Welcome

FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

DEAR READERS,

R

amadan Kareem! The Holy Month is here and ABODE is ready for it. This month our issue is jam-packed with the flavours, culture and celebrations of Ramadan. We’ve got your full guide to every iftar and suhoor, plus a highlight of the traditions and tastes of this special month to help you prepare and enjoy with family and friends.

BEHIND THE SCENES This issue is all about Arabian glamour and ABODE couldn't think of a better location to capture the grandeur of Arabia than Marsa Malaz Kempinski! A big thanks to Angel Mallari for some truly stellar snaps, while ABODE girls Chet, Marisela & Keertana made the prep look easy! Afra and Ana took the makeup and hair to a whole other level this shoot. Go team!

In fashion we bring you our best and brightest musthaves for Ramadan, plus some truly decadent eveningwear in our Haute Arabia fashion shoot set in the opulent grandeur of the new Marsa Malaz Kempinski. Featuring gowns by Rosa Clara, accessories from Salam Plaza and abaya by Dar Aldazah, we show you how you can look your best and most elegant at any iftar or Eid gathering. Because ABODE loves going local, we’re also proud to bring you an exclusive interview in our Fashion Insider pages with Qatar’s very own Maha Al Mannai, founder of fashion abaya house Dar Aldazah. Then it’s off to the catwalk for a sneak peek at Bottega Veneta’s Cruise Collection 2015. The Holy Month is also a time to be mindful of the needs of others, and ABODE couldn’t think of a better person who embodies the gift of giving back than I Love Qatar’s Khalifa Saleh Al Haroon. We go one-on-one with the young entrepreneur who recently made the ranks of Arabian Business’s ‘100 Most Powerful Arabs Under 40’ list. We all know him as Mr. Q., but we were keen to learn more about his passion for building a sustainable community that we can all call home.

There’s loads more to read, explore and catch your fancy in this month’s special Ramadan issue, from wellness tips to a peek inside local fashion blogger Irina Aloyants’ closet, to a memorable ABODE escape to the Big Apple in New York, we hope you love every page. Ramadan Kareem!

Jewelry Edit From swans and flowers to the moon and back, it’s all about shimmery, glittery sparkles for this season. Slather on some elegance and grace with the latest jaw-dropping collections in diamonds and precious stones designed to set you a cut above the rest!

SWAN IN DIAMONDS!

The Swan Collection, inspired by the perfect symmetry of the swan’s plumage, brings to life the sensual shapes of the marquise diamonds through exquisite design and attention to detail. The marquise-cut stone tapers up to finely pointed tips, but just as in the birds plumage, when each diamond is layered together to recreate the feathers of the swan, the result is smooth, fluid and soft! Swan Collection Marquise Cut, Messika Paris.

WEARABLE WORK OF ART

The latest addition to the Traditional Collection, this dazzling timepiece featuring in credibly beautiful diamonds in a range of cuts and sizes is an epitome of elegance and design. The dial is set invisibly, giving the appearance of an uninterrupted wash of stones, while the diamonds that form the collar around the dial are set in a petal-like configuration. Traditional Collection, Alain Philippe

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

8

Offered in rose gold or silver, the Heart Collection pays homage to Escada in the 1980's when its accessories, prints and perfume flask brought the brand’s heart motif to prominence. In an ensemble of necklace, bracelet and earrings, the double-E logo draws upon this universal symbol, which is set among shiny Swarovski stones and made in gold-plated brass. The iconic heart line comprises nine styles of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Necklace and Earrings, Heart Collection, Escada.

Weaving Culture Through Design They say a picture paints a thousand words. This sentiment resonates naturally through stunningly crafted designs by Maha Al Mannai, founder of local fashion house, Dar Aldazah. BY LAURA PRIOR

T

his Holy Month, Maha has created a celebratory collection that speaks to her culture. In a country where art, heritage and history have inspired a nation-wide fashion frenzy, the colourful, classy and captivating pieces show off her exuberant Qatari pride to exacting perfection. ABODE had the privilege of chatting to this go-getting, gifted fashionista. ABODE: From where did your passion for fashion and design grow? MAHA AL MANNAI: I have had this passion since I was just 9 years old. I found that I liked to design my own clothes and it all started when I designed my wedding gown. I was inspired by mermaids! ABODE: Tell us about your journey so far. Did you study fashion or are you self taught? MAHA: When I was in school there weren't many options to study fashion so I didn’t have that chance. So, I’m self taught and its all made by passion. ABODE: You are inspired by Islamic Art. Where do you see the correlation between art and fashion? MAHA: Fashion to me is art. I've always seen it this way because every piece starts with a blank canvas. I am in love with Islamic art. It’s rich and looks amazing. Needs a lot of focus to work with it but the results speak for themselves.

ABODE: Can fashion be used as a platform to promote change and positive action in the world? MAHA: Yes it can, by creating options. You can wear clothes that reflect your culture wherever you are in the world and that in turn changes people's opinions about different cultures. ABODE: Define style. MAHA: Style is taste. It shows personality through one’s fashion sense.

ABODE: You created a Ramadan collection last year, too. How is the 2015 collection different? MAHA: Every collection and piece is different but they are connected by the theme – culture. This season, we added more colour. ABODE: How can fashion reflect culture? MAHA: It’s reflected in the design. For example, our hand made-beaded designs (also drawn by hand) are not only beautiful, they are also modest.

ABODE: Sum up Dar Aldazah in 3 words. MAHA: Simplicity, class, culture.

FASHION TO ME IS ART. I'VE ALWAYS SEEN IT THIS WAY BECAUSE EVERY PIECE STARTS WITH A BLANK CANVAS. I AM IN LOVE WITH ISLAMIC ART. IT’S RICH AND LOOKS AMAZING. . MAHA AL MANNAI

ABODE: You like to mix tradition and innovation. Describe that creative process. MAHA: We mix it by creating pieces that are not too revealing. We think about the the right context for our Abaya's. The colours are also a part of the traditional side of our designs. ABODE: If you can dress ANYONE in the world, who would it be and why? MAHA: Of course I would say Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Misned and Her Highness Sheikha Jowaher Bint Suhaim AlThani. They are my icons.

ABODE: Qatar is fast becoming a fashion hotspot. How do you think the scene will look 20 years from now? MAHA: I think there will be more amazing designers, and it might even become the best place to shop! ABODE: What’s next for Dar Aldazah? MAHA: We have lots of new and upcoming projects that I haven't done before. I hope you join me in my journey!

“Belle Of The Blogs” Hold on to your hats, bags, shoes and shades because this month ABODE turns the fashion tables on one of the country's trailblazing style bloggers, Irina Aloyants, as we are invited to look inside her wardrobe! BY LAURA PRIOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAAD MAKEUP ARTIST: LIDIA HYBENIK @LIDIAHYBENIK

S

imply stylish, even in her casual wear, the begetter of ‘Your Wardrobe Qatar’ greets us at her front door. A huge grin on her face, she is bursting to ask right off the bat, “Can I show you my shoe collection?’’ Her eyes light up. So do ours! However, there is much more than just Swarovski-encrusted stilettos shimmering in the twinkle of this lady's eye. Armenian/Russian Irina is clearly smart, genteel and worldly. We marvel at her own artwork hanging around her colourful and welcoming home and drool over (sorry Irina!) the silk skirts she has created featuring her own hand-drawn designs as she effortlessly switches between English, Russian and Spanish - charming our whole crew. But, how does she translate her compendium of interests so well into fairytalestatus blogging? We find out!

My Way,

My Style

What inspired you to become a blogger? I have always had a passion for art and fashion. To me they go hand in hand. I like to create abstract paintings, so colourful combinations of prints and shapes attract my attention. It represents who I am: fun, colourful and a mix-and-match of styles.

Sum up your personal style.

I like to mix designer with high street. I love some quality high street brands like Topshop, Zara and H&M, particularly when they do their designer collaborations, and I usually mix the look with a designer bag or designer shoes and accessories. I am inspired by colour and print combinations, and I like to add colour accents to everything. I might add pink shoes to an all-black outfit, for example.

What attracts people to your blog and what keeps them interested? I think my followers in Qatar are interested to find out about new boutique openings, new collections launched locally, and my picks of high street and designer brands. I hope they take inspiration from my personal style choices.

Blogging is so accessible these days. How do you stand out? I think it is individuality and character that make a blog stand out. Who needs a glass slipper when we have Valentino?

26/05/15 14:40

There is an ongoing debate in the blogosphere about authenticity. How important is it to appear authentic in what you do? It is extremely important for every blogger to be authentic in their style choices rather than chasing the famous brands. It is very important for me to be truthful. For example, when I say I like something - I really do like it! I do not wear clothes because of the label; I wear what I like even if it's a relatively unknown brand.

We are going to cast you away to a desert island. You can take only 3 luxury items from your closet or make-up bag. Name them! My

Dress: Erdem – Per Lei Couture Clutch: Tonya Hawkes – Per Lei Couture Shoes: Sophia Webster Ring: Own – Vintage & wedding ring

Dior Nude Air foundation because it has 25 spf sun screen, my Jimmy Choo glittery Nanda slide sandals because I can't live without them, and my Dermalogica moisturiser for the face.

How can you turn a blog into a business? By not treating it as a business. All successful bloggers have become successful by staying true to their personal style choices. It is very easy to lose credibility by pursuing advertising options at the expense of your personal style.

Give us your top 3 tips for successful blogging. 1. Take clear photos, 2. Stay true to your personal style 3. Be consistent with your posts

Name one style rule every woman should break. I do not believe in style rules! If you like it, wear it! A look inside Irina's World

Fantasy flat-lay

Who are your style icons and what is your favourite fashion era? I take inspiration from a lot of great people from the past and present. It can be anyone from Monica Bellucci who is very classy and timeless to Anna Dello Russo who is very colourful and has a quirky style. My favourite fashion era is now because you can do whatever you want with your style and use your creativity to the fullest.

Are there any local fashion brands or designers that you follow and admire? I have modelled an abaya for a Qatari designer Muna Al Sulaiti at Qatar International Fashion week as a blogger ,and I find her designs very inspiring. I am also in love with the evening gowns by Dabya which are sold at 51 East. I have met both designers personally and they are lovely!

How is the local blogging landscape evolving? There are more and more fashion bloggers in Qatar now than even 6 months ago. They are evolving which is exciting to see. It’s great to network and see how we can help each other grow and develop.

How will the future of blogging look? I think it will move from being web-based completely into the social media realm. Instagram fashion bloggers are gaining momentum in particular, for example Chiara Ferragni, an international fashion blogger for ‘’The Blonde Salad’’ who appeared on the cover of Vogue Spain recently.

MEN’S SCENT-SIBILITY While Men’s fashion tells us about the person on the outset, his fragrance reflects more of his inner personality. Let us meet 2 men that shape the industry as they represent the newest fragrances from the pillars in fashion, and at the same time discover their scent-sibilities.

S

ean O’Pry Born on 5 July 1989, in Kennesaw, in the state of Georgia in the United States, was spotted on MySpace in 2006. Since then, campaigns and runway shows for the top names in fashion have followed in swift succession, and he has also featured in music videos by Madonna or more recently in Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”. Forbes magazine named him the most successful male model in the world. In short, Sean O’Pry is a simple guy. On Twitter (@seanopry55), he sometimes quotes the most stylish men who ever existed, who ever existed, the illustrious Humphrey Bogart and the legendary Frank Sinatra.

THE IMPERTINENT SEDUCER In Paco Rabanne 1 Million Cologne’s campaign, Sean represents a seductive, elegant and charming man, he moves forward under envious and jealous eyes. He plays his life as if it were a poker game, knowing when to play his cards as needed. Ready for anything to get what he wants, he knows that banking on gold can win him the game. His smile creates thrills and sighs of pleasure, the ultimate fantasy of the perfect seducer. He is sure that he will have all that he wants, and much more. A mirror of this Eau du Toilette with golden glints, whose cocktail blends humour with elegance, luxury with euphoria and freshness with the breath of freedom that is never taken for granted, Sean O’Pry’s face appears in front of photographer Gregory Harris’ lens. Jacket buttoned over a bare chest, a magnetic gaze, his hand raised… Sean attracts every eye, with a ravishing and irresistible snap of the fingers.

THE MODERN URBAN GENTLEMAN

A

ndrew James Cooper Born 24th

Feb 1981 in Whythenshawe Manchester, Andrew was spotted at clothes show live at age 16. He moved to London to pursue music career at 17 and signed with global talent (Ashley Tabor) and recorded an album but never got released. At 18 he became the face of Topman for 6 successive seasons.

In 2003 he shot the cover of wallpaper magazine (highest selling issue ever) followed by Vogue, GQ, l'Uomo vogue, Details, to name a few. Other than modeling and acting, Andrew is keen at exploiting gaps in the market and uses his keen eye for design and concepts. In his portfolio he owns: The Mutz Nutz, a unique pet boutique and groomers in Notting Hill and is a favourite with Notting Hill’s elite; WildWash, an all natural Pet Shampoo business selling in over 3000 retailers worldwide; Juiceman, quite simply the best drinks/juice brand ever. Juice man is 100% organic and sustainable; and Batch, a new concept shop offering Organic Vegan food in east London.

Icon by Dunhill reflects classic masculinity with a witty and energetic approach to life. It is informal, intelligent, a powerful leader with an interest in international events and affairs. His powerful presence encapsulates his way of living, charting his own course regardless of the destination, driving is his constant; an act he finds infinitely pleasurable and synonymous with escape. He exudes confidence without arrogance, appeal without ego. He is practical in a way that unintentionally reveals true character. He is self-aware and a habitual traveler of the world. Active yet balanced, self-assured and in control, he carries his life experiences with him - the way Andrew Cooper feels about himself as the new ambassador of the brand. He describes the character of the dunhill man who would wear this fragrance to be a masculine, confident and refined gentleman who embodies understated elegance. “I picture him as a world traveler who enjoys the finer things in life”, he added. “Each time I have represented the brand I have been able to explore new and specific elements of the dunhill man’s personality. I think the simple fact that he is constantly evolving as a man is something I can identify with. I really like his personality, his character and the fact that he knows how to conduct himself appropriately for every occasion.” “As an actor, I generally choose a specific perfume for the character. It definitely helps me to add further insight into the character I’m playing. I feel there is a strength and confidence that comes from wearing a great fragrance. It’s the perfect finishing touch to a great suit,” he concluded.

Ramadan Kareem! BY KEERTANA KODURU

T

he holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner! For locals, it is the time for a spiritual detox & to respond to a higher calling of worship. For expats, it is the time to respect Arab traditions and adapt to the “culture change” during this month, it really isn’t impossible! We at Abode, request our readers to be mindful of the traditions and go through our Ramadan Guide. This will help you embrace the reasons of this ritual, as well as give you an insight to some interesting facts. Let’s elaborate the concept – 4W’s & H!

What is RA MA DA N? Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar which is marked by the sighting of the crescent moon. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. All muslims are encouraged to read the Holy Quran at least once during this month. The Quran was first recited during this month which makes it the most important month of the year for Muslims.

Why is this month important? As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking. Muslims are called upon to use this month to re-evaluate their lives in light of Islamic guidance. It also involves the taxing challenge of avoiding ill speech, arguments, loss of temper and malicious behavior. The whole point is to keep the mind focused on a spiritual plane. Fasting is not merely physical, but is rather the total commitment of the person's body, mind and soul.

When is it followed? Starting on the 17th of June this year, Ramadan will be followed for 29-30 days based on the sighting of the crescent moon. Iftar and Suhoor are the 2 most important meals of the day taken at dawn and dusk with prayers offered before and after the meals. IFTAR – This occurs just after sunset (Maghrib), and is the equivalent of breakfast. Yes, you break-fast just after 7pm. Traditionally it is dates and water or milk (the Prophet Mohammed broke his fast with three dates), similar to a small breakfast many of us would take in the mornings. SUHOOR – If Iftar is your breakfast, then Suhoor is your dinner. However, Suhoor is not usually eaten directly after Iftar, but in fact in the very early morning, just before Fajr prayers and the sunrise.

Where is it followed & By who? Strictly followed in all Arab countries and by Muslims all over the world, the month brings in a sense of patience, sacrifice and a commitment level for worship amongst followers. Attending an Iftar/Suhoor gathering is for all religions alike. It is a time of festivities each day to gather around family & loved ones to share a meal together.

How is RA MA DA N followed? The point of Ramadan is to restrain oneself from Food/Drink/Smoke during the day and it is a time when Muslims around the world focus on prayer, fasting, giving to charity, and religious devotion. The how’s:

• Be careful not to disrespect the rules of the country and most importantly to not Eat/ drink in public. • Most restaurants that serve all day will be closed during Fasting hours. • Most businesses follow shorter work hours distributed in the morning and late evenings. • Be patient while on the road. It is possible that traffic is slower than usual. Stay off the roads during Iftar and Suhoor times if possible or be kind enough to let others pass by. • Greet a fellow Muslim by saying “Ramadan Kareem” or “Ramadan Mubarak”. • Regardless of your religion, if you’re offered dates as a gesture to break the fast at dusk, accept politely, and greet them. • Be mindful of prayers calls during the day wherever you are- at the malls, in the office, or on the road. Note - The elderly, sick, and mentally ill are exempt from the fasting. Also exempt are pregnant women, women during the period of their menstruation, and women nursing their newborns. In some Muslim communities, people who miss the fasting portion of Ramadan are expected to compensate by feeding the poor and unfortunate during the suhoor and iftar meals. Ramadan in Qatar is an experience in itself. As an expat, it might take a while to get used to the change but it gets easier if you practice respect, compassion and patience to understand what the holy festival of Ramadan is all about. Watch out for the mouth-watering dishes like Harees, Ouzi, Umm Ali, Kunafe and Qatayef!

“According to Mr. Q”

Someone had to do it. Take up the mantle. Tell the stories of Qatar. Young local entrepreneur, Khalifa Saleh Al Haroon, a.k.a ‘Mr Q.’. BY LAURA PRIOR PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANGEL MALLARI

I

n an exhilarating era for the country, Khalifa has worked hard, taken risks and carved himself out as the go-to guy on all things maroon and white, and he’s not holding back. This issue he lets us into his World, which includes a trip to the Moon, and in the spirit of the Holy Month offers up some insight on how expats can enjoy it.

ABODE: What’s your background? MR Q: I grew up in Bahrain as we moved there for my Father’s job when I was small. I regularly flew back to Qatar to visit family though. It always felt like an adventure. ABODE: How is Qatar different now compared to 20 years ago? MR Q: It is a bit of a cliche, but it was a simpler time. We’d visit neighbours and send them food. We’d hang out with cousins and play. We looked forward to family time. Nowadays, I feel like most of that has faded and it’s about luxury dinners and lavish tent celebrations. That's not to say that we don't spend time with family, of course. Perhaps it’s nostalgia. Maybe that’s what makes me miss the good old days? ABODE: What is your favourite thing about Qatar today? MR Q: I love seeing so many people from around the world here in Qatar. Most really embrace the culture and want to learn. We share learnings, make new friends and we all have this feeling of ‘hope’. A hope, that in Qatar, we’re all working towards a better future. I truly believe we’re building the future and making history. ABODE: You have built up a strong public persona and are know known as ‘’Mr Q”, the voice of the Qatari youth. No pressure! …but seriously, how do you feel about that title and being akin to that role? MR Q: I don't really think of it much. My

40

ABODE June FINAL.indd 40

26/05/15 14:41

goal is to bridge the gap between expats and locals. I feel proud of the fact that people love to hear what I have to say, and prouder that people trust what it is I’m saying. It only takes one person to convince you to love or hate a country, hopefully I’m spreading the love! ABODE: Define a role model MR Q: Someone you can look up to and learn from. Someone who sets the bar and motivates you to be a better person. Who inspires you to be a role model yourself. ABODE: You are off on a sabbatical to the Moon courtesy of ABODE (you’re welcome!). You can only take 3 personal items. What would they be and why? MR Q: 1. Assuming I’ve got internet and a charger, I need my iPhone. 2. A super strong telescope to see the people I love. 3. The Qatari flag! I want to be the first person to put a Qatari flag on the moon! ABODE: Whats next for Mr Q? MR Q: The sky’s the limit. I really want to grow my YouTube network so that Qatar can be seen as a digital content hub. I also want to see House Of Wow take off. We’re working hard to take things to a whole new level. Watch this space! ABODE: Finally, what are your memories of Ramadan when you were a small child MR Q: I remember having to learn how to curb my hunger. As kids, we’d all try to ‘mistakenly’ break our fast. Like gargling with water and going ‘Whoops! I swallowed some!’’ Growing older I remember being woken up by family early in the morning and being served a super early break-fast and praying before having another sleep and then getting ready for school. We’d watch the canon go off on television, we’d huddle around the table to break our fast with some traditional food and Vimto. It’s not Ramadan without a ice cold jug of Vimto!

Mr Q’s Guide To Ramadan IT’S NOT JUST FOR MUSLIMS! You read it right…Ramadan is for everyone. It’s all about unification and appreciating life and everyone can do that. So, I encourage everyone in Qatar to join in the festivities. Use it as an opportunity to socialize, meet others, and if you want to go the extra mile, be grateful for what you have in life. You can participate in events and enjoy the huge lavish dinners (oh yes, the irony!) that happen all around Qatar during the Holy Month. WANT TO TRY FASTING? Fasting begins from sunrise and yes, that means nil by mouth, including food and drinks. It’s purpose is to purify and to teach appreciation. No bad words, no food, no water and no rudeness. You’re supposed to be kind, gentle, pure and appreciate the fact that you are lucky in life to have food. It’s a chance to reflect and think about those who have less in life. You can find out fasting times at the Ministry of Interiors website (www.islamweb.com) or even receive free daily texts from Vodafone to find out. Once you’ve gone through that for the day, it’s time to eat at sundown. The cannon blasts into the sea (the boom sound signifies it is time to break your fast) BUT… don’t go gorging your face! You’re supposed to eat three dates. Wait 30-60 minutes and then start eating. Why three dates? Because that’s what The Prophet Mohammed ate. A more scientific answer is that it is just enough to kick start your metabolism, has enough sugar to keep you going for a bit longer out of that hunger phase and just like Pringles, one is not enough. ! GARANGAO - FESTIVAL FOR KIDS! In the middle of Ramadan (the 14th to be exact) we celebrate Garangao [pronounced Ga-ran-ga-oh]. In the evening, children clad in their traditional clothes, will come out of their homes and knock on every door in their neighbourhood. Be ready to receive them with sweets and nuts which they collect in special cotton bags hanging loosely from their necks. Kids will be seen wandering around the streets until late into the night singing the special Garangao song. The festival is unique to the Gulf, particularly Qatar, and is believed to have its roots in the pearl-diving tradition of the Region. Over the years, it has gained in popularity with several expatriates joining the celebrations and I encourage all nationalities to enjoy this festive occasion. Every year, ‘ILQ’ (www.iloveqatar.net) launches a special Ramadan site that has all of the events and info you need to have a joyous Ramadan. It’s at www.ramadan.qa

TO HEAVEN AND BACK!

We take you on a quick escape into a luxurious oasis of wellness in Qatar to experience the sublime effects of a traditional Moroccan-style ritual. BY MARISELA PAESANO

T

he Moroccan Bath popularly known as “Hamam Maghrabi” is an age old traditional cleansing ritual practiced by the Moroccans, which is popular across the Middle East. This ritual is done to clean, whiten and soften the skin. It also helps to relax the body, improve blood circulation and release stress. What’s even better? You can indulge in it right here in Doha. We visit Elements Spa at Al Jasra Boutique Hotel situated in the distinctive atmosphere of Souq Waqif to experience the Hamam Maghrabi first-hand.

The Moroccan Hammam it begins with a 10-minute sauna to relieve tension and open pores for skin to be cleansed. We are then guided into the typical Moroccan bathroom, where we are treated to an invigorating massage using Moroccan soap, a black olive soap in semi- solid gel form. We are then allowed to sit in the bathroom for 10 minutes allowing the steam to open up all the body pores. This is the zenith moment when the soap starts to work, clean and soften the skin. And softens the whole skin. The olive soap penetrates the skin, making it soft and ready to exfoliate. After a thorough rinse with warm water, we are ready for an exfoliation scrub that is done using black hand-made exfoliating gloves also known as loofah to scrub off any dead skin and dirt. Soon after, a body masque is applied, which is

ABODE June FINAL.indd 51

made from a product called Ghassoul- an organic cosmetic clay found beneath the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This clay is rich in natural minerals such as Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, Potassium and Sodium. It has beautifying, healing and pacifying effects. The body masque is left on the skin for approximately 10 minutes, allowing the body’s impurities to rise to the surface. The room is once again filled with hot steam and the masque is rinsed off with warm water. The Moroccan Hammam ritual ends with the application of a body lotion that leaves you feeling completely refreshed and clean. BENEFITS • Reduces body temperature, helps stimulate the thyroid and maintain a healthy heart rate. • Promotes pain relief, aids in the elimination of toxins and helps replenish the body with essential minerals • Detoxification eliminates toxins and polluting agents through perspiration • Improves skin elasticity and clarity • Rehydrates skin and soothes redness and flakiness Moroccan Hammam; QR 550 / 60 minutes For more Information contact Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels Tel: 4433 6878 or e-mail: spa@swbh.com

Classy Bun Hairstyles for Ramadan Evenings

It is for a reason that we call it the Crowning Glory. Gorgeous hair is probably the best accessory that a woman can sport no matter the occasion. Needless to say, there are several ways to do up your hair to suit the mood, and may we say, great looking hair is what makes an outfit look complete. So, this Ramadan, don’t be afraid to experiment. This time around we take a closer look at the classic “Bun” style ABODE brings you some great styling tips from the General Manager and Hairstylist of LPG EndermoSpa & Beauty Center. Three super easy-to-do bun hairstyles, and a blend of gorgeous girly to high-class styles will leave you looking and feeling gorgeous. STYLING TIPS FROM ANA SI SABER, HAIRSTYLIST OF LPG ENDEMOSPA & BEAUTY CENTER

BALLERINA BUN Tie your hair up into a tight and smooth high ponytail. For a quick and easy routine, use the round “donut” – place it at the root of your ponytail. Now, working through sections of the ponytail, wrap the hair around the donut securing it with hair pins. Smooth and fix the hair with a final spray of Kerastase 'Laque Couture. This style works for any occasion just like the little black dress.

ROMANTIC, LOW CURLY BUN Make a side partition on the front of your head, curl your hair, and tie it all up into one low side ponytail. Don’t make it too tight. The hair must look loose on the sides. Now, working through small sections of your curled hair from the ponytail, take each section from bottom to the top of the ponytail and fix it using hair pins all around the pony tail until you have a nice, round bun. This will give your bun volume and creates the perfect low bun with just enough curls for that romantic feel.

BRAIDED LOW BUN Make two sections of your hair- front and back. Work on the hair at the back to create a tight ponytail. Then do a low bun and secure it with a few hair pins. Now create a large loose braid with the hair at the front, gently tugging the hair with your fingers to give it some volume. Run the braid along the side brining it down to the root of your low bun at the back. Voila! This style is so easy and works for an evening out or a casual laid-back look!

during daytime? Why or why not?

A.

Absolutely! Smokey eye makeup can be played up or down. Use softer colours for daytime and leave out a dramatic liner. Work with your eye colour and choose a flattering soft shade. Brown eyes look amazing with lilacs or golds, blue eyes are nice with chocolate and moss greens, for green eyes use violet or amber.

to perfect Q.How smokey eye makeup?

A.

A smokey eye makeup is the go-to evening look for women everywhere. It can be subtle or dramatic, have intense colour or just a hint of the classic grey. There are many variations to this look including smokey cateye, smokey cut-crease and smokey arabian eye styles. The basic technique to practice is eyeshadow blending. Begin by concentrating the darkest colour closest to the lash line top and bottom and blend the colour out away from this line until it fades to nothing.

Q.

What are the different smokey eye looks I can create?

A.

The four main variations to a smokey eye are the classic smokey which is dark from lashes and lid blended out to a soft fade above the visible socket line and around the natural eye shape. The cat eye smokey concentrates the smokey colour from a cat eyeliner shape normally with a more natural lid and socket. A cut-crease smokey eye look is a lighter lid with the smokey eye starting from the socket line.

A TREAT FOR THE SENSES BY DARIANA PINEIRO

“A perfume is an invisible, yet an unforgettable accessory”- Coco Chanel.

F

or years now, scores of fragrance collections have been battling for their success with the use of unique materials to create some of the most amazing olfactory experiences. No wonder then, that we are always trying to find our own perfect scent – something that is in tune with our personality, and has a smell that lingers on, be it floral, fruity, herbal, oriental or wood. In recognizing this, Lalique have created a personal series of fragrances that celebrates their history and identity. Utterly refreshing, the collection Lalique Noir Premier showcases five unique fragrances whose names and inspirations are drawn from the brand’s rich heritage to honour the creators, styles and individual pieces. Each fragrance is packaged in bottle that dates back to the “very first black perfume bottle designed by René Lalique in 1911: the Quatre Aigles bottle” and forms the Roman numeral “I”. Features of the bottle include: four eagles finely sculpted on its edges, engraved wings in the transparent crystal, being a creation for the renowned French perfumer François Coty, and an impeccable, delicate design with Lalique’s “Swallows” emblem engraved on the cap. The name of each the fragrances is written in gold letters on the left side, while the year of inspiration and the name of the collection are written on the face of the bottle. It is presented in a black coffer with chamois to blend a conservative style with the glamorous quotient.

ROSE ROYALE 1935 The notes: Peach, Apricot, Rose Absolute, Osmanthus, Cashmere Woo, Musk his spectacular creation was born in one of the most prestigious streets of Paris “RUE ROYALE” where Rene Lalique inaugurated his new store in 1935. Lalique thought of the queen of flowers "the rose" and compared it to Paris because it is the queen of the cities. TERRES AROMATIQUES 1905 The notes: Lemon, Cardamom, Lavandin, Vetyver, Pineapple, Freesia, Tryme, Orcanox, Tonka bean in 1905 fragrances were sold in handmade bottles and they were very expensive, the prestigious French perfumer Francois Coty had the idea that an elegant fragrance deserved a simple and striking bottle; Rene Lalique found he could make glass products based on low-cost. Thanks to this merge the Terres Aromatiques was born, in honor to these two artists with an excellent mix between. FLEUR UNIVERSELLE 1900 The notes: Pink pepper, Rum, Cardamom, Everlasting flower, Myrrh, Cinnamon, Tonka bean, Lorenox, Patchouli. Q.

I think I’m addicted to social media. Even when I’m with people, I’m glued to my phone, following celebrities or reading fashion or relationships blogs. I never get anything done. I can’t stop because I think I’m going to miss something.

A.

Living in the information age of 2015, we are often forced to respond automatically, (without conscious thinking), to constant updates which can desensitise you. However, it’s easy to forget that we humans are still huge creatures of habit. We don’t change as quickly as the world moves. Any habits, (good or bad), can quickly become hardwired. Therefore, the problem isn’t that you use the internet, but the reasons why? Everybody is vulnerable to weak moments, i.e. using social media for procrastination or for validation from others. However, too much of anything can be bad for us. Some people even get ‘phantom vibration syndrome’, thinking there’s been an alert on your phone but there hasn’t. If this happens to you, you need to act. It’s hard now to imagine a world without the internet. People place huge importance on things like social media. Some are even emotionally dependent on it. Being ‘logged in’ is so easy that many people become anxious when they can’t do so. To break such habits you must question your usage. Write down how much time you actually use it and set realistic goals to cut your social media use slowly. Don’t pressure yourself, but your goals need to be challenging. Set small daily tasks and reward yourself away from the internet when completed. You’ll soon see you aren’t missing much.

Q.

I’ve always lacked confidence and selfesteem. However, in the last year I was lucky to land my dream job, meet my loving husband and have a beautiful son. I don’t want this to end, but worry everything will go wrong and back to normal.

A.

Was it luck or did you contribute to these things happening? When life is good, a common error is to ignore negative things and focus on being optimistic and maintaining the positive. This makes sense, however, for some people, this can just be ‘papering over the cracks’. The reality: life is full of inevitable ups and downs. We need to be prepared for both. We should acquire enough skills and experience to make the good times last longer and the bad to end as quickly as we can. The more skills the better. In your situation, your current happy state may distract you from your lack of confidence and self-esteem. However, it still remains in the back of your mind; unless you address it. When life is enjoyable you may think all your worries are solved. However, when the inescapable problems arise i.e. with your job or relationship, your personal issues will reveal themselves again causing more anxiety. Most people react after bad things happen and then seek help. You’ve been proactive trying to prevent issues while things are going well. This is the best way. Your positive frame should provide a productive platform to build from. Speaking to a professional or taking classes can help you improve your self-esteem. This will help you to deal with the hard times more effectively and maintain your positive life for longer.

Q.

I am hoping to get married in the future. I just have a simple question. What do men look for in a potential wife?

A.

Marriage is a great thing, however, people who cater themselves solely to the wants or desires of another are making a big mistake. First of all, no man is exactly the same; influenced by their age, culture and social backgrounds. However, as humans we all desire companionship, understanding, respect, commitment and emotional connection. Each man will look for different characteristics within this. So rather than focus on what men want, you should consider your own qualities. Men like having people around that understand and respect them. They appreciate women who are emotionally available and in control of this. Instability leads to confusion and consequently conflict. Most men like calming influences in their lives. Consider what makes you a good companion? We all have our own stories, but often lack true understanding of our own self and behaviours. Therefore if you lack this, how can you explain it clearly to somebody else? A strong self-identity is important. A woman who is not dependent on the opinions or expectations of others, has a clearer sense of self; and is extremely appealing. This will attract the right kind of people to you. Then you, and your chosen partner, can decide whether your qualities and characteristics complement each other…together.

MAKING YOUR TRAINING COUNT

BY ADAM KHALID

What you do outside the gym is just as important!

E

ver feel like you’re not getting the results as fast as you had thought? Maybe it’s time to take a step back and see what else you should be doing. So, you’ve gone out and spent the money on the gym or class memberships or the extremely knowledgeable personal trainer who has you exhausted after every session. You are seeing progress in your fitness and have dropped a few kilos while seeing a difference in your body shape. However, you thought it would be a faster process. Let me tell you that how you live your life outside the four walls of the gym is just as important as what you do inside that sweat box, and making a few small adjustments will have you seeing more rapid differences. Here are some simple tips that you can begin to implement, which with time will become second nature and eventually, won’t seem like a chore.

1. EAT CLEAN

The biggest mistake I see in people that have taken a giant leap into training is that their diet remains the same. They train intensely in the gym only to go home via the McDonalds drive thru or indulge in fatty, processed foods because they feel they have earned it. However, you must be careful that it doesn’t amount to a reward every time you complete a good workout. If it does, then you are wasting time and money. Limit yourself to one (whatever it is you like) a week or one every two 2 weeks for that matter. If coke is your poison then you’re allowed one can at the weekends.

After a few weeks make it one every two weeks and so on. Eventually you will stop all together not because you want to but you will lose the taste and need for it. Trust me I’m speaking from personal experience. Studies have shown that if you cut something out all together dramatically, you’re more likely to crave it.

60

ABODE June FINAL.indd 60

26/05/15 14:42

2. CLEAR OUT

If it’s not there you won’t have it. Look through your cupboards and fridge, and get rid of unhealthy food or drink. Don’t be tempted to pick it up again on your next shopping trip. Make a healthy shopping list, and stick to it. That way, if you veer of the list you know you’re reaching for something you shouldn’t have and are less likely to purchase it.

3. GET VALUE FOR MONEY

Have you paid for a personal trainer? Then use them to your full advantage. They should already be instructing you and feeding you advice in every session on what you should be doing outside the gym. If they aren’t, ask them for tips or get a new trainer. This mentor is the perfect person to keep you on track. Send them pictures of healthy foods you are eating, workouts you have completed when not in his/ her presence. Even a small text like, ‘’ I climbed 5 flights of stairs today’’ will first of all remind yourself that you are making a lifestyle change, and it will give you that motivation and encouragement to continue to make small changes. Your personal trainer should be on your back to change the way you live and not just count your sit- ups. If you don’t have a personal trainer, then find a friend who is doing the same, and be motivation to one and other.

4. UP AND AWAY

Which brings me to my next piece of advice; climb stairs. Today, many of us have succumed to lethargy and automatically opt for the lift or the escalator. It’s only a few floors and only takes a few minutes extra out of your time. If you feel out of breath climbing up a few sets of stairs you are dangerously unfit, which means you must definitely be avoiding lifts or escalators. Climbing stairs is free, it will increase your cardiovascular endurance as well as your muscular endurance in your legs. This goes for walking too. Especially in this city we have become so dependent on our cars. The lack of public transport also limits us to even walk to the bus stop. So I ask you, when you can, please walk. I see too many families In Katara getting carried about in golf buggies. Be an example for your children.

ABODE June FINAL.indd 61

5. MIX IT UP AND STRETCH!

Train outside of your set times. There are so many things that you can do in the comfort of your own home or in a nearby spacious area e.g., park. Add in that extra session even if it’s for half an hour and it will begin to speed up the process. Some ideas: go for a 30 minute run, body weight exercises in the morning before jumping in the shower (press ups, sit ups, squats), invest in a piece of equipment you enjoy using so you have no excuse not to work out at home (TRX, Kettle bell, Strength bag etc.), workout videos, try different fitness classes. It doesn’t even have to be that demanding. Including a 45 minute home session of yoga or stretching into your week will greatly benefit you when performing exercises in the gym (stretching is so important to having flexibility in your muscles and avoiding injury – you must stretch everyday!).

6. REMINDERS MAKE HABITS!

My final piece of advice as always is write stuff down and keep it visible. On your phone, on your wall, on the fridge etc. A constant reminder that you are doing these things and it’s not just an idea that eventually disappears from your already busy mind.

Do these small things, and you will become a success inside and outside the gym!

THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN:

WORKOUT AND TIPS

The Holy Month of Ramadan is fast approaching and Muslims all over the world fast during that month, from sunrise to sunset. Fasting and exercising during Ramadan can be a challenge; however not exercising will be a much harder challenge, because it can set you back about 3 to 4 months’ worth of exercise!

BY ALINA ANDREI, HEALTH CLUB MANAGER MODEL NISRIN KHALIFEH C/O TRINITY TALENTS QATAR PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAAD LOCATION AT MÖVENPICK HOTEL WEST BAY DOHA

If you are worried about gaining weight during this month and would like to control your calorie intake, we have prepared few tips and exercises to assist you:

1. DUMBBELL SQUAT Keep your feet shoulder-apart and hold one dumbbell in each hand. Hold your elbows in a 90 degree angle and the dumbbells just above your ear line. Perform half squat and hold for few seconds then return to initial position. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

2. SUPERMAN Lay down on your tummy face down and your arms and legs stretched. While inhaling, raise your arms and legs as high as possible, then exhale and slowly return to the initial position. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

62

ABODE June FINAL.indd 62

26/05/15 14:42

3. DOLPHIN PLANK Lay face down while keeping your forearms on the floor and raise your hips to come in low plank position. Inhale while you lift your hips to create an inverted “V” shape and exhale while returning to initial position. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

4. DUMBELL DEADLIFTS Keep your feet and shoulder apart and hold one dumbbell with both hands. Perform half squat while holding the dumbbell, hold for few seconds and then return to initial position. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

OUR TIPS: • During Ramadan the main aim should be to maintain the weight and not to aim for a low calorie diet as this will end up making your body even weaker. • Do train at night and avoid workouts while fasting. • Avoid training at your normal intensity as during the month of fasting, your body will be more dehydrated than usual and working out on a high intensity level when dehydrated will have detrimental effects on your body. • Break your fast with protein and carb-rich food. However, keep an eye on the calorie intake as well and keep your portions small to moderate size. Don’t forget that when you fast your stomach also becomes smaller and it’s not healthy to break the fast with large meal portions. • Drink lots of water during the night, around 2.5L to keep the body hydrated. • The best time to do your workout is after Taraweeh prayer, when your body has had enough hydration before the exercise. Another good option is to start your exercise 1 hour after Iftar, as a quick 30 minutes workout. If you can wake-up before Suhoor you can also do a quick 30 minute cardio workout, provided that you drink plenty of water before. Make sure you wait half an hour and then do the cardio exercise. • If you suffer from any chronic disease, injury or complications it is always better to seek advice from your doctor or your physician about exercising and fasting.

Before the start of Ramadan it is better to plan your workout routine, to ensure you maintain a healthy body and a sharp mind. This will surely make it easier to control the cravings and help with the fasting.

DECORATING IDEAS-SHOPPING-INTERIOR DESIGNERS' TIPS

BLACK ORCHID INTERIORS Renowned for its place within London’s Interior Design circle of high end clients, Black Orchid Interiors is excited to make its debut in Qatar. The brand brings ‘opulence’ and ‘tailored elegance ’ through statement accessories and furniture. BOI enjoys a fair share of Qatari customers in UK, and is a direct reflection of its popularity.

Style It Up! BY UJWALA THIRUMURTHY

Turn your home into a work of art with unique creations that lend a whole new meaning to home decor.

T

he colour and design of a home should be the reflection of the people who live inside. It should be a place that reflects your personality, style, and emotions. Rustic, modern, classic, contemporary, regal – whatever type of design and décor, it should be an expression of the self.

Sally Chamley AT BLACK ORCHID “INTERIORS, WE PRODUCE TRADITIONAL FURNITURE AT ITS ROYAL BEST, AND THAT CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE QATARI PEOPLE SALLY CHAMLEY

Taking design and stylized living to the next level is Black Orchid Interiors, UK’s famous luxury furniture brand with its flagship franchise store in the Middle East at The PearlQatar . Known for its opulence and glamour quotient, the BOI specializes in bringing high-end designer trends to clients for modernist apartments to classic period homes. Speaking to ABODE, Founder Black Orchid Interiors, Sally Chamley gave us interesting insights into the making of statement pieces of design and décor for a niche market. The fusion of traditional design with contemporary detailing on products is perhaps the most important reflection of the Middle-eastern style. “In Qatar, it’s the appetite for lavishness that sells the brand and its unique identity so well, which is why it is the perfect place to have our first store. At Black Orchid Interiors, we produce traditional furniture at its royal best,

68

ABODE June FINAL.indd 68

and that captures the essence of the Qatari people. We also plan to introduce Qatari colours that are so rich and vivid, into our products to make it more authentic”, says Ms Chamley. When you think of design, there are a million images that conjure up in the mind. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is the method of putting form and content together to make it functional. Design is so simple, that’s why it’s so complicated. But what makes Black Orchid Interiors unique is the tailored, symmetric look with a balance of the classy and the contemporary, as well a business strategy that is in tune with the brand’s identity. “While designing a piece, I always tell my team to follow the brand’s signature look. If it doesn’t fit in, then we discard the idea and start over. For me the ‘Brand’ is everything. Before a decision is made, the impact on the brand is considered first.” Little wonder then that even a regular piece of dining room furniture is transformed into something ravishing with just this one philosophy. Black, and neutral colours play a huge role in defining the brand with punches of colour that make it engaging and hard-to-resist. That being said, one cannot ignore the fact that the name itself suggests a contrasting balance of the old with the new. “Black Orchid” symbolizes the soft and the sharp, wood and metal, black and white, smooth and rough. Black is universal; it symbolizes the strong, bold look while the orchid symbolizes the delicate and rich look. “The name resonates with any area of life,” says Ms Chamley who attributes her initial interests in design to the many splendid five-star hotels with dramatic, plush décor that she stayed in while vacationing with her parents.

“I was always interested in property development, but I was overwhelmed by the design and architecture of some magnificent hotels, and decided that I wanted to go down the same path. It wasn’t an easy beginning, but thanks to a outstanding business model, the company has grown leaps and bounds ever since it was established”, she exclaims. Given the brand’s focus on luxury, The Pearl-Qatar was an obvious choice – a stunning development that houses all the best international brands. A successful name in the UK, Black Orchid Interiors already enjoys a fair share of Qatari customers living there, and is a direct reflection of its popularity. So, if you have a discerning eye for a décor that spells opulence in every way, you’ve come to the right place. Exquisite home furniture ranging from quartz mirrored console tables to elegant ebony chairs and statement pieces, Black Orchid Interiors has it all to turn your home into a royal abode or a contemporary dwelling space. If you love surrounding yourself with sumptuous furnishings and rich colors, Arabic style decorating gives you the perfect combination of luxury, comfort, and wanderlust. Pep up your mood this summer by bringing home some dazzling Arabic décor with exotic panache.

GET TO KNOW THE HISTORY

Arabic interior design has really evolved over the centuries and blended with Islamic décor and architecture with influences from the Mediterranean region. Styles from the Greek, French, Spanish, and Italian have all been churned together to create a luxurious and exotic mix. The designs usually focus on several themes from rustic, Bedouin-style, and our favorite lavish “Arabian Nights,” palace-style interiors.

2

ADD A GOLDEN TOUCH The color gold is one of the most used colors in the Middle East and represents luxury, royalty, and power. It’s also a way of displaying a higher social status and cultural elite. The use of gold in Arab culture reflects good hospitality making you and your guests feel as valuable as gold! You can incorporate this metallic trend into your home with gold leaf, thin sheets of gold that you can apply to the accents on your furniture. Gold wall moldings and lighting fixtures such as chandeliers or wall scones will also give you the luxurious look we love in the Middle East.

70

ABODE June FINAL.indd 70

26/05/15 14:42

3

CHOOSE LOW PROFILE FURNITURE When it comes to traditional Arabic culture, the furniture consists mainly of low-profile chairs, tables and chests. The chests were used to store different things in the room and tables were not used. Instead, food and drinks were brought on copper or brass trays. If you want to use furniture make sure to choose dark wood furniture with intricate and geometric designs. Embellished and intricate carved furniture like chests, small low tables, boxes, divider screens and even carved doors look gorgeous and outlandish.

4

USE SPICY COLORS Warm and strong colors like red, cinnamon, crimson, plum, orange, and yellow are hallmarks of true Arabic design. Use these colors throughout your whole home on sofas, chairs, pillows, and your table setting and even for carpets and walls. To pep-up your finished look, consider sprinkling a hint of cool colors like turquoise and sparkling hues of emerald green. You can also use a brighter hue like Moroccan red or burnt orange as an accent wall for an injection of color.

5

INSERT SOME ZING WITH TEXTILES The rich diversity of patterns, prints, and textures are probably one of the most important elements of Arabic decorating. To really put a stamp on your newly designed home, use layers of Persian rugs, colorful pillows, floor cushions, runners, curtains, and even wall tapestries. Drape fabrics over walls and ceilings to create a tent-like effect and layer fabrics over tables, benches, or frame them as wall art. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns with stripes, zigzags, calligraphy and geometric designs to really shake things up!

FLAVORS OF VIETNAM BY JORGE GRANDA PHOTOGRAPHS BY BAIBA JAKUBAITE

The ever-hip Spice Market inspired by Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s time in the Far-East is introducing a Vietnamese night. Every Sunday, Patrons will be enchanted by the adventurous flavors of one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. The Vietnamese cuisine features a combination of five different fundamental tastes as it is influenced by the Asian principle of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). Now, you can try this exotic cuisine at the Spice Market in the W Hotel. Spice Market is, by far, one of the best restaurants in town. Not only is the food fantastic, but the design is as captivating and inviting as the delicious dishes on offer. There is no doubt that Jean-

Georges started a movement for stylish dining in Doha as the Spice Market takes Asian dĂŠcor to a whole new level of sophistication. Apart from their exquisite regular menu, the restaurant is now introducing a Vietnamese Night every Sunday. The menu has everything that you can expect from the Far-East Asian restaurant and more. All dishes are full of flavors and spices and prepared with some of the typical ingredients such as fish sauce,

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's

lemon grass, shrimp paste, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables. You can start your meal with a Grilled Squid, Fennel and Cucumber Salad, and Peanut Brittle. The baby squid is marinated with fish sauce and vinegar, a bit of garlic and chili. After being marinated, the chef puts them on the char grill and pairs them with finely sliced fennel and cucumbers. It is finally tossed together and topped with spiced caramelized peanuts. Another starter

we recommend is the Crispy Fried Tofu, Coconut Chili Slaw, Ginger Lime. The ginger lime sweet and sour sauce is a flavorful combination with the freshness of the pickled onion on top. Or you can also go for the Chicken and Shrimp Imperial Rolls, Nuoc Cham. This new take on the typical spring rolls is particularly tasty and flavorsome. The chef chops the shrimp and chicken and then mixes them together, but instead of the traditional spring roll pastry, he uses the rice paper and fries it, so the rice paper is crispy. The spring rolls are served with lettuce. The combination of the fresh lettuce and the crispy rice paper, dipped in nouc cham, makes it a superb starter. But, if you prefer a soup to start your meal, then we would recommend the Oxtail and Shaved We Beef Pho. The beef pho is a traditional soup broth that it is

usually served for breakfast. The delicious fragrance of the broth combined with the fresh herbs, mint, basil, cilantro, bean sprouts, rice noodles and chili with shaved pieces of beef makes this soup a good choice at any time of the day. For the main course we recommend the Jumbo Prawn and Pineapple Curry. This dish is absolutely magnificent- what a delight. The dish in general has a good level of spice that works perfectly well with the sweet flavor of the sauce. The coconut-based spiced curry broth and ginger cucumber salad balances out the spiciness of the curry and with the prawns it makes a beautiful combination. The prawns are juicy and tender. It is a standout dish. Even though it is not part of the Vietnamese Night menu, we recommend

Crispy Fried Tofu

the crispy shredded crab roll. Contrary to the name of the dish, what you get is heaven on a plate. The crab, eel and shrimp are wrapped in rice and seaweed, lightly coated in tempura batter and then deep-fried to a firm crunch.

There’s something to satisfy every palate, from rich coffee to freshly baked bread and mouth-watering homemade ice-cream. We stopped by this trendy coffee shop for a quick lunch and were surprised by the variety and quality of the menu. From wood-fired pizzas, decadent sandwiches, freshly baked bread, and home-made quiche, the options are endless. We started our lunch with two appetizers: Caribbean salad- a super fresh and generous portion of mixed greens, tomatoes, hearts of palm, red onion, spiced croutons and cilantro vinaigrette, and Motuleños - crispy corn tortillas, filled with Mexican flavors; refried beans, avocado, halloumi, turkey ham and wood oven roasted tomato sauce. For our main course we opted for the El Torito; a classic South American beef burger with Monterrey jack cheese, chimichurri mayo, onions, tomatoes, and a fried egg on sesame bun. We also tried a freshly baked spinach quiche. Of course, we couldn’t miss desserts, and at Quick Bites there are plenty of options.

We first tried a Raspberry Delight Crepe, a super yummy crepe filled with raspberry, mascarpone, raspberry coulis and cookie crumble, and ended it in style with three all-time favorites from the French cakes counter: chocolate mousse, lemon tart and strawberry macaroon. To refresh ourselves and beat the heat, we gave the special mocktails a try: classy but super delicious Lemon with Mint, and Red Passion. The coffee shop also houses a photography gallery by artist Maria Ovsyannikova (all photographs for sale) where you can spend some time before or after you’ve enjoyed your meal. Standing majestically at Westbay Lagoon, The Ritz-Carlton Doha is a picture of a confident icon in Doha.

K

nown worldwide for its trademark hospitality, Ritz Carlton welcomes us into the lavish stay-cation. The hotel has 374 rooms that are equally aesthetic as their building. Each room is a mirror of its traditional luxury where anyone instantly feels at home.

THE CHECK- IN EXPERIENCE The impeccably dressed hotel staff gave us the Red carpet welcome. On giving our reservation at the reception, the guest officer guided us to their Club Lounge. The view of the Arabian Sea was just gorgeous from our room on the 26th Floor. THE ROOM The rooms designed for luxury and comfort makes you want to stay in bed all day long! We relaxed in the blissful comfort of fine linens and comfortable bedding (snuggly pillows too!). You would want to renovate your own bedroom after staying here.

THE LAGOON RESTAUR ANT

Another unforgettable experience at The RitzCarlton, Doha is the family brunch at The Lagoon. Aside from their enjoyable food like their sushi bar, desserts and their delectable main course dishes one thing you will be amazed at is the ambience of the place! With a background of light music and cosy lighting the whole place is simply perfect! You cant help but have a good time with loved ones! LaMer Restaurant

The Lagoon Restaurant

La Mer RESTAUR ANT

No one really does it like La Mer! This fine dining french restaurant only opens at afternoon for tea and at night for dinner. They ensure guests experience a true gastronomic journey.

For afternoon tea, they made it more dramatic by asking their guests what flavour they want by letting them smell sample flavours, it was served then in beautiful porcelain with yummy canapĂŠs. It was very visible that the canapĂŠs were carefully chosen to enjoy your cup of tea with a breathtaking view atop from the 23rd floor! Dinner at La Mer starts at 8 pm, the ambiance of cosiness from afternoon tea is now completely different, as it blossoms into sophistication. The no-kids policy allows everyone to enjoy a private and peaceful dinner. We experienced the Bling Tasting, a five course dinner by the Chef. Chef William personally came to our table to ask us about possible allergies and our preferences to the food. What we noticed was Chef William Khala expertly played on our taste buds by giving us pre-appetizers that allowed us to enjoy the following dishes in the course. The only complaint we had was a full tummy just as we entered our second main course, but no one can really refuse a dessert! They really made sure that we enjoyed our food, another one for the book experience!

BARS AND LOUNGE

The Ritz-Carlton Doha is also famous for its lounges and bars, Head to the Habanos Lounge for some cuban music and a good crowd. If you want more privacy and feeling a little fun will do, we will totally recommend their newest bar which is Level 23 Bar. Subtle dim lights and warm ambiance got our vote for this newbie in town!

THE SPA

The lavish spa at the RitzCarlton Spa caters both men and women. It is everything a couple could wish for! A 30-min massage and a 60-min facial costs only QAR 600/-. NEW YORK is always a good idea…

WORDS AND SELECTED IMAGES BY LYNSEY RIACH

Capsuled on board an aeroplane for 14 hours with a 7hr time difference upon arrival might seem like a bit of an effort for a City escape, but once you set foot in the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, you’ll know it is the best travel choice you’ve made.

W

ell, I did manage to convince myself of this fact at 2am as I lay wide awake smack back in what felt like the centre of the Universe – Times Square. I can certainly vouch for that whole ‘City that never sleeps thing’; perhaps it was the time difference, the jet lag, the utter excitement to get out and explore this mammoth island, or it was just the sound of emergency sirens all night long and the bright lights of Times Square beaming

through my blackout blinds. Either way, I lay there soaking it all up, as this was an integral part of the New York City experience. Surviving on a few hours’ sleep each night didn’t seem to take its toll as I buzzed about all day and all night taking in a bite of that Big Apple. Staying at my favourite hotel brand, The W (Times Square) it looks, acts and smells just like that of the signature W brand set in an enviable location that leads you

90

ABODE June FINAL.indd 90

26/05/15 14:44

straight out the front door into the heart of it all. Times Square is the heartbeat of Manhattan. Set in the theater district, with many of the City’s renowned museums a few blocks North and downtown just a quick subway ride away, New York is everything you imagine it to be, but the pulse of this City makes you feel alive (even at 2am). With a myriad sights within easy reach of the hotel, you can pop back to your room later in the day to ditch all those shopping bags you’ve accumulated from nearby Macys or Saks Fifth Avenue. The hotel isn’t up there with some of the other properties I’ve stayed at in the same chain, but this newest New York branch (1 of 4 in Manhattan) delivers big on location, along with those small W touches and that signature W bed (and with Hersheys chocolate world right next door, you can guess where the chocolates on your pillow come from..) Taking NYC in mostly on foot, I offer to you some multi-tasking here: active sightseeing, which means you can justify having that extra slice of New York cheesecake! To prove my point, I’ll tell you that each day of my 4 day trip I wore on my wrist, my Fitbit fitness tracker clocking up a staggering 17kms-25kms each day. Stop for a coffee or a bagel from a street vendor, enjoy a pretzel and, if you’re a little daring, maybe a hot dog or two…

But before you get started on this active stay, begin your morning like most Americans do - with Good Morning America filmed at the ABC studios in the heart of Times Square where you can wave to your Mom on camera and perhaps see a celebrity or two. Crowds gather early from 7am but you can pretty much always catch a glimpse of the famous faces that beam into millions of homes in both the States and here in Qatar (available on OSN). After you’ve had your five minutes of fame, get fuelled up for a day of walking and wandering starting with a hearty breakfast bagel from Pick a Bagel (53rd & 54th/8th Ave). Like most popular NYC food institutions, there tends to be a line outside the store. This place has every king of bagel on offer with every kind of filling you’re guaranteed to change your mind 12 times just as you wait to order.

rowboat and row out to the middle of the lake to just stop and take in that skyline all around you.

From there hop back over 2 blocks and stroll up 6th Avenue passing the iconic Radio City for a retro photo opportunity (if you like choreographed dance troupes then visit here later to watch the world famous Rockettes dance their beautiful hearts out). Keep on North until you hit the vast greenery that is, Central Park. This sprawling giant garden is where New Yorkers go to run, walk their dogs and escape the towering skyscrapers overhead. For tourists it provides a little Zen with a leisurely stroll to boot. Skip the horse and carts on offer and head towards the Boat House, where you can hire a

After you’ve treated yourself to something shiny and new, enjoy a traditional afternoon tea at The St. Regis located on 55th & 5th. Set in the King Cole Bar, you can scoff your scones whilst marvelling at the Maxfield Parish Mural of ‘Old King Cole’ that holds a secret only the artist and trusted staff of the hotel know about.

Thanks to the antics of Kevin McAllister in Home Alone 2, The Plaza Hotel is now frequented by tourists due to its location directly across from Central Park. Take a tour, if you like, before heading down the best known shopping district in the world – Fifth Avenue. If you’re into technology, then start with Apple’s giant store (open 24/7, 365 days) that sits next door to another movie-made-famous icon – FAO Schwarz from the movie, Big. And yes the giant keyboard is still there and yes, you can play it like a big kid. But if you prefer more of the shinier, prettier things in life, then a trip to the wonder that is Tiffany & Co. is a must. Beautiful on the outside and the inside, this sprawling store has all the diamonds that Tiffany has to offer.

Heading on back down Fifth Avenue for perhaps that afternoon nap you’ve felt your eyes dream about, you’ll have to put it on hold and gasp at the sheer height of the Rockefeller Center. Buy a ticket and head to Top of the Rock for THE best views

of Manhattan where you can take in the beauty of The Empire State Building at the same time try to spot Lady Liberty in the distance and the all new One World Trade Center. After a quick turnaround at the hotel, head on out for dinner at Chelsea Markets in the trendy Meatpacking District where you can choose from all kinds of eateries open late, late into the night. So far, I’ve kept you walking the City, but for this next must-see spot, you will need to travel by boat to The Statue of Liberty. A symbol of the American dream, the Island is undoubtedly top of your list, but book your tickets in advance especially if you’d like to hike up to view Manhattan from her crown, because visiting this lovely lady sells out pretty quick. It’s time then, to lace up those comfortable shoes again and make your way back uptown through Wall Street stopping off for a photo op next to the famous Charging Bull right next to the New York Stock Exchange. From there, head North through Little Italy stopping for a delicious slice of pizza pie at Joe’s

Pizza (Carmine St/Bleecker St), and then continue up to Chinatown, SoHo, TriBeCa and Greenwhich Village where quirky cafes and even quirkier stores pull you in for the rest of your day. If you can manage it, indulge in a red velvet cupcake from the ever so cute and homely Magnolia Bakery (11th St/Bleeker St). If your feet can handle the pace, keep on trekking back up to Times Square, stopping off at Bryant Park for a much deserved hot chocolate and people- watching before resting your soles at your hotel. At night, Broadway’s bright lights beckon, and luckily there are a variety of shows on offer to suit both adults and children alike. Again, make sure to book in advance, or if you want a cheaper ticket you can line up at the TKTS booth in Times Square to grab a last minute bargain. Of course, there is always food on offer no matter where you are in the City with myriad ethnic foods.

It’s the perfect melting pot of culture, history and modernity, and it all awaits just a flightand-a-half-a-day away.

During summer, NYC sure heats up. It’s a beautiful City to explore with the sun on your skin, and late light nights make it perfect for Baseball season! Take a trip to the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx where you can eat hot dogs, wear a Yankee

When art speaks! BY UJWALA THIRUMURTHY

Meet Jameela Al Shraim, an awe-inspiring Qatari artist, who takes us through the ups and downs of her journey to international fame.

Y

ou can never appreciate a work of art fully until you learn about the artist, better still meet them. You may have never held a paint brush all your life, but the energy that comes from such a rendezvous is enough to make you want to gather all the art supplies you can get and let your imagination work.

Meeting Jameela Al Shraim was nothing short of a journey into the life of a Qatari woman who has strived to keep her work alive ever since she took to painting at the age of 11. Until recently in 2012, society was not as liberal as to allow its women folk to even paint outside their own homes, as a means of protecting them. But, harsh societal laws bothered Jameela the least. “I took to painting as a form of entertainment, because I never had any fancy, expensive toys to play with. For me, painting was a way of letting go, and I never gave up”, says Jameela who has been a member of the Qatar Fine Arts Society since 1985. “Back in the 1980s, it was difficult to find art material so I worked with wood, painted it white and used it as the canvas. There were no acrylic paints either, so I borrowed cooking oil from my mother to mix with paint and create a medium to express myself”, she recollects. Despite the fact that women weren’t even allowed to sign their names on the paintings, Jameela beams with pride while talking about her mother and

Jameela Al Shraim

her husband who have always supported and encouraged her while. So, what does art truly mean? “Anyone can paint. But an artist is someone who makes the audience see and feel what’s hidden in the painting. Only a true artist can translate his emotions on canvas and pass on that emotion to the person who sees it”, says Jameela. Being the first Qatari woman to have participated in the Qatari-Italian Exhibition "Asalat Khail" held in Venice, 2015, Jameela is a perfect blend of confidence, and humility. Speaking about the inspiration behind her works of art, she introduces the Horse. “The horse is a symbol of strength, passion, feminity, and etiquette all at once. It is powerful yet feminine, graceful yet strong. It also has mythical references to Arab civilization and Western culture”, says Jameela, who uses green as a predominant colour to reflect hope, and life. An hour into our conversation, and I’m reminded of this quote by an unknown author -“Reality is wrong. Dreams are for real”. Because, it is through her dreams that Jameela creates art that is a reflection of the person she is. “Never give up on your dreams. If you think you can, you can”, says Jameela, whose works are

also influenced by the poetic works of the founder of Qatar, Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohamed Al Thani. Graduating in Art Education from Qatar University in 1988, Jameela, a self-taught artist is now well-known in Qatar and abroad for her unique take on culture, and she attributes her first stepping stone towards success to Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, and Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani for recognizing and nurturing women’s talent in Qatar. Her recent exhibition at the Souq Waqif Art center was originally part of a 2014 exhibition at the Porta Coeli International Art Gallery in Italy. Her undying spirit makes Jameela Al Shraim an inspiring example of the welcome change in the arts scene in Qatar. Follow her on facebook for latest updates and photos of her work.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She's even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. 'Jess and Jason', she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy. Compulsively readable, the Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut of the author Paula Hawkins. “Assured and confident..building inescapable tension. The thriller scene will have to up its game if it’s to match Hawkins this year.” – The Observer (UK)
