BEHIND THE SCENES In this issue we bring you aspects of the joy of motherhood.

Dear readers,

M

arch is the season of change as Spring arrives. So this month we are thinking

about change.

Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser continues to change the lives of children and their families all over the world through her steadfast commitment to the campaign for the provision of universal primary education across the globe. Making strides internationally in her role and to which she is recognized and admired by all those she helps the world over. Helping to bring a change and real opportunities to the lives of children to which they may have once thought would be unfounded. In this issue we will look at and celebrate the great works that women are doing to make a difference. Our celebrity feature on the global style maven, Victoria

Beckham - voted Britain’s number one entrepreneur, beautifully exemplifies how she has changed from being a pop star to a fashion designer, and a now a very successful business woman, but above all a very dotting and hands-on mother. This month, we bring a very special treat to our readers, as ABODE will be giving away a pair of VIP tickets to attend the eagerly awaited performance of Michael Bublé as he heads to the Middle East for the very first time. Read all about his expectations and of his excitement on page 98, as well as the details of how to enter this fabulous competition.

T

his is a story of the fashion maven who started off as a girl next door, stumbled into the stratosphere of showbiz, and went on to carve out a successful career outside the pop music industry, where within the last five years, she has steadily established her brand in the highly competitive and cutthroat fashion industry and emerged as a cutting edge designer.

The Spice Before The Posh Born Victoria Caroline Adams on April 17, 1974 to parents Tony and Jackie, she admits to having dreamed of wanting to get into show business since the age of eight, after having seen Fame, a film about young people studying the arts at Julliard. Accordingly, her family recognised their daughter's aspirations and sent the eight-year-old Victoria to the Jason Theatre School, London, where she studied until she was 17. From there she went on to study drama at the Laine Arts Theatre College in Surrey while taking modern dance classes on the side. Her big break came when as an aspiring 20-year-old performer she answered an ad in The Stage magazine looking to audition girls with a talent for singing and dancing. As a result, Geri Halliwell, Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Victoria went on to become one of the biggest pop groups of all time. As part of (Simon) Fuller's shrewd marketing strategy, all the girls were given nicknames. Victoria was called Posh Spice because she came from a fairly well-to-do family in comparison to her more working-class bandmates. Though their reign at the top of the charts was relatively short-lived in the nineties The Spice Girls became a global phenomenon and achieved recognition as one of the first great all-girl groups who sent a message of empowerment to young women everywhere. That attitude remained with Victoria Beckham long after the group dissolved and even after the birth of her first three children. Trying to maintain an identity separate from that of her superstar husband, Victoria began to gain attention for her fashion sense. She attended all the fashion shows and swiftly emerged as Britain's leading fashionista. In 2006 she published the style guide That Extra Half Inch, and created jeans, handbags and a popular range of sunglasses under her DVB brand. "I dreamed of doing my own clothing line even before I was a Spice Girl," she says. "Even though I loved every minute of my life as a Spice Girl, fashion is my passion, not music."

leading fashion retailers around the world. Where other celebrity fashion lines have flopped and faded away, Victoria Beckham is here to stay. A British newspaper recently acknowledged her status as a major player and dubbed her "the high priestess of the 21st-century celebrity creative director." Declared Victoria: "I want my designs to be flattering and go straight from the catwalk on to...my ladies...I also know usually what I would wear corresponds to what many women want: welltailored clothes that make you feel good and are both modern and practical. Women are more dynamic today than ever before and you want to be able to respond to that and reflect the needs of women who have full lives, important jobs, and want to look their best." Style Icon Beneath her skinny, 5'4" frame lies an indomitable will and determination to prove herself beyond the confines of her fashionista image. Though she has made the most of her celebrity, Victoria has resisted the temptation to allow herself to become prisoner to it. "I'm a working mum, but I like being able to throw myself into things," Victoria says of her busy schedule. "I want to reach as many women throughout the world as I can...and create beautiful clothes, good quality clothes I wanted to wear myself."

Foray Into Fashion Now 40, she is looking forward to her new-found stardom as a talented and respected fashion designer whose style is very much a reflection of her own sleek, minimalist tastes. Her recent show at the Fall New York fashion week met with glowing reviews that hailed her "effortlessly cool" collection featuring flowing asymmetric white and off-white dresses as well as navy polo-neck "No one has ever given me anything," said Beckham. "I have always jumpers with balloon sleeves and mid-length skirts. With her husband David and their three-year-old daughter Harper looking been a hard worker...The Spice Girls had a crazy schedule. I can't imagine what I'd do all day if I didn't work." "The Spice Girls were on approvingly in the first row seated next to Vogue's Anna successful because we celebrated women," Beckham said. "That's Wintour, Victoria Beckham had given notice that she can put her why I do what I want today...I want to be able to create beautiful media savvy to effective use by translating her personal style and interesting clothes and other accessories for women..."I want into sleekly stylish collections that have found their way into the

A Mother’s Devotion However glamorous her image may be and her regular appearances in the glossy mags, it's important to appreciate Victoria's devotion to her four children. Though she has a nanny who comes in two or three days a week and helps out when she's traveling or on deadline for the launch of new collections, Beckham is adamant when it comes to getting her three boys Brooklyn, 15, Romeo, 12, and Cruz, 9 - off to school in the morning before heading off to work.

"First time around I felt famous, but now I feel successful" - Victoria Beckham Designer & entrepreneur

to get bigger and bigger - I absolutely want an empire." Added Beckham: "I think I know how women feel, how women want to look," she says. "I can really relate to women, I get on very well with women. Some women don't...(Smiles) I want to empower women, make women feel the best version of themselves."

"I get up at around 6 o'clock, do my workout, get the children dressed, give them their breakfast, check if there are any math tests, if they need their football boots, and then either myself or David takes them to school. I'm normally in the office by 9 o'clock. I do spend most of the time here. I have my breakfast here, a cup of tea, and some fruit, and then I'm normally catching up with my assistant, or I've got to make a phone call to the headmaster of the school." Added Beckham: "It's complicated because two of the boys go to the same school, Brooklyn goes to a different school, Harper goes to another school, so usually David and I each do a school run." Said Beckham: "I'm lucky that I do something I love, and I am proud as I think it's a positive message to give to young women: if you want to have a career, and be married with children, then you can. It's full-on, but it's doable... Although my mum can't understand why I'm working this hard now, to be honest." Top Entrepreneur Certainly, Victoria Beckham is excited about her emergence as a respected fashion designer. Her collections are featured at all the major fashion shows and the long-standing arbiter of style, Anna Wintour, is a major booster. From her four-storey atelier in Battersea, south London, Victoria Beckham is an admitted perfectionist involved in every aspect of her business, supervising 100 employees, last year saw her open her first flagship clothing boutique on London's fabled Dover Street as the Beckham brand has become part of the popular imagination. It's the fulfillment of a lifetime ambition for the former Posh Spice. In 2014, she was named the Business Entrepreneur of the Year by Management Today magazine in recognition of her brand's increasingly important stature. It's one more indication that Victoria has found her niche above and beyond her pop star fame. With financial backing from her husband and from former manager Simon Fuller, Victoria Beckham's label has taken the fashion world by storm and is currently expanding her brand into the China and the Asian market in general. She recently added a younger, inexpensive line - Victoria by Victoria Beckham - targeting younger women with more casual and colourful clothes and has also enjoyed great success with her accessories line of handbags, sunglasses, and jeans. Indeed, while many are keen to tether Victoria to her Spice Girl roots and celebrity cachet, the businesswoman has, in fact, long strutted beyond those boundaries.

The blast of colours from overalls to sweatshirts or suits covered in fusion with pop art designs, one will definitely stand out in the crowd of conventional street wears. Indeed, isn’t summer meant to show off your fun and wild side after all?

DARED FASHION

Versace highlights its SS15 with a pink suit that tells pretty everything about the collection; a dare for men to step out of their comforts and show off confidence with their masculinity. And no matter how challenging this collection is for the usual structure of men’s fashion, the question is “Are you brave enough to take it?”

NAVY-GATION

Gucci played it well this time with pieces that are actually “wearable”, minimalistic yet bold, youthful and forward. Taking inspirations on the nautical seascape, the monochrome themes overlaid with graphic lines and textures just make us want “nautical” more and more. Now we realize that a sailor’s appeal doesn’t come from being a sailor but the combination of stripes, black and white and warm blue and red that work perfectly together!

LET’S GET PAMPERED!

ABODE seeks out the best and latest treatments in town to make you feel and look fabulous.

Hot Stones Relax and Release At Grand Heritage Doha Hotel and spa

I

f you have never experienced a hot stone massage, then you are most certainly missing out. Fact! Situated majestically in the grounds of the Aspire Zone, Grand Heritage Doha Hotel and Spa is hidden gem in Qatar. In all its glory and grandeur, you would expect nothing less but outstanding when it comes to their Spa and treatments. And you would be spot on to think so as ABODE came to find out during their speciality massage. Hot stone massage works by using heated basalt stones which are placed on reflex points and along the spine to relax the muscles. In a sweeping finesse motion used by the therapist, the hot stones are used to release tension and promote energy flow, and the quality in the treatment itself was a simple reflection of how well trained the therapist seemed to be. You certainly do not want to be in the company of unskilled hands with such a treatment. With such precision to this treatment, it is no wonder that the benefits include dissolving muscle stiffness, increase in circulation and metabolism and release of toxins – just to name but a mere few.

THE CHIC MAKING OF A MODERN MUSE Like the award-winning original Modern Muse, Modern Muse Chic has been inspired by the complexity of a modern woman. Who is Modern Muse Chic? Estée Lauder‘s Senior Vice President, Karyn Khoury, takes us behind the fragrance to provide this answer and much more. Q. What is the inspiration behind Modern Muse Chic? A. Modern Muse Chic was inspired by the bold, daring, more dramatic and creative side of a Modern Muse. It captures a bold vision of modern femininity, expressing a Modern Muse’s daring and dynamic spirit. A unique contrast of Vivid Florals and Ebony Woods reveals the never ordinary, always feminine essence of her character. Q. How would you describe Modern Muse Chic? A. Modern Muse Chic is a Vivid Woody Floral scent. It blends a unique contrast of sophisticated florals and succulent

Karyn Khoury

fruitiness juxtaposed against deep sultry woods to capture the duality of her charismatic personality. The innovative “dual impression” structure allows women to connect with the fragrance through two contrasting aspects: Vivid Florals Accord: This facet of the fragrance exudes her bold femininity. Jasmine Sambac is the centerpiece -- -- it blends with vibrant florals of Tuberose and Stargazer Lily, accented with succulent Juicy Plum and Davana, for an impression of vivid floralcy with attitude. Ebony Woods Accord: Her creativity and stylish individuality are expressed through a captivating combination of Cashmere

Woods, Agarwood and Labdanum. An intense Patchouli Blend is at the core of the Ebony Woods accord, creating a deep magnetism. The woods are enhanced with Sueded Musks and Madagascar Vanilla for an addictive and irresistible sensuality. How is Modern Muse Chic different from the original Modern Muse? Modern Muse Chic is a vivid, more intense expression of the Modern Muse emotion. The lush floralcy is maintained with Jasmine Sambac as the centerpiece; however, the fresh lilies of Modern Muse are replaced by bold, more intense

42

ABODE March CS6.indd 42

Stargazer Lilies; while a deeper Tuberose element enhances the signature. These vibrant florals are combined with plum and davana for a saturated, vivid floralcy. In the background, the addition of Cashmere Woods, Agarwood, Labdanum and more Patchouli creates a darker magnetism. Who are your Muses? I have been fortunate to have a number of inspirational muses in my life, including Mrs. Estee Lauder who taught me to connect with my inner vision and to trust my instinct. But I would have to say that my two most important muses have been my mother, who taught me too many life lessons to list here and to whom I will always be grateful, and Mrs. Evelyn Lauder, who was a teacher, a mentor and a friend for the many years we worked together. What has been one of your favourite fragrances that you have worked on so far? There are so many fragrances I’ve enjoyed working on that I couldn’t just name a one. My “fragrance of choice” really does vary depending on emotion I want to feel. I'm known for loving certain kinds of green notes. I think they're a modern way to give naturalness to fragrances. Of course, I love floral notes, especially peony and jasmine.

Behind the scenes

Model and face of Modern Muse, Arizona Muse

I’m also fascinated with spice notes, and love finding different ways to use them so they add new dimensions to traditional perfumery ingredients. What is the best way to make fragrance last on you? Layering fragrance is an approach in which multiple same-scented product forms are used so that you get a richer, longer lasting impression without having overwhelming strength. On a weekend, for example, you might wear only the scented body lotion for a lighter, more casual impression. But when you go to work, perhaps you would wear the body lotion and the fragrance for a fuller, more sophisticated impression. And if you really wanted to pamper

yourself, you could cleanse with the samescent shower gel or soap, moisturize with the companion body lotion and cream and finish with a luxurious spray of the eau de parfum. In fact, by layering these different forms you are able to vary the impression and the depth of the scent, get great awareness and lastingness and not over-use the eau de parfum for strength. I think women today enjoy experimenting with how they wear and experience a fragrance.

modern muse chic • Be an inspiration. Experience the fragrance that captures your daring, your creativity your exuberant style. A bold contrast of vivid florals and sensual ebony woods. Two distinctively different accords—Vivid Florals Accord and Striking Ebony Woods Accord—provide an intriguing dual impression. It's a true innovation in fragrance design, as complex and fascinating as the woman who inspires it.

beauty Q&A Your answers to those everyday beauty questions you've always wanted to ask. Questions answered by Andrea Hevesi-Swan Compiled by Chet Tibayan

We all know that at times being a mother can mean being time-shy. Too busy with taking care of and running after the children that somehow, the fancy stuff goes out the window and you end up opting for a ponytail and some lip balm (and that’s on a good day). Doha-based make-up artist Andrea Swan, a working mother herself, answers your beauty questions to how you can still look your best every day, simply by using a few quick tried and true beauty tips.

From Adelaida Concealer, Estee Lauder

to have Q.Imywant “glow” or

“blooming look” FROM WHEN I WAS 22, are there any professional TRICKS to achieve it once more?

A.

From Norma Vicente

Q.

I got melasma from pregnancy, how can I cover them properly?

A.

Try Make-Up Forever Full Cover Concealer, they are great for correcting and Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Coverage Foundation, they are superb. Make sure you start out with a tiny amount as they are heavy in coverage!

Regular facials, enough sleep, drinking lots of water, a good, heavier moisturizer for the night, less stress and eating the right food all contribute towards having a younger looking, glowing skin. For a quick fix, try GlamGlow, a mud mask that also exfoliates skin - available from Bliss Spa at W Hotel. Don't forget your eyebrows either, a clean, maintained shape makes a lot of difference, instant lift! Keep in mind it is recommended to use a brush.

From Rosafel Majabague

am a working mom Q.Iand I don’t have

luxury of time to put on make-up, are there any tips on how can I put make up within just 5 to 10 minutes?

A.

Before make-up, always wear a light weight moisturizer. Highly recommend Shiseido Ibuki one. Your best bet to cut down on time is to use a CC Cream or a BB cream, I personally fell in love with Guerlain's Lingerie de Peau BB, as it doesn't need any powder!

From Michela

give me Q.Please tips to look at least 10 years younger.

A.

Ten?? Exercise, laugh and wear make-up haha! Stick to neutral and peachy tones of lipsticks and go easy on the eyes!

If you can stretch to doing an eyeliner, then set the eyelids with Bobbi Brown's Pressed powders, they are super light and invisible. All you need is a couple of sweeps with a blender brush or a small powder puff.

Cream Blush, Chanel

Use mascara to finish off the eyes (if you need it - a lot of you might have eyelash extension) Cheeks: opt for cream blusher, my favourite would have to be Chanel's, they are so blend-able. Lips: lipbalm then a sweep of your favourite lipstick.

Makeover Secrets

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, some would say that the most beautiful women in the world are mums-tobe. Tips from HATTY & CHRISTY

Rania Before makeover

Rania Rodyne Rania, a 30 year old Project Manager for Qatar’s first & leading talent agency, Trinity Talent Qatar, is a first time mother-to-be. Rania’s excitement about her pregnancy experience lies within her sheer anticipation and eagerness to counting down the last weeks before she welcomes a baby son to this world. So before then, a well-deserved relaxation time for her is very much in high demand.

Tips from v The Makeup Artist

The Hair Stylist

Step 1: For an instant and non-permanent update and transformation, we decided to apply coloured hair chalk. •TIP: Hair chalk is a great way to experiment with different colours and get creative, without having to commit. Step 2: To provide the hair with volume, we blow dried it by adding volumizing mousse and prepping it initially with blow dry cream. •TIP: Using a blow dry cream helps to stabilise the hair before heat is added. Step 3: From assessing the hair we worked with the natural curly texture and decided to go for an evening look. By working in side braids – using the lines of the hair chalk as a guide, a detailed hair ‘rose’ was then created at the side of the hair. •TIP: If you are going for a focal hair design piece such as a ‘rose’, then it is best to keep the rest of the hair slicked and uncomplicated. Step 4: The second look achieved, is a casual take on volume. Keeping in the side braids, we added few extra curls and then ruffled it up using shine mist. •TIP: To eliminate frizz from volumized curls, it is best to use a shine spray whilst styling which will also help to shape and keep the curls.

Step 1: A moisturiser was used initially on the skin, which acted as a redness relief and a cover up. •TIP: Good moisturisers usually help to neutralise the skin helping to eliminate patchy redness. Step 2: Working on the dark circles, use a highlighter around the eyes •TIP: Use a contouring technique when applying a highlighter to the dark circles. Step 3: Three different shades of eyeshadow have been used to achieve the overall look. •TIP: Use a light colour as a base, followed by the main colour and then for the outside corners use a darker tone which will provide the definition. Step 4: Our 7-step HD Brow treatment that focuses on a combination of different techniques was used so to give the perfect brow. •TIP: Whether they are overgrown or over plucked, HD Brows can sculpt your brows into the perfect shape, dramatically enhancing facial features.

“I am a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me” – Maya Angelou

Women, we are all phenomenal in our own way and what makes us even more phenomenal is our ability to create life. Well, the good news is that losing the “baby fat” after delivery is not as hard as it seems. Since all our bodies are different, so are the pregnancies. Before starting any kind of exercise you must consult with your doctor or physician to ensure it is the right type of exercise for you and the right time to start your workout.

Ask Martyn Psychologist, life coach and consultant Martyn Stewart is ready, willing and extremely able to tackle your anxiety woes. Want to reach out to Martyn with your concerns? Then email: info@relationship-solutions.co.uk Remember, “a problem shared is a problem halved”

Q.

My best friend is always nice to me, but I'm really jealous and possessive over her. When she gets attention, I want it. I try to take everything from her. I buy the things she likes and interrupt her conversations. I put her off jobs and even try to take people who are close to her away. I do care and don’t like the way I'm acting. I want to change.

A.

What you are feeling has nothing to do with your friend and everything to do with you. Jealous responses are linked to a fear of loss. A deep-rooted insecurity that your friend will abandon you, perhaps for a new job or to new people. You fear your friend is going to leave you. So in an attempt to make her need you, you try to take the things she has. It has become a crippling habit and you need to address the root cause. Inside, it is destroying your own self-esteem and worth. However, from your description, it sounds like you have a truly nice friend and your behaviour hasn’t driven her away…yet! However, your fear of loss, makes you cling even tighter. If this continues, it will become suffocating for her. She will have no other option but to break free. It’s very likely your friend has noticed your behaviour. She probably possesses characteristics that you admire so tell her how important she is to you. Rather than worry about losing her, work on being honest to make your friendship stronger. You will gain security in yourself, develop mutual respect and create interdependence on each other. If she is a real friend she will be supportive.

feeling for children, however many underestimate how powerful these emotions are for parents too. You are not alone in feeling this. Separation is a shock to both of you as it disrupts your usual routine. However, it is an essential part of the attachment bond created between you and your daughter. The key thing for a child is stability and security. Research shows that children who have this tend to develop two key aspects, interpersonal trust and self-esteem. They then go on to have more secure attachments to their parents, as well as others and have healthier adult relationships too. So allow yourself to feel anxious. This is a natural parenting instinct. Children are remarkably adaptive and before you know it, she will be coping with the new situation. Resist the temptation to make your daughter clingy and over-dependent on you. Although it may give you a temporary boost to your own self-esteem, it will not help hers in the long-term. Have faith in the trusting bond you have established and you will be rewarded with more security from your child later on. And remember, you need to have your own life too.

A.

There is no denying the fact we live in a world where image is important. Therefore, it can be difficult to accept when age creeps up on us or we struggle to do the things we once took for granted. Naturally, it may shake your self-confidence. However, this sort of feeling tends to occur more in our youth or when we are surrounded by shallow people. It takes on greater importance as we are not being our true selves. Many of the most attractive people feel hollow inside because of such superficial environments. The people who are really interested in you don’t care about your weight, clothes or age. When you are engage regularly with mature people whom you have meaningful connections, it’s not even an issue. They want to be in your presence. Anybody who is interested in you just for the way you look is not worthy of your time. A real woman’s beauty comes not from her physical appearance alone but her aura. How she carries herself; the confidence she exudes; the self-acceptance and love she has for herself. This woman outshines the appeal of any model. Don’t lose your confidence, I guarantee it is one of the first things people notice - not a few extra pounds.

Kick Your Metabolism Into High Gear!

The Dos and Don'ts of Efficient Fat-Burning

By SparkPeople.com

I

f you’re reading this, chances are pretty good that you don’t have a metabolism that lets you eat as much as you want without ever gaining an ounce. Maybe (like me) you’re even at the other extreme, where it seems like all you have to do is smell the foods you love to start packing on the pounds. Does this mean you’re doomed to a lifetime of munching on carrot sticks with fat-free dressing, while watching your hollow-legged friends enjoy their pasta Alfredo and chocolate cheesecake? Not at all.

There are lots of things you can do to turn your body into an efficient fat-burning machine, and they don't include depriving yourself of foods you love, resorting to unhealthy gimmicks, or taking expensive “fat-melting” supplements that fail to deliver what they promise. All you have to do is avoid a few common mistakes, and include some simple ways to boost your daily calorie burn.

Metabolism

DON'TS

Don’t skip meals.

Going too long between meals affects your body chemistry in ways that can make weight loss more difficult. Most people can manage their hunger and avoid cravings and overeating by spreading out their calories into four to five small, well-balanced meals or snacks Don’t reduce your during the day. Try not to go more calorie intake too low. than four to five hours without The fact that you gain weight easily eating something. is proof that your body likes to shift into

fat-storage mode at the drop of a hat, and going too low on calories is one of the easiest ways to trigger that reaction (often referred to as starvation mode). Don’t fall for the mistaken idea that the less you eat, the more you’ll lose—that’s just not how your body works. Staying within your recommended calorie range will keep your internal furnace stoked so that you have more capacity to burn stored fat.

Don’t short yourself on shuteye.

More research is showing that chronic sleep deprivation plays a significant role in weight gain. Your body needs plenty of “downtime” for the internal housekeeping that keeps your metabolism in good working order. The occasional late night won’t hurt you, but consistently sleeping just one hour less than you need may slow down your weight loss considerably.

Stay as active as possible.

Metabolism

DO'S

Build muscle! This is the most important action you can take to maintain a high metabolic rate while trying to lose weight. Strength training prevents you from losing a lot of muscle along with the fat you lose when dieting. If you don’t strength train regularly, up to 30% of the weight you lose could be muscle tissue. Considering that a pound of muscle burns about 3 times more calories per day than a pound of fat even when you’re sitting still (and up to 15-20 times more calories per minute when you're physically active), you can see the problems this can cause. If you lose 20 pounds of weight (and 30% of that weight loss is muscle—seven pounds), you’ll be slowing your metabolism and your fat burning capacity down by a significant amount. A simple strength-training program twice a week can limit your muscle loss to almost zero, and keep your metabolism running high.

Exercise in the morning or in frequent bouts.

Don’t just sit there.

If you’re watching TV or sitting at your desk, get up frequently to do a few exercises. Keep those resistance bands and dumbbells nearby at all times—you can fit a complete strength training workout into the commercial breaks of a one-hour TV show. Ditch your chair and sit on a stability ball (or a stationary bike) instead— even fidgeting can help!

Include mental exercises.

The more you use your muscles, the more calories you will burn. Moderate exercise like walking can burn three to six times more calories per minute than sitting still, and high intensity exercise like interval training can burn more than 12 times as much. Likewise, the more you vary your daily activity and exercise, the more you keep your body on its fat-burning toes.

Both strength and cardio exercises boost metabolism by increasing your calorie burn even AFTER your session is done. You can get the most out of this perk by starting your day with a workout or by incorporating multiple exercise sessions into your day. Longer or intense workouts have a greater "after burn” but even a 15-minute walk will make a difference.

Try interval training.

The harder you work, the more calories you will burn both during and after exercise—plus your fitness level will really improve. Studies show that exercising as intensely as you can, for at least 10 minutes per day, produces the best results. Interval training is an effective way to increase the intensity and duration of your workouts without running yourself into the ground or risking injury.

One of the most important (but least recognized) factors in keeping your metabolic fires well stoked is managing stress effectively. Chronic stress disrupts the hormones that regulate everything from appetite to fat storage, and can defeat even the best exercise and eating plans. The more effort you put into recognizing and handling stress, the better off you’ll be. Include some time in your schedule every day for relaxation exercises, yoga, journaling, and other stress management activities.

And Most Importantly…

Make exercise and healthy eating FUN! Experiment frequently with new exercises and recipes, or anything that keeps you interested and adds some spice to your program. Well, don’t stop there. The more variety you can put in your diet and your exercise routine, the more stimulating it will be. That makes it easy to put your best efforts forward, and get a major metabolic return on your investment

Your

20's This is a time in your life when you tend to work hard and play hard – so takeaways are just too tempting. However, fast food doesn’t have to mean unhealthy. Opt for lighter choices such as grilled chicken wraps, skip the fries or ask for burgers without creamy dressings. Buy low fat frozen dinners for quick meals at home and keep the fridge stocked with nutritious snacks, such as hummus and baby carrots. You should also make sure you’re consuming plenty of protein for vital muscle building. Eat More: • Protein-rich foods such as lean beef and skinless chicken • Leafy green veggies • Low fat snacks like yoghurt and fruit

Your

Your

30's

Many thirtysomethings find themselves running out of energy as they juggle work and kids. If you haven’t already, it’s the right time to start eating more iron-rich foods to prevent feeling run-down. If you’re planning a baby, boost your intake of folate to increase your prospects for a healthy pregnancy (a folate supplement is recommended). To keep those dreaded wrinkles at bay, consume fish rich in Omega 3, an essential fatty acid which helps nourish the skin. Eat More: • Iron-rich foods like lean meat, lentils and spinach • Fish high in Omega 3 such as salmon, tuna and sardines • Folate-rich foods such as mung beans, chickpeas and kidney beans

Your

40's Yikes – where did that spare tire come from? It’s a truth universally acknowledged that preventing weight gain becomes so much harder as your metabolism slows in your forties. Try to ignore fad diets and focus on a sensible eating plan which works in the long-term. Include plenty of low fat foods, whole grains, fruit and vegetables to not only keep you slim but ward off your chance of developing heart disease, diabetes and other lifestyle related illnesses. Eat More: • Whole grain bread and pasta • Brown rice • Antioxidant rich foods such as berries and walnuts

50's

and beyond The hormonal changes that affect women in their fifties have a huge effect on nutritional needs. Bone mass and muscle mass will decline, so you need to increase your intake of calcium and protein. You should be getting about 1200 mg of calcium every day and 140-170 grams of protein. Both sexes will notice that the drop in metabolism becomes even more pronounced in the sixties and seventies, so reducing portion size is a must. Eat More: • Low or no fat dairy products such as skim milk, yoghurt and cottage cheese • Non-dairy calcium products like fortified breakfast cereal and soy milk • Lean beef or chicken

How Many Calories Do I Need?

Typical calorie needs per day are 2500 for a man and 2000 for a woman. However, this varies considerably based on age, body composition and daily activity. For example, a woman who is moderately active and who requires 2000 calories per day at the age of 20 is predicted to need 200 fewer calories per day by the time she reaches 50.

7 BIG Trends TO Personalize Your Small office

Suzy Cacic

By Suzy Cacic – Canadian Interior Design Writer at BetterDecoratingBible.com Photos By Laura Moss, Nicole Hill, Kathy Daukant, Iba Design

Transform your tiny office space into a personal haven that is all about YOU! We hunted down some of the best trends of 2015 that will make your tiny workspace cozy, homey, and downright glamorous!

2 1

Work Wonders with Plants

Adding a plant or two is really a no-brainer when it comes to office décor, and is a fantastic way to bring in some instant life to a monotone space. Consider plants that don’t need a lot of watering or sunlight like a cactus, bamboo, or one of my favourites – bonsai! You can also work wonders with floral upholstery like these punchy poppy red armchairs!

3

Bold Blue Accessories and Walls Greek blue is a daring, trending colour this year and is the perfect way to transform your boring office space into a more vivid and positive environment. Even shades like indigo and navy look extra vibrant in muted spaces like what your office probably looks like now. Dip your toes in with a seat cushion for your office chair and simple blue accent pillow. If you have the right to paint your office, consider indulging in an all-over wall colour!

Glamorize Family Pictures

Instead of taping family photos all over your office space, choose a few of your favourite shots and print them out in black and white. To create a high-style look, frame smaller photos in larger frames with bold white backgrounds. If you already have mismatching frames, just paint them all black – it will look like you bought them like that!

64

ABODE March CS6.indd 64

3/1/15 9:50 AM

4 5

Extreme COLOUR Dosage! You can easily enliven a neutral space with a few selected colours for your wall, carpet, and accessories. Bold, strong colours work best for the office and will make it feel more comfortable and uplifting. Take advantage of your office furniture and sneak in colours like painting the back of your bookshelves or wallpapering them with your favourite wallpaper!

6

Animal Hide Rugs

Maps and Architectural Art

There is no doubt that animal hide rugs are the most sophisticated way to dress up your space! Whether it’s cowhide or zebra, your polished office will look like you mean business!

7

This year we are seeing a lot of maps and architectural drawings being hung up from the office to the bathroom! Integrate this trend by framing maps of your hometown, a blueprint of your home, or even sketches of a meaningful building. You can also buy full size road maps and just layer them onto your wall for an easy, temporary way to mimic wallpaper!

Put Yourself in a Powerful Position

You don’t need to be a master at Feng Shui to understand the impact your furniture has on your business. Position your desk in a comfortable space where you can have some privacy as well as greet your visitors and communicate with co-workers. Placing your desk in the centre facing the door will make your environment more encouraging and productive. It will also make you feel less cramped and more upbeat while working!

Mattias Roock is the Executive Chef of Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha. In his new role, Mattias is responsible for all the restaurants in Qatar’s new ultra-luxury hotel and he will have a special interest in elevating the cuisine in his signature restaurant Sawa. Sawa Dining Room will offer delicious recipes and the best breakfast in Doha for guests and visitors alike.

Mattias Roock,

Executive Chef, Marsa Malaz Kempinski Q. Coming from a family of chefs, did it influence you to become one as well? A. Yes, absolutely. It’s in my blood, I grew into a chef. My grandfather owned a restaurant and ran it for over 10 years before my parents took over; my father has been running it for the past 36 years. One could say I grew up next to the stove. As a child my sandbox was next to the kitchen, so I could always smell what was being cooked and prepared for lunch. By the time I was 12 I knew I wanted to

become a chef and take over the family restaurant one day. However, during years of growing up my aspirations grew and my dreams changed; fast forward twentyodd years and I am now the Executive Chef at Marsa Malaz Kempinski rather than working in the family business back home in Germany. Q. Is this your first time in Qatar? If yes, what are your first impressions? A. Having arrived in Qatar last summer,

I immediately started working on the restaurant concepts in Marsa Malaz Kempinski; as you can expect it’s been an incredibly busy time for the entire team ever since arrival. One of my first impressions was the passion for food here in Qatar – people appreciate good food and Doha has a varied and good selection of eateries. It’s very exciting to live in a city where the food scene is constantly changing and developing – it keeps us on our toes!

72

ABODE March CS6.indd 72

3/1/15 9:51 AM

Q. Have you tried any local dish? Which has been the most memorable for you? A. As a chef, I love food – food is my passion, any given opportunity I love trying new foods. After arriving in Qatar, I immediately immersed myself in the Arabic cuisine, tried as many restaurants as I could, and every brunch on offer to see what our competition was offering and how we could build on the current the dining scene and offer something new and exciting.

frozen yoghurt at breakfast which I have not seen anywhere else in Qatar. There will be a flavour of the day and au naturel which will allow guests to top up with our bespoke, secret recipes, including the Marsa Malaz roasted muesli and granola, as well as organic fruits, nuts and spices. Q. What are the five things you can’t cook without? A. Depending on what type of cuisine

you’re focusing on, your tools will be different. To be honest, it’s not so much about the items I can’t cook without, as the three rules I obey: one should never repeat items on the menu; one should always respect the season; and one should always respect the region. With these three ‘rules’ in mind, I look at the seasonal products available in the region, I look at the variety of the ingredients and the rest is my own experience, my own touch.

I love the local food, the food culture and the spices, the flavours, presentation of the dishes and the pride people take in their cooking. And quite rightly so! What I really took to, was the importance food plays in the local community; eating is not only a meal, it’s a shared experience. That’s what we are emulating at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, making the restaurant visits personal and memorable. Q. How do you feel being an Executive Chef in Sawa, Marsa Malaz Kempinski? A. It's an absolute privilege and honour to be heading up such an energetic and enthusiastic team that we have here at Marsa Malaz Kempinski! As Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl Doha is a hotel with a number of bespoke food and beverage outlets, our team consists of over 100 chefs who hail from food havens around the world. I was lucky to realise very early on, that cooking is a team effort, and without my team I cannot do anything. Therefore, my key goal is to keep the team motivated and to recognise the talent when recognition is due. Q. What cuisine in Sawa you think will create the most excitement? Why? A. The specialty at Sawa will be the breakfast. In my career I have worked across three continents as an Executive Chef which has given me unique insights that ensure my team and I will provide whatever our guests need - our overall goal is to have the best breakfast in Qatar. We will offer a huge variety of cuisines including cold cuts, meats and cheeses, European/continental breakfasts, as well as Arabic dishes to ensure we are meeting and surpassing the highest of standards. In truth though, I’m most excited about our

Vs. QUAIL EGGS Photography Jessie Palanca Recipe courtesy of Chef Zahira Bouazi Moroccan Kitchen Al Jasra Boutique Hotel Argan Restaurant

Quail's eggs are much smaller than chicken eggs - perhaps a quarter of the size. They are usually speckled and spattered in the most charming way imaginable, so this in combination with their dollhouse size makes them almost irresistible. Argan Reasturant in Al Jasra Boutique Hotel shows us just how versatile and nutritious the humble eggs can be.

Chef Zahira Bouazi

Tajine Ingredients > 250g minced lamb > 20g onion > 5g pepper > 5 quail eggs > 40g parsley > 40g coriander leaves > pinch of salt > 1 tbsp olive oil > 200g tomato sauce

Procedure 1) Combine all of the kofta ingredients, using your hands to knead in the spices and herbs. 2) Shape the kofta mixture into very small meatballs the size of large cherries – about 3/4 inch in diameter. 3) Add the meatballs to the tomato sauce, along with a little water – 1/4 cup (60 ml) is usually sufficient – and cover. 4) Cook for about 40 minutes, or until the sauce is thick. 5) Break the quail eggs over the top of the meatballs, and cover. Cook for an additional 7 to 10 minutes, until the egg whites are solid and the yolks are partially set. Serve immediately garnished with chopped parsley.

Main Dish Chicken Pastilla Ingredients > 250g chicken whole > 1 white onion > pinch of pepper > 5 quail eggs > 40g parsley> 40g cinnamon powder > pinch of salt > cinnamon stick > 200g saffron > 5g ginger > 20g blossom orange water > 100g powdered sugar > 2g gum arabic > 2g walnut > 200g filo pastry

Procedure Cook the Chicken 1) Mix the chicken with onion, spices, butter and oil in a heavybottomed stock pot, Cover and cook over medium to medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, for about an hour, or until the chicken is very tender and falls off the bone.

2) Fry the almond in batches, stirring constantly, until golden brown. As soon as the almonds are richly coloured, transfer them to a tray lined with paper towels to drain and cool. Assemble the Bastilla 1) Generously oil a 14" or larger round Pan, and shape a circular pie as best you can. 2) Brush melted butter on each sheet of warqa or filo pastry as you work. If using filo pastry, take care to keep it covered with plastic as you work since it dries out very quickly. 3) Place one buttered 12" circle of warqa, or two 12" buttered circles of filo pastry, in the centre of the pan. This forms the bottom of the pie. Cover the 12" circle with the chicken filling, and distribute the egg stuffing over the chicken.

2) Do not add water, and be careful not to burn the chicken or the sauce as this will ruin the dish.

4) Top the egg stuffing with another buttered 12" circle of warqa (shiny side up), or two 12" buttered circles of filo pastry. Spread the almond topping over this layer of dough.

3) Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate, and reduce the sauce in the pot until most of the liquids have evaporated and the onions form a mass in the oil. Stir occasionally, and adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning.

5) Fold the excess dough up and over the almonds to enclose the pie. Flatten and smooth any bulky areas.

4) While the sauce is reducing and the chicken is still warm, pick the meat off the bones, breaking it into small 2" pieces, Stir in several spoonfuls of the onion mixture, cover the meat, and set aside. TRAVEL to Where? Malaysia, South East Asia Exactly? The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat in Ipoh Why? This month we are celebrating International Women’s Day as well Mother’s Day, so we thought you deserved a little well-earned spa treatment and pampering. TheStyleTraveller flew

with? Malaysia Airlines - details below.

Where to stay?

The Banjaran Hotspring Retreat Nestled amidst a 16 acre valley, cradled by 260 million year old towering Paleozoic limestone hills and lush green rainforest, to say that the scenery at The Banjaran is spectacular, is a total understatement. The landscape is completely otherworldly, wandering around the steaming geothermal hot springs, natural caves and cascading waterfalls, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just arrived on the set of Jurassic Park the movie, minus the dinosaurs of course! The minute you arrive the warm humid air, sounds of wildlife and breathtaking surroundings send you straight into relax mode. The only thing you want to do is disconnect your phone, jump into the hot spring and immerse yourself in this wonderful, tropical environment. The hotel is impeccably designed with natural walkways leading you from the

stunning Zen open-air reception area to thatched roof, traditional Malaysian style buildings, such as the spa and restaurants. Everywhere you go you are accompanied by calming sounds and sights, gentle splashing water from the fountains, the peaceful gong which new guests are asked to drum to mark their arrival and romantic candle lit paths in the evening. The Rooms Every private villa is sophisticatedly decorated in a classic Lombok style, with expensive dark wood furnishings, indigenous tapestries and nature inspired artwork. But don’t let the traditional interiors fool you, all modern and luxury amenities are well and truly catered for, from wide screen TVs with surround sound to luxury spa products and rain showers in the bathrooms. Not only does each villa come with its own outdoor living room with hot tub, but you also get your own private swimming pool.

What to wear and packing?

When packing for Malaysia, specifically Ipoh, the main thing to bear in mind is the humidity. I went in rainy season, October, so the mornings were incredibly hot, with some rain in the afternoon, followed by a slight drop in temperature in the evening. Daytime attire in most spa resorts is very laid back and casual, you’ll most likely be wearing your swimsuit and the hotel spa gown around the grounds. For the pool pack a pretty kaftan or cover up. Flat sandals and wide leg trousers are great for sight seeing and also very on trend this season. For the evening ramp up the glamour factor, guests dress up for dinner and cocktails. Here are few pieces I would recommend you pack for your Malaysian sojourn. Orange kimono cover up Accessorize

Activities/what to do in the day?

For those seeking a little local culture the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur is a 2 hour drive away or discover the sights of the beautiful nearby colonial town of Taiping. There are plenty of local activities to keep you occupied from Chin’s pomelo farm, where you can learn about the local fruits growing process followed by a trip to the colourful night market. Or visit one of the many temples in the area. Wander around the magical gardens and landscaped pavilions of the Sam Poh Tong Temple (Cave of Triple Gem) or the Kek Lok Tong Temple (Cavern of Ultimate Bliss). To be honest, I very much doubt that you’ll want to leave the stunning, surroundings of The Banjaran.

From hot yoga in the caves, indulgent massage treatments at the idyllic spa and delicious healthy food served in the restaurant, everything about The Banjaran is geared up to you forgetting about the stresses of everyday life. Take a meditative walk through the jungle and of course dip into the natural hot springs, you’ll leave the retreat feeling blissfully pampered and rejuvenated. It’s the ultimate luxurious spa experience; the best present you could ever buy for your mum on mother’s day. I’m planning my next trip as we speak.

Dubai Food Festival 2015 Cooked Up A Flavoursome Event For All! by Harriet gyamfuah

The most dynamic, democratic and exciting expressions of food culture were to be found on beach level. With quality and passion most certainly found as key ingredients, the Dubai Food Festival (DFF) showcased glorious and creative cuisines; celebrating Dubai’s amazing multiculturalism scene.

Working up an appetite

This time round DFF’s Beach Canteen at Kite Beach, Jumeirah, was even bigger and better; with it being extended from 10days last year, to a mouth-watering 23days! For this second instalment of the Festival, residents and visiting foodies to Dubai were offered a unique dining experience. Ten home-grown pop-up restaurants such as Chez Sushi, Kris Kros, JJ Chicken and Rice Creamery – just to name a few, severed up a variety of finger licking dishes right on the beach front, alongside live entertainment in the form of DJs and local music performances. The Beach Canteen undoubtedly brings together not just a host of delicious flavours and innovative food concepts, but also the 200 various nationalities that live in Dubai, and the many more that visit from the region and afar.

A recipe for success

With 23 (fully indulgent) days, the Festival focused on four themes: • Emirati Cuisine: authentic, local cuisine and cultural experiences that showcased both traditional as well as upand-coming Emirati concepts and chefs • Home-grown: celebrated the emerging scene of independent restaurants and concepts influenced by the diversity of the 200 nationalities in Dubai • Multicultural Dining & Street Food: a showcase of a range of everyday, street-side restaurant and café experiences in Dubai, which offered great value and authentic flavours, that cater to communities across the city • International Chefs and Restaurants: a spotlight on the influx of restaurants conceived or owned by world leading and Michelin-starred chefs who, increasingly are choosing Dubai. Tingling the taste buds

Promoting the depth and diversity of the city’s gastronomic offering as it positions Dubai as a leading international hub for world-class food, DFF 2015 headliners included the Michelinstarred Jason Atherton, award-winning Greg Malouf, TV favourite Sanjeev Kapoor, Queen of the Arabic Kitchen, Manal Al Alem, criticallyacclaimed chef and best-selling author, Silvena Rowe, and the renowned Saudi Arabian Super Chef Yousef Khumayes, many of whom have restaurants in the Emirate. One of the signature events of Festival’s events was Dine On The Creek which was every foodies' dream come true and which included the above celebrity chef’s hosting special dinners on board traditional dhows and floating restaurants on Dubai Creek. The celebrity chefs served up speciallycrafted menus and were on hand to entertain guests with kitchen tales and stories from their celebrated careers. Each evening was filled with exceptional food and exceptional company, hence why it was continually a sell-out.

society IN CONVERSATION WITH THE AMBASSADOR

Of Turkey to Qatar By Mary Nisansala Jayaweera Photography Jessie Palanca

Ambassador of Turkey to Qatar His Excellency Ahmet Demirok delightfully noted that Turkey and Qatar share brotherly affiliations. Speaking exclusively to ABODE, Ambassador Demirok described how both nations were ‘rediscovering’ their societies through mutual support and understanding. Q. How has the time spent here in Doha been since your appointment in 2013? A. Turkey and Qatar are very close to one another. I deem myself one of the luckiest Ambassador’s of Turkey to be serving such a brotherly and friendly country. Our relations with Qatar are becoming better because we are living in the Middle East and cooperation between countries is very important. I am very happy to see the positive development between Turkey and Qatar.

Q. What are your impressions of Qatar as an Arab nation? A. Qatar has become an important country not only in the region but all over the world. Qatar is known to be a country involved in promoting peace and prosperity. Qatar is under construction right now and so it is changing rapidly. Qatar has very successfully built a modern nation on its traditions. People in Qatar are very keen to safeguard their traditions and to transfer them to the younger generation. Qatar is in the process of transformation right now from Old to New Qatar which is modern, more civilised and well established. Q. What ties bi-lateral or otherwise have Turkey maintained with Qatar? A. We have an excellent relationship with Qatar in every field. We are very close to one another in the field of Politics and International Relations because Turkey’s and Qatar’s approach in the region is very close to each other. Our countries are interested in building decent lives for

all the people living in the Middle East. Therefore Qatar and Turkey are striving for this end. In the fields of Economics and Trade we are working very hard to reach the same level as in the case of Politics. There is a huge interest from Qatar’s end to invest in Turkey. Turkey like Qatar is also a rising star as it is doing very well in its economy. Therefore I can say that Turkey and Qatar complete each other. Turkey is a very modern and developed country in terms of technology and science and Qatar is strong in its resources being one of the richest countries in the world. If you bring these two powers together we will have a better relationship in the field of trade and economy. We are very hopeful that many Turkish companies would like to invest in Qatar. At present, Turkish construction companies operating in Qatar are very successful. These companies have carried out US$ 15 billion projects in Qatar. We are very proud of it and we would like to have a bigger share from this cake especially during the 2022 Football World Cup series and within the 2030 Qatar National vision.

Q. How important is the idea of one’s culture to you? A. Culture is a very important part of our lives; I’ve served five different Western countries as a Diplomat. This is the first time I am serving a Middle Eastern country. So I can easily compare how culture affects your life. Usually it takes five to six months for a diplomat to become accustomed to the country you’ve been appointed. But in Qatar it only took my family 2 days to adjust to the new environment. Cultural affinity plays a major role; I feel at home here in Qatar because the Turkish people share a common culture with Qatar. We share a mutual understanding, the love we have for each other is genuine. Qatar has a special place in the heart of Turkish people; the interests of Turkey are the interests of Qatar. Q. Why is it important for Turkey to join Qatar in celebrating a cultural year? A. Qatar and Turkey now have a very open society; we are democratic and developed societies. That is why events such as the Cultural Year become important as they help get to know people. The Qatar-Turkey relationship dates back to the 16th century, 1538 to be precise when Qatar became

comprehensive cultural year; this is not a Ottoman territory. There was an intense one-way process but a two-way project. relationship between the people of Qatar Turkey will organize events in Qatar and and Turkey coming from the same culture Qatar will organize events in Turkey. This and sharing s common history. However is team work actually. Our Qatari partners there was an interruption in our history are very enthusiastic as they already because of the collapse of the Ottoman organized three similar events that were Empire. Currently, we are in the process highly successful; cultural years with Japan, of ‘rediscovering’ our society and so we UK and Brazil. We are planning the best expect the Turkish-Qatari culture to play a one because we have a lot of potential. major role to expedite this process. Every year the number of Qatari visitors to Turkey Another plus point is cultural affinity; we believe that Turkish events will attract is doubling; in 2013 it was 17,000 but in many more people thanks to the common 2014 it was 30,000. Our ultimate goal is to heritage and culture. Therefore the cultural host 300,000 Qatari visitors. Therefore we year agenda will include art, culture, have huge potential not only for touristic business, trade, community, education and purposes but also for investment as well. sport. We have a very deep history in Turkey and whenever Qatari people visit Turkey they feel at home. Moreover Turkey has become an important country in tourism; last year we hosted almost 40 million visitors in Turkey. It is one of the top destinations in the world right now. We have a tourism and hospitality sector that maintains high quality at affordable rates. Q. Could you give us a brief about plans made for the Qatar-Turkey Year of Culture? A. We would like to have a very

TURKEY The Ambassador shares with us the must visit destinations in Turkey Turkey is a beautiful country; you can enjoy the beach territory and also diversity in tourism, culture and nature. We can offer you the four seasons; while swimming in the beach, you can also go skiing. One could go trekking in the beautiful forests and then see diverse places. Anatolia is the cradle of civilization and it is a mosaic; I refer to the pre-history, Byzantine, Roman, Celtic, Ottoman and modern Turkey. We are the best in the world in terms of culture and civilization. The heart of many religions and faiths is in Anatolia therefore you can find something for everyone. Istanbul is the concentration of all culture and civilization; it is like an open museum. Then there is beautiful Bosphorus, the seas, we have the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean, nature and wildlife as well. It encapsulates the modern, traditional and historical Turkey. Every part of Turkey has a different characteristic. It is a safe and secure country. I cannot describe Turkey, you must go visit it.
