Three Tips For Tropical DĂŠcor
W
e live in a tropical climate, yet we always look at programs and websites that feature temperate designs to follow. Here are some ideas that are suitable for right here at home. Set A Suitable Colour Scheme Recreate the palettes found in tropical foliage with neutral ivory, beige, khaki, mocha and brown, as well as shades of green. You might be drawn to muted tones of olive and sage, or opt for greens that are saturated and vibrant. Spice up your hot weather decor with warm
colors, such as coral, red, russet, orange and yellow, that is often found among exotic flowers. Choose natural textures and surfaces Once we speak about colour, texture isn’t going to be far behind. Natural textures can infuse an island feel throughout your home. Think sheer linen fabrics for bedding, draperies
and upholstery, and wall coverings in grass cloth or basket weave-like textures. For floors, choose rugs in materials like sisal or jute, or go even further with bamboo flooring or driftwood tiles throughout your home. Free-Flowing and Functional Functionality usually beats fashion so consider the impor-
tance of air flow. Floor plans in hot and dry climates should always be open, for maximum air flow from room to room. Go for a design with windows at each end of the house. This will reduce energy usage as you will not need air-conditioning as much. Also, the addition of a vaulted ceiling will give the hot air somewhere to escape well away from the people.
Child Friendly Furniture
Y
ou can ask any family member who has children and they will tell you the one piece of furniture that is always a victim of a growing child is the sofa. Before having children, you chose your sofa or sectional based on your taste. This often means it is not kid friendly. Choosing a sofa, chair or chaise fabric or upholstery that is kid friendly can keep your furniture looking great through the younger years of your child. Keep in mind that your furniture will be subject to spit-up, spills, crayons, and even shoes being worn on your couch. These are the most common causes for damage. This makes it highly important to choose spill and tear resistant upholstery. Some of the
more popular choices include:
Leather: Leather has been a popular choice for many families. As leather is spill resistant and harder to rip than cotton fabrics, most leather furniture will stay looking great for years. Sensuede: Sensuede is a manmade fabric made from recycled fibers. It is easy to clean, supple, and comfortable. Crypton: Crypton is an extremely stain resistant fabric that was originally intended for hospitals, restaurants, and public areas. Recently interior designers have brought this fabric into homes for use where the stain resistant and antibacterial properties of the fabric would be useful. w w w . a m g tt. c o m
Microfiber: The tight -knit weave of microfiber creates upholstery that is highly stain resistant while offering a comfortable seating area.

Useful Cleaning Tips
I
t has been said that imitation is the best form of flattery. Even so, why try to flatter Oscar the Grouch with a dirty abode? Furthermore, can a puppet really feel flattered? Instead of trying to answer those questions, (which I hope you realized were rhetorical) try picking up a broom or a wet rag and let’s start cleaning. We at Abstract Home have the best tips to get you started on house cleaning and we are sharing them with you right here free of charge. Before you start cleaning you should know that there are some things which cannot be cleaned using conventional methods. For instance, regular soap and water just won’t do the trick where removing blood stains or crayon marks is concerned. Try using normal hair shampoo on blood stains on fabric. Let the shampoo set on the stain for about a minute then rinse it off. This also works on stained shirt collars as shampoo breaks down body oils well. There are other ways to remove blood stains as well. Put a paste of water and cornstarch, cornmeal or talcum powder on fresh spots. Let dry and brush off. If the blood is on fabric you can also wet a long piece of white cotton thread with saliva and place it across the spot. The thread will absorb the blood. For removing crayon marks on painted walls, scrub with toothpaste or an ammoniasoaked cloth. If you have a problem removing heel marks from surfaces, easily rub them off with a pencil eraser. Now that you have removed those heel marks, you can keep your wooden floor surfaces shiny and beautiful with 2
this tip. Place a piece of wax paper under your dust mop just before mopping. Dust particles will collect on the dust-mop while the wax paper will shine your floor. Speaking of wax, candle wax on fabric can be removed by placing a brown bag on the wax and running a hot iron over it. Wax on floors can be reheated with a blow-dryer then wiped away with a paper towel. Window cleaning is often troublesome for many. This is because windows have to deal with dust from inside as well as dust and weather effects from the outside. Window treatments such as curtains and blinds assist in trapping dust on window sills and panes which means when it’s time to finally clean them you are in for double duty. Fear not, because we have window cleaning tips for you as well. 1. Clean windows when it is slightly overcast. Direct sunlight causes the cleaning solution to dry too quickly, leaving streaks. 2. Formulate a pattern for wiping. Clean the inside from top to bottom and wipe the outside side to side or vice versa. This way you will be able to identify missed spots and know which side they are on. 3. Dust or vacuum sills before wiping. The wetness can interact with the dirt to form messy mud. 4. Use cool, clear water to clean windows. If they are really dirty add two tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water used.

Moving on to doors: There is no better way to make a first impression than to greet people with a clean door upon entry. Cleaning doors makes the entire house look sharper and cleaner. Make sure to begin by wiping away all of the dirt that has settled on top of the door, its frame and hinges. Those places (much like window sills and ceiling fan tops) have a propensity for getting dirty. After all, just because the stuff that settles on top your door looks like velvet or felt does not mean it is. Depending on the finish of your door scrub it thoroughly with a mild solution. Be careful not to destroy the varnish or paint. Now that your doors are clean you can invite people inside. Just make sure that your counter tops and centre tables are clean. If you have glass table tops, clean them by rubbing them with a little lemon juice. After that, use a paper towel to dry them and shine them with a crumpled newspaper. For any surface scratches to the glass table top use toothpaste. The toothpaste adds luster to your dull, abused glass furniture. A similar approach can be taken when cleaning marble tops. To remove stains, sprinkle salt on a fresh cut lemon. Rub very lightly over stain. Do not rub hard or you will ruin the polished surface. Wash off with soap and water. Apart from the more obvious things we have to clean there are some things which never really get the attention they deserve when cleaning. Doorknobs need their fair share of cleaning as well. Disinfect doorknobs and light switches as these areas are
always being contaminated by dirty hands. Use a disinfectant spray then wipe with a clean wet cloth. Plants get dusty too. Give smaller plants a quick dousing in the kitchen sink. Larger ones can be cleaned with a shower in the bathroom. Alternatively, they can both be cleaned by a gentle spraying and wiping of the leaves. Now that we have dealt with tips on cleaning several surfaces, here are some general cleaning tips which should make house-cleaning less taxing for you. 1. Always clean top to bottom. When you dust, start at the top and work down. Gravity causes dust to fall downward, so it makes sense to start from the top. 2. In order to avoid unnecessary trips back and forth when cleaning, take all your cleaning tools with you into each room. 3. Leaving baking soda on carpeting for the night as a tool for absorbing musty odors. Sprinkle the baking soda and vacuum in the morning. Never underestimate the power of scent. 4. When it comes to dealing with urine spots act on them quickly with a solution of dish detergent and water. Once you take these simple things into account you can get through rooms quickly and progress to the next step. Cleaning your home can be quite a task especially if there are kids in the house or it is holiday time. Hopefully the information dispensed here will serve to make your life a little easier and much cleaner.

Ten Indoor Gardening Tips
beautiful outdoor garden can do wonders for the look of your home, but an indoor garden can be equally beneficial. In addition to providing you with the right amount of oxygen and the ability to be used as a food source, indoor plants can be aesthetically pleasing as well. Here are some indoor garden maintenance tips. Tip 1 Although certain plants do really well indoors, they still have the tendency to reach towards a light source. For instance, if your light source is towards the right side, all your plants would be inclined towards the right side in order to get sunlight. It’s better to rotate your plants occasionally for them to grow straight. Tip 2 Make sure your plants get enough sunlight. If your plants do not get their daily requirement of sunlight they might appear very thin and frail. If your home doesn’t get ample sunlight, do not worry. You can buy plants that are appropriate for medium to low light environments. Otherwise you can try placing your plants outside during mornings for a few hours and then move them inside for the rest of the day.

plant leaves and stem, that is why it is important to clean them. You can add a spray attachment to the nozzle of your hose and gently shower your plants. If not, wipe each individually with a soft damp cloth.
Tip 3 Watering right would solve most of your problems. More plants tend to die of improper watering than due to any other problem. Make sure you use room temperature water. Although different plants have different watering needs, you can follow one thumb rule – Too much dryness and too much wetness are both bad for your plant. Make sure your containers and your soil have proper drainage. Tip 4 Bathe your plants occasionally. Yes, we said bathe. Often grime and dust tends to settle over the
ABSTRACT HOME FEBRUARY 2016 w w w . a mg t t .c o m
Tip 5 Like ample sunlight, plants require ample fresh air too. The plants tend to suffer a great deal if they are kept in smoky or stagnated air. Keep your doors and windows open and allow your plants to breathe fresh air. Second hand cigarette smoke is dangerous to plants in much the same way as humans too, so don’t smoke around your plants (especially in enclosed areas). Tip 6 Keep a check on your home temperature. Plants tend to grow well at a certain temperature. Around 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day time and 10 degrees lower at night. Air condition units should be monitored to ensure it is not too cold. Tip 7 Keep a record of each of your plants’ names, species, purchase date, fertilizer dates, repotting dates etc just as you would maintain your child’s medical reports.
It will help you to maintain your plants systematically. Tip 8 Fertilize your plants regularly. Every time we water, some of the soil’s essential nutrients get flushed out of the soil. You can use a liquid fertilizer and add it in small amounts when you water your plants. Keeping a track of your fertilization dates would help you. If you fertilize your plants too much or too often, you will end up burning your plants. Tip 9 Soil is an integral ingredient for a healthy plant. If you are growing your plants in a container, avoid using soil from the garden. It will not yield good results. Besides, it may also leave your indoor plants at risk of insects, weeds and other diseases. You can buy good container soil from a plant nursery. Tip 10 Make sure your pots have proper drainage holes on their surface below. Most pots tend to be sold without drainage holes, but you should make holes on your pots yourself. Without proper drainage holes the water in the soil tends to collect in the pot and damage the roots and your plant will almost certainly die.

Boost Your Customer Relations To Drive Sales
rinidad and Tobago may be a paradise in many senses, but one thing a lot of people would agree on is our customer service is generally nightmarish. Despite it being part of our culture and so widespread that it offers few options; just think how much more revenue you could make if you put in the extra effort. Project the Right Image You are your company’s best role model. Employees take their cue from management and sometimes look up to them on more than just a business level. Realize that your people will treat your customer the way they are treated. With that said, greet your employees enthusiastically each day. Be extra polite in your dealings with them; and accommodate their requests as you would a customer’s. Be a good listener and when employees are quiet try to feel them out and engage them. Also, try to look the part. It’s not about showing off with fancy designer threads or accessories. What is important is that you are clean and sharp. Consistent bad customer service is a reflection not as much on the employee as on management. 8
Show Them You Care Good prices may not be enough. People will spend where they feel comfortable and connected. When a customer decides to invest in your business, you need to reciprocate by investing in them. It is important to look at the individual and not the numbers and show that you care about everyone individually. Try to organize some form of customer appreciation so it reminds customers that you are a business that is worth buying from and that you plan to earn their loyalty. You don’t have to break the bank to show you appreciate them. Just note that even small gestures will leave a lasting impression and encourage them to share their experience with your company. That’s what you call a win-win situation. Own Up When Wrong When you are in the wrong, be sure to own up. No matter if you find out your error long after the fact. Don’t just own up, but be sure to apologize. It's not difficult and customers like it. Even when you are not wrong, make it your business to trash out any miscommunication. The customer may not always be right, but the customer must always

win. Whatever the case, don’t let it fester. Deal with problems immediately and let customers know what you have done. Don’t hide either; make it simple for customers to complain. Value their complaints. Solicit Feedback Speaking of complaints, soliciting feedback is imperative to improving. You may unearth problems that existed way below the surface. It also reveals ways in which the relationship can be expanded to include a greater scope of products or services. Feedback also helps you to distinguish between wants and needs which are likely to vary from time to time. Avenues for soliciting feedback should be open all the time and easily accessible whether in person or online. Don’t go with the generic survey forms. Tailor something to the individual customer. The most important aspect of getting feedback is that you must be willing and able to act upon it. The worst thing you can do is gather feedback and sit back inactively with all that knowledge. Stick to Your Word Don’t blatantly lie to a customer. Ever! Only ever offer a cus-
tomer or client something that you are sure you can give them. If you are unsure about when or if you can deliver a service or product; don’t make a promise or commitment to the consumer that you are unlikely to keep. Furthermore, just be real. It is better to tell your hotel guests that the fire alarm system is being tested in the morning than let them find out for themselves. Stick to deadlines, make sure you turn up promptly for any appointments and never make promises you cannot keep. If situations change then let the customer know as soon as possible. Walk in their Shoes Look at the situations your customers have found themselves in. How did they arrive in that position and how did your company contribute to it? Whether you are working with a customer, either on the phone or in person, a good trick is pretending it’s you that needs something. Think of what would ultimately make you happy. How would you like to be greeted and treated? Where customer service is concerned, think of the credo: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

KITCHEN
Considerations For Building A Kitchen
N
o matter how small it is, building a kitchen is a massive undertaking in home design. Kitchens have evolved from being just the place where food is cooked, into a place where people eat and socialize as well. However you plan to use your kitchen, there are some basic considerations before proceeding. Lighting Rooms generally need three types of lighting: general lighting for overall illumination, task lighting, and accent lighting. As you evaluate the work areas in your kitchen, start to focus on how you'll provide each spot with the light it needs. Most kitchens have general lighting that's provided by an overhead fixture together with natural light from a window or ambient light contributed by a fixture in an adjoining room. Where many kitchen design strategies fail is in not providing enough task lighting. Prep areas, the sink and the stove should all have dedicated task lighting. The locations for these fixtures should be identi16
and natural wood countertops need regular maintenance and special handling. Ventilation The best kitchen design fades in the presence of noxious odors. If you’ve ever walked into someone’s home and smelled last night’s fish lingering in the air, you’ll understand the importance of good ventilation. Inexpensive range hoods simply circulate dirty, stale air, while a good ventilation system will improve the quality of your indoor air and also help keep your kitchen cleaner. It also helps to extend the life of your appliances. fied before you begin work because they'll require electrical service. Counter Space One of the biggest complaints about kitchen design is the lack of countertops. You want your countertops to be decorative, but they have to be functional, too. When updating your kitchen, make sure that you have

enough countertop workspace by evaluating how you use your countertops now and planning for your future needs. The amount of space you need will be specific to your circumstances and will vary with the size limitations of your room and budget. Materials matter, too. Where laminates are rugged and heavy-duty, some of the high priced stone, concrete, metallic
Beware of Trendiness Although it’s not necessarily a mistake, the latest kitchen trends and high-end equipment may not be the best choices. Trendy colors and designs have a short life, and you may never see a return on your large investments in the latest kitchenware. Look for kitchen innovations and appliances that are timeless.

Planning The Perfect Beach Wedding
T
he sound of the ocean, the grains of sand between your toes, the cool breeze brushing against your skin and your soul mate waiting for you at the end of the lane are just some of the things you can experience if having a beach wedding. However like most things, if not well thought out, they can turn into a total disaster. Here are some tips when planning the ultimate beach wedding!
1
Guest List - It is important to decide on this from the beginning, as it will help guide other important factors such as location and budget. Beach weddings are usually small and intimate and while planning a larger wedding is not impossible, those with fewer guests tend to have a bit more flexibility.
2
No need for artificial additions - The beach setting is already gorgeous and does not need many decorative pieces. “A beach wedding can be about shells and starfish, but it can also take inspiration from the harmonious color palette of sand, dune grasses, stones and water,” says Karen Bussen of Simple Stunning in New York. Another piece of advice, add some color. To make your setup really pop, Sasha Souza of Sasha Souza Events suggests, “Choose colors that contrast the sand and the surf rather than blend in, like corals, greens and other vibrant tones.” 20
3
Scout various locations - An excellent and efficient way of doing this would be to create a table to compare and contrast the locations. Keep in mind if it’s not easily accessible, some of your guests may not be able to attend.
4
Do your research -Make sure to find out about permits, licenses, noise ordinance and any other fees that will need to be paid to the relevant authorities. The registrar's office should be contacted for specific rules regarding planning a beach wedding in Trinidad & Tobago. They will also provide information regarding marriage licenses and marriage certificates. The contact information for this is: Trinidad Registrar General's Office Registrar House 72 - 74 South Quay Port of Spain Tel: 868 623 7163 Tobago Warden's Office Inland Revenue Building Sangster's Hill Scarborough Tel: 868 639 2410.
5
Plan for the environment - Analyze the environment. The imagery it provides may be beautiful but a lot of things can work against you in this type of setting. The sound of the waves crashing on the shore may be known for its soothing effects but think about how your guests will feel if they can’t hear the couple making their vows. Renting a small PA
ABSTRACT HOME FEBRUARY 2016 w w w . a mg t t .c o m
system may be the solution. The breeze is also another factor to think about. Keep in mind that anything that can blow away will! Kelly McWilliams of Weddings by Socialites in Cape Coral, Florida says “if you’re using ceremony programs, weigh them down with shells, tie them to chairs with ribbon or print them on fans, which perform double duty. Also if you envision a perfectly petal-lined aisle, do not toss them until the absolute last moment, right before the guests arrive.” Lastly, don’t forget about the not so loving bugs: Mosquitoes! Providing odorless repellent for your guests is a good idea; just make sure it’s a brand that won’t stain. Another suggestion is to include citronella candles in your décor.
6
Restrooms - If the ceremony is held at a hotel or beach resort, be sure to inform all guests of the exact location of the bathrooms. If it takes place on a private/public beach, consider renting portable toilets.
7
Dress the part - Big dresses are not ideal for a beach wedding “you may be able to get down the aisle in a full dress and long train but walking on the beach and taking photos won’t be easy. If a large dress is a must, make sure it can bustle easily” says Paulette Davis of Bahamas Wedding Planner. Experts advise that brides should choose a lightweight fabric like chiffon or charmeuse
so the gown flows in the ocean breeze.” Forget about the heels! No bride wants to be remembered as the ‘bride that fell in sand on her wedding day!’ To prevent that nightmare from happening, consider wearing flat-sole sandals, espadrilles or wedges… shoes that won’t sink into the sand.
8
Seats - Tara Guerard destination wedding planner recommends wooden benches, folding chairs and waterproof ottomans, as they are heavy enough to withstand the ocean breeze.
9
Time of the Day -when picturing their beach wedding, many brides dream of saying "I do" just as the sun sets in the background. Mornings are wonderful as well especially if using a public beach. The beaches tend to be empty at that time and the lighting is perfect for photography. Not to mention, it is also the coolest time of the day.
10
Have a backup plan - Since the weather can be unpredictable, celebrity-wedding planner Colin Cowie recommends “to keep the party on the beach, have a canopy or tent ready or find a space indoors where everything can take place.”
11
Have Fun - After all it’s your wedding you’re planning NOT your funeral!
FAMILY
Keep The Clan Close With Traditions
M
aintaining meaningful family traditions is key to keeping a family connected.Traditions are practices or beliefs that create positive feelings and are repeated at regular intervals. They're more than routine everyday activities that involve little emotion. Often traditions are handed down from generation to generation and some come from cultural or ethnic heritage, but every family can create its own traditions as well. Effective traditions promote a sense of identity and a feeling of belonging Keeping your family close must start when your children are young. Instill in them the importance of family; chances are your message will stick as they grow. By creating family traditions you cultivate connections between immediate family members and between generations. It gives them something to look forward to which gives them a sense of assurance in a hectic and ever-changing world where busy lifestyles can take a toll on family time. Many families that have grown and multiplied considerably but are scattered through the country make it a point to hold a family reunion each year.
22
This is a great opportunity for cousins to get to meet one another, sisters to catch up on gossip and mothers to sit back and enjoy their children and grandchildren. Regular participation in meaningful traditions helps families. Here are ideas for creating meaningful family traditions for your family: Aim for a moderate number of traditions. Families with too few traditions have trouble staying unified. They tend to forget or ignore important events in family members’ lives. Families with too many traditions, on the other hand, dilute the importance of each tradition. Establish new traditions. Fairly often traditions come about by happenchance. Your eldest son giving his cousin the present you bought him last year for Christmas this year, which everyone but him remembers. Choose traditions that include everyone and are sensitive to the needs of all family members. Remember that every family is unique; do what works for you. Also don't overwhelm the family with new traditions. Pick one or two and see how things go.

Common Family Traditions Birthdays – the birthday person gets to choose his or her favorite menu then everyone except the birthday person helps prepare the meal. Saturdays are Dad's day to make breakfast with the kids. Using the ‘special dishes’ on birthdays Establish your own holiday or celebration day and mark it in the calendar- this could be the ‘Johnson Family Birthday"
Get everyone involved and have fun with it. No yelling for forgetting lines, have 6, 9, 12 wisemen if necessary! For every day in December, burn a candle while participating in a family activity. It does not have to be a daunting marshal ritual, simply watching a movie together or preparing fruit punches for the team is reason enough. Each year, add a special emblem to stockings signifying an important event from that year. Add a tie for Simon who graduated, a rose for Cathy’s new love and so on. Set New Year resolutions for the family as a team. Everyone signs the ‘proclamation and it’s left somewhere you can all see it regularly.
Christmas Christmas is a perfect backdrop for family traditions. An annual family reunion, a gathering of the flock, is necessary for every family and this is the most popular time for the get together. Instead of store bought gifts, handmade gifts can be mandatory. If the family cannot all get together pick another time of year when it is possible and have it then. Act out the Christmas story.
Valentine's Day Traditions Draw names for secret pals the week before Valentine's Day. Perform small acts of service and kindness for that person, similar to ‘Christmas Angel’ then reveal your identities on Valentine's Day. Make heart-shaped cookies and give them to friends or people in your neighborhood who are alone. Call relatives and tell them you love them.
Make sure you have spiritual traditions. Traditions that bring family members closer together should be a priority. Some of the simplest spiritual traditions include praying together or reading from sacred writings together.

Carnival Beauty Predictions

or women, Carnival is the perfect opportunity to explore different made up
looks. Though the event itself lasts for only two days, the creativity and style varies. Monday is known to be the more relaxed of the two. On Tuesday however, masqueraders tend to go the extra mile and experiment a little more with their appearances. Last year we noticed lots of feather eyelashes and coloured gems adorning the face and body. So what can you expect for 2016? Here’s what the experts had to say: Bridget Pouchet, professional airbrush and traditional Makeup Artist – “My beauty predictions according to my clients is less gems, beautiful eye makeup with a pop of colour, smoked out with neutral tones. Airbrush makeup is becoming quite popular as the finish is flawless and longevity is amazing” Sarah Benjamin Paul, a certified airbrush/traditional makeup artist who trained with
Sacha cosmetics and Celebrity Makeup Artist, Mario Dedivanovic had a different view. “Definitely dramatic lashes, glitter eyes, colorful brows & lips. With the usual use of gems,” she opined. Those are just two of the many professionals to share with us. However, Carnival is about self-expression, so don’t be afraid to do whatever you feel suits you best. It’s not always about following trends.
Carnival Shoe Frenzy
rom the office to the clubs to the malls: the shoe game is crazy right now! Ladies footwear that is; even as gladiators and other casual flats are being played up in spicy designs, heels are easily stealing the limelight. Whether futuristic or vintage, designer collections or impressive look-alikes are looking fabulous. The colors, the designs and the accessories put together have managed to capture everyone's attention from fashion critiques to celebrities. Because being fashionable and stylish implies paying attention to the current fashion trends and developing a unique style contoured around your personality, beware of the hottest shoe trends and must have shoes of the season. Black and metallics with bondage inclinations are turning up at clubs in a big way. The details in some pieces are outlandish, stylish and bold. Others are deceptively simple but a closer look reveals a punch of extravagant details. Boyish brogues add a touch of masculinity to the 2010’s delicate fabrics and frills and ruffles. The shape, the height, the colors and combination of style and detail are all part of the package this time around. Exposed zippers, metal eyelets and strappy junky blacks are raging on, still. Lace-ups and bandage-style straps especially in blacks and metallics are just perfectly fierce to use the new over-used fashion term. Wedges and peep-toe pumps hold on to their staying power to show off that summer pedicure. Ankle boots are probably the biggest sudden seller, and if for no w w w . a m g tt. c o m
other reason than overall joy that knee high boots in our climate are headed out, we are happy. Booties are haute this year, chic and stylish and available in versions ranging from fancy, retro and trendy to sleek. They go with anything you wear, be it skirts, pants, jeans or dresses and are almost guaranteed to up your style measure instantly. You could go for suede booties, booties with bows, strapped booties, with platforms, with ties, cutout booties, ruffled ones, velvet lace ups, cage booties, and even booties with feathers and glitter. The peep toe ankle boots are stark raving hot, very stylish and also wearable in a number of different styles - to the movies: skinny jeans, a vest and a blazer or to the office: with a pencil skirt and a tucked in blouse – fabulous. Remember ‘not everything is for everyone’ ankle boots can make legs seem bulkier and shorter than they actually are and girls with very thin calves could appear to be swimming inside of ankle boots, find your fit, or leave it alone. Stilettos and pumps will always be. Try the sleek chromes, blacks and rocker looks that are taking up the store fronts. Painful, impractical and overpriced? Maybe, but darnnit, they make women’s legs look sexier than anything else! Remember to go easy on the super high stilettos and the super miniskirts… the look’s just sort of uhhhm working-ish. As always, while fashion trends are fun and make for great inspiration, you sometimes need to look beyond what everyone else is scrambling over to find what works for you.

Swine Flu Symptoms
D
uring the festive period you are likely to come into contact with lots of people. This enhances your chances of contracting the virus. With Swine Flu rearing its ugly head in Trinidad again, it’s time to be extra cautious. Swine Flu symptoms are much like those you get with the regular flu. However, these symptoms may have increased intensity. Also, the effects of swine flu can be fatal if not properly treated. It is spread in the same way as the seasonal flu. When people who have it cough or sneeze, they spray tiny drops of the virus into the air. If you come in contact with these drops, touch a surface (like a doorknob or sink) where the drops landed, or touch something an infected person has recently touched, you can catch H1N1 swine flu. No matter how bad your symptoms are, it is important to monitor your situation and be wary of Swine Flu. Here are the symptoms to look out for. Cough Fever Sore throat Stuffy or runny nose 24
Body aches Headache Chills Fatigue Like the regular flu, swine flu can lead to more serious problems including pneumonia, a lung infection, and other breathing problems. And it can make an illness like diabetes or asthma worse. If you have symptoms like shortness of breath, severe vomiting, pain in your belly or sides, dizziness, or confusion, call your doctor immediately.

Carnival Come Back Again… Are You Fit For The Road?
C
K2016 has arrived. Band launch season is over, costumes have been bought and many are rounding out their Carnival diet and fitness plan. We all want to look ‘’bess’’ on the road come Monday and Tuesday. But how? Every body type is different and has specific needs. Plus, it seems like everywhere we turn there is a new breakthrough diet or a fool proof exercise routine guaranteed to help us get in shape. So what do the fitness gurus among us have to say? Mikhail Ragoonanan is a certified personal trainer, gym owner, model and amateur boxer, who received a bronze medal in the 2014 National Championships. Kameel Ali is a spin instructor and model, who placed 4th in the Male Physique Category of the National Junior Bodybuilding Championships 2013. Both of them agree that getting that Carnival bod, starts with a proper diet. Kameel states that you should observe a high protein, clean carb diet with good fats. Get your protein from eggs, fish, turkey and chicken, carbs from oats, provisions and brown rice, fats from seeds and almonds. No simple sugars! Mikhail reinforces this, saying that “I don't recommend any unnatural supplements or diet gim-
micks to my clients since I believe in eating real, natural as possible, whole foods. Educate yourself in the proper diet you need to get to where you want and stick to it.” But diet alone is not enough to get the amazing physique that these guys have. Mikhail trains twice a day, 5 to 6 days a week, doing a combo of a boxing workout and a conditioning routine to develop strength, cardiovascular work, muscular endurance or all at the same time in a crossfit-style workout. Kameel’s routine consists of 4 days of weights and one rest day, on which he does a spin class for cardio. When asked about their personal credo, Mikhail had this to say. “My philosophy for fitness is to have fun with whatever avenues you choose to get in shape. Always keep progressing in any aspect of fitness. It can be as simple as improving your diet or learning a new skill for a workout. Everyone has their own goals; therefore fitness is not a one size fits all. Find out what you want and work towards it. Other people might be training differently but it’s because they have different goals to you.” Similarly, Kameel added that “Fitness is a lifestyle and so should not be seasonal. Also it is important to set practical goals and give yourself enough time in which to achieve them.” So good luck fellow gymers…see you on the road!

Car Detailing Mistakes
W
e love our cars, but sometimes we don’t act like it. A lot of us just don’t know better so we end up doing the wrong things during the car detailing process. Therefore, a process that is supposed to be beneficial ends up pretty bad. Here are three common mistakes. Using The Wrong Tools I'm sure you've heard of "the right tool for the job" and detailing your car is no exception to the rule. For example, Many people use the sponge they washed their car with to clean the wheels, instead of using a wheel brush; or use some old rag to remove wax off of paint instead of using a diaper/microfiber. These "shortcuts" not only affect the quality of the job, but adds up to lot of extra work later on. If the sponge you used on your wheels picked up some brake dust, which did not rinse out, but then wound up scratching your hood the next time you washed your car. How long would it take to polish that scratch out? Washing In Direct Sunlight It’s widely accepted among most detailing companies and professional detailers that you 26
should NOT wash your car in direct sunlight. Some argue that it’s bad for your vehicle’s finish, but at the very least, it makes the job much, much harder. Because the water and cleaner/soap dries quicker in the sun or on a hot surface, you’re more likely to get water spots. And you may even notice swirl marks in your car’s paint after washing. If you absolutely must wash your car in the sun, keep the surface cool with a regular spray of water. Too Much Wax When applying wax, only a thin layer is needed. Slathering on too much car wax is a waste because wax bonds singularly. In other words, there’s only so much wax that will stick to a car at a time. When you remove wax, you’re actually taking off excess that hasn’t adhered to the surface. So no matter how much wax you put on at once, you’ll achieve the same result. Wax can be layered, one coat on top of another, for better protection and a deeper shine. However, if you put on more than necessary during a single application you just create more work for yourself when removing the excess. Plus, it amounts to wasted product.

P
ets provide us with loyalty, companionship, love and affection, as well as many physical and psychological benefits. The least we can do to repay this is ensure that we keep them in the best of health by following the four golden rules to pet ownership. This article expounds on some of the benefits of having a pet. Promoting Health A study at Cambridge University found that owning a pet produced improvements in general health in as little as one month. This continued over the 10 month study. Pet owners were found to suffer fewer ailments, such as headaches, colds and hay fever. Beating Stress Stroking a pet or simply watching a fish swim in an aquarium helps us to relax. Indeed, the mere presence of a pet seems to have the same effect, reducing heart beat rate and lowering blood pressure. Research has shown that this effect is particularly marked in people suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension). The reduction in blood pressure is equivalent to that gained by eating a low salt diet or cutting down on alcohol consumption. Psychological Benefits Children who own pets are often less self-centered than those who do not. Studies show that psychiatrically ill people were happier as a result of looking after a pet.
Social Benefits Pets provide companionship and promote a general feeling of wellbeing. For example, pets in residential homes improve both patient and staff morale. Pets can lessen the feelings of isolation and loneliness and provide a sense of purpose for elderly people. Having to make the effort to care for a pet on a regular basis provides a feeling of fulfillment. Educational Stimulus As well as all the fun elements associated with owning a pet, pets can bring many educational benefits. Owning a pet can teach a child about the responsibilities of life and mutual trust. By feeding and exercising a pet, children can also develop an understanding of daily care. Children with learning difficulties can also benefit from interaction with pets. One study found that the presence of a dog helped to channel the children's attention and responsiveness towards the therapist's suggestions - in effect, the dog helped increase the attention span of the children.

Beach Travel Destinations For The Non-Carnivalholic
arnival is upon us again. However, you may not be the masquerade type. If so, what is there to do? Where is there to go? A nice vacation always works. Airfare away from T&T is always cheaper around this time. If you love the beach, here are some options for you. Pink Sands Beach in the Bahamas - This beach is covered in 5kms of salmon pink coloured sand, due to the mixture of the sea bed’s red plankton and the earth’s fine white sand. Pink Sands is a stunning beach located on Harbor Island in the Bahamas. It is one of the world’s most photographed beaches and is often voted world’s best by most travel publications. Pink Sands is a popular destination for tourists who want to spend their holidays in a more private and intimate manner. Anyone who comes to this part of the Island is stunned by how miraculously nature can create such exquisiteness. Poipu Beach in Kauai Hawaii- In Poipu, the whole family 28
can take their vacation to a higher, more exciting level by engaging in different activities such as camping, ATV (all terrain vehicles) riding, bicycling downhill, surfing, hiking, scuba diving, and other kid-friendly activities. But the best that Poipu can offer would have to be the helicopter rides the whole family can take! Yup, kids are allowed to experience the view of Poipu from the top, as long as their parents or guardians accompany them during the trip. This is probably the most extraordinary way to enjoy your entire stay in Poipu! Surfers Paradise in Queensland Australia- This beach is situated near the commercial

The beach area offers a wide range of water sports such as jet skiing, as well as beach volleyball. If you’d rather stay dry on land, maybe some bungee jumping or golfing will do for you. Clearly the list of activities to do on the beach is endless, and if you’re one who enjoys spending your holidays relaxing without getting out of shape, this is the place to go. Maroma Beach in Yucatan Mexico-This beautiful paradise located in the Yucatan jungle is a prime destination for honeymooners and simple tourists alike. The sight of the crystal waters will stick with you like an unforgettable kiss forever, and you’ll find yourself coming back for more. The tropical climate gives tourists cool nights

It’s perfect for couples who want to spend their vacation privately, where intimacy will never be hard to achieve as the harmony of the beach and the natural wonders around will surely inspire you. Although Maroma is located near the spring break capital of Cancun, you can be sure that you will not be disturbed by all the partying neighbors. Phi Phi Islands in ThailandThis beach is an eye-pleaser. With its azure-and-green-toturquoise waters and its gorgeous flora, this beach shines with beauty. The distinct tropical islands of Phi Phi are refreshingly unspoiled and inexpensive to visit; they are the main reason and often the only reason beach lovers head to Thailand.
