LOCAL VPAL SUPPORTS RIKKI JAI AS HE NEWS ADDS REGGAE TO HIS CATALOGUE
S
amraj “Rikki Jai” Jaimungal has been a consistent name and voice in Chutney and Chutney Soca throughout his 30 year career. With a career that has lasted as long as his, the prominence of his brand in Trinidad and Tobago and Caribbean Diaspora throughout the world is quite understandable. This prominence has afforded Rikki Jai numerous opportunities to travel and indulge in various cultures and experiences, adding to his nondiscriminatory approach to music. Rikki Jai’s love for music and his open-minded approach has created an environment for him to add another genre to his portfolio; Reggae. Ambitiously, Jaimungal is not releasing a single but a 10 track album titled ‘Rikki Jai Reggae Moods.’ While this may be a surprise to many, this is not his first time singing, recording or perform-
ing Reggae. A previous release ‘I’m Sorry’ afforded him the opportunity to perform as the opening act at the Oracabessa Reggae Festival in New York. He believes that the perfect time for this venture is now. “Reggae was a part of the growing process just like Soca, Pop, Bollywood and Chutney, so doing it is very natural for me” shared Jaimungal. Senior Label Manager of VPAL (VP Associated Label) Donovan
Williams expressed his enthusiasm and optimism for a successful album with the potential to tap into mainstream markets. The distribution partnership between Jaimungal and VP Records has existed for years with him being featured on numerous ‘Soca Gold’ compilations. Rikki Jai also echoes the same sentiments as Williams, further adding, “I believe that the world will embrace the songs that I have written and have produced with some of the best producers in reggae.” For him, VPAL is the logical choice as he recognizes its parent company VP as “The world leaders in Reggae Music distribution.” VPAL, at present is preparing to unveil a series of solid marketing and promotional campaigns inclusive of radio and television in key markets for the album which is set to be released on August 26th 2016. This latest musical offering is the lead single off the band’s new EP entitled “Sugar” which was produced by Pantin who also serves as the band’s keyboardist and musical director. LOCAL RICARDO DRUE'S NEWS BUSINESS ACUMEN GROWING Written by Aba Luke
C
aribbean entertainer Ricardo Drue has certainly stamped his name and the ID brand in the minds of the youth of Antigua. His recently concluded ID children’s event hosted at the Merryland Amusement Park on the island, has left a mark in the minds of many, proving that Drue is indeed one to watch when it comes to the business of soca and carnival. The ‘Professional’ is carving his space in the industry. He says he’s bent on ensuring that even as his name solidifies, his business acumen allows him to expand his net worth; but amid even that, he sees this aspect of delivery as something necessary, something that connects him to the people in quite a different way. A father of four young boys, Ricardo believes that more must be done to preserve ‘youth’. “Kids are growing up way too fast in
many instances. It’s our responsibility as adults to show them just how amazing it can be to be young. We have to make sure they enjoy every aspect of their childhood and give them really safe, clean, happy times,” he said. IDland, as the event was called, was Drue’s first in what will be an annual event in Antigua- the island of his birth. Some 5000 patrons attended and according to the reviews coming in, smiling faces and excited looks could be seen everywhere. “Parents really enjoyed themselves with their kids. It was hard to tell who had more fun,” said radio personality, TJ of
Vybz FM radio in Antigua. These memories, the artiste says, are the ones he would like to cement in correlation with his name. Building the ID brand has been a journey. In the past three years, Ricardo Drue has carefully distinguished himself in the industry. He believes there is much more than meets the eye, when it comes to the business of Carnival, a business that he feels all artistes can and should capitalize on. “This is just the beginning,” he explained, noting that a strong and sturdy brand, which he is building, should not be merely used for the satisfaction of one simple ideal. “I love performing. I love sharing my music, my passion, with fans, but I also think every entertainer or personality, should at some point, evolve into something bigger, something that assures economic sustainability for years,” said Drue. Drue’s single, ID, which was released post T&T carnival 2016,
has been receiving favorable reviews across the region. Having backed up the track with the perfect video, the vibe of the song has emitted the energy of soca music in quite an endearing way and this too was realized at IDland on July 10th when the singer took the stage. In the past few months Ricardo and his team has toured the Caribbean without failure, delivering to fans, his usual energetic performance. At IDland on July 10th, Antigua’s young and vibrant were treated to numerous rides, and besides Drue himself, entertainment came from a number of local acts, among them, Kid Viscous, Baby Eve, magician Guerin Hunte and the Antiguan Dance Academy. “All proceeds of the event go to charity,” said Drue. “I feel it’s simply part of my social responsibility as an artiste,” he added. He now looks forward to Antigua’s competitions and events, as the island nears its carnival showcase.

ots of event promoters promise the experience of a lifetime, but very few actually back it up. However, Glam God and associates have decided that they are going to follow through and deliver on their promise of an epic experience on October 1st. Aptly titled Touché, the all-inclusive affair seeks to one-up other premium affairs by going all out on entertainment, cuisine and overall setting. The setting will indeed be as extravagant as they come and will no doubt provide lots of fodder for the photo enthusiast. Maraval’s Estate 101 will be transformed into a pink paradise to accompany the event’s colour-coordinated theme. Men are urged to think pink while ladies have a chance to be pretty in pink. This concept has been viewed as a welcome change from all of the all-white attire events in recent times. Top-notch entertainment is also promised as the ever capable DJ’s Rapid Response and Assassin are entrusted with keeping it classy, but far from stush. Plus, the promoters promise lots of special surprises as we get closer to the event. 2

Of course it would be remiss to mention an ultra-premium party without highlighting the abundance of food and drink available. From
the finest cocktails from T&T’s top mixologists to the best bubbly that can be acquired, there will be much to whet the palate. The open bar will also feature popular brands such as Hennessy, Ciroc and a host of other drinks, plus scintillating special shots every hour. The food buffet will feature a cornucopia of cuisine options from shrimp cocktail to ribs and more. As one would expect tickets are going fast. Early bird tickets started at a cost of $600. RKG IS MR. PERSONALITY
Written by Akeela Lassalle
"T
une too bad on a Friday!" Wild, untameable, passionate, crazy... especially when it’s Friday! You have now entered into the realm of Radio Personality, Rossi Khempis Gray better known as RKG whose deep, smooth and masculine voice permeates through the air-waves of Next 99.1 Mondays - Saturdays and has you yearning for more. He’s all hype, vibe and personality. Better yet, "Mr. Personality". He makes you wonder if he even has a care in the world. Well, wonder no more. We hooked up with the entertainer where he dished on the person behind the mic, the mixer and the moniker “Mr. Personality.” “I didn’t know how to operate the mixer, but I said I did!” RKG recollects of his interview with Brandon Khan, General Manager of Trinidad Broadcasting Company (TBC). We started our interview there - with the fast-growing relationship which unfurled between himself and the network in a matter of three days. His main purpose for showing up was to submit a demo of his song entitled “Woman on Fire”. It was his third undertaking in the soca genre. He was only 21 years at the time and already dabbling in his passion for music. Though still not quite sure which genre would suit his voice best, he knew that the stage was where his heart belonged. Radio seemed like a good “Plan B”. In fact, he had completed a course at the International Broadcasting Company (IBC) which had been a walk over for him. It was only natural of him to enquire of vacancies within the network. He was met with a negative response by Program Director, Chris Boynes, but was then asked to submit a radio broadcaster’s demo. Two days later, he presented Boynes with the demo. RKG watched as he listened. “I assumed he just didn't like it!” 6
recalled the now seasoned presenter. But only after four days, he found himself working on the adult contemporary radio station - vibe city 105.5 fm, alongside veterans such as George Gonzales, Black Coffee and Original Wax. He spent three years with them, until he, at age 24, was ready to move on. “I no longer wanted to play music that my mother and grandmother listened to. I wanted to live my age,” he reflected. And though offers were forthcoming from prominent stations, the deals, in his opinion, were not lucrative enough. RKG, who was the father of a four year old boy, stayed at 105.5 fm until his offer with Caribbean New Media Group (CNMG). Throughout his tenure with the new network, RKG met household names such as Alan Diaz, Mark Anthony and Mr. Q. He was given a spot on Next 99.1 and quickly made a name for himself, or two - going under the ID’s RKG and Mr. Personality. He became the host of the popular music show Jamrock, which is part of "Sound It Fridays”, and creates an atmosphere in it so entertaining you’d think you’ve stormed an allinclusive fete. "Sound it Fridays” is dedicated to popular music hits, inclusive of reggae which is heard inside his Jamrock segment.

For the rest of the week, RKG plays the releases of as many new and local artistes as possible, on his program. He relates to their need for exposure as much of his musical career is still significantly devoid of it. Despite his own setbacks in the musical arena, he draws inspiration from his fans and close friends and family, namely, Jason Reyes aka Fro Hummer, Mark Abouhamad, Terry Griffith, Richard De Freitas and his mother Sherry Baptiste. This year has also started off positively for him as he was signed to VP records/VPAL music – a distribution company – a deal from which he is anticipating major success. RKG has written and sang over 30 songs, which he also plays on his programs. And just when you think life for the artiste is only about music, he reveals a more serious side to himself. “My favorite part about being on radio is being able to interact with listeners and to discuss topics mainly based on relationships.” This is something he wishes that he could practice beyond radio. Listening to others needs and granting advice comes as second nature to him. And though this may be true, love itself has defeated the artiste more than once. Being engaged on two occasions before having to walk away is a difficult reality in his life. How-
ever, it is clear that RKG, now 33, is still a strong player in the game. On June 3, 2016 he released his latest offering “Ex perience” on a rhythm produced by Dnyce productions which he, not surprisingly, calls the Relationships Rhythm. And though the title of the song requires no explanation, RKG explains that the song is of a woman who had taken him for granted and wishes to have him back, but he has already moved on… and not alone. The song, he told me, is a combination of experiences from his life and the lives of those around him. The reggae pop crossover rhythm features such acts as, Isasha and Kaya, Syah and Jah Mundy. It introduces an electronic guitar that is reminiscent of Bob Marley’s “stir it up." So who is Mr. Personality? “Mr. Personality incorporates me as a father, an artiste, a radio presenter. All the hats that I need to juggle, sometimes, all at one time.” And though there may be many hats for the artiste, he confesses that he enjoys spending his down time with loved ones. Two of whom are his sons Rossi Gray 11 and Josiah Gray 7. When posed with adjectives used to describe himself, he parted with "cool, approachable, easygoing and loving." A.Z. Sharpe

ET&T: Share a bit about your childhood. What was growing up like? KB: I grew up in Union Village, Claxton Bay. I am the youngest of six kids. My childhood was filled with lots of boy days as we call it. Everything I did involved running, I spent most of my time outdoors playing, hunting etc. Those were some great days. ET&T: How and when did you make the decision to pursue a career in athletics? KB: My local coach Gunness Persad recruited me to join his club, Simplex after he saw me running at my secondary school sports. I never went to practice because I wasn't interested in track. Till one day Mr. Persad called me and told me that Mr. Hasley Crawford came to practice to see me run, but I wasn't there. Persad also took time off to personally make the muddy walk up to my house to bring me a pair of spikes and there and then with the persuasion of my family and friends I started competitive running. I have been representing Trinidad and Tobago since 2005 and decided to turn professional in 2007 with Adidas.

More importantly, I want to win each meet that I compete in for the remainder of the season, run a personal best, be ranked in the top 10 of the IAAF world ranking standards (as I did in 2015) and finish my season healthy and injury free.
ET&T: How much of what you accomplish is natural and how much would you attribute to training?
ET&T: You had an impressive 2015, but a fairly quiet 2016 so far. What do you think has contributed to this? KB: Thank you! Yes, 2015 was a great year for me until I injured myself at the PanAm Games in Canada and was forced to end my season early. I flew to Philadelphia to have surgery performed on
KB: I definitely believe that God has blessed me with a natural talent in the sport of track. However, to be a world class athlete it requires much more than just natural talent and I work extremely hard both on and off the track, physically and mentally. Each practice session I give my very best without using the excuse of natural talent. ET&T: What is the biggest distraction you routinely face training away from home?
HOT SEAT
KB: My biggest distraction is definitely being homesick, missing my family especially my kids. ET&T: What does a cheat day meal for Keston Bledman consist of? KB: Laughs! Chipotle (Mexican Grill Food). ET&T: Share some insight on what it takes to be an Olympian. What is an average training session like heading into a meet? KB: To be an Olympian a great spiritual foundation for your life is needed especially when the challenges arise. Being an Olympian takes hard work, dedication, determination and drive. Sacrificing family time and social time along with a hunger to be one of the best athletes in the world. A typical training session lead-
ing up to a competition consists of starts, speed work, gym work and recovery via massage or rehab as well as mental preparation.
doping in athletics is more prevalent or less prevalent than the media is making it out to be?
ET&T: Do you think the Trinidad & Tobago public is too critical of athletes who do not meet their expectations?
KB: I believe it is more prevalent, but it is not my place to be the judge of this tender topic. What I will say is that no one should support doping.
KB: Yes, our culture is one where we put all our love and support only when someone is winning. People fail to understand and realize that this is our means of living. We sacrifice spending time with our families for months at a time to do our job and do it to the best of our abilities. Like everyone else we too can have not so good performing days. Support is important as it gives me a sense of pride, accomplishment and gratitude that I made the right choice in pursuing track as a career.
ET&T: Do you think a healthy Usain Bolt is beatable?
ET&T:
Would you say
KB: Usain Bolt is an extraordinary sprinter and is undoubtedly the fastest man in the world. Once Usain is healthy it will be hard to beat him, but I believe it is possible because he too can have a bad race while someone can have the race of their life and beat Bolt. I hope that person is me. ET&T: The government and corporate T&T usually shower people with
gifts and praises after the fact. Should you win Olympic gold, what sort of recognition would you want to receive? KB: Winning an Olympic gold medal is the pinnacle of any athlete’s career and is already a great honour to me, but if the question is posed to me of what would I like I would say a house for my family and monetary support to my local coach and club. ET&T: What else would you like fans/readers to know about Keston Bledman? KB: Keston Bledman is a family man. I have three beautiful kids. They are the reason for the soft side of Keston that most people don't know. I am really down to earth, cool and funny. I like gadgets and artwork, hence the number of tattoos. Laughs!

SUSPENDED
ome people think being stylish is simply about following any style that is popuS lar and running with it. However, you need to understand fashion if you are to be fashionable. Suspenders can make a suit look sharp. However, above all they are functional. Simply put, suspenders hold your pants up. Therefore, belts aren’t necessary when suspenders are being used and vice-versa. These guys didn’t get the memo. As such, we will suspend their fashion licenses for the foreseeable future. Not only is he wearing suspenders and a belt in this retro-themed ensemble, but his tie is doing its own thing. Suspended!
The outfit would have been fine if it weren’t for that faux pas.
