Nasser Ahmed Hassan Bilal is quite a busy man. As the second son of Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bilal, chairman of AHB Group, he is AHB’s Operations and Finance Director, responsible for overseeing its day-to-day operations and ABODE’s Editor in Chief as well. He also works as the Controller of Foreign Programmes (English, French & Urdu) at Qatar Broadcasting Service. ABODE had a chance to catch up with him so he could share his thoughts about managing QBS, Qatar National Day and on how Qatar has developed as a country. Photography by Jessie Palanca

atar National Day, brings us all together in a spirit of union and comradeship, irrespective of where we come from, to rejoice at the great legacy that was handed down to us, and also to recognize the responsibility that we have to all to contribute as citizens and residents in taking this great nation forward. What Qatar is today and what we have to offer to the world, we owe to
the futuristic vision and exemplary leadership of our beloved Emir, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who continues to carry on in the spirit of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani as the leader of the bygone era who was responsible for our unity. His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Crown Prince of Qatar, was wisely chosen by HH the Emir, as he considers
the needs of future generations to come. In fact, we observe Qatar National Day partly because of him, as it was through a joint decree from both HH the Emir and the Heir Apparent, that the holiday was established in June 21, 2007. And last, but not least, we are grateful to Her Highness, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser, for being the driving force behind Education City and a host of humanitarian work. National Day is intended to maintain a knowledge

and appreciation of Qatar’s heritage and to encourage pride in this great nation. For me, Qatar National Day goes beyond just celebrations. As Qataris, we recognize and honor the courage, the efforts, the sacrifices and the hardships that our forefathers endured; all towards uniting our nation out of a society of conflicting tribes that was deprived of any form of security and an organized system of administration. As Controller of Foreign Programmes (English, French & Urdu) at Qatar Broadcasting Service, I make sure we cover National Day live all day long. We love to interact with the public and share their feelings and comments. We are the voice of the nation, and that is a responsibility that we have to take very seriously. I make sure that I am continuously tuned into QBS Radio, whether I am at the Radio Station or away from it to ensure quality and exactness of
what is on air. This year, QBS has planned an interactive quiz program, whereby our listeners can participate by calling in. We have planned giveaways for the participants throughout the day and I encourage everyone to call in on December 18th. Meaning of the day Every year on this day, my family and I attend the colorful parade on the Corniche. We return again for the dazzling fireworks at night; our children especially enjoy this part of the national holiday. This is surely one of the busiest but most spectacular days of the year, so I advise everyone to experience it. I would recommend everyone, young and old join in the celebratory feeling of the day and attend one of the events or celebrations at the Corniche, the Family Heritage Village or Katara to enjoy the views and the magical atmosphere among the crowd.
Qatar today and its future I believe Qatar National Day fosters pride in every Qatari. I love my country and all it has to offer. I am proud of the beauty of Souq Waqif and its wonderful and unique atmosphere: I love watching tourists shop and barter for silks, carpets, spices, antiques, gold and authentic Arabian perfumes. I also enjoy strolling along the bustling Corniche and also along the waterfront and appreciate the world’s finest Arabic art collection in the Museum of Islamic Art. In fact, I believe, this is a very exciting time for our country. We are growing in every sector and lots of key projects are taking place right now, from Doha 2022 to the realization of our first Metro rail. The next few years will see a drastic transformation for us: we are getting bigger and better day after day, so I could not be more proud of my nation!

The first Arab model to front a major beauty brand This Tunisian model made her catwalk debut for Vivienne Westwood last year and hasn't looked back since. She landed editorials for French Vogue and walked the runway for Givenchy, Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta. Earlier this year she became the new face of French beauty giant Lancôme, which crowned her the brand’s FIRST EVER Muslim ambassador.
Hanaa Ben Abdesslem was born in Nabeul, Tunisia – a place where being a model is not so common. Despite this fact, she decided to think “out of the box” and follow her dreams which led to an astonishing modeling career.
How and when did you start modeling? I was raised in a town on the coast of Tunisia called Nabeul. My father is a civil engineer and my mother is a stay at home mum. At a very young age I would tip toe around the house pretending I was on a catwalk and fashion always fascinated me.
Since I can remember, I always dreamed of becoming a model. In 2009, I participated in a reality TV show for models in Lebanon. I met my manager, Sophie GalaI, during that period and in 2010, she presented me to IMG Paris who in turn presented me to Carine Roitfeld (Editor in Chief of French Vogue at the time). Through her introduction to Riccardo Tisci, I was chosen for Givenchy’s fashion show that same season.
How did you manage to cope with success and fame? Are you enjoying it? It’s important for me to stay grounded and try to use the success and fame to help others. It is for this reason that I spend my spare time with the associations I have affiliated myself to. The first one is “Esmaani”. It is a non-profit organization and its main focus is to contribute to the development of social needs in public hospitals.

The second is “Yeda “ the Youth Empowerment development association where we organize training programs and cultural activities that nurture the innovative and creative spirit of the Tunisian youth. I enjoy my success and fame because I feel that I can contribute and make a difference to improve the lives of others who are less fortunate. Who is your inspiration? I do not have one particular person who inspires me, but one Arab woman in the fashion industry whom I admire and respect is Liela Menshari, the Hermes window designer. She received the Golden Dido Award for her contribution to Tunisian culture and influence in the world. I also admire the model and TV presenter Afef Jnifen, who fights for women’s rights. What’s your typical day like? If I’m not spending it on a flight heading towards a shooting location then it is spending the day shooting with a photographer.

Where is your main base these days? And who are your main clients?
What advice would you give to any aspiring model in the Muslim world?
I am based between NY, Paris and London. Every two months or whenever I can, I take a few days to go back to Tunisia to visit my family.
My advice is to persevere, be professional, work hard and have a healthy lifestyle. As a model you need to join very good modeling agency. It is also important to have a good manager to orient your career. You need to be passionate about fashion and stay grounded.
My main client is Lancôme and a variety of fashion designers and magazines. What has been the highlight of your career so far?
What’s your main aim?
One of the most memorable experiences was my encounter with Jean Paul Gaultier. He fascinated me and we had an interesting discussion. He was one of the designers that inspired me to become a model.
The challenges are to communicate that modeling is a career choice, a career path and a serious profession. It is not a it is not simply a hobby and to succeed in you need to take it very seriously if you want the industry to take you seriously.
My second most exciting experience was when I presented the Givenchy show Collection S/S 2011. The third and most significant is becoming part of the Lancôme Family!
My goal is to change the perception of modeling in my country and in the Arab world. I want to introduce more international standards to the fashion industry in this region. I also hope to work with new inspiring Arab designers in the future. •

e live in a gift-giving society, yet some of us are not always sure what we should do when it comes to accepting gifts, what it is appropriate to give, and whether there are any rules that go along with giftgiving to begin with. In actuality, in both personal and business relationships, many experts agree on a few basic guidelines that should be followed.

The Good and the Bad
In both cases, you want to avoid giving a gift that the recipient may feel is inappropriate, too personal or offensive. An example might include giving a friend a sexy nightgown – or a book that focuses on weight-loss recipes! While one may make the person feel uncomfortable, the other could be perceived as a message that you think your friend is overweight, which could leave her feeling bad, rather than grateful that you thought of her during the holidays. Experts also advise that it’s never too late to send a gift, so even if you send one after the holiday, it’s acceptable. They also agree that you should always stay within your means regarding how much to spend. You do not need to match what someone else spends on you, when purchasing a reciprocal gift for them. Another tip is that it’s always a good idea to skip giving cash as a gift and opt for gift certificates instead, if you can’t find something specific that you think they would like. In many cases, including for teachers and in an office setting, cash gifts would be deemed especially inappropriate, but gift certificates would be welcome.

This time of year, there are many office parties and gift exchanges. While they may sound like fun at the outset, each comes with its own host of potential concerns. “Choosing the right holiday gift for your colleagues, your boss or your clients can seem like one more overwhelming task to add to your plate during the holiday season,” explains Jacqueline Whitmore, international etiquette expert and author of "Business Class: Etiquette Essentials for Success at Work” (St. Martin’s Press, 2005). “That’s because gift-giving in the business environment has its own set of rules and guidelines.” When it comes to gift exchanges in the corporate world, it’s a safe bet to give useful gifts that may even be used to add style or organization to the office environment. And you will want to have a spending limit established so that you know from the start what the guidelines are. “Once a price limit is set among coworkers or for your office’s holiday gift exchange, make sure you stick to it. Limits help participants select an
appropriate gift at an affordable price,” adds Whitmore. “When you overspend, you run the risk of looking like a showoff. On the other hand, spending considerably below the norm might come off looking stingy.” Throughout the year, you could try to keep tabs on the particular interests of your co-workers, so that you can choose a gift that is fitting. It is also a good idea to know the corporate policy regarding giving a gift, if you plan to give one to someone at another office. In addition, avoid humorous gag gifts unless you know the person really well, because they could easily offend and damage a business relationship. When it comes to buying the boss a gift, consider getting co-workers together to brainstorm and go in on a gift, rather than purchasing individually. “The hand-written note adds a nice touch to any gift. Those deserving a note of thanks include anyone who’s given you advice, their time, or a helping hand this year,” adds Whitmore. “Appropriate wrapping paper and presentation are also very important – and, whenever possible, give the gift in person.” Finally, always remember to include a personal note.•

How long have you been in Doha and how did this opportunity come about? I have been in Doha for a year now. An ex-colleague who had moved to The St. Regis Doha and who knew my work and background contacted me for this opportunity, and it was a perfect match. How did you prepare yourself for this role? In a sense, I've been preparing for this role my whole life. I come from a family of opera singers and have grown up around world class music and musicians. I also spent time with Wynton Marsalis and other Jazz at Lincoln Center staff in both Paris and New York to learn about jazz. In the end, Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha is both art and hospitality. I promise I give the best of myself to every artist and every guest. What’s your aim for this wonderful jazz club? To create the new home of jazz in the Middle East by providing the best service, and a fun night out with an unforgettable experience
for each guest. The music is curated by Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center. It is my goal to match that standard with the hospitality and guest experience. You have a very interesting background. Please share it with us. I come from a family of opera singers and musicians, and I’ve spent my whole life very close to artists and the artistic life. Instead of going into music as a career, I decided I wanted to go into hospitality. So this job is a perfect mix of my two passions.
Why do you like your job? It is very exciting to meet all these great musicians coming from New York, and to share their experiences about jazz. I love to meet new people and to learn about different cultures and that is exactly what I have on a daily basis in my job. Of course I am a passionate music lover and to work in a place where I am surrounded by amazing music is a dream job for me. I also love the fact that we are bringing something new to the local community and to the jazz fans in the region. It is great to see that Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha has already become a highlight of Doha nightlife. •

There’s something about the holidays that make us want to bring out festive colours, glitter, lights, and most importantly to deck the halls! Before you start with the traditional décor you have been doing for years, follow our lead with a new take on colourful, perky, and sharp colour palettes this holiday season.
Mix up colours and patterns. To get this look spot on you must choose your fabrics and colours wisely. Choose patterned fabrics in two or three colour families to allow mixing and matching. Pull out a few of your favourite hues and use those for accent pieces like ornaments, vases, napkin rings, and ribbons.

e’ve long forgotten the typical heavy layers of holiday tradition, and decided to switch it up with a summery flair. Dark hues have now turned bright to help refresh and liven up a home. A Country Abode in the City “Home is where the heart is...” Words and Images The Studio at Harrods
In one of their favourite projects to date, the team at The Studio at Harrods put together a bespoke interior design scheme for the owners of a stunning 15th Century cottage in the middle of the English countryside. Here, they share their tips on how to achieve your very own country lifestyle with some of their design secrets, even if you live in the hustle and bustle of the city.
T
he key when developing a country-style interior is all about the combination of textures, colours and styles of furniture and furnishings. Mixing old with new, bold with soft and rough with smooth will successfully result in a home that does not feel contrived and yet does not feel like a relic of days gone by, either. The idea is to create an environment that appears to have naturally evolved with a collection of antique and modern furniture in complimentary materials and textiles such as wood, metal and stone, with upholstery and soft furnishings in leather, wool, velvet and silk, to work in harmony and accomplish an authentic-looking home. Good design is introduced from the moment you enter the front door and a successful scheme then flows effortlessly from room to room, allowing a fully integrated formula. The main living spaces will form the main focal points and so should display luxurious yet natural finishes in a blend of specially selected custom and lovingly restored existing pieces which are then reinforced with a sophisticated lighting design to really showcase all of the unique features. A country-style kitchen should form the heart of the home with well considered storage and display cabinets for tableware and cooking equipment finished with top-of-the -range cooking facilities. The ideal layout should include specifically designed ‘zones’ for cosy, informal living, an area for social

A unique book case was made from reclaimed fruit and vegetable crates with the help of The Studio's innovative designers and a bespoke joinery specialist. Leather upholstered ottomans round off the room. chose these bespoke individually handblown glass shades in vivid colours with fashionable industrial-looking light bulbs for the ceiling lights to flood the dining table with glowing pools of light while mirroring the striped fabric of the dining chairs. low-key dining such as a breakfast bar with easy high leather-upholstered stools and a snug with soft seating – perfect for reading, enjoying a cup of freshly brewed coffee or just simply relaxing while your home-made bread bakes in the oven. Exposed beams and low-level ceilings add to the mood and although this is not an essential design element, we added bespoke solid oak beams with a matching door to the kitchen herb garden during the renovation of the existing part of this 15th century cottage,

A simple desk with a retro style chair and an angle poise lamp are all you need to achieve a suitable area for working. The master bedroom and master bathroom are considered ‘primary’ areas and therefore should include beautifully executed interior design with stunning features and plenty of bespoke elements. A good quality bed is paramount to the design of the master bedroom and should be thought of as an investment ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep for years to come. The fabrics selected to upholster the headboard, occasional pieces of furniture and scatter cushions can be a lovely way of personalizing a room to create a restful yet indulgent space in a range of colours and textures to suit your own individual taste. Premium quality bed linens are always selected to dress the bed and we believe that this is not an area that should ever be compromised. We recommend

The Studio selected a handsome copper bath tub which was lit by a series of spot lights in the stone floor forming an impressive centre piece for the master bathroom. A large corner shower unit was installed with huge glass partition walls to allow the feature stone tiles to be visible. For that nostalgic look, a roll top enamel bath tub with an old fashioned hand held shower attachment could work just as well. brands like Frette and Yves Delorme who create luxury collections in subtle patterns and colour schemes which can be topped with a textured bedspread in a contrasting colour to add a layer of richness. The holiday season is near, and with it comes the joy of sharing special food and gifts with family and friends. Holiday food ingredients are often healthy, but they are usually prepared in such a way that the resulting food has too many calories, and too much sugar and fat .But since we only eat them once a year, can we eat them without remorse?

holiday dinner can amount to about 3500 – 7000 calories depending on the amount of food we eat. It is very difficult to cut calories during the holidays, because the food, the table setting,
and the ambiance bring sweet memories of family, friends, and precious moments together. It is so easy to indulge but then we become guilt-ridden when the holiday time is over and we are wearing the extra calories. To keep from feeling guilty, try the following tips:

Make sweet potato casserole with half of the marshmallows or a lighter version of bread pudding 4. Cut fat by 50% for each recipe. You can add healthy oils such as extra virgin olive, sesame and flaxseed oils on top of the food before serving. 5. Dilute eggnog or high calorie punch with cinnamon flavored non-fat lactose free milk 6. Add ground flax to your stuffing for more fiber or as a thickening to your sauces. You need lots of Omega 3 during the holidays 7. Make homemade granola or a semi - sweet trail mix for munching before dinner.

National Day is celebrated every 18th of December to commemorate the day in 1878 when the nation united out of conflicting tribes, defeated the Turkish empire in a battle, and vowed allegiance under the leadership of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani.

INGREDIENTS: • 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 lemon, juice of • 1 tablespoon paprika • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste • 1 cup yogurt • 2 tablespoons sumaq • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons black pepper Directions: • Cut chicken breasts into pieces for skewers. • Mix remaining ingredients together to make a marinade. • Add chicken to marinade, mix well and refrigerate in a non-reactive container from 2-8 hours. • Thread chicken on skewers and grill or cook under a broiler.

Chef Wael Jaafar at Al Sultan Brahim Restaurant INGREDIENTS: • 1 medium cucumber, diced • 2 large tomatoes, diced • 4 green onions, chopped • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped roughly • 1 head romaine lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces • 1/4 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves • 1 cup purslane leaves • Fresh thyme leaves • 1 loaf pita, cut into cubes and toasted • 1 cup olive oil • 1/3 cup lemon juice • 2 tbs Pomegranate molasses • 2 teaspoons sumac powder • salt to taste Directions: • In a large bowl, toss together the lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, green onions, parsley, mint, bell pepper, purslane, and thym. Toss with the olive oil, pomegranate molasses and lemon juice, and serve it with the toasted pita bread.

From Knorr® All In One Seasonings INGREDIENTS • ¾ kg meat with bones • 1 large onion, chopped • 3 tablespoons oil • 2 tomatoes, crushed • 2 cloves garlic, sliced • 5 carrots • 2 medium potatoes • 2 zucchinis • 1 cup green peas, frozen • ½ a piece squash, fresh • 2 spoons tomato paste • 8 cups water • ½ a cup cilantro (optional) • 1 teaspoon kabsa spices • Salt • ½ teaspoon turmeric • ½ teaspoon cumin • 1 tablespoon Knorr® All In One Seasonings • Ruqqaq Directions: • In a pot sauté onion until tender. Add meat and stir for 2 minutes, combine garlic, tomato, tomato paste and stir for 3 minutes. Add hot water, cover pot and leave for 45 minutes. • Peel the carrots and zucchini. Cut each into two halves. • Peel the potatoes and cut into medium size pieces. Then peel the squash, take out seeds and cut into medium size pieces. • After cooking meat for 45 minutes, add rinsed vegetables and cook. Add zucchini to vegetables after 15 minutes. • When vegetables are cooked through, add spices, green peas, and cilantro. • Place ruqqaq in a platter, spoon the veggie broth. Let ruqqaq soak well. Repeat steps by forming layers on top of each other. Top ruqqaq with cooked vegetables and meat. Then serve. Note: You may serve ruqqaq and thareed separately (optional).

Las Vegas, Nevada “How I wish that there were more than the twenty-four hours in a day” goes the lyric to Viva Las Vegas, the song Elvis made so famous. And although New York is the city that doesn’t sleep, Vegas is the city that stays up all night and does it in style. Nothing less could be expected of the entertainment capital of the world. This resort desert town has lots to offer: from themed lodging to luxurious hotels, buffets made for royalty, shows, and for the holidays the city adds an extra layer of glow and glitter to its façade. Houston, Texas If ringing in the New Year Southern style is more your cup of tea, or perhaps we should make that eggnog, what better place than the Lone Star State to visit these holidays. Houston—the largest city in Texas- does the holiday theme, as could be expected, in a big way. The city dresses to the nines in its best holiday ensemble. A wonderful place to witness this is Bayou Bend, the former home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg and now the Museum of Fine Arts. The Bend’s annual Yuletide celebration extends throughout the home and grounds recalling American holiday customs. The Downtown Aquarium is also a beautiful place to visit with the family during this time. The underwater-themed complex features shark tunnel tours, a white tiger exhibit, dining among the several giant aquariums, and a 100-foot Ferris wheel with an incredible view of the downtown skyline. If an imaginary trip to the North Pole sounds thrilling than visit Moody Gardens for their festival of lights. It has one of the largest presentations of Christmas lights in Texas; guests will journey to Santa’s workshop, a gingerbread house, and the Nativity while enjoying the serene surroundings of Moody Gardens. ABODE meets Andreas Searty, General Manager of Hilton Doha. At 16 he started as a dish washer, then he worked his way up to where he is today. Here, he talks about his passion for the industry and maintaining top service for his clients. computerized system of reservations. You have the room numbers on the side and a coloured plastic slip. Red means it’s occupied, Yellow it’s dirty and White it’s clean. Today everything is interfaced and computerized. Clients can book online through our system or through booking websites. It’s much easier these days. There’s a saying that the ‘customer is always right’ which is not always the case. How do you and your staff deal with this situation? I think it’s case by case, generally we apply top quality service, top standard that will exceed a clients expectation. We empower all our employees through our ‘Make It Right’ practice, training sessions which we apply worldwide, by giving them authority and power to make sure the guest is happy and satisfied with our services. Qatar’s tourism is booming and many hotels will eventually find their niche in the city. With more and more competition, how do you keep your edge?
A
ndreas projects a positive demeanor which affects everyone, including his employees. He grew up traveling from country to country with his parents, an experience that led to his ambition to become a hotelier. As an hotelier you’re already a globetrotter - is this your first time in the Middle East? Before coming here I was in Germany, then Africa, and 22 years ago I was the resident manager at the Sheraton here in Qatar. I have also worked in Abu Dhabi and Muscat; I have been in the Middle East for quite some time.
How did you start your career as an hotelier? As a dish washer, after I finished my international baccalaureate in high school. I applied to be a dish washer in a restaurant because I wanted to do it. At 16 I knew I want to become a general manager and I knew I had to start at the bottom. The only payment I asked was for a warm meal. I worked as a dish washer before my university course started. From the time you started, what has changed in this industry? Well, when I started everything was manually operated. At the reception there was no computer, we had what they called a ‘Whitney Rack’, a non-

All our 309 rooms and suites are sea view. We have a short walking distance for the clients who wish to go to the beach, banqueting area, restaurants, swimming pools, spa or back to their room. Besides this we have several meeting rooms attracting 2-3 weddings per week with 600-900 capacity. Any advice to young hoteliers? Work is really important and at the same time I would suggest strongly to have fun, enjoy life, share experiences with others and use the fabulous hotels and resorts in Doha. •

South Africa’s Ambassador Mr Saad Cachalia arrived in Qatar this February with his wife Salma, and they are loving their new life in Doha.
Can you describe the relationship between South Africa and Qatar?
Mr Ambassador on behalf of ABODE magazine we would like to welcome you to Qatar. We understand that you had an interesting career prior to becoming South Africa Ambassador- can you tell us some of your background?
new acquaintances every day. I want to learn from Qatar and its people about their own greatness. This I what I love about my work! Qatar has so many different nationalities working in the country and that in itself provides so many opportunities.
I am a lawyer by profession and practiced Human Rights and Public International Law up to 1994 when I became a member of the Limpopo Parliament in one of the 9 provinces of South Africa. I represented the majority party, the African National Congress under the Presidency of Nelson Mandela. In 2006 I was appointed the equivalent of the Provincial Minister of Finance and left in 2011 to be the Advisor of the Provincial Premier. I was then appointed by President Zuma as Ambassador to Qatar.
What was your first impression of Qatar when you first arrived? Has anything changed since then?
Being an Ambassador must be very fulfilling to you professionally and personally- what is it you find most rewarding? I love meeting people and making
I came to Qatar in 2008 as part of an official Limpopo government delegation on an official visit. Never did I then imagine I would return to Doha as Ambassador. This is my first posting as Ambassador so everything is new to me: my job, my new country, my home, the food and even myself as Ambassador! I have grown into Qatar and have found some of my favorite pastimes like pigeon racing, racing dogs, my fascination with falcon hunting and fishing, soccer (I only watch now but used to be a mean striker in my heyday) and I actually became a fan of the Al Sadd football Club.
South Africa and Qatar have a great relationship. Qataris love South Africa as a holiday destination and South Africans love Qatar. There are close to 3000 hard working South Africans in Qatar who play a meaningful role in all aspects of Qatar's advancement. We are proud of that and will work hard towards improving economic ties between our respective countries. South Africa is a strong, advanced and rapidly growing economy with tremendous mineral wealth and is very well advanced in the knowledge sector. We are also a great sporting nation, an outdoor, friendly and a happy. And we are known as the rainbow nation South Africa was a recent host of the World Cup. Do you have any advice for Qatar as 2022 approaches? South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010 and it has been described as one of the best FIFA World Cups ever in every respect. Qatar, I have no doubt, is going to be just as fantastic. Soccer is a sport with the largest following and is regarded as the People's Game. The people of Qatar love soccer and my tip would be to embrace and welcome all true soccer loving nations in 2022. •

Successful people surround themselves with other successful people: that’s why Razan Suliman, co-owner of Bylens, built her dream business with her partner Mohamed Abdullah in 2011. They founded the first Qatari stock photography company in the region. Here, we hear their secrets for business success. is beautiful and spectacular to watch. Many young women would like to have a business of their own and we know it’s not easy. What’s your rule for making your business a success? We had to face our fears. The greatest fear we had when starting our business was the instability of it all, the lack of revenue and not knowing whether we would be able to make ends meet. At first people thought it wouldn’t work and that there was no place for such business. In order to get over this fear of being judged, we surrounded ourselves with people who would support us whether our business succeeded or failed. This gave us the room to build a business without worrying about what our peers were thinking. What advice would you give to future entrepreneurs?
Lesson to be learned: Did you envision having a photography business? Yes, we set out to be independent entrepreneurs, where we could set our own hours, and be our own bosses. But as photographers we struggled not because of a lack of creativity and talent, but because of a lack of business knowledge. We decided to create our own stock photography with a more Qatari feel to better represent the character and personality of any organization. People choose to become entrepreneurs for many reasons. For us, those reasons encompass everything from the need for more schedule flexibility to experiencing a glass ceiling. In our case, we were unsatisfied working for someone else. We had a desire to be our own bosses and lead our own company. We followed our dream, and today we are the owners of the first online Qatari stock image bank.

Qatar National Day is coming, how is your team involved in this joyful occasion? We will be part of this celebration by being there taking photos of those lovely moments, celebrating with everyone here. And of course at night we will enjoy taking some photos of the firework display which
Every entrepreneur should know that being an entrepreneur isn’t always easy. In fact for many of us, there are times when it can be very hard. There will be ups and downs and sometimes more downs than ups. When someone is successful it is easy for others to quickly say “they got lucky” which in our book is just fine. What looks like luck to one person can be the results of years of diligent hard work and effort and energy by someone else. Don’t ever feel defensive if someone says you found success because you were just lucky. Say thank you and share a smile. :) The moment you open up to someone you are trying to do business with about your story, your actions may introduce FUD into your business relationship: FUD as in Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. By staying strong and focused you have a better chance to maintain the status quo and move on without having to rehash stories which will only cause you mental anguish and distract you.•
