M

other’s Day is here and you owe her big time. That does not mean you should muster up your life savings to pay her back for all the school books she bought you. It just means that you should at least put some thought into what you are getting her. She’s not getting any younger and neither are you. You never know how many more opportunities you have to make your mom smile. We have some gift ideas for various moms that you should consider. Which type do you have? For the Art Lover: Create meaningful artwork. Homemade Mother's Day gifts are among the most meaningful, not to mention cheapest. For a family art project mom will enjoy, make a collage by having each family member leave a handprint on a canvas. You can have it beautifully framed for extra effect. If she’s a grandmother, she’ll love to see the prints detailing all the generations. If not, there must be a gallery she’ll want to visit. For The Green Thumb Mum: The best of all ephemeral arts— which it is much more than a science—is gardening. A beautiful garden, what with all the work that goes into it, can be the most satisfying of hobbies. And if your mom is into it, chances are she’s getting ready to start right around now. And Mother’s Day is the perfect time to get her set up with the best tools

Marvelous Mother’s

Day Gift Ideas

and help bring her garden to the next level.

For Techies: 4G and android technology is all the rage right now. A good bet for a gift would probably get one of the latest Android smart phones. Can somebody say Blackberry Z10? A Galaxy Tab or a Kindle Fire is also another great tech option. If your mom loves to share photos and you think her camera phone isn’t doing her justice, she is probably not as cute as you think she is. In any event, get her a nice digital camera. There are so many options online it will make your head spin but it’s worth it for mommy. Remember, moms of today aren’t like last generation’s mothers who don’t even know how to turn the pc on.

For the Beauty Conscious: There’s nothing like a relaxing and rejuvenating spa treatment to have you feeling and looking your best. A spa gift certificate is a great choice as it offers several options. From massages to makeovers, you can get it all in one package. This is also a great gift for the overworked mom. For Fitness Freaks: Fitness is something your mom has understood to be one of the fundamental parts of a healthy lifestyle; something she cherishes. When you got up early on Saturdays to watch cartoons, she was already out on her daily run and is still one of the healthiest people you know. Help her spice up her routine with some sweet new gear. Just make sure she w w w . a m g tt. c o m

won’t outrun you on your next workout together. For Fashionistas: Accessories/ jewelry is a smarter buy than clothing as you don’t really have to worry about fit as much. They can be simple or very elaborate. If you must purchase clothing, there is no limit to what you can buy. The trick is not falling victim to purchasing flimsy imitations. If you can’t afford the designer gear from overseas, there is a host of local designers who offer great options for a fraction of the price. Local is the ‘in’ thing now. All in all, Mother’s Day shopping doesn’t have to be a pain. Just make simple decisions and they should turn out to be smart. The more you over-plan a present is the more trouble you encounter with the end result. Hope we helped. MAY 2016

Choosing The Right Sink Style

C

hoosing the right sink for your bathroom depends on your understanding of the bathroom’s functionality and decorative needs. There are various types to choose from. Here, we show you what each type encompasses in an effort to assist you with your choice. Pedestal sinks are freestanding sinks that are supported by an underlying pedestal. These sinks are usually quite decorative, as all parts are exposed. When purchasing a pedestal sink it is important to consider that a compatible pedestal must be purchased and that the plumbing under the sink will be exposed. Wall mount sinks are mounted directly to the wall. Wall mount sinks are great for cramped bathrooms as they can

be mounted on a side wall or in the corner. They also allow for additional space underneath the basin and sometimes feature an optional rack for extra storage. Countertop sinks, also called drop-ins and self-rimming, fit into a variety of countertops. And thanks to their self-rimming nature, they're the simplest type to install. Coun-

tertop sinks are the style most commonly found in high-traffic family bathrooms. Undercounter or “undermount sinks are fantastic for minimalistic design schemes. The finished edge of the counter material extends over the sink, and the sink is mounted below the inner edges of the counter opening. Mounting kits

are usually required to install these. These sinks make cleaning bathroom counters a breeze, as water can be wiped seamlessly into the sink, with no raised sink edges to catch grime. Versatile and stylish, abovecounter sinks rise above the countertop, console or cabinet to create a dramatic focal point. These have become popular in a variety of snazzy materials from glass to marble. They are best suited for master baths and powder rooms, especially in contemporary, cosmopolitan homes. Keep in mind that since these sinks sit above the countertop, the countertop should be lower than normal to allow easy access to the sink. Also consider what type of faucet to use with a vessel sink. Tall vessel faucets work well along with wall mounted faucets.

Caring For Cacti

T

he home owner who wants to start a home garden that is light on maintenance, may decide to buy cacti. This is a great plan since they need less water than most plants and are quite hardy. There are, however, still care instructions that need to be followed to increase the life and longevity of all cactus varieties. Some cactus varieties require some fertilizer at times. If this is the case, use fertilizers specifically made for cacti. In any event, most cacti do not need much of a nutritional boost as their demands are small. Too much fertilizer can be more detrimental than beneficial. The fact that cacti do not require much watering is a major plus. In places where water is hard to come by, cactus plants are perfect for the home. Many cacti only need to be watered 2

ABSTRACT HOME MAY 2016 w w w . a mg t t . co m

once per month. What cacti and most succulents do require is lots of warmth. They should be placed on balconies, or near windows or any place there is lots of direct sunlight. If the cactus is accustomed to being in the shade, do give it warmth and sunlight, but overexposure will give it sunburn. Coarse soil is the best soil for

most cacti. They thrive in arid regions and simulated desert environments will be welcomed by the plant. Not much else needs to be considered for the average cactus. However, different varieties of the plant require special treatment. Monitor your plant and respond to it in an effort to take care of any deficiencies which may present themselves.

Safeguard Against Home Repair Scams

t is so hard to get good help these days.’ How many of us have uttered that same sentence as time and time again we have been cheated out of deals and businesses have treated us unfairly? In a world where dishonesty is becoming the norm, homeowners are constantly falling prey to dishonest contractors. When building and/or renovating one’s home, the most powerful weapon is knowledge: try following these tips below in addition to any other information that may be useful.

1

Do not pay for work in full up front. Depending on the project, a larger down payment may be needed than what is usually accepted. Avoid paying this with cash. Use a credit card or cheque to safeguard against any schemers who may wish to take the down payment then disappear. No money should be paid unless there is a written contract, signed by both parties. 4

recently. Be wary of the contractor who tries to hurry you into making a final decision; in the end it is what you want for your home. If you are in a position to wait, seek consultation with other contractors.

4

Ensure that all work to be performed is documented in the contract. These should include cost (labour and material), any materials (quality, amount and type), warranties or guaranties, start and completion date. Minor details such as the person or company responsible for clean-up can also be documented in the contract.

2

Obtain at least three written estimates for the work and compare estimates. Check their credentials; ask what other projects they have worked on and if they can show you samples. Ask the contractor if he has an insurance policy, especially if performing roofing or painting services; if an accident occurs, then you

ABSTRACT HOME MAY 2016 w w w . a mg t t . co m

will be responsible for the damages.

3

Shop around before making a final decision. If the contractor was suggested by a friend, ask if the service was efficient and up to par. Seek recommendations from friends and neighbors who have had work done on their homes

5

Before making final payment upon completion of the job, inspect the area and ensure that you are totally satisfied with the final product. If any changes need to done, advise the contractor as soon as possible. It is also advisable to keep the contract and blueprint at hand for easy reference, in the event that this happens.

Different Ways To Decorate Your Dining-Room Table 3

W

hether you’re hosting a casual bridal shower or a sophisticated dinner-party, the right dining-room and dining-room table setting could really spruce up the table and by extension the room. The right mix of flowers, utensils and food items can add to the mood and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. As we are nearing the season of parties, here are a few table-setting decorations that you can use when setting the table.

Include natural elements to add more depth to the room. Remember the diningroom should be inviting. Gather up things you find in nature, like plants, faux birds, fruit, decorative eggs, moss, rocks, nests and flowers.

4

Don’t forget napkins, cloth or paper, tablecloths, place mats, or fabric for your table if you so choose. Your table can also be decorated by following certain themes. Examples of these are:

1

Mix and match dishes. If your table only has white dishes, mix-in a couple of patterned dishes and lay them out nicely. Adorn them with several utensils such as spoons and forks and lay them out according to the occasion.

2 6

Have various pretty containers out on the table

1 such as a tea-pot or sugar and milk containers. These can also include baskets, wood and ceramic bowls, flower pots, urns, books, pedestals, cloches, glass domes, cake plates or candle sticks.

ABSTRACT HOME MAY 2016 w w w . a mg t t . co m

Ocean theme- Seashells can function as flower vases or decorative centre-pieces and because this presents a casual setting, plastic utensils can be used such as plates and forks.

2

Breezy-spring theme. This theme uses a lot of flowers to see the idea of a sunny, breezy

feel and it presents a casual yet stylish mix to any party. Mix upscale elements with downhome details such as unique flowerpots but plastic utensils. The utensils can be patterned to keep the sophisticated touch.

3

Banana-table runner. Add a cheerful touch to the table with a patchwork-style table-cloth that is both chic and offers a ‘homey’ feel. It makes a great out-door table-setting and is especially useful if hosting a family lunch as the patchwork style tablecloth adds that element of being home. Flowers can be added to give an extra touch.

4

Outdoor oasis. This is the perfect setting for bamboo furniture. A giant umbrella shields party guests from the blazing afternoon sun, and hanging lanterns will illuminate the table come nightfall.

Setting Realistic Job Targets

ealistic job targets are different for everyone. It depends on your needs, goals, and objectives, both yours and those of your family members. Setting realistic targets requires that you be honest and don’t lie to yourself. These targets require that you research and analyze where you are now and where you would like to be. Setting targets can give you greater clarity and help you focus on the right now. You should focus your job targets by thinking about your personal interests and aspirations. Consider where you would like to be in 5 or 10 years, whether you would like to be your own boss, or have children. Ask yourself questions such as; is a new career right for me? Is it what I would like to do for the rest of my life? Would I like a new career, but in the same company? Is happiness more important than how much I earn? Am I making enough to support my family? Is this my dream job? You must answer 8

these questions in order to make a change that would be realistic. Targets are often based on your skills. During time spent on the job you have gained skills and even day to day experiences that have provided opportunities for learning. You need to use the skills and knowledge that you have acquired and put them into perspective. Review your work history and identify tasks you enjoy performing as well as the ones you hate. Think about what you are doing now and how you feel about it. Remember at all times to be realistic. Setting realistic job targets is just like setting goals; they must be s.m.a.r.t, which stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time related. Being specific means that you must know what your target is and exactly what you are aiming for. You should then utilize the strength of your imagination to set direction to action that will empower you to achieve your targets. If you would like to own your company envision yourself

ABSTRACT HOME MAY 2016 w w w . a mg t t . co m

owning it. Targets must be measurable. There should be something which tells you if you are moving forward. Create a timeline which will indicate what stage you have reached. In this way you will be able to identify where you need to go. Promotions, recognition, increased customers and increased sales are other ways of measuring targets. When you set a target you have to be able to go after it, you must think of all the possibilities that can come out of the process. At the same time you must know if you can achieve it or

not, that’s why targets must be achievable. Achievable targets are the ones that can be realized in a given period of time. Don’t aim too high or aim for unrealistic things that you cannot achieve. It can be frustrating to set a target that you are unable to realize in a given time. Make sure that your targets are realistic so that you would not have wasted time on something that was not achieved. Time is the deciding factor in targets. It is important to have plans and timeframes on how to achieve targets. Follow these plans to make sure that you are always on track. Monitor daily achievements to see if you are on target, always give yourself feedback on the short term tactics that you have used to accomplish them. You should use specific timeframes which you can follow until you have reached your target. With this information on setting realistic goals you should be able to go forth and grab the bull by its horns.

KITCHEN

T

Useful Tips When Purchasing A Refrigerator

he yuletide season brings with it lots of Christmas shopping, which often includes replacing old furniture with new ones. Furniture and department stores boast a more significant increase in sales during this period than any other during the year. Refrigerators, washing machines and furniture are the items most commonly purchased and it is easy for buyers to choose items based on their look and design rather than their benefits. Since refrigerators, especially, are very costly and are a necessity in many households, there are certain things that all consumers should look for when purchasing these. Size- Check the space allotted for the fridge before purchasing. Remember you can’t fit a square peg into a round hole. Measuring the space in your kitchen is a good way to know the exact size of fridge you need to buy. Also, 16

Checking the interior of the fridge- There are a lot of models and each one has a specific use. Know what you will be storing and where: vegetables secured in the crisper while eggs stored in the egg tray. What takes priority in the fridge? Is it the dairy products or the water bottles? Answering these questions makes your choice easier. Consider the amount of space or storage that you need.

if you purchase an overly large refrigerator, it may, in most instances, remain empty, and it will only occupy kitchen space and increase purchase and energy costs. Type- Consider the kind of refrigerator you want: top and bottom freezer fridges, one door or two door fridges or fridges with separate drawers at the bottom.

ABSTRACT HOME MAY 2016 w w w . a mg t t . co m

Each fridge has different designs and classifications specific to each model. The design is a matter of preference and convenience but always consider installation limitations when choosing a fridge since clearances may vary. What about the no frost and/or self cleaning feature? These can come in handy for the active family where both parents work.

Energy efficiency- It is important to choose a fridge that has a high stars rating. You can find the ratings at the back part of the fridge, usually located on a yellow piece of paper. Checking this will give you enough information regarding how much energy the fridge consumes, helping you save energy costs. Remember additional features can cause the fridge to consume more electricity, therefore only necessities should be considered when purchasing a refrigerator.

Try Making Mom One Of These Fantastic Fruit Recipes

T

here are few truly feel good foods that do not have some incorporation of fruit or other. Fruit flavors range from tangy to sweet and the health benefits associated with fruits make them a great choice for addition to recipes. Check these recipes as proof.

Continue boiling until fine, soft threads form, 270 degrees F (135 degrees C). Stir in the mango pulp, add the saffron threads, if desired, and boil until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Pour cooked jam into sterilized jars and seal according to canning directions.

Eight Important Things To Do Before Your Wedding

feeling like they’re in the loop, and they’ll also put the event into their mental datebooks. Plus, it’ll give you and your guy a little direction as you start planning.

to reach a consensus amicably. Make sure that wherever you choose is reasonably within budgets. Too many people focus on the wedding and not what is to come for the marriage.

Resize Your Ring Your stunning sparkler is perfect in every way, except for the wiggle room (or maybe it’s a little tight and turning your fingertip a not-so-Tiffany-blue). Get it resized ASAP—after all, you’ll be showing it to everyone and the last thing you want is to lose the thing an hour after you get it. The process can take just a few hours or, at most, a few days.

Visualize A Guest List Before you even begin the venue search, nail down this magic number. Planners want to how many people you’re inviting so they can pair you with spaces (ballrooms, tents, etc.) that can accommodate head count. Packages are also priced in ranges based on guest minimums, so this will help you with the next step: budgeting.

Pick A Date After “congratulations” and “let me see your ring,” here’s the first thing people will ask: “When’s the wedding?” Your answer doesn’t have to be true, but it should be agreed upon and rehearsed by you and your boo. It’ll save you lots of headaches if the two of you come up with a vague-yet-specific answer, like “We’re shooting for early 2017” or Just before next Christmas. People appreciate

Create A Budget And Save It’s easy to get carried away planning for the happiest day of your life, but ask yourself, do you want to be paying for the wedding years after the honeymoon, or would you rather go house hunting?

Register with a Strategy Registering for wedding gifts is often a long and grueling process. But it can also be fun! After all, you're essentially creating a giant gift wish list. To keep from feeling overwhelmed by all the choices in the store, do some preliminary research online with your boo and preview items before you go. If your fiancé doesn't know much about fine china or kitchen electrics, it's OK to take your mom or maid of honor to help you register for these items instead. Your spouse-to-be will probably be a lot more opinionated when it comes to registering for their specific type of gifts.

Spend Time with Other Couples Nothing is better than taking a night off from wedding planning and spending some quality time with your friends. Sched-

ule a BYOB game night, make your famous onion dip and organize a competitive girls vs. boys game of Catchphrase. Or, host a themed potluck dinner and have guests bring their favorite Italian, Southern or Mexican dish (you get the idea). More importantly, feed off the energy of the other couples. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad. Watch them and learn because your marriage is around the corner and you want it to be lasting. Take Care of Yourself Even though you're on your way to being a full-time bride/ groom; don't give up on all of your extracurricular activities. Continue doing what you love and what makes you sane. Try your best to stay organized, and make lists of responsibilities so you can stay on top of deadlines and goals. Focus on one interest at a time. Keep fit and don’t stop going to the gym because you are caught up in the euphoria. If you haven’t been working out, start. The earlier the better since you want to look perfect in your wedding attire.

FAMILY

E

Five Important Family Rules

very home should have its own set of family rules. Family rules simplify explanations, clarify expectations, and create a safe environment for your children and their friends. It is therefore a necessity to have these ‘commandments’ become a fixture in your home. Some people even have their family rules posted on their refrigerators. No matter how you share it, be sure to carefully decide which rules you would like to govern your house by. With that said, ask your children to contribute to the family rules too. Homes should not involve dictatorship. After all, when working with young people; if you say it, it can be ignored or challenged, if they say it, it becomes the gospel truth. Above all, make time to review the list regularly and update as needed. These reviews should be done during times of peace, not just when a rule is being broken. It is im22

when you will be home. Then do what you said you would do! Remember the Mom Test: If you wouldn’t say it, do it, or suggest it with Mom standing next to you – think twice.

portant to instill these values and rules at every available moment. Treat yourself and others with respect: The Golden Rule applies first and foremost in our family. For example; no put downs, yelling, hitting. kicking, pinching, name-calling. This applies to what you say to others and what you say

to yourself in the mirror! Say please, thank you, sorry, you’re welcome, and excuse me when warranted. Ask permission before you go out somewhere: First, ask your parents if you can go. Be sure to tell parents or whoever is in charge who you will be with, where you are going, how you can be contacted, and

Clean up after yourself: Don’t be the mother or father who trails after his/her kids, picking up after them. Get your kids accustomed to picking up after themselves from toddlerhood. Then, start assigning chores to give them a sense of responsibility. You will be proud of your children’s dedication to cleanliness and they will grow up to be well-adjusted. Remember Family First: There will be times when your children’s peers try to draw them away. Let them know that there should be a balance. Teach them the importance of family so they would know family is the ultimate priority.

WARDROBE

POWDER ROOM

Powder Room Essentials

P

owder rooms are becoming increasingly popular in Trinidad and Tobago. They're often found on the main floor of the home and are used as a secondary bathroom. They are usually small and rarely have a bathtub or shower, but do have a sink and toilet. Powder rooms are often frequented by guests and for those enough fortunate to possess a powder room, here are some essentials it should have. Guest Towels – There's no need to have large towels in a powder room but make sure there are plenty of guest towels so people have a place to dry their hands. Some people like to have fancy towels but make sure they're not so fancy that people feel uncomfortable using them. Scented Air Refresher – This can take the form of candles (for ambiance) or one of the many plug-ins available. A spray freshener is also a plus – after all, there is a toilet in the room. Liquid Hand Soap – Quality liquid hand soap is a must for any bathroom. It is best to have it in a pretty jar as it will be practical while also contributing to the décor. Once placed in the right spot soap jars can make a pretty accent piece. Hand Lotion – No matter how

good the soap, washing hands will dry them out. Luxury hand cream will leave the right effect on guests who visit the powder room. Bin – People don’t have wastepaper baskets in corners of their living room and entertainment spaces. Guests shouldn’t have to walk in and out of the kitchen when they have to throw something away. Your second bathroom is the ideal place for a bin. There, they can get rid of their trash and clean up at the same time. Mirror – Mirrors are important in any bathroom and a powder room is no exception. It's a great place for guests (and residents) to take a quick last look before leaving the house, but it also helps make the tiny room look larger. Tray – Put all the small items on a pretty tray to keep them organized. Kleenex, Cotton Swabs and TP – It's always a good idea to have these extras in a powder room. Try to get a Kleenex box cover that matches the room and put some of the swabs in a little cup (a silver mint julep cup or a tiny crystal glass is always nice). Put a few extra rolls of toilet paper in an attractive container like a clear glass cylinder vase.

Four Fashion Tips For Moms

W

hether you have a new-born, a toddler, or older children; the one common element that all moms share is an overwhelming lack of time. If on top of raising children you're juggling a career, chances are you barely have time to breathe and fashion/style can very easily fall by the wayside. Who has time to think about fashion you might ask? The good news is that looking great is possible despite the draining schedule and numerous demands on your time. Follow these 5 easy tips to look and feel great, and free yourself up to be a beautiful, happy mom!

1

Fit is still important! Even if you are carrying some post-pregnancy weight that you plan to lose soon, don't let drowning yourself in clothes that are too large be the solution. Too much fabric can actually make you look heavier. Instead, opt for clothes that skim your shape without being too form-fitting.

2

Buy/wear fabrics that breathe well, are comfortable and most importantly, are washable. Cotton tunics, straight or boot cut jeans, light dresses and cardigans are excellent choices for stylish w w w . a m g tt. c o m

mom's wardrobe. Matte-jersey, particularly a heavier-weight jersey, is a fantastic choice for both at home and going out. A jersey dress for example, is easy to dress up, layer over and easy to move around in. It's also relatively inexpensive!

3

Choose comfortable but stylish footwear. Avoid plain, ratty sneakers and go for chic ballet flats, trendy sneakers, and gladiator flats if you're in warm weather. Look for brands which offer fashionable shoes with comfort soles. If you're uncomfortable giving up heels altogether, go with a one or two-inch platform slide or low pumps, but be sure that the heel height is no more than 2" to avoid giving yourself lower-back pain.

4

Use accessories to create unique and stylish looks without investing a lot of money. Scarves, belts, handbags, hats and of course, jewelry are all great ways to keep your look trendy without spending too much money. And this year's bold jewelry and bright colors will make it easy to mix up your look with minimal effort. Loosely drape a thin bright scarf over a neutral t-shirt and dark jeans and you'll get through the day in style! MAY 2016

Important Fluids To Include In Your Diet

T

here are many options for what to drink, but without a doubt, water is the best choice: It's calorie-free, and it's as easy to find as the nearest tap. After plain water, there are some other drinks which do pose significant health benefits. Of course, there are pros and cons to drinking these beverages, so drink them in moderation. Green tea contains a rich concentration of flavonoids and polyphenols, natural antioxidants that may protect cells from carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and inhibit tumor growth by helping to neutralize free radicals in the body. The tea's antioxidants may also guard against heart disease by relaxing blood vessels, inhibiting the formation of blood clots that trigger heart attacks and strokes. Green tea also contains fluoride, which strengthens teeth; the flavonoids may build up bones as well, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and tooth decay. Soy milk contains soluble fiber and soy protein, which lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and triglycerides, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. If you're drinking it instead of cow's milk, buy soy milk fortified with calcium and vitamins A and D. One caveat: Soy contains phytoestrogens, which 24

may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about drinking soy milk if you have a family history of the disease or have had it yourself. Research suggests that the same antibacterial properties present in cranberry juice that fight off urinary tract infections may also protect against periodontal disease. Experts theorize that a component of the juice called nondialysable material (NDM) inhibits bacteria from sticking to the gums. Many nutritionists are wary of fruit juices because of their sugar content, so limit your intake to no more than one glass (6 to 8 ounces) daily. The high potassium and low sodium content of coconut water has a nutrient profile shown to help lower high blood pressure. Plus, because it is very low in fat, you can drink as much as you can without worrying about ingesting a lot of fattening agents. Also, coconut water has anti-viral and anti-fungal properties that can help you steer clear of these diseases. It has more hydrating properties than the average tap water so drinking it can certainly help your digestion well. Thus, you’ll be able to absorb food nutrients better and have easier bowel time when you drink it.

Safe Driving Tips

T

he worst thing about most drivers is the fact that they all think they are the greatest drivers the world has seen. Therefore, they approach driving with overconfidence and a lack of attention to care. Our advice is, if you want to stay alive, follow driving laws and regulations and be extremely vigilant. Plus, there are some additional tips below. • Plan your trips ahead of time. Decide what time to leave and which roads to take. Try to avoid heavy traffic, poor weather and highspeed areas. • Wear your safety belt—and wear it correctly. (It should go over your shoulder and across your lap.) • Drive at the speed limit. It’s unsafe to drive too fast or too slow. • Be alert! Pay attention to traffic at all times. • Keep enough distance between you and the car in front of you. • Be extra careful at intersections. Use your turn signals and remember to look around you for people and other cars. • Check your blind spot when changing lanes or backing up.

26

• When you take a new medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist about side effects. Many medicines may affect your driving even when you feel fine. • If your medicine makes you dizzy or drowsy, talk to your doctor to find out ways to take your medicine so it doesn’t affect your driving. • Never drink and drive. • Never drive when you feel angry or tired. If you start to feel tired, stop your car somewhere safe. • Take a break until you feel more alert. • Never eat, drink or use a cell phone while driving. • If you don’t see well in the dark, try not to drive at night or during storms. These tips can be the difference between life and death, so be sure to pay attention to them. Safe driving guys.

Four Steps To Provide Better Dental Care For Your Pets

O

ne of the most important things an owner can do to promote a healthy and lengthy long life for their pets is to provide proper oral care. It may seem like a far-fetched idea that pets may need to visit dentists or attend scheduled check-ups, but all these things help to increase the life-span of a dog or cat. Learning to spot deficiencies can be the key in curbing the problem of bad oral care, along with regular, scheduled visits with a veterinarian. Follow these steps below in order to keep your pet’s dental care in check.

1

Be on the lookout for any signs of dental problems. These can include bad breath, disfigured and discoloured gums and teeth, irritability from dogs or cats or pets pawing at their faces. These are all signs that there may be a problem with your pet’s dental care.

2

Maintain regular veterinarian visits. Be sure to uphold scheduled visits with the vet so that he/she might be able to pick up on any problems that he can work on resolving as soon as possible. Check-ups, which should include dental exams, can help to prevent your pets from getting dental problems.

3

Brush your pet’s teethAlthough easier said than done, brushing your pet’s teeth is one of the best ways to provide maximum health care for your pet’s teeth. Start when they are younger so that they can learn to tolerate the brushing of their teeth. The first time should involve you using your finger, and gently wiping the teeth’s surface. It is advised that you soak your finger with a food that your pets like to eat. Gradually, move from your finger, to a soft cloth or gauze wrapped around your finger to a special toothbrush and toothpaste made for pets. Recently, there has been a new alternative to brushing your pet’s teeth, which involves you spraying a liquid into your pet’s mouth to curb bad-breath and other dental problems. But its benefits have not been confirmed by noted veterinarians.

4

Similar to the spray that can help with dental care, consider foods that can help maintain a healthy mouth. Talk to your veterinarian about these foods or do your own research on which pet foods can give your dog or cat the best oral care. Be sure to monitor the effects of these on your pet’s mouth, in order to gauge their effectiveness.

TRAVEL

Making The Most Of Traveling With Children

T

raveling with children will be a memorable event – the question is “What kind?” Your chances of a lifetime memory you will cherish increase significantly with some advance communication and preparation. Make children a part of the trip by letting them help you plan. Your children will enjoy the trip more if they feel they have some say in the agenda. Get books from the library, or do an Internet search, on the area you plan to visit. Give them some options of what to do and actually use some of their suggestions. Who knows? You may enjoy their suggestions more than you think. Here is a guide to vacationing with children, using the 5 steps: 1. Design your vision. The first step to happy memories is good communication. Start scheduling family meetings to plan the trip – the earlier the better. At the first meeting, ask each member of the family to describe what he or she would like to have in order to have a wildly successful vacation. It’s a great idea to put some structure into this discussion. Use a flip chart and have family members take turns recording answers. Subsequent meetings can be used to work out each of the next steps. 2. Eliminate your obstacles. Mark Twain is credited with saying “Progress starts with the truth.” Certainly that applies in this situation. For example, some teens simply do not think its “cool” to travel with mom and dad. If you want your teens to enjoy their travel experience, make 28

sure you understand what they like and dislike. With young children, keep in mind “less is more.” A swim in the hotel pool may be a much better choice than another two hours at the theme park. 3. Commit your time. There could be several issues here. If your teens are working, they may resent having to miss work – or they may be delighted. In either case, find out their preferences, and see what you can do to accommodate them without jeopardizing your own needs. One of the issues likely to come up is the daily travel schedule itself. Young children need naps; teens may want to sleep late, while parents relish the idea of “getting an early start.” Compromise is probably the best solution here. 4. Select your tools Growing up on a farm in Trinidad, one of the things my daddy taught me was “Half of any job is having the right tool.” While you may think it’s ridiculous to think about “tools” for a vacation, it is really essential. For example, if it is impossible to reach a compromise about the music on the car CD player, headphones for individual players could be a godsend! Tools can also include systems for the way you handle situations. One of the major keys to success in organizing any activity is focusing on individual strengths. If one child is particularly adept at photography, make them the official family photographer, while another might be a great navigator.

5. Maintain your success At the end of each day, take a few minutes for a “Check-In” session. What was the best thing that happened that day? Why? How can we make sure we have more like it? What didn’t work? Why? How can we eliminate the situation in the future? Make sure you use the following process at the end of the vacation – make some notes and make sure to document changes as you go along. Here are some general tips you can use to ensure a great vacation: • Choose age appropriate destinations. This doesn’t mean every trip has to involve a theme park or sports event; it simply means keep the trip’s educational value at a level they can comprehend and appreciate. If your children’s ages span a wide range, have at least one activity geared to each child. Picking a hotel with a pool can make a big difference! • Lay the ground rules early. Before you even leave the house, make sure your children know what is and isn’t acceptable behavior on the road. As elementary as this may seem, if you don’t tell your children what you expect, how can they oblige? • Let the children pack their own suitcases as much as possible. Make sure each child has a small carry-on bag for which they are responsible. Include things they can do on the road or in the air--a walkman and tapes, comic books, handheld

video games, etc. • Decide ahead of time about seating arrangements and make contingency plans in case requested seats are not available. • Establish a meeting place at each stop. Nothing could be worse that having a child get lost in an unfamiliar environment. Whenever you visit a location, identify a spot where the family can meet if you happen to get separated, or carry cell phones.. • Carry current photos of your children. That way others can help you locate your lost child. If your child can tell time, make sure they take a watch! • Pack a first aid kit. Face it. Kids will be kids. That means scraped knees, bug bites, and cuts and bruises. When traveling with children, always keep a first aid kit handy. • Check for travel specials for children. Pre-planning can save you lots of money. Many airlines, restaurants, and hotels offer discounts for children, whether it’s a "kids stay or eat free" deal or a "half-off children’s rate.” Let Internet-savvy children put their mouse to work for a happier vacation. The most important thing to remember – flexibility. Traveling with children of any age is always a challenge. Spend more time enjoying the precious memories you will be creating and less time fretting over what could go wrong. Keep your sense of humor in full swing and happy traveling.
