rinbagonians have already begun to count down the days to Carnival 2012 and pan lovers are also anticipating the start of the season. Arrangers have been contacted and music productions have been happening behind the scenes, amidst the hustle of Christmas shopping. Several bands have started practising while others are pulling out the trailers. One band that will be starting practice early is Solo Harmonites. Administrative manager of the band, Peter Kanhai said “We are starting practice on the 20th December as we are having our annual ‘Christmas in the Panyard’ party on the 18th. We have a new arranger for next year, Mr. Seon Gomez, so we will be starting practice soon.” He said that all bands have challenges but one of the challenges that he is facing is funding. Another band who decided to work with a new arranger is Renegades. Candice Andrews of Renegades Pan Band said that this year they will be using Duvon Stewart as the band’s arranger. She said that the band will begin practising for Panorama on January 3rd and that she only foresees positive vibes from the band for next year. Hunior Hudson, Head of the Executive for WITCO Desperadoes said that the band is always practising but have not begun practising specifically for the Panorama competition for next year. “The band recently returned from Nigeria and we played for the launch of Starlift mas but nothing official has started.” Pedro Martinez of Exodus said that they will begin practice sessions during the second week of January. He also mentioned this country’s first Roman Catholic mas band asked the band to play for them on the road for Carnival next year. “The Catholic band also goes by the name of ‘Exodus’ so they asked us to play for them

but we have not yet decided. As it stands now, we will be in Panorama next year. We have not decided on a song yet but we will be competing. We have no challenges, no obstacles just looking forward to a great season.” Lennox ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe, composer and arranger for Phase II Pan Groove said that he’s not sure when the band will start their practice sessions but that the song is finished and will be released on Boxing Day. “The name of the song is ‘Archbishop of Pan’ and it is a tribute to a very true and dear friend of mine, the late Pat Bishop. It’s something new, it’s different, and it was sung by a religious choir rather than having one person sing it.” As with most bands he said that there is not enough sponsorship awarded to the national instrument and stressed that more attention and support should be given to steelpan, by both the Government and the public. Sharpe was eagerly excited to share some of his plans; he is releasing a C.D entitled ‘A tribute to Sparrow’ which will feature all of Sparrow’s songs using the Percussive Harmonic Instrument (PHI) pan. The album is available in most local record stores.
’m the Trey Songz of Soca,” said Terrin Callender, known in the entertainment fraternity as Suppa Jigga TC, and with his latest endorsement deals, consistency in music and various other projects in the works, the soca star can very well be compared to the R&B crooner. T.C recently signed endorsement deals with Stag and the Converse franchise and is currently a judge on Synergy’s Soca Star, Season 7. But what he is most excited about is the release of his latest hit ‘Action’. ‘Action’ was written and produced by GBM Productions, the same company that produced T.C’s previous hit ‘Speakerboxx’, Machel Montano’s ‘Bend Ova’ and new-comer K.Rich’s track ‘Nothing Less’. He said “the song is about a girl who has a lot of action, you know? The inspiration for the song came from me going to Carnival fetes and seeing how the women express themselves differently.” T.C took a completely viral approach in promoting the track, adding that he wanted to try something different and even admitting that it was a very bold move. He said “the song is a full length song it’s 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Ideally, I would have liked all the radio stations to play it simultaneously but I know that’s not going to happen.” Instead the song played on SLAM 100.5 early in the morning, and T.C visited several radio stations throughout the day to promote the track. He ended the promotional tour
with a performance of the song on Synergy Nights. The song can also be heard on popular video-sharing website YouTube. T.C said that he believes that any publicity is good publicity and intends to work on the brand ‘Suppa Jigga T.C’ in the future. He said that he was very instrumental in getting people to vote for Anya Ayoung-Chee during the Project Runway Competition. He also has a fully sponsored set on SLAM 100.5 in the mornings from 6:00a.m-9:00a.m and is currently a judge on Synergy’s Soca Star as opposed to being the host of the show which he was, for several years. Dale Lutchman friend and current manager of T.C said they developed a relationship prior to him managing T.C. He said “We have known each other for six years and after working more closely together at SLAM, T.C said that he wanted to take it (his career) to the next level, so we did. Pretty soon Stag showed some interest and I was able to make a connection with some people at the Converse store, having worked there prior to SLAM. I’ve actually been asked to manage more people but my focus is on T.C and SLAM. I’m also a project co-ordinator at SLAM 100.5.” Lutchman said that T.C is the future of Soca saying that he has the skills to become a huge international soca artiste. He said “He could become right up there with Bunji and the other artistes, he has that international appeal.”

Big things expected from ‘Trini’ Filmmaker Written by Camille West

urrently completing his Masters in Creative Design Entrepreneurship at the University of the West Indies (U.W.I), local film maker Michael Mooleedhar has already garnered a high level of respect among his peers, in the film-making industry. His short films include ‘Queens of Curepe’, which was his first film and one of his assignments, while completing his Bachelors of Arts in Film at U.W.I, ‘Coolie Pink and Green’, which won the award for Best Short Film in the 2009 Film Festival and ’17 colours and a sitar’ which he co-directed and produced. Mooleedhar has written, directed, produced and edited many of his films, work-
ing with the equally talented and creative Patricia Mohammed, who has directed and produced some of shorts along with Cinematographer Franklyn St. Just. He said that he has intentions of creating feature films, particularly extending the version of
one of his shorts ‘Coolie pink and green’. The content of his movies will continue to be based on Trinidad and Tobago’s culture. He said “This is our culture; this is where we are, so I’ll continue working on films showcasing us. I want to bring out the essence and the soul of a story and to me film helps me do that. No matter the style or the genre, film is the vehicle that brings out the story.” He said that he is still trying to find a voice as a film maker but admires the work of Hollywood Director Quentin Tarantino. He said “I like the way he brings everything together, the way he mixes everything to make it one.” Mooleedhar has plans to release a movie, starring Sean Nebula from ‘Nebula 868’
Local Videographer Kern Rose Plans Huge Breakout Year K
ern Rose is no new face. He’s been around and he understands the ins and outs of the entertainment world. Now, he’s making some very big statements ahead of Carnival 2012 in Trinidad and Tobago and anyone who believes he doesn’t have the gumption to make it all happen, better think again. As one of T&T’s leading video directors, the young creator says he’s about to cause a tumultuous stir in the weeks ahead as he launches a number of things, one of which is something called Fashion Marshon. The name may sound a bit strange, but one opportunity to see inside the mind of Kern Rose would ultimately lead to a greater understanding of his vision. The young entrepreneur is going full speed ahead, launching his very own clothing line which he’ll call Fashion Marshon- the second part of the name being a new sobriquet he’ll give himself as the season ultimately unfolds. “I’m currently in the process of developing the line with popular young urban designer, Fashion Dandy and it’ll be all about the entertainers and other industry peeps,” said

in the lead role, entitled ‘The Cool Boys’. The 30 minute short film has already been completed, with a release date expected to be either before or after Carnival 2012. “The story is about these 3 young men who set-out to have a night of fun in Trinidad but get into trouble so they have to get themselves out of trouble,” he said. Although he intends to develop the film industry in T&T, he admitted that he wants to get away for awhile. He said “The world is my oyster; I can do anything I want. For now I want to travel, to get a different view of film making around the world.” ‘The Cool Boys’ is Mooleedhar’s latest work, which received equity funding from the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company.

Get this… in 2012, Kern Rose will officially be an artiste. Not only is the young professional changing his name, but he’s planning something called the Marshon Take Over which will start with his first ever soca release ahead of C2K12. “The track is called, Wifey Less and it was produced by London Future,” explained Rose. He noted that Future was well known for creating mega hits for Trini male-duo Nebula 868, such as Amped Up and Words Can’t Explain. What’s even more impressive is the fact that Rose has put the mastering of his track into the highly capable hands of Precision Production- a team best known for their work with artistes such as Machel Montano, Destra Garcia and even Kes. All of this is due to coincide with the launch of his new website, which he assured will be a one of a kind platform for many in the Caribbean diaspora. Indeed the year ahead promises to see great things out of Kern Rose’s camp. He’s highly motivated and willing to take the necessary risks to make everything become reality. He has the mind of a winner and the heart of a champion so when he says, “I’m doing it!” you had better believe that it will be done.

Nicki Minaj May Return For Event
Youth Fest Returns B
unji Garlin, Fay Ann Lyons, Destra, Maximus Dan and 3Suns are among the most successful soca artistes of the day and they all cut their teeth on one stage in one event. Over a decade ago when they were fledgling acts these now world acclaimed artistes performed at the Carnival Youth Festival presented by Randy Glasgow Productions, which has served as the platform from which a number of successful soca, rapso and calypso artistes launched their careers. Over recent months a number of up and coming young artistes, their parents and also teachers from Glasgow’s alma mater, the Mucurapo Secondary School have been pleading with him to reintroduce the Youth Fest, the last of which took place in 2007. In the years since then it has proven extremely difficult for new soca artistes to access major events where they can showcase their talents before thousands as with the Youth Fest. Glasgow said he has decided to
bring the Youth Fest back because he is seeing a new youth movement in the local music arena on the horizon and there is again the need for an event such as the Youth Fest to cater to the nation’s teens and young adults. “These movements in the music arena come in cycles and if you look at what is happening now, there is a new wave of young artistes coming out with a lot of fresh material. So there is a need for an event such as the Youth Fest once again. Even the original title sponsor of the Youth Fest, Coca Cola has been encouraging me to bring it back now,” Glasgow said. Glasgow is hoping the event will be held under the patronage of Minister of The Arts and Multiculturalism, Winston “Gypsy” Peters who himself began his calypso career as a youth. Glasgow has also sent out a request to Trinidad-born hip-hop artiste, Nicki Minaj for her to make a special guest appearance at the event so she will be able to let Trinidad see the best she has
Breakout Artiste For 2012 Is The New 'Armani of Soca' K
enneth Richards is a versatile artiste who's making a statement on the soca scene at just 22 years old. Performing under the soubriquet, “K.Rich”, Richards' single "Nothing Less" is already sizzling on radio stations across the country in advance of Carnival 2012. The song was written and produced by GBM Productions, the creative genius behind Machel Montano's "Bend Over," and Shal Marshall's "Trouble." Richards promises to bring a youthful charisma to the soca scene, with his sense of style, energy on stage, and melodic vocals. Born in New York on February 21st, 1989, Richards and his family migrated to Florida where he got his first exposure to Trinidadian culture, vis-a-vis Miami Carnival. Three years later, he and his family migrated to Trinidad where he became immersed into the soca industry by observing the success of his stepfather, Austin 'Superblue' Lyons. Witnessing the creation, in studio, of Superblue’s Road March hits

No alcohol of any kind will be available at the venue and RGP will work closely with the police to ensure there is no access to alcohol once one is inside, nor will anyone be able to enter with alcoholic drinks. There will be a detailed list of dos and don’ts for the youth or anyone attending the event and anyone in breach of these will be ejected by the police and security personnel on duty throughout the venue. RGP will spare no expense in ensuring the safety of every patron attending the Youth Fest 2012.

Richards is bursting onto the soca scene with experience in different genres of music under his belt. As the lead singer for local rock band 5 Miles to Midnight from November 2008 to December 2009, Richards introduced the genre of soca music to their repertoire. The band's popularity quickly grew, as it made appearances at establishments such as Woodford Café, Fiesta Plaza, Tsunami, Benihana and More Vino. With his roots strongly embedded in soca, Richards became one of the frontline singers for the band ‘Reelest8’ - formerly known as ‘Surface’- in February 2010. In October 2010, Richards launched his solo career. By December of that year he'd recorded his first soca song, ‘Slow Mo’ with Klase Gonzales at 1st Klase Productions. He later did a club remix of the track with Random Design Studios, which created a buzz in clubs in New York and Miami and was shortly after released in Trinidad and Tobago in mid-2011. ‘Gyal’ riddim to be released soon Tony Stark

lthough it has been released to international audiences, Trinidad is yet to hear the ‘Gyal’ riddim and the artistes that have been featured on the track. But Tony Stark is on his way to making this a possibility soon. Manager and Director of Socios Promotions, Stark said that this is the first riddim that he has produced and he is working on getting it played on the local radio stations. Some of the artistes who appear on the riddim are Buffy, Jah Bahmi, Ace and new-comers Revelation and Teknique. Stark said that he plans to do music that’s not only relevant during the Carnival season but music that could be played throughout the year. He said “It is a dancehall/soca fusion track. I purchased it from Jason ‘Shaft’ Bishop about 2 years ago and I carried it to Premier Studios to ‘touch it up’ a bit. Then early this year artistes got on board and started to sing songs on the riddim.” He said that one of the songs is a collaboration done by Buffy and Ace entitled ‘Champion Bubbler’. Other songs include ‘Gimme D Wine’ by Caesar, ‘D Boss’ by Jah Bahmi, ‘Greatest of all Time’ by Juvenist, ‘No ordinary love’ by Jahlana featuring Jahloni, ‘On the floor’ by Teknique, ‘Trinbago’ by Revelation and ‘We doh play’ by S. Carter. It is a 2-part riddim
and he is trying to source an international artiste for the second one. The riddim was mixed and mastered by Iniko Duncan, owner and engineer of Premier Studios. The song has been getting a lot of international attention, being played in cities such as Toronto, New York and Miami. He said that he is currently working on a melody video that should be completed within the next couple of weeks, which he intends to submit to Synergy TV. His main focus at present is getting the music available to the listening public.
As Manager and Director of Socios Promotional Company, his goal is to bring attention to the new, unknown artistes who need the recognition. He said “It’s an artiste development company where I make the connections for the artistes locally, regionally and internationally. I’m also the marketing and P.R person for Premier Studios. I take the music and ‘put it out’ there for the masses.” He said that he is currently working on two other riddims: ‘Reckless’ and ‘Banyard’, with Banyard being produced by Jason Lee.

Look no further; two events promise to be that new and exciting change to the mundane Carnival parties that takes place year after year. ‘Docked- The official Carnival Cruise’ takes place on Sunday 29th January aboard the ‘SS Soca’ (Treasure Queen). Celine Dion booking: A major boost to Jamaica and the Caribbean Jamaican promoter Walter Elmore's Art of
Music Productions (AMP) successful bid to attract mega star Celine Dion to the 2012 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival is being viewed as a boost for the festival and for the region. Inking the deal, Elmore says, took some "jumping through hoops" but now that all systems are set for Dion's first performance in the Caribbean, he is understandably very excited. "Her production team is amazing and has been working with my team to make sure that everything's in place. It is going to be an exceptional show," he promises. Scheduled to perform on the Friday night of the festival, which runs from Janu-

We’ll see what life brings — let’s put it that way. “To have an official Wu-Tang Clan album with everybody coming together, it’s never an easy task," he continued. "It’s like an independent film or something, a lot of pieces that have to be put together. ET&T: Do you think that promoters would respect you now that you are on your own? N.B: I have always demanded a certain level of respect but people would always be people. To me it’s how you handle the situation. You know as Kees would say if they want to be disrespectful, let’s just forget the gig, you know? I don’t need it. People have to respect me and if you don’t want to, then you don’t need to hire me. I am never disrespectful to anyone so it should be reciprocated.

he is as energetic on the stage as she is off and is now the leader of an allfemale band known as Sass. Nadia Batson, backed by her all girl band, intends to bring a lot of energy, sophistication and versatility to her performances next year. Empowered and confident, Batson is ready for Carnival 2012 and has already released one of her groovy selections for the season. A fellow singer of Kes the Band, Batson said that she has wanted to start a female band for a very long time and is happy that she took the chance to make it happen. She was eager to sit in our Hot Seat this week; let’s hear what she has to say.
ET&T: Describe your ideal guy. N.B: I like to be intrigued and I like someone who makes me laugh. I also like someone who I can have intellectual intercourse with; someone of substance. Oh and also a guy who can cook. (laughs) ET&T: What do you do to stay fit and healthy during the Carnival season? N.B: The only thing that could help you is rest; I always tell people that. During the day I try to limit my outings. I have such dark drapes in my room to sleep. People don’t know this but during Carnival time, performing constantly takes a toll on you not only physically but mentally and emotionally. I don’t think anyone else in the world could put up with this: you perform show after show and people always expect you to do your best, to put out 100%. So a lot of rest and also vitamins.
ET&T: Describe Sass in your own words. N.B: To me sass means empowerment. When I think about Sass I think sexy and sophisticated; “stush” with a hint of bacchanal. (laughs) ET&T: How does it feel to be the leader of an all-female band? N.B: Very empowering; I feel so happy. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, I feel like my vision is finally being realized. It is very rewarding. ET&T: What about those who say that you are following Beyonce as she also has an all-female band? N.B: Well then every male band in the world is following each other then? That’s so stupid, it makes no sense at all.
ET&T: You have a great sense of style and fashion both on and off the stage. Who is your glam squad? N.B: Arlene Villarule does my make-up and I recently signed with Sasha Cosmetics so they’ll be onboard from now on. Chi/ Bioslik is the hair sponsor for the band and Fashion Dandy and Christian Boucaud are the stylists for the band.
ET&T: Been hearing some pregnancy rumours…Are they true? N.B: WHAT? No….and that’s not even funny. ET&T: Do you think that having an all-female band is a recipe for bickering amongst the girls? N.B: No, not at all and that’s such a chauvinistic statement. My whole approach with this is that we’re a family and it is to develop relationships on and off the stage. If we ever happen to have an issue we’ll deal with it like a family. I got a lot of discouragement from people when I told them what I intended to do, but I don’t allow fear to prevent me from doing what
couldn’t handle it, I couldn’t balance the two. But I always loved fashion and I like entrepreneurship and having my own business so maybe in a few years I may reopen a store but not now. However, my customers were upset when I closed it so they said I should have something available at least online, so next year I’m going to have my handbags and accessories sold online, so I’m currently working on that.
ET&T: What is the secret to maintaining those high notes? N.B: Chewing on raw garlic…
I need to do. No unsubstantial assertion is going to keep me back; just assuming that it’s not going to work is not enough for me. If it does happen and we have an issue, we’ll deal with it as it comes and like a family.

ET&T: What? N.B: Yes, chewing on raw garlic and it’s actually Kees who taught me that secret. Garlic is actually a natural anti-biotic, so it helps keep the vocal chords clean from mucus and stuff like that. Backstage you would see Kees and me just chewing on raw garlic. People would say, “Nadia it’s Carnival Friday how are you still belting out those notes?” Well that’s the secret… garlic baby (laughs)

ashion was definitely at the top of everyone’s list this year. The fashion gurus told us what was hot and what was not and not only did we listen, we even created our own styles. Why not? As long as you feel comfortable wearing it, you own it! Some of these trends have stood out more than others and although the list is exhaustive, we were able to compile the top five looks in 2011. Time will tell which direction fashion follows as 2012 progresses.
50’s bathing suits- A favourite for the ladies. Who would’ve thought that high-cut bathing suits fitting on the waist would’ve made it into 21st Century? The top and bottom matching pieces were a hit for the summer season, with some fashionistas switching it up: matching the bra with a high-waist skirt or shorts and completing the outfit with a pair of sandals or funky wedge heels. Banana Republic Men’s ShortsThese were definitely a favourite for the summer and still are even as the Christmas season nears. They were seen on every boat cruise and backyard jam as the men topped off this outfit with button down shirts or jerseys and a pair of boat shoes. Rompers- They made their way into 2011 – particularly the floor-length variety
Denin cut off shorts- You know these; the ones where the pockets are sticking out below the shorts. Apart from being the number one choice for the rebellious types, these are pretty simple to make. Got an old pair of jeans or a pair that you don’t wear often? Then get a pair of scissors, cut off the bottoms and make your own. No need to visit the store to spend hundreds when you can get a cheaper alternative.
Jeggings- Leggings that are designed to look like tight denim jeans. These came out with a bang and have been trending ever since. The gender lines have been blurred with this piece of clothing as, what was once typically designed for women; is now being worn by men. Probably the most known case of a man wearing jeggings, was at the 2011 BET Awards, when Lil Wayne performed while wearing a pair.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR HAIR COLOR A
fter making the decision to color your hair you certainly don't want your colour fading away after just a few shampoos. That is especially true once you have found the perfect shade. Rinse as well as permanent colors tend to lose their brightness after just a few washes. So here are some things that you can do to keep your hair color looking fresh and vibrant for much longer than before. Your hair should be in good condition to receive and hold color. Hair damaged from chemicals or the sun may not be able to retain color well. Give your hair the time it needs to bounce back before applying color. Don't wash your hair right before you
color. Let natural oils build up just enough to help grab onto the color. This will help it adhere to the hair shaft better and make the color last longer. Use shampoo and conditioner that is made for color-treated hair. These help the color to stay longer. Stay away from the sun as much as possible. It can fade out even the best color job in a matter of hours and even damages your hair. If you must be outside for an extended period of time, wear a hat or scarf to help protect your hair. Another option is to apply a deep conditioner and let the sun's heat activate products that will help the hair. Avoid swimming pools that contain

chlorine because it can alter the shade of your color significantly. Additionally, mixing any chemicals with the ones in the hair can further damage it, causing breakage and split ends. Color-treated hair fades naturally on its own. Following these tips will drastically slow down that process.

opular DJ Titan has been making quite a name for himself with his string of innovative parties. He forced his way into the Carnival scene this year with an eastside event in Trincity. He brought out the big guns like Machel Montano to ensure there was nonstop vibes. uch like the murder rate in Trinidad, the fashion fails have seemingly spiraled into 2012 as well. Here are just two examples of bad fashion choices that the guys at the squad managed to capture.
The young lady on the left made a bad choice. No doubt this outfit would have looked great when she saw it on the mannequin, but somehow she just did not do it much justice. The reason for this is directly related to her poor choice of accessories. The green necklace does little for her skin tone, nor does it compliment her outfit.
The second fashion fail is a little more disturbing than the first. This white and black stripe on stripe ensemble was not well put together. The boots just made the outfit stand out even more (in a bad way). We’ll give her points for trying to stick to a good colour scheme even down to her earrings.

The Afro-British cinema and television actor built his reputation as a performer in sitcoms and cable tv dramas during the 1990s and early 2000s before segueing into Hollywood movies in 2005. The Dark Knight Rises Christopher Nolan says it will be the last Batman film he directs and Christian Bale also says he will not return to the mega franchise. In this installment, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, and pushes its hero Batman to breaking point and beyond.
The Hobbit In a pre-Lord of the Rings setting Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett star in this Peter Jackson Film. The Amazing Spiderman No more Toby Maguire but this film should be as successful as its predecessors. In the film a teenaged Peter Parker grapples with both human problems and amazing super-human crises.
