ABODE meets

Frances Hart og

fashion insider

This November, Doha’s Orientalist Museum is presenting the Past to Present: Art Conservation Conference, which will bring fine art conservationists from some of the world’s leading museums to Qatar. ABODE had the pleasure to meet with one of them: FRANCES HARTOG, the Textile Conservator from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, who will showcase a vintage Dior dress discovered and restored by the museum. Let’s discover how her passions for art and fashion began. When did you discover your love for textiles? A: Rather late: my interest in restoration or conservation came first and then I remember being completely captivated by a set of historic tapestries hanging in a stately home in the UK.

Was fashion one of your favourite interests since childhood? A: No, not really! Though I was always quite particular about what I wore, but girls generally are. I also had a cousin who wrote for a fashion magazine and I remember thinking she was very ‘cool’.

Working for V&A museum must be very rewarding. What makes your job so special and exciting? A: We work on an extraordinary variety of textiles; just this summer I conserved a large 16th century French wall hanging and prepared costumes for an exhibition whose subject was the pop star David Bowie. I work in a large team; there are 13 of us in Textile Conservation alone and another 40 in the Conservation Department as a whole, so there is an incredible pool of experience and skills to call on. We also have tremendous support from our curatorial colleagues with whom we work closely; their knowledge is always there for us to tap into.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? A: I am not sure

Frances working on the Zemire, vintage Dior dress

You must be so proud about the restoration story behind the wonderful “Zemire” vintage Dior dress. How would you describe the whole experience behind it? A: I think I was very lucky; the treatment

there has been a single highlight; I have worked on numerous projects since arriving at the V&A including major new galleries such as the British Galleries, the Islamic Gallery and the Medieval & Renaissance Galleries – each one of them fascinating and fulfilling. I also enjoy working on the more transient exhibitions, especially those that are costume based; as the opening approaches the work becomes intense and there is a concerted team effort to ensure the deadline is met - and when it is, a great sense of relief and achievement.

was based on attempting to clean the costume, which proved problematic and rather frightening. Even after all the testing, there was a real risk the cleaning could have been a failure, and left the costume damaged – but it wasn’t, it was very successful. It was tremendously helpful and reassuring to have the full support of the Exhibition’s Curator, Claire Wilcox; who having found and purchased “Zemire” had a personal interest in its treatment. The result for both us has been very satisfying.

What are your expectations about your trip to Qatar? A: I am greatly looking forward to seeing

What other projects have you got in the pipeline? A: Currently I am working on two more

Doha; from the pictures I have seen the architecture looks really exciting. I am also keen to see the Museum of Islamic Art and its wonderful collection.

How would you describe the connection between art and fashion? I would say the connection is very close. When

you look at the designs of the great couturiers such as Balenciaga and the lesser known Charles James, their costumes are about the cut, the sculptural form resulting in arresting silhouettes. At present we are preparing works of art inspired by Islamic tradition for the Jameel Prize and one of the entries is by the Turkish designer Ece Ege for her Dice Kayek label. The costumes are stunning sculptures in their own right and very interesting to work with.

costume exhibitions; one is a large exhibition of wedding dresses spanning three centuries with a contemporary finale, which opens in May 2014 at the V&A. The second is a touring exhibition of underwear opening in Australia in the New Year. It illustrates how the European Past to Present: ideal of the Art Conservation human form has Conference changed over the centuries. Thursday November 28 At Museum of Islamic Art auditorium

QELA

UNVEILED...

To celebrate the acclaimed launch of QELA and its flagship boutique opening in Doha, ABODE met up with Mr. Gregory Couillard, CEO of Qatar Luxury Group to discover more about this long awaited brand, which is set to go global very soon. What does QELA stand for? What is its significance? A: QELA comes from the word “Ekheelah” (Ek-hee-la), which is a breed of Arabic horses known for their beautiful eyes that have the appearance of having kohl applied. Kohl is an element synonymous with femininity in the Middle East and has been part of women's lives since the dawn of history. Since QELA has its roots in Qatari society it is inspired by local aesthetics and the local way of life.

QLG created the one and only luxury fashion line Made in Qatar. How did the whole concept come about? The initial motivation was to contribute to the initiation of a fashion industry in Qatar. Our objective was to create a brand that is international in style but true to its Qatari heritage. The team was animated by a real passion to create a brand for the long term, and a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship, creativity and local culture. To reach this goal we have set up the QELA studio and workshops in Doha. They are run by extremely talented craftsmen who are willing to pass down their savoir-faire and time-honoured traditions to younger generations and to perpetuate the timeless craftsmanship specific to the fashion industry.

How would you describe the QELA woman? The QELA woman is sophisticated, cultured and has an understated and

discrete style. She values timeless products that are produced using only the finest materials; made by only the more skilled artisans according to the best age old skills.

What were the main challenges to make this project possible? It was more of a positive excitement than a challenge, but of course as for any start up project: building the right team was key., gathering the finest artisans and talented designers. A same passion to share and pass down their specific know-how animates our team.

Describe the multi-cultural team behind the brand.

fashion for luxury boutiques in Qatar, and home to many other international high-end brands. The Pearl is also a popular development for luxurious living and attracts large numbers of visitors, which means our boutique is located perfectly for our clients. At present the boutique in the Pearl will be the only one in the region.

QELA will represent Qatar globally, recalling its local origins and culture. Paris will host the first QELA Boutique abroad. Do you have any further expansions plans for internationally? The first international boutique will open on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne in Paris. We have long term plans to open QELA boutiques in leading fashion cities of the world, but our concentration for now is on Paris.

Qatar Luxury Group’s mission is to build a luxurious portfolio of fashion, lifestyle and hospitality concepts in Qatar. Do you have any new exciting projects in the pipeline? We have lots of exciting projects, but I can’t reveal all our plans right now! We have QELA’s first international boutique opening in Paris. All three of our divisions – fashion, development and hospitality – have exciting plans set for the coming six months, but you’ll have to watch this space!

The QELA team is made up of talented designers and skilled craftsmen from all over the world, including Qatar. Our team is multi-cultural and openminded, which enhances their creativity and enriches their interaction. All QELA products are crafted by artisans who have spent their lifetimes acquiring and mastering the traditional savoir faire of the fashion industry. Elsewhere these skills are slowly being forgotten with time. The artisans working with QLG have a passion and commitment to creating pieces that are true to the very finest traditions.

Why did you choose the Pearl as the location for your first boutique? Are you planning to open few more boutiques in Doha or Middle East soon? The Pearl is the leading development

A Time to Relax

Are all those long hours at the computer logged in your aching muscles? With an array of massages that cater to your individual needs, a trip to Angsana Spa at the second floor of Wyndham Grand Regency hotel is in order! A soothing massage is the antidote and the benefits for the body are many: improved circulation, reduced physical fatigue, decreased mental stress and elimination of toxins. ABODE recommends the Indonesian Javanese massage if you want to relax and nap for an hour. The inviting ambiance of the room will immediately settle your busy mind into a relaxed state and your muscles will soon follow as your therapist lathers your body with oil, starting from your feet and working up to your shoulders. The strokes will certainly ease an aching back and tired muscles and the scent of lavender diffused throughout the room adds another soothing dimension. You know that your 60 minute massage is over when you hear a couple of soft ‘dings’, then the therapist will offer you juice or tea and dried apricot. What more could you ask for?

‘New life, new look,’ is the motto of these two ladies who are about to embark on new jobs. ABODE, along with Lucia Lounge, shed a ray of hope to spark their quiescent style!

Nitya Shukla, Freelance Writer She’s found her independence and worked hard to achieve a slimmer silhouette. Now she’s ready to ditch her t-shirt and pants for something sophisticated and classy. “Hopeless!” is all she can say, when asked why she wanted to have a makeover.

Tips from the Makeup Artist 1 Our model has lovely eyes. I do want to highlight them, adding a layer of eyeliner. Black eyeliner is a must if you want to open and liven up your eyes. 2 For lashes, apply three coats of mascara, sweeping it upwards to elongate short lashes. 3 Since we focused on the eyes the rest of the makeup should be light. We swept an apricot shade of blush to the apple of her cheeks. 4 Finish off with a pale-orange lipstick, then add gloss for extra shine.

Tips from the Hairstylist 1 Our model has a beautiful natural wavy hair so instead of cutting it really short I opted for an almost shoulder-length cut. 2 This style is very versatile, she can wash and wear it for busy mornings or she can blow-dry for those dinner nights. 3 To add body at the top area, which tends to be limp, I added a mousse to hold the hair in place.

Katie Roberts, PR Manager She has worked in Egypt for a long time and recently transferred to Qatar to catch a fresh breath of air. Her busy schedule keeps her style simple so she can manage every day, then she turned to ABODE to make her look more glamorous and dazzling.

Tips from the Makeup Artist 1 Katie is fair skinned and she likes very light make-up. I applied light concealer at the eye area then the foundation for the face and neck. 2 I chose a pink colour theme to give a healthy glow on the skin. 3 To bring out her blue eyes I selected brown shades, for it naturally complements this eye colour. 4 She has thin lips so we want to plump them a little by adding gloss to give the illusion of fullness.

Tips from the Hairstylist 1 To give her cheek a profile I cut her hair short so it will rest at the cheek area. 2 Since her hair is thin, I layered the cut to help give it body. 3 This is an everyday haircut, no need for elaborate setting.

Tips from the Stylist 1 Jumpsuits are a must in any women's wardrobe: they are stylish, effortless and believe it or not very flattering! 2 Monochrome tones are very chic and easy to wear as they complement any skin tone and mood. 3 Add some comfy heels and statement jewelry to finish off a glam look.

SCENTsational Photos Courtesy of Calvin Klein

ABODE had the chance to speak with the hottest perfumer in the fashion world, Caroline Sabas, who explained the unique mix she concocted for the newest Calvin Klein fragrance, DOWN TOWN. The result is feminine, unique and distinctive, the ideal signature scent for today’s modern woman. For whom did you create this fragrance? A: For a woman who knows who she is. She is confident, she is real and authentic. She is unapologetically feminine, and her scent is her signature.

What were the sources of inspiration to create this fragrance? A: I think every woman can relate to the essence of the Calvin Klein woman. She can be whoever she wants to be and owns her femininity. She embraces what is different about herself and has amazing confidence, which makes her sexy in her own way. I imagined she would want a fragrance that has signature and a level of sophistication. It would be confident, but not overpowering. She wears the fragrance for herself and when she does she feels like she is the only one wearing it. It is an extension of herself. For me, this fragrance embodies all of those elements and fits her.

Does this fragrance have similarities with the existing Calvin Klein fragrances? A: The Calvin Klein fragrances all have an addictive, signature warmth in the background that stands out and resonates well with consumers. Calvin Klein fragrances have a youthful, fresh feel. They are simple and complex at the same time without trying to impress anyone. They are an expression of the person wearing them. Beauty Q&A hair special

We know fixing your hair for a big event can be downright anxiety provoking without a professional hairdresser at your side. ABODE sought the help of celebrity hairstylist Asgar for some tips to help bring your mane to life! Pro-Keratin Refill L’Oréal Professionnel The secret to strong hair is out and the answer is keratin. Wash with L’Oréal’s keratin-rich correcting shampoo and the result will be nourished, restored and healthy hair.

Q.

How can you create curls without a curling iron?

A.

1. 2. 3.

Brush or comb your wet hair until it’s tangle-free.

Separate your hair into different sections to curl/ wave.

Twist strands of your hair (the thicker the strand, the looser the curl) until you can even see the twisting at the roots, then pin it down with 2 bobby pins, criss-crossing each other (Note: You do not have to wrap it into little buns. Just find a way to pin it to your head while keeping it twisted.)

4. 5. 6. 7.

Repeat for all your hair. You'll end up with many tiny little twists. Spray with a light hairspray.

Leave it there for about 15-20 minutes for best results.

Finally, shake out the curls to loosen them up and make them look natural.

Asgar’s tips for keeping your hair healthy:

can you fix a quick Q.How Updo?

A.

TOOLS: bobby pins, accessory, hairspray Prep: You’ll want the hair to have some texture before

you pin it up. If you have curly hair, you’re all set.

1.

Take the entire left side and start twisting near your ear. It’s best to twist it kind of tight and then loosen it up after you pin

everything. Stop just past the middle and add a large bobby pin for extra support. You can see where we placed it in Millie’s hair. When inserting the bobby pin, go back against the hair, almost like you’re putting it inside the twist you just created!

2.

Now gather all of the hair on the right, along with the hair left out from the other side and twist UP. Position it over the first

twist and pin using a large bobby pin. Tuck the hair that’s left out into the twist and add a couple more bobby pins for security.

3.

Now using a hand mirror, check it out from the sides and back to make sure it’s well- proportioned and balanced.

Loosen it up with your fingers or pull some pieces out around your face if you want a more romantic vibe, then add a veil of hairspray.

4.

Add a sparkly accessory if you want to add glamour to your style.

1 The winter months can dull hair. To ensure you keep a healthy shine, invest in a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Wash and condition your hair, then blast it with a cold water rinse to help seal in the conditioner. This kind of treatment will make your hair easier to style and adds extra shine. 2 Hair becomes damaged by exposure to the sun and sea during the summer months, and so needs to be nourished from within. An ordinary shampoo and conditioner is often not enough. You need an intensive moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and products with the word ‘replenish’ on them usually do the trick. 3 Try to add a hair treatment mask once a week to your hair care routine. 4 Moisturize your hair once a week with a hot oil treatment to promote a healthy scalp and nourished hair. Some natural oils that work particularly well include coconut oil and almond oil. 5 Give your hair a new lease on life in the autumn/ winter months by cutting it to get rid of split ends. Try to have your split ends cut every six to eight weeks to promote healthy hair. 6 If you use heat styling tools, then you must always use a good quality, nourishing heat defence spray or leave-in conditioner to protect the hair and keep it looking glossy and hydrated. This is particularly the case in the winter months when the cold winds, rain and the added heat from styling tools contribute to hair damage. 7 Try not to go out with wet hair, as the colder weather in the autumn and winter months can cause your hair to freeze at the cuticle and cause it to break.

Walking away from Diabetes A stroll along the Corniche or through one of the country’s parks is far from the minds of many of Qatar’s residents. However, Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Dr. Mahmoud Ali Zirie says walking is just what the doctor ordered.

According to Dr. Zirie, who is a Senior Consultant and Head of HMC’s Endocrinology, Diabetes Division, lifestyle interventions that support an increase in physical activity and weight loss can effectively prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. About 90 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults are type 2. If left untreated, diabetes can cause irreversible and serious damage, including heart failure, kidney failure, blindness and loss of limbs. While health experts have long touted the benefits of daily exercise, a new study has found that a short, brisk walk taken after meals is an effective way to curb the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study, published in the journal Diabetes Care,

found that walking post-meals can reduce blood sugar levels. “Blood sugar levels are the highest after meals and as we age our pancreas is less effective in releasing insulin, a hormone that helps lower blood sugar. This leads to higher blood sugar that can increase the risk of diabetes,” says Dr. Zirie. “A short walk two hours after meals can help normalize blood sugar levels.” If you are new to walking Dr. Zirie recommends starting slowly and trying to build a walking regime gradually, being mindful of the heat and staying hydrated. To achieve maximum health benefits walking should be moderate intensity. In other words, it needs to be faster than a stroll and brisk enough to raise your heart rate. Dr. Zirie adds that a healthy diet, regular physical activity and stopping smoking

can all prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. For people with diabetes, exercise lowers blood sugar and, like insulin, helps the body use its blood sugar efficiently. Exercise may also help insulin to work better. “Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to be more for more ntact ion co active, lose informat ommunications C weight and Corporate t Depar tmen become poration or C al ic ed Hamad M .q healthier,” ad a w w w.ham says Dr. Zirie.

Draperies These gold damask draperies are the first place your eye travels in this chic living room. Achieve a similar look with less expensive fabric in an equally brilliant colours. Splurge on elegant colours-drenched fabrics for pillows, where a little goes a long way. Small shades on the crystal chandelier add extra detail.

Contrasting Colours A contemporary colour palette of black, white and red makes a bold statement in this bedroom. Framing a series of inexpensive prints with a contrasting matting adds instant impact. Try painting your headboard and swapping out lamp shades to pick up your colour scheme.

54

dĂŠcor Paintings Custom beam work in this master bedroom highlights its lofty, 18-foot cathedral ceiling. The English oak chest is a great place to hide a television, on a lift system. If space allows, a seating area in the bedroom is a wonderful place to curl up with a magazine or have an intimate conversation. Keep colours neutral for a calming effect. To add impact, hang a grouping of paintings in a similar theme.

Details Create a feeling of luxury with a coffee table that has elegant legs or a strong architectural shape. This mirror happens to be an antique, but a similar look can be achieved with a reproduction. Chairs elevated with legs adds to the sophisticated look. Pleated lampshades are a great way to add detail without spending a lot of money.

ACCESSORIZE Covering upholstered furniture in a plush, colour saturated fabric denotes instant glamour. Create a similar look by adding silky pillows with contrasting fringe. Go for bold accessories of varying heights and shapes on your coffee and side tables. Can’t afford expensive art? Channel your inner artist and paint an abstract.

Do it Yourself Feeding The Birds

Bird Seed Ornaments

If you love nature and want to ensure your backyard becomes an aviary of cheerful sounds and colours, make sure you feed the birds in style! These fun bird seed ornaments are a great diy project..

1.

What you'll need Ingredients: • 1/2 cup water • 3/4 cup flour • 3 tablespoons corn syrup • 2 1/2 teaspoons unflavored gelatin, such as Knox • 4 cups birdseed or a mix of two cups general mixed seed, one cup of black oil sunflower seeds and one cup of white millet or rice. Utensils: • Medium or large mixing bowl • Nonstick cooking spray • 8-12 cookie cutters, thick, metal or plastic • Wax paper • Nonstick saucepan • Skewer, ball point pen, chopstick, or similar implement (for making holes) • String, yarn or twine, cut into 6-8 inch lengths • Wire cooling rack • Wooden spoon or rubber scraper How to get started: Make sure you have the right amount of birdseed no less than four cups - so you have enough for the ornaments to be thick. Remember to gather all the tools together and have them within your reach.

Tip:

2.

3. 4.

Generously spray each cookie cutter and with nonstick cooking spray and arrange them on a tray covered with wax paper that has also been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. On the stove, in a saucepan, bring water and corn syrup to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and gently add the gelatin, whisking it continually to dissolve. Stir until all clumps disappear. Take off the stove when gelatin is completely mixed in, do not over-boil the mixture. Transfer the syrup mixture to a mixing bowl and add flour. Stir until well blended; it will have a thick consistency. If too thick, add hot water; if too thin, add more flour. Add the birdseed and gently mix thoroughly. Spray nonstick on your spatula to ensure it remains clean. After the birdseed is mixed, spray both hands with nonstick spray and begin manually filling your cookie cutters with the mix. Keep your hands moist with nonstick spray, spraying them

5. 6.

7.

8.

constantly between each cookie cutter. Fill only one ornament at a time; but do so rapidly, as they will start to dry quickly. Pick up your skewer and make a hole on the top part of the cookie cutter, this is where you will insert the yarn or sting. MAKE sure you make the hole big enough for the yarn to fit. Leave the cookie cutter molds on a wire cooling rack to dry for a minimum of 6-8 hours, but preferably overnight or for a full day. This will ensure the bird seed ornaments do not fall apart when you remove them from the molds. The next day, gently remove the bird seed from the mold, thread the ribbon or twine through the holes in each ornament and tie in a tight knot leaving an open loop for hanging. If you have a problem threading, use a wideeyed tapestry needle to pull the ribbon or string through the hole. Now your birdseed ornaments are ready to hang for the birds to enjoy!

You can spray paint them and give them away as presents or use them as orna ments for your Christmas tree!

VINTAGE- GARDEN SHABBY CHIC

g n i v i g s k Th a n By Gabriela Ubidia Photography Jessie Palanca

Thanksgiving is celebrated at different times around the world. This month Americans celebrate this holiday. Either way the theme is the same, ‘a special thanks for a good harvest.’ As you invite family and friends over for a lunch or dinner, let our entertainment columnist Gaby Ubidia shows you how to prepare a banquet and decorate your table.

Entertainment:

• Brief background about Thanksgiving Almost every culture in the world has held celebrations of thanks for a plentiful harvest. The American Thanksgiving holiday began as a feast of thanksgiving in the early days of the American colonies almost four hundred years ago. Thanksgiving is a time for gifting your family and friends. The day is a time to show your gratitude and respect to your elders, friends, your siblings and also your colleagues. • Things needed for entertaining For the Thanksgiving celebration I decided to create a Vintage Garden Shabby Chic table with lots of amazing details. I incorporated a vintage table, colourful vintage drawers, crystal cake stand, lace table runners, a chandelier with colourful candles, woven elements by crochet for glasses and jars and a rustic, wooden backdrop to enhance the ambience. 62

Naked Berries Cake Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pan • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for pan • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup sugar • 2 large eggs plus 2 large egg yolks • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1/2 cup whole milk • 1 pound berries, hulled and thinly sliced • 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin (from a 1/4-ounce envelope) • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream

Procedure:

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter bottom of an 8-inch round cake pan, and line with parchment paper. Butter and flour paper and sides. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. • Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat butter and 1/2 cup sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs and yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. With mixer on low, alternately add flour mixture in 3 parts and milk in 2, beginning and ending with flour mixture; mix just until combined. Spread batter in prepared pan.

• Bake until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes; invert onto a wire rack to cool completely. Using a serrated knife, split cake in half horizontally; place bottom half, cut side up, on a serving plate. • Make topping: In a large bowl, combine berries and 1/4 cup sugar; set aside. Place 2 tablespoons cold water in a small saucepan, and sprinkle with gelatin; let soften 5 minutes. Place saucepan over very low heat, and stir until gelatin is dissolved. Remove from heat; let cool. • Using an electric mixer, beat cream and remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a large bowl until very soft peaks form. Continue to beat, and gradually add gelatin mixture; beat until soft peaks form. • Arrange half of berries over bottom cake layer; top with half of whipped cream, leaving a 1-inch border. Cover with top half of cake, cut side down. Top cake with remaining whipped cream, leaving a 1-inch border. Refrigerate cake and remaining berries separately, at least 1 hour (or up to 1 day). Just before serving, spoon berries over cake. Repeat the procedure for more tiers.

ABODE special

Thanksgiving Turkey Prep Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1 whole turkey (about 12 pounds), thawed if frozen, rinsed, and patted dry (neck and giblets chopped into 2-inch pieces; liver discarded) • 2 medium carrots, roughly chopped • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped • 1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped • Nonstick cooking spray • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature • Coarse salt and ground pepper • 2/3 cup cider vinegar • 1/2 cup packed dark-brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest, plus 2 tablespoons orange juice

Procedure:

• Let turkey sit at room temperature 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, with racks in upper and lower thirds. Place neck, giblets, carrots, celery, and onion in a heavy-bottomed metal roasting pan. Set a roasting rack over vegetables and coat with cooking spray. • Tuck wing tips underneath body of turkey. Tie legs together with kitchen twine. Rub turkey all over with 2 tablespoons butter; season with salt and pepper. Place turkey on rack in pan; roast on bottom oven rack until golden brown, 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees. Add 2 cups water to pan; roast until an instant-read thermometer inserted in thickest part of a thigh reads 125 degrees, about 1 hour. • Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, bring vinegar, brown sugar, and orange juice to a boil over high, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until mixture is syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in 2 tablespoons butter and orange zest. • When thermometer reads 125 degrees, brush turkey with glaze. Rotate pan and roast, brushing turkey with remaining glaze every 15 minutes, until thermometer inserted in the thickest part of a thigh reads 165 degrees, 30 to 45 minutes (tent turkey with foil if browning too quickly). Transfer turkey to a platter. Loosely tent with foil and let rest 30 minutes before carving. Reserve pan with drippings for Pan Gravy.

Cookies Ingredients:

• 2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 cups sugar • 2 large eggs • 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract • 2 teaspoons salt • 5 cups all-purpose flour

Procedure:

• In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, vanilla, and salt; mix on medium speed until combined. With mixer on low speed, add flour in 2 batches, mixing just until incorporated. • Preheat oven to 325 degrees with racks in upper and lower thirds. Let one disk of dough stand at room temperature just until soft enough to roll, about 10 minutes. Roll out dough between two pieces of plastic wrap to 1/4 inch thick. Remove top layer of plastic wrap. Cut out cookies with a 4-inch one-piece-shaped cookie cutter. To make an ornament, cut out a hole from the center of the neck about 1/4-inch from the edge using a straw. Transfer cookie dough on plastic wrap to a baking sheet. Transfer baking sheet to freezer, freeze until very firm, about 15 minutes. Remove baking sheet from freezer and transfer shapes to baking sheets lined with nonstick baking mats. Roll out scraps, and repeat. Repeat with remaining disk of dough. • Bake, switching positions of sheets and rotating halfway through, until edges turn golden, 15 to 18 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks.

I love what I do

The hands that heal A surgeon's life By Nitya Shukla Photography Jessie Palanca

Having a career that spanned over 40 years Dr. Alkadhi explains that his enthusiasm is maintained by the constant devotion to train new surgeons to deliver a high standard of care in a patient centered environment. Although he is basically a senior urologist in the section of urology, he is also Vice-Chairman of Hamad Corporation Department of Surgery, which include all departments of surgery in Hamad, Wakra, Alkhor and Rumaila hospitals, and nearly 2,000 surgeries are done in Hamad hospital alone each month. Daunting numbers, yet Dr. Alkadhi is constantly switching between being a doctor, surgeon, professor and mentor amongst a host of roles. This includes his responsibilities as vice chairman of the department of surgery and chairman of quality and patient safety committee. For the moment he relaxes and plays the part of an interviewee sharing his thoughts on what it takes to be a great surgeon, one of the most challenging professions in the world, besides being one of the most rewarding.

Changing The Trend HGH was recently in the media for carrying out the first pediatric kidney transplant in the country. Another first was the liver transplant, and robotic surgery. Also a world first was performing a weight reduction surgery successfully on the heaviest person on record. This is a clear indicator that HGH is perceived to be a trusted centre. Speaking about this Dr. Alkadhi said “I joined HGH in 2005 when Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari (current chairman of the dept of surgery) had just assumed office as head of urology at that time. Looking back, I think the amount of progress we have achieved in the past eight years has been tremendous”. The Department of Surgery and that of Urology has been on a

successful streak in the past few years, and is now recognized as one of the premier facilities at HGH, specially so since Dr. Hanan Al Kuwari assumed the chair of the Hamad Corporation when we started to have unprecedented support. A feather in the cap was when HGH became one of the coveted few hospitals in the world to introduce robotic surgeries, which was ideated first by Dr.Al Ansari, as per Dr. Alkadhi. Construction has also commenced on the New Surgery Centre at HGH, which comprises state-of-the-art operating theatres and is expected to be ready in 2015. “When I arrived here first, I used to see patients going to neighbouring or to their native countries for medical procedures, but now not only are they choosing to have their surgeries here with us, but we are also being trusted with corrective surgery for cases which were imperfectly done abroad. Here, Dr. Ansari offers a lighthearted remark, saying that HGH has become like a magnet for locals and expat patients! However, being trendsetters means that they have to create better surgeons and not just execute the difficult surgeries themselves.

Training the Best Involved with the HGH as a mentor and teacher for many junior doctors, Dr. Alkadhi says the process of becoming a surgeon is tedious and long. His own journey in medicine saw him graduating from College of Medicine, Baghdad University, after which he pursued post-graduate training in the UK with stints at prestigious centers like Kingston General Hospital Surrey, Royal Marsden Hospital, London and obtained

Dr. Sabah Alkadhi FRCS,FRCSE Vice Chairman Dept. of Surgery Chairman Quality Committee Dept of Surgery - Hamad Hospital Doha-Qatar

his post graduate degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in London and another from Edinburgh (FRCS, FRCSE) before he returned as a Consultant Surgeon & Urologist to Iraq and joined the Urology department at the College of Medicine, Baghdad University as a lecturer. He later became Professor and Head of that department. Dr Alkadhi is always respectful of the fact that at the end of the day he is dealing with a human life and the quality of life post-surgery, which is why surgeons need to do a perfect job. A rigorous and structured training program for residents is compiled and I am proud to say that our residents are equal match to international institutes.

Practice Really Makes Perfect Dr. Alkadhi explains that a surgeon’s work is never over, and exposure at early stages toughens them up for the road ahead. “Perhaps I was lucky that very early on, I ended up in urology right after my graduation, which exposed me to a high amount of work. My day began at 6 am and ended up at midnight, every day. Those days we doctors had to do everything, from drawing blood out from patients, filing paperwork for all surgeries, overseeing patient admissions.” An enduring passion for medicine and respect for human life can perhaps most succinctly describe why even after 40 years as a surgeon, Dr. Sabah AlKadhi, is still raring to go.

A Long-Lasting Bond

By Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca

His Excellency Nicholas Hopton and his family

More than four decades of friendship between Qatar and the United Kingdom lie behind an innovative joint venture and year-long cultural event. ‘Qatar UK 2013’ showcases a mutual love of the arts, sports, science and education, with fabulous exhibitions and special projects taking place in both countries. ABODE was delighted to speak to the UK ambassador, His Excellency Nicholas Hopton, about this undertaking, and his life as a new resident of Qatar. 88

people The long-standing relationship between Qatar and UK dates back to 1971. What changes have occurred through these years in terms of economic and political ties? A: Bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK have never been stronger. These strong ties are built on established trust and mutual support between friends. Qatar is a valued, strategic partner for the UK, and we are cooperating in a growing number of areas – foreign policy, trade and investment, energy, culture, sport, education and training to name a few. Qatar has been a key ally on regional foreign and defence policy cooperation in recent years. To give you a sense of our growing economic ties – the value of goods exported to Qatar rose from £363 million in 2005 to £1.31 billion in 2012. Qatari gas represents around 40 per cent of the UK’s total gas imports. All of this is supported by regular Royal and ministerial visits in both directions. HRH The Duke of York visited Qatar last month for the inauguration of UCL Qatar and HH Sheikha Moza also visited the UK last month.

Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture is in full blast, can you highlight one event that we must not miss? A: If you’re in Qatar, don’t miss Damien Hirst’s exhibition, Relics, from 10 October 2013 to 30 January 2014 at Al Riwaq. It’s Hirst’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East, spanning 25 years of his career. It

includes some of his iconic works, and also some previously unseen works. For those of you in the UK, you must see the Pearls exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, organized in partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority. This exhibition explores the history of pearls from the early Roman Empire to the present day. It’s definitely one of the highlights of Qatar UK 2013. Of course, the intense cooperation between Qatar and the UK will not end with the Year of Culture 2013. In fact, we are already forming ambitious plans to build on the legacy of 2013. Watch this space!

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser visited the UK last June to foster new ways to promote education and cultural partnership between our countries. Can you share with us the progress or plans as the result of the visit? A: There has been lots of progress in our education and cultural partnership. HH Sheikha Moza visited London again in September for the signing of two important memoranda of understanding between Qatar and the UK. The first established a high-level bilateral forum on research and education and the second focused on Arabic language teaching in UK schools.

Can you tell us more about the partnership of the British Library and Qatar Foundation? This is an exciting three-year project, in collaboration with the Qatar National

Library, to digitize more than 500,000 pages from the archives of the East India Company and the India Office, plus 25,000 pages of medieval Arabic manuscripts –all of which will be made available online for free for the first time. It will transform people’s understanding of the history of the Middle East, and the region’s relationship with the UK and the wider world. When it goes live, the site will offer and enable users to contribute to the online resource by adding their own memories, photos and stories of the Gulf region.

What is the paramount significance of being a diplomat? A: It is a privilege to represent one’s country as a diplomat. The role is important in building relations between countries and regions, making the world a safer place, increasing people’s prosperity, managing crises and looking after the interests of both governments and ordinary citizens. Very challenging at times, but also a varied and stimulating career. I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity.

With your busy schedule how do you interact with British citizens? A: I try to meet face to face with as many UK citizens as possible. Not only some of the 20,000 or so living in Qatar, but also those visiting. It is important for me to hear their views, learn from their experiences and, where possible, support activities which strengthen the UK’s relations with Qatar.

woman of the month

Mahasen sayed hassan Okasha

Heart with A Cause By Sandee Thompson Photography Jessie Palanca

Mahasen Sayed Hassan Okasha is the head of the Health Education department at Qatar’s Cancer Society. She works out of Rumailah Hospital in Doha but is rarely in her office, spending the bulk of her time presenting workshops and lecturing in schools, hospitals, banks and businesses. Liaising with many different groups within the country, she spreads her message of healthy living wherever she goes.

A

fter sitting in on a workshop Dr. Okasha at the College of the North Atlantic last year, I was inspired to meet this dynamic woman and learn more about the important work she does today. Mahasen Okasha moved to Qatar from Egypt fifteen years ago. Prior to this, she did her university studies in Miami, Florida (USA) and Alexandria, Egypt. She began working in Qatar as an associate professor and transferred to the Qatar Cancer Society in 2005. Having volunteered for the Diabetes and Cancer Societies while she worked at the university, the switch to becoming a trainer and health educator seemed as natural as breathing. Her two daughters are also involved in community work, one as a journalist in the UK and the other through her work in the training department at the Qatar Foundation. The Qatar Cancer Society was started in 1997 and its main aim is to educate the community regarding cancer, healthy lifestyles and nutrition. They reach out through brochures, lectures and workshops, all of which are available in Arabic and in English. Mahasen and her co-workers talk about the importance of doing breast self- exams (BSEs), eating healthily, the effects of smoking and drinking and the woes of being lazy in this new, technological world we live in. Mahasen explained, “We live in a lazy mode. We eat too much and move just a little…not like our grandmothers.” This is potentially problematic because cancer “likes fat” and seems to thrive where cells

are overworked, hormones are out of whack and the stress of a busy lifestyle causes us to not take care of ourselves. In 2007, one out of every five cancers diagnosed in Qatar was breast cancer. I was reassured that this number is improving because more people are being checked early and there is less ignorance about the disease than there was six years ago; however, it is still quite disturbing because many of those diagnoses come at a later stage when it is harder to treat. According to Dr. Okasha, women, and men, need to learn to do breast self-exams by the time they are 20 years old. This would help ensure that any changes in breast tissue would be noticed and brought to their doctor’s attention immediately. Mahasen also said that women should start mammograms by the age of 38, as cancer is being detected in younger women every year. There is a screening program at the Women’s Hospital put on by the Al Amal group where women can go two evenings per week to be checked. This helps in early discovery of cancer and a quick diagnosis, both of which ensure treatment is faster and less harsh on the patient. I asked Mahasen what message she wanted people to know about her work and about breast cancer specifically and she said she wanted people to know that “cancer is not contagious”; that you cannot get it from an embrace or from talking about it. She mentioned support groups in the city, such as The Hyatt Group and Thinkpink, and how cancer is such a difficult subject for people to

talk about but that it is necessary for prevention and support. She said that what saddens her is other people’s reaction to people diagnosed or living with cancer and that what they really need is a hug and renewed energy to face the world and their disease head on. Dr. Okasha reminded me that the media has a role to play in this perception of cancer as a killer and said “We need to see a survivor to have the hope and to know it is not the end of the world.” People need to see that you can have cancer and come back strong and healthy with a zest for life. Being a breast cancer survivor myself, I agreed with everything Mahasen said to me. We as a society need to see people moving through the disease and coming out the other side stronger, more energized and healthy. We need inspiration and we need to believe in the possibility of recovery and of a cure. Cancer is not cause for any shame or embarrassment. As Mahasen said to me, “Don’t be afraid. Go early to be cured….go early to be well….go early and be happy early”. It’s excellent advice from a wise and kind woman who has seen it all and has embraced each and every woman who has come to her for comfort and understanding. I look forward to hearing Mahasen Sayed Hassan Okasha lecture again. She is a force to be reckoned with and I’m glad she is on our side!

Don’t be afraid. Go early to be cured, go early to be well…

In A Day’s Work 5.30am Time to get up. To be in the hospitality industry you have to have energy. People who are suited to it are the ones who wake up and want to jump out of bed and come and please people. 6.30am I reach the hotel and I hit the gym to start the day on a high note. During the workout my brain is on fast-drive thinking about the day ahead and I make mental notes of things that need to be done. 7.30am I arrive at my office and prepare for the daily operational meeting, reviewing the night manager’s reports and catching up on the 60 or so emails that come through overnight. I also check on breakfast and walk through the restaurant to say hello to guests. 7.50am Next up is my first walk around the property for the day (assuming that nothing more pressing jumps in my path). I love going out to walk around the property and see it with my own eyes. On this walk I try to hit as much of the property as I can, the pool, guest areas, outlets, back of house etc.

After Work I am out at least three or four nights a week at a also come in on Fridays at times during our Friday brunch. It’s see that as taking my work home. 94

What really goes on behind the scenes? In the first of a new series investigating roles in the various industries, Fabien Chesnais, general manager of the Mövenpick Hotel Doha, talks to ABODE

8.30am Then there’s the daily operational meeting, where my executive team take turns to report on what has happened the night before and what needs addressing in the short term. The idea is that everyone knows what is going on for the day. 9.15am On a typical day I am very visible and always around the hotel meeting and greeting staff. You have to be in touch with the nerves of what is going on. After my walk-around, I have more strategy and planning meetings. At the moment we are about to embark on creating a brand new boardroom as an addition to our existing meetings and events facilities.

1pm I often eat in the staff cafeteria and try to sit with a different member of staff, as this is a valuable way of finding out what is going on. A lot of my job is about knowing what is happening all the time. My main concern is the care and welfare of the staff – I am absolutely passionate about this. I always say: “You are only as good as your weakest link.”
