IN THIS ISSUE.. Reinvention is the name of the game they say, and publishing is no exception. It helps to fine-tune expectations from both sides of the table. With that in mind, allow me to welcome you all to the brand-new ABODE. While some of the regular content will stay the same, we have beefed up our interiors section, re-introduced the gardening pages, included some elegant and upscale properties in Doha, tweaked a couple of section headers and whipped up a whole new feel to the magazine. We also have added how-to tips in the magazine for every section, including interiors, gardening and party tips. Another thing we want to focus on is our male audience. Turn the pages and have a peek at The MANual, which includes great tips for men. In this issue, The MANual is about fabulous accessories and new skin care products to try out.

At the end of the day, ABODE is all about people; people who live in the city, as well as some who revisit Doha to see the transformation it has been through. The GM of W Doha shares his insights on how business is done here in Qatar. Returning expat wife and painter Mary Jose, whose husband used to work for Shell in Qatar 25 years ago, takes us through a journey of what Qatar was like 25 years ago. This month, the ABODE staff had the chance to drive one of the most amazing cars, the Ferrari California. With the Ferrari guarantee, great driving is always a sure thing. Try it out yourself! As always, we are interested in what you have to say. Let us know how you feel about ABODE, a magazine that has been around you for the past eight years as a trusted companion, privy to all your needs and demands regarding your HOME, your LOOK, your CAR, the FOOD you love or the BOOK you are excited to read. Last, but not least, March 2011 gave us yet another occasion to understand that human life and daily efforts are dwarfed by the forces of nature. The series of earthquakes in Japan and the resulting tsunami killed and destroyed the lives of many. While the survivors will need strength to rebuild from scratch not only their lives but their spirit as well, ABODE joins the rest of the world in remembering the departed.

A JOURNEY IN FLASH BACK BY SYDNEE BRYANT PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO
Art can tell stories of the past and show glimpses of the ways things used to be. For Mary Jose, her art represents her journey through life as an international expat wife. The artist, who lived in Qatar for several years, returned to Doha 25 years after leaving the country to reminisce about what life was like back then, the landscapes and light that inspired her and the artwork that captured a country’s essence.
Mary Jose and Chris Jose

magine a different Qatar. Picture Doha with no malls, skyscrapers or hotels. Envision Qatar without Education City or The Pearl.
This is the Qatar Chris and Mary Jose lived in 25 years ago. “It’s just a totally different place,” Mary said, as we sat having lunch at the Sheraton, one of the few places that did exist in Qatar in the 1980s, when Mary and Chris first moved to the country. The couple returned to Qatar for a visit last month, 25 years after they left the country in 1986. Most of what they knew from then is gone or replaced. But parts of that old Qatar remain. “Here and there, I can see little bits of what I remember,” Mary said.

But things were certainly different then. Qatar University had just opened. There were no other universities, no Education City. The beginning of the Corniche was in place but not as it is today. Driving from the dhow harbour, you could see streets of shops right before Souq Waqif. There were no malls, no grocery stores and nowhere to shop but the outside shops and the souq. The souq, although changed with time, has a similar feel of 25 years ago. “It’s difficult to remember exactly what it was like. But it was similar in the sense that it was a maze of little alley ways and that it took awhile to get your bearings and find your way around,” Mary said. “It wasn’t there for tourists, because there wasn’t any. It was there for Qataris and anyone else who needed anything.”
“There are no hard figures available but there certainly less expats then. The population of Qatar was only about 300,000 and less than half of that was expats,” said Chris. People lived in clusters of houses, similar to today’s compounds, but without a wall around the entire section. Each villa had a wall around it, which enclosed a garden. “It was very comfortable, very spacious,’ Mary said. All the main residential housing was in villas or consisted of a few houses in a cluster. Chris and Mary lived much of their lives as international expats, moving around every two to three years for Chris’ work. They moved to Qatar in 1983 for Chris’ job with Shell. Many expat wives didn’t work at that time, unless they had particular qualifications, said Mary. She was already quite keen on painting by that time.

She started her watercolour paintings of landscapes during her time in Dubai. Moving to Qatar represented a chance to return to a life of painting the light and landscapes that only the Gulf can offer. She began exploring Qatar for inspiration. She would wander the little alleys of Souq Waqif. “I had to try to find as many different views as I could,” Mary said. She would use those unique views as inspiration for her paintings. So much of Qatar found its way into her watercolours. Her main subjects were the souq, the dhow harbour and the desert. Inspiration was everywhere. “The beautiful lines, shadows and curves of the dunes, as well as the sea and the beach, was all, I found, absolutely beautiful to paint,” Mary said. “What always makes a subject for me is light. It’s not what it actually is.
It’s not that I’m looking for something intrinsically pretty or beautiful; it’s just what light will do to different shapes. And there is plenty of [light] here.” Mary found herself spending most of her timing painting or teaching art at a clubhouse owned by Shell. She taught watercolour classes, usually to wives of other Shell employees. Mary studied Chinese brush painting from the master painter while she lived in Singapore. These lessons are what motivated her to be a painter. Once she left Singapore, she no longer had the materials to do Chinese brush painting. Mary began painting Western watercolours but also turned to oils six years ago. She did two main exhibitions in Doha during the 1980s. One was a shared exhibition at the Sheraton. Another was an
She took photographs of much of her work but not every piece. At a time when digital cameras didn’t exist, she took transparencies of a lot of her work. She would do pencil drawings in her sketchbook of the subjects she wanted to paint. She also took photographs, especially if something special caught her eye. Sometimes the light would touch something in a certain way and she would photograph it to catch the fleeting light before sketching it. Her paintings are a mirror into what life was like in Qatar 30 years ago, before the massive influx of money caused an explosion of infrastructure and business in Doha. Old Doha is a world that many of us here can’t imagine. Chris and Mary would travel to Al Wakra for overnight trips. They lived for their trips out of the city, where they could relax with friends and Mary could find new inspiration for paintings. They would always travel with friends and bring a

If you saw another vehicle, you were surprised, said Mary. You couldn’t get lost, because you were always between the city and the shore. But they still took certain precautions to avoid disaster. “You still took the desert quite seriously. You could quite easily get stuck and not be able to get your vehicle out again,” Mary said. The couple has lived in an impressive number of cities, including Singapore, Dubai, Jordan and Curasol. When they left Qatar, they didn’t know where they were going or what they were going to do. They decided to drive home, heading to Saudi Arabia and onwards to home. They ended up in Jordan, intermittently for the next year. That ended up being a great chance for Mary to exhibit her work at a gallery in Jordan. Chris and Mary are now settled in the countryside in France. From their renovated home, they can see the

mountains. Mary still paints, but focuses mainly on abstracts. “I didn’t set out to do abstracts, but they got bigger and bigger and became more abstract,” Mary said. The artist in her continues to find motivation for art during her travels. “I’m very inspired by the different sort of emotions the different colours have, both on their own and in combinations. Otherwise, I’m not sure where the inspiration comes from. But I’ve got a feeling that after all these different places we’ve been and all these different things we’ve seen and painting in all of [these places], that somehow all of this is
condensing this into the oil paintings, but I wouldn’t like to analyze it any further.” Their most recent trip to Qatar will likely trickle into Mary’s abstract artwork in the future. “I certainly won’t start doing figurative watercolours of the local scene but I will continue with abstract and probably mainly with oils, but I have the sort of feeling that something of the light of the desert, of the sort of shapes that you see around here with all of the skyscrapers, that some of that will leak into [my paintings],” Mary said. “I don’t know; I can’t predict it. I have to wait and see what happens.”

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IN QATAR BY SYDNEE BRYANT PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKHAIL QUIJANO
Qatar is rich with business opportunities, as the country continues to grow. But what makes doing business in Qatar different from other countries? We checked in with Safak Guvenc, general manager of the W Doha, to find out some of the ins and outs of running a successful business in Qatar. Safak Guvenc, general manager of the W Doha
ABODE: What is the most exciting part of doing business in Qatar? SG: Qatar presents everybody with fabulous business opportunities, owing to its rich gamut of cultures, its strong, growing economy and exciting future plans. ABODE: What are some of the challenges of doing business in Qatar? SG: I believe the only challenge, which I personally see as a great opportunity, is the load of international events, conferences and happenings that are choosing Qatar as destination. This does bring a lot of pressure and hard work in order to cater to needs and demands but it also drives great business. ABODE: What is the main difference between working in Qatar and other countries? SG: For the hospitality industry, it is really pretty similar across the globe; it is all about providing guests with a five-star, all-encompassing experience. Add to that a high level of luxury and stylish living in Qatar! ABODE: What are some of your favourite memories of your time working at the W Doha so far? SG: Definitely, the W Doha Grand Opening, which helped activate the world-renowned brand in the Middle East for the very first time. Additionally, we had the opportunity to welcome several international stars, such as Kevin Spacey and Kate Moss and other jet-set celebrities. And last, but certainly not least, we were very privileged to be part
of the corporate communications that supported the Qatar 2022 Bid and other high-level sports tournaments. ABODE: Why did you go into the hotel management business? SG: It is my passion for hospitality. I am a social gentleman and I love to meet people and this is a great opportunity to do so. ABODE: What has surprised you most about working in Qatar? SG: It is the exponential and gigantic growth year on year; the outstanding pipeline of construction and infrastructure plans that are worth billions of dollars, such as the new international airport, convention centers, museums and The Pearl-Qatar, among others. ABODE: You’ve achieved a fair bit of success at a young age. What are your secrets to success? SG: It all boils down to a lot of hard-work. The key is to have great interpersonal skills and to share success and credit with all the talented people we have at W Doha. ABODE: What do you hope to achieve during your time as GM of W Doha? SG: Turn W Doha into the best hotel in the country and the region! ABODE: If you weren’t working in the hospitality industry, what would you want to do for a living? SG: It would probably be investment banking! ABODE: What has been the best part of
working here? SG: The best part has been being part of Qatar. When I came here during the opening stages of the hotel (in 2007), when I looked at Qatar, really, it was hard to visualize what would be the future of Qatar. But today Qatar has proven they are investing in the right causes, that is, education, Qatar Foundation, sports, culture, museums, fashion and all of these things, I think they have a great value. It’s a great country to be a part of. When W Doha came here, I think we were able to change a little the classical way of doing things in the hotels. There are great hotels in Doha but I think the W Doha has been a great addition to those great hotels. There are more great hotels coming to Doha, which is great. I think competition greats demand. The more competition that comes here, the more people will be willing to visit Qatar, the more products that will come in. It’s been a very exciting journey for our company. We believe in Qatar. We will continue to invest in Qatar.

FIND WAYS TO A
CLUTTER-FREE HOME What is a tall order for some is habit for others. A low down on how to make your home neat and rid of clutter.
delayed action. What starts as a few pieces of mail each day, for example, quickly becomes an overwhelming pile if we don’t take the time to sort it and weed out the stuff we know we don’t need.
G
enerally speaking, the less stuff you have, the easier it is to get and stay organised. Of course, many of us find that things seem to accumulate in our lives almost effortlessly, and soon wind up as clutter to be dealt with. But the battle against unneeded stuff doesn’t need to be a losing one! These tips can help you keep clutter from creeping up on you. STAY CONSCIOUS Often, we gather things without really thinking about whether we need them, whether we have a use for them, or whether they’re truly appealing to us. This tends to be especially true of things that are free, are on sale, or seem to be great bargains. The next time you’re faced with the choice, ask yourself, “Do I need this? Do I have a specific use for it?” If you can’t answer “Yes” at least once, chances are you’re better off without the object in question.
PRACTICE “ONE IN, ONE OUT” When you do find something you truly want, need, or love, aim to think of it as a replacement for something you already have, and get rid of the latter. For example, each time you purchase a new pair of shoes, weed out an old pair. CREATE GUIDELINES ON “WHAT TO KEEP” One of the most challenging things about sorting through stuff is trying to decide what to keep and what to toss. Give yourself a leg up by taking the time to create some guidelines before you start sorting: decide how long you’ll keep papers and files, clothes, holiday decorations, toys and sports equipment, books, and so on. WHENEVER POSSIBLE, DO IT NOW Clutter, like many other types of messes (such as a sink full of days-old dirty dishes), is always at least partly due to
IDENTIFY & ACQUIRE STORAGE SPACE First of all, you need to go through each and every room in your house and take a note of the extra storage space needed therein ie the type as well as the extent of the additional storage space required. For instance, if you feel that there are too many books lying here and there in your room, getting a bookcase will help you do away with most of the clutter. EACH THING IN ITS PLACE One of the first lessons that you need to learn, if you want to maintain a clutter-free house, is that each and every thing should have a place and it should be kept there only. For instance, the shoes need to be kept in the shoe-rack (not lying on the floor of your room). So every time you use something, make sure to return it to its intended place. LEARN TO DISCARD If you want to maintain a home that has no traces of clutter, you will need to inculcate the habit of discarding. Throw away the items that do not seem to be of any use in the foreseeable future. If you haven’t used something for the past 2 years, it is unlikely that you will require it in the next 2 years as well.

GREAT IDEAS FOR GREAT CLOSETS BY NITYA SHUKLA
Here are some simple ways to help organise your closet. Ideas that don’t need a massive overhaul of the entire space. Simple to-do’s to help you get out of the mess in no time.
A
closet this good looking and this well organised is nothing short of the beautiful fairytale with a happy ending. So you already promised yourself a day of spring cleaning, organising, planning and designing your closet space no biggie. Here are simple way to get you started. SORT YOUR “STUFF” Take everything out, the clothes, the shoes, the bags and the scarves and the jewellery. What is that you need every day and what’s for occasions. Sort it, separate it all and throw anything that you haven’t worn in two years... (yes those jeans have to go.)
28 ABODE APRIL 2011
PLAN Store your most-used items in plain sight, less-used items below, and least-used items up high.
ARE YOU A FOLDER OR A HANGER? Do you prefer your clothes on a hanger or a folded away neatly? You can use coordinated hangers for a clean look that will care for your clothes and help you stay organised. INDIVIDUAL ITEMS ARE GREAT ADDITIONS Use boxes, cubbies, shelves, or a hanging organiser to sort shoes.
THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT, SHELVING WORKS WELL EITHER WAY Short hanging spaces is great for shirts or folded pants. Alternatively, long hanging space is great for things for dresses or overcoats and things that don’t require folding. Keep folded clothes or accessories neat with shelf dividers. DIRTY TALES Use stackable laundry baskets that you can easily carry to the washing machine. MAKE ROOM Whether it’s a walk-in or a reach-in closet, you can create more space by storing away out-of-season clothes in boxes, either high up in the closet or under in box bed.

Sheet Composting: There are two ways of doing it – creating your own compost pile or sheet composting. Amending the soil needs to be done all year round and not just during the planting season. The soil here tends to deplete the nutrients quickly and so this should be a continuous process. Sheet composting is a way to obtain the benefits of decayed organic material without building a composting pile.

lot of damage to plants. We can combat these problems to a certain extent. Unlike other places where spring and summer are the high activity seasons, in Doha, fall
HOW TO COMPOST?
We moved into JBK Compound in April 2007. There was nothing there except for four almost dried bougainvilleas, a sidra tree and a palm. I knew that nothing could be done till September so I used this period in planning and preparing my plot. So how did we go about it? We created our own inexpensive soil amendment through composting. The soil in Doha by nature is a mix of clay, lime and alkaline and the only way to improve it is through organic matter such as compost, peat and manure. Compost loosens clay soils and improves soil structure, texture, fertility, aeration and increases the soil’s waterholding capacity.
Composting involves spreading a thin layer of organic materials like leaves, garden debris, weeds, grass clippings, and vegetative food
s expatriates we all would love to have our own personal oasis of relaxation and solitude – a garden, the most valuable space in our home but are reluctant because we all wonder is it possible to grow anything in a desert? Yes it is. Gardening in the desert is not difficult, it’s just different. It is a cumbersome effort because the formula meant for other soils and climate cannot be applied here. We live in a dry desert with intensely hot summers and short cool winters with limited rains. The north-western winds can be quite strong and bitter and this alone can do a

for the process to accelerate. Due to the hot arid climate we have here, this process will be complete in 6 weeks. This compost can also be added to the soil mixture for potted plants.
REMEMBER The compost pile is not a garbage dump. Everything from the kitchen should not land up in that pile. Avoid cooked food, meat, bones, dairy products, diseased plants, plastics, faeces of dogs and cats. There is another simple liquid fertilizer that works wonders for the soil including potted plants. If you have an aquarium and when it is time for cleaning, don’t throw the water away. Feed it to the plants. They will definitely benefit from it because it is full of nutrients – nitrogen & phosphorus. The same goes with diluted fish emulsion. This can be done once in two weeks.
scraps over a garden area. In our quest of being neat and tidy, we throw away all the leaves, dead plants and branches lying around when this could be your best soil conditioner. Collect them shred and till them directly into the soil.
do its work. It will eventually decompose and break down and turn into humus, the rich, earthy stuff that gardeners called ‘Black Gold’. What is important is that the compost pile should be properly aerated, turned at regular intervals and kept moist
Gardening can be a joyful and successful experience here as long as you are willing to invest a little effort, planning, patience and time (on your knees!). No matter how much room you have, you can always create a masterpiece garden whether it is in your back yard, on a terrace or even your window. Esther John is the President of the Doha Garden Club.
GREENS & BROWNS For those who would like to create their own compost pile the question is what is the ratio to be followed? A compost pile consists of two basic groups - ‘greens’ and ‘browns’. In my opinion it should be a balance of the two. ‘Browns’ are so called because they are dry and contain carbon. It includes dry leaves, straws, and biodegradable materials like newspapers (not the glossy ones), recycled papers, egg boxes, tissue and napkins. ‘Greens’ contains nitrogen - it helps grow and reproduce more organisms to oxidize the carbon and they are generally wet. This will include vegetable/fruit scrapings and peels, tea bags and leaves, coffee, dried out egg shells; leaves and plant trimmings. Don’t make home composting more complicated than it seems to be because at the end of the day let nature

WITH A PULSE ON THE MARKET BY APARAJITA MUKHERJEE
The real estate market is on an upswing on the back of the FIFA Bid win. Khalifa Al Misnad, CEO, COREO gives us his take on the way the market will go in 2011.
Khalifa Al Misnad, CEO, COREO
K
nowledge mixed with a liberal dose of passion came to my mind when I met Khalifa Al Misnad, CEO, COREO. On a Thursday afternoon at his office, as we sip coffee and discuss the dwelling options that the city provides to its ever increasing population, Khalifa is very categorical on the market segmentation. The sign of someone who has the studied the real estate and property market top down. “The Doha market has luxury homes and apartments, and the normal bracket housing. What the market is doing right now, is assessing what it needs to do with the middle bracket housing needs. This, in fact, is what the Qatar market has learned from the Dubai crisis of 2009. Dubai went on a construction spree, without assessing whether there would be adequate demand for it or not.” Commenting on the growth prospects for the year, Khalifa is hopeful that, on the back of the World Cup Bid win by Qatar, the real estate market will see a steady, if not dramatic growth in interest. And the reason behind this is very clear. “People who work here now see a solid reason why they should invest in ownership,
rather than stay on lease. Working expatriates, which is a very significant chunk of the population in Qatar, are looking at an extended period of stay here, at least till the World Cup is over. “ “The very next day, after the Bid, we received a lot of web inquiries looking for property in the country. The interest has certainly grown and owners are more reluctant to drop prices since there is market confidence in prices moving up, in the short to medium term.” For many others, however, leasing is a predominant option since outright purchase is a matter of being able to afford 30 percent of the price of the property, as per Qatar Central Bank guidelines. “Only 70 percent is being financed by banks, though they are also providing personal loans for the rest of the money in cases where there is shortage of funds, it could mean a higher outgo.” Qatar, as a market, has been able to manage the balance between supply and demand in the housing market. “This year we see a stability in both supply and demand, which has meant that prices have become far more manageable.”
“The Doha market has luxury homes and apartments, and the normal bracket housing. What the market is doing right now, is assessing what it needs to do with the middle bracket housing needs. This, in fact, is what the Qatar market has learned from the Dubai crisis of 2009. Dubai went on a construction spree...” Defining supply, Khalifa says, “The cynosure of all eyes is The Pearl-Qatar and the West Bay area where you see the greatest concentration of construction. And this is likely to continue till the end of the World Cup.” Demand is from the working expatriates, the flow of which is only likely to increase as the tempo of the World Cup builds up. “People who move here will need a place to stay and Qatar is sound economically, politically and means a lot to the world outside, even apart from the energy bounty that it has.”

Food, like any other art, is subjective. It does not have rule-book guidelines and like any artist, Hendro Widjanarko, Executive Chef, Merwebhotel Central Doha has created his own set of rules. Drawing inspiration from his mother, he believes that food has to taste as natural as possible.
S
tylish, inviting, vibrant, comfortable yet sophisticated is how Executive Chef Hendro Widjanarko, Merwebhotel Central Doha describes M Lounge, the hip hang out joint at the Hotel. Food has never been so easy… this is what I derived from my tete a tete with Widjanarko. His inspiration is still his mum, who, he says, believed in packing healthy portions for his kids so that they ate well. True to her style, the burger that he served us was more than what we are used to savouring in one meal. Oozing cheese, the burger was cooked just right. “Garnishing is very important for me. We eat with the eye first as soon as the food is served to us… so the visual appeal has to be met by adequate garnishing.” A chef for the past 22 years, Widjanarko pursued his dream of going abroad when he graduated in kitchen management from Indonesia and hopped across to the US for his first job. And he has never looked back since then. “I believe in tasting the food before I serve and insist that my colleagues also do the same. It only gives a greater
confidence in serving the food to the clients.” Simple answer to a simple question, but one that shows his conviction in his own creation.

Hotel is their “food for energy” concept which means that their menu is drawn up on the basis of the ideal energy mix.
Tweaking the menu is the prerogative of the Executive Chef. “I do it every week. I have a menu calendar that I follow very broadly, but within that I take the liberty of introducing or taking away elements that I think will only add to the appeal of the place.”
“Food for me has to be healthy, it has to give the energy that we require to get on
So one glance at the menu reveals the bevy of dishes that are there… to suit guests of various types… the business traveler, the leisure traveler or a casual diner.
One hot favourite of Widjanarko is the date and caramel cake. “Dates are an integral part of the culture here. So I had to include that as part of the menu offering and many guests have told me that it is one thing to die for.”

liquid. Now put it all in a blender with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper to taste and blend to form an emulsion. For the couscous : Bring the fish/seafood stock to the boil, add in the ink of the cuttlefish and the seasoning, then add the couscous (if using the instant variety, add directly from the package, and use the amount of stock indicated in the instructions on the package). Stir gently till it is cooked and the moisture is absorbed, and then season with salt, pepper, and extra-virgin olive oil. For the fish : Season the two filets of red snapper with salt and pepper. Pre-heat a non-stick, heavy-bottomed pan, then add a little extra-virgin olive oil and place the filets, skin-side down until the skin is crispy (approximately two minutes). Turn and cook approximately another two minutes. Be careful not to overcook the fish, or it will lose its luscious juiciness! Composing the dish : Arrange the fish filets on one side of a plate, and use a cookie-cutter or mould to shape and neatly place the couscous on the other side of the plate. Warm the seafood in its emulsion and place around the fish, gently spooning the sauce over the seafood. Use your imagination to garnish this dish and bring out the tastes and colours – stalks of dried herbs, fresh herbs, aromatic olive oils, candied cherry tomato…just remember the dish has to be served very hot to taste best!

The MANual:
Stay Young Looking BY JORGE GRANDA
L
ong gone are the days when men only needed 10 minutes to get ready for work or a night out on the town. Transforming from Mr Sloppy to Mr Super cool dude was a matter of a quick shower, shave, a dash of aftershave, deodorant and a bit of brylcream on the hair. Male grooming these days is more complex and is probably on par with any female grooming regime. Men take a lot more pride on their external appearance than they used to. Looking good from head to toe has become essential for the modern and sophisticated man of the new millennium.
Our skin’s natural renewal process slows down as we get older, especially once we pass the age of 30. Taking care of your skin becomes a very important issue if you want to keep your good looks, slow down the aging process and eliminate the wrinkles. Scientist haven’t found a miraculous cure for staying young forever, but there is a lot you can do to hold back the years. For most men, following a strict skincare routine used to rank with taping an episode of Gossip Girl or America’s Next Top Model. But times have changed. Men have become aware of the benefit that comes along by taking care of their skin. Using the right type of products and
following a proper regime will help you fight time. Here is our recommendation for the best line of products in the market that will help your skin to stay fresh and young.
YOUR NEW REGIME Academie Scientifique de Beaute skincare experts have developed a cosmetic line for men, which targets problems concerning male skin aging. The line of products is offered at N.Men, the only spa in the country that offers services and products exclusively for men. We have laid out a treatment plan that consists of four simple steps and products for everyday use that will help you fight the aging process.
ACTIVE STIMULATING BALM FOR DEEP LINES Protecting your skin it’s not enough; you also have to work on looking younger and have a healthier face. This anti-wrinkle cream increases skin’s energetic metabolism and has regenerating properties. Use: Apply a small amount to the face and throat and massage gently (preferably in the evening).

CLEANSING AND NON-FOAMING GEL Start your routine by shaving and washing your face. This unique gel can be used for shaving, as well as a daily integral cleanser for the face. The foam helps the razor glide smoothly for a precise and close shave, while allowing bypassing imperfections. It also limits the painful feeling of tightness even on three days’ worth of stubble. As an integral cleanser, the product works superbly leaving your face dirt-free and feeling fresh. Use: Moisten the face with warm water to prepare the skin and hair. Apply the gel and use massaging movements. Shave or cleanse. Rinse with water.
ACTIVE EYE CONTOUR GEL SMOOTHING, ANTI-PUFFINESS Those dark circles below the eyes are a problem that can be prevented and improved. You don’t need to go through life with puffiness around your eyes. This gel’s smoothing and anti-puffiness protects the blood capillary network and reduces wrinkles and small lines. Use: Apply morning and evenings on a cleansed skin. Put small dabs of gel on the eye contours and make it penetrate with light tappings from the inner corner of the eye towards the outer corner.
ACTIVE MOISTURIZING AND MATIFYING BALM After a nice clean shave and cleansing, proceed with applying the balm, whose properties provide the skin with all the elements needed to protect and strengthen it. The balm protects your skin from the effects of free radicals due to pollution. The product will also help to repair and soothe your skin. Use: Apply the balm in the mornings and/or evenings. After shaving, apply a small amount to the face and throat and massage in gently.

THE STIRRUP COLLECTION
alph Lauren has always been associated with luxury, glamour and timelessness. The fashion brand continues this legacy by partnering with the renowned Swiss watchmakers Richemont to create three new collections of high-quality, fashionable watches. Each collection features new designs, quality material and iconic details sure to catch anyone’s eye. Using white gold, rose gold, platinum, stainless steel, each watch is as lovely as a bracelet but far more functional.
The most interesting and luxurious of the three collections, The Stirrup Collection is an equestrian-lover’s dream come true. These perfectly shaped, eye-catching timepieces are a tribute to the equestrian heritage of Ralph Lauren Polo. This collection has a variety of pieces to fit everyone’s fancy. Those who aren’t afraid of a little sparkle will swoon for the Ralph Lauren Stirrup Diamond Link timepiece. The effect of the full-pave diamond and white gold chain link bracelet twisted carefully around the white gold and fullpave-diamond case is nothing short of remarkable. The face of the watch itself is simple, with Roman Numerals and minutes marking away every tick of time. The men’s watches in this collection have no diamonds, but feature classic leather straps and sleek details. The Ralph Lauren Large Stirrup watch plays with contrast, with a black dial and off-white Roman numerals. This stainless steel watch has three distinct circles on its face, all with different measures of telling time, making it the perfect watch for athletes.
THE SPORTING COLLECTION
This collection focuses on Ralph Lauren’s passion for quality automobiles. The Ralph Lauren Sporting Watch has a wood dial honouring the interior of Lauren’s 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe. This is the only watch in the collection that has numbers adorning the face of the timepiece instead of Roman Numerals, hinting at traces of a speedometer. The Ralph Lauren Chronograph Black Ceramic Watch is the first watch in the collection to use ceramic zirconia, a durable, high-tech material that is doesn’t sacrifice comfort for style. The Ralph Lauren Sporting Chronograph makes use of the 20th century’s most popular material – stainless steel. This watch features the traditional practice of hand-guided guilloche - the process of creating an ornamental border consisting of a pattern of two or more interwoven wavy lines. From far away, it looks fairly simply; up close, the effect is

THE SLIM CLASSIQUE COLLECTION
The Ralph Lauren Slim Classique Collection features simple but sophisticated timepieces with modern features and sleek proportions. The new square design, inspired by Art Deco, is elegant and restrained, never gauche. As always, this collection references the hand-guided guilloche art form. With minimal distractions on the face of the watch and a black alligator band, these watches were made for everyday use but are nice enough to be worn on more formal occasions. This watch focuses on geometric details, from the concentric squares and linear dial markings to the precise shape of the case. This collection evokes old-school charm, making it the perfect watch for those who want a stylish timepiece that doesn’t compete with their ensemble.

The Dukan Diet Review:
A High Protein Diet Plan The Dukan Diet craze is causing such as stir in both France and England ABODE decided to investigate what all the rumors are about. Is it another fad? Or can millions of French people be wrong? BY MOONA MASRI-WHITICE

reated by French neurologist Dr Pierre Dukan, the best-selling diet book that has already sold out in Villagios Virgin Megastore, claims to have helped French men and women lose weight for a decade now, and the diet has developed a cult like following with devotees such as (allegedly) Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Giselle

Bundchen and soon-to-be royal Kate Middleton and her mother Carole. The New York Times reported earlier this week that Dukan’s diet book has sold 3.5 million copies in France and will soon cross the pond to America. However, the Dukan Diet is getting a lot of criticism for being just another high-
protein low-carb fad diet aka Atkins that provides no variety, less nutrients and less fat than needed in a balanced diet. Katheen Zelman, WebMD nutrition expert reviews the diet online and states, “There is no question this very restrictive diet will lead to weight loss, if you can actually follow it, but, the elimination of healthy
LIFESTYLE
food groups, and the unpleasant side effects, makes an unlikely choice for the long haul.” All this said, Katheen writes the following regarding the four phases of the weight loss plan. “There’s no weighing foods or counting calories. You eat as much as you want, at any time of day - as long as what you’re eating is lean protein, at least initially. In fact, protein is the centerpiece in all four phases, along with oat bran, lots of water, and a 20-minute daily walk. Vegetables are allowed in the second stage, followed by small amounts of fruit and whole grains.” In theory, this diet plan works by promoting rapid weight loss in Phase one by consuming a proteinonly diet for anywhere between one to ten days. Dukan advises that those who follow the diet can expect to at rate of seven pounds in the first five days.
The diet has developed a cult like following with devotees such as (allegedly) Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Giselle Bundchen and soon-to-be royal Kate Middleton and her mother Carole. Phase two, allow you to add non-starchy vegetables and this phase could last for months, depending on how much weight you need to lose. Dukan recommends sticking with this eating pattern until the desired goal weight has been achieved, dropping approximately two pounds per week. Phase three is the most critical phase of all. This is where you have to learn to maintain your weight so that you don’t gain everything back by making adjustments to both your life style and your eating habits. The book advises that the trick is to stay in this phase for every one pounds lost to trigger changes and not regain the weight lost.
health
Diet Plan Phase 1
The “Attack” phase, is quite simple: Eat all you want of lean protein, along with 1.5 tablespoons of oat bran and 1.5 litres of water daily. That’s it. Dieters can choose from 72 lean or low-fat meats, fish, poultry, eggs, soy.”
Phase 2 The “Cruise” phase, which allows unlimited amounts of 28 non-starchy vegetables every other day along with a core diet of unlimited lean/low-fat protein and two tablespoons of oat bran.
Phase 3 “Consolidation,” allows unlimited protein (including pork and lamb) and vegetables every day, along with one piece of low-sugar fruit, two slices of whole-grain bread, and one portion of hard cheese. Dieters can also have one to two servings of starchy foods and one to two “celebration” meals (in which you can eat whatever you want) per week during this phase.
Phase 4 “Stabilisation,” is the maintenance portion of the plan. The author promises you can eat whatever you like without regaining any weight if you follow his rules – one day a week, follow the same all-protein diet as in Phase 1; and eat three tablespoons of oat bran a day; and walk for 20 minutes daily and never take elevators or escalators.
Sugar-free gum, artificial sweeteners, vinegars, and spices are allowed on The Dukan Diet. The book encourages dieters to take a daily multivitamin with minerals.
Fad or not, The Dukan diet is currently the number one weight loss plan in both France and England attracting women of all shapes, sizes and ages actually helping them lose weight.
Phase four, is complete lifestyle change and is meant to be lifelong eating pattern change that will include a day of all protein once per week plus oat bran and water daily. If you are interested in giving this diet a try, you will find there is a diet book, cookbook and a website – www.dukandiet.co.uk. Virgin Megastore will have the books available in April. There is also a Dukan Diet version ipad and kindle you can download. Fad or not the Dukan Diet plan is currently the weight loss plan being used by the royals preparing for the big spring wedding.

TIRED OF FEELING SICK AND TIRED BY MAY-BRITT SEARTY
How sick do you need to feel before you are willing to do something about your health?
O
r have you accepted your headaches, exhaustion, pains and inflammation as normal? Here are just a few natural solutions to increase your energy and wellbeing.
to them regarding the new, fantastic “cures” available to help us feel better. Contradictory advice only moves us further away from our own intuitive skills of what we truly need.
In my experience as a natural health practitioner, I have found that one consistent relation between most conditions and symptoms has almost always been rooted in the quality of the food that my clients consume. Today, three ingredients – fat, sugar and salt – are so abundant that we are slowly losing our ability to appreciate the taste of more fundamental, yet absolutely essential, foods needed to nourish ourselves.
In order to achieve your desired level of success, you need a holistic approach. Your mind, body and spirit need to work together. Without this combination, changes will not happen. You, and only you, are responsible for your health and wellbeing. Take responsibility for yourself. Listen to your inner self, find your true passion and embrace it. You can do it!
Many of my patients are confused by the overload of information given
The key to living a healthier lifestyle? A willingness to depart from your comfort zone into a new and healthier way of living. You will need lots of dedication
THE TOP 5 STEPS
1
Skip any sugar, juices (except fresh pressed), cakes and candy. All this sugar makes you moody and anxious, and makes your body too acidic. You don’t need it.
2
Eat like a king in the morning, a prince in the afternoon and a pauper in the evening. Make sure you do not eat about four hours before you go to bed. Don’t eat carbohydrates, like rice, bread and pasta after 6 pm. If you can manage to do this, you will remain light and your body will be able to fall asleep easier.
3
If time allows you, take a run or brisk walk in the morning before breakfast. Otherwise, find time during the day for approximately half an hour of walking or another form of exercise. For optimal health, you need to walk 10,000 steps a day.
4
Make a collage with words and photos of what you want to do to make your health better. Cut out photos of people you admire. Find pictures of someone who represents the healthy ideal you would like to achieve. Hang this collage in your kitchen as a daily reminder.
5
The biggest step in achieving good health and wellness is really all about being proactive by choosing to be well and believe in yourself.

but you will also need to be willing to change. A positive attitude, a belief in yourself and hard work is enough to start making a change. Treat yourself as if you are learning to walk for the first time. You stand up, take a few steps, fall down and get up again, until you have mastered your new skill. The same thing happens when we are going through a big life change. You might fall down a few times in the beginning but if you continue to practice, your new habits will become a daily routine, allowing you to become the master of the new YOU. headaches. Chronic worriers experience disturbance in their appetite, lifestyle habits, relationships, sleep and job performance. Weight gain is yet another by product, since the body begins to store fat worry as a response to stress. Worriers experience a level on anxiety and even panic during waking hours. Often enough, worriers become so anxiety ridden that they begin to indulge in habits like overeating, eating junk food, cigarette smoking, or using alcohol and drugs, all of which have their own effects. Which is why, it is imperative, that you know how to combat this condition.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Take a moment, and say this to yourself ‘I won’t worry my life away.’ Now’s a good time to take that 10 minute breather from your exasperated, panicked, worried self and find a solution that works best for you.

DON’T WORRY BY NITYA SHUKLA
There is no ‘right’ amount of worry, eventually it becomes excessive and in no time, leads to overkill. We would all do well, get healthier and feel better about ourselves if we had the pleasure of listening to Bobby McFerrin’s famous song 24 hours a day, seven days a week wherever we went. We get the luxury instead, of shouldering an invisible parrot, who I like to call, the Worry Parrot. LESSER CAFFEINE The caffeine present in coffee and other such drinks increases the level of your stress hormone adrenaline. This triggers feelings of anxiety and cause feelings of tension and stress. Caffeine also blocks the effects of hormones like serotonin and melatonin. When this happens sleep becomes more difficult, which also makes you more prone to anxiety. When you decrease you caffeine intake, you experience higher level of calmness, more energy and better sleep.
GET UP, GET OUT Get some of the Doha breeze and sunlight! Regular vigorous activity such as walking and combination of daylight boost serotonin. It’s an instant energizer and uplifts your mood. Exercising, practicing yoga and meditation, sleeping and eating right can aid in increasing the serotonin level as well.

A short trip to the souq and you will find a mind boggling array of healthy alternatives. But today we’ll be looking at almond oil, camomile and rose petal leaves – which, between them I’ve found, can help with ills both mental and physical!. Now what you may ask shall I be doing with these? Lots I say. Instead of buying your expensive cellulite fighting moisturisers and age busting lotions and potions, give almond oil a try and, if you’re like me, I promise you, you will be very pleasantly surprised. HOW TO’S OF ALMOND OIL So you’ve got your almond oil at the ready, now what to do with it? Its fantastic on its own, lather it on as a daily ritual all over your body and watch time rewind or, as an extra pamper, lather it on all over the body, including your hair and soak in a lovely warm bath. Be carful getting in and out though, I’ve learnt through hard knocks, that oils on tiles can be a dangerous partnership. And now for the petals...for extra lushness use a handful of camomile flowers to calm and relax and really knock yourself out by adding a few drops of lavender oil. Going out on the town? I find a handful of rose petals in the bathwater makes me feel super special and the perfume from them is simply divine! Or, and stick with me here, grab an avocado and mash with almond oil to make the most incredible facemask…and a tasty one too.

Dancing Through Life By Tina Zuccarini
Life has a way of presenting itself so boldly. Every moment presents something new. Just when we think we’ve completed or mastered something, along comes something else taking us right out of our comfort zone and into change – another opportunity, another challenge, another learning… another something. Sometimes we resist change with every fiber of our being and sometimes we indulge in it, exaggerating it, turning it into a drama, making far more out of it than there truly is. Seldom do we abide in the present moment, experiencing it fully for what it simply is.

challenge, another learning… another something. Sometimes we resist change with every fiber of our being and sometimes we indulge in it, exaggerating it, turning it into a drama, making far more out of it than there truly is. Seldom do we abide in the present
moment, experiencing it fully for what it simply is. The culprit is the mind. Something will present itself here and now, but we can only perceive or recognise it with what we know, i.e., a recollection, a past experience or conditioning. The moment we recognise anything, the mind has a way of immediately creating a story about it, an illusion that has not even happened yet and almost instantaneously, we fabricate the future too and naturally, fear arises. With all this happening in our heads, is it surprising that we seldom, if ever, find ourselves entirely present? The consequences of what I have just explained are enormous. Whether we resist or indulge, we are either moving away or moving towards something. So the mind, i.e., a thought - always precedes an emotion. We move towards what we like (what we think makes us happy), and move away from what we dislike (what we perceive to be wrong/bad/unpleasant). Either way, there is always tension. If we get what we want, we are happy (temporarily) but then we quickly yearn for or long for something else. If we don’t get what we want or if life presents something we don’t want, we are unhappy. That tension is the cause of much illness, pain and suffering today. Therefore introducing something into our lives that can take us out of our heads and into the present moment is the surest way to release that tension and discover something we suppress for most of our lives – Joy! The Chance Encounter My sister and I were having breakfast one leisurely Sunday morning when she told me about a class she had visited. Her body started moving while she enthusiastically

So the mind, i.e., a thought - always precedes an emotion. shared her experience with me. There were hand movements and shoulder movements and I felt that same enthusiasm arise within me. It felt contagious and without much ado, I decided I would participate in a class the following Saturday. I arrived for the class feeling quite wrecked. I had been working long, demanding hours. My mind was far too busy. My body ached all over. That pain started almost several years ago – mysterious muscle and joint pain that baffled doctors. Some called it fibromyalgia but nobody knew for sure. Strangely, pain killers did not help. There were times when I would sit on my couch vibrating with pain for most of the day. Matter Of Feeling We were asked to face a mirror and just follow the guidance of our facilitator. There was no huge introduction, no expectation of the required performance level or desired outcome. There was a comfortable acceptance in the room. It did not even have to be articulated. We all felt it. The music started and with that, the facilitator started moving. Initially, I feared I would not be able to follow the choreography.
To my surprise, I realised that the movements felt very familiar. I knew them already. I moved like that all the time when I was little. A grin appeared on my face and, as I observed myself in the mirror, I saw for the first time in a long time, my body being authentic. ‘Is that my body moving?’ I thought and with that, I completely relaxed and allowed myself to be carried by the space all around me. That combination: acceptance, surrender, the music, the warm, radiant sun filtering into the room and that space all around me touched me in the most delightful way. Lightness fulfilled me and as tiny rivulets of pure joy pulsated throughout my body, I felt connected to something much bigger than myself. I became part of the Whole, integrating with the present moment, initially becoming it and then - being it. My body had been given permission to express itself freely – no should’s or shouldn’ts, no can or can’t, no right or wrong, no duality whatsoever – just the exquisite liberty to simply… be. The grin on my face stayed for hours after my first Nia class. The pain in my body left after my first Nia training. I was blessed to meet and train with a remarkable man, Ken Gilbert, someone who dances through life the body’s way – the real way. I intended to write about what Nia is, but got carried away with the feeling rather than the facts. In short, that’s exactly what Nia does. Three-Hour
Queen BY APARAJITA MUKHERJEE
So even on a weekday, I drove all the way down to West Bay, where dados is tucked away on the ground floor of Al Seal Residence. I had kept three hours out of my time to feel like a queen, middle of the month when copies start pouring in like everybody in town has just realised that the magazine needs to be folded and sent to press. Brave or foolish, I will be able to tell you later when the edition has finally gone to press, met the deadline and comes out as a finished product to be placed on the stands on April 1. For the time being, let me recount my 90 minutes at the Hammam room. Hammam is a traditional Arabic body treatment that includes a steam session, full-body scrub, body wrap and moisturising application at the very end.
R
unning around for most part of the day (with two full-time jobs – the workplace and the home), working six full days a week (one day to re-stock the refrigerator and re-fuel energy reserves), I was in no mood to let this pass by me. This what? Well an invite from dados to get a Hammam done (let me define that a wee bit later) and a onehour facial.
80 ABODE APRIL 2011
The room is inviting and laid out simply with a heated marble bed and a shower at the left hand side. Natasha, my therapist, greeted me with a warm smile, taking me along with what she would make me experience.
STEP 1: STEAM A 15-minute session at the steam room, following a hot shower, made my skin supple enough and let go of the stress
that accumulates with our normal routine. The steam adequately prepared the skin to absorb what is to follow – the body scrub – which works best on skin that is soft and heated up. And though the steam did clog my nose and eyes, I went ahead, decided as I was, to not let myself interfere with what was coming.
STEP 2: BODY SCRUB As I come out of the steam room, Natasha is all ready with the body scrub which she has made with rock salt mixed in frangipani oil. As she runs her fingers over me, she narrates in her lilting voice that this scrub will take away all the dead skins and leave me ready for the body wrap that is to follow. After the scrub, I shower anew for the scrub to wash away.
STEP 3: BODY WRAP The body wrap is a concoction of shea butter mixed in frangipani oil. When she applies the wrap on me, I sense that Natasha’s fingers feel different on my skin. And her answer is simple: “You have got rid of all the dead skin on you and now can feel how my fingers really are.” In my mind of course, I have dubbed her fingers as nimble as a ballet artist!
LIFESTYLE
spa
As she is done with applying the entire bowl of the mixture, she wraps me in a plastic sheet and covers my eyes with a dab of cotton. That was an indication that I had been un-relaxed as yet. The heat from under the bed started spreading and I felt cocooned on a comfortably heated wrap for the next slice of time… I had, by then, stopped counting the minutes. The same mix went for my scalp as well which got a tight massage and a heated towel wrap and off I dozed until woken up for a shower and the finale.
STEP 4: MOISTURISING Frangipani oil was generously dabbed on me and when I was about to raise a doubt on the oiliness of my skin, Natasha reminded me that with the skin prepared to seep in oil, it will absorb better than I can imagine. The bamboo massage comes next when a foot long closed piece of bamboo is gently rolled on my back to give the muscles the chance to “drink” in the oil that has just been applied.
STEP 5: SHIRODHARA Owing to its Arab roots, the Hammam takes one element straight out the pages of the Turkish Bath. An urn of warm to hot water with a nozzle below it is run over me to wash me out. It starts off with the forehead and graduates to my feet and leaves me relaxed and ready to grab the week ahead by the horns.
FACIAL: The cherry of my dados day I was pampered to a Nu skin treatment which brings in solutions from ageLOC science, targeting the ultimate source of ageing – the genes! The facial started with a round of cleansing and exfoliating, or cleaning the skin of all surface debris. The skin got a deeper exfoliation by using the ageLOC negatively charged gel and the galvanic spa II machine, which in conjunction with ageLOC is then used to penetrate the skin and have an anti-ageing effect. This was followed by a hydrating mask and a very relaxing massage.

I certainly have nothing against the new and avant-garde restaurants and bars that are popping up all over Houston, but there is something to be said for the tried and true. Smith and Wollensky’s Steakhouse (4007 Westheimer) certainly did not disappoint. I walked into the impressive bar, noted there were about twenty or so guys wearing $20 golf shirts with $100 logo’s. Except for the $100 logo, I fit right in. Actually, the place was warm and inviting, and I felt right at home. The T-bone was one of the best (and biggest) I’ve ever had, and nobody seemed to notice the lack of logo on my shirt.
C
hicago may be Sinatra’s kind of town, but Houston is my kind of town. No kidding – I really do like Houston.
Houston, America’s fourth largest city, is often the punch line of jokes and is frequently dismissed as a mere collection of oil refineries and corporate drones with big cowboy hats. While it is true that outfits like ConocoPhillips and Halliburton are in the driver’s seat of Houston’s economy, Houston’s culture and tourism have not been kicked to the curb. Like air rushing into a vacuum, oil money is flowing into once blighted urban areas, transforming former eyesores into trendy neighborhoods with postmodern architecture, thoroughly modern amenities, and classical Texas hospitality. Getting to Houston from Doha is a piece of cake. Our local airline has daily flights departing every morning. Just walk up to the counter, hook your thumb behind your oversized rodeo belt buckle, tip back the Stetson and say, “Howdy, partner. One ticket to Houston, make it business class, and put her on the gold card.” If you utter these magic words at least two hours before the jet’s 9 am. departure, there’s an excellent chance you’ll be having some genuine Texas barbeque for dinner.
DAY 1: AIRPORT 4.30 PM My flight to Houston touched down about 4:20 pm. and after a 15-minute ground tour of the George Bush
International Airport runway and taxiway system, we reached our gate on the D concourse. As any international traveler well knows, getting off the flight and out of the airport can be as hard as getting onto a flight. Houston is no exception. The elapsed time from leaving the airliner until stepping aboard the hotel shuttle was approximately one hour and after a 16-hour flight, I’m too tired to care - I’m just glad to be on the way to the hotel.
HOTEL 6.00 PM After a quick shower and change of clothes, I feel back to my old self. It’s about 3 am in Doha, but the sun is just starting to set here in Houston. The hotel is near the Galleria mall-the center of the shopping universe.
BEST BUY GALLERIA
DAY 2: RICE UNIVERSITY 7 AM The Rice University campus is in the city’s Museum District and adjacent to the Texas Medical Center. Some of the school’s early twentieth century architecture is very impressive - especially the original administration building. The University’s first president toured over one hundred Universities around the world to select the best practices, architecture, equipment, etc. on which to model the new University. Here’s an interesting tidbit I discovered: William M Rice, the university founder, a multi-millionaire Texas businessman and philanthropist was murdered in September of 1900. Agatha Christy could not have invented a better plot.
7.00 PM Time to tick off a few items on the “Don’t come home without it” list. I love electronic stores and this one has some great prices on DVD - they’re about one-third the price of comparable DVD’s in Doha. This particular Best Buy store is located about four blocks south of the Galleria mall, making it a bit of a walk, but easily doable.
BRUNCH
DINNER FOR ONE
But wait, here’s the surprise: if you want a more traditional Texas breakfast pancakes, waffles, grits, bacon & eggs, coffee, etc. - this is also the place. New York Bagels is a mom & pop, no frills diner with sassy waitresses, good food, and low prices. I could stay here all day.
9.00 PM In the mood for a really good steak? There is no shortage of steakhouses in Houston. I’ve always had good luck at the Ruth-Chris steakhouse, but tonight I’m checking out a wellestablished place that I’ve never visited.
9.30 AM If you enjoy a good breakfast, Houston’s New York Bagels (9724 Hillcroft Street) is worth a visit. All over Texas the places where a good Tex-Mex breakfast can be had are abundant, but even in New York, good bagels are hard to find. They are down right rare in Houston. New York Bagels is great - even by New York standards.

GALLERIA MALL 12.30 PM There are several more things to check-off of my shopping list. The Galleria is one of the biggest (4th largest in US) and most diverse malls you will find anywhere. It’s a bit “industrial” looking on the outside, but once inside, the soaring glass atriums provide plenty of natural lighting and an open-space feeling. With over 375 stores, if you can’t find it here, it probably doesn’t exist on planet Earth. Warning: these stores are not cheap and you can spend a lot of money quickly. But if you want the best, then The Galleria is definitely the place to go.
JOHNSON SPACE CENTER 3.00 PM If you are into space exploration and technology, then this is a must see. A Houston City Pass will save you some money if you plan to visit more than one of the affiliated attractions, such as the Houston Zoo, Downtown Aquarium, or one of several participating museums. If you really want a behind the scenes look at the Space Center, then go for the VIP level nine tour. This tour is limited to only 12 people per day, your spot must be reserved at least one day in advance, and everyone on
the tour must be 14 years or older – no exceptions. In keeping with the outer space theme, the price is astronomical as well; $90 per person, but lunch in the Astronaut’s Cafeteria is included – there’s no hype in that name – the real deal Astronauts eat there. If you just want to visit the gift shops (there are 2) then ask the security guard for a gift shop pass. It’s free and it’s good for 45 minutes. But you do have to ask for it - they don’t advertise that those passes are available.
TEXAS BBQ 7.30 PM This is dinner in Houston. If you’ve never had Texas barbeque, then sadly you’ve have not lived a full and meaningful life. OK - maybe it’s not quite that important, but it is good food, real good. There are a lot of excellent spots, but my favourite is Goode Company on Kirby Drive (5109 Kirby). No frills and served cafeteria style, the beef brisket may well be the best in Texas (and therefore the world). It simply melts in your mouth. And don’t miss the baked beans - they’re cooked with fresh apple pieces - and the potato salad. Finish it off with a slice of their wonderful pecan pie and you have had yourself a true Texas barbeque meal.
ARMADILLO PALACE 9.00 PM Right next door to Goode’s Texas Barbeque is the Armadillo Palace – the place to go for cold drinks and live Texas music. This is where Country & Western crashed into Rock and Roll and what staggered away from the wreck was called “Texas Music”. Some examples of the genre include ZZ Top, Willy Nelson, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The giant armadillo sculpture out front lets you know you’re at the right place.
HOTEL 2 AM I’ll catch an early evening flight back to Doha, but tonight I’ll sleep well and probably dream of flying in space, while listening to ZZ Top, and eating Texas BBQ out of a plastic tube. Houston, we are GO for launch.

FOR THE LOVE
OF BUTTONS BY APARAJITA MUKHERJEE PHOTOGRAPHY MIKHAIL QUIJANO
Safeya Mohammed Sharif Al Mushiri
WHAT STARTED IT ALL “I have had multiple hobbies, having navigated from painting, drawing, scrapbooking, knitting, crocheting and then stumbled upon this art of trinket making. I express myself with this.”
C
reativity follows no rule, no norms, no system. So when Safeya Mohammed Sharif Al Mushiri, jewellery maker, tries to recall how she developed this hobby and says, “Even as a kid of six or seven, I used to make my own little things with buttons. I have been in love with buttons and now I use them sometimes as charms on my trinkets”. She comes across as someone who is telling a story in which she herself is one piece of the puzzle. She even shows me one piece which has a tiny button as her signature. “For a while, I did think of using buttons as my signature, but now I feel it will be better to use my name instead… Safeya incidentally means ‘clean’. I like my name
As a beginner, Safeya bought her raw materials from the US while she was on vacation with her mother. “The US has stores which deal in crafts and I was fascinated by what I saw and had bought quite a bit which I still use. But if you ask me what really drives me to do a design, I will not be able to answer you since I largely go by what I find in my collection, even my own jewellery that has given way… and come up with something new as a creation.” and the connotation,” she says with a light dancing on her eyes. Safeya is young, she is still in the final year of the College of North Atlantic graduating in Health Sciences but she is a bundle of creative energy, very evident with one round of conversation with her. She uses her love for her craft certainly to uplift her mood and to let loose the forces of creativity that wells up in her. “But whenever I have done any design just to kill time, I have come up with pure disasters… So have now figured out that the best way to get the best out of my energy is to do designs only when I really find the calling to get going.”
Selling is by word-of-mouth and mainly to family and friends. Till now, Safeya uses her love of the craft as purely hobby. And the talk of business models and pricing structure are quite alien to her. “My parents and my husband decide the prices for me. For me the joy is in the creation, rather than trying to find the right price for selling it.” And tailor-making for her customers does not cross her mind either. “I am like a painter who paints for the love of it. As no one can order a painter around, I create to give myself the creative satisfaction… and people who buy have to from what I have.” A firm mind made up on what she feels happy with.

In A Class Of
His Own
In any art appreciation session, Al Braithwaite calls for a solitary niche, a heady mix of intensity with depth, whipped in out-of-the-world imagery. For someone who has made it a habit of seeping in influences from diversity, Braithwaite stands out in a class of his own. ABODE speaks to the artist to gauge what is it that makes him use everyday objects for art – cigarette butts to soft drink cans – you find it all there. With eye-riveting visuals, chalk out what you want from an artist of a gamut as wide as the horizon. 86 ABODE APRIL 2011
TELL US ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT INFLUENCES THAT HAVE SHAPED YOU AS AN ARTIST. Three unrelated incidents. Skip-diving in a residential neighbourhood in 2003 (in north Damascus), I chanced upon a discarded children’s drawing book that yielded some of the most memorable drawings I had ever seen. It’s one of my most treasured possessions. This opened my eyes to drawing. Second, narrowly avoiding death a month later in Abu Nouas, Baghdad. (In the space of 30 minutes I trod too close to an unexploded rocket in a collapsed house and had four jumpy American GIs screaming at me from behind a tank at a military base, at gunpoint.) This reinforced the feeling of being on borrowed time, and made me realise that, to many others it wasn’t normal disregarding the basics of personal safety to seek art out of the rubble of a warzone. Lastly, reading A to B and Back Again by Andy Warhol was huge. There are things that you just get, and they become part of you (it feels like they were always with you before you found them); they become part of your philosophical furniture. This is just one example, but it’s right there. He’s one of my favourites, the weakly Slovak immigrant-child who showed as well as anyone how to be marginal, sly and defensive, without compromising himself or his likeability. Those are three big influences, like avalanches in the Braithwaite landscape. The small ongoing forces though are arguably just as, if not more, influential than the sporadic goliaths in the long term - I like remembering that.

unexpectedness of a lot of my work brings on a sudden release of pressure, lightening the load of expectation. In the right mouth, these cocktails of pleasure and novelty can flourish into a carnival, designed to massage the subconscious imagination. Stirring pots, hunting treasure, hiding coins in the cheese… these are all standard fare in my work. Mine is a tricksy, evasive and conceptual humour more out of the book of say Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha or Shezad Dawood. The moist comedies of Gilbert and George, Jeff Koons and co can clearly be entertaining and revealing but I accept the view that they end up a bit insipid for offering criticism without much alternative. That’s why I stop short of the raucous wet-your-pants funny of standup and slapstick. Let’s say battering-ram routine - and keep more to the curious and the indeterminate.
WHAT INROADS ARE MIDDLE EASTERN ARTISTS MAKING IN THE WORLD OF CONTEMPORARY ART? Technically, politically, culturally, the Middle East is at the forefront of change. There’s a reason why the world is watching Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and so on. Likewise, the surge of inclusion and optimism and upheaval is huge across the region’s art world, with institutions opening, collections growing, global and western attention focusing, discourse multiplying, artists battling, opportunities for education and international inclusion developing. Admittedly the surge is
concentrated in certain areas, and not everywhere, but the feeling of possibility is spreading radically. I’m delighted to
My recent work is a response to global cultural conflict, that came as a result of my observations of how different cultures respond to the customs, beliefs, and behaviours of others. be a part of this drive, and this sense of new opportunity, both as an idealist and a contributor. Figures like Rose Issa, at the forefront of this drive, continue to be massively inspiring. There is an infectious strength and integrity to the scene. Blue-chip artists like Walid Raad, Shirin Neshat, YZ Kami, Abbas Kiarostami, Parviz Tanavoli, Kutlug Ataman, Mona Hatoum, Farhad Moshiri, Youssef Nabil, Kader Attia, and so on – there are many –have consolidated their international reputation already. And many lesser known brilliant talents are coming through the ranks to prominence. Artists like Ayman Baalbaki, Sharif Waked and Rokni Haerizadeh are fast in the ascendance, very impressive in their work. Perhaps the world is seeing the same kind of grit-in-the-oyster process that produced such pearls as Mark Rothko, Man Ray, or Frank Auerbach, all in some way byproducts of international disturbance

and the uncomfortable, necessary, adjustment to immigration. Edward Said voiced his displacement well when he said he felt ‘uncomfortably anomalous’ all through his early years, as a ‘Christian wrapped in a Muslim culture’ and as a ‘Palestinian going to school in Egypt, with an English first name, an American passport and no certain identity at all”. Displacement is a primary trait among most if not all so-called Middle Eastern artists.
YOUR LINE DRAWINGS HAVE INCORPORATED A LOT OF INFLUENCES FROM MYRIAD SOURCES. HOW DO YOU FILTER THESE INFLUENCES AND COME OUT WITH A SKETCH? It’s quite organic, the ingredients arrive and I wait for them. When something’s there, I keep it, and it becomes part of the syncretic mass. In the mirrors series (shown in Hall of Mirrors solo exhibition, XVA Gallery, Dubai 2010), the major references are wall-writing, (everywhere, but I tend to think of the Red Prison in Suleymania especially (Kurdish Iraq), children’s drawing (especially the Damascene paper drawings I mentioned earlier), teenage fandom, state propaganda, patriarchal portraiture, mass iconography (print, screen, murals, coins etc). The result is presented as a romantic detournement, full of a saturated sense of revolution mixed with ingenuity and expressive veneration. Destabilised by the unexpected style of the delivery, the freight of the portraits is then uneven to position.

A Touching
Account BY APARAJITA MUKHERJEE
The language style is poetic and full of imagery. “ ....We were going to sleep in the arms of death and seek shelter in our coffins.” in Detroit and securing a down payment for a bigger house in Southfield, buying a new car, and putting her drug-addicted brother in rehab, are as important a motivation for Zeina as the Fox News mantras about democracy and liberation she believes and repeats to herself. Zeina had applied to work with the FBI after 9/11, but never got the call. Initially, she seems to be at home in her Americanness and shows no anxieties about her hyphenated identity, unlike her mother who cried upon becoming a US citizen and asked her dead father to forgive her as the band played God Bless America. The author should’ve done more research to discover that it is not the American national anthem and avoid other mistakes. After passing security checks and health tests and training in Langley, VA, Zina is flown to Iraq and stationed in one of Saddam’s palaces in his hometown, Tikrit. Soon after arriving she calls her grandmother, Rahma, but is too ashamed to admit that she is working with the US and tells her that she is working with the UN, monitoring the US army. The rest of the story takes one through Zeina’s trials and tribulations on her Iraqi experience and how she feels when she eventually leaves to go back to the US.
THE STYLE The language style is poetic and full of imagery. Sample this: “… we were going to sleep in the arms of death and seek shelter in our coffins.” Or “The scenes of my childhood poured over me like hot rain, burning instead of cooling”. Kachachi is palatable when writing about Iraq. Her Iraqi characters are believable and distinct. Zeina’s poetic reminiscence of her childhood brings to life the grandmother’s character in tender language.
THE PLOT Inaam Kachachi relates in her novel The American Granddaughter (Al Hafida al Amerikiyya), shortlisted for the 2009 International Prize for Arabic Fiction, the story of a young American of Iraqi origin named Zeina who has left her country as an adolescent and returns to it as a translator with the US occupation forces. The novel has been translated into English and published by the Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation. Ironically, it is the American dream itself that compels Zeina to apply to go to Iraq and work as a translator for the US army. The prospect of moving out of the miserable Seven Mile area

One of the novel’s many glaring weaknesses, however, is the author’s dismal attempts to portray America and American characters, who are consistently flat. They remain Hollywoodish stereotypes at best. For example, Calvin, her boyfriend, is unemployed and spends his time drinking and watching TV. He thinks the greatest invention of the 20th century was the remote control. Although Zeina exchanges long e-mails with him while in Iraq, we are never given any idea about their content. He conveniently disappears after her return from her first stint in Iraq. We never know much about her brother, Yazan, and what drove him to drugs. Her Arab-American friends who “meet once a month to eat Arab food and dance” don’t fare any better. These missing details, notwithstanding, the novel can be a casual read on a Friday afternoon.

MY NAME IS CALIFORNIA.
FERRARI CALIFORNIA BY DANIEL MADARASSY
ONCE UPON A TIME… OH, COME ON, IT HAS HAPPENED. ME AND THE FERRARI CALIFORNIA.
“Ferrari is not a car; it’s a lifestyle”
W
e met in Abu Dhabi on a sunny Saturday in the month of February. It was love at first sight. So beautiful, so elegant, so sporty. This car takes its inspiration from the spirit and emotions of one of the great Ferraris of the past – the 1957 250 California, which was an open-top track-built car. It contained not only the sportiness and performance but also exclusivity and faultless sophistication. The signature feature of this car is its retractable hard top made from aluminum panels and has a cast aluminum weight bearing structure. The opening/closing cycle is just around 14 seconds. THE EXTERIOR STORY Let’s take a look at the exterior. Of course it is crafted by Paolo Pininfarina, the famous Ferrari designer. Viewed from the side, you can see the compact tail volume and the pulled-back cabin. However, every technical specs (for example the wide tires, the rear diffuser, which slips the car down at high speed, the spoiler of the front bumper) are against the Cx (drag coefficient) value, it is still only

0.32. All other track-built Ferraris have at least 10 per cent more. They were developed in tandem with it styling. Of course it helps to reduce the fuel consumption. The air intake on the bonnet ensures highly efficient cooling of the engine compartment. THE SIGNATURE OF FERRARI: THE ENGINE Now let’s check the soul of every Ferraris – the engine itself. This is the first Ferrari ever on the road with a V8 engine to be mounted in the mid-front. Built entirely from aluminum, it retains the typical Ferrari architecture with a 90 degree angle between the two cylinder banks and a 180
degree angle between the cranks. The engine has a total displacement of 4300 cc and a maximum power output of 460 HP (338 kW)/ 7750 rpm. The maximum torque is 485 Nm @ 5000 rpm. From 0 to 100 kph takes 3.9 s for the California and the top speed is 310 kph. Just be sure you can control the horses. The combined consumption is 13.1 l/100 km, according to the company. This is not the low-consumption type of car. Anyhow, it easily complies with the toughest Euro 5 and Lev2 standards. I mentioned the soul of the Ferrari before; let me tell you something about the VOICE of it. You can’t imagine that feeling! Sit in, start the engine and just listen to the music. AMAZING! Play on this piano with your right toe. I can’t compare any car to the Ferrari. The California has a new dual clutch gearbox with seven gears plus reverse with the now-traditional steering wheelmounted F1-stíle paddles. With the dual clutch, one clutch is used for even-numbered gears and the other for odd-numbered ones, and allows the pre-selection of the next gear required.
LIFESTYLE
The traditional transaxle layout (engine to the front and gearbox to the rear) also contributes to the California’s very good weight distribution (47 per cent front – 53 per cent rear) and to reducing vibration to the bodyshell. Driving in manual mode is a big experience and fun. Just a few cars give you the shot-voice when you gear down before the turns. The California is the very first Ferrari with the new multi-link suspension to the rear and double wishbone suspension to the front. This is the first Ferrari again with carbon-ceramics brakes in the basic package. During driving you can’t really feel these things; that’s why they are good. And of course you need them. The brakes are made especially for sport cars, reducing the break-distance. And thanks to the suspension, you can enter into the turn scot-free. The SCM (Magnetorheological Suspension Control System), debuted on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, is also available on request. There is a switch on the steering wheel called as ’manettino’ which is derived from the Formula 1 experience but of course adjust to the trivial usage. It has three settings as COMFORT, SPORT and CST-OFF. This last setting gives the driver complete freedom and control of the car. Only the ABS stays on. I don’t recommend this setting for the roads. If you are curious, search for a closed big place where you can find out the car’s limits. I tried it and it is amazing. Believe me, there are no limits in the California.
automotive
This is the first Ferrari ever in the road-cars history with a V8 engine to be mounted in the mid-front. with the roof retracted it is 240 l. The fuel tank capacity is 78 l. The tires are 245/40 ZR19” front and 285/40 ZR19” rear. You can also choose 20” tires.
For further details and information, check out the Alfardan Sports Motors Company Showroom at The Pearl-Qatar.
The cockpit of the California fits everybody. I could sit comfortable with my 1.9 meters height. There is also enough headspace with the hardtop on, more than enough for my body and legs. The cute accessory for the second row is the Ferrari baby-seat. ABODE Verdict It is a must-have car. Not something to use every day, but it’s good to know there is a wild beast in the garage, the real predator one. The most important message from the California is that Ferrari is not a car; it’s a lifestyle.
THE INTERIOR STORY The interior materials are also great; of course at this level cars have leather seats and overlay. The seam matches the outside colour. Another new feature is the TFT Multidisplay with 6.5” touchscreen. Sat Nav, USB connection, Bluetooth voice commands and iPod connector are also available. The boot capacity is 340 l;

he future of the mid-sized crossover SUVs has landed. The Subaru Tribeca was definitely inspired by a flock of Star Trek fans boasting a design concept beyond the normal. Quite conspicuous on the outside with polished sporty edges and a friendly smile to match. Larger in size when compared to its cross-brand siblings, the Tribeca is definitely wider, measuring up to 108.2 inches. Big enough to seat seven comfortably and great for touring the wide open streets of busy Doha.

THE WELCOMING INTERIORS I was welcomed by the luring new car smell. The Tribeca is spacious and the driver’s space reminded me again of the main bridge onboard the Starship Enterprise. An immense dashboard with unsightly knobs manages the tri zone automatic climate control. Air conditions seats are an added plus for those torturous summer months. For the first time, I felt reassured that not all SUVs were designed for the burly, meat eating, rodeo goers types as the driver seat could elevate high enough for me not to struggle to see the front end. An additional plus was the tilt steering so flexible it can be brought down up close and personal. Even mimic the drive steer of a F1 driver. Blast the tunes away with the fully equipped ten speaker Harman Kardon sound system with a six CD changer and satellite radio and additional interior ambient lighting for the console. The Sunroof is just an added treat to make your smile even wider.

THE FLAWLESS TECH SPECS The Subaru Tribeca is powered by a 3.6 litre horizontally opposed six cylinder engine producing 256 horsepower and 247 pound feet of torque. With its signature traction boosting all-wheel drive that splits the power 45 front/55 rear under normal circumstances and redistributed power on the fly as needed, it is an easy enough car to drive around. Its standard models come fully equipped
with five-speed automatic transmission with a sport and manual shift mode too. Just to satisfy the urge to put your pedal to the metal. I was set for a smooth and comfortable ride as its all-wheel drive system takes control with 55 percent of the power to the rear wheels. When at top speed, avoiding the newly indicated speed traps around town, the Tribeca comes alive from 0 – 60 mph at a leggy sprint in 7.8 seconds.
To sum up, its’ safety features I had noticed it had front seat side airbags, full length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints – just to make sure leaving no stone unturned. Thank you Subaru for designing a responsible SUV. It has my vote!

AUTO ROUNDUP ELEGANT AND SPORTY BMW X3: A NEW ERA IN DRIVING DYNAMICS AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY The all new BMW X3, the second generation model arrives seven years after the world’s most successful premium automotive manufacturer introduced its original X3 Sports Activity Vehicle. With a totally redesigned exterior and interior, the new X3 model is instantly recognisable as a member of the BMW X family that includes the popular BMW X6, X5 and X1 models. Reiner Braun, Director of Sales and Marketing, BMW Group Middle East: “The new BMW X3 is a versatile vehicle that now shares many of the design characteristics found in our hugely popular X5 model. With the new sportier design, additional spaciousness and innovative technology that includes the most fuel efficient engines in its class, we expect this new model to build on our successful X model story and contribute to a fruitful year for us in 2011.”
INFINITI ETHEREA MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Designed in Japan under the direction of Senior Vice President of Design, Shiro Nakamura, ETHEREA is more coupé than hatchback in inspiration, with many Infiniti flourishes first seen on the Essence concept supercar. However, ETHEREA’s elegant profile is not at the expense of practicality. Despite appearances, ETHEREA boasts a large lift-up tailgate. Encapsulating everything that Infiniti stands for in a car 4.4m long, ETHEREA proposes a bold new approach to the premium compact segment. ETHEREA’s segment-busting appeal is based on the coming together of several vehicles styles. It is part elegant coupé, part spacious sedan, part practical hatchback and even part tall crossover. And being an Infiniti, there is also a large helping of sports car in the way it drives. Like all Infinitis, ETHEREA puts driving pleasure high up alongside design.
SUBARU UNVEIL IMPREZA CONCEPT CAR The Subaru Impreza Concept is powered by a next-generation Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine with improved environmental friendliness. The combination of the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated Boxer engine with a Lineartronic (CVT) represents Subaru’s next-generation powertrain. The Impreza Concept blends environmental friendliness and comfortable ride with the trusted performance that Subaru’s traditional symmetrical AWD provides. The result increases the “enjoyment and peace of mind” concept that lies behind the Subaru Impreza Concept. Designed especially to create a direction for future Impreza models, the Subaru Impreza Concept harmoniously blends advanced Subaru design with superior driving confidence.

IPAD 2 IS HERE! 1. The new iPad 2 is everything most men want to be. The new device is slimmer, better looking, faster, more clever and more appealing to women, now that it’s available in girlie white. 2. Another significant difference, perhaps one that has been overlooked by fans the most, is the introduction of the gyro. The new iPad 2 also weighs less and has an increased web browsing speed. 3. That’s the bit of technology that allows the iPad 2 to sense your movements and it makes a massive change to gaming on the go. 4. The new A5 chip makes for a quality of gaming on a par with the Xbox, thanks to graphics which are nine times faster. 5. Other upgraded bits include a better-than-before GarageBand App, which is packed full of ‘made for idiots’ instruments. 6. This allows people with no musical skills whatsoever to play instruments and is bound to appeal to Rock Band fans. 7. The new iPad 2 can be purchased in Qatar at Virgin Mega Stores and www.shipmypad.com starting in April.

during the first two weeks could find you in lovely surroundings. If you must travel, make sure you triple check everything before you leave with Mercury retrograde all month. The last half of April could provide you with some surprises on the job and regarding your career.
SCORPIO The career sector is jumping with activity and excitement this month. You may be thrust into the limelight over your accomplishments. There could be major advancements and pay increases from ideas and hard work you have put forth. If you must travel this month, wait until the last day when aspects favour a journey filled with peace, smooth sailing and quiet joy.
YOUR APRIL STARS... Who among us is not interested in knowing what this month beholds in our lives? What will it be like at work? How will my health be? How careful should I be with my money? These and much more for YOU. ARIES
CANCER
Romance flows freely in your life this month. It always does at this time of year. There could be some real surprises along these lines. Persons could step from the shadows with flowers for you. People you had never considered romantically before
Your money is highlighted this month. It’s all good news, though. You may be feeling the effects of a budget put into place months ago, thus resulting is a surplus of funds. Also, changes that you could have made at the personal level bear meaningful fruit during this two-week period of April.
could pursue with vigour and vice versa.
TAURUS The home front is looking so right this month. Any improvements you have made or are working on paying big dividends during the first half of this month. If there are things that you would like to change regarding your abode, this would be the right time to undertake that effort. The results will be very satisfying. Watch it for a time before you decide otherwise!
GEMINI This will be an interesting month for you as the emphasis is on communication. There could be a flurry of information coming your way. The problem is Mercury is retrograde for the month. You may have to triple-check that information before releasing it to others. The last two weeks of the month will find you drawn to your home.
100 ABODE APRIL 2011
LEO You’re bubbling with energy this month with the Sun and Mars in your first house of self. The energy last for three weeks and it’s a good time to get out there and do the projects you’ve been thinking about. During the month, there could be confusing signals and signs coming from your committed other.
VIRGO Normally, this is your month for taking it easy, but April finds you dealing with a behind-the-scenes well spring of energy that must be dealt with or there could be consequences to your health that would be hard to diagnose. Seek ways to alleviate the pressure.
LIBRA Activities with friends sweep you through this April with fun at every turn. Short trips
SAGITTARIUS Now is a good time to consider increasing your knowledge at the higher education level. Perhaps embarking on a new path of enlightenment or just a reading really thick book. Travel is favoured as well, but with Mercury retrograde it’s advisable to triple-check you plans, schedules, and itinerary for mishaps that could catch you by surprise.
CAPRICORN Joint money, taxes and insurance will hold your attention for the first two weeks of the month. Good news could be coming your way, just when you needed it the most. Careful planning may be required to stretch funds after the 21st, at a time when you feel the pull of the open road and the need to get away from it all.
AQUARIUS Personal committed relationships dominate your life for the first three weeks of April. Renewed romance and enthusiasm could find its way back into this area. If you’re not in a committed relationship, look for happiness to come through your business partners.
PISCES Your job scene is hopping with action and fun this month. You could get a raise or a promotion or both. Your health should be in tip-top shape so get out of the house and move around. This would be an excellent time to start a new diet or exercise plan. During the last half of the month your focus shifts to partnerships and serious relationships.
