Dear readers,

N

ew Year is a time for us to stop and reflect. To celebrate all the blessings and achievements of the past year and to look to the future. Qatar has many reasons to be proud of this last year. His Highness Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani has played a noble role in international affairs and has been warmly welcomed by the countries across the world that he has visited. Not only is this nation spreading its influence globally, it is developing its reputation across the region and the world as a centre for sport, knowledge, business, culture and education. We have the privilege and honour of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser continuing with her charity work including her role in developing educational opportunities for children and young people in various countries; giving them hope, a future and aspirations, that they would not

have had without her gracious devotion. Her Highness is an exceptional role model for women who are inspired by her intelligence, elegance and generosity. We congratulate our royal family for their achievements and for leading us by their example as upholders of our Arab and Islamic traditions in a fast changing, modern world. At the close of the year and the beginning of the new, we know that we are another step closer to 2030. The vision of our leaders means that as people together we can look to our future with confidence. Their plan to balance prosperity and growth with the protection of the environment incorporates wisdom and morality.

and to look forward. But it is also a time when we should think about the present. To stop and look and really appreciate the beauty of Doha and be grateful for all that we enjoy. On behalf of the ABODE team and myself, I wish you a glorious, peaceful and fruitful 2015.

How

Celebrities Keep in Shape

It's easy to imagine that celebrities just look the way they do without trying, but In fact, most of them work as hard (or probably even harder) than us to keep their bodies in tip-top shape. So if you are having trouble shifting those few extra pounds, let these celebs inspire you into staying fit and looking good!

MIRANDA KERR

Q

Tell us about your exercise regime? MIRANDA: I started working out at an early age, as a child I was a gymnast; I played touch football, netball and basketball.

How did you stay in shape during pregnancy and get back in shape after giving birth? MIRANDA: I maintained my fitness through yoga along with brisk walking. I tried to do at least 20 minutes of exercise daily. After having Flynn, I amped up my exercise routine with pilates and resistance training. I try to make sure I go hiking three or four times a week. It definitely takes a lot of work to stay in shape! On body confidence and insecurities... MIRANDA: Everyone has challenging days and circumstances and no matter who you are you can’t escape that. There’s always someone better off than you or even worse off than you, it’s just a matter of embracing what you have and expanding on that: be the best version of you. My philosophy is be gentle with yourself and be gentle with others – and be grateful. Workout tips... MIRANDA: I try to do power-workout DVD, PACE Express by Al Sears, M.D., four times a week. It’s only 12 minutes, so it’s definitely attainable. And you feel like you’ve had a good workout afterward.

heidi klum

Q

You really are a supermom, how do you fit in everything and fitness? HEIDI: Usually when I work I’m done by five o clock so I can be home for dinner and bedtime and all of that. If I don’t work in the morning, I drive my kids to school and be with them as much as I can. When I come home, I leave my bag by the phone with all of its gadgets. I try not to use them in the house anymore. I think that’s important because sometimes emails and phones overtake your life and I try to get a little bit back to basics and push that away a little, otherwise it’s just too much.

Do you have any fitness tips for busy moms? HEIDI: Try to work in into your daily routine like I do. It’s hard. You have to get dinner on the table, get the kids to school, do their lunch boxes, everything, it’s hard so you have to make it work somehow. It’s also eating right. I’ve gotten very lucky. You always look great. Tell us the one thing you love most about fashion? HEIDI: The one thing I love most about fashion is that it changes all the time. I get inspired by fashion; it keeps me looking different all the time. I like to play and have fun with fashion. What is the best piece of advice your mom gave you about beauty? HEIDI: To be happy. And to smile.

Q

You always do look fantastic. What is your secret? What is your fitness regime and diet? NICOLE: Well food makes me happy. Music makes me happy. Love makes me happy. I’m not going to lie, I work at it. Before shooting my music video I was training like an athlete, like an Olympic athlete. I usually run. I’m a runner and sometimes I do some spinning but recently, I wanted to change it up, dare we say, keep your body guessing so; I’ve really heavily gotten back into hot yoga, which is modified Bikram yoga, where the room is like at least 105 degrees. I was doing that like every night. I would work out a lot during the day, go to the studio and then at night go to the last class of hot yoga and that would just be the perfect way to unwind my day. It’s never much fun doing exercise but you feel great afterwards? NICOLE: You just feel like you’ve accomplished so much, you know. And I’ve been doing some cardio cross fit training and lots of squats, the stairs in Los Angeles, running up and down stairs and lunges, more squats [laughs]. Does it help that Lewis is quite fit too? Do you work out together? NICOLE: Yeah we do. I mean obviously we’re on opposite ends of the universe most of the time but he’s yes, inspiring in that way. It’s good to have someone to spur you on? NICOLE: It’s hard at first to get into anything. I know when you hear people talking about working out you’re like, ‘Urgh’, I hate people getting excited about it. But if you just stick with it, your body yearns for it. So yeah, I love the hot yoga because you sweat it all out and then it helps get you in the right frame of mind always and spiritually I love it as well for me.

NICOLE SCHERZINGER

At the end of the day, everybody is different. So depending on your body shape and size, what is most important is not counting calories but filling your body with nutrients - Miranda Kerr

GWYNETH PALTROW

Q

You have been known to train every day like an athlete and we all know you’re very involved with healthy food and stuff like that. When did start to focus on all that? GWYNETH: I guess when I was about 25 is when I quit smoking and started exercising, so that was the first time I sort of started to get healthier. Then when my dad got sick with cancer then I really started focussing on, you know, I started doing a lot of research on food as medicine and what we can do, like anti-cancer diets. So I think that’s what really catalysed me into a health and wellness frame of mind and that was when I was probably like 26.

Are you always a very disciplined person or do you have weaknesses? Like food or health wise? GWYNETH: I don’t ever cut anything out, you know, like if I want French fries and wine and cheese I eat whatever I want but I try to have the baseline of what I eat be healthy. But I’m very disciplined in my exercise - that I don’t miss. What is your exercise routine? GWYNETH: I do the Tracy Anderson method which is she’s my trainer and she’s incredible. She’s developed this whole amazing system of exercise and she’s totally transformed my body. She’s like my god - I worship at her feet. [laughs]

Q

You’re known for your rock hard body. Any advice you’d like to share? CAMERON : I think that the best thing to do is evaluate, just be present, to be conscious. Start paying attention to what you do. Be honest with yourself with what you do. If you do one thing to an extreme, like if you have 5 CocaCola, just cut it down to one. Consistently and continually honour the body that you have and what it could be. I feel like it’s really important to understand these things about yourself.

EMILY BLUNT

What I would tell women is that your body is your The problem is that I responsibility. It’s your body; nobody else love to eat. If I didn’t can take care of it and you really, truly do love to eat I probably not know what body you have and what wouldn’t have to work your body is capable of until you been out as much but I consistent with meeting its needs on the level believe in that kind of of nutrition and physical activity. - Cameron Diaz balance.- Emily Blunt KHLOE KARDASHIAN

Q

What is your secret to looking amazing? KHLOE: It’s really consistency. I’ve made a lifestyle change to work out, and more continuously four to five days a week and that takes determination. I do not want to diet. If I dieted I’m sure I could lose weight that much faster but it’s not about weight, it’s about how I feel within my clothes. I think just go with how you feel. It’s about mind, body and soul for me. Do you like working out or is it a chore? KHLOE: For me, I love working out because if I’m having a stressful day it’s a huge stress reliever. Definitely there’s days that I’m like, ‘I do not want to do this right now.’ But I switch up my work-outs. I think the key is to do a work-out that you’re excited about and I have work-out partners, Kim and I, we go on a lot of hikes. So I think you just have to find what works for you. But working out is not about even losing weight. It’s just about being healthy.

When you do change your shape you say it takes a lot of time and it’s all about the exercise. Is that important to you? KHLOE: My entire life I’ve struggled with my weight and I’ve tried probably every diet fad or quick fix. So I’ve really made a choice just to go to the gym and be healthy and I still eat what I want. I don’t deprive myself. It is about consistency and a healthy way to do it, it took me about a year to lose 30 pounds and I think if I dieted I’m sure it would be faster but I don’t have that much discipline [laughs].

Q

What keeps you in such great shape? EMILY: I do a combination of things. I do Bikram Yoga (hot yoga), I like spinning and I also do just a general workout sometimes like sprints and weights. The Bikram Yoga in a hot room allows you to sweat the toxins out. It’s really hard, the first time I did it I almost threw up for how hard it is. However even if I were to take all the other things away, and just did Bikram Yoga every day I think it would work – but I do like the pace of the spinning.

You seem to be very disciplined? EMILY: To be honest I really like it. And that’s the thing, people say, ‘Oh how do you stay in shape?’ However it’s not easy for anyone; I also have to really work at it. I’m not one of these naturally really lean people. Do you have to diet as well though? EMILY: I am not a very moderate person; I’ll go from one extreme to the next. So on a bad week I will eat and drink every night. I’ll go to restaurants and have three course meals; I’ll really go for it. And then the next week, I’m much disciplined and regimented.

interview

Abode uncovers the story of Amal Alamuddin - the Lebanese beauty who married George Clooney - a prominent human rights lawyer with striking Arabic looks.

AMAL CLOONEY

L

ast September, Amal and Clooney were married at a magnificent ceremony in Venice where they first met and fell "instantly" in love according to the groom.

As it turned out, the 36-year-old Alamuddin entered into Hollywood royalty when she married Clooney, 52, one of the biggest movie stars on the planet and previously known best as a committed bachelor after an early failed marriage (to actress Talia Shire). Over the years, George has struggled through a succession of short-term relationships with women including actress Kelly Preston (who would later become Mrs. John Travolta and was the woman who famously gifted George with a pot-bellied pig as a house pet); French cocktail waitress Celine Balitran

(arguably the most attractive girlfriend he ever had); British media personality Lisa Snowden; Italian reality show star Elisabetta Canalis; and, strangest of all, professional female wrester Stacy Keibler (what was George thinking?). But none of these women could ever be considered to have had the kind of intellectual or social bearing to match George Clooney's avowed political and social commitment. Having worked as a United Nations Messenger of Peace (he recently resigned the position) for six years, Clooney had publicly advocated on behalf of the war-torn, drought-and famine-stricken regions of Darfur and southern Sudan, as well as the Congo. It was just as vital to him to lobby with various western governments to help

alleviate global suffering as it was for him to make a good movie, whether as an actor (as in Syriana or Michael Clayton), or as a director himself (Good Night and Good Luck and Monuments Men).

That is the context in which Amal Alamuddin was the ideal woman that George Clooney had been waiting for but never managed to find. She brought the requisite political conscience and personal elegance to their relationship that was clearly too much for George to resist and finally overturned his self-proclaimed marriage veto. After a long string of women who could never match his stature, George was ready to commit to someone who could address the European Parliament one day while attending a Hollywood premiere the next. "I married up," declared George about his

The famous Lebanese poet Said Aki was so impressed by her beauty that he wrote verses in her honour. Amal owes not only her beauty but also her sense of ambition to her mother who is currently foreign editor of the Al Hayat newspaper and has interviewed numerous heads of state over the years, including Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and Fidel Castro. Meanwhile, Amal's father, Ramzi, returned to Lebanon in 1991 and is now retired from a career as professor of business studies at the American University in Beirut.

MEN’S AGENDA Knit the Trend

7For all Mankind at Salam Stores

Knitwear has become an even more popular fashion staple for men. Its versatility comes unmatched as knits can be worn over like a preppy, smart-casual; or under a tailored suit for a formal winter ensemble and so let alone creating a relaxed and comfy look, yet still being the main focus of one’s style.

men'sagenda Know by now that quality knitwear is one of the most flattering garments there is for men. It gives a weight to skinny physique and yet streamlines large figures while keeping you comfortable and warm in cold weather. ABODE takes on three knitwear styles to get you started and break the thread of having monotonous dress shirts and slacks to the office or casual affairs with friends – a definitely essential addition within the modern gentlemen’s wardrobe.

Round/Crew Neck

• When worn under a suit, consider the following: • Choose fine gauge sweaters • Your jumper should almost be figure-hugging but comfortable • Avoid patterns but be free to choose colours that reflect your personality

Paul Smith at Salam Stores

Style Guide

The classic round/crew neck is your go-to sweater but its distinction lies in its materials. Note that a more formal aesthetic is seen with cashmere and wool. Of course, this means extra riyals on your shopping budget but rest assured that it is a substantial investment.

Roll/Turtle Neck We have seen the roll/turtle neck almost every winter, yet it manages to deserve our stares with its looks of classic-ality and elegantly masculine appeal. Don’t we just feel intrigued by someone fully-covered up to the head? Talk about sophistication indeed.

n this modern world where time is luxury we should be wise about where to spend it. In my case, I dedicated my almost three hours at Spa & Wellness Centre of Four Seasons Hotel Doha to experience their Radiance Treatment Package. The long process of treatment was started by my therapist explaining the helpful effects to my body, then she started to give me a body massage using the pink clay, in this process, the pink clay nourished my skin and left it well moisturized while the massage soothed every tension inside me. It was then followed by a thermal indulgence facial, where I have to commend my therapist as she showed how qualified she is for what was seemed resulted in dry I she does. The facial massage is as soothing as the body massage, it seems to pacify my inner self that results peace of mind. After that, I had a face mask in 47 oC then while waiting for it to dry; I received a whole body massage once more as the therapist moisturized my whole body. BEAUTY TALK: Joelle Mardinian The modern bombshell shares with ABODE her leading beauty expertise for what we can expect for 2015: what is in and what is out! So let Joelle Mardinian get you beauty ready!

JOELLE ON: SKINCARE The most important thing about beauty is our skin care regime, especially if your skin is prone to be sensitive towards weather change, hormones, air conditioning or even lack of moisturising. Also, forgetting to put sunblock on can seriously damage our skin, so therefore I have developed Joelle Paris SKIN CARE, a 5 step daily regime to help you manage and take care of your skin. This includes: 1) Foam Wash 2) Under Eye Cream 3) Sunblock 4) Moisturiser 5) Night Cream These all work together to keep your skin healthy and shine with a glow. So now you are ready to apply your make up once you have first taken care of your skin! Looking glamorous and professional must always start with the simple and manageable routine of firstly ensuring that we take care of our skin.

JOELLE ON: LATEST MAKEUP TREND FOR THE NEW YEAR For the next season ahead, follow on trend from the winter months in these simply ways: 1. Darker Eyes 2. Matt Foundation 3. Red Matt Lipstick 4. Face Contouring 5. But most important is matt fresh, healthy skin

Max Factor Colour Elixir Lipstick in Ruby Tuesday

JOELLE ON: BEAUTY MISTAKES TO AVOID One of the worst, and also the most noticeable beauty mistakes out there, is not matching your foundation, powder or concealer to your skin tone. I regularly stress on the importance of taking time to balance the colours, but every now and then some ladies may go too pale or too dark. I would advise that the perfect colouring for our face may actually be a combination of not just one, but even two or three different shades and then to blend them in together to achieve a near perfect finish. Dark circles and lines under are eyes are one our worst beauty problems! We all have our different ways and means of trying to conceal these; however my advice is actually NOT to use concealer. Using makeup concealer will increase the depth of the darkness, it is therefore better to firstly treat this issue with a skin expert who will be able to set you straight as to what can really help. Also using a highlighter under the eyes is a better option than concealer.

JOELLE ON: ONE STEP THAT IS 'A-MUST' IN MY MAKEUP ROUTINE

beauty Q&A Your answers to those everyday beauty questions you've always wanted to ask. Words and Images by Kellie Silva

With over 30,000 Facebook followers (and counting), Fashsquad is a firm favourite for all fashion and beauty addicts of Qatar! Creator Kellie Silva - a trusted household name, answers your beauty woes. Sharing tips and advice for the New Year, how to organise your makeup, what to keep and what to throw! Helpful advice to guide you to a brand NEW YOU!

From Ahlam Ghadban

Q.Itowant start

the New Year off with gorgeous glowing skin, what do you suggest?

A.

For a product, I highly recommend Benefit Primed & Poreless, this is an excellent primer which smoothes the skin, and gives a gorgeous dewy look, it can be worn alone or with foundation. For a treatment, a good facial is a must, I find the Guerlain Spa to be one of the best in town, Guerlain products work so well with the skin, along with the facial a good pamper session will certainly make you feel like a new woman, and brighten you up.

Easy DIY: turn old lipstick into tinted lipbalm by melting Vaseline and Lipstick together then store in little pot or container!

From Fadia Baloush

have so many Q.Ilipsticks and limited space, how would you recommend storing them?

A.

Acrylic holders are awesome, you can easily find the shade you’re looking for, without rummaging around a makeup bag, these can be found in many stores around Doha, and they are easy on the pocket, if you’re on a budget, an ice cube tray works just as effectively, just pop them in, and display.

48

ABODE January.indd 48

From Sarah Taylor

the past year Q.Over I have accumulated around 8 foundations and BB creams, how do I know if they are expired?

A.

If your foundation has a pump then it will stay fresh longer (12 months) but if you are dabbing your fingers into a bottle every day you should think of tossing your foundation every 6 months. I also go off smell, if it starts to smell different and a little bit funky, get rid of it, do not risk getting breakouts.

FASHSQUAD is an Interactive Fun Social Network for Fashion, Beauty & Food Lovers in the State of Qatar and beyond, an awesome platform where Women come together, laugh, have engaging conversations, and discuss all things feminine, it was created by Qatar based expat, Kellie Silva, who has a huge love for fashion, food and beauty! Basic hygiene: for brushes that you use daily (and don’t share), aim to clean them at least once a week or twice a week if you really love makeup and apply it often.

From Elizabeth James;

beauty Q.Which product do you recommend as a staple / must-have beauty item?

A.

This can really vary per person, however I would say a good black mascara, this can easily open your eyes up when tired which will automatically brighten up your face, I recommend Lancome Hypnose Drama.

Makeover Secrets

The denim combination is the most daring of them all. Wearing denim on denim is a trend that is showing up more and more in the fashion world, and has been dominating the runways recently. Almost every single woman has something denim in her wardrobe, especially jeans which have served as a timeless style staple, and for the New Year, why not reinvent your old denims by trying a different combination of looks. Photography: Jessie Palanca Styling: Harriet Gyamfuah Styling Assistant: Celia Osuagwu Hair: B/ATTITUDE Salon Makeup: Cherden Denis (Instagram: airbrushedbycherden) Location: B/ATTITUDE Spa Clothes & Accessories: Bershka, Pimkie, Salsa, Pull & Bear, and Uterque

Tips from Lucinda The Hair Stylist

Step 1: I took some time at the very beginning of the consultation to assess the texture of the client's hair. As the ends were very dry, I decided to use our Leonor Greyl deep hydrating treatment on her hair as this adds much needed moisture to the body of the hair. •TIP: Deep hydrating treatment should be done at least once a month or twice monthly if your hair is extremely dry.

HEATHER Before makeover

Heather Lang:

Heather has a very busy, active lifestyle. She is an Assistant Principal at Qatar Foundation by day, plays in a band in her spare time as a keyboardist, and organises music acts for the Admiral's Club and Rose and Thistle Pub in Horizon Manor Hotel. Not much of a girly girl, Heather wanted to keep true to her easy going self, so there is nothing better than demonstrating how you can vamp up something as casual and relaxed as denim!

Tips from Cherden The Makeup Artist

Step 1: Ensure the face is free from any makeup residue especially mascara that can create grey undertones under the eyes. Then moisturise the face and prime the eyelids. •TIP: Primers reduce the appearance of oily skin and fine lines.

Step 2: Apart from having dry ends, the client's hair was in pretty good condition so all that was needed was a trim to get rid of the dry ends. Due to the client having fine hair, a one length cut is advised as this will add volume to the hair. •TIP: Regular haircuts can help keep split ends at bay.

Step 2: Apply blended foundation colours to achieve the final shade. Use foundation in the middle of the face to achieve a contoured look where needed. •TIP: When using heavy foundation, apply lightly and set with translucent powder for a perfect finish.

Step 3: In order to add extra volume to the client's hair, I set her hair in rollers. Setting the hair in rollers in this way ensures that the body and volume of the curls are maintained for longer. •TIP: Make sure that the ends of the hair are tucked firmly into the rollers to achieve smooth curls from root to tip.

Step 3: Blend dark brown eyeshadow and eyeliner on eyes, as it helps highlighting its inner corner. Lastly, apply individual eyelashes, finishing off with mascara to create a dramatic look. •TIP: Blending is a makeup artist's best friend!

Step 4: I decided on a style that was simple yet chic. With fine hair, adding soft curls will give the illusion of depth and body. Lastly, a swept back style adds a regal touch to the final overall look.

If you wish to get a make over, get in touch at win@abodeqatar.com

Step 4: Use a peachy coloured blush applying towards the apples of the cheeks. On lips use both lipliner and lipstick. •TIP: Make sure that your highlighter is well blended together with the blusher.

yoga time The word ‘Yoga’ itself means “union” - a union of the individual consciousness (soul) with the universal consciousness (spirit). Today most of the people practicing yoga are engaged in asana (posture) practices; these practices done regularly and in the correct manner help the body detoxify and provide physical strength. Photography jessie palanca Model from Trinity Talent Qatar (www.trinitytalentqatar.com) LOCATION AT MÖVENPICK TOWER & SUITES DOHA Workout Clothing provided by Oysho

Do’s & Don’ts: Tree Pose - Vrksasana From standing position begin to shift the weight over to the right foot, lifting the left foot off the floor. Bend the left knee, bringing the sole of the left foot high onto the inner right thigh. Press the foot into the thigh and the thigh back into the foot. Focus on something that doesn't move to help you keep your balance. Repeat the move while standing on the left foot. Be careful to avoid placing the left foot directly on the right knee. Use the wall for balance if necessary.

• Do Yoga at least once a week to keep the body healthy and fit. • Do wear something comfortable and stretching. • Do warm-up exercises before. • Do not eat anything heavy right before the exercises, a light snack 1 hour before should be fine. • Do not drink water during the exercise, but have some water before and after. • Do not wear socks or shoes, barefoot is the way to do correct yoga exercises.

Benefits: Strengthens legs, improves balance. Balances the Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Camel Pose Ustrasana Sit on your knees. Draw your hands up the side of your body as you start to open your chest. Reach your hands back one at a time to grasp your heels. Bring your hips forward so that they are over your knees.Let your head come back, opening your throat. Benefits: Stretches the front of the body including the chest, abdomen, and quadriceps. Improves spinal flexibility. Balances the Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Practice a little each day. If you can incorporate even 15 minutes of yoga into your day, you will notice your body, mind, and emotions begin to shift and change!

Boat Pose - Navasana Start from a seated position; bring the legs straight up to a 45 degree angle. Allow the torso to naturally fall back so that it creates a "V" shape with the body. Bring the arms out straight in line with the shoulders. Balance the body on the sit bones. Benefits: Builds abdominal and core strength. Balances the Navel Chakra (Manipura)

Child Pose - Balasana Sit on the knees keeping the big toes touching. Bring the belly to rest between the thighs and the forehead to the floor. Stretch the arms in front of you with the palms toward the floor Benefits: Gentle stretch for the hips, thighs and ankles. Can help relieve back pain. Balances Third Eye Chakra (Anja)

Corpse Pose - Savasana Lay down on the back and let the feet fall out to either side. Bring the arms alongside the body, but slightly separated from the body, and turn the palms to face upwards. Relax the whole body, including the face. Let the body feel heavy and breathe normally. Benefits: Allows the body time to process information at the end of an exercise. No yoga session is complete without the final pose – Savasana. The body needs this time to understand the new information it has received through practicing yoga. Do not allow yourself to sleep! You should stay aware during the 5 to 10 minute duration of final relaxation. It balances the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara).

health

A new year, a new start. But this New Year try ditching those tired old resolutions about diets and exercise – this new approach is all about relaxing and appreciating everything that is good.

Rejuvenate Your Mind, Body and Soul

M

ost of us start the new year by promising ourselves we will exercise more and it’s a good time to start something new and different but that doesn’t have to mean even more strenuous activity. Try a more gentle approach such as Pilates, Yoga or a relaxing swim because these movements help you to slow down and stretch – and complement your more vigorous workout perfectly. Or enjoy a leisurely stroll outside. Now is the perfect time to top up your Vitamin D levels and enjoy the sunshine. Dress in several light layers to keep out those chills and explore Doha’s beautiful parks. Take some time to stop and appreciate the plants and the trees and discover the features of these lovely green open spaces. Visit the Corniche during the day and linger to experience the sun setting over the harbour. Or if you are feeling adventurous head out to the desert

where you can stand in awe and wonder when there is nothing between you and the stars above. For more inspiration, visit the Museum of Islamic Art. But instead of hurrying from one exhibit to the next, take time to stand and study intently a selection of the artwork. Then promise yourself that you will return again and again to revisit your favourite works of art and discover yet more each time. Restoring your mind, body and soul also means that you must allow yourself to rest. Try to have more restful and deeper sleep by cutting out caffeine from the afternoon but keep well hydrated by sipping water or herbal teas. An hour before bedtime switch off screens and electronic devices and dim the lights. Your bedroom must be your sanctuary so it must be dark, cool and free of clutter. Have a warm bath or just a light shower so that you can focus on the sound of the water and feel the water

trickling over you. By so doing, you are developing mindfulness – when you are concentrating entirely on the moment. Keep your face cream and body oil or cream by your bed so that at the very last moment you can gently massage your face, hands and feet which helps to relax your mind and body. If you feel well and energized by good quality sleep you are much less likely to be tempted into comfort eating. Avoid quirky diets and make some simple changes to your eating by reducing the amount of fat, carbohydrate and sugar and increasing whole foods, fruit and vegetables. Try to eat plain low fat yoghurt everyday – perhaps with some fruit – as this will help to curb your hunger and is full of goodness. Allow yourself to enjoy some treats. A small bar of chocolate contains barely a hundred calories so let go of the guilt! Above all, learn to relax and be kind to yourself.

4

The Advance Technology Obalon Balloons

What is it? Obalon is the latest and unique technology to treat overweight patients, using the extraordinary Obalon Balloon, (smart capsule) which offers a quick, discreet, non-surgical and fully reversible weigh loss solution.

The Personal Trainer Cody Tilahun

Why get a personal trainer? There are many different types of personal trainers out there, which is why you need to be clear about knowing what you want to achieve which will help you to select the right trainer. For example do you want a trainer to get you fit to run a marathon or do you want someone to help you lose weight and tone up. You should also use a trainer that can set a nutritional plan; whatever your objectives your achievements are only likely to be maintained with good nutrition. How many sessions a week are recommended? Cody's training requires at least 3, but no more than 5 sessions a week, because rest and recovery is as important as the training itself. This also allows you to commit to your exercise and see results! Visible effects? Nutrition is the key ingredient to loosing weight along with exercising. It takes time and commitment to get the results you want but I can get you loosing up to 1 kilo a week by using my healthy fat loss diet and training. It can take up to three months to really see the results.Â

How does it work? 1. The Obalon capsule contains a balloon that is orally permitted and inflated to occupy the upper space in the stomach to create a feeling of fullness that can help you eat less. 2. At least two Obalon balloons should be swallowed and inflated during the treatment period and it may be increased to three balloons depending on the response and your needs. 3. At the end of the treatment period, the balloons are removed through a short endoscopic procedure. The entire procedure takes only 15 minutes with no sedation required. How many sessions are needed? Just the one. Visible effects? Studies have showed that you lose an average of 7.4% of your total body weight and 41% of excess body weight within 12 weeks of the balloon application, which is approximately 8 to 12 kilos within 3 months.

feature Ever wonder how you can lose those stubborn fats around your arms, thighs, hips and tummy? Lipocryo is your answer!

The Noninvasive Lipo LipoCryo

6

5

What is it? LipoCryo is a new technology that results in localised fat reduction within a selective and non-invasive procedure. How does it work? 1. A special transducer (suction handpiece) is positioned over selected area of the body. You may feel a firm pull where the suction handpiece is being placed. Its vacuuming action captures the fat tissues of the treated area, while the selective cryotechnology helps to cool it. 2. Fat cells are mostly saturated fatty acids rich cells which are highly sensitive to the cold exposure from the device, allowing fats to be selectively eliminated without damage to surrounding tissues. 3. Over the next two to four months, the crystallized fat cells will be broken down and naturally eliminated from the body. How many sessions are needed? According to your tissue thickness and your desired reduction, the amount of sessions required can be from 1-3 sessions, with a waiting time of about 45 days between each session. Visible effects? Depending on the tissue thickness, the average loss will be between 3-15mm; with a visible result within 15 days of approximately 40%. However, you will have to wait at least 6 weeks to appreciate the average results.

The Detox From Within – Raw ME

What is it? Raw ME is the No. 1 health brand in Qatar. The only company dedicated to producing high-quality, delicious and nutritious cold-pressed juices, corporate fruit baskets and premium raw packaged to-go snacks. How does it work? Raw ME cold presses and squeeze raw fruits, vegetables and nuts every day in their production facility. After chilling, blending and bottling juice, they then deliver directly to their clients to ensure safety and quality. Raw ME juices have a shelf life of 3 days. How often should I detox? A good rule of thumb is whenever you experience any of the following: fatigue, sleeplessness, anxiety/ depression, digestive problems, and of course, before and after holidays or any special events that lead to overindulging. Raw ME recommends doing a detox once a month for at least 3 days. Allowing your body the proper rest and recovery time it needs to maintain optimum health. Visible effects? Raw ME provides a selection of packages to suit all, as no one is on the same level. However, the benefits of a detox will be lost if you do eat solid food in addition to the juices. The idea of a detox is to only consume the juice so that your digestive system has time to rest, and this is indeed the one key thing to always keep in mind. Losing weight during the duration of the cleanse is the happy side effect. Where and cost? You can place your order on Raw ME: choose your package and complete the form. Prices vary depending on your choice of plans and package that best suit your individual lifestyles - payments can be made on delivery via cash, card or check. For more information Tel: 6613-9882 or email info@raw-me.com www.raw-me.com / @rawmeqatar

Ask Martyn Psychologist, life coach and consultant Martyn Stewart is ready, willing and extremely able to tackle your anxiety woes. Want to reach out to Martyn with your concerns? Then email: info@passareuk.com Remember, “a problem shared is a problem halved”

Q.

I’m getting to the point in life where marriage is a serious possibility for me. I want to make the right decisions. It sounds silly but, other than love, what should I REALLY be looking at for my marriage to last?

A.

Marriage is the start of your long-term legacy; the family, the reputation, the memories and the path your children follow. Some people aren’t ready for the changes, challenges or the compromises necessary for this growth. There are many aspects needed for true marital success. But one you should keep in mind is the ‘Three Strand’ theory; where 3 essential aspects must be built into the relationship's foundation. ‘His Life’, ‘Her Life’ and ‘The Life together’. If any strand doesn’t exist, the relationship becomes over dependent on the other two, (or even worse – one); which cannot possibly carry all that weight, which leads to problems. In short, you must always be a team, working inter-dependently. Too many people, give up their own identity, or try to eliminate their partner’s, believing it’s a ‘necessary sacrifice’ for the ‘life together’. This is a mistake however. Mature people understand, you’ll obviously have to alter your personal life in some ways, but both partners must retain their individual identity. Successful marriages are about continuous growth, reciprocal support and mutual maintenance. The ‘honeymoon period’ will not see you through decades together. This only happens through long-term interdependence, (as a team), not independence or over-dependence.

Q.

Martyn stewart Martyn Stewart is a recognised chartered psychologist with over 15 successful years assisting individuals worldwide via his mentoring, teaching and coaching. He is currently Head of Psychology at Doha College, one of the world’s top British international colleges. He is also a published author and popular public speaker.

I’ve been offered an unexpected promotion at work. But after working here for 7 years, I’m in a rut. I need a change. Contact Martyn for further information: However, I’m afraid leaving info@passareuk.com the security of my job is a huge mistake. I feel every I want to get in shape like my direction leads to a dead end. What friends for the new-year, but should I do? I don’t want to be one of those people who gives up after a few weeks, any tips to stay mentally strong? Why focus on just the negative aspects of these opportunities? You’ve been in the comfort zone for Many people give up on a long time, but don’t let that cloud getting fit because they have your decision-making. Change can be unrealistic expectations and goals. The frightening, so you need to look at the idea isn’t incorporated into their mind as whole picture, as clearly as possible. Start the lifestyle change it needs to be. This by making a list of the pros and cons of increases your chances of tripping at both options. This way you can consider the first hurdle. Everyone is different of the positives as well as the negatives. 7 course. You don’t have to become a gym years in your job suggests stability, skill enthusiast or experiment with the latest acquisition and competence, which the diet fad; but to be successful, healthy offer of promotion also suggests. On the other hand, recognition you’re in a rut and eating and regular exercise must become wanting change shows self-awareness and as integral to your routine as eating and sleep. implies you’re still ambitious for growth and new experiences. You need to manage your expectations

Q.

A.

I see few negatives here. ALL decisions involve leaps of faith. It’s your life. No one can live it for you. You’re responsible for the choices and for making the most of them. Be brave, make a decision that suits you and be confident in yourself to make the right one. There are no guarantees. You may choose to risk your current job security or relinquish the chance for change. However, if it’s a calculated and well researched decision, it may be the best thing you’ve ever done.

A.

You’re not in competition with anybody but yourself. Too many people base their goals on somebody else’s targets. So if you struggle, you’re more likely to get disheartened and quit. An individually designed plan by a fitness professional will help you go at your own progressive but challenging pace. You’ll create clear, realistic and most importantly achievable goals. Accomplishing each goal will help your new productive fitness attitudes and behaviour patterns become more automatic and replace the old ones. Good luck.

6 Organizing Resolutions to Jumpstart The New Year! By Suzy Cacic, Founder of BetterDecoratingBible.com

We’ve survived through the holiday season, and now its time to get our homes organized and under control! Follow our 6 easy tips to getting your life and home back on track!

Suzy Cacic

Tinsel, garbage, decorations, and leftover food – it’s time to pack it up and start 2015 on the right foot. When you live a disorganized, messy life, you’ll soon notice that things start to spiral out of control including your packed schedules, family life, and even mental and physical health! Starting a New Years resolution to get organized is easy, but sticking to it – not so much. Were here to help you develop some easy organization tips that will help you keep your home in spanking clean condition all throughout the New Year!

1

Making Cooking a Breeze Keeping your kitchen organized and clean makes cooking fun and cuts back on wasted time looking for ingredients and supplies. Keep your pantry in check by grouping like items together – a spice rack for spices, a basket to hold mix packets like Jell-O and sauces, and sections for canned goods, jars, and juices. Dedicate one drawer or shelf for plastic Tupperware containers and store away appliances like a food processor and blender to save on countertop space.

2

Set up a Home Command Centre

Every home should have a small section preferably near the kitchen or entryway where you can store your keys, calendar, phone, special notes and a schedule. You can make this into a mini office to keep the whole family on track. This is also a great way to keep up with chores, deadlines, kids' sports practices and other special events. Install mini shelves to sort your mail, credit cards, receipts, and make sure to have a notepad, pen, and paper.

68

ABODE January.indd 68

12/24/14 1:17 PM

3

Clear Out and Don’t Look Back Cleaning out your closet and parting with pieces form your beloved wardrobe is hard! Roll up your sleeves, set feelings aside, and decide what you want to keep and toss forever! If you haven’t worn something in years, if it’s out of style, the wrong size, or in need of repair – toss it. The clothes you decided to keep, sort them by season and how frequently you wear them. Hang your favourite outfits on a rack to save time dressing and ironing and stash out of season clothes in boxes. Have a lot of jewellery? Dedicate one drawer or shelf to hold your bracelets, necklaces, watches, and small accessories like scarves and sunglasses.

4

Set Aside One Wall for Storage

If you are lacking the storage space in a room, dedicate one wall for built-in shelves from floor to ceiling. Paint the shelves the exact same colour as the wall to make them visually disappear and not swallow up your room. Line each shelf with wicker baskets or storage boxes with labels to make things easy to find. This is a great idea for your bathroom to hold linens and towels, or for an office area to hold your office supplies. Organizing your things has never been easier, and this makes the perfect way to banish a mess!

6

5

Choose New Furniture Wisely

If you are looking at purchasing some new pieces for your home this New Year, make sure it fits your space and also supplies you with storage space! A big chunky coffee table really only takes up a lot of space – but a nice antique trunk makes the perfect table and incognito storage for extra pillows and blankets. Another incognito storage solution that’s really trending now is bar carts! They make a glamorous accessory but they also serve as a convenient place to store alcoholic beverages, extra glasses, and some of your prized serve wear.

Store Cleaning Products At Your Fingertips The one secret rule to keeping things clean and organized is placing your cleaning products in easy-to-grab locations. That means setting aside one shelf in each room or each floor of your house with a bucket of window cleaner, disinfectant spray, soap, a sponge, and paper towel. The things you use very day should be easy to reach to make cleaning stress free, and done in a snap! If you spill a drink on the carpet, or the pet has an accident, it’s super easy to whip out the cleaning products and get down to business. You’ll also be surprised at how much more frequently you’ll be cleaning when everything is right at your fingertips!

Detox Teas:

Are They Helpful For Detoxification?

With more and more people putting more concern on their health and wellness, detoxification products such as detox teas are becoming all the more popular.

W

hy Detoxify? The human body is created with its own detoxification system, which includes the skin, liver, kidney and the colon. The liver and the kidney filter out the toxins in the body, which goes out through the urinary system, the digestive system or as sweat through the skin. The body's waste management system works well under normal circumstances, but given today's fast paced lifestyle and extensive exposure to waste and toxins, the body can only deal with so much. This brings us to the need to detoxify, or cleanse the body and get rid of toxins and waste.

76

ABODE January.indd 76

12/24/14 1:18 PM

Detox Teas Help Detoxification There are plenty of ways to detoxify the body and detox teas are just one of them. Regular consumption of these detoxification teas produce a number of positive effects on the body, and these include:

1

Healthier Organs. Drinking this type of tea helps speed up the detoxification process, which lessens the pressure and the load on the liver, kidney and the colon. This, in turn, reduces conditions such as acne, bloating, indigestion, menstrual problems and other organ-related problems.

2 3 4

Better Elimination. These teas wash away plaque and waste formation on the colon, making bowel movement easier. This also aids in the reduction of water retention and better weight loss results.

Better Skin and Hair. A body that is full of toxins manifests itself in numerous ways such as acne in the skin or brittle nails and hair. Drinking detox teas can help balance the body's system, and clears out the skin making you look better and giving you that overall glow. Calm and Relaxation. These teas do not only detoxify the body and cleanse it, but also give you a feeling of calm and relaxation. This is very helpful especially if you are always stressed out.

Detox Tea Mix:

Here are two delicious ginger and lemon teas that are both helpful and delicious to start your day with. These will make about two small cups of tea (or one and a half mugs), but it should be strong enough for a larger teapot as well. Feel free to adjust any of the flavours according to your taste.

Ingredients Tea 1: > 2 Organic Lemons

Choosing a detox tea isn't really difficult as there are plenty of flavours and varieties in the market. Some types of herbal teas include green tea, ginger tea, chamomile tea, peppermint tea and Hawthorne berry tea. Each of these teas has its own distinct taste and has varying effects on the body, which is great considering the fact that you can try each of them for the purpose of variety.

> 1-Tablespoon Dried Parsley

If you're thinking of trying detox teas to cleanse the body, start with one variety first and drink just one cup a day. This is crucial so that you can see its effects on the body. When you have finally settled with a tea that you like, you can eventually amp up your intake to at least two to three cups. Drinking three cups is the maximum for herbal teas; so make sure that you do not go beyond that.

> A few sprigs of fresh mint

To make sure that your detoxification is a success, drink detox teas along with a healthy and sensible diet to make sure that you get the best effects of the cleansing and detox process.

> 1/2 Teaspoon fine Cayenne Pepper

> 1-Tablespoon Dried Mint > 2-3 Medallions Fresh Ginger > Raw, Unfiltered Honey (optional) Tea 2:

> Two Organic Lemons or one Lemon and one a few slices of Orange > Teaspoon Honey > 2-3 Medallions Fresh Ginger

> Two bags of Rooibos tea

Procedure 1) Finely grate the ginger and set it aside. Separate the mint leaves off the twigs and place them in a mortar with the ginger (option add cayenne pepper). 2) Mash the ingredients together then carefully place them in the teapot. 3) Add lemon in slices (and or oranges) and honey to the teapot with the ginger, mint and pepper mixture. 4) Add boiling water (add Rooibos Tea bags.) Give it all a stir and wait for it to steep. *Note: If you have a teapot that can go on the stove, put all the ingredients in that and let it boil for a few minutes. It will give you an even stronger brew.

10 things to throw out of your pantry and fridge now! By Cameron Black, General Manager of Fitness With Food

If your goal for the New Year is a healthier you, those cabinets full of sugary snacks and salty, over-processed junk food are your first serious roadblock. It's time to throw out your junk food in a dramatic blaze of glory so you'll stick to your convictions. Here's a top 10 guide to get you started to help you clean out once and for all.

1

Soy products: All of the non-organic soy on the market is genetically modified. It’s completely reasonable to avoid GMO soy, processed soy, and soy oil. But, fermented soy such as miso or tempeh does have redeeming qualities due to the probiotics it contains. Also check the ingredients and make sure it does not have added sugar.

2

Plastic tupperware: Avoid plastic containers for food and water. Use glass and get a stainless steel water bottle. Plastic contains BPA, which mimics estrogen, and when heated or microwaved can leach into foods.

3

Margarine and low fat products: If you don’t eat fat, or if you eat the wrong kinds of fat (Trans fats, hydrogenated fats, and excess vegetablederived fats), your cell lipid layers will be unhealthy, rigid, and impermeable. This causes insulin resistance and fat gain, nutrient deficiencies and persistent fatigue, and chronic inflammation. Certain fats, like those in nuts, seeds and oily varieties of fish provide essential fatty acids (including the omega-3 variety). These essential fats play a vital role in maintaining healthy blood vessels, hormonal balance and for the correct functioning of our nervous system, which is composed of mostly fat. Fat in our diet also aids in the absorption of certain vitamins, the fat-soluble ones, which include A, D, E and K. Prescribing yourself to a very low-fat diet makes you more likely to be low in these vitamins and that can impact your immunity, limit the body's ability to heal itself and have an influence on bone health. Focus on healthier fats by including more fish, nuts, seeds and oils such as coconut, avocado, and olive.

4

Low calorie products: You cannot compare 100 calories of chicken breast to 100 calories of ice cream and call them equal. They have completely different physiological responses and therefore calories are useless to count if your nutrition is an inferior one. Stop looking at the calories and opt for whole nutritious unprocessed foods.

78

ABODE January.indd 78

12/24/14 1:18 PM

t

Over time, habits become automatic, slowly change your bad eating habits into healthier new ones.

6

Anything containing HFCS (High Fructorse Corn Syrup) and or Sugar: If you’re eating or drinking these two items regularly you are essentially requesting your body to make you fat. Stop immediately.

7

Soda and concentrate juices: Look at the ingredients pure sugar, fructose, or HFCS. Just because it’s a fruit concentrate beverage doesn’t make it healthy.

8 9

Bread and starchy foods: Highly processed high sugar, zero benefit. Bread may fill you up but it will also fatten you out.

Seed and vegetable cooking oils: Choose a less processed cooking oil low in omega 6 fats and with a high smoking point. Corn oil for instance is 60% unstable, a polyunsaturated fat, and is most likely made from GMO crops = BAD NEWS.

10 5

Highly processed foods: If you can’t understand what the ingredients are, you can’t pronounce them, and sugar is one of them its 100% not a healthy option.

Dairy: About 75 percent of the world’s population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products. From an evolutionary point of view, milk is a strange food for humans, until 10 000 years ago animals were undomesticated and therefore it was impossible for us to use their milk as food. Humans or our descendants have been around a lot longer than 10 000 years ago, and therefore milk is a fairly new food for us. Most milk these days are highly processed, pasteurized and containing potentially harmful hormones so unless you are getting it straight from a grass-fed organic cow and drinking it in moderation ditch the dairy!

Now replace with these top 10 alternatives: 1) Coconut oil, avocado oil (cooking), olive oil (room temperature) 2) Glass tupperware 3) Grass fed organic butter 4) Single ingredient products or fresh food which expires in less than 3 days 5) Water (add lemon juice if desired) 6) Fresh fruit juice no added sugar (minimal) 7) Healthy carbs: eggplant, squash, wild rice, quinoa (minimal) 8) Fish, Lean Meats, poultry, eggs (organic when you can) 9) Green leafy and cruciferous vegetables (organic when you can) (maximize) 10) Tree nuts, seeds and some dried high fibre fruits.

Etihad Airways also unveiled a new cabin crew uniform at a spectacular catwalk fashion show, being the airline's first major uniform re-launch since the

company’s formation in 2003. Designed by Italian couturier, Ettore Bilotta, the new uniforms combine elegance, comfort and practicality, and have been created incorporating almost all the colours of Etihad Airways’ brand palette. Bilotta chose a warm chocolate brown as the base colour for the different uniform variations; a deep purple for cabin crew and lounge staff, and a burnt orange accent colour for ground crews and Special Services personnel.

The beautiful collection possesses a more aerodynamic and ‘retro’ inspired aesthetic, a sense of throwback to the iconic stars of the Hollywood Silver Screen, thus being classic, enduring and very much reminiscent of the muchadmired designer collections of airline crews in the heyday of international air travel. The new style will echo the Etihad Airways overall brand and enhance the airline’s reputation as the standardbearer of superlative customer service.

The architectural landscape is properly planned while the halls, walls and furniture were carefully placed to ensure that the outcome will reflect old-fashioned Qatar in the most endearing way. The CHECK IN EXPERIENCE One thing to love at Sharq Village & Spa is the people

who work there. They are friendly and professional in every manner. During my check in time, I was handled professionally and efficiently. The reception was a mirror of what is in store for me and my family during our stay: smooth, enjoyable and one of a kind. THE ROOM The deluxe room is very stunning and welcoming and it became more special with the pool view. I loved the bed with canopies as it exudes a royal touch, my kids and husband enjoyed nestling in the white, clean and very soft linens. The furniture still reflects old Qatar; it is amazing how they made it aesthetically beautiful without compromising the comfort of the guests.

AL LIWAN

SIX SENSES SPA

My favourite spa destination in Doha, Six Senses Spa aims to give the best to their clients. This time, we got to experience De-stress massage for 50 minutes. The ambiance, the scenery and I would say the smell from the essential oils they use, together with the expertise of the therapist make the whole process effective to wash away the stress.

The restaurant allows us to enjoy the Arabic and Western food presented in sumptuous buffet. We came here first time five years ago and my husband loved the lamb then and when he tasted it again he said that for him, it is still the best lamb in town. Al Liwan is highly recommended for family especially the children’s corner that has interesting menu and activities that keep them entertained.

PARISA

MEETING THE PAST Sharq Village & Spa will lead you to discover Qatar’s past; back when civilization was just arising. But for me, we’ve experienced the past by living like before gadgets ruled the world. We had a lot of time to play with our kids at the pool; took a stroll around the whole area and more importantly captured the memories with lots of pictures like a real tourist in a new destination. We enjoyed the whole time of our stay by spending a quality time as family. Staying at Sharq Village & Spa is for expats and locals who want a short get away from the stress in the city.

Doha has a few Persian themed restaurants, the newest and the probably the best is in Sharq Village and Spa and called Parisa. Matched by a breathtaking view, the food is good especially the grilled lamb, chicken and beef and the salad. But what I like best is how the tables and chairs were arranged to bring privacy to the guests.

society An afternoon with ambassador

of India to Qatar By Mary Nisansala Jayaweera Photography Jessie Palanca

His Excellency Ambassador Sanjiv Arora has been in Qatar for just over two years and enjoys Qatari hospitality and admires the nation’s ambitious plans for the future. Speaking exclusively to ABODE the Ambassador highlighted that the India-Qatar friendship is deep-rooted and imbibed in history and modernity.

How does the Indian Embassy assist the Indian community in Qatar to grow? Being India’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar for over 2 years is indeed an extremely fulfilling assignment. One of our top priorities is to sincerely and actively reach out to our large, diverse, accomplished and highly regarded Indian Community in Qatar in an inclusive manner to ensure their wellbeing and welfare. As a daily mission, we communicate with our large community to actively follow up with situations brought to our notice. We have been receiving good cooperation from the authorities concerned in Qatar and that is something we really appreciate. How does the Indian Embassy advocate education and assist Indian schools in Qatar? Education is an area of deep interest to both India and Qatar, are amongst the world's emerging knowledge economies. It is the keen desire on both sides to develop and expand linkages and

partnerships in the area of education. There is a proposal to set up an institution similar to the World renowned Institute of Technology and Management in India. This is a proposal on which both sides are actively engaged in and pushing it forward. We also have a few civic society organisations that have developed partnerships for the benefit of children, to provide education to economically disadvantaged children and one example is the Bharti Foundation who are partnering with Qatar Foundation for the Educate a Child initiative, to which they have adopted several schools in India. How would you describe your relationship with the Indian community here in Qatar? It is a relationship based on the highest priority: their wellbeing and welfare, as well as one of natural friendship. We have a regular and mutually productive exchange of views on several issues that relate to India’s interests, friendship between India and Qatar and the

wellbeing of the community here in Qatar. I would particularly like to highlight the responsibility we have towards our workers. We are responsible for each and every Indian national. It is our workers who have in many ways the most challenging tasks to perform. Their contribution to the growth and development of Qatar is well recognised and well appreciated by the government and people of Qatar. For our workers, we also have a very useful public-private partnership called the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF) that functions under the aegis of the embassy. The mission of the forum is to ensure the welfare of our workers. What plans does the embassy have to celebrate Republic Day? The Republic Day is when India adopted the constitution on 26th January 1950. It is always a great joy to celebrate these occasions with the broad participation of Qatari society, the Indian community and other expatriates. The Republic Day

96

ABODE January.indd 96

celebration is greatly looked forward to here, where we have an open house in the morning for all Indian nationals and friends of India. I would have the honour of hoisting the National Flag and reading the Honourable President’s message to the people. There will be other festivities and celebrations at The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) that functions under the auspices of the embassy. Last year we decided to have a large scale public event to present India in a holistic way. It was titled a ‘Passage to India’ and was held at Museum of Islamic Art Park. There were more than 25,000 visitors and what is heartening is that a large number of Qataris with their families came for the event. This year, the celebration will be sometime in February or March, and details will be announced by ICC. What do you most enjoy about Qatar? It is the spontaneous warmth and friendliness. When I first came I found the country to be a truly friendly and welcoming society. I greatly admire the way Qataris have preserved their rich culture, their traditions and the way they confidently achieve more and more progress in different spheres. There is a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity.

What are your achievements as a diplomat so far? Welfare of the community and business promotion are extremely important priorities for us. We have a long standing, reliable, mutually beneficial partnership with Qatar in the energy sector. Almost 2/3 of India’s LG import is from Qatar. This is an area of great potential for both sides. We are continuing our active engagement with our Qatari friends to increase the volume of Qatari investment. There are emerging opportunities for India’s corporate ventures here in Qatar. Defence is an important area of our cooperation. It is for the first time that we have a resident defence attaché. We are now preparing for a goodwill visit by one of the state-of-the-art ships, ICGS Vijit of the Indian Coast Guard. The visit was proposed from our side, in conjunction with Qatar National Day, as a symbol of our historic friendship. What is your message to the community at large? We are passing through very interesting times in this globalised world. There are shared opportunities and shared challenges for people from around the world. The future holds great promise

and potential for both India and Qatar. I would also like to underline the gracious hospitality of the government and people of Qatar. And I would like to reiterate my admiration of Qatar. Everyone working in this country should give of their best. This is what I discuss with the Indian Community. This is home away from home. I recall what my late mother wrote in my autograph book when I was leaving for boarding school. That has always given me inspiration. Quoting the 18th century poet Alexander Pope she wrote, ‘act well thy part, there all the honour lies.’

INDIA India has myriad attractions for people of varied tastes and preferences, be it in terms of history or monuments or places of devotion. Ambassador Arora shares his personal picks of touristic places to visit. The State of Rajasthan particularly the Thar Desert and the Pink City Jaipur, the capital. There is so much of history, old forts and palaces. It is a spectacularly, colourful state and truly a riot of colours. Visit Kerala, it is blessed with greenery and beautiful backwaters, lovely beaches and of course you will find centres for naturopathy and relaxation. There are also our famous snow-clad mountains and glaciers, the Himalayas. The Ladakh Plateau in Jammu and Kashmir are fascinating. India has achieved great progress in research, science & technology. It created history by becoming the first country to successfully launch a spacecraft into the Martian orbit on its maiden attempt. And of course the absolutely spectacular Taj Mahal. Which simply goes without saying is a wonder of the world.

the World’s most successful reggae band

UB40 By Sarah Linklett

Mickey Virtue, Ali Campbell and Astro Wilson

Vocalist, percussionist and trumpeter, Astro from world famous UB40, shared with ABODE his excitement for the band's upcoming trip to Doha this month. Along with singer and songwriter Ali Campbell and keyboard musician, Mickey Virtue, the band will be performing as evening entertainment on Friday 23rd January at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Golf. Q. Will you be able to stay in Doha for a while so you can get out and about and see the City? A. Well this is part of a World Tour so we may not be able to spend as much time as we would like. But we’re really interested in finding out about Doha and seeing how the country looks like now.

Q. Will you be watching the tournament? A. I love watching golf – I love any sport that involves hand-eye co-ordination. So yes, I hope I will be able to watch some golf as well.

Q. How do you imagine Doha to be? A. I know that the whole place has really been built up with amazing shopping malls that we can only dream about in England.

Q. Have you decided on your playlist? A. We’ll definitely be playing Red Red Wine, Kingston Town and Can’t Help Falling in Love – the classics that everyone knows - and we’ll be playing a real mixture including some of our new songs.

Q. Are you hoping to play a round of golf while you are here? A. I would love to. I had a gift of golf clubs four years ago and have only managed to get to the golf range twice in all that time! The weather is so rubbish in England and playing golf in the driving rain would be a non starter for me.

Q. How do you decide which songs to include? A. It’s a really difficult task – we’re never going to please everyone. We have so much material to draw on but there will be something for everyone! One of the beautiful things about music is that it evokes emotions only music can provide.

Q. How are Ali and Mickey looking forward to being in Doha? A. Just like me they love the weather there and we’re all looking forward to seeing this beautiful city.

Aisha AlNaama

“We are not just Qatari artists, we are global citizens.” In conversation with Aisha Al Naama.

Aisha Al Naama

By Michael Freeley, Studio88 photography jessie palanca

Abode spoke with Qatari artist Aisha Al Naama on how her unique art has been influenced by the rapidly changing cultural landscape of Qatar.

A

teacher when I grew up encouraged my talent from a young age, and art became a real outlet for me to express myself.” Admits Aisha as we sit down for a coffee on the Doha corniche on a sunny afternoon.

After practicing art throughout school and graduating high school with impressive grades, Aisha decided to study graphic design at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her first year at university widened Aisha’s exposure to art and design theory, leading to major in graphic design. “Graphic design is not limiting and this is liberating to me, there are many differing approaches and that flexibility was of interest to me.” Referring to her work Aisha confesses that she looks to Japanese culture as a major source of inspiration. “I identify with Japanese culture, particularly through the style of calligraphy and its lucid flowing style. I am interested in

the beauty of the brush stroke which is the ultimate symbol of creativity to me.” Flowers are a key theme Aisha’s work again which is heavily influenced by Japanese art of flower arranging called ‘Ikebana’. “The beauty is down to the spacing the careful thought process is something I like to add to my work despite it being considered abstract.” Matters soon turn to cultural diversity of Qatar, which Aisha acknowledges has changed a lot. “Growing up I have experienced the heart of the change. Qatar has become so culturally diverse over twenty years, which is a beautiful thing. Now I feel that this diversification has strengthened the connection of Qataris with our own heritage.” Aisha explains what defines Qatari art. "Art in Qatar is defined by what we as artists are creating & seeing in our surroundings. We are being influenced by the cultural diversity in the country. We are not just Qatari artists, we are global citizens. So we need to build our

conversation and dialogue on our art from our changing cultural space, this is what at this stage defines Qatari art.” Travel also plays a huge role in informing the work of Aisha The beauty in exposure to other cultures is that it redefines your own understanding of your culture & heritage. I see travel as a way of reconnecting with your identity. Because through visiting other countries you see how other things as being done, ultimately finding the gaps in your own understanding and trying to close those cultural gaps in your own community, hopefully I can achieve this through my work. Aisha is amongst a select band of young Qatari artists who are embracing the diversity of culture in the Gulf state. Her Japanese influenced abstract pieces are a real observation on the increasingly globally aware Qatari youth. After such an engaging and fascinating conversation, you cannot help but be excited in the next ten years for art in Qatar.

100 years The Maserati brothers’ first historic Bologna workshop. One hundred years ago, Alfieri Maserati and his brothers Ettore and Ernesto began what was to become a triumphant chapter in Italian automotive history. It was on Tuesday 1 December 1914, at number 1A via de’ Pepoli, in the heart of Bologna, that the three brothers opened their “car repair workshop and garage”. The “one-man business registration application” was submitted ten days later at the nearby Palazzo della Mercanzia, in what is now home to the Bologna Chamber of Commerce. The application was accepted and registered four days later. This was the start of Maserati’s long history. For all fans, the extraordinary exhibition “MASERATI 100 - A Century of Pure Italian Luxury Sports Cars” will remain open in Modena until the end of January. The exhibition, housed in Modena’s futuristic Museo Enzo Ferrari, allows visitors to retrace the Italian automotive firm’s history with a display of approximately twenty of its key road and racing models.
