behind the scenes
This May ABODE dives headfirst into the exciting world of travel. Whether you are heading for business or pleasure, you need to be prepared with attire that will suit every occasion. Business travellers will appreciate the sharpness of the Urban Dweller, our wardrobe section for men on the go while women will appreciate the Escape Plan where we highlight Paule Ka’s spring style for luxurious clothing. We bring you the latest in Spring Summer 2012 looks from Nina Ricci, BCBGMAXAZRIA and accessories from a host of brands which includes the latest in sun glasses from design houses. Continuing the theme of travel, we bring you stories of exclusive luxury stays at The St. Regis Hotel in Miami, Florida and Qatar and the chic Art Deco style of the Chatwal Hotel in Manhattan, New York. Frankfurt is our destination of the month, with skylines and post modern skyscrapers that belie the city’s 2,000 years of history. Our feature on the world famous St. Regis Butler Service shows how this unique experience will prove that having a butler available to tend to your needs will truly enhance your travel experience. Our food section brings you recipes from chefs who travelled almost 8,000 miles from Peru, to give Qatar its first taste of Peruvian cuisine. We consult our chocolate expert from the InterContinental Doha The City, to give us advice on how to temper chocolate to create great dinner treats. As summer is just starting, it’s imperative that you remain health conscious and we bring you workouts and tips on cooking healthy food whilst our home section explores the interiors of Vapiano at The Gate and Nusantao, Four Seasons Hotel’s latest offering. In our people section we speak to His Excellency John Groffen, the Ambassador of The Netherlands who offers his impression of Qatar, a country whose people continue to impress him with their “can do” attitude of moving forward yet at the same preserving their heritage for the coming generation. Ayman Lotfy, General Manager of the Wyndham Grand Regency Hotel adds to that, and calls Qatar “the golden oasis,” where industries need to keep pace with Qatar’s development. The increase of women in the work force empowered by the Qatari government is yet another reason to rejoice, says Elsbeth Blekkenhorst, Co-Founder and Director of Global Women Qatar. We were also honoured to speak with Rizon Jet’s CEO Captain Hassan Al Mousawi and listen as he explained about the advantages and affordability of hiring a chartered jet when you consider flying to your next destination. We hope you enjoy planning your next summer sojourn in the following pages.

The Escape Plan The Paule Ka woman is on vacation in Acapulco, the beach resort of the sixties jet-set. Sometimes she is spotted in her tight-waisted jacquard dress, carrying her basket through the authentic fifties setting of the Boca Chica Hotel. At other times, she is languorous in shorts beside the lagoon-blue swimming pool, expecting Elvis Presley to appear at any moment. Come sunset, she lounges around in a small, panther-skin coat, sipping her cocktail as she looks out on the sunset. • Photography VeNetIA SCOTT • Model Jessica Stam • Location Boca Chica Hotel

Cotton Pique Serge Cajfinger is the artistic designer behind the Paule Ka label. The label rings like a dance on rhythmic beats, inspired from the colours of Serge Cajfinger’s Brazilian childhood. He uses black and white, throughout the seasons from monochromatic flashes to pastel tones. The skirt suit, the bow, the organza and the famous black dresses have remained the signature of Paule Ka for the past twenty years. We love his accessory collection! The signature basket, clutch purse, created in 1995, has been re-invented each season (it pays hommage to the lovely Audrey Sisal Hairband Hepburn who wore one with her mink coat).

Nina Ricci A Retro Spring collection Peter Copping, NinA Ricci's fashion designer, shows an uplifting, feminine and floral collection inspired by the richness of fabrics, colours and prints paying homage to Zina de Plagny, the Russian artist who collaborated with Nina Ricci in the 1930s and 1940s. Copping plays with the graphic elements of her patterns and the texture of her fabrics introducing a new dimension to superimposed classical shapes. Faithful to the spirit of the Ricci woman, Copping modernizes the proportions in an original way. A playful silhouette that confirms the strength and the singularity of the Nina Ricci woman. Enjoy!

Sun Gazing
UV vs Polarised, which way to go, facts that everyone must know… Despite the fact that the sun is over 93 million miles away, its rays pose important health and ocular dangers. The principal danger posed by the sun is in the form of ultraviolet radiation or for short, UV radiation. You are probably aware of the danger posed by UV radiation to your skin, but you may not realize that exposure to UV radiation can harm your eyes and affect your vision as well.

the facts Typically, most sun wear lenses will be UV absorptive to some degree. If lenses are marked CR-39R plastic, about 88 percent of UV light is absorbed. If sunglasses contain polycarbonate lenses, UV absorption will be 100 percent. But remember, even clear lenses can have 100 percent UV protection. However, many cheap sunglasses use a material called triacetate. This material absorbs only about 40 percent of the UV rays. Polarized lenses cut reflected glare sunlight that bounces off smooth surfaces like pavement or water. They can be particularly useful for driving and fishing. Polarization has nothing to do with UV light absorption, but many polarized lenses are now combined with a UV-blocking substance. These lenses are very soothing for eyes that are sensitive to glare, and are highly recommended.

hair colours Choosing
tyour o enhance look
BY “La” Salon, Guerlain Al Fardan Spa
Very often when a woman decides to go for a new look, she chooses to change the colour of her hair. But how do you know which colour best suits you? Just because a hair colour looks great on your friend doesn’t mean it will look good on you. When looking for a new hair colour, don’t go by what your friend uses or pick a colour based on the model on the box. Choose hair colour to match skin tone for the best look.
Hair colours that suit your skin complexion While there are a variety of complexions, all complexions fall into two different skin tone categories: warm or cool. The thumb rule that we usually follow is – for dark skin tones use light hair colours, highlight, honey colour and for light coloured skin use warm colours like blue black, red, and brown. Basically all dark colours are suitable for clients with light skin tones. Although light hair colours might be suitable, they need to be always followed by make up. Warm skin tone: Those with a yellow or golden skin undertone have a ‘warm’ skin tone. Hair
38
colours that have a warm overtone will generally look natural and much better on you. This colour rule also extends to makeup, accessories, and clothing, hence the importance of getting it correct. Cool skin tone: Those with pink or blue skin undertones fall into the cool category. This means that hair colours that have a cool overtone will generally look much more natural on you. How to determine your skin tone The quickest way to work out if you’re warm or cool is to take a look at the veins in your arms while in natural light; If the colour looks green then you are warm or if it’s blue then you are cool. Determine what clothing colour suits you best. This will be directly related to the hair colour you should select.
• If you look good in red, orange, golden yellow, olive green or rust, you suit warm hair tones such as golden blonde, golden brown, strawberry blonde and auburn • If you look good in bluish red, fuchsia, black, royal blue or pine green, you suit cool hair tones such as platinum, ash blonde, ash brown, burgundy and jet black. • If you look good in red, purple, charcoal grey, periwinkle or teal, you suit neutral tones like sandy blonde, beige blonde, chocolate brown and mahogany. Determine what type of jewellery looks best on you. This will determine whether you are cool, neutral or warm. • If you suit silver jewellery you have cool skin
Hair Colour Trends The trend now is copper and one full colour, although some still prefer highlights and lowlights. Some of the other popular colours currently include light burgundy red, intense auburn, dark brunette, warm brown, caramel highlights, platinum natural blondes and fire engine reds.

Knowing if the change is good for you (texture, length, style)
Tips for choosing hair colour based on your skin tone:
• If you have olive skin you suit darker hair colours. You should never go lighter than your skin because the end result is likely to look artificial.
• If you have pink skin, avoid shades of red or golden blonde. Stick to ash tones to neutralize your colouring. • Pale skin suits pretty much any hair colour. • If you are extremely pale then don’t go for black or very dark hair because this will make you look even paler then you already are. • If you have yellow hues to your skin avoid yellow, gold or orange tones. Stick to deep reds and cool dark browns
• If you suit gold jewellery you have warm skin Determine your eye colour. Eye hair colour and hair colour go hand in hand. • A hair colour with warm tones like red, gold and auburn shades are best for people with brown, green or hazel eyes. This is because these particular eye colours also have a yellow base. • Hair colours like light gold or ash are cooler-toned colours and are best suited
to people with blue or grey eyes. These eye colours have a blue base as opposed to having a yellow or brown base. • If you have dark brown or black eyes, you could go in for hair colours like deep coffee brown, blue-back, beige blonde or burgundy reds. •
The first impression when you look into the mirror after you do your hair has the biggest impact; if you feel comfortable with the look or not. Sometimes we don’t like the look because it is a complete change, but when others’ opinions are very positive then we might get use to the look and start liking it. In many cases, you may not like the colour from the first day as it needs to be washed a few times for the colour to blend. In case of using home products for dying the hair, one needs to consult the hair professional, as we have many cases where the client ruins their hair at home and they come to the salon to fix it. We notice that they use a different percentage of oxygen that damages the hair. Our recommendation is always to check with the hair professional about suitable products and the right amount to use. Henna for instance is easy to apply at home, since it is a natural product free from any chemicals that might ruin the hair. If the client wants to change from henna to colouring products, she needs around six months for short hair and one year for long hair to remove the henna completely from the hair before using any other colouring products. The wait time also depends on how many times henna has been used. This underlines the importance of consulting the hair professional for anything to do with hair beauty, health and natural look. “LA” Salon is located at Al Fardan Towers, West Bay Tel: 4499 9250

Ask a Designer 15 Décor Dos For by Lisa Canning
2012
As it’s my job to stay ahead of the trends to provide the latest and greatest information to my clients, here are the latest 15 décor dos - for this year - It’s a year of colour, pattern and inspired living.
1
Do use pattern in your home and use it often. Pattern is the antithesis of stuffy and boring use it to enliven and invigorate your space.
2
Do add a splash of orange. “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.” 46
3
Do mix colour and pattern together. “This creates a unique and individual look. Long gone are the bland ‘hotel’ generic looks of the last decade,” says Lisa Nicholl, CEO of inVU Drapery Co.
4
Do use gold. It’s another metal making a strong comeback in 2012.
5
Do layer
different patterns. “Mix as
many as you like, keeping in mind that varying scale is the key. Patterns like animal skins and geometrics are considered neutral to stripes and florals,” says Lisa.
home
6
Do use wallpaper. If you haven’t used wallpaper already, 2012 is the time to try.
7
Do use
muted colours.
For example, Nimbus grey paint colour- As dense as the cloud for which it’s named, this cool mid-tone blue-grey evokes memories of an early winter walk on a deserted wind-swept beach.
9
décor
8
Do use
a patterned rug. Graphic
floor coverings are so modern and fresh.
Do use brass. It is a metal that is making a big comeback. “Polished, antiqued, hammered - you name it, we’re doing it,” says Meredith Heron, Principal Designer of Meredith Heron Designs.
10
Do collect
vintage.
“Purchase items such as lamps, mirrors, prints and ornamental pieces to look as if they were collected or handed down, rather than purchased at a big box store all at the same time,” says Lisa.
11
Do use
anything
patina. This worn look
on metals gives items a story and history.
47
home
décor
12
Do mix
and match collectibles. “They do not
necessarily all match in colour or style but somehow work harmoniously in a room because they were purchased with love and inspiration rather than desperation,” says Lisa.
Do layer with lighting. “A lamp is no longer just a practical element. A lighting source can easily become a decor statement - combine various fixtures to create different moods, from lively to ambient,” says Sebastien Fauteux, General Merchandising Manager for Urban Barn.
13
14
Do use
geometric shaped tiles in

Fun With Colour,
Fearless With Design by Nitya Shukla Photography Jessie Palanca
ABODE meets Peter Schรถnhofen, co-founder of the iconic Kare Design and gets inspired with his fearless approach to interior design.

“The only thing constant is change,” says Peter Schönhofen, co-owner of Kare Design, and there you have a motto that has defined and set apart a globally successful company that continues to offer innovative and creative lifestyle concepts to the world. And it’s no wonder: Kare Design can always be expected to reject the mundane and design the extraordinary while providing good design at affordable prices. In the last thirty years, they have been in the realm of lifestyle concepts, furniture, furnishing accessories and lighting, all of which have concentrated on the joie de vivre of life. For Kare’s owners, Jürgen Reiter and Peter Schönhofen, it is all about “More taste than money!” a slogan that emanates from each of the pieces. In February 2012, Kare opened its doors as Kare Qatar at the Lagoona Mall, bringing energetic exuberant lifestyle concepts driven by the modern needs of the individual. Walking around in the store, we were blown away by the brilliance of ideas. The store has different corners with different concepts ranging from psychedelic pop art styles, to patchwork, to contemporary chic to classy; so much so, we just had to bring them to you in our interiors section! It was double treat since we got to interview the madman himself, Peter Schönhofen, who is all about being fearlessly creative and minces absolutely no words when he talks. ABODE: What can you tell us about Qatar, experience wise? PS: So far very good. We find on one hand people who are conscious of their lifestyle and who know what to do and seek fun and excitement. They care about how they look, whether it is in the bags or the interiors. If people could wear their interiors to wherever they go… they would! On the other hand, people who don’t care how they live, the latter, are not a part of our target group. ABODE: What is different about Kare Qatar? PS: The existing policy of buy and throw [away] furniture available at a few interior stores in Qatar is not going to be the policy of the future for people who live consciously. People just don’t want to buy and throw [away] furniture,
interiors
which becomes important from the ecological point of view and doing the right thing. Therefore we insist on quality and we don’t sell cheap sofas, which you have to renew every few years. Instead we offer things which you can live with for ten or twelve years.
from fashion trends/fashion rebels, coming from the green corner, where we use a lot of used wood in India. We make furniture with [an] individual look and character for those who love to collect and bring it into their “collective” interiors... for people who love to travel in mind or in reality.
ABODE: What will be the interiors trend in 2012-13?
ABODE: What is the creative process then?
PS: For 2012-13 the trend is that you have a tasteful mix of the existing with matching nudes. The general trend is individualism. Just like you bring back furniture with a story behind it, the interior can too tell the story, as well. It is a kind of kind of patchwork of different journeys and different moments that people went to.
PS: For starters we have a big fashion store in Munich where you get the trends one year in advance in fashion and interiors and of course we adapt a lot. Secondly we take our brand to all the major fairs in Asia and Europe and there we meet people, listen to ideas, discuss and then develop. Sometimes it’s a combination of going ahead but without flying off the ground. We have more than 55 stores in the world. We listen to what the customers are replying to the ideas in stores every day.
ABODE: Can you elaborate on this theme of individualism in interiors? PS: We are facing a world of individualists which means, say even though they are surrounded by media, but they organize their own individual media, read what they like on Twitter, blogs, in magazines, choose their programs. There is no newspaper that can reach them except the one they allow. Therefore this individual selection of communication is bringing so many changes to the people’s mentality that they are no more ready to eat what’s on the table. They say they want to arrange the table on [their] own. Like from the spices to the ingredients to the design of the candle stands and to the table itself, they want to mix and match and they want to do so and they say 'I can do so'. This is the big trend of individualism driven by modern devices, smart phones and internet of course. ABODE: And as a design company, how do you cater to that level of individualism? PS: We let play! We introduce crazy assortments/ furnishings/interior items or crazy ideas like with the patchwork and the caravan items in a range of colours and we do crazy photography and get such people to really reflect and work with new concepts. ABODE: Speaking of which, what inspired the Kare’s patchwork collection? PS: Patchwork is a kind of a philosophy regarding mix and match things coming
ABODE: What are the big trends in furnishing in vogue in Europe? PS: A lot of authentic material, not glass but wood, combination of wood with high class lacquer, using fantasy for interior styles. For trendy people we have a lot of pieces from traditional to modern, sometimes it is a very traditional piece with a modern twist. Our pieces are very convenient for modern living projects. ABODE: How will Qatar view Kare Design, considering that the interior concepts here are different? PS: This country is developing quickly with many designers, architects working here and we have a lot of unique but commercial pieces that can be used in this part of the world. We (Kare) are for the cosmopolitan people. I think Qatar as a society is developing further with external influences, owing to their foreign policies coming in; there is a cosmopolitan platform that is developing here. ABODE: What inspired your creativity? PS: The smile of the people of course! The feedback, the emotion drives me. Whether it is love or hate, as long as there is a feeling or an emotion! If a customer hates a piece, it’s okay, if he loves it I would prefer but the worst reaction would be to get an ‘I don’t care’. •

The Mövenpick Hotel Doha
By Sadhbh Royce photograpy courtesy of Mövenpick
Summer is just around the corner and if you haven’t already, it’s not too late to give your home the spring cleaning it’s longing for. There’s nothing better than shaking off the cobwebs moving things around and giving your surroundings a little lift. That is exactly what The Mövenpick Hotel Doha has done to their guest rooms and these before and after shots will be sure to inspire you to think about changing a few key elements and possibly transforming your own living space.

om Before
Admittedly it was no small feat for the hotel to transform the 154 guest rooms, 22 of which are suites. The process took a very impressive four months to complete and I think you’ll agree that they’ve turned the slightly dated rooms of this business hotel into something quite special. Using the original furniture, making a few modifications to it and doing what is called a ‘soft refurbishment’, the rooms have been brought right up to date in impressive style. As the General Manager, Fabien Chesnais says himself, “This transformation brought fresh energy to the property and has given the rooms and suites a contemporary modern style with an understated elegance.”
ABODE
The hotel itself is nestled in the bustling heart of the city, walking distance from the Corniche, opposite the Museum of Islamic Art, and a mere 5 km from Doha International Airport and also the city’s business district: a perfect location for the savvy business traveller. The designers on this project focused on the key elements to transform these rooms. With a simple change in colours and textures the designers have been able to transform these rooms to dramatic effect. The wall colour was the first thing that really needed updating. They took the
blue colour, which although it is thought to produce a calming effect can often create a cold and rather dated look. A warm neutral tone was chosen with a hint of golden yellow. This creates a wonderful blank canvas with which to work. The warm colours chosen throughout are subtle and inviting yet urban and chic, a winning combination. The grey silk curtains with the silk leafprint border are a real statement in the room. The grey colour gives the room an urban contemporary feel while the luxurious silk fabric gives a touch of

elegance and refinement to the rooms. Much of the lighting still works in the room but the bedside lamps have been replaced by simple glass based lamps sourced from Spain to once again enhance a more urban feel in the room. Another secret element to the success of this room is the subtle use of the colour black. Subtle as it may be black has been used very cleverly in small details to create a flow and continuity in the rooms. Black granite tops have been added to some existing units and the bedside lockers to give the furniture a fresh look. The legs
of the existing furniture have been refinished with a black lacquer. The skirting has a black trim detail, along with the headboard and even the picture frames, creating a seamless element throughout.

Nusantao:
Sea Kitchens at The Four Seasons By Sadhbh Royce Photography Jessie Palanca
A breath of fresh air comes into Doha from the shores of Southeast Asia and The Far East where once intrepid Arab traders ventured to trade in pearls and spices. This has come in the form of Nusantao: Sea Kitchens, the brand new restaurant at The Four Seasons. The concept is a culinary adventure through Southeast Asia and The Far East with theatrical open kitchens and dramatic interiors, and it doesn’t disappoint.
T
he Japanese Chef de Cuisine, Toshikazu Kato, is the master of ceremonies. His multicultural culinary team from Indonesia, Thailand, India, China and Japan are dressed to perfection in crisp white and work busily in unison, creating wondrous food right before your eyes. The decorative artefacts that adorn the shelves and counters are as multicultural as the talented staff and if your attention isn’t completely captured by the live cooking stations, the decorative artefacts that adorn the shelves and counters are just one of many features of the exquisite interior design.

new concepts
The restaurant was designed by London based Henry Chebaane at Blue Sky Hospitality and is really something new for Doha. It’s a fresh concept and something you would not necessarily associate with The Four Seasons brand. It is atmospheric, with both lighting and music playing an important role in the overall scheme. Apart from that, the food is simply glorious. The main elements of the restaurant are theatrical open, live cooking stations. The sushi bar design is clean and simple and the impressive display of delectable fish is the real feature here. The chef expertly carves each piece of sushi right before your eyes. The Indonesian station is beautifully draped with traditional batik fabrics. The pastry kitchen, is to be the highlight, offering numerous delights including ‘Ais Kacang’, a Malay speciality of shaved ice with a selection of sweets which I personally cannot wait to sample. In the evening the restaurant is ambient and pleasingly aesthetic. Upbeat chill-out music plays creating a soft but energized mood. Blue light boxes create shadows giving the illusion of being under the sea. Metal beaded curtains are draped and uplit with blue LEDs to create the impression of fishing nets draped in the sea waiting for the catch of the day. The flooring is a simple oak. Warm walnut wall panels are mixed with panels of woven coconut giving subtle interest and texture to the wall finishes. Clear jars are illuminated and filled with cinnamon, dried chillies, orchids and even noodles to great effect. Sea shell chandeliers and mother of pearl clad drawers add to the ‘underwater’ theme with a subtle elegance. The outdoor terrace is really beautiful and I visited it on a really perfect balmy night. The soft upbeat music continues into this area maintaining the atmosphere of the restaurant as the sliding doors open. The tiles were the first thing to catch my attention. They are sleek and grey like something you would see in an Italian designed kitchen. This creates a smart contemporary feel and the perfect flow from indoors. The central feature in this area is the open fire, a striking addition to this space.
The scheme is predominantly grey with contemporary seating and white tables, surrounded by luscious greenery from the existing pool area with the addition of bamboos around the perimeter adding to the Asian theme. You may even have a sea view depending on your table. The whole area is enclosed overhead by what I would say is an almost Bedouin inspired canopy made of wood. The cover is constructed from angled slatted pieces of wood that join at points much like a tented construction. This beautiful contemporary feature provides shade during the midday sun but it also allows you to see through to the stars overhead at night.
The fabulous culinary delights aside, I think this restaurant is sure to grace Doha’s top restaurant lists very soon for its design alone. It is a real treat to experience a fresh new concept done with perfection in mind. I would highly recommend you take the opportunity to experience a table outdoors some evening soon while the weather is still mild. I’m certain you won’t be disappointed whether it’s a romantic dinner for two or a group celebration. Enjoy! •

A Coming of Age BY Moona MASRI-WHITICE Photography by Lee Manning
Timothy Corrigan, one of ABODE’s favourite Interior Designer, who also has clients in Doha, shares his childhood Los Angeles mansion with us. This beautiful house was built in 1922, and is an exquisite example of Georgian Colonial Revival style in California, USA. It has a Central Hall Plan where all rooms are connected to the hall and if the doors to the Family Room were open, you would be able to see the garden behind. This amazing structure was world renowned American Interior Designer, Timothy Corrigan’s boyhood home from the age of 7 to 11, after which his parents sold it and moved away. When he found out the house was on the market in 2006, Timothy sent the sellers a picture of himself as a boy, sitting in the pool, with a note “please let me come home.” 60

The Rest Is History. Since purchasing the stately mansion, Corrigan, has made architectural and design changes, creating an extraordinarily comfortable home, filled with precious antiques and fine paintings, furniture, and sculptures, most from the late 18th and early 19th centuries – the Neo-Classic period. Many relate directly to France, Napoleon or to the Napoleonic era. Although the house is considered to have a more formal style, Corrigan has achieved a wonderful balance between old world elegance, comfort, and warmth to make it a memorable place to come home to. This house was featured last month in the April edition of Architectural Digest and due to Corrigan’s discerning taste in antiques, the house is brimming with so much history that people insisted on seeing them. As a result, special house tours are being led by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. ABODE is privileged to showcase this magnificent home

A Relationship That Counts By Rubina Singh Photography Jessie Palanca
His Excellency John Groffen, Ambassador of The Netherlands offers a fascinating viewpoint of Qatar, which has been his home for the past three years. Whether it is Qatar the economic powerhouse, the Qatari “can-do attitude, the emphasis on building relationships or the continuous efforts made to preserve Qatari heritage... for him it all comes together as a magical experience. His Excellency John Groffen.

ABODE
H
olland has always been an outward looking nation. The expansive Dutch outlook and entrepreneurial attitude have ensured that it has, and continues to enjoy a leading role in international affairs. The Dutch people’s willingness to accept aspects of foreign culture while maintaining their unique identity is very well personified by His Excellency John Groffen, Ambassador of The Netherlands to Qatar. Having spent almost three years here, his experience in Qatar is one of many interesting encounters and experiences which emerge in the conversation that he has with ABODE. Abode: What has your experience been like as an Ambassador to Qatar? JG: When I first arrived here, I was struck by the dynamics of the country and all that is here. It felt good to be a part of it and it was interesting to see how we could do something between The Netherlands and Qatar. I think Qatar is, of course, an economic powerhouse but is also becoming increasingly important in regional politics. It’s a very stable country and it was all these factors together, which prompted our Queen to pay a visit in March last year. An event like this involved a lot of preparation and was very rewarding, since they went away happy. Since I have been here, the attention for Qatar amongst the Dutch has been growing, increasing every week, every month. Abode: How would you describe Qatar’s relationship with The Netherlands? JG: What I like about Qatari people is that they have a very “can do” mentality, if they want to do something; it’s as good as done and of course it’s helpful that they have a lot of money but it’s this desire to play an important role not only in politics but also in economics... I think that is very attractive to The Netherlands. It prompts more Dutch companies to come here to see if they can partner with Qatari enterprises and work on projects together. Abode: How about your views on the recent event of former international football player Ronald de Boer bringing football expertise to Qatar for 2022 FIFA? JG: The Netherlands is also a football-crazy
country with a big tradition in football, so we took Qatar’s hosting of the World Championship in 2022 as a starting point to look for how to co-operate...this mission in March resulted from that eagerness for a mutually beneficial relationship. We had a big delegation led by our Captain Ronald de Boer, who was the ambassador for bidding nation Qatar and hence is well known. I think the business event was a huge success and we are now actively working on the follow-up. Abode: How can Qatar benefit from the Dutch know-how? JG: In a way, we (Qatar and The Netherlands) both have similar backgrounds. Both are small countries with challenging environments. Qatar doesn’t have enough water, while we have excess of it. On the other hand, Qatar has abundant sunshine, which The Netherlands doesn’t, yet both survive. Both countries are confronted with problems like waste and water management. Qatar is eager to learn about the stateof-the-art systems in diverse fields and is actively looking for partnerships. I think in some areas like waste and water management, traffic circulation, public health, public safety, we have experience which can be interesting for Qatar. Abode: Are there any upcoming projects for the summer this year? JG: We are a small embassy staffed only by three people in the commercial section so organizing a mission like the last one really takes a lot of time and energy. We now have three trade missions at the end of this year: in Gas and Oil, Maritime Equipment and Public Health. That’s the way it looks now, but it could be different. We also have an event in the fall, the Dutch-Qatari Joint Business Council, where Dutch companies have partnered up with Qatari Businessmen Association and they are looking at organizing a two day event. Abode: Share with us some of your fondest memories, your favourite places in Qatar. JG: What I really relish is the antithesis between the new and the old and I like what the Qataris do to preserve their heritage. I am impressed when I’m in West Bay, these beautiful buildings with exquisite illumination and architecture... it’s like having Manhattan on the
people
Arabian Peninsula! But of course these high rise buildings sort of dehumanize the landscape. What I like is the complete opposite, the old Doha, the Souk with its traditional atmosphere where everybody mingles, the hustle and bustle, the vibrant colours, the smell of people smoking Shiesha and dining in the streets of Souq Waqif. Abode: In your personal opinion, what are some of the similarities and differences between the cultures of the two countries? JG: People from both countries are outspoken, open and very frank. So this is a common style of functioning and it makes it easy for us to work together. Another similarity between our people is that we both complain about the weather. I say to the Qataris that I love the sunshine in their country and they tell me they love the rain in mine. As for the differences, we (Dutch) are very business oriented and the Qataris are more into personal relationships and that is something we tell the visiting business men and entrepreneurs, that it is not just about striking a deal.. it’s the relationship that counts. Abode: What is your favourite pastime here in Doha? JG: While I’m not a big player, I enjoy playing golf and it’s nice to go to the Doha Golf Club and walk the nine holes and be surrounded by the green and the soothing breeze...it’s a lovely place to be. I also love to swim in the sea when the water is not too hot or too cold. So I take advantage of these windows of opportunity in spring and fall. The Souq is something we always look forward to visiting too. And we often get friends coming down who look forward to experiencing the same. The falcon hospital is, for me, very special. I love the art exhibitions in Qatar. For example the “Caiguoqiang:Saraab” exhibition of artwork made from gunpowder, which in a way is also performance art. I like how they show on video how they make the artwork with gunpowder, and then make it explode and you get to see the result. Fascinating! That sums up what I admire about Qatar, they have an eye for beauty and if they come across something exquisite, they get it here. Qatar is more than just Qatar, it is a window to the bigger world. •

Captain Hassan Al-Mousawi, CEO Rizon Jet
Come Fly With Me... Lets Fly...Lets Fly Away... by Nitya Shukla & Deliah Furcoi Photography Jessie Palanca
Getting out of town just got simpler, thanks to Qatar’s only independent private jet operator, Rizon Jet!
F
rank Sinatra said it best in his 1958 hit release Come Fly With Me, a song that inspired a jet set generation to travel. The dawn of the jet age lead to the expansion of commercial airlines. Today, we have progressed to the point that corporate and individual travelers desire the flexibility and the exclusivity of private chartered air travel. This need has lead to the formation of independent and private jet operators like Rizon Jet.
76
The advantages of flying with Rizon Jet Qatar are many: the freedom to fly at a time that suits you; to destinations of your choice as opposed to pre-set destinations; being airborne in as little as six hours in case of emergencies, or flying from a lavish, exquisite VIP terminal that offers convenience and utmost privacy. Sounds too good to be true and yet Rizon Jet, Qatar’s first independent air operator, is poised to meet the rapidly rising travel needs of their clientele ranging from
business and VIP travellers to families on the go. Having heard about the recent opening of the Rizon Jet’s VIP terminal, we were lucky enough to have a chat with the gracious CEO, Captain Hassan Al-Mousawi, head of the newly refreshed management team who is leading Rizon Jet into the next phase of its strategic development. We learned that, in addition to the new VIP Terminal, Rizon Jet provides an impressive

menu of services including Executive Aircraft Charter, Aircraft Maintenance Services, Aircraft Management and Aircraft Sales and Acquisition. Captain Al-Mousawi explained, “We treat each client individually and all our services fit the specific needs of each customer.” When it comes to basic flight service, for example, he explained that airlines’ preset destinations, routes and schedules expand over time depending on the availability of the market. “At Rizon Jet, we don't have a fixed schedule of destinations we follow, we fly the customer wherever he wants to go to. The airlines may be limited to the airports they can go to. We are not!” Captain Al-Mousawi said they can work with as little as six hours’ notice — the minimum time needed to look at the availability of the airplane, landing clearance, services at the destination and availability of overflying clearances (from the countries you will pass over). He emphasized that they offer complete privacy as well as flexibility. “You go
The company also sets itself apart by being the only Middle East operator to have a luxurious VIP FBO based in the international aviation hub of London, Biggin Hill. In fact, Rizon Jet is preparing of an anticipated increase in business in the run-up to this summer’s Olympic Games in London. Captain Al-Mousawi said, “We don’t see advance bookings usually, but we are seeing enquiries for bookings from people who want to attend it. We are looking at ways to accommodate the number of people, bookings that are going to come up. One of the options is drop and go services.” Another aspect of the company is providing engineering and maintenance services for business jets and private aircraft in the Gulf region. Al-Mousawi explained that, “Owning an aircraft is not just a matter of buying an airplane. You need pilots, engineers, maintenance service, secure overflying permissions, licences, staff for arrival and departure arrangements, handling baggage and supplies and ground transportation! We provide all these services. If an owner would like to have a private jet, we provide a total turnkey project.” Rizon Jet can also be a source of expert advice in the pre-investment
people
stage, helping clients through a needs analysis that reviews travel patterns and requirements to see whether someone really needs to buy a plane or might be better served through other options, such as the purchase of block hours. Currently, Rizon Jet has extended the range of aircraft services offered, and has secured approvals for the management and maintenance of a number of new aircraft models. Rizon Jet’s MROs in Doha and Biggin Hill hold Qatar CAA and EASA base maintenance approvals, in addition to approvals for Aruba, Bermuda, and Cayman Islands for aircraft types including the Bombardier Global series, Challenger Series, Hawker 125 XP series, and the Beech 390 Premier 1/1A and Cessna 560 Citation series. The company plans to secure approvals for the Airbus A319CJ aircraft in 2013. And what else might the future hold? Captain Al-Mousawi said, “We want to ensure our services are known in Qatar, and ensure people understand that this is an affordable service. We are looking at a Far East presence in the future and we are in touch with French authorities for a similar set-up at Paris Le Bourget. We provide aircraft management, charter services, private lounges and maintenance facilities under one umbrella. All of this is interlinked. We know what pitfalls we have to work with in order to set up newer facilities, so it is easier to replicate elsewhere. Hopefully, you will find Rizon Jet wherever you go.” •

He then moved on to The Grand Regency (recently updated to the Wyndham Grand Regency Doha) and has been here ever since. “I was lucky to have been placed in a high position so early in my career,” he says. But after meeting with him, it seems it was less luck and more his personal determination and natural charisma that led to his success.
Lotfy has witnessed a complete evolution from Doha twenty years ago to Doha 2012. “Back then, at 9 pm, Doha was a dead country. There was no movement, no activity, zero entertainment,” he explains. It takes courage and strength of character to stay motivated purely by a vision, but Lotfy has always believed Doha to be a very special place and kept his mind’s eye on the vision of what Qatar is today, which he describes as “a healthy environment, a golden oasis which has one thing the world is missing: safety.”
With Qatar being a fast developing country, industries need to keep up with the pace of its development in order to stay on top and meet the national vision of 2030. “The hotel is newly renovated and we are always upgrading and looking to serve our clients in the best possible way”. The hotel has recently become part of the Wyndham chain, which Lotfy says has helped it to become globally recognized with Wyndham having hotels positioned all over the map. Lotfy has a humble nature and believes education, reading and taking the time to talk to people are good self-investments. Being a ‘people’s-person’ — evident by his relaxed nature in the company of strangers and his constant gestures of acknowledgment to the people flowing through the hotel lobby — Lotfy believes that “PR is everything.” He explains that the most important lessons he has learned on his journey, he owes to the people he has met along the way. He speaks very fondly of travel and insists that one should take every possible opportunity to explore the world. “I’m always looking for new places,” he says eagerly. When asking Lotfy what he believes to be the ingredients of success, he replies quite matter-of-factly, “Hard work. Give your work more time. And never forget your family.” •

Empowering Women In The Workplace By Elsbeth Blekkenhorst, Co-Founder and Director of Global Women Qatar
As women’s contributions to the economy are increasingly recognized, there are a growing number of opportunities for females in the work world. What’s more, the Qatari government is helping ease the way.
A
cross the world, more women are working than ever before. The global economic empowerment of women is one of the most remarkable revolutions of the past 50 years. The increase of women in the labour force gained momentum in the late 19th century. In Qatar, there has also been a big increase in women joining the labour force. For example, the expansion of higher education in the country has also boosted job prospects for women, improving their value in the job market and shifting their role models from stay-at-home mothers to successful professional women. The Qatar Statistics Authority has conducted a survey on the labour force in the State of Qatar. One of the main points of this 2011 survey was the increase of
female percentage in labour force during the last years of the survey: climbing from 10.7 per cent of the total labour force in 2008 to 12.4 per cent in 2011. Regarding the expansion of higher education in the State, the survey shows that 61 per cent of female Qataris employed by the government obtained a degree higher than secondary school. It’s interesting to note that women tend to work longer hours than men; while females put in an average of 53 hours weekly, men log slightly less, at 51 hours. Qatari women will likely play a key role in the country’s economic future, according to a study conducted by Rand. They are entering the labour force in increasing numbers, and once employed they tend to persist in their professional
lifestyle
commitments even through child-bearing years. Furthermore, while in some parts of the world the absence of legal rights and protections restrict women’s economic participation, Qatar has made important political, educational and social changes that expand opportunities for women. The trend toward more women working is almost certain to continue. In the European Union women have filled six million of the eight million new jobs created
since 2000. Life in the workplace has become much more diversified as an increased number of women have made their presence felt in many industries and professions. More and more companies are now diversifying their workforce and taking more women on board. This diversity in the workplace is key to the competitive advantage of firms. And faster change is likely as women exploit their economic power. Many
There are a number of reasons why women are becoming so successful in the workplace: 1. They are more intuitive - bringing in all points of view. This allows for more collaboration and win-win situations where many stakeholders can benefit. In today’s complex working environment, this way of doing business is essential. 2. They have different values than men do. Women tend to be much more empathetic to the diverse workforce needs. If an employee is conflicted between work and other aspects of her life, a woman in a senior position would more likely notice the needs of her employee. 3. Women are stronger with networking, sponsoring and supporting each other.

talented women are already hopping off the corporate treadmill to form companies that meet their needs better. One main issue, of course, is work/life balance. For some women this can be a big struggle in terms of making a good career for herself, but also reserving time and energy to properly take care of her family. Qatar’s National Development Strategy 2011-2016 supports women in the workplace and for them to stay in the workplace. The extent to which women are able to participate and remain in the labour market is intrinsically linked to the support available to help women balance family and professional responsibilities. The Qatari government will improve support for working families, particularly for women, by expanding child care facilities and family-friendly employment practices and by encouraging gendersensitive working environments. One of the targets is to put in place measures that support working women, including revising the current human resources law and maternity leave policy. This will certainly help to further increase the number of women in the workforce. •

An associate of Ahmed Hassan Bilal Group Opens Two New Branches in Al Khor and Al Mamoura With its commitment to excellence in service and quality, Chowking will open its doors to customers at two new locations in Qatar mid-May: the brand new Al Khor Mall in Al Khor, 50 km north of Doha near Al Sultan Beach Resort and in Dar al Salam Mall in Al Mamoura near Haloul and Mesaimeer Streets. We can’t wait to get our taste buds around every item on the menu as this successful brand from the Philippines continues to make its mark in Qatar.
A
n associate of Ahmed Hassan Bilal Group, Chowking offers something for everyone. Its extensive menu, fast, free home delivery service and reasonable prices make it one of the most popular franchises in Doha for fresh, hot Chinese cuisine. With current locations on Al Saad St. and Salwa Road, the popularity of the brand continues to expand as customers looking for a comforting dining experience flock to menu choices that are well-known and well-loved.
For Chowking Business Development Manager Dave Ramos, the expansion of the brand to Al Khor and Al Mamoura is a sign of positive things to come. “The new stores have been in the works for the past three years,” he says. “There’s a very large market in Al Mamoura and Al Khor and we anticipate there to be even more growth in the next couple of years.”
“Chowking offers something for everyone”
Established in the Philippines in 1985, Chowking comes from the Chinese meaning ‘above the rest’ and it’s a motto the brand holds dear as each franchise outlet continues to provide diners with a taste of excellence. Some of the most popular menu items that continue to sell out are the iconic ‘halo halo’ dessert – a mixture of shaved ice and condensed milk mixed with a variety of fruits including coconut, mango and jackfruit, topped with ice cream and decadent leche flan. Other bestsellers include the ‘asado siopao’ a fluffy, light pastry bun filled with steaming beef or chicken – it’s quick, comforting dim sum at its best.
Chowking is also making waves across the rest of Doha as its customer base continues to diversify as a result of its family-friendly atmosphere and efficient service. Ramos hopes that in the next several years the brand will continue to move ahead with more franchises popping up across the country. Patrons to the two new locations can look forward to five or six new specials on the menu as the restaurant celebrates its move into these two brand-new malls. Chowking also offers full-service catering for parties and corporate events and can accommodate up to 70 people for events at both its Al Saad St. and Salwa Road franchises – the perfect spot to enjoy good food and great times with family and friends. •

Temper Your
Chocolate by Nitya Shukla Photography Jessie Palanca
ABODE gets a live lesson in tempering chocolate from Executive Pastry Chef Saiful Huda at the newly opened Criolla, the chocolate emporium by InterContinental Doha The City. Why, you ask? Well, as is it happens, chocolate isn’t naturally smooth, shiny or creamy and has to be tempered so it comes out with characteristics like a glossy patina, a clean snap when broken, firmness, smoothness, richness, and a longer shelf life. Untempered chocolate can be unsightly and crumbly!

1
Find The Marble! Tempering
chocolate is bringing it back to a solid state from a melted state. This is often done on a marble slab and requires folding the chocolate until it reaches the right temperature, about eighty two degrees celcius. Working the chocolate on the marble slab helps to form the cocoa butter crystals required to give its beautiful finished qualities.
How to Fold. Once you have
melted the chocolate and the mixture is completely liquefied, pour half onto the marble slab and with the spatula, fold repeatedly until the chocolate has thickened to a velvety consistency. Slowly work in the rest of the mixture until the whole mass is of uniform texture.

Test It! Dip a spoon or butter
knife into the chocolate and leave it out to dry for a good five to eight minutes. If the chocolate has set so that it no longer looks wet and the surface is uniform and without streaks, the chocolate is tempered.

Vapiano
By Alex Corey Photography Jessie Palanca
Nestled on a quiet street across from the chaotic City Center mall, you will find Vapiano, one of Doha’s best casual dining establishments because it makes you feel at home.
I
say that, because like at a good friend’s home, you are free to serve yourself. That’s right, though there are a few waiters around to facilitate, the service is ultimately up to the customer. Perhaps you are in a hurry and you need a quick bite to eat. Fret not, grab your card (used to keep track of what you order), make your selection and watch as your meal is prepared right in front of you, while you dictate exactly how you want it. Maybe you are feeling a little more relaxed today and looking for a chat with a good friend. Why not enjoy a cup of coffee, or one of the tantalizing teas? If you’re feeling peckish you might agree to share the bruschetta pizza, and a sweet panna cotta for dessert. Go if you’re just looking for somewhere to unwind, because it is just a great place to just be! Though the food is very fresh, is prepared right in front of your eyes and is about as close to home cooked as a restaurant can get (pasta is homemade from scratch, everyday), it is not just about the food. Vapiano is a total concept, an experience.

It is a very open well-lit space—such that I did not even notice the lighting, at all, until someone in my party mentioned it. How fantastic that it wasn’t even a factor. How often do we find ourselves in some pretentious low or harshly lit environment? It was wonderful to experience the natural lighting, aided by windows that surround the dining area and span floor to ceiling, nurturing an “outdoor” feel. Naturally, there is a patio available as well, sporting large sun umbrellas to protect us from the scorching sun that will soon be arriving. To me, though, this is a place where I don’t mind being inside. I had a Zen- like moment when I first walked in. The first thing that caught my interest was the 1.5 metre tall olive tree growing out of the centre of one of the tables. It is a real, living and photosynthesizing olive tree and the first bit of green that I notice, but not the last. Each of the tables is equipped with
fresh herbs growing in a pot, right at your fingertips. You want to add a bit of relish to your pasta, what better way then to pick herbs fresh off the plant? A column is used to centre a display of green, welcoming you to grab a pot and garnish at your will. Though the overall amount of green is minimal, it is sufficient to create a sense of nature, and again, the sentiment of being in a back yard patio or garden. The tables themselves also facilitate this feel. Keeping with the efficient and functional, yet welcoming and laid-back theme, each table has a coat hook. If your blackberry or iPhone is running low, there are power outlets, cleverly concealed underneath the tables, which are solid and reminiscent of a kitchen island, again providing a “homey” feel that takes over soon after you settle into the comfortable chairs. The warmth of the environment is exuded through a colour scheme that actually reminds me of a pizza. When you first enter, there is a tomato-sauce

red adorning the walls, tables and café style seats. The wall is covered with photographs that remind me of snapshots you would see on a fridge or wall, celebrating the people in one’s life. The tomato sauce red seems to spill over onto the doughy beige of the dining tables and chairs, all of which are accented with a pinch of green here and there. A large blackboard frames the kitchen, which is completely open and lacks anything resembling a microwave – everything is made fresh, remember? The blackboard was created by a local artists and displays quotes and artwork of food, Italian culture and even Qatari landmarks. It is sporadic with bursts of colour and adds a relaxed and familiar feel to the experience. The biggest recommendation, however, comes from a quick scan of the customers. A diverse mix of young and old, small and big and from numerous countries, it’s quickly apparent they all have one thing in common: they are all smiling and quite evidently enjoying themselves. A friend of mine just happens to walk in as I am about to leave. “What are you doing here?” I ask. “Oh, this is my favorite casual dining place to eat in Doha and I’m meeting some friends here.” That pretty much says it all. •

A Slice of Spicy Peru M
By Nitya Shukla Photography Jessie Palanca
ake way, the Peruvian cuisine is leading the global culinary parade! It’s time to say hello to flacota, yellow chili paste, quinua, chili, Ceviche, aji, papa seca and the eternal pisco sour. And what better way to introduce this fantastic cuisine than the Peruvian Festival, a culinary adventure hosted in April at The Diplomatic Club in association with the Embassy of The Republic of Peru in Qatar and Air France-KLM, who organized the event. It was officially launched by Peruvian Ambassador HE Julio Florian. What’s more, two special guests arrived from Peru to ensure Qatar got a taste of the authentic 500-year old cuisine. Chef Javier Ampuero and Chef David Fernandez, known in Peru and globally were present to cook up amazing delicacies that wowed the audience.
Chef Javier has authored “Our Peruvian cuisine to the world” and hosted various cooking shows besides starting his own restaurant “Ampuero”, while Chef David is known as a well-travelled culinary expert with vast global experience. When ABODE asked what made them decide to jump on a plane, Chef David joked, “We wanted to show Qatar a little bit of the typical Peruvian food. We want them to know that Peruvian food can be an option for dinner too. We want them to want to fly 8,977 miles to learn more about our culture!” For both, the chance to cook Peruvian food so far away from home and to showcase their cuisine, was an exciting quest.
Chef David Fernandez
Chef Javier Ampuero
When asked to describe the Peruvian essence, Chef Javier said that due to its rich heritage, the cuisine is delicious, spicy, hot, mystic and even funny! While he named chili as one of the main ingredients of Peruvian cooking, chef Javier named flacota as his favourite. However, both agreed that a fusion of many ingredients caused the actual development and boom in the Peruvian gastronomy scene, a cuisine that melds native Andean cultures and Spanish, Japanese, Chinese influences, as well as Arab contribution arising from throughout 800 years Arab presence in Al-Andalus (present day Spain and Portugal). So would they worry that original flavours would be lost in the contemporary scenario? Chef

David doesn’t think so. “Peruvian food is growing and getting bigger, but we still have the traditional places. People will never change since a traditional Ceviche or the traditional pisco sour will always light up any menu!” For the festival, they concentrated on bringing delicacies made from fresh ingredients available in Qatar, married with a few of their well-known spices they brought with them: aji, quinua papa seca, yellow chili paste and dry potatoes! Having just begun their Arab sojourn, the chefs decided to give ABODE readers a flavour of what some might have missed with some Peruvian recipes that you can try out for yourself. •

Super Quick And Healthy
Breakfasts
By Jacqueline Bodnar
Did you know that breakfast is considered one of the most important meals of the day? Yet most research indicates that less than half of the children actually eat a breakfast before heading off to school. There is no better time to make eating breakfast a priority for your family.
M
any benefits can result from this simple daily mission. Research shows that children who eat breakfast each day tend to improve in math, reading and standardized test scores, are better able to pay attention and solve problems, and have fewer absences from school. In addition, the ADA reports that children who eat breakfast get more of the nutrients their bodies need and are less likely to be overweight. So, armed with the knowledge that your child will have better concentration, productivity, attention, and behavior if they eat breakfast, it’s time to rid yourself of all the excuses. If time is the problem, prepare things the night before by cutting up fresh fruit, or keep quick and simple options on hand. If your child isn’t hungry when they first wake up, there is a good chance they are eating too much right before going to bed. And if they are bored by the same old breakfasts all the time, switch up the menu every week! The goal is to get your whole family into the habit of starting their day by eating a healthy breakfast that sets the stage for the hours to follow. Here is a list of simple, quick and healthy breakfast options: • Whole-grain frozen waffles topped with all-fruit spread or natural peanut butter. • Whole-grain muffins and cereals.

Making Better Breakfast Choices When Eating Out By Jennifer R. Scott Source: http://weightloss.about.com/od/eatsmart/qt/betterbreakfast. If you go to a restaurant for breakfast, ask if you can order items from the menu a
la carte, such as eggs without the usual side of beef bacon. Don’t be afraid to ask for substitutions, such as egg whites for whole eggs, or even request items that aren’t on the menu. Healthier choices like yogurt, fruit, a whole wheat bagel, or cottage cheese may be available on request. Just say no to side orders at restaurants. Home fries, hash browns, breakfast meats, and butter-laden potatoes are diet downfalls. They’re all high in fat, sodium, and calories. (Almost half of the fat found in breakfast potato dishes comes from the fat used to cook them.) If you’re used to putting butter or margarine on your toast along with jam, preserves, or jelly, try skipping the fat-laden spread and just add the fruity stuff. You may find your toast is just as tasty without the added fat. Omelettes can be a good choice if you use egg whites. If you prefer, use one whole egg and two egg whites; you’ll still consume fewer calories, less fat and less cholesterol than using whole eggs alone. Reduced-fat cheese is much better these day (my pick is Kraft 2% reduced-fat shredded cheddar.) Pass On Breakfast Breads and Pastries. Also be careful about non-fat varieties when you do splurge -- they often contain more sugar than their regular counterparts, as well as fat replacements that significantly increase their calorie count. • Fruit and yogurt smoothies. • Fresh fruit and instant oatmeal. • A parfait of berries, granola and yogurt. • Whole-wheat toast topped with natural peanut butter. • Whole-grain bagels topped with natural peanut butter or low fat cream cheese. • Make a batch of whole-grain pancakes to freeze. When you need one, thaw it in the microwave and top it with a small amount of pure maple syrup or all-fruit jam. • For an on-the-go breakfast, pair trail mix or a cereal bar with some 100 percent fruit juice. • Whole-wheat tortilla topped with natural peanut butter and sliced bananas, or low-fat cream cheese and all-fruit spread. • Make a breakfast burrito by taking a whole-wheat tortilla and filling it with scrambled tofu or eggs and veggies, with some low-fat cheese. • Make a breakfast pizza, using a whole-wheat English muffin; top it with sauce, low-fat cheese, and some veggies, then bake it for 10 minutes. •
If you normally have a bowl of cold cereal, give hot cereal a try. Oatmeal is a great choice. It is rich in fiber, which will keep you feeling full, and does your health good by helping reduce cholesterol. Oats contain water-soluble fiber, and its carbohydrates release slowly into the bloodstream, helping to keep cravings from coming on fast. If you’re a whole milk drinker, try stepping down to 2% and then 1% after a few weeks. If non-fat milk is too weak for you, consider going back to 1%. It is worth saving the fat and calories.

Fats And Oils:
A Dietary Dilemma?
By Gloria Duran-Renderos, BSc. MPH, Nutrition Consultant
Around the world there is a growing concern about foods and health. The prevalence of overweight and obesity has doubled since 1980, bringing as a consequence a rise in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, osteoarthritis, cerebral vascular accidents, and cancer.
T
hese diseases are a major public health problem, not only for the industrialized nations, but also for those countries adopting the flaws of the western diet. Unfortunately the western diet has a high percentage of animal and vegetable fat, fried foods, a poor consumption of vegetables and fiber and it is surrounded by a prestige aura which has reached families around the world, changing their native eating lifestyle. Low Fat, Low Calories, Sugar Free, or an endless list of Dietary Supplements is what consumers are buying or searching
98
for to solve the problem of bedridden diseases or improve the quality of their lives. Overweight has become a problem not only for adults but also for children. Whether we like it or not, there are no miracle formulas to maintain healthy weight. We must acquire updated knowledge, and must be motivated to practice such education and put it into action in the daily routine of eating and preparing meals. Good nutrition is not only about food and eating. It is also about the proper functioning of the human body to digest and absorb the nutrients essential for
life. It revolves around vitamins and minerals and also embraces three major macronutrients which provide sustenance and energy to move, work, think and create. These macronutrients are proteins, carbohydrates and fats. To eat a Fat Free Diet or a Low Fat Diet to lose or maintain weight is not an easy and simple undertaking: fats play a key role in human nutrition! They add flavour and help us feel full, they are carriers and transporters of liposoluble vitamins such as A, D, K and E. They are also precursors of hormones, phospholipids and other compounds important in brain and central
lifestyle
nervous systems and they are essential in proper liver function. So, before reducing the fats in the daily diet, we must be intelligent consumers and know what we are doing, for the sake of ourselves and our families. FACTS ABOUT FATS • Fats and oils are the most concentrated source of energy. After absorption, one gram of fat releases 9 Kilocalories of energy. This means that when we add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to our salad we are adding 270 calories of energy. High consumption of fatty foods will produce energy that will accumulate as adipose tissue unless we spend it in exercise. • There are no low calorie fats or oils. All fats and oils will have same amount of calories. Foods advertised with less fat and same taste, is because they have added water to the food formula and artificial flavourings. • Fats are visible and invisible. Visible fats because we can see them such as oils, butter, lard, pork fat; Invisible, as it is hidden in the foods, like in nuts, seeds, leafy greens, wheat, rice, and “marbling” in very tender animal products. • Fats are triglycerides. The food we eat enters the body as molecules of triglycerides. In order to be absorbed these triglycerides are broken down to small units called fatty acids. Fatty Acids (EFAS) are called essential because we cannot make them and they must be taken from food. Essential Fatty Acids are Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) and Alpha Linolenic Acid (Omega 3). In the body, the Alpha Linolenic Acid is the precursor of two additional essential fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA but some people cannot really make this conversion as efficiently as necessary. In those cases EPA and DHA must be taken from food.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR FAT INTAKE FROM PROCESSED FOODS? Check the Nutrition Facts table:
Essential Fatty Acids support and nourish the brain and nervous systems, the heart and circulatory systems, and the immune system. They are necessary for healthy skin, hair and nails. They play an important role in energy production, circulation and metabolism.
health
1} Look for the number of calories from fat. 2} Divide the fat calories by the total calories per serving 3} Multiply by 100 4} It will give the % of fat in that particular food. depending on their chemical structure and how they are at different temperatures. Saturated Fats remain solids at any temperature, contain no double bond in their chemical structure. A high consumption of this type of fat will elevate blood lipids. Examples are butter, lard, tallow, palm oil and coconut oil. However, beef tallow and chicken fat are mixtures of saturated and monounsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fats have become very important in the last two decades. They contain a single double bond. They seem to be beneficial in reducing the LDL Cholesterol (Bad Cholesterol) and they seem to lower the risk of breast cancer. Examples of this fat are olive oil

They are liquid at all temperatures and generally they are extracted from plants such as soy, safflower, sunflower, corn, cotton and peanut. • Burned fat is a powerful contaminant. One pound of burned oil or other type of fat, when disposed of in a toilet bowl or a kitchen sink contaminates about 1000 liters of potable water. Therefore, burned fat should be put in a disposable container, covered and thrown away in the regular garbage. WHAT IS A HEALTHY MIX OF FATS TO EAT EVERYDAY? The American Heart Association and the National Academy of Sciences from the United States recommend that 25-30 per cent of daily calories should be eaten as fat, visible and invisible. In a 2000 Calorie Diet plan, the 30 per cent would be approximately 65 g of fat a day. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends: • 15 to 25% monounsaturated • 10% polyunsaturated • 7% should be saturated • Less than 2% of trans-fats Interpreting these recommendations in quantities, it’s one tablespoon of monounsaturated fat, two teaspoons of polyunsaturated, and one teaspoon of saturated fats. An approximate total of 2830 grams (1 ounce) of oils a day. I would recommend avoiding trans-fats. To complete the additional 37 grams of fat needed, I recommend increasing the consumption of foods such as salmon, tuna, sardines, leafy green vegetables, avocados, almonds, walnuts and flaxseed. A healthy diet requires a balance of all of the essential fatty acids. Keep in mind that whole natural foods are always better sources than manipulated processed foods.

COOKING WITH FATS AND OILS The subject of healthy cooking oils and fats is still controversial among researchers. The best fats and oils to cook with are those with a high smoke point, resistant to oxidation and burning. According to a 20 year review of dietary fats done in the United Kingdom, United States of America and Spain in 2001, researchers concluded that cooking with polyunsaturated oils was not safe due to fast oxidation after heating. There is a release of free radicals which are extremely unhealthy and toxic. My recommendations are NOT to prepare fried foods at home BUT if you do, here are some suggestions: • Do not use monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil, or sesame oil. They are extremely sensitive to heat and upon high or medium cooking temperatures they lose their health benefits. • Learn to sauté without oil. Utilize the natural oils in onions, peppers and garlic. Place these in the skillet and add a bit of water. The low temperature will bring out the oils and when they look tender, add the rest of the recipe. Finish cooking your intended dish and at the end, stir in one tablespoon of olive oil or sesame oil. The flavour is amazing!
• Do not use polyunsaturated oils such as corn, safflower and sunflower. High temperatures will break them down and become toxic. • “If you deep fry” often, peanut oil, cotton seed oil, and palm oil are good choices. In summary, fats, well chosen, can be excellent for health and satiety- If your physician advises you to eat less fat; do not sacrifice your healthy fats: Omega 3, Omega 6, Linoleic and linolenic fatty acids. The advice is meant for you to cut down on commercialized processed foods, bakery goods, fried foods, and to use leaner cuts of animal protein. Make sure to calculate the percentage of fat existing in the processed foods you buy. •

Did you know that we’re endowed with the ability to distinguish between more than ten thousand scents? As much we want to forget the bad smells, the pleasant ones can be stored in our memory for a long time, permeating even our subconscious. Floral essential oils: not only moisturize but also soothe our irritation We are not always aware of the impact of odors on our mood. A “bad smell” may cause fatigue, or fear, for example. At the same time, a good smell can soothe you, ease tension and enhance relaxation. In addition to skin nourishment and moisturizing, they can also regenerate and oxygenate the skin. This is significant, since under the influence of fatigue and stress, our features will sharpen and the skin itself appears dry and pale. And then aromatic cosmetics become an essential ally for our beauty. Effect not only in aromatherapy lavender Bubble bath, soap, body lotion and massage oil are the most common forms of scented cosmetics. Cosmetics usually contain a series of relaxing extracts, such as lavender, bitter orange and vetiver. Often in use is a mandarin extract, a scent that soothes and tones, relieves tension, stress and depression. In the cool evenings, a relaxing effect of cinnamon with its warming aroma is very desirable. Rose petal essential oil has a therapeutic effect that can rejuvenate your skin, release tension and lift your mood, while the scent of cherries will help calm your senses. •

Bounce Into Spring By Allan Lloyd Martinez R.N.
Getting started with a fresh outlook on exercising After hibernating the past few months it is now time to shed the winter padding and begin to tone our muscles in preparation for the summer. The best way to get started is to invest in a little preparation.
step
1
Safety first!
Before you decide to begin an exercise regime first assess the current state of your fitness. Do you have hypertension, cardiovascular limitations, a metabolic problem, bone or muscle problem, or past injuries? It is essential to consult a medical professional to be aware of your exercise limitations to avoid overstressing yourself as you begin or aggravating any previous injuries you might have. It is also a must to fully inform your personal trainer so he or she will be aware of any limitations and then the trainer will be able to guide you with exercises that best suit your condition.
step
2
Evaluate your energy expenditure
If the nature of your work requires you to be seated from 4-6 hours per day in the office, this life style obviously does not do much for you in terms of burning calories, especially as you eat during the day. This lack of exercise leads to the body storing the unburned calories as fat. To avoid this, you should do a cardiovascular workout or resistance training at least 20-30 minutes per day.
104
step
3
Get the right gear
Getting the right pair of shoes for your feet is one of the best ways to pamper and protect one of the most abused parts of your body. You don’t want to be stopping in the middle of your workout because of ill-fitting shoes. So get a pair of shoes that has at least a one inch allowance from your toes. Getting the right gym attire plays a factor also in doing the full range of motion in your exercise regime. Lastly, get a well-fitting lifting glove to protect your palms from blisters and calluses.
step
4
One step at a time
In your journey towards achieving your fitness goals, you must have patience and determination. If you have been out of shape for a long time, realize that it will take you awhile to get back into shape again. The key to this is to progress slowly and not do too much too soon. For example, if you are overweight, don’t run on a treadmill because it will put too much pressure on your knees and ankles. Use an Elliptical trainer or bike instead.
lifestyle
step
5
health
Prioritize and commit to your workout
When you make the right choice to have an active and healthy lifestyle, it is important that you schedule at least one hour per day, 3-5 times per week in order to see results. So no more excuses!
step
6
Resistance training or cardiovascular training in the morning
There is nothing more energizing than doing exercise early in the morning after a good deep sleep and before eating our breakfast. This way our bodies burn more stored fats, rather than getting energy from the breakfast we’ve just eaten. After we eat our breakfast, our blood sugar and insulin levels rise and fat-burning stops. After accomplishing your workout, you’ll feel more energized and stronger from the endorphin hormones that you’ve produced.
step
7
Prepare at least one healthy meal for work
In the fast paced world we tend to depend on fast foods that are high in saturated fat, salt, and sugar. Sadly, these foods are low in nutritional value. Commit to preparing at least one healthy meal, let’s say one small box of salad without the heavy dressing, or a low-fat, nutritious sandwich. You’ll be insured of at least one healthy meal outside your home. You’ll see how this strategy also keeps you away from being tempted to buy junk food.
step
8
Increase your water intake
At this time of the year, we tend to sweat a lot, which predisposes us to dehydration and could cause an electrolyte imbalance. So make a conscious effort to drink as much water as you can. Water has many healthy benefits: it helps curb our appetite and decreases our cravings. It helps in the transportation of vitamins, minerals throughout the body and it helps to flush away the toxins and waste products from our body •

Tall Standing Brought to you by birkenstock
P
osture is the position in which you hold your body against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weightbearing activities. In our fast-paced world, where fashion and style go hand in hand with high heels and often too- tight shoes, people tend to ignore the stress and pressure this creates on their feet. High heeled shoes look nice, but they are not friendly to your health or your feet. They inhibit the natural movement when walking, restrict the muscles of the feet and legs, push the toes together and place uneven pressure on the foot. The possible consequences are pain, malformation of the feet and weakening of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Birkenstock footwear is constructed with the shape of a healthy foot in mind because we strongly believe that no other part of the body is subject to so much strain during the course of a lifetime as our feet. They maintain the body’s balance, absorb impacts and bear the entire weight of the body. Having a healthy foot in addition to maintaining a natural correct posture is of utmost importance. Crafted in Germany, the Birkenstock footbed is made of resilient cork/latex and is shaped to follow the contours of a healthy foot, creating a comfortable
106
walking environment for your feet. Additionally, the cork/latex blend is pliable and reacts to natural body warmth. Therefore, over time, the footbed yields to the characteristics of an individual foot. Many long-term Birkenstock wearers find that the longer you wear them, the more comfortable they become. These shoes also distribute the weight of the body evenly across the foot and give feet the freedom of movement they naturally need. Women in particular find Birkenstocks to be their “go to” shoe for weekends and once they arrive home from work, as they help counteract the effects of high heels. The health benefits, however, can be enjoyed by the whole family, with styles available for women, men and kids.
Crafted for comfort First and foremost to note when buying your preferred Birkenstock style is there are a few millimetres of space in the heel and in front of the toes. Rather than being scrunched into the top of your shoe, your toes have room to move in this spacious toe box. In fact, they need this space when walking, in order to move freely with each step. The footbed is offered in two different widths: a normal width for more average feet and a narrow width for especially slender feet. The shoes are also crafted with a deep heel cup to ensure proper weight distribution and foot alignment. It would make sense to think that a softer and more “cushiony” shoe would be more

comfortable. But in fact, the Birkenstock concept of comfort is based on firm orthopedically correct support. Just as you choose a quality mattress to properly support your spine, your feet also require solid support and correct positioning for maximum comfort and health. The architecture of a Birkenstock: a footbed that features proper arch support, deep heel cup, and adequate room in the toe area – all help distribute weight evenly for the entire foot. The result is improved posture and balance for greater comfort when walking. Put a spring in your step Give your feet a treat this season with a classic style enjoyed by people around the world. Walking in the Birkenstock ‘Fitness’ sandals is surprisingly different, since you can instantly feel the increased activity in your muscles. When walking, the continuous switch between tensing your muscles and relaxing will exercise your feet and legs and promote circulation. Moreover, the tissue is tightened and the soles of the feet are strengthened in their role as “shock absorbers”. All these aspects work together to ensure a natural, correct positioning of the foot, improved posture in the entire body and greater overall well-being. Get your kids off on the right foot! Sure, you want your kids to have healthy food. But what about healthy shoes? Children’s feet are still growing and their bones are still forming. The contours of a Birkenstock mirror the foot’s shape, which encourages proper growth. And that’s a good first step. •

Colourful
Can Your Shower Experience Be The Answer To Uplifting Your Mood? Brought to you by EBN SINA medical
Do you ever find yourself wearing a certain colour based on the mood you want to be in? Are there days you think to yourself, “Today, I need something that screams power!” and your eyes automatically make their way to a navy blue dress hung neatly or the red power tie for him. Or do you surround your home with different colour themes that provide you with a sense of warmth?
A
ll the ways you surround yourself with colour will have an effect on your mood. Whether it is in your home or within your environment, colour plays a significant role in shifting your mood. It is important to surround yourself with colours that will have a positive effect on you. Colour combined with natural elements such as water, fire, wood, metal, and earth can heighten your mood throughout the day. Some research has shown that the use of colour implemented with everyday practices such as taking a shower can have even more of a wondrous effect on your mood, as it combines colour with water. Shower heads that are especially designed to act like a rain shower can also increase the efficacy of colour enhancements. For ways to enhance your mood using the shower, try combining your shower ritual with the following colours and your mood can shift from sleepy to bright and chirpy in the morning, or help to relax you after a long day of work. Yellow: Cheerful yellow, the colour of the sun is associated with laughter, happiness and good times. A person surrounded by yellow feels optimistic because the brain actually releases more serotonin (the feel good chemical) when around this colour. Orange: The most flamboyant colour on the planet! It’s tied to fun times, happy and energetic days and warmth. It is also associated with ambition and a new dawn in attitude.
108
Red: Red is the colour of life itself, of fire and of blood, and without it our lives would lack vigor, warmth, strength and passion. Red is a bright, warm colour that evokes strong emotions as it’s associated with adoration and fame. Pink: Red is used at holidays that are about love and giving (think red roses, Valentine hearts, Christmas) but the true colour of love is pink. Pink is the most calming of all colours known to calm aggression. Think of pink as the colour of romance, love, and gentle feelings. Violet: Violet, or purple, has traditionally been worn by kings, clergy and those of high rank. This colour stimulates the brain activity used in problem solving. Use this colour when you are regularly asked to take important decisions. Navy Blue: Ask people their favorite colour and a clear majority will say blue.
Much of the world is blue (skies, seas). Seeing the colour blue actually causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming. If your work environment is very chaotic, a blue rain shower will help you become more focused and productive throughout the day. To enrich the colour experience, within your bathroom GROHE offers the Rainshower range, featuring all six colours ensured to brighten your day. The colours each reflect a certain mood and ambiance. Choose the colour that works for you. • Toll free number - 8002288 Available now at selected pharmacies

Butler
By Moona Masri-whitice
Allow me! With those two simple words the venerable St. Regis Butler Service transports guests into a five-star world of bespoke sophistication, uncompromising luxury and unparalleled excellence.
F
ounded in 1904 by the world famous inventor, military officer and entrepreneur, John Jacob Astor IV, the St. Regis hotel traces its history to the Gilded Age of America, when fabulously wealthy families, born during a time off rapid economic growth and industrialization, soon became the country’s new aristocracy. Colonel Astor’s vision for the St. Regis was a hotel where the wealthiest members of society could stay and enjoy all of the trappings afforded the elite by creating the illusion that the guests were staying in a private home, possibly even the home of the Astors themselves. Prior to his untimely death on the maiden voyage of the Titanic in 1912, John Jacob Astor IV saw to it that the St. Regis exceed all of his aspirations and set the standard of luxury as the finest hotel in the world. Some of the things that the modern guest will experience today were influenced by Colonel Astor’s mother, Caroline. Lady Astor introduced many of the rituals that make the St. Regis unique. Guests today can share the same experiences and make the same memories as guests of bygone eras as they sip on fine English Teas served daily in the afternoon, enjoy the smell of freshly cut flowers that fill the hotel or partake in a fine hand-rolled cigar in the evening with friends.

Chatwal Hotel The Golden Age of Gotham back in the Heart of Manhattan By Moona masri-Whitice
Brimming with history and dripping with elegance, the Chatwal in New York City brings to mind to all who enter her storied entrance, a bygone era of early 20th century America when women wore gloves and pearls and men were just a tad more elegant. Located in the heart of Manhattan’s theatre district on 44th Street in what is known as the Great White Way, the Chatwal boasts 76 guest rooms and suites and is truly a story unto herself.
A
BODE was invited to New York to visit the Chatwal, one of the newest additions to Starwood’s Luxury Collection.
The Lobby From the moment we entered the lobby we noticed the unique blending of history with modern features. It became immediately evident that to truly appreciate the Chatwal one must first learn a small bit of the history of the building. The building housing the Chatwal was originally designed by the great architect, Stanford White as the home of the prestigious Lambs Club, America’s first theatrical club, where the Who’s Who of American theatre liked to gather. Built in 1905, the original design was a NeoGeorgian 6 storey brick building. The building’s facade featured 6 ram heads and two ram profiles. The building size was doubled in 1915. Some of the famous members of the Lambs Club you might recognize from the glory days of theatre are Maurice, Lionel and John Barrymore, John Wayne, Douglas Fairbanks and Fred Astaire.

Chatwal Hotel exterior
Fast forward to today. Meticulously restored and modernized by renowned architect Thierry Despont, the Chatwal has been transformed into a modern day classic. The hotel captures the modern elegance of today coupled with the “bygone glamour of early 20th century travel,” and the traditions of the Art Deco era. The Lambs Club Mr. Despont was loyal to the vision of Stanford White when he redesigned the building. Guest will notice the 18th century floor to ceiling stone fireplace in the Chatwal’s beautifully decorated restaurant, The Lambs Club. The fireplace was a gift from Stanford White to the original club. You cannot help but be drawn to the historical black and white photos that line the wall of the restaurant adorned with the faces of past members of the club. The 90 seat Lamb’s Club restaurant decorated with leather banquettes and chrome
fittings harking back to the Art Deco scene of time past. The fare is American cuisine and as the hotel bills it is, “an update on the classic bar and grill concept.” The restaurant also offers the Chatwal’s own delicious signature selections. While your enjoying the restaurant be prepared to rub shoulders with the movers and shakers of the Big Apple, as the restaurant is regularly frequented by artists, editors, business people and politicians. In fact, President Bill Clinton inaugurated the hotel. Lambs Club by Chatwal Hotel

The Suites Again, staying true to the building’s romantic history, the hotel has added the Stanford White suite, which is located in the area that was originally the club’s library. The suite is totally refurbished and boasts the original oak wood panelled walls and beams. The Stanford White suite also has a beautiful granite fire place and a 1,000 square foot outdoor terrace.
Additionally, the Chatwal also boasts 13 guestrooms and suites that have private outdoor terraces, accessed by French doors, each terrace is landscaped and fully furnished. This feature is a rare and true find in New York. Our suite, was a beautifully appointed room with subtle hints to the luxury malletier travel trunk designers of the 18th century. This understated but important feature evokes an era of refined taste, bespoke service and posh elegance. Throughout the room the clever conversion of travel pieces into “crafted object d’art” was so impressive, from the desk and closets to the nightstands and coffee table. However, my very personal
In a special deference to the members of the Lamb, Drew Barrymore graciously agreed to lend her name and the memories associated with her family to the 4,500 square foot Penthouse, located on the Chatwal’s 10th Floor. The Penthouse, named the Barrymore Suite, offers four spacious guestrooms, four bathrooms, 2 sitting rooms, a dining room, a kitchenette and a 1,000 square foot deck overlooking 44th Street. As an added feature the suite can be divided into two separate two bedroom suites. Chatwal Hotel suite bed

favourite was the amenity kit in the bathroom. It was absolutely divine. The hotel features so many other wonderful amenities that draw your attention to detail that the Chatwal exudes. The bed is covered with 400 thread count Frette linens. The bathroom amenities are a combination of luxurious items from Asprey of New York, Kashwere bathrobes and warm Frette towels. In addition, French perfumeur Krigler has specially created “The Chatwal No. 44’’ scent. Krigler perfumes were a favourite of Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, F. Scott Fitzgerald and John F. Frankfurt
am Main: Where New meets Old
WORDS AND IMAGES By F. Webb
“Old meets new” – “east meets west.” These terms may seem a bit worn in this age of hype-oversubstance, but having been settled for more than 2,000 years, Frankfurt has a very legitimate claim to ‘old’ status. And with one of the tallest skylines of post-modern skyscrapers in Europe, one can be forgiven for thinking it to be newer than a 4th generation Apple iPhone.
S
ometimes derisively referred to as ‘Mainhatten’ because of its modern skyline, it is tempting to simply dismiss Frankfurt as a mere financial centre, where the various banks, in an expensive game of vertical one-upmanship, created one of the very few European skylines. The Deutsche Bank twin towers, nicknamed ‘Debit’ and ‘Credit’ are striking examples. Nevertheless, such an offhanded dismissal would be a mistake. Like a French meal, Frankfurt is subtle and complex, but it is a taste that is easily acquired. If Frankfurt is in your future, here are a few items to include on your “To See and Do” list. The Kings and the Criminals. Want to sit in the shadow of a skyscraper, and take in the view of the 600-year-old town square or the spot where Charlemagne (King of the Franks) forded the Main, giving Frankfurt its modern name (Frankford)? Then the Römer should be at the top of your list. The Römer has been the heart of the city since Roman times - hence the name. Emperors were crowned here and criminals were tied to rocks and thrown into the nearby river. If only the cobblestones could talk, what stories they would tell. If you want to see as much of Frankfurt as possible in the shortest time span, then consider one of the many tours via sightseeing coach. You will become an instant expert on Frankfurt and it will give you

some good ideas about where to explore at a more leisurely pace. Most tours originate and terminate at the Römer, and tour passes are valid all day, making it easy to hop-on or hop-off as you like. The Culture and the Couture. How about a dose of culture and some world class shopping all at the same time? A short walk from the Römer is Goethe House and the Goethe Museum. The Arts and the Sciences. Are you in love with museums and just can’t get enough? Frankfurt has what you need in spades. The Church and the State. Are you in the mood to see the birthplace of modern German freedom and democracy? Then a visit St. Paul’s Church is in order. Originally completed in 1833, St. Paul’s was the first building to be reconstructed after World War II. The church stands as a symbol of another, better Germany. Germany’s first free parliament met here in 1848. Reconstructed 100 years later, St. Paul’s Church has only been used for exhibitions and special occasions – such as the Goethe Prize award ceremony and the German book trade’s annual Peace Prize – since 1948.
The Pubs and the People. For a good time involving an adult beverage, try the Sachsenhausen old quarter. The friendly atmosphere, narrow cobbled streets, and more than 100 traditional bars serving locally produced cider, called apfelwein, will lighten your mood in short order. You’ll quickly make new friends. Apfelwein, the most popular drink in Frankfurt, is a bit of an acquired taste, but don’t let that put you off. The second glass will taste better than the first. The people of Frankfurt love nothing more than to sit or stand side by side with visitors in these quaint alehouses and put the world to rights. •

Both are smaller in scale but no less charming and definitely less touristy. Imagine floating on a wooden row boat along Tha Kha’s sugar palm-fringed canals and watch as elderly ladies ply through, their boats laden to the brim with bundles of lotus flowers, farmfresh coconuts and produces. Kids On A Plane! by Jacqueline Bodnar
Planing a trip with the little ones? Here are a few helpful expert tips to get you ready.
“W
e once had our two-year-old scream from Europe to New York because her ears were hurting and she had to be tied down to her seat,” shares Dr. Carina Black, executive director of Northern Nevada International Center and mother of four. “I got so many nasty stares from passengers around us. I still remember the faces, even after five years have gone by.” It’s difficult to predict how a child will react to being on a plane. The most parents can do is to try to be prepared and plan things out ahead of time. If you have a trip in mind that involves boarding a plane, you might want to start thinking now about the time of day to fly, what to take and what to expect.
When to Go
There is no perfect time of day to fly. Some people prefer to go in the morning
132
so they can try to avoid delays. Others opt for taking night flights so that the child is tired and more apt to sleep. However, you may want to take some factors into consideration, depending upon the child’s age. “Special preparation is advisable and necessary for infants up to schoolage children,” explains Dr. Arthur Dover, a pediatrician and travel medicine specialist, “and will reward your child, you, and all your fellow passengers with a more pleasant plane ride.” He suggests that infants are generally the easiest to take on a plane because they tend to sleep a great deal of the time. Babies can easily suck on bottle or pacifier to relieve the discomfort in their ears from pressure changes. That pressure is a common problem, especially during takeoff. Babies taken on planes can be held by a parent, or arrangements can be made to have them in their car seat, which is then
belted into the airplane seat. Children over the age of one are usually more prone to being restless. Taking them on the plane when they’re tired helps, because they’ll want to sleep. For older children, it’s wise to take something for them to drink or eat, like gum or hard candy, to help relieve ear pressure. “Providing books, games and snacks for this age group helps the time pass more easily,” says Dr. Dover. “A harmless homeopathic medication from the health food store, Hyland’s Calms Forté, may be helpful. (First try at home before using it on a trip.)” Dr. Black always buys new toys for the kids, including things like washable markers, notebooks and reading material, to keep them busy. She gives each one

an assortment in their own back pack to keep them busy for a while. New items may help hold their interest longer.
Losing t he Lag
“When passing through several time zones, there is the likelihood of jet lag,” adds Dr. Dover, “which is the delay in our own internal biological clock to adjust to the daylight schedule in the new time zone.” Jet lag is a condition that results from disruptions in the light-and-dark cycles. You and your children can help prevent it by sleeping on the plane and making sure you are hydrated. Also, try to get exposure to sunlight, to help reset your body’s clock. You and your family might also try to go to sleep at the new local bedtime, to help minimize the discomfort of jet lag. •

Flight Attendants top t ips for traveling wit h Kids Relief comes over you as the plane pulls back from the gate. Somehow you managed to entertain a three-yearold and a six-month-old during the three-hour delay at the gate, but it wasn’t easy! You’re all settled in your seat with the kids buckled in, both looking sleepy, when a jolting announcement comes over the PA: “This is your captain speaking. Sorry to inform you folks that ATC has just extended our delay. We’re going to park the plane out here on the tarmac. Should be about an hour before we’re are airborne.” Just then your baby starts screaming and wakes the other child who now decides they’re too cold. You don’t have a blanket, the flight attendants don’t have a blanket, you’ve used your last diaper and have nothing to keep the kids occupied during the delays. Talk about a travel nightmare. As a flight attendant you would be surprised how often I see the scenario play out. My daughter’s first plane ride was when she was three weeks old and she has flown almost once a month since. I have had the advantage of watching families travel for fifteen years before I had to do it, so I am not here to judge; I’m only here to help! One of the most important things you do can when traveling with kids is to properly pack your carry-on. Follow these tips and you’ll find yourself prepared for whatever the airlines throw at you...
travel plus five. You need to plan for mechanicals and other delays.
2} An adequate food supply: If you’re breast feeding then you’re all set. If not, bring enough formula with extra for delays. You are not restricted to the 3.4oz rule when you are traveling with a baby. Check with TSA.gov for more information.
3} Extra clothes: Not just for baby! A shirt for mom and/or dad is advisable in case of spit ups. Also, a small blanket.
4} Ziploc bags: Great for soiled clothes, soiled diapers and even leftover snacks.
5} Ear plugs: Bring enough for your neighbors, as handouts like this will take some stress off potentially tense situations with a screaming or crying child.
a toddler or preschool flier 1} Snacks: Think on the healthy side; save the sugar treat for your destination. Your kids need to maintain a steady blood sugar level. Think of some things they enjoy at home—carrot sticks, granola bars. I actually pack veggies frozen so they stay good throughout the day.
2} Disposable place mats and wipes: You can find these at most grocery stores or online. They fit the tray table and your child can eat and play without worrying about the germs.
3} Empty water bottles, like Sigg or Kleenkanteen: You can fill them up at a water fountain once beyond security.
4} Activities: Think of quiet activities your kids like to do at home. DVD players, paper dolls, activity books, paper and triangle crayons (so they don’t roll off the table) are a few ideas. Make sure you bring a variety!
5}. A CARES harness: This is an acronym for Child Aviation Restraint System. It’s a one pound device that becomes a seat belt harness for kids 22-44lbs. It straps around a regular airplane seat and easily packs into your carry-on. By Sara Keagle (Source: Hotelchatter.com)

A Drive Through The Emirates
By Jorge Granda
The all-new Chevrolet Malibu arrives in the Middle East and ABODE Magazine takes a special drive through the United Arab Emirates to try first-hand the wonders of the newest addition to the Chevrolet family.
O
ur journey to discover the new global midsize sedan, the Chevrolet Malibu starts at the lavish launch of the vehicle at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City. The splendor of our surroundings mixed with the extravagant yet stylish show gives us a hint that this media ride event is one-of-a-kind and the car something to watch out for.
136
The next morning we depart from festival city and embark on a three-hour drive winding through Hajar Mountains. A convoy of around 10 cars is taking part in this unique experience through the astonishing city of Dubai and the dry desert of the Emirates. Two passengers are inside each of the cars in order to assure that each participant of the media trip gets a chance to experience the power of the new Malibu. We are lucky enough to have one of the representatives from Chevrolet driving with us. From the start we can tell the car’s outstanding ride and handling and its impeccable interior. The cabin is very comfortable providing drivers a sensation of security. So far the car is definitely succeeding our expectations. We are told by our companion that engineers have tested, tuned and calibrated the new Malibu on rural roads, highways and freeways, allowing the car to meet top-notch safety regulations. The new Malibu is really a dynamic vehicle that permits the driver excellent control while driving. The car’s performance is

exceptional in almost every scenario; we feel that it can do as much as any 4WD. It drives very smoothly even on rocky grounds. The new Malibu is responsive while we are driving through different roads. The brake system is precise, proving us total control on the highways. Chassis control technologies include four-corner electronic stability control that incorporates full-function traction, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, and corner brake control. Al in all the new midsize Chevrolet Malibu is probably the best mid-size car in the market. •
World-class safety When it comes to safety features, the new Malibu is one of the bestequipped vehicles in the mid-size segment. The new Malibu comes with an array of standard active and passive safety features. A total of six air bags – dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, driver and front side-impact air bags, and roof rail air bags – and dual pretensioners come standard. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are also available.

Chevrolet has a strong heritage in the Middle East – stretching back more than eight decades – where it has established itself as one of the most trusted automotive brands in the region. The Chevrolet portfolio includes passenger cars, crossovers SUVs and pickups, from the Camaro and Corvette performance cars, to award-winning passenger cars including the Spark, Sonic, Cruze and Malibu, to crossovers like the Captiva and Traverse, to the Colorado and Silverado pickups. By Marlynne Mallari - Dela Pena
New sounds to get you moving!
MDNA Madonna
Making Mirror Gotye
Enslaved Soulfly
It seems lady Madge decided to make her divorce the main theme of MDNA! Seven out of 16 songs address her much publicized split directly. But when it comes to the sound, nobody does it like Madonna. The music is a blend of synth-driven electro and sixties-pop classics, Madonna’s music is all about liberation from oppression, another theme that characterizes her songs from the beginning. You keep going back, and find a new layer of depth every time.
Making Mirrors is the third work from Belgian-born Australian artist. The album was released last year and was voted by Triple J listeners’ as number-one album of 2011. It contains the universally and critically acclaimed hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” which was a topper in worldwide charts. The album was certified platinum after one day of its release in Poland. What can we say more? Grab a CD now at Virgin stores!
Soulfly’s sixth album Enslaved is a far cry from their earlier works and is being hailed as one of their better works. This can be attributed to the addition of a new drummer and bassist, who have done much to intensify every beat of each song. Lyrically the new album is at par with their other works. Also included in the album are guest singers like Dez Fafara, Travis Ryan and Max’s kids adding flavor to one of the songs.
Heaven – Rebecca Ferguson Rebecca Ferguson’s debut album “Heaven” was released on December 5. She worked with a roll call of song writers/producers including Eg White, Fraser T Smith and Claude Kelly in New York. “Heaven” features ten new songs, all written by Rebecca, largely with her main co-writer Eg White. This album bares an honest mirror of her life as she stated “I spilled my soul out. A lot of it comes from writing about relationships I’ve been in, so I think everyone can probably relate to the lyrics- we’ve all been there.” The album has already received an ecstatic response, with Neil McCormick from the “Daily Telegraph” commenting that Rebecca would be “the first credible star to come from reality tv”.
