exclusive photoshoot with Abode at the Hilton Hotel.

ABSOLUTELY Fabulous

Can you really eat your way to a more beautiful you? Yes, you can. Here’s how. By Dawn Gibson

While some supermodels are so genetically blessed they look amazing on a diet of cigarettes and chocolate, most of us are living proof that you are what you eat. This doesn’t mean you need to turn into a health food fanatic to look good, though. Add some of these super-foods to your diet to start seeing a difference.

GLOWING SKIN

Splurging on the latest must-have moisturizer always feels good, but it doesn’t make much sense if you’re not feeding your skin right from the inside. To maintain a youthful, dewy complexion, you need plenty of antioxidants, which help protect skin from cellular damage that leads to dullness, wrinkles and age spots. Strong antioxidants are found in most fruit and vegetables, so make sure you are getting a diverse mix in your diet. For example, Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that is wonderful for the skin as well as the immune system. Berries are an excellent source, so add some raspberries, blueberries, strawberries or blackberries on to the weekly shopping list. Veggies brimming with antioxidants include sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, kale and spinach.

The best skin diet is one that involves eating vegetables of different colours for every meal along with a green juice 74

A Beauty Diet: cleanse, nourish and beautify by utilizing the benefits of a fresh-food diet

LUSCIOUS LOCKS AND NAILS

Both hair and nails are made from the same substance, the protein keratin, so both benefit from a diet that is high in the right sources of protein. Lean red meat, lean chicken and eggs are all good options.

FOREVER YOUNG

Selenium is an antioxidant that plays a big role in the ageing process, with studies showing that it may help protect the body against not only skin cancer but also the ageing effects of sun damage. Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, oysters and tuna are good sources.

Keeping your digestion healthy in general is very important, because a digestive system that doesn’t work effectively will not properly absorb the nutrients you need to promote beautiful skin, hair and nails. Aim to increase your intake of whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat bread and porridge. Low fat yoghurt can also be of benefit, especially if you suffer from digestion problems.

Another essential nutrient is magnesium, which prevents hair loss in particular. Almonds are the super- food you need to grow amazing hair and nails, as they are a source of both protein and magnesium. Other magnesium rich foods include leafy green vegetables and soy beans. You should also make sure you are consuming two to three servings a day of low-fat dairy products as the calcium they contain is an important building block for strong, healthy hair and nails. One cup of low-fat milk or yoghurt equals one serving.

Also, drinking plenty of water is just as important to your beauty routine as your overall health , as even low levels of dehydration can make you look tired and add years to your appearance.

A Tiny Powder Room

with BIG, Bold Style! By: Suzy Cacic, Interior Designer, BetterDecoratingBible.com Photos by: Anna Forkum, Ofer Wolbeger, Michael Whaley, Jeff Herr

Nothing makes guests feel more welcome than a stylish powder room. Here are some of our favourite spring decorating ideas and design tips. Suzy Cacic

2

Turn a Dresser into a Vanity If you have an old but sturdy wood dresser lying around then put it to good use and turn it into a bathroom vanity! There are tons of vanity options out there although they can be super pricey and low quality. A solid wood dresser can easily be repurposed as a vanity with some basic carpentry skills and in the end save you tons of money.

3 1

Layer on the Mirrors Add depth to your small powder room by covering the whole wall behind the vanity in mirror and then layering a framed mirror over that! This bathroom looks especially beautiful since there is also sconce lighting installed on the mirror which ups the look from glam to super-glam!

Install a Statement Sink

Adding a unique sink can create powder room wonders and double as big time artwork. This one-of-a-kind wall mounted sink looks like an antique crown and makes a jaw-dropping centerpiece. There is really no need for wall art in this space as the sink and mirror do all the talking!

84

ABODE April CS6.indd 84

3/26/15 11:14 AM

4

Try Oversized Wallpaper! If you’ve even wanted to try crazy bold wallpaper, now is your time to experiment! A small space like a powder room has limited furniture, which means psychedelic wallpaper can take center stage with little or no competition. This way you don’t have to worry about your space looking like a mismatching mess!

5

Add a High Gloss Wall Paint Sometimes flat colours can get really uninspiring and boring! Adding a high gloss lacquer to any wall colour makes it look instantly high-class and well dressed. Light bounces off glossy walls making your small space look brighter and in return, bigger!

6

Paint Your Ceiling Black

7

Painting your powder room’s ceiling a contrasting black is an easy way to add a lot of drama to a tiny room! Black ceilings make your room more sophisticated then ever and even make your space look higher and wider. You can add matching accessories like a black-framed mirror and hand towels to tie your whole new look together.

Hang a Chandelier!

Chandeliers shouldn’t only be saved for the dining room; in fact they can add huge panache and a romantic style to your powder room. A bigger sized chandelier can actually enhance a small space, but make sure not to hang it too low – you can create a feeling of claustrophobia.

Early Spanish explorers called it coco, which means "monkey face" because the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resemble the head and face of a monkey. Nucifera means "nut-bearing". The coconut provides a nutritious source of meat, juice, milk, and oil that has fed and nourished populations around the world for generations.

The Beauty of Boracay By Harriet Gyamfuah

If you really want to see a piece of heaven right here on Earth, then you must visit Boracay, Philippines. The tiny island is renowned for its breathtaking white sandy beaches and dotted with beautiful palms, it’s a perfect destination for a honeymoon or for those who just want to get away from it all and find tranquility. Take in the never ending beauty that surrounds you.

W

hat is it about Boracay that makes the Filipino community ever SO proud?" On the island of Boracay, at White Beach, you’ll find the perfect breeze, glittering sun, mesmerising sunsets and an endless sapphire sea. It could be all these factors that draw bountiful amounts of tourists and locals alike to its shores, OR it may be the tempting allure of cocktail parties which run from early afternoon until the early hours of the morning! All in all, the (contagiously) laid back aura that is in the Boracay air does certainly seduce and easily entice its visitors to smile, keep smiling and leave smiling. Touted as one of the Philippines’ premier tourist destination, Boracay is a dumbbellshaped island located on the north

BBQ at D'Mall

western end of Panay Island that is only seven kilometers long and one kilometer wide at its narrowest tip. The terrain of this 1,083 hectare-island is fairly flat with its highest point at a mere 100 meters, with beaches fringed with coconut trees, tropical palms and flowering plants, its hills covered with coconut grove, lush vegetation of shrubs, wild vines, and trees barely camouflaging caves inhabited by bats. Quite simply Boracay is definitely the "crown jewel" of the 7,107 islands of the

Seafood Delights

Philippines. No wonder it is highly ranked as one of the most breathtaking wedding and honeymoon destinations. Newlyweds see this place as a perfect site to enjoy each other’s company and to share in the many tropical activities the island has to offer. “There is just so much to see, do and eat” People from all walks of life continue to put Boracay at the top of their vacation list because there is just so much to see,

then it is easily as enjoyable to find a permanent spot on one of the impressive beaches, sip on an umbrella topped drink, and just take in the lively nightlife from a distance. With that drink in hand, there is nothing quite like delighting in the local delicacies such as ulalo, Menudo, Afritada, KareKare, and the world-famous Adobo. And since you are right in the heart of the Aklan Ocean, a variety of seafood dishes consists within the local cuisine. Grilled diwal shellfish, lobsters, clams, tuna and other fish meats, oysters, prawns – name it, Boracay has it. One thing however that is a must to try is the street food. Between each station on the island, you can find little stalls set up during the late afternoon till dawn grilling chori (chorizo) and longga (sausage) burgers; admittedly, they are not the healthiest options but delicious, filling and cheap!

Beach Entertainment

and with the beaches being the main attraction, there are several activities for the water enthusiasts. Opt to see the marine life in the shallower part of the water by snorkelling or see the more vivid marine life up close and personal by scuba diving. Surfing is another popular activity to do on the island. Amazingly colourful sails rise up to the top of the waters as holiday makers explore and feel the gush of wind against their shoulders. For the more courageous and adventurous types,

try cliff diving, which will be the ultimate thrill.

Whatever you do, don’t be afraid to explore the island; just the small size of Boracay would make it difficult to get lost in, but the friendly helpfulness of the people makes it almost impossible. No matter where you end up, you will at most be only a few hours away from where you started.

Then undeniably there are the vacationers and of course newlyweds, who just want to relax, unwind, and revitalize, so boat (island hopping) tours are great way to see the island and its glorious beaches, during the day or at sunset. The nightlife is an added bonus, as the island comes to life when the sun sets, and often, until dawn. If you are not one for bar-crawling

Boracay is certainly a place Filipinos can go and be proud...they can watch as the stunning beauty of their country lights up the faces of travellers from all over the world. No wonder Travel + Leisure awarded Boracay "Best Island In The World" in 2012, and with no shortage of these recognitions and awards, Boracay's beauty is left to the eyes of the traveller.

A West Bay Gem Mövenpick Hotel West Bay Doha By Chet Tibayan

One of the reasons we love Mövenpick Hotel West Bay is that it is one of the popular melting pots here in Doha.

M

övenpick Hotel West Bay Doha is a freshly renovated hotel with a new name (formerly Mövenpick Tower & Suites Doha) – that prides itself on personalized and upscale service, catering to all types of guests. With major changes in the property and completed renovation and refurbishment projects in its lobby, restaurants and rooms over the past two years, the product is fresh, new and continues to place the hotel as a top business hotel in Doha.

People from all over the world choose to stay here. Due to their usual high occupancy, we had to wait quite a while for our turn. And although they have lots of guests to entertain, the hotel and staff always exceed our expectations and make everyone feel at home.

THE ROOM

Chic, fashionable and up-to-date are just some of the words we would use to describe the Deluxe Rooms at Mövenpick Hotel West Bay. We absolutely loved the interior- they are some of the top rooms in the country. The colours used are inviting and warm, and radiate comfort and elegance. The majority of the rooms have incredible views of the Arabian Gulf and West Bay, and that is always an added plus!

ForKnife

Located on the first floor, ForKnife is the hotel’s all day dining restaurant. It is also home to Mövenpick Hotel West Bay’s Friday Brunch and Speciality Nights; Mexican on Wednesday evenings and Indian on Thursdays. The selection of food on the buffet is an international mix, offering a variety of appetizers, a full salad bar, a selection of seafood, live cooking stations and more.

BAY VIEW 26 WELLNESS CENTRE

Located on the 26th floor, the hotel’s spa became our family’s haven, thanks to the indoor pool and children’s play area. The spa’s treatment rooms are also located there, where you can book a relaxing massage or a rejuvenating facial. Of Nigeria to Qatar By Mary Nisansala Jayaweera

Photography Jessie Palanca

The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a land that pulsates with abundant life. The nation’s nature and culture is dressed in diversity. During a tête-à-tête with ABODE, His Excellency Shuaibu Adamu AhmedAmbassador of Nigeria to Qatar revealed Nigeria’s inner beauty.

one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. Thereafter schooling for the children of our home-based staff; we came in April which was already far into the admission calendar process for schools in Qatar. We also had to contend with the weather! But by the time we arrived, the host authorities were very supportive and cooperative that within 6 months all these challenges were overcome. We came in at the beginning of April but we had the official opening of the chancery building by June 22nd of the same year.

Q. As the first resident Ambassador to represent Nigeria in Qatar, what challenges were you faced with initially? Q. How has your stay in Qatar been, A. It is a challenging task to establish a new thus far? mission. The first challenge was finding A. Q. What are your plans to improve relations between Nigeria and Qatar? A. The relationship between Nigeria and Qatar are mutually beneficial. Qatar for both political and economical reasons is extremely important to the world now. Economically they are probably the largest foreign investors around the world today. It is said that Africa is the next economic frontier; six of the ten fastest growing economies of the world are in Africa. You cannot go to Africa without going to Nigeria which is the largest economy in the Continent. We are trying to develop a mutual bi-lateral and multi-lateral relationship between the two countries. Qatar supported Nigeria to obtain Presidency of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Presidency of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) which was held here in Doha in December 2014. We have been working together very closely over the past three years negotiating and initiating four agreements so far; the Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation Agreement, the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments, the Double

Taxation Agreement and the Bi-Lateral Investment Agreement; previously Qatar used to have only one daily flight to Lagos in Nigeria. We have recently added three additional daily slots-one to Abuja, Kano and Enugu, apart from the flight to Lagos. We also gave cargo rights to Nigeria for the first time. We are now trying to work on the Labour Agreement and Cultural Cooperation between the two countries. Q. What is Nigeria most famous for? A. Nigerian music is quite unique, we’ve had some outstanding musicians such as Fela Kuti and now bands such as D’banj, Psquare are winning the MTV Awards and World Awards. Then of course movies; Nigeria has the 3rd largest movie industry in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood. It is called Nollywood and is enjoyed across the Continent of Africa and also by the African Diasporas all over the world. Moreover, the literary works of authors such as Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe and a couple of other youngsters. They convey a lot of original stories which are African in nature talking about the African way of life. In these three areas I think Nigeria is at the forefront. We are doing well in sports too.

Q. Describe your relationship with the Nigerian community in Qatar. A. There are close to 7,000 Nigerians living in Qatar and the relationship between the Embassy and the Nigerian community has been extremely cordial. They have an umbrella organization called NIDO, Nigerians in Diaspora Organization which is very active and associate well with the Embassy. Of course for Nigerians in Qatar, the Embassy is like their second home where they are free to come in at any time.

Nigerians have problems with their sponsors, we try to intervene and there are some who lose employment, even though it is not our responsibility to find them jobs we still intervene to find replacements for such individuals. Moreover, we invite the Nigerian community to the Embassy to celebrate National Day and the Embassy is invited to participate in cultural activities organized by NIDO.

Q. What is your message to the Nigerian community? A. We tell Nigerians who have settled here Q. How does the Embassy look into the that Qatar is their second home. IlovewhatIdo Hamad Al Amari

The Joker of the Arabian Pack By Sarah Linklett

Qatari funny man Hamad Al Amari is not one to shy away from the spotlight. The Stand Up comedian's humour is always taken to new heights as he delivers his jokes through his very amusing – and initially, bewildering, Irish accent. You were brought up in Dublin and Doha – how do they compare? At the age of 16 when I came back to Doha from Dublin, the first thing I realized was that summer had a different meaning altogether. Playing football on the grass in Ireland is not the same as playing it on sand in Doha! Whilst both countries have a respect for society, Qatar’s culture taught me greater discipline. I have learnt to be loyal, truthful and have a general respect for people from both Qatar and Ireland. How did your upbringing help you to become the person you are today? I am the person I am today because of so many different things, the accents I do are because I was exposed to them and I embrace them. I learnt to love different cultures and people and I am still hungry for more. My mother had a colossal impact on me and my father was my idol, the man I aspired to be. It’s been said you are hilarious on and off the stage. Are you serious some of the time? I think people who say that are just being nice. As much as I would like

to be smiley and happy all the time, life sometimes puts tears in your eyes and rage in your heart, but I think I am a passionate person. Head screwed on and on a mission to succeed.

I am an ambassador for the National Cancer Program, volunteering with Injaz Qatar to give courses. I have also worked with iloveqatar.net on many initiatives including promoting diversity.

What do you especially love about Stand Up? It is a direct communication with your audience, there is very little room for misinterpretation, they see everything, and they feel the stories being told. When it goes really well, I feel like I have earned the right to go home and do absolutely nothing!

What are your hopes for the future for yourself and for comedy in Qatar? I hope to own and manage a permanent venue and push the comedy scene to new levels. My biggest hope for the future is to keep creating content, keep performing and tour the world. I have also written a couple of short scripts, which I would like to produce and direct.

You have said that humour brings communities together. How does that happen? The shows in Qatar have a very culturally diverse audience which makes my part that much harder. When they are all in the same room laughing at the same stories it proves that laughter does not know race or ethnicity - it is a basic human instinct. If you can make someone laugh you have tapped into their soul. Please tell us about your work as an ambassador for children and charities.

ow did the band form? The band was formed in 2010 with original members Riz, Ryan, Mike and Moe who met on Qatar Living as a group of expats sharing a common passion for playing hard rock music. The band made their debut at the Harley Riders Convention at the Doha Marriott in 2011 and soon started playing several private parties and live gigs around Doha’s music venues such as the Admirals Club and Rugby Club. Several line-up changes followed thereafter with Riz remaining as the original member and the current line-up has been together since 2013, with Pepin on drums being the latest addition to the band this year. How do you feel your band is unique from other bands here in Doha? We are five musicians from five different nationalities across different continents, which alone make us unique and truly representative of the diversity of expats here in Qatar. We are united however by one common mission - to deliver the “R” back into the Rock music here! The Art of Happiness ABODE recently had a sit down with artist Sue Omar. Speaking about all things art, happiness and the people at the very heart of her artistic world. By Rodger Gillen PHOTOGRAPHY BY NABIL EL ANDARI

A

s a youngster Sue always had an interest in the art world. Something she freely admits came from outside her family. “I’m not sure how I became an artist really; none of my family have a real creative streak. One thing I do know is that as a child I was very shy, and that when I was painting it was a fantastic way of expressing my feelings.” So from a young age Sue was working in her own artistic bubble, creating impromptu galleries to show off her work. “I remember as a kid I used to post up my pictures on my wall and charge my friends and my brothers to come in and see my work. They would all have to line up outside my room and they would have to pay!”

After being raised in Bristol, England Sue made the move over to Qatar in 1996 the place she sincerely considers home. “My time here has gone so quickly. Qatar has developed as a nation, so fast. I really enjoy that they are investing in art and museums, trying to interest a whole new range of people.” Sue has also taken advantage of the growing art scene in Qatar and recently exhibited and sold her work at the MIA Park art bazzar. “I loved showing my work of to a brand new audience; everyone seemed to enjoy my work. Which is hugely rewarding for me, it makes it worthwhile,” she admits. Talking to Sue, it’s clear that she has a relaxed cheery demeanor, something which she tries to implement within her own work. “I am a naturally happy person, and I just adore using

bright colours in my work. I tend to look at everything that I do from a positive angle I think that is reflected in the greens and blues that I tend to use.” People and patterns are at the very centre of what Sue creates, a style which she is constantly developing as an artist. “I don’t think I will find a niche in what I do at the moment I am looking to always push my creative boundaries. However, for now I like figurative abstract work. People are so enriching, and so I want to push an almost motivational message in my work.” African culture has also been an area of experimentation for Sue, who is of Sudanese parentage. “Recently I have been looking back to my own background

and moved to using African figures and patterns in my work, I enjoy the vibrant images in African art, and something I will be using more in the future.” Happiness, enjoyment and people are at the very centre of this talented artist’s world. Sue concludes by saying, “I just want use my art to tell everyone that life isn’t really that bad, let us look around us so to appreciate what we have.”

artfeature In Conversation With

An Artist Photography by Roy Peters

As part of the British Festival Qatar 2015, Doha was enthusiastically introduced to the works of Scottish artist and writer David Batchelor through his "Flatlands Remix" Exhibition. He speaks exclusively to ABODE about his life, art and excitement of visiting the region.

Q. Where and when did your career in the arts begin? A. I knew when I was a teenager at secondary school that I wanted to work with art but it took me a long time to figure out how and in what ways. It has been forty years now and at times it has been very uncertain. But I wouldn’t change that. Q. What do you love most about being an artist and writer? A. Every day I get to think about and do the things that matter most to me. In that I am very fortunate. Q. How did you become involved in the British Festival 2015? A. I was invited by the British Council in London to discuss making an exhibition of my work that could travel in the region.

Q. How do you feel about your first exhibition in the Gulf? A. It is always hugely interesting to travel to new cities in different countries and to see how things work and how they differ from what you are used to and expect. I always find something that sticks in my mind and finds its way into my work. I’m sure the Gulf will be no different. Q. Your exhibition Flatlands Remix at VCUQ is so unique, what can you tell us about it? A. Flatlands Remix is the first and only exhibition I have made in which nearly all the work is 2-D. Most of my other projects and exhibitions have consisted mainly of three-dimensional forms. Even though I make drawings all the time I didn’t begin to exhibit them until quite recently. The

Colour Chart paintings derive directly from some of those drawings. The paintings made me think there might be enough work for an exhibition. Q. What should the public know before they come to your exhibition? A. Almost all of my work is concerned with colour – either painted colour, or illuminated elements like neon or fluorescent lights and colourful plastic objects and materials. The work is really an invitation to look more closely at the colours in the city – at where they are and what they are made from and how they affect the experience of the city. So look out for colour. Q. Most of your work relates to a long term interest in colour and urbanism, why is that? A. The subject chose me. I never planned to work with colour but one day in 1992 I made a small brightly coloured construction and the more I worked on it and thought about colour the more interesting it became. And that has never changed. At the same time I began to notice a resistance to vivid colour in the West – I called it ‘chromphobia’ – and I wanted to investigate that and do something about it. Q. What would you most like to do during your visit to Qatar? A. I really want to see the Museum of Islamic Art and the Arab Museum of Modern Art. I’d also like to see the desert – we don’t have any deserts in the UK. Q. Any tips for aspiring artists? A. Keep going, keep going, keep going. The British Festival 2015 Will run until April 5th. The David Batchelor Flatlands Remix exhibition will take place at the Virginia Commonwealth University Gallery until April 21st.

Wheels Master of Ceremony commented: “While supercars and ultra-luxury cars battle for top honours on our expansive boulevards; don’t forget that the real fight takes place in congested streets, shopping mall car parks and on school run mornings in crossovers and little compacts. In one of the most closely-matched and cutthroat segments, the little Renault came out tops and surprised us all by offering easily the most value for money in a clever, practical package that can’t be ignored.” For more information visit www.renault-me.com

The Delightful Crossover Everyone is talking about the Captur the two toned new comer from Renault! By Deliah Roque

I

n the flesh this supermini, funky yet stylish looker has a far more spacious interior and a raised ride height for excellent visibility. Perfect for driving in town, when combined with the car's light controls. Driving in Doha is made easy with this soulful treat!

On the inside, I was most impressed with its easy to use and access touch screen centre consol, loaded with fun functional apps to keep you up to date. With simple and clear indicators for all the vehicle’s diagnostics and access to your favourite radio stations, emails and phone book! The dash plastics are finished in a modern

dimple pattern to add to its charm. There When considering your purchase Renault offers 24 exterior colour combinations are some practical cubby holes in the for the Captur along with three matching centre console to prop up your gadgets, water bottle, coffee tumbler, a journal and interior and exterior trim packs, called so much more. Perfect for the person on ‘Arizona’, ‘Miami’ and ‘Manhattan’. There are three different roof decals. Choose the go! your favourite colour combination to fit your personality. Renault offers the Captur with its new, sweet and punchy small petrol turbo The Captur is very much a style and engine, which drives through a six-speed lifestyle statement. This crossover has my dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The engine is a good match for the company’s vote! new dual-clutch ’box, which was almost complete viceless unless you stamped on the accelerator.
