BOTTEGA VENETA CELEBRATES 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF KPM To commemorate the 250th anniversary of KPM, Koenigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious makers of fine porcelain, Bottega Veneta created a limited edition of its iconic Knot. The Knot is one of Bottega Veneta’s most beloved handbags, a small, rounded box clutch conceived in materials and designs ranging from the refined to the fantastical. This exquisite version is created from a combination of exotic and classical accents; starting with bronze Ayers, the front side is embellished with a unique porcelain medallion featuring hand carved angels that has been produced exclusively for Bottega Veneta, set in Oro Bruciato and surrounded by a delicate contrasting trim of brown cubic zirconia.

Salam Stores stocks this iconic brand of luggage, best known for supplying luggage to the Queen, as well as being officially used in all the James Bond films. fashion insider

ABODE met with one of the most successful fashion stylists in London:

Sasha Barrie

Here she reveals how she landed her dream job, her favourite brands and she also presents her new personal styling service to create a new look for you or simply to find the perfect gifts for your family and friends. Was working in the fashion world a childhood ambition for you? A: Yes it’s something I have wanted

Where do you usually shop for your wardrobe? A: I love A.P.C.’s simplicity, which

to do from a very young age. I studied fashion design at University in order to gain some background knowledge and once I graduated I then built up a wealth of work experience to break into the industry.

forms a lot of my staple wardrobe. I buy a lot of stuff online at places such as Net-a-Porter and Matchesfashion.com when I don’t have time to visit the stores. Other favourites include Liberty, Selfridges, Browns and Fenwick for a great selection of designer items. On the high street Cos provide stylish and simple pieces that go a long way in matching my aesthetic.

How did you start your styling career? A: I underwent internships at various titles and landed my first assisting job at Red magazine, where I stayed until I had worked my way up to fashion editor before moving on to Marie Claire, where I was Fashion Editor, and following that with a senior role at Elle UK amongst others.

You are surrounded by beautiful people in your job, but what do you appreciate the most in a person? A: Trust, punctuality, reliability and loyalty.

Do you have tips for any young women who want to be successful in fashion? A: Be prepared to work hard and gain a lot of experience as an intern, which will stand you in good stead for landing your first job. The competition is fierce and so anything that will make you stand out will benefit you in the future.

Your favourite designer and why? A: That’s a tough one, as I like different aspects of designers’ output depending on the season, though if I had to flag up a label whose output is both consistent and inspiring I would have to say Phoebe Philo at Celine. A/W 13 was a perfect example of mid-century modern made contemporary, but with her usual twists.

Any must-have for the new season? A: I am hankering over the navy and grey textured pieces at Celine, a navy slightly oversized mannish navy coat from Jil Sander (an oversized coat should be an essential purchase for A/W), the stunningly simple knee length skirts and at Chloe......I could go on!!

Describe your styling service in few words

I offer a bespoke service for a discerning clientele using my industry experience and contacts. From wardrobe overhaul and development to being able to provide a team of established hair and make-up professionals to complete the look for a special occasion.

For more information sashabarrie@me.com Tel: +44 (0) 7941092638 Twitter @sashabarrie sashabarrie.tumblr.com

What makes someone cool and seriously fashionable? A: Having your own sense of style rather than slavishly following trends.

How can you transform someone’s style? Where would you start? A: It is important to see what the person already has in their wardrobe and to see what key purchases would work with existing pieces. Whether a client is looking for a wardrobe injection or complete overhaul, it is important to know the person and their lifestyle before you can help them to dress accordingly.

Your favourite restaurant in London? A: For breakfast meetings and brunch I love the Wolseley and the Riding House Cafe and for dinner it’s got to be Roka if I’m feeling fancy, or my old local faithful, Bento Cafe in Camden.

And shopping street? A: I venture to different areas depending on the stores I want to visit, but if I had to name one it would be Marylebone High Street for its unique appeal.

Sophisticated Princess ABODE hooked up with and trading to transform the look of one lucky lady from head to toe! The result? Super chic! Feature Coordinated by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Stylist Francesca Moser Photography Jessie Palanca Make Up Artist Eric Pascual Hair Stylist Geri Galyaron Nails by Nails Boutique at Salwa Road Clothes AND SHOES by BCBG MAX AZRIA at Villaggio

Princess Vicente As a part of a very busy marketing world, she did not have time for frequent salon visits, but if she can scoot out to go and pamper herself, she revealed she’ll definitely visit an inexpensive salon. She admitted that most of the time she can’t get what she’s looking for, but thanks to AND TRADING and its professional team she achieved a great new look!

Before

Eric's Make up tips,

Lead Make Up Artist of Franck Provost 1 Naturally when the person has really sensitive skin, redness is not rare, so I applied green corrector to improve the appearance of her face. 2 To tone down dark spots I put concealer below her eye area. When applying concealer just dab it on the skin to achieve a natural look. 3 Contouring is the key to show the cheeks. Swipe a bronzer under the cheekbone, the movement should be upward. 4 To attain a natural look I used earth tone colours to bring out her natural beauty. 5 Lastly I applied a finishing mist, so her face will look fresh and hydrated.

Geri's Hair Style tips,

Hair Stylist & Colourist of Jean Louis David 1 Since her hair is very dry I needed to trim all the dryness. 2 To play down her face roundness, the cut is a modified, angled bob, giving the illusion of a slim appearance. This cut is also easy to manage; she can do wash-and-go for busy days! 3 For her hair colour, dark brown is very plain. So I played around with a lighter spectrum in blondes and reds. 4 I layered the colours to give it a little bit of an edgier look but still classy. 5 To finish off her look, I added a serum to keep her hair shiny.

B/Attitude Spa

The lucky winners of Nina Ricci and Salam's PUIG Team

Nina Ricci’s Princess Therapy

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you feel tired and down? An overhaul at the spa is the answer. Along with the winners of Nina Ricci and Salam's competition we were ushered into B/Attitude spa to experience their Moroccan Retreat.

With the schedules filling up it’s time to forget those things for an hour and a half and transform your nails from shabby to chic. If you are looking for a place where you can relax privately while technicians are doing your manicure and pedicure, Nails Boutique at Salwa is the perfect place for you. They have well-trained staff, a dazzling array of nail polishes, from plain colours to robust sparkly shades and a circular shaped room specially reserved for you for them to do the service. This is not your ordinary manicure and pedicure, the technician will ask you to sit comfortably on the cushioned chair, and then clean your feet and hands with lightly scented liquid soap followed by a heavenly massage while you inevitably doze off. Later they will shape your nails, trim, clean and they will ask you what colour of polish you prefer. After applying two coats of colour you are ready to flaunt and rock those nails!

The ambiance was inviting and the therapists accommodating. After a quick shower and application of black soap, the next stop was ten minutes in the steam room. Once our pores were opened with this deeply relaxing steam, the therapist gently scrubbed the body to get rid of any dead skin, an instant age-eraser. This was followed by an invigorating facial to take out any remaining stress of the day’s work. Finally a body moisturizer was applied to lock in moisture and keep skin supple and glowing. It’s another royal bliss, ladies!

Beauty Q&A How to do A Home Facial Facials are a great way to keep your skin young and luminous even when you can’t make it to the spa. Facials involve applying a masque and using steam. However, more than anything, a good daily skin regime is essential to keep skin looking young and healthy.

Q.

I can’t afford to go to a spa every month. How important are regular facials?

A.

Your skin shouldn’t have to suffer because you can't afford regular trips to the aesthetician, although it is a great way to take care of your skin. “I recommend that everyone take good daily care of their skin even if they can’t get a monthly facial at a spa," says Carla Tabet, Training instructor for Salam’s Perfumes and Cosmetics Division, in Doha, Qatar. She advises getting to know your skin type before starting a regime, and once you do, she recommends everyone use at least a cleanser, a daytime and night time moisturizer daily and an exfoliator several times a week. She admits that a good home facial that includes a nourishing mask, at least once a month, depending on your skin type, is a good idea. Tabet also suggests that a big part of skin care involves protection from the sun and that the products we purchase should have a minimum SPF of 15- 30 to protect the skin from sun damage.

Steps for A basic skin care routine and home facial. step 1 CLEANSING Wear your head band so no hair will be hanging while you are doing the facial. Prepare your skin by removing all traces of make-up, use a gentle cleanser. As a cardinal rule put extra care when cleaning the area around your eyes, for it is very sensitive.

step 2 TONE Toning is an essential part of cleaning. It balances the PH level of skin to better respond to the treatment. Add a few drops of toner on the facial cotton and start at the center of your face, i.e. from nose area working your way to cheek (motion should be upward).

step 3 SCRUB Scrubbing can penetrate down into the pores of your skin to give a total cleaning. Apply a dab of the scrub on five points of your face, the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Then massage it in a circular motion and remove with a splash or two of lukewarm water.

step 4 MASQUE Since scrubbing opened the pores of your skin, you need to apply a masque to close it. Set the masque evenly on your face avoiding the eye area. Application should start from the middle working your way upward your cheek. Leave for 7-10 minutes, then clean.

step 5 MOISTURIZE The skin needs to be hydrated whether it’s cold or hot season. Once you’re done with steps 1-4 your skin is ready for the moisturizer, so apply enough cream on your face. Many people believe that the more you apply the better, it’s not necessarily the case, the skin will just absorb what it needs. How do you know? After applying the moisturizer check your skin after five minutes. When it feels dry that’s the time you can add more.

step 6 SUNBLOCK When you are up for some fun under the sun! Do not forget to add sunblock, for it protects your skin from premature aging, uneven skin tone and dark spots.

Natural Beauty

super simple all natural beauty tips By Tarn de Villiers

Before you splurge on store bought products or procedures, why not try a few tricks that are available to us naturally from mother earth. Your body will be free from foreign (and sometimes harmful) substances and happy to absorb the earth’s organically given goodness.

Anti-wrinkle:

Women will go to great lengths to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on their faces. Remember, prevention is the best cure; charge up your diet by infusing these age-defying recipes!

Fat Burners:

Drop weight by eating more (of the right foods)! Grapefruit: Ken Fujioka, MD, general internist and director of the Center for Weight Management at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego, says eating grapefruit helps lower insulin in the body; “Anything that helps lower insulin can help people lose weight,” he explains. Studies at the Scripps Clinic have shown that eating half a grapefruit before every meal induces weight loss up to one pound a week! Try liquefying the fruit into juice and serve on ice for a refreshing alternative. Chocolate: If you’ve always believed chocolate to be the root of all evil, think again; 70% dark chocolate, with its high antioxidant content may help prevent the gathering of fat cells in the body. This is not to say that is okay to eat as much chocolate as you like, but little pieces in moderation can have a positive effect. Green tea: Green tea contains epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG- a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to speed up your body’s metabolism, triggering weight loss. Together with the caffeine that is found in green tea, ECGC works by stimulating the central nervous system and releasing fat into the blood stream, so that the body can use the fat as fuel. Start by switching your regular cuppa with a cup of green tea and results should follow (or rather drop away) soon!

Wrinkle-Fighting Salad This energy-boosting fruit salad is packed with antioxidants, which protect the skin from sun damage and boost circulation to help deliver essential nutrients to skin. Eat it for breakfast to start your day on a beautiful note.

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup fresh blueberries • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries • 1 kiwi, peeled and chopped • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds • 1/2 cup organic orange juice • 1 handful of chopped walnuts

Procedure:

• Combine first four ingredients in a small bowl. Pour the orange juice over the mixture and sprinkle with the walnuts.

Natural Teeth Whiteners:

Before going under the laser or using harmful chemicals to bleach your teeth, try a natural whitening technique first

Lip Plumpers:

Injecting lip fillers such as collagen or Botox often results in an artificial look, and if you’re not happy with the result, the procedure is irreversible. Here are a few tricks to try at home… Shine: Using science to give our lips a rounder appearance does not necessarily have to involve injecting needles! Shiny surfaces reflect light, creating the illusion of a larger surface area. Rub natural fruit and plant oils on your lips to create a shiny look that will moisturize too. Moisture itself helps make your lips appear fuller because it means the skin cells are hydrated and full of liquid as opposed to dry and shrunken.

TIP:

Mix one teaspoon aloe vera gel to half a teaspoon coconut oil and add a drop of vitamin E oil. Keep in a small container and use regularly as lip balm to maximize and moisturize your lips. Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a natural lip plumper! It works by stimulating blood flow under the skin, creating that tingly feeling associated with most commercial lip plumping glosses. Moisten a teaspoon of ground cinnamon powder with water and rub onto the lips before applying your lip colour. Cinnamon oil (found at most health food stores) also works a charm, adding a glossy effect while plumping your pout, not to mention that lovely cinnamon scent that will be left lingering)!

TIP: Spice up a bottle of unscented, clear lip-gloss by unscrewing the lid and adding 7-8 drops of cinnamon oil. The result will be a naturally plumping, gorgeous smelling, and glossy pout-potion!

Strawberries and bicarbonate of soda: According to Dr. Adina Carrel, a dentist in private practice at Manhattan Dental Arts in New York, strawberries combined with bicarbonate of soda create what is known as malic acid, which acts an astringent, buffing off unwanted stains caused from coffee, curries, nicotine etc. Simply mix a ratio of one crushed strawberry to one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and brush gently with your toothbrush after leaving the mixture on your teeth for five minutes. “Be careful not to use this too often, though, as the acid could damage the enamel on your teeth,” advises Carrel. A once per week routine should achieve noticeable results. Avoid Sodas: It is common knowledge that sugary sodas can be harmful to one’s teeth, as sugar is one of the main causes of tooth decay. However, sugar-free sodas are thought to be equally as damaging. According to Dr. Pankaj P. Singh, founder and CEO of Arch Dental Associates in New York City, sodas contain harmful acids such as citric and phosphoric acid that cause abrasion on the enamel of your teeth, resulting in an undesirable yellowing effect. Opt for 100% natural fruit juices and water instead, or try switching to sparkling water: it has that same fizzy effect but without the acid or sugar!

TIP:

Add lemon slices, mint leaves and pomegranate seeds to your sparkling water for a natural boost of flavour with a refreshing twist. Turmeric: This trick I happened to hear ‘via the grapevine’ as an old wives tale and couldn’t help but be skeptical of its truth. Turmeric is used in curry powders and stains your clothes, how could it possibly help to whiten your teeth? So I put the theory to test, and much to my surprise and delight, it works! Here is how: hydrate one teaspoon of organic turmeric powder (make sure it is not a curry powder!) with 2 teaspoons of water or until a paste is formed. Rub the paste onto the front of your teeth and leave to set for 3-5 minutes. Spit out and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water. Continue by brushing as normal with toothpaste. The results should be noticeable immediately. Take care not to spill the turmeric on your clothes and beware that if your bathroom sink is white. it could become yellow too. It is a rather messy ordeal but all-natural and most effective!

How To Prevent And Cure Back Pain Keep Moving Programme Created by Dr. Tolessa, this DVD provides basic to intermediate lower back exercises. Dr. Tolessa ABODE caught up with Dr. Tolessa, Qatar’s leading Orthopedic Surgeon at Al-Ahli Hospital to talk about the excruciating and expensive problem of back pain. Dr. Tolessa says he has two passions. The first is surgery; to help people. The second is preventative work and educating people on how to avoid pain. He states, “back pain has a huge social economic impact as 80% of us will suffer this at some point in our lives”. Dr. Tolessa trained in Finland and worked in the UK and Canada before being recruited to Qatar. He was one of the first surgeons to start the Orthopedics Department at Al-Ahli Hospital. Started in 2008, the clinic now sees 2,500 patients monthly. Two years ago, as 70% of his patients suffered from lower back pain, Dr. Tolessa created a DVD called Keep Moving; a program to prevent and improve lower pack pain. He recently launched another DVD

program introducing an animated cartoon character called Dr. Stretch. It highlights simple exercises in a fun way that can be done whilst working or travelling to prevent musculoskeletal pain. Dr. Tolessa’s philosophy is “the solution to pollution is dilution. You cannot get rid of it but you can reduce it. This also applies to back pain. If you do nothing, nothing will change!” Back pain cannot be cured, but you can reduce the pain. The best solution is to take preventative measures: • Posture: stand and sit with a straight back, legs uncrossed • Simple Stretches: can be done every few hours • Exercise: such as pilates, strengthens core muscles that support the spine

• Healthy Diet: Eat a balanced diet to prevent obesity, extra weight puts strain on the lower back. • Ergomonic Chair: supports key areas of your body • Adequate Rest and Sleep: so your body functions properly When is a back operation necessary? When the nerve is pressed an operation can alleviate 90-95% of the pain. Also, with aging of the spine, one segment might be more arthritic than another, therefore an operation would be advantageous. However, only 5% of patients end up having surgery. How can companies educate their employees about back pain? Companies can play the Dr. Stretch Keep Moving DVD on their intranet system every hour. These exercises take only a few minutes and will improve productivity by reducing employees’ back pain and lowering absenteeism.

kids safety

child car safety Dr. Rafael Consunji Photography Jessie Palanca

Minimize travel stress and protect your most precious cargo with these easy to implement guidelines. in the front seat. Infants increase their risk of death by 254 per cent, even if they are restrained, in the front seat. All child passenger deaths seen at Hamad General Hospital from 2009-2010, were unrestrained front seat passengers.

Step 3 Do not put your young children in adult seatbelts.

Step 1 Wear your seatbelt every time you ride a vehicle. Qatar laws require that only front seat passengers use seatbelts. The laws of physics (which apply to all countries and nationalities) state that, no matter where you are sitting in a vehicle, if you are unrestrained then you will have a much higher chance of being ejected from the vehicle and/or hitting the colliding vehicle/s, co-passengers or the vehicle’s structure. This is why the global standard for passenger safety is that all passengers must be restrained all of the time. Children learn from example, so be a good role model for your child passengers. If adults do not wear seat belts, children will not wear them either.

Step 2 Keep young children in the rear seats. Children under the age of 10 are mandated, by Qatar law, to ride in the rear. The reason for this is that a child, riding unrestrained or in an adult’s lap in the front row is 60-70 per cent more likely to die or suffer from a severe injury. The advantage of riding in the rear is greatest for children under 4 but it persists until the age of 12. A child should not ride in the front seat until he or she is taller than 1.45 M and can sit in the front seat with knees bent and back firmly against the seat back. Airbags, standard for all front seat positions, are deadly for children

A seatbelt is supposed to prevent excess forward motion of a passenger by restraining them at the ‘strong points’ of one’s body. For adults, the lap belt holds you at the hip or pelvic bones and the shoulder belt holds you at your bony part of your shoulder joint. When a young child uses an adult seatbelt, the belt does not fall on his ‘strong points’. The lap belt will restrain him at his abdomen, causing internal bleeding or intestinal rupture, and the shoulder belt will act on his neck, causing airway or spinal cord damage. This is the reason why booster or beltpositioning seats are recommended for older children. These seats boost up the child so the 2 belts hold the child in the proper place in the event of a crash.

Step 4 When buying a car seat for your child, get educated and get help. Appropriate child restraint systems are specifically designed to protect infants and young children from injury during a collision or a sudden stop by restraining their movement away from the vehicle

structure and distributing the forces of a crash over the strongest parts of the body, with minimum damage to the soft tissues. Child restraints are also effective in reducing injuries that can occur during non-crash events, such as a sudden stop, a swerving evasive maneuver or a door opening. Before going to buy a car seat, know your child’s height and weight, or better still, bring your child along.

Step 5 Every child needs to be restrained on every trip taken. In Qatar, one out of every six drivers has already been in a crash that caused serious injury requiring hospitalization. “But we were only going to the park” or “He always rides in front when we go to the store”. These are comments frequently heard from parents of children hurt in a car crash when asked if the child was in a car seat when the crash occurred. Every trip in the car counts. No excuses.

How to Start Playing Tennis Compiled by Marlynne Mallari - Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca

Who doesn’t love tennis? More and more people are getting hooked on this fun and fast paced sport. Tennis is a fun way to lose weight, improve your cardiovascular health, coordination, flexibility and balance.

Health Benefits of Tennis. In an article written for USTA.com, Dr. Jack L. Groppel advises that worldrenowned scientists from a variety of disciplines attest to tennis being one of the best sports for you to play.

Here are his reasons why:

Backhand

1

People who participate in tennis 3 hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause, according to physician Ralph Paffenbarger who studied over 10,000 people over a period of 20 years.

2

Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism and selfesteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes and non-athletes according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut State University.

3

Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and thus promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain, reported scientists at the University of Illinois.

4

Tennis outperforms golf, inline skating and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics according to Dr. Jim Gavin, author of The Exercise Habit.

5

Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, inline skating, or cycling, according to studies on caloric expenditures.

A double backhand works best for most people because of the extra power and stability, but a single-handed backhand might work for you, too. As you see in the image, your hand has shifted slightly from the forehand position. Your wrist is now angled to steer the racket to a slanted point. The reason for this is to minimize lob balls.

How to get started: A. Buy a decent tennis racket and high quality tennis shoes at Go Sports at City Centre or Sports Corner at Lagoona Mall. Make sure you tell them you are just getting startedthey should be able to help you find the gear you need. B. Learn everything you can about the sport, including what all the tennis terms are: love, deuce and ace; check out how to avoid injuries and how to hit a proper ball, etc. C. Find a good tennis club and join. There are several here in Doha; Ask about private lessons to begin if you can afford it. D. Don't get discouraged there are loads of different strategies, player archetypes, and formations. Do push-ups or lift free weights to gain extra strength in your arms, it will help you with better shots.

GET TO KNOW THE BASICS:

Step 1 Get a Grip Forehand The foundation of tennis begins with the most basic and most-used stroke, the forehand, so it’s important to master this grip first. Hold the racket facing you and place your hand on top of the racket, making sure you grasp it close to the edge. See image.

Step 2 Know Your Stance

Backhand Stance

Starting Position

From starting position, move your feet on your left side, your toes and racket parallel to each other. Prepare to receive the ball.

Your feet should be shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent.

Step 3 Follow Through Follow-Through

Forehand Stance From starting position moved your feet on your right side, your toes and racket parallel to each other. Prepare to receive the ball.

A follow-through with your tennis strokes is a must. You should be returning the ball with a controlled force and full swing, meaning your arm will not stop after you hit the ball; rather, you complete the movement after your racket makes contact with the ball.

Occasionally you’ll see an impressive piece of furniture that ignites the imagination. You admire the craftsmanship behind it and are drawn to its character. If you ponder for a moment you begin to wonder, who was the creator of this great piece? Full of vision and a virtuoso of his craft, Creu’s owner Habib Alfar specializes in unique hand crafted wooden furniture proudly made in Qatar. ABODE was delighted to meet him. Habib previously worked in the oil and gas industry but took a leap of faith to leave his job and set up his own company. “I am much happier now running my own small business in which my imagination can run wild”, he related. He bases his designs on ‘farmhouse’ flair: when you think of a farmhouse, you’ll see green fields and bright sunshine,

and the elements of decorating are rustic, natural and welcoming. Since beginning this path he has constantly updated himself by visiting furniture showrooms to collate the latest designs. He then proceeds by drafting the blueprint to inject his own style. According to Habib, his pieces are timeless, mixing contemporary with classic, clean and distinct patterns. He hopes his creations will be enjoyed and find a place in the homes of their owners for many years. There’s no going back to the corporate life. Inevitably his craft will continue to bring us a fusion of art mastery and brilliant innovation.

Jump into Fall Back-to-School Decorating Essentials

By Suzy Q

Photos By: Carlyn and Co., EM Design, Kemp Hall, Maggie Rose, Tracy Murdock, Cindy Rinfret, and Gloss NY

Try these easy ideas to redecorate your child’s bedroom, just in time for back-to-school!

1

Try out a new theme–

Kids’ rooms make the perfect place for a wall mural and provide a lifetime of memories. Create the ultimate kids’ bedroom with a large wall decal. You can try out this project yourself with some general knowledge in painting along with a dose of creativity, or you can purchase a ready to go wall mural that acts similar to wallpaper. Make sure to pick themes that grow with your children, and start with durable neutralcoloured furniture with inexpensive accessories. Try to find out what your child is interested in and whether this might be a sustained interest for several years. Play with the rest of your fabrics, headboard designs, and drawings that can be easily changed as the child makes the transition from preschool to kindergarten.

2

Pamper up the bed – Avoid getting caught up

by cute decorative themes without thinking about the main purpose of your child’s bedroom – a relaxing place to sleep and recharge. In order for your child to rejuvenate and get up for a full day at school, they need to have a cozy bed in a room without distractions. Consider a canopy bed to provide a private space where you child can close up the curtains and hit the snooze. Switch up the duvet cover and sheets to one that matches the theme and colours of your redecorated room. To make the bed even more comfortable, add a layer of memory foam over your mattress to provide support and comfort throughout the night.

3

Set aside a space for learning– Assign a corner

space away from your child’s bed for a place to study and complete homework. Make sure to equip the desk with everything needed for studying and doing schoolwork such as a computer, paper, pencils, and even a microscope. Save the video game system for the family room, since it can be a big distraction away from schoolwork and even bedtime. Choose an appropriate chair that provides back support and comfort. Avoid plastic chairs and opt for a swivel chair that is cushioned and where the height can be adjusted.

4

Get organized – Much of the back-toschool mindset revolves around setting a routine and getting organized. You can get your children back on track by de-cluttering their room and providing them with clever storage solutions for organization and to keep things tidy. Plastic storage bins with labels, under bed storage, tons of bookshelves, and even a fun locker unit make for a fun and creative kid’s room. Make sure to keep clever calendars with all the important dates marked to teach your kids how to stay on top of their schedules and never miss an important date.

fun by drawing on your walls – without getting in trouble! Follow these easy steps to transform a plain wall into a fun outlet for creativity:

1. Wipe down your chosen wall to eliminate any dirt, grease or dust and then paint it with a good layer of dark tinted primer.

2. Next, paint your wall with a layer of the chalkboard paint. Remember, it doesn’t have to be black! There are many colours on the market these days such as pink, green, and even blue! Coordinate your chalkboard colors with any décor.

3. After the paint dries you need to cover the entire surface with chalk using a large stick turned on its side. Rub the chalk into the surface and then wipe it off. Doing this seals the chalkboard and allows whatever is written and drawn on the surface to be completely erased, leaving no marks. Let the fun begin!

EXPERIENCE THE REAL ITALIAN FLAVOURS at

paper moon doha by francesca moser

ABODE had the pleasure to meet with Stefania Galligani Magrini, owner of Paper Moon and Camillo Cibelli, to learn the story behind this exciting new opening.

P

aper Moon Milano first opened its doors back in 1977 in Via Bagutta, in the real heart of Milan just steps away from Via Monte Napoleone, the city’s most fashionable shopping street. Stefania’s family opened this typical trattoria with 136 seats over two floors with the aim of delivering top quality food at accessible prices. Their hard work paid off almost instantly, as the family-run business went from strength to strength. Thanks to the winning combo of a tasty authentic Italian menu and immaculate service, its tables soon became some of the most requested and coveted in town! And 36 years on, the legacy and the success continue. Hollywood actors, politicians and celebrities from all over the world are regulars at Paper Moon Milano. An advanced booking is definitely advised to avoid disappointment and any queues. The same applies for their outlet in Istanbul, which opened back in 1996. Paper Moon Istanbul is another great success for the Galligani family. Located on the European side, it is considered one of the favourite eateries in town. So after Milan and Istanbul, Doha will be the third lucky location that will be able to enjoy and experience Paper Moon first hand. “We are looking forward to this new adventure here in Doha. Our restaurant will offer our renowned simple Italian cuisine in a chic but relaxed environment.” Stefania said. “We chose Doha as our additional

location, because many Qatari customers back in Milan expressed their wish and interest in expanding our brand in Qatar, so we did!” After a few months of planning and finalizing details, this Autumn Paper Moon Doha is ready to welcome its guests in their stunning restaurant in Jeddah Square. Here, the truly Italian team guided by Executive Chef Fabrizio De Togni and restaurant manager Valerio Sattin, will make sure you experience the real Italian flavours. Their signature dish, Pappardelle Paper Moon is a must, a ticker version of spaghetti with cream, bacon and tomatoes…whatever you will choose from their succulent menu, you won’t leave disappointed, this is guaranteed! Stefania Galligani Magrini and her team will also inaugurate a sister restaurant in Doha this September: La Spiga by Paper Moon will in fact open its doors at W Hotel. Another great location to taste their original mouth-watering menu! PAPER MOON DOHA Price: A la carte Timings: 12:00 pm to 11:30 pm Location: Jaidah Square – Airport Road Tel: +974 4016 6000

Spicy Crispy Tofu Sandwich Serves: 2

Ingredients:

• packet extra firm tofu, drained • ¼ cup ground red pepper/chili paste • 1 medium garlic clove, minced • 1 tbsp flat leaf parsley, chopped • ½ cup Panko breadcrumbs • 1 tbsp olive oil • ½ cup sour cream • 1 cup baby spinach • 1 fresh tomato, washed and thinly sliced • 1 ripe avocado, peeled, pit removed and sliced thinly lengthwise • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 4 slices of Gourmet House Vollkorn bread

Barley Risotto with Asparagus, Peas and Manchego Cheese Serves: 4

Ingredients:

• 1 cup barley • 1 large garlic clove, minced • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 tbsp olive oil • 8 cups vegetable stock • 1 ½ cups frozen peas • 2 bunches asparagus, washed and cut into 5 cm pieces • 2 tsp grated lemon peel • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 3 tsp finely chopped flat leaf parsley • 2 tsp finely chopped fresh mint leaves • 1 tsp salt • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 cup grated Manchego cheese • ½ cup pine nuts, roasted

Procedure:

• Place 2 tbsp of olive oil in a large, deep pot and heat the oil over medium heat. When the oil is hot add the chopped onion and the garlic. Cook for 5 min or until the onion is soft, stirring occasionally. • Add the barley and cook stirring so that all the barley pearls get coated with the olive oil, about 2-3 min. Now start adding the stock, using a ladle, add a ladle at a time, not adding the next ladle until the first ladle had been absorbed. Keep the heat on medium, and stir the barley risotto frequently. Start checking the barley after 25 minutes, the barley needs to be soft and tender. • As soon as the barley has reached this stage, add the asparagus bits and peas and stir in. Flavour the risotto with salt and pepper and add the chopped parsley, mint and lemon peel and juice. Lastly add the grated cheese. Taste the risotto and adjust the seasoning if needed. • Serve the risotto immediately, topped with pine nuts and bon appétit!

Procedure:

• Slice the tofu into 2.5 cm slices by 1 cm thick. Place onto kitchen paper and cover with another piece of kitchen paper. Mix the chili paste, garlic and parsley in a shallow bowl. Place the Panko breadcrumbs in another flat bowl. Dip each of the slices of tofu in the chili mixture and then in the Panko breadcrumbs, and make sure to pat the mixture into each piece. • Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add the 1 tbsp of olive oil. Slowly add the tofu slices in the pan and fry on each side for about 2 minutes until crispy. Place on kitchen paper. • Toast the sliced bread on each side, spread each slice of bread with a layer of sour cream. Place the baby spinach on 2 of the slices, cover with the crispy tofu, add the sliced tomato on top and sprinkle with some of the salt and pepper. Add the thinly sliced avocado on top of the tomato and season with the lemon juice, salt and pepper, now add the last piece of bread on top and cut the sandwich in half. • Enjoy!

chef’s tip: Enjoy immediately before it becomes too soggy. Use fresh ingredients for the best taste!

chef’s tip: Risotto is for sure one of my favourite dishes to cook and to enjoy at home. If you are a cheese fanatic, experiment with different kinds of cheeses: goats cheese, blue cheese or add the classic Parmesan cheese. To add a little more freshness to this dish, top the risotto off with some crispy rocket leaves as garnish.

Roasted Butternut Squash Tahini Salad Serves: 4

Ingredients:

For the salad: • 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cut into 2 cm cubes • 2 medium red onions, cleaned and cut into thin wedges • 1 large clove of garlic • 2 tbsp olive oil • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 can (250g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1/3 cup fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped • 1/3 cup chopped fresh dates • 1/3 cup walnuts, roughly chopped For the dressing: • 1 large garlic clove, finely minced • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 5 tbsp tahini, well stirred • 3 tbsp water • 2 tbsp olive oil

Procedure:

Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Pesto with Fusilli: Serves 4:

Ingredients:

• 9 ripe tomatoes, halved lengthwise • 2 big red bell peppers • ½ tsp chili flakes • 2 large garlic cloves, minced • 1 cup basil, tightly packed, plus extra for garnish • 1/2 cup almonds, toasted • ½ cup pitted olives, cut into rings • ½ cup olive oil • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper • 3 cups fusilli pasta • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Procedure:

• Preheat the oven to 100 degrees Celsius, line a baking tray with baking parchment and place the halved tomatoes on the tray, sprinkle with olive oil, salt, pepper and the chili flakes. On another tray add the red peppers and sprinkle with olive oil. Place the tray with the tomatoes in the oven. Roast the tomatoes for 1 hour. Increase the temperature to 160 degrees Celsius and roast for another 8 minutes. Remove the tomatoes from the oven; turn the temperature up to 180 degrees Celsius and place the tray with peppers in the oven and roast for 12 minutes until the skin from the peppers turns brown and bubbles. Remove from the oven and cool. • When the peppers are cool enough to handle remove the skin, seeds and membranes. Cut half of the peppers into strips; place the other half of the pepper in a bowl for later use. • Chop half of the roasted tomatoes roughly and keep aside. Place the other half of the tomatoes in a food processor together with the peppers kept aside, the minced garlic, basil, olive oil, salt, pepper and half of the almonds and process until smooth. Pour the pesto into bowl and mix in the other tomatoes. • Heat enough water in a deep pot to boil the pasta and add 1 tbsp of salt to the water. Boil the pasta according to the direction on the packet. When the pasta is cooked, strain the pasta and return to the pot. Add the pesto, remaining almonds and the reserved peppers to the pasta and toss gently to cover. • Dish the pasta up in bowls and sprinkle with the remaining basil leaves and some Parmesan cheese.

• Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Place the butternut and the onion on a roasting pan. Add the garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper and mix the butternut and onion to cover in the olive oil and garlic. Place the tray in the oven and roast for 25 min or until soft and slightly brown. • Make the dressing for the salad. Mix all the ingredients together, if the dressing is too thick add some more water to thin it down. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. • Take the butternut squash out of the oven, and let it cool slightly. Transfer the butternut to a medium sized mixing bowl. Now add the drained chickpeas, coriander leaves, dates, walnuts and dressing to the butternut. Toss all the ingredients carefully together to coat everything in the dressing. • Serve immediately.

chef’s tip: For a lighter version of the salad, omit the chickpeas and enjoy as a light lunch by itself. If you are looking for some more greens, don’t be shy to add some fresh crispy leaves of your choice. For a bit of a different flavour, add a little cinnamon powder to the butternut squash before roasting.

chef’s tip: Use the pesto by itself as a delicious topping for your favourite piece of bread, crisps or veggie sticks or add it to the crispy tofu sandwich instead of the sour cream.

THE GOOD LIFE at BORGO EGNAZIA Get spoiled in this exclusive resort in Puglia, Italy’s heel. Summertime may be over but this doesn’t mean you have to wait until next year for another glorious holiday. September (and autumn in general) is the perfect time to enjoy the mild temperatures of southern Italy and the unspoilt and still fairly unknown coast of the region of Puglia offers crystal clear sea water, captivating local food, ancient architecture and a stunning landscape of over 60 million olive trees, believe it or not. Nestled in this idyllic scenery BORGO EGNAZIA was born in 1996, thanks to the Melpignano’s family vision to combine their beloved region with luxurious hospitality and cultural richness in the heart of Puglia. The result is impressive: they transformed their holiday home in the fisherman village of Savelletri di Fasano on the Adriatic coast, into one

of Italy's (if not Europe's) most stylish retreats. This is much more than a resort, it actually represents an unique concept of hospitality – offering an unfussy charm and plenty of character and style. The whole property reproduces the ancient limestone local rural villages, reworked with a modern and sophisticated twist by the local architect Pino Brescia. The accommodations options are all outstanding, from gorgeous and sophisticated rooms at LA CORTE in the main Hotel, to unique and traditional apartments in IL BORGO, to elegantly refined villas with private pools, scattered around the resort among the picturesque olive trees fields – great for privacy seekers. Recharge yourself for the season ahead by relaxing and lazing around one of the picturesque four pools

(one is indoor), or head to the spectacular two private beaches: La Fonte, which is ideal for families or Cala Masciola, where the nautical centre is located. For more active characters, you’ll find four tennis courts and an endless program of activities to keep everyone entertained, from a top-notch kids club, to cooking and ceramic lessons, a boat ride at sunset and wine tasting sessions, to name a few. Also a visit to the sister property, San Domenico Golf, is a must, in particular for avid golf players, as it hosts a one of a kind 18-hole course among ancient ruins, stunning seaside views and olive groves. With all these interesting and unique activities, it is no surprise to hear that BORGO EGNAZIA has been recognized internationally as one of the “Best Family Hotels”, thanks to their attention to detail and their mission

Qatar Uk 2013 And Qatar Gas Announce Artist’s Journey As part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, artist Ben Barbour is set to travel on Q-Flex LNG vessel from Qatar to the UK, capturing his journey in art. The journey will follow the historic pearl trade routes, during which Barbour will capture observations and objects from both past and present in his art. Ben Barbour is a celebrated, professional and extraordinary talent with deep roots documenting Qatar’s remarkable journey. His highly acclaimed work ‘New City’ documented Msheireb, the earliest suburb of Doha, through sketches as the area underwent extensive regeneration. Barbour’s voyage on board the Q-Flex, will draw parallels between Qatar’s industry of natural resources and its former pearl fishing industry. Barbour will also focus on the community of individuals onboard the tanker, collecting and re-telling the personal stories of the crew as well as organizing workshops for them. Martin Hope, Director, British Council Qatar, says “The project serves to underline the already existing strong ties between our countries and we are tremendously proud to support it.” Barbour will regularly post updates online; they can be followed on the Qatar UK 2013 Facebook page facebook. com/QatarUK2013.

people This year, 2013, sees two years of your assignment completed in Doha. How do you feel about it and has anything changed or developed since your arrival? A: Raised awareness about Peru. This is probably the best outcome so far. Nowadays Qatari authorities and citizens look at Peru with different eyes. On one side, awareness of Peru as a home to Inca Civilization and a multiethnic country with Arab heritage from the time of the Spanish colonial era. Awareness of its biological diversity, privileged geographical location and delicious gastronomy. These were –and continuously are– the goal since the Embassy was settled down. Therefore, we addressed our efforts to showcase exhibitions in Katara Cultural Village, the first one about “Machu Picchu”, a 15th-century Inca citadel considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and another one about the “Peruvian Paso Horse”, a breed of light pleasure saddle horse known for its smooth and graceful ride. We also organized three successful gastronomic festivals in Doha. On the other hand, awareness of Peru as trusted business partner, one of the world's fastest-growing economies. We have encouraged government bodies and businessmen from both countries to evaluate investment projects and trade opportunities.

HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani visited Peru at the beginning of the year and also a delegation of Qatar Holding travelled there recently to discuss future projects and investments. Can you tell us more about it all? A: From a political perspective, Peru and Qatar are much closer than ever. The official visit to Peru of H.H. The Father Emir was indeed a break point since it was -at the highest state levelthe recognition of common bilateral interests. Several Qatari multi-sectorial delegations also visited Peru recently to be informed about opportunities in infrastructure, mining, agriculture and hospitality. Moreover, last April a technical team of a Peruvian stateowned oil company met in Doha with representatives from Qatar Petroleum International to showcase investment projects in petrochemical industry. Qatar invests sovereign funds abroad and Peru has a stable legal framework for profitable portfolio equivalent to US$ 10.697 million, in mining , hydrocarbons, infrastructure, agriculture and hospitality. Qatar takes care about food security and Peru is one of the main exporters of fruit, vegetables, rice, sugar, coffee, tea, cocoa and many more.

Qatar has recently opened its Embassy in Lima. How does this contribute with your assignment in Doha? A: H.E. Mr. Jamal Al-Bader was appointed as the first Ambassador of Qatar in Peru. A senior diplomat with 10 years of experience in United States and was former Ambassador of his country in Brasil between 2008 and 2012. Certainly his designation in Peru, as probably the most knowledgeable Qatari official about the reality in Latin America, is a sign from the Government of Qatar of a deep and committed interest in the bilateral relationship. We do have a frequent dialogue to contribute with his initiatives and the success of his assignment in Peru.

How are you planning to promote tourism and trade connections between Peru and Qatar? A: The opening of a new destination requires a careful feasibility study since air connectivity is closely linked to tourism and trade. We have spoken with decision takers in Qatar Airways. They are aware of Peru as a hub in the west coast of South America. Meanwhile, we are starting soon the negotiation of the necessary legal framework, an Air Services Agreement.

people in Bath, where I grew up – I started working in the kitchen as a porter aged 13 eventually being promoted to commis chef! From there I started at catering college and trained as a chef. Early on I tried to carve out a career in the sports and leisure industry, which was one of my passions growing up but I always returned to the hospitality business.

What is the difference of your service compared to other hotels in the country? A: Marriott as always retained simple but firm values, such as looking after our associates and in return they give great service to our guests and the guests keep coming back over and over again.

People development is one of the integral aspects in any business, how are you responding to this program? A: The hotel business is simply all

The Pride of a Hotelier Feature Coordinated by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca

Hotels are booming in Qatar, so what sets one apart from another? Often it comes down to the people behind the services. ABODE interviewed John Hazard, General Manager of Marriott Doha, who runs a hotel longknown as one of Doha’s best. What is the most exciting part of your job? A: The People and the Buzz, the people you work alongside and the people we serve, every day is different and there’s always something going on. I have always enjoyed the fact that being a GM is not a desk job, it’s hands on and it can be really good fun. I have met and worked with some great people over the years, many of whom are now

close friends. Also, if you like travel, this job can open so many doors for you. I have visited some fantastic destinations around the world on conferences and training courses.

When did you decide that the hospitality sector was the one for you? A: Hotels are in the blood for me, my father was a successful hotel GM in the UK throughout the 1970s. My parents then opened and ran their own hotel business

about people – the people we serve and the people we work alongside day in day out. We enjoy a culturally diverse workforce of over 500 associates made up of over 20 different nationalities. Many associates here have worked at the hotel since opening, or have at least ten years behind them and that is what sets us apart from our competition, our associates know our regular guests by name and they know their preferences and give them great service every time, they are the reason our customers keep coming back. I consider myself extremely fortune to work alongside such an amazing group of people who clearly love what they do as much as me.

Share with us your ‘words of wisdom’ to stay lean and strong in this industry. A: From a personal perspective, stay fit and healthy, no matter what my schedule looks like I always try and find the time for the gym or some exercise. The hours in this business can be very long and the nature of being a GM involves a level of entertaining that if nothing else could lead to a rapidly expanding waistline! If I can’t hit the gym at least three times a week then I try and do some level of physical exercise such as running or rowing. I find exercise also helps me unwind, always washing away some of the stresses of the day.

Alfardan Group and Dhreima Provide an

A

lfardan Group and Dhreima, the Qatar Orphan Foundation, recently collaborated to present an unforgettable evening to the children of Dhreima, through a special event held at the Al Gassar Resort. Opening after Iftar and themed ‘I Believe in Me’, the evening featured games, activity booths, arts and crafts and bouncy castles. A large expression area, with a 12 meter-long portrait, was also set up to enable children and volunteers to colour, draw and write notes expressing the spirit of the holy month and the “I Believe in Me” theme of the night. The Iftar in particular was also a unique experience for the children with “1001 night”-themed decorations to create a genuine Arabian setting for the Gala event, featuring an array of cuisines and delicacies, not to mention traditional Qatari foods and a live cooking station. Alfardan Automobiles, a member of Alfardan Group, gave each child a souvenir from one of BMW, Mini and Ferrari lifestyle items, in addition to “I Believe in Me” mementos. Commenting on the initiative, an official spokesperson from Alfardan Group, said, “The underlining objective of this evening was to create a memorable night for these children and their volunteers, not just a simple Iftar. At Alfardan Group, we pride ourselves in creating unique experiences through our value-driven offerings; however these children are the essence of uniqueness; the happiness on their faces when we opened the activity and entertainment area especially designed for them at Al Gassar Ballroom was priceless. These children, who are the stars of Dhreima, are important members in our society and taking care of them is not only a CSR initiative, it is our duty to the community, our society and our country. As proud citizens of Qatar we consider all Dhreima children as our own and Alfardan Group will continue to organise such events to always bring a smile on their faces. On the other hand, it is also important to mention that Dhreima has done an excellent job with these children, who look happy and content, and are brimming with hope and joy. The volunteers, supervisors and management of Dhreima who were active throughout the evening along with the Alfardan team also deserve our praise and appreciation. We salute these wonderful men and women who have dedicated their lives to take care of these extraordinary children.” “To be supported by a leading advocate of corporate social responsibility such as Alfardan Group enhances our ability to meet the unique needs of our orphaned wards and fulfill our organizational commitments. We appreciate Alfardan Group’s keen understanding of the importance of social development in ensuring Qatar’s overall progress. Its expertise and fruitful experiences in social work make it a perfect partner for Dhreima as their ultimate objective was the entertainment and happiness of these exceptional children by creating an exclusive private night especially for them. Our collaboration reflects our belief that the care of orphans is the responsibility of the entire Qatari society,” added Khaled Kamal, GM, Dhreima. Dhreima was founded in June 2003 under the auspices of H.H. Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser AlMisnad. It provides residential care for children under the institution’s accommodations and nonresidential services for families who have been granted custody of children of unknown parents. The institution is named after the dhreima flower, part of the natural vegetation of the State of Qatar, which grows in hard ground and under harsh climates. The flower symbolizes the strength, perseverance and innocent beauty that children under Dhreima’s care possess. Alfardan Group’s CSR initiatives mirror how the Group conducts its business: ethically, responsibly, and charitably. The Group’s recent partnership with Dhreima to organize a memorable ‘Iftar’ event for orphans underscores its commitment to supporting a healthy, motivated society. Being a leading advocate of broader private sector CSR adoption and implementation, Alfardan Group has developed various CSR initiatives designed to benefit its customers and the community at large as envisioned in the human development pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
