“Modern Arab Women” travels the world By moona masri whitice

Judith Hornok didn't have the slightest idea she would ever visit any Arab country, that wasn't on her agenda. Today she is the author of the book “Modern Arab Women” and gives worldwide lectures to present “Another Image of the Arab World”. Judith wants to build sustainable trust between the US and the Arab world with her new book. ABODE gets up close and personal with Judith Hornok, in an exclusive interview about her mission in life: "Getting to know each other better is the best investment for the 21st century", and her new book.

Only two months ago, Viennese-born journalist and author Judith Hornok returned from another US-trip, where she spoke at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. telling the unique personal story of the making of her book “Modern Arab Women”. There, she presented her ambition, to build trust between the US and Arab countries. “And it's always the same”, Judith reports, “the American people are amazed how educated and independent women are in the Arab world. There is a lot to do for this market. Many aspects, questions and misunderstandings should be cleared and answered – the American people have the right to get another image of the Arab world!” She admits that 10 years ago her own perception was very one-sided and heavily biased by the media. At that time she was travelling the world as a journalist, covering Formula One racing, business stories, big celebrity profiles, and she didn´t have the

slightest wish to ever visit these Arab countries. Judith never expected to focus her interests on the Gulf countries: “I imagined radical domineering men oppressing women and forcing them to cover themselves. And I didn't have the slightest desire to visit this part of the world”. Years later, fate provided a turning point in Judith's life - by chance she put her foot on Arab soil - in the United Arab Emirates – where she was presented with a very different picture from what she had expected: “Local men treated women with respect”, she tells, “And behind the veils of Muslim women I met fascinating personalities – I got curious”. She took the decision to research the subject further and began visiting the Gulf, spending two weeks there every second month. And with her unconventional personality and journalistic skills at getting a story, she began to form relationships with women of the Gulf states; “I started talking with women in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia. Every day, the number of names and telephone numbers I gathered increased and I met more and more women who went their separate ways professionally. It was then that I decided to write a book about Arab women. And since it was the United Arab Emirates – the first

Arab country that gave me a better insight into the Arab world, I decided to write my book about women of the United Arab Emirates”. The result: “Modern Arab Women – The New Generation of the United Arab Emirates” - a book that offers a fascinating insight of what it's like to be an Arab woman in the 21st century (written in German and English); and accompanied with beautiful full-page expressive photos, which Judith captured with her own camera. “Modern Arab Women” tells of visionaries, personalities who set milestones in their society: business women, artists, movie producers including filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja, or the minister of foreign trade Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi – her story puts a smile on many people´s faces because she shows how women are modern and international, but still keep their culture and tradition. In the book Sheikha Lubna talks about a call she got late one night from Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the present minister of foreign affairs. And on the phone he told her that the country, the United Arab Emirates, wanted her to be the new minister of economy and planning. And then he asked her: “What do you have to say?" And Sheikha Lubna's answer was – you

Judith's book, currently available in Europe and the United Arab Emirates reveals real stories, emotions and their thoughts of pioneers, such as Nahla Al Rostamani's, the country's first female racing driver. “To be different is sometimes weird”, Judith adds with twinkling eyes, “And for sure Nahla Al Rostamani's passion for motorsport caused several reactions in her surroundings. People went to Nahla's mum and dad and kept asking “Why do you let her drive? Is this ok with you?” The pressure was extremely high. In the book Nahla tells: “The guys were

afraid that I could beat them in a race, so they started to criticize me – “the lady should stay at home, it's not nice to be amongst guys, motorsport is a man's world”. But that's not really a very good argument for a strongwilled woman who is so passionate about motorsport, is it?“ So Nahla didn't give up, she kept going – today Nahla is the team relations officer of the Yas Marina Circuit and well-reputed in her own country. “She is part of this new generation who created a new awareness – also for the Western world”, Judith adds. Judith remembers an event she organized last November during the F1 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi where she invited the media working in Formula One to listen to a talk she held with racing-driver Nahla and artist Azza Al Qubaisi – live on stage. “I gave my colleagues food for thought”, she explains. I kept their interest”. And she achieved her goals – media from all over the world attended her talk; the tenor of their articles and reports is very

positive: A female racing driver in the Arab world - the development in the Arab world is definitely visible, especially when it comes to the new generations”. “But when I travel through to Europe, people still talk about Arab countries and say, “Oh, the poor girls, they are not free, they are covered” and I feel a responsibility to explain”, Judith says. “That's the reason why I started to do several talks and speeches in Europe such as the European Forum Alpbach or The Munich Media Days in Germany, one of the biggest forums for media, TV and news worldwide”. Judith is not a woman who does things by halves. It just isn't part of her emotional makeup: “I wanted to get the picture right”, she explains,” I was so fascinated by this very different picture I got from the women in the Arab world. And I wanted to share this positive picture with the whole world”. Targeting the US market is Judith's next step. After several talks in Los

Angeles, Stanford, Silicon Valley and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. she now wants to give Americans a clearer idea of the Arab world. She adds that US Americans form their opinion on the Arab world almost exclusively from the reports from their US media. And because many Americans have never travelled outside the US and only a few visit the Arab world they are full of fear and mistrust. “But how can you trust if you do not know one another?” Judith asks. “That's why I continue telling my stories”, she says, “And this time I am attempting to close the knowledge-gap even further. I want to build sustainable trust between the US and the Arab world. That´s the reason why I am now working on a fascinating new book project, as I firmly believe that without trust, no relation can flourish. And getting to know each other better is the best investment for the 21st century in business and our private lives”.

fashion insider

The Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur Barkha Shewakramani is set to unleash her creative talents once more with a new line of bespoke t-shirts designed especially for International Women’s Day this month.

REGAL FASHION by Francesca Moser

ABODE speaks with designer Barkha Shewakramani about fashion, health and the joy of being a drama queen... What inspired the launch of your fashion line DRAMA QUEEN? A: As a lover of fashion from a young age, I always had an ambition to launch my own fashion line and exhibit my inner ‘drama queen’. I do feel that the creativity you require in fashion design is something that is innate, but it’s important to learn the technicalities of the trade so I went on to study Fashion Design and Garment Construction at The American University in Dubai. I was absolutely thrilled with the response I received when I showcased my debut collection at Dubai Fashion Week in 2007 and this encouraged me to continue. And as they say, the rest is history.

You have been diagnosed with Lupus, an illness can make you feel very tired. Where do you find the strength to work in such a tough environment like fashion?

At the age of 21 I was diagnosed with Lupus, which led me on a path of self-discovery and soul searching. Since then, it has always been my dream to create maximum awareness about Lupus and various auto immune conditions internationally. Blending fashion and charity just makes the journey more fun and less challenging.

What are you trying to communicate through your collection? A: My collection is known to be young, hot and trendy, creating fashionable attire, suitable for both a night out and a day in. When I design, I have the modern woman in mind, and I cater for affordable, versatile and well-designed clothes. Every girl in her own way is full of drama and longs to be treated like a princess. Every garment of mine makes her feel like a queen, hence ‘DRAMA QUEEN’.

The line is expanding rapidly abroad. You are selling in the UK and India as well as the Middle East. Where next? A: I’m keen to launch in Milan and Paris, and also in the States. I’ve also had interest from Hong Kong which is incredibly exciting.

Who are your clients? A: From high society international socialites and Bollywood stars, to fashionistas who are in search for a chic yet wearable and versatile look.

Do you have a favorite Designer? A: I love the work of the late Alexander McQueen and the edge he gave in his designs.

How would you describe the fashion world in the Middle East? A: When I think of the fashion world in the Middle East, I think of high fashion, haute couture, exquisite taste and rich quality. This is iconic of the Middle East and I’m thrilled to be a part of this fraternity. Certain countries and UAE states in the Middle East are also quickly being recognized as new fashion capitals.

MEN’S AGENDA What's new-What to wear and buy- Style tips for Him

TOBY BATEMAN

Buying Director of MRPORTER.COM

Gives ABODE a round-up of the key MENSWEAR SS13 TRENDS and DESIGNERS you should invest in!

Band of Outsiders Contemporary LA based brand Band of Outsiders is the key to an effortless offduty look. The brand has perfected a thoroughly modern approach to preppy American style, and this season’s checked tailoring and oxford shirting are a playful take on the LA meets East Coast summer vacation vibe.

Mismo We’re excited to welcome Mismo to our selection of bags on MR PORTER. Designed by a Danish husband and wife team, Mismo combines a stylishly Balenciaga's legion understated Scandinavian aesthetic with of loyal fans will want high quality Italian materials. Look out for to invest this season, the chic rucksacks and messenger bags, as it is long-standing the slick lines and minimalist design Creative Director Nicholas make for incredibly practical accessories.

Balenciaga

Ghesquiere’s last with the label. The sleek fit and refined attention to detail epitomises the illustrious brand's commitment to sophisticated design. The must-have statement knits and flawless tailoring are as elegant as they are progressive.

Tom Dixon’s Eclectic range is a collection of

home accessories that make impeccable gifts for the houseproud gentleman. Like his celebrated furniture designs, the pieces are inspired by British heritage and crafted from durable copper, marble and wood. We particularly like the fragrant but very masculine scented candles.

men's agenda Todd Snyder With years of experience designing for GAP, Polo Ralph Lauren and J Crew, Todd Snyder’s own label comes with serious American heritage style credentials. Preppy classics with a twist include bright madras check shirts and vintage-look jersey knits. Look out for the tan blouson jacket, an impeccably constructed and stylish piece that will work with everything in your wardrobe

Saint Laurent

Gucci Referencing the

company’s equestrian roots while maintaining a sleek profile, the iconic Gucci snaffle loafer marks its 60th anniversary this year. There’s no better symbol of the brand’s contemporary craftsmanship and heritage.

Ann Demeulemeester

36

ABODE final.indd 36

We’re delighted to welcome Ann Demuelemeester to our designer offering for this season at MR PORTER. As part of the famous ‘Antwerp 6’, we’ve long admired her unstructured silhouette and signature gothic-inspired style. Despite being best-known for her dark, mainly black collections, this season’s range does include some colour, applied in trademark bohemian style to free-flowing silks and linens.

Hedi Slimane’s first collection as Creative Director for Saint Laurent references the designer’s trademark slim and sharp design aesthetic. From razor cut tailoring to skinny fit denim, we’re excited to be stocking the first collection under the label’s innovative new design direction.

Simon Miller Simon Miller’s soughtafter denim is famous for getting better with age. The jeans are sourced from the highest quality Japanese denim, and then produced in downtown LA. Indigo is a key trend for SS13, and Simon Miller’s inky blue linen shirts are an easy, contemporary way to incorporate the colour into your summer wardrobe.

2/25/13 5:49 PM

men's agenda Givenchy Givenchy’s designer, Mr Riccardo Tisci, has

a knack for appropriating traditional motifs and giving them a contemporary, urban feel. The SS13 collection plays with religious imagery, using layered proportions and transparent fabrications to create distorted, fractured prints. Invest in the printed t-shirts, shirts and accessories quickly - these will be the must-have statement pieces of the summer.

Hentsch Man Hentsch Man has gone Hawaiian this season, with bold hibiscus print on shirts, shorts and swimwear. We like the contrast of this bold pattern against Hentsch Man’s clean cut staples - team with bright chinos and chambray.

MP by Massimo Piombo

This Milanese label has been on the radar of Italy’s style cognoscenti for some time, and we’re delighted it is now available on MR PORTER. MP by Massimo Piombo takes classic eveningwear shapes and crafts them from a range of artisanal fabrications. We particularly love the elegant velvet bomber jacket and the printed silk tuxedo jackets. We’ll be layering the formal shirting under relaxed patterned knits to achieve the Italian ‘sprezzatura’ style.

Uniform Wares Uniform Wares takes its design inspiration from the mid-20th century and complements it with an up-to-date construction. Each watch is crafted from the inside out: first the movement is perfected and then the rest of the design follows. The London based designers are devoted to pared-down, clean functionality; here at MR PORTER we consider a Uniform Wares watch the height of understated sophistication.

Junya Watanabe

We’re huge fans of Junya Watanabe’s directional approach and avant-garde take on classic designs. His take on the short suit, one of the trickier trends for spring summer 2013, is cutting edge but wearable. If that’s a little too daring for you, look out for the patterned paisley shirts and the covetable collaboration pieces.

In a society where electronic entertainment seems to be taking centre stage, there is still hope for such pastimes as reading. Getting children interested in reading regularly while they are young can help to instill a lifelong habit that will help them reap plenty of rewards. Reading is good for the brain, as well as the soul. A good book can teach you things, pique your interest, stir your emotions, or make you laugh. Many parents feel their children are always going to reach for a remote control before a book, but there are plenty of ways to help them learn to love what books have to offer.

1. Get excited. Children pay attention to your attitude, even when you think they don’t. Make reading seem like fun time, rather than a daily chore that has to be done before they can have their real fun. Never treat reading like it’s a punishment or burden.

2. Let them read. Even when they first begin to learn how to read, hand the book to them, so they can read to you. While you may need to help them get through it, they will get better with practice. Scour the library for level-one books (or whatever level they are at) and get them practicing daily.

3. You read, too. Even when they are good readers, still take the time to read some stories with them. That way, you can discuss the story afterward and make it a fun activity that you do together. Have a set time each day that you read together, such as right before bedtime.

4. Buy them books. Having books in the home at all times encourages reading. Books do not have to be purchased new. You can save a lot of money by visiting used book sales, garage sales, and thrift stores.

5. Role model. Children need to grow up in a home where they see the adults around them reading. Letting them catch you regularly reading will automatically get them more interested in the idea of doing it themselves. 6. Go to the library – often. The library is an amazing source for getting kids interested in reading. Take them weekly and let them walk around and explore. Get them a library card so they can start checking out books on their own.

7. Let them choose the books. Parents often try to choose the books. This may work for toddlers, but once they are in elementary school, it may not. Let children explore the shelves and find things that interest them. They are far more likely to read if it’s something they chose and that they find of interest.

8. Create a reading corner. Set up a cozy reading corner in your home, complete with a book shelf, bean bag chair, and lamp. Encourage kids to sit there and read. Make it inviting so they will want to visit the corner.

9. Start a kid’s reading club. Most people don’t think to do this, but creating a kid’s reading group can be a fun way to get kids interested in reading. Just like adult book clubs, they will all read a book, then come together to discuss it. The books can get more challenging as the group progresses in their reading skills.

.

10. Look for events Often, author events and story-time events can be found at the library, as well as at performing arts centers. Find some of those to take your child to. They can read the book first, then meet the author, or see the story acted out in a play.

ired of searching for answers about our skin type online, and after listening to too many old wives' tales about the do's and don'ts of skincare, ABODE put itself in the very capable care of the Habibs Hair & Beauty Salon team. The Dermalogica qualified staff at the salon first evaluate your skin by identifying you problem areas using Face Mapping, which takes no more than five to ten minutes eliminating all the guesswork when selecting the best products to suit your skin. Professional Skin Therapist use Face Mapping® to divide the facial landscape into fourteen zones. Each zone is thoroughly examined inch-by-inch through touch and sight, and findings are noted on a prescription sheet. This sheet serves as a customized visual

guide for you, outlining on an actual facial landscape illustration where conditions including congestion, breakouts, dehydration, and/or hyperpigmentation are present. Face Mapping® maintains an accurate record of your skin, which provides you and your Dermalogica Professional Skin Therapist an objective view into the results of any professional product recommendation.

For ladies on the go who want to reduce the time they spend putting their make up on in the morning, I recommend the easy and painless eyelash extension treatment. Within 45 minutes a half set of extensions (30 on each eye) were applied to my individual lash hairs. When I opened my eyes I was astonished. My eyes looked bigger, wider and even bluer. Kim Kardashian eat your heart out! Thanks to this lovely treatment I eliminated the need for any eye make-up, which is great for those who aspire to a low maintenance lifestyle. I'll definitely go back in few weeks’ time to keep up with my new look. A quick fill-in session and my glamorous (but still very natural looking) lashes will last for another four to eight weeks, depending on how fast my natural lashes grow. Definitely worth the investment! I was quite reluctant to try this treatment myself, but now I’m hooked on the results. Goodbye mascara and hello lash perfection in 24 hours!

Lashing out Your eyeliner woes solved! Guerlain International Make-up Artist Middle East Gary Cooper gives ABODE a insight into picking the best eyeliner for you

Q.

I am extremely sensitive to eyeliners especially liquid ones; I’ve heard that eye shadow could be my next best bet, what do you think? – Teary girl.

A.

Eye shadow is a good alternative for eyeliners. Simply line your eyes with the liner brush and you will get the same effect. What’s good is that eyeshadow stays on longer. You could try guerlain 6 color ecrin eye pallete which includes a powder eyeliner.

Q.

I know it was big in the eighties to use coloured liners and want to be more adventurous yet professional for my overall work look, what colour would you suggest goes best with my brown eyes – Brown Eyed girl.

A.

You could use any colour with your brown eyes. Since

brown is a neutral color, any shade can make those brown eyes stand out. Gold and bronze shades will create a softer and warmer look, while shades of blue, green and purple can be both flattering and adventurous.

Q.

Brush VS Pencil which should I be using? – Stuck in a dilemma

A.

I suggest you use a bush to blend the pencil to make the liner look more natural and blended.

Drawing the Line know how 1. 2. Sharpen the pencil, and heat it up a little. If it's liquid, make sure there are no clumps.

Q.

I have oily skin and love to use eyeliner, I often find myself after lunch looking in the mirror and my liner has smudged, what am I doing wrong? – Panda eyes

A. First, you’ve got to choose a

good quality eyeliner for you. Then try these 2 easy tricks to keep it locked up on your lids. 1) Use a primer – it helps hold the eyeliner in place. 2) Set it with a powder. Try guerlain, whose eyeliners are very lasting and tear proof.

Rest the elbow of your chosen arm on a hard surface, and then rest your wrist on your face (while you are holding the pencil/ brush). This will reduce the problem of applying too much on your eye.

3.

Apply the eyeliner. You can tilt your head back slightly and bring your eyes to a semi-open state. It allows you to see what you're doing. Also, let your body tell you what's more comfortable.

4.

If you want thicker lashes, apply it on top lash line. Look at one spot in the mirror, while you’re doing this one. *If you are using liquid liner, let it to dry before opening your eyes all the way, or the eyeliner will transfer into the crease of your eye! Wave your hands on them if you want them to dry quicker.

5. 6.

If you want to soften the eyeliner, use a Q-tip. If you want to correct a mistake, use a Q-tip dipped in eye makeup remover. When it comes to the lower lid, trace the outside of your eye, and follow the shape of your eye. Go light, and repeat where you want it to be darker. The line should usually be slightly thicker at the outside, and thinner the closer you are to the nose. Note to self: Try and avoid coffee or caffeinated beverages before attempting the above.

5 easy moves for beach ready abs By Jay Koodagoda, Health Club Manager Photography Jessie Palanca

Most likely you’re planning on having some fun in the sun this summer, which means you’ll definitely want to tone up in preparation for your new swimming outfit. Getting in shape this season will not only help you look great, you’ll feel better too! Try the simple exercise plan below 3 times a week with a sensible diet to get the best results.

Abs Cross Lie on the floor, legs extended straight and arms by the sides. Lift legs about 50 degrees, with pointed toes. Keep your back rounded with your lower back resting on the floor. As shown in the picture, alternate crossing your ankles over one another. Perform 15-20 repetitions. Be sure to tighten up your abs while doing the crossing.

Abs Hip Lift Lie on the floor with both legs extended straight up and arms by the side of the hips. Without straining your neck or back, lift your hips 3 inches away from the floor, then lower. Repeat 8 times at a slow, controlled pace. Then repeat the movement a little more quickly 16 times.

fitness Abs Straight Legs Sit with both legs extended straight in front of you, toes pointed. Pulling your abs in and up, round your torso so you have a small C shaped curve in your back. Spread your fingers apart and press the majority of your body weight forward into the fingertips, relaxing the shoulders. Keeping your belly button pulled towards your spine, open and close your legs 12 times. If possible, lift your legs slightly off the floor as you open and close.

Abs Knees Through Lie flat on your back, with your feet close to your buttocks, knees 6 - 8 inches apart. Exhale and slowly push your hands between your thighs in a smooth motion avoiding any jerking movements. Control the movement on the way down, inhaling as you gently lower prior to repeating again. Keep your chin off your chest, and if your neck aches, support your head with one hand. Concentrate on controlled smaller movements, aiming to feel your abs contracting rather than using momentum to force into the movement.

Crunch and Push

A strong midsection, that incorporates all of the muscles around your lower torso, will aid all actions from sitting at a desk - performing a biceps curl - throwing a ball - not to mention preventing injury, especially to the lower back. The through knees exercise is a good easy beginner abdominal exercise, which can be made harder when combined with a pulsing movement.

Start lying on your back with your hands by the side of the hips. Keep your palms facing the wall, and your elbows locked and straight. Feet should also be together, one sole against the other, with your knees bent as shown. Lift your head up, contract your abs and slowly push arm forward like you are pushing a door, a second pause and continue to perform 15-20 reps. 3 sets is highly recommended.

EAT your way THIN Vita Health’s Dr Nyjon Eccles and expert nutritionist Amelia Freer have put together some quick detox and weight loss tips • Most weight gain is rooted in poor lifestyle choices, wrong foods (and lack of foods that encourage weight reduction) with an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients. - This is compounded by wrong timing of food intake. A decrease in physical activity alongside the above allows for excess caloric intake above calorie burn. - You should ideally have eaten your evening meal by 7pm at the latest. I have patients who by only doing this and not changing their food intake have achieved their desired weight. • Animal food and high sugar diets are pro-inflammatory, meaning they encourage inflammation at a cell and tissue level. This in turn can lead to raised stress hormones (cortisol), insulin excess (insulin resistance) and increased weight. - A diet rich in plant food (all green vegetables & fruit) and Omega 3s (oily fish like mackerel, sardines & tuna) and a good quality fish oil supplement (ifosprogram.com) keeps inflammation at bay - Consider a day of fasting (just drinking herbal teas and water). This will work wonders for your self-control as well as allow the body a short period of rest, repair and detoxification. • Toxins get stored in our tissues. While avoiding foods that contain toxins

is helpful, a real detox also encourages the healthy elimination of stored toxins and heavy metals from our bodies. So it’s not just about what you don’t eat, but what you do eat that can assist this process. - Antioxidants, fibre and amino acids are essential for detoxification. Chia seeds for example help to transport toxins from the body, artichokes are rich in fibre to encourage healthy elimination, dark green leafy vegetables are rich in antioxidants which support phase 2 liver detoxification, broccoli sprouts in particular. Green tea contains antioxidants which boost liver function and garlic stimulates enzymes in the liver to further aggravate and flush out stored toxins. - So just avoiding the bad foods isn’t a real “detox” – it’s essential to support your body by eating healing and helpful foods to encourage toxin removal.

- Green food supplements, like chlorella, which is easily available, encourages detox, in particularly through the bowel. • A daily probiotic supplement can really help to keep your digestive system happy and reduce bloating and gas. Probiotics sold on offer in supermarkets aren’t good quality, nor are ones with added sugar and made into drinks. A good quality capsule or

A sample meal plan - Lean protein, lots of lightly steamed vegetables, nuts, seeds and one portion of fruit per meal. - Start the day with protein such as an egg, or smoked salmon, or a portion of fruit mixed with nuts and seeds - Have a simple soup or salad for lunch with some chicken or turkey and an apple - For dinner, some steamed fish with steamed vegetables followed by some berries or an orange. - Use fresh herbs to give flavor with a good quality olive oil and a squeeze of lemon added at the end.

powder available from most health food shops needs to be refrigerated. • Dry Skin Brushing is a great way to liberate toxins and move lymph so that they can be eliminated. • If you are trying to lose weight but note your weight fluctuates by 3-4 lbs in a day, you are most likely eating a food that you are intolerant to. • Don’t skip meals. Start your day with a proper breakfast, preferably with some protein, which helps to reduce energy dips and sugar cravings later in the day. Starting your day with caffeine only guarantees energy dips and cravings for the wrong foods by midafternoon. Set yourself up well for the rest of the day. • Plan! If you want to be healthy you do need to prepare your kitchen for success so stock up on your healthy options and plan your meals ahead so that you don’t get stuck hungry and reaching for the quick, low quality, low nutrient options. • Gluten is one of the most inflammatory and toxic substances for many people. Lots of detox diets say to cut out wheat but not all of the gluten grains. I notice quite substantial improvements in client’s digestive

Detox essentials: 1 Replace tea and coffee with green tea and dandelion tea. 2 Drink 2 litres of water throughout the day 3 Avoid all dairy produce 4 Avoid all grains 5 Only eat foods in their natural form, fresh and seasonal 6 No sugars, sweeteners or syrups 7 Don’t overcook anything

health as well and energy and weight loss when they eliminate all grains for a short period. • If a strict detox feels scary or overwhelming, just try to remove one negative food habit or introduce one positive food habit each day. - Like taking your multi vitamins one day, then cutting your caffeine intake by half the next, then adding in broccoli to one meal, then cutting out dairy the next. - The word detox gets thrown around everywhere without real connection to what it means but really, just trying to change dietary habits, eating more consciously and using fresh and seasonal produce is already a great improvement for your health.

Refresh Your Style! hot design trends By Suzy Q Photography Maegan Tintari

Just as we got used to the Greek key and chevron fads of last year we are hit with yet another surge of exciting interior design crazes! Brighter, glossy hues, cozy kitchens, and lots of antique brass, are just a few of the most talked about decorating trends sure to take center stage for 2013. It’s nice to know more of us are becoming braver with our spaces. Here are some of the decor trends designers think will be really big in the upcoming months.

to see this flower y trend for a while as we have been seeing it every where from our walls to our upholstering and even flooring! These botanical textiles and wallpaper patterns inspired by the 1950s have been brought back to the 21st century this time in shiny metallic finishes. Designers are pairing up sweet metallic wallpaper with neutral yet glossy surfaces and burnished hardware.

Finest Finish - Brass

Lots of metallic accessories are being spotted around with brass and copper finishes being our favourite. Slightly less than the shimmering gold we were blinded by last year, this new trend gives a room a strong presence and a subtle elegant sparkle. Bring some glitz and glamour to your home with brass lamps, figurines, and frames. You can even update your existing furniture and kitchen cabinets by switching up the hardware with both shiny or antiqued brass knobs and pulls.

Homey Kitchens

The design of kitchens is moving away from an over spotlessly clean look towards a more comfortable and cozy feel. Kitchens are getting to be the most popular gathering places in our homes and making them feel homey and warm makes them ideal for socializing with family and friends. Reclaimed wooden floors and aged tiles give a lovingly lived-in look while large kitchen islands provide a place to gather around and enjoy meals together. To give your kitchen a vintage, hand done appearance try switching up your backsplash with crackle-glazed tiles or tin paneling. You can buff up your cabinets with warm glazed colours and shabby hardware to give a lovely timeworn look.

Stripes are yet another exciting trend flooding the design scene and designers are putting them just about anywhere to surprise us. Get creative with stripes and add them throughout your home in unexpected places to create interest and drama. Just make sure you get it right by using pastel colours to avoid harsh, bold lines.

A sorbet pallet like baby pink, mint, and yellow are super stylish hues for 2013. 63

What are some of Bilal Pearl Suites' special features? A: We have a very comprehensive gymnasium complete with a personal trainer. The swimming pool and the play area, especially the little child’s play area which is important to us, has been a piece that has been thought out well and with respect to the security and the personnel are all very friendly and professional. Mother Knows Best 10 WISE BITS OF ADVICE FROM MUM This month ABODE lovingly dedicates this issue to women across the globe in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th and to all those who celebrate Mother's Day March 21st. Where would we be today without all those pearls of mothering wisdom, passed down through the ages from mothers to their children, and from our mums to us?

Wisdom from mum 1 Chicken Soup definitely works to beat the seasonal flu. 2 7UP cures everything, especially belly aches. 3 Keep slices of garlic in the kitchen sink, it scares off the creepy crawlies. 4 Keep raw rice in any corner of your home to boost prosperity. 5 Always smile while you cook, it comes out great every time. 6 Never shop when you’re hungry. 7 Place a wooden spoon in the pot while boiling vegetables, the water never spills over. 8 Any food product that highlights a TV commercial is bad for you. 9 If you don’t understand or recognise the ingredients at the back of a package, it’s not healthy. 10 Stir tea with a silver spoon, it tastes better.

Hakkasan is a well-known name around the world offering outstanding dining experiences. What will your outlet in Doha offer to its customers? A: Hakkasan delivers authentic Chinese cuisine in a chic setting located at the finest address in Doha. We also have a beautiful terrace, which is an ideal dining spot now that the climate is becoming warmer, as well as the easily recognisable Hakkasan bar, which offers innovative cocktail creations and an extensive spirit selection.

How would you define your menu creations? A: I would define them as unique. The addition of flavours such as Mongolian spices to our venison dish creates an imaginative twist to our Cantonese base. The food is not only delightful for the pallet but I like my guests to eat with their eyes, with creative yet delicate presentation and garnish. Our desserts reflect this too, from our homemade sorbet and ice-creams to the toffee apple with five spice caramel.

Did you have to adjust your menu for The Middle East market? If so, how? A: The menu has been slightly adjusted in terms of ingredients which are not suitable for the Middle East market. We have, however, stayed true to the Hakkasan philosophy of offering only the

finest ingredients, many of which need to be imported to Doha specifically for Hakkasan. This means our dishes are very unique to us and you will be hard pressed to find anything similar in Qatar.

What inspires you in your job every day? A: It is the compliments and excellent reviews that we receive from the guests. The working atmosphere created by the whole team truly reflects Hakkasan’s drive and ambition but I really have to say that for me being Chef De Cuisine at Hakkasan Doha is not just a job, it is a genuine passion.

Does any other cuisine influence your menu? A: Hakkasan cuisine is heavily influenced by Cantonese cuisine which is prevalent in Hong Kong and nearby areas of the Chinese mainland. I also draw from other major Chinese cuisines such as Szechuan, which has very bold flavours including spiciness and the liberal use of garlic to Fujian cuisine which is known to be light but flavourful, soft and tender.

What's most challenging part of your job? A: When operating such a large restaurant, maintaining the consistency of the dishes is extremely important. We have to make sure that every dish that arrives at a table has the perfect balance of ingredients and flavours as well as being aesthetically pleasing. The wok fires we cook with are extremely hot, which means some dishes such as the signature Black pepper ribeye beef can be cooked in under 3-minutes. Other dishes such as Silver cod in

a guest “withseeing a smile on their face after dining at Hakkasan is very humbling for me as a Chef.

Hakka special sauce take much longer to grill so the timing is crucial and can be a challenge when the restaurant is full most nights.

And what's the most rewarding? A: The most rewarding is seeing our dinner guests leave happy and return a few days later with friends and colleagues. After only 3 weeks of opening, we have many loyal guests who return week after week. Many of them have even come to the kitchen to give us their feedback about their dining experience and seeing a guest with a smile on their face after dining at Hakkasan is very humbling for me as a Chef.

sandwich Fun Facts “One of the most popular types of food is the sandwich but few people are aware of its origin. Sandwiches existed long before they were named as such. Research show that the first sandwich seems to have appeared 100 years B.C. The first time it was named sandwich was in 1726 when the inventor of the sandwich, John Montague, the fourth earl of Sandwich, who was a heavy gambler and was spending endless hours playing cards, kept asking for bread, cheese and meat. Because he kept the cards in one hand, he had to use the other one to eat, so he thought about placing the cheese and the meat between the slices of bread. The other players saw the earl’s invention and started asking about the same type of food, calling it “Sandwich’s”. Source: environmentalgraffiti.com.

Want milk? by Diet Delights Nutrition Center

When passing by the dairy aisle in the supermarket, you might be intrigued by the variety of milk and milk substitutes sold in pretty cartons or bottles. It can be hard to decide which one is best for you and your family. Here is a list of the different creamy liquids out there to help you pick!

Cow’s Milk: Old-fashioned cow’s milk is a powerhouse of many nutrients such as well-absorbed calcium, vitamin D and potassium. It is also a complete source of proteins and comes in different fat versions. Some evidence shows that intake of milk and milk products are linked to improved bone health as well as a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes. Make sure to go for the lighter versions.

Buttermilk: Contrary to what its name implies, authentic buttermilk has a low fat content as it's the liquid which remains once the milk has once milk has been churned into butter. Traditional buttermilk is thick, tangy and contains active bacteria cultures that make it easier to digest. It is commonly used in baking for its taste and digestibility. However, nowadays, commercial buttermilk is just cultured low fat or full fat milk.

Soy Beverages: When fortified with calcium and vitamin A and D, soy beverages become similar to the milk group in terms of dietary value. Nevertheless, soy beverages are lower in fat and cholesterol-free. However, soy protein consumption has been associated with a decreased risk of coronary heart disease. Controversy still rages regarding soy's oestrogenic effect, and its correlation with cancer and endocrine dysfunction.

food Goat's milk While quite similar to cow’s milk, goat milk has nearly the same fat content as cow’s milk, with a notch more. There is slightly less lactose in goat’s milk (9 grams per cup) compared to cow’s milk (12 grams per cup). If you are lactose intolerant and would like to try goat’s milk, start with a small serving with meals. Likewise, people with cow milk allergies are advised to avoid goat’s milk too. Coconut milk: Coconut milk is derived from the meat of mature coconuts unlike coconut water which is the thin, filmy liquid inside a young green coconut. This beverage is high in fat, especially saturated fat and is low in proteins and calcium, unless fortified. Coconut milk is also rich in calories compared to cow’s milk. Therefore, consumption of significant amounts of coconut milk ought to be avoided.

Rice beverages: The word “milk” doesn’t fit well in this case since rice beverages aren’t even close to milk. Compared to cow's milk, rice milk contains more carbohydrates, but does not contain significant amounts of calcium or protein to be called “milk”. Commercial brands of rice milk, however, are often fortified, but calcium bioavailability from plant sources remains limited.

Almond milk: Almond milk may provide calcium, but may not provide the other nutrients found in dairy products. It has nearly as much protein as dairy milk with little or no saturated fat. However, almonds are costly so the actual amount of almonds used in the almond milk is small; it may not be enough to give you lots of nutrition. You also need to watch out for additives and sweeteners in the milk.

Recommendation:

Most dietary guidelines still recommend 3 cups of low-fat or fat-free cow’s milk daily for adults • If you’re lactose intolerant, try lactose-free milk or go for fortified soy beverages. • Avoid condensed milk for its high fat and sugar content. • Low fat buttermilk can be used in baking for its sensory properties • Almond milk may be healthy, but you're probably better off just eating the almonds. • Rice milk and coconut milk both have limited nutritional value. All in all, what you choose to drink is really a matter of personal preference and health objectives. The final decision comes down to your taste and your own favourites.

Magnolia Magic yd by Nitya Shukla

For dessert aficionados, 2013 began on a sweet note with the opening of New York City’s Magnolia Bakery at Dar Es salam Mall in January. What started as an around the corner bakery store on a cosy street corner in the heart of New York’s West Village is now an international brand with outlets in several countries. Which is why we didn’t lose the chance to meet Bobbie Lloyd, President and Operating Partner, Magnolia Bakery, who had flown to Qatar for the occasion.

With Bobbie Llo

S

tore openings are never an easy task, especially if your brand whips out over 120 varieties of handmade baked goods, including cupcakes, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, icebox desserts, muffins and a world famous banana pudding, in addition to being featured in major Hollywood movies and television programs, including “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Modern Family.”

I am, of course referring to Magnolia Bakery, frequently credited for launching the “cupcake craze,” in the late 90s. Having received a fantastic response on the opening of its first ever international store in Dubai, the brand is in the midst of broadening its horizons with stores being launched in Kuwait, Lebanon and now Qatar. Imagine then, being the president of such a brand and having to travel to execute this series of store openings, and having to deal with finding locations, recruiting staff and training them to bake the way you want! Wouldn’t you end up being a work

obsessed executive in a business suit ready for the next project? Not really, since the Bobbie Lloyd I got to meet was in sport shoes, a parka and a warm smile. She was relaxed and happy to be sharing her love of baking with the world - and she didn't hesitate to call herself "a little crazy." Bobbie spoke candidly about everything that she surrounds herself with. It emerges that she's a very energetic person. She believes in empowerment and family values, the importance of always moving forward, and still finds the time to run international marathons every year. During the course of the interview, when asked what was on her mind in that moment her answer was surprisingly simple. “Well last year has been very busy for us. Now I’m

really looking forward to getting back to the kitchen and baking again. I’m working on what I call sweety pies. The idea is to create little pies, which would be something little that you can carry for your sweety!” As part of Magnolia Bakery’s executive team, Bobbie Lloyd has played an integral role in expanding Magnolia from its original location in New York City’s West Village to its current eight locations worldwide. Most recently, Bobbie oversaw the launch of Magnolia’s first e-commerce site, now shipping a selection of baked goods will be the valentine’s day But going international certainly has certainly had its share of challenges Reflecting on her learning curve, Bobbie tells me that the biggest challenge has been to achieve the same brand in all of the stores.

Cakes

Cupcakes lettuce on your hands, nah!” Today, thaving experienced success at such a young age means that Bobbie is able to guide her staff better. She believes in allowing younger chefs to make their own decisions, so that they grow out of her shadow quickly.

Gifts TTo ensure that all the staff are "on message" the bakery got them together to discuss all the company's ideas and the brand. "We are coming to a different culture, but out culture still needs to be sold" says Bobbie. Ensuring quality in all international brands poses an equal challenge, says Bobbie. "Someone asked me whether we were getting the same product here and I said absolutely, we wouldn’t do it otherwise. There is a list of about sixty things including butter, flour etc that we are getting shipped here specially!” she said. Baking is in her genes, quite literally. “I come from a family of bakers, my mother and grandmother were all bakers. In fact, I had the opportunity to learn from my great grandmother as well.” Which is why, in her third year of college, Bobbie moved

to Boston to cultivate her formal training at Boston’s famed Modern Gourmet Cooking School, while continuing to develop her trade by working at some of Boston’s top restaurants. Only two years after finishing her culinary training, Bobbie became a founding member and coowner of American Accent, a critically acclaimed restaurant in Brookline, MA. But she would end up in baking anyway. “There was a reason why I stopped being a chef and that was because I love baking. It's something about the smell of garlic, chicken and

As the interview came to a conclusion, It's clear that in a short space of time, Bobbie has managed to juggle several roles - as a chef, a baker, an entrepreneur, a daughter, a mother and wife, and yet has managed to stay on top without losing her grip. The answer, she says, is to keep things simple. "I just don't sweat the small stuff!" she says.

You don’t have to go shopping for decorations as you can use what you have. Large storage jars for tea or sugar make great

vases and so do upside down wine glasses topped with plates for cake stands. Surprise your guests with a nicely displayed side table with a lavish spread of decadent sweets and delicacies. Keep in mind that presentation is always the key and not everything you serve needs to be made from scratch. Looking

What is the actual name of the show? The tale of the Slava Polunin’s show will be staged at Qatar National Convention Center on the 28th - 31st of March. It's a unique magical theatre production not be missed by all. The creator Slava Polunin is the most decorated living clown and is founder of the ‘Academy of Fools’. His Snowshow is rated as a "classic of the 20th century". When asked how difficult it is to carry on one's shoulders the burden of world-wide fame, Slava usually answers that the difficult bit is not so much to carry it, as to keep it there. This perhaps is the reason why haphazardness has no place in his life: everything he does is thorough, carefully thought-through and weighed, no matter how crazy, inconceivable and adventurous it may be.

strong, for we’ve had a relationship which has lasted for centuries. We still use many Arab words in our language, and our culture has been influenced by Arab hospitality, graciousness, and kindness.

What's the best part of your job? A: Getting to know other cultures and making new friends. And from a professional point of view, the fact that it offers the possibility of conveying a positive image of one's country is very rewarding. Portugal is a country with 900 years of history and the oldest boundaries in Europe, and it speaks one language. My country has a past it can be proud of. Despite the present economic difficulties Europe is going through, Portugal is progressing along an encouraging path and this is an example to be followed.

How many Portuguese citizens live in Qatar? How do you interact with them? A: There are about 200. They are perfectly integrated and participate actively in life in Qatar through a wide variety of professions from aeronautics to engineering, tourism to sport. When it comes to sport, the experience Portugal has in hosting the European Football Championship in 2004 could be useful for the organization of Qatar 2022.

How do you promote your country here in Qatar? A: I am the first resident Ambassador of Portugal to Qatar and I’m in the process of installing our offices which will soon open in West Bay. I maintain widespread contacts

with many authorities in Qatar in order to promote the many touristic, economic and cultural aspects of Portugal. The inauguration of a direct flight between Doha and Lisbon will offer an excellent opportunity for both our countries to become more aware of each other’s full potential.

Are you working on any exciting projects at the moment? A: I believe that the launching by the Portuguese Foreign Ministry "Golden Residence Permit Programme" will offer citizens of other countries the possibility of residing in Portugal if they comply with a set of very accessible conditions. This will be an important step towards an exchange of people and investments as well as for residential tourism.

What do you like the most about Doha, and what do you like to do in your spare time? A: Safe conditions, kindness, the moments of silence while going for an early morning walk and, in contrast, the colourful animation of Souq Waqif in late afternoon.

My job gave me the opportunity to meet several celebrity figures in person, which made me realize that these celebrities are just like any other customer, seeking good and quality time with their families and friends. We understand that you once competed at tennis at a professional level and were listed in the ITF world ranking, as the 325th best player in the world. Any thoughts about changing gears? A: I do not know, for me tennis is something I can’t live without, yet in Qatar I haven’t played much. As you understand my schedule can be tight at times which makes it difficult to find time for tennis. I do see that Qatar has some of the best facilities for this sport and I certainly plan to get involved very soon.

But it’s also tough on family life. My wife used to work in the industry – we met when we were both working in Malaysia. She understands that’s it’s a requirement of our business that you have to move every few years, and set up a new household, but it’s not an easy life.

The Sheraton has a lot of history, doesn’t it? A: Yes, it’s one of Doha’s oldest hotels. Everybody knows it, everybody has memories of it. It’s time for a change now though, so we're looking at a major renovation in the next few years. That’s why I’ve been sent here, to oversee it. When it’s completed I believe the Sheraton will once again be the number one hotel in Doha. It has such a great location, and a great look and feel. It's a landmark for sure. And it has excellent owners, Katara hospitality, who really understand the business.

First Hand advice, for second hand cars by CHARLES AUBÉ

Keen on buying a set of wheels to call your own, but don’t quite have the budget for a new car? A Doha city dweller tells ABODE how not to be used in Qatar’s used car market. Just arrived? Need a car but do not want to take out a loan? Then you are headed for the second hand market. But be careful, used cars are cheaper than new ones, an unwise purchase can prove both more expensive than first thought and very time consuming. To play this game right one needs to carefully follow the rules! What elements to look for? Brand: The first element to consider is the brand. Although all brands are available in Doha, some brands can only be repaired at the brand’s garage. This situation leads to high maintenance and repair costs. On the other hand Japanese brands, due to their high market share, can be found easily and therefore come at an affordable price. Mileage: Low mileage vehicle are a must due to the extreme conditions in Doha. For example, autos with high mileage are susceptible to high maintainance costs from wear and tear. Once the choice is made, it is time to meet the seller. Before doing anything ask for the registration card. Make sure the validity date is not past. The perfect situation would be for the seller to have registered the car within the past 3 months, as that means was recently inspected. The closer the registration date the less chance one has to have a mechanical problem. If possible, ask for the maintenance and repair history. If there is no problem, then go for a test drive and take the car to a garage to do your own checkup. The garage will list
