BEHIND THE SCENES

Welcome

We had a great time with our little ones this issue. They were an awww-some bunch to shoot and definitely had their game face on! ABODE had a fun sunny day filled with giggles and thanks to their lovely moms too!

FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

DEAR READERS,

I

hope you all enjoyed the festivities around town for Eid! The Holy Month has given a new sense of inspiration to work harder and become better human beings. We at ABODE are very pleased to bring you the August issue themed around kids and activities for your little ones. We welcome you into this issue with an interview from the sensational Cara Delevingne, model turned actress, who also has an amazing voice and has taken the world by storm. We understand that summer in these parts of the world can get dull for your children. But, fear not! We have plenty of ideas for keeping kids entertained in the final part of the summer holidays. One issue of concern to all parents these days is how children know their way around an iPad or a tablet faster than their way around the park. In a special feature, we look at the impact of touch-screen technology on children. Also, we give you the Healthy Lunch Box, where we provide some fresh ideas for making life easier and fun, as well as nutritious. Moving away from the kids to concentrate on you, the beauty section boasts of expert advice for skin treatments available in Doha. As well, we have a report direct from Paris on the Armani Prive haute couture autumn-winter collection 15/16, which absolutely sizzled on the runway!

To thoroughly enjoy the last few weeks of summer, pocket your ABODE issue for a blissful read on your journeys or for that quality me-time on your patio! We hope you’ll enjoy the issue as much as we did making it! Have a great rest of the summer!

We also explored the cultural, natural and artistic sides of marvelous Malta and its sister islands this month. If you are interested in the best of both worlds of adventure and relaxation, the hospitality of this country will leave you feeling high on life!

The Fendi Baguette; A History By annabel rooney

F

ounded in Italy in 1925 by Edoardo and Adele Fendi, the house of Fendi was primarily a fur and leather shop based in Via del Plebiscito, Rome. However, by 1946, Edoardo and Adele’s five daughters, Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla & Alda joined the company, bringing with them a keen sense of fashion and an enthusiasm that would soon drive Fendi into the iconic status it has today.

This year marks Fendi’s 90th birthday, and to celebrate, we’re taking you on a retrospective journey to 1925, sketching out Fendi’s humble beginnings and the birth of the iconic ‘Baguette’.

The first of many Fendi atelier’s was opened in 1964 in Via Bogognona, Rome, a street renowned for its artisans, and thrived as creators of exquisite pieces of clothing, fur and accessories. It was then when, in 1965, Karl Lagerfeld joined the business, that the Fendi double FF logo was born. Karl went on to display Fendi’s first ready-to-wear fur collection in 1969, reshaping the way the fabric was worn and at the same time, revolutionising fur as a stylish, wearable must have.

Fendi Baguettes

bags make your life more “ Luxury pleasant, make you dream, give you confidence, and show your neighbours you’re doing well.

Karl Lagerfeld

In 1994, Silvia Fendi had the idea of creating a chic mini bag, small enough to fit under the arm like a baguette, and hence, the ‘baguette’ was born, kickstarting the ‘IT bag’ phenomenon of the 1990s. Every celebrity, actress, model and socialite was seen with a baguette tucked elegantly under her arm, with Fendi’s fur draped lavishly over the other. The baguette has slowly evolved into lusted-after arm candy, going from the muted brown and black color palettes of the 90’s, to the funky hues of blue and green in the 2000’s and now in 2015, it features a very naughty looking micro ‘monster’. For 11 years, the baguette has been a sensation, with other brands quickly following suit designing similar shaped bags, and it continues to sell out 3 months before its release into its stores, often followed by 1 month waiting lists. Fendi has grown from a humble store in Rome to 197 stores worldwide, concept fashion shows in Paris, London, New York and Milan, ad campaigns featuring world renowned photographers and top models, all with no intention of slowing down. Now, on its 90th anniversary, ABODE would like to wish Fendi a very happy birthday!

ECCENTRICITY AT ITS CORE When excess becomes elegance, colours are woven together, blending and shading into each other. Malachite green, lapis lazuli blue, amethyst purple and tourmaline green are splashed on a hot pink background with contrasting black elements. Swarovski crystals are skillfully embroidered onto garments to create countless nuances for one-ofa-kind masterpieces. Nothing is what it seems: silk thread, wool and trimmed chenille are made into a feather-effect finish called plumage. Lurex details run through the fabrics to add an extra touch of shimmer. Voluminous dresses burst in on the scene, like lights on a dark night. Tinged with a thousand shades, close-fitting jackets emphasize the shoulders, and are balanced by black velvet trousers that flare slightly at the ankle. Everything as a drawing.

I wouldn't be acting in these films if it hadn't been for the attention that modelling has given me just the way I wouldn't have had the kind of career I've had as a model if it hadn't been for social media. I'm glad to be able to get into acting in a serious way because that's always been my first love. I love being able to throw myself into different characters and feel free from my own worries and doubts. Q: Do you remember your first experience as an actress? CD: I remember the first time I was onstage. It was a Christmas jazz musical. I was Mary and I had a really long solo. And I just loved causing a reaction, smiling, laughing or crying. It made me feel alive. From that day, I was like, "I want to entertain people." Acting is something I’ve always tried to do since I was four. I also want to be able to travel and explore the world as much as I can and learn about different cultures and understand more. Q: You seem to be blessed with a natural swagger and sense of playfulness about life. Where do you get that from? CD: When I was growing up I saw that life is very precious and that we shouldn't waste any time. I like the feeling of being able to learn and do as much as I can as fast I can because I have a lot of ambition and I want to accomplish a lot in life.

Bottega Veneta

Designer Tomas Maier debuted his spring/ summer 2016 Bottega Veneta collection during the latest Milan Men's Fashion Week. Maier featured parkas, fitted pants, plush blouses and more.

For the more refined man, signature tailored suits and overcoats remain staples for the brand.

It looks as if Maier's communing with nature will have a healthy benefit on a number of men's wardrobes next summer.Â

The runway featured this season's trend of wearing socks and sandals — which was once voted the worst fashion faux pas.

Different outdoor activities were translated by the designer into relaxed elegant pieces

Tomas Maier moved away from the sophisticated urban and offered men a selection of clothing inspired by the beauty of the outdoors. "I liked this idea of hiking, being in the garden, and getting in touch with nature" said Maier after the show.

The ultimate de-stress treatment:

Heated Bamboo Massage By Marisela Paesano

Bamboo rods are used to roll and knead the soft tissue. It combines the traditional benefits of massage along with the comforting quality of heat that creates the extreme sense of relaxation and well-being. You will be revitalized as the massage melts away tension, leaving your body recharged with a balanced equilibrium. Massage therapy is more than relaxing me-time. Studies continue to prove the physical and emotional benefits of even a single massage therapy session. Massage has been shown to decrease cortisol in the body. This allows the body to enter a relaxing rest−and−recovery mode− an effect that lingers long after the massage is over. In fact, massage triggers a host of brain chemistry responses that can result in lasting feelings of relaxation, lowered stress and improved mood. After a hectic production week for our magazine, an invigorating body treatment to recharge my tired mind and body was a must, so I hit the eforea Spa at Hilton Doha Hotel for a blissful day of unadulterated me-time. When I arrived I explained to our lovely therapist Maria I wanted serious deep tissue bodywork to release all the tension accumulated in my body, especially on my neck and lower back. She recommended that I experience the eforea Signature Body Repair and De-Stress Face Treatment. So it was time for my well-deserved massage.

The ultimate de-stress treatment: First warm bamboo was rolled slowly and firmly over my back and legs to release tight muscles; this was followed by the most effective deep muscle massage technique, which removed tension held in my back, shoulders and neck, sending my body into the deepest sense of euphoria. After that, all stress disappeared with the full-body relaxing massage, which included a deep head and scalp massage, followed by a face cleanse, scrub and moisturizing. This ultimate de-stress treatment left me feeling and looking totally relaxed!! eforea Spa at Hilton Doha Hotel Diplomatic Street, West Bay Area Signature Body Repair & De-stress Face Treatment 90mins; QR 750 Spa Hours of Operation: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. To book a treatment, call 4423 3441 or email doha.spa@hilton.com

Beauty Q&A Answers to the everyday beauty questions you always wanted to ask. BY ANA SI SABER - LPG EndermoSpa & Beauty Center INSTAGRAM - @ANASISABER

Our star expert of the month, Ana Si Saber gives you answers to questions you've had all the while about how to treat your skin right and what treatments to undergo to get your skin looking younger and refreshed! Ladies, the time is NOW! from Joanna

am very skinny, but I have Q.Icellulite on my thighs. How can I reduce this?

A.

Cellulite, a true nightmare for some, affects nearly 90% of all women! And as if that weren't enough, cellulite areas remain totally unaffected by even the strictest diets and physical exercise. We recommend the LPG Lipo massage anti - cellulite treatment. It is not only reserved for overweight women but also thin women with a hormonal disorder or bad blood circulation. LPG's mechanical ROLL stimulation can soften tissue and de-compartmentalize fatty cells activating blood circulation. Result: The skin is smoother and softer, and cellulite gradually and permanently disappears.

Like all treatments nothing lasts forever! Keep the physical activity going, eat healthy and repeat LPG at least once a month to maintain the results after the treatments.

A.

A 100% natural, anti-aging ENDERMOLIFT technique by LPG for men and women of all ages is a technique that replenishes the skin and attenuates the signs of aging. For early wrinkles we recommend the Biologique Recherche, the collagen and elastin serum along with Elastine Marine Cream to prevent/treat early wrinkles which will make your face looking radiant and rejuvenated and also keeps the skin hydrated. Start always by cleansing the skin with "LAIT UV" the fresh cleanser suitable for all skin types. The use of serums at night time and (to let the skin breath) and creams for the day time to protect the skin from multi external aggression is advised.

KEEPING FIT IN

PREGNANCY When you’ve got a baby on board, should YOU PUT YOUR FEET UP or put them on the treadmill? By Lynsey Riach

T

his year I have had the pleasure of being pampered and pregnant for the very first time and I’m happy to report both baby and myself are surviving the long hot Qatar summer and in just a few weeks time my husband and I will finally meet our little bundle of joy! During my pregnancy I was of course asked on a regular basis how I felt and most of the time my answer was fantastic! I’ve been one of those women other women hate – pregnancy has been very kind to me. I’ve felt and looked great throughout, with very few side effects, a neat bump and not a gallon a day of ice cream sized weight gain.

Throughout the days and weeks as a pregnant person, I questioned why I felt this way – was it the fact I was always fit and healthy beforehand and it carried me through? Was it my marathon naps or my healthy diet? I say healthy but I still have at times overindulged in the practice of ‘eating for two’. Whatever the reason, one constant has remained during my time pregnant - I have listened to my body. As a Yoga instructor, I know my physical and mental limitations quite well. During each trimester I felt different – tired in the first, full of energy in the second and now in my third trimester a mixture of the former. My body has become used to my 10kg weight gain as each day I have walked 10kms, I have practiced Yoga and swam lengths of my sun-drenched swimming pool. All of this has given me strength and energy with stamina and gratitude to be able to move my body so well whilst making a human. But I’ve listened to it. I haven’t pushed myself, I haven’t taken it too easy either but how do we know the correct balance? When I think back to the early days when pregnancy was new and my tiny baby was the size of an appleseed (not anymore!) I remember feeling somewhat petrified to do anything, scared to move my limbs the way I have for over three decades. And

this I learned is totally normal. When pregnancy is new to us we cherish it, we take care of it like we take care of our baby growing inside so of course it’s natural to not wish to jeopardize that in any way or cause harm. Science however says otherwise. It has been proven that women who exercise during pregnancy increase their chances of an easier, more natural labor. Translation: Pilates hurts, but you'll thank yourself later (and your body will bounce back more quickly). So if you really want a natural birth, it might be time to hit the gym. According to the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, women who exercise during pregnancy are 20% less likely to have a Cesarean section, which could be because staying in shape keeps your newborn from being born too large for a safe natural delivery. With this information it may surprise you to learn that only about 15% of pregnant women in the U.S. are meeting the recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day on most days of the week. This may be because many pregnant ladies are still nervous that exercising will hinder the growth of their infant but The University of Alberta recently published a study that stated prenatal exercise reduced the odds of having a large newborn by 31% without increasing the risk of having a small newborn.

So why sweat it? The more active and fit you are during pregnancy, the easier it will be for you to adapt to your changing shape and weight gain. You will also relieve stress, sleep better, fight gestational diabetes and, as we've established most probably help you to have an easier pregnancy and delivery. Keep up your normal daily physical activity or exercise for as long as you feel comfortable. Understand and accept that exercise is not dangerous for your baby – there is evidence that active women are less likely to experience problems in later pregnancy and labor. But don’t exhaust yourself either. Nothing can take the place of rest while you are pregnant, so make sure

TOP TIPS - Keep active on a daily basis: half an hour of walking each day can be enough - Avoid any strenuous exercise in hot weather - Drink plenty of water - If you go to exercise classes, make sure your teacher is properly qualified, and knows that you’re pregnant as well as how many weeks pregnant you are - Don't lie flat on your back, particularly after 16 weeks, because the weight of your bump presses on the main blood vessel bringing blood back to your heart and this can make you feel faint

you get lots of it. Remember, you have a life growing inside of you that needs a lot of your energy and rest to grow. So don’t overwork yourself. How should I move? If you weren't active before you got pregnant, don't suddenly take up strenuous exercise. If you are already taking classes, tell the instructor that you're pregnant. Remember that exercise doesn't have to be strenuous to be beneficial! The ideal exercise in pregnancy will get your heart pumping and keep you supple, without causing physical stress. Many activities, such as running and weight training, are fine in the beginning, but you may need to modify your workout as you grow bigger. This time is more about maintenance than progress. You'll really feel the benefit if you do a combination of aerobic exercise to get your heart pumping and muscle-strengthening exercise, which improves your strength, flexibility and posture. To get the full benefits, you'll need to exercise at least three times a week, ideally more. Try to find something that you enjoy, as you'll be more likely to stick to it in the longer term. Why not build more activity into your daily life? Take the stairs instead of the lift and do your housework or gardening energetically, as it all counts as exercise. Avoid doing sports where there's a risk of hitting your bump, or of slipping and falling, such as squash, gymnastics, rollerblading, horse riding and skiing. It’s always best to talk to your OBGYN before starting any exercise that's new to you – that disco spinning class you’ve always wanted to try might have to wait a year or so…

Don’t be afraid to move your body during pregnancy. Every day and every week your body is preparing you for birth and baby so welcome those changes by rewarding your body with the beauty of movement it deserves and I’m more than certain you’ll feel all the better for it. Stay happy and healthy! 31

Q.

I don’t know what to do about my university choices. Stay in Doha with one year abroad in the US or move away completely to the UK for the full four years? Both are excellent opportunities but I’m unsure what to do for the best. Time is running out.

A.

For most people, having one brilliant option is something to get excited about. You have two. This is not always common. Sometimes, we can overthink and be held back by questioning ‘what if I did the other thing?’ This line of thinking however, is not only hypothetical but never produces any real answers. Whichever you choose, you must make the most of it and not look back. If you choose the UK, you have the exciting challenge of living alone for the first time and adapting to a new culture. Not many get this chance; some people never leave their hometowns. If you decide to stay in Doha, you continue your education in a country where wonderful educational opportunities are becoming more diverse and readily available. The introduction of more universities and overseas academics is turning Qatar into a thriving educational hub. Having family close will provide the stability you need to express yourself confidently; the gap year means you get the best of both worlds. I can’t tell you what to do, but I’m confident you will enjoy either with the right attitude and focus. Be decisive; throw yourself into your choice 100% and grab it with both hands. Good luck.

KIDS Children in the purest form are innocent, loveable and bring out the emotion we never knew we had in us! Bringing them up right and teaching them how to think is more important than what to think.

Raising

the i-Generation

By Dawn Gibson

Are you worried that your five year old knows their way around a tablet better than you do? Abode spoke to doha based experts about how to protect kids while giving them freedom to learn and explore on mobile devices.

B

ringing up children in an online age has created a string of challenging situations that our parents and grandparents never had to consider. At what age is it appropriate for a child to have their own smartphone? How do you govern the amount of time they spend on their iPad? How much privacy should you allow a teenager using social media? Ultimately, how do we protect our children from the downside of technology while ensuring they have the skills they need to get along in an increasingly interconnected world?

If only there was an app that would answer these questions! While interactive technology is developing at a cracking pace, there is simply so much that we don’t yet know about the implications for childhood development.

34

Online - all the time Spend half an hour people-watching at a coffee shop at any Doha mall and it quickly becomes apparent just how much mobile devices are taking over our lives. On one table, Mom and Dad are using their smartphones to check their email and their Facebook pages, while their tiny tot is in her pram, quietly playing a game on her iPad. Across the cafe, there’s a group of teenage girls, all busy on their phones messaging people in other parts of the world, rather than chatting to their friends just across the table. With such scenes now commonplace, is it any wonder that children feel they must have the latest gadget too? A third of children aged between five and 15 in the UK now have their own tablet computer, according to a recent survey by communications regulator Ofcom. Six out of ten children use a tablet at home, while more than 10 per cent of three to four year olds have their own device.

Although similar data is not yet available here, kids in Qatar are believed to be just as switched on. The 2015 Media Use in the Middle East study by the Northwestern University Even if kids are in Qatar revealed people here spend more time interactive media gurus, online than those in any of the other five Arab they still need a balance nations surveyed. We all know that sitting in front of a screen for hours is no good for us – remember Jim Carrey’s warped TV-addicted character in The Cable Guy? However, there has not been enough research on children’s use of touch-pad devices to determine the long term effects.

in their lives between education, exploratory, imaginative play, physical play and social interaction.

Setting boundaries To get a better idea of how to provide this balance, we spoke to Linda Obel, Regional Director of supplemental education group Oxford Learning Qatar, and Ingrid Masselink Andreas, a Youth and Child Counselor who runs parenting workshops and is the mother of twin nine and a half year old boys. Miss Obel and Mrs Andreas agree that boundary setting is fundamental, just as it was for previous generations. “It’s really important for children to have routines and to know expectations ahead of time, so parents and care-givers need to set time limits and parameters for the use of iPads, iPhones and the endless number of games that are available on these devices,” Miss Obel says. “Some parents have very strong and clear boundaries, but some have an approach where they just want their child to be happy, and the lines can be too blurred.” They both advocate an hour a day as a reasonable period of time to allow children to play on interactive devices, though each family needs to determine what works for them. Mrs Andreas adds that her boys are allowed an hour a day on their iPads, but can choose to break this up into two half hour sessions or enjoy a one hour session.

35

ABODE August FINAL.indd 35

kidsspecial

It also helps to set aside a regular period where everyone in the family switches off and spends time together. “We like to play the card game UNO or Monopoly and have a kind of old-fashioned family gathering,” Mrs Andreas says. “It’s not just about the game, because while you’re playing, you start to talk about things. When you ask a child ‘how is school?’ they often won’t really respond, but when you are playing with them and having fun, that’s when the stories come out.”

How young is too young? Parents, educators and psychologists disagree on whether mobile devices should be kept away from very young children and what age is appropriate for a child to have their own phone. Mrs Andreas believes it is important to consider why a child wants a device, exactly how they will use it and how you will monitor that use. Her sons have iPads because it is obligatory for their schooling, a trend that is quite common among Doha’s international schools. While she thinks it is fine for young children to use tablets for educational purposes, there is a risk parents will rely on them as substitute babysitters.

Six out of ten children use a tablet at home, while more than 10 per cent of three to four year olds have their own device.

Her sons do not have smartphones, although one was given a cheap mobile phone which he quickly lost interest in. “He thought it was the greatest thing on earth when he got it, but he stopped using it,” Mrs Andreas says. “They are definitely interested in having a smartphone – but the question is, what are they going to do with it? And, secondly, where are they going to keep it? “If you want your child to reach you in an emergency, then, yes, it’s good for them to have a mobile phone. But if they already have an iPad or a PC, what is the added value of having a smartphone?”

Safety first

Miss Obel, who doesn’t see the need for young children to have smartphones either, strongly believes both parents and

36

ABODE August FINAL.indd 36

7/25/15 2:14 PM

teachers have a duty to ensure all devices are being used under supervision. “iPads are wonderful tools and they really complement the educational experience – they are full of amazing apps that support learning, help kids get organized and inspire the imagination,” she enthuses. “But technology should never replace student-teacher contact time. The dialogue that teachers have with children – the story-telling, the explaining, the sharing of wisdom – that can’t come from an iPad. “Also, you can’t just give an iPad to students and not have a clear plan about how and when they are going to be used. We have to put the safety of children first and foremost.” This applies to older kids too, according to Miss Obel, who says parents should be able to check up on their teenagers’ use of social media and text messages, especially in an era when cyber-bullying and trolling are sad realities. Mrs Andreas is unapologetic about checking up on her childrens’ tablet use. “If you look at how children’s brains develop, even a 17-year-old is not yet an adult, although they may seem to be,” she says. “So, we still need to be there for them and to relate to them, but it’s all about the way you communicate. I really believe in explanation. Saying ‘you’re not allowed this or that’ just makes them more curious.” Although Qatar’s censorship laws mean access to unsuitable material is already curtailed, keeping up-to-date with the latest parental control software doesn’t hurt.

Keeping Kids Safe Online • Decide on a set amount of time children are allowed to spend using interactive devices each day – and stick to it • Set aside regular periods for offline, no screen family time and make them fun – play games, go on a family outing or try a new sport • Have a no phone/no device rule at all meal times • When setting boundaries, explain to your child exactly what you are doing and why • Try to be as open and communicative with your children as possible to make it easier for them to come to you if they are facing a situation like cyber-bullying

But beyond the dark side of the internet, the main danger for children is becoming so immersed in a virtual world that they are no longer functioning well in the real one. “Being addicted to video games or their phone and the various apps on there can cause students to lose balance,” Miss Obel says. “One of the major risks is children becoming so addicted to the technology they are not living a balanced, healthy lifestyle, one that is socially, physically and emotionally healthy.”

One of the things I love most about having little girls is the fun chance I get every day to do their hair. From the time both of my girls were born, they’ve rocked headbands, pigtails, braids and bows and their hair is neatly brushed before we leave the house. On days when I have all morning to create a perfect polished hairstyle, we get creative with all kinds of braids and twists. But I’m a mom of 5 and usually our mornings aren’t filled with extra time to perfectly pin or curl each strand of hair, especially weekday mornings when we are getting ready for school. This is why I find it extremely helpful to have a short list of go-to hairstyles that take 5 minutes or less from start to finish. Want to see my list? Fast & Fun School Lunches By Dawn Gibson

Getting kids to eat a healthy school lunch isn’t always easy, but these tips will make it less of a chore

A

agh! Is it that time of year again? While the summer holidays sometimes seem to stretch on forever, the start of the school year is a reality check for everyone. Along with organizing uniforms, supplies and the school run, figuring out new and interesting things to put in your children’s lunchbox every day can be a test for even the most inventive of parents.

Nutritious but fun to eat? Healthy yet appealing to little stomachs? It’s a tricky compromise. In a bid to make the new school year more appetizing, Abode has put

together some top lunchbox ideas to hit the spot with both you and your kids.

The Balancing Act Giving children more say in what they eat is one of the easiest ways to ensure their school lunch doesn’t get binned. Depending on the age of your child, this can include helping to draw up the grocery list and picking out items at the supermarket, as well as preparing the lunch itself. It helps to have a specific section of the kitchen set up for school lunch preparation.

or cereals, a serve of dairy, a serve of protein and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Don’t go overboard and get rid of all the sugary and high-fat treats – this is a surefire way to ensure your children fixate on ‘banned’ foods.

Ideally, you should be ensuring a balance of the staple food groups – complex carbohydrates from whole-grain breads

Eggs A hard-boiled egg provides 13 vitamins and minerals as well as easily digested protein. Add hummus and veggie sticks for dipping, a small container of berries and a carton of low-fat fruit yoghurt.

Make a wrap with strips of roast chicken, plenty of veggies and a low-fat sauce (steer clear of ranch or mayonnaise-based options). For sides, pop in a cheese stick or two and a small container of fruit salad.

Pasta Wholemeal pasta is a great base for a healthy lunch. Make your own tomato-based sauce using tomato paste, a can of plum tomatoes, honey and herbs. Add mix ins like bell peppers, carrot, zucchini, chicken or beef. Include a small container of pre-cut fruit on the side.

Step Away from the Sandwich While sandwiches have been a staple of the school lunchbox since, ahem, the invention of the school lunchbox, it doesn’t hurt to mix things up a bit. Try experimenting with whole-meal bagels, tortillas and wraps choc-full of your children’s favourite fillings. Other easy to prepare, nutritious options include hard boiled eggs, small containers of tuna or chicken mixed in with veggies, pasta or rice, hummus with vegetable

sticks for dipping and airpopped popcorn (not the microwave variety, which has been linked to health risks). If sticking with sandwiches, make the whole-grain options more appealing by varying the type of bread you buy. While it can be hard to get a lot of diversity in whole-grain bakery products in Doha, all supermarkets stock some artisan breads, so ditch the white stuff if you haven’t already.

Use big cookie cutters to make sandwiches into a variety of interesting shapes such as stars, hearts and flowers. Better yet, get your children to do the cutting themselves. You can try the same approach with fruit to make it look more appealing or, alternatively, make some fruit kebabs.

Choose a Classy Color Combo

Layer on the Accessories

The standard bright pink and blue color palette gets old before you know it, so choose a timeless color scheme that can evolve and grow with your child’s décor. Two or three shades that are mellow, and muted won’t overwhelm the room and will make way for sprucing or changing it up with accessories like a new bed set, window coverings, or a rug. This bedroom used a combination of some super easy colors to work with - pastel pink paired with beige flooring and white furniture.

We love layering on decorative items to make a room pop, that’s why it’s super important to stick with a muted wall color. This makes it so easy to change up your color scheme. Layer on colorful and fun accessories throughout the room such as a funky chandelier, patterned headboard, and even a wallpapered ceiling adds an unexpected punch of color and energy!

Choose Furniture Wisely It may look cute to fill up a room with kid-sized furniture and dĂŠcor, but in a few years time you will have to buy a whole new bedroom set. Look for flexible furniture that will grow with your child such as beds that can be later converted to larger pieces or even a crib that can be extended into a teen sized bed!

4

Use Up Wall Space for Storage Get smart with the space you have available and try to use every square foot to sneak in some storage space. Install shelves around the bed headboard, slip sleek containers under the bed to store shoes, art supplies, and toys. Keep in mind that kids have a ton of stuff and without ample storage space, you’ve got a very messy room!

5

Create a Productive Work Station No matter what stage your child is at, having a decent sized workstation is a must in their bedroom. From doing arts and crafts, to coloring books, and one day studying and typing on a computer; having a desk and comfortable office chair is a requirement. Arrange a section of their bedroom to be their mini office and encourage organization with sufficient storage space, labeled containers, and a pinup board to place their schedule and notes.

Grilled Octopus is one of their signature dishes. The octopus is marinated in a traditional Peruvian base called  'Anticuchera', which combines the famous Peruvian 'Aji Panca' (a native dry chili paste) and basic ingredients such as vinegar, salt and pepper. After two days of marination, the octopus is charcoal grilled to give the dish its special smoky taste.

1) Place the duck skin side up. Using a sharp knife, score (1/4-inch-deep) cuts across the skin at a 45 degree angle. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper over the meat side of each duck breast. 2) Heat a well-seasoned nonstick pan over high heat. When pan is hot, add duck breasts, skin side down, and cook for 5 minutes, or until skin is brown and crispy. Flip and cook for 2 more minutes. If you are unfamiliar with duck breasts, don't be put off by their unusual look. The fat-to-meat proportions reverse themselves when cooked, as much of the fat is rendered and the meat expands. 3) Remove pan from heat and transfer duck breasts, skin side up, to a cooking sheet lined with aluminium foil. Bake on the top rack of the oven for 5 minutes For red cabbage puree: 400 g red cabbage cut the red cabbage into fine strips mixes with the salt, sugar and orange juice and marinate for 1 hour. Slice the onion and sauté in olive oil until soft, add the red cabbage and make fine puree. For red cabbage coleslaw: 200 g red cabbage cut into fine julienne marinated with the salt, sugar, white vinegar then mix with mayonnaise.

ur everyday morning coffee comes with a long tradition originating from Ethiopia. Today with 1.6 million cups of coffee drank daily worldwide, coffee is the second most-traded commodity on the planet, which makes it the world's most popular drink, after water. Coffee's long history begins in Ethiopia in 800 AD with the popular legend of Kaldi, a goatherd in Abyssinia, who noticed his herd prancing around after grazing at the cherry-red berries of a particular shrub. BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE SEA...

The Maltese Islands

BY MARISELA PAESANO

Blessed with a mild climate and set in crystal waters, Malta and its sister islands of Gozo and Comino offer you a memorable experience, where moments of complete relaxation can be combined with the exploration of the islands’ many cultural, artistic and natural treasures. Marsaxlokk Harbour

M

alta, known for its rich history and cultural heritage stretching back over 7,000 years, forms an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea and is the meeting point for numerous cultures and civilisations that made their mark on the world.

The Arab occupation of Malta helped shape the Maltese language to a significant degree. Its proximity to Sicily and Italy had a great impact not only on the language but also on cuisine and religious traditions. Being part of the British Empire led the country to adopt English as a second language, alongside Maltese. The islands offer endless opportunities for sightseeing and exploration. If prehistoric temples, Roman ruins and medieval castles weren’t enough, there are also walled cities, formidable forts and splendid churches. The travel backin-time experience will leave you feeling mesmerized.

ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS VALLETTA Valletta, The Fortress City, is Malta's capital city: the commercial heart of the Islands. The magnificent fortress city built on the arid rock of Mount Sceberras peninsula, which rises steeply from two deep harbours, Marsamxett and Grand Harbour. Walking along the streets of this vibrant UNESCO heritage site is an experience in itself. The city is busy by day, yet retains a timeless atmosphere. The grid of narrow streets boasts some of Europe's finest art works, churches and palaces. Worth visiting are St. John’s Co-Cathedral and its Museum featuring the famous beheading of St. John by Michelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio. The National Library, Auberge de Castille - now the Prime Minister’s office and Auberge d’italie, in upper Merchants Street are sights not to miss. The Auberge de Provence in Republic Street is the seat of the National Museum of Archaeology.

The Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Lower Barrakka Gardens provide breathtaking views of the Grand Harbour. THE THREE CITIES The Three Cities of Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa offer an intriguing insight into Malta and its history. Left largely unvisited, these cities offer a slice of authentic life as well as a glimpse into Malta's maritime fortunes.

74 Three Cities, aerial view

MDINA, THE SILENT CITY Mdina, known as the silent city, lamp lit by night is fascinating and one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. It was home then, as now, to Malta's noble families; some are descendants of the Norman, Sicilian and Spanish overlords who made Mdina their home from the 12th century onwards. Impressive palaces line its narrow, shady streets. MARSAXLOKK Marsaxlokk village is located in the southeastern part of Malta which is famous for its big Sunday fish market and its many decorative colourful boats called Luzzus. The charming village has around 3200 inhabitants and has a wide variety of seafood restaurants. Twenty minutes away by foot from the sandy beach on Marsaxlokk is the stunning St. Peter’s Pool at Delimara. St. Paul’s bay with the natural pool is the place to be if you are into diving, snorkeling and cliff jumping. The smooth, weathered limestone ledges make good sunbathing spots at St. Peters Pool. Don’t miss the saltpans that can be seen at this location either.

which towers over Victoria, the island’s commercial and administrative centre, or visit the Ggantija Temples which are considered to be the oldest freestanding structures in the world. The Azure Window in Dwejra stands majestically as a gateway to the sea, while the nearby Inland Sea provides a shallow and deliciously warm pool for bathers. A visit to this tranquil haven is guaranteed to leave you with indelible memories of the land where time appears to have stood still and where relaxation comes so easily. The island of Comino is ideal for a good day’s hiking and the ultimate in solitude and views. The island's main attraction is the Blue Lagoon. In summer, this sheltered inlet of shimmering aquamarine water over white sand is very popular with day-trippers. Comino is also worth a visit in winter, and is ideal for walkers and photographers. With no urban areas or cars on the island, one can easily smell the scent of wild thyme and other herbs.

THE ISLANDS OFFER AN IMPRESSIVE RANGE OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SITES, TOGETHER WITH A WIDE SPECTRUM OF ACTIVITIES, MAKING MALTA A TRULY UNIQUE YEAR ROUND HOLIDAY DESTINATION.

GOZO AND COMINO Accessible from Malta by a 25 minute ferry crossing, Gozo’s charm is apparent the moment you arrive. Greener, more rural and just one third the size of Malta, Gozo moves to a noticeably different, more leisurely rhythm than its sister island. Gozo offers you a unique variety of cultural sites and natural landscapes. You can visit the imposing citadel

Nightlife on the Islands The Islands have an effervescent calendar of cultural events to see, such as the Malta Arts Festival, the Valletta Baroque Festival, the Opera Festival, the Choir Festival and the International Jazz Festival held in July. Major music concerts starring top international artists are held every summer, attracting massive crowds of both tourists and locals alike. The Maltese Islands have also become a hub for the clubbing scene. Internationally renowned DJs appear for guest weekends throughout the year. The main nightlife clubbing action is in Paceville, on the coast near St. Julians, where the clubs and restaurants are in abundance. Classical music is very popular on the islands and organ recitals take place regularly in the many baroque churches. Regular orchestral, soloist concerts and operas take place in some stunning historic venues.

Maltese cuisine Maltese cuisine is the result of a long relationship between the islanders and the many civilisations who occupied the Maltese Islands over the centuries. This marriage of tastes has given Malta an eclectic mix of Mediterranean cooking. Although the restaurant scene is a mix of speciality restaurants, there are many eateries that specialize in local fare, serving their own versions of specialities. Traditional Maltese food is rustic and based on the seasons. Look out for Lampuki Pie (fish pie), Rabbit Stew, Bragioli (beef olives), Kapunata, (Maltese version of ratatouille), and widow's soup, which includes a small round of Gbejniet (sheep or goat's cheese). On most food shop counters, you'll see Bigilla, a thick pate of broad beans with garlic. The snacks that must be tried are ‘hobz bizzejt' (round of bread dipped in olive oil, rubbed with ripe tomatoes and filled with a mix of tuna, onion, garlic, tomatoes and capers) and pastizzi (flaky pastry parcel filled with ricotta or mushy peas).

(dentex), sargu (white bream) and trill(red mullet). Swordfish and tuna follow later in the season, around early to late autumn, followed by the famed lampuka, or dolphin fish. Octopus and squid are very often used to make some rich stews and pasta sauces.

A trip to the Marsaxlokk fish market on Sunday morning will show you just how varied the fish catch is in Maltese waters. When fish is in abundance, you'll find Aljotta (fish soup). Depending on the season, you'll see spnotta(bass), dott (stone fish), cerna (grouper),dentici

Favourite dessert delicacies are kannoli (tube of crispy, fried pastry filled with ricotta), Sicilian-style, semi-freddo desserts (mix of sponge, ice-cream, candied fruits and cream) and Helwa tat-Tork (sweet sugary mixture of crushed and whole almonds).

Maltese food is a wonderful mix of Mediterranean flavours

AISHA AL-NAAMA by KEERTANA KODURU

Enthusiastic, young, inspiring and a vibrant personality, Aisha Al-Naama is an adventurous go-getter. A stunning lady filled with zest for life, she believes we should all get out of our comfort zones. She speaks to ABODE about her journey and being one of the first Qatari women to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

A

BODE: How did your journey with adventures so far away from home begin? AISHA: It began almost one year ago when I took part in a trip to help build a school for children in a remote village in the Amazon. It is at that point that I realized that I want to do more, experience new things, get out of my comfort zone and give back. So when I heard about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, I decided that I would like to be part of that experience and thankfully I did. This mountain urge for new challenges/ adventures only grew bigger so I kept going for one adventure after the other until I got to where I am today and will keep going. I realized that we should take chances when opportunities come right before us and conquer our fear.

A: How did your family react to you being the person you are today? AN: I am very grateful to have a supportive family that believes in what I want to do, which is one of the reasons. I believe having the right support is a key aspect to achieving success. A: What level of preparation with regards to fitness would you recommend for a first time climber? AN: Climbing a Mountain requires a lot of training and a good level of stamina and endurance. It is both mentally and physically challenging. Since we live in a flat country, to train I used the treadmill with the maximum incline available, and walked at a steady pace for a couple of hours. I also went to The Torch Doha and trained on their staircase, which is

used for international competitions, in order to prepare for the climb. I would walk all the way up to the last floor (51 floors equals more than 1000 steps), do it twice a day with a minimum of 3 times a week. During training I walked with several bottles of water in my backpack to simulate the weight I would have to carry in Kilimanjaro. It was tiring but was well worth it and helped a lot with my stamina and breathing, particularly breathing as it is the most important aspect on a mountain due to the lack of oxygen at high altitudes. The main challenge on the mountain was adjusting to the altitude as the oxygen level kept decreasing as we went higher up, making breathing very difficult. So I found that the way you breathe is one of the most important things on a mountain. Secondly, definitely my recommendation for a first time climber is to start training at least 3 months before the hike. Get used to walking for long distances using either a treadmill or a staircase since most of the effort is on the legs. A: What was running through your mind when you were cycling through the Alps from Italy to Germany? AN: Cycling through the Alps from Italy to Germany was another unforgettable experience that was extremely physically challenging. We cycled for 7 days crossing 7 cities in 4 countries, covering a distance of approximately 800 km, with 7000m elevation, starting in Venice and ending in Stuttgart. Having said that it took me on one of the most beautiful routes I’ve seen, every day we would cross a different city with a different experience, different landscape and terrains. A: What is your inspiration behind working for the many causes you believe in? AN: For me working for these causes achieves several things, one is the challenge itself by trying something new, different and getting out of my comfort zone. I set a goal for myself to accomplish these challenges for myself and my family, my country and all the people who support and believe in me and the cause. Secondly, the main inspiration is that it is not only a personal achievement, but rather doing something for the greater good by giving back to the community and helping others in need. By working

ittingly, the marque’s first showroom in Conduit Street, Mayfair was founded a short step from London’s famous centre of tailoring excellence, Savile Row. Here, Sir Henry Royce and his partner The Honourable Charles Rolls echoed the offerings of their illustrious neighbours by providing London’s most stylish denizens with the automotive equivalent of the finest cloths; a perfectly engineered RollsRoyce chassis and running gear. The customer would then call upon their preferred coachbuilder, who would furnish the car with personal touches and accoutrements specified perfectly to their requirements.

Simplicity and luxury combine in refined, minimalist features that speak volumes. In contrast, interior details reveal a unique take on classic couture, with stylish silks, pattern play and decorative textures.

Set your own stylish take on Wraith Inspired by Fashion with one of three accent colours. Jasmine Green softly complements the white-on-white colour scheme. Mugello Red is a classic Rolls-Royce colour, much-loved by many owners. Tailored Purple is an original Wraith launch colour, creating a seamless connection with the model’s origins.

Vibrant leather seat piping, contrast stitching and Rolls-Royce headrest monograms stand out against clean Arctic White natural grain leather, adding textural and visual interest. Or go monochrome to the max and switch cool Arctic White for highimpact Black.

The two-tone natural grain leather steering wheel has a stitchless seam, giving it a unique tactile quality.

A two-tone Arctic White and Andalusian White exterior elegantly takes chic minimalism to brave new extremes. A hand-painted Feature Line adds a flash of colour to the white-on-white paintwork, highlighting Wraith’s clean, elegant lines.

A clever balance of polished textures and shades, the Bespoke Inspired by Fashion clock is a true modern classic. A subtle, pearlescent finish beautifully accentuates the clean, minimalism of the polished, white fascia, giving the entire piece a jewel-like quality.
