LOCAL PROS POINT OUT COMMON NEWS BEAUTY FAUX PAS

I

nstagram and Pinterest are great sources for beauty tips and advice. Precisely because, beauty trends are always emerging and evolving and keeping up to date can be overwhelming. However, according to 3 local beauty professionals, there are some beauty trends that can only be classed as beauty fails. Despite their busy schedule, these three talented ladies were able to share with us what beauty fails to avoid. Bridget Pouchet has been in the industry for over 10 years and has worked for brands such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, Angostura, Tribe, Fantasy and American actor Ian Somerhalder, to name a few. When asked what she enjoys most about being a makeup artist said "I love about that no two days are the same. I get to be a part of a bride’s special day and then I get to be involved in the creative process of developing a print ad or TV commercial. She further elaborated by revealing that her private clients are her pride and joy. Using regular concealer for dark circles is definitely a huge beauty fail according to this beauty professional, as it tends to make the area look ashy. Instead she suggests using colour correctors to counter balance-pigmented discolorations followed with regular

concealer to brighten area. Wearing the wrong shade of foundation. Not only does it photograph horribly, it can easily be avoided. Bridget suggests applying two shades closest to your skin tone to your jawline and then head outside to view it in natural lighting. Pick the one that looks the most natural. Heavy contouring without blending. Unless you’re aiming for stage makeup, avoid this at all cost. Using blush to contour. According to Bridget, blush should only be used to add colour to the cheeks. However matte earth tones colours should be used for contouring. Krysta Wallace Ottley has been a professionally trained freelance Makeup Artist since 2008. In 2011 she accepted a fulltime position with MAC Cosmetics, Trinidad where she further honed her talent, technique and speed which set her on the path to becoming a freelance Makeup Artist and Director at The MUA House. Her clients include: Lonsdale Saatchi & Saatchi, Cup of Joe and Destra Garcia. Krysta admits that applying makeup can be intimidating for anyone, but shared with us two tips to avoid making these "beauty fails." Overdone Eyebrows. The eyebrows "on fleek" became instantly famous with the help of Instagram. It consisted of very sculpted eyebrows with concealer both under the brow and above it. Krysta describes this as being “almost too perfect!” She believes, brows frame the face but too harsh a brow can also distract. Instead, she recommends avoiding brow gels and going lightly on brow powders. Her favourite go to for brows is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz or Brow Definer as soft strokes mimic hair. Krysta also believes the right

foundation is the key to preventing a beauty fail. She states “wherever possible always test your foundation before you purchase and do so from your jawline into your neck. It should MATCH EXACTLY. She further suggested using a translucent powder over the foundation so the colour doesn't change. Her go to translucent powder is Laura Mercier. Dianne John has been within the beauty industry for over a decade. Her portfolio is a mix of local, regional and international work for television, commercial advertising, film, and music, to name a few. She was also head makeup artist for local Carnival band YUMA’s IMAGINE 2013 band launch, website and Lookbook, various News Anchors, reporters, hosts and guests for television station CTV. So what beauty fails does Dianne John insists on avoiding?

1. Dark rimming of lips with a liner that does not match the lip colour. 2. Next, over drawn lips to give an overly excessive pouty lip.

THE TALES OF HOFFMAN - ONE MAN, THREE LOVE AFFAIRS, WHAT COULD GO WRONG? T

he Queen's Hall Auditorium will once more be filled to the brim with the lush, dramatic sounds of Opera as the Classical Music Development Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago (CMDFTT) hosts its second annual T&T Opera Festival from July 1-10, 2016. The Festival will feature several opportunities for the people of Trinidad and Tobago to engage, interact, hear and be introduced to the wonderful world of costumes, drama, music and of course soaring opera singing! As a special landmark occasion in 2016, the CMDFTT will be launched with the more inclusive and distinctive title of ‘Picoplat Music Development Foundation’ - a rebranding effort to widen the foundation’s scope to the development of musical education within all genres. The Picoplat, one of the Caribbean's distinctive avian citizens, was chosen for its prized virtuosic bird call and golden beak - a symbol of the innate talent and beauty of our nation’s musical abilities. The grand launch of the ‘Picoplat Music Development Foundation’ took place at the Opera Festival Gala on July 1st. 4

The main highlight of the T&T Opera Festival will be the rising opera stars of The Young Artist Collective, formed under the CMDFTT, who will thrill audiences in a unique production of Offenbach’s vividly engaging opera Tales of Hoffmann. The opera will be directed by noted dramaturge Helmer Hilwig with musical direction by June Nathaniel. One man, three love affairs, what could go wrong? - Introducing...The Tales of Hoffman! The Tales of Hoffmann, an opera by Jacques Offenbach, is a worldwide favorite with opera goers who follow the triumphs and losses of the artist Hoffmann as he recounts the three great loves of his life in all their beauty and tragedy. Highlights of this opera include the vocal pyrotechnics of the ‘Doll Song’ and the duet "Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour" considered to contain one of the world’s most popular melodies. The opera opens and closes with scenes of Hoffmann’s obsession with Stella, an opera singer. In between are visions of his passions for three other women of his past and all the delicious stories that unfold. Hoffmann will be played by Raguel Gabriel, a T&T tenor

who will be returning to Trinidad from his studies at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City, USA. T&T Opera Festival 2016 will also feature the proud launch of 12 Songs of the Islands - a newly commissioned Caribbean song collection by Trinidadian composer Dominique LeGendre. Following in the well-established tradition of setting traditional folk songs and African-American spirituals for classical solo performance, the CMDFTT has undertaken to commission a collection of Caribbean songs and poems newly arranged for piano and voice by a talented home grown composer. Also happening during the festival will be vocal masterclasses for semi-professional singers, and the Fourth Annual Music Competition where our nation’s best young singers will perform two songs each for an international panel of judges, in a bid to win a $30,000 grand prize for continuing study in voice and vocal studies. The T&T Opera Festival is a nation-wide event. This year, new opportunities have been created to make the festival more accessible to everyone, including several events, which will be FREE to the

public. A signature Opera Lime promotion (hashtag: #OperaLime) will allow the social-media savvy of the youth population a chance to win a pair of four general admission tickets to the #OperaLime evening, specifically placed in the programme for locals who will be attending the opera for the first time ever and for any young or young-at-heart opera-loving enthusiasts. The T&T Opera Festival along with other developmental outreach events, is presented with the generous support of the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts and under the esteemed patronage of The Honourable Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly. In 2013, New Jersey gave her a similar lien for $901,000 for a failure to pay taxes, which she has reportedly paid off now. That same

FEATURE A

SIX SIMPLE STEPS FOR AN INSTANT MAKEOVER

makeover can be a great way to reinvigorate your image as well your entire mood. However, you don’t have to break the bank by going to costly professionals. These six easy steps will start you off on the right track.

Give Your Lips A Pump Sexy lips say a lot for your look. Exfoliate them by gently brushing them with a toothbrush with a dab of Vaseline on the bristles. When that is done, apply a gloss that contains plumping ingredients. Ginger and peppermint are some such ingredients which provide the extra plumping effect. Shape Up or Ship Out While better left to the pros, plucking and shaping your brows is a great way to keep your look clean and sharp. It is a great, cheap investment that creates a framing effect on the eyes and makes them look larger and more intriguing and inviting. While getting the perfect arches may be more difficult than presumed, there are tools that make self-maintenance easier than you think it might be. A good grooming kit such as Benefit Smokin Eyes Sexy Eye & Brow Makeover Kit will help. The key is to go a shade lighter than the darkest brow hairs.

Choose smooth, sexy legs Lunges and squats will do their part, but to have the perfect luxuriously leggy finish try applying a special cream. The right skin-firming lotions can make them silky-smooth. When wearing short skirts, a little highlighter up the center of each leg contours the leg by reflecting light to the middle of the leg while receding the outer leg. Legs will look stronger and leaner. Be sure to have a nice smooth shave as well.

Try A New Scent Makeovers aren’t always about the look. How you smell is a big part of a makeover. Of course hygiene is important, but you can use a perfume which will match your mood and give your scentscape some variation. Perfumed lotions or mists work just as well as high end colognes for an inexpensive option. Just don’t mix too many scents as this may result in overbearing results. Nullify Dull Nails A daily massage with a moisturizing hand cream will work wonders for your nails. Proper overall hand care is how it’s done. Use a hand treatment with a mix of the

uber-moisturizers soy, shea butter and vitamin E. These ingredients

16 ET&T • JULY, 2016 • www.amgtt.com

will lock in moisture and work to pamper dry cuticles.

Go For Glow Add glow to all the right places. The right places are the bridge of your nose, the tops of your cheekbones, the center of your chin, your shoulder blades and your clavicle. These highlights add an ethereal luminescence that also boosts your sex appeal. These tips can get you started on your way to makeover city. All aboard!

oanna ‘Jo Jo Sass’ Hutton emerged from the background to quickly make a name for herself on the soca circuit. Her poppy tracks Shake Dat and Drum Roll got steady radio play and gave her the impetus to consistently share the stage with her big sister Nadia Batson. Post C2K16, Jo Jo hasn’t let up. She recently made headlines when she revealed she was pregnant for someone who remains a mystery to the media and she also released an infectious new groovy single entitled Rock With You. The track is available worldwide thanks to JoJo’s partnership with digital distribution company, Fox Fuse. The song has that smooth Caribbean feel with global sensibilities that make it a great candidate for a major movie soundtrack. ET&T caught up with the rising star to briefly discuss the single, her pregnancy and her future. Enjoy! ET&T: What inspired the decision to have a midyear release for this track as opposed to Carnival or after the pregnancy? JOJO: "Rock with you" was originally to be released earlier this year for carnival, but I felt it wasn't suitable for the time frame and also the song needed a lil more attention before releasing. However I wanted my fans to know that I'm very present even though I'm pregnant. So I decided to release it now. ET&T: Your pre-Carnival releases were both uptempo pop-tinged tracks. Do you think this song is more suited to your natural abilities than songs like Shake Dat? JOJO: Truthfully, I'm still exploring my natural abilities and

JO JO

comfort zone in terms of singing. Maybe my fans will help me to decide. ET&T: How will your impending motherhood affect your career in the immediate future? JOJO: I really cannot say. But I pray for God’s guidance and I'm hopeful for the best. And my son motivates me to work even harder on my goals at this time. ET&T: What can we expect in terms of a follow up single? JOJO: I definitely want to do some more up-tempo soca to follow up after this release. ET&T: Do you have plans to record other genres of music or are you strictly soca? JOJO: Of course. As I always say, I don't believe in limiting music or myself to one genre in particular I’d rather be versatile and see how far my music can take me. ET&T: What is your greatest fear? JOJO: My greatest fear has always been not making the right decisions. ET&T: Share some of your beauty tips. JOJO: Good rest and plenty laughter. You'd be shocked to see how beautiful it makes you. ET&T: Pregnancy usually comes with cravings. What food do you crave the most? JOJO: I crave everything that's in my eye sight at this moment. Lol. ET&T: Anything else you would like to share with readers and fans? JOJO: I just want to say thank you to all my friends and supporters who have been with me from day one. Hope I can return the love through my music.

There was even a fruit and yogurt station for the health conscious and a kids station serving up everything from cereals to snow cones. Despite having several food stations, there were long lines to get some of the fare. This proved that even the inclement weather could do little to keep crowds from a good event. ET&T looks forward to more events from this committee.

FELONY FASHION FAILS

ome fashion missteps are minute and can S be considered forgivable. Those misdemeanors usually receive minor sentences of proba-

tion. However, some are way more glaring and the guys on the force have to be a lot stricter. Here are some felony fashion foul ups.

This character tested our patience in this misdemeanor of an outfit. In fact, it was close to a fashion felony. The revealing number which also revealed bits of her bra was just ridiculous and did nothing to flatter her. Alas, a bigger crime was afoot, because someone sold her that outfit.

This other dude was definitely one of the close calls. He was all wrong in this instance. What’s worse is he was promoting an event. God forbid the patrons are just like him. Anyhooz, his choice of belt colour was ridiculous. What is more ridiculous is the fact he is wearing a belt because his pants can barely stay up. Sigh. He could have been a role model.

MOVIES

BASED ON A TRUE STORY H

ollywood has made hundreds of millions of dollars off of screenplays that are based on true stories. The fact that they are true makes them relatable and that much more incredible. Here are two new true stories coming to a theater near you.

The Infiltrator Based on a true story, U.S. Customs agent ROBERT "BOB" MAZUR (Bryan Cranston) goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar's blood-soaked drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1985 by posing as slick, money-laundering businessman Bob Musella. Teamed with impulsive and streetwise fellow agent EMIR EBREU (John Leguizamo) and rookie agent posing as his fiancé

network in which the slightest slip-up could cost him his life, Mazur risks it all, building a case that leads to indictments of 85 drug lords and the corrupt bankers who cleaned their dirty money, along with the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, one of the largest money-laundering banks in the world.

KATHY ERTZ (Diane Kruger), Mazur befriends Escobar's top lieutenant ROBERTO ALCAINO (Benjamin Bratt). Navigating a vicious criminal

War Dogs Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Jonah Hill and Miles Teller) living in Miami during the first Iraq War who exploit a littleknown government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the

high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.
