KILLIAN JEWELLERY

Welcome From the desk of the Chairman Dear Readers,

It is with great excitement, hope and anticipation that I address our esteemed nation of Qatar in this 2016 New Year. 2015 was an incredible 12 months for us all, with countless achievements and milestones reached in the business, financial and social sectors. Our beloved Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, spearheaded our growth to new levels last year, once again representing Qatar internationally with the utmost grace and dignity. Under the wise leadership of our beloved Emir, Qatar’s economy actually grew by 4.5% in the first half of 2015 – a remarkable achievement. Qatar performed very well last year as a result of a huge public infrastructure investment program, which is set to continue from January 24-27 when Qatar hosts the Mena Rail Facilities Management and Operational Readiness Summit supported by Qatar Rail. This MENA Summit is aimed at further developing our impending rail system and encouraging us to be ready when the rubber hits the rail. Our local sports calendar is positioned to become much busier over the coming year, with many major events returning to our shores at an average of more than seven per month. Most notably, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open will be held between January 4-9 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex. World Number 1 ranked player, Novak Djokovic, will be joined by four other stars in the ATP World Top Ten as the tennis season kicks off in Qatar. After attracting 150,000 car lovers and trade professionals in 2015, the Qatar Motor Show is also slated to return to the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre for the sixth successive year from Jan 27-Feb 1. The show will feature some of the world’s most renowned automotive brands in the sports, luxury and mid-range categories, as well as super cars and concept cars. In fact, Qatar will host an astonishing 55 exhibitions this year, with another high-profile event being the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition held from February 23-27. This year, Qatar is poised to develop even further than we did in 2015, and being a part of that growth is of great pride to myself and the team here at ABODE Magazine. And so, in this spirit, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy and prosperous 2016.

Lights and Reflections Collection

Kilian Hennessy

Compiled by marisela paesano

L

ast month, Kilian introduced fans to the first colorful, fabric-based pieces in his 2-years-old scented jewelry line. This fall, the perfectionist perfumer and heir to the Cognac makers lineage returns to his roots with the Lights and Reflections Collection, an art deco inspired collection with an edgy R&B twist. As with past endeavors, Kilian’s olfactory artistry meets haute couture designs personify dark, sexy and smart offerings that have become synonymous with the brand. Created specifically to be worn by those who have post-dinner parties and plans, Lights and Reflections offers the wearer an alluring, sophisticated sensibility paired with the vibrant energy of the streets. “Luxury is the combination of being excessive and essential, and this collection embodies both those qualities,” Kilian says. “What you create must be in tune with the aesthetics in the street. That’s why Lights and Reflections are the perfect juxtapositions to art deco meets R&B.”

10

Lights and Reflections mark the 5th addition to his compilation of scented jewelry art, which range in price from $250-$595. Designed with a sophisticated approach, the collection offers grand statement pieces while pairing the classic, opulent feel art deco exudes. In pure Kilian fashion, the mix-master pushes his artistic boundaries, seamlessly blending olfactory experiences with wearable perfume accessories. For this season, he offers six exceptional, lavish and distinct jewelry designs created in both gunmetal and 14K-plated, shiny yellow gold. Each highly curated piece - be it earrings, necklaces, rings or cuffs - is given richness, texture and lumination with sparkly, white Swarovski pave crystals and rich onyx. Dimension is added from the cage system that houses the scented ceramic pieces.

Unlike the Spring/Summer collection, where the perfume was fused into microcapsules inserted directly into the heart of the fabric’s fiber, with Lights and Reflections he returns to his signature and sought-after scented ceramic. Rechargeable and interchangeable, each ceramic is engraved with a “K" and is secretly hidden via a caged system inside the jewelry and can be sprayed with any of Kilian's 35 fragrances. The scent is then diffused through the jewel, wrapped around the wearer like a subtle, yet beautiful and pleasant invisible force field. “When you work with ceramic, the scent is never gone. There're a longevity and lasting effect that is very important to me,” says Kilian. “These pieces are also bigger than ones we’ve worked with before, which allows for a great distribution and a larger scented statement.”

Each item is created using either 14k gold plate or gunmetal and is paired with white Swarovski pave crystals and onyx.

According to Kilian, creation has no rule. A concept includes; researching, mood boards, thinking about the foundation, designing, illuminating, creating and refining. The result is a lavish, decadent and sophisticated line that radiates and exudes luxury, affluence, and desire.

T

he boutique will operate in partnership with Ali Bin Ali Watches & Jewelry, Qatar’s leading retailer for Haute Horlogerie, and is located in the Porto Arabia precinct of Doha’s exclusive shopping island, The Pearl-Qatar. The Pink Lady Sapphire Watch features the pioneering case technology that was first used in the men’s RM 056 Tourbillon Sapphire. The RM 07-02 Pink Lady Sapphire features a new in-house CRMA5 caliber assembled around a skeletonized plate in microblasted 5N gold set with diamonds, protected by a pink sapphire crystal case. It is dedicated to women who are becoming more and more intrigued by the complexity and technicality of watchmaking.

Peter Harrison, CEO of Richard Mille Europe, the Middle East and Africa comments: “It is a great pleasure to mark the opening of the first monobrand Richard Mille Boutique in Doha, Qatar, with a spectacular event held with our partners and friends at Ali Bin Ali. Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2016 Jason Wu this season is breaking all the rules. It’s confusing enough for the non-fashion savvy folk when stores start filling up with Spring/Summer wear during below zero temperatures in New York, London and Paris. The timing of the collection releases and the fabrics used are always contradictory to the weather outside, so Wu plans on changing things up a bit for this interseasonal collection. ABODE selected this extraordinary silver and gold fox coat to highlight the subtle fusion of men’s and women’s wear throughout, in each slip dress and shirtdress, some coming in menswear patterns like houndstooth and herringbone. A dainty camisole was paired with a slouchy suit, another nod to the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine details. This collection gives us all a pretty good idea as to what promises to be early 2016’s biggest trend. For more, visit www.jasonwustudio.com

I'll admit it: I'm a control freak. I am. If I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it 110% or there's no point in doing it at all, especially if the work takes me away from time with my husband and children.

The rise and rise of

Victoria Beckham By Domenica Fitch

O

nce considered as somewhat of a novelty, Victoria Beckham has turned a full circle and gone from fashion victim to fashion victor, having launched her first collection in September 2008, dubbed ‘one of the hottest things going in New York’. On that day, press gathered in a suite in the Waldorf-Astoria preparing to witness a celebrity vanity project from the former pop star with zero experience and whose personal style had, until

16

A fashion icon, Victoria Beckham has graced the cover of countless glossy fashion magazines, but just how did the ex-Spice Girl and wife of football sensation David Beckham conquer the fashion industry? Since the launch of her first limited edition line for Rock & Republic in 2004, she has taken the fashion world by storm. Her label is now a regular fixture of New York Fashion Week and generates sales of more than £30 million per year. recently, been notable for double denim ensembles and extremely bad fake tan. However, when the collection of ten dresses appeared on the runway, the hard-to-impress fashion world woke up to the fact that Victoria was determined to conquer the world of fashion. With every passing season, Beckham proves her worth as a fully-fledged fashion designer, showcasing sophisticated and flattering garments that are ultra

wearable. Bold and refined, the original Victoria Beckham label is stocked in over five hundred stores across the world with dresses priced at over two thousand pounds each. Known initially for its dresses, the brand has now expanded into separates with its denim, eyewear, fragrance and handbag lines with luxury handbags selling at up to 18 thousand pounds a piece. By 2011, the label was a fixture of New York Fashion Week, and consequently Victoria reached perhaps

the peak of her career, winning Designer Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, claiming the prestigious title over the likes of Tom Ford and Burberry. Victoria has made the successful transition into a well-respected designer, with her line charting as one of the top 25 bestselling brands on Net-A-Porter, the online designer fashion retailer. Showcasing only the finest craftsmanship, fabrication and materials, all five of Beckham’s lines are developed in her London studio. In the past, the ex-Spice Girl has been accused of sticking to the same old tried-and-tested formula of chic black ensembles and skyscraper heels. However, last summer saw the launch of her circus-inspired prespring 2016 collection. Silhouettes are more fluid, with flowing maxis, billowing sleeves and slouchy capes citing the striking color combinations and graphic motifs of fairground iconography as her inspiration behind this huge change of direction. Think splashes of tangerine and giant buttons in the shape of daisies. Something we’re certainly

not used to seeing from the chic and sophisticated label! After seeking her first store location for many months, Victoria finally opened her first store at number 36 Dover Street in London – collaborating with architect Farshid Moussavi to transform a neglected Mayfair townhouse into a dynamic and contemporary shopping destination. Victoria is extremely handson and can often be seen working hard in her London studio, however, this success did not just fall at Victoria’s feet. Being a designer was always a vision of Beckham’s from a young age, she says herself ‘’I always wanted to be a fashion designer, but then came along the Spice Girls. I was never going to be the world’s best singer, but I hope I can be a good designer’’. With raving reviews from her debut collection, it was clear that Victoria was determined to rid her novelty name in exchange for one of a well-respected designer - mastering her craft through hard work and sheer passion.

BODE caught up with Grzegorz Jarocki, Managing Director at the LPP Group, who is responsible for the expansion of the flagship RESERVED brand in the Middle East, and here’s what he had to say.

Faux fur shawl, QR 125

Silver long dress, QR 225

ABODE: How is Reserved different from other high-street brands? Grzegorz Jarocki: RESERVED is a leading Polish clothing brand that offers the most fashionable trends for women, men and children. What distinguishes our brand is, above all, a wide range of products offered. The RESERVED brand includes collections that are in line with global trends in which our clients find simple and classic designs, fashionable styles and original patterns. It is worth noting that RESERVED is a fast fashion brand. The latest models are delivered to our stores every three weeks. It is undoubtedly a great asset. When buying in the RESERVED stores, clients may always be sure that they choose the current "top" products. A: What’s next for Reserved in Qatar and abroad? GJ: As for Qatar, the most important event in this market for us will be the opening of a RESERVED flagship store in Villaggio Mall in February next year. We are proud that our brand will be present in one of the five top shopping centres in the region. Next year, we are also planning to open our first RESERVED store in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. A: What’s your highlight from the Reserved latest collection? GJ: What we are particularly proud of is the PREMIUM line, which debuted last month. It includes products that are characterized by very high-quality materials and attention to details, from threads in the lining to selected slides and elegant buttons. Another strong point of the fall-winter 2015/16 collection is the CONCEPT line. It is the most sophisticated collection by RESERVED that delights our clients with a combination of simple forms and unique fabrics. The main inspiration for that collection is retro style straight from the 1970s and, as a contrast, modernity. When analysing the strengths of our fall-winter offer, we need to mention the 40 pieces collection designed by the famous model Georgia May Jagger. We have been working with Georgia since 2013 and collaborating on this collection was the crowning achievement of our working relationship, of which we are very proud. Reserved’s sophisticated taste and smart styles have reached the ‘young and old’ fashion forward of the region. Surely we’ll see countless collections in the future, keep your tabs updated.

BODE: Mr. One, you started sketching and designing clothes around the age of 15. Has this passion for clothes always been with you? Furne One: I think I started playing with my sisters' dolls and dressed them up when I was young. I started sketching dresses at around 15 years old then continued until I went to college. As a boy, I would keep to myself and spend most of my time alone with my imagination, sketching dresses. As I grew older, I became a bit rebellious but over time I grew out of that phase and started focusing on my career.

Our ready to wear line will consist of basic pieces (t-shirts, sundresses, shorts, etc.) but with a twist, of course! ABODE: You have created clothing for countless celebrities including Katy Perry, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Shakira. How does it feel to be in such high demand? FO: I'm very overwhelmed by it! I mean, who wouldn't be? Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Rita Ora, Jessie J. and Nicole Scherzinger (to name a few) are huge names, and they have tons of other designers to choose from right at their fingertips - but instead they chose to wear Amato. It makes me feel proud and honored. ABODE: How do your Emirati, Qatari and Saudi Arabian customers like their dresses designed? FO: Like the city of Dubai, women in Doha have also adapted to the styles and trends of Europe and America. There's also a growing number of young designers in the country. The country itself has become a melting pot of different cultures and fresh ideas that make the Doha fashion scene even more interesting. ABODE: We are on the brink of 2016, what would you like to achieve with AMATO next year? FO: Amato intends to grow and expand from a singular brand into a global fashion empire. It sounds ambitious, I know, but I do not doubt the possibility.

The ‘No Makeup’ Look Beauty is all about healthy, glowing skin. Light foundation, translucent powder and a brush of mascara is usually all you need, not forgetting the peachy gloss to round it all up. To perfect this look, a tinted moisturiser is key to providing a glow to keep skin both hydrated and fresh without the excessive coverage. To make sure you’re using the lightest touch, do your makeup in daylight, if possible. Prop up your mirror near a window for maximum exposure.

Redefine Your Features! Highlighting and contouring is something that makeup artists have been using forever on celebrities, but it wasn’t until recently that it became part of everyone’s makeup routines, even those of us who are just going to school and work. Highlighting and contouring is a maze of do’s and don’ts. One of the best face contouring tips is that concealer wasn’t just made for underneath the eyes to combat dark circles, but also anywhere on your face that has shadowing. The best way to get this look right, according to the experts at Wojooh, is to select a contour color that is two shades darker than your skin tone and a highlighter that is two shades lighter. Applying the darker shade to the hollows of your cheeks and down the sides of your nose, and highlighting your cheek bones and down the middle of your nose gets you the picture perfect ‘I just spent hours on my makeup’ look. Oh, and blend, blend, blend! Supercharged Lips The supercharged lip comes from a combination of lips being in excellent condition and the application of the right cosmetics. Keeping the rest of the makeup minimal is the key to achieving this look. Lips should remain the facial focal point, so don't have other focal points competing with this, such as the eyes. All you need is an elegant slick of eyeliner, highlighted cheekbones and clean skin. Equally, don't overdo the gloss.

Beauty Ritual 4000 years ago women sought the power of oils and now L’Oréal Professionnel is honouring the tradition by creating a Mythic Oil for the hair. There are three Mythic Oils to choose from depending on your need. Mythic Original offers your hair shine and combats free radicals to keep your hair healthy. Mythic Rich Oil offers 48-hour anti-frizz and humidity protection, good for hot weather like Qatar. For colour-treated hair, Mythic Colour Glow Oil is radiance-infusing oil to keep it looking silky and strong. Convenience wise, the epilator is a sure bet. You can bring it with you anytime, and you can do it privately. With the hair service you have to arrange for an appointment, however, you can find many clinics in Doha who offer the service. But if you are concerned about pain, hair laser is preferable. To sum it all up, both are good but it depends on which factor weighs more, are you for convenience or less pain? And oh, by the way, do not forget to consider your budget as the latter might snatch a portion of your money.

let'sgetpampered Anantara Spa at Banana Island

Discover a new generation of facials

while surrounded by a tranquil island oasis

A sanctuary within a sanctuary, the spa overlooks the Arabian Gulf’s glittering waters and offers treatments that coax the body, mind and spirit into a beautiful balance. Going to Banana Island is always a good plan, and as I crossed the bridge to the exotic island, I expected a memorable and enjoyable experience. By Marisela Paesano

U

pon arrival, the Spa was welcoming and the decor deeply rooted in the culture of Thailand, the ambience in perfect harmony with the allure of the beautiful island. I was introduced to my therapist, who conducted a skincare consultation, during which she took, and then analysed, detailed photographs of my skin and provided me with a tailor-made treatment according to my skin type. I was recommended the BIOTEC Therapy & Skin Solutions, a combination of BIOTEC Radiance and Prointense Lift Effect facials.

What is a Biotec facial? The Elemis BIOTEC is a high technology machine that delivers highly effective, super-charged facial treatments to re-boot cellular performance, enhancing the skin's ability to repair, renew and re-tone. It’s a new generation of facials, and each treatment targets specific skin needs to deliver immediate, visible, longlasting results. The BIOTEC Radiance is a radiance-boosting, bio-electric facial to energise tired, dull and stressed skin. Target tired face and eyes with the brightening Radiance Activator, rich in anti-oxidants, hyaluronic acid and peptides. Ultrasonic vibrations draw impurities to the surface and exfoliate while galvanic current with elderberry and orange flower extract re-energise and restore vital moisture. Skin appears more radiant and luminous while helping reduce dark circles under the eyes.

52

The BIOTEC Pro-intense Lift Effect is a high-tech facial that helps to re-educate the facial muscles to tone and shape the facial contours. Specialist techniques lift and firm the jowls, jawline, cheeks and chin, smooth out deep-set wrinkles, and also plump and tone sagging skin of the face, neck, décolleté and eye area. What does the treatment involve? My facial treatment started with a quick cleanse and a targeted hydrating and plumping serum was massaged deeply into my skin. My skin was then exfoliated using an ultrasonic frequency wand that loosens dull, dead cells with vibration, rather than scrubbing. Then after another layer of serum was applied I was treated to a collagen face mask - and a relaxing neck massage while waiting for it to set. After the mask had been removed, a final layer of serum and moisturiser was applied. Did it work? Absolutely! My skin was brighter, smoother, more even-looking and felt pleasantly plump and damp at the end of the treatment. I would absolutely go back whenever I need a radiance and lifting boost. D/Code™

Where Wellness Meets Science By annabel rooney

A

majority of people associate the concept of ‘wellness’ with luxury, pampering, and beauty at a SPA, rather than as a more holistic concept of improving health and quality of life through fitness, nutrition and relaxation. Why? In a market saturated with information about celebrity diets and miracle anti-aging products or weight loss treatments, it is difficult to figure out what would work best for you. But what if science had the answers to your wellness? No doubt for many of us, the goal for 2016 is to live a healthier lifestyle for our families and ourselves, but what does it take to truly achieve that goal? Que D/ CODE™ by B/ATTITUDE. This wellness plan is a pioneering concept in Qatar that combines cutting-edge science to unlock clients' genetic data and lifestyle patterns and translate it into a clear, detailed wellness plan through personalized coaching and holistic wellness solutions. Chris Moore, Managing Director of Nordic Labs, had this to say about the pioneering concept: “Genetic science advancements have been able to identify genes-related sport performance, nutrition and health, thus enabling us to maximize our own personal goals using a deeper understanding of our personal genetics. Our genes never change, so unlike other health tests, you can learn practical information to help eliminate a lot of the guesswork that goes with getting fit and eating right.”

D/CODE™ undoubtedly gives you the information that you need to change your lifestyle for the better, as the old adage goes: prevention is better than treatment. This revolutionary technology acts like a roadmap, giving you the power to change your destination and hopefully make informed decisions to lead a happier and healthier life.

Tajana Trtanj,

General Manager of B/ Attitude Doha, believes that the company’s scientific approach to wellness will mark the future of the industry: “We tailor our clothes, customize our cars, and personalize our living space with a great deal of care. And yet, our physical, mental, and emotional wellness is often related to clichés, trends or guesswork, without much personal or professional insight into ‘why’ a service or a product would be the right choice for us. With D/CODE™ we decided to bring science into the wellness equation and empower clients with knowledge to better manage their lifestyle choices.” Take the test and stop the guesswork with B/Attitude Beverly Hills Tower, 2nd floor PO Box 15068 West Bay, Doha. RUN to

a healthier life! By Rowad Ehlela & Dina Labuchagne of EVOLVE

A sedentary lifestyle was once unheard of, however, in modern times we are rabid with new technologies, cosmetic surgery solutions and packaged products that promise us quick and easy results. With all of this, the focus of living a healthy lifestyle is becoming a disillusioned choice for avid fitness lovers and not a commonly accepted practice in society. Breaking the mould on lifestyle related diseases is subsequently becoming tougher with both diabetes and obesity on the rise worldwide.

So why running?

Running is a practice that has remained consistent within the fitness industry for very valid reasons. The benefits of running to the human body are simply irreplaceable by modern day entrepreneurs designing the latest ‘60 seconds abs’ or a 'magic muscle pill'.

The journey is one of both physical and psychological betterment and, therefore, is a great platform for individuals to discover their full potential and begin a fresh start! The beauty of solitude is what massively appeals to most runners as it is as much a workout for your soulful being as it is for your physicality. When we run, we are given a unique opportunity to reflect on our lives and the happenings around us. As we escape our day to day lives, stresses and commitments we get a brief opportunity to use the trial of running to our advantage, to push ourselves to new limits and psychologically condition ourselves to become better! Like any

54

other sport, though – you must be trained to practice correctly. Firstly, we must be true to the reason we choose to run, however know that no matter what the reason is, the purpose will become greater once we are under way. If you are running to lose weight and simply do not know many other methods of training then that is great, regular running alongside a stable diet (which we talk more on below) will help with weight-loss and cardiovascular endurance. Secondly, do not lose hope – if you are new to running it is easy to fall off the wagon once things get tough, or you simply lose focus and do not prepare time for it. Like anything new you must be persistent for it to become a habit so ensure that you develop a routine from the get go! I would recommend that you start in the morning. Running in the morning allows you to set a positive start to your day, it gets the blood flowing and the endorphins

circulating in the body, yes it may mean earlier nights but you will soon see the benefits that come from being an ‘early bird’. It is key that you find what works best for you whether it is outdoors or on a treadmill – personally I would recommend outdoors as enjoying the route you are on is half of the fun and it will keep you from disengaging as is often the case when stuck inside of a gym. Find a running partner if you struggle to motivate yourself; it's a great way to maintain progress, and having someone to encourage you on a cold mornings wake can be crucial! Alternatively, the beauty with running is that you can record and track your times and progression to ensure that you are constantly motivated to do better and achieve more. Setting short goals and targets in which to aim for can almost act as your motivating factor as much as a running partner would. It is vitally important that to make the most out of your running you are fuelled up appropriately, here are some top tips from Evolve Nutritionist Dina Labuchagne.

Nutrition tips

When running, our bodies need extra fuel to maintain energy levels to keep up endurance and strength. Making good nutrition choices assists in keeping our bodies free from inflammation and injuries.

Whether you've just started out as a runner, maybe a part of a new year’s resolution, or have been at the running game a long time now, you should ask the question; are you prepared nutritionally to maintain your running schedule? Keep in mind that you are burning about 100 calories for every mile you are running so it is important to adapt your eating habits to prevent weakness and fatigue after a running session. To optimise the value of running it is important to start looking at what you eat as well as when you eat, both of these will affect your endurance as well as your performance. Running should be fun and enjoyable and not feel like you are dragging your feet from the lack of energy or feeling like you are bouncing around because of bad eating habits. So what does a runner’s plate look like and when should you eat snacks and what to drink for hydration, there are so many things but here are five main tips for eating healthy while running. 1 Choose quality Carbohydrates • Carbohydrates fuel workouts and help maintain muscle energy stores to prevent muscle weakness • Good sources of Carbohydrates include fruits, vegetables and grains like quinoa and oats 2 Stay Hydrated • Keeping hydrated will help boost your performance and prevent exhaustion. Water remains the main hydration option after a workout and replenishes electrolyte stores; coconut water is also a good alternative. 3 Include Omega 3 fats in your diet • Omega 3 will help prevent inflammation and muscle discomfort, good sources are flaxseed, wild caught salmon and walnuts. 4 Protein for muscle repair and build • Consume adequate high-quality proteins spread out through the day such as lean meat, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt, almond milk and soy products. 5 Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants • Don’t forget the micronutrients; they assist in keeping your immune system healthy, optimum energy production and maintain/repair muscle tissue. Include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily, this can also be included in smoothies. Enjoy your journey – Running will provide you with the perfect platform to live a healthier life, it is a proven remedy for stress and depression as well as diabetes/obesity. The escape it offers you is of real value so make use of it and see where it can take you.

The Art of Upcycling

A

s the old saying goes, one mans trash is another mans treasure. The same can be said for Alleine Khalifa and her husband Omar, who have lived and worked in Qatar for the past 9 years. After suffering what they call a ‘’post-partumart-repression’’, the couple decided to co-found Watermelon Ink, a small business established on the idea of upcycling, where they sell repurposed second hand goods with a twist. They transform wasted bottle caps, rustic jars and abandoned buttons into beautiful works of art that can be used in our day-to-day lives.

58

Trash cans and unsalvageable furniture would peak no interested to the average passer-by, but for the Khalifa’s, its all a pile of raw material just waiting for an overhaul. Nothing is ever rubbish. ‘’We love to make things. We also love everything watermelon, and in the spirit of such a flexible fruit, we wanted to create just as many diverse, fun and appealing products.’’ Their favoured technique of decorating is decoupage that involves refurbishing objects with layers of glued-on paper cutouts, gold leaf and other 2D items until the final product looks like a painted-on work of art. Their passion slowly turned into the business of upcycling where they

Chefs, 3 LowCalorie Dishes Compiled by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography by Jessie Palanca

ABODE has added a little twist this month to our chef challenge. Instead of challenging the chef with a non-traditional ingredient, we wanted to feature something more exciting. It’s the New Year and we thought why not challenge three chefs from the newly opened outlets in Medina Centrale-The Pearl, to prepare three dishes that are waistline friendly? Sounds easy right? Well, check out the results below and judge for yourselves. Happy eating without worrying about the calories!

howto A low fat twist on traditional Fish & Chips

Hammour with Fennel Chips stepbystep Food prepared by Chef Frank Bordoni Photography by Jessie Palanca Feature Coordinated by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Location Shoot at Al Jazeera Cafe

After celebrating and lots of naughty food indulgence during the holidays, it’s about time we revamp our diet, without leaving behind our comfort foods. So the classical ‘fish and chips’ comes to mind but what about all the fats it contains? We asked the renowned UK celebrity chef, Frank Bordoni, former food editor, member of the Guild of Food Writers and award-winning food director, to concoct a diet-friendly version of our favorite comfort food. Chef frank bordoni

step 1 Prepare the Ingredients: 4 tranches of Hammour about 175g each > 1 Tbsp. of Olive Oil for brushing. For the Fennel Chips > 1 Large head of Fennel > 1 Egg, beaten > 1 tsp. picked fresh Thyme leaves > Grated rind of half a lemon > 6oz Corn Flour > Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the Bagna Cauda > 6fl oz olive oil > 1 Tbsp. unsalted quality butter, melted > 12 Anchovy fillets > 6 Large garlic cloves, crushed and minced > 1 Tbsp. of finely chopped shallots > 1 Tbsp. of mini capers, drained. Garnish: A few sprigs of Italian (flat) parsley and a lemon wedge to garnish.

68

step 2 Prepare the fennel. Cut the bulb lengthways into chunky chips and place in a bowl with the corn flour, thyme, lemon zest and seasoning. Toss well and add the beaten egg to make a quick batter. Set the fennel chips aside. Blend the olive oil, butter, anchovies and garlic in a food processor until smooth. Transfer the oil mixture to a heavy saucepan and add the shallots and capers. Warm over low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper and set aside, keeping warm for serving. The dip should be served slightly warm, not hot!

Word from the Chef: This recipe puts a spin on traditional fish and chips by grilling the fish and using fennel to make the ‘chips’ instead of potatoes. Fennel is renowned for its health benefits being full of fibre and essential nutrients. The sauce is similar in taste to a traditional tartare sauce adding flavour and sharpness to the dish but swaps the full-fat mayonnaise base with extra virgin olive oil and fresh garlic which is famed for boosting the immune system and improving cholesterol.

courtesy oF

Aspire Katara Hospitality

step 3 Cook the fennel chips. Place the chips into a fryer at 180° and cook for 5-8 minutes until the fennel is tender and the batter is crisp and golden. Drain well with kitchen paper to absorb any surplus oil.

Cover the sides with roasted sliced almonds.

step 4 Cook the fish. Season and brush the fish with olive oil. Place on a grill tray and cook under a hot grill or in the oven at 220° for 8-10 minutes.

Serve the fish with a stack of fennel chips and spoon over a little of the anchovy sauce – garnish with the parsley and lemon.

A DESERT OASIS

If you’re looking for a luxury desert experience like no other, it’s on your doorstep. In Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE’s jewel, you can walk through a rainforest, hold a peregrine falcon or relax in your own private villa pool at a multi-awardwinning spa resort. By Dawn Gibson

Y

ou know that feeling when you’re absolutely desperate for a vacation? Or at least a few days’ off? That was exactly the way we felt when we arrived at Banyan Tree Al Wadi, not so fresh from a busy week in Doha and primed for some down time. Luckily, we discovered we had come to the right place.

On our first evening, we dived into bed so quickly we barely registered our surrounds. The next day, though, dawned beautifully bright and we realized we were at one of the most opulent resorts we had been fortunate enough to visit. Just over an hours’ direct flight from Doha (but more about that later), Banyan Tree Al Wadi is set in its own nature reserve in Ras Al Khaimah, an Arab Emirate with an ancient red desert terrain fringed by mountains and white beaches. A PRIVATE POOL AND ARABIC HOSPITALITY The deluxe villas which nod to traditional Arabic architecture, yet boast all the modern trimmings, are linked by pathways that wind

74

past the resort’s spa, restaurants and reception. It’s so large that guests get about by chauffeured golf buggy or by the bicycles thoughtfully provided. Each villa has its very own temperature-controlled pool. We wasted no time jumping out of bed to stroll out onto the decking and take a dip in our little water sanctuary. Surrounded by greenery, our private pool was one of the highlights of the stay, especially when a friendly oryx wandered over from the nearby dunes on one occasion to find out what the splashing was about.

The Spa-Bliss

Zeta Restaurant/Lounge

We stayed in an Al Rimal Deluxe Pool Villa. About the size of an average UK holiday cottage, it was based around a luxurious bedroom with a comfy king size bed, a tent-styled high ceiling and intricate Arabic lattice woodwork. The rest of the villa was just as fancy – I particularly loved the deep stand-alone bathtub and the rain shower in the stylish bathroom, as well as the walk-in wardrobe, while my husband was pleased to find a sitting room with a plasma TV, DVD player and audio system. The free wifi is super-fast, much faster than you would expect at a desert retreat. SPA DAYS Banyan Tree is well known world-wide for fabulous spa facilities, and Al Wadi is no sloucher in this department. The spa has picked up a slew of awards, including Destination Spa of the Year for the Middle East & Africa at the World Spa & Wellness Awards 2014, so I expected good things. I was particularly intrigued by the promise of the signature Rainforest Experience, one of only a handful of such facilities around the world. Normally QR250, in-house guests can visit the rainforest for a discounted rate of QR130. You start with a rain walk, during which you are drenched with a warm tropical downpour than delightfully sprayed with a fine mist, before proceeding to 13 other stations designed to awaken your senses. I particularly enjoyed the messy but therapeutic citrus and sea salt scrub, and a sauna with the lulling scent of eucalyptus and herbs. The experience ends in the Romanesque vitality pool, which has a series of hydro-massage stops focused on different parts of the body. Allow 90 minutes for the Rainforest Experience so you can enjoy each section without feeling rushed. I was reluctant to leave, but leave I had to, as it was time for archery class.

AT HOME WITH NATURE One of the most interesting aspects of Al Wadi is that it is not just a resort for lounging and chilling. There’s plenty to do, and there are many activities that pay tribute to the traditions and culture of the region. Several activities are complimentary for guests – a falconry show, an owl experience, archery and a nature walk. Archery proved a lot more difficult than it looked – who knew? My husband managed to get a couple of bulls eyes but I struggled to even hit the board, pinging arrow after arrow into the desert sand, despite the gentle ministrations of the patient instructor. The bird shows proved a lot more interesting to me. We were introduced first of all to a native desert eagle owl, which happily

perched on one’s arm providing her trainer, Erin, promised her a treat afterwards. Erin explained that the breed was a specialized hunter that relied on camouflage and stealth, easily able to fly past without making a single sound. However, it was the peregrine falcon that everyone was waiting to see. The trainer and the falcon put on a dazzling display, the bird soaring high into the desert sky and swooping down again and again at the speed of a Ferrari in an attempt to snatch a portion of meat. Officially the fastest animal on the planet, reaching over 322 kilometers an hour during its dives, we were left in awe at the sheer majesty of this masterful hunter, which has such a special place in the history of the region.

DINING Dining options include Safran, the resort’s signature Thai restaurant with a delightful outdoor terrace, Al Waha, an international restaurant with a fusion of influences (though plenty of Arabic staples such as hummus and fattoush), and dining under the stars at a traditional buffet and barbeque. Our personal favorite was Safran, due to its friendly, attentive staff and a lip smackingly good Tom Yum Goong (spicy prawn and lemongrass soup). We also loved the roof terrace Moon Bar and its romantic open air fire pits.

GETTING THERE Qatar Airways and Air Arabia fly direct Doha to Ras Al Khaimah, with a flight time of one hour, 10 minutes. Expect to pay about QR400 to QR600 for a return economy ticket. However, flight schedules are limited and it can work out as more convenient to fly to Dubai or Sharjah, and then taxi to Ras Al Khaimah (a 45 to 60 minute trip). We flew Qatar Airways economy from Doha to Dubai on the forward journey, then Sharjah to Doha return, for QR400 per person. Qatar Airways is expected to launch more direct flights to Ras Al Khaimah in February.

There are plenty more options both on site and nearby, including camel and horse riding, a star gazing night walk, sand boarding, quad biking and a desert safari. Even just exploring the grounds can prove eventful – we came across a herd of oryx resting near a water course (apparently there are gazelle too, though we didn’t spot them), and admired the view across the sands from one of several traditional style watch towers. MINI BREAK DESTINATION The end of a two-night stay came far too quickly, but it had been just the tonic we were in need of. After reluctantly getting out of our private pool for the last time and taking the golf buggy to the lavish reception rooms for check out, we mentally placed the resort on our sanity break check list. Endless desert skies, peaceful surrounds, fabulous villas, fun activities and luxury spa treatments…. What’s not to like?

Accommodation at Banyan Tree Al Wadi starts from QR 1,900 per night for an Al Rimal Deluxe Pool Villa, inclusive of buffet breakfast, soft drinks from the mini bar, interactive owl experience, afternoon falconry show, archery and a nature walk. Each villa sleeps 2 adults and 2 children under the age of 12. Interconnecting pool villas accommodating 4 adults and 4 children start from QR 4,220, including extra activities and a 60 minute spa treatment per villa per stay. Jazz to me is all about

the Swing, Blues, and Improvisation. You can have that in many different facets of your life, not just music. For instance: when you cook a meal you can improvise with different spices you may like. You also put a certain feeling into your food when you're cooking it too. This is the Blues. All blues aren’t sad so you can have a happy blues and a happy meal. ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN INTRODUCED TO QATAR

“Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.”

R

olls-Royce Dawn, the new benchmark in open-top luxury motoring made an exclusive appearance in Qatar last month, ahead of its public reveal in the capital at the Qatar Motor Show 2016.

Compromise is not a word recognized in the Rolls-Royce lexicon. Indeed the company continues to live by the clarion cry of co-founder Sir Henry Royce to “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” The final part of that maxim – “Accept nothing nearly right or good enough” has guided the Rolls-Royce design and engineering teams as they have worked to initiate a new age for open-top, super-

94

luxury motoring. In a sector exclusively populated by the biggest of automotive compromises – the 2+2 seat configuration – Rolls-Royce accepted no compromise. And so, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, the world’s only true modern four-seater super-luxury drop head, is born. The new Rolls-Royce Dawn stands apart from its stable mates, featuring 80% unique body panels. Indeed such attention has been paid to ensuring this amazing new dawn for superluxury motoring delivers on its promise, even the tyres that connect the new RollsRoyce Dawn to the road are new. The Silent Ballet Specific engineering and manufacturing attention has been paid to the creation of

the Dawn’s roof. Unheard of anywhere in the modern motor industry until now, the roof of the Rolls-Royce Dawn delivers the silence of a Wraith when up and operates in almost complete silence in just over 20 seconds at a cruising speed of up to 50kph. Working with a fabric roof configuration, the Rolls-Royce engineering team set themselves a challenging goal which they were unwilling to compromise on – to make the quietest convertible car in the world today. This quest for silence applied to all aspects of the engineering of the new roof and by extension the new motor car. Firstly, the passengers’ on-board aural experience roof up and roof down while in motion had to be pure Rolls-Royce. The design of the roof had to be graceful,

beautiful and sensuous whilst remaining one of the largest canopies to grace a convertible car. Indeed, the Dawn’s roof is the second largest fabric roof applied to a current production car, second only to that of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drop head Coupe. The silent lowering of the soft top – dubbed “The Silent Ballet” by Rolls-Royce engineers – transforms the Rolls-Royce Dawn, delivering a true Dawn moment. In hero specification of Midnight Sapphire exterior and Mandarin leather interior, night becomes day as rays of sunshine burst forth, bringing the inside out, joining this social space with the wider world of possibilities. It is safe to say that the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is the quietest open-top car ever made. A whole new car Contrary to media speculation, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is not a Wraith drop

head. 80% of the exterior body panels of the new Dawn are newly designed to accommodate an evolution of Rolls-Royce’s design language and to encapsulate highly contemporary, fourseat super-luxury drop head architecture. The aim was clear. To do what no other car manufacturer had achieved so far – make a car that looks as beautiful with its roof up as with it down. One could almost say that the result of the design team’s restless endeavours has been to make the new Rolls-Royce Dawn two cars in one.

cabin akin to the collar of a jacket pulled up to protect the neck. The deck itself is an amazing work of modern craftsmanship. Clothed in openpore Canadel panelling that traces the horse-shoe shape of the rear cabin, it demonstrates the great advances that the craftspeople in the Woodshop at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood have made in wood crafting technology and techniques.

The wood on the deck, chosen by the customer to suit their individual taste, flows down the ‘Waterfall’ between the rear seats, and around the cabin clothing Roof down, the sexiness of the RollsRoyce Dawn is even more apparent. From the interior door panels and enticing the the side the steep rake of the windscreen, owner to enter Dawn. the swage line that flows over the rear haunches plus the high beltline that rises along the profile give the impression of Deliveries on the new effortless swiftness. The very same rising Rolls-Royce Dawn commence in the beltline wraps around the rear passenger second quarter of 2016.
