SHEIKHA MOZAH attended the Netherlands King and Queen coronation.
On the 30th of April the world welcomed Willem-Alexander as the first Dutch King in 120 years. Our very own style icon, Sheikha Mozah represented Qatar at the investiture ceremony. Her Highness stood out among royal attendees from all over the world for her warm smile and immaculate attire. Rediscover Your Senses with Amouage’ Library Collection and Opus VII Fragrances Amouage’s Library Collection is a celebration of integrity, creativity and virtuosity. Inspired by the knowledge and experience drawn from the art of living, each of the seven fragrances reveal the many facets of discovery. Amouage Creative Director, Christopher Chong, says, “I have always been fascinated by the struggle of the critical nature of mankind with the long winding journey which leads to the domination of the mind in the pursuit and interpretation of knowledge. No matter how tumultuous, once knowledge is obtained, we submit ourselves to a powerful sensation of liberation and euphoria.” He explains that this act is seen in its fullest splendour of the Galbanum and warm woods set against the violent reincarnation of the resin notes. DIA-STYLE.COM By Rasha Khouri
This month ABODE interviewed Rasha Khouri, founder of DIA-style.com, a new e-commerce fashion site for the Middle East in English and Arabic, offering a uniquely comprehensive shopping experience for the luxury consumer in the Middle East. Necklace Shourouk Heels Valentino
Bag Burberry
Blazer Balmain
You launched your career as an investment banker at JP Morgan in New York, how come you decided to venture in the fashion world instead? A: I always had a passion for fashion, business, technology as well as the Middle East and have been fortunate to be able to bring all of these elements together in DIA-style.com. I always had in mind that I wanted to be able to shape and create my own business so being an entrepreneur was a natural progression from the corporate world.
E-commerce is getting bigger and bigger. How is your new business responding to the demand? A: E-commerce has increased worldwide and reports from VISA and Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) predict that by 2015 the online retail market in GCC countries will have
grown to $15 billion, compared to $3.3 billion in 2010. I saw that no one was focusing on the online luxury market for the Middle East in Arabic and English and that there were no websites purely catering to the region for on-season, on-trend luxury fashion. Not even the global brands have websites in Arabic.
Are residents in the Gulf Peninsula shopping online regularly or do they still prefer a more personal service in boutiques? A: There is a place both for online and as well as physical stores. Since our launch we have seen an increasing amount of customers buying from our site. We offer a very personal customer service via our stylists who are available online and over the phone. We have heard that
YOU CAN FIND SOME AMAZING ITEMS ONLINE, pieces
you may not be able to get hold of in boutiques or stores where you live! Sign up for newsletters and Facebook and Twitter to make sure you know about special offers.
some of our customers enjoy the online shopping experience more because they can shop without sales assistants hovering around them. We're launching an online live chat service in a few weeks to further enhance the customer experience.
How do you make your website stand out from the myriad of other e-outlets? A: We offer the largest selection of luxury designers and products that ship quickly to the Middle East. We put together the products from the top luxury e-tailers worldwide, including NET-APORTER, Harrods, my-wardrobe, matchesfashion, brownsfashion, mytheresa, Boutique1 and Stylebop. You'll find all their products in one place on our site so that you can easily see the latest deliveries from all of them, or see everything available from a particular designer or sort the product by type of garment or accessory. All of the products on DIA-style.com come direct from the designers, so we can 100 per cent guarantee that everything on the site is authentic.

KATE DOES IT AGAIN… THE SUPER MODEL IS THE NEW FACE OF KÉRASTASE The most prestigious universal fashion icon, KATE MOSS, is starring this season as the face of Kérastase’s very first Styling range. The British top model, ambassador to many fashion and beauty brands, represents for the first time the image of a luxury hair-care brand. The alliance of Kérastase’s high expertise and Kate’s audacious glamour is aimed to change the way styling is perceived, celebrating hair moving freely and the
pleasure of sensual textures. This K Manifeste signed by Kérastase and Kate Moss announces the creation of a new era in styling: the era of «Couture Styling». The realization of this campaign saw Kate in the hands of her friend Luigi Murenu, studio hairdresser and Artistic Director of this new range. He made sure the long hair of Kate was sculpted, wavy or curly, with oversized volume or free flowing energy. Simply divine…

BEAUTY Q&A AWAKEN YOUR SENSES
Sylvaine Delacorte said, “It is not the perfume that perfumes the woman but it is the woman who perfumes the perfume.” What to do when you have a dilemma in finding your own scent? Guerlain perfumer Sylvaine Delacorte will show you how to discover the fragrance you’ll love.
Q.
What’s the difference between perfume, eau de parfum and parfum de toilette?
A.
At Guerlain, the orchestration of the notes are often different, we have more top notes (extraverted) like citrus, aromatic, and less amount of middle notes and base notes (alcohol 80°) concentration of essential oils from 6% to 20%. In the EDP (Eau de Parfum), there are less top notes and more middle notes and base notes for more tenacity (concentration from 13% to 30%); sometimes EDP is enriched by some added raw materials.
Q. Where shall I apply my perfume? A. On the 10 pulse
Q.
Can I mix two different fragrances?
A.
Freedom is key when perfuming yourself! Personally, I don’t like blending different perfumes, because it is a long process of creation to obtain THE symphony. You don’t mix Beethoven and Mozart… The only perfume that I like to mix with is Spiritueuse Double Vanille from the range The Exclusives, because it doesn’t have a lot of facets, so it can be mixed with many other perfumes containing vanilla.
points, behind the birth of the hair, on the neck, the wrists, behind the elbows, belly button, behind the knees, and after EDP or EDT (Eau De Toilette) on clothes and hair.
Q. I’m taking medication, will it affect the scent of my perfume? A. Yes, with some
medication, food, hormones, weather, air conditioning, etc. it affects the scent of your perfume.
Q. How often should I put on perfume in a day? A. If you wear it from the morning, use body products, plus the
pure perfume (extract) on the skin on the pulse points - it is the more refined, sexy and intimate product - plus after EDP, normally you don’t need to put on more perfume during the day! But if you need some more, don’t hesitate to spray again when you want.

Q.
IS IT TRUE THAT IT IS BETTER TO BUY SMALLER BOTTLES OF PERFUME BECAUSE OF ITS CAPACITY TO RETAIN ITS NATURAL SCENT?
A.
It is better to keep your fragrance in a cool place, away from the light so it does not get altered. Once
you do that, it is the same to have small or big bottles.
TIPS FOR SYLVAINE DELACORTE CHOOSING Sylvaine joined Guerlain in 1983 and was in 2002 Director of Fragrance A NEW FRAGRANCE nominated Evaluation and Development. Since then, (THAT YOU'LL TRULY ENJOY) A)
Make your choice in the morning to have a “fresh” nose, test it on the skin, not a blotter, take your time, and sleep with it.
B)
Do not try more than three new perfumes on the skin per day.

THE NOSE OF L’OCCITANE BY DELIAH FURCOI
ABODE travelled to Grasse, the world capital of perfume-making in the south of France, and delved into the essences of the perfumes we so love.

rriving into the region of Provence you have an overwhelming feeling of what it would be like to walk into a bouquet. Your senses are awakened and the air is filled with sweet scents of flowers in bloom, freshly cut grass, and the sea. ABODE’s route to discovery began in the region of Grasse. We learned upon a visit to a citrus garden in the Musée International de la Parfumerie (MIP) that in 1614 this area was a seat of leather production, particularly gloves. Prompting a unique idea to scent the gloves, the cultivation of fragrant plants

beauty ABODE was invited to create our very own original scent. It was explained that creating a perfume is made of three major notes: Head, heart and base. This experience was not easy and involved measurements and meticulous calculations – here D’Elegance was born, made by yours truly! was born. Local growers planted orange blossom, jasmine, rose, orange trees and violets, which quickly flourished in the area’s sunny microclimate. ABODE had the opportunity to meet the nose of L’Occitane and creator of the newly launched La Collection De Grasse. A local of Provence, Karine Dubreuil spent her childhood amidst the colourful fields of flowers and is the first perfumer in her family. Trained at the Roure Betrand Dupont Perfumery school in Grasse, she explains that her inspiration is from her travels especially to Asia, her encounters, cooking, raw materials or even forgotten fragrances – a scent memory discovered once again. Karine spoke candidly of her experiences. In 2004, she created ‘Envy me,’ for Gucci, then with Guerlain in 2005 concocted ‘Aqua Allegora Groselina.’ Thereafter, in 2012 she worked with Lanvin with ‘Eclat d’Arpege Gourmandise.’

RICHNESS OF SOLIDARITY BY DELIAH FURCOI
ABODE met Olivier Baussan, founder of L'OCCITANE, one of the world's top beauty brands.
T
he story of L’Occitane began 37 years ago in 1976, in Masouq, France, when a young, 23 year old, enthusiastic entrepreneur, Olivier Baussan, distilled wild rosemary and lavender to produce essential oil, using his own steam distiller. The products he produced were sold in the in the local markets of Baussan’s native Provence. The young countryside enthusiast saw that his products were increasingly popular with the local community and this spurred his interest in creating additional lines of skincare products.
In 1978, Baussan founded L’Occitane, a name he chose as a homage to “the Women from Occitania,” an area that existed in the Middle Ages and spanned southern France, northern Spain and northern Italy. He opened his first store in Volx, France, an area in southeastern France . In 1981, luck shined on Baussan when he discovered an old closed soap factory in Manosque, France and stopped to chat with the retired owner. The elderly gentleman was so impressed by Baussan

and the twinkle in this young man’s eye, that he decided to hand over his factory equipment and his know how to Baussan’s dreams. The factory was soon producing vegetable based soaps. All the while Baussan felt the weight of disappearing traditions and heritage, so he insisted the soaps be made using traditional methods and with products found in the area. In early 1990, in order to expand the business, Baussan invited in a venture capitalist firm to help finance the expansion of the company. In 1994, Austrian businessman Reinold Geiger became an additional investor in the company and the fortunes of the company exploded; soon becoming a world-wide phenomenon, with stores in over 90 countries. The
company changed its name to L’Occitane en Provence to strengthen the companies links to its roots. However, no matter how large the company becomes, it remains tied to tradition; insisting that it gather the majority of its ingredients from local producers. The company is also is active in the preservation of resources, and has entered into partnerships with organizations that utilize traditional methods of cultivation. Baussan remained with the company throughout its expansion and success. But, his creative eye was always looking for new products and opportunities. Recently, Baussan was invited to Burkina Faso, in Africa to help create and produce soaps for a less fortunate community. Here he discovered the unique properties of Shea
butter, which is made from the fallen fruit of the Shea tree. Baussan incorporated the fruit into his creations, forming a cooperative with 12 women. Today this North-South exchange with L’Occitane has 15,000 women on staff making Shea butter in a jar one of their most sold products. Baussan, still resides in Provence, France and lives his life with a simple motto, “If you know how to give, you give properly and they always come back.”

ZERONA
THE FIRST NON-INVASIVE FAT REMOVING LASER MACHINE BY DR. AYA NOUREDDINE – HEAD DIETARY DEPARTMENT OF AMAZON DIET CENTER
Have you ever wished for a machine that could burn extra body fat within two weeks without surgery, pain, or stretch marks? Well Wish not more. FDA approved, the ZERONA laser is the latest, best and safest device for breaking down body fat without surgical intervention and you can find it right here in Doha. How It Works. The cold laser technology behind the Zerona procedure has been shown to exclusively release the cellular contents of fat cells, while leaving the capillaries and other cells intact. The release of the fat cell contents is the result of the disruption of the fat cell’s membrane. Once the contents of the fat cells have been emptied they are passed through the body and disposed of by the lymphatic system. Safe and Pain Free. Is it safe to use ZERONA? Yes, the FDA cleared ZERONA as both a safe and an effective way to reduce extra body fat and take inches off your hips, waist, and thighs. In fact, Zerona technology is a revolutionary way to definite results without the risks associated with surgical intervention. Unlike other noninvasive approaches, its low-level lasers do not rely on heating the tissue, which can cause discomfort. Therefore, it allows patients to resume their normal activities immediately. This lowlevel laser therapy is approved for best use on the abdomen, hips and thighs; it can also be used on arms. The patient lies on a comfortable table for 20 minutes on each side while the five lasers are applied to the target areas simultaneously. The sessions are pain free and simple. Results That Work Thousands of patients in Doha have already tried this procedure. Six treatments over two to three weeks resulted in an average of 7- 20 cm reduction in circumferences around the waist, hips and thighs. So
imagine going from a large to a medium, or a medium to a small, just by relaxing for forty minutes, a few times a week. Tips For Starting: While using ZERONA and after each session: • Patients should drink a lot of water • Practice 20-30 minutes of physical activity • Decrease intake of carbohydrates on the days of your sessions • Follow a healthy diet with an adequate quantity of fat Where to get your Treatments: You can only find ZERONA in AMAZON DIET CENTER in Doha, which offers you a complementary plan starting with diet programs (diet paper or food delivery), ending with different machines and sessions for free to help you accelerate fat burning mechanisms. GET IN SHAPE THIS SUMMER
BY BAYVIEW 26 WELLNESS SPA AT MĂ–VENPICK TOWER & SUITES PHOTOGRAPHY JESSIE PALANCA CLOTHES BY ADIDAS AT SPORTS CORNER
Long hours of daylight, warm temperatures and the opportunity to get outside‌spring has finally arrived. Now it's time to start thinking about the lean, toned look you want for summer. Getting regular exercise can help prevent heart disease and it can keep your bones strong, relieves stress and helps you sleep better, giving you more energy to go out and have fun in the warm months. Being fit means having a healthy body that can participate in the activities that summer offers...no matter what your age. Stretching Is important for people of all ages. When you incorporate correct stretching techniques, you will see numerous benefits: your body will become more flexible; you will increase the mobility of your joints; it improves your circulation, posture and the range of movements of your limbs and joints, and it prevents injuries that usually occur while weight training or performing other exercises.
Side Neck Stretching Begin by facing forward. Drop your head toward your left shoulder, stretching the right side of the neck. Reach your left hand up and over your head, and bring it to the right ear, gently deepening the stretch. Hold that position for 15 seconds. Lift your head back to its normal upright position. Relax and repeat three times on each side.
Cardio Is one of the most important things you can do for your body. There's no 'right' cardio exercise and the best choice is the one you enjoy and the one you'll work hardest at, but there are some that work best if your goal is to blast calories and get in great shape. Jumping Rope Jumping rope is another caloriescorcher and, as an added bonus, a jump rope packs easily in your suitcase, making it an excellent portable exercise. Start by jumping for 1-2 minutes at a time, taking breaks by marching in place and swinging your rope in a figure eight motion. Continue alternating for 1020 minutes and, over time, gradually increase the amount of time you jump while decreasing your rests. You can add variety by trying different foot patterns (jumping on one foot, scissors, etc.)
Standing Leg Stretch Stand with good posture, contracting your abdominals. Place your right ankle onto your left knee, bend the knee of your standing left leg and push your bottom back. Keep your back flat and hold this stretch for 15 30 seconds, repeat on the other side.

fitness Crunches Are a lot like sit-ups, except that instead of lifting your entire back off the floor, you only lift your upper back. This isolates ("crunches") the ab muscles without engaging muscles in your hips. Crunches are also safer than sit-ups because they don't compress your spine as much. When paired with adequate weight loss, doing crunches regularly can lead to six-pack abs.
Raised Knee Crunches Lie on your back on the floor. Using a mat or carpeted surface is more comfortable. Place your hands behind your head, interlacing your fingers together. Raise your knees upwards towards your chest until they are in an upside down L-shape position in front of you and start the exercise once you have found your balance. Exhale as you crunch your upper body and inhale as you lower your upper body down back to the starting position in a slow, controlled manner maintaining your leg position and balance. Do not allow any longer than one count before starting the next rep to maintain pressure on the ab muscles.
The Single Leg Bridge Exercise Lay on your back with your knees bent and your feet under your knees. Tighten your abdominal and buttock muscles and slowly lift your hips up to create a straight line from your knees to shoulders. Slowly raise and extend one leg while keeping your pelvis raised and level. If your hips sag or drop, place the leg back on the floor and do a double-leg bridge until you become stronger. Hold the position for 10 seconds and lower. Repeat with the opposite leg. Make sure to maintain level hips throughout the exercise. It's better to hold the correct position for a shorter time than to go longer in the incorrect position.

Side Lunges Stand with your feet parallel, hip-width apart. Your hands are in a comfortable position to help you maintain your balance. Keep your head over your shoulders and your chin tipped and slightly upward. Inhale and slowly step to the right while keeping your weight into your left heel. Both feet are still facing forward. Once your right foot is firmly placed on the floor, begin to shift your weight toward the right foot, bending the right knee and pushing the hips back. Continue to lunge until your shinbone is vertical to the floor and your right knee is aligned with the second toe of your right foot. Your left leg should be as straight as possible and your body weight should be distributed into the right hip. The heels of both feet should stay flat on the floor. Your arms can be positioned where necessary to help maintain your balance. Exhale and push off firmly with your right foot, returning to starting position. Repeat the movement for the opposite sides for a total of 20 lunges.

EMOTIONAL EATING: HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND RECOVER FROM IT! BY CHRISTELLE ABI RACHED OF DIET DELIGHTS
From the moment a baby is born and his mother holds him close to nurse him, an emotional connection between being fed and being loved is created. This relationship gets reinforced every time parents use a sweet treat to comfort their sad child. Year after year, the child grows into an adult who is brought up on the idea that any void, any emotion can be “fed”. Driven by our Epicurean impulses, urged by our yawning belief that treats are mandatory; we have all, at times, experienced eating for reasons other than hunger. Whether to celebrate a success, reward ourselves or just as a pick-me up for our stress, fear, boredom or loneliness; food might serve for something bigger than just easing our physical hunger. But when this happens often or when food becomes the only mechanism a person uses to manage his emotions; then there’s a problem…this problem is called: Emotional Eating.
The physiological trigger for emotional eating:
Although most of the incentive behind emotional eating is acquired, the natural physiological chemistry explains the comfort the body finds in certain foods. First, when stress is chronic, as it is often in our hectic modern lives, it leads to high levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol triggers cravings toward salty, sweet and high fat foods and even encourages weight gain through physiological processes. On the other hand, certain foods – especially those high in carbohydrates – increase serotonin release, the mood-lifting neurotransmitter that makes us feel soothed and calm.
Overcome emotional eating by recognizing it… 1- Emotional eating comes out suddenly; physical hunger occurs gradually 2- You crave a specific food unlike when you’re physically hungry, when you’re open to options 3- You don’t stop eating when you’re full 4- Emotional eating will leave

Diets are not the answer. If you go for fad diets that leave your body starved for eating, you may be more likely to give in to your emotional eating. It’s a vicious cycle where your emotions trigger you to overeat, you beat yourself for getting off your weight loss track; you feel bad and you overeat again. Breaking the cycle will start by putting your emotional eating in control!
overeat, learn from your mistakes and start fresh again and again. Be kind to yourself. • Keep a food journal Jot down when and what you eat and score how hungry you feel when you ate it. This way you can track “if” and “when” you are eating for reasons other than hunger. Describe how you were feeling before and after eating, what or who was on your mind. Put a percentage for the food you ate out of physiological hunger and out of emotional hunger. • Fill the emotional void If it’s the stress that is pushing you to overeat, try stress management techniques like yoga, meditation and relaxation or even talk to a friend. If it’s boredom, try to keep yourself busy with other enjoyable activities like painting or dancing…find a new hobby! Make exercise a daily routine and get eight hours of sleep.
How to cope with your emotional eating?
When to seek professional advice?
behind a feeling of guilt, unlike physical hunger
Dieting is not the answer:
• Become your own therapist Self-talk is the best talk. Be indulgent and patient with the emotional eater inside you. Don’t tell yourself you can’t give in the craving –remember, the forbidden is extremely tempting. Just tell yourself to wait…and to give in to your craving moderately. Forgive yourself if you
If you’ve tried self-help options but you still can’t get control of your emotional eating, consider therapy with a professional mental health provider. Therapy will help you understand the motivation behind your emotional eating and help you learn new coping skills.

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING!
ACTIVATE YOUR METABOLISM TO SPEED UP WEIGHT LOSS
How many diets that end in failure are blamed on the mythical ‘slow metabolism’? Anyone who has ever struggled to shift a few pounds will be familiar with the problem – you’ve spent hours at the gym, virtually starved yourself and made yourself unpopular by refusing to eat your friend’s birthday cake, but that stubborn spare tire around your waist simply will not disappear. Time to point the finger at your metabolism, which seems incredibly reluctant to burn off even an ounce of fat. But is your metabolism the real culprit? Well, yes and no. Dr. Mohamud Verjee, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, explained: "While your metabolism does play a significant role in weight loss, the most important factor is a calorie deficit maintained over a prolonged amount of time. There is no way that your metabolism can make you gain or stay at the same weight if you consume less calories than you expend for several weeks – it’s simply a physical impossibility". While it’s true that some people do indeed have slower metabolisms than others, there are ways to boost the rate at which the body burns calories that will work for everyone. By understanding a few crucial facts about the way your body uses and stores energy, you can exploit your metabolism to speed up weight loss and give you the killer body you crave, while improving your all-round health and well-being at the same time.
Your Metabolism – the facts • Your metabolism is a series of complex chemical processes by which your body breaks down food and converts it into usable energy. It does this by combining oxygen from the air you breathe with calories consumed as food and drink. • Your body actually needs quite a lot of calories just to keep you alive, so the majority of the energy it produces is used for basic functions like breathing, circulating blood and repairing cells. This amount of energy – known as the basal metabolic rate – accounts for about 60 to 75 percent of the calories you burn each day, without you taking any physical activity at all. • The other two things your body uses energy for are processing food and physical activity. By altering the types and portion sizes of the food you eat and the amount of physical activity you take, you can increase the amount of calories you burn. • What’s more, by altering your body composition you can increase your basal metabolic rate, because people with more muscle mass burn more energy, even when they are resting.

wellness
SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR METABOLISM WORK FOR YOU?
1 2
EAT SMALL, FREQUENT MEALS: The frequent supply of calories stimulates your metabolism to keep working at a steady rate throughout the day. Aim for six small meals consumed at regular intervals through the day. Leaving long gaps between meals prompts your body to convert energy to fat for storage. Don’t skip breakfast! Eating early kick-starts your metabolism for the day. AVOID STARVATION DIETS: As well as
potentially depriving you of essential vitamins and minerals, starvation diets cause your metabolism to slow dramatically as your body tries to conserve energy. When you break your fast, your body will store fat at a faster rate than if you were eating regularly, so the effect is counterproductive. Furthermore, starvation diets are exhausting, difficult to maintain and cause muscle loss, which slows your metabolism further.
3
WATCH YOUR CARBS: Cutting carbs completely
from your diet is not recommended, but reducing the amount you eat as part of a general reducedcalorie diet is. Carbohydrates come in the form of starchy foods such as rice, potatoes, bread and pasta, and as sugars and fibre. They are the body’s primary source of energy and are therefore a very important food group, but eat too many and your body converts them into fat very quickly. Avoid refined sugars that are found in sweets, cakes, soft drinks and chocolate, and eat small portions of starchy foods, no bigger than your fist, with your meals. That huge plate of french fries is a definite no-no!
5 6
EAT MORE PROTEIN: Your body needs protein to build muscle and for repairing cells. Good sources of proteins are nuts, lean meats, the white flesh of poultry, fish, vegetables, beans, eggs and milk. Protein also takes more energy to digest and so gives your metabolism a natural boost. SLEEP WELL: Getting less than seven-anda-half hours sleep each night impairs the production of hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism, making weight gain more likely. Get plenty of rest to keep your metabolism ticking.
Following these tips, along with a caloriecontrolled diet and an exercise regime, will get your metabolism motoring and have you shedding the pounds slowly but surely. There are no short-cuts to weight loss…it’s all about patience, persistence and hard work. Boring, we know, but it’ll be worth it when you get to rock your new beach body this summer!

EXERCISE SMART, NOT JUST HARD: Pounding the treadmill for hours or cycling for miles on the static bike will burn plenty of calories and speed up your metabolism, but it will quickly return to normal after your workout. Incorporating some weight sessions into your fitness regime will keep your metabolism working at an elevated level for several hours after a workout, as your body uses energy to repair tired muscles. In addition, gaining muscle will make your metabolism work harder while you are resting, as muscles require more energy to maintain than fat and other tissues.

7 WAYS TO GET YOUR PATIO READY FOR WARM SEASON FUN
BY SUZY Q CACIC – BETTERDECORATINGBIBLE.COM
PHOTOS BY: GALEAZZO DESIGN, ALLWOOD CONSTRUCTION, CASA SMITH, ALEXANDRA LAUREN, COCO COZY, STRAIGHT LINE LANDSCAPE
With the weather getting hotter than ever this time of season, make sure you make the most of it with a comfortable, fun, and entertaining backyard patio. A patio gives your family and guests a place to relax, unwind, and enjoy a mini vacation away from the busy city. Here are our top tips to get your outdoor space ready for summer parties and relaxing in the sun!
1
POOL PREP – If you aren’t looking to go on vacation this year, why not create a VIP resort in the comfort of your own backyard? Prepare your pool for lots of lounging and fun in the sun with pool loungers and comfy striped cushions. Mini gazebos prepped over your loungers also serve as great protection from the scorching sun. Keep towels ready to go and roll them up hotel style at the foot of each lounger.
2
HIGH TECH – Bring movie night outdoors for a change with an outdoor television. Outdoor TVs are expanding in popularity and there is a reason they are so expensive. Don’t try using an indoor one outdoors – chances are it will break. Outdoor TVs are specially made to seal out moisture, keep out the sun’s rays, and withstand sizzling temperatures.
3
INVEST IN A PATIO HEATER – Also called mushrooms or umbrella heaters, you can generate radiant heat outdoors to extend the time you sit on your patio. There are lots of options to choose from like burners that burn petroleum gas or propane, and even electrically powered radioactive heaters that emit infrared energy. The choice is yours; just make sure you don’t go running inside when the evenings get chilly!

4
FOCUS ON LIGHTING – Paying attention to the right type of lighting can not only create a cozy mood and ambience, but it can also extend the life of your patio from a daily living space to one that can be enjoyed at night. String lights, lanterns, and even garden lights are become more environmentally friendly with the options of solar powered lights. With the popularity of eco-lights growing by the minute, there are lots of colours and styles to choose from.
5
SHINE IT UP - Give your patio a good scrub down! Throughout the year lots of dust, dirt, and even mold can build up on patio stones or on your wooden deck, so make sure you take the time to give everything a good clean. Patio stones can be cleaned easily with a broom and a mixture of water and bleach. To further get off dirt and grime, hose everything down with a powerful power wash and you should be good to go!
6
BRING IT TO LIFE – Wake up your patio with a colourful table runner and a bouquet of flowers from your own garden. Even a few bright pillows thrown on your sofa can work miracles, as do new seat cushions to replace your old, weathered down set from last year. Make sure to opt for outdoor rugs and fabrics that are UV resistant to get the most of your buck.
7
FIRE UP THE BARBIE! –
If you don’t already have a barbeque, you may want to seriously consider investing in one. Next to the fire pit, barbeques are usually the center of attention at any outdoor party. Make sure you buy a quality one with a heavy-duty stainless steal burner for durability, and cast-iron cooking grids to hold heat and provide great searing power.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME PHOTOGRAPHY JESSIE PALANCA
ABODE met Therese Groffen, the wife of His Excellency John Groffen, Netherlands Ambassador in Qatar, to hear her amazing story about decorating their house from scratch when they first moved to Doha.
When did you move to Qatar? A: I moved to Qatar in the beginning of August 2009. It was during Ramadan and I remember stepping out of the plane in this very humid and very hot weather. Our previous base was Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, a part of former Yugoslavia, where the weather is very different.
Being an Ambassador’s wife must be very challenging as you are relocating in a new country every four years. What are the main challenges? A: The main challenges of an ambassador's wife are the challenges that every expat women has. You must be very social and avoid being depressive by going to meet people and try to make the best of it. My main challenge coming here was to settle my daughter, who was very sad to leave her friends, and to find a good school for her where she could start her IB (International Baccalaureate). Fortunately she was accepted at the ASD (American School of Doha) where she was very happy. One of the challenges of this life is to let your children go back home, and
after two years she joined her sister in the Netherlands to go to college, and we started our new life without children, and missing them. The next challenge was to furnish the residence, which was completely empty. I remember entering the house, coming straight from the airport, and thinking: I will never be able to make something nice from this place. The place sounded hollow, and coming from a lovely house in Ljubljana, that had won a prize for architecture and was beautifully decorated by designers, this was very depressing. The ministry gave me a sum of money to furnish the house under one condition: the decoration must be neutral, because the next ambassador will also have to live with this furniture.
Where did you source your new furniture? A: One week after our arrival my husband had to leave Doha for two weeks, leaving me with the task of furnishing the residence and I confess I really doubted to succeed. The next day I went to visit a lot of furniture shops. As soon as I founded Ka International on Salwa road, I knew
Therese Groffen
I would succeed, because it was completely my taste. I like green, and my husband likes blue, so I made a mix of those colours. I went to Bo Concept for my husband’s study and also to Apollo. The furniture for the garden I ordered from England. The ministry provides us with dining tables, because it is very difficult to find tables that can be changed to seat up to 24 people. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs we have a room with art of Dutch artists that we can choose to decorate our residences. My husband chose some art, but it was very difficult for him to choose the paintings, because he had no clue what I was buying. Coming home he realized the colour scheme didn't fit with the colours I
68
ABODE June - m26-.indd 68
5/27/13 6:18 PM
décor
had chosen in the living room, so we put these paintings in the dining room and upstairs, and we put our own stuff in the living room. It was the first time I had to furnish a house in such a short time. Luckily the consul, who was a woman, also liked very much to decorate houses, so we often went to shops together, and I could discuss the colour schemes with her. In two weeks everything was ordered, and in November/ December everything was ready.
Are you pleased with the outcome? A: I am very happy with the outcome. I had my doubts with this new rule of the ministry that the embassies (so mostly the wives of ambassadors)
have to choose the decoration of the residence themselves, but once I started the decoration and finished it I was very happy to live in furniture that I had chosen and that I like.
Your husband’s mandate here in Qatar is coming to an end next month. Probably you’ll have to do the same in your new house, how do you feel about that? A: I don't know yet if I have to furnish the new residence in Abuja, Nigeria, where we are moving in September. I will find out when I get there.
What makes any room feel homey? A: I think nice furniture, nice paintings on the wall, good soft lighting on side tables and nice flowers make a house feels homey. Here in Doha we are very happy to be able to buy flowers at Plaza Al Hollandi, a Dutch flower shop. The owner, Hans Steeneveld, helps the embassy tremendously when we have a party, so that we, coming from a country of flowers, can act as ambassadors of a flower country.

Spray paint your empty tin cans. Don't be too concerned with coverage where the paper is going to go – just make sure the exposed edges are well covered.
2. Measure the circumference
and height with either tape & ruler or…. just wrap the paper with the right side facing in and make a pencil mark.
What you'll need
3. Cut paper to correct size and • Empty, clean food cans • Spray paint • Decorative paper • White glue and spray varnish • Pencils • Scissors or guillotine
coat wrong side with Mod Podge or glue (use one suitable for paper so your paper doesn’t wrinkle).
4. Wrap around can carefully,
aligning paper evenly with the top lip and press to smooth it around.
5. Apply Mod Podge to the
outside liberally and smooth with the brush (a foam brush might give a smoother result). Let dry.
6. For the shortest can, cut out a
circle of felt for the bottom for a neater finish because you can see it. Glue them all together (if you want) and Voila!

2.
GENTLY TOAST SOME CARDAMON
“Puffed up and fluffy” are the best words to describe soufflé. It is one of France’s poshest desserts and is considered a fine dining export. The main ingredients are egg yolks and egg whites and when beaten perfectly and baked impeccably you will melt in awe and wonder why you didn’t try doing this at home sooner. Blame it on the long running campaign that these breathtaking beauties are too complex for mere home -cook. But ABODE stepped out of this fear and asked Pastry Chef Reza Fahlevi of Gourmet House at Kempinski Residences & Suites, Doha to show us a no-fail, step by step process in doing this heavenly dessert. Waste no time and let’s start whisking!
More tips in making soufflé:
3.
PLACE MILK AND SUGAR IN A BOWL
4.
ADD CRUSHED CARDAMON TO MILK MIXTURE
1 Do not open the oven while soufflé is cooking or you might prevent it from puffing up perfectly. 2 Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. 3 Have fun!

Procedure:
STEP 1 Brush 5 ramekins with soft butter, then coat with sugar. Put the prepared ramekins in the fridge. Set an oven rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 180C. STEP 2 Place cardamom in a hot pan, till there is scent coming out and crush it. STEP 3 In a saucepan place the milk, sugar, and the crushed cardamom. Stir while heating and remove from the heat. STEP 4 In small bowl combine sifted flour, corn flour and add the egg yolk. Whisk until smooth and add a small amount of warm milk. Then pour the egg mixture slowly to the saucepan with the remaining warm milk. STEP 5 Cook custard over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened, but do not boil. Remove from heat. Let it cool down. STEP 6 Scale 50 grams of cardamom base (custard) in stainless bowl. STEP 7 Put the egg whites in the bowl of a standing mixer, or large non-reactive bowl. Beat on medium until frothy; then gradually add the sugar and increase speed to high. Beat until the whites hold a stiff but not dry peak. STEP 8 Working quickly, fold about a 1/4 meringue into the cardamom base then fold in remaining whites until blended. STEP 9 Gently ladle or spoon the soufflé mixture into the ramekins, and place on a baking tray. PLANNING PARTY FOR KIDS
BY MOONA MASRI-WHITICE
Great Idea:
Hosting your child’s party at home is supposed to be fun, but organizing it can turn into a stressful and challenging process if you do not plan ahead. Here are my tips for getting a handle on the whole event.
Step 1
Add a special touch to your party with a homemade birthday banner. Banner can be made with 8x11 paper stapled to ribbon.
CHOOSE A THEME
A party theme simplifies decision making
Before you buy one thing, the first step is to sit down and plan out your theme for the party. Why? 1. It simplifies decision making. 2. It helps keeps everything coordinated 3. It gets your child more involved, as it highlights their interests. If your child is old enough to have a say in the process, then make sure they get excited with the theme you both choose. My daughter wanted a night owl sleepover!

Step 2
DECORATIONS
Coordinate your décor in both colour and feel
{
Things you can use for serving:
Choose a main colour for the party. Your child might love purple so make sure you keep that in mind. Decorate the party with unique decorations, favours, and personalized party products you can find online on websites like (www.etsy.com or http://pinterest.com/bpartyideas/free-printable-partydecorations/). You can download name tags, labels and birthday tags. Think out of the box when decorating. I printed owls I found at Etsy and put them everywhere.
• Don’t be afraid to mix and match colours • Decorate tables with small boxes filled with cookies, fruit and candy • Make customized water bottles with your child’s name • Have bowls filled with popcorn, Cheetos, small crackers or pretzels in matching colours • Use Cereal boxes cut and covered in colored paper to match décor Places to buy party things: • Hallmark at The center, Villaggio and Landmark • Royal Events in Royal Plaza • Crazy Party • Tazmeen in The Centre

Step 3
CHOOSE THE MENU
Make the food fun and easy to eat
The Cake:
Once you have decided on your theme then you can choose the menu. Pay close attention to sales and stock up on crackers, cookies, chips, fruits and vegetables, and juice in the weeks leading up to the party. Some fun ideas the main course are tacos, shawarmas and hamburgers. Keep treats simple, but decorate and package them creatively; the snacks should be fun, but safe to eat. Serve fresh fruits like grapes, apple wedges and bananas and make them fun with chocolate fondue!
The dessert table is the highlight of the party. Make sure the cake is served and displayed on its own table à la Martha Stewart. Have various other matching treats on the table. This will make the whole party look like it was done professionally. I used white shoe boxes filled with owl cookies next to the cake.
Set the table to match your theme. If you can’t find a table cloth in the right colour, buy a set of sheets or kitchen towels! Cut kitchen towels to make the individual place settings.
"Use your imagination and make your party as creative as possible" Moona Whitice
Step 4
CREATE THE GUEST LIST Ask your child who they wish to invite, then plan for the number of people you can easily and comfortably fit in your home. Pick the party date and time. (Parties are generally 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours long) unless they are a sleepover. Decide on the activities and prizes for games. Great DVDs and music are all teenagers need to enjoy an evening in. Stay organized by following these simple and time saving steps: • Download a checklist from www.getbuttonedup.com or on www.evite.com/app/party/checklist/view.do • Send out your invitations – either hand deliver through the child’s school or use www.evite.com to send them via email. • Games. Look for ways to entertain the kids. Go to www.birthdaypartyideas.com for suggestions.

Let’s Celebrate
Cancer Survivors Day On June 2nd 2013!
PHOTOGRAPHY JESSIE PALANCA
To celebrate life, ABODE met with two local cancer survivors who shared their stories with us and provided inspiration for all…. Sameer Ahmed,
28 years old, two-year Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor Sameer is a young, fit and healthy looking guy. You would never think he was affected by cancer. He fought his disease and is now doing well, working full-time here in Doha as an administrative manager. He is committed to create more awareness about cancer and its cure! Here is his touching story.
“I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma – a cancer of the lymphatic system, kind of a blood disorder – twice. The first time I had it I didn’t really realize the gravity of it and wasn’t really worrying about all its symptoms, like night sweats, loss of appetite, constant fever and loss of weight, like 30 pounds. All this happened over a period of three to four months, so you don’t really put it all together. Until I had a swelling in my neck, so I went to the doctor and even though I was feeling better through the medications, I was starting to get progressively worse.
I always tried to be positive. I was in university in Canada then and during a vacation here in Doha to visit my parents I decided to have further checks at a private clinic. Even here in Doha I would have had to wait few months for a biopsy, so me and my family decided to go and do it in India , as we have relatives there. Afterwards I had my stem-cell transplant in Canada and then two years ago I relocated here in Qatar. I’ve been here doing follow-up at Al Amal and it’s all good. Al Amal is a really good hospital, but I really feel there isn’t enough
SAMEER’S NEW OUTLOOK ON LIFE “I don’t waste time. In the past I was thinking I’ll do them when I’m older but you can’t do that anymore, so if you feel like it, go and do it. I’m very grateful and full of respect for people like Margarita [and the Ladies of Harley], because they are very active and have a positive influence towards cancer. I actually feel the need to build more awareness in men regarding cancer. So I’d like to start something about this. I play sports, I joined a basketball team here, I play in a men’s league so I’m trying to inform guys as much as I can. Young people especially need to understand that everybody is at risk, but above all they need to know that if they develop it, there’s life out there after cancer!”

people awareness about cancer in general, people don’t know about the hospital itself either. I got to know about it and about support groups thanks to my Mum as she met Margarita Zuniga, from the Ladies of Harley, and Suzanne (the fellow survivor) who gave her advice and support. It’s actually thanks to people
like them, that cancer patients and their family actually cope with the disease. I’m feeling really good these days and I feel very lucky. I go to Toronto once every six months for my follow-ups, and do some follow-ups here too. My biggest piece of advice for any cancer patient would be to be positive. I know it sounds
cliché but I can only speak for my experience, because when I first found out, my first thought was ‘Oh, why me?’ but I kept thinking ‘I have so much left to do! This can’t be the end of it.’ So I kept driving myself out of it and I did it!”
Suzanne Kanaan,
54 years old, 5-year ovarian cancer survivor Suzanne is a radiant and gorgeous woman. She has three stunning daughters. They are originally from Jordan and have lived here in Doha for the last 20 years.
“I was leading a very busy life, I was working and juggling life with a busy family of five. I had few symptoms and was moving offices at the time, but I just didn’t take them seriously and simply thought ‘Oh I’m going to be 50’ so I ignored them. I used to go out every night. I had a very, very busy social life, but always thought I conducted a healthy lifestyle. Then I actually realized I had missed two checkups that I used to do every year. Those two years I missed were actually key.
I was browsing to try to understand but it was actually scaring me more, so I decided to stop worrying and just do whatever I have to do from the doctors. Shortly [thereafter] I started the chemo and because of it I haven’t seen my daughters getting married, graduating. It was so heartbreaking, but I had to do it!
I was in very good hands at Al Amal hospital; I was looked after by a very good Qatari doctor. He was always very calm, supportive and always assured me I was going to survive. He and his I went to the medical centre and the team really made the difference with doctor noticed straightaway that there their professionalism and kindness. And was an ovarian cyst, so she referred me looking back in the years I can really see to go to Al Ahli and I went immediately. how everything is improving year after year. I still go there to do my routine Those days were very difficult. The check-up: my MRIs, mammograms most worrying part was when I started and everything runs so smoothly, in 20 checking the internet about my diagnosis. minutes max and I’m done with it all.
SUSANNE’S NEW OUTLOOK ON LIFE “I feel great. I feel really good. I try to maintain my health. I watch what I eat and I ask advice of the doctors. I try to balance my diet. This illness has been a life experience and as a Saudi friend told me (a fellow survivor too), this experience enriched us and made us stronger and we learned a lot from it! Now nothing upsets me. Nothing. And I feel sorry for people who are nervous, uptight, who make their life miserable, it’s not worth it. Just be positive, move on, and love the people that you’re with. Life is too short. Just live it and live it positively!”
In my case it was vital to have a doctor I trusted, and always felt I had a safe place I could go. Also Hyad cancer support group and Al Hibba cancer fundraisers were key for me. The programs at Al Hyad in particular are great, here is where you speak and you see patients and you share your experiences. I think

awareness is very important. People from all nationalities can be found there and everybody can ask anything, there are no silly questions. They do chemo sessions with new patients, holding their hands, staying with them, spending quality time with them. I like to go and see them myself. To see people like me who have made it gives [them] hope.”
LADIES OF HARLEYS • The Ladies of Harley® (L.O.H.®) continue on their mission to save lives by spreading cancer awareness in a collaborative partnership with Supreme Council of Health and Qatar Cancer Society. • National Cancer Survivors Day marks a day where people all over the world honour people with a history of cancer. Ladies of Harley® (L.O.H.®) want to acknowledge everyone who supports survivors in their fight for life. • Thank you to all the families, friends, Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care, and Qatar National Cancer Care and Research. • We also like to thank Harley-Davidson® Qatar, Harley Owners Group MENA and all the H.O.G members for their continuous support in our efforts to raise cancer awareness.
USEFUL INFORMATIONS from SUPREME COUNCIL OF HEALTH What new methods of cancer treatment and prevention are being implemented at Hamad Medical Corporation? A: Over the past two years HMC has embarked on a journey to transform how we deliver cancer services to the people of Qatar. HMC is focusing on early detection, rapid and definitive diagnosis, comprehensive treatment and ongoing care (including secondary prevention). One significant change has been the creation of Cancer Multidisciplinary Teams (known as MDTs), that are specific to each major tumor group. To date, HMC has established MDT groups for the following cancers: Breast, GI, Urology, Neurosurgery, Hepatabillary, Head and Neck, Thoracic, Gynecology, Dermatology, Hematology, Lymphoma, Pediatrics and Palliative Care. These teams bring together a variety of specialists and clinicians, which ensures the right care and treatment at the right time for our patients.
What are the average wait-times for patients diagnosed with cancer for biopsies and chemotherapy? A: The Qatar National Cancer Strategy gives clear indication that all suspected cancer referrals should be seen in a specialist clinic within 48 hours of referral. The urgent referral process has been introduced, with all suspected cancers being processed through a fast track system.
How can people who are living with the disease and their families contact or access new programs for treatment? A: HMC has created a new role called Patient Pathway Coordinator which guides cancer patients through the emotional and clinical journey of their diagnosis and treatment. These specialists will play a crucial role in coordinating a cancer patient’s care. They work with the cancer patient on every step of their journey, right from the point of diagnosis, with the goal of ensuring a seamless care pathway and take into consideration a patient’s nonmedical and support needs as well as their medical needs.

MY NEW LIFE IN DOHA PHOTOGRAPHY JESSIE PALANCA
This month ABODE met His Excellency Guido De Sanctis, the new Italian Ambassador in Qatar.

people You recently joined the Italian Embassy here in Doha. Where was your last assignment and how is your new life in Qatar? A: My last assignment was in Benghazi, Libya, where I spent two years during and after the 2011 revolution. This assignment to Doha is my first posting as a Head of Mission and it looks like a tough challenge. I am sure it will be made easier by the hospitality of Qatari people, by the leisure facilities offered in this growing country. Thanks to the diplomatic and expatriate community in Doha which is highly motivated and cooperative.
How would you describe the relationship between Italy and Qatar? There is a well-rooted mutual knowledge, which makes everything easier, but there is also a huge potential to be exploited in many fields. Italy and Qatar share a very important general approach to a constructive foreign policy and towards international economic integration. As I said, all Qatari circles have a profound knowledge of our country and they know very well what we can offer as a political,
FOR MORE INFORMATION
commercial and cultural partner and we must try to respond to their high expectations. The signs of an Italian presence in Doha grow every day.
Have you got any upcoming projects to promote business between the two Countries? As you know, Qatar is engaged on a daily basis in modernizing the country and in opening it to the world. I can recall that the main Italian companies in the construction sector have taken part in the tenders connected with the realization of rail public transport in Doha; many Italian retailers are present in all commercial malls around the Capital and in The Pearl. Several Italian architects are engaged in the realization of public buildings and private residences around Doha. As for future projects, we are going to launch the Trade Development Section of the Embassy in the next weeks and this will ensure a closer assistance to small and medium enterprises, especially when they need to introduce themselves to the Qatari market.
Last November The Italian Strategic Fund (ISF), controlled by the CDP and Qatar Holding (QH), signed an agreement for the establishment of a joint venture called ‘IQ Made in Italy’, including
food production, fashion, design, tourism and lifestyle. How is this cooperation developing? There are many initiatives, like for instance the takeover by Qatar of tourist premises in a beautiful and famous place like Costa Smeralda in Sardinia or the participation in renowned hotels like the “Four Seasons” in Florence. These are important steps, aimed at supporting the tourism industry in Italy. The joint-venture “IQ”, however, has been conceived as a wider and long-term project that can benefit many companies. The joint venture is commencing its work now under positive auspices and I am sure we will soon hear good news about it!
How do you plan to interact with the local Italian residents? How many are registered in the country? We have almost 700 Italian citizens registered here, plus a number of frequent visitors. Not only it is our duty to support our community here, but it is also very pleasant to have the occasion to exchange views on Qatar and on opportunities of cooperation. I already met a large number of our citizens living in Doha and I have the impression that my fellow citizens here represent Italy in a most significant way.

A MARK OF SUCCESS FEATURE COORDINATED BY MARLYNNE MALLARI – DELA PENA PHOTOGRAPHY JESSIE PALANCA
What’s the mark of success? Many will say it’s defined by how many properties you have, how many people you handle or how much money you have but is that really the best summation of this word? In pursuit of a deeper meaning, ABODE sought this answer from our interview with the newest General Manager of Mövenpick Tower and Suites, Doha, Ghada Sadek.

“
What you see is what you get,” exclaimed the first female General Manager at Mövenpick Tower and Suites, Doha. Enthused with generosity and a strong focus, Ghada Sadek is the new muse of leadership in the country’s emerging hospitality market. As we settled in for the interview, we were immediately drawn to her charismatic aura, her warm hospitality and honesty. At the beginning of her career she said it was difficult for her to balance work and family but as she matured and grew wise over her 22 years of industry experience, juggling two ‘jobs’ at the same time has poised her to embark on her new role as the captain of 275 employees.
WE ARE ALREADY IN THE 21ST CENTURY When asked about taking over a male dominated position she replied, “We are already in the 21st century. The number of women in leadership positions is escalating. This is due, in part, to women's increased educational opportunities. We are seeing positive results, not to mention the occasional pressure from customers and other constituents. The real challenge is that GMs are no longer typical representatives for guests and department managers, they are serving outside stakeholders and this will be enforced in the future.” For Ghada, the wave of opportunities for women has started to rise and we are seeing this happening right this moment.
pollution caused by countries’ industrial emissions. As well, the development of sustainable building regulations underlines Qatar’s awareness and commitment to sustainable construction as the country prepares to invest over $70 billion in essential infrastructure by 2022.” She continued to describe Qatar’s vital position in saving the environment. For her part, she continuously prepares her staff to be educated and knowledgeable about ecological practices. “Mövenpick Tower & Suites Doha is a certified green globe hotel. A yearly audit is conducted to check and evaluate green practices in the hotel through a professional team on all hotel operational aspects such as water, energy consumption and the employees’ awareness of the hotel’s role to increase green thinking.”
WORK WITH PASSION AND DELIVER EFFECTIVELY
GREEN & SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS ADVOCATE
These words had been her siren song when she started her career and the same tune applies to this day. Ghada doesn’t just sit on her office, she keeps on working on many projects, making sure that each has a set deadline so as not to overlook every detail. And when she’s in the car, she still works, answering the phone and closing her deals. “I am not advocating to be on the phone while driving, still be safe,” she cautions with a smile. “When working, give everything you have, pour your heart out and maintain a positive outlook, because it will show in all that you do. Some people will take advantage of you, however a clear conscience is still my haven.”
Qatar is pushing green and sustainable projects, as a Green LEED Associate she made sure her initiatives are linked to Qatar’s projects and her hotel. “Qatar played a major role in sustainable projects by hosting the largest conference COP 18 in its history last November. This is the 18th year the world’s nations gathered to discuss climate change and how to deal with environmental issues like
As we concluded our interview with Ghada, we found our answer. Riches are secondary. The mark of success is your character: maintaining a solid honesty, respect and love toward your family and people around you, discounting any position you may have.

journalism, her second passion is art, so she moved to New York and took a one-to-one course at Christie’s. She says “art was always a passion, but a hobby not a profession. My husband and I are art collectors”. She opened Anima Gallery a year ago with the help of her sister, Baria Abdel Rahim, who is the Administration Manager. Baria studied at Business School in Lebanon and then worked in the human resources division of a large corporation. Baria looks after the administrative side of the business and Ghada concentrates on the art itself.

The gallery has an art exhibition every two months and includes local, regional and international artists, as Ghada chooses artists from all over world. They also get invited to tender to provide artwork for new sites, such as hotels. Ghada tells me, “The clientele of the gallery is growing very well. Art in Qatar is booming. Qatar is now the art centre as there are so many museums and galleries. We are just part of new wave. Sotheby’s just had an auction in Qatar and they sold the most art ever, outside of London! There are art investors here, not a huge number but an effective number.” The other part of the business is an art education centre. Schools send their children to the gallery to see the new exhibitions. They also provide art lessons and photography lessons. Three mornings a week, oil painting classes take place for ladies and mixed classes in the afternoons. There are also children’s art classes on Saturdays. The teachers are from VCU Qatar and other art education establishments.

The international staff complement the menu and the art displayed in the lounge comes from all over the world. You will feel comfortable going alone to the Anima Lounge, as you can learn more about art while enjoying a fresh juice or a well balanced meal. It’s an immersive experience, with art books everywhere, art on the TVs, and beautiful paintings and sculptures surrounding you. Nabil Asfar is the Lifestyle Specialist Consultant at the Anima Lounge. He advises on all the healthy food and drinks and supervises the chef to make sure the menu is well balanced. He is an Adonis of a man who is Lebanese Canadian and used to be a physical trainer at the Canadian Naval Base. He studied nutrition, then owned a gym and has been a personal trainer for thirty years. Nabil says, “The idea is to create a healthy balanced meal along with a relaxed atmosphere and to come and enjoy your time. We are giving people a healthy alternative, as around the city it’s hard to find a place that is healthy”.

Anima Lounge doesn’t add preservatives to the food and they use natural and organic produce, as much they can get in Doha. Nabil also monitors the recipes, eliminating butter where he can, substituting natural products such as olive oil and concentrating on herbs to use as seasoning. Some dishes come with sauce, but it is offered on the side. Anima Lounge aims to provide clean, consistent and tasty meals and it’s all about choice. Both regular and gluten free pasta are on offer. Sandwiches can be built on low carb bread, gluten free bread or regular bread – a choice for everyone’s taste. Instead of adding sugar to juice, they create fresh juices by Nabil, as healthy as they are refreshing, each packed with anti-oxidants. “Drink Your Salad” has cleverly been designed to match our fast paced lifestyle.

It’s a whole meal in a filling refreshing drink that gives you the energy you need – and you can order it to go; healthy fast food here at last! Another juice you might be interested in is the “Anti-Wrinkle”, which includes the very important ingredient, kale. Kale contains anti-inflammatory properties, lowers blood sugar and is full of anti-oxidants. If you fancy a refreshing salad, The Quinoa Salad introduces the delicious quinoa seed from Peru, which has a low glycemic index, is high in amino acids, gluten free and high in protein which means it’s a great alternative for vegetarians. It’s the same idea as the soya bean. For those with a sweet tooth, the desserts at the Anima Lounge are all light (diet). For instance, they don’t use butter in the Anima Cheese Cake. Nabil cheekily says “the menu is to diet for!”
If you want to try something that’s exclusive to the Anima Lounge, go with friends and taste the Yerba Mate tea. It originates from Argentina and is drunk a lot in Lebanon, however, people drink it at home—it’s never available in restaurants. This tea has different amino acids and lots of vitamins to enhance your energy level as it gives alkaline to your system; it is not acidic. It also relaxes the muscles. Nabil is on hand if you want to ask advice about what to eat or drink to ensure a well-balanced meal. He adds, “The restaurant comes with the lifestyle – it is one part. How much are you eating… drinking…sleeping? [It’s about] educating the customer”.

ABODE talks to Liu Wei the Tea Mistress of Victoria Tea Lounge When can you say a tea is perfectly prepared? at Grand Heritage Doha Hotel and Spa A: After three to five minutes in hot water, and when you can smell its flavour.
When and where did you learn the art of serving/making tea? A: My first experience with the art of serving and making tea was at my previous job at the Beijing Tea Lounge. I learned all about tea, about its history, its benefits toward our health, and even the process of transforming the tea leaves to loose tea. Serving tea is another matter, as there is a special way to serve it; or as we call it, a Tea Ceremony ; also there is a special manner when it comes to tea serving. Back in China, we really value the tea, as it is good for our health, and our digestion process. Teas play an important role in our life. To us, tea is not only a beverage but also a culture. We even compare it to human characteristics, for example
we say about its fragrance it is not aggressive; it is pleasant.
What are the most popular teas? A: In my opinion I would say jasmine tea is the most popular, at least in our hotel.
Why it’s best to use loose leaf rather than tea bags? A: There is a difference between loose
Tips in preparing the best tea A: If we are talking about Green tea, I
tea and tea bags, like the size of leaves: tea bags are filled with tiny pieces of dull, cracked leaves and usually it is added accidently. Loose tea on the other hand is made out of a fresh, whole leaf. Tea leaves contain essential oils, which gives it its delightful flavour that lasts for a long period. Tea bags can’t keep their flavour for that long. I mean, you can use the tea leaves twice and they will still give you a good flavour. Also, tea bags are made to be a convenient quick replacement, for tea leaves. But true tea lovers enjoy their tea loose and served in a pot and tea cup.
need you to put in consideration that there are several kinds of green tea, so according to the kind of tea, water temperature varies from 60 to 95 degrees. But for black tea it has to be from 85 to 95 degrees. • You need to soak the tea in the water for three minutes if it’s green tea and five minutes for black tea. • Brewing time can be approximately the same timing as the soaking for each tea type. • Once it is done, use a tea warmer to keep it fresh for refilling.

WHAT A MEGAWORLD!
BY SUSANNA WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY JESSIE PALANCA
ABODE chats to Joseph Rivera, the vivacious and charming Vice President of Sales at Megaworld, to find out why it’s the right time to invest in property in the Philippines.
FOR MORE INFORMATION JOSEPH RIVERA,
Megaworld is different from other players in the property scene in the Philippines because it is owned by one of the wealthiest people in the Philippines, Andrew Tan. It has the largest market share in residential condo development in the country and has a great reputation. It is debt free and stable so there is no need to worry about investing your money with them. They are confident in selling to Filipinos globally because, similar to other countries such as India, the Philippines’ largest export is manpower. More than 70 per cent of buyers of Manila condos last year were Filipinos who work overseas. Doha was chosen as the regional hub for Middle East & Africa as 136,000 Filipinos live here (out of the total population 1.8 million) and so have a high spending power. Access to the country is very easy and it is very convenient to travel to other countries. The office space is affordable and of course, it almost goes without saying that Qatar is the richest country in the world!
Megaworld operates by appointing “an army” of agents; both Filipinos, who work in their spare time, as well as local property agents who sell on their behalf in the Middle East. They report to one Country Manager and Megaworld offers advertising support and funding for events. Megaworld in the Middle East is promoting the Philippines and the products; if people decide to purchase property, all paperwork and money is exchanged in the Philippines. At present, good sales investment is coming from the UK, Italy and Kuwait. Joseph was chosen for the position of Vice President of Sales because of his extensive real estate background and experience. He is a resident of Doha and is under the proud sponsorship of Direct Real Estate. He has also worked for Megaworld since 2000. His wife joined Qatar Airways and Joseph migrated to Doha too! Megaworld has a target revenue of at least 3 billion pesos this year. So far they have achieved 400 million, however,

With that in mind, Ford’s designers have worked hard to ensure the interior of the Focus ST is a great place to be, helping the driver to feel as connected to the vehicle as possible. The interior of the core Focus model is already designed with a “cockpit” feel. In the ST variant, that sporty feeling is heightened with everything the driver touches and feels reinforcing that it is unmistakably an ST.
Touring 3,000 miles across 13 countries It's the kind of road trip that performance car enthusiasts dream of: A week-long, 3,000 mile (5,000km) driving adventure through 13 countries in one of the most hotlyanticipated new cars of 2013. Nissan is teaming up with French publishing house L'Ecurie and INTERSECTION Magazine to participate in the 2013 Gumball 3000 Rally - a non-competitive, pan-European parade of the world's most exciting and desirable cars - starting in Copenhagen on 18th May 2013.The entry will be giving the millions of spectators expected to line the route a first glimpse of the exciting new Nissan 370Z Nismo in action. Gumball has a great heritage, providing a great platform to bring Nismo's digital age performance to the streets of Europe. Visit the Nissan Media Channel on www.nissan-me.com

TOP OF THE CLASS
Your head, your style, your personality, you’re A-Class BY DELIAH FURCOI
Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the exclusive dealers of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, launched the highly-awaited sporty A-Class 250 and 45 today during a spectacular event entitled the A-Class Lounge (#aclasslounge) at the company’s Salwa Road showroom.
A true stunner under the shade of the ever growing jungle of metal and steel structures, the all new Mercedes Benz A-Class 250 sport comes alive. First of all, it looks hot! With its diamond radiator grille flanked by large air scoops, the car needs no introduction. Its 18-inch fivespoke AMG light-alloy wheels go well with its sculptured low-slung body. Through the spokes peek red brake callipers, with perforated discs in front. It is a progressive styling that conveys speed, aggression and sophistication, with none of the baggage that often comes with heritage. This car literally marks a new beginning for the A-class. The cabin is modern, sporty and refreshingly different from all the rest. You see wide swathes of simulated carbonfibre trim on the fascia. This is lined with red-lined circular aircon vents that look
fit to compete with my new designer handbag. Bucket seats that are more intelligent than my lazy boy at home. This inconspicuous good looker can touch top speeds at a leisurely sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.6 seconds! Its steering is confident and effortless, leaving onlookers speechless; its unique performance speaks volumes. This beauty is easily the most adventurous hot-hatch in town! Definitely an ABODE Hot Pick this month!
