Defying time and contrasting with the harmony of the Alentejo landscape, the historic town of Monsaraz imposes its grandeur

Its occupation dates back to prehistoric times, with several hundred archaeological sites recorded in the region from the Paleolithic, Neolithic (megalithic), Chalcolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age periods The primitive human occupation of Monsaraz, probably a fortified hillfort, was later Romanized and occupied successively by Visigoths, Arabs, Mozarabs and Jews

In the 8th century, Monsaraz would fall under the rule of Islam during the Muslim invasions that occupied a large part of the Iberian Peninsula. This then came to be called Saris or Sarish and belonged to the kingdom of Badajoz, one of the largest and main centers of Arab culture. The process of Christian Reconquest reached Monsaraz in 1167, in an expedition that departed from Évora and was led by Geraldo Sem Pavor.

The capture of Monsaraz lasted only a few years, as in 1173 it fell once again under the rule of the Almohad Caliphate, following the Portuguese defeat in Badajoz Only later, in 1232, D Sancho II, with the help of the Knights Templar, managed to definitively incorporate Monsaraz under Christian rule, donating it to the Order of the Temple, which was responsible for its defense and repopulation.

The repopulation of the town only occurred during the reign of D Afonso III and by the hand of the knight Martim Anes, a man of the king's trust, who was responsible for combating the centers of Arab resistance and executing the administrative, judicial and military institutions drawn up in the charter. 1276. At this time, the municipality of Monsaraz was created, whose territory was demarcated by D João Peres de Aboim, lord of the Portel estate and the Defense of Esporão

Thus begins the Christian period in Monsaraz. And as such, the construction of the structures described in the charter of 1276 began. Despite the fortifications that were built in Monsaraz during the third Fernandina war (1381-1382), an English force took the town by storm and proceeded to loot the which, four years later, was invaded again by Castilian troops Before the war ended (1383-1385), Monsaraz was recovered by D Nuno Álvares Pereira

In 1422, through a donation from Constable D Nuno Álvares Pereira to his grandson D. Fernando, Monsaraz was incorporated into the House of Bragança, establishing, in matters of fiscal taxation, one of the most valuable links of this Portuguese ducal house. In 1512, D. Manuel granted a new charter to the town of Monsaraz, reforming and regulating the municipality's public and legal life

After the proclamation of independence from the Spanish Crown in 1640, the Bragança dynasty began to carry out a major campaign to build modern fortifications on the Portuguese border line, of which Monsaraz is no exception. The Vauban-style building advances around the castle, surrounding the town with walls adapted to artillery fire.

The condition of a castellated medieval town, the strong growth of the villages of Reguengos, located on an easily accessible plain and the development of artisanal and wine-making activities, together with the loyalty of the population of Monsaraz to Miguelist ideals, which were defeated in the civil war of 1828 -1834, are decisive factors that led to the transfer of the county seat to Aldeia dos Reguengos in 1838, where it was definitively established in 1851
