Things To Consider When Buying A Winter Coat Your winter coat should be the right size and fit. Overly large coats will make you look bigger, and small coats will show bulges. Short coats are great if you are petite or of average height. Consider the fabric and weight of the coat. Very heavy or bulky coats will make a petite person look swamped. If you have a larger bust, look for a coat with "v" neck. Remember to select coats with impeccable tailoring to add layers of warmth .

Body Shape Advice

Best styles for busty figures

Fur collar River Island {589 QR}

1 Busty - Single-breasted coats that are not bulky with large buttons, a single button, or a belt, will look great. Keep length no longer than mid-thigh, your legs can take some of the focus away from your breasts. 2 Full Figure or plus-size woman – Flared coat styles work best. Try a coat with an empire waist to make you look slimmer. Boldhued coats with clean cuts accentuate your curves and take the attention away. Make sure the coat covers your bottom and doesn’t accentuate problem areas. 3 Hourglass figure –Any fitted and welltailored coat works well. A military style coat with a belt to accentuate a small waist is best.

Visnja This issue’s cover girl by Francesca Moser

25 year old Visnja has been modeling for the last 7 years. She was born in Croatia and brought up in Serbia.

How did you start modeling? I was approached by an agent in Belgrade, then I went on to win the final of a Ford model contest in my country. This was the springboard I needed - shortly afterwards I moved to the US and started modeling in New York. Where is your main base these days? At the moment I’m based between Milan, Dubai, Istanbul and Munich. It’s hard work, but I love it! What do you like the most about your job? And what don’t you like? I love traveling and meeting new people from different cultures, as it opens you up to a lot of great experiences. I don't like that I never stay long enough in one place, and most of the time I miss my family and friends. What’s the most glamorous job you have done so far? My most glamorous job would

I love yoga, try to eat “healthy and i never say no to a few sweets. ” be last year in Istanbul. It was a big advertising campaign for a jewellery brand. I was wearing very expensive pieces and I was pampered like a star. What are your plans for the future? Modeling is highly unpredictable and an unstable business. I have got to focus on other plans. I want to be sure about my future.

Who is your favorite Designer? Balmain, Isabel Marant and Tom Ford are top of my list. What is your beauty secret? How do you keep fit? I drink a lot of water, try to laugh all the time, dance and spend as much time as possible on the beach. I love yoga, try to eat healthy and I never say no to a few sweets.

How to look years younger By Moona Masri-Whitice

Last year we lost Charla Krupp, an icon in the beauty and fashion industry to breast cancer. In her honour I have listed a few of Krupp’s sage fashion dos and don'ts .

Charla's Advice: Cut Some Bangs “Nothing ages you like too short bangs - too long hair parted down the middle - helmet head - high hair - updo visibly thinning hair.”

It’s amazing how a few sculpted ounces of plastic and metal have a definite impact on your style, they can make you look either edgy or dowdy. Your glasses should be an investment in style as they have a powerful impact on your face. You should always invest in three pairs, one for the office, one for the weekend and one for more formal occasions.

Bangs are an inexpensive and easy way to Chic up your hair style, accentuating Un-Match Your Wardrobe the positive and camouflaging a “Nothing ages you like outfits that are multitude of sins, like receding hairlines and forehead wrinkles. Beauty Q&A Make Up For Ever answers your beauty dilemmas… Q.

Q.

How do I keep my skin healthy during winter?

I have eye luggage! I call them eye luggage because they’re too big to be eye bags! How do I hide them?

A. Every woman should have a skin

care routine based on her skin type even before applying her makeup.

A.

You can easily camouflage them with makeup, but it is essential to use the right products and shades. First, apply HD Elixir around the eyes, then use Lift Concealer to naturally improve the skin tone and smooth the lines around the eyes. Make sure to choose the closest colour to your skin to avoid highlighting them.

Start with HD Elixir, a unique serum which prepares the skin for makeup. It provides instant radiance and long-lasting hydration to the skin. Always make sure you apply a primer before your foundation, try the HD Primer which is a microperfecting base that suits all types of skin. HD Primer nourishes, moisturizes and softens the skin, creating a glowing effect. It creates a protective layer on the skin allowing the foundation to glide on easily and to last longer.

Q.

I have light olive skin, what type of foundation should I use?

A.

Warm skin tones such as

yours look best in “earth tones” which include yellows, oranges and browns. You can start by applying HD Primer #6 in Apricot followed by applying a yellow based foundation such as MAKE UP FOR EVER’s HD

Foundation #123 Desert or #127 Dark Sand. HD Foundation is an oil-free medium-to-full coverage liquid foundation which hides imperfections and corrects the ave If you h emma? il d ty u a bea d your n e s e s Plea s to n o ti s e u om q eqatar.c

complexion, leaving skin looking

Q.

I have huge eyes, and I want to play with them by putting on some colour, but I don’t know where to start. I only use brown, what other colours can I use?

A.

You can go for any colour you like as long as it is dark and matte, especially on the outer corners of the eyes because they will help define and shape the eyes. The easiest way to achieve this look is to blend Aqua Shadow in dark colours such as navy blue and black matte. This waterproof eyeshadow pencil is very easy to use,can be applied in seconds, and requires minimal to no touch-ups, even in extreme conditions.

Q.

I have full lips, like Angelina Jolie, but they are always dry and they have some discoloration, although I am not a smoker. Are there any tips on how to keep them healthy?

A.

You should use lip balm on a daily

basis. However, before applying your lipstick, blend a creamy texture lip liner such as MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Aqua Lip on the entire lips then proceed with your lipstick. Aqua Lip is waterproof so it guarantees long-lasting results as well.

Make-Up & Style Make Over The New Year is an opportunity to experiment with your make-up and style – but what cosmetics or outfits should you be shopping for after the festive season? ABODE, along with Guerlain’s make-up senior artist, roped in two women to inject colour into their busy lifestyles.

Name: Celia Chauhan Occupation: Wife and mother

Celia is a thyroid cancer survivor. When she learned about her diagnosis, her perspective changed and she was thankful that her family was always by her side. The treatment has had a negative impact on her hair and skin and this was an opportunity for our experts to bring back flair and vibrancy after her treatment.

3 Easy Make Up Tips to Achieve a Natural Look 1 For an active woman like Celia, it’s best to go for a natural look. I used Parure de Lumiere foundation followed by a pressed powder. 2 To achieve the “sultry eyes” look, I used a light coloured eye shadow and dark colour only at the corner. 3 Finally, I added colour to the apple of the cheeks and lips.

Style Tip If you are petite and you want to elongate your legs, wear a dress an inch higher than your knees to create an illusion of height and finish the look with a lovely pair of heels.

Behind the SCENES

With MAC & Franck Provost at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2012 ABODE got up close and personal, with the two of the best brands in beauty at DTFF and witnessed what it really takes to look so glamorous. DRAMATIC EYES

MAC Fluidline Liner in Blacktrack proved to be the eye liner in most demand during the festival. Its long lasting formula was used to create a variety of soft to dramatic styles of liner using a MAC #209 Liner Brush, used to define eye brows at times too.

Colourful make up took centre-stage at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Smoky eyes with a brighter colored line on the lower eye was a popular trend. To recreate this look try MAC Pearlglide Pencils that come in a variety of shades from rich purple & midnight navy blue to bronze & black and feature a subtle hint of sparkle. Bright lips were huge too. Actresses opted for statement shades such as MAC Lady Danger, a head-turning shade of orange and red and Girl About Town, a dramatic fuchsia shade. For the ultimate high shine add MAC Dazzleglass Lipgloss.

RADIANT SKIN

Flawless long lasting skin is key to any evening event. MAC Prolong Wear Foundation perfects the skin and leaves a natural matte finish. Its long wearing formula will give you a fresh look.

oral health by dr rami shinnawie d.d.s. from doha dental

Dental cavities and periodontal diseases are now being linked to much greater health concerns than just poor oral health. Make sure you keep your pearly whites clean, floss daily and visit your dentist at least twice a year.

Q.

A.

What is Invisalign and how is it different to regular braces? “Invisalign is a highly sophisticated and patented technology that is a very convenient, and visually appealing alternative to straightening teeth through traditional wire braces. The clear trays can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing. Patients don't have to alter their diet, can enjoy biting on a crunchy apple, or chewing a steak, for example, which would be tricky with traditional braces. With Invisalign, dental hygiene is so much easier than brushing and flossing in between wires. Patients with traditional wire braces are much more likely to have cavities during the treatment because they have difficulty brushing and flossing correctly, leaving food particles and bacteria in between the teeth.

Dr. Rami Recommends: My family and I like to use CREST Complete Multi-Benefit with Whitening and Scope toothpaste, Oral-B Complete SATINFLOSS, Oral B electric toothbrushes with round heads, a tongue scraper, and Listerine or Scope as an occasional mouthwash.

5 Steps to teach your kids to brush correctly: 1 Show them that only a pea size amount of toothpaste is necessary and not a big squeeze. 2 Kids should brush in a circular motion on all surfaces. 3 Ask them to put their teeth together to gain access to the lower front teeth. 4 Ask them to swirl the water in their mouth three times and spit it out to get rid of all the bacteria and excess toothpaste. 5 Finally, demonstrate to them how to do it correctly by brushing their teeth in front of a mirror.

Q.

My teeth are excessively stained due to coffee and sodas, what shall I do?

A.

Depending on the degree of discoloration on your teeth, visit your dentist. Your teeth may need to be professionally cleaned using an ultrasonic machine and whitened under the supervision of a dentist with stronger active ingredients than those found in over the counter products.

Dr Rami Shinnawie, American Board Certified- A graduate of Creighton University in the USA and Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies USA with 11 years of experience specializing in Veneers, Invisalign and Cosmetic Restorative Dentistry. Email: dohadental@yahoo.com

Q.

Do over the counter teeth whiteners actually work?

A.

Over the counter whiteners and whitening toothpastes are very helpful to maintain your lighter shade of teeth and fight the formation of stains from coffee, tea, soya sauce, red wine, and smoking. They will naturally be more diluted than prescription whiteners available through the Dental Office. As with any medication, stronger prescriptions should be monitored by a healthcare professional.

Lower back Fitness

exercises to improve core strength and reduce lower back pain, improve spine mobility and relax your back muscles. By Jay Koodagoda, Health Club Manager Photography Jessie Palanca

Many people, young and old, suffer from back pain. This may be due to poor posture, weak back muscles, muscle spasms, or general physical stress. To avoid back problems and to reduce the risk of back injuries, try the following exercises. Prior to doing any of these exercises, it’s recommended that you consult your doctor. Always begin with warm up exercises.

Hips Raises Lie down and keep your face up, placing your arms by the side of your hips. Lift your hips upwards until your back is in line with the knees. Pause then repeat for 12-15 repetitions. Ensure you tighten up your abs while you are performing this exercise.

Marching Plank Lie down so that you are on your side, keeping the body straight. Place your upper arms on your hips in a bent position, with your arms below your body at a 90 degree angle. While maintaining this position, bring your knees to the 90 degree position and pause, then do 6-8 repetitions.

fitness Flat Hyperextension Lie on your chest on a flat surface or bench with your ankles raised, both arms stretched forward. Hyperextend your back (raise your upper body back) as shown, pause for 15 seconds and go back to the recovery position. Repeat for 3 sets. This is ideal for strengthening and building strong lower back muscles. You can do this twice a day.

Core Bridge Lie face down, with your elbows bent to 90 degrees as shown. Stretch your legs so that you are on your toes. Hold this position for 20 seconds, making sure you tighten your abs for good results. Perform 2 sets for 20 seconds.

Back Press Rest on your forearms and then extend your back as shown, keeping your head and neck in line with the rest of your spine. Pause for 3 seconds, relax, breathe normally and repeat 10-15 times. Back Press ups can relieve lower back pain by stretching the abdominal muscles, relieving tightness in the mid-section.

Knee to Chest This exercise is well known for reducing lower back pain and stretches for your hip and gluteal muscles. Keep your tailbone on the floor, with one knee bent and the other leg straight. Hold each stretch for 15 seconds with both leg and repeat 3 times.

Enjoy your core and back exercises. Do not continue if you start to feel unusual back strain while performing any of the above exercises.

Sugar addiction battLe it and win

by Gloria Duran-Renderos, Nutrition Consultant, B.SC, M.P.H.

Candy bars, cookies, chocolates, ice cream, cakes, pastries. Can you stop eating them - or are you addicted?

D

o you feel the need to eat sugar when you have an emotional crisis? Can you control the amount you eat after the first bite? Excessive sugar consumption is linked to diseases such as diabetes, hypoglycemia, high triglycerides, autism, hyperactivity, and depression. Many nutrition counselors will say that the best thing is to avoid it, but this is easier said than done. Sugar addiction is just like an addiction to a drug, or alcohol dependency and might even require professional support and behavior modification.

The beginning of Sugar Addiction: Sugar addiction begins at birth. Human milk and infant formulas are slightly sweet, so even as babies, human beings begin to recognize the pleasure of eating sweet foods. It all happens in the brain. After receiving the taste bud signal, the brain releases dopamine, inducing a feeling of pleasure. That pleasure is the beginning of the craving of sweets and high sugar content foods as we grow. Addiction is reinforced when well meaning caretakers continue feeding babies and small children all types of sweet goodies, either as a reward or

46

simply as a dessert. Addiction can become harmful in the case of a diabetics, both adults and children who hide their sugar intake from family members even if they realize they are harming themselves. Presently, more and more health care professionals advise us to reduce our calorie intake and in some cases to even remove refined sugar from our daily diet due to the fact that obesity has risen to epidemic proportions around the world.

What can you do if are addicted to sugar and sweets? Take the following test to see how you measure up when it comes to sugar intake. Although there are

many tests you can take to find out if you suffer from sugar addiction, the test that follows is my own test and how I began to deal with my sugar addiction problem.

new year new you-health

SUGAR ADDICTION TEST: 1) Have you tried many times to cut sugar in your diet without success? 2) When you don't eat sweets or sugary foods during the day, do you feel dizzy and light headed or get a headache or feel moody or nervous? 3) When you go out to eat, can you skip desserts? and if so, do you go home and have something sweet as soon as you arrive? 4) When you eat cookies, cake, pastries and ice cream, can you stop after the first bite or do you have to finish the “whole thing”? 5) When you come home after work or school, do you go directly to the refrigerator and look for something sweet to eat? 6) Do you like all of your drinks with sugar or sweetened ? 7) Can you drink coffee by itself (black) without sugar or do you need to add sugar ? Can you have coffee alone without a dessert? IF YOU HAVE ANSWERED 3 OR MORE OF THE ABOVE, YOU ARE MOST PROBABLY ADDICTED TO SUGAR. To lower your sugar intake, try my THREE WEEK PLAN.

THREE WEEK PLAN TO CONTROL SUGAR ADDICTION:

1st Week: TAKING CONTROL

a) Acknowledge your sugar addiction. b) Re-train your brain to think you do not like sweets or sugar with positive affirmative statements such like, “I will take control of my sugar addiction.” This is the most important step. It might take weeks or months to retrain the brain to desire other foods for pleasure. But, do not give up. c) Take green coffee bean supplements. d) drink green tea without sugar any time during the day.

Here are some tips for curbing sugar cravings when they hit: 1. Choose fruit – fruits are a fantastic snack to satisfy your sweet tooth. Choose fruits that are lower on the glycemic index – that means they cause less of a blood sugar spike after eating (usually because they are higher in fiber and lower in sugar). Examples include: apples, apricots, oranges, mango, dates, peaches, and pears. 2. Drink More Water – We often confuse sensations of hunger and thirst. When a craving for sugar hits you, try drinking a glass of water first. 3. Exercise – Food cravings can be stopped in their tracks by engaging in some mild exercise. The next time you get a craving, take a 10 minute walk. You’ll benefit from the fresh air, the exercise and your cravings will disappear. 4. Eat Nuts – Nuts are one of nature’s perfect snacks. They are high in protein and healthy fats. They are also filling and can quickly wipe out hunger and food cravings. Try pecans, walnuts, almonds and brazil nuts. Nut butters are also a delicious way to include nuts in your diet. Try some nut butter spread on a piece of spelt bread or a Ryvita cracker. 5. Nutritional Supplements – There are a number of supplements that can support you as you conquer your sugar addiction. Supplements that help control blood sugar – such as chromium, B vitamins (especially biotin and niacin), vanadium, amino acids, alpha lipoic acid and gymnema sylvestre (an Ayurvedic plant medicine) can all help manage cravings. Supplements should only be used under the care of a qualified Naturopathic Doctor. 47

3rd Week:

a) Continue the positive statements therapy

b) Continue with the second week’s modified new habits c) Cook vegetables such as carrots and beets, sweet potatoes and eat them slowly, trying to sense their natural sweetness. You will be amazed how your taste buds have changed‌!

Does sweet craving drive you crazy? Do you crave sugar all the time?... Sugar craving is a form of addiction similar to those produced by drug withdrawal.

a healthy habit It takes 21 days to change a habit, but changing food habits might take longer because they are profoundly linked to the pleasures of our entire life. But I know for sure how it feels when one overcomes sugar addiction. Your energy level will be stable during the day and your whole being will feel refreshed by a new and healthier way of eating. ****Remember, some forms of sugar do play an important part of our daily diet. Therefore, if you can't give it up completely, the challenge is to harness and take control of the amount of sugar you consume during the day and reduce it to healthier levels.

A Dr. Smita Naram is a world renowned Ayurvedic practitioner and has been a specialist in Panchakarma for more than 25 years. As the founder of Ayushakti Ayurveda Pvt. yurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements: air, fire, water, earth and ether. These elements are represented in humans by three "doshas", or energies: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When any of the doshas accumulate in the body beyond their desirable limit, the body loses its balance. Every individual has a distinct balance, and our health and well-being depends on achieving and maintaining the right balance of the 3 doshas. Ayurveda suggests specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines to help individuals to reduce the excess dosha. By reading your pulse, Ayurvedic doctors can discern what is happening inside your body, mind and emotions and can advise you as to the exact treatment required for you to achieve optimal health and wellness. Panchakarma is one of the most important treatments in Ayurveda. Panchakarma is a cleansing process which flushes out the toxins accumulated in various areas (systems) of the body which not only cause diseases but actually damage organs and speed up the ageing process.

1. Positive lifestyle makes a big difference Chronic illnesses in general are diseases of mind, body and spirit.

A proactive and positive spirit will help the ill individual to be a survivor. Learn to have a positive mindset, a loving and forgiving spirit and learn to relax and enjoy life. Practicing light exercise and deep breathing can help to get more oxygen to the cellular level.

2. A balanced DIETARY REGIME is key Everything you eat affects your body, therefore, your diet plays an important role in improving the quality of your life. An effective way to starve unhealthy cells like cancer is by not feeding them processed, sugary and commercial foods. Completely stop taking (or reduce) sugar, salt, acidic foods like tomato, lemon, red meat like beef, milk and dairy products, tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, cold and fizzy drinks, wheat, fermented products, spicy and sour food. Instead, consume a diet made up of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, nuts and a few fruits to help the body transform into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be cooked food, including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells, drink fresh

Next 5 days: Vegetable soups, juices, and 3 glasses of fresh juice made of apple, carrot, and pomegranate. Then return to your normal diet. Follow this detox diet every couple of months to improve the quality of your life. Powerful Home Remedy to rejuvenate cells, improve immunity and prevent further relapse 1. prostate cancer for a year. Bob’s doctor suggested surgery but he advised Bob to implement a few dietary changes to clean his stomach before surgery or else the surgery would be complicated. Bob visited Dr Smita Naram in Australia during her Health Clinic Tour. She suggested a detox diet and panchakarma (cleansing treatment) for him. To get the full benefit he immediately traveled to Mumbai and carried out the panchakarma program, staying a month. After the treatment, not only was his prostate tumor size reduced by 15% he also achieved a healthy waistline and his stomach was cleaned. His doctor was amazed to see the results and said he had never seen such a successful cleansing! Later, Bob's surgery was a great success and he hardly needed any chemo or radiation.

Ayushakti’s herbal formulations help to relieve pain, improve quality of life and prolong life span. These formulations effectively help to prevent recurrence in those who have already been treated by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery too. 51

Time to Declutter

There’s no better time than the beginning of New Year to get organized and clear out the clutter. Here is expert advice on how to get started. By Jacqueline Bodnar

I

f there’s one thing most of us have in common, it’s that we’re strapped for time. And yet we are often spending time searching for a bill that needs paying or looking for that blue skirt. Believe it or not, all those things are ways that your home and life are cluttered. Once you de-clutter, you can move about, free from the added burden of tripping over possessions that slow you down. Why It Matters Some people may be wondering how having a messy kitchen, a disorganized closet or a chaotic living room, could possibly be

60

related to how they feel and how well they accomplish their daily tasks. But it does matter. A cluttered home often reaches far beyond the doorstep of the house. And taming the mess could set you on the path to seeing improvements in other areas of your life. We all get caught up in our daily lives and don’t give much thought to keeping things uncluttered. But getting organized and staying that way can make a big difference. Taking small steps each week toward the goal of having order in your home will pay off. “The benefits you experience if you

are organized in your home areas will help reduce your stress, allowing you to enjoy and concentrate on what is most important to you and your family,” adds Cox.

ABODE asked two professional organizers for their expert advice, Terri Cox, owner of Organized by Teri, whose website is OrganizedByTerri.com, and Michelle Schwibinger, a professional organizer with Organize It!, from www.totalorder.com

dècor

here are their Decluttering Tips:

Terri TELLS US why cleanliness matters. We asked Terri Cox to explain why it’s important to declutter our homes. She advised that essentially, when things aren’t cluttered, it saves a lot of time. It makes finding things in the kitchen to prepare a meal easier. It makes searching for that document from three years ago a breeze. If what we are all short of is time, then decluttering is just another way of giving ourselves more time in our lives to spend on things other than menial tasks. Better still, being organized in life prevents a lot of frustration.

When: Don’t try to knock out the

whole house in a day. Make it an ordinary part of your life and try to spend 15 – 30 minutes per day organizing. Tackling one thing at a time will make it seem easy and, before you know, it you’ll see big results.

Donations:

Since we’re each given the same number of “hours in a day for those activities, it is always good to have a plan for the remainder of what you call your free time ” terri Michelle advised us on how to Get Started.

“Before you de-clutter, you have to know what you have,” advises Michelle Schwibinger, a professional organizer with Organize It!, Located in McKinney, Texas. “Go through the entire house, including the garage, and bring all like items together in separate areas, even if there is no proper storage for them yet.” She suggests that you hold off any judgment about keeping or getting rid of things during this sorting process. At this point, you just want to put like items with each other, like books, games and seasonal decorations. Once you have all the items sorted, it will become easy to see right off what needs to go, like things you have outgrown or items that are broken. You should create three piles, categorized as “give away,” “keep” and “garbage.” Then just start sifting through the items and deciding which pile they go in. Also, don’t purchase any type of storage systems until you’ve done the sorting so you know what you’ll be using them for.

items you like and use most, “saysKeepSchwibinger. ” Let go of the others “ ”

CHOICES FOR EACH OBJECT WHEN Decluttering YOUR HOME 1. Keep in Room

2. put away in another room

3. donate or give away

4. sell

Once you have a pile of items that you have designated to be given away, don’t pile them up in the house or garage. This will just create more clutter. Put them in a bag or box and take them directly out to your car. Once in your car, schedule a couple of minutes to pull into a charity and hand in the goods.

Time: Try to do all your errandrunning on one day. Also, set up one central calendar for all family events. Another good way to make use of your time is to write a note card to a friend or read a book while you are waiting in line.

Starting. Start with the master clothes closet or pantry, because these are two areas that are usually used on a daily basis.

Car. Keep your car cleaned out and organized by removing all trash immediately and keeping handy items, like a note pad, pen, lotion, etc.

Paper.

“Paper would be the most important item to have uncluttered and organized,” says Cox. “Incredibly, all of what is going on in your life has some kind of paper chase attached to it.” Use a filing system for keeping papers you need, and immediately discard the ones you don’t.

Get Help: Consider hiring a professional organizer to help you reach your goal.

The newly opened restaurants at Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels are headed up by Executive Chef Michele Mingozzi. He has developed delectable menus, which are exquisitely executed, flawlessly presented and delicious!

B

orn in Italy, Michele Mingozzi has travelled the world over in order to immerse himself in his passion; culinary culture and philosophy. His love for cooking began at the young age of fourteen, while he was still in middle school. Not everyone know at this tender age what they want to do with their life, but for Michele, the zeal to create good cuisine cemented his decision to become a great chef. Having received training at different restaurants and through his travels abroad he widened his understanding. It also focused his attitude to seek perfection, “I keep on challenging myself everyday to become better.” This attitude translated to his personal life, when he used his skills to impress his girlfriend, for whom he made a trio of Blue Fin Tuna, tartar, sashimi, tataki with homemade pickled ginger, fresh wasabi and light soya. Mix in the tropical island of Fiji, where they were staying, and you create an overwhelming recipe. And, It must have worked, because she married him. Many people would cease training when they reach the pinnacle of their careers, but Michele is different. He’s not resting on his laurels, for he continues learning although he has 26 years in the food business. The food he serves is sure to be a gastronomic treat.

Hearty Winter

Stews

On a winter's day, a steamy bowl of soup or a hearty stew chock full of veggies is just what you need to knock off the chill. Here are a few soups and stews that make a bone-chilling day a little less dreary.

75

food

New York Steakhouse Stew Chef Moritz Neumann Ingredients:

• 2 New York Strip Steaks, cut into chunks • Flour, seasoned with salt and pepper • 1 cup chopped onion • Olive oil • ½ cup minced garlic • 1 1⁄2 cups home-made beef stock • 3 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 sprig thyme • 1 1⁄2 cups dried morels (or other dried wild mushrooms) • 8 ounces mediumsize brown mushrooms, ends trimmed • 8 ounces medium-size white mushrooms, ends trimmed • Salt & pepper • Butter

Procedure:

One of the best things about fall is trading out summery salads and sandwiches for hearty soups and stews. Use fresh or frozen vegetables to create these delicious recipes. 76

• Heat a large, heavy skillet over medium flame. Film the bottom with olive oil. Toss meat in seasoned flour. Brown the meat in the hot oil, a few pieces at a time (do not crowd the pan or the meat will simmer instead of brown). As pieces are browned, transfer them to a heavy pot. If necessary, add a bit more oil to the skillet with each batch. • When all the meat is browned, add a bit more oil to the skillet and add the chopped onions and later the garlic. Cook, stirring often, until they begin to soften. Transfer onions and garlic to the pot with meat. Stir beef stock, tomato paste and thyme into the skillet, bring to simmer, stirring constantly. Pour beef stock mixture into pot with meat and onions. Bring to simmer, lower heat, cover, and cook very slowly. • As stew begins to cook, pour 1 cup boiling water over dried mushrooms. Let stand until mushrooms are soft, about 5 minutes. Strain the mushroom liquid through cheesecloth or a thick layer of paper towels into a bowl. Remove soaked mushrooms from the cheesecloth, rinse them, and add them to the stew. Stir the strained liquid and both kinds of fresh mushrooms into stew. (Don't worry if it seems as if there's not enough liquid; the mushrooms will give off additional liquid as they cook.) Return stew to very slow simmer, partially cover it, and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until meat is very tender and stew is thickened, 1-2 hours. (Alternatively, stew may be cooked in 300-degree oven). Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add hard butter chunks and stir before serving.

Mexican Bean Stew Executive Chef Ery Irmansjah, Mövenpick Hotel Doha Ingredients:

• 220g dried pinto beans • 220g dried black kidney beans • 220g dried chickpeas • 2 whole tomatoes, diced • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 onion, diced • 4 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 600g tomato paste • 340g can sweet corn • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste • cayenne pepper to taste, or ,chilli for a little spicy kick

Procedure:

• Sort and rinse pinto beans, black beans and chickpeas. Place in a large bowl and cover with water. Soak overnight. • Drain beans and place in a large heavy based pot; cover with water. Bring to the boil and cook for 1 hour, or until beans are tender. If necessary, add more water during cooking to prevent beans drying out. • Heat oil in a small frying pan over medium-high heat. Gently fry onion and garlic until onion is transparent. Stir cumin into onion mixture, then add to the beans with the paste. Simmer for 20 minutes. • Stir in sweet corn and cinnamon and cook 15 minutes more. Season to taste with salt, pepper and cayenne before serving.

Chef’s secret tips:

This recipe calls for dried beans, which will need to soak overnight. You could use canned beans as a shortcut, if you prefer.

Belgian Lamb Stew Chef Jost Christophe Schaper, Intercontinental Doha Ingredients:

• 3lbs lean boneless lamb shoulder, trimmed of excess fat and cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes • Salt - 2 tsp • Freshly ground black pepper - to taste • Butter- 4 tbsp • Vegetable oil - 3 tbsp • Onions - 1 1/2 cups, finely chopped • Garlic - 1 1/2 tsp, finely chopped • Beef stock - 3 cups • Water - 1 cup • Bay leaf - 1 small leaf • Whole cloves - 4 • Fresh parsley and thyme - 2 tbsp, finely chopped • Belgian endives - 6 small • Cornstarch - 1 tbsp dissolved in 2 tbsp cold water.

Procedure:

• Heat oil and butter in a casserole and fry the meat, but not too much at once, so it browns evenly. • Remove the meat from the casserole, then fry the onions and garlic. • Add the beef stock and bring to the boil. • Add the meat back to the casserole, together with the bay leaf, the cloves, and add just enough water so it almost covers the meat, but not completely. • Cover the casserole with a lid or aluminium foil and let it simmer in the oven for about 2 hours. • Remove the meat from the pot again, and bring the sauce to the boil, so it reduces a bit, then add the endives and herbs. If necessary stir in some of the cornstarch and water, and mix to thicken the sauce. • Add the meat back to the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.

Comprehensive Detox (based on single occupancy in one hillside rooms with garden view) Accommodation (7, 9 or 14 nights) picturesque hillside among waterfalls and lotus-studded pools, was a short walk away from a private white-sandy beach. The view from the balcony was also epic , with a view of the glorious South China Sea. I was also very impressed by the delicious organic food creations, fresh juices and smoothies on offer at the charming cafe by the pool at lunch time, and the main restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Not to mention the friendliness, politeness and professionalism of all of the staff, who made me feel at home. I met the naturopath for my first consultation and after a quick Body Bio Impedance Analysis which measures body fat, body water and metabolic rate, she outlined my therapy schedule for the week. It looked quite scary and full-on at first, but after enjoying my first treatment, a super relaxing 90 minutes of lymphatic drainage massage in the open air treatment room, I understood there was nothing to be afraid or stress about at Kamalaya. I only had to relax and enjoy the days ahead, and so I did. I had around 4 treatments or massages a day, including the relaxing and nourishing infrared sauna, which both increases blood circulation and increases metabolism. On alternate

days I also experienced (for the first time) colon hydrotheraphy, which scared the life out of me at first, but wasn't that bad after all.

My skin was literally glowing scheduled daily holistic fitness activities after it, and I really felt refreshed. Obviously the traditional Thai massage is also not to be missed, as it really releases loads of tension in your whole body. At Kamalaya you are given tremendous choice and variety - you can opt for time in the spa, sessions with naturopaths or therapists, fitness training, yoga practice or opt to sample the diverse holistic therapies – the choice is yours. This is what really makes it special. You won't even feel you are on a detox as everything is so relaxing, so you can organize your day according to your needs. First stop, a landmark that has become embedded in the collective psyche of the United States. On Friday, November 22, 1963 at 12:30pm, as President Kennedy’s motorcade turned onto Elm Street, shots rang out. The President was fatally wounded, a nation went into mourning, and the Sixth Floor of the Texas School Book Depository became a place of infamy. Today it is known as the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and it houses a

permanent exhibit that examines the life, death and legacy of President Kennedy, as it does the many conspiracy theories that followed suit. You can stand in the same corner window (it has been recreated to look as it did on that fatal day in 1963) where Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shot that was heard around the world. This is a ‘must-see’ for historians or history buffs visiting Dallas.

Things to Do and See While in Dallas By Francesca Cruz

With my trusty map of the United States pinned to the wall and my dart in hand, I decide to throw caution to the wind and select the next city to explore using a game of chance. And where did the dart land?

T

he ninth largest city in the US, Dallas, Texas is an exuberant and sophisticated metropolitan area with a genteel demeanor. The locals are friendly, welcoming and warm,as Southern folks in the United States tend to be, (hence the notion of Southern hospitality), and the city itself is vibrant and alive. With all my research done prior to arriving in Dallas, I was ready, with cowboy boots and twang in place, to visit the very best attractions this town had to offer. After taking in some history we move on to art, and what better place to visit than the Nasher Sculpture Center, located in the epicenter of the Dallas Arts

District. The museum, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker, houses more than 300 masterpieces by Calder, Giacometti, Matisse, Picasso, Rodin and more. It is considered one of the greatest sculpture gardens in the United States where art enhances nature. The museum consists of light-filled roofless indoor and outdoor gallery spaces like no other in the world. The dream of Raymond and Patsy Nasher, the facility brings the very best of interactive and engaging art programs to the city of Dallas.

Next on our list is the Dallas

Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 66-acres of the most beautiful

and serene gardens you can imagine. Walking through the gates is like coming upon Alice’s Wonderland. The gardens showcase seasonal flowers, trees and ornamental shrubs. It presently houses an installation by celebrated artist Dale Chihuly—known for incorporating blown glass art to nature. Why not enjoy a scenic picnic with the family, or there are also several restaurants and cafes to choose from. The Arboretum is home to art shows, festivals and outdoor concerts. It is a lovely place for a day spent immersed in a good read or taking a leisurely stroll.

One of the loveliest sights to take in while in Dallas is the Dallas World Aquarium, built in

One of the best views of Dallas you’ll find is at a historic boutique hotel that sits perched on a North Oak Cliff hilltop called the Belmont. Just minutes from downtown, the hotel has been renovated to maintain its original charm with a shimmy of vintage with a lot of kitsch. The outside patio is the setting for live music and outdoor movies, with downtown Dallas as your backdrop. But if award winning Southern cuisine is what you are in the mood for, two steps and a skip away in the adjacent building is SMOKE restaurant where you can indulge in dishes like veal sweetbreads & oxtail with sherry vinegar, turnips & kale, or roasted cabrito & fresh masa with goat’s milk cajeta & green apple salsa verde. Oh my, I’m hungry already.

1924 and converted in 1992 from a warehouse into the now aquarium. Imagine walking into a South American rainforest filled with rare indigenous plants, marine life and animals—minus, thankfully, the scorching heat and unpredictable torrential rain. Pathways lined with bamboo-planks surrounded by tropical foliage lead you to fairy penguins splashing about, giant anteaters, rare birds, multiple species of monkeys, sloths, giant river otters, and Orinoco crocodiles that are endangered and native to Venezuela. The aquarium keeps growing and more adjacent properties have been purchased with new exhibits added. In 2004 Mundo Maya was completed, consisting of a 400,000-gallon Cenote filled with a variety of sharks and rays. There are so many exotic animals to view and learn about, making this a wonderful place for the whole family to see and enjoy. With so much history, charm, economic activity, art and beauty in this dynamic city, it is certainly a destination to jot down on your list of go-to places. There is plenty to see and enjoy whether traveling on your own, with friends or family. It is no wonder that Forbes Magazine listed Dallas, Texas as one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the United States.

Connectivity and Cultural Closeness by Francesca Moser Photography Jessie Palanca

Coming from a land known for its fascinating culture, exquisite food, warm tropical climate and exotic beaches, H. E. Mr. Panyarak Poolthup, sat down with ABODE to discuss his journey and experiences that led to his arrival journey Thailand to Qatar.

people How long have you served your country? A: I joined the Thai foreign service as a

What are your impressions of Qatar ? A: My first impression was the tidiness,

career diplomat 25 years ago. Before being appointed as the Ambassador of Thailand to Qatar, I was the Deputy Director General of a department overseeing bilateral relations between Thailand and countries in South Asia, Central Asia, Middle East and Africa. So, I am quite familiar with the region.

cleanliness and orderliness of Doha despite the fact that the capital city is so well populated by people from so many countries. I am impressed that people from so many different cultures can live together in peace and harmony. The major changes that I have witnessed are more construction sites and the increase in traffic congestion.

When did you arrive in Qatar? A: I arrived in Qatar in March last year. I do not have a family with me here, but I do enjoy every minute of my stay in Qatar.

Since joining the Thai foreign service, where have you resided? A: Apart from Qatar, I’ve lived abroad in only two countries. I received my Master’s degree from the American University in Washington, DC and after joining the foreign service, my first oversees assignment was also in Washington. The other country is Japan, where I had lived twice. First, when my father was posted in Japan as Deputy.

How would you describe the relation between Thailand and Qatar? How are you planning to strengthen this relationship? A: Thailand and Qatar have always enjoyed warm and cordial relations. There have been exchanges of visit at all levels and covering many areas. For the year 2012 alone, we have witnessed high level visits from Thailand especially by His Majesty, the King’s two daughters, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and HRH Princess Chulabhorn, who paid separate visits to Qatar to strengthen

relations in academic and scientific fields respectively. And Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who is our first female Prime Minister, paid an official visit to reassure Qatar that we have finally recovered from last year’s severe floods with resiliency and flexibility, a key characteristic of the Thai people.

How many of your fellow Thai citizens currently reside in Qatar? A: There are about 2,000 Thais here, 500 of them are cabin crew for Qatar Airways. Most of the rest are laborers working at construction sites and some Thai ladies are also married to expats here.

Share with our readers what you enjoyed the most during your 25 year career with the foreign service. A: As a career diplomat I get a chance to see the world. It’s a rare treat to be able to travel to more than 50 countries in a short period of time. The world is such a wonderful place. I wish people would stop fighting and enjoy what it has to offer in such a short lifespan.

Cyberworld By Marlynne Mallari – Dela Peña Photography Courtesy of Best of All Worlds

Facebook has reached one billion users worldwide. What is the impact on our society? Have we become a ‘cyber-community’, connected to each other in a completely new way?’

S

ocial Media is a tool to interact with your friends, families, colleagues or acquaintances wherever you are. It does exactly what it says - it’s focused on the social side of our lives – but what about using it for business networking? Is it possible? ABODE speaks to Louise Wachtmeister, one of the developers of Best Of All Worlds, an invite-only social platform, which has identified a gap in the market and created a clear alternative to current social media sites.

Q: What initially sparked your interest in social networking? A: When I launched aSmallWorld with my husband in 2004, we were pioneers in social media. The term ¨social networking¨ didn’t exist as a concept for interaction online, only referring, at the time, to traditional offline social networking. We started working on the concept in 2001. What initially sparked our interest was the need we saw for an online platform where you could connect with the people you already knew, around the world.

Q: You recently launched Best of All Worlds (bestofallworlds.com) can you tell me more about this project? A: Best of All Worlds focuses on your passions in life. We let our members interact in a more meaningful and relevant way with friends, and friends of friends, from around the world, around their interests and passions - all in a trusted environment. We are a global private community with a stateof-the-art “discovery platform”. Features 90

We are creating special interest “ communities, and for the same reason

we strive to attract people who have particular expertise, backgrounds, and passions, to share with others in their fields.

people

include: a global Event Guide, user-generated City Guides, Trip Planner, Discussion Forums; People Search, and Global Worlds of shared interests to launch soon. The goal is to create an intimate and trusted environment, as opposed to the chaos and excess of biased information that prevails online today. We are attracting thought-leaders and opinion-makers in many fields from all over the world. By being part of this group in the real world, as well as in the virtual, it will give people special access they may not have otherwise. In today’s information society, information is king. However it is not about the “Wisdom of the Crowds” any more, it is about the “Wisdom of A: Yes, I believe this is true. There are few the Trusted Few”. places online that also encourage you to meet offline, probably because of a trust All we are doing is providing an environment issue. That is one of the main reasons we that already exists in real life. Examples are developing tools to get people to do being everything from private country clubs, activities together. We help our members gentlemen's clubs and conferences, to private discover those who share the same parties, or your own dining room. It is nonsense passions, and find other members with to suggest that all these should not be allowed similar intents, with the view to interact in to exist online. And it is not about snobbery; it the real world. The fact that our members is human behavior that has not yet effectively are already connected within a few degrees reached the online world. of separation, and in a trusted environment, Q: Is this social network only for a chosen makes it much more natural to interact few? offline.

A: Best of All Worlds is by invitation-only. Our goal is to capture the top 1 % of the online population. Initially we are limiting our audience to 1 million people worldwide, but over time as we create new worlds of shared interests, this becomes quite scalable. Facebook has hundreds of millions of tiny user groups who do the same thing in the same place.

On Best of All Worlds you can show your ¨intent¨: “I want to have dinner with anyone in my network this weekend” in Geneva.

We are developing exclusive global worlds for art, music, business, sports of many kinds, and all kinds of passions that people have. If several of the worlds become engaging and grow virally, there is really no limit to how many of them we can launch, provided it is done with the right people involved.

Q: Can you give tips on how to start your own social network?

Q: There are a lot of social media networks around, and many people fear that this will lead to ‘cyber relationships’, where people do not actually interact personally but just through the net, do you think this might be possible?

“I want to go sailing with any of our members” who happen to be in St Barts. This is a unique feature that members already have started to use a lot.

A: Anyone can start a social network on any common platform today. It is important to offer something that people want. It is easy to take an off-the-shelf application and apply it to a group of people you already know. You can also start a group on Facebook. If you have a larger audience I recommend you talk to us, as we are launching niche worlds for selected audiences worldwide.

Q: What drew you to this industry? A: In Australia when you’re 16, there

Work hard, anything is possible

is an opportunity for two weeks work experience, and all I wanted to do since then was to be in hospitality. I love meeting people and travelling, it is a very exciting job. I’m glad this industry exists, otherwise I’m sure I’d be unemployed!

Amari Hotel Doha

Q: The brand is relatively new in the country, what are your plans to strengthen your presence here? A: The Amari brand is new in the Middle East although we are well known throughout Thailand. We have a strong clientele coming from Qatar and Saudi. So, we are already known by many locals. In partnership with Sharaka Holdings we are extending our services by opening this first branch of Amari outside of Thailand. For our grand opening we are planning a couple of events to show Asian hospitality.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: Meeting people from different cultures

Celebrate Asian Hospitality by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Peña Photography Jessie Palanca

One of Thailand’s finest hotel groups has landed in Doha. The Amari brand is sure to bring the colours and rhythms of cosmopolitan Asia to the Middle East. ABODE interviewed Damian Ball, General Manager of Amari Doha, to learn more about his expertise and of the secret of his success in the industry. 92

Q: This is the first Amari Hotel in the Middle East - why Qatar? A: Everyone is well aware of the amount of development in Qatar and Doha has a lot to offer visitors with its calendar of signature sporting and conferencing events. Amari Doha is centrally located in the heart of Doha, 10 minutes from the airport, near the museums, and only 5 minutes away from City Centre, so we are ideally located for any business or leisure traveller. Along with Sharaka Holdings, we are very excited to bring the Amari brand to the Middle East.

and different walks of life, travelling, and the fact that no day is ever the same. It’s definitely not your regular 9 to 5 office job. I love motivating staff from different nationalities and different beliefs. It’s very challenging but also very rewarding!

Q: What’s your favourite place in Doha? A: I like the Pearl, the Corniche for relaxation and Aspire. When I have more time I would like to explore Doha fully.

Q: Any advice for anyone who wants to be part of this exciting industry? A: Follow your dreams. Have a goal and focus on that. Don’t think it’s unachievable because you are a certain age or in a certain place. For me, the experience I’ve gained in this industry has been amazing. Work hard, anything is possible.
