Dear Readers: Welcome to our October Issue, which every year is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. This subject is very close to our hearts, because as a monthly lifestyle magazine it is our duty to talk about it and highlight all the services offered in our country, how to recognize its symptoms, where to get professional treatments and above all, how to prevent it. We would like to invite you to read about the lives of two very inspiring ladies who are survivors of breast cancer disease and underwent treatment in Doha. They give us great hope for the future and proof that it can be overcome! It is vital to support the charities behind this cause. Ford’s Middle East, in particular, has supported the Breast Cancer cause for 18 years not only through donations surpassing $110 million but also through their “Warriors in Pink” campaign.

My life,
my Style
by francesca moser
Junita Vave, a former Miss Solomon and now Booking Manager at the Model agency Trinity Talent Qatar talks to ABODE about her passions and busy schedule
Junita at wo
Junita is originally from the Solomon Islands but relocated to the UK in 1999 prior to moving to Qatar. She is one of the three founding members of Trinity Talent Qatar. This successful business started as a hobby in 2006 and then eventually led to the creation of the largest and oldest talent agency in Doha. Let’s discover what goes on behind the scene of a busy model agency. How do you source your models in Doha? Models come and go in Qatar however we are very fortunate that we get hundred registrations a week from new talents. These models live in Qatar and have worked before as models so are very keen to keep and develop their career here too. What is your secret to juggle such a successful business? The main secret would have to be the passion for this industry. Without
rk
enjoying what you do, you will not deliver to your best potential. Keeping healthy is also very important to keep your body in the right form in order to function well. I go to the gym twice a week and my daughter keeps me busy when I get home from work and at weekends. A good balance with family life, pleasure, work and play is the secret I guess. Working in fashion means you always have to look good, what’s your secret? Having your own sense of style is very important because it distinguishes you from others. I am a mother of a 3 year old girl, but that doesn’t mean that I forget about myself. There is always a way to balance everything. My image is very important because I work in an industry where we are judged by the way we look so I try to look after my appearance. I do not follow trends but I buy what suits my body shape and I wear makeup that compliments my skin tone. Any exciting new launches and projects for the future? This month we are celebrating our 6th year Anniversary so we are very excited about this. We are also working on a huge international project which will take place at the end of the year so stay tuned for more infomation.•

Beauty Q&A
You ask, the experts answer... Compiled by Marlynne Mallari Dela Pena
This month ABODE had the chance to speak to one of Bobbi Brown’s professional team. Mr. Rafal Straszewski answers your most awaited questions.
Q.
Should I wear eye liner on the upper eye lid, or both upper and lower? Are there any particular rules? Deliah
A.
Bobbi believes that every woman should use eyeliner to make eyes stand out. The rules are: choose a colour that is darker than your eye colour; never apply liner only on the lower lid; if you decide to apply liner on the lower lid, it should be softer than the line on the upper lid and both lines should meet in the outer corner of the eye.
Q.

Cleansing skin at least twice a day is key, using specific products right for your skin type. Tailor made skin routine needs to be always determined during consultation with a beauty expert preferably once per season, especially when weather conditions change.

Q. I have an oval shaped face, how should I apply blush to make it look fuller? Chet A. Bobbi uses blush only on the
cheeks to create a healthy and pretty look. She does not correct the natural shape of the face as her philosophy is to enhance woman’s beauty and not to change it. When choosing your blush, make sure that it is from the same colour family as the lipstick or gloss that you use.

How do you make blue eyes pop? how can I create Kim Kardashians smokey eyes? Sone
Blue eyes will be enhanced using Bobbi’s eye shadows in Taupe, Gray, Heather, Slate and Lilac shades. Create the smoky eyes look in few simple steps: Highlight the brow bone in a light matte shadow and sweep across the entire eye, this will allow the darker colours to blend. Apply a medium intensity shadow to the lower lid and into the crease; continue to layer the same colour to make it darker and more intense. Check that you can see the eye shadow when your eyes are open. Ensure the shadow is blended and there are no harsh lines. Apply liner along the top lash line. Ensure the top line is thick enough so you can see it when your eye is open. Keep the bottom liner softer and meets at the outer corner of the eye. Line as close to the lashes as possible (no space between lashes and liner). Blend a dark eye shadow over the pencil or gel liner (before the liner dries) for a smudged look.
Q.
How to hide dark circles & puffy eyes? Fran
A.
Bobbi calls the concealer “the secret of the universe” as it perfectly solves the problem of dark circles. Apply on the lower lid the eye cream with primer, it can be either Bobbi’s Hydrating Eye Cream or Extra Repair Eye Cream; then apply the corrector that will neutralize darkness under eyes in either peach or pink tone depending on the colour of darkness under eyes; choose a concealer that is one to two shades lighter than your foundation and apply it on the top of corrector, it will lighten the area under eyes. Finally, set concealer with powder to ensure long wear effect.
Q. What would be your best advice for smokers maintaining their lip colour? Leah A. It is recommended to use either long-lasting, non transfer formula of lipstick or, another way of fixing lipstick is to apply loose powder with a brush over the colour through one very thin layer of Kleenex.
Q.
I have olive skin. How can I cover my pimple
marks? Sri
A.
The best product to cover pimple marks is Bobbi’s “Touch up stick” in the colour corresponding with the colour of foundation. It should be applied directly on the spot after the foundation. As the colour should match skin tone it can also be applied directly on the skin if a woman does not use foundation. In both cases powder should be applied on top for long-lasting result.

Stepping into Fall with a
Chic Home Office
By Suzy Q Photography Maegan Tintari
Get your own office into tip top shape this fall and you are more than likely to have a better and more productive work ethic throughout the day.
G
etting rid of the clutter, dusting off and making it over in a new fashionable style is ought to get you started on the right track this season. This glossy home office shared by Maegan Tintari who blogs over at LoveMaegan.com is one chic space that translates into her creative blog full of ideas, inspirations and quality material. Made over in an electric colour palette of black, white, and pink, she managed to create a positive space full of light and life. Maegan made over her office using mostly Ikea furniture and a few antiques like her Grandmother’s lamps and one-of-a-kind trinkets. A shabby-chic vibe was put into the mix using vintage storage boxes, an antique painting, and an antique secretary desk. Get started on your own space with these three easy steps:
1)
De-clutter, and repeat until you get rid of all the items you don’t need and stick to only those you really can’t live without.
2)
Choose a colour palette of three colours and stick to those. Choose one colour that adds an accent to your space. (Maegan chose white, black and pink in this case).
3)
Use sleek modern furniture and mix in a few antiques for a look that’s unique, fashionable, and timeless at the same time. Add a striking piece like Maegan added a zebra rug to create an edgy look and an eye catching focal point.

Sara Cosgrove, Head of Interior Design at the Studio Harrods, shows us how to recreate an English Cottage décor, how to transform your bedroom into a modern boudoir and how to organize your family living space in style. Interior Design by The Studio Harrods
English Cottage Chic This large 15th Century Tudor cottage was totally stripped back then reconfigured with a new extension added to the building in 2010. The entire property was then interior designed by The Studio to create a family home in the heart of the English Countryside. The master bedroom, part of the new build, was designed in keeping with the original timber frame structure and features bespoke fitted joinery in limed oak, beautiful floral window treatments and brightly coloured fabrics and leathers for the upholstery. Lighting design was sympathetic throughout the property to enhance the rest of the interior.

Bespoke Interiors (Above) The master bathroom was designed from scratch by the team at The Studio who hand selected porcelain floor tiles as well as smooth stone for the walls in the shower unit. Limed oak fitted joinery was continued into the space for consistency and includes a burnt orange leather-lined belt drawer to compliment the leather ottoman in the dressing area. The copper bath tub lends a boutique hotel feel to the bathroom and the floor lighting gives the space real ambience.
Sweet Dreams (LEFT) The padded headboard was upholstered using silk velvet with bronze nailing detail to add luxury to the master bedroom. Superior quality bed linen was used to dress the bed which was topped with handmade cushions.

ABODE’s guide to planning and building your own home in Qatar
By Margarito Mallari, Project Manager, CEG International
Most people have a “dream house” - it’s human nature to desire to have a perfect place to live in. But how about making it reality? 64

W
hat would your dream house be like? A house is the expression of our life and need: personal, financial and religious. Each has his or her own preferences, likes and loves, so if you are to build a house for an individual, every house is unique. If you take a block of apartments all built to the same plan, when they are occupied each apartment will have different interior design, furniture layout, and some will have altered layouts, too.To achieve our dreams, there are a lot of things to consider.
Budget, Design and Construction. Each of these has a direct effect on each other. Budget is the expected cost for the total work that will be done for the house. It will include the design architect’s fee, construction and furnishings. Design is a very important phase where there will be lot of activities and interaction between the client and architect. There are three stages: Sketch, Preliminary and Detail Design.
ask experts
Construction is the final stage, implementing all that has been done in the design stage. Prior to construction, local building legislations must be adhered to. Now choose an architect who is passionate on the work and well experienced in the field. Check with your friends for recommendations. Check the fees and agree on the terms of the contract before you start. The architect will ask for a client’s requirements and you must then present the information you have prepared. The architect’s

Glass plays an important role in design, here it was used as a controlledenclosed space but the visual effect is so open!
Architectural forms contrasting the setting of natural landscape! recommendations should then firm-up your requirements. The size of the house will be finalized, and this information will give you the basic budgetary cost of the project, which is very important.
Cost A house is a very big investment and its cost is proportionate to the area: the bigger the area the bigger the cost. The cost per square metre becomes higher annually. Here in Qatar, this is approximately 4,000 QR per square metre on average, and this will go up if you’re buying luxury materials. At this stage if you have a budget and you’re keeping to it, good! You can proceed to the next stage. However if you’ve bust your budget, you will need to cut back. Your architect can help you with this.
After you have settled the area and budgetary cost, the architect will prepare the design for you. This is called the Sketch Stage. This stage will include the floor plans, elevations, and a 3D perspective. If you’re not satisfied with the design, you can ask them to change it.
Design Once you’re satisfied, the architect will request your approval and will proceed to the next stage which is Detail Design, creating working drawings. This ensure all structural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical elements are coordinated. The final product of the process is the engineering design drawings. A list of the type of materials that will be used will be prepared, including the bill of quantity.
After this long process, the outcome of these drawings and documents are the “tender documents”. Please take note that all drawings need to go through process of municipality approvals to get the building permit in Qatar, and this will be the responsibility of the architect, but you are responsible for all fees incurred. The next stage is the tender, different contractors will bid to construct your dream house.
Construction And then finally, construction will begin! You will see your dream come to reality and this is very exciting in the sense that little-by-little you will understand how the stages of construction come together. Some people will leave this to the architect alone, but I encourage you to be part of

Building your own home is a very big investment, and a very big achievement.
The architect is your representative on site. The construction work will be done according to the schedule presented by the contractor and approved by the architect. After the construction the site will be handed over to you. Congratulations!
All those who’ve gone through building their own “dream house” know how hard it is, but also how rewarding the end result can be.

Another Milestone by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Peña Photography Jessie Palanca
Two years ago, Qatar and Brazil discussed strengthening mutual relations in various fields to work on ways to support each other. Today, we take a glance at the highlights of this partnership. ABODE meets His Excellency Tadeu Valadares, Brazilian Ambassador in Doha.
B
razil the largest country in Latin America has reached another milestone having just signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar. We talked to His Excellency Tadeu Valadares to find out more about how things have changed between the two countries. He also candidly talks about his love for soccer, traditional dance and his passion for arts. ABODE: How did you get involved in diplomacy?
TADEU VALDARES: I became gradually involved with diplomacy more than four decades ago. To be precise: in 1966, at that time I was a young man living in Rio de Janeiro, my first job was a very uncommon one: working as cryptographer for Itamaraty, the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil. In 1971, after having attended the Brazilian diplomatic academy for two years I became a diplomat, a Third Secretary. Immediately after that I moved from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília and began my diplomatic career. ABODE: What were your impressions of life in Qatar? TV: My wife and I arrived in Doha last January, so in a way I am still "landing" in Qatar. My first impression was extremely positive and enduring. Multicultural and cosmopolitan Doha is truly amazing, a rare combination of modernity and opulence nuanced by a strong sense of
tradition. This unusual mix is systematically reinforced by ingrained Qatari respect for the past, for cultural inheritance. In very personal terms, Doha is unique for me because this is the first time I’ve lived in an Arab country. In fact, Qatar is a whole new and appealing experience. ABODE: What is the most distinct relation between Brazil and Qatar? TV: For me Brazil and Qatar are still in the first stage of an evolution that in diplomatic terms started a little more than six years ago. This ceaseless effort led to the strengthening of bilateral ties in almost all domains, from trade and investment to technical and intellectual cooperation; from exploring political convergences to enhancing diplomatic understandings; from improving consular services to fostering cultural exchanges. In political terms, our bilateral relations are perfect, not a single cloud in the sky. At the economic, commercial and financial levels, both countries have made important progress in the last few years. But what Brasil and Doha have achieved so far is only an invitation to do much more. ABODE: What is your next step to further strengthen your bilateral relations with Qatar? TV: Maybe it is better to speak of steps, in plural, instead of step singular. Brazil and Qatar are incrementally exploring new opportunities in the economic sphere. For instance, some of the biggest Brazilian companies, four or five of them huge enterprises belonging to the construction
sector, have already established themselves in Doha. They are ready to contribute to the implementation of Qatar´s strategy of sustainable development. New avenues are opening up for both countries. These emerging trends will possibly include cooperation beneficial to third countries in Asia, Latin American and Africa. Political dialogues between Brasíl and Doha are another important facet of our diplomatic relations. We are permanently exploring and expanding significant areas of convergence. ABODE: Qatar & Brazil are enhancing collaboration to develop tourism investments between the two countries. What are your plans to strengthen cooperation in tourism? TV: The Embassy of Brazil in Doha has a Trade Promotion Sector ready to support Qatari and Brazilian businessmen interested in promoting tourism in both directions. As Qatar Airways offers a daily nonstop flight between Doha and São Paulo, in the short or in the medium run tourism will for sure gain more and more weight. Tourism, I am quite convinced, will become an important part of the bilateral economic landscape. We can say that the Embassy plays a supporting although important role in business deals. The business of businessmen is making business. An Embassy encourages and facilitates their deals, promotes contacts, helps serious companies and so on. But of course the Embassy´s actions cannot trespass. It is only reasonable to acknowledge that some territories are “chasse gardée”

of the entrepreneurial classes. ABODE: Your country will be hosting FIFA World Cup in 2014. What preparations are being done to promote this event? TV: The World Cup is one of the two most important sport events that Brazil is organising in the next four years, after having attained indisputable sucess in 2007 (Pan American Games) and 2011 (World Military Games). Next year Brazil will host FIFA Confederation Cup. If we focus in what is really essential, it becomes crystal clear that for five years Brazil has been working hard in order to prepare a great World Cup in 2014, and an amazing version of the Olympic Games after that. ABODE: Lastly, what is the first place you’ll recommend a tourist visiting Qatar? TV: If I had to mention only one place to be visited in Qatar, be sure I would say: "Go to the Museum of Islamic Art, give yourself time enough to be marvelled. The Museum belongs to that strange territory where language becomes silence and vision, contemplation". •

F3 Racing Enthusiast To Successful Hotelier by Nitya Shukla & Marlynne Mallari Dela Peña Photography Jessie Palanca

A
t the age of 30 he achieved what most people are still aspiring for, to be a General Manager of a luxury hotel. His extensive experiences and humble beginnings gave him a solid foundation to reach the pinnacle of success.
ABODE: If you weren’t a hotelier, what else would you be doing? JK: I’m actually a motor sports enthusiast and hold an international F3 racing license and had participated in the recent Bahrain Grand Prix where I raced in the opening ceremony. So if the growth of my career as

a hotelier is any indication I would probably be on the Grand Prix tracks as a professional F1 driver by now. ABODE: How did you end up as a hotelier then? JK: I have been with the Mövenpick group since the onset of my career in 1997. I have always known I wanted to work in this industry. I graduated from Hotel Management College, Groningen in the Netherlands, and started my career in Food and Beverage. When I graduated I took my first position as an Assistant Catering and Banqueting Manager at Mövenpick Hotel Regensdorf in Zurich and then Assistant F&B Manager at Mövenpick Hotel Beijing. The values I learned in F&B gave me a firm foundation for my role as General Manager at Mövenpick Resort & SPA El Alamein. I’ve spent 14 years in the hospitality industry working for luxury hotels and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
Always set goals for “yourself. ” jan kaiser
ABODE: What are the best advantages of working at Mövenpick, Doha and what are the challenges? JK: The best part of working at Mövenpick Tower and Suites Doha is the constant challenge of being in such a rapidly developing market. This is my fourth position as General Manager of a Mövenpick property and Doha has been the most challenging with such an aggressive market. With the announcement of the 2022 FIFA Games, Doha can look forward to a further 81 hotels opening in the next 10 years. Doha is both a luxury and corporate market with 75% of all travel into Qatar being business related. ABODE: Running a hotel means a tough balancing act, that must always come with a smile. How do you manage it? JK: It can be a difficult job but I’m thankful to have a great team who is always very supportive. A smile comes easily when you enjoy what you do. ABODE: What are the challenges of being a hotelier in the 21st century and incorporating technology at every step? JK: Technology is developing at such a rapid pace it is often difficult to know what software, systems or equipment to utilize especially as you wish to provide the guest with the best experience and facilities. We have a great IT team who are constantly researching new ideas and equipment. ABODE: Have you got a quick advice for upcoming hoteliers? JK: Always set goals for yourself. Your biggest achievements can only be the feeling of reward you get when you know you have achieved something for yourself. •
QUICK ANSWERS: Hotelier on Holiday 1. When you arrive at a hotel, what is the first thing you notice as a guest? The service. 2. When booking a hotel, what method do you prefer (travel agent, call, email, online, mobile)? I usually book online. Technology has made it very easy to find great rates on the web. I’m also a member of several loyalty schemes and frequent flyers clubs. 3. When was the last time you used a travel agent? Quite recently for business, I used Regency Travel and Tours they are always very efficient. 4. What would fail your quality test in a hotel/hotel room? I come from an F&B background so I have high expectations of food: ingredients have to be fresh and well presented at all the time. 5. What’s the one thing you always hope Room Service should provide in the food menu? Variety and something unexpected. I like to keep light when I’m travelling for business so I always look for healthy options. 6. What do you prefer, an espresso or a selection of fine teas? I’m actually a tea connoisseur, I love great tea rooms. The Ritz in London is my favourite.

Luiza Pancoti Luiza Pancoti 54-year-old, a mother of three sons, was diagnosed with cancer in January 2009. She’s living in Qatar since 21 years with her family. A former nurse, she manages her own tailoring business.
L
uiza has a bubbly personality and a very positive outlook on life. After her diagnosis, she refused to panic. She tells us that she was confident that there were good treatments available, and that she knew that this was all she needed to get through it and recover. “When I knew I had cancer, I didn’t get sad, because I knew I wouldn’t die” she says. Luiza’s family has been very supportive during her illness and that kept her going. “My sons were always hugging and kissing me. My husband and children have always been there for me. I’m a very lucky lady” After a month in her home country of Brazil, Luiza continued her treatment in Qatar. “It’s so different here, it’s like being in a five-star hotel, and everybody is treated equally, no matter where you come from,” she tells ABODE. Like many cancer
patients, she suffered from adverse reactions from the treatments, and one of them was losing hair. “I shaved all of my hair as it was falling out everywhere at home. I didn’t want to look at the mirror, but my son kissed my bald head and kept telling me I was beautiful,” she adds. HOW CANCER HAS CHANGED HER “I have learned to set my priorities”, she says. “My priorities are my family, my life, my friends and my health. I’ve become more patient. I see to it that I will not let stress get to me. I used to be under a lot of stress at work, the main key for health is no stress. I also started to do yoga, I feel peaceful and it helps me control the mind and body.”
INSPIRATION “I thank God that this disease came to me and not to my children,” she says. “My family is my inspiration. I always go out with my boys and I also spend time with the people I love and trust.” ADVICE TO WOMEN “Nobody cares about their body when they are in good health,” says Luiza. “But it’s not forever. Check yourself on a regular basis. Don’t hesitate to go to the doctor, because early detection is easy to treat. Do this not only for yourself but for the people you love, your kids and your family.”

MARISA SILVA Married to a pilot, she was told of her diagnosis while her husband was away flying. “I spent the most terrible weekend of my life,” she says. “I didn’t want to tell him over the phone so I had to wait for him to get back home. Every time she had chemotherapy, Marisa recalls that she would whisper to the liquid that was being infused in her body “you’re going to cure me”, she would say.
Marisa went back to Brazil for breast reconstruction and came back to Qatar to continue her treatment, confident of her friends’ full support. “When I told them I had cancer, I did not ask for sympathy, instead I asked them to pray for me,” says Marisa.
And cured, she was. Nowadays Marisa is busy caring for her five pets, and a former physical education teacher, she has gone back to her passion of water sports, and leads a very active life.

Health and Wellness
At the Workplace By Elsbeth Blekkenhorst, Managing Director Global Women Qatar
To maintain a healthy lifestyle at the workplace represents one of the biggest dilemmas that organizations and employees are faced with around the globe today. How do we stay healthy at the workplace? Many of us are clinging to a computer screen 8 to 10 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week, which drains our energy levels and affects our health over time. It directly influences our physical, mental, economic and social wellbeing and in turn, the health of our families, communities and society. How are these all inter-related and what factors have impact on our health? These factors are the following:
Elsbeth Blekkenhorst and Danielle Duttenhofer
Founders of Global Women Global Women Qatar was established in January 2012 as Qatar’s first employment agency to focus exclusively on the recruitment of women who already reside in Qatar or from overseas. Global Women Qatar is a very dynamic, rapidly growing employment agency with both local and expatriate women in its database. The candidates come from different educational backgrounds with a variety of qualifications and skills.

1} The Individual Employees are the organization’s key resource - staff health and wellbeing should be promoted at all times. 2} The Working Environment must be safe and healthy. Employees’ health and welfare must be protected, through risk assessments and workplace policies. 3} The Organizational Structure can have a significant effect on morale and on how employees feel about their work. Management style, communication systems, training opportunities and staff development all shape an organization & therefore its employees. All these three factors interact in a workplace and make it the organization that it is. A health- at- work program must target all three of these components. An employee will work better and more productively in a safe and healthy working environment, and in an organization where they are valued. More and more organizations start to realize that action needs to be taken. The concept of health promotion at the workplace is becoming increasingly relevant as more private and public organizations recognize that future success in a globalizing marketplace can only be achieved with a healthy, qualified and motivated workforce. How do I reduce my stress level and increase my fitness levels? It is known that job conditions are a major source of stress in our lives and therefore it is very important that you are aware of your stress levels and to try to reduce them with keeping up a healthy lifestyle. In Qatar there are many sports facilities you can make use of such as gym facilities at all the major hotels and a variety of sport clubs such as Doha Dolphins, a great swimming club for both children and adults. Treat yourself as well to a nice massage or pedicure, this will reduce your stress levels and keep your muscles smooth. To find out what is going on in Qatar check out the events magazine Qatar Happening.

As An Employee, How Do I Stay Healthy At The Workplace? For most of us our time at work takes up much of our waking life. While there's no denying that work can cause stress, aches and pains, it doesn't have to be a negative experience. There are plenty of changes you can make that can help make your work life happier, healthier and more productive.
So How Does An Organization Keep Its Employees Healthy? There are many small steps an organization can take to promote wellness. In fact, a gesture as small as providing fresh fruit once a week can be a very simple way to show your employees that their health is important to the company. Here are a couple of ideas to bring your company closer to wellness: 1. Encourage exercise For example, offer discounts or partially subsidize memberships to a local gym or exercise club. And encourage the entire office to use the stairs. At the TORCH Staircase Run 2012 The Torch’s General Manager Mr Foltin was the first one to climb the stairs to show a great example of exercise and health. 2. Emphasize education Brown bag luncheons or break-time seminars are prime opportunities for helping employees learn more about healthy habits. Invite speakers to lead sessions on cooking healthy meals, staying healthy while travelling, or quick stress management skills. 3. Hone hunger options Everyone knows when you're hard at work it can be easy to quickly grab a bite from what's at hand. Offer your employees healthy meal and snack options that help fuel their performance while also meeting their nutritional needs. For example, stock lunchrooms with fresh fruit baskets, and be sure the office cafeteria has plenty of healthy meal options. 4. Be mindful of stress Unmanaged stress has been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and sleep trouble. At the workplace, it can lead to inefficiency, job dissatisfaction, and absence from work for related health conditions. Encourage employees to take simple steps to reduce stress, like taking several breaks a day to go for a walk, or chat with a co-worker. 5. Qatar National Sports Day This year in February Qatar’s first National Sports Day took place. National Sports Day is a pioneer initiative adopted by HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent. A series of public events were lined up and has encouraged employees to engage enthusiastically in the sports activities. Make sure you take part next year as well!
1. Take a break Sitting or standing for long periods of time can cause pain and other adverse effects, and there can also be nutritional traps, such as vending machines, that could contribute to weight gain. So take a break during your work like a stroll outside (if the weather allows for it!) or go to the gym during your lunch break can help promote good and healthy workplace habits. 2. Watch your posture Certain ergonomic changes can really make a difference such as sitting close to the workstation, keeping monitors at eye level, and sitting with legs flexed at a 90-degree angle with feet resting comfortably on the floor. 3. Stretch your neck, back, and shoulders Sitting hunched over a computer can put a lot of strain on your neck and back. Try these exercises to stretch muscles and help improve your posture as well. 4. Plan ahead The workplace is often full of tasty temptations, such as vending machines and celebratory desserts. It is recommendable to pack and prepare your own meals. Keep healthy snacks on hand such as small bags of nuts or snack mix you make yourself, or a small bag of fruit like apples or grapes. 5. Keep hydrated The air-conditioning units in the office are constantly humming and therefore it is very important to keep yourself hydrated at all times. Keep a couple of bottles of water on your desk within easy reach. This will keep your energy and productivity levels up and your headaches down. •

Green Coffee Bean Extract The Magic Bean
by Gloria Duran-Renderos, Nutrition Consultant, B.SC, M.P.H.
It is being promoted as a powerful weight loss supplement in the United States. The question is, once a person loses weight, and continues to eat a high calorie high fat diet, will the weight stay off? Can we truly say it’s the newest revolutionary diet supplement of this decade?
C
ultivation of coffee began around 1,000 years AD in the area of Arabia. Roasting was not practised during those times and the green coffee beans were used to make a beverage similar to tea. This practice still goes on in some of the Arabian families and we can say that this was the traditional Arabic coffee until roasting was introduced. It was prepared daily at home and taken during the day. The drink was prepared with other spices to add more taste and hide the bitterness of the green coffee beans. Drinking or taking the green coffee bean extract does not make you feel nervous or jittery like a regular cup of coffee. Instead, its ingredient Chlorogenic Acid works to inhibit the uptake of glucose and increases the metabolic rate, burning more stored fat. The Chlorogenic Acid is lost in the process of roasting the coffee, losing therefore its beneficial health effects.
HOW MUCH TO DRINK TO AFFECT WEIGHT LOSS? Recommendations given in Dr. Oz TV show were that the dosage should be 800 mg twice a day. The extract is being sold as a dietary supplement in the United States in the form of capsules. The capsules should be taken 30 minutes before a meal.

1} Burn fats faster. Caffeic and Chlorogenic acids help release fatty acids from fat cells and burn off excess fat.
2} Improve metabolic rate. 3} Slow down aging. Chlorogenic acid and its powerful antioxidants properties destroy free radicals and allow the body to look younger and healthier. 4} No known side effects. However some people experience stomach or intestinal pain and should stop drinking it. At the present time, there is no scientific evidence that the extract could be a risk for people with cancer, HIV or chronic diseases. On the contrary, probably, in the case of diabetes, heart disease and obesity the Green Coffee Bean extract could be a beneficial aid in their daily diet. 5} It acts as an appetite suppressant. Joe Vinton, Chemist at the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, delegate and presenter of the research done with Green Coffee Bean Extract, states: “Taking the recommended dosage, following a low-fat healthy diet and exercising regularly could be a safe, effective and relatively inexpensive way to lose weight and keep it off.” Let us take advantage of this new scientific evidence. Perhaps the future generations will be able to learn from our lifelong dietary mistakes so let’s enjoy a healthier way to drink coffee. •

T hings to consider: Michael Thevenet, Director of Food & Beverage, Mövenpick Tower & Suites
Entertaining at home can be less stressful than you think if you follow these tips from Director of F&B, Mr. Michael Thevenet of Mövenpick Tower & Suites. According to him, inviting and entertaining people at home, can easily be a memorable experience for you and your guests!
1} Before creating the menu try to find out your guests’ food likes and dislikes.
2} Unless you are a very good cook, don’t make your food too complicated, play it simple. Your guests will appreciate that.
3} If you don’t like cooking at all, there are some very good catering companies who can organize the entire dinner for you.
4} If you don’t know your guests well enough, try to avoid the following food: Seafood, raw fish or meat, rabbit, snails, spicy food
5} For a balanced menu start with a light appetizer followed by meat or fish and finish off with cheese and dessert.
6} The appetizer could be a mixed salad with toppings like smoked fish or foie gras.
7} The main course could be a type of beef stew, veal blanquette or chicken curry that you could prepare in advance and that leaves you with more time for your guests.
8} For desserts make something cold for the same reasons as above.
9} Make sure to list down your menu with recipe and ingredients.
10} Do your shopping in advance. 11} Warm up the plates in a low warm oven and cool the desserts in the fridge.
Subin Dharman, Executive Assistant Manager, The Ritz-Carlton Doha
What if you’re not a great cook but still want to host a party away from home? Well, Mr. Subin Dharman, Executive Assistant Manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha tells us that everything starts with the invitation list because it will influence every decision made for the gathering. Then the rest follow:
Choose the right venue. A place that is easy to reach, with parking. Ensure your venue is well located. View your venue. Before booking any restaurant, visit it yourself. Check the overall physical condition, the cleanliness, the attire of the staff (most importantly the chef) and look at where your table will be: being close to each other is nice…but not too squeezed! You need the right atmosphere. Check the mood of the waiters, the profile of the clients, the music and lighting, as well as the entertainment … if you see happy people, then that’s great. Evaluate the food and the service. Choose a set menu. First check if your guests have any food restrictions, allergy, or preferences. Ensure the flexibility and expertise of the Chef by keeping a different option for someone. Ask for a print-out of the menu for your guests. But avoid asking too many changes. Vino. Get the restaurant Sommelier to pair your meal with your beverage. It can also be a fun exercise to join in! Negotiate the price but do not be impulsive. Be sure to visit multiple sites. It’s easier to find the best option this way. Dress code. You should inform your guests about the concept of the venue and give suggestions about the dress code - smart casual, formal, shorts. Digital Invite. Once you have these ready, think social and put it down on a digital invite. Express yourself and make sure you link the invite to their calendar. Pre-Drinks. Start off with a warm-up party in a lounge in or outside the restaurant. This will give you enough time to wait for all the guests to arrive and also break the ice if they are not familiar with each other. Simply know who prefers to seat next to whom, who needs to talk with whom and most importantly who doesn’t get along with whom! After a long dinner it is always refreshing to move to a lounge for coffee and desserts.

Monte Geoffroy Castle,
My first Stop was, located in the commune of Maze (Maine-et-Loire) a ‘U’ shaped castle that was built in 1676. It was burnt down and rebuilt later restoring two towers and its moat. The adjoining chapel sits to the right of the entrance all of which surprisingly survived the French revolution and the revolt in the Vendee. Descendants of the family still live in the castle today preserving its archives & furniture. Its large expanse of greenery meets you at the majestic front gates enabling you to take in the beauty of this jewel.

An enchanted land of vineyards, flowers and rolling green hills dotted with more than a thousand chateaux. It is perhaps the charm of its gentle pace life that has, for centuries, made it a sought-after location for poets and writers. Step back through the history of some of France’s finest works of art and visit these historic castles.
Chateau De Chambord
is the largest by far of all the Loire Chateaux, built on a scale foreshadowing that of the Palace of Versailles. So big apparently that the Loire River was diverted to make more space for its construction. Make sure you wear comfy shoes as this trip really pushes you to a test of endurance but it’s worthwhile! The castle was supposed to originally serve as a hunting lodge for King Francois. The castle has 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces and 84 staircases. The Castle has a 128 m façade and more than 800 sculpted columns with an elaborately decorated roof.

The palace is a mix of Gothic and renaissance architecture and is now less than a third of the size it was in the 16th century. Leonardo da Vinci lived nearby in Manor Clos-Luce as a guest of King Francis – just 10 minutes walking distance from the castle.
Chateau Cheverny
remains a top tourist destination to this day, renowned for its magnificent interiors and its collection of furniture, tapestries and objects d’art. A pack of some seventy dogs are also kept on the grounds and are taken out for hunts twice weekly. This is also the castle seen in the film Tin, Tin. A stone staircase dated in 1634 with trophies of arms and the arts lead to the grand apartments.

What’s A MAMMOGRAM By SHAHINAZ BEDRI M.D.
ABODE spoke to Dr. Shahinaz Bedri, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in Doha to explain what is a mammography.
M
ammography is a specialized x-ray that detects both benign and malignant lumps in the breast, and can help in preventing death from breast cancer. It has been around as both a screening and diagnostic tool since the 1960s.Screening for breast cancer is necessary for prevention and patient survival. Mammography provides a two dimensional image of the human breast that shows the smaller cancer forms that are undetectable to the human eye or during self-examination. This is why most healthcare providers recommend a woman gets a screening mammogram after the age of 40.
How are they read? Mammograms are read by expert mammographers who have many years of experience and trained to read these images. Baseline images and consequent images of screened breasts are always stored and compared at every screening visit. Some cancerous lesions detected by a mammogram screening at an early
stage only need removal and therefore disfiguring procedures such as a mastectomy (removal of the whole breast) are prevented. Sometimes, depending on the type of cancer, no further treatment is needed after removal of the malignant tumor. However, in most instances a woman will need to go through further testing and then chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal treatment, depending on the size and stage of the cancer that is detected. Sometimes when the breast is very dense or has too much of what we call fibroglandular tissue, other modes of examination are recommended, such as an ultrasound or breast MRI and more recently, 3D mammography. False results Sometimes, a screening mammogram may produce a false positive or false negative results, causing undue anxiety to some patients. This can be clarified by
further testing of the patient or a repeat mammogram. There is some controversy over whether women should be screened for breast cancer before the age of 40. A recent study from the Netherlands which looked into the screening of women below 40 with genetic predisposition to breast cancer found that the scan could in fact increase the risk of developing cancer, particularly if they had already been exposed to other forms of chest radiation such as a regular chest X-ray. A breast MRI may be the suitable choice for these women. Many benign lesions are detected by mammograms. Radiologists can take a biopsy of the lesion during mammography and send the tissue to the lab to identify if it is benign or malignant. Both procedures are mildly uncomfortable and can take place on an out of patient basis. The important message is that screening mammography helps to save women’s lives. Don’t hesitate, just do it. •
Regular screeningS are vital The World Health Organization (WHO) and American Cancer Society (ACS) recommend that women between the age of 40 and 70 get a mammogram every other year as a screening measure for breast cancer. They also recommend that women get a baseline screening mammogram at the age of forty if there is a significant history or a history of breast cancer in the woman’s family. Mammography screening can reduce the risk from death by 20-30% in women over 50 years of age in affluent countries, according to a report by the International Agency of Research in Cancer.

Mammograms
The Fear Behind The Test
By Marione Borela Lineses
We all know mammograms are important but most women fear them. Are they uncomfortable? Are they safe? Are they really necessary? Lynn Giroux shares her experience.
D
on’t be afraid to go for screening, because the earlier cancer is found, the better the chances of successful treatment. What are the early signs of breast cancer? Aside from lumps in the breast, other symptoms include pain, nipple discharge, thickening of skin on the breast, and changes in the size and shape of breast. These may also be signs of benign conditions, so it is best to consult your doctor right away. Why a mammogram is so important According to the National Cancer Institute, the best way of detecting breast cancer as early as possible is by getting a mammogram. For women with no signs of disease, a screening mammogram is used. This lowdose x-ray detects tumors that are not felt, and even tiny calcium deposits that may indicate the presence of breast cancer. If a lump or other symptom is detected, a diagnostic mammogram is used, which can take longer a screening mammogram. The mammogram is done one breast at a time by placing them between two plates and squeezing them flat. You should also have a clinical breast exam done by a health care provider on a regular basis. Screening mammograms have both benefits and limitations, because some cancers cannot be
TIP
According to the American Cancer Society, women in their 20's and 30's should have a clinical breast exam (CBE), done by a health professional every 3 years. And women at age 40 and above should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are healthy.
hospitals and clinics that offer mammogram testing in doha: • Hamad General Hospital • Elite Medical • Doha Clinic • Al Ahli • Al Emadi • Qatar Medical Centre • Gulf Laboratory and Xray • Al Arabi Xray and • medical lab detected by a screening mammogram but may be found by a clinical breast exam. How does it feel to have a mammogram? Lynn Giroux had a mammogram at Al Ahli Hospital as part of Woman Wellness Testing. “During the procedure, although I was nervous, the technician made me feel relaxed,” she says. “She kept apologizing if I experienced any pain which I didn’t. It probably helps that I have lost a lot of weight in the past few years so I have more skin than fatty tissue, so there’s not much left to squish.” What if the results aren’t good news?
“As it turned out my mammogram showed lumps which they could not just rule out as normal cysts or fatty tissue so I was scheduled to have bilateral breast ultrasound for further investigation”, says Lynn. “Again this showed abnormal masses and tissue so I was sent to see the surgeon right away in order for them to biopsy the area. To make a long story short, I was then scheduled for an ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy. In the end, all came out clear with the masses being inflamed lymph nodes, with no indication of malignancy,” Lynn tells us. Risks The American Cancer Society says risk factors for breast cancer include family history, race, genes and age. Some risk factors are, however, under our control, with lifestyle choices such as the recent use of birth control, not having children or having them later in life, alcohol, obesity and lack of exercise also contributing to developing breast cancer. So, don’t be afraid to take screening exams, with or without any symptoms, and remember early detection is vital. •

BREAST CANCER
BEYOND THE SHOCK by Gloria Duran-Renderos, Nutrition Consultant, B.SC, M.P.H.
Genetics and lifestyle are very important factors in the incidence and rising prevalence of breast cancer. Although it affects mostly women, men are also at risk of having the disease and early detection is essential for both sexes.
F
or most of us the word CANCER means death and pain. And after the diagnosis, few of us feel we can survive the experience. Breast cancer is emotionally devastating for women because it involves getting rid of a part of the body which affects their appearance, self-esteem. self help: Though genetics cannot be changed, there are things we can do to prevent this terrible disease and ease the pain. Being a nutritionist and a cancer survivor myself, I can say now that out of this experience came a new learning about myself and my diet. Beyond the shock of knowing that I had cancer I started to reflect on what to eat
“BElieve your inner voice and do what you think is an answer and the best way for you to deal with this disease. “ and what to do during this unexpected period of my life. I knew that along the timeline of treating the disease I had to do something that the medical team could not do or give me. I had to take charge and responsibility towards my own self. Yes, radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery were words and medical treatments to be done with specialists on the subject.
But the big question was: Were the other things I could do? there was much to do:
1} I searched for my inner strength and wisdom. 2} I believed in my inner voice and started doing what I found within and thought to be an answer. 3} I initiated change in my attitude, diet, and activities. Please read my personal tips for suggestions during recovery. THE ROAD TO PREVENTION: After my recovery, I slowly added solid food to my daily diet. I completely changed my eating habits? Twenty years have passed and I have continued with the following lifestyle:

Here are my tips DURING TREATMENT:
1) CHANGE OF ATTITUDE: I learned to speak loud in front of a mirror about my health, vitality and life. And I did not allow others to tell me horror stories about my disease.
2) CHANGE THE TEXTURE OF THE FOODS: I switched from solids to liquids and practised a Vegan Green Diet. I settled for fruits and vegetables plus bee pollen, royal jelly and chlorophyll. More importantly, I started to drink lots of water.
3) CHANGE OF ACTIVITIES: MOVE‌. DANCE ‌AND ENJOY. I enrolled in a dancing academy and learned to dance again. I knew I had to choose a truly enjoyable activity. I also indulged in funny movies to keep me laughing, and I learned to appreciate the beauty that surrounded me. In summary, I rode the journey with a positive mental attitude through faith, consuming healthy foods that are easily digested and absorbed, and with a change of personal activities. These were the foundation which helped rebuild my health.

Living Up To
100 Years
10 ways to live longer and healthier By Gloria Duran-Renderos, Nutrition Consultant, B.SC., M.P.H.
I have always believed that being old meant suffering from pain, stiffness, and sadness. With this notion, I wanted to pass away at 70. Now at 75, I realized that growing in years only meant more wisdom, more experience, and with the opportunity to watch other generations grow and mature. Now, my desire is to live up to a 100 years with zest, vitality and joy.

hen I was growing up the term “old person was applied to a 50-year-old man or woman. And that was because in the mid fifties, most people passed away around that age. Now with improved medications to treat diseases, higher food standards and better nutrition practices, the median age to live is up to 75-80 years. In the last 25 years, a rise in metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart attack and renal insufficiency have made us realize that being of old age should not mean having the burden of chronic illnesses, and that something perhaps could be done in the way we live to improve not only the lifespan but the quality of life. At present, the scientific community is foreseeing an increase in the lifespan again. If their evidence is correct, possibly, many of us will live up to 100 years. The question is, can someone in their fifties add 50 more years to his life? Or can someone in the seventies increase 30 more years to his life? And if so, how is it done? Now it’s time to change your mindset that being retired and old does not mean confinement in a room glued on TV while eating popcorn. Living longer means being sociable, loving life and the world you live in, learning to eat better and becoming active.

The breastfeeding of babies is the best and most natural way of feeding during the first months of their life. However, the sucking of the baby has impact on the skin of the breast often resulting in cracks of the tissue. This may even lead to infection.
Effective breast care for breastfeeding mothers Multi-Mam products prevent and treat discomforts before and during breastfeeding through total breast care. They are completely safe for mother and child. They are harmless when swallowed by the baby and do not have to be removed prior to breastfeeding. They are based entirely on natural ingredients and contain no preservatives. This allows the mother to breastfeed her baby without hesitation even if she has just applied Multi-Mam Balm or has used the MultiMam Compresses.
Multi-Mam Balm Multi-Mam Balm is based on a selection of vegetable oils that offer the metabolic precursors for the skin lipids such as the sterols and prostaglandins. A distinct feature of MultiMam Balm is the presence of Squalene, an essential component of the human sebum, in an effective percentage. Multi-Mam Balm is non-sticky and easily absorbed by the breast skin. It does not leave any taste or smell to the skin and is absolutely safe when swallowed by the baby. This is why it does not need to be removed prior to breastfeeding and thus offers its direct protection also during breastfeeding itself.
Multi-Mam Compresses Multi-Mam Compresses are a completely novel approach to the treatment of sore breasts. The application of an impregnated Compress helps maintain a moist environment. The Compress does not stick to skin, decreases the chance of bacterial infection, and is easy to use. Multi-Mam Compresses provide immediate relief of pain and swelling. Multi-Mam Compresses are non toxic and contain no preservatives. The bio-active gel has a pleasant sweet taste, contains only herbal ingredients and is totally safe when swallowed by the baby. •

Losing pounds
g n i t t i s e l i h w
By Allan Lloyd C. Martinez R.N. Diplomatic Club – Fitness Trainer photography Jessie Palanca
For a typical office worker, all in a day’s work will usually tons of paperwork, handling telephone calls, emails, and beating deadlines. You’re too busy that you can hardly get out of your seat. This kind of predicament makes it easy to put on weight. So the question is, is there an exercise that you can do where you can lose pounds. Well, my answer is yes. The key here is to burn at least 200-400 calories while sitting.
A
s a fitness professional, I try to find ways for my clients to keep themself active. Most of the office workers spend time sitting 6-8 hours per day. These contributes to being lethargic and having low energy because of poor blood circulation, and can be very stressful for the body especially the lower back. If you think that you can’t hit the gym do these 15-20 minutes exercises. You may do these exercises on your own seat before you start your work, during your breaks, or even before you go home.
Tools that you need All that you have to do is to sit on your chair, buy a resistance band (you may also use a 1.5 liter water bottle filled with water or sand for added resistance), and leg weights. Your rest interval should be 20-30 seconds only before you do your next set. Your tempo should be in a slow controlled movement. Do it in a full range of motion.
Dynamic and static stretching Make sure that you are seated properly in an upright position. Your back should be straight and supported by the backrest of the chair. This will prevent you from having lower back pain and hunched posture.

Arms & Back: Put your hands together and direct them upwards with your palms facing up. While on that position, slowly tilt laterally towards your left and slowly to your right. Hold it for 10 seconds.
Shoulders: Do dynamic stretching by slowly shrugging your shoulders forward in a circular motion and then in a backward motion for 10 pairs.
Wrist: To stop you from developing carpal tunnel syndrome from prolonged typing. Roll your wrist clockwise and counterclockwise 10 times. Chest: Do static stretching for your chest by interlocking your hands together and putting it behind your neck. Move it in a backward motion and hold it for 10 seconds.
it towards to your head. Holding it for 10 seconds.
Ankle: Do dynamic stretching for your ankle by circulating your ankle clockwise and counterclockwise. 10 pair each ankle. While doing exercises on your seat is helpful, it is still best to do exercises in a gym where you can do a lot more in a controlled environment.
Healthy Eating: For optimum results, incorporate a healthy diet including complex carbohydrates like spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, and sweet potato before workout. Eat lean meat such as tuna, salmon, chicken breast, turkey breast, and egg whites afterwards. Don’t forget to eat a variety of different fruit. Stay away from extra sweets, extra salt, and oily foods. Stay hydrated-drink a lot of water before, during and after exercises. •

Look Better than Ever
Tone your chest and arms with these effective exercises! By Jay Koodagoda Photography Jessie Palanca
Chest and arm exercises involve extending your arms to your sides and bringing them back to the middle of your chest. You can perform this exercise using dumbbells, resistance bands or your own body weight PUSH ups.
C
hest and arm exercise routines are very effective. The target muscles are the pectorals major and pectorals minor (the bulk muscle group and thin muscle group in the chest area, respectively), biceps and triceps with some benefits for the anterior deltoids or shoulders. For ladies, defined pec muscles add a more balanced and toned appearance to the torso and can help to lift the chest. You may experience some next-day soreness in the chest and arms after performing the exercises correctly, because the pectorals major don't have the same endurance as the smaller muscle groups, biceps and triceps. Doing 3 times a week for 6 to 8 weeks of this routine can achieve good results!

Push Ups Start with your knee on the floor and your feet up (facing the mat).Place your hands parallel with your shoulders and a bit wider than shoulder width apart on top of the platform. Without touching the platform, extend your arms, raising the chest up, until your arms come close to locking out. Lower until approximately 5 inches from the platform. Repeat 10 times. Keep the abdominal muscles engaged throughout the movement so the back does not arch. Do 10 - 12 repetitions.
Swedish Ball Dumbbell Fly Begin by sitting on the ball and hold 2 dumbbells in your hands with your head and upper back supported on the ball. Keep your feet facing forwards, firmly on the floor, and extend your arms towards the ceiling with your palms facing your each other. Inhale and slowly lower the dumbbells out to the side until they are about parallel with your body. Pause, exhale and then slowly return to the starting position. Do 10 - 12 repetitions.

Quantum Leap Into The Future
A vehicle with a spirit that belongs to the new generation By Deliah Furcoi Photography Jessie Palanca location musherib home and ritz carlton marina
She is a stunner and a knock out just to look at! I really couldn’t tell if it was me or her that was drawing so much attention on Doha’s busy streets. With her cherry red coat and whip cream finish, standing firm on 20-inch rims, I felt like a true DIVA! The all new Range Rover EVOQUE encapsulates contemporary luxurious design with capability reinvented. With unmatched dynamic sports handling!
P
leasantly surprised as I swung the driver’s door open I was invited to drive the Range Rover EVOQUE Dynamic, the top end of its range. The other models up for grabs differ in body styles, the coupe with the classic Range Rover good looks and the bold with three distinct derivatives
‘Pure, Prestige and the dynamic.’ With a huge grin and eager anticipation my ‘wild child’ in me jumped with excitement and pressed the start button. The EVOQUE came alive with a velvet purr under the hood and a circular knob appeared from the centre console which was the gear. Set in reverse I was guided by the drive assist with a visual of my surrounds to ensure unwarranted despair. As I maneuvered out of the parking and was well into the heart of the city I explored through most of the on-board facilities of navigation, radio, TV,IPOD, MP3, cell phone connectivity where I had time to catch up with some pending work commitments. I even had access to the vehicle diagnostics – oil pressure, airbag on, air bag off, axle tilt and realized she was not just beautiful but had the smarts too. I was anxious to stretch the EVOQUE’s legs and headed for the east of the country where I knew I would have some breathing space. It was the dead of the
afternoon when Doha goes into their midday slumber and it was just me and her on a long dusty road. With 2.0 litre Si4 petrol engine fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission I knew I was in good hands. Weighting only 1640 kgs the EVOQUE was responsive to my enthusiasm with amazing gear agility. Fully equipped with advanced MagnaRide TM (in short this means the vehicle is programmed to anticipate your every decision and road condition to ensure a smooth ride). An outstanding standstill to 60mph only takes 6.9 seconds, she is sensible with a bite in her gut. Over all the Range Rover EVOQUE is at the top of my Christmas wish list! Bold, uncompromising with a unique original attitude to a drive experience. I would be a proud owner of this car! •

Doha Mums
A vibrant community of mothers Words and Image MARIONE BORELA LINESES
If you’re a mum with a toddler or two, or pregnant and in search of a support group, look no further than Doha Mums.
D
oha Mums is by no means a new group. In fact, it now has 1200 members from 100 countries on board. So, when I overheard a dad scouting for any group activity that would cater for his wife and toddler who due to arrived in Qatar soon, I immediately suggested Doha Mums. The group has answers to pertinent pregnancy questions, playgroups, tot classes, nursery guides, all sorts of family events, and even fun yard sales. More importantly, the group helps people to meet new friends. I touched base with the brains behind the group, Roxanne Davis, a mother of two and former litigation consultant, and asked her why she decided to found Doha Mums. “I was part of a terrific mums group in Houston, Texas and when I moved here in 2008, I discovered that there was nothing to bring the mums together,” she says. “There were scattered playgroups and coffees but the unifying factor wasn’t there. I started hosting playgroups at my house, followed by coffees in the shopping malls. It grew little at first, and then started growing by leaps and bounds,” she explains. Every month various events fill the group’s calendar, making it possible for a mum to choose her activities depending on her area and schedule. “There’s a different crowd at each event - so you always meet someone new or finally put a name to a face”, says Davis. “The cultural diversity
Baking, crafting and many more activities to do with Doha Mums. within the group is astounding.” As well as being a community of mothers dedicated to helping each other, the group also reaches out to others in Qatar’s wider society. “Members have taken it upon themselves to organize fundraisers and awareness campaigns for things like QAWS (Qatar Animal Welfare Society) and Breast Cancer as well,” Davis says. For mums who feel the need to de-clutter and sell their unwanted and pre-loved items, Davis has initiated a Classifieds section. “Our classifieds are worth their weight in gold because the mums can buy and sell everything from autos to toys without worry that random people will be calling,” she tells me. On top of the regular playgroups, the little ones get to don costumes at members-
only special events like the Halloween Party, the Winter Carnival and the Spring Fling. What’s more, Doha Mums works closely with many hotels to host classes for adults and kids such as pumpkin carving, cookie decorating, Thai cooking and more. Aware of the challenges of relocating to new to a place, Davis dishes out this piece of advice: “Get out and meet people immediately. Getting moved in and getting organized can wait,” she says. “For mums, the school and nursery situation can be very challenging. There simply are not enough spaces. Meet those in charge and remain friendly at all times. The gatekeepers are often the most important people to know.” •
For further info check out www.dohamums.com. There’s bound to be an event for you, mum of Doha!

This month ABODE recommends these great books. Grab your coffee and find a nice spot to enjoy a pleasant read!
The Dukan Diet 100 Eat as Much as You Want Food
Who Moved My Cheese? Dr. Spencer Johnson This is a powerful business book that will help the reader to move from his comfort zone and learn to deal with change as there’s no absolute shelter from it. The characters Hem, Haw, Sniff and Scurry depict different traits that the modern man might possess. Reading the story will leave you thinking to get out of your sphere of security or rather stay to qualm about what should stay and not. (43 QR)
Pierre Dukan “Hungry people don’t lose weight.” When you want to lose weight you are always told to eat less and exercise more! That is the cardinal rule in this endemic. Yet Pierre Dukan defies the odd and told his readers to eat more and still lose weight, maybe this is a hoax but many women tried and look fabulously skinny and healthy. Join them and grab your copy! (108 QR)

1. Stereokiller has even more punk/hardcore/metal goodness for you. According to the guy that runs the site, it's "better than damn MySpace." Well, no argument there. 2. mp3.com has a pretty huge collection of free tunes as well, with offerings from almost 1,400 artists. Most can be both streamed and downloaded. 3. MTV offers a new group of about a dozen downloads on a somewhat regular basis. A drop in the bucket, but still free. 4. Fuzz offers - oh crap - a mixtape feature. The interface is cool, and there's a ton of great, free music to discover on the site. 5. Purevolume.com is loaded with streaming music, but there are plenty of downloads as well. Click the search link, then search or browse to "discover new music." It's the quickest way to the freebies. Source:www.aimersoft.com
