Welcome

from the desk of the editor-in-CHIEF

Dear readers, It is with great enthusiasm that I introduce our special March edition of ABODE Magazine to you all. Although it’s still quite chilly here in Doha, this issue will feature plenty of Spring trends to keep our style-savvy readers in the know about what's new in the realm of fashion in Doha and around the world, as it happens. It's currently Fashion Week in the four major capitals, with New York, London, Paris and Milan all showcasing the best of their own brands for the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2016 collections. Keep an eye out for our Editor Annabel's report on all the fresh trends next month in our April issue.

attended by none other than Her Excellency Dana Shell Smith, the United States Ambassador to Qatar, who opened all activities with great pride. Have a look on page 94 for some of the highlights.

The recent Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition was also a great success, with many celebrated brands returning to the exhibition –including each of the 500 that attended in 2015. The exhibition featured jewelry and watches workshops for designers to learn from experts in creating their own pieces and was a huge success. Educational seminars were also delivered throughout the week, enabling an even finer discernment of quality pieces to be attained through providing a deeper knowledge of the beautiful craft of fine jewelry making. Much to the excitement of attendees, ABODE was onhand as we distributed our esteemed magazine at the event.

We’ll also be shining a light on your health this month with various industry professionals providing us with crucial information on how to keep up to speed on our diets, (page 52), and our exercise regimes (page 54). Plus, be sure to read our tips on how to improve your overall vitality in our 'Health' section on page 56.

We also celebrated the Discover America – USA Week in Qatar with events all around Doha offering a stage for our American expats to give us a taste of the different traditions and cultures of their home country. Each event was

PIAGET

Love is in the air with Piaget Rose A declaration of love, a token of heartfelt affection, or the expression of the most intense passion, the rose seductively unfurls her radiant petals to take center stage. Creative muse of the maison, the Yves Piaget Rose reveals her many different sides through the audacious jewelry creations and timepieces of the Piaget Rose collection. Whether feminine, sophisticated, luscious, playful, or delicate, every resplendent flower cultivated in Piaget’s rose garden tells a unique story, a gift that makes the heart beat a little faster. With intensity and radiance, the ravishing rose becomes the ultimate symbol of unconditional love, while enhancing the beauty in every woman.

Displaying her more tender side, the Piaget Rose comes to life through the meticulous application of enamel on the silver dial of the Piaget Altiplano Rose email flinquĂŠ watch. A labor of love, the most subtle details and a masterful technique gives birth to an enchanting flower, defined by vibrant petals in shades of pink that exude radiance and grace.

10

In a feat of gem-setting virtuosity, the Piaget Rose secret watch set with 668 diamonds opens up to reveal the dial beneath. In white gold with a contrasting black strap or yellow gold with a white satin strap, this precious jeweled watch evokes the intensity of an impassioned declaration of love.

The Limelight Blooming Rose watch in white gold expresses the evolving nature of the queen of the floral kingdom, as four gem-set petals with their sensuous curves open up when the uppercase is swivelled around to reveal four new diamondpaved petals. Through a mysterious, invisible mechanism devised by Piaget, the diamonds shimmer in concert, giving the full flower its absolute radiance.

‘The Architect Of Design’ interview By annabel rooney Rihanna Photographed by STEVEN GOMILLION & DENNIS LEUPOLD @ FACTORY DOWNTOWN Tony Ward Couture Spring Summer 2014 embellished short dress for TUSH Magazine

Tony Ward is a Lebanese-Italian fashion designer born in Beirut who, at the exploratory age of 18, enrolled in the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris in hopes of pursuing a dream, a goal, and a lifelong passion of his; dressmaking.

30

TW

After seven years of working side by side with Claude Montana at Lanvin, Gianfranco Ferré at Christian Dior couture and then with Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé, Tony Ward slowly learnt the secrets of Haute Couture techniques and went it alone forging his own brand, Tony Ward Couture. After nearly 20 years in the business, it’s safe to say Tony Ward is a master of his craft. Our Editor Annabel caught up with him shortly before his big show in Paris for Fashion Week S/S 2016. ABODE: Tony, can you start by telling us a bit about what you are currently up to? TONY WARD: Well, right now we are looking at new markets and are in serious talks to include the Singapore Fashion Week. We participate in Paris Fashion Week for Couture and Ready-to-Wear, New York for Ready-to-Wear, Moscow for Couture, and Milan for our Bridal collection. We also participated in the Dubai Fashion Week last season, and it was a great success! ABODE: Your father, Elie Ward, was also a couturier, designing dresses for socialites and personalities of the 60's. What has been the biggest lesson you have learnt from him? TW: My father started the fashion house in 1965. He was one of the designers who used to work for Lebanon's elite and also frequently worked with international clients. I think the biggest thing he taught me was that the devil is in the detail!

ABODE: Have you created any pieces of couture for women in the Gulf? If so, what type of woman buys your dresses? TW: Middle Eastern and Khaleeji women are very sophisticated, fashionable and elegant. It's not surprising that they're often called the most beautiful women in the world! We are very proud of that. I am constantly challenged to create innovative designs adapted to this market, where women are fascinating and their sense of fashion an inspiration. Their style is a mix between Orient and Occident, which makes it all the more interesting. ABODE: In 2008, you launched your Readyto-Wear line of Tony Ward. How different is the design process between Couture, Bridal and Ready-to-Wear? TW: We have Couture, which is our highend line, then we have the Ready-to-Wear line, and then we started the Bridal Readyto-Wear business. The Ready-to-Wear lines are a deviation from the couture to more affordable, more adaptable collections for the European, Russian, and Chinese markets. Broadly speaking, they are more international and have ease of wear.

ABODE: Throughout your successful career, you have designed for countless celebrities, presenters and personalities and also ordinary women. What is the difference between the two clientele that you can share with us? ABODE: Did you find you had the same passion for designing TW: Designing for a celebrity is different in the sense that a celebrity both lines? is expected to convey a certain image that fits her current TW: Of course. Each line equally carries its own secrets and "persona". She often works with a personal stylist who already challenges and the need for creativity. has ideas and expectations for her. On the other hand, a regular client seeks to fulfill her own desires; I need to create a universe ABODE: What were the advantages and challenges of launching your Ready-to-Wear Bridal line in 2011? in which she projects herself; it is a more personal approach.

Tony Ward Spring / Summmer 2016 Couture Collection

TW: When you design lavish, high-end wedding dresses for clients with huge budgets, you are not catering to the middle classes or people who want to have small, down-to-earth weddings. Hence, we started our Readyto-Wear Bridal line to cater to these people. We launched it in Italy, and we have around 18 shops that purchase our collection there. After three years, we started to do Ready-to-Wear Bridal gowns for the Lebanese market, too. ABODE: In which countries would you say are the best to source your materials from? What are the most used fabrics for your garments? TW: We source from Italy a lot. They have the best techniques for Haute Couture fabrics. We have our custom-made Gazars produced there, as well as hand-painted Brocades

and one-of-a-kind Organza fabrics. ABODE: What more can we expect from your extraordinary line of couture in the coming months? TW: We are working on developing new embroidery techniques while creating volume and lightness at the same time. There are a lot of exciting creations coming up soon!

Mahmoud Sidani Interview by Laura Prior

Forging new ground is never easy, but it sure can be fun! Step up Mahmoud Sidani a.k.a Mr. Moudz! Lebanese-born and Saudi-bred, he and a handful of other young, cool cats are trailblazing the male blogging scene with style and panache. Personality and passion by the trunk-load, Mr. Moudz is living out his lifestyle dreams in what he describes as 'a bloggers paradise' - Dubai. Having spotted a gap in the market for men's fashion writing, he is carrying on a family tradition of dressing to impress into the digital age. It's clear to see why his followers are captivated by his zest for life and fascination with fashion, but, what's it really like 'being Mr. Moudz'? We find out. 34

A

BODE: Take us back to where your love of fashion began.

MR MOUDZ: My passion for fashion came from my mother and my grandmother. I remember from a young age that they always loved to dress up and I saw how they were able to express themselves through clothing. That really spoke to me and is undoubtedly what's lead to my obsession with style and fashion.

way that you represent yourself? I try to be witty when I’m writing. I never want my readers to feel that I am programmed. Through that I feel that I can take more risks when it comes to dressing myself. ABODE: What do you think it is about you that attracts followers? MM: I like to think that I take my followers on a journey. Wherever I go, my followers go. From the people I am lucky enough to be around, to the places I am fortunate enough to visit, to the things I wear. These are all things that attract and keep followers.

ABODE: What inspired you to start a blog? MM: I was always asked about what I was wearing or about the places I was traveling to so I thought that a blog would be the perfect way to share all that. It occurred to me that people could get a more in-depth and personal look into my world. Blogging means that you have a responsibility to provide your readers with knowledge on your latest findings. Everything from what brands you are wearing to what hotels you like to stay at and why. You get to interact with them directly and that inspires me.

ABODE: What's it like being a guy in fashion blogging and how is the male blogging arena evolving in the Middle East?

ABODE: Sum up your personal style Mr. Moudz loves: Cartier Bracelets

MM: I feel lucky to be in it at this time as the male market is still not very saturated. We're a small bunch of bloggers in the region and we are all friends. Each of us has such a different sense of style, so it allows us to stand out in our own way. Conversely, the women’s market has become so over-saturated that there is now more focus being put on the male arena. Many brands that never even considered male bloggers for projects are now approaching us to collaborate, which is great.

in Silver, Gold and Rose Gold MM: It’s such a mix. I love to put high-street fashion with designer and mix and match. I’m a big fan of basics and am always throwing in one key item that ABODE: When you are not wearing your blogging hat what else really makes the outfit. Generally though, I dress based on how I’m do you like to do? feeling that day. Describe your writing style and how much does this influence the MM: I am a big lover of traveling. I feel like a life not traveled is a life

35

not lived. There is so much this world has to offer, so many people to meet, so many stories to hear about. Traveling and meeting new people that inspire me is definitely a big passion of mine. I am also a huge adrenaline junkie. I love to go on crazy rides and do heart pounding activities. Nothing compares to that feeling of fear and excitement at the same time. ABODE: Finish this sentence…”Life’s too short for…” MM:...worrying! When something bad happens, don’t panic, it has already happened and you can't change that. Just think about what the next best move is. ABODE: What’s your advice for new bloggers? MM: Be original, have a vision and believe in yourself. So many people are out here doing the exact same thing so you won't stand out if you just follow the crowd. Be confident enough to be your own person. I’ve learnt that everyone is trying to make it in this

world. Help another person and when you can, be kind. Helping someone else with their success will never dampen your own. ABODE: How does blogging help represent men in a positive light? MM: It has allowed men to be seen in a lighter sense, one that is creative and not so stereotypical. The men’s blogging scene has huge opportunities and in my opinion we are flying the flag very well. ABODE: What ’s coming up for you in 2016? MM: My ultimate goal is to grow the Mr. Moudz brand to a point where it covers so many different sectors of the industry; everything from fashion, to lifestyle, restaurants and cafes and even to distribution but a big focus is being put on the Mr. Moudz consultancy this year. There are so many possibilities out there and to me, it's all about collaborations.

Splash Love For The Planet

6th edition of the Splash Calendar The world we live in is plagued with issues that need our immediate attention and it requires us to come together as one community to address challenges the modern society faces. The Splash Limited Edition Calendar - Love For The Planet, takes the fashion route to help raise awareness. The stunning calendar was unveiled by Mr Raza Beig, C.E.O, Splash and ICONIC at a glittering party at his residence. ABODE took him to one side and asked him about Splash's latest venture. 40

A

BODE: How is Splash different from other high street brands? RAZA BEIG: Splash was the first high street brand in the region to cater to the fashion needs of the modern Arab family. Over the last 24 years, we have kept a record of the changing fashion needs and ever-changing environment and have an in-depth knowledge of the values and traditions of this region, unlike most of the competition that only cater to the current needs. The reason Splash has continued to grow in spite of the intense competition is because our customers trust us and know that we will deliver our promise of 'Fashion, Value and Quality'.

ABODE: What's next for Splash in Qatar? RB: Qatar is progressing at a very fast pace on all fronts and so is the retail industry. We are ensuring that we are a part of this growth but with growth comes expectations, and we intend on meeting up to all of the expectations be it expression, trends or quality. ABODE: What are your highlights from the Splash Spring/Summer 2016 collection? RB: Our S/S '16 collection is very fresh and colorful which includes shades of pink, coral and blue with added monochrome for extra depth and subtlety. White-on-white is also another great trend to follow.

Tailored Solutions for your skin After a skin consultation, your therapist will recommend one of the four serums available that would be best for your skin: • Lumixil Solution: improve the appearance of discolorations and achieves a more even tone. • Clarifying Solution: provides relief for the most sensitive, acne prone skin. • Hydration Solution: a nutrient-rich moisturizing formula developed to moisturize the dryest of skin. • Vitamin C Solution: the potent antioxidant formula infuses your skin with an arsenal of targeted antioxidants to protect against free-radical damage.

ByeBye Stretch Marks!

It's all in the tools! Brushes, Make Up For Ever Ever wondered how Angelina achieves those perfect cheekbones? Or how Scarlett gets that Au Naturelle glow? The secret lies in all the brushes their makeup artists use, although they may be a little bulky to store in your already jam-packed handbag. Worry no more, as this set by Make Up For Ever comes with a pouch that's compact and trendy. Oh, did we say that the brushes are gentle and soft on the face too? A definite must-have!

Three years ago I interviewed a plastic surgeon and he told me that stretch mark creams have close to zero effect on our skin. Nowadays, things have changed and many women are raving about Bio Oil. In 2010, a stretch mark study was done in Germany where 38 women were asked to apply Bio Oil twice daily without additional massage on the problem areas such as the abdomen, thighs and hips. After an 8-week test, 100% of the ladies showed an improvement in their skin tone. What is this Bio Oil? It has won 253 skincare awards; it’s manufactured in accordance with cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) and is free from adulterated ingredients!

Beauty tutorial Full lashes make your eyes look awake and vibrant, but the problem is, not all of us were born with them. Make Up For Ever have different kinds of fake lashes ranging from thick lashes, lashes with gems for the lavish party, and lashes with splashes of colour are available too! The pro's at Make Up For Ever tell us their step-by-step process of how they do it: • Apply a thin coat of mascara to your eyelashes to lengthen, easing the application of the false lashes. Gently remove the false lashes from their case, taking care not to tear them. • Measure the length of the false lashes to suit your eyelash line but be sure to leave 1 mm from the inner corner of the false lash strip and the inner corner of the eye to prevent any irritation or a stinging sensation from occurring.

48

• Apply eyelash glue to the false lash strip. Apply a little more glue to the inner and outer corners, because it's always harder to get them to stick to the eyelid. Let the glue dry for a few seconds before applying the false lashes so that it thickens and adheres better to the eyelid. • Glue the false lashes to the center of your natural eyelash line. Try to glue the false lashes as closely as possible to your natural eyelash line. Use the tip of the tweezers to glue the inner and then the outer corner of false lashes.

What'swith this word Organic'? What's the meaning of organic, you ask? Beware, not every product that says it's organic means it's organic. The definition is 'without artificial ingredients', however, many beauty products claim that they are natural, and their ingredients are organic but how can you be so sure that you are using the real one? We have listed a few things to consider when buying your organic beauty products: • Check if there is a USDA Organic label – this means that the ingredients in the product are 95% or more organic, free from synthetic ingredients, and it is produced by approved methods. • The fewer ingredients, the better. It means you are not exposing yourself to too many irritants. • Does the product contain Bismuth Oxychloride? The FDA approved of this as a coloring agent used in cosmetics, although according to Sciencelab.com, it's likely to irritate the skin because of its crystalline shape. • Parabens – are preservatives used in beauty products. New research studies show that it can contribute to the growth of certain breast cancers. Be mindful of what you are putting on your skin, but the good news is more and more beauty companies are competing to better their products.

Makeuptrends There’s Something about colors! Pink is always associated with youth, the freshness it brings and the innocence it portrays are always impressed with this color. On the other hand, neutrals present a sense of maturity and confidence. Frederico Lucci, Pupa’s International Trainer and Makeup Artist, states that these are the “go-to shades” this season. Compiled by Marisela Paesano and Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography courtesy of Merch Qatar

Beauty Q&A

A Masterclass with Neveen Shalaby Beauty questions answered by Neveen Shalaby Givenchy’s Regional Make-Up Artist in the Middle East and India By Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography by Jessie Palanca Location: Wojooh at Landmark Mall

This month, we invited Neveen Shalaby, Givenchy’s Regional Make-Up Artist in the Middle East and India, to chat with us and detail the challenges of being a professional make-up artist. Read on for tips by Neveen as we give her the death-defying task of hiding our blemishes, and how you can do it at home. Neveen Shalaby’s tousled hair and impeccable makeup are not to be missed, and her character is to be admired. With 12 years of experience in the beauty industry, she has worked up a passion for beautifying women and an urge to learn keeps her on top of her game.

A

BODE: What is makeup to you? Neveen Shalaby: When you say makeup, it’s the lipstick, the powder, the foundation – everything you see in the cosmetics section. There’s a deeper meaning – for me it’s my companion to enhance and ‘beautify’ a woman’s features, not to mask the face but to celebrate the uniqueness of each individual.

50

ABODE: Through your years of being in this industry, what is the most essential thing you have learned? NS: Not every beauty rule applies for all. The beauty in this industry is that you can always create and be creative. My clients are all different, so I treat them differently, and there’s always a sense of ownership that my clients can always embrace, it is like a couture dress that is fashioned only for you

We have to think that we need to learn more every day SO THAT you can teach the people around you. If you keep that attitude, you’ll be on your way to being more of a success because people will respond to you in a positive way. What you give is what you’ll eventually receive.

do you keep Q.How motivated?

A.

I always want to learn, I cannot say that I know everything because makeup is like fashion, it keeps on evolving. As the saying goes, "No man is an island", that is why I listen to my client’s and my seniors’ opinion to better myself and serve my clients in the best way that I can. It’s a continual journey of learning, it never stops. - Neveen

Beauty Hotline: Hiding the Blemishes Kim Xoxo

face has some Q.My discolour ation, may be because of constant sun exposure, how can I deal with it?

A.

You should start with a proper skin care treatment for skin discoloration. It’s critical to have a suitable cleanser to clean the skin, I suggest Doc White of Givenchy. The serum is to be applied twice daily (morning and evening) and lastly, the moisturiser from the same brand. This is very effective in treating pigmentation; results are seen after 28 days.

Givenchy's products are available at WOJOOH Landmark and City Centre.

Abigail Xoxo

have occasional Q.Ibreakouts. How can

I apply my makeup to hide my acne? Can you give me five steps that I can do?

A.

Let’s make it shorter and give you just four steps:

Fatma Xoxo

acne left a couple of Q.My scars on my face, can

you teach me how to hide it quickly?

A.

It depends on the kind of scars you have. If they are red, you can use a green corrector such as Acti Mine to be applied directly to the scars, followed by a concealer.

It’s important to have a good moisturiser, of course if your skin is acne-prone you’re more likely to have a combination-to-oily skin. You need to use a good product like Hydra Sparkling for a normal to combination skin moisturiser.

• Then primer, use Mister Smooth. • Followed by a foundation with natural coverage, Teint Couture Balm, will help to keep your acne looking less visible. • Lastly, use loose powder. Lightly dust your face to keep the shine away. It’s that easy!

What You Eat

is ‘You’

By Rowad Ehlela (Fitness Professional) and Dina Labuchagne (Dietician), Evolve

Living in a fast-paced environment such as Doha can be very tasking on the body - lack of sleep and no energy almost becomes the norm rather than an exception, but how do we counteract this and ensure that we take care of our health? Fatigue and stress can have detrimental effects on our bodies with both physical and mental strain a daily occurrence, in turn making us feel drained and more susceptible to illness, depression and other health related conditions.

O

ur eating habits are not only there to encourage weight loss, which is the common focus of today’s health market, but also to supply our bodies with enough energy to perform, as well as boost our immune system and improve our metabolism. Here’s how:

Eating For Energy

Food is the Fuel that drives our bodies and without the right type of “fuel”, our bodies cannot perform optimally. An important point to remember is that we need to spread out our energy intake to sustain us throughout the day. High sugary foods like sodas or candy bars will give you an instant energy boost but after that, your energy levels will drop quickly, giving you an inadequate amount to carry on with your daily tasks. Here are some tips for sustained energy levels: Eat five meals per day (three Main meals with two Snacks): Eating smaller meals more frequently will provide your brain with a steady supply of nutrients to maintain and function optimally.

Breakfast: Have a power breakfast! The name 'breakfast' originated from break the fast; this is seen as the first meal after a full night of fasting. Therefore, it is important to re-fuel your body and brain with the nutrients needed to combat the day ahead. Always make time to eat well in the morning – porridge with blueberries is a sure way of empowering the body- creating lasting energy. Include more foods rich in Vitamin B: B vitamins are known as little powerhouses due to their involvement in many processes that yields energy for our bodies. Food sources of Vitamin B include; Fish, meat, egg, dairy products, lentils, legumes and fortified cereals and grains.

52

Boosting your Immune System

There are always plenty of viruses and colds and flu going around and if you're trying to prevent them start by looking in your own kitchen before running for medicine. Start including some high Vitamin C foods in your daily life, Vitamin C stimulates the formation of antibodies and protects us from infection, keeping our immune systems strong. Vitamin C rich foods: • Oranges •Lemons • Strawberries • Blueberries • Kiwi fruit • Grapefruit • Papaya • Spinach and kale.

Revving up your Metabolism

Have you ever heard someone say "you have a slow metabolism that is why you struggle with weight loss"? Even though your dietary choices can have a supportive or destructive effect on your metabolism, there is a combination of other factors that can affect a person’s metabolism. Hormone imbalances, age, gender, height genetics as well as the liver and digestive system all play a significant role in the way our body burns or stores fat. Here are a few food choices that tend to accelerate your metabolism: • Ginger • Grapefruit • Lemons • Blueberries • Apple Cider vinegar • Water • Protein foods, especially at breakfast time

Blast the Fats in 30 Minutes!

Including a 30-minute exercise routine into your day is guaranteed to provide you with a balanced and fulfilled lifestyle, especially when you are eating right! Here’s some 30-minute exercises that will have you blasting the calories and feeling rejuvenated!

1. HIIT – High-Intensity Interval Training (400-500 calories) This is the number one workout for hitting the calories hard in a limited amount of time! This includes burpees, lunges, squats, short sprints, press ups and jumping jacks. With limited rest time and high-intensity exercise your body burns calories at an excelled rate when compared to other functional workouts. 2. Zumba (250-350 calories) Have fun and burn calories as you dance and twist your way into shape! 3. Jogging (300 calories) Light paced jogging at a consistent speed can burn up to 300 calories for the average individual. 4. Swimming (300 calories) Burn around 300 calories while improving muscle strength and conditioning – breaststroke will tone the arms and core while burning away those calories. 5. Spinning (450-550 calories) Spinning is an excellent calorie burner – depending on how hard you cycle, you can burn up to 550 calories in 30 minutes.

Health Buzz Let’s take an in-depth look at the latest trends in health and wellness. compiled by marlynne de la pena

Are you getting enough sleep? Do you snore loudly when asleep? Or do you feel tired even after an 8-hour sleep? You might have sleep apnea. It’s a chronic sleeping disorder when breathing pauses for brief moments, and then normal breathing starts again. Types of Sleep Apnea • Obstructive Sleep Apnea – occurs when the throat muscle relax. • Central Sleep Apnea – occurs because your brain doesn't send proper signals to the muscles that control your breathing. • Complex Sleep Apnea – is the combination of both Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central Sleep Apnea

ts Red Alert! Dangers of Fad Die

What is a Fad Diet?

What are the dangers?

• Since you are losing water and not fat, you’ll end up dehydrated so instead of looking healthy you’ll look dry – not just your skin, but your hair too! • You need food to fuel your body to function properly throughout the day. The daily recommended calorie intake for adults vary but the average is 2000 calories. Fad diets always contain fewer (and fewer!) calories that tend to leave you feeling tired and irritated. • If the body doesn’t receive proper vitamins and minerals, it will end up being malnourished. Fad diets restrict you from eating carbs and fat that are significant for the body’s functioning.

It promises unrealistic weight loss in a very short space of time that is unhealthy; the drop in weight usually comes from the loss of water and lean muscle mass. But why are we still hooked on them? Because they play on an integral part of human interest – looking good and being ‘healthy’, in the shortest amount of time with zero exercise. Apparently if you are very slim, you are healthy and beautiful, which is not always the case. I was once a victim of ‘crash diets’, trying the cabbage soup diet for a week, the no-carb diet, Slim Fast drinks in exchange for two-meals a day and went to the extent of trying diet pills. After I had stopped the drastic diets, of course, I reverted to my old overweight self. One thing is for sure; these diets aren't a long-term weight loss regime to follow as they eventually put your health in jeopardy.

Thyroid disorders are a very common occurrence; however, most often they go undiagnosed. According to the American Thyroid Association, up to 60% of people suffering from thyroid-related conditions are unaware of it. Statistics from the Association also showed that women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems and that one woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Figures quoted during the Otolaryngology Conference and Exhibition in Dubai, held in 2013, stated that roughly 5% of patients in the Middle East have thyroid disease. CColor o l o r YoYour u r HoLife! m e, 6 TIPS ON HOW TO DECORATE WITH COLORS By Chloe Egglestone, Decorator of The One Photos courtesy of The One

Colors, colors, and more colors, but how do you mix and match all of them harmoniously? The right color combination can liven up any subdued area but a mismatched interior spells a fiasco! So what can you do? Chloe Egglestone, the interior decorator for The One, will guide you through the ins and outs of designing your home!

3 1 60

Create harmony by using a tonal color scheme that creates a feeling of harmony and a more restful atmosphere. For example, using many shades of the same color or very similar tones; white, cream, or beige, creates a feeling of relaxation. This is ideal for rooms where you’re searching for peace of mind from the day such as family rooms or bedrooms.

2

Don’t be afraid of colors! Choosing to decorate with color doesn’t have to mean a bold color on every wall or a cacophony of colors throughout the house. A bold accented color in an otherwise neutral room can have a great effect. You can achieve this with an accent wall, a statement piece of furniture or even just a beautiful vase of flowers.

Look out for complementary colors. Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green. A combination of these colors creates a striking visual effect which is more suitable for the living or dining areas of the home.

Test Drive your color!

favourite store or , on-trend color in your ng azi am an n see u yo Have ration without test Don’t rush into redeco ? use ho ’s nd frie st be your appear differently me first. 4

Create flow. Many homes have an open plan living area or linked rooms, so create a harmonious space by utilising your color scheme throughout the area. For example, if your sofa is green, use the same green for seat fabric in the dining room.

5 6

Balance is key. Whatever combination of colors you do choose to use, it is important to balance the intensity of the colors. All the most successful multicolored schemes are composed of a range of colors which all have the same amount of white or black in their composition.

Don’t forget to add black and white. Adding a black element will clarify and enhance all of the other colors in the space and white will alter the balance of light in the room.

step 1 PREPARE ALL THE Ingredients: For the Chilean Sea Bass:

. . . 1¼ tsp. Crushed black pepper . 1 pinch of saffron

.

1 sprig Thyme 1½ cup Mushrooms 1½ cup Fresh cream 1½ tsp. Salt

For the Risotto:

.

½ cup Raw risotto rice 1 tbsp. Finely chopped onion

For the Coriander Bisque:

.

. 1 clove of garlic

.

1 tsp. Extra Virgin olive oil 3 tbsp. Butter 1 cup Fresh coriander leaves 2 cups Seafood stock reduction

.

step 2 . Season the sea bass with salt, pepper, thyme, and 1 tsp. olive oil and set aside. Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp. of olive oil in a frying pan, add the mushrooms, salt, and pepper and sauté for 2 minutes.

. To prepare the coriander bisque for the risotto, add 1 cup of freshly chopped coriander leaves into the seafood stock reduction and blend it with butter until it's a smooth consistency. Finally, add 1 tsp. olive oil and salt and continue mixing until it forms a bright green, smooth paste. Set this aside

step 4

step 3 . To prepare the risotto, heat up 1 tsp. olive oil in another pan and sauté the chopped garlic and onions on low heat for 2 minutes. Once cooked, add the risotto and sauté until it's piping hot. Add the prepared coriander bisque into the pan and cook until the desired consistency is achieved. Preferably cook until it is what the Italians call "al dente". Finish the risotto by mixing in 1 tbsp. of butter and set it aside.

. Heat up the non-stick frying pan and add 5 tbsp. of olive oil. Sear the sea bass and cook for approximately 7-8 minutes. *Tip from the Chef: When placing the seabass into the pan, place scales facing down first. This will protect the flesh of the fish while the pan is still piping hot.

. Heat the sauce

. Pour the saffron

pan, add butter, saffron threads, chopped onions, garlic and stir until the onions are cooked and saffron gets to its solid phase. Sprinkle some fresh thyme and add the seafood stock while bringing to boil. Finish with fresh cream and season with salt and pepper.

Sizzling Cold Coffee! The population of today loves to socialize and what a better way to do all that chatting than over a cup of coffee! With all the burgeoning coffee shops in the city, they each differ in size, flavours and services but what if you hear that the coffee they serve in Brew Parlor at the Wyndham Grand Regency Doha is a “cold-brew”? We tried and tested it, and it’s an exciting experience! Sipping on this cold-brew coffee as we chat to our friends and family makes these outings all the more worthwhile! By Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography by Anthony Tahlier

Who is behind this ‘cold-brew’ coffee in Brew Parlor? Mark Anderson, Vice President of Food and Beverage for the Wyndham Grand Regency Doha says, “We believe travel should be approachable by design, where everyday experiences like the quick cup of coffee - our Wyndham Grand Regency hotels serve hundreds of thousands of times a day - are transformed into moments to savour.” This was echoed by the Wyndham Grand Regency Doha’s Chef de Caffeine Stephanie Izard, “As a chef, I’ve always

put a lot of care into the coffee I serve. I’ve worked with the Wyndham Grand Regency Doha to find a coffee that is not only tasty on its own, but also one that serves as a base for creative flavours.” What are the benefits of cold-brew? Coffee is universal – but it’s becoming more artisanal and innovative. At the Wyndham Grand Regency Doha we focus on cold brew, the microbrew of coffee. Cold brew gives us the opportunity to offer guests what they love while kicking things up a notch with hand-crafted and infused

creations that reflect worldly tastes. We want to bring what is best about coffee culture into the hotel — and have not only that coffeehouse level of comfort and familiarity but also create a place where new experiences can be formed. What is the process? Cold-brewed coffee is made by steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water over the course of 12 to 24 hours, producing a condensed, smooth and full flavor. It’s the microbrew of coffee. The results produce a rich, concentrated beverage with 67% less acidity as compared to the traditional hot drip method. Flavor profiles can vary simply by stylizing darker roasts or combinations and styles of beans.

For more information: Wyndham Grand Regency Doha’s Brew Parlor is available for guests from 4 pm – 6 pm, Sunday – Thursday - reservations can be made on +974 4434 3333.

Fuego Fuego is set in the new Shangri-la Hotel and delivers culinary fire and showcases the passion of the Argentine pampas for diners who wish to channel their inner 'gauchos' (a cowboy!). Lively, fun and engaging, it offers the finest selection of prime beef prepared in the time-honoured traditions of the Argentine grill. BY MARISELA PAESANO PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSIE PALANCA

The restaurant has an earthy feel and an inviting atmosphere. The interior designers used mostly natural materials such as wood, stone and leather which contributes to the overall rustic look of the restaurant. Also, the friendly atmosphere is enhanced by a lovely repertoire of Argentine folk music performed by a professional duo. The music was sublime and took me back on a journey to my beautiful South American land. The charming and efficient staff are all from South America too, so I really felt like I was at home. Our dinner began with Fuego's Signature Empanadas, which are inspired by the chef’s travels around the world. Four different dishes from different

countries with four distinctive styles were presented before us, the first being a dish from Argentina: a traditional beef empanada from the northwest. A Chinese dish was up next with a duck confit and Malbec-flavoured plums inside a wonton wrapper served for us to enjoy. Next up was a gem from Italy: a basil dough filled with spicy sausage, mozzarella and tomato. Finally, Qatari food found its way onto our plates and into our hearts and consisted of a yellow-gold dough topped with gold leaf and filled with a tagine-style chicken. I could eat plates full of their empanadas, in fact, one portion was not enough to share and a second was ordered to prevent war at our table! Truly mouth

watering food, brava! We also tried the Ravioli de Carne Braseada, a delicious blend of European and Argentine styles: this braised beef ravioli was served with homemade chilli sauce on one side and Grilled Provoleta cheese, Provoleta is a native cheese from Argentina and is grilled on the outside and served wonderfully melted on the inside. All starters were accompanied by a homemade Chimichurri sauce that will have you coming back for more, every time. It is served with all dishes and after the first bite, you’ll discover why – it’s just delicious. Chimichurri is made from finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, vegetable oil, white or red vinegar,

We began our lunch with their madein-house bread, a selection of warm, delicious and irresistible bread served with creamy butter. For starters, we shared the Antipasto assortito which is a generous plate of assorted appetizers with a choice of cheese, meat, olives and pickles and the Insalata de spinaci novella, a fresh spinach salad with goats cheese, mushroom, sun dried tomatoes and walnuts. Both starters are simple yet delicious, but what makes the difference is the organic, fine ingredients they use. For our mains, we ordered home-

74

made Spaghetti alla chitarra Bisanzio, a square spaghetti with slow-roasted cherry tomatoes and basil. The pasta was comforting, starchy and slippery, which makes the sauce cling to it perfectly. The Risotto alla Certosina, a seafood risotto, is a flavoured dish of tender risotto and is full of calamari, shrimps, mussels and clams, the result is a delicious, delectable and creamy concoction! This was a great seafood experience, definitely the highlight of our lunch. Craving something special for dessert, we tried the Tiramisu which was

certainly delicious and lives up to its reputation as the most popular coffeeflavoured Italian dessert! The Millefoglie alle fragile e salsa al caramello is a magnificent dessert made of three layers of puffed pastry filled with cream and fresh strawberries topped with caramel sauce, it was an absolute delight to eat. After such a pleasant lunch we can certainly agree that this legendary Italian restaurant delivers a fashionable, relaxed ambience and a luscious, authentic Italian flare by using the freshest seasonal ingredients.

From the charms of Muscat’s old town, to pristine beaches, lush greenery and rugged mountains, this is truly a destination with something for everyone. Here are some of ABODE’s best tips on where to stay, where to dine and were to go.

Chu Teh-Chun • Born: 1920 - Xiao County, China • Died: 2014 - Paris, France Chu Teh-Chun was a Chinese painter who embraced abstraction after a move to Paris in the mid-twentieth-century. He began his education in traditional Chinese painting at Hangzhou’s School of Fine Arts, where Lin Fengmian was the principle and Zao Wou-Ki, a fellow student. In 1949, he moved to Taipei where he taught at the National University before moving to Paris in 1955. The move to Paris dramatically affected his approach to art and he was particularly influenced by the abstract works of Nicolas de Staël, which lead to a move away from figurative painting to evocative, abstract landscapes.

Jean Dubuffet • Born: 1901 - Le Havre, France • Died: 1985 - Paris, France Jean Dubuffet is widely recognized as the most innovative artist in post-war France. A pioneer of outsider art or ‘art brut’, Dubuffet sought to redefine aesthetic norms by drawing on the art of children, iconoclasts and the insane. In his view, because mainstream culture would systematically appropriate and sterilise artistic developments, authentic art could only be created spontaneously, without concern for any audience. Ian Davenport • Born: 1966 - Sidcup, Kent, USA Ian Davenport is famous for his abstract paintings on which colour is applied in vertical strips and ellipses. He studied at Goldsmiths’ College of Art in London, graduating in 1988. During the war, he met Sonia Delaunay, who introduced him to abstract art. Frank Stella • Born: 1936 - Malden, Massachusetts Frank Stella is an American painter, printmaker and sculptor whose work in minimalism and post-painterly abstraction has had a profound influence on visual art since the 1960s.
