Qatari Traditions in

Ramadan Text from Baseera Magazine by Dominic M. Foley

The essence of Ramadan is same the world over but the flavour of Ramadan differs from country to country due to varying customs. Here in Qatar there are many Ramadan traditions that have been handed down through the generations. We find these traditions very much alive with the month of Ramadan a daily celebration in one manner or another.

Daq Al Harees

Sharing the Iftar

This is an occasion celebrated while preparing for the month of Ramadan. “Daq Al Harees” means ‘crushing wheat’ and names the special day for this purpose. In large households the family buys a large amount of wheat and invites a group of women, skilled in grinding wheat, to come and do the grinding. This is usually accompanied by the singing of traditional songs. The wheat is then used throughout the month of Ramadan for preparing traditional meals.

Another Qatari tradition is the sending of food for Iftar (the meal to break the fast) to your neighbours. In the past you would see the streets fill up with children rushing around, carrying dishes from house to house, trying to reach their neighbours and family before sunset, so that their mothers would not be cross with them. Sometimes children would leave dishes at the neighbours’ and be given another to take back home. This Qatari tradition has its roots deep in the Islamic teachings.

The Ramadan Cannon Visiting Family and Friends Ramadan is a time for strengthening ties with one’s family and community, a cornerstone of Islam. On the first few days of the month, families in Qatar visit relatives, neighbours and friends, to congratulate them on the coming of this special month. Visits usually take place after ‘Isha’ and ‘Taraweeh’ prayers and now you will find people staying for simple meals late into the evening.

In the past the firing of a cannon used to signal the end of the fast at sunset. This was done so that even those away from the town would be able to know that it was time to break the fast. This tradition is still carried on ceremoniously and broadcast live on Qatar TV. You can generally see this live, every day in Doha, close to the Corniche, at the General Post Office.

The Ramadan Sufra Iftar time is a special time when all the extended family meet to break the fast. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and grandchildren all gather at the grandfather’s house for a communal meal. In large Qatari homes the majilis is usually where the men have their Iftar and the doors are always open for any guest to drop in and share a meal without any prior notice. The Ramadan Sufra (table) varies from home to home but it is never without the following essentials: • Tamr (dates) and Laban (buttermilk) to break the fast. • Al Thareed: a meal that consists of layers of extremely thin flat bread, called Rugag, which have been saturated with a meat and vegetable broth. It is sprinkled with some ground cinnamon and seasoned with dried black lemons. • Al Harees: a dish which consists of small pieces of meat, wheat and water. • Al Lugaimat: a Qatari donut that is made from flour, sugar and yeast. It is fried then dipped in sweet syrup.

EXPATS GUIDELINES DURING RAMADAN • Dress appropriately. Make sure you don’t show too much skin, so watch your hemlines and necklines. • Refrain from eating, drinking and smoking in public places from dawn to dusk. Respect people fasting so don’t eat, drink and smoke in public. • Don’t play loud music. Especially during prayer time TV and radios should be on silent to show respect. • Avoid driving during dusk. Roads will be very busy then as people break their fast. They will be all in a rush to get food so better stay away of the roads for that hour or so. • Do not engage in public displays of affection. Especially during Ramadan.

Al Ghabga

The Night Before EId

The ‘Ghabga’ is a meal that takes place after midnight and to which guests are invited to share Sohour, the last meal a person takes before sunrise and the beginning of the fast. These meals are usually held in the first twenty days of Ramadan because in the last ten days of Ramadan Muslims usually dedicate the latter parts of the night to prayer, reading Qur’an and getting closer to Allah.

On the night preceding Eid people give Zakaat al-Fitr which is a compulsory charity given to the poor. This consolidates the sense of community and brotherhood emphasized by Islam. It means that all the community, rich and poor can enjoy this festive time. The Zakaat is to be given in the form of food but in certain circumstances it has been agreed that money would suffice instead.

EId al-Fitr At the end of Ramadan is an Islamic celebration called Eid al-Fitr. This is a day of rejoicing and rewarding one’s self and family for the discipline and hard work practiced throughout the month of Ramadan. On the day of Eid, after Fajr prayer, the whole family, the children before the adults, gets dressed up in their new clothes and go to attend the Eid prayer. Eid prayers take place in assigned mosques, usually in the open air, in each town and city. This is to enable the whole community to gather as one. After returning from the mosque, it is time for the men folk to visit the houses of their relatives, usually the elderly, to pay their respects. Here they will be received in the majilis, where greetings will be exchanged and where they will be offered the Eid Gedou’ sweets and refreshments. In the afternoon and evening it is the ladies’ turn to go visiting relatives and neighbours. They will usually begin with their parents, grandparents and elderly relatives and neighbours. You will find that the home of an elderly lady or gentleman is never empty of guests on the day of Eid.

your guide to staying

Healthy During Ramadan Haitham Khalid, a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef and founder of healthy lifestyle company Fitness With Food, provides us with his three top Ramadan eating tips, some Ramadan exercising tips, a recipe helping you to stay energized and treat your body well during Ramadan. Haitham explains that when your body is weak it will most crave the things that it associates with high energy impact, such as sugars, fats and carbohydrates, because your body recognizes these things as providing an instant hit. Haitham says that it is alright during Ramadan to increase your fat intake by 5-10 per cent more than usual (as the excess fat should be consumed during the fast), but you must also give your body other key nutrients it needs and stay well hydrated.

Eating Tips

Tip 1 - Get Sugar Levels Up in the Right Way

Open your fast in the traditional way with dates and milk and also some fruit. The best time to eat fruit is on an empty stomach, as your digestive system works quicker and distributes the vitamins contained in the fruit more efficiently. During Iftar, drink a glass of juice (120 ml) to help normalize possible low sugar (hypoglycemia) levels and provide the much needed “instant” energy along with hydration. Eating lots of dates may normalize sugar levels as dried fruits contain high levels of fructose. If you have diabetes, please

consult with your health care provider for medication or dietary adjustments.

Tip 2 – Monitor Portion Sizes and Space Out Your Food Intake Divide your eating into three meals, Sohour (which is the morning meal just before the fast starts), Iftar (which is the evening snack when the fast is opened) and then dinner in between the Iftar and Sohour. Try to drink a litre of water at both Iftar and Sohour and at least another litre in between. It is important not to overeat at Iftar, a small amount of food is ideal.

Eating smaller portions frequently is much better than eating less but bigger portions. Haitham told us that he eats five to six times a day everyday outside Ramadan as he burns a lot of energy and that his portion sizes are rarely more than he can hold in his palms if he cupped them.

Tip 3 – Avoid Excessive Consumption of High Sugar and High Fat Foods In most households there is usually a greater variety of foods during Ramadan compared with the rest of the year. Sugary foods and drinks are consumed more frequently during

20

ABODE July-Aug.indd 20

ABODE special

Ramadan, buffet-style social gatherings at Iftar are popular where traditional dishes are often a feature, such as desserts, especially those made only during Ramadan. Lots of these foods are high in saturated fats and sugars and although a slight increase in fatty food intake is ok, you must try not to overindulge in the foods that you know have high levels of fats and sugars or you may well put on weight. Include complex carbohydrate foods that are rich in fibre, such as grains and seeds, which can be found in items such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, lentils and beans. Also make sure

you are incorporating green vegetables into your meals and not just meats and starchy carbohydrates.

Healthy Recipe

Fibre-rich foods help increase the feeling of fullness and promote good blood glucose levels. Fasting during the day can also increase stomach acid content and cause feelings of pain or discomfort. High-fibre foods during dinner can help neutralize this acid and alleviate pain. Also remember to increase fluid consumption with fibre intake to prevent excessive gas.

Lamb Chops, Brown Freekeh, Chickpea & Cumin Soup

Ingredients:

• 6 best end lamb chops • 1 large onion • 1 bay leaf • 2 carrots • 2-3 sticks of celery • cumin seeds and power • black seeds • turmeric, garlic (6-8 cloves) • chilli flakes, smoked paprika, coriander • olive oil • 10-12 chopped tomatoes • 2 Tbsp of vinegar • sea salt, chicken or vegetable stock • fresh chickpeas (to be soaked the night before) and brown freekeh (also known as cracked bulgur wheat). Everyone’s taste is different so use your own taste buds when cooking.

Procedure:

Exercise Tips Tip 1 – Don’t Stress Your Body When it’s Vulnerable During the holy month it is better to avoid hard training regimes and it is a great opportunity to give your body a rest if you are physically active everyday which gives you more time to eat and enjoy with family and the local community. Your change in your eating routine will affect your energy levels and your body’s recovery ability.

Tip 2 – Don’t Stop Exercising Completely! You should not just put your feet up and sleep the month away – it is important to remember the qualities that you exercise during Ramadan - patience, modesty and sacrifice. Although you can use the holy month as an active rest month moderate exercise is good and will keep your body going. Haitham recommends swimming before bed or just before Iftar. Haitham will be offering low intensity fitness classes in different locations around Doha during Ramadan to keep your body somewhat active. For more information visit www.fitnesswithfood.com.

• Soak chickpeas overnight, then boil the following day for about 8 minutes with a tablespoon of salt, 1 piece of smashed garlic and a pinch of bicarbonate of soda then add brown freekeh for a further 8-10 minutes. Both should be 80% cooked. Drain water and add a drizzle of olive oil and some chopped coriander – this completes the stock and you can set it aside. • Finely dice the onion, carrots and celery. Place in a bowl with the bay leaf and set aside. • Crush garlic with chilli flakes (as per taste) with a pestle and mortar adding 1 small teaspoon of each of the cumin seeds and the powder, a pinch of black seeds (the mix should be like a paste at this point) then add half a teaspoon of all other spices mix well then add a dash of olive oil mix to a paste. • Put a drizzle of olive oil into a hot saucepan - add lamb chops and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side then add the onion, carrot and celery mix and cook over a low heat for 2-3 minutes then add the garlic and chilli paste and cook out the spice for 1-2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sea salt and allow the sauce to cook for a further 5-10 minutes on a low heat and simmer until the lamb is tender, about 1 hour. • Add the stock of the cooked chickpeas with freekeh. Chop the raw courgettes and add those as well - cook for a further 10 minutes. • Add half a bunch of washed and chopped coriander just before serving and taste for seasoning - you can add more seasoning if needed at this point with a dash of extra virgin olive oil on top. Eat while hot. This dish can be severed with brown pita bread and plain or lemon flavoured Greek yogurt.

Magical Family Celebration By Moona Masri-Whitice and gaby ubidia

When we speak about the holy month of Ramadan, we are referring to a religious celebration that involves the entire family so why not take the time to turn the entire house into a magical celebration as opposed to just decorating the table. The simplest and least expensive way to decorate the house is by hanging some homemade moons and stars. Ask the kids to help make them so that they get into the spirit of things. Buy some gold and silver foil and cut them in the shapes of stars and crescent moons. Attach these moon- and star-shaped pieces with string and hang them on the ceiling of your house. You may also find that colourful lanterns can be also strung up in different rooms and placed on tables to create an luminous atmosphere. At night the kids can light them right before Iftar or Sohour.

Decorations Things you can use for serving

Use bright colours to enhance the setting, purple, pink, turquoise, and mix them with gold or silver trays and serving pieces. Buy lanterns in different sizes so you add dimension to your groupings either on the table or the ones you hang on the ceiling. Remember to decorate the dining table or buffet table with a bright colourful tablecloth that matches the theme and ribbon and lantern colours being used.

• The tablecloth is part of the main setting so try to find one in purple and gold in order to enhance the arabic decorations used around this buffet table. • Buy Sequins, tassels and ribbons to hang lanterns and stars. • Use colourful cushions in different corners of the room. • Look for Morrocan tea sets to serve your guests tea with. Places to buy Ramadan things: • THE One - Villaggio • Home Centre Stores • Oriental Carpets - behind IBQ Al Saad branch

Transport yourself and your loved ones to the "1001 nights" in your own beautiful Arabian soirée.

The latest dish from the fashion world Be smart with the new Giordano casual collection

Juicy Couture's latest fragrance Juicy Couture introduces Couture La La, a bold new companion to the original Juicy Couture fragrance originally launched in 2006. Launching this month, Couture La La unveils the daring and unexpected sides of the Juicy girl. “There are lots of beautiful and alluring notes to Couture La La, which is very much like the essence of the Juicy girl,” says LeAnn Nealz, President and Chief Creative Officer of Juicy Couture. “There are many layers to her personality. She’s confident and fearless but at the same time flirty and feminine. The Juicy Couture girl lives and breathes couture — it’s part of her everyday fashion and fragrance choices. Couture La La evokes her free spirit and in turn, she makes a statement without even trying.”

The latest collection by Giordano offers customers easy-towear smart casual options with appealing cotton shirts for both men and women. “At Giordano, we regularly introduce new collections to give our customers plenty of options for creating their own day-to-day casual style,” commented Ishwar Chugani, Managing Director of Giordano Middle East FZE and Executive Director of Giordano International. “We want to make sure that every time they visit our stores across the region, they will find something new, something wearable, and something that offers great value and style as a wardrobe essential.” Shop Giordano’s collection online at www.giordano-me.com or visit its City Centre branch.

Celebrities all over the world, from Royals to A-list actresses and IT models, wear her beautiful gowns to their red carpet and glamorous events on a regular basis. Temperley London, the label she launched in 2000, is currently sold in 300 stores in 37 different countries, boasts three stand-alone boutiques in London, Los Angeles and Dubai and since last month can count its 4th location in our very own Doha.

Both lines are extremely successful and her expansion in the Middle East is proof of her success…not bad for a simple girl who grew up on her parents’ cider farm in the English countryside. Nowadays Alice is still an easygoing and simple lady, with a great passion for fashion and style. ABODE had the pleasure to catch up with her and discuss her successful career and future projects, while we browsed among her latest and fabulous collection.

by Francesca Moser

ABODE met Alice last month at the inauguration of her first Doha boutique. We were immediately captivated by her quirky-chic style and friendly smile.

She also launched a sister brand “Alice by Temperley” in 2010 targeted for a younger audience, with more accessible prices and with a more casual-flirty feel.

How does your collection relate to this unique region? A: I have designed for many people

patchworks, fabrics, lace and beads as a young child. My grandmother and parents thought I was a bit of a magpie. I used to cut up clothes and played around with sewing machines. At age 11 I got really into it. I fell in love with black and white movies and was inspired by Fred Astaire. I loved dressing up like in the movies with heels and got lost in a fantasy – I admired women from that era.

What are the factors that you take into consideration when buying new brands for the website? A: We partly serve as an outlet for NET-A-PORTER, however we have our own dedicated buying team that sources 75 per cent of the site’s stock directly from the brands. We ship to over 170 countries so our buyers scour the world in search of the best products from new and established designers for our customers.

What are the main challenges that you face every day in managing THE OUTNET.COM? A: THE OUTNET is always open for business, which means our customers can shop whenever they like. This means that our teams in London, Manhattan and Shanghai need to

communicate with one another constantly. Also our editorial content has to be updated, fresh and engaging. It can be hard work but it’s an exciting process.

What makes THE OUTNET.COM different from other websites? A: We offer great value product with a full-price experience. With our new app for iPhone and iPad, our customers can shop anytime, anywhere. Last year THE OUTNET developed its own collection called Iris & Ink. Comprised of styling essentials that perfectly complement every exceptional designer piece available on the site, our customers can now shop an entire look with us.

What are the most popular brands on the website? A: Our customers love shoes, especially those designed by

Christian Louboutin! THE OUTNET is the only official online outlet for Christian Louboutin, so whenever we upload his product it sells out immediately – we sell one pair of Louboutins every three seconds! Also Hervé Léger bandage dresses or color pop jewelry by Marni are very popular.

Are you adding new brands in the near future? A: We stock over 250 designers and are always adding new brands to THE OUTNET. Saloni is a beautiful print designer based in London and India that we will be launching shortly. Other recent brands we have bought into are Charlotte Olympia and Anya Hindmarch.

Based on your experience, do Arab women order and choose different brands then European and American women? A: Women across the world are more similar in their shopping habits than you might think. There are some women who are quite fashion forward in their taste while others stick to more classic pieces and this can be seen around the world.

Beauty Q&A

HOW TO GET PICTURE-PERFECT SKIN Photography Jessie Palanca Model Mary Laforteza

This month Carla Tabet , the Training and Special Events Manager for Salam’s Perfume and Cosmetics Division here in Doha, gives us few easy tips on how to achieve the flawless and radiant skin you’ve always wanted! Before

step 1 a) Clean your face of any previous makeup. Put makeup remover or water on a cotton ball. Dab or rub in small circles to remove old makeup. • Determine your skin type and cleanse, tone and moisturize with suitable products twice daily. If you have skin problems like spots/blackheads, exfoliate your skin.

Moisturize: Using a small dab the size of a pea, gently rub in an unscented, oil-free lotion. Scented lotions can aggravate skin and cause breakouts or an allergic reaction, and oily lotions will encourage acne. • For a more natural look, use a tinted moisturizer instead. Tinted moisturizers blend in while evening out your skin tone and commonly contain SPF and moisturizers. Those with clearer skin will look best with this.

beauty step 2

Apply foundation. Before you start, it’s best to determine whether or not you’re using the right foundation colour. Get in a natural light and test the foundation to make sure it's the right colour for your skin. Dab a few marks on your cheek and angle your face different ways to see if the colour matches. • Take your finger or a sponge, dab in the foundation, and dab it on your face, blending it until it looks like your skin tone. Be sure to go underneath your jaw line; if you stop at the edge of your face, there will be a clear line where the foundation ends. • If you have bags or discoloration under your eyes, make three dots on the line of the circles under your eyes. Blend it gently using your ring finger

step 3 Use concealer on dark or red spots. Make sure this is the EXACT same colour as your skin. When you apply the concealer, do so directly on the spot and not around it. This is to avoid a halo effect and emphasis of the spot. Optionally set with beige powder. * Be careful not to overdo it on the concealer; you only need enough to cover the spot.

step 4

Apply Blush. If you were not happy with bronzer, you can apply blush instead. Cream blush generally works better than powder because it gives you a dewy look and lasts longer. Using a champagne-tinted cream blush, rub a little on your ring finger and blend onto your cheekbones. Note that you should not apply both blush and bronzer; choose one.

step 5 Add shine to your lips. If you are not a fan of heavy coloured lipsticks, apply lightly tinted ones. It will add comfort and moisture to the lips and at the same time provides a lasting stain of colour. A better choice during this humid season.

Carla's Make Up Tips To Achieve a Trendy Look: 1 Most of the time, pale pink lipstick and blush don't flatter dark hair and complexions. Women with dark black hair should play with richer colours of makeup instead; on our model I used dark lipstick with the same lip liner colour on her lips. 2 I emphasized her eyes with a strongly pigmented shadow, smudged eyeliner and two coats of dark black mascara. 3 As for eyebrows, I used one shade lighter than hair colour to soften the face. 4 I applied a hint of warm pink blush on the apples of the cheeks. 5 For the face, I used two shades of foundation to unify her skin colour, and also used highlighter on the apple of her cheeks, giving her a bright look.

Get a Rock Solid Stomach

By Bayview 26 Wellness Spa at Mรถvenpick Tower & Suites Photography Jessie Palanca

Strengthening your entire core is not only crucial for sculpting a flat stomach, but these muscles also provide support for the entire body in everyday movements, reduce back pain, and improve posture. This exercise will support the spine from all angles with a variety of moves that challenge your stability, balance, and rotational strength. Use an exercise ball to increase intensity for workouts that target your abs, glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves.

three If you do the moves two to ek, non-consecutive days a we e enc you'll notice a flat-out dif fer in just 30 days.

Crunches on the Swiss Ball Swill Ball crunches are great for targeting the deep fibers of the abdominal wall. The increase in overload over both the regular and feet elevated crunches comes from the fact that you are getting a pre-stretch on the abs. This is not possible when you are lying on a flat surface such as the floor. The movement is performed similar to the regular floor crunch but you can either have your arms raised up perpendicular to the floor or folded across your chest. Try and shoot for 4 sets of 12 to 15 repetitions per set.

Bicycle Ab Crunch Bicycle Abs Crunch is another powerful workout to get rid of lateral abdomen flabs and get a flat abdomen. This is a modified form and similar to the reverse crunch, except that one leg is lifted at a time, resembling the pedaling action on a bicycle. Like the reverse crunch, this exercise also works on the lower abdomen muscles. Perform the exercise for 15 to 20 repetitions Do 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions each.

Pike Climb From an elbow plank position, brace abs, hold tight and pike hips up to ceiling as you press chest back towards feet. Keeping abs pulled in, lower hips back to plank position as right knee bends to the outside of right elbow. Step right foot back to plank as hips pike back up to ceiling. Next, draw left knee to left elbow as hips lower. Do 10 repetitions on each side, or 20 alternating repetitions total.

Abdominal and Side Plank Lie on your right side this time, with your left arm firmly planted along your side and your right elbow tucked under your shoulder and the arm facing forward. Slowly raise yourself up with your right arm, keeping your right elbow aligned with your right shoulder. As in the basic plank exercise, hold the position for 10 seconds initially then slowly lower yourself down starting at your hip.

Wall Bridge or Ball Bridge Lie on your back with butt against the wall, arms at your sides, knees bent, and feet planted three to four feet up wall or stability ball. Exhale and move your back off floor, keeping your shoulder blades down. Your body forms a nearly straight line from chest to knees. Hold for a deep inhale, then exhale and slowly roll back down.

Pump it up!

By Dr. Mohamud Verjee Assistant Professor- Family Medicine and DIrector- Primary Care Clerkship at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar

Protect and nourish one of the most important organs in your body – and help ensure a long, healthy life – by following these expert tips. Your heart is an incredible organ - a muscle that pumps about 100,000 times per day to transport blood and oxygen around your body to keep you alive. That adds up to a staggering three billion beats in a lifetime if you live for more than 80 years! With that amount of work to do, keeping your ticker in tip-top condition is a must. Unfortunately, poor lifestyle habits such as overeating, lack of exercise and smoking mean that heart disease is the most common cause of death worldwide – in the United States about 750,000 people have a heart attack every year, and 600,000 die from heart disease there annually. The good news is that a few simple lifestyle changes can dramatically improve the health of your heart, helping you to feel better, enjoy more active leisure pursuits and live longer.

Read on for these easy-to-follow tips from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar for a healthy heart.

1

Quit smoking. Carbon monoxide in tobacco

smoke reduces oxygen levels in your blood and damages your blood vessels. Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict, forcing your heart to work harder and raising blood pressure. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do to reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

2

Ditch unhealthy saturated fats from your diet. Eating foods high

in saturated fat like butter, lard, palm oil, coconut oil and ghee (clarified butter) can increase blood cholesterol levels, which leads to increased risk of risk of heart disease.

3 4

Up your intake of healthy fats. Omega-3

fats found in oily fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel (whether fresh or tinned) are known to be beneficial to heart health. Aim for between one and three portions of oily fish per week.

Exercise. Get your heart pumping and

blood flowing with moderate to vigorous exercise five times per week for around 30-60 minutes each session. Exercise strengthens your heart muscle, improves circulation, decreases blood pressure, reduces cholesterol and can help you lose weight, which reduces strain on your heart.

5 6 7 8 9 10

Visit your doctor. Ask for a heart checkup every year from your family physician and get your blood pressure and fasting cholesterol level checked at the same time.

Learn to de-stress. Stress is known to cause hypertension (high blood pressure), which can cause hardening and narrowing of the arteries. If you suffer from stress, talk to your doctor and find ways to relax through hobbies or time with friends and family. Add whole grains to your diet. Whole grain foods such as oats, whole grain bread and whole-wheat pasta contain fibre, which can help reduce cholesterol levels.

Know your cholesterols. Cholesterol

is divided into two main types: ‘bad’ cholesterol known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and ‘good’ cholesterol known as high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

‘Bad’ or LDL cholesterol. is found in

saturated fats like butter and lard, and in trans fats, which are used widely in the food industry in biscuits, cakes and pastries. LDL cholesterol deposits cause clogging of the arteries, restricting blood flow and potentially leading to heart attack or stroke.

'Good’ or HDL cholesterols. are

believed to ‘scour’ the walls of blood vessels, cleaning out deposits of bad cholesterols that can then be processed by the liver. Good sources of HDL cholesterols include olive oil, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, avocados, whole grains, beans, and nuts like walnuts, almonds and peanuts.

11

Exercise safely. If you’ve

had heart trouble in the past or haven’t exercised for a long time, discuss your new exercise regime with your family doctor before starting.

12 13 14 15 16

Know the risks. If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension or certain inflammatory diseases, you could be at increased risk of heart disease and should seek advice from your doctor.

Family matters. Find out if your family has a history of heart disease, particularly if any family members developed problems before the age of 55. If you fear you have a genetic predisposition to heart disease, talk to your doctor. Women are at risk, too. While men are statistically more likely than women to suffer a heart attack, heart disease is now the number one killer of women in the Western world.

Lose weight. Being overweight or obese puts added pressure on your heart and makes it more likely that you will suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Know the signs. A tightness or crushing feeling across your chest, and pain in the neck or arms, often characterizes heart attacks but symptoms can sometimes be as mild as feeling weak or short of breath. If you suspect you’ve had a heart attack, call for urgent help immediately.

17

Listen to your heart. Check your

pulse from time to time for irregularities. If you feel unusual heart flutters, racing heartbeat (tachycardia), or an unusually slow heartbeat (bradycardia) you may have heart arrhythmia and you need to see a doctor.

Most of all, remember that your heart has a difficult and crucial job to do. Take care of it and you give yourself a great chance of living to a ripe old age in good health.

If you are taking two or more dosages of insulin daily, or are suffering from other diseases, such as heart disease, it is generally advisable NOT to fast. Be sure to consult your doctors for medical advice.

FASTING Provided by Islamweb.net and baseera magazine

As the glorious month of Ramadan approaches, people with diabetes face a serious question: to fast or not to fast? Fasting can be safe for some diabetics but poses serious health risks to others and it’s critical for all diabetics to obtain medical advice. Following are some general guidelines so you know what to expect. With the advent of this month, changes in eating habits are expected, such as refraining from eating and drinking for long hours, the numbers of meals being reduced, and changes in daily activities and routines. Therefore, a diabetic person must be mindful of these changes and their impact.

Diabetics are “advised to take one pill at the time they break their fast and another when having Suhoor. 70

ABODE July-Aug.indd 70

Keep in mind there are two types of diabetics: those who take insulin injections and those who don’t.

Considerations for diabetics who must take insulin injections Are you allowed to fast? These are patients who only need one shot daily, half an hour before the meal. Generally you can take your shot immediately at sunset and break your fast half an hour later. However, you are advised to consult your doctors frequently in the first few days at the beginning of the month, so they can decide the best dosage of insulin that suits your case and the nature of your work. You are also advised to check your level of blood sugar regularly to avoid any sudden drops.

Considerations for diabetics who are not required to take insulin injections This is a less severe category than the first type of diabetic patients, where pills are consumed to stimulate the pancreas in order to provide sufficient insulin in your body and enable you to access more energy. It is beneficial for this type of person to fast, unless you are required to take such pills throughout the day. Generally if you fit in this category, you will be advised to take one pill at the time you break your fast and another when having the predawn meal (Sohour). Some people only require one pill a day, which they can take when breaking the fast. There are other types of diabetic people whom we have not addressed, like those who are less than twenty years of age, pregnant diabetic women or those who have heart problems in addition to being diabetic. These are highly specialized cases, which require individual advice from their doctors.

Final remarks

• ALL diabetics must consult their doctors before the advent of the month to decide whether they are in a situation that permits them to fast or not. • Diabetic people must consult their doctors before the advent of the month to get the proper dosages they need during the month (if they are permitted to fast). • Diabetics should avoid exhausting themselves while fasting, especially during the last two hours of the day, as this is the time when the blood sugar level is most likely to drop. • Diabetics should get in the habit of delaying the Suhour to as close to Fajr (dawn) as possible.

ADHD Treatment is Multi-Faceted Currently, available treatments focus on reducing the symptoms of ADHD and improving functioning. Treatments include medication, various types of psychotherapy, behavioural interventions, education or training, and educational support. Usually a person with ADHD receives a combination of treatments.

Children Being Children ADHD is a mental and neurobehavioural (neurons are what stimulate impulses from the brain) disorder, affecting the way in which a person behaves. Being most noticeable in situations where fixed concentration is needed but not exhibited, particularly amongst male children, parents and teachers are most likely to pick up on the signs. Safe Surfing Protecting your child online BY Jacqueline Bodnar

The internet is an amazing tool that also opens the door to some new risks. Keep your kids safe and stay worry-free by observing these simple guidelines. The Internet has opened up a wide variety of resources for kids including games, educational material and hobby information. Unfortunately the internet has also created a new avenue for child predators. According to the USA’s National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, every year one out of every five children is sexually solicited online. Most incidents on the internet that involve children take place in chat rooms, through instant messages, emails and by misleading domain names that send kids to pornographic Web sites. Surfing the net can be a fun and invaluable tool for children if safety guidelines are followed.

The Risks According to the FBI, most of the risk children encounter online takes place in chat rooms during the evening and night hours. It’s important to talk to children about internet safety, especially regarding chat rooms and instant messaging. They need to be aware of the fact that people in chat rooms may not always be who they say they are. Someone that could be claiming to be a young female can really be an adult pedophile, there is no way to know for sure. Children also need to be taught to never exchange personal information, pictures or arrange meetings with people that contact them online. They should learn to deal with internet strangers in the same way they would handle strangers they encounter in person.

Safety Precautions Along with talking to children about internet safety, there are other measures parents can take. Consider keeping the computer in an open area in the house where activity can easily be monitored,

rather than in the child’s bedroom. Also look into the parental controls that your internet service provider offers. Most providers have controls that allow parents to monitor their child’s activity and allow restrictions on where they can go online. There are also internet filters that can be used to help keep out unwanted material while surfing as well as through email. The FBI suggests that parents maintain access to all of their child’s email so that they can monitor who they communicate with, as well as keeping an eye on and knowing each person who is on their buddy list for instant messaging.

Keeping Up Many kids know more about using the home computer and the internet than their parents do. Parents really need to become computer and internet savvy so they can show their children how to safely maneuver around the net to find what they are looking for and to be able to monitor their online activity.

Reporting Incidents Any alarming incidents involving children on the internet should be reported. When reporting the incident try to get as much information as you can, including the person’s email address or addresses to any misleading domain names. Incidents can be reported to your internet service provider, your local law enforcement agency and to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at CyberTipline.com.

Bottom Line The internet is a great resource for people of all ages but it can also be dangerous. Children need to be given rules and guidelines when using the internet and they need to be taught about the potential dangers that exist and how to protect themselves online. Following some basic rules and precautions will keep the whole family safely surfing.

Summer-ize Your Kitchen in 6 Easy Steps By Suzy Q Cacic – BetterDecoratingBible.com Photos By GPattie Tierney, Garisson Hullinger, Laura Bovard, and Andrea Brooks.

The kitchen is one room that often doesn’t get the décor attention it deserves. Brighten yours up just in time for Ramadan with these seven stunning ideas. The kitchen has always been a heart of the home - a place for family and friends to gather and cook great meals. With the days growing longer, and this being the important month of Ramadan, you’ll likely want to embrace the colourful summer season in your kitchen and dining room. With a few quick fixes, you can give your home a whole new look and prepare it for endless nights of traditional dishes, festivities and guests.

1

Mix and Match Seating – Gone are the days of matching furniture; having your home look like it came straight off the showroom floor is now a décor faux pas. It’s much more interesting when pieces are mixed together. Try using chunky upholstered chairs on either end of your dining table mixed with lighter-scale side chairs and even benches.

SUzY Q – Canadian Interior Design Writer www.betterdecoratingbible.com

2

Add flowers – Fresh cut flowers are the

best way to bring a colourful summer vibe into your home. Get creative with simple glass arrangements with your favorite blooms in the dining room, along with smaller vases along the counter. You would be surprised how much drama a few bright fuchsia flowers can bring to a room!

3

A Striking Chandelier – Great

lighting can work miracles in a space. We love 2013’s modern elegance trend that works clean lines with elegant, luxurious materials. This trend typically takes modern designs with a touch of rich, sumptuous glamour. Look for lighting fixtures with simple, modern shapes and metallic finishes accented by a touch of gold bling or cut crystals.

DIY Dessert Stands Blogger Kate Riley from Centsational Girl shows us how to transform your old china into cute dessert stands to display all kinds of goodies!

4

Wallpaper your Ceiling – Placing lovely wallpaper above your head will add texture and warmth, and is the perfect way to create an element of surprise in a bland room. If you are looking to get a little creative this month, consider a bright floral wallpaper to welcome the summer season in your home. Choose colours and patterns from a colour scheme that is already established in the room to make sure the walls, furniture, and ceiling seamlessly flow into one another.

5

Consider Adding Rugs – An energetic

rug can make all the difference for summer in your kitchen or dining room. Patterned Suzani rugs have been a big hit these past few years and bring endless energy and life into a space. If you are looking for a durable rug to withstand a high traffic area such as the kitchen, purchase an outdoor rug. It already has heavy-duty qualities that withstand wear, tear, and spills.

6

Go Big with Artwork – Instead

of grouping small photos and artwork together; invest in an oversized piece of art you love. This trick can work wonders in a room that is lacking colour, or if you just don’t have the time to paint or accessorize a room. A bold, colourful painting that covers up a large portion of the wall makes a dramatic first impression. Consider making this painting your focal point by aligning it with the head of the table and making it that “wow” factor you’ve been longing for.

What you need: Miscellaneous stemware and desert plates, household silicone sealant, frosted glass spray paint, coloured spray paint, paper doilies. How to: Centre your stemware on top of your plate. Prime your china with frosted spray paint and, let it dry for 10 minutes. Make sure you have a clean ring between the glass and the plate, as silicone doesn’t stick to spray paint. Spray paint 2-3 coats of your coloured paint (we chose Real Orange and Berry Pink). Once dry, apply a good layer of the silicone sealant around the edge of the ring where there is no paint. Lay the rim of stemware right on top and let is try for about 12 hours. Voilà! • Remember, your stands are completely hand washable, and make sure to use layers of paper doilies, as contact between food and spray paint is not recommended!

Design Basics:

How to “Decorate” Less

and Get Better

Results By Patrice Janel Photography by Naim Chidiac

Are you frustrated with your efforts at home decorating? ABODE posed this dilemma to Master Designer Perla Lichi, who has professionally designed homes at all price ranges in many different parts of the world. Here’s her advice on decorating less and getting more.

Perla Lichi

Bold Colour Dining Chairs Once you are confident in your colour decisions, add a bold punch of colour. Since the dining side chars are upholstered, they can be reupholstered in a different colour for a quick change to your décor.

Neutral Scheme Bright Pillows Selecting good pieces of furniture in neutral colours enables you to add decorative pillows in colours and patterns that enhance your theme. You can easily change them from time to time for a completely different look.

Invest in a few good pieces of furniture. Don’t furnish your home with spur-ofthe-moment purchases. If you simply accumulate pieces of furniture over the years, there is almost no way the result can look “well decorated.” And more importantly, you should consider large pieces of furniture as an investment in the future. Perla Lichi says that in the case of furniture, it’s like everything else. You get what you pay for. Buying furniture with good frames, quality upholstery, and generally good construction from a reliable manufacturer is the key. These major items in your home will give you continuity over the years without the need to replace them and you can change your décor by simply changing the pillows.

Select at least one piece of large wall art. Most people are too timid when deciding on art for their walls. Making a bold statement with a very large piece of art is a good way to do less decorating for better results. Of course, you must have a wall to dedicate to this art. And most importantly make it something that you absolutely love. The art serves as a dramatic focal point and you can balance out the room with the furnishings. You could, then, in your shopping or in your travels, invest in other pieces of large art and hang a different one every season! This will give you and your family a nice change and your guests will love it too!

USE CARPET AS COLOUR GUIDE Perla Lichi suggests selecting an area rug and using it as a guide to select your room colours. There are thousands of different shades of white and just selecting the correct shade of white is difficult. Matching the colour to the hue of your carpet will keep your colour selections on track.

ABODE July-Aug.indd 83

décor Chic Area Rug

Don’t trust your own colour choices.

Here is a more colourful example of how to use an area rug as a guide in colour selection. Note how almost all the area rug colours are repeated in this living room design.

Spend a lot of time eliminating clutter.

Study Design Basics.

Most people have too much clutter and too few decorative accessories. Eliminating the inevitable clutter in your home is a great first step toward decorating less for better results. Enlist the help of every member of your family for this task. Buy furniture with shelves or cabinets and lots of storage supplies. Once everything has a place and members of your family know where things are supposed to go, it will be easier to maintain an uncluttered home.

“Taking this course,” Perla Lichi emphasizes, “you will go into much greater detail on the various aspects of interior design, and it will give you confidence. Design Basics is a survey course about the profession of interior design and is also a good investment for those who may be thinking about design as a career, or for anyone who wants to decorate less and achieve better, more professional results.

SIMPLE UNCLUTTERED SYMMETRY A simple symmetric arrangement looks great. And there is no clutter.

© Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2013

Trust the experts. Interior colour selection is more than just picking your favorite colours. Designers spend years perfecting and understanding colour theory and it is very easy to make incorrect choices. Designer Perla Lichi suggests you “trust the experts” by first selecting a multi-colour area rug or an upholstery fabric with a pattern in different colours. First, make sure that either choice works well in your room. Using this rug or fabric as a guide, you can now select wall colours that work with them and your colour selection should blend perfectly. You will still have many choices to make as you match or select different hues. But using colours that professional product designers have put together in the area rug or patterned fabric will give you confidence in your selections. Ms. Lichi still recommends painting a small swatch of the new colour or colours in your room and living with them for a day or so to ensure you are happy with the results before painting the entire room.

A PAINTER’S

LIFE…

Photography Jessie Palanca

ABODE met with Angelo, an inspiring local artist, who lives and breathes art! He works with Forum Design, an affiliated company of the Ahmed Hassan Bilal group. He is available for corporate and private commissions. Learn more about him here!

Where do you find inspirations for your painting? A: My inspirations come from various sources: nature, the environment, a deep rooted appreciation of beauty, people, cultures, new ideas, but most importantly I am inspired by my passion and desire to create something truly unique, something which can be spectacular, entertaining, thought-provoking or educational. Every time I place a brush in my hand and start to paint I feel a connection to my work, I always want my art to leave an impression with the person viewing it, I want my art to stir emotions and connect to each person on a spiritual level.

What projects are you working on now? A: My most recent prestigious commission was for the Dutch

Royal Family, specifically for the inauguration of King WillemAlexander & Queen Maxima coronation. I also held a public show of my most notable horse paintings at the Equestrian Centre in Al-Samariya. This event was graced by HE Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani. My commercial "pop" art currently hangs in the newest branch of a famous Asian restaurant chain, Chowking, located in Dar-Al-Salam Mall in Abu Hamour. Currently I am working on a new collection due to be showcased at selected venues in Doha during the month of December.

Are you looking to expand in new areas? A: As an artist I am always absorbing new and fresh elements in the world of art, I don't want to be contained or stereotyped and therefore I actively seek out different methods in medium and style. As for new areas, I want to cater to a wider group both locally

and internationally. I have recently aligned myself with "artist rising" (www.art.com), which is a new world wide art website designed to showcase fresh and unique art works from all over the globe.

Your love for art manifested at a very early age. How has your work developed in all these years? A: As a child my toys were mainly composed of pens, paper and scissors, you could say my passion for art started then. In high school, I began professionally by commissioning portraits. Studying for my Bachelor of Fine Arts finally enabled me to concentrate on and perfect my unique style of portraiture. I am fortunate to possess a natural talent that has been honed and I can now produce art work in the fields of realism, abstract, landscape and still-life. I always strive to try to create something different, something extraordinary and that passion has never left me.

Your creations are very successful in Doha, but are becoming very popular abroad too. How do you feel about it? A: I am very happy. I am also very aware that working from Doha has given me the chance and opportunity to share my art with such a diverse range of people and cultures. For any artist it is important to be known and appreciated ... it is gratifying to the soul. This sense of recognition to a genuine artist like me, is like having air to breathe. VIP clients are commissioning you on a regular basis. Who are they and what are they looking for? A: You must understand that with most VIPs, privacy is of the upmost importance. However I can say that my client list includes politicians, celebrities, socially high-profile people, both local and international. Most are referred to me via word of mouth, which

is in itself a compliment to my work. Most recently, I completed a commission to celebrate the inauguration of the newly crowned King and Queen of Holland.

Your artwork also caters for corporate and commercial projects. How would you differentiate the two? A: I am fortunate that my "pop" art series has been commissioned for use in corporate and commercial projects. The corporate artworks are mainly destined for offices and retail buildings, while artworks for commercial projects are for restaurants, hotels, spas, and other establishments. And whilst my involvement in these art markets further showcases my diversity of talent, I am not a purely commercial artist. A commercial artist is someone who produces artworks for the sole purpose of generating revenue. They can do mass production of artworks and these

can dilute the very heart and soul of the artist. I am far from such. I create unique artworks, I do not simply re-produce them. As a genuine artist I'm blessed with versatility, I can easily move between realism to impressionism to abstract, and that alone makes me unique in my field.

How do you see your work developing in the next few years? A: We all continuously learn things as we go through life, my art follows the same path. I continually evolve daily, influenced by all that I can see, touch, hear and smell ... art, my art is the very core of my life. I seek new ideas, fresh concepts, new inspirations and my aim is to try and reach out to the wider art market. Sometimes when I people talk to me, they see me lost in my thoughts, they may mistake my silence for shyness ... but the reality is that at that very moment, I am already creating their artwork in my mind. 87

“I like everything fresh, yes the preparation will take time but I am serving the best to my guests,” beams Chef Emre. Originally from Turkey, he draws inspiration from his homeland and injects his signature Mediterranean flavours from all his travels. Here he talks about how he’s transforming his food creations to something magical and addictive (at least for many of us!).

Where did you train to become a chef and how difficult was your training? A: I studied Tourism and Hotel Management in Antalya and trained at Marco Polo Hotel, Antalya. I prepared myself for the inevitable, as I believe when you love what you do, that increases your potential to endure any challenge.

When did you decide you wanted to become a professional cook? A: During my training there was an incident where I made a minor mistake. The chef who was shadowing me asked me if I really wanted to become a chef and if my answer was yes, then I should get back to work right then and there and that’s what I did. The person who inspired me to be a professional chef is my uncle. He is very famous and he is my role model.

Chef Emre Gok

in one’s career one must truly love what you do. These three elements combined together always keep my approach fresh, creative and exciting.

What is your favourite kitchen gadget? A: The chef’s tong. This piece of equipment makes me more confident, for it assists me in all my cooking. It is very versatile tool which makes me work efficiently, speedily and [it’s] good in handling food, especially the tiny ingredients. These are very important in the kitchen.

What is the most difficult dish you have to work with? A: The Turkish dessert Kazandibi can become a challenge. It’s a milk pudding which has a caramelized base on the top. That’s something that keeps you constantly wondering if you should cook it longer or less.

How do you keep your food exciting? How do you handle pressure? A: I have three critical rules. Number A: When pressure and stress hits I

one is taste. Number two is the presentation. The third element is a love for the craft. I believe to excel

do not let pressure overcome me; I keep myself focused in all that I do, in doing so I can give my very best.

Romain Meder

Romain Meder, Executive Chef, has been entrusted by Alain Ducasse to open IDAM restaurant in Doha and brings his rich array of experiences to the IDAM experience. He is sharing with ABODE one of his succulent recipes for you to try at home!

Try this gourmet fish recipe!

Marinated Bonite fish from the Arabian Gulf, lemon and gold caviar For 4 persons. Preparation: 1 ½ hour Level: Intermediate

Ingredients:

• 600 grams of whole king fish filet • 40 grams of caviar Marinade: • Juice of 3 lemons • 1 piece of lime • 1 small shallot chopped • 1 diced preserved lemon • 1 tea spoon of fresh ginger cut in thin sticks • 2 soup spoons of extra virgin olive oil • Crushed black pepper • Rock salt Aromatic mix: • Minced fresh thyme • Rosemary • Rock salt Tamarind paste: • 4 pieces of tamarind seeds • Sugar

Procedure:

Prepare the fish filet: After removing the skin (you can have it done by your merchant), slice it lengthwise in large stripes. Sprinkle the aromatic mix on the strips and leave it covered for 20 minutes in the fridge. Prepare the marinade: On medium heat fire, cook the lemon juice until reducing to syrup texture, then whisk while adding the olive oil. Add the preserved lemon, chopped shallot, ginger sticks, salt and pepper, and set in the fridge. When cool, add the fish stripes and let it marinating until it gets white on every side. Take out the fish and save in the fridge. Prepare the tamarind paste: Remove the pulp from the tamarind seeds, add a bit of water and boil it for 1 minute. Pass it through a thin strainer and keep the paste. Finalize the dish: After the marinating is complete, dice the fish in big equal pieces. In 4 small white plates, and using a large ring, divide and set the 4 fish portions in regular discs, and glaze with some leftover of marinade juice. Decorate the sides of the plates with some tamarind paste hints, and put a 10 grams dome of Caviar on each fish discs. Serve immediately.

Jordan’s capital is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Plan your visit and stay in one of the most luxurious hotels in town to make the most of it. A quick visit to Amman’s iconic landmarks are a must, but also some precious relaxation time is on the card, especially if you are planning your stay at one of the most sophisticated hotels on offer, such as Four Seasons Amman.

what to see The capital is a buzzy metropolis nowadays, originally built on seven hills and now spanning more than nineteen. The old downtown area is surely the main highlight of the city, along with its characteristic old souk, the King Hussein Mosque, ancient monuments, museums and the famous Roman Theatre.

The hotel But after all this sightseeing it’s time to sit back and relax! Four Seasons Amman sits on the highest hills and therefore offers a great view across the whole white city. At night especially

you will be able to enjoy a breathtaking view of the town from your own airy and well equipped bedroom. The usual exceptional and friendly service of the Four Seasons staff will make the whole difference during your stay, from an attentive concierge desk, which will be able to advise you and arrange your excursions in the whole of Jordan, to the gentle waiter serving you the best fresh juices available at the gorgeous breakfast buffet. Provence France

Take a break from reality

Fields of Provence

and one of Les Grand Chefs Relais & Châteaux, boasting a Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant. It sat amongst a gorgeous five-hectare park, surrounded with olive groves.

The adventure:

La Bastide Saint-Antoine

The route (En route) Sometimes the heaviness of life can get to us and a change of scenery is much needed. Therefore, I decided to hit the road and make my way to an exotic place…embarking on an adventure through France’s countryside – destination Provence! Renting a car from AVIS in Paris that only cost 50€

in Grasse

per day, I set a plan to complete this adventure in three days. Starting from Paris I drove through several cities taking the motorway A6/7/8, which took approximately eight and a half hours. I checked into the five-star La Bastide Saint-Antoine in Grasse. This was a unique property located on the Côte d’Azur: an 18th century country manor

It is a real challenge to describe this wonderful region that is Provence. I could describe the 2,500 years of the region’s immensely rich history, but I won’t. I could describe the region’s fabulous architecture, but I won’t. I could write reams of pages about the shores, the little creeks, the crystal clear turquoise water, the beautiful Mediterranean weather, the hills so crowded with olive trees and cypress that they look like an immense garden, but I won’t. I could list all the painters, poets, sculptors, writers that came to Provence and got inspired by it, but I won’t. I won’t first and foremost because you would not survive the boredom of such

More important, I won’t because at a distance, even the sum of all those elements won’t help you understand the essence of Provence. It is unique because once you mix all those elements together, they seem to influence each other and create something that is uniquely wonderful. Indeed from buildings and cities to the shores passing by Van Gogh’s masterpieces, the same spirit penetrates. Which spirit is that, you ask? What makes Provence so special? What is that essence? Well, I can’t really tell, describe objectively in words. I can only say that Provence has this incredible capacity to liberate our senses. Everything that we heard, saw, touched and tasted felt different, never tasted, and brand new. Being there, I felt intensely alive and happy, a bit like a kid for whom everything becomes the “first time”. The immense beauty is soultouching. It cannot be conveyed, but should definitely be experienced. I cannot guarantee that this spirit will touch you in any way.

The question is whether you can be receptive to what Provence has to offer. But here are my unique travel tips:

1)

Upon arrival in Provence, free your mind of the everyday heaviness that keeps us all so busy: work, obligations, habits.

2) Don’t overload yourself by making it a regional history lesson, scheduling too many museums and landmarks every single day.

3) Experience Provence by drinking it in the moment. If your experience is like mine, this spectacular environment will help you put aside your everyday life and you just may begin to face the essential questions of our existence.

For more information VISIT www.visitprovence.com www.turkishairlines.com

For me, Provence was a spiritual place. Cradled in such beauty, humans are not afraid to face the big questions. And the people of Provence seem to have found an answer to some of those essential questions. The answers are things like joy and beauty, which are found everywhere in this region, and have the ability to touch millions of visitors like me. So what will you take back from a trip in Provence? Well if you give it a chance, I would guess almost certainly serenity…but maybe even a whole new perspective on life.

Real Partnership on the Rise Coordinated by Marlynne Mallari- Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca

Germany is one of the powerful countries in the world and its Ambassador in Qatar is one of the sincerest people you’ll come across with. ABODE had a chance to get to know Her Excellency Angelika Storz-Chakarji.

people Within moments of being greeted by the Ambassador, we were struck by her exceptional and genuine charisma. We discussed many interesting subjects from national products, family and political and social issues. Here are highlights from the interview.

Last May, the Munich Security Conference (Core Group Meeting) was held in Doha, topics spanned peace talks to energy and sustainable solutions, which need to be addressed by high ranking officials. How has this conference strengthened the relationship between Germany and Qatar? A: This meeting took place for the first time in Doha. The forum grants the opportunity of a high-level exchange between key stakeholders of both our countries as well as international experts under Chatham House rules. Meetings like this are very important to create personal links between high-level decision makers – a central factor in international relations.

one of Qatar’s visions and that is to improve life for everyone. How are you linking your initiatives/plans to continually support Qatar’s vision? A: Both Germany and Qatar aim at creating diversified and innovative business sectors. In order to achieve this, an open society and a knowledge based economy in which creativity and innovation can flourish, is needed. We are interested in sustainable German-Qatari cooperation in all fields. Real partnership and trust can only be developed over time. Therefore, we aim at interconnecting our societies even more, particularly through Memorandums of Understanding in the fields of research, science and technology, culture, museums and conservations and archaeology – just to name a few. Also, the hospitality and health sectors are key fields for us – as are transport and infrastructure.

Health is regarded as a top priority for anyone. Can you Qatar is one of the fastest growing tell us more about “Health economies in the world. receive for treatment every year, are able to benefit from these standards.

One particular asset of our health care system is the close connection between research and innovation and treatment in our university hospitals. We are happy to welcome Qatari patients for diseases such as diabetes and complex surgeries, but of course we also welcome numerous Qatari citizens in our spa towns for preventive and after surgery care.

Now that we’ve reached the 21st century, many women are taking huge steps in leadership. In your opinion and experience, what characteristics should a woman possess to break boundaries in male-dominated industries. A: I am happy that Germany has women in leadership positions – first and foremost of course our Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel; voted by several magazines as one of the most influential women in the world. Not only does Dr. Merkel set an example for young women that there are no boundaries to excel, her example clearly stands for the changes German society has undergone in only a few decades. Apart from a framework which encourages and supports women in having both a family and pursuing a career, women need to be courageous, well educated, show perseverance and professionalism in order to break boundaries which do still exist.

Fatima Al Kuwari By Sandee Thompson Images by Ooredoo

Fatima Al Kuwari is a force to be reckoned with. Armed with community spirit and a contagious enthusiasm for all things Ooredoo, Ms. Al Kuwari has spearheaded numerous projects over the years, first as a QTel employee and most recently as the Director of Public and Community Relations with Ooredoo. She is passionate about the field of telecommunications and the various roles she has played within the Ooredoo company itself and she has the ability to enthuse those around her about the subject.

s. Al Kuwari received her B.S in Computer Science from the University of Qatar and her MBA from the University of Liverpool. She began her career as a Product Marketing Specialist with Qtel in 2006, where her focus was on the technical side of the business, and she eventually moved into the customer care side of the business. This has allowed her the opportunity to design, develop and participate in community programs such as Refaq, which organizes volunteers to refurbish the homes of poorer members of the community and the Ooredoo Marathon. One of her earliest projects was bringing BlackBerry to Qatar when she was a QTel trainee and seeing the project through from beginning to end. She claimed that while young Qataris are delighted that she did so, parents are not as happy about the BlackBerry coming to Qatar! Ms. Al Kuwari was quick to assure me that Ooredoo has put technical safety measures in place so that the Qatari telecommunications market is safe and secure and has filters which block spam, viruses and the ability for hackers to interfere with their service, demonstrating the care and respect her company has for its clients. When asked about her favourite project thus far in her career, Ms. Al Kuwari was reluctant to select only one. Instead, she said she has two favourites at the moment: the Ooredon marathon, which took place earlier this year, and the company’s recent rebranding. Al Kuwari said the marathon gave the staff the opportunity to both give back to the community and to reach out to it by encouraging a healthy lifestyle at the same time. Staff were involved in the marathon themselves and all monies were donated to the Qatar Red Crescent after the event. She participated with her family and said it was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the community she serves. The six-month long rebranding process gave her the with the opportunity to be involved in a project of a vast scope. Ooredoo, which means “I want”, is now in North Africa, South East Asia, as well as the Middle East and they continue to expand. Given the company is seventy

percent male, the chance to be part of such projects and to be the ‘face of the company’ has been, Al Kuwari says, the opportunity of a lifetime.

Q&A

in 30 seconds

1. Key to team success? “You cannot add value if you are not happy in your team”.

We spoke at length about young women entering the workforce, especially a male-dominated area such as technology, and when I asked what advice she had for female graduates of technical programs such as Computer Science, she said “Don’t think gender”. She advised that young people, female and male, look for professional opportunities that spark their interest and get involved. “Take your job seriously and be passionate about what you do,” she said. She is living proof of her own words. Her passion and enthusiasm for the company and field she works in has been a driving force in rebranding from QTel to Ooredoo. Fatima Al Kuwari is now the face of Ooredoo and I am certain this is because of her belief in what she is doing and in her ability to convey her passion to those people around her. She said the fast-paced, dynamic structure of her job and workplace means she is never bored and this too seems to be her key to job satisfaction.

working with a productive, healthy team firsthand. What does Fatima think is the biggest challenge of having such a high profile job? Prioritizing her life by making sure there is balance between her home and her work. After all, being passionate about something does not mean you have to be consumed by it. It means you take opportunities that come your way whether you are excited by it or, as she said, “terrified”…and you do it anyway.

She encouraged young Qataris to apply for intern positions in the field of telecommunications, and Ooredoo specifically, so they can experience

I personally think that Fatima Al Kuwari should be given a new moniker – role model and mentor for young Qataris. What a national gem she is.

2. Advice to young people entering the work force? “Be passionate about what you do”. 3. Key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle? “Find a balance in life”.

I love what I do experience in every single hotel are vital: “There are not enough pins within Africa,” he muses. “The opportunities are enormous – we are continuing to develop heavily in the Middle East, we’re opening several locations in Russia, and we are not done with Europe by any means. With opportunities, though, also come challenges – chiefly to preserve our entrepreneurial spirit, dynamic leadership and the special qualities of each of our properties. We can’t take what we have achieved in the past for granted, even as we blast into the future.” Many new Four Seasons openings are in the pipeline and Mr. Norton is very proud of all of them: Four Seasons Resort Dubai, on Jumeirah Beach is scheduled for September 2014. The Dubai property will be a show-stopper, a proper resort directly on the beach with 240 rooms. Other exciting new projects include Madrid, Casablanca, a Resort within Walt Disney in Orlando, Shenzhen and St. Petersburg to name a few.

A REAL GLOBETROTTER BY Francesca Moser

ABODE interviewed Christopher Norton, Four Seasons’ President Hotel Operations EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) to discover how he juggles his busy life and career constantly travelling around the world…while still looking immaculate! We met Mr. Norton in the glamourous tea room of the Four Seasons Doha. He was visiting our city and the Middle East for few days for various meetings and to catch up with his staff. He is a very charming man, very well dressed, gentle in all his movements and very easy to talk to. But above all he is a very proud man of his brand and company. The Four Seasons is a Canadian-based luxury Hotel chain, founded in 1960 by the Canadian businessman Isadore Sharp, currently

boasting around 89 properties all over the world, all recognized as among the top luxury hotels worldwide. Mr. Norton first joined Four Seasons in 1989 as an executive assistant manager in Bali and has since travelled the world for his company. Last September he was appointed President Hotel Operations EMEA. In this prestigious position he oversees a significant slice of the Four Seasons global hotel and resort operation. His aims of expansion and enriching the spa

With so many responsibilities and projects at once how does Mr. Norton relax and enjoy a normal life with his family? Simple, he absolutely loves his job and does everything with a real passion. He started his career in hospitality as a teen in his native Zurich and has grown day after day until reaching the real top of the ladder. He is currently based in Geneva, where he lives in the actual Four Seasons Hotel and he travels regularly worldwide, so we ask him: “How do you manage to attend all your meetings as impeccable as you are when jet lagged?” and he revealed his tricks: no food or alcoholic drinks on the plane and always travel light, hand luggage makes travelling so much easier and faster! Obviously he is a master at this, after all these years of jetting around. After meeting Mr. Norton personally it is very easy to understand how this luxurious hotel chain can deliver such outstanding service with no fail: with this inspiring and still humble man at the top of it all, who closely guides and trains his staff, is no surprise to see that Four Seasons has been ranked one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For" by Fortune for years. They must do something right and certainly it shows!

ABODE July-Aug.indd 126

6/27/13 4:10 PM

Your base is in Abu Dhabi and you teach in Dubai. What brought you to the Middle East? A: I got an offer to do several shows between Dubai, Doha and Kuwait for a month. All of the sudden I started to get more inquiries and I had to extend my stay in the country. I realized that it was a good place to expand the flamenco and Spanish culture.

Is Flamenco becoming more popular in the Gulf? How do you promote it? A: Little by little, it is increasing. More expatriates who need to feel at home and also the locals are loving it. We have much Arabic influence in Andalucía, even the flamenco itself. I try to promote our Culture in every show, performance or event with my dance and teaching.

What happen in your workshops? Are they open to women and men? A: My students are from all different countries, all of them are people really passionate for the Spanish culture so they work very hard to reach a good level. Of course [the courses are] open for men, too. such as classical Spanish dance, contemporary dance and flamenco.

FLAMENCO TIME! Raquel Castilla, a professional Flamenco dancer, who recently relocated to the Middle East to teach the Spanish signature dance. Read more about her passion for dance, Andalucia and her workshops in the Gulf. Flamenco is the signature dance of Spain. When did you start dancing? A: I started dancing when I was 9 in a small dancing school and I began my career in the Real conservatory of Dance in Madrid at the age of 12. As a dedicated dancer with a great passion I continued to study under different masters in order to specialize in different styles of dance,

ABODE July-Aug.indd 127

I won the prestigious contest choreography and dance of Madrid, which gave me many opportunities. After that I started to work with different Spanish Companies of Dance, dancing in Spain and worldwide.

You performed all over the world. Do you have any upcoming tour? A: In the last 15 years I danced with the Company of Carmen Mota in a spectacular stage in China, Lebanon, Turkey, Seoul, Italy, Circus -Teather in Switzerland and distinguished events such as the Grand Prix in Monaco and the Millennium Gala in Berlin. I also made many television appearances in Spain, including performances alongside famous stars like Ricky Martin, Chayanne, Julio Iglesias and many, many more.

Do you have any plans to expand your school/courses in Doha? A: I would like to. I had the opportunity to perform there and I saw many people interested in learning flamenco, therefore I will prepare some workshops and events soon.

How do you juggle your personal life with your dedication to flamenco? A: My life is dance and has always been like this for me. It’s really natural to me, so I go where I can dance.

How would you describe flamenco in three words and why should readers join your activities? A: Passion, feelings, respect. Dance is therapy; it helps to synchronize body, mind and soul through movement. Flamenco requires loads of techniques, but I like to see how my students enjoy it, feel great and get the best out of themselves while dancing. Let’s Dance!

10 Things That Define True Professionalism By Danielle Duttenhofer, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Global Women Qatar

One of the many definitions of the word professional reads “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person /one who engages in an activity for gain or as a means of livelihood". Being a professional is a bit like being respected. Respect is something you earn, you don't demand it and you shouldn't have to ask for it; others give it to you. It’s somewhat like being an artist – you create a work, but whether it is called "art" is up to other people to decide; you do the work and leave the labels to others. Being considered a professional is about learning your craft, doing a good job, and letting others apply the label "professional" to your work or to you. Essentially what you are trying to achieve is a kind of success factor that differentiates good from great. Reviewing EQ journals and blogs and web searches about true professionalism, we’ve concluded that the majority of people would have the following 10 key factors:

1. The urge to learn This is something which constantly pushes us ahead, out of our comfort zone. Even if we err along the way the overall result is positive and as time passes we get better and better. We grow to the point when someone thinks about us when asked the question: do you know of any professional?

2.

The drive to always do things better today than you did yesterday Learning is part of that, however, learning alone does not improve things. Knowledge, when not used, is still useless. So, what makes a great

professional is someone who does enjoy the successes (and failures) of today, and has the drive to do even better tomorrow. This constant striving for improvement requires discipline and focus.

3. Avoidance of excess A professional who wants to be taken seriously does not drink too much, take drugs, eschew exercise, eat too much (on a regular basis), or skip sleep. That would take away from your ability to do get up every day and produce consistently excellent work.

4. A refusal to wing it If someone asks for your professional opinion, you know they are asking for a carefully thought out view based on years of education, training, focus and collected wisdom. If you are going into a meeting where your professional knowledge is needed, prepare.

5. An ability to resist the seven deadly sins Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride. If you think you know everything, you are not open to new ideas and a fool. If you’re greedy and lazy, no one will want to do business with you; if you are envious, you will be small minded and if you tend to lose your temper, you will act against your own best interests. None of this is the behaviour of a professional.

128

ABODE July-Aug.indd 128

people

6. The ability to shut out private problems You must be able to shut out problems in other areas of your life and deliver great results even when everything else feels like it is falling apart.

7.

The ability to learn from your mistakes and those of others You need to be able to admit when you are wrong and fix it. If someone else is doing something better than you, stop doing what you are doing and adopt a new and better way of doing things.

8. The ability to accept criticism You need the ability to accept criticism and the wisdom to know when not to accept criticism, because in your professional opinion, you are right.

9.

The willingness to be held responsible to a higher standard of behaviour and knowledge than an amateur There is no use whining that you didn’t know such and such if, within your industry, you, as a professional, should have known.

Professionals at a Glance: * Identify and satisfy customer needs. * Know their trade. * Meet or exceed expectations whenever possible. * Deliver on promises made. * Communicate clearly, concisely, thoroughly, and accurately. * Adhere to high values and principles. * Are humble and generous in praise of others. * Help their peers. * Thank others in a meaningful way that most benefits the recipient. * Are pleasant, even during trying times.

10. The ability to adapt Change is such an ugly word for some. We see it every day in all parts of our life at a high rate. But when we can’t control the change, we need to adapt. The people that are able to do this successfully look beyond the here and now and seize, if not create, opportunities. Being a professional is something you look forward to, strive for, but then, after years of effort, you realize that at some point you became a professional without noticing when it actually happened. It sort of happened when you were making a living at it and you felt you were doing good work that satisfied your clients and yourself… even as you were striving to continuously improve yourself.
