Welcome

This issue, ABODE is grateful to the people behind our fashion spread - The Global Glamour. It was a challenging and fulfilling photo shoot made possible by Andrea, Baiba and Chet. With support from Glow American Salon, Melanie Isakowits with our five beautiful models and of course, to the locations where we did our shoots; Grand Hyatt Doha, Megu Restaurant and Doha Golf Club.

from the desk of the editor-in-CHIEF

Dear readers,

I

t’s my pleasure to welcome you to the spring pages of May’s Abode. With summer holidays looming on the horizon we put on our globe-trotter hats to bring you our annual Travel Issue. We’ll help make the world your oyster with five luxurious destinations at your fingertips in this edition as we explore the culinary and cultural hotspots of Spain, Italy and Monaco. Then it’s off to swinging London for a jaunt around the UK’s capital hub, before jet-setting off to utopia in the Maldives. We also know that summer can be the ultimate time to relax at home with family and friends, so if staycations are more your style, then why not do it five-star at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski? Abode checked in to Doha’s newest luxury resort for a weekend of pampering, indulgence and – most importantly – sheer relaxation! What would a vacation be without a little bit of pre-planning jitters, however? We show you how to minimize that stress with our ultimate traveller’s checklist to help ensure smooth sailing all the way to your destination and back.

In Fashion this month Abode was honoured to work with Doha-based, Latvian photographer Baiba Jakubaite, whose vibrant vision and keen eye bring to life some truly international looks in our main photo-spread. From earthy tones and detailed embellishments, to rich fabrics and colours, we showcase apparel from around the globe with pieces inspired by Qatar, Korea, Japan, Mexico and Africa. We’re also proud this month to introduce our readers to the evertalented Scarlett Johansson in an in-depth interview with the A-list Hollywood actress as she gets ready to take to the screen in the latest installment of the Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theatres this month. We talk life, family and the perils of Hollywood as she takes us behindthe-scenes on-set. And finally, in our Beauty, Food and Home sections we tackle the compelling task of gearing up for summer – from protecting your skin

from the damaging rays of the sun, to cool and tasty treats perfect for summer, you’ll find it all in our pages this May. As always, we hope you enjoy all Abode has to offer.

Bedazzled! by MARISELA PAESANO

Handsome, elegant, receptive, eloquent‌you simply run out of words to describe Edoardo Caovilla, Creative Director of the legendary shoe brand Rene Caovilla.

A

BODE spoke to this charismaoozing Italian about his origins, inspirations, and the DNA of the brand when he was in town last April for a special appearance at Rene Caovilla boutique at the Pearl, Qatar to present the 2015 spring summer collection. ABODE: Ever since its launch 80 years ago, the brand has aimed at sophistication through the use of highest quality materials including Swarovski. Was it a conscious decision to create iconic pieces of footwear

exclusively for the elite? EDOARDO: Since the beginning of our history, my grandfather concentrated on the elite and became a sculptor of sophisticated, elegant jeweled masterpieces. Immaculate detailing with elaborate embellishments, high quality jewels and dazzling Swarovski has defined the brand. Our partnership with Swarovski is very strong, and we are the biggest Swarovski buyer in the world. A: Where does the inspiration for shoes

ABODE May-PS.indd 8

designed for a desert climate come from? E: I like to come to Qatar and learn about the culture and the ways Qatari women understand fashion. I have also met some refined women and have had some cultural interaction. It fascinates me the way they live fashion here, like no other place in the world, not in Europe or America. They enjoy luxury the way it should be, without restriction, just like a dream. They like to wear shoes to make an impact and leave an impression. The exquisite craftsmanship and the innovative techniques are therefore, the DNA of the brand. A: In keeping with this exquisite craftsmanship and detailing we are expecting some unusually beautiful pieces for the spring summer collection? E: Luxury is no longer limited for special occasions; luxury is about being special in every moment of life. So, I like giving the luxury touch to casual looks. Women nowadays are more active and wish to feel unique 24 hours a day, and I want to bring that preciousness and uniqueness in their lives. We have created glitzy variations on styles from espadrilles to sandals to evening shoes. In the S/S collection, we use pastel colors, including green, blues yellow, and pink. We wanted to add a feminine touch on dainty flats and heeled sandals. Thick embroidery and little studs make their way onto sneakers, transforming an edgy shoe into something a little more flirtatious and whimsical.

A: What sparked the idea of using the “serpent” as the iconic design element of the brand?

in other markets we have to blend in and know the market well. So, I try to travel often to Qatar to understand the culture, and I’m lucky to have made many friends here.

E: My grandfather came up with this idea. In ancient times, Egyptians and Romans used to wear bracelets with the shape of a serpent in their arms. It was a symbol of bellowing to a prominent family or group. So, he thought to incorporate this symbol into our shoes, and have the “serpent” around your feet, and create a brand identity. Women that wear our shoes can feel they belong to a luxury elite, The Rene Caovilla family.

In terms of the product range, there are certain projects that aim at the boutique’s expansion, staying true to the original and outstanding elegance of Caovilla.

A: How do you plan to exercise your role as a Creative Director to make the Rene Caovilla brand bigger and more versatile for the Qatari audience? Where do you see the Rene Caovilla brand in five years from now? E: I believe the role of a Creative Director is outside his office. In order to succeed

Rene Caovilla creations have enraptured the wearer and distinguished the most beautiful and sophisticated women in the world, and this is just the beginning for Edoardo Caovilla to let the brand’s elegant, international customers dream bigger!

With the brand tying up with several of the biggies in the fashion industry such as Valentino Garavani, Christian Dior, John Galliano, Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld, it has emerged from just a jewelry shoes brand to a global women’s accessory brand.

PROFILE BY JAN JANSSEN, VIVA PRESS

Hollywood screen siren Scarlett Johansson has carved out a new niche for herself as a big-budget blockbuster leading lady. ABODE sat down with the A-list actress to find out what it takes to earn her stripes as a female action-hero.

THE SUPERHEROINE 32

ABODE May-PS.indd 32

S

carlett Johannson has always resisted the impulse to conform to expectations. A tough-minded, independent young woman born and raised in New York City, the buxom beauty has tried to forge a film career while cloaking her private life under several veils of secrecy. That's why it shouldn't surprise anyone that her marriage to French journalist/PR executive Romain Dauriac only became known several months after the blessed event in October, one month following the birth of her first child, Rose. She and Dauriac are amongst the most discrete celebrity couples on earth, even though Johansson is firmly back on the Hollywood A-ist following the staggering $460 million that her sci-fi film, Lucy, took in at the global box-office last year. Preferring to divide her time between homes in Paris and New York, the 30-year-old actress is determined to lead a life at once interesting and ambitious. Her new film, Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which she returns to the role of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, is likely to add to her new-found bankability. Hollywood insiders expect that this highly anticipated to 2012's The Avengers will have no trouble exceeding the $1.5. billion in earnings that the original earned, which currently ranks as the third highest grossing film of all time.

Directed by Joss Whedon, Ultron sees Johansson rejoin Marvel's familiar legion of superheroes - Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as The Incredible Hulk, and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye - as they once attempt to save planet earth from destruction. This time the threat to civilization comes after Tony Stark/aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program only to see things go seriously awry. As a result, Black Widow and her fellow Avengers gang join Iron Man in trying to stop the destructive forces unleashed by the mysterious Ultron (James Spader). The film promises to be the kind of epic superhero outing that will see us once again delight in watching Johansson do battle in her sexy, body-hugging latex suit. Scarlett Johansson first drew attention as a 14-year-old ingenue in The Horse Whisperer before soaring to stardom as Bill Murray’s object of beauty in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation (2004). This marked the beginning of her reign as Hollywood's latest "It Girl" whereupon she quickly established herself as Woody Allen's muse in films ranging from the comedy Scoop to her turn as a sultry temptress in the critically acclaimed Match Point and later as an American tourist having a hot affair with Javier Bardem in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. After her career took a nosedive that coincided with the emotional fallout from her short-lived marriage to Ryan Reynolds that ended in 2010, she decided to rebrand herself in a series of daring independent films that included her playing an alien (Under the Skin), a disembodied operating system (Her), and a porn addict's girlfriend (Don Jon). But it was her stunning performance as the turbocharged amazon in Lucy, last year's action thriller directed by Luc Besson, that has shown that she can pull in massive international audiences even without her Avengers' superstar cast mates. With regard to her surprise transformation as an action superhero figure, Johansson is wholly upbeat: "People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine. But I loved Iron Man, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible. I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past...Black Widow is a superhero, but she’s also human. She’s small, but she’s strong. It’s hard not to admire her. She packs a big punch."

33

ABODE May-PS.indd 33

4/26/15 12:25 PM

ABODE feature Life as a new mother is also part of an even deeper personal transformation. Explained Johansson:"I had a very strong picture in my mind of what my baby would look like. And, of course, she is completely different. Perfect, but not what I’d imagined. Now, of course, I can’t picture her any other way.”

film was very daring...I've admired Luc Besson's work for many years and so this was a great chance for me to work with him and also be part of what I thought was a very interesting story. When Lucy ingests the drugs it has the consequence of transforming her brain where one normally uses only 10 percent of its capacity to fully 100 percent and how that alters her personality.

I love the JOHANSSON: I’ve been a victim of equally surprising to you? fact that The Avengers went against the objectification, but no more than anybody JOHANSSON: Not at all. I thought the else. I don’t feel I’ve been particularly affected by that any more than others who are in the spotlight. Or anyone, really. All you have to do is go out to a nightclub and you see it happening right away. It’s not always the case that a man is trying to get to a woman’s brain first! But I think it’s something that I’ve been able to use to my advantage, while trying to avoid getting pigeonholed.

"There must exist a world in which I can balance other things, be able to raise a family and still make a film a year, or work on my own, develop things, do theatre. I want to be able to have it all," - Scarlett Johannson

I’ve been very fortunate to collaborate with cosmetics campaigns and clothing campaigns, to be photographed by the best photographers and make beautiful pictures and all of that stuff. In other ways, it can be very frustrating at times because I’ve always thought of myself as being a character actor and . . . you can be placed in this specific stereotype that the media puts you in, but the fact is that a lot of the work that I’ve done isn’t necessarily overtly sexual. Q: You've worked a lot the past few years and done a number of provocative films including Under the Skin with Jonathan Glazer which had you playing an alien? JOHANSSON: I also just had an interesting experience working with Jonathan. He hasn’t made a ton of movies, but he spent

ten years working on (Under the Skin). But it's hard to compare your experience working with different directors. I could never compare working with someone like Terence Malick to someone like Scorsese. I think while the work and quantity are different, it’s impossible to compare the quality. It’s always interesting to kind of jump off of a cliff with new directors and you never know what you are going to get, but that’s not just a first time thing. It’s like that with any collaboration.

Q: Do you have better intuition now when it comes to choosing projects? JOHANSSON: Intuition comes into picking a project quite often, knowing if it makes sense to do something commercially or artistically, and no one really knows the proper formula for either one of those. You have to feel it, you know? Otherwise, forget it. If you don’t know why you are there or what you are doing, then why be there? You have to take risks and trust your instincts, initially. That’s vital, I think.

Q: You've become quite a fashion icon of late. Are you getting more comfortable walking the red carpet and wearing from different designer outfits? JOHANSSON: I'm not really someone who follows the latest trends and I don't pay that much attention to choosing outfits other than finding something that I like and I feel comfortable wearing. When I go to film premieres I like to be able to choose something that refers back to classic dresses of past eras.

Q: Will you ever do another romantic comedy? JOHANSSON: I haven’t really read any romantic comedies lately that I’ve really liked. Don’t get me wrong, I like the genre, but they’re difficult. There are so many clichés and I think it’s hard to find one that hasn’t been done before. I think that’s why I tend to avoid that genre, because I never want to make something that I’ve seen before.

Q: When you assess how things are going at this point in your life, what would your immediate impressions be? JOHANSSON: I’ve just been really fortunate to have quite a productive and diverse past couple of years...I also feel that I've dealt with a lot of things during my twenties and that now I feel very happy.

Get The Perfect Holiday Hair! Styling tips from the Creative Team of Glow American Salon; Michelle Thomas, Hayley HUGGINS, LOUISE DEWIS and Ji Hee Kim CREATIVE LEADER: AMBER MCALEAVY Compiled By Chet Tibayan

Just like with our clothing and makeup, our hair-style should also be planned while travelling. Learn from the experts on how not to get stuck with just a ponytail!

beach wave When I go on a fabulous sunny holiday I always try to keep my hair as fuss free as possible. I love the beach wave look and being able to create so many different styles with the same technique. This style lasts me for 3-4 days so cuts out all the high maintenance fussing of my normal routine. Before I go to bed I will braid my hair in sections, some times bigger braids some times smaller depending on how wavy I want the result and how tired I am from sunbathing and wake boarding! A must-have for bleached hair, I add in the Curls Full Circle leave on treatment to give that extra bit of TLC for my sun and sea battered hair. This also helps form and holds in the beach wave and stops it from becoming frizzy over the next few days. The smaller the braid the tighter the wave will be and always remember where you part your hair as you will need to put this in the right place before you braid as this will effect it afterwards. Once it is all dry and you have shook it out DO NOT BRUSH you are left with a beautiful beach wave. And this can also be dressed up by clipping a few pieces back or adding a few sparkly accessories for and be ready for your new holiday romance

braid style My recommended hair style for travelling is most definitely a hair braid. This style is so versatile and can be adapted for any length, hair type or personal style. This is perfect as it ensures your mane is kept practically out of your way whilst you are modeling the latest hair trend! For a chic, messy braid sprinkle some L’oreal magic dust through the hair before you start. This will add volume and texture. Braid the hair as normal but leave any natural imperfections. Once style is completed, rough it up with magic dust pulling it out and rubbing gently. To achieve a more classic structured style, I would recommend prepping your hair with the Macadamia Oil. This will smooth and de-frizz your hair whilst adding tones of shine! Braid the hair ensuring all sections are smooth and balanced. Finish with a strong hold hair spray like Paul Mitchell Extra Clean! This style can also be used as a setting technique so once you arrive and your destination, just unravel the braid and gently run your fingers through the mid-length to ends and wallah‌ perfect beach waves to start your vacation!

scarf style How to protect blonde hair whilst travelling! While on the beach, roaming around exploring new locations we often forget that while we are enjoying every moment, our hair, in particular the bleached or highlighted hair isn't! Why? When we bleach or highlight hair it becomes porous, rather like a sponge literally absorbs anything and everything. That is why it is best to style our hair with scarf that is particularly placed at the front of the hair, as this is the part we tend to play around with more and the most exposed (Now you know why that part tends to turn brassy first) Use scarf to protect and preserve our beautiful blondes from the effects of the often dusty, polluted atmosphere.

Q.What's the most

important beauty product that we shouldn't forget?

A.

Definitely Mascara. The one I love most is Phenomen' Eyes from Givenchy.

I really have Q.Do to bring my entire beauty kit when I travel?

A.

No you don’t, many brands have created great makeup travel kits that hold eyeshadows, powder, mascara, lipstick, brow pencil and blush in small presentations, I would suggest to add your favorite foundation to this kit. I highly recommend the Lancôme Palette Absolu au Naturel all-in-one makeup kit.

You can use any BB cream, but always set it up with loose powder, otherwise you will have to reapply during the day. But if you want to skip using BB cream, just apply your regular moisturizer and do the same- spread loose powder all over your face, and add a soft peach blush to complete the look!

A.

You never will go wrong wearing a fancy and clean pony tail. Cover the hair band with part of your hair to make it more elegant. Traveling is not an excuse to not style your hair and put on makeup, but take the opportunity to rest of some beauty products.

beautyfeature La Nuit Trésor

THE FUSION OF TWO STARS by CHET TIBAYAN

ABODE brings you the real story behind Lancome’s latest fragrance, La Nuit Trésor!

W

hat happens when two stars collide? We found out during the launch of Lancome’s latest creation through its master perfumers Amandine Marie and Christophe Raynaud. Can you tell us the story behind La Nuit Trésor? Amandine Marie: La Nuit Trésor came into being through the association of two sublime flowers: The rose, undeniable queen of flowers and symbol of absolute

love, and the vanilla Tahitensis orchid, perfumery’s very own black gold: a bewitching, noble ingredient that carries us into the mysterious, heady realm of the night. Christophe Raynaud: What we have with La Nuit Trésor is a black crystal rose swathed in black vanilla. A mysterious adornment whose power grows petal by petal.

How do each of the ingredients shine? CR: In this composition, we treated the rose like a diamond set in a case of wild vanilla leather: by finely cutting each of its facets, creating contrasts, enhancing its effusive edges and lifting its smoothly sent sensual notes. AM: But also by using the sharpest and greenest notes to create more vertical dimension and vibrancy from the top notes, through the middle notes, and down to the base. Its edgy character is a little reminiscent of the rose’s thorns.

48

ABODE May-PS.indd 48

4/26/15 12:27 PM

CR: Using this technique, vanilla Tahitensis, considered the most luxurious of all vanillas, maintains all of its sensual, balmy purity. We combined it with perfumery’s highest dose of praline, for unprecedented scent addictiveness. AM: We also wove in a halo of mystery with natural incense, often used in the most luxurious of niche perfumery to add in that enigmatically intoxicating nighttime feel. This allowed us to create a sense of refinement and tension within this new, ultra-feminine composition. CR:To create the signature of this new 21st century Trésor, 25 years after the original, we reinvented the legendary leather and sandalwood notes of the original Trésor. At a technical level, we found just the right balance to offset this new elixir’s gourmand overdose and accentuate its ultra-chic signature. It thus represents a whole new level of addiction in the world of perfumery, which women are hopefully bound to adore. AM: You might call La Nuit Trésor an eroticised rose on a bed of vanilla leather; which makes it incredibly sexy and aphrodisiac. No one can resist it. No one can restrain from it. Its precious composition reveals a delicious yet refined breed of mouthwatering desire. What other luxurious ingredients are paried with the rose, queen of flowers, to perfect its signature scent?

AM: We combined it with a lychee accord, bringing in an effusively luminous and zesty facet. CR: Amandine had the brilliant idea of using papyrus, a little-known ingredient made unique by its leather facet, which blends alongside patchouli in this new chypre creation to offer a more refined and modern signature – a contemporary and mouth-watering new chypre.

to wear both day and night, with more than 24-hour hold for the most sublime diffusion imaginable.

AM: We were determined to use rose oxide as the composition’s beating heart, to create vibrancy and vertical diffusion. Reminiscent of the almost blinding splendour of a starry night sky.

CR: It marks the spectacular return of vanilla to French perfumery, in a bewitchingly mysterious creation.

Who will wear your latest Lancôme elixir? What does it promise? CR: La Nuit Trésor represents the 1st gourmand aphrodisiac. A universal, transversal creation to be worn from 20 to 70, because love knows no age! It is the brand new 21st century love potion,

What makes La Nuit Trésor unique? AM: La Nuit Trésor is a recognisable composition with a unique signature. A powerful crystalline rose on an overdose of vanilla leather. An aphrodisiac scent as eternal as absolute love.

La Nuit Trésor, a future Lancôme pillar? AM: After the addictive facet and pure joie de vivre of La vie est belle, we created La Nuit Trésor as a logical follow-up to this state of mind. We started with the rose, the quintessence of every Trésor for 25 years, and imagined it in new-found aphrodisiac, sensual and addictive form. CR: Lancôme reinvents the territory of gourmand fragrance with La vie est belle and La Nuit Trésor. I would go so far as to say that Lancôme creates the market’s chicest gourmand perfumes. This pure aphrodisiac signature will form a majestic new addition to the Trésor collection.

s you enter The Ritz-Carlton Spa, you immerse yourself in a sanctuary of peace and tranquility, where the elements of the sea and desert create the perfect environment for a truly unique spa experience. The SPA offers a collection of body and skin care treatments to treat your skin to a smoother, youthful appearance with relaxing experiences customized to exfoliate, detoxify and moisturize skin for a healthy glow. Using a fusion of traditional Arabic principles, Asian traditions and progressive European concepts, the Spa provides a natural respite from the day's cares. Step into a haven for the inner and outer self; an unparalleled retreat that promises relaxation and restoration of the body, mind and spirit. I decided to try “The Afsana Mystery”, which is an intensely hydrating and nourishing body treatment that offers exfoliation, hydration, and massage, so it not only provides relaxation, but noticeably softer skin and detoxification. The best part is that it’s suitable for sensitive skin too! My experience began with a vitalizing scrub to exfoliate the skin, using organic and natural ingredients- a mix of organic sea salt, white oats and moon beans- applied from the neck down to gently buff and smooth my skin. I was then, cocooned in a delicious, warm and deeply hydrating masque of honey, milk and dates, which was allowed to soak into my skin as I relaxed.

Why honey and Dates? Honey is considered a natural humectant, which means it has the ability to attract and retain moisture. The skin’s ability to stay moist is an important factor to maintain softness, suppleness and elasticity. As skin ages, or as it is exposed to environmental stresses

and chemical agents, it loses its ability to retain water; it becomes dry and appears wrinkled. Dates are excellent anti- oxidants, as well full of essential amino acids rich of Vit. B5, using dates as a natural skin care treatment are highly beneficial for the skin cells as it can repair damage caused by free radicals as well as using dates is helpful to maintain the health of our skin. It can eliminate dry and dead skin cells, and regenerate fresh and new ones. Consequently, we get healthy, bright and glowing skin. I was then treated to a deep, relaxing body massage with essential oils to conclude the treatment. At the end of it all, I felt like I was waking up from a beautiful dream, and my skin looked and felt smoother than ever before. Healing benefits of massage Massages may be viewed as a treat, but they also have a variety of health benefits which go beyond the feelings of relaxation and wellness. They help you sleep better, reduce stress and put you in a better mood, but a regular massage may well result in an increased radiance in your skin. I definitely recommend “The Afsana Mystery” body treatment; it’s perfect must-have before any special occasion. Q.

My family and friends always compare me to my older sister. She is beautiful, intelligent and successful. They say, 'Why can't you be like her?' They want me to be a copy. I hate it. Even teachers at school used to say it. We have a few similarities, but we look completely different. I’m not as academic as her and our interests are polar opposites.

A.

When we’re compared to loved ones it’s difficult to gain a true sense of our own identity; especially when it seems others just want a replica. We all crave acceptance. However, we don't want to lie to ourselves, or to others, to get it. Sometimes, you may feel you are rebelling or doing things out of character just to get noticed. For some people, embracing difference is extremely difficult. This usually occurs with those who possess rigid attitudes and expectations. However, that is their personal issue and insecurity. You must not carry their emotional bricks on your shoulders. You have your own and they are heavy enough. The strongest relationships are based on true self-disclosure without judgement or ridicule and most importantly, they are reciprocal. You must not lose sight of your identity and what’s important to you. This will be a challenge. However, if you only highlight your differences, a conflict situation is likely to arise. The response of your family and friends is likely to be closed and defensive. However, if you remain consistent, (by maintaining your sense of self), while still being flexible, (by equally embracing the similarities that you share with your sister), you take control of the situation and your loved ones are more likely to truly see you.

I am really demotivated. My friends go on holidays and live life to the full. I don't see this side at all. I work long hours for small pay; most is sent home to relatives. My friends try to involve me, but I can’t. I feel like forgetting my responsibilities and just doing what they do.

A.

I understand your frustrations. We are supposed to work to live; not live to work. Your commitment to your family is admirable. However, we have to be realistic with our personal circumstances. 'To live' currently means different things to you and your friends. In your case, it centres on your basic needs of providing for your family. Your friends are in a different position. ‘To live’ means being able to spend more lavishly on regular holidays and socialising. This compensates for their hours of working. We all strive for well-paid, fulfilling, occupations that we are passionate about. However, this is not the situation for us all. Nevertheless, you need to ensure your essential needs are met, first and foremost. Then you can look to progress. Yes, you could neglect your responsibilities and be involved with your friends’ lifestyle, but do you really want to do that? Avoiding temptation requires focus and patience, especially if your friends do not truly understand your priorities. Concentrate on the ‘here and now’ before looking forward. No plan for the future is complete without consideration of the present. Calculated risk-taking in your development is fine, being reckless is not

Q.

We have lived in Doha for seven years. Our two daughters will both start university within the next 12 months. They want us to move back to the UK with them, but we have a brilliant life here and are not ready to return. Are we being selfish?

A.

I don’t think you are being selfish. I think you are being honest and realistic. When is the right time for our children to stand on their own two feet? As parents, when do we begin to re-consider our own needs in terms of our daily priorities? Only you know that answer. You're aware of how independent your children are; their qualities and personality. Are they immature? Do they lack skills and require your constant presence? Perhaps they just want the easy life they are used to and comfortable with. There comes a time when your children have to fly the nest; a time when you adapt your parenting style from authority and daily protection to supportive guidance and interdependence. It requires everybody to change habits of a lifetime, stepping outside of your comfort zones. It’s going to happen at some point. Whether it is now or sometime in the near future, at least you can prepare. It is already clear where your heart lies for your own future. It just remains to be seen whether your parenting mode is still tuned to daily protection or adapted to support and guidance. I’m sure you’ll make the right decision for everybody.

Homemade Beauty Recipes for Spring Fresh Ideas for Healthier Skin and Hair! By SparkPeople.com

vocados are an excellent source of skin-nourishing vitamins that can help rejuvenate skin just in time for this season of rebirth and renewal. Combine it with a few other spring foods, and you’ve got a homemade skincare ritual that would make Mother Nature proud.

Guacamole for Your Face

Avocado is one of nature’s greatest moisturizers, especially helpful for skin that has been ravaged by winter winds. • 1 avocado, mashed • 1/2 tsp sea salt • 2 Tbsp plain, unsweetened yogurt Mix ingredients until smooth. Smooth masque over clean skin, and leave on for 25 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Avocado & Cream Hair Conditioner

Because avocados contain a range of nutrients, including vitamins K and C, and moisturizing oils, they can be beneficial to dry hair too. • 1 avocado, mashed • 1/2 cup whole milk Blend ingredients in a blender until smooth. After shampooing hair, apply mixture, working down to the ends. Allow to remain on hair for up to 15 minutes, then rinse well. Refrigerate remaining masque in a tightly-sealed container for up to one week.

Avocado Cleanser for Dry Skin

Much like olive oil is pressed from olives, avocado oil is pressed from the fruit of the avocado. Because it is regenerative and moisturizing—due to its high levels of vitamin E and monounsaturated fats—it is frequently used in beauty products. You can buy avocado oil in most natural grocery stores and specialty food stores. • 1 Tbsp avocado oil • 1 Tbsp honey • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar Whip ingredients together with a fork until smooth. Apply to skin using gentle circular movements, and allow it to remain on skin for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. The vinegar smell will disappear momentarily. Use this cleanser immediately.

Avocado is not only good for your insides. It does wonders on your face as a mask - Go on! Play with your food! 52

wellness Cold-press juicing is a trend that's caught on this last decade. ABODE has all the healthy facts.

juicing Vs.. smoothies By ADAM KHALID lifestyle coach, team evolve for more information www.evolvemindbodysoul.com

Cold-press juicing is where fruits and vegetables are pounded or crushed in order to separate the fibre from the juice. The liquid that's extracted contains all the beneficial minerals, vitamins and fibre.

Why juicing is good for us I particularly love juicing green vegetables, sometimes I put an apple or pear in to sweeten things up. However, I have grown to enjoy the potent taste of chlorophyll, which is basically liquefied sunshine contained in most green vegetables. Now, who doesn't like the sun.

green vegetables are packed with this essential, yet massively overlooked vitamin.

Green vegetables are rich in Vitamin K, in fact you can only really find Vitamin K in vegetables, mainly leafy greens. Right, so now you want to know why we need Vitamin K. Vitamin K is crucial for cartilage in the human body. Many organs contain cartilage; people suffering from back problems, knee replacements, and other conditions are most likely lacking Vitamin K, which may be due to a shortage of greens in their diet. Vibrant health is not possible without the regular consumption of Vitamin K.

So now that we understand a lot better why vegetables, especially greens are so vital in human diet, why juice you may be thinking. Well let’s see if I gave you a bunch of kale, 4 sticks of celery, half a cucumber, a handful of hemp seeds a bunch of chard and a pear, let’s be honest you may not enjoy eating it all raw and you’d probably be chomping for hours to get through that lot and stand a chance breaking it down well enough for your body to sufficiently absorb all the goodness. Whereas you can press all those goodies in a juicer and have all the vitamins and minerals reduced into a glass and ready to whack back in under 5 minutes and guess what, as you’ve now extracted the fibre from the fruit and vegetables your body has the pleasure of all that goodness going straight into your bloodstream, an instant nutrient hit!

Vitamin K deficiencies have been linked to disorders such as, osteoporosis, hematomas, skin and liver cancer, nose bleeds and various birth defects. Vitamin K is the least studied; all

By removing the fiber we are concentrating all of the vitamins, and that also applies for the fructose and sugars, so be careful when juicing fruits as it easy to create a natural sugar bomb.

About Smoothies

Smoothies! Such a delicious and nutritious way to consume fruit and vegetables. Fruit smoothies happen to be the most popular ones. However, a green smoothie makes for just as much of a treat; why stop there, you can add nuts, seeds, butters and biscuits into the mix-whatever tickles your fancy, really. I like to use cashewnuts (pre-soaked 3 to 4 hours) as it they give a delicious creamy taste and an amazing silky texture.

I’ve heard about a company which specializes in muffins back in the U.K. Apparently, they make milkshakes with their muffins! Now, although that's not really one for me, I must say, what an innovative idea! I am sure they're doing good business Yes there’s so much more to smoothies than you initially thought, I can’t think of a quicker more efficient way to prepare a tasty treat. With such minimal time and effort you really can whip up a powerful potion to keep you fueled up for the day in minutes, seconds even. Smoothies can be enjoyed at any time of the day, they make for a great breakfast, a quick lunch a tasty snack or light dinner. Just tailor the type and volume of ingredients to your preferred occasion or mood.

With so many people juicing for weight-loss, it's easy to get confused or mis-informed, especially if you're new to juicing.

Mix it up

Now you're equipped with enough knowledge and Vitamix Professional reasoning to Series 500 get juicing and blending, all you need now is the right equipment. As for blenders there’s so many on the market. I recommed a Vitamix- it's a top of the range product, which costs around QR 2,500- a good investment for your kitchen. Sure, there's plenty of cheaper ones. However, in the long run, you will probably spend more by replacing cheaper blenders as there break from vigorous use or because they just aren’t cutting it. Cold press juicers are not so confusing as there’s only a few on the market, again you’ll need to open your wallet. Quality cold press juices start from....QR 2,500. There's some on the market two or three times the price, so do your research and find what works best for you. I started juicing and blending around 3 years ago, I’ve now really started feeling the benefits from it. For those who have the time, discipline and commitment to completely incorporate juicing and blending into your everyday diet will feel immense changes, Which what I myself am striving for. Taken seriously with the right approach and ingredients juices and smoothies can reverse serious health conditions and relive pains and problems, so what are you waiting for get started and don’t stop !

1

Shop Smart for Furniture Dining alfresco is all about outdoor entertaining, gathering with family or friends, and escaping your typical daily routine at the office. Any rules you should follow? Be smart while shopping for your outdoor furniture by choosing weather resistance pieces and making sure to have ample coverage from the sweltering sun.

3

Choose Gold Charger Plates

Consider a Fun-tastic Fire Pit Table Perfect for those chilly nights, a fire-pit in the middle of your table will keep you warm and turn up the fun! Everyone loves to gather around a fire, which makes the perfect focal point and creates a wonderful ambience. Enjoy your dinner under the stars alongside the warm fire that also fends off pesky flying bugs!

4

Arrange Seating on the Floor

6

Instead of opting for a full patio set – purchase a low table, exotic rug, and lots of seat cushions. Sitting and dining on the floor is a magical way to enjoy a nice meal with family and friends. Have fun with your décor and mix and match as many bright colors and patterns as you like!

Go Monochromatic

7

Decorate your patio sticking to two main colors – black and white! These sharp hues never go out of fashion and are the hallmarks of classic chic. Choose sophisticated striped materials for cushions, a tablecloth or table runner and then add just a hint of color with napkins and colorful plates.

Use Romantic Lighting

There is nothing more beautiful than a late-night meal with subtle, twinkling lighting. Place a few candles as a centerpiece on your table for just a hint of flickering light. You can also hang a chandelier outdoors, solar powered lanterns, or string lighting for a party vibe!

BUON APPETITO at RIVA By chet tibayan

Chopsticks Restaurant

The two fundamental roots of Italian cooking lie in fresh ingredients and a healthy respect for them. RIVA, one of the eight restaurants at the Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, offers the best in Italian cuisine like no other in the city. The ferry ride to the Island is worth your time and money, and RIVA is the icing on the cake.

RIVA is one of the many reasons why you need pay visit at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara.

ABODE was invited to try their classic signature dishes at RIVA, the resort's contemporary trattoria-style restaurant that specializes in handmade pasta and pizza straight from a wood-fired oven! We chose to sit outside and enjoyed the nice breeze and view of the restaurant. We ordered our choices of juices, antipasti, insalate, main course and dessert, and the presentation of food was impeccable and impressive. But the dishes that left us craving for more with their 'wow' factor were the mocktails, Carpaccio, Insalata di Mare, Salmone al Forno Laccato al Balsamico, Risotto al Porcini and the Deconstructed Lemon Tart. Their flawless taste and presentation took us straight back to Italy! As any true Italian meal would end, we were served RIVA's signature espresso. A perfect way to end a scrumptious meal which is a treat for the senses. The Island's location and breathtaking view of the coast makes it a great getaway destination from the hustle-bustle of the City. We couldn't think of a better way to savour the passion of Italy! photography baiba jakubaite

Discovering the Frills of Luxury at

Marsa Malaz Kempinski By Chet Tibayan

Doha's newest five-star resort knows just how to make you feel like royalty!

E

ach of the 77 worldwide properties of Kempinski has its own specific personality; and linking them all is the Lady in Red -- their global brand ambassdor. Upon entering the lavish lobby of Marsa Malaz, you'll see her there, as she greets you with a smile. Knowing everything about the hotel, she's the one who will ensure that your stay is extraordinary.

If Dubai has the Burj Al Arab and Singapore has the Marina Bay Sands, Doha has Marsa Malaz Kempinski, the most luxurious hotel in the City that has state-of-the-art landscape set in its own island. Arriving at Marsa Malaz is like going to Cinderella’s ball- the royal entrance, the valet service and the crew in their impeccable uniforms is bound to leave you fascinated. It is the perfect blend of English royalty and Arabian hospitality.

THE CHECK- IN EXPERIENCE Inside its lavish lobby we’ve met the Lady in Red, she immediately welcomes us then gets our ID and head us to our brunch at Sawa. After our brunch, we have a mini tour of the hotel and then finally she escorted us to our rooms. Yes, we didn’t have to sit at the reception to check in and go through the awkward process of being asked several questions. Annie, the Lady in Red, took care of everything for us.

They say food defines a large factor of the place. As for Marsa Malaz, having Cafe Murano a family brunch at Sawa is truly a great experience. The selection of the food varies from Mediterranean to Arabic, appetizing and surely delectable for everyone! We were seated beside the famous horse statue. It is definitely family friendly, with their kids buffet adorned with sweets and colourful candies. The adults will enjoy themselves with an afternoon of live Jazz music while the kids are busy in the children’s corner at the lawn. We also spent our breakfast at Sawa and enjoyed the food, and met the famous Executive Chef Mattias Roock.

Sanctuary In Salalah By Lynsey Riach Images courtesy of the Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah and Qatar Airways

A tropical getaway lies only a short hop, skip and a jump from our shores that will leave you believing you’ve travelled half-way across the globe to witness the natural beauty that is...Salalah, Oman.

S

alalah is a bit of a tongue-twister to pronounce, but it sure does sound pretty. Located at the southern tip of Oman, in the Dhofar region, it’s about an eight-hour drive from the capital of Muscat. This region is famous for its seasonal weather, locally known as ‘khareef’ when it witnesses its best period, taking on a completely different geographical persona than that of the familiar and well-known Muscat – or even other countries of neighbouring regions in the Middle East. Upon my arrival at the tiny airport of Salalah I immediately felt transported in time, circa 1978. Visas are granted upon arrival for citizens of more than 60 countries. GCC nationals however do not require one. The airport reminded me of one on an isolated island I had once

visited due to its basic but character-filled char. Even in the dark at 6:00 a.m., I was fixated at the greenery that welcomed me outside the airport. It was awe-inspiring as I gawped at tall, skinny coconut palm trees. Was this Sri Lanka? Because it sure looked like it.

September, people travel from all over to experience and enjoy the unique wonders of nature, rain, mist-soaked mountains, green-cloaked valleys, springs and waterfalls. There’s an authentic, rugged beauty to this area that transports you to the exotic.

For those in the know, the peak and best time to travel to Salalah is during khareef, which is their monsoon period and is an attraction in itself. Running between July-

As I headed to the hotel on the courtesy Crowne Plaza shuttle-bus, I watched a man on an old bicycle slowly graze past my window with the lanky palms

as his backdrop. This was definitely not the Middle East…it couldn’t be? I face-planted into my bed around 6:30 a.m. with my alarm set for six hours later. I lasted three hours as I itched to explore…and to be sure those coconut palms weren’t just a figment of my bleary-eyed travelers’ imagination. I was feeling lucky. Qatar was, on that same day, experiencing the worst sandstorm it had seen in recent years and here was I beneath the sun beating down as I snaked my way through the Crowne Plaza’s pool and beachfront area. I ran onto the sand and was delighted – it was real, real sand not man-made. Waves crashed thunderously beside me. ‘This is the Indian Ocean’, I thought and it was powerfully beautiful. There was a red flag at the lifeguard’s tower so I only dipped my toes into the refreshing froth to cool me down and let me just be in the moment of now. I walked for around thirty minutes – in fact I did this each day of my stay as I was quite simply fascinated that this could be the Middle East. A short flight from the arid desert and Salalah was offering me nature, greenery, fresh air. Believe it or not, while the rest of the Arabian Peninsula hits 50+ degrees Celsius in the summer, Salalah never sees the mercury rise above 27 degrees. It’s the perfect getaway. Take In The Sights A local guy working for the Crowne Plaza by the name of Abdullah took us for a short tour of the area – it was only a half-day with plenty more to see if you had longer. We really wanted to grab the feel of Salalah and

for me that was all about the jungle, the oxygen released from those plants giving such beauty and life…I just had to see and feel more of it. We headed to the centre of town which is old and dilapidated but life exists, with frequent bicyclists and people walking by past rundown restaurants and old-fashioned mosques. Huge plantations dwarf the souq area where frankincense is sold by the camelload. Expect a language barrier while haggling. These plantations loom over stalls of fruit-sellers offering a range of exotic, yet all local fruits. I gulped down the freshest and most delicious coconut I’ve ever consumed – packed full of electrolytes. I always enjoy coconut water but on this occasion, I quaffed three in quick succession and pondered why on earth these aren’t imported to Qatar? The market trader sold us bananas, papayas and pomegranates. These stalls stretched around the block and the entire perimeter of the plantation. It felt more East Africa than Middle East. Abdullah moved us on to see the summer residence of His Highness Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the ruler of the Sultanate of Oman’s palace. Grand but welcoming, it seemed modern and clean amidst such an historic town as Salalah. We continued down the road in search of more of what Salalah had to offer. Camels were to be seen on every corner, wandering onto the beach and across the road. We stopped frequently to take selfies and admire these ships of the desert surrounded by tropical jungle.

The lush 'khareef' season

birds from Africa, Europe and India all due to the abundance of food throughout the year. Mugsayl Beach has winding caves and a craggy rock-face to offer dramatic photographic souvenirs. The beach is also home to some blowholes where a high tide offers a ‘dragons breath’ sound from below and then a sudden gush of ocean sprays upward. It’s exhilarating, especially when watching a family waiting for their Kodak moment get soaked! The region is also a favourite for those looking to dive and experience what lies beneath. But perhaps one of the most well known products from this region is that of frankincense. From its namesake tree, frankincense is mentioned in many ancient history books and it’s trail through Yemen, Saudi Arabia and beyond all began in Salalah. In addition to its aromatic fragrance and use as incense to aromatize houses, frankincense is also used as a therapeutic ingredient. Frankincense is a symbol of life, or rather it is life itself for the Dhofari people and you will see it used and sold widely across the region. Abdullah actually stopped at some local trees and showed us how the sap of the tree is what frankincense actually is. He also stopped off at the local souq to buy us some as a parting gift.

But if you do long to see the vastness of the desert in true Lawrence of Arabia style then a tour worth taking would be to the foreboding sounding Empty Quarter. The biggest desert in the Arabian Peninsula, If wildlife is your thing then you’ll be able to spot plenty in the Dhofar region. and void of any oasis, there are still large Camels aside, there are flamingos on most expanses of unexplored and uninhabited terrain that can be witnessed on an beaches and birdwatchers will delight in year-round sighting of many migratory organized tour.

Disney On Ice Lands in Doha Disney on Ice is returning to Doha with another magical show. We interview Director Patty Vincent to find out more about Princesses & Heroes.

Patty Vincent

What has been the best part of staging Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes? The best part about staging Disney On Ice presents Princess & Heroes was the diversity between all the different properties. And the hardest part? I think the most difficult part was to be sure that we created enough variety within all the different Princess solo’s, pair skates and production numbers. After the great success of Frozen, how did you feel directing this show? It was a huge honour to have the opportunity to direct this show. The movie Frozen was so successful, that it inspired me to really develop the characters, the movement, the atmosphere and the heart of the film and bring these beloved characters to life. Why do you think Frozen became so iconic? The music was so powerful. Every lyric had meaning and really moved the story along with such emotion. The relationship between the two sisters was so beautifully told. There’s a lot of heart and humour in this story that everyone can relate to. What are the most popular acts in the show? We have an acrobat act during The Little Mermaid segment that’s spectacular and highly unusual to see something like this performed on ice. Aladdin and Prince

Eric are incredible physically jumping from our set holding a single rope from about 25 feet above the ice. We have amazing skating throughout the show. What was your favourite scene to direct? The Blizzard in Frozen was one of my favourite scenes to direct. It was probably the most challenging because of the characters location and conflict with one another. Any memorable moment from the Princesses & Heroes tour? I don’t tour with the show, however I do visit the show every now and again and I really enjoy seeing the growth in the characters, skating, performances and technical elements. It’s wonderful to return and see how beautiful the show

looks and hear the audience reaction throughout. What challenges do you face bringing the show to the Middle East? I suppose preparing the performers for the different language as well as the crew to manage their cues in a different language. What is the best part of directing a show seen by millions of people from different cultures? It’s an incredible feeling to know that our shows touch so many people around the world. I love hearing how different cultures receive and react to different parts of the show.

e caught up with Angel Aquino and his band Farenhayt who have been entertaining audiences and keeping the nights alive for almost a decade now. We're delighted to hear about their journey so far.

When and how did the band form? Farenhayt Band was established in Doha mid 2007 with collaboration between professional vocalist/performers of then Ramada Hotel namely Johanne McLeod and Karen Siemers and Angel Aquino’s previous group named Quantum Band which started performing in Doha late 2006. To have a new band identity, Quantum has been replaced with Farenhayt Band with original members such as Angel Aquino, Omar Mamoko, Genes, Roger Calzado, Erwin Mamotos, Ariel, Sherwin Valencia/Johanne Mc Leod/

Karen Siemers. As time passed by and some original members have left, different vocalists have been part of the band. Today, the band comprises Angel Aquino (Drummer/Band Leader), Erwin Mamotos (Keyboard), Rey Robles (Bass), Mon Calantuan (Lead Guitar), and Shane Torres/ Maht Castillejo/Morgan Cadorna (Vocals). With our passion in music, the present rhythm section has been solid for the last 6 years which makes Farenhayt Band continuously active in the music industry. And with the newly joined vocalists, Farenhayt continues to perform quality music around Qatar. What is the story behind the name “Farenhayt”? “Farenhayt” is taken from the word Fahrenheit (symbol °F), a temperature scale. Since Qatar, where the group is residing

What's your take on nightlife in Qatar? The music scene in Doha is becoming popular and in demand especially in the hotels catering to companies and individual/private parties in addition to the bars at hotels where live music is one of the main attractions. Bands also perform at community events. There are also community events wherein bands are performing. However, as we are aware that there are different nationalities living in Qatar, different types of music, culture and languages are being practiced. Farenhayt Band, which is a Filipino band targets mainly the English speaking audience. What does your band contribute to Doha’s music scene? For almost 8 years, Farenhayt Band has contributed a lot and still very active. The band has been entertaining thousands of music lovers all across Qatar. We do performances in different bars around Doha and private parties elsewhere. We share our music within the Filipino community’s yearly events and even in the celebration of Qatar National Day. Lastly, we entertained sports crowd being one of the front acts before the main games. What is next for Farenhayt? To continue on what we are contributing as mentioned above, keep up the high level of quality in playing and performing music, to have more gigs, entertain more people and meet more friends through music.

The long, low body of the F12 is beautifully packaged in its dramatic design, with swooping lines. At the front end, an aggressive face presents the F12’s intent, blending both aesthetics and aerodynamics. With an assertive demeanour with precise cornering; richly trimmed cabin; with comfortable daily-driver comfort. It was really not a surprise why I got heads turning at each corner. Its robust build is

signature to its stance and enjoyed every minute of the experience. Under the hood, a 6.3-liter V-12 engine sits, generating 729 horsepower and 508 pound-feet of torque with its redline at a wailing 8,700 rpm. This ride packs more than a punch and has 80 percent of that torque is available from 2,500 rpm, helping to accelerate the rear-drive supercar to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds. Now that is super, super fast!

signature good looks with high-tech F1inspired switchgear controls. The steering wheel, in particular, reflects the F1 iconic all in one layout, with a “manettino” control layout of switches, knobs, and buttons are right on check. You can change gears, signal left or right or adjust the traction control with a flip of a switch – truly impressive! Ferrari you got my vote from the first gear shift!

The interiors of the F12 cabin is made to perfection wrapped with the finest leather trims, while it still maintains it

Many people have already read this novel, but in case you haven’t, here is a brief synopsis. This is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, above all, following our dreams.
