From The Desk Of The Chairman Dear friends,
I
t is with great pride and a strong sense of patriotism that we welcome you to our December National Day issue. With another year drawing to a close, we as a nation have much to celebrate. Foremost it is our immense honour to embrace and welcome our new Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as he inaugurates his first National Day as our new leader and continues to unify the nation, paving the way forward for great things to come. With the strong teachings of his predecessor Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir, guiding his way as he assumes his position as head of state, His Highness has already proven himself to be wise, prudent and supportive in upholding the standards for growth and prosperity set forth in the Qatar National Vision 2030. As construction and expansion of infrastructure continues apace across the nation, it’s a sign of things to come as Doha readies itself for an influx of investment across all sectors, as well as new waves of immigrants to enrich its knowledge-based economy. It is this diversity that will continue to propel Qatar into the international spotlight, building a strong multicultural framework for the future, while respecting and retaining our traditional Qatari roots. We must also acknowledge the shining accomplishments of H.H. Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. Her work and advocacy for worldwide education and literacy among youth earned her the prestigious George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service in September. Through the tireless campaign of Her Highness, marginalized children around the world have renewed hope, with access to education, literary resources and writing tools through her efforts as a UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education. Building on her initiatives, we can think of no better example for the heights that our own nation’s youth can reach than at our very own Education City – a hub of learning and innovation made possible under the auspices of Her Highness and Qatar Foundation. We have much to be thankful for this National
Day and equally as much to look forward to in the New Year ahead. As a community, if we all strive to work together under the leadership of our beloved Emir, we will no doubt attain and even surpass our goals – on personal, social, economic and national levels. We at AHB Group are proud to play a part in bringing the accomplishments of our nation to you, our readers. Whether it’s a new exhibit that elevates Qatar’s commitment to arts and culture, or a top-notch sporting event that brings us one step closer to the 2022 World Cup, it is our honour to be an ambassador for all our country has to offer. It is my pleasure to wish all of you the very best this National Day, with high hopes for a prosperous New Year. Ahmed Hassan Bilal, Chairman AHB Group

Qatar National Day is celebrated every 18th of December to commemorate the day in 1878 when the nation united out of conflicting tribes, defeated the Turkish empire in a battle, and vowed allegiance under the leadership of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani. This year commemorates the first year of our new beloved Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani , who is poised to take our nation to great heights.

What are the main challenges for a designer nowadays?
I would say that sourcing for fabrics and items with reasonable prices is my biggest challenge. I am focused on delivering great quality with reasonable prices, but it is very hard here in Qatar as everything is expensive, including tailoring.

Jennifer Concepcion, Sales Coordinator Jennifer said she’d had her hair long for a long time… and it was getting boring! She wants to look chic and fashionable, as Qatar is becoming a hub for fashionistas. Television and magazines keep her abreast of the latest trends and she’s convinced a makeover is all she needs to feel better inside and out.
Before
Natalie’s Hairstyle Tips: 1 Jennifer has a heart shaped face and long thick hair. Jennifer is very funky with her style so I wanted to create the perfect look for her. 2 I undercut the side very short (shaved side), just a panel of the head to create an edgy funky look. 3 To lessen her hair thickness, I started to cut lots of layers through the hair, keeping her long length. Also adding in a sweeping side fringe to exaggerate the shaved side. 4 To remove hair frizziness I applied Osis Smooth and Straight before styling and Thrill Wax Osis to style and define.
Kicki’s Hair Colour Tips: 1 Jennifer has really thick, straight Asian hair. We wanted to do something funky to bring out her style and complement her new haircut. 2 I chose a dark violet colour for a base to frame her face. 3 Then we made a hidden panel in front that goes all the way back behind her ear in a light red-violet colour, to bring out the fringe area. 4 On the other side I made a panel close to the neck in the same colour to bring harmony to the entire look.
Kicki’s Makeup Tips: 1 For a fair/olive skin tone, use some shine into the foundation to brighten the skin. 2 To achieve smoky eyes I used grey/ purple and light pink metallic to highlight. 3 I defined her eyes with a black eyeliner and false eyelashes to make her eyes look bigger.

Debbie Dyson, Housewife Debbie is from Western Australia and has been living in Doha since 2010 with her husband. They have two children and are grandparents to a lovely baby girl! She keeps herself busy with her crafts like quilting, painting and reading and socializing with friends and she said it’s about time freshen up her style and look.
Natalie’s Hairstyle Tips: 1 Debbie’s hair is mid-length with fine to medium texture. She has an oval face shape which is great, as we could be versatile with the haircut. 2 We wanted to take the cut shorter, to jaw length, and make the cut very choppy to give the hair more fullness and texture. 3 As her hair is straight with a slight kink this will be easy to maintain and style for Debbie and still look very classy with a bit of an edge. 4 I used Osis Hold Miracle Mousse on wet hair. Blasted dry and for extreme hold and texture I used Osis Dust It.
Kicki’s Hair Colour Tips: 1 Debbie has been colouring her own hair and it became more yellow-blond, which doesn’t suit her skin tone. 2 She has a warm olive skin tone, so to complement her colour I chose a cold ice-chocolate hue that will frame her face. 3 I created highlights in an ice blond tone to brighten and make the colour funkier for her new haircut.

1 When it comes to the makeup, make sure that skin is clean and well moisturized. I added some eye crème with reflection pigments to make the lines less visible. 2 I chose a dark olive colour foundation with oil for mature skin. 3 Then a puff with loose powder in medium warm tone to make the skin look healthier. To even her skin tone, I continued to the neck and chest area. 4 For the eye shadow I worked with light pink and dark plum colours to bring out her nice green eyes. I defined her eyes with a dark plum/lilac eyeliner. 5 The blusher is dark pinkish/plum, highlighted with shine on her upper cheekbones. 6 For her lips I used a fuchsia/plum to match with the rest of the colour palette.
Our lucky readers enjoyed a full day of pampering at Glow Salon and they even walked away with a brand new outfit, head to toe, courtesy of New Yorker, Ezdan Mall. 53

Perfect Makeup for Your LBD? Compiled by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca Coordinated by Marck Angeles Clothes & Accessories by Monsoon and Shoes by Quiz at City Centre
The Marilyn Monroe Look 1 Red lips and black eye makeup is a stunning variation with a black dress. 2 Use a liquid foundation and buff it well with a foundation blending brush to leave a glowing finish. 3 To realize a dramatic eye use a black eye shadow with a touch of silver and swipe a thick mascara on your lashes. Do not forget to define your eyebrow using a brown pencil – don’t use black, as it makes the eyebrows look too strong. 4 Use black eye pencil inside the eyes on the eyelids. 5 Blusher and highlighter on the cheek area will give a healthy glow on the skin. 6 Dust loose powder around the edge of the lips to keep the red lipstick from bleeding, use a similar shade of red lip liner to define lips and then apply your favourite red lipstick.

Parties are abounding and your perfect LBD is in front of you screaming, “slip me on and enjoy a night out!” One ABODE reader had the dilemma of not knowing what kind of makeup would complement her perfect black dress. We asked Carla from Salam Cosmetics to show us two gorgeous looks.

The Audrey Hepburn Look 1 Start with clean, well moisturized skin. 2 To achieve a flawless look use a luminous foundation. 3 Swipe a touch of blusher in the cheeks area, just a few strokes. 4 For the eyes, a black-grey eye shadow mixed with a violet pinky shadow around the eyelid makes your eyes alluring. 5 Apply a pink gloss on the lips to give a plump and sweet effect. 6 Finish your look with a spritz of perfume.

Ballet Moves
Graceful 1. Exercises with bar
Ballet ABODE met with Dalida Hafez, the Ballet instructor at the Al Gheed Ballet Centre in Lagoona Mall to discover more about this gracious discipline. Anyone from toddlers to 27 can join her classes! Compiled by Marlynne Mallari Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca Ballet Instructor Dalida Hafez
Dalida shares her advice: What kind of shoes must be used for ballet? It is important, especially if you are a beginner, to dance in flat shoes to get the hang of it. When you progress you can start switching to pointed shoes.
2. Exercises in the middle of the classroom
What are the necessary clothes for ballet? Make sure you wear comfortable clothes. Use tights for legs and a fitted top so you can move freely.
When is the best age to start ballet? 3. Dancing in flat shoes
I would say at six years old, for at that time kids begin to focus longer but I also teach kids as young as three, they are so cute and they love to play.
About Ballet: AL GHEED BALLET CLASSES - 6-9 years old every Tuesday & Thursday at 4-5 pm - 10-15 years old every Sunday at 5-6 pm and Wednesday at 6-7 pm - 16 + every Sunday & Tuesday at 7-8 pm
Dance is a wonderful activity for kids, capable of fostering a positive self image in both girls and boys. Ballet teaches a child self confidence, self discipline, poise and grace.
A child introduced to ballet at an early age will likely develop a love of the arts and a passion for rhythm and movement. Most importantly, dancing is lots of fun!

Many parents believe that a child should be enrolled in ballet classes as soon as possible, sometimes as early as the second birthday. Toddlers and preschoolers usually begin with "creative movement" classes instead of structured dance classes. However, it really depends on your child's emotional maturity and personality. Many young girls have dreams of becoming a famous ballerina, so start your child early!

Holiday Health Hazards to Avoid By Dr. Ravinder Mamtani, Associate Dean for Global and Public Health
at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar
Falling ill while on holiday is guaranteed to distract you from the main purpose of being away – having fun with friends and family. These health tips endorsed by Dr. Ravinder Mamtani of Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar can help you prevent three common holiday ailments and to treat them if you do become unwell – you’ll be back to the beach in no time!
Sun Over-Exposure / Heat Stroke
Sunburn While those with fair skin are most at risk of sunburn, darker skin can also be damaged by prolonged exposure to the sun’s powerful rays. Sunburn is not just uncomfortable - it can also lead to serious health problems such as skin cancer.
Prevention: • Limit exposure to direct sunlight between the hours of 11am and 3pm or during the hottest part of the day in your location. • Apply sunscreen lotion with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) appropriate to your skin tone when spending time in the sun. Doctors recommend people with fair skin use sunscreen with an SPF between 15 and 30. Children should use SPF30. • Protect the vulnerable skin of your ears, nose and neck with a broad-brimmed hat while out in the sun. • Re-apply sunscreen every 1 ½ hours and after swimming. • People who are bald or have thinning hair should apply sunscreen to the scalp. Better still, wear a hat. • Protect your eyes with good-quality sunglasses that carry an authentic international standard mark, such as the European CE mark. • Darker skin and black skin can burn if exposed to the sun for too long and should also be protected with sunscreen. Darkskinned people can and do get skin cancer. Doctors estimate that the darkest skin tone is equivalent to an SPF of 15 and recommend all dark-skinned people use SPF 15 sunscreen to protect their skin when out in the sun.
Treatment: • Avoid direct sunlight by staying indoors or covering up with a hat, trousers and long sleeves. • Drink plenty of fluids to replace those lost by sweating. • Cool the skin with a flannel soaked in cold water, or take a cool shower. • Avoid drinking alcohol. • Apply moisturizing creams or after-sun lotion at regular intervals. Creams that contain aloe vera can be helpful. • In cases of severe sunburn, seek professional medical attention.

Serious Infectious Diseases Serious Infectious Diseases Visiting developing countries offers great opportunities to discover new places and cultures, but this can also expose travelers to serious infectious diseases. Prevention is paramount here and it is essential to visit your family doctor several weeks before you embark on your trip to check which vaccines you need for your destination. Preventing serious infectious diseases: • Vaccines protect against serious infection diseases such as hepatitis and tetanus. • The main diseases your doctor may recommend you be vaccinated against are: Diphtheria; Hepatitis B; Meningococcal Meningitis; Rabies; Japanese encephalitis; Rabies; Typhoid; Diphtheria; Dengue Fever and Cholera. • The type of vaccines required will depend upon the country you are visiting. Ask your medical doctor about the risk of contracting these diseases in your chosen holiday destination.
Malaria: Malaria is a serious, sometimes fatal, disease that is spread by mosquito bites. There is currently no malaria vaccine used in clinical practice. Anti-malarial medications are available, which are helpful in malaria prevention. • Prevention of malaria therefore focuses on keeping mosquitos away from your skin. If you visit a malarial region, cover your arms and legs with long sleeves, apply insect repellent frequently and be sure to sleep beneath a mosquito net treated with insect repellent. • If you experience fever while you are in a malarial region or up to a year after you return from your trip, seek immediate medical attention. • Taking the necessary precautions and being alert to the risks to your health while abroad will help keep you and your family safe and well, leaving you all free to enjoy your time together.
ABODE December.indd 61
Digestive Disorders. Digestive Disorder Traveler’s diarrhea and Irritable Bowel symptoms are a common ailment that can really ruin a holiday. Symptoms include watery stools, stomach cramps, gas, bloating, inability to control bowel movements and feeling weak and lethargic. Even worse, very severe diarrhea poses a significant risk to health because it can leave the body dangerously dehydrated and low on essential minerals like sodium and potassium. They myth that the condition is caused by eating unfamiliar or spicy food has been dispelled as it is now known that the bacteria strains E.coli, Shigella and Salmonella are usually to blame. Certain viruses and parasites can also cause diarrhea. However, food does often play a role - most cases of diarrhea are caused by ingesting these bacteria through water or food that has been contaminated by feces. The best way to combat these bacteria is by keeping them out of your body by practicing good hygiene and being careful about what you eat and drink while abroad. Prevention: • Drink bottled water instead of tap water. Check that the seals on bottles are intact before you drink from them. • Don’t take ice in your drinks if you are in a country with poor sanitation. Ice is often made from local tap water and could contain harmful bacteria. • Watch out for salads that may have been washed with local water. • If sanitation is very poor in the country you are visiting, use bottled water to brush your teeth. • Avoid eating in restaurants of questionable quality. Avoid food that has been left out at room temperature for an extended period of time. • Check that foods have been cooked through before eating them. • Avoid use of foods and drinking beverages bought from street vendors. • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after using the toilet. Use running water when available. Make sure any children traveling with you do the same. • Carry antiseptic hand wash or hand wipes with you in case hand-washing facilities are not available when you are out and about.
Treatment: • Take plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Drink bottled water in small sips. • Replace lost minerals with formulated oral hydration solutions, available from pharmacies. • Wash hands extremely thoroughly with soapy and warm water after visiting the toilet to prevent reinfection. • Eat as soon as you feel able to, choosing bland foods that will not upset your stomach. Take small portions and avoid foods that are fatty, very acidic or heavily spiced. • Symptoms of diarrhea should clear up in adults after two to four days, and after five to seven days in children. If symptoms persist longer than this, seek medical attention. • Medications are helpful in treating diarrhea. Consult a heath care professional before using them. • If stools contain blood, seek immediate medical attention. Blood in the stool can be a sign of infection by a parasite, which can cause serious health problems such as liver damage.

Look After Your Eyes
with Proper Nutrition by Christelle Abi Rached, Diet Delights
While most people rely on Bugs Bunny’s old carrot trick to protect their eyes, only a few people are aware of the role that nutrition plays in vision health. When talking about an eye-friendly diet, it is important to note that good nutrition conveys a preventive role rather than a corrective one. In other words, eating right won't improve your visual acuity if you have less than perfect vision; but it will reduce the risk of certain eye diseases, including macular degeneration and cataract formation, which are the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness.
More tips for your eye health: Vitamin E In addition to offering gorgeous skin, vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and an essential player when it comes to eye health. It is thought to protect cells of the eyes from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals, which break down healthy tissue. Being found in very small quantities in food, getting enough vitamin E might be a bit challenging. Considerable food sources include vegetable oils, almonds, pecans, peanuts and peanut butter, wheat germ and sunflower seeds. • Make a habit of adding sunflower seeds or flaxseeds to green salads. • Mix peanut butter and fortified cereals for a healthy eye-friendly snack. • Enhance your morning cereals nutrient content with a shot of almonds or pecans.
Vitamin C
1 Always use sunglasses when you are in direct sunlight and avoid looking straight to the sun 2 When using the computer for long do the 20 exercise: every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds 3 Clean your contact lenses regularly and avoid wearing them more than recommended 4 Stop smoking
There is no surprise in calling it the “C” vitamin, being one of the most essential nutrients for vision. Scientific evidence suggests vitamin C lowers the risk of developing cataracts, and when taken in combination with other essential nutrients, can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration and visual acuity loss. Most fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin C, including oranges, grapefruit, strawberries and papaya, as well as green peppers and tomatoes. • Eat fruits and veggies raw when possible because heat destroys some of this precious vitamin. • Have at least two servings of fruit every day; add them to salads for a change. • Use raw broccoli and sweet peppers as a side dish more often.
Lutein & Zeaxanthin Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants mainly found in fruits and vegetables and the only carotenoids located in the eye. Food sources include green leafy vegetables, orange pepper, kiwi, grapes as well as other foods, such as eggs and corn. Many studies have shown that lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration and cataracts and protect the eyes from sun damage. • Snack on popcorn or corn on the cob seasoned with spices you enjoy. • Add layers of spinach to your next lasagna recipe. • Have at least one cup of green leafy vegetable every day.
Zinc
Is an essential trace mineral or ‘helper molecule.’ It plays a vital role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina in order to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Zinc is found in a wide variety of foods but oysters remain by far the best source of zinc. Other food sources include: red meat, poultry, seafood such as crab and lobsters, and fortified breakfast cereals. • Have seafood such as oysters, lobsters or crab at least once a week • Add grilled chicken to a salad made of chickpeas and green beans • Include more dairies: eat low-fat yogurt for breakfast, have a slice of cheese or drink a low-fat latte.

Holiday Décor: 7 Easy Ways to
Dress up Your Home Suzy Cacic – BetterDecoratingBible.com
Before you spend a fortune on pre-made holiday decorations, why not use your crafty DIY thumb to make your own festive centrepiece, table décor and garlands. If you are planning to deck the halls last-minute this season, don’t sweat it – our experts rounded up 7 easy ways to glam up your home for the holidays in no time.
Have Some Fun with Your Dining Table
Use Natural Elements with a Colour Scheme Red roses aren’t only for Valentines – use them to create a beautiful table centerpiece and mix them up with cranberries, evergreen, pinecones and sparkly ornaments. Use planting urns to stuff the cut roses and leafy greens into, then dip your cranberries and pinecones in glue and roll in glitter. Once dry, scatter them across your dining table for a natural tablescape.
Dressing up your table can do wonders to a holiday meal and create a flawless presentation, even if you aren’t the best cook in town. You can use your table to tie your home’s décor together by using the same colour scheme to connect the dining room to the living room’s holiday tree. Use this as an opportunity to get the kids involved by making fun napkin rings out of colourful cardboard paper, glitter, ribbons, bells, and fun, festive shapes.
Spread The Joy with Cheerful Quotes and Art Swap your regular artwork for famous holiday quotes and art to spread the holiday spirit throughout your home. Some fast solutions to spread the word are by using wall decals, scenic winter tapestries, and even the famous Santa Claus Coca Cola artwork. Try an easy DIY by painting an old frame in black and gold and painting on a sparkling quote for an effective mood lifter.

décor Light up Your Front Entry Accent your front doors with deep colors of evergreen wreath and garland wrapped in tiny red cranberries and pinecones. Tie on extra-wide red ribbons and add two big pots of poinsettias to complete your holiday look and add a graphic punch. Wrap twinkling lights to add a soft glow at night and allow your welcoming holiday door to be seen well from the street.
Match Holiday Décor to Existing Décor
Most holiday colours clash with most interiors and can end up making your home look busy and junky. Instead of using the default red and green, enhance your homes existing hues by using decorations that stand out but complement their existing surroundings. If the colour scheme in your home is mostly whites and grays, use holiday decorations that are silver, turquoise, and pearly white. Try dazzling it up with crystallized napkin rings, sterling silver flatware, and crystal vases filled with glittery twigs or peacock feathers.
Extend Decor Throughout your Whole Home The countdown till the holidays is officially on! If you are cheery like us here at ABODE magazine, you’ve been super busy planning festive décor and decking the halls for the season. There are countless ways to decorate for the holidays including natural décor from the outdoors, classical ornaments, garlands for the mantel or banister, and homemade wreaths. One thing you don’t want to do is stop decorating at your holiday tree – extend your decorations throughout your living, dining, and even bedroom! These celebratory ideas are super easy to do and will have your home flowing with cheer, no matter your decorating style.

How to Budget During the Holidays By Elsbeth Blekkenhorst, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Global Women Qatar
The holiday season is kicking into gear, and with festivities such as Christmas lurking around the corner, you’re likely starting to think about presents for your family and friends, and whether you’ll stay in Qatar or go overseas for vacation. This all will affect your bank account, so ensure you spend wisely with these budgeting tips for the holiday season! Let’s start with the gifts 1. List everyone whom you plan to shop for (friends, relatives, teachers, pets, etc.). 2. Review your finances to determine how much you can afford and how much you want to spend on gifts. Set this figure as your overall holiday gift budget. 3. Look over your gift list, and decide how much you would like to spend on each person. Then, total up the expected spending for all gifts, and make sure it does not exceed the gift budget that you established in step two. 4. Go through your list again, and jot down gift ideas that fall within the budget range you’ve set for each person. There are so many nice gadgets for a nice price. Also think about homemade gifts, these are often more meaningful and most recipients truly appreciate your time and effort. Ideas for creative gift projects are plentiful online.
Travel, Accommodation and Food If you have decided to spend your holiday overseas, also start planning ahead. Some of your travelling expenses, such as passport and visa costs, travel insurance, etc., are expenditures you cannot cut back and if you are planning a vacation far from home, you may also have to add the cost of airfare. However, travelling strategically is the key to make the most of your money and save your hard-earned cash wherever possible. Here are some suggestions on how to plan a trip on a limited budget, while keeping it organized and simple! The holiday destination you pick and the duration of the stay determine the cost of your vacation. You can start by deciding on what you and your family would like to do on this trip. Say you wish for some snow for this year's break, work out a list of snow destinations and then settle on a place that the family wants to visit. Your next task is to find who is offering the best packages to this destination at the lowest prices. Trawl the Internet and call up travel agencies to do an extensive
comparative study before you seal the deal. Great websites are Expedia and Kayak, they can give you a fair idea about the best bargains. Another advantage to knowing about the place you are visiting is that you can give the expensive sightseeing tours a miss and make your own itinerary. One of the best ways of going about it is visiting the country's official tourism website and read their recommendations. If you were lucky to snap a good deal on the holiday package, most of your trip expenses are now fixed and settled. A package tour usually takes care of key expenses such as accommodation, airfares, sightseeing and airport transfers. Other than these, food is the only major out-of-pocket cost. Avoid downtown dining and explore areas outside the main tourist spots. These are comparatively cheaper and will give you a chance to explore the local cuisines as well. Google maps and sites such as Tripadvisor. com can provide you with links to such restaurants. Have a backup plan in case you do not find a suitable place, or the local food does not suit your taste buds. Pay a visit to the grocery store and pick up items like bread, butter, marmalade, snacks, etc., for some quick-fixes. And now that you have wisely budgeted your holiday and gifts, just enjoy!

e r a y d n a c Hardnew hit in the n! tow PAPABUBBLE's Store Manager answers our questions about the colourful and flavourful candy store. 1 How many candy chefs do you have? Currently four, they trained under our master candy chef, then they practice (a lot of practice) for a total of 11 months. 2 Obviously you do custom-made candies. What colours and flavours are the most popular? Fruit mix rock candies are amazingly popular, we can finish around 20KG in 2 weeks. Our clients love banana, apple, pineapple, grape, strawberry, mango and passion fruit flavours. 3 How much does the candy cost? We range from 18 QR for a small bag to 60 QR for 200 gram jar. 4 How many types of candies are there? We have rock candies - the ones with the designs on them; soft candies - munch and crunchy inside; pillow candies - stripped candies feed into the machine and lollipops. 5 How many candies do you make a day? It depends, but we always run out of fruit mix, as there are 13 types of fruits in the mix, we always make them throughout the week. 6 What is the most loved candy? The rose lollipops and our rock candies. 7 Do you have any new flavours? Yes, the pillow candy, apple cinnamon soft candy and the monster mix, which is fun for children.
Custom made lollipops and candy containers are made for corporate clients.
Custom candy orders: • Do you also cater for outside events? Yes we do. We make an incredible candy buffets for birthdays, weddings, engagements. We don't only customize the candies but also the props and arrangements to match the theme of the event. Let’s say it’s a birthday, we would make a big birthday lollipop and have small lollipops with the child’s name on them. • If we order a customized candy, how long will it take? It takes a minimum of one week as everything is handmade, from making the candy into packaging them. Also when we are fully booked everyone has their own order schedule of when the order will be filled.

An Authentic Residence
Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris By Deliah Furcoi
A hotel that is truly a majestic destination all on its own, brimming with history and exemplary service. Nestled just off Champs Elysee, Four Seasons Hotel George V is not only a truly amazing destination in the heart of Paris, it also is a historic building with a glamorous past and vivacious history. This luxurious 8 story landmark was designed by the famous French architects Lefranc and Wybo under the direction of Joel Hillman, the building's American owner. The hotel opened in 1928, in what became known as the roaring twenties, immediately setting new precedents in the hospitality industry. At the time of its opening it was described as being “conceived in the spirit of modern and elegant luxury, and endowed with the latest technological innovations.” The innovations showcased in the grand hotel were amenities such as a telephone in each room, suites with two bathrooms “allowing two people to take a bath at the same time and to be ready to go down to dinner together;” fitted closets; extra-wide corridors on guest floors to eliminate luggage grid-lock;
fire alarms; and an elaborate dumbwaiter system to expedite delivery of hot food from the kitchen to guest rooms. All this luxury came at the cool price tag of 60 million francs, which in today’s currency represents over U.S. $31 million dollars. Today, true to its historic past, the George V still is a living and thriving symbol of elegance and luxury. Lovingly restored, this unique gem features 18th century tapestries and an exquisite art collection, 244 luxury guest rooms, and exudes the kind of elegance, and charm that are associated with the City of light.
Michelin Star Restaurants to enjoy! The Le Cinq is the George V’s decadent French cuisine restaurant. With beautiful views of the Hotel's courtyard and garden, Le Cinq is a very elegant dining room, dressed in grey and gold. The tablecloths, china and silver were all created specifically for this legendary
hotel. The menu draws upon classic French culinary techniques and also embrace newer, lighter cooking styles, always incorporating the freshest regional ingredients. A children's menu is available on request. La Galerie Both the heart and soul of the Hotel, La Galerie showcases beautiful Flemish tapestries, 19th-century paintings and furniture, as well as many exquisite objets d'art. The atmosphere is elegant and peaceful. A pianist plays every day at 3:00 pm. This is the best spot for people-watching.
Spa services The hotel boats a delightfully serene and tranquil designer spa. Dressed in restful, muted colours and decorated with 18thcentury prints, the Spa –is the finest, most luxurious hotel spa in Paris! It offers weary travelers, couples and business men alike a comprehensive menu of skin and body treatments, as well as saunas, whirlpools to

Los Almendros de San Lorenzo
a Spanish Colonial gem in the heart of El Salvador by Victor M Lagos Pizzati Photography: Pascal Lebailly
Suchitoto is a breathtakingly beautiful colonial town just 25 miles outside the capital of El Salvador. Formerly it was the site of the country’s first capital, founded by the Spanish in 1525. Today it’s a unique colonial village that is totally preserved and full of charm, culture and tradition. Its beautiful historic church, art galleries, museums and theatre retain the period charm of centuries gone by and have made this town El Salvador’s main cultural hub. You can stroll through the colourful food market and go for a quiet promenade on the cobbled streets, which
are flanked by charming homes many with their original iron balconies. In many ways time has stopped here and you need time to take it all in.
Where To Stay In this unexpected cultural destination we have discovered a hospitality treasure: Los Almendros de San Lorenzo, which has been called one of the best boutique hotels in El Salvador and from the beginning it was an instant success. Opened in 2005, after a 17-month renovation of a 200-year-old colonial mansion, the hotel is the
creation of a French fashion executive and a former El Salvadorian diplomat who fell in love with Suchitoto and all its charm. The hotel tastefully melds traditional Central American design and décor with French antiques and modern art collected and displayed with the couple’s elegant, easy style. The hotel has only 11 rooms, including two suites (one with an interior fountain) and two sprawling duplexes. A pool, relaxing stone courtyards, a gourmet restaurant (be sure to try the local sausage appetizer plate) and the charming resident Boston Terrier, Lorenzo, round out the stylish villa vibe. The owners’ latest clever move is the opening of what they call their “honeymoon

How to get there Your best bet is to contact the owner (Mr. Pascaul Lebailly) who can arrange all transportation from El Salvador’s Comalapa International Airport, both to Suchitoto and Maculis Beach. He can also arrange for other tour packages to visit other areas.

Following the announcement from Qatar Airways that June 2014 will bring non stop flights to the beautiful and tropical city of Miami. By Francesca Cruz
Please fasten your seat belts, make sure your trays are in an upright position, store all carry-ons, and enjoy the flight: This paradisiacal peninsula offers an opportunity for adventure, enchantment and history— what more could a traveler ask for? While most jet to Europe or Asia as the collective fad du jour; Florida captures it all in an ideal vacation destination. Great nightlife? Check! A collection of theme parks and National Wildlife preserve? Check! Great dining, shopping, beautiful beaches, year-round Miami, Florida
sunshine—check, check, check! It doesn’t take much convincing, does it? Key West We start off on the southernmost point: Key West. The natives, or the Conchs—as they are called, are an impassioned assemblage of merry rogues that know how to celebrate life and sunsets like nobody’s business. It is no wonder Hemingway was so enamoured of this Eden. With its history of haunted happenings you’d be a silly ghoul not to enjoy the Ghost & Gravestone’s trolley tour (it’s even been featured in both the Sci-fi and Travel Channel), plenty of cozy restaurants, loads of options for live music and some of the best seafood in the world. Heading north past Key West and about 25 miles from Key Largo you’ll find the second oldest city in South Florida: Homestead. The drive there is all about letting the wind blow through your hair and seeing the vegetation in this part of town. It’s a major
agricultural area and the first stop is the Fruit and Spice Park. It is the only tropical botanical garden of its kind in the United States. The Park showcases 150 varieties of mango, 75 different kinds of bananas, in total over 500 varieties of fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs and nuts, all in its unique 37acre public facility where visitors are invited to take part in tastings. While on the eco kick, and just a mere 40-minute drive from Homestead, jump at the opportunity to venture into ‘the river of grass’, as it was once referred to. Witness the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States: Everglades National Park. With its unbelievable array of exotic birds—over 1000 species of plants and wildlife that roam free, it’s a unique trip into the wetlands. travel mud and your hair gleaming with natural highlights from the great outdoors, it is time to rejoin civilization with a 50-minute car ride north to Miami. Miami You will find great shopping in the Dolphin Mall Outlet in the city of Doral, as well as high-end shopping in the Village of Merrick Park, and Bal Harbour Shops, or head northeast to South Beach for a full kaleidoscope of activities: shopping, dining, beaches and nightlife. Enjoy dinner at the Delano, the SLS or the W hotel if fine dining is what appeals most to you. For a meal that won’t break the bank and a great place to people watch, stroll to famous Lincoln Road. It’s an 8-block long pedestrian walkway bustling with cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and retail stores. Don’t forget to splash around in the famous
beaches, go rollerblading down the lined pathway adjacent to the water, or join a volleyball game just a hop and skip away from Ocean Drive. South Beach is just as exciting as you’ve imagined it to be, and the pastel art deco buildings cast the perfect backdrop for some fun in the sun. The Palm Beaches From Miami to a city of history and glamour, while F. Scott and Zelda caroused the Long Island Gold Coast in the roaring 20s attending lavish parties in search of fodder for the Beautiful & the Damned and so many of Fitzgerald’s literary treasures, Florida had its version of the place where the lovely and the advantageous frolicked: The Palm Beaches. A grand staple and haven for the ‘who’s who’ of American aristocracy, is and has always
Miami Beach, Florida
been, the Breakers Hotel. It’s been a stop for patrons of the likes of the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, the Astors, Andre Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, heads of state, and later the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, dined alfresco while enjoying the Atlantic Coast, relaxing at the Mediterranean style beach club reminiscent of St. Tropez, and simply immersing themselves in the lavishness that is such a vestige. Palm Beach is all about luxury, relaxation, and the crème de la crème in refined shopping. Visit Worth Avenue for antiques, exquisite gifts and a gourmet lunch or dinner, then take a bicycle tour through the city, visiting the old Kennedy family compound. If leisure and opulence is your cup of tea, this is the place to highlight on your itinerary. Orlando and Kissimmee We change scenery from the grandiose, to the thrills and theme parks of Orlando. From the Magic Kingdom, to an assortment of water parks—Orlando and the Kissimmee area is all about family fun. Head to the Kennedy Space Center for an out of this world experience—no really, like out of this world and into space, kind of adventure. It truly is mankind’s ultimate journey. The centre is the only place in the world where you can tour launch areas, see giant space rocks, take part in spaceflight simulation and view a launch. Weeki Wachee Springs From the void that is space we venture to the depths of the sea visiting Neptune’s fair maidens—Mermaids. Only an hour’s drive north and you arrive at Weeki Wachee Springs: the City of Live Mermaids. Take a boat down the crystalline river and enter the mysterious underwater world of mermaids, manatees, turtles and of course blue bubbles. Visitors can pose with mermaids, and even swim in the spring with the new Sea Diver program. Here is your opportunity to experience Florida by taking part in adventures that integrate the beautiful terrain, native wildlife, historical places, and of course fantastic lore of this unique peninsula.

people How long have you been in Doha? A: I came to Doha in 2006, to open our first, and until now only El Salvadorian Embassy in the region.
How would you describe the Latino community in Doha? A: The Latino community in Doha is a vibrant, hard working and respectful group of professionals and their families who reflect the rich diversity of our societies in Latin America, yet maintain close cultural bonds among themselves across national boundaries. Latinos are known to be fun, optimistic, generous, warm and open individuals with strong family values and community ties, and they are very happy and proud to be contributing to the rapid development of their host country.
How many El Salvadorian residents live currently in Qatar? A: The El Salvadorian community is small compared to other nationalities. There are approximately 125 nationals, including family members, and it keeps growing. Since we have opened the Embassy there have been around a dozen El Salvadorian babies being born in Qatar.
How do you interact with your community? Do you have any specific events happening in 2014? A: Being a small community allows us to keep a close and personal interaction with most members. I personally know most of my fellow Salvadorian expatriates and have many opportunities to discuss their work and life in Qatar. We also try to organize some events in the Embassy to give them
the opportunity to meet other nationals that they normally don’t see as often. For next year we are actually planning to start a program of regular meetings among the community, what I will call the Salvadorian “Majlis”: Every other month we will have an open door afternoon or evening at the Embassy, to share some Salvadorian coffee and delicious national sweets, in the best Arab tradition of hospitality.
El Salvador is the smallest country of Central America. Can you describe it in few words? A: El Salvador is roughly twice the size of the State of Qatar, with an approximate population of 6.3 million people with a majority of mixed indigenous and European descent. Being heavily populated, our human capital is both our biggest challenge and most valuable resource. We enjoy a wonderful mild tropical weather with a generous rainy season which runs from May till October. Our economy, agricultural and services based, is small but growing steadily healthy and strongly linked with all Central and North America and in lesser degree to Europe, all thanks to far-reaching liberal trade and integration agreements. Politically it is a stable democratic Republic, with a President being elected every 5 years. All these factors, plus our strategic location in the heart of the Americas, make El Salvador an attractive and safe option for foreign investments and trade opportunities.
Tourism is a big resource for El Salvador. How are you promoting it from Qatar?
A: Even though our country might seem a bit far, it’s just 2-3 hours away from southern US cities like Houston or Miami. Now with Qatar Airways direct flights to these cities, El Salvador is just one short stopover away. We have excellent connectivity with North and Central American cities, so we tend to promote our country not only as a single destination but a part of a potential regional tour that will give the visitor more out of their investment. Surfing, deep sea fishing, diving, unspoiled beaches, majestic volcanoes, nature trails and colourful culture in charming little pueblos is just part of the rich menu offered to our guests.
What are the main ties between El Salvador and Qatar? A: El Salvador and Qatar are just at the beginning of building their relationship. We established diplomatic relations only recently, in the last decade, but we have moved in the right direction through the mutual opening of resident Embassies, which helped increase our interaction and brings us closer. We are in the process of knowing each other better and creating the necessary legal and institutional framework to facilitate the interaction of our private sectors, which in the end are the main players in the bilateral ties among countries. Politically Qatar and El Salvador share many foreign policy goals and even cultural values. This has been the base of a solid cooperation in the multilateral arena and now is fueling our bilateral process.

ABODE meets With more than 20 years in the hospitality business, Ayman Lofty, General Manager of Wyndham Grand Regency Doha, has seen Qatar emerge from a barren land to being the richest country in the world —and boasting a plethora of hotels, each looking to find their niche in the luxury market. He’s learned that treading wisely in this ever-evolving industry is the key to stay on top in his trade.
What is your typical day LIKE? I normally start my day by reviewing the figures before setting on for engagements. Meeting with the team is a must every day including the property inspection routine. I usually end up the day by socializing with clients. The décor of the hotel looks impressive, can you tell us more about these changes? This concept was conceived through the ingenuity of the owner, Mr. Ibrahim Al Asmakh, as he envisions to transform the hotel’s identity to an art hub in pursuit to integrate arts and culture as a way of life. All interiors and fittings have been meticulously selected in our efforts to achieve sophistication without compromising comfortability. The lightings completes the entire impression as the chandeliers on display are designed and manufactured by the well-known glassmakers in Italy, Murano, depicting authentic artistry.
