ET&T CELEBRITY MOMS SHARE NEWS SAVVY PARENTING ADVICE Written by Jordhache

C

elebrities have tremendous influence over their followers. Mothers are even more influential! We recently chatted with some of our local celebrity moms to get some of their proven ‘mummy strategies’. Soca entertainer Jo Jo; gospel artiste Nisa Nora; radio personality Whitney Husbands; TV news anchor Francesca Hawkins, Jamoo entertainer Marge Blackman and politician Ayanna Webster Roy all shared on various aspects of motherhood:

Be open to advice Listen to your own parents/guardians/ mentors. They have done this before with you so they can definitely give you some advice for your own. Even if they are not the best example they can teach you. – Jo Jo Whitney Husbands

for her and when I put money into her account, most of the times she is with me and she is only 16 months. I explain to her why I am doing this. It’s all about leading by example. – Whitney Husbands

Blackman

Teach them morals and values! I used to go to church - not often- but since having my daughter I make it mandatory that I attend church every Sunday. Sometimes I miss, but I want her to experience church at that early age. – Whitney Husbands

Lead by example No one is perfect, but be careful of how you express yourself in front of your kids. They are like sponges, soaking up everything. Always be that ‘good example’ they need to mould their little minds in the right way. – Jo Jo I was horrible with saving and I wish that I did not splurge the money that I did. Since my daughter was in my belly I started saving. I opened an account

Let them know their rights, but more importantly let them understand the responsibilities that go hand in hand with rights. Teach them that actions have consequences and always enforce rules. – Ayanna Webster Roy

Build healthy relationships TALK TO YOUR KIDS...no one spoke to me. As an adult I see the value in a conversation... especially the uncomfortable ones. I’m soundly convinced that I would have made better decisions had I gotten more than ah "good morning" from my guardians. Kids need to know that the platform is open to them beyond their basic needs in the form of open, earnest, And REAL conversations with them. – Nisa Nora Build a relationship with your child that allows them to be open and honest with you. That way it becomes easy for them to come to you for advice or open up about what is going on in their lives. Remember to love each child the way in which he or she should be loved as no two children are the same. – Ayanna Webster Roy

Take care of yourself It is sometimes perceived that a mother should forget herself and only take care of her children and make her needs and her wants secondary. I have learnt that you have to take care of yourself first. You have to take care of your children as well - emotionally, physically, financially and socially, but you also should do that for yourself first. The happier you are and the more you love yourself, the more you are going to love your children and this is not just for your children alone. In any relationship this is the approach that anyone should have. – Marge

Budget! I think most mothers are amazing home economists and are the ones who make every sacrifice in the world possible to make sure the children are in the best possible circumstances. There are the obvious tips to save on the budget, such as home cooked food and snacks for example. Overall I’d say raising

children in hard times is more about an approach than saving on one item or another. By this I mean, encouraging children to enjoy joy the simple things, natural fun, friendships, sharing and giving and helping. All this is free and ultimately makes for happier children. – Francesca Hawkins We are sure that these tips have been helpful! In the words of Whitney Husbands remember that “we can give so many tips but you have to know how YOU want to see your child develop into an amazing woman or a fantastic man on this earth.”

TT FILM FESTIVAL TO SCREEN BIM AT WE BEAT

F

orty-four years since its first release, the highly acclaimed local film Bim, will screen once again at We Beat’s We Film Night, on Wednesday 06 June 2018, at 7pm. The free screening, at the St James Amphitheatre, is presented by the trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) in partnership with the St James Community Improvement Committee and ttff's official technical partner North Eleven Projections. Described as “the best T&T film ever made” by film critic B.C Pires, Bim is revered as a West Indian cult classic of Caribbean Cinema. The script was written by local playwright and newspaper journalist, Raoul Pantin and co-produced by Susanne Nunez, wife of the director, Hugh A. Robertson. Bim tells the story of Bheem Singh, who is sent to live with his 2

aunt in Port of Spain. Bullied at school and abused at home, he runs away and begins a life of petty crime. After returning to the countryside—and taking a new name, Bim—he becomes leader of the sugar workers, and eventually leader of the colony’s opposition party. It isn’t long, however, before his violent past catches up

with him. The role of Bim is played by Ralph Maraj, a politician, playwright and actor, of both stage and screen. Music for the film was written by the late Andre Tanker who worked with some of the country’s best musicians to fuse African and Indian rhythms. Shot a decade after our coun-

try’s independence, Bim did not open to much fanfare in 1975. However, it was shown at the United States Virgin Islands Film Festival in St Thomas in 1975 and at the CARIFESTA Film Festival in Jamaica and Los Angeles Film Festival, both in 1976. Bruce Paddington, founder and festival director of the ttff described the film as "one of the most important films to be produced in Trinidad and Tobago and ... one of the classics of Caribbean cinema". Bim screens on Wednesday 06 June, 7pm, at the St James Amphitheatre, next door to the St James Police Station on the Western Main Road. Rated PG, admission is free and drinks and refreshments will be on Sale. Patrons should feel free to bring their own blankets and mats.

BEAUTY, BRAINS & BUSINESS Written by Dr. Alicia Martin

Q

ueen speaks to female royalty or excellence within a particular field. There are some women who have demonstrated the capacity to reign over all others in the realm of beauty, education and business. One such Queen is 1986 Ms. World winner, Mrs. Giselle Jeanne-Marie Laronde-West who at just 23 years topped a field of beauties including then aspiring actress Halle Berry, captivating the attention of the entire world. Giselle would later apply her grace and intelligence to a thriving career in PR, Communications and Marketing, Customer Service and Hospitality. This Queen would eventually usher two boys into the world by natural birth, adding motherhood to the exquisite blend she was creating. She describes her journey into motherhood as wonderful, “I cherished my moments with my babies, breast-feeding them both and loving the moments when I had to. I loved the quiet moments and valued the time getting to know them and their personalities… I did everything with them and tried not to miss a play, football match or swim or polo meets. They were both athletes and there was much dropping and picking up, but most times I enjoyed staying to see them perform in whatever they did.” She attributes her ability to synergize her roles as career woman and mother to the buffer provided by her husband and the accessibility of quality caretakers both within and outside of the family, “I never let becoming a parent complicate my career. Having a good support system in place is of course what made it easier. We need to make sure we have good baby sitters, grandmothers who are willing to baby sit and supportive husbands who would share all the duties; housework, baby chores, cooking, extra-curricular activities etcetera.” Some women lament the challenges which motherhood poses to their physical beauty; their personal maintenance and the way they generally feel about themselves. Comments 4

like “I used to be a hot number until I had them” or “those were my days” are not rare. However Giselle offers a perspective on beauty which positions inner beauty as paramount while at the same time prioritizing the needs of the child, “my beauty sits within and if my hair was disheveled or uncombed because I was busy dealing with the children, then so be it. It was easy to fix myself up quickly to go to work because I did not get caught up in trying to look overly glamourous all the time. So going from Pampers to a meeting room or social event, was

ET&T • MAY, 2018 • www.amgtt.com

never a challenge.” Mrs. Laronde-West went on to emphasize how the knowledge of the well-being and safety of her children allowed her to function better on the job, in a sense showing how the role of the mother can actually complement one’s career as opposed to being a liability, Also, once I was neat and tidy and I was sure my children were happy and satisfied I could go to work and get things done because I was not worrying about them all day,” she stated. While Giselle admits that maintaining a steady exercise routine was a bit difficult, she alludes to the fact that sometimes the issue revolves around time management and not so much parenting, “Getting time to properly exercise proved a challenge when they were younger, but I realize that it was not just them, sometimes my job or other career commitments also hindered my time for exercise…Then again, that should not be an excuse. Now that they are grown boys, I should make sure I get the time to exercise so that I

sustain my outer beauty now that am in my twilight years.” she says while laughing. Mrs. Laronde West’s accomplishments were widely celebrated by Trinidad and Tobago. Then British West Indies Airways (BWIA) named a plane in her honour. She is the recipient of the Chaconia medal and a special issue of postage stamps was also issued in her name. Three decades after these accolades, she says that she does not yearn to be celebrated in an elaborate way by her sons for Mother’s day. “As long as I hear from both my sons on this day am happy… no need for a big celebration. They bring joy to my world.” Apart from her title, her reign, her travels, the opportunities, her career and life’s experiences, motherhood has taught her priceless lessons. She has learnt in her words: “to be patient; that true love is really unconditional, that nothing is worth more than making sure your children have a good upbringing, a good fun life and are happy during their formative years.”

or many of us, mothers hold a very special place in our hearts. More so, they are the epitome of comfort, love and compassion and they offer it freely exactly when it most needed. The stories recalled by multiple Olympic medallist Richard Thompson, former T&T football captain Kenwyne Jones and former Soca Warrior turned ESPN analyst Shaka Hislop serve as reminders that no matter how old you are, a mother’s presence and support will always offer a level of comfort only she can provide.

Richard Thompson Of the many memorable moments I have with my Mother, there’s a recent one that is dear to me. In January of this year, I had hip surgery in Louisiana and I stayed there for just over two months’ post-operation to do my rehabilitation. My wife stayed with me for the first two weeks, then had to return to Florida for our son to get back to school. Once she left, my Mom and Dad came up to help as there was very little I could do for myself initially. Dad stayed for two weeks then had to get back to Trinidad. It was just Mummy and I from there and every morning I woke up to cooked breakfast, came back from rehab with lunch on the table, had my laundry done and folded, and we watched Family Feud every night as she loves the GSN. My wife has taken over many of these 6

responsibilities in my adult life, but it felt special to relive my old days with Mummy and sharing this quality time with her really helped me to overcome a difficult time. Once a mother, forever a mother, and there’s no question that she’ll always be here for me when I need her. This is why she’ll forever be special to me. Kenwyne Jones There are so many instances with my mom that I deem memorable… Particularly when I think back of all the sacrifices she made for her kids. She would make sure to do whatever it took to ensure we were safe and happy. She was also the type of mom who always comforted us when we needed it the most. Most of all I think the values she made sure to instill in us is something that will forever live on in all her children. She is definitely a great, loving example of what a great mother is. Shaka Hislop Despite having many memories with my mom, the one that stands out to me the most dates all the way back to 2005. It was the day before the last game of the season and I was playing for Portsmouth at the time. I got the news that my contract would not be renewed even though I was previously informed that it would have been by one of the directors. The news completely crushed me. Here I was married with four kids and out of a job. I felt like giving up. Fortunately enough, that same day mom and dad were coming to visit me in England. Needless to say when she reached I was in an awful mood and possibly at my lowest point. Yet despite all this, mom was able to break through all those negative emotions and comforted me in a way only my mother can. She helped to remind me what was important, refocus on what truly mattered and regain

a sense of optimism. Her presence alone was all I needed for my sprits to be lifted. By the time she left, I was in a much better place and was able to get my emotions together. My optimism paid off as a year later as I was playing for West Ham United and at the

World Cup representing Trinidad and Tobago. I guess the saying is right “Mother knows best” Can you recall a special moment with your mom? Visit our website www.amgtt.com and share it with us. Shaka his mom and dad

FRIEND SAYS MARGOT KIDDER HAD UNUSUAL WISH FOR HER REMAINS Friends are recalling the life of Margot Kidder, who died April 13th at age 69 in her home in Livingston. The actress was best known for playing Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve's "Superman." Her acting career slowed after a public breakdown in the mid-1990s, and she became an activist for progressive causes and mental health awareness. She was especially fond of animals, and was actively involved with the Stafford Animal Shelter in Livingston. They posted a memorial to her on Monday, saying, "May you always be surrounded by dogs. We will miss you Margie!" Writer and indie film director Ted Geoghe-

gan posted on Twitter, saying he knew Margaret well and that she had an unusual request for her body. "Margot lived at the foot of Canyon Mountain, right outside of Livingston. Like much of Montana, the area was filled with wolves. But instead of fearing them, Margot loved them," Geoghegan writes. "She left meat out for the wolves so she could watch them come down the mountain and eat from the safety of her home. ... She'd asked her closest friends - if they stopped by her place and found her dead - to tell no one, place her naked body in a bedsheet, drag it up Canyon Mountain, and leave her for her other friends, the wolves." Geoghegan says he was sad to hear of her passing before cheekily adding. "I would have dragged you up the hill."

ET&T MODEL MANIA Name: Afiya Lamont Age: 21 Hometown: Mt Lambert Hobbies: Nature, Singing, The Arts and Sports. Afiya Lamont has that natural model essence which enables her to pull off various looks with minimal effort. That does not mean she isn’t a hard worker. The young fashionista has been working on her craft ever since her late start only two years ago. In that period, she has made her way into the frames of esteemed photographers such as Sancho Francisco, Jimmyontherun101, Itanie Gordon and Jianmin Huang. Ms. Lamont balances her modeling duties with her studies and a customer service job. Her long term goal is to become a graphic designer and she is currently pursuing Visual Communication Design at UTT in order to achieve that. Afiya definitely has her head on, but she is no slouch when it comes to her fashion/style game as well. When asked about her favourite designers she stated, “Internationally it will be CoCo Chanel… this lady made me fall in love with wearing a black dress with red lip. Locally, it will be Robert Anthony Young (The Cloth) because I love hand painted work and am also a big fan of tribal prints which lots of his work contains.” Afiya admits that she doesn’t get angry or flustered easily, but she is a stickler for punctuality. Plus, she constantly strives for perfection and is not inclined to settle for less. This attention to detail is evident when she shows off her singing abilities. She can belt out notes with the best of them. With that said, she takes a relatively lax approach to maintaining her looks. She is thankful for good genes and a high metabolism which means she seldom needs to do more than an afternoon walk around the savannah to stay in shape. However, the model says she will soon start a more systematic diet and workout plan as she seeks to amp up her progress. 10 ET&T • MAY, 2018 • www.amgtt.com

ET&T DESTRA TALKS MOTHERHOOD

HOT

I

Written by D. Nandlal

SEAT

nternational soca artiste and self-professed Queen of Bacchanal Destra Garcia took time to share her experiences with motherhood with us. It was clear from start that she enjoys loves being a mother as much as she enjoys being a performer. In this very open and honest interview, she shared with us the joys and challenges she faces on a daily basis, the strategies for overcoming them and more. ET&T: How do you feel about your role as a mother? Destra: The most important role at the moment is motherhood and it has always been a priority growing up. My grandmother did not have an easy life, but she made sure to give her kids everything they needed… NOT wanted. Love always existed within our household. As for my mom, she gave up her chance of having a successful career to raise me and my sibling. She was always reliable and I wanted to do the same for my kid. ET&T: Do you want more children? Destra: Definitely. Actually, I want a house full of kids, but with my demanding schedule it is very difficult to accomplish that. When I was pregnant with Xaiya, I took a year off. I am not sure if I am willing to do that again. However, I do want at least one more and it’s on my mind. ET&T: If you had to send a message out to young moms, what would it be? Destra: Remember your own childhood. Remind yourself what made you happy and sad. Then, aim to raise a better version of yourself. Think of it as a second chance to grow up. If you had awesome parents, great! Do what they did. If you didn’t, be sure to

do the opposite. Always put your children first. This will allow you to have less to regrets. Children also have a way of remembering everything. You hear them recalling a memory when they get old “my mummy use to do this…” make sure when they finish that sentence it’s a good story they are remembering. ET&T: What is the most fulfilling part of being a mother? Destra: Seeing Xai smile. I do try not to spoil her and give her a balance. She’s involved in so many activities, piano, ballet, track… So I started rewarding her when she achieves something. I think this will transcend to the future as I

16 ET&T • MAY, 2018 • www.amgtt.com

believe in the mantra hard work pays off and I want Xai to learn that as well. ET&T: If you had to narrow it down to just one, what is the fondest memory of Xaiya? Destra: Xaiya makes memories every day. But having gone through 18 hours of labour with a natural birth when I met her for the first time I knew it was all worth it. I also remember her first cry sounded like a scale and the doctor turned to me and said “Oh she’s a singer.” She’s definitely her own little person. ET&T: How do you strike that balance between

being an international soca artiste and a mom? Destra: The traveling is the biggest challenge to date. I try not to stay anywhere too long. if I fly out to a nearby country I try to return the same day, although that’s not always possible. The drawback with this is I tend not to see and explore the places I go to perform. It’s a sacrifice for sure, but when you have a child your life belongs to them. When Xaiya goes to school I try to use that time for my errands and responsibilities such as gym, recording etc. Once she’s back home, it is full-on mummy duties. I use this time to listen to her stories. I believe you have to listen

HOT SEAT to your children’s stories despite how repetitive or mundane it might be because that’s how you know what’s happening in their lives. It may be the key helping you discover things that may be happening in their world such as bullying, the character of their friends and more. Listen to your kids and be sure they are comfortable enough to talk to you. ET&T: What’s your dream for your child? Destra: I want her to be the best she can be. I keep saying I don’t want her in entertainment, but yet it seems so much of her talents is of an artistic nature. I want her to be happy. Grow up and have a career she loves like I love mine. Find a man that adores her like how her father adores me and of course realize how much her mom sacrificed for her. But mostly to live her life to the fullest. ET&T: What are mornings like at your home? Destra: Chaotic… I am always the last to go to bed and the first to wake up. I have to make sure her pencils are sharpened, pack away any books she may have left out etc. It is also hard to wake her up in the first place. It takes at least 15 mins to do so. Then she has to watch TV while she’s doing her hair in between saying ‘ouch’ because of how thick her hair is. But despite the chaos, it is fun. That’s why I always try to be around for it. When I am not able to be around, my family steps in. Of course, there are times when Xai says “Mummy I wish you could stay.” But most times she’ll be fine with me leaving and would say things like “Go and mash up the place.” ET&T: What morals and values do you insist on instilling in Xaiya? Destra: Respect has and always will be imperative in our household. As a rule, growing up, the younger needed to listen to the elder. Parents, family, Godparents, teachers etc. I try to teach Xaiya this as well and as I mentioned before the importance of hard work. Also, believing in herself.

It is hard enough being a woman in this world. Lastly, I try to make her understand that as she gets older, she will gain more freedom. For example, she is not allowed to watch any of my performances on YouTube. I try to shield her from things that are not age appropriate and I let her know that this is for her wellbeing. ET&T: Do you ever feel overwhelmed? Destra: Yes. I do. I always feel as if I never have enough time. Between my schedule and Xaiya, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. There are times when she needs me and I am away and I either have to do it virtually or not at all. Also, I am still in therapy for my broken ankle which occurred at a previous performance. This has affected my mobility for sure, but it also affected my personal appearance which means no heels, something I love and makes me feel confident. Some days it is hard battling with all these issues. During these times I try to focus on things that make me strong and when I am alone at home I engage in conversation with God and let everything out. Then once that is over, I pull it back together and move on. I try never to stay in a depressed state. ET&T: What do you wish for yourself this Mother’s day? Destra: Sleep! I wish I could just sleep. Yes. Also, a nice chocolate cake and coconut ice cream! ET&T: Any last words Destra: Yes. Some people spend time trying to figure when it’s time the right time to become a mom. I don’t believe there’s a right time. Before I was pregnant I was extremely career driven. Then it happened and I decided I was going to embrace it. It’s the best job I could ever dream of and I won’t change it for the world. I also want to wish all the hardworking and dedicated mothers out there a very Happy Mother’s Day! Keep up the good work and always be reminded, we are raising the future. www.amgtt.com •
