ABODE took a stroll through some beautiful gardens and picked out some lovely patio furniture for our decks. Take a peek at our ideas for inspiration! Indoors, ABODE learned how to make our own bouquets from an expert floral arranger from Casa Flora during a workshop at the Tanagra boutique in Villaggio Mall. We also took a tour of some stunning properties, including Bilal Studios and Alfardan Towers. ABODE travelled around the globe to bring you some of the most beautiful destinations in the world. From the stunning landscape of Italy to the amazing luxury of Oman, ABODE loves exploring the globe for amazing travel spots. Last month, ABODE was pleased to find out that The Qatar Charity has started a humanitarian campaign to give support to the Tunisian families hosting displaced Libyan families. Building Bridges BY NITYA SHUKLA PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

The words freedom and tolerance have followed Chang See-Jong, Ambassador of Korea to Qatar, during his 30-year career as a diplomat, a motto he was taught as a child. ABODE meets Ambassador Chang and his wife, Ms. Lim. 12 ABODE JUNE 2011

ABODE

I

nspiring and light-hearted, an interview with Ambassador Chang proves to a mixed bag of experiences. He takes his duties for his country very seriously but in his next sentence, lightens up by offering a different aspect of himself as he speaks about his love for his dog Jangsoo (meaning longevity). His wife Ms. Lim opened the doors of their residence and offered us insight into their world. Both said in unison that this ongoing stint in Qatar has made a unique impression on their lives. Keen for us to understand Korean culture, Ms. Lim dressed in Hanbok, the traditional Korean costume for women, which combines white and maroon, the colours of the Qatari flag. ABODE spent some time with them to understand their unique perspective the world. ABODE: How and when did you decide to become a diplomat in the first place? CS-J: I hardly remember how I winded up as a diplomat. My atlas was the focus of my interest in my early school years. I still remember how my family would be astonished with my knowledge about countries, their capitals, locations and flags. I had learnt them by heart when I was in grade two or three, but they were simple ones. Later, when I was at middle school, I wrote a small article about the United Nations in the school magazine. This inclination may have led to my diplomat career. ABODE: What qualities are essential to becoming a good diplomat? CS-J: There are numerous merits which should be present in the diplomat character: trustfulness, precision, good temper, patience, modesty, intelligence, discernment, prudence, hospitality, charm, courage, etcetera. These can be said to be the main qualities of a diplomat. I wonder if I even have a few of them. However, the motto of my life is the motto of my high school, “Freedom and Tolerance.” I like this motto. ABODE: Once your work is over how do you like to spend your evenings? CS-J: Frankly speaking, I have no distinctive hobby that I practice regularly. I am aware that this will create a problem

for me during retirement, as it speeds up ageing. However, I am a weekend golfer, and I am really lucky to play at the Doha Golf Club. The local weather helps me sweat and feel fresh and healthy. I used to enjoy hiking in Korea with my dog but that has faded. Now golfing is back. Also, I enjoy classical music and attend the concerts of Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. It gives me a sense of change and helps me meditate sometimes. I love QPO. ABODE: Tell us about your experience in Qatar CS-J: My service in Qatar is a new, amazing life for me. I had served in six stations prior to coming here (none of them in the Middle East). My feelings were really mixed at the beginning, as I feared I would not perform well in a totally new place for me. After around two years here, I can say I would have lost much if I had not come here. The unique culture enriched me with its special way of thinking, beliefs, religions and geography. Simply, I would be really sorry if I had not come here. ABODE: What goes on in a typical day in your life? CS-J: In short, it is very busy. The very active diplomatic leadership of Qatar in the international arena and further advancing in the energy sector makes my hands full all the time. There are an enormous number of events, conferences and forums, in addition to many delegations from Korea. ABODE: What is the best advice you have ever received?

people

an entwined and vibrant relationship. The bilateral relations have never been better than they are now. I always emphasize human exchange as the first and the last way for better and deep relations. H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, visited Korea and we expect another visit soon. Last March, the non-stop daily flight connecting Qatar and Korea was inaugurated. By this inauguration, we laid the basis for more expanded exchange of both people and goods, while the 1000 Qatari LNG cargo was delivered to Korea. On the other hand, I really miss the Qatari investments in Korea. There are great chances in Korea for Qatari investors to grab. Take this the Korean stock market is at its highest point since a decade. This indicates that the prospect of Korean economy is very bright. The foreign investment confidence in the Korean market is strong. I hope to see Qatari investments in Korea in the future. ABODE: What are the activities that you are focusing on? CS-J: My activities focus on “the awareness campaign” sort of public diplomacy. I disseminate all the knowledge and information about Korea here in Qatar as much as I can and try, and vice versa, as I introduce Qatar to Korea and Korean people. For example, I had made a brochure on the excellence of education in Qatar, with special focus on the universities in Education City. I also contributed to the Korean media for the same purpose. ABODE: Tell us about the children’s day festival that you celebrated here

ABODE: How do you view the relationship between Qatar and Korea?

CS-J: I still have vivid memories about this day from the past. I used to be very happy about not going to school and getting gifts from my parents. I wanted to share the joy of this day with the Qatari children. It was very successful. Around fifty Qatari students attended the event. They happily sang the Korean Children’s Day song in Arabic, tried the Korean traditional clothes (Hanbok) and had Korean traditional food. My wife and I were very happy.

CS-J: Qatar and Korea’s long, steady and growing engagement has resulted in such

I believe their experience will bridge better understanding between us. •

CS-J: The most important advice was freedom. This word can be interpreted into “courage” in some sense. Having the guts to go for things, but still you should tolerate all along. These are not only essential to a diplomat, but even to the average person.

ABODE spoke to Turkish entrepreneur Ebru Cerezci, head designer and co-founder of Hiref, a new store at The Pearl-Qatar.

A

n interview conducted over Turkish coffee and Turkish delights, with a Turkish designer who wore with pride a brooch with the crescent Hiref logo representative of Turkey, doesn’t happen every day. So when ABODE heard that Ebru Cerezi was in town for the launch of her Hiref store, we jumped at the chance to chat with her over some of her national delicacies. Hiref, the design concept and the products, are both made from scratch, bringing to focus handmade handicrafts, an art that that is quickly losing its importance in the current fashion scene. Each product that you see on these pages, has been hand crafted and bears the stamp of authenticity borne only from the work of loving hands. Cerezci decided to focus on the art of original handicrafts because she believed that the art was

collection. “Every product has a story. The collection here in Qatar is limited so our customers have the chance to see something unique,” Cerezci explained. One of the highlights of the collection being showcased at The Pearl-Qatar is a heavy handcrafted metal Hiref-style Kaftan, which took a month to finish and has been embedded with Swarovski crystals. In each collection, there are a plethora of products such as ornament plates, candle holders, candle sticks, ornament boxes, trays, jars, tumblers, tea plates, prayer beads, bowls, coffee trays, tealight holders, teacups, the Kaftan collection and the silver-plated collection. “Our luxury accessory brand is focused on table top items. We try to make our designs for use as well,” Cerezci said.

something that was losing its importance and she was keen to bring the craft back into focus. “In the beginning, the idea of Hiref came when we realized that there was a dearth of upscale brands that were cultural and were luxurious quality in terms of design and production,” Cerezci said. Thus began the journey of Hiref, which was created by Cerezci and Guvenc Kilic in 2003. Today, Hiref is a brand that is celebrated all over the world and rubs shoulders with international brands such as Harvey Nichols, Moser, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Christfle. The brand’s artworks recently became the first non-European Union products to be available for purchase on the website Amazon.co.uk. Cerezci attributed the success of the brand to the art of handicrafts. The basis of the brand is that Hiref is about a community of master artisans with a collective responsibility and Cerezci’s attempt to give back to society. The high-end luxury brand has collections in Motifs, Agate, Beykoz (glassware), Copper metalwork, which included hammering with a special technique, word carvings, which are traditional to Anatolia, and Ottoman handicraft traditions. Besides these, are also illustrations on Chinaware, modern interpretations of the traditional Ottoman helmet, a 24-carat gold collection, a silver-plated collection and the Abdan

Each design is rooted in the design elements from the ancient times in Turkey. “We are gifted, so why don’t we use it? Cerezci asked. “I appreciate and take advantage of my culture. Being from Turkey, from an Islamic culture, we have to appreciate ourselves. So I don’t even imitate Western designs styles. I did follow and examine them. But I always try to take advantage of my own soul and my own genes and that’s the key to our success.” It took more than a year for Hiref to come to Qatar in partnership with United Fashion Company (UFC). Cerezci underlined the importance of finding the right partner. “It’s like marriage - you have to find the right guy. To find the right partner is very important,” Cerezci said. Cerezci a woman of many achievements. She recently was bestowed with the title of Woman Entrepreneur of Turkey 2009 by Garanti Bank and Ekonomist Magazine and the Women Entrepreneur Association of Turkey. She was chosen as the best designer of the year, in the table top design section, by one of the most prominent interior design magazines, Elle Decor, in 2007. Today, as a designer, teacher and an entrepreneur, she is admired for her ability to juggle so many roles. But ask her about what role she enjoys the most and she’ll surprise you. “I’m a mother of two girls and that is the hardest and the happiest role that I have,” she said, revealing a very different side of her that was like a breath of fresh air.

When I about his new position, how he got started with Four Seasons and think of how Doha has evolved in so many positive ways over the past years it’s truly why he plans to continue his relationship with the Canadian chain. amazing. From a lifestyle point of view, the range of restaurants, shopping and cultural attractions has increased greatly. All of this makes the seven years seem like much less, as the city is constantly changing. As a business, I think we have matured well and gained the patina of a truly great hotel.

ABODE: How did your career with Four Seasons start?

SC: In 1989, when I joined the Inn on the Park in London as an assistant manager at the front desk. The past 22 years have flown by and I feel fortunate to have found early a company to spend my entire career with.

ABODE: You’ve worked in North America, Europe and now the Middle East. What have you learned from your time in each place?

ABODE: What attracted you to the hospitality industry?

SC: At 14 years old, I was washing dishes in an upscale restaurant in my home village in Wales. Elbow deep in pots and pans, I used to look through the swinging doors and see the life, glamour and excitement out in the restaurant. I was convinced at that time that the hospitality industry was the one for me.

SC: That everywhere you go you will find people who, once called to a common and worthy goal, will lift themselves up to achieve it. The Four Seasons philosophy and business ethos is all around how you treat people and that translates to everywhere I have worked.

SC: In addition to running our hotel here in Doha, I now also oversee our hotels in Amman, Jordan, Damascus, Syria, Cairo at the First Residence, Egypt and Beirut, Lebanon. I will also be overseeing the new Four Seasons Doha at the PearlQatar, which is so exciting.

ABODE: What do you hope to achieve in your new role as regional vice president?

SC: It’s really about adding value to these additional properties and their teams as a critical friend and strategic guide. Whether they are guests, employees, or business partners, the dynamics of human relationships are always defining and central to getting things done productively. SC: Having led the creation of the hotel; it is wonderful to be a part of such a success story. We took the market by storm when we opened and still hold a commanding leadership position to this day. I’m competitive, so I enjoy that aspect. What keeps me coming in

SC: Being carried aloft on the shoulders of the employees on the day we opened the hotel will always be engrained in my mind. Forum Design chose a classic and durable brown and beige palate that would hold up in an area that would get a lot of use. Who doesn’t love to curl up and watch a good movie? A high-quality TV is an essential part of any home entertainment set up. However, knowing what TV to buy can be daunting. There are a million different kinds of television sets these days. If the words FHD, LED, DLNA and plasma sound like jumbled jargon to you, consult an expert at a store like Techno Blue (they represent Samsung), before committing to one kind of TV, home theatre system, blu-ray disc or DVD player.

1

Samsung SMART TV- LED8000_55_R45 Ask your friends what kinds of televisions they have and find out if they are happy with the type and brand and why. Pick the television that best suits your needs, in a size that will suit the space you will be putting it in (for example, don’t buy a 72-inch television if you only have room for a 42-inch). Pick out an ornate box to keep all of your remotes in. This cuts down on clutter, while adding a splash of beauty to the room. Plus, you’ll never have to search for the remote again! Another alternative is to buy a coffee table with a built-in place for the remote, like this cleverly-designed table from BoConcept.

A Walk to

Remember BY NITYA SHUKLA PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

As the summer sun starts to burn, ABODE took the chance to cool our eyes with views of lush greenery in the fabulous gardens at the Al Sulaiti Villa. The owner, Sheikha Jabar Al Sulaiti, and Gohar S. Tutunjian, senior architect for VGC-Arplan, have worked together to make this lush green dream come true. The fantastic landscape gardens are still thriving with blooming flowers and bearing fruits of their collective labour of love. 30 ABODE JUNE 2011

B

ursting with an array of flowers, fruits and vegetables, we find that Sheikha Sulaiti has a special fondness for scented and beautiful flowers and that each garden had been designed specifically to give each part a different personality. For Sheikha Sulaiti, maintaining, creating and building a garden reflects the beauty of nature that has been her obsession for the last twenty years. So much that she brings seeds or small plants back from each trip she makes abroad. When asked what makes her keep at it, she simply said that it gives her great happiness to wake up to this greenery every day. “You have to love it these plants like your children, Gohar added. To ensure that each patch has an individual personality, each garden has been planned out differently.

garden

Gohar S. Tutunjian

As you enter the villa, the first patch is like a showcase area where many unique flowers and fruit trees like papaya and bananas have been planted. To add interest, several rare varieties of flowers have been planted to generate a wow factor. The walkway laden with pansies leads to another separate garden, this time fitted with a fountain, and works as a formal social area with several different kinds of flowers. Here we found flowers like desert roses, palm trees, ixora, guava and a lemon tree, to name a few. As you continue to walk on, you find yourself going to the more private gardens, complete with a pool. What’s special about this part of tour is that it is laden with many varieties of scented flowers like roses, Indian jasmine, Arabic jasmine, night queen, rose of the afternoon (this particular flower blooms only towards late afternoon), Euphorbia, Jacomonthia, seasonal climber, Karkade (a kind of hibiscus variety used in herbal tea) and the Jathrope. Sheikha Sulaiti

IMPORTANCE OF EXPERIMENTING

was quick to point out that this served as a place for private occasions. Gohar informed us that in each garden the plants have been planned in layers so that the eye travels to each corner. Also, care has been taken to ensure that these vast gardens have been fitted with an automated sprinkler system to keep them going. The next part of the garden is concentrated more on fruits such as the Chinese watermelon, American pumpkins and olives. A special feature we see here is the unique Japanese grass that tends to grow in clusters. This is again repeated in the last nook that was set aside for small budding plants. What’s more, each of the gardens has been planned with seasonal and permanent plants in mind. Typically, the planting season starts in September and continues until the soaring heat in summer wilts the plants.

When it comes to creating a garden from scratch, Gohar said that unique climate of Qatar must be kept in mind. She said that one can experiment with scented plants as well. The best knowledge, she said, comes from shared experiences. “When you come to Qatar you open gardening books, you visit nurseries and you meet horticulturalists and that’s how you start to learn,” Gohar said. It is important, she added, to try new techniques. “You have to try new things; once you plant, you have to follow it. It’s not just the right fertilizer; you have to monitor their progress continuously and see which corner they grow best in,” Gohar said. “If you have four varieties planted you won’t need anything else and you can concentrate on flowering plants.” Sheikha Sulaiti said that plants grow with love and therefore it is important to nurture them, protect them and monitor their progress closely. After seeing the results of her hard work, we are left with memories of a garden stroll we’ll remember forever. •

In Opulent Times BY NITYA SHUKLA PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

A 600-year-old recipe recreated in 2011 - that’s the magic Chef Baran is wielding at Sukar Pasha. ABODE finds out the secret of the recipes that are as dashing as the charismatic chef.

S

tepping inside Sukar Pasha is like stepping back into the opulent times when the Ottoman rulers reigned in Turkey. From regal royal furnishings and elegant interiors to the style with which each meal is presented, you will feel like nothing less than a king when you dine here. What’s more, Sukar Pasha boasts of a fantastic menu, which combines modern contemporary Turkish cuisine and dishes that were created 600 years ago in the Ottoman times. The man behind this magic is A. Baran Yucel, Turkish chef de cuisine. He is a dashing young chef of merely 35 years of age, who puts a lot of time and thought into each dish he presents. It is this constant pursuit of perfection and his obsession with authentic Turkish and Ottoman cuisine that makes him such a delight to speak with. He can you tell you stories about the history of the Ottoman, like the how the popular snack shawarma was called the ‘döner’ in the olden times. What’s more, he finds it effortless to balance the contemporary styles of cooking with the ways of the bygone times. “We (Sukar Pasha) have a mix of old Turkish cuisine and the new contemporary Turkish cuisine. 600 years ago even the desserts were cooked with lamb fat. But today we avoid it and use butter,” Baran said. “There are only few books officially about ottoman cuisine. I’m sure many great dishes have been lost.” He gives equal importance to the presentation and style. “Before you dig into the food, the design should impress you because that means I am impressing you there and then,” Baran explained. When asked why he became a chef, he doesn’t hesitate to explain. “I am from Mengen, where 90 per cent of the

population are chefs,” Baran said. “It so happened that 600 years ago, all the cooks in the Ottoman Empire were from Mengen.” This tradition has continued since those times and he too followed tradition to become a chef. To this day, he hasn’t had a moment of doubt about his profession. At no time has he felt like getting away from his role as the head chef. For him, innovation in cooking is a constant process. He can be found every evening greeting his guests, analysing their feedback, tweaking dishes for their benefit and guiding his team. “If I receive a bad comment from a guest, I cannot sleep and I have to correct it,” Baran admitted.

“We have a saying back home in Turkey: if you cook the jam well, the fly will come from Baghdad.” When asked about the secret of his recipes that has Qatar raving about Sukar Pasha, his answer was quite surprising. “There is no recipe, there is just a technique. You must see the chemical process of the food,” Baran said. “You can memorize a thousand recipes but if you don’t know the technique, then there is no point. Just learn the techniques and you will create your own recipes.” Recipe books are of no interest to him except for educating himself on the history of Ottoman cuisine. For him, a proper education, constant research and investigation into the art of cooking and perfecting the basics are much more important. “We have a saying back home in Turkey: if you cook the jam well, the fly will come from Baghdad,” Baran said.

A man with many interesting stories and examples, he makes his job seem effortless. He basks in the success of Sukar Pasha and points out that the Turkish cuisine is not complicated. “You don’t have to be a magician to figure it out,” Baran said. “You just get a fresh product and you cook it well ... so that the lamb tastes like a lamb and the chard leaves taste like chard leaves.” Having come from a background of being a hotel chef, he loves the freedom that being a restaurant chef gives him. “If you are a hotel chef you cannot keep serving the same cuisine all the time,” Baran said. “Here I can serve my own country in a small way.” This keeps him happy and energetic. “If you want to be a chef, you need to forget about your family, you need to forget about a social life. Very few investments will allow you to live your own social life. You should keep investigating, you should keep searching and you should keep reading because there is no end. You can never say I have read enough, I have learnt enough and I am a good chef,” Baran passionately explained. For ABODE, he decided to recreate a 600-year-old recipe. “My signature recipe is based on Gaziantep, Turkey, which is one of the cities in Turkey that still serves food from the Ottoman times,” Baran said. “The name of the dish is Ali Nazik, a very famous dish back home.” Cooking for such a perfectionist must surely cause trouble on the home front. But Baran prefers to eat simple dishes. “When I am hungry I always eat Dürüm, (a wrap made of kebab, soft bread, yogurt, tomatoes, salads and some spices),” Baran said. “Whenever I am hungry that is the only food I desire.” •

Beginning Steps for Any Arrangement

• Pick out which kind and

colour of flowers you’d like in your bouquet. Don’t be afraid to mix colours and types of flowers, advised Kanaan. You can pick one kind of flower in two or more colours, or a variety of flower types in several colours.

• Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the flowers using a small

paring knife so that no foliage will be underwater. Any blooms that are not thriving should also have their stems re-trimmed with scissors, said Kanaan.

• Decide what kind of bouquet you’d like to have. Consider what kind of

vase you will be using before you pick out your bouquet style. A classic bouquet goes great in a round vase, whereas a grouping design works best in a square vase. Roses or exotic flowers with long steams look beautiful in a flat vase.

feature

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT

For a classic bouquet: Place the stems of one type of flower in between your thumb and index finger. Hold those flowers there, then place another bunch of flowers across the first batch of flowers, making an “x.” Continue with this crisscross pattern until you have all of your flowers together in one bunch. Then chop off the extra stems and tie a bow around the bouquet using silver twine. This type of bouquet will be able to stand up on its own and looks wonderful in a round vase. For an extra-stylish touch, tie a vine around the bouquet over the silver twine. For a grouping design: Separate flowers by type into small bundles. Wrap scotch tape tightly around each individual bundle of flowers. Pick five bundles to put in a square vase. Arrange flowers on an angle in the vase, then wrap a vine around the vase for an added effect. For a unique design: Insert a flower sponge into the bottom of a flat vase. Wrap a vine around the sponge if you wish to disguise the sponge. ArAr range leaves in the bottom of the vase by inserting them into the sponge. Use exotic flowers in a truly beautiful vase, advised Kanaan. In this kind of arrangement, you want one main type of flowers, such as orchids or Amazon lilies, to be the focus of the arrangement. Place several bunches of flowers, enough to fill the vase on top of the leaves. For a splash of colour, add a single rose in a bright colour, such as peach. Add in a small amount of greenery as a finishing touch.

Tips •

A well-maintained bouquet can stay fresh for up to 10 days, if the blooms are handled properly. “Begin by unpacking your fresh flowers as soon as possible, then re-cut the stems by up to half an inch,” Kanaan advised. “Then place them directly into lukewarm, rather than cold, water.”

To keep flowers looking fresh, re-fill the vase with water on a regular basis.

Keep bouquets away from drafts, direct sunlight and ripening fruit in order to help keep flowers look their best.

Check the flowers every day and remove any wilted blooms.

If your roses aren’t open, add some sugar to the water to make them bloom

If you’d like to learn first-hand the art of floral arranging, you can arrange for a floral class for you and your friends at Sharq Village and Spa. Floral Classes are QR 150 per person and are available upon request for ten participants and over. For more information, call 4425-6666.

haircare

Shiny, happy hair BY SYDNEE BRYANT

Want shiny, healthy hair? Of course you do! But the scorching sun and dry desert heat can take its toll on your locks, leaving them frayed and flat. Here are some ways to ensure your mane looks fabulous, not fried.

H

eat is an essential part of any great hair style. Ironically, heat is also hair’s biggest enemy. Heat damage from styling tools such as blow dryers and straightening or curling irons only adds to the damage done by the heat of the sun. Give you hair a break and air dry your locks every other day. If that’s simply not an option, invest in hairstyling tools that minimize damage with innovative technology.

MUST HAVE – CONSISTENT TEMPERATURE The Braun Satin Hair 7 Airstyler with IONTEC. This styling brush is designed to regulate the temperature, ensuring that heat is transmitted evenly along the brush. When heat is sent out evenly, it reduces sudden hot spots and the subsequent damage that can come with them. An even heat source is the key to properly styling hair without frying the hair cuticle. The Braun Satin Hair 7 Blow Dryer with IONTEC is also an essential tool for your hair styling arsenal, with a calibrated fan. The fan allows the blow dryer to stay at a consistent temperature for whichever heat setting you like to use. The dryer’s antioverheating function also helps protect hair from drying out.

MUST HAVE – SHORTER STYLING TIME

The Sephora Tourmaline Flat Iron has one inch wide ceramic floating plates infused with crushed tourmaline, which helps the ionic properties of the plates work fast. The combination of ionic power and tourmaline are ideal for flat irons, as the combination means that hair is straightened faster, which minimizes heat damage and hair cuticle damage. As a bonus, the black tourmaline also breaks down bacterial build up on your hair, leaving it healthier.

MUST HAVE – PROTECTIVE SPRAY Results Take Aways Moisture-Seal moisture burst blow-dry spray by charles Worthington not only helps to rehydrate hair but also locks in moisture to protect the hair from heat. It is essential to spray a heat protector or blow-dry spray on your hair every time you use heated styling tools in order to add a layer of protection between your hair and the heat, while also adding moisture back into the hair cuticle. As a bonus, this spray also strengthens hair and adds volume to limp locks. •

SUMMER SMOOTHIE SENSATIONS BY SYDNEE BRYANT PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

S

moothies are more complex in nature than one may think – they each have their own texture, thickness, flavour and aroma. Executive chef Christian Jean is extremely passionate about what goes into each one of his smoothie recipes. That’s why smoothies and fresh juices are one of the first things the chef sorted out, planning out recipes and logistics for juice stations and a smoothie bar before the hotel has even opened. “We plan to have a healthy buffet with a selection of freshly squeezed juices and a smoothie bar, which will change, of course, according to the season, the market, the availability of the fruits we can find,” Jean said. “We will come up with some creative drinks.” Jean, along with executive sous chef Jose Ochoa and Moritz Neumann, chef for New York Steakhouse, has come up with a variety of recipes for fresh smoothies. They draw inspiration for recipes from books and trial and error. Then they mix and match ingredients together until they find just the right combination. Smoothies will be a part of everyday life at Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel.

68 ABODE JUNE 2011

Smoothies are a very versatile beverage: they can be enjoyed for breakfast, as a snack or as an alternative to so-called “energy” drinks. ABODE spoke with Christian Jean, executive chef at the new Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel, to find out some of his special smoothie recipes.

Everyone who comes to Crossroads Kitchen, one of nine restaurants that will open at Renaissance this summer, will receive a welcome smoothie to help them start their day. Regular guests of the hotel can expect a vast selection of smoothies to keep them intrigued. There are many benefits to drinking freshly made juices and smoothies, such as increased energy, said Jean. The high level of vitamins found in smoothies made

with fresh fruit mean they are usually an antioxidant treasure trove, perfect for protecting our immune systems while fighting off infections. As a bonus, smoothies are easy to make at home and take only minutes to prepare. Jean and his team whipped up five of their signature smoothies for Abode, plus an extra-special smoothie inspired by and named for the magazine. •

Ingredients: 5 large strawberries • 1 cup ice • 1 cup watermelon chunks • 3-4 mint leaves • 200 ml skim milk • 3 tbsp yogurt

THE ABODE Jean whipped up this special recipe in honour of Abode. It’s sweet, frothy and fun, and can be enjoyed on a regular basis!

Method: Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Tips: For added sweetness, add highquality honey to taste.

Swedish

Secrets BY NITYA SHUKLA AND SYDNEE BRYANT PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

Production time in magazines is a stressful period. Tempers fly and all of the stress culminates in hunched shoulders and an over-stressed spine. Fortunately, a Swedish massage at Secrets 974, on Salwa Road, is all you need to get going.

B

y the time I left work on Thursday night, I had zero intention of writing any more articles, answering any emails or even taking any calls from my friends to celebrate the weekend. I ended up flopping on my bed, face down, and sleeping till 10:00 a.m. the next morning, hoping that that would be enough to make me feel better. No such luck. I woke up next day feeling worse - tired and exhausted. And Doha’s increasing temperature just added to my glum irritability. Fortunately though, as luck would have it, the ABODE girls had a spa review planned at Secrets 974 on the same day. After quick pick up, off we went in search of fresher, happier versions of ourselves. Secrets 974 is located on the Salwa road, just near the Qatar National Bank.

70 ABODE JUNE 2011

However, due to the massive ongoing construction on that road, we ended up lost and worse, delayed by over half an hour. Then again, that’s what you do have to love about these intimate ladies only salons ... they don’t frown when you’re late and have missed your appointment. They welcome you, as we were by the friendly staff of Secrets 974, who whisked us away after a quick tour of the place to our individual rooms to try their packages. As I discovered a few hours later, a Swedish massage proved to be the perfect solution for my exhaustion, while Sydnee found her salvation in a rejuvenating facial treatment. Why Basics Work A Swedish massage is a staple in most spas in Qatar. However, the trick is, of course, to find someone who

can understand your body and work accordingly. Having requested a strong level of pressure, I soon realized that I might have overestimated my own ability to handle a deep tissue massage. However, I am glad that my masseuse for the day, a rather quiet Janet, chose to fight the battle for me, with a vow to knead every darn tense nerve from my system. She told me to relax and take it easy. And so I did, falling in a deeper state of consciousness the minute my head hit the pillow. The traditional Swedish massage was designed to help relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. This increases the oxygen flow in the blood and releases

Facials are the ultimate example of the mantra “pain is beauty.” While facials are extremely beneficial for the skin and can be quite relaxing, they also involved extractions that are, at best, uncomfortable, and, at worst, excruciating. Fortunately, my facial at Secrets 974 fell somewhere in between. The majority of my time on the table was enjoyable, with a few minutes of awkward pain thrown in for good measure. After all, if extractions didn’t hurt, how would I know they had worked? My spa technician started by cleansing my face and removing my eye makeup. She then proceeded to gently but thoroughly exfoliate my face with a grainy scrub. The technician brought out a little whirring machine and gently swooshed it along my face to remove dead skin. While the buzzing noise concerned me, I could barely feel the machine on my skin. She then steamed my pores to open them before extracting impurities from my skin. The technician squeezed bumps and blackheads from my nose, forehead, chin and cheeks for what seemed like hours before finally applying a thick lotion to my skin to seal in moisture. The creamy lotion was comforting and the technician’s hands were far gentler than they were during the extractions. Afterwards, my clear skin glowed for days, proving that facials are worth the pain.

toxins from the muscles. Janet began with a firm, yet gentle, pressure to smooth the knots in my back, neck and shoulders. She gently used her fingertips in gliding strokes to ease and prepare my body for the massage and then proceeded to knead the muscles. Next, she applied circular pressure with her palms to shake the body off the millions of nerve balls that were clogging my body. She ended each part with brisk tapping. Towards the end, Janet focused her energies on squeezing, kneading and massaging my shoulders with a lot more pressure than I thought I would be able to handle. At times like these though, I’d say it is best let your masseuse do their job. I’m glad I did since I woke up from my session feeling tremendously light and hyper energetic. No wonder Swedish massages are highly recommended in regular programs for stress management. The basics always work!

SAFE TANNING TRIED AND TESTED By Tina Zuccarini

With summer approaching, we flock to the beaches with an overwhelming desire to beat the heat. However, while sipping cool drinks or applying layer upon layer of coconut oil do we ever consider the effects of the sun on our skin?

The Sun’s Radiation Energ y is t ransmi t te d f rom the sun a s radiation of different wavelengths through space. This radiation consists of an enormous range of wavelengths collectively known as the electromagnetic spectrum. This includes: x-rays, gamma rays, radio waves, microwaves, ultraviolet (UV) rays, visible light and infrared radiation. They all transfer energy from one point to another at a given frequency. UVA Rays These are lower energ y UV rays, which penetrate deep into the skin and, by fragmenting the collagen and elastin fibres, they become responsible for aging skin.

72 ABODE JUNE 2011

UVB Rays These waves are responsible for sunburn and are unfortunately the rays chiefly responsible for causing skin cancers. Effects of UV Radiation In small doses, the radiation from natural sunshine is beneficial to most people. • It warms the body • It stimulates the production of Vitamin D, important for the development of healthy bones and the healthy functioning of nerves and muscles by regulating calcium levels in the blood. • It promotes a feeling of well-being • It is cosmetic in effect, as it produces a tan,

LIFESTYLE

focus

giving the appearance of good health. •It has a beneficial ef fect on some skin disorders Damaging Effects of UV Radiation • In an effort to protect underlying tissue the skin thickens and, with time, appears coarse or ‘leathery.’ • Sunburn is painful and damaging • Long-term overexposure to UVA rays will cause aging of the skin; UVB rays may cause skin cancer. Sunscreens There are two types of sunscreens: physical and chemical. The physical sunscreen is opaque and leaves a fine film, which, when applied, reflects the UV rays. The chemical type sunscreen absorbs UV radiation and therefore reduces its intensity. It comes in the form of a cream, oil, milk or lotion. Some brands are waterproof. The best t ype of sunscreen product is a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which will filter out both the UVA and UVB rays.

SPF Sun Protection Factor SPF is determined by the amount of time the sunscreen can extend the time that a person can spend in the sun without burning. For example, a person who could stay in the sun for 10 minutes before burning could extend that period of time to 60 minutes without burning by using a sunscreen with an SPF of six. For maximum benefit, apply sunscreen before going into the sun and reapply regularly during the day.

Due to the use of an airbrush there are none of the streaks or orange patches that are of ten associated with tanning creams. Fantasy Tan is luxurious, affordable and looks great. •

Safe Tanning False tan treatments There are a growing number of people who prefer not to expose themselves to the effects of UV radiation but still want to tan. Spray tanning is the ideal solution. Fantasy Tan Fantasy tan invented the airbrushing tanning concept in 1997 and has changed the way people view sunless tanning today. This revolutionary system applies a formula via a unique airbrush technique that produces a gentle, even mist. The formula contains DHA (dihydrox yacetone), which has a reaction with the amino acids in the top layer of one’s skin – inducing a similar reaction to the sun only without the harmful effects of UVA radiation.

“THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL OR THE BEAUTY OF THE AL HUSN HOTEL.”

ABODE had the privilege of experiencing the extraordinary Al-Husn Hotel. From the moment we arrived at the Oman Airport, an elegant chauffer service was waiting to pick us up and whisk us away for a twoday weekend excursion. Only one hour away from Qatar from start to finish, we travelled on Qatar Airways, departing Doha at 3:15 p.m. and arriving Muscat at 5:35 p.m. (there is an hour difference between Doha and Muscat). spa was approximately 45 minutes from the airport. As we approached the resort, we were astonished by the beauty of the dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains that surround the entrance of the resort. There are no words to describe the attention to detail or the beauty of the Al Husn hotel. Upon entering the lobby, they have hot towels to greet you, while frankincense is burned to relax and stimulate your senses. The Al Husn, with its castle-like appearance, faces the breathtaking Gulf of Oman. The view from our balcony left nothing to be desired. Our attendant explained that we would enjoy an array of exclusive facilities, including an infinity pool and a private beach that actually was only accessible with a room key. Waiting for us in the room wasa delicious fruit plate, a daily complimentary mini bar full of drinks, nuts and chocolate,

specialty soaps and lotions and even beautiful complimentary woven slippers. We enjoyed an incredible buffet dinner at the Al Tanoor restaurant, where we dined on grilled lobster, roasted lamb and a host of traditional Arabic salads. Al Tanoor is a Middle Eastern restaurant that offers Asian and some European dishes, all of which are amazing, but our favourite dish was the grilled lobster. We retired to the sounds of the waves upon the shore coming from the ocean below us. The next day we had a delicious breakfast at Sultanah restaurant. This beautiful restaurant is designed as if it were a ship sailing in the Omani Seas. The restaurant provides guests with a variety of choices and even has a gluten-free menu a la carte. I loved the divine gluten-free bread with honey. Afterwards, we literally allowed our cares to melt away on the private beach.

The attention to detail in the service was astounding. Beach attendants looked after us meticulously by providing us with an assortment of complimentary items, such as a small cooler with water, sodas and fresh sliced fruit. They even cleaned our sunglasses! We were devastated as dusk approached, as we knew our day in this amazing resort was ending. Time turns to dust in your hands and you wish you had more of it to extend your stay. It literally was the best resort we have ever experienced in our lives. The hotel chauffeur service took us back to the Muscat International Airport, as we looked back at what seemed to be a mirage in the desert. •

Your Holiday Long and Leisurely Now that the slow, sweet summer season has arrived, it’s time to fully relax by taking a long vacation abroad. Whether you want to relax in luxury or see every sight imaginable, France, Canada and Italy are all fabulous travel destinations when you have a few weeks to spend exploring the globe.

Paris, France

T

he city of lights is the most-visited tourism destination on earth, and for good reason. From art to music to history to food, every type of traveller can find a reason (or two, or three) to fall in love with Paris – but for a price. One way to save if you are travelling in a small group is to find an apartment for the duration of your trip: try paristay.com. Another way to conserve your Euros for a shopping spree on Avenue Montaigne and blend in with Parisians is to eat and walk, so pick up a croissant “to go” from one of the city’s countless boulangeries for breakfast. Then splurge at dinner – and be warned, it’s not hard. Bring comfortable shoes; the best way to see Paris is on foot. Start at L’Arc de Triomphe and continue down the Champs Elysées, stopping along the way to sample the world’s best macarons at La Durée. Detour up to Montmartre and hire one of the roving artists to draw your picture as a souvenir while you take a break on a patio with an espresso. If your feet get tired, rent a bicycle at a Vélib station and bike up and down the Seine River for a truly Parisian experience. If the Eiffel Tower is a must-do for you, be sure to get there early in the day to beat the lineups and take the stairs up to the second level for the least obstructed view before taking the elevator up to the top. •

t’s not hard for anyone to feel at home in Toronto: as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, cuisine, theatre, art and music from a spectrum of cultures can be found in the city’s many ethnic neighbourhoods. Stay in one of the Drake Hotel’s 19 luxurious rooms and be within walking distance of some of the city’s hippest shopping and eateries. Take part in the city’s weekend brunch culture with a unique take on the mid-day meal at Saving Grace in the city’s west end. Then stroll over to the Art Gallery of Ontario, which was recently redesigned by Frank Gehry. Continue on to Kensington Market, a vibrant neighbourhood home to vintage shopping, independent cafes and impromptu street concerts before swallowing any fear of heights and going up the CN Tower, the world’s tallest freestanding structure. Settle in for dinner at the Black Hoof to sample the most-talked about charcuterie in the city (even Gordon Ramsay recently gave it his stamp of approval). A beach in Bordighera

Capo San Ampelio

Coast of Bordighera

Bordighera, Italy BY KRISTINA HELG

B

ordighera is a pampering cradle for all your senses. From the sight of palm tree alleys leading you along the curvy coastline to the medieval stone structure of the old town ruling the area like a fortress on the rocks, Bordighera is a joy for the eyes. Your sense of smell is spellbound by the perfume of the pine trees descending the mountains to mix in with the salty breeze brought in by the friendly currents. Your taste-buds are tingled by the tenderness of the freshly-caught fish, the smoothness of the olives harvested on the hills and the full flavours of the organically-farmed vegetables offered every Thursday and Friday at the weekly market. Music for the ears is played by the calming song of the sea caressing the tiny white stones of the beach and the soft whistle of the mountain winds coming down to Bordighera to bring freshness into the summer heat. Make the best of your vacation by staying in one of the hotels on the promenade “Lungomare Argentina.” Starting with the Swedish-Italian family-owned flamingo pink Hotel Piccolo Lido, the beach walk offers several alternatives for accommodation. Try the ultimate Italian breakfast - cappuccino and brioche – at one of the many bars located around the city, most of which open at 7:00 a.m. Commercial activities close around 7:00 p.m. and people go for “apperitivos” (appetizers) before dinner. Many private beaches turn into lounges after the sun sets and offer visitors a light buffet with a drink. The

ambiance is cozy, relaxed, and if you walk a bit, you’ll certainly find the music that best reflects your style. If you still want to eat dinner after the apperitivos, the old town is an absolute must, as it offers a vast selection of smaller family-run restaurants, all with delicious dishes. Having walked the promenade and visited the medieval centre, you may want to see more of the coast. The famous musical capital San Remo is only half an hour drive east along the coast. Take the bus or drive 600 metres above sea-level to Perinaldo to get a great view of the coast. The sandy beaches of Mentone are on your way to the sizzling nightlife of Nice or Monte Carlo. Once you hit the highway, even Cannes seems close to Bordighera. For those who just want to take it easy and recharge, Bordighera’s public beaches are always an option, even if only for half a day. •

An Explosion in Colour BY NITYA SHUKLA PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

ABODE’s Artist of the Month is Australian artist Jennifer Pinder, a commissioned artist who has had her works showcased around the globe. We find out how colour, pattern and movement become the central element to each piece this artist creates.

As we viewed the paintings, Pinder would let us be mystified and wait for us to draw our own interpretations before speaking about what made her paint that particular piece. “The pattern (in the paintings) is simple but you keep finding something very different,” Pinder said. “It’s really

Working with canvas sizes of at least one and a half metre, Pinder’s paintings are big and command your attention, even if placed in a corner. “They are big paintings but they work very well on small walls. It’s not a landscape or a portrait. With this,

Having grown up in the tropics in Australia, Pinder was always surrounded with colours, an element that is present in both the Spikes and the Weaves series. “I love colour and I’m in the land of sand,” Pinder explained. “Colour makes me feel like I’m home (in Australia).” Colour, she feels, has the power to make or break interiors. It does not have to be in the bigger details; even a small red vase can make an otherwise simple room pop, said Pinder. What’s more, her art is unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. “These (spikes) are painted for texture, they are painted for the movement; when you look at the side, they change when you walk around them,” Pinder said. While people may point out the apparent similarities between Pinder’s Spikes series and another artist’s Australian Aboriginal art series that also has dots, Pinder explains that the two series are different. Pinder said that whilst she likes to play with shapes, Aboriginal art always tells stories. “My art is about mood, texture and play on light. Aboriginal art is journey/ story based,” Pinder explained. Having been involved in high fashion at one point in her career, Pinder developed a taste for fine fabrics, which led her to create the Weaves series. The Weaves series has interwoven threads and interwoven colours with a lot of detail and may take more than a month to finish. “I love the simplicity and I love fabrics. Once you get introduced to high fashion and fabrics, it becomes difficult to work with anything else. You’re hooked and you look closer at the detail,” Pinder said. “I love the simplicity and how complicated it is.”

Banking on It BY VICTORIA SCOTT

ABODE guest writer Victoria Scott goes on a tour of Qatar’s brand new stem cell storage facility. at least, not that I know of. Perhaps there’s more Sir Richard Branson’s pet project, Virgin Galactic, than meets the eye? This thought makes me chuckle, but luckily the security guard is oblivious. He takes me to the Virgin Health Bank, whose occupants are most definitely human. Virgin Health Bank (VHB) began in the U.K. in 2007, and launched in Doha in March 2009. Its mission is to provide transplant quality cord blood banking to all of Qatar’s residents, locals and expats alike. Up until now, they have been flying all samples collected in Qatar to the U.K. for storage, but this is about to change. I’m here to view their state-of-the-art new Doha storage facility, which is just about to open in the Science and Technology Park. It’s my only chance to see it; once it’s up and running, it will be a sterile environment and only laboratory workers will be allowed inside.

A

rriving at the Doha Science and Technology Park, I feel like I’m entering Area 51. The desert sand blasts me as I wind down my car window to hand over my ID. I imagine that I’m about to be handed a protective suit and ushered into a hangar to view a neon-lit distant relative from beyond the Milky Way. It’s just that sort of place. It’s eerily quiet, with hardly any other vehicles on the dual carriageway that heads towards the giant complex ahead. The buildings are all criss-crossed steel and enormous fluted sun-shades several stories high. I’m directed to the visitor parking, which resembles a metallic Armadillo, and I walk out past jumping jets of water to a bank of glass lifts with only a solitary security guard in sight. I wonder if I’ve come to the right place. After all, this is Doha, not Nevada. And I’m here to meet Andrew Glen, the commercial director of Virgin Health Bank. Their work could be described as futuristic, but certainly not extra-terrestrial – or

82 ABODE JUNE 2011

I’m greeted by Glen, who’s going to be my guide. He leads me through the entrance hall, past a wall speckled with a myriad of monitors, and into a small corridor lined with coat hooks and shoe racks. It also turns out to be an air-lock. We emerge from there into a bright laboratory with windows looking out onto the real world, which had begun to feel a long way away. “This is where the samples come first,” Glen explained. “Once we’ve given them all a unique bar code, they pass through another air lock into the next room. Beyond here, all the air is filtered and monitored so it’s as clean as it can possibly be.” We walk into this room, and I take a deep breath, conscious of what he’s just told me about the air. I’m surrounded by white, box-like machines which filter the cord blood and help to preserve it. Then we move into the next room, where I’m greeted by three huge gleaming storage tanks. Glen explained that each sample is placed in an aluminium protective box and then lowered into the first one - the smallest – to begin to cool down. Eventually, each sample will be stored in one of the two bigger tanks at -196°C, for up to 20 years. Glen lifts the lid off one of these for me and liquid nitrogen pours out of the top. He

instructs me to waft this away, and I can just glimpse the storage racks through the mist. All of this requires power, and Glen assures me they’re not short of it. “We use the DSTP’s power source, which, of course, has a back-up,” he explained. “But we also have our own generator, too. And if that fails, each tank has its own batteries and they can keep going for several days on their own. So we think we’re covered!” Glen said, laughing. Glen won’t tell me how many customers they have in Qatar at the moment, except that it’s “in the hundreds,” and he’s pleased to report that there’s been a real growth in the number of enquiries from Arab families. There’s certainly a need for the service they provide. The company was invited to come to Qatar by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. “She invited us because there’s a severe shortage of stem cells and donors in this region, and a real clinical need,” Glen said. “The numbers are startling. There are over 17.5 million registered bone marrow donors and donated cord blood units on the worldwide register, but only 45 in the gulf. And none in Qatar.”

VHB has built up relationships with all maternity hospitals in Qatar, where trained doctors and nurses harvest a baby’s umbilical cord blood immediately after birth and package it up ready for

transportation to the storage facility. The sample will then be cryopreserved and made available to the baby and their family for 20 years. Each collection of cord blood can only be used once. Stem cells can be life savers. They are the body’s “master cells,” and are unique, as they can multiply and turn into other kinds of cells. They can currently be used to treat over 80 diseases, mainly blood disorders and blood cancers, like sickle cell anaemia and leukaemia (although in the case of the latter, a patient will need to use cells from another donor, not their own cord blood). There’s also more likelihood of a sibling match, should a transplant become necessary – with cord blood, there’s a 40 per cent chance of a child matching another in the same family, compared to 25 per cent using bone marrow.

paid for the facility. What, then, are desperately ill patients in Qatar to do if they haven’t the money or the opportunity to bank cord blood themselves? Glen is quick to reassure me. “We’ve been talking to the Supreme Council of Health about them establishing a public cord blood bank in Qatar, where people would donate units to be used for transplants within the community. We could help them manage the whole process, from raising awareness, to storage,” Glen said. “What we’ve built here is an operation that will transfer to supporting a public program. We think this is a real possibility, and soon.” • For more information, visit www.virginhealthbank.com.qa.

Anyone with any eye for the news knows that that’s not the end of the story. Glen acknowledges that there are many more possible uses for stem cells. “Around the world there are over 1250 clinical trials underway, looking at treatments for things like stroke, spinal injury, diabetes and muscular dystrophy,” Glen said. “A lot of those tests look promising – but we have to be careful not to promise something that isn’t guaranteed.” Each sample VHB holds is, of course, for the exclusive use of the families who’ve

TICK TOCK BY JAMES PATTERSON Horror novelist Stephen King once dismissed American author James Patterson’s bibliography as made up of dopey thrillers. Patterson’s reply was: “I am not a prose stylist. I’m a storyteller. Some don’t like what I do. Fortunately, there are millions who do!” And, rightly said! Millions adore this hugely successful thriller writer. And, for that very reason, his latest book Tick Tock is a much-anticipated read. The novel, co-written with Michael Ledwidge, is a continuation of the story of New York City Police Detective Michael Bennett who is grappling with domestic problems and trying to capture a viciously cold and calculative copycat serial killer who is making the city’s citizens cower in fear. And to twist the plot further, Michael finds himself torn between two beautiful women – the beautiful and intense Mary Catherine, his children’s nanny; and Emily Parker, the mysterious FBI agent who Michael has been attracted to in the past. Patterson maintains his staccato writing style and Ledwidge’s flair blends in effortlessly. Tick Tock is full of short, punchy chapters and abundant cliffhangers. Plus, there are dollops of humour! So, if you are in for some great asides and adlibs, with a generous measure of suspense, Tick Tock is just for you!

ACT LIKE A LADY, THINK LIKE MAN BY STEVE HARVEY How seriously would you take advice and tips from a comedian on dating and love? Quite seriously … if you are reading Steve Harvey’s Act Like A Lady, Think Like Man, where the author partners with relationship expert Denene Millner to help women understand what they need to know about their men. Folksy and down-to-earth, Harvey uses his radio experience from hosting The Steve Harvey Morning Show to convey quite candidly on how to tackle men and not be played by them. A great story-teller, Harvey’s comical, almost bigbrother perspective, has readers in splits and empathizing with the mock dating situations described in the book! Verdict: Light reading and lots of good advice!

ENCHANTMENT: HOW TO WOO, INFLUENCE AND PERSUADE BY GUY KAWASAKI Advertisers are constantly striving for newer methods of marketing products and services. They want to influence consumers and create deeper relationships with them. In short, they want to ‘enchant’ their customers and, in his latest book Enchantment: How To Woo, Influence and Persuade, Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki tells readers how. A bible for startup entrepreneurs, Enchantment explains to businessfolk how to “delight” people by working with them and enlisting their own goals and desires. With short, punchy sections that almost read like blog posts, Kawasaki explains in very simple terms on how to wield the most influence in the digital age of emails, presentations, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn. Informative and concise, Kawasaki’s chapters end with anecdotes on techniques that can be used to draw in consumers. It may not be original, but it’s definitely effective!

The most important of all revolutions is a revolution in sentiments, manners and moral opinions. Leila Aboulela’s Lyrics Alley, set in the 1950s pre-independence Sudan, is a poetic tribute to artists and talks in parallel about two revolutions: one very political by nature and the other sentimental. The British rule is coming to an end and Sudan is torn between cultural modernization and its traditional past. The powerful and rich Abduzeid family faces its own demons when their smart and handsome family heir Nur suffers a near-fatal accident that leaves him quadriplegic, subsequently breaking off his engagement with the beautiful Soraya, a tragedy that almost kills him. How this large, yet intricately linked, family copes with this trauma and, most importantly, how Nur rises from this misfortune to become “the poet of love and hope” makes the plot for this engaging and intelligent drama. Aptly titled, Aboulela’s novel is a lyrical journey of the poet Nur through the dark alleys of depression, shame and guilt to find peace and everlasting love that comes with a revolutionizing change in the hearts of the people he loves.

Lifestyle Drive in Munich, Germany – Kitzbuehel. Our lavish Porsche trip set off from the Sofitel Hotel in Munich. During the early hours of the morning, we all gathered for a briefing by the Porsche Travel Club tour guides. We had a comprehensive introduction to these incredible machines and a few bends to get familiar with the cars. Finally we were all ready to step into the mid-mounted engine Porsche models and drive away into the wilderness of Germany and Austria’s countryside. The exterior, as well as the interior of all models, was simply breathtaking. Looking the nine cars drive away from the entrance of the hotel was like looking a parade of pure luxury in an array of different colours. The sensation of driving in a Porsche convoy through the streets of Munich heading to the winding country roads of Lake Chiemsee is pure bliss. There is a feeling of flying over the pavement, as the car drives so well and in such a perfect speed that is hard to believe the wheels are actually touching the concrete. The drive to Lake Chiemsee is built to leave a lasting impression; it is a drive of unadulterated pleasure through a charming

countryside. But the best was yet to come. After a small stop for lunch, we continued our incredible drive through the demanding roads of the foothills of the Alps. We were certainly impressed, particularly by the extraordinary agility of the cars as we made our way through the splendid scenery. We were absolutely drawn in by the surroundings. The roads provided us with all the essential elements to discover the car’s three main strengths: precision, driving dynamics and performance. After an exhilarating afternoon, as the evening was drawing in, it was time to check in the hotel, walk around the beautiful Kitzbuehel Village in Austria and have a well-deserved dinner of fresh specialties and selected dishes from the region. The next day we were ready for more action, but nothing could have prepared us for what we were about to see and the roads we were going to drive through. We started driving through the Zillertal Valley in Austria an almost impenetrable region. The constant switching between deep valleys, high mountain paths, narrowed curves and natural lakes gave us even more chances to reaffirm the astonishing visceral performance of the Porsches. Discovering these magnificent natural settings and opulent surroundings behind the wheel of a Porsche is just indescribable. Nothing can outdo such a powerful feeling. The journey is undoubtedly worth it in every aspect. The stretches of the roads against the backdrops of the region’s peaks appear to have been created especially for a Porsche. Unfortunately, it was time to go back to Munich, as the trip was coming to an end. The experience is so addictive that the only thing left to ask yourself is: “When can I do this again?” It was truly the ultimate expression of freedom. The untamed animals During our exceptional journey we had the luck to drive all six mid-mounted engine vehicles from the standard Boxster and Cayman range. They are specimens that represent force and style. Boxster and Boxster S The entry-level Porsche Boxster has 255 horsepower and top speed of 263 km/h.

It’s followed closely by the 310 horsepower strong Boxster S, which can go from 0 to 100 km/h in only five seconds if equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and Launch Control. No matter the colour, both models are exceedingly attractive and monsters on the road. The Boxster models are truly sports cars, featuring enlarged air intakes in a geometric arrangement for increased cooling power, striking spoiler lips and sporty 17-inch (Boxster) or 18-inch (Boxster S) wheels with an open fivespoke design that allows a clear view of the brake system. The Boxster Spyder The Boxster Spyder is another popular model of the Boxsters series improving the figures of the engine by a further 10 horsepower for a total power output of 320 horsepower. The Spyder has a midengine arrangement with a distinctive lightweight construction, mind-blowing agility and precise handling. It is a true example of the extraordinary levels the Porsche’s designers can reach. Porsche Cayman The Cayman models are equally impressive and they stand as the second mid-engine range offered by the Porsche manufacturer in Stuttgart, Germany. Cayman features a 265 horsepower strong engine with a top speed of 265 km/h, its counterpart, the Cayman S, produces 320 horsepower and can accelerate to 277 km/h.

of 55 kg, the Cayman R has a power output of 330 horsepower (10 horsepower more than the standard Cayman S) and reaches 282 km/h, making the Cayman a supercar. The look and feel of the car is the same as an exceptional race car, thanks to the 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels, sports bucket seats, a 20 mm lowered body and a retuned sports suspension. Equipped with the sevenspeed PDK the acceleration time goes from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.9 seconds. All Boxster and Cayman models really express what Porsche is all about and show why the vehicles remain as some of the most premium sports cars in the world. The cars provide their drivers the ultimate driving experience. • The tours offered can literally take you to every corner of Germany and other places in Europe. There are also tours offered to Tuscany, Andalucía, Morocco and the island of Mallorca. The Porsche Cayman models have an extraordinary interaction of convex and concave curves making the cars a distinctive and beautiful sporty vehicle. The Cayman features an extra-large outside air intakes in the front, dynamically following lines on the sides and a long wheelbase, accentuating the dynamic looks of these sharks of the road. The Cayman R is Porsche’s latest masterpiece in the mid-engine model range. Due to its purposeful mid-engine layout combined with a reduction in weight

The Power of the

Nissan GT-R BY JORGE GRANDA PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO

Very few cars in the world have the force and agility of a Nissan. ABODE attended the 2011 VVIP Nissan GT-R event to understand why Nissan is becoming one of the most unique sports cars in the world. We also spoke with famous race driver Jamie Campbell-Walter to find out how he got his start in racing.

S

umo power GT, one of the world’s top GT1 racing teams, made a stop in Qatar for a very special demonstration and testing day at the famous Losail International Racing circuit. During the VIP event Nissan racing drivers Michael Krumm, Lucas Luhr, Peter Dumbreck and Jamie Campbell-Walter unveiled the power of the 2011 VVIP Nissan GT-R. All drivers pushed the pedal to its very limit throughout the entire circuit before inviting their guests to do the same. The Nissan GT-R race car is one of the only five cars of its kind in the world. The power and force of the car is absolutely incredible, reaching an unrivalled speed of 60 miles per hour in only 2.9 seconds. “As one of the most iconic race cars of our time, the Nissan GT-R has a racing pedigree dating back four decades,” said Hisham Almana, chairman of the S.H. Almana Co. “The name Nissan GT-R alone commands respect. To be able to bring the Sumo Power GT team to Doha to show the power of these legendary cars is a great honour for us, and we at S.H. Almana are very proud

to be able to share this event with our most valued guests and clients.” The supremacy of the Nissan GT-R is such that the car has already outperformed cars that cost twice as much. It has been labelled as “the most potent performance vehicle to come out of Japan.” The Nissan GT-R has a 3.8 litre twin turbo-charged engine and a raised horsepower that goes from 485 to 530 bhp. The car is much faster, sharper and more refined than ever before. “This new edition has great resonance with Qatar’s elite circle and sport car enthusiasts alike,” Almana said. “And we are very excited to offer the opportunity to our clients to pre-order and customize this incredible sport vehicle.” During the event, ABODE spoke with famous Sumo Power GT race driver Jamie Campbell-Walters to get a better understanding of the power of the car and a glimpse of his life as a world-class race driver. Campbell-Walters was born in Oban, Scotland in December 1972. Among his many achievements, he won the Fia GT Championship in 2000.

entire globe and drive cars on the most amazing tracks. The preparations before an event like this or a race are not as glamorous though. You get to spend a lot of time with mechanics and it can get really hot in the garage. But once you get on the track, everything is just terrific. ABODE: For how long do you stay away from home each year? JCW: All in all, I get to spend around four months outside London. It is difficult sometimes, as I have to leave my wife and children behind, but I guess there is no such thing as the perfect job. But I really enjoy promoting and testing the cars. This is my life. ABODE: Apart from driving for the Sumo Power GT, do you have any other interests in life? JCW: There is something else I do for a living. I buy normal houses that have the potential to become great properties. I rebuilt and redesign them and then I sell them. It is quite a popular practice in the U.K. ABODE: Do you practice any other sports? JCW: I like running. Just before coming here I ran in the London Marathon. I didn’t win or get close to it, but it was an incredible experience. I also play tennis, swim and play football with friends. I also enjoy squash and snow skiing. ABODE: Does you have a specific health regimes?

ABODE: What sets the Nissan GT-R apart from any other sports car in the market? JCW: There are amazing sports cars right now in the market. It is true that Ferrari and Porsche are incredible cars, but the Nissan’s sports cars perform just as well and they cost [half the price]. The brakes are remarkable and the car simply handles itself very well. In my opinion, it is really one of the best sports cars in the world. I am a proud owner of a Nissan.

JCW: If you are asking if I look after myself, yes I do. I had a pretty bad accident a few years ago. Since then, every time before I race I have a massage. I use moisturizer every day, as I believe it is very important not to let yourself go. I take good care of my teeth and buy nice clothes. I do not buy anything really trendy because I am more of an English gentleman, but I do enjoy buying nice clothes. A good pair of jeans and a t-shirt is more than enough for me. •

ABODE: Tells us how you started your career as a professional race driver. JCW: I joined the army when I was 18 years old. At the age of 21, I finished my obligations with the army. I wasn’t sure what would be my next step. At that time, my girlfriend gave me a present that would change my entire life, a ticket to drive a race car for one afternoon. So I drove my first race car and I immediately fell in love with the sport. I just felt I had found my passion in life. ABODE: What is it so appealing about driving a race car for a living? JCW: It is a fantastic career. You get to travel around the

Your June Stars... BY MILINA

The June 1 Solar Eclipse In Gemini represents a special opportunity to break old patterns and make major changes in our lives. On June 4, Jupiter moves into Taurus: a good time for expansion and success in earthly matters. How are these influences affecting you?

Aries (March 21th-April 20th)

»With the planet Uranus transiting through your sign, you may feel a bit impatient and restless. You are probably in the process of reinventing yourself: a new job or residence? Be yourself and try to see the positive. Opportunities to meet new people who could become important to you. Seek balance.

Taurus (April 21th-May 20th)

»From June 4, Jupiter will be in your sign. This is a time in which you can expand. You will experience success on many levels and have opportunities to start new projects. Good for romance but be careful of falling in love with someone who is already committed. Do regular exercise and watch your waistline!

Gemini (May 21th-June 20th)

»New ideas and offers will come your way. Multi-tasking is easy for you. Networking and friendship are important. If you have children, you will feel proud of them now. You have charisma: June is a good period for romantic relationships and love. Try to relax: it is important for your nervous system.

Cancer (June 21th-July 20th)

»Saturn, Uranus and Pluto are all affecting Cancerians. Jupiter moves into Taurus after June 4 in a harmonious aspect. Things are unpredictable. Try to be modest and ask questions. This month will be the start of a new stage in your life. Friends and relatives may be very helpful. Learn to deal with stress. Take time to meditate and do regular exercise.

Leo (July 21th-August 22th)

»You are very popular now and people feel attracted to you. Things are looking up. Exciting new opportunities. You are willing to work hard for success. Make sure you can trust the people who work for you and those you are in a relationship with. Don’t be too confident and avoid confrontations. You are radiating good health, but watch your diet. A good time for travel.

Virgo (August 23th-Sept 22th)

»Jupiter in Taurus and Pluto in Capricorn will both form positive aspects to Virgo people. This is a time of new beginnings. Your good sense of organization could mean a better income. Pay your bills. You are a good analyst and can make solid long-term investments and decisions now.

Libra (Sept 23th-Oct 22th)

»The sign of beauty and style. A period of great transformation. Your biggest talents are relationships with other people and networking. You may need to compromise and sometimes even let go. Don’t worry too much about the future. Watch you diet and do regular exercise (maybe some yoga?).

Scorpio (Oct 23th-Nov 21th)

»Harmonious aspects from Uranus and Pluto. Opportunities to change. You seem to be gaining power and influence. A good partnership where there is trust and willingness to work together is beneficial. Watch your weight. You have a tendency to indulge too much in food and drink at this time.

Sagittarius (Nov 22th-Dec 21th)

»Opportunities for growth in work and finances. You have a friendly spirit that makes people like you. Learn new technological skills and programs. Teaching or training others is something you are good at. Your magnetism is strong. You are a good story-teller and have a sense of humour. You like to travel to exciting places, but you need to slow down and get focused.

Capricorn (Dec 22th-Jan 19th)

»Pluto will be in your sign until 2023. It has an empowering effect. Saturn and Uranus suggest sudden changes of plans. They require you to be adaptable to different circumstances. Jupiter will bring opportunities for growth and success. Trust your intuition. Get rid of clutter. A change in direction is possible. Back up your files. Be careful with money and avoid confrontations. Balance work with other activities to prevent burn-out.

Aquarius (Jan 20th-Feb 18th)

»Neptune will be retrograding into Aquarius for the last time this month. It implies a greater degree of realism. More freedom and inspiration to do what you want. New technology and the media play an important part. Use good judgment and know your limits. Be sensible and disciplined. You enjoy popularity right now. Friendships are very important, as are family relationships. A good time for romance and love. Exercise!

Pisces

(Feb 19th-March 20th)

»Uranus has moved out of Pisces. Life becomes a little bit more normal now. There are favourable opportunities for work and social life. You show greater interest in money matters, but beware of a volatile financial situation. Take good advice. Power-play among others at work. Friendships are important. Find inner peace and avoid over-excitement.
