Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bilal

HARRY RAMSDEN’S Fish&Chips in Qatar Profile Photography by Jessie Palanca Food Photography courtesy of Harry Ramsden's World Famous Fish and Chips

Mr. Bilal is a very successful self-made businessman in Qatar. He started working in the oil & gas sector and after serving numerous years for Shell retired from the industry in 1985. He then started his private investments in real estate, building a consistent number of successful projects in the years following.

A

meticulous man who remains involved at each stage of his projects, he has moved his interest into other investments. In October he will open HARRY RAMSDEN’S Fish & Chips, a new restaurant here in Qatar.

ABODE magazine is proud to feature an interview with him. ABODE: Mr Bilal: How are you today? Mr Bilal: I am fit and very happy to announce the opening of the Harry Ramsden chain of fish & chips in Qatar. We are all excited to have our first Harry Ramsden’s Fish & Chips branch in Doha. A: Tell us more about your idea and about why you decided to

6

open the chain in Qatar. Mr. Bilal: I decided to develop this concept in Qatar because nobody had done it before. I thought this was an interesting opportunity since there was a gap in the market. Being a businessman I decided to approach the chain and discuss a future collaboration with them. The result could benefit both parties, and here we are at the new opening in Doha. A: Who is Harry Ramsden's F&C? Mr. Bilal: The Harry Ramsen's F&C is one of the biggest chains of restaurants in the UK serving more than ordinary fish & chips. It has established a unique culinary experience using the best ingredients raising the

standards of street food to another level. A: Is the Doha branch the first one outside the UK? Mr. Bilal: This is the first one overseas, and we are very proud to be the first in Qatar. Since the large number of British expats living here we are confident that this will make them feel less far away from home. A: What will Harry Ramsden's off to it's public? Mr. Bilal: I tryed to create an atmosphere using high standards interiors witch differ slightly from the UK branches since i had to take in consideration future competition and the demanding clientele in Qatar. A: What can you tell us about the menu? Mr. Bilal: I am proud to say that all the fish comes from the North Atlantic Ocean; we will be serving cod. All the foods will be imported directly from the UK, making this new branch outside of the UK in line with the original tastes that you would experience in London. A: What kind of service are people going to expect? Mr. Bilal: The F&B manager Louise has been under going training at the main branch in London, gaining awareness and loyalty to the brand identity in order to be able to offer the same service here in Qatar.

A: What are Harry Ramsden’s plans for the future? Do you believe that the multicultural population of Qatar will fall in love with the concept? Mr. Bilal: I am very confident that the multicultural population of Qatar will be delighted to experience H.R. fish and chips. After all UK is a top destination for Qataris. A: Shall we expect a boom of the F&C trend in Qatar, in the following years? Mr. Bilal: As per our market research we are aware there will be a growing demand for fish & chips in a family-oriented place. We have high expectations for the brand to expand. A: Will you be opening other outlets around Qatar? Mr. Bilal: At present, I cannot give you a number but we will monitor the development of this one outlet and plan to discuss in the near future the opportunity for new openings. A: How can you describe your first experience eating Harry Ramsden's F&C? Mr. Bilal: I am very fond of fish and I may say it was excellent and you should try it! I love spending time with my family and we love to dine together, Harry Ramsden's is a new venue in a comfortable setting at the Pearl of Qatar that you may enjoy with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you there.

SERPENTI: THE TIMELESS ICON OF EXTRAORDINARY GLAMOUR Bulgari was founded in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari, a man of Greek heritage who lived in Rome. These two great artistic cultures influenced Bulgari’s design, though the iconic snake-themed Serpenti collection perhaps benefited most from his mixed influences. The Serpenti jewels are messengers for Bulgari’s classical heritage. compiled by Marisela Paesano

C

oiled tightly around the history of humanity, the serpent is a powerful symbol dating to ancient Greco-Roman mythology. Representing wisdom and seduction, the snake has transcended more than two thousand years of history and become a beautiful motif of eternal renewal. No leader of the ancient world is more closely associated with the snake than Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, who in 46 BC entered Rome wearing her royal diadem in the shape of a cobra. In 1963, the actress Elizabeth Taylor wore Bulgari serpent jewellery on and off-camera while leading the epic Cleopatra movie; "Serpenti" became one of the actress’s favourite Bulgari collections. Since the first "Serpenti" jewellery-watches in the 1940s, the snake has become a signature motif for Bulgari, recognized around the world. In homage to its rich past, Bulgari

10

reinterprets it in a new collection of high jewellery, accessories, bags, and timepieces.

GLAMOUR AND MYTHOLOGY

The snake has been a potent symbol since ancient Egypt, said to guarantee protection and power to those who wear it. In ancient Rome, its form as accessory was essential to the Roman fashion victim circa first century AD.

With the film La Dolce Vita in the 1960s came a breathe of modern, playful and youthful hedonism that swept the world, from music to fashion, through beauty to jewels. In the mid1960s, Bulgari added a little more color into the Serpenti designs by using enamel, which introduced a livelier yet still dignified touch to the impressive reptiles. Colour was something Bulgari

loved anyway, and using enamel enhanced the one-of-akind nature of the pieces. In the 1980’s, Bulgari focused its jeweller's palette as well as it's most advanced techniques on the form, infusing the Serpenti jewels with the signature qualities of the brand : remarkable technical exploits, surprising combinations of materials, a passion for colour, and wearability. It is an icon which also appears on all Bulgari creations: watches, bags, scarves, sunglasses and leather bracelets. In the early 21st century the snake represents a return to magic and mythical symbolism. Bulgari made the snake bracelets longer so they would coil around the arm several times. And the popularity of the bracelets and watches led to an extension of the collection – including gemstone serpent rings symbolizing everlasting love, winding around the finger to form an endless circle. Bulgari did a great job of keeping its creations modern so as to appeal to a contemporary audience, with many celebrities continuing to wear the jewelry and regular appearances in pop culture.

BVLGARI’S ULTIMATE EXPRESSION

Captivating, the Serpenti Tubogas has become an icon of Bulgari’s design as well as a stylistic symbol of innovation. Serpenti Tubogas merges two of the most iconic symbols: the power and sinuosity of the snake and the contemporary soul and the style of the tubogas. The new collection uses the tubogas technique – flexible, tubular litheness produced entirely without soldering. As it encircles the neck with seduction, the 2015 Serpenti Tubogas necklace reigns over the collection. Bulgari accentuates the pink-gold serpent with

3.2-carats of pavé diamonds on its head and tail. A pair of pink-gold earrings, set with 1.55-carats of diamond scales completes the jewellery set. The elegant body of the Serpenti Scales jewel is composed of a series of elements that recalls the skin of an exotic snake. The beautiful, bold design simulates the creature’s scales. The collection is composed of a necklace, a double coiled bracelet and a pair of earrings characterized by the use of pink gold and a pattern that alternates between mother-of-pearl and pavé diamonds. Each component is the result of extraordinary workmanship.

Oscar de la Renta Fashion cannot forget the loss of this amazing designer. One year after his death we remember and pay homage to a one-of-a-kind man. After a life ruled by passion and devotion to both fashion and charity, Oscar de la Renta will long remain an inspiration for future generations.

By Daniela Annunziata

B

orn in 1932, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he left at the age of 19 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. While in Spain, he discovered the world of fashion design. His talent opened doors for him, and he landed an apprenticeship as a fashion illustrator with Spain's most renowned couturier, Cristobal Balenciaga. In 1961, while on vacation in Paris, he was hired as an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin-Castillo. Within two years, he had moved to New York and joined the American design house of Elizabeth Arden designing a couture collection. Firm in his footing, he began his own signature ready-to-wear label in 1965. His line—identified by its delicate silk prints, use of ruffles, soft silhouettes and a vibrant palette—soon became synonymous with casual luxury. Women of means couldn’t get enough of his distinctly modern yet romantic looks, and for those who couldn’t afford his gowns, he offered a scent; his first perfume debuted in 1977. Oscar de la Renta "It’s not about what you wear, but about how you live your life" Respected by his contemporaries, de la Renta served as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1973 to 1976, and from 1986 to 1988. He suffered a great personal tragedy in 1983 Françoise, his wife of 16 years and former editorin-chief of French Vogue, died of bone cancer. Shortly after her death, he adopted his son from an orphanage in his native country. Both events touched his life deeply, and when de la Renta wasn’t working on his next collection, he was making sure his money could also help people in need - a passion he shared with his second wife, Annette de la Renta, whom he married in 1990. “Sisters Of Style” By Laura Prior

20

Fall Collection 2015 by The Kayys

Gather round as we tell the captivating tale of three sisters who chose a life of style, a story as romantic as the elegant, embellished clothing that they create. Hend, Ghada, and Maha Al Subaey grew up fascinated by fashion and design. In a medley of collaboration and creativity they went on to form their fashion brand, The Kayys, in 2011. ABODE had the pleasure of hearing their unique story first hand to bring you this month’s Fashion Insider!

N

ow an internationally renowned brand with a rapidly growing fan-base both at home and abroad, The Kayys has carved out a unique reputation that Qatar can be extremely proud of. The label started strong and has not let up. With a string of accolades and awards it’s clear that the sisters have a gift for design and for knowing instinctively what works in one of the toughest industries in the world. It only seems to be making them stronger!

ABODE: It’s great that you are three sisters working together. What inspired you to do this? The Kayys: Our passion for style and fashion from such a young age spurred us to create our own beautiful designs. Our aim from day one was to ensure that each and every piece we make is effortlessly elegant, feminine and beautiful. Growing up we always loved clothes, styling and of course shopping! Fashion really brought us closer so we decided to follow our mutual dream of starting our own clothing label. A: How does the dynamic between the three sisters work? TK: Each one of us is different. One is loud and edgy, the other is calm and minimalistic and the third one is in between. We balance each other out!

A: What are the best bits and the challenges about working with family? TK: We love working together and inspiring each other daily to create the most trendsetting and innovative pieces possible. No one ever believes us but we rarely argue! We also work on each and every single piece of clothing together, sharing our input and coming to a compromise on all of our ideas. This is what we believe makes our designs so unique and special. If we had to name a challenge it would be when we first started The Kayys. Finding our identity was tricky because each one of us has their own different taste. A: You have gained excellent recognition in such a short timeframe. What do you put that down to? TK: I would say our strong dedication to the designs, our solid vision and consistency. We also recognize that positive PR and constant social media engagement is what has kept our customers close to the brand and to us. A: What is your favourite part about what you do? TK: Seeing our visions come to life.

Fall Collection 2015 by The Kayys

We love working together and “ inspiring each other daily to create the most trendsetting and innovative pieces possible. No one ever believes us but we rarely argue!

THE KAYYS

A: Three is the magic number, so sum up The Kayys in three words. TK: Feminine, embellishment, elegant! A: What would you say is your greatest achievement to date? TK: Winning the Young Designer Arab Woman Award was a defining moment for us. It proved to us that we were on the right track and that people appreciated what we were doing. It was very motivating for us. A: Describe the brand’s aesthetic and tell us how it has evolved? TK: We like our pieces to be very elegant and wearable so our colour palette is muted. Our specialty is hand-sewn embellishments, which add a feminine touch. We use particular materials that are light and floaty. They look so beautiful on any woman and are very flattering. The lightness of the fabric also makes them ideal for the summer months. We love to maintain the consistency in our brand and are mindful so that our customers can spot a The Kayys piece from the rack without any doubt.

A: If you were not fashion designers, what would you be? TK: Who knows? Probably jewelry designers! A: Name one essential piece every woman should have in her wardrobe TK: A hand-embroidered kaftan. A: What is your opinion of the Qatar fashion scene? How do you see it in years to come? TK: It is an exciting time to be in fashion in Qatar, as people are definitely starting to take their style and outfits a lot more seriously. There is no doubt that street-style is changing, people are becoming more bold and daring! A: What is your advice for any young, aspiring designers? TK: Follow your dreams and stick to your passion, it will get you everywhere.

A: If you could dress one person, who would it be? TK: Definitely Monica Bellucci.

A: What is next for The Kayys? TK: We are currently working on a complimentary jewelry line for the collections.

A: From where do you draw inspiration? TK: Our latest Autumn/Winter collection was inspired by the iconic 1970’s style of Bianca Jagger.

“Blogging Bliss” By Laura Prior Photography by Jessie Palanca Location Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel

Funky, feminine and fun loving would be a sterling place to start when summing up this month’s blogger, Chiara Amodeo. Born in Italy, the influences from this iconic fashion hub are etched in her DNA. When Chiara moved to Qatar in 2013, she put that passion for fashion into action and her blog ‘Bonjour Chiara’ was born.

S

mart and astute, Chiara studied law in university but could not ignore the reverberations of her home country’s style scene. It was only a matter of time before she realized the courtroom was not for her and she found her calling in blogging - and along her bliss along with it. Luckily for us, she throws that bliss around like fairy dust through colourful and quirky posts, and in the High Court of fashion we have absolutely no objection!

Chiara is wearing Rochas

ABODE: What got you into blogging? CA: I have always loved fashion and I am inspired by Europe, particularly Italy and France. I had aspirations to write a blog for a long time but I didn’t start until I moved from Italy to Doha. I had a lot of free time and wanted to keep myself busy, so I created my blog ‘Bonjour Chiara’.

A: Tell us about your blogging journey so far and how you’ve built up your online presence CA: I knew since the moment I started that if I worked hard it could flourish into something really interesting. So that is what I did. I put a lot of effort into bringing my readers high quality content and original layouts. I work on my blog at least 10 hours every day, which is a lot, but I genuinely love to do it!

A: How does the Italian blogging scene compare to the Qatari one? CA: The two scenes are totally different. I consider myself fortunate because in Qatar there aren’t as many bloggers as there are in Italy. There the competition is insane! There is also a high risk of being copied in Italy but this is less so in Qatar. On the other hand, here there are a few more “do’s and don’ts” to follow, but nothing that can limit your blog. The mix of cultures that I found here is incredible. It has opened my mind a lot!

A: As an expat how have you been received on the local blogosphere? CA: I blog about my passion for fashion, beauty and all the little things that I love. Local women are so into these topics that they enjoy reading my blog and the feedback is positive. Also, thanks to Bonjour Chiara,

24

I have met lot of new people and fellow bloggers, some of whom have become great friends. So all in all, the local scene gave me the warmest welcome that I could have ever wished for!

A: What topics on your blog tend to get the most reaction? CA: The outfit posts are really popular, as well as my beauty reviews. But what always outshine the rest are the "Mrs. B.'s" posts. Mrs B. is a graphic doll that I introduced into my blog a few months after I started. I like to call her my assistant but sometimes I have the feeling that she is even more popular than I am!

A: What makes you unique as a blogger? CA: My content. I really pay attention to the graphic look of the blog. It has to be original. And of course Mrs B. and her fashionable life makes Bonjour Chiara a very unique blog.

A: The art of blogging is still somewhat ambiguous. Could you sum up what you do in your own words? CA: Blogging is still an underestimated activity but the reality is that it’s a hard job if you want to do it professionally. At the moment I do it all by myself and that means everything from searching new trends for my articles, creating Mrs B.’s posts, styling and editing thousands of pictures to share on the website and on social media pages, to name a few. The content has to be updated and of course I always schedule time to engage with my followers, something that I love to do.

A: High street or designer? CA: Both! Of course, if I could afford to I would buy more designer

items because there are designers out there who are incredibly creative. With designer you can see a special touch and notice the difference. At the same time, however, I truly believe that some prices are not justified and you pay more for the brand name that for the item itself. So high street wins there but I could never choose one or other. Mixing both is always the winning choice.

A: What are your favourite blogs (or bloggers) and why? CA: In general I love French bloggers. ‘The Cherry Blossom Girl’ or ‘Le Dressing De Leloo’ are two that really stand out. I also follow the American blog ‘Gal Meet Glam’. All these blogs are pretty and feminine in their own, and have fabulous pictures.

A: Where will Bonjour Chiara be in ten years from now? CA: My blog is constantly growing and my wish is to become bigger and bigger so that new opportunities will come, as well as new challenges too! I hope I’ll still have fun blogging, but at the same time I hope to be working with a team of people who share the same vision and passion for fashion. I have to pay attention to Mrs B though; she is more ambitious than me! She is the little doll who wants to conquer the world!

Monica Bellucci THE BOND WOMAN OF spectre

BY JAN JANSSEN, viva press

R

OME - Monica Bellucci has long been regarded as one of the world's most beautiful women. That assessment remains very much in force today even at an age - 50 - that still carries an irrational stigma for actresses and women in general. But Bellucci is living proof that beauty is ageless as she becomes the oldest Bond girl in the history of the film franchise with her role in SPECTRE, the new James Bond movie that marks Daniel Craig's fourth appearance as 007 and which opens in theatres this November. Bellucci is not only proud of being a "Bond woman," as she puts it, but also of her new life as a single mother of two following her 2012 separation from actor husband Vincent Cassell. She believes that women should take charge of their sensuality and that

36

being desirable is much more a function of one's sense of self than pure physical attractiveness. "There is too much emphasis on the physical aspect of beauty and attraction when it comes to women," Bellucci says. "I feel full of energy and excitement at this point in my life. I don't think about my age as changing anything about how I should feel about myself. This is such a good time for me and I feel a great curiosity to discover new things about myself and life in general." In addition to Spectre, Bellucci has also completed work on a very different film - On the Milky Road - a complex love story amid the blood and carnage of WWII directed by acclaimed Serbian auteur Emir Kusturica. Over the course of her career, Bellucci has worked on both sides of the Atlantic, appearing in major Hollywood films including the Oscar-nominated Malena, Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ (as Mary Magdalena), Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm, as well as The Matrix sequels. In France, her home since the 1990s, she has starred in The Apartment (her first film in French), and Secret Agents (all of which also co-starred her former husband, french actor Vincent Cassel). Monica Bellucci lives in Paris together with her two daughters from Cassel, Deva, 10, and Leonie, 5. She is now divorced from Cassell after a 14-year marriage, she is currently "happily single." THE INTERVIEW Q: Monica, does it bother you that so much fuss is attached to your having turned 50? BELLUCCI: I don't really care...I've never approached aging as a traumatic experience. It's beautiful to be 50 and having been able to appreciate so many different moments and gain so much more awareness of yourself and the world around you. I think we should celebrate that and draw inspiration from that. A woman can reflect so much beauty that way. Q: Does playing in a Bond film in some sense confirm that 50 does not mean that a woman can no longer be seen as attractive? BELLUCCI: I think it's a sign that women deserve to be respected and considered beautiful at any age. Sensuality and sexiness does not just belong to women in their twenties or thirties. In the film business, there has often been this prejudice against older women, the same way that in our society older women tend to be overlooked. Women need to believe in themselves and understand that they can still project sensuality and beauty as they get older. We shouldn't be made to feel as if we are no longer interesting or sexy at 50 as compared to when we're 30.

37

interview your way as a serious actress? BELLUCCI: It was something that I had to confront even before I started my acting career. When I was writing my final exams in Italy, my Greek professor was my examiner and he asked me very condescendingly: "When you become an adult, what are you going to do with your life - are you going to be an actress or a TV presenter?" It was his way of trying to humiliate me by suggesting that I had no business studying because of my looks. From his way of thinking, an actress didn't need to do study or take her education seriously. Of course, the great irony is that I did become an actress!

Q: You've lived your life as the object of intense scrutiny and admiration as one of the most beautiful women in the world. Is that a difficult burden? BELLUCCI: Beauty is a gift that is given you. But you shouldn't feel too proud because you did nothing to achieve it. It's simply something that is part of who you are but not who you really are on the inside. Beauty can also be a double-edged sword because there is so much pressure to maintain the image that the public has of you from when you were younger. But I have long ago accepted that getting older is a part of life and I am not worrying about trying to maintain an illusion. One day you're seen as the most beautiful woman in the world and the next day there's another woman who is given that kind of attention. It's not real. Q: You have a natural sense of calm and confidence. Where does that come from? BELLUCCI: I take after my father a lot. He wanted me to be independent and to think for myself. My parents were very permissive and wanted me to be able to lead an interesting life. You can't really ask for any better support than that. I gave me a sense of freedom and desire to explore life.

“

Beauty can also be a doubleedged sword because there is so much pressure to maintain the image that the public has of you from when you were younger

Q: Aside from your work in Spectre, you've also shot On the Milky Road with Emir Kusturica. What was that experience like? BELLUCCI: The film is a love story set in wartime and shot in the wilderness. The story is divided into three chapters and Emir is also the main actor. For me it remains one of my greatest experiences ever in my acting career. Kusturica is a complete artist: Director, writer, musician, producer, but most of all he is an amazing human being. Q: You left Italy to work in France. Was that an important decision in your life? BELLUCCI: One of things I have loved over the course of my acting career is that I am able to explore different cultures. That's why I was interested in working in France where they make 350 films a year as compared to 50 films a year in Italy. So it has always been a great pleasure for me to work with American, Italian, French and with Iranian and now a Serbian director. Q: How difficult was it to overcome all the obsessive attention to your beauty when you were trying to make

38

Q: Was acting always your dream? BELLUCCI: I had wanted to be an actress since childhood and I'm very proud that I have made a good life with the career that I chose for myself. Acting was my salvation. It rescued me from being a fulltime model which was very unfulfilling. It took me time before I could prove myself as an actress but once I did made some good films it was much easier for me to find good roles that appealed to me.

Q: What would your reaction be if your daughters wanted to become actresses? BELLUCCI: I would be happy and so would their father. But one thing I would be very against is if she wanted to become a model. I don't want my daughters to be part of that world. Anything else.

Q: What are the challenges of being single at this point in your life? BELLUCCI: It's one of the most interesting and revealing chapters in my life....It's a situation that I've never really experienced before. I always went directly from one relationship to another and then I was married for 14 years. And when my marriage ended, it wasn't because I met someone else, it was because our marriage had run its course. But since then I have found a new sensation of vitality and energy that I have never experience before. Q: Is it destablising or even frightening in some way when you come out of a long marriage and find yourself without a partner in life? BELLUCCI: Being single does not mean being alone, of course. You have the freedom to have a relationship or not. Yes, there is some fear at times, but it's also very stimulating and exciting, too! This is a very special time for me.

The Gold

Fragrance Collection Michael Kors announces the next chapter of the Michael Kors Collection fragrances: The Gold Collection. Each of the three individual scents was designed to reflect the opulence and luxury of the highly-prized metal—from white, to rose, to 24K gold. is nothing “There like a woman with a beautiful glow after an amazing vacation— and nothing complements that glow better than shimmering gold jewelry and a hint of fragrance that feels just as opulent and glamorous.

A

BODE: What inspired the Michael Kors Gold Collection? What does Gold represent to you? MICHAEL KORS: I’ve always loved gold— to me, there’s nothing more glamorous and opulent than the shimmer of gold, especially on sun-kissed skin. A luxe fragrance is the finishing touch for any girl.

A: Why is Gold the next Michael Kors fragrance chapter? How do the Gold fragrances relate to your beauty philosophy? MK: I always think of fragrance as the final detail. You wouldn’t put on an amazing gown and then just walk out the door for the night. There’s still that checklist: the makeup, the hair, the jewelry, the shoes. I think for every chic woman, fragrance is a part of that package. It is what makes a glamorous outfit complete, and sometimes it’s one of the first things

50

Michael Kors

someone notices about you and it may be the last thing they remember. A: Are there any iconic style moments inspired by gold that stick with you? MK: There are so many fabulous gold moments in classic Hollywood movies. There was Katharine Hepburn in the gold lamé gown in Bringing up Baby—the one that rips. I love Katharine Hepburn and that scene makes me laugh every time. Grace Kelly literally glowed in a gold gown in To Catch a Thief. And of course, there was the pleated gold lamé dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. And last but most opulently, there was Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. A: You chose three metallic fragrances for this collection: 24K Brilliant Gold, White Luminous Gold and Rose Radiant Gold. What attitude are these fragrances each meant to represent? Are they for different women or different moments?

MK: The idea behind the fragrances is more about individual preferences—your mood, your taste, your plans for the day or night. Sometimes a woman wakes up and she’s feeling powerful and she puts on white gold. Other times she wants to be a little more romantic so she slips on rose gold. Or she wants to be completely glamorous so she wears yellow gold. And then there are women who only wear one metal or the other. I think when you smell all three fragrances you’ll find the one, or two, or three that work for you. A: You have evoked a ‘Gold Lifestyle’ through this collection. Besides fragrance, what is vital to living the Michael Kors Gold life? MK: A healthy glow—everyone loves the promise of escape.

The Gold Fragrance Collection will be available at Sephora this month.

THE BEAUTY LIFT

A LIFTED & TONED FACE, IMMEDIATE RADIANCE Introducing a new revolutionary anti-aging beauty massage technique: Guerlain’s ‘Beauty Lift.’ The ‘Beauty Lift’ massage focuses on every face muscle to specifically target wrinkles, smoothening lines and activating microcirculation. Discover this instant youth boost and restore radiance as well as lift to your face.

By Marisela Paesano

This month I visited the beautiful Guerlain Spa, Alfardan nestled in The Alfardan Towers at the heart of Doha's city centre. The only Guerlain Spa, in the Middle East, it's the perfect union of effective know- how and aesthetic expertise. Offering its clients serious luxury, the spa provides an indulgent experience not to be missed. They've added a fantastic new treatment to their menu, The Beauty Lift Massage, so I was super-excited to find out more. The Beauty Lift Massage The Beauty Lift incorporates an anti-aging beauty massage intense stretching technique that focuses on each facial muscle, providing muscle stimulation that targets wrinkles, increases microcirculation and restore volume to areas where it has been lost. Sound dreamy? Well, I can report that it certainly was. Upon my arrival I was greeted by the friendliest staff and got settled into a comfy robe. As with all treatments at the Guerlain Spa, you start with a soothing footbath that is perfect for really bringing your focus to the treatment itself, enabling you to relax into it. It also gives the therapist time to explain what to expect and answer any questions that you might have. The massage itself was absolutely beautiful and made an incredible impact, firm in places so as to work the muscles hard, but not leaving you sore. It takes real skill on the part of

52

the therapist to apply pressure in the right places to accentuate the facial contours and work away lines. While a mask works on your skin, you're treated to a beautiful arm, shoulder and head massage which is then followed by a delightfully cooling application of massage balls. The Beauty Lift's targeted movements really stretch and relax the face in its most tense areas, and it was incredibly soothing. Over the course of an hour, the transformation was immediate: my skin was more beautiful, brighter and firmer. My face was noticeably more plump and bright, and the effect which lasted long after the treatment. If you suffer from particularly saggy skin in any area, I can imagine how much more firm your skin would feel following this facial workout. I was on a cloud following The Beauty Lift. It really was a dream to spend the afternoon this way. The latest hair colours and styles for Fall/ Winter 2015-16 are inspired by celebrities from around the world. Get your pens, ladies, and let’s start revamping our looks.

Hairstylist Eric Pascual of Franck Provost

Short hair: The pixie cut is definitely first row for short hair, as it provides a more trendy look for this length. A dramatic, more defined and funky look can be obtained with a touch of highlights with colours from natural and soft to the lightest ash tone.

Medium Hair: An angled bob is still where it's at 'coz it gives a sophisticated and elegant look. Colourwise, the touch of a warm base colour enhanced with soft beige , copper to red highlights gives hair more movement and a fabulous look. Balayage technique is one of my favourite for this hair length...

Long Hair: Layers are a good fits for this length with a skimming fringe. The best colour trend here is “ombre” highlights. This year ombre is one of the hottest hair colour trends - you can see this style everywhere now! Go BOLD,SOFT,COLOURFUL, or NATURAL with endless colour choice. Don't be afraid to go daring with your dip dye, as it's a great way to have a low maintenance hair that doesn't sacrifice style.

Beauty Q&A Answers to the everyday beauty questions you've always wanted to ask. By Lydia Khybenyk, Makeup Artist

Yellow skin tone, pink blush or a wrinkly eye: whatever your issue may be, ABODE's got an answer. We asked our favourite makeup artist Lydia to shed some light.

From Ching Lee

have a "yellowish" Q.Icomplexion. How

can I match my makeup to my skin tone?

From Tina

Q.Can you

recommend a lipstick that won't leave a stain on my lips?

A.

Try using a lip primer (Too Faced, NYX and M.A.C. are among the many brands that carry this product). Not only will it prevent a more permanent stain, but it will also ensure a smoother application and longer wear while on your lips.

56

A.

Choose makeup with warm undertones. The best eyeshadow colours would be brown, beige, warm nude, golden, bronze or warm nude. Same goes for lipstick: warm undertones of red, brown, nude, beige, coral, rose.

From grace

can I make Q.How my eyes "pop" without using an eyeliner?

A.

Use a highlighter in the inner corner of the eye and under the eyebrow. You can also try "tightlining" lining the upper lid waterline. It’s a great way to make eyes pop without giving a look of eyeliner.

From Ameena

mom’s eyelids Q.My are wrinkled. How can I help her minimize it using makeup?

You could try using a tightening eye-cream treatment or a fineline filling face primer such as Benefit Porefessional.

A.

There are a great number of options. You should consider pink/rose colours with warm undertones. Try Make Up For Ever's 310 Rosewood, 320 English Rose or M.A.C. Fever and M.A.C. Desert Rose.

breast cancer Awareness Campaign October 2015 Early detection of breast cancer saves lives PHCC’s ‘Screen for Life’ campaign highlights breast cancer screening’s impact on the whole family

A

s reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women – both in developed and developing countries. WHO has also identified a clear connection between early detection and morbidity rates and has therefore named breast cancer screening as a major goal in public health initiatives. Nations across many continents have instituted national breast cancer screening programs in accordance with that goal. Since early detection greatly increases the chance of survival, the aim of a screening program is to increase awareness both of the disease and of the benefits of early detection.

Breast cancer screening: a PHCC priority

To promote education, awareness and early detection of breast cancer in Qatar, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has announced the launch of a life-saving, population-based breast cancer screening campaign dubbed ‘Screen For Life.’ The campaign is an integral component of the Breast and Bowel Cancer Screening Program. In accordance with Qatar’s National Health Strategy 2011-2016, the screening program embodies the country’s new wellness model of healthcare and represents a shift towards preventive and community-based care. To ensure an effective and efficient implementation of the program, PHCC has tapped the expertise of an international consortium of companies. These include Fujifilm from Japan, which supplies medical equipment and information solutions; RadNet from the U.S.A., which performs clinical and operational services; and, Specialized Medical Solutions (SMS), which provides on-the-ground administrative support in Doha. For breast cancer screening, the campaign will initially focus on Qatari women 45 years and over in the first year. It will then include non-Qatari women starting from the second year of the program. The Supreme Council of Health of Qatar recommends that women 45 years and older get breast cancer screening every three years.

58

Screening before symptoms

Early detection of breast cancer vastly increases survival rates. When caught at an early stage, the survival rate from breast cancer is 98%, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This is particularly true for women who do not manifest any symptoms. Treatments are more likely to succeed when the disease is found early.

Symptoms and risk factors

A key part of the ‘Screen For Life’ campaign is to demystify cancer and to encourage understanding of signs, symptoms and risk factors so that women can make informed choices. Some symptoms of breast cancer are: • A persistent lump in the breast that may feel different from other breast tissue and is somewhat tender; • One or more lumps in the armpit; • Changes in the shape or size of the breast, particularly if only one breast changes; • Breast skin changes, such as dimpling, puckering, redness, increased warmth, visible veins, or itching; • Nipple changing such as sudden inversion, discharge or scaling. Additionally, there are several risk factors that may affect one’s chances of having the disease. Screening is strongly recommended if any of the top three risk factors are present. These include: • A close blood relative (mother, sister, daughter) has had breast cancer; • Has had breast cancer in the past; • Has inherited abnormal genetic markers that indicate risk, particularly two abnormal genes: BRCA1 (breast cancer gene one) and BRCA2 (breast cancer gene two) • Dense breasts – which means one has a lot of fibrous of glandular tissue and not much fatty tissue in the breasts. Breast density can be determined through screening;

• Had first child after the age of 30; • Started menstruating early (before age 12) and / or started menopause later (after the age of 55); • Is overweight, drinks alcohol and lives a sedentary lifestyle. Anyone with one or more of these symptoms, or any of the top three risk factors, should contact the PHCC cancer screening centre at info@screenforlife.qa .

Lowering the risk

Risk factors due to family history cannot be undone. However, women can make active choices about their health

and take preventive measures to help reduce the risk of breast cancer in many ways. Suggestions for healthy actions include: • • • • • •

Get at least 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity; Breastfeed for as long as possible; Limit the dose and duration of hormone therapy; Avoid alcohol; Don’t smoke; Control your weight.

Where and how to get screened

To ensure easy access to breast cancer screening, PHCC will

59

wellness

open screening centres specifically for breast cancer in Al Wakra and Leabaib at the beginning of the year. A mobile van will also be deployed to bring screening to various locations across Qatar. To arrange a screening appointment, contact the PHCC screening centre at info@screenforlife.qa .

What to expect

Screening is a very simple, non-invasive process. All of PHCC’s staff are highly trained and experienced professionals and use advanced technology to ensure an accurate reading. To encourage women to make a screening appointment, PHCC makes clear each step of the process:

• A female technologist will review one’s medical history and any symptoms that one has been experiencing related to the breast; • In a private dressing room, a woman prepares for the examination by putting on a gown; • In the exam room, the female technologist guides the patient to a standing position at the mammography machine and places the breast over the receptor; • The machine applies moderate compression to the breast for a few seconds to obtain the clearest image; • Two X-ray views are usually taken of each breast with a digital mammogram; • The female technologist views the images on the computer screen in the room, only to assess the image quality; • One can leave immediately and resume normal activities.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Pink Ribbon

The move to draw further attention into the disease gained momentum in 1985 when Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) was launched. Then, in 1993, in establishing the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of The Estee Lauder Companies, along with Alexandra Penney, former editor of SELF magazine, made the pink ribbon an international symbol of breast cancer awareness. Since then, these initiatives have grown into a worldwide health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October. Breast Cancer Awareness Month focuses activities for four weeks on increasing and sustaining awareness about the disease. It also provides information and support to those affected by breast cancer. In some parts of the world, various charities dedicated to the disease raise funds for further research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

Breast Cancer Screening Impacts More Than Just You

The decision to take action on regular breast screening not only may save your life, it also has a profound impact on your family. Knowing that you are taking measures to prioritize your health and well-being, your family gains peace of mind—and a strong example. Since treatment is more likely to succeed on cancer caught at an early stage, you contribute the best possible outcome to your family.

Qatar in action

Qatar is committed to reducing the incidence and morbidity of breast cancer in the country. Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser stated: "Qatar will be known not just for its work in improving health globally, but for providing the very best healthcare to its own citizens.” With the ‘Screen For Life’ program to promote breast cancer screening, PHCC is following through on that commitment.

interview with

Dr. Shaikha Sami Abu Shaikha

Dr. Shaikha speaks to ABODE about the Cancer Screening campaign by PHCC. “We are thrilled to see the launch of this campaign as it is a forum for us to share news and best practice related to cancer screening and treatment and to motivate our workforce to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients.”

A

BODE: What are the causes? Dr. Shaikha Sami Abu Shaikha: Cancer is a complex group of diseases with many possible causes. Some of the known causes of cancer include: genetic factors; lifestyle factors such as tobacco use; improper diet and lack of physical activity; certain types of infections; exposure to UV rays from sunlight and different types of chemicals; and exposure to excessive radiation such as from x-rays and gamma rays.

A: Can diet be a factor? SAS: Having a proper diet and maintaining a healthy and ideal weight reduces the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Being obese or overweight increases the risk of getting several types of cancer such as colon, breast, and kidney among others. But the link between being overweight and getting cancer is not fully understood. For example, women who are both overweight and post menopause have been observed to be at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. The reason for this is not clear. A: Could you highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness? SAS: Early detection of breast cancer vastly increases survival rates. According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the survival rate from breast cancer is 98% when caught at an early stage. This is particularly true for women who do not manifest any symptoms. Treatments are more likely to succeed when the disease is found early. A: How can we prevent breast cancer? SAS: Risk factors due to family history cannot be undone. However, women can make active choices about their health and take preventive measures to help reduce the risk and maybe even prevent being inflicted with breast cancer. Some of the

suggested actions include: getting at least 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity; breastfeeding for as long as possible; limiting the dose and duration of hormone therapy; limiting alcohol intake; avoiding smoking; and controlling one’s weight. It must also be emphasised that breast cancer screening is highly encouraged even for those who are not experiencing any symptoms as early detection leads to more effective treatments and vastly increases survival rates. A: What is the proper technique for a breast self-exam, and how often should you do it? SAS: Conducting breast self-examination is not advised. The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) under the direction of the National Cancer Program and Supreme Council of Health, has been given the authority to launch a breast and bowel screening campaign called ‘Screen for Life’ in order to provide and facilitate scientific and reliable examination using state-of-the-art equipment for more accurate results. A: What is a mammogram? How often should a woman have one? SAS: A mammogram is a form of X-ray machine used to evaluate any changes to the breast tissue that might indicate early signs of breast cancer. Under the guidelines of the Qatar’s Supreme Council of Health (SCH), it is recommended that women 45 years and over must undergo mammography once every three years. A: How is psychological support important for a breast cancer patient and her family? SAS: People who have been initially diagnosed with cancer are emotionally distressed. During such time, 50% of cancer patients suffer from depression and anxiety, which negatively affects their quality of life. Even of family members and caretakers of cancer patients suffer some form of psychological stress. It has been observed that an estimated 67% experience anxiety and approximately 42% experience depression. It is therefore important for health improvement and wellbeing of people to provide early and appropriate psychological and emotional support to cancer patients and everybody else affected by cancer.

The Alkaline Diet

“We are what we eat; may food be our medicine and medicine our food” By Daniela Annunziata

W

e are all aware of how crucial water is to human survival. We also know that fruit and vegetables play a major role in our diet. It's important to understand pH in water and in food and how it can affect our wellbeing. All organisms function best within a given range, and the alkaline diet focuses on the balance and relation between foods and water in the body. Over-acidity interferes with life itself, and keeping your body neutral is important for your health. Every food you eat produces either an acid or alkaline residue after it's digested. The main staples of the typical diet produce more acid: fish, meat, poultry, cheese, milk, grains, and nuts all produce acid. Foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and particularly leafy greens are alkaline producing. You should cut out as much as possible all animal proteins, grains and dairy foods, substituting where possible fresh fruits and green vegetables, which are the most alkaline. A list of alkaline foods can be very helpful while planning your weekly menu. In general, an alkaline diet detox is a healthy diet. You are reducing the amount of high-fat foods that you are eating and are instead giving your body healthy natural foods. Deviations above or below a 7.35-7.45 pH range in the blood can signal potentially serious and dangerous symptoms or states of disease. To understand how dangerous high acidity levels can be, take the example of acid rain “killing” a lake. The fish literally suffocate to death because the acid in the lake chemically binds with all the available oxygen. Conversely, if you raise the pH of

It’s been a month since the kids went back to school but you’re still struggling to get back into your exercise habit. ABODE thought you might have trouble, so we sought the help of Crunch’s top trainer and CEO, Nuwaid Pocker, who shared 10 moves to help ease you back into your groove. Trainer Nuwaid Pocker of Crunch Photography Jessie Palanca Feature Coordinated Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Model Imane Belbachir LOCATION Bay View 26 Wellness Centre at Mövenpick Hotel West Bay

Here are a few beginner exercises to get you started. Repeat each exercise three times. Split the workout evenly throughout the week to rest the muscle groups between sessions.

Straight Arm Cable Pushdown: Target Muscle: Latissimus Dorsi - or "lats" Grab the bar from the top pulley of a pull-down machine using a wider than shoulder-width pronated (palms down) grip. Step backwards, bend your torso forward at the waist by around 30- 40 degrees with your arms fully extended and a slight bend at the elbows. Now tighten the lats, keeping the arms straight, pull the bar down by contracting the lats until your hands are next to the side of the thighs. Breathe out as you perform this step. While keeping the arms straight, go back to the starting position while breathing in and repeat 12 times. Tip: Compliment this exercise by adding the Bent Over Barbell Row

64

Dumbbell Flat Bench Flyes: Target Muscle: Middle Chest Lie on your back with your feet placed flat on the floor. Now hold two dumbbells in front of you at shoulder width (or touch the dumbbells together) with the palms of your hands facing each other. With the palms facing upwards throughout the exercise, lower out to the sides with slightly bent arms. Breathe in as you perform this portion of the movement. Note that throughout the movement, the arms position should remain stationary only allowing movement to occur at the shoulder joint. Stretch down completely at the bottom of each movement. Do 12 repetitions. Tip: Add Barbell Bench Press along with this exercise during your routine.

Lateral Raise:

Triceps Pushdown: Target Muscle: Triceps Grip a straight or angled pulley bar with hands placed 12 inches (30 cm) apart. Bend the knees to assist with your body while bending slightly forward. Start form under your pec line (not higher) and press the bar downwards. Exhale as you perform this movement. Hold for a second at this position for complete contraction and then release slowly to go back to the starting position as you inhale and repeat 10 times. Tip: Add Triceps Pull-down along with this exercise during your routine.

Target Muscle: Lateral Deltoid Stand with feet comfortably apart, rounded back, knees and elbows bent. The dumbbells must "start" in front of your body, not from the side of your thighs. Raise upwards in front of the body but to the side with your arms bent. (The arms should be at the ten minutes past ten o'clock position). Raise no higher than the height of your ears, while you exhale. Pause for a second at the top. An important point to remember is that the back of the dumbbell is kept higher than the front. Lower the dumbbells back down slowly to the starting position as you inhale and repeat 10 times. Tip: Add Shoulder Press along with this exercise during your routine.

Floor Leg Raise Barbell Body Drag Curl (Overarm grip) Target Muscle: Biceps Take a shoulder-width grip on a barbell and starting with the bar resting against the upper legs, raise it from thighs to throat as you exhale, keeping the bar in contact with the body at all times. Control your shoulder from lifting and keep your elbows back. This will perpetuate the involvement of the biceps and take the pressure off the front deltoids. Lower the bar slowly and repeat 10 times. Tip: Add Dumbbell Curl along with this exercise during your routine.

Target Muscle: Lower Abdominals Lie flat on the floor and place your palms flat down next to the hips. Raise your bent knees towards your chest and lift your head forward at the same time. Your hips should raise off the floor during the movement. Exhale as you compress your body, inhale as you return to extended position and repeat 20 times. Tip: Take minimal to no rest between each abdominal exercise.

fitness

Leg Extension Target Muscle: Quadriceps Sit on the leg extension machine with your legs under the pad (feet pointed forward) and the hands holding the side bars. Using your quadriceps, extend your legs to the maximum as you exhale. Pause a second on the contracted position. Slowly lower the weight back to the original position as you inhale, ensuring that you do not go past the 90-degree angle limit at the bottom. Repeat 12 times. Tip: Add Lunges along with this exercise during your routine.

Leg Curl Target Muscle: Hamstrings Rest the back of lower leg on top of padded lever (few inches under the calves) and secure the lap pad against your thighs, just above the knees. Grasp the side handles on the machine and lower the machine lever as far as possible to the back of your thighs by flexing at the knees as you exhale. Contract for a second and slowly return to the starting position as you breathe in and repeat 12 times. Tip: Add Seated Calf Raise along with this exercise during your routine.

Double-up Target Muscle: Complete Frontal Midsection Lie on your back, hands behind the head, legs extended, toes pointed. While exhaling and raising your upper body one-third of the way upwards, lift your legs with knees bent. Inhale and return to starting position, repeat 16 times. Tip: Abs are "made" in the kitchen! Manage your diet correctly to reduce the fat layer that is hiding your abdominal muscles.

Floor Crunch Target Muscle: Upper and Middle Abdominals Lock heels over the end of a barbell or bench. Place your hands behind your head and roll forward, exhaling as you do. Do not take the small of the back off the surface. As you roll up, tuck your pelvis forward in the contracted position. Inhale as you return to starting position repeat 16 times. Tip: Abdominal exercises do not reduce your belly fat - spot reduction is a myth.

TENTS

Dreaming about the extraordinary outdoor life

T

his season the House of Hud presents a wide range of new options in outdoor luxury marquees.

Katherine Hudson founded The House of Hud in 2004. Her tents are amongst the most amazing in the world, and this year she won The Wedding Industry Award. Inspiration comes from distant places and with unique details to create the perfect venue. Born from a passion for creating beautiful, inspiring party environments and a love of colour, texture and pattern, the enthusiasm for creating unique events

68

led Founder Katherine Hudson to travel the World sourcing fabrics and furniture to create a range of bespoke marquees, event furniture and themed props which now decorate events with colour, texture and a unique personality. This individual style is described as "a fairytale of warm, sumptuous colour" by our clients and transforms every event it touches. This collection of unique marquees have English-inspired interiors as well as ethnic influences and include an 'Arts and Crafts' inspired interior, vintagestyle tents, Tea Party tents as well as the Arabic, Moroccan and Bollywood themes

that provided the initial inspiration for the collection. Her individual style is described as "a fairytale of warm, sumptuous colour" by her clients and transforms every event it touches. The Arabian collection Is inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights stories. Beautiful ornaments and furniture compliment the style. These marquees quite literally stretch over any space, creating unique party areas out of patios or gardens. The tents can also be attached to a building,

meaning your party can flow from your house to your garden effortlessly. The Bombay Boudoir marquee is a vision of vibrant pinks and burnt-orange linings with intricate sparkling mirror work. This warm and fun marquee will transform any marquee party into a Bombay dream, whipping guests into a frenzy of ecstatic dancing and jubilation. Designed the year Elizabeth Hurley married in India, when Bollywood-mania took hold of the UK, it's a bright, vibrant fun interior that looks especially beautiful twinkling in sunlight, or lit up with a mirror ball and candles in the evening.

centenaries; William Morris was part of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1930's. Motivated by studies of the Islamic collection at the V&A museum, he was inspired to design his famous floral patterns. The ivory and sage green screen-printed interior drew from his beautiful patterns,

creating a Quintessentially English tent interior and 'English Country Garden' look, perfect for unique marquee weddings and summer garden parties. A selection of beautiful pieces of furniture hand covered in his designs are available for hire to complete the look.

NEW COLLECTIONS FROM WILLIAM YEOWARD

The Viva la Fiesta collection This bold, Mexican-inspired tent is the most recent addition to the collection. Inspired by travels in Central America as well as the 'Day of the Dead' and Frida Kahlo. It is comprised of a brightlycoloured floral motif for the ceiling swags and wall drapes, with grey laceeffect background for the ceiling on white cotton and creating fresh, funky look for a wedding, or summer party.

The Luxury Yurt Tent Is a smaller and more private marquee for few guests and the interior can be as you wish. These spacious 5m diameter yurts are predominantly used as tented accommodation although can also be

used as stand-alone party areas too. They have an organic luxury feel with their exposed wood and white canvas with traditional Turkmen rugs and outside bands.

Cacio e Pepe stepbystep

Feature Coordinated by Marlynne Mallari-Dela Pena Photography by Jessie Palanca

What sets a restaurant apart? According to Marco Calcaterra, Executive Chef at Antica Pesa, it's the uncompromised belief in preserving well-loved traditional recipes so that a new generation can still enjoy food the "real" Italian way. Cacio e Pepe (literally “cheese and pepper”) is an incredibly simple dish to delight anyone's palate. The ‘heat’ of pepper and creamy texture of cheese makes this an all-time favourite. step 1

And after a full day of attending to business or perhaps sightseeing— whatever brings the most contentment to your heart - make sure to grab dinner at the hotel’s Sugar, one of the city’s best alfresco terrace restaurant/lounges with a panoramic view of Hong Kong. I was looking for a combination of all these characteristics so I opted for the Upper House, designed by architect Andre Fu, it’s a contemporary hotel whose simplistic calming approach, suggests a reverence for Chinese tradition. The property acts as a curated space of sorts for contemporary art. Within its collection situated throughout the hotel you’ll find sculptures and installations by the likes of: Cynthia Sah; Man Fung Yi, Choi Tae Hoon, and Hiroshiwata Sawada.

After taking in some art while sipping jasmine tea (just how the Hong Kongers do) I set out to see this pulsating metropolis. If there is one image that could capture Hong Kong, it’s the panoramic view of the harbor atop Victoria Peak. You can reach the top via the Peak Tram, a 120-year-old funicular railway that departs from Garden Road, or you can catch a cab to the Lion’s Pavilion and take in the beauty from there. Looking down on the city from this strategic vantage point you see the harbor, the skyline, you feel the energy that sparkles in the air like fireflies. It’s a city that invites you to search for adventure. For a happy belly, try a combination of culinary fusion and tradition. At the restaurant Ho Lee Fook, TaiwaneseCanadian Chef Jowett Yu makes a divine wagyu short rib with kimchi. The Mido Café, with its well-preserved 1960s interior, is much loved by actors and hipsters, and its signature baked spare-ribs rice is mouthwatering. For tea and dim sum (it translates to ‘touch of the heart’), go to the source. Established in 1926, Lin Heung Lau is Hong Kong’s oldest teahouse. Hong Kongers of all ages flock here for its scrumptious selection of traditional favorites, such as: steamed dumplings, steamed pork buns and spring rolls.

This city really combines it all: art, flair, life, fashion, culture, business and that incredible skyline. Hong Kong is a port city of trade with business ‘wheeling and dealings’, as well as a place where global luxury brands seem to occupy every street corner and shopping mall. We can’t leave out: objects of desire. You can find fashionable articles and curios at the HKTDC Hong Kong Design Gallery, which is dedicated to promoting creativity, and innovation. Here you’ll find an array of local designs from home to apparel, far from the cliché souvenir, to take back to those near and dear waiting for you at home. For the best place to shop for designer names, turn to the many malls: The Landmark in Central, Times Square in Causeway Bay, Pacific Place in Admiralty, and Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui. You’ll find outlets at Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau selling off-season items for discounted prices. There is no question about it—Hong Kong is on the top of the world’s greatest city list. Vibrant, colourful, and at times chaotic, it’s eclectic and electrifying; a cosmopolitan city yet a tropical paradise; a banking mecca, and a destination for those with luxury in mind. This is a place that needs to be experienced. Stand on the peak, see the magnitude of the harbour and feel the excitement take hold.

The best of Hong Kong By Jorge Granda

The trip was organized by Shangri-La Doha to give residents in Qatar a glimpse of the Shangri-La experience they will bring to the country. Special thanks to Ruwaida Abela, Director of Communications of the hotel and Shrey Nayar, Marketing Executive of Cathay Pacific.

Lobby

Hong Kong is an autonomous territory on the Southern Coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. This cosmopolitan island is known for its astonishing skyline, cultural diversity, history, international cuisine and for its impressive hotels. ABODE stays at the Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong and Kowloon Shangri-La to discover the many wonders of the city and these two luxurious properties.

Shangri-La Hotel

I have visited Hong Kong before and I was awed by this small Asian island. Hong Kong is one of the most cosmopolitan cities I have ever had the chance to explore. It is home to the longest outdoor covered escalator system, Disneyland and perhaps the most impressive skyline in Asia. It is also home to Island ShangriLa, Hong Kong, and Kowloon Shangri-La, both exclusive and imposing hotels.

Upon entering the hotel I am given a brief on all the facilities and a small tour. I am told that the hotel comprises 531 superb rooms and 34 luxurious suites, eight acclaimed restaurants, a serviced business centre, a health club equipped with a 24-hour gymnasium, a 645-square-metre ballroom and six function rooms. The hotel's fleet of limousines includes a Rolls-Royce Phantom, Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloons and luxury six-seater vans.

ISLAND SHANGRI-LA, HONG KONG Open since March 1, 1991, Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong is managed by Shangri-La International Hotel Management Limited. The 56 floor hotel is located above the city’s most prestigious shopping and entertainment complex in central district of Hong Kong.

THE ROOM Before heading out for dinner I go and check out my Horizon Club Harbour View Room. The room is one of the biggest that I have ever stayed in. The view is impressive; you can see the harbour, skyscrapers and beautiful green mountains. The white king-size bed is as comfortable as can be. The Austrian

crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling adds to the luxurious ambiance. The room resembles an exclusive high-end penthouse more than a hotel room. The oriental touch in the décor is palpable in every corner. Staying here is an experience in itself. THE RESTAURANTS My first stop was the Horizon Club Lounge. Located on the 56th floor, it's the highest executive lounge on the island. With staggering views of the city, it's pure luxury. Here you can unwind, sip away at the refreshment of your choice or go to the outdoor roof garden. I am told it is the only venue of its kind in Hong Kong. What impressed me the most while going up to the lounge was the silk mural called, The Great Motherland of China, which measures 16 storeys tall and can be viewed from

levels 41 to 56 of the hotel. It consists of 250 panels of Chinese silk and was created by 40 artists from the Beijing Arts and Crafts Research Institute who worked diligently for six months to craft the masterpiece. I didn’t have the chance to visit all of the outlets during my stay, but I did have a glimpse of all of them and no matter which restaurant one would choose all the outlets offer high-end cuisines and stylish dé cor. cafe TOO was one of the restaurants I had the pleasure to try. It is the main dining at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong, and it features a teppan, a semi-private room, a cafe bar and 10 kitchen theatres. The buffet is quite massive offering an array of different dishes including Australian Wagyu beef prepared à la minute. Another two of the house specialties are the Scallop sashimi with sea urchin and fresh Boston Lobster, Scallop sashimi with sea urchin and fresh Boston Lobsters. The restaurant can accommodate around 225 people. The culinary highlight of my stay was the Lobster Bar and Grill. This stylish restaurant features a long bar area of mahogany timber, floor-to-ceiling windows and two aquariums. The food in the Lobster Bar and Grill is as stylish and spectacularly tasteful as the décor. I would recommend any of the seafood dishes and the beef. I had a piece of the steak that just melted in my mouth. Other restaurants in the hotel include the French restaurant Petrus on level 56, Waterside Terrace on level 8 that offers Thai cuisine, the Japanese restaurant Nadaman on level seven, the Michelin two-starred Summer Palace on level 5, and the patisserie Island Gourmet on level 5.

Kowloon Shangri-La Exterior

The Jaula Spa

Kowloon Shangri-Lobby

KOWLOON SHANGRI-LA As impressive and elegant as the Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong is the Kowloon Shangri-La’s. Upon entering I was mesmerized by the lobby of the hotel. Covered in two storeys of marble, the lobby features a fountain, two large murals showcasing Shangri-La Valley and a large golden wood carving handcrafted in Beijing. Featuring 688 rooms including 42 suites, the average guest room size is 45 square metres. Open since 1981, this fantastic property is located on the waterfront of Victoria Harbour, near to shopping complexes and business centres in Tsimshatsui East on the Kowloon Peninsula.

THE MOST ENJOYABLE JOURNEY My knowledge of Cathay Pacific Airways was limited to the fact that it was an Asian airline. After experiencing the Business Class service of the airline I am saddened not to have discovered Cathay before! The airbus A330-300 aircraft that covers the route from Doha to Hong Kong is beautiful both outside and inside. The Business Class features an 82-inch long fully flat bed and a bed extension which increases the width by 6.5 inches to provide additional support. A toggle allows passengers to control their degree of privacy with direct aisle access and a perfect view through the windows.

THE ROOMS My room once again had an unbeatable view. This time the backdrop was the famous Victoria Harbour and some interesting views of the city. The best part of staying in both Shangri-Las was the view of Hong Kong that each room offered. Each is beautifully furnished and fully equipped with everything one would need.

My travel experience was memorable and extremely enjoyable. I kept myself entertained during the entire flight with a selection of entertainment that included 100 movies, 500 TV shows, 888 music CDs, 22 radio channels, and 70 games. I literally didn’t want to get off the plane.

THE RESTAURANTS During my very short stay I did not have the opportunity to try any of the restaurants, but Kowloon Shangri-La houses the Shang Palace, 161-seat Chinese restaurant, the Japanese restaurant Nadaman, Angelini that offer guests Italian cuisine, international restaurant Café Kool, Déli Kool, the lobby lounge, and a tapas bar.
