We also introduce you to renowned Peruvian artist Ana Maria Garcia Montero, whose spectacular photography captures the elegant Peruvian Paso, known as the horse with the smoothest gait in the world.
Test shoot stand in
ABODE takes a special trip to the Kempinski Grand and Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre to see how business hospitality merges with entertainment. We also travel to Beijing where we explore the historical marvels blended with the modern. And, while in Qatar, do not miss the chance to stop by and check out the Porsche Carrera S, the latest edition of the famous 911, which is known in many circles as the greatest car of all time. We hope you enjoy our issue as we hope to inspire you to live well, travel and experience life. The summer sun is harsh, remember to hydrate.

his month's cover personality is Aisha Fonte, who works as Head of VIP and Visitor Relations at the prestigious Aspire Zone Foundation. We choose Aisha as she is on the top of her game, both in her career and physical fitness. Her confident personality and positive attitude is both energetic and infectious. We were amazed that despite leading a hectic work life she has time to follow her passions and follow her fitness mantra. When asked to her to tell us how she keeps herself in such good shape and what are her favourite sports, she said “Sports have always been an important part of my life. My mother was a ballet dancer and she was known to be one of the best dancers in Barcelona. However, she had a punishing schedule for us as kids. Thanks to her mother Aisha learnt to swim every day, was a keen gymnast, an accomplished flamenco dancer and cannot live without going to the gym at least twice per week. It shows! Aisha is a global citizen with an interesting and incredible background and therefore a perfect fit for our cover. She was born in Chelsea, United Kingdom, raised in Ben Gazi, Libya finished her schooling in Barcelona, Spain. She has worked in Berlin, London, Brussels and now in Doha. She also speaks five languages and has worked in variety of roles throughout her career, she also owned a Flamenco school for 11 years, and now aspires to start her own fashion label in the future.

It’s true, 24 hours are probably not enough to do all that she wants, yet she agreed graciously to be a part of ABODE June’s fashion feature to show us how to look refreshingly cool in Suite Blanco designer casual wear. Describing her experience in Doha, she says that sometimes she feels that living here is like living inside a luxurious fashion magazine. “I see Qatar to be the most fashionable city in the world in the future.” Her own style sense comes from asking herself everyday how she wants to look. “When it comes to style, you can create a wardrobe where you don’t repeat an outfit. Each woman has her own style. In fact, all women have this fashion gene in them. All they need to do is to inspect carefully what they have.” She regards Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser as an inspirational icon who has defined the way women are perceived in the Middle East. “The way she represents herself in the Western and the Arab world is truly amazing. In Doha and GCC, it’s exciting to see that women to follow her example.” Having worked here for the last five years, Aisha added that the women here, Qatari and expats allike are as fashion conscious as they are into their careers.

Elaborating about her current role at the Aspire Zone Foundation, as the Head of VIP and Visitor Relations Aisha said that it is her responsibility to organise and managing the visits of important dignitaries and sport icons who visit Qatar. This means she has had the privilege of meeting famous icons like Sir Alex Vergeson Manchester Uni. Manager and Barcelona football team, Canavaro and the likes. When it comes to Qatari sports icons, she is quick to point out that Nasser al Attiyah and Nada Zedan are both local important personalities who have undoubtedly left an important mark on the sports’ landscape in Qatar. You can always identify strong women not just by her own initiatives but also by her actions to empower others. Aisha is no different. Though she harbours a dream of opening her own fashion label in the future, she is equally inspired to help other women with discovering their own strengths. “Every day for me is a new experience. The dream of my life is to have my own fashion label and to help people look and feel their best.” Her partner in this future venture is stylist Ghaza Al Faisel, who served as the stylist in ABODE’s fashion shoot. It is impossible not to be walk away from a conversation with Aisha without feeling energetic and passionate, and we hope her dream comes true soon. •

how to choose the right
SUNglasses The right pair of sunglasses will balance your face and compliment its natural shape.
Square face Sharp features and square lines call for a break in the angularity of your features and demand round or oval, soft- lined glasses. Your best bet is larger, rounded glasses. Jackie O’s and other rounded bug-eye glasses are especially good for this and the triangle shaped face. More modern styles call for drawing attention away from the jaw line in an attempt to make your shape look more triangular. This can be achieved by putting more weight on the top half with larger glasses. If you insist on smaller frames, choose horizontal oval styles in simple browns and blacks.
Attiarance Black Louis Vuitton {QR 2,530}
34
Sunglasses in leather and metal frames Louis Vuitton {Price upon Request}
Round face If your features are predominantly rounded, ielarger forehead, curved jaw line and rounded chin and cheeks, the best eyeglasses shape for your face would be something that breaks up the softness and creates contrast. Go for square or rectangle frames and do not shy away from absurd colors and designs. The round face best suits creativity and variety, though avoid round and oval frames at all costs.
Flore Oversize Louis Vuitton {QR 1,820}
Fashion
Heart shaped face This is the classic shape, and especially supports larger square frames or bizarre shaped frames like star or heart cut-outs. The cuteness of this shape can support most frames, but looks best with light colored, soft-edged square shapes, which act to enhance the cuteness of the outline. Stick to pastels and other light, almost child-like designs.
style
Oval face
Conspiration Louis Vuitton {QR 1,820}
Sunglasses Louis Vuitton {Price upon Request }
If your features are oval, ie- longer than round but proportionately sophisticated, your shape is best suited to rounded or angled glasses that extenuate your cheekbones and draw attention to your eyes and other horizontal features like your lips and eyebrows. Oval features are, of course, the easiest to fit to glasses, and can handle most shapes and colors. Consider trying horn-rimmed glasses, or modern derivatives of the horn-rimmed style, which will dray attention to the sharp contours of your features for a more glamorous, 1920's Hollywood look.
Orange Sunglasses Louis Vuitton {QR 2,250}
35
Fashion
style
Triangle face This shape is all the rage in Hollywood in 2008, as Mary Kate and Ashley have demonstrated. If you are lucky enough to have this shape, follow the same advice for square shapes, trying to make the chin look even more pointed and frail and almost doll-like by wearing large round glasses and sunglasses, especially Jackie O’s and bright, bold colors that instantly draw attention upwards.
Conspiration Ovale Louis Vuitton {QR 2,120}
36
Rectangle face Audace Red Louis Vuitton {QR 1,540}
If you have a longer, but more chiseled rectangle shaped face, try to avoid rectangle frames. Instead, lean towards larger round frames that will make the shape of your face appear softer and more squared and proportionate. Men, especially, can enhance their chiseled look with Aviators or other, similarly rounded frames.

Ask A Designer: 10 FUN
Updates To Make This Year by Lisa Canning
In this economy, the trend is for “use what you have” decorating, so reusing and recycling are the big buzz words to take a hint from. Here are a few suggestions from other designers to help you keep your home décor fresh and updated without breaking the bank.
1
Do up-cycle. “2012 is about re-using, recycling and up-cycling,” says Yanic.
2
Do use layers upon layers. “Spaces that look like they have evolved over decades vs. styled and contrived in the moment are very 2012,” says Meredith.
3
Do use vintage chairs. “Get rid of your faux leather brown Parsons dining chair and think about introducing vintage or mid-century second hand dining chairs,” says Yanic Simard, Principal Designer of Toronto Interior Design Group.
4
Do redefine value. “Value doesn’t mean quantity. It means buying things for the home that you enjoy looking at and using,” say Juli and John.
46
5
Do set your own course. Be individual and curate your home with inspired patience.
home
décor
Do declutter with style. “But be sure to keep everything accessible with decorative hooks, stylish storage boxes, intricate jewellery trees and countertop organizers,” says Sebastien.
6
8
Do use
coloured lampshades. Swap
the classic white drum for a custom shade in an unexpected colour. Use neon or saturated colour to add a fashion pop.
7
Do spend

what to do... 1. Update: After 14 years of living in their semi-detached house, this young couple decided it is time to "step it up" in their home’s interiors. Now is the moment to update their entrance and Majlis look, while retaining the house’s traditional character. 2. use what you have: “Utilizing the existing accessories and living room set, I worked with the colour scheme of golds, browns and light creams to create a little magic by using a metallic twist to the paint finish.” On the wall, she chose to use French-style frames with champagne antique finish. “This two-tone paint on the wall gives it some kind of movement without it being busy.” 3. add a few pieces: Two additional armchairs upholstered in brown with gold fabric will provide extra seating and add glamour to the room. The three coffee tables colour was changed from dark brown to champagne with antique finish to blend with the surroundings. 4. Update your ligthing: Good lighting plays a very important role in an interior setting. To achieve this, we selected an elegant chandelier with a rustic look. It has six bulbs to provide an adequate amount of illumination to the room.

Anything floral is a great way to start off this fabulous season, so why not go all out and purchase a statement-making floral sofa? If you haven’t got the guts, pick up some oversized pillows in exotic floral patterns for an instant spring welcoming.
IDEA Avoid mixing tiny prints with oversized fabrics to maintain a consistent and balanced look!

It really makes a great way to start off spring! Balance is key when approaching this colourful trend, so choose your wall colour and accessories wisely. Pick two or three similar hues from your floral print and use it for area rugs, curtains, and bedding. Your main objective should be to draw as little attention away from your floral statement piece. Don’t let accessories steal the show! If you plan on mixing floral patterns, make sure they are within the same scale and color palette.

DIY Floral Fabric Pots Give plain terracotta pots a spin with this easy DIY project you can finish up this weekend. Just about anyone can do this project, even those that aren’t so craft savvy. A little glue and fabric can really go a long way! Materials: » Terracotta pots » Mod Podge » Brush » Floral Fabric. Instructions:
» Cut a length of fabric that will wrap once around your pot. Leave extra room for folding it over the top and bottom. Cut slits in your fabric around the top to avoid puckering. » Coat a section of the pot with Mod Podge and stick the beginning of your fabric to the pot, coating the fabric as well. Do this all the way around and trim the fabric less than an inch so it hangs over the top and bottom. » Fold the fabric at the top and bottom in pleats and coat it with Mod Podge. Let it dry and… voila!
BDB Tip: For indoor use only! If these get wet the glue will most likely wash off!

Decorating
For Your Pet By Moona Masri-whitice
As an avid pet owner, I find that decorating and remodeling living spaces with pets’ needs in mind is quite important. The key is choosing the right materials and being sure to accommodate the animals’ needs. Here are a few pet-friendly decorating tips when considering your four legged companions.
Fabrics:
Food Storage Ideas:
s around • One possibility is to allocate area bowls. the kitchen island for water and food and leashes. • Drawers can be used for treats • Roll out garbage bins can be used bulk food.

to hold
Multiple Pet Feeding: Getting the dog not to eat out of the cat’s dish can be a challenge! Here is a creative solution which involves re purposing furniture. Take an old secretary; remove the hatched door, the bottom drawers and a shelf inside, cut out three holes large enough to set stainless dog dishes in; one hole on the top shelf for cats, two holes on the bottom shelf (one for dog food and the other for a shared water bowl).
• Ultra-suede is a great forgiving fabric that can be made into stylish slip covers and is an easy-to-maintain alternative. “Its beautiful, and it always stays cool and comfortable no matter the climate which is important for animal comfort. • Crypton, a nearly indestructible, synthetic fabric that’s resistant to stains, smells, and bacteria and muddy paws. • Leather is also a good choice, easy to clean and durable.
home
interiors
Bedding: Buy pet bedding made of Matelasse’ fabrics as it is both durable and decorative; the tight quilting resists pet paw prints and claw snags and repeated washings. Make sure your pet has a landing pad (pillow, box, cushion) in every room of the house where they are allowed to sleep or sit. This will make them feel welcomed and loved.
Flooring CHOICE:
Cat Friendly Upholstery: • Use slip covers made of acyclic outdoor fabric. It’s soft to the touch, but this cloth is so tightly woven that cats can’t get their claws in it. • Find a carpet remnant and cut it into a 15” x 4” rectangle. Make a hole at the top and hang it from a door knob for a scratching post. • Door mats made of coir, fiber from coconut husks, to attract cats.
• Bare floors are the best solution for keeping the house clean. Painted concrete is lovely and durable, as are terrazzo and brick. Hardwood floors are simple to mop or vacuum and add a warm glow to a room. • The best floor is ceramic tile, because it’s easy to clean and resistant to pet stains. Tile is resistant to dog nail tracks, it makes a room look sleek and elegant, and it gives furry animals a cool place to nap during hot weather. • Choose area rugs and instead of wall to wall carpeting. You can always dry clean an area rug or shampoo out stains.
have fun with COLOUR: • Your pet can be a source of inspiration when choosing paint and accessory colours for your room. • Paint a concrete floor the same shade of gray as your cat. • Cover your sofa in a honey microfiber that matches your dog’s coat. This is a practical choice because the hair they leave behind won’t be as visible.

The “21st Century Palace” client wanted a contemporary ambiance with high drama. The designer combined soothing whites, off-whites with wenge exotic tropical wood and white lacquered wood cabinetry, resulting in an ambiance that flows throughout the home. A sense of high drama is definitely achieved as one arrives at a raised grand foyer at the center of the great room. One is captivated by the soaring 24foot coffered ceilings supported with floor-to-ceiling contemporary columns finished in glossy white.
Nine of the palaces featured in Palaces showcase Perla Lichi’s signature neo-classical style. Note the rich detailing, for example, in the Summer Palace master bedroom.

n 1910 Industrial businessman and naturist, James Deering purchased 180 acres of wild subtropical land and commissioned designer Paul Chalfin, architect F. Burrall Hoffman and landscape architect Diego Suarez to build the estate as his winter home. favoured, and although engineered to have all the vanguard modern conveniences of the early 20th century—including central heating, an automatic electric telephone switchboard, two elevators, and the first refrigerator of its time—Deering wanted the estate’s appearance to be that of a centuries old Baroque villa. He christened the residence after the northern province of Vizcaya, located in
the Basque region of Spain. While the main structure only took two years to build, Suarez did not complete the formal gardens until 1922, due to the outbreak of World War I. The two-story home has the Biscayne Bay as its backdrop and its 34 main rooms contain Deering’s vast collection of 16th19th-century European art—including antique furnishings, lighting fixtures, doors and fireplaces purchased by the family on shopping expeditions throughout Europe.

The Banquet Hall
The Estate Upon arrival a massive marble statue of the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, stands over a 2nd century marble basin that welcomes guests entering the main loggia. The design of this section of the home ranges from Neoclassical to Rococo with hand coloured wallpaper panels made in 1814 in the Parisian workshop of Joseph Dufour. The ceremonial 2,000year old Roman marble tripod, and the Hispano-Moresque rug depicting Hercules slaying the Nemean Lion—one of the few remaining 15th-century Spanish heraldic carpets in the world—once owned by the grandfather of King Ferdinand of Spain gallantly sits in the largest room in the home, the living room. In the Rococo decorated music room you will find a harpsichord signed and dated, 1619, by its maker Giovanni Battista Boni of Cortona, Italy. Displayed in the dining room are tapestries that once belonged to English poet Robert Browning. A reoccurring theme that appears in a variety of forms throughout the home, and considered symbols of Vizcaya, are the caravel (voyage ships used by explorers) and the seahorse. Historical and fanciful names along with different design periods were used to incorporate the décor of the second floor guest rooms. The Pantaloon room named after characters of the Commedia
Music Room
dell’Arte incorporates Venetian influences. The Manin room, named after the AustroHungarian politician, Ludovico Manin, is decorated in the simple Biedermeier style. Antique silks and 19th-century oil paintings cover the walls of the Belgioioso room named in honour of the beautiful Countess of Belgioioso. The Lady Hamilton room, with its Neoclassical design, is named after prominent ancient art collector and wife of the English ambassador to Naples. The Cathay room, the medieval anglicized name for China, incorporates Chinoiserie—a reinterpretation of Chinese themes in European art made popular in the 17th-century that had resurgence in the early 20th-century. The Espagnolette, an opulent room with Rococo décor, refers
to the French taste for Spanish fashion in the 1700s. The Galleon, Caraval, Goyesca (named after Spanish painter Francisco de Goya) and the Giudecca rooms all with French, Spanish and Italian Neoclassical influences allowed Deering’s guest to indulge in European luxury while looking out onto tropical frondescence to the west and a sun-swept bay to the east. Sadly, Deering only lived in his beloved home nine years; he passed away in 1925, leaving the estate to two nieces, who by 1952 had sold part of it off. The 50 acres that were left, including the villa and gardens, were sold to Miami Dade County under the condition that the estate would be kept as a museum in perpetuity. Today,

Vizcaya plays lady host to countless galas; she is the setting for many a Hollywood movie; is an ideal place for blushing brides to celebrate nuptials, but most importantly is a key destination for the worldly tourist to take in the beauty of the estate and gardens, appreciating the dream home of an art connoisseur and early conservationist of South Florida’s native eco-region. The Gardens While the design of the gardens is based on French and Italian principals, native plants such as Live Oak, Jasmine, Philodendron and Palms were incorporated into the layout. The main garden features Italian inspired architecture with fountain basins, ornamental urns and obelisks carved from Cuban limestone and Florida Coral. Semi circular lily pools and ornate vine-clad gazebos adorn the landscape; the walkways are beset with Italian sculptures depicting Greek and Roman mythical characters. The Fountain Garden, originally named the Rose Garden leads to the Maze—a familiar feature in European Renaissance gardens providing a delightful diversion for guests. Traveling past the lily pool, and through the small vine-covered gazebo, visitors come upon the Secret Garden, a place to rest and meditate. An arched doorway leads guests to the bay front where the commanding Stone Barge, a breakwater for small boats, stands erect with sculptures by A. Stirling Calder outlining its borders; a place that held many a roaring dinner party, al fresco, during Deering’s time. •

By Laura Prior Photography Jessie Palanca
For small countries surrounded by larger neighbours, partnership and understanding is everything in today’s globalized world. ABODE hears all about the common, forward-thinking bond between two such countries—Qatar and Singapore— from the gentleman in charge of steering the ship: Charge d’Affaires and Head of Mission Syed Noureddin. We sit comfortably as he rationalizes the glue that holds it all together in an admirably personable fashion.
J
ust 7 months into his time here as Head of Mission to Singapore Mr. Noureddin speaks candidly of his transition into a career of diplomacy; one that has continually sewn a common, energizing thread though his life – people! He also unveils the similar values and aspirations of his home country and his parallel home for now, Qatar. ABODE: What drew you to diplomacy? SN: Actually, I was in real estate before! When I applied to join the Service – they asked me ‘’Why? You are in real estate.’’ I answered, ‘’Well, at the end of the day it’s about people. You are still trying to work together towards one common goal.’’ This prospect of meeting new people and travelling the world doing so was what truly drew me to it. ABODE: A few months in, what is your impression of life in Qatar? SN: Qatar is a very progressive nation and I am excited to be here at this time. There is always so much going on. I am very interested in the history and geopolitics of the region and am reading up on it whenever I get some free time, too. ABODE: There seems to be some healthy commonalities between Qatar and Singapore. Why so?
SN: We have had to be innovative in the way we have developed as nations. We are both small countries with large neighbours and our governments seem to take a straight down the line approach to things. Like Qatar, in Singapore the government is very good at human development and we have considered what human potential can add to our societies whilst embracing the march of progress. Our relationship has been very open but that said, even though it is healthy now, like any good relationship we have to keep working on it. We can always refine, improve and build upon what we have for the common betterment. ABODE: What are some of the ways you are promoting your country here in Qatar? SN: Right now on the table we are focusing on environment, culture and infocomms but there are many opportunities here, especially with the World Cup coming up in 2022. Our strengths lie in the more niche areas such as IT, telecoms and waste and water management. In Singapore we are quite close to self-sufficiency in water, for example, which we can perhaps help Qatar with going forward. Currently we only have about 500 nationals working in Qatar but we are keen to expand on that.
ABODE: How would you describe your personality? Do you rule with your heart or your head? SN: I can be easygoing but I can also be intense. I have mellowed over the years. If I had to split it, I would say 60% heart, 40% head. The heart part is all about trying to relate to people and appeal to them. You reach some sort of resolve to be persuasive and find a balance, trying not to turn people off. Once you’ve turned someone off, it’s hard to win their confidence back! It’s like that in the Foreign Service. In a way you have to be a bit of an all-rounder. You have to be versatile, often finding yourself in many different situations. ABODE: What do you think is our greatest strength is in today’s age? SN: I would say the human intellect. This is a very powerful asset that we can be thankful for, today. To have a rationale and ability to resolve things is a great strength. I always maintain it’s better to talk things out first than to take action. Hopefully that rational thinking will prevail and we won’t do something we regret later. Humans are so adaptable and somehow we are able to make the impossible, possible. •

Reinventing Your Life in Doha: The Victoria Scott Story by Christina Maria Paschyn Photography Jessie Palanca
When I introduced myself to Victoria Scott in December last year, I had butterflies in my stomach. New to Qatar and just beginning to dip my toes into the country’s freelance writing scene, I was worried she might think I was wasting her time.
Victoria Scott and her son
Y
ou see Victoria Scott is a name familiar to many expats in Doha. Her byline has appeared in countless issues of ABODE magazine, Qatar Happening and other publications. She is also the

host of the popular show “Meet the Philharmonic,” which airs daily on Qatar Foundation Radio; and let’s not forget she was once a broadcast producer for Al Jazeera English and the BBC. Who was I to demand time out of this seasoned journalist’s busy schedule? Surely she
would find my questions about expat life and reporting challenges in Doha too naïve and embarrassing to answer. So when the poised 33 year old walked into Caribou Coffee that day to meet with me, I was feeling less than confident. But as her interview subjects can attest, Scott
ABODE
has the ability to make someone feel that they are the most interesting person in the room. Moreover, much to my relief, she was more than eager to share her refreshingly honest and useful advice on starting a new life and career in Doha. But really, who better to offer such guidance? For when Scott arrived in Qatar in 2009, her plan wasn’t just to adapt to her new surroundings. She was determined to reinvent herself.
“Initially it was, ‘Oh, nice day out for you, Tory; you can just do a bit of coverage, see the new terminal and come home.’ But as we know now, it was a complete disaster and the baggage system broke, the toilets overflowed and staff couldn’t get into the car park,” she recounted. “I was doing things for every BBC outlet that they found. It was the only time I was the source of breaking news; it was a huge story and it was basically mine.” She says her success at the BBC can be partially attributed to her husband, Teil.
Scott, or Tory to friends, gave up a lot to move to Doha, such as her accomplished reporting career in London. After graduating in 2001 from City University London with a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism, Scott quickly established herself as a diligent journalist. She worked for a year as a radio presenter for Reuters and was then picked up by the BBC where she began honing her impressive interviewing skills on her first day on the job.
“While I was at the BBC News website, I met a man who turned out to be the love of my life and who it turned out was actually training to be an airline pilot. I learned an awful lot about aviation along the way, and it was fascinating,” Scott said. “It had always been an interest of mine, and whenever there was a story I would pick up the copy that had been written and I would be in there correcting it. It’s actually one of those areas where journalists make the most glaring, awful errors. I would sort of go through and sub things, and I got a name for it.”
“My first day was the London bombings on July 7th [2005] and I hadn’t had any training yet on how to do anything…I never felt so useless for such an enormous story,” Scott recalled. “But I did discover the joy of meeting the guests; in fact, it was one of the things I loved, and at that time I met paramedics who pulled people out of the wreckage and survivors who came in to talk with us. For me the wonderful thing about it was to meet all the people who were involved in these amazing stories.” Scott would stay at the BBC for eight years and she tried her hand at nearly every task, from editing video clips for the web and writing the scrolling ticker to anchoring nightly news streams. She got her big break when she was assigned to cover the opening of Heathrow Terminal 5.
But later, in a bittersweet turn of events, Scott landed her dream job as the BBC’s transport producer just as her husband’s own career in transportation nose-dived. “My husband’s airline [XL.com] went bust. It was just so ironic. My husband lost his job and there I was getting the job I always wanted…I got [to do reporting] that I was really passionate about,” she said. Working alongside Transport Correspondent Tom Symonds, Scott covered a variety of stories from railways accidents to laser attacks on pilots. Nevertheless, when Qatar Airways offered her husband a position in Doha as a first officer with the airline, she didn’t hesitate to pack her bags. “I loved my job but I loved my husband more. I knew that he had to come here because it was a great opportunity for him. And we couldn’t function as a couple if we lived on different continents. Beyond that it was going to be an adventure,” Scott said. Within months of arriving, she ended up landing a gig as a freelance output producer for AJE.
people
Scott’s life may be one replete with adventure, but it is one also complicated by the unique challenges that a wife of a pilot often encounters. The birth of her now two-year-old son Raphael brought much joy to Scott and her husband, albeit more stress to their lives as well. “It’s a real challenge juggling the demands of motherhood and the demands of being the wife of a guy who is away three-quarters of the time. When he’s home, he’s often asleep or trying to rest. It’s a difficult, demanding career for him, and I feel like I’m married to the airline as well,” she explained. To better manage their lives, Scott decided to place her broadcast journalism career and its 24/7 demands on hold. But that doesn’t mean this ambitious woman has been content to sit at home; indeed, she realized early on she needed to reinvent her career and freelance writing proved a perfect new trajectory. “Getting back a freelance career, which actually is the perfect thing because it fits around my husband and my son, has been a revelation,” she said. “Although it’s not the sort of high-powered stuff I used to do, it has its considerable charms. I meet really interesting people, I get to go to amazing events, and I get to do lots of different things, which I’m enjoying because I get bored easily.” Today Scott says she feels professionally fulfilled, but she remains committed to advancing her career and even expanding her comfort zone. Her motto is to do something every day that frightens her so that she is always raising her potential. She hopes her story will prove inspirational to trailing spouses in Qatar who may be unsure of their career prospects. “I was quite nervous at the beginning to put myself out there, but people want to talk to you and they want to know what skills you have and what you can bring to this country,” she said. “There are lots of opportunities here, and I think if you just go out and ask you’d be surprised at what answers you get.” • » Read Victoria Scott’s reporting at her website, http://toryscott.wordpress.com/. Mr. Dipak Paul
Family Ties
By Laura Prior Photography Jessie Palanca
Like something out of a story book, the now General Manager of Doha’s newest business address, Concorde Hotel Doha, came from very humble beginnings to where he is today. As a wide-eyed boy, Mr Dipak Paul sat in his small, city cinema in India and watched the lead character command a hotel. The character wore a tie to work. From that moment on, the tie symbolized everything Mr Paul aspired to and now stands for. ABODE was captivated by the story of this grounded and philosophical GM. ABODE: You have always dreamed of being an hotelier, tell us about that. DP: When I was a boy I watched a movie about a manager of hotel. He wore a tie to work. This symbolized everything I wanted to be – smart, well turned out, a leader. This was not a normal career choice for families like mine though, and my mother and father were sceptical at first, but I was adamant it was for me.
I WOULD wear a tie to work each day! So, I studied a degree in hospitality and worked my way up from being a waiter. 37 years later and I’ve never looked back. ABODE: Concorde Hotel is in its soft opening phase, congratulations! How has the journey been so far and what are your hopes for the future? DP: I have to thank every person
that has supported us in bringing this project to light. I came to Doha with a dream to fill a much needed gap in the business hospitality market and was supported 110%. This has been refreshing and empowering. We hope to set an excellent standard in business hospitality through service, cleanliness, attention to detail and efficiency. We want business travellers to come to

Concorde again and again, not only to experience our hospitality, but [to] have had experienced Qatar and its culture. ABODE: That’s an interesting point because Qatar is such a multicultural and diverse place to visit, so as a business hotel, how do you get Qatar’s local identity across? DP: It is a challenge to convey Qatar’s hospitality culture because the hotel experience is something completely different to the local, traditional aspects of Qatari culture but we encourage our guests to get out there and see the country and enjoy what it has to offer, even if they are just staying for a couple of days. I also support the Qatarisation process in our industry, as this will add authenticity to the guest experience and create a local hospitality culture within the hotel environment. As it stands
though, we embrace all diversity and the value that brings to everyday learning and human interaction to your staff and guests. Every day is a lesson. ABODE: What defines a great hotelier? DP: You have to be naturally hospitable. In India we are innately so. For example if we have a guest in our home we will not allow them to cook for at least one week when they arrive. We take them in with care and love and this is the fundamental which I strongly believe and practice in family and work life. ABODE: You seem very focused and dedicated. Would you consider yourself a workaholic?

Ana Maria Garcia Montero
I
nviting an artist out to review their own work leads to the most interesting conversations and unexpected answers. I discovered this while interviewing Peruvian photographer Ana Maria Garcia Montero, photographer extraordinaire who had flown in from Peru armed with her work on the Peruvian Paso Horse. When I pointed at a particular photograph, Ana called the picture a surprise, almost like a revelation she wasn’t expecting. Explaining the picture she said, It’s all about unique moments that will not come again and you just have to be there. As it turns out, Ana has found herself in many ‘moments’ like these. Ana said, “I don’t know sometimes I just get lucky!” this from a lady whose photograph “Efímero Susto,” (taken in Isla Grande-Ancón from the photographic exhibition “VOCES del MAR”) was nominated by National Geographic in March 2010. We were speaking during her exhibition Andares: Peruvian Paso Horse, which was displayed at the Qatar Photographic Society Exhibition Hall in Katara, The Cultural
ABODE meets renowned Peruvian artist Ana Maria Garcia Montero, whose spectacular photography captures the elegant Peruvian Paso Horse, an internationally recognized symbol of Peru’s national cultural heritage.
Village, May 1 to 19. It was held under the patronage of the Embassy of the Republic of Peru in Qatar and sponsored by IBQ. Commenting on the event, ambassador of the Republic of Peru to Qatar, His Excellency Mr Julio Florian said, “I believe that through organizing such cultural events we can build bridges between countries that are geographically far (Qatar and Peru), but in reality are very close since these horses have Arab origins.” It took Ana two years, hundreds of photographs and a lot of travel during the time to finish the entire collection. Forty-eight images from those hundreds were chosen to be shown in Qatar at this exhibition, along with the traditional riding gear created by saddlers, carpenters, braiders, engravers, silversmiths and pellón (saddle blanket) makers. Ana Maria Garcia says she was drawn to these horses because “they are beautiful animals, firm and loyal and they have a great relationship with their caretakers, and they are not just about showbiz.” She added that their proud and elegant, in
fact arrogant stance was just a few of the cardinal characteristics that drew her to them. But capturing the horses in a candid moment did present a tricky problem, which is why Ana ensured that she photographed them when they were in the company of their caretakers. “I never went alone to photograph these horses. I would normally ask for someone who takes care of the horse to be present and when the horse and the caretaker trust me, I start taking pictures.” A beautiful opportunity presented itself when she was able to capture the image of a lady who dances with her horse, Mystico, by the beachside. Ana Maria Garcia, born in Peru, has always had the passion to promote and preserve the Peruvian culture. In her own, she is a photographer, period. Ana emphasized that she wanted her photographs to present a positive image. “My point of view has to say something positive. If I have to tell you something, then I want you to be strong, happy, just like these horses in the photos. If it doesn’t say something, then my photo has failed.” •

For Women Only:
Investing Gets Extreme…
! r e v o e k Ma
By MibX in association with High Heeled Traders
Are you good in budgeting and saving? How about making money grow? Women are good money managers but not a lot is said about us being good investors.
W
omen should invest - have money work for them right here right now. We tend to miss out on “paid work” to raise children, financial security no matter what happens to our marriages, and generally having indulgent expenses (treats, holidays, makeup, clothes, bling and shoes). But what is it really? The idea is to have more than what we start with. So we all want to actively invest, which is called trading by the way. The problem is, it’s not as easy as it sounds. There is a ton of material out there, which more often than not confuses and discourages women who want to step up. Recognizing this, Charmel Delos Santos, an IT professional, investor and mother of three from Australia, wrote a book on investing for women called “High Heeled Traders”. It is written with humor and storytelling style and encompasses more than ten years of her experiences, lessons and triumphs in learning to invest in the stock market. With this book, she gives investing an extreme makeover explaining investing concepts with girlie analogies in shopping,
76
fashion, and shoes. This unique approach got women around the world, in different cultures, intrigued, wanting to find out more, while totally understanding the concepts she talks about (shopping seems to be a universal language among women.) In Doha, a lady named Marzena Hallam from MibX, fascinated by the Qatari National Vision 2030 and inspired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah’s mission to empower women established the Women Investing in Stock market Programme in association with Thomson Reuters and Bedaya Center– a world-first -- and have invited Charmel to mentor the eager group of women stepping up to the challenge. This puts women in Qatar the enviable position of leading women empowerment in investing where 90% of participants are men. In case you are wondering if you have what it takes, Charmel shares why women will be successful in investing with the
skills, attitudes and knowledge we already possess.
1} Women do not like to take big risks and keep losses small. There are always risks in any business. The winning trades are often low-risk, and women are known to be risk-averse, not taking big risks and better at keeping losses small. So this trait serves women well. She says when you lose, just say to yourself, “I could have been shopping!” That lesson should keep the losses to a minimum.

2} Women are natural traders.
4} Women - Are the Mother of All
We have the skills. Do you know of a woman who does NOT do any shopping? It’s a secret. Investing is like shopping. True, shopping is more on the buying part but that’s where money in investing is made. Buying low, selling high - which is basically what trading is about. Trading is just a more active way of investing.
Investors Mothers know when to protect and when to nurture growth. You might have heard about ROI or Return on Investment, but really, “investing” is useless when we don’t get back the money we originally have. So it is important to know how to preserve and protect, starting with avoiding anything high-risk. Mothers instincts put to good use don’t you think? Then of course, the mark of mothers is love and nurturing. As when children and investments are doing well, we let them grow. We watch out for signs or encourage when that growth is continuing and we take action when performance is falling.
In fact, this could be you: a} You search high and low, visiting malls or shops, looking for an item selling below value. You’re a bargain hunter. In investing, this is called value investing. b} You like to buy what is in fashion. Buying Blue? That is so last year! You would only go for new styles. You’re in with the trend. In trading, this is called trend following where things in high demand are priced sky-high. c} You buy when you see a “window of opportunity”, to get the most value at the least cost, in shopping we call this “Sales”– in trading this is called arbitrage.
3}Women can appreciate and execute the complexity of a trading business, much like dressing up to be fashionable or well-puttogether. Women get dressed for work or party – combining many things and have to do so with absolute care and consideration. In her book, Charmel discusses how women can get “Dressed to Trade” – discussing parallels of items used for dressing up to trading. The need for cleanliness, appropriate hair length, foundation and makeup, dress, shoes, accessories, perfume and knowing the tools to use. Trading requires clear mind, understanding of yourself so you know what fits you, your tolerance for risk, your skills, timeframe, position sizing, strategy to use, knowing market type, system components of entry, stop, exit strategies, having confidence etc. Women dress up all the time, women can get dressed to trade.
Admittedly, unless you put time and effort to study investing, it’s hard to be successful. (Well, this is true for all legal ways of earning money!). •
Footnote: The ‘Women Investing in the Stock Market’ programme has been initiated by Marzena Hallam, Founder & CEO of MibX, a firm that seeks to create a favourable environment fostering and facilitating the emerging entrepreneurs to establish and grow small and medium businesses. The programme, a first of many, has been designed for women in Qatar (expats and Qataris) will cover trading techniques (with real time practical examples) that will take away the fear and risk, help to find and place successful trades by being able to ‘read the market’. If the programme interests you contact Marzena on 300-44721 or mhallam@mibx.com.au to find out more.

According to the BCG Global Wealth report, women in the Arab region are poised to control 22 per cent of the region’s investments, growing at eight per cent a year. But when it comes to investment related decisions, women tend to be more detail oriented than their male counter parts. Read more to find out how.
T
oday's women are taking control of their financial future by investingor starting a commercial business they believe in. In the US women now own half of all private wealth, which means they control or influence at least $16 trillion in assets. In addition, about a third of all US households are headed by women. In the Arab region women are estimated to control 22 percent, or about $500 billion, of the region’s investments, growing at eight percent a year, according to a recent BCG Global Wealth report. Given those statistics, one can see why women now represent the greatest potential market, as well as a great recruiting opportunity for the financial services industry. Who are these wealthy women? The majority of these ultra-wealthy women live in the oil-and-gas-rich nations surrounding the Arabian Gulf: countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the UAE where women hold more than US$40 billion in personal wealth. Last year’s GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Federal report showed Saudi women alone held US$15 billion, mostly in cash accounts and trust units, while women in the less populated countries of Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE had amassed a total of US$18 billion.
Change in Generations Wealth in the Gulf countries came into being, for women in particular, about 20 to 25 years ago when women started inheriting cash and real estate from their families. At the time, they were neither well educated nor well informed unlike the men of their generation who taught in financial matters. However, this changed in the next generation of women who now speak openly about money, investment and financial opportunities and the need to secure their financial future. Topics that were once considered immensely private are now discussed freely over coffee. Women are using their newfound inheritance and education to find their own way. They are successful entrepreneurs, hold high positions in government and private companies and are taking over control of the wealth in family companies. Qatar The Qatari government is investing significant resources in training women and supporting their rise in business and recognizing their inputs. The Financial Industry sees the opportunity to attract local and expat women to invest. The Qatar Exchange held a special introductory meeting for Qatari Business Women Association (QBWA) as part of a strategy to unleash the potential of women
lifestyle
in the investment sector. Seeing this international banks have started to add Women Funds to their portfolios as well. Qatar Ladies Investment Company, the first of its kind in the whole region, was established in 1998. It is equally shared by a group of Qatari ladies and Qatar National Bank. Qatar’s first lady Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser AlMisned is looking at women’s contribution to the long-term economic and social development of this nation and creating organizations such as the Qatar Business Women Forum and drafting policies to pave the way for more widespread social acceptance of women’s equality. In November 2000, the Business Women Forum was set up after securing the approval of Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which decided that the forum would serve as one of the Chamber’s committees. By doing so, the Chamber is trying to provide an encouraging social atmosphere for women to play their role in the development process, increase their contribution in small trades and industrial projects and enhance their potential to take economic decisions.
Strategy of investing Conventional wisdom says that men are interested in investment performance, while women are more concerned about security and having enough so as not to become a shopping bag lady when they’re older. A lot of what I read says that women are not as concerned about performance as men and are more concerned about feeling secure. Women tend to be more diligently than men. Men are quicker to make a decision and just trust that it’s going to work. However, women want to know that they made the right decision to begin with. They are also less apt than men to want to make changes in their portfolio at the drop of a hat. A Barclays Wealth survey in the Middle East states that women prefer to make their investments close to home and look for an advisor who can help them make empowered decisions. Women investors typically study the product more thoroughly before investing; and go into details of the product and seek clarifications. Women like to take a balanced portfolio of different types of stocks and diversify their investment options. They prefer investing in reputable financial institutions and banks or firms with whom they have developed a trustful and faithful relationship.
ask experts
Women also want to feel special. They like to come into a room that is calm and don’t like to enter a room that is too crowded. They like to have a personal relationship with their managers so they can sit down and discuss their financial situation and how they want to go about it. It’s not always easy for women especially the older women, to share this kind of information. It takes a lot of relationship building. •
At Last
Surveys show women now expect more and genuinely want to understand and have input into how their money is being invested. They attend regular seminars educating themselves on investment and business opportunities. Financial institutions hire women relationship managers to target and meet their growing needs. As their wealth grows so does the need for information about financial products. For unbiased information please visit informative websites such as: • Bloomberg: www.bloomberg.com • Financial Times: www.ft.com • Morningstar: www. morningstar.com • Standard & Poor: www. standardandpoors.com At last 6 tips for well considered investments: 1. Stefanos Melianos, Executive Sous Chef at Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre shares his best recipes this month that will be the highlight of any meal.
Working as a chef in a big hotel isn’t just about plating the perfect meal; it is also about how that meal comes together, the camaraderie of the staff behind closed kitchen doors that ensure that the guest savors the experience of dining and not just a meal alone. This is the summation of the conversation I shared with Chef Stefanos Melianos, Executive Sous Chef at Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre. Many reasons led to this talk, beginning possibly with the fantastic aromas that caught my attention as I passed by Saveur, en-route to the adjoining T-Spoon Café. And as much I savored the legendary Gerbeaud confectionary shipped directly from Budapest at boutique café… the foodie in me couldn’t wait for supper times to come fast enough to try a menu that features European cuisine with Asian flavors. In addition to this, Saveur’s culinary portfolio includes a creatively designed selection of ‘art’ desserts, a salad bar serving organic vegetables and an Asian station serving Oriental delicacies from China, Japan, South East Asia. As we settled for an interview, Chef Stefanos, was quick to credit travel experience around the world. “I was born in Greece, and then I moved to Germany, followed by work stints in France, Italy Africa, Middle East, Jordan. I’m trained in the German French cuisine (actually European cuisine).” His choice of career came from having literally been born into a hotel environment since his parents own a hotel in Greece. His global outlook is reflected in the menu of Saveur that presents international buffet lunches, whilst the ala carte dining menu features European cuisine with Asian flavours, open cooking stations and private dining pods; a place where you
90
can catch up with your family and friends or colleagues. Having joined this hotel as part of the pre-opening team since the last year, Chef Stefanos is enjoying his stint since he feels creativity is given its due credit when it comes to putting together fabulous menus. “At Kempinski here, as a chef you’re not placed in a box or handed a book with recipes that are cooked in the same style as the other 73 Kempinski brands. Structure is not always great for creativity,” he remarked. Recounting the challenges of being a chef in Bahrain, he said, “I think the major problem we have here in Bahrain is the supplies. Unlike Dubai where you get everything, here we don’t have many companies so we have to get them via Europe ie Jordan, Holland, Europe and Germany mostly. As a chef, you have to plan to be flexible.” The menu selection focuses on fresh ingredients and dishes are added or changed as produce comes into season. “We use the freshest product, cooked simply to perfection.” The ambience of Saveur features a family friendly environment with seating designed to encourage conversation. As a weekend special, the restaurant has created a 5-star Friday international Family Brunch Buffet which features fresh ingredients and timeless classics of their award-winning Executive Chef Holger Jackisch’s specialties. Elaborating on this, Chef Stefanos said “The Friday brunches focuses on the family, kids’ family brunch menu and you can use the pool afterwards. It’s great for family day.” As we reached towards the end of the interview I asked if there was something he still couldn’t cook and out popped the answer, “My mother’s bolognaise! It’s difficult and I have cooked it for years but I still don’t make it like her. Mama’s cooking is different, no matter how good a chef you are!” •

What Really Makes
Abode summer workout challenge
Women Happy? By Nitya Shukla
A Reebok Satisfaction Survey taken this year revealed that feeling healthy (71%) and fit (71%) is at the heart of what really makes women feel most satisfied.
T
hanks to Reebok’s Satisfaction Survey, we know now that keeping in shape and laughing with friends are more important then attending parties or receiving expensive jewellery (two items that dominate the popular clichéd rhetoric). Over 3,000 women from five European countries (UK, Germany, France, Russia, Italy and Spain) ages 18 to 39 participated in this two week quantitative online survey conducted by Reebok, January 2012. HERE are the Results: Keeping Fit Leads to Being Satisfied When questioned on body image, (66%) of women revealed that they thought that having a fit body is important. The women surveyed said that they would prefer to have a small derriere (80%) than a big derriere (20%), a flat stomach (64%). Walking was found to be the most popular form of exercise (19%), ahead of swimming (17%), dance classes (11%) and running (7%). What’s more, 7 out of 10 European women said that they were most satisfied when they were feeling healthy and overall 83 per cent women from the survey voted that being fitter would make them feel more satisfied. This issue is all about being healthy and fit and preparing for summer vacation by dieting and exercising. In the following pages we have included a 7 day diet and exercise workout plan to help you get to

a point where you feel healthier, fitter and more satisfied with your self image! Reebok’s EasyTone ambassadors, Hollywood superstar Eva Mendes and supermodel Helena Christensen are a testament that being healthy and fit is essential to feeling satisfied with one's body. For Eva Mendes, working out

Knowing that you are looking after your body and mind, keeping healthy and looking your best is a great feeling. I’ve been wearing the Reebok EasyTone since it launched and I love them!”
lifestyle
Bonus: The Simple Pleasures Are Important Too This fascinating survey also revealed that women find more satisfaction from simple pleasures than leading a lavish lifestyle; having a clean house (65%), listening to music (58%) and receiving flowers (59%) were all found to be more satisfying than receiving an expensive piece of jewellery (39%) or having a string of parties to go to (27%). Supermodel Helena Christensen said she found her personal satisfaction in the simple things in life including spending time with her son, helping him with his math homework, reading a good book, travelling, photography, collecting antiques, watching the sun set over the ocean, and eating—balancing her love for food with a genuine love of working out to stay in enviable shape.

The
7 Day Fitness Plan Recommended by: Allan Lloyd C. Martinez R.N., Fitness Trainer
Incorporating quick fix in our fitness routine is one of the most challenging parts in our journey towards a healthy lifestyle. We need to get results in a short span of time. And we also need to balance it with erratic eating habits and busy work schedules.
G
iven this kind of predicament, I have designed a seven days cross training program that involves a variety of activities. One major function of cross training is to promote fitness for the whole body. Which is why, I created a meal plan to compliment our quick fix fitness plan. The serving portion of each meal should be adjusted in accordance with your body mass. In order to accomplish the exercises properly, your fitness level should be intermediate to advance. An ideal rest interval between exercises is 30 seconds to 45 seconds. Beginners may modify the exercises by increasing your rest interval and lessening the number of sets and repetitions. It is highly recommended to drink plenty of water while exercising. Your Heart rate is an excellent monitoring of intensity. An elevated heart rate is not necessarily an indication of an effective aerobic training pace. However, if increased heart rate is accomplished by the correct type of activity, then the cardiovascular training potential is substantial. To get your Maximum heart rate here’s the formula: 206.9-(.67xAge) =MHR
96
The Four Aerobic Training Zones • 90% of your MHR – Peak aerobic performance zone • 80% of your MHR – Aerobic Fitness (Endurance) • 70% of your MHR – Aerobic weight management (Fat burning zone) • 60% of your MHR – Moderate Aerobic Zone – Untrained
So in order for us to have a substantial result we need to sustain at least the 70% to 90% of our Maximum Heart rate.
Workout Plan:

snacks For snacks in between meals I highly recommend to take what I call survival foods like Trail mix which is a combination of dried fruit and variety of unsalted and unroasted nuts. It was developed as a snack food to be taken along outdoor hikes. It is considered an ideal snack food because it is tasty, lightweight, easy to store and high in nutritional value. Overall, the program will work out if the nutrition and exercise program followed up accordingly as they are linked one another. A Nutritionist’s Point of View the 7 days fitness plan By Gloria Duran-Renderos B.Sc.,M.P.H. When someone is trying to lose weight, the big question that comes to their mind is ‘how to start’. The person must fight against the thoughts of diets followed with no results, the feeling that they are going to fail again, or giving up the very first day of a program, reassuring themselves that they are fat from birth and that always, instead of losing, they will gain weight. Being thinner for some is like domesticating the beast inside. We have eaten for pleasure so many years and it is difficult for the brain to learn to eat for fitness and health. For those, like me, 200 lbs. young woman to a 130 lbs senior, I can say DO NOT GIVE UP, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU WORK AT IT, WITH PERSISTENCE CONSISTENCY AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

Try these Alternative Diets if you are Vegetarian or Gluten Intolerant If you are interested in following the diet plan but have allergies to gluten or are a vegetarian, we have included alternate food menus that you can follow for all the seven days.
The seven day Fitness Plan written by R.N. Allan Lloyd Martinez, Fitness Trainer of the Diplomatic Club, seem to be an excellent program for someone who wants to start. Both the physical training and the meal plans are very good. The menus are inviting to eat and very healthy. I have added for information a plan for vegetarians and for gluten free sensitivity. I would encourage anyone to look for a fitness trainer with a good knowledge of nutrition to accompany them though a fitness plan. They will be there to encourage, motivate, and coach for at least the first three months of re - educating the brain, which are the toughest.

Get Ready
to ZUMBA! By Nitya Shukla
Workouts should be fun and social. Thank heavens for Zumba!
N
ever the one to sign up for new kinds of workouts, I have my friend Layal to thank for getting me hooked on to the Zumba wave in Qatar. Of course, I had heard about it before, since the Zumba phenomenon has been quite popular here— I just didn’t think I had the moves, balance, dexterity or the energy to last in any kind of workout. Add to that the extraordinary coordination required to keep up with the Latin dance moves (I had lasted but four classes of salsa a few years back). Which is why I ensured Layal knew my doubts, apart from the fact that it was a Thursday night, when

everybody else was in weekend mode. As we approached the class, I could hear loud Latin rhythms pulsing where the class had already begun. I peered inside and I saw a group of hardly ten making the effort to swivel, pivot, and shake their way to fitness. I joined them, nervous, yet keenly intent on busting a few impressive moves. I didn’t get around to much, but by the end, inspired from the dance and music, I had understood the beauty of this workout. All you do is follow the instructor and dance to the rhythm. Now missing a Zumba class feels like missing the real party every Thursday night.
Health benefits: Zumba is a dance fitness method based on salsa and other Latin dance moves, performed to Latin and world music beats, and choreographed to allow people of any fitness or dance experience level to enjoy a fantastic workout. If you think you’d like an exhilarating class filled with good feelings and party-like fun, Zumba makes an excellent choice of a group fitness method to support your fitness goals. I decided the facts straightened out by the most sought-after plastic surgeon in town, Dr Ahmed Seif Makki at the Plastic Surgicentre (149 Najma St, Al-Hilal) who has over 20 years of experience in the field of general and cosmetic surgery. He discussed liposuction with full conviction to what he believes is right and safe for all his patients. According to him, liposuction is a procedure for fat cells removal but not an alternative to dieting and exercise.
time, by the right surgeon and by the right facility in a hospital prepared for such cases.” Having performed many such procedures to better improve his patient’s life, his philosophy on the matter of beauty is that ‘it should look natural and not look fake.’
Originally from Egypt, Dr. Makki initially practiced general surgery gaining experience in trauma, emergency and orthopedic before specializing in plastic surgery. Most recently, the Plastic Surgicentre celebrated its 12th anniversary this year.
For him the right way to perform Lipo is to administer it in limited areas, which is why he cautions against removing too much fat in one session. Lipo also helps with body contouring, and in a way he calls himself as a sculptor. “When you do sculpture, you remove a little bit from some parts of the body to make it balanced, this way is very safe, that is why we now call it Lipo-Sculpture,” he quipped. Dr Makki also specified that he does liposuction for patients who have stubborn pockets of fat. It’s so safe that the patient can go back to work on the same day after the procedure.
Addressing whether liposuction is an extreme measure, Dr Makki clarified that this procedure suffers from misconceptions as accidents in these surgeries got publicized and generated negative publicity. He said that it is lamentable that there are inexperienced plastic surgeons who have performed and sold the concept of lipo as a way to reduce excessive fat in one operation, something that is highly unsafe and may jeopardize the patient’s life. Dr Makki said, “The success of liposuction depends on the right patient and doing it at the right
He also stressed that when selecting patients for any type of plastic surgery, he inspects the different aspects of the person’s health ie psychological, physical and their medical history. Upon inquiry as to what was the the percentage of men and women requiring his service he said , “If you asked the question ten years back I would say 80% ladies, [but] today 65% ladies and 35% men.” Dr Makki added that nowadays men are more conscious about their selves and follow a healthy lifestyle which they see as parallel of their success. The most common procedure

for men is tummy tuck, nose job and facelifts. He categorized for surgery for women in two groups, the first Mommy Make-Up, a procedure for mothers to correct the changed contours affected with pregnancy and the second one Post Pariatric Surgery, which is good for patients who achieved dramatic weight loss and were left with excess skin all over the body. With many women resorting to slimming and firming creams to get rid of cellulite, I asked Dr Makki, whether they matter, he said “Personally, I do not believe in creams. They won’t do any good apart for spending too much money.” Instead he suggested procedures like endomologie and liposuction to combat the cellulite presence. As the interview concluded, I realized that Dr Makki’s outlook for plastic surgery is not only about performing just any procedure but something that can facilitate a healthy lifestyle, one that incorporates following the principle of moderation, sleeping enough, staying away from the sun, avoiding smoking and getting some exercise. All this might surely sound like a cliché, but it’s what the doctor still said. •

Is there any cure for cellulite? Can anyone prevent it? What causes it?
By Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena
As much as we’d like to avoid it, cellulite is a generous affliction, crossing every continent, every race and affecting women of every age— not even Hollywood has escaped it. I mustered all my resources to try to understand more about it.
What causes cellulite? The fact that this is more common in women results from several factors. First, it’s hormones that play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite, and it’s thought estrogen might be the important hormone to kick off and ignite cellulite, though there is no reliable clinical evidence to support such a claim. The second culprit is diet.
How can we prevent it? There are some suggested steps to combat the occurrence of cellulite but it will require patience and discipline, as Health Guidance shares (www. healthguidance.org). Getting rid of the toxins in our body will protect the skin from cellulite and we do this through proper exercise. We always hear that drinking eight glasses of water a day is good for the health; apparently it is also good for warding off cellulite, so drink up ladies! Some doctors suggested the regular use of a sauna or steam room

ccording to Medical News Today, Cellulite is a term used to describe the dimpled appearance of skin caused by fat deposits that are just below the surface of the skin. It generally appears on skin in the abdomen, lower limbs, and pelvic region, and it usually occurs after puberty. There is no shortage of names for it: with medical terms ranging from adiposis edematosa to dermopanniculosis deformans, along with less elegant, colloquial terms such as orange peel syndrome, cottage cheese skin or the ‘mattress phenomenon’.
According to Dr Lionel Bissoon, author of The Cellulite Cure, “changing our diets from organic foods to nutrient poor toxic food has added to the cellulite epidemic.” He also added that eliminating harmful foods can prevent cellulite from forming. The last one is lack of exercise and my, oh my, why am not surprised, because as our culture depends heavily on technology our lifestyle has become increasingly sedentary.

supports in preventing the building of cellulite to some of their patients. Lastly, eating healthfully safeguards you from cellulite, with more vegetables and fish added to your dietary routine. Is there any treatment? As I compile all the necessary information about cellulite, a couple statements surfaced, indicating there’s no treatment to this epidemic! But it seems technology has been advancing and treatment for cellulite has been developed. I had an interview with a plastic surgeon recently and he suggested Endomologie that combines very firm massaging, rolling and sucking at the skin’s surface in an attempt to break up the fat cells that cause cellulite dimpling. Another option is Liposuction, a fat reduction procedure. Yet another alternative is to try slimming/cellulite creams which are available in the market like L’Occitane Amande, Murad Firm and Tone and Shiseido Body Creator. And lastly, watch what you eat! •

The Cellulite Crusher By Nitya Shukla
As ABODE tackles cellulite this month Guerlain Alfardan Spa, helps us understand how and why slimming treatments can be beneficial for your body’s health.
M
ost of us are haunted with dreams of slimming down, shaping up, getting rid of fat rolls and the cellulite in our bodies and hope of finding a miracle cure for the perfect body shape. In our fight against cellulite, this month ABODE dove headfirst into researching and finding out all avenues possible which would help this uphill battle in our health section. While research and technology has made available many treatments which may reduce the appearance of cellulite, improve skin tone and possibly slim down as well. Thanks to Guerlain Alfardan Spa, ABODE had the chance to try their Slim and Firm Silhouette treatment which uses exclusive products from the Guerlain Skin Care range and can facilitate slimming down measures.
Guerlain Slim and Firm Silhouette Treatment According to the spa manager, Victory Assaf, this treatment is intended to redefine the figure along with refining and smoothening the body contours. For optimized results it can be customized to the body type of the customer. Benefits The primary benefit of this therapy is that it identifies and unblocks cellulite accumulation areas in the body. The accompanying massage is geared to actively drain and purify the body tissue to combat excess fat and improve the oxygenation of the tissues. Working simultaneously on the skin, the therapy contributes to the progressive re-vascularization of the superficial layers of the epidermis and prevents the
106
apparition of stretch marks by improving skin elasticity. The seaweeds body wrap used towards the end of the treatment drains, smooths and refines the body. The Procedure Before the application of this treatment, a pre-consultation is set up to know the pace and status of the client’s lifestyle. As per the therapist, this treatment is aimed at facilitating the slimming goals of the clients. The treatment is divided into three major steps: 1. Exfoliation: Eliminates dead skin cells and eases the penetration of active ingredients. 2. Specific slimming and firming massage: Makes the skin more supple and unlocks the fiber tissue with a specific Draining and Firming Concentrate. 3. Body Wrap: A selection amongst two wraps is done, to allow the remineralization of the tissue and eliminate toxins or to firm and tone. A Personal Take Showing up for a slimming treatment is in many ways humbling experience especially at the time when they fling the measuring tape around one’s waist. However it’s always nice when your therapist reminds you that you just need to ‘shave off only a few pounds.’ Getting rid is cellulite is by no means an easy experience and when you have a therapist manually unblocking and breaking down
these accumulations; the experience can be a bit painful. The treatment lasts between 90 minutes to two hours (recommended time) and the therapist focused on the problematic areas of the body. The session ends with a relaxing massage and a rejuvenating scalp massage. Recommendation for the treatment 1. Attack Phase: Twice per week for the first four weeks. 2. Vigilance phase: One session per week 3. Consolidation phase: One session every two weeks. It is recommended that a total of eight weeks to be dedicated to this. This treatment is best suited for people who are already on the weight loss track and want to consolidate the process with a slimmer and firmer body. In addition to this, Guerlain Alfardan Spa also offers, Weight loss and fitness customized packages, male and female salon, couple packages, half and full day relaxation and exclusive ladies hours and events.

The Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre
When Business Is On Your Mind Don't Leave The Family Behind! By Nitya Shukla
The Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre is a great destination that gives you the best of both worlds, business and pleasure.

he ‘Lady in Red’ was the first to catch my eye as I walked out into the arrival lounge of the Bahrain International Airport. Having never met before, my confusion would have surely reflected on my face, but she greeted me with the familiarity of an old friend, asking me about my flight and whether I was tired. Her elegant persona was my first hint of generous heart-warming hospitality that awaited my two- day sojourn at The Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre. The ‘Lady in Red’, being the most recognizable symbol, created to complement the

prestigious role of concierge present in all Kempinski hotels, and described as ‘an embodiment of savoir vivre, cultural tradition, beauty and discernment elements that make the luxury brand of Kempinski recognizable to every guest.’ And so in accordance, I adjusted my hair (discreetly) and straightened out my hunch so that I could present myself as to be worthy of this attention. Soon we were speeding away to Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre, a fabulous property that was unveiled late last year and is credited with an envious location in the heart of Bahrain’s
fashionable Seef district. My knowledge of Bahrain prior to that had been woeful, so I looked out the window with the curiosity of a four-year old, and again, I had to adjust my wide eyed expression, as the ‘Lady in Red’ reminded me to drink some water, so the summer sun wouldn’t dehydrate me. Clearly she was going to be a friend I could count on! During the next two days I saw her frequently as she took the time to explain all the different things I could do while vacationing in Bahrain. Coming from the bustling life in Qatar, Bahrain seemed slightly quieter and relaxed and afforded great panoramic vistas of the ocean from every corner.

A short drive later, and we had arrived at our destination. As I stepped into the fabulous property, I almost wished that I could trade my profession with one that would make me look exactly like the target audience of the Kempinski Bahrain: a hot-shot corporate business professional who travels frequently for business and would better appreciate the world-class conference centres and business-oriented facilities on offer. Never mind, I comforted myself, when I was introduced to the fabulous amenities that make this address
a perfect vacation spot—all these features, of course, bearing the stamp of luxury and sophistication that is exclusive to the Kempinski brand all over the world. Having previously visited Kempinski properties in Qatar (Doha) and India (New Delhi), and now Bahrain (Manama) I was immediately struck with a certain crispness, I don’t know if I was being affected by all the business suits in the lounge area or was it in the air or the simple elegant interiors that is a familiar sign with this European hospitality brand. The European flair, Arabic touch and crisp luxury are ubiquitous at this location. An

Beijing
Ancient city and massive megalopolis
WORDS AND IMAGES By F. Webb
With all the media bustling about in anticipation of the upcoming London summer games, let’s take a moment, step back and look at the Olympic host city of 4 years ago - Beijing.
B
eijing is an ancient city and massive megalopolis, full of history, but with a very modern face to the world. That face is largely the result of the 2008 Olympic preparation undertaken. The central focus was of course the Olympic venues, but like wavelets radiating outward from a stone dropped in still waters, the Olympic flame of renewal touched everything in and around Beijing. Obviously, one could spend months exploring such a unique and complex city, but if you only have a day or two, here are some top recommendations for places to see and things to do in Beijing: The Summer Palace The Summer Palace is my favorite spot in Beijing. You always come away with great photos and feeling better for having visited. Located in the northwest corner of the city, it is nestled in the foothills of a small mountain range and the higher elevation makes it a few degrees cooler than the low-lying city. In the late nineteenth century - just over 100 years ago - the Summer Palace complex was greatly expanded and renovated by the Empress Dowager Cixi, mother of the last Emperor of China. She diverted 1.2 million kilograms of silver from the Navy to pay the bill, resulting in China’s defeat, a few years later, in the
114
first Sino-Japanese war. Some historians say this is one of the primary reasons why the last Emperor of China, was in fact the last Emperor of China. In any event, the Palace with its surrounding lakes and parks, makes a very pleasant place to spend a morning, Summer Palace or an entire day, but it may become a bit crowded on the weekends. The Great Wall It is said that no visit to Beijing is truly complete without a visit to the Great
lifestyle
The Great Wall of China
Wall. This is pretty much an all day outing as the closest, and bestpreserved section of the Great Wall is about a 3-hour drive from downtown. If you go very early, you can avoid the rush hour traffic - which often lasts all day in Beijing - and you will arrive before it starts getting crowded. A cable car (ski lift really) is available to take you up the mountain to the top of the Wall. To return, you can also use the cable car, or if you are a bit more adventurous, take the bobsled down the hill. The Temple of Heaven This is both a fun and scenic spot. You will find the local Beijingers picnicking, dancing, or performing Tai Chi on the surrounding well-groomed lawns. The Temple complex is where the Emperor would come to offer the annual prayers for a good harvest and another year of prosperity for the country. The buildings have been faithfully restored to their former

glory and you will come away with some wonderful photos, and some great memories of Beijing. Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City. That sounds like a title for an Indiana Jones movie, but actually Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City are just across the street from each other. Tian’anmen Square (literally - Gate of Heavenly Peace) is the heart of Beijing and it is a big place – there are some airports that are not as big. The scale is intended to give one a sense of China’s greatness. Mao’s Tomb is at the center of the Square and the “Great Hall of the People” or seat of government, as well as other important buildings surround the Square. If you’re
a museum lover, the massive National Museum of China is on the west side of the square directly across from the Hall of the People. There is usually a long queue to view Chairman Mao in his glass sarcophagus and as you might well imagine, security is very tight. At the north end of the Square, across the street is a gigantic portrait of Mao. This iconic spot marks the entrance to the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is a city within a city, within a city. It was the main residence of the Emperor and was termed “Forbidden” because most people were not allowed to enter - only the ruling Mandarin class would enter and many of them, in fact, lived there. Parts of the Forbidden City are still forbidden as some of the current ruling class lives or works there. The Forbidden City is a big place and it’s best to start at the south entrance, work your way to the north entrance, and take a taxi from there or have your driver meet you. As a note of interest, most of the Beijing Olympic venues were laid out on a northsouth line from Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City. Apparently this was a common city planning practice in ancient

China when laying out important buildings and was used as a subtle method to emphasize the importance of the Olympics to the Chinese populous. Dining out. Dining in Beijing can be a delightful experience. Not far from Tian’anmen Square is the famous Quanjude Beijing Duck Restaurant. In operation since 1864, it is the signature spot for Beijing’s most famous entrée. If you prefer something more modern or western, try Beijing’s Hard Rock Café near the Lufthansa Center or the Irish Pub just around the corner. The live music and good food is unsurpassed.

Getting there. Getting to Beijing couldn’t be easier. Qatar Airways offers daily nonstops to the Chinese capital. Of note, the route of flight usually crosses the Himalayas at the Pakistani-Sino border just after sunrise making for some great airborne photos of these majestic mountains. Tourist visas can be obtained at the Chinese Embassy in Doha, but allow a day or two for processing. A reliable travel agent can usually help expedite the process. A final tip: be sure to carry a card with the name and location of your hotel written in Chines with you. It can save you from untold frustrations when dealing with your taxi driver. Tulum, México Ecotourism at its Greenest

A place where Pre-Colombian ruins rest alongside the sea, one can understand why the Mayan Kings considered this destination a place of wonder and worship. The only way to truly understand the beauty of such a place is to venture to see it for yourself...
N
estled in the Yucatan Peninsula and perched on a bluff that overlooks the aqua and emerald Caribbean Sea is the archeological paradise of Tulum, whose name derives from the Mayan word for ‘wall’. An unassuming walled city that stands in contrast to the majestic landscape that envelops it, and a bohemian fishing port known for its secluded beaches and alabaster white sand—here accommodations primarily consist of boutique hotels that offer thatched campestral cabañas on the beach.
When it comes to tourism, the ‘eco’ variety reflects an endeavour to conserve and enhance the bioculture diversity of an area while improving the welfare of the local people. One such place that has popped-up in Tulum—in every sense of the word—has taken that practice to the next level with the pop-up hotel, Papaya Playa Project (originally
It’s a place that combines an awareness of the environment with an appreciation for local culture and a continuing deep devotion for the ancient Mayan civilization and its ruins. The main sites are El Castillo, a watchtower of Toltec influence; The Temple of the Frescoes; and The Temple of the Descending God, all located in what is considered today one of the best beach destinations in the world: the Mayan Riviera. Praised by the international community for leading the way in sustainable ecotourism, Tulum has gone from sleepy port city to a thriving hub for ecological consciousness. “Sounds fancy”—you may be thinking to yourself—followed by, “what exactly does that mean?”

Auto Review Porsche Carrera S
By Wissam Assaf, Autopotenza Racing Photography Jessie Palanca
T
he latest edition of the 911 (internally coded as the 991) is the, most advanced and smartest Carrera of all time. This car was born on the race track back in 1963 and aesthetically it hasn’t changed much since then, which emphasizes the brainwave behind creating this car: individuality, urban drivability and sheer sportiness. Nevertheless, the driving experience has undergone a quantum leap over the last six models that have been released to date. The engineers at Dr. Ing.h.c. F. Porsche AG have simply respected the heritage and for that, they deserve a standing ovation. For, which other car do you know has managed to maintain its lines and essence for a full 50 years and still sets the benchmark in its category and beyond? Ok fine, enough with the emotions, let’s get down to business‌ The car we have had the privilege of driving is the most powerful version of the new 911 in the market to date, the Carrera S. Its famous 3.8L boxer engine
122
seemed at its limit in the previous version, (known as 997), but this time Porsche has managed to take it much closer to flawlessness. It generates 400hp instead of the earlier 385hp and so the car dashes from standstill to 100kph in just 4.1 seconds (with PDK 7-speed double clutch transmission & Sport+) vs. 4.3 seconds for the 997. The engine mapping can be altered with a touch of the Sport button for much better responsiveness. You can also go for the sporty suspension and exhaust settings. And why not, once you gain confidence in handling the car, you can move onto test your skills by switching the Sport Plus button on so that you can experience a new unending world of pleasure and thrill, guaranteed. The power delivery on the ground feels much more efficient as well, not only because of the superb engine, but the car handles quite better and suffers from less understeer thanks to a wider front track, the standard PTV Plus and the optional PDCC. PTV Plus (Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus) engages while cornering by applying the required amount of braking power
to the inner rear wheel, thereby making the car faster and more controllable. The PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control) is an active system for reducing lateral body movement and decreasing the effect of the main enemy of any race driver, body roll. It is worth noting though that these performance enhancements have come from an aluminum rich car that is 60 kg lighter and surprisingly cleaner and more economical by up to 16% from the previous model (not that its owners will lose sleep over 16% more fuel consumption, but still). Aside from this supercar performance, the new Carrera S is a perfect choice for your daily ride. I drove it on the crowded
lifestyle
Doha roads without any glitches. The 4-way electrically adjustable Sports seats and steering wheel give you a feeling of control, comfort and sportiness at the same time. Its longer wheelbase allows for an extra 25mm leg room in the front while the rear seating capacity remains as expected from a 2+2 but is slightly more roomy and comfortable. You start the brilliantly roaring engine with the same macho style (key to the outer side of the steering wheel), then indulge in choosing your favorite CD among the 6 you can fit in the player and enjoy the optional 445 watts BOSE sound system or even better the 821 watts Burmester High-End Surround Sound System. As an alternative, a universal USB audio interface is also available. In the immense heat of the gulf summer, you would need an efficient automatic climate control system which is standard on the Carrera and allows separate temperature control for the driver and passenger. Your phone can be hooked up via the Bluetooth capability or you can simply insert a SIM card into the built in reader. Besides the multipurpose 7-inch touchscreen in the center console which we don’t need to elaborate much on, the instrument panel (still composed of five circular indicators) features a new user friendly 4.6-inch TFT color screen that conveys useful on-
automotive
board computer data, easily accessible from the multifunction steering wheel. One of the characteristics I was mostly amazed by is how silently and smoothly this car handled road bumpiness and cleared humps, even with the harder damping settings switched on and considering it is fitted with standard 20” low profile tires. On all other supercars you have to consult your family and friends before enjoying the launch control feature because your warranty would be annulled after a certain number of launches (usually around 20). With Porsche you can keep experiencing that adrenaline rush any day any minute without any restrictions. That’s how much the manufacturer has learned from his racing legacy and trusts the design of the car. The new Carrera S remains an excellent combination between luxury and sportiness. Its first major inspection is only due after 60,000 km; that’s how reliable the car is expected to be. The only thing it doesn’t have is a commonly affordable price tag, but maybe that’s in the essence of its exclusivity. For its lucky future owners I simply have to say, I hate you! •
