LOCAL CELEBS SPEAK ON THE FUTURE NEWS OF ENTERTAINMENT
W
ith all the images and sound bites on youth violence, there has been a resurgence of the once popular term, ‘Generation X’. However, in the midst of this negative surge there are many rising stars within the creative arts - singers, musicians and actors. Some established professionals have suggested who some of the members of ‘Generation Next’ might be. Singer, DJ and radio host, Richard Trumpet nominates Tobagonian songstress Adana as one to look out for. According to him she has the total package and is destined to make waves in the entertainment industry in the future, despite what he described as the challenges of her getting more deserving exposure given that she is Tobago based. “She has the look. She has one of the most outstanding voices for relatively known artistes.” As regards singers, successful producer Millbeatz revealed some exciting news about his sister to justify why any discussion on the future of entertainment could not escape songstress Denice Millen. While steadily increasing her social media following, her Singing Saturdays series on Instagram has attracted the attention of regional and international acts such as Ma-
jor Hype, Taurus Riley, Christopher Martin, Alaina as well as music executives in the United States. She is also soon to release the first track off her much anticipated EP. According to Beatz, Denice is “ currently on that journey to being the next biggest singer from Trinidad to show the world our talent.” Kernal Roberts
and upcoming talent. In a similar vein, Richard Trumpet suggested that singer/artiste and Laventillian producer, Pompey might be one to crack the ceiling. “He is extremely talented and can play almost any instrument. He has an amazing voice as well and he could write… he can do it all.” Nevertheless from Millbeatz’s vantage point it was difficult to predict who the next big producer might be, as for him it could be anyone since discipline and consistency was key, “It all depends on how hard they choose to work in that given and how much traffic flow (writers / artist) their work attracts.” Nikki Crosby
Proclaiming that he might be the next big thing to hit the entertainment world, as he transitions from producer to artiste, “The next big thing is gonna be me and I’m working toward that”, decorated producer Kernal Roberts also shared that young Calypsonian Helon Francis had caught his eye owing to his fresh take on Calypso, unique voice, soulful melodies and excellent writing skills. As regards producers, he suggested that we should look out for great music in 2017 from J2M, a young Millbeatz
Veteran actress and talk show host, Nikki Crosby identified multitalented hit sensation, Rodell ‘Rodey’ Cumberbatch as the future of comedy. Becoming an Instagram sensation and amassing many followers, he has now begun to take his craft to the next level, having premiered his first play, ‘The Ridiculous 6 1/2.’ According to Nikki, “He was a star through the videos and now people are getting to see him onstage...I can see him in future movies.” She also hinted that reggae lovers should look out for local reggae group 645, a group of youngsters with a conscious style who have the distinct privilege of opening for Beres Hammond in May. She also expressed excitement about the local rock band Lynchpin. Renowned playwright and actor, Raymond Choo Kong added

that Trevon Jugmohan, actor and producer of ‘The Altar Boys’ as well as the soon to be staged ‘My Horny Prime Minister’ was a name that would be synonymous with quality theatre in the future. Also acting in the presently staged, ‘The Altar Boys’, 21 year old Nicholas Subero, was described by Choo Kong as an “instinctive actor” whose name and image we can expect to see more of. President of TUCO and Rapso stalwart Lutalo Masimba aka Bro. Resistance selected Preedy, Voice and Rapso artiste Curious Ringo as ones to pay attention to because of their superior writing skills as well as their seeming ability, “to be grounded and not get carried away with the entertainment environment. They are thirsty for stardom... Curious Ringo just needs a window to come in the mainstream.” In the realm of Calypso he singled out Karen Asche owing to her commitment to commentary style calypso, her impeccable voice and large following, “She is also humble and not stressed by the glitz and glamour of the entertainment world.” Resistance lamented though that, “There is no support structure or even performance spaces where younger artistes can fulfil their creative desires outside of competitions and Carnival.” Therefore, at least when it comes to music and the arts, all is not lost. These are just some of the rising stars whose light can shine on what seems to be a dim reality.

VOICE READY TO CEMENT STATUS AS FUTURE OF SOCA
ife has changed tremendously for Aaron “Voice” St Louis and he is taking it all in stride. He is enjoying the life that he has always dreamt of living while applying and embracing all the lessons as they come. At just 23, St Louis not only carries the title of ‘International Soca Monarch’ but also ‘The Youngest International Soca Monarch.’ He has been touring and to date has visited Barbados, St Vincent, Jamaica, Canada and New York among other destinations. Since his breakaway success Voice may be acquiring a long list of experiences, but there are some that would remain with him. Thus far according to Voice he has seen and felt an appreciation for him and his music. "I feel accepted and recognized as part of the future generation, future of Soca and as part of Soca" shared Voice, a plan that he hoped to achieve as he headed into Carnival 2016. Now as the Voice of the youth (no pun intended) St Louis has accepted the label of role model which has been placed on him by many. He understands that his achievements are serving as motivation for many youths. One of the most important things to him is that he continues to act as a motivator, not only to those involved in music, but in any facet of life. He believes that the words of his song "Cheers To Life" contributes to positivity. The words "From yuh wake up this morning...you's ah winner…" transcends any limitations. Truth be told, being the Soca Monarch throne was never on Voice’s mind. In the purest and most genuine form his goal was to ensure that his contribution was a positive one. It is quite evident that his mission was accomplished. As a bonus St Louis carries one of the most sought after titles in Trinidad and Tobago’s soca realm. Many persons when 4
commenting on his success and future expressed concern about the pressures he may feel from the industry. However, being pressured is not one of his concerns. His focus is on giving the world music that is palatable and relatable. While he understands his creative process he is now seeing and interacting with the business differently as a performer. His greatest lesson to date, in his words are, “Being an artiste is being an entrepreneur and an employee at the same time.” He

added, “At the end of the day while you are responsible for making your decisions you are working for the people.” Other than God he credits the people for having him in the position that he is in presently. St Louis understands the power of the masses and is appreciative of the overwhelming support that he received to date which added as additional encouragement for him to continue pursuing his dreams. “Take This Advice…Take Your Own Advice” are words that will
forever remain with him since given. While Voice has a strong team of family and friends assisting in making decisions the words shared with him by Bunji Garlin reminded him that he is accountable for his actions. “At the end of the day you have to answer for yourself” says St Louis. Voice is well on his way. His vocal and writing talent added to his positive attitude has set him on the right part. We at ET&T Magazine look forward to seeing him grow.

Besides working on his performance for the festival, his latest song, Sam’s Song is due to be released this week. Nahge revealed that this song is particularly close to his heart as it is based on a real life experience. He further lamented that his friend whose name is Sam, used to self harm. During those times, Nahge lent the support he believed she needed. When asked to share his creative process, Nahge stated, “I go through situations, happening directly or indirectly, everyday situations and build a song around it. It works both ways. Sometimes, a song may come and then the beat, or a beat may come, then the words. For example Sam’s Song being a real life situation, the words came instantly and then the music.” During the entire process Nahge said that in his head he reaches as far as the video concept and that his songs are basi-
cally the story of his life, at that time. He also seeks inspiration from international artists such as Biggie, Wiz Khalifa, Drake, J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar. As for his plans for the remainder of 2016, he stated, “I plan to release some more singles, with the hope of it reaching out there. For the opportunity to travel and make music to put Trinidad on the map and to show those who take the craft seriously that you can be whoever you want to be and follow your dreams, to make change in the music industry in Trinidad and Tobago.” For fans wishing to stay up to date with this local rapper they can like and follow his Facebook and Instagram page at Jay Nahge and subscribe to his YouTube channel, Official Overdose.

He said after they stopped their business relationship, she stole his wig designs and was selling them to the public. He also claimed that she promised to do a reality show with him that never came to fruition. Minaj said she never had any formal contracts with Davidson and that hairstyles cannot be trademarked. The rapper won the first decision and the judge ruled that she owed nothing to the wig maker. However, Davidson took the case to Appeals Court, which ruled in his favor, saying that the oral agreement between the two parties was enough to garner a case. The court said that under their agreement, Davidson would make wigs for Minaj's personal use and she broke that contract by taking his designs to the marketplace. Upon dismissing the case, Davidson now revokes all claims against Minaj.

Hobbies: Reading, Dancing, Hiking, Music Career: Student Nikita claims her life goal is simply to become successful doing what she loves, while inspiring others during that process. There is no doubt we can support her longing for intrinsic satisfaction on her lifelong journey. However, she is equally passionate about some of the things she does not like. Her pet peeves include speak-
ing to people who are constantly on their phones, shoulder lurkers who try to peer into your phone when you are texting and people who give half-hearted answers when she is genuinely trying to figure out what’s wrong with them. Alrighty then. As far as her modeling Ms. Guevara believes she started late as her first professional photo shoot was done in 2014. Speaking of shoots, she worked with some of the islands hottest lensmen
including Richard Munro, Nigel Reid and Jodel Derby. Oddly enough, Nikita doesn’t have any favourite designers, but she is definitely open to rocking out in hot designer gear especially for advertising purposes. In order to maintain her figure for those opportunities, Guevara says she recently invested in gym equipment so she can workout at home. As far as diet, she doesn’t follow a strict regimen but says she tries to eat clean and she drinks lots of water.

WHEN ART MEETS LIFE
hirty-one year old Woodbrook native Andrea McKenzie hails from a very well-known creative family. Therefore, it’s no surprise that she has been fascinated by the subject of art from a very young age. As she puts it “It was a natural gift passed on from generations, a gift I expressed in my quiet moments.” Now, out of those quiet moments, the former Diego Martin Secondary and SBCS Marketing graduate is ready to make a bold statement. In fact, she has been generating a nice buzz in artistic circles already having displayed her work on a variety of international platforms. Andrea’s quest is now to explore a career in the arts that is filled with intrinsic satisfaction. She revealed that after many years of being unhappy with a regular job, she decided to cut her losses and
count her gains by pursuing her passion fulltime with a focusing on her happiness. Happiness is surely contagious because we’re extremely happy for her. Check out some of her work along with a brief Q&A.
which I can't disclose at this time, but it is worth the wait (big smile).
Describe the type of art you create? My work is multi-faceted. It is abstract/ Impressionism. My signature is my use of bright colors which illustrates my vibrant & effervescent personality. It is also an ode to my mixed ancestral heritage.
Has art been a financially viable option for you? Most definitely! With the advent of social media many non-traditional avenues have been opened for me to showcase my creations to the world. I have been commissioned to do pieces for clients in Europe, North America as well as regionally and at home. There is also a growing appreciation of art among the younger demographic which is fantastic as an additional target market.
Apart from art, what other career avenues are you pursuing? I'm currently working on other projects in support of the arts
What are your short-term & long-term goals? My short-terms goals are to further enhance my skills and techniques as an artist. As well as

working toward having art pieces featured more prominently on an international level. My longterm goals are to branch off into different areas of business that are of interest to me such as ladies fashion.
Do you believe your body is a work of art that needs to be sculpted in the same way? What does fitness mean to you? I see personal health & wellbeing as encompassing. It is at the intersection of my physical, emotional & spiritual self that I feel most whole. This is also linked to my ability to create. Physical fitness is very important to me as it allows me to de-stress. Also when you look your best it is an extra dose of confidence.

FASHION T
wenty-one year old Diego Martin bred model Darron Clarke could very well be Trinidad and Tobago’s next big thing in Fashion. He was recently signed to Major Model Management NYC and as they say in entertainment: “That’s sort of a big deal.” He is one of the fastestrising commodities on the fashion circuit having only left Trinidad and got into modeling internationally a year now. ET&T caught up with the new face for an exclusive albeit brief interview. ET&T: How did you manage to get into modeling? DC: I was kind of into it before getting scouted, but never looked at it as a full time career. Now I do. I worked with photographers back in Trinidad; Calvin French, Kerron Riley, Mark Gellineau, Arnaldo James and Cecil Evans. I made sure to stick with the photographers that fully understood their craft. Then while in NYC looking at schools, I got scouted on the subway by my agent at Major. ET&T: Who are your industry mentors? DC: I wish I had someone who mentored and nurtured me, but honestly I jumped into it head first alone, which I think is the best way to do it.
EXCLUSIVE!! TRINI BOY COULD BE FASHION’S NEW FACE
ET&T: Give us a bit of your portfolio. Who are some of the designers/ photographers/ shows/ magazines you worked with or were featured in? DC: Runway: Telfar, Luar Zepol, Vfiles, General Idea, Malan Brenton, Pyer Moss, Palmiers Du Mal, Asia Fashion Collection. Print: Coveal Magazine, Volt Magazine, Refigural Magazine, The Fashionisto Magazine. ET&T: What is your dream modeling gig? DC: A Saint Laurent campaign or I-d magazine cover. ET&T: How do you envision yourself 15 years from now? DC: Hopefully still traveling and own my own art gallery, curating. ET&T: Being immersed in the industry, what are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about the industry? DC: That guys are expected or even required to have an athletic carnival body… you know… the Tyson Beckford, David Ghandy type. That era of male models ended about 8 years ago. The skinny guys are killing it right now.

MARK HARDY
M
arcus Braveboy aka Mark hardy has been doing his thing on the local underground entertainment circuit for quite some time. Now that his Xplicit Entertainment team has made it into the local mainstream, he is ready to take things to the next level. ET&T caught up with him for an interview where he talks new music and more! ET&T: Your Facebook page describes you as the Vocal Chameleon. What sort of range are we talking about? MH: Well I think I have the ability to chant and rap in different octaves and pitches. This ability stemmed from when I was a teenager trying to find my own voice, I started by imitating the artistes I looked up to. I would try to sing like 3suns, Spraggabenz, Bunji Garlin, Red Rat, Wyclef, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man just to name a few. ET&T: Do you think the fact that you can switch it up between genres makes it harder for people to identify with you? MH: At first it was a genuine concern of mine, but I’ve realized that over the years that I’ve grown into my own unique voice and vocal style, which can be identified no matter what genre I venture into. To be honest, being open-minded and experimenting with different genres has actually opened more doors for me than anything else, especially in the international music market. ET&T: What was the experience of performing with Bad Royale at the Mad Decent pool party like? MH: It was amazing! Performing at the Mad Decent Pool Party in the Miami Beach area was so much fun! As soon as I stepped on the stage the crowd started cheering even though they had no clue who I was; and
throughout the performance they were really into it and even followed my instructions when I said “jump” or “dab” or “hand in the air”. There were even some Bajans and Trinis in the crowd who gave me that extra support! The brotherhood and connection I have with Bad Royale is very similar to the brotherhood and connection I have with my Xplicit Entertainment crew in Trinidad so they really made me feel right at home. The upcoming single I have with them called “Galaxy Ranger” even got played at Ultra on Sunday by both Bad Royale and Party Favor (another popular edm dj/producer).
ET&T: Tell us about the track ‘Don’t Blush Baby.’ MH: The idea for “Don’t Blush Baby” came about when Yung Rudd’s dad (the legendary David Rudder) was in studio with us recording an intro for our upcoming album TTT (Trinidad and Tobago Trap). We did the intro interview style and he mentioned the Chris Gayle incident, as it related to Caribbean dialect and what we were doing with our Trapso movement. So as soon as he left the studio, we had a conversation about it and decided to try to turn that statement into a song concept. Mevon Soodeen, who is our producer started making the beat and Yung Rudd started singing the hook and I started chanting and immediately we felt that our friend Christian Kalpee would be perfect to collaborate on the song with us.
Christian came to the studio and the rest is history!
ET&T: Share a little bit about the album you are prepping for release. MH: The name of the album is TTT (Trinidad and Tobago Trap). We are looking at a June/July release for the album. All songs on the album are produced by Mevon Soodeen from Xplicit Entertainment and we have quite a few features on the album. Fans can look out for collabos from Kevon Carter, Umi Marcano, Chinaka, Rheon from Cynx, Anokha Baptiste, Neval and Christan Kalpee. There may be some more surprise features in store so stay tuned! ET&T: Do you think Trapso was a fad or a genre that has the potential to grow? MH: We think that it definitely has the potential to grow, as Trapso has evolved to cover day to day life and pop culture in Trinidad and Tobago. There are a few young artists who have messaged us to let us know that Trapso has inspired them to create their own style of Trapso and also Xplicit Entertainment recently released a popular trapso song from Aaron Fingal called “Tiida Anthem”. We think that once there is slang or “talk of the town” in Trinidad and Tobago, there will be Trapso. ET&T: Why did you pursue an education in Law as
opposed to music? MH: My initial plan was to go to London to study Music Business. However, as I got more involved in the industry I realized a lot of music business executives such as Clive Davis had a background in law and also how important it was to have an understanding of law to protect yourself in the music industry. The opportunity presented itself, for me to study law in Trinidad, in a way that I could afford to pay for my education myself and I decided to pursue it. I’ve been able to put my legal knowledge to use on many occasions, one being, negotiating and signing a one song record deal a few years ago with an independent record label in America. ET&T: What are your musical and artistic goals for the next five years? MH: Musically, I definitely have my eyes set on the international market. Beyond the Trapso project (which will most definitely continue), I’ve had the opportunity to start working with producers in Europe and America and I’m currently completing songs and projects to be released this year into next year. Hopefully those opportunities lead to others and I continue to grow and succeed in my field. My aim is to be a popular and successful artist internationally while maintaining the support and respect of my country. One of my dream jobs has always been to be an A&R for a record label. I love discovering new talent. I think five years from now I may start an agency or record label of some sort to give other artists from Trinidad and Tobago opportunities in the international market. I also have a clothing line called Addicted To Progress. Myself and my business partners have very high hopes for this brand and we are about to launch an online store, so that we can start selling internationally. Otherwise, I would love to continue contributing to the development and growth of the local music industry in any way I possibly can, as an influencer or in the future as a businessman.

HUH?
ome people will spend their last c-note on an S accessory when they haven’t eaten for the day. Those are the fashion fanatics. Others simply aren’t
big on fashion. Fair enough, but while you don’t have to be a fashionista, there are some simple rules that shouldn’t be crossed.
Clearly she was making a point to be as unfashionable as possible. We aren’t sure why or what she was protesting. All we know is we would be remiss to not do our duties as Fashion police and take action. Where do we begin? How about we just let the photo do the talking? Sigh!
Dude… the outfit is just too much. A busy pattern on the sweater is not helped by the texture and pattern of those trousers. As far as his acquaintance is concerned, we see what you were going for with your ensemble. The execution may not have been 100 percent there, but we won’t fight you this time. Unfortunately, animal cruelty is something we frown upon. Somewhere a camel is walking around with a slight limp because of you and we aren’t happy.
