LOCAL CHRISTOPHER NATHAN TALKS NEWS THREATS TO T&T FASHION

C

hristopher Anthony Nathan is no stranger to the local fashion industry. In fact he is a Fashion Education & Industry Management Consultant and Chief Executive of Coco Velvet International Fashion Management. In addition to this, he is also Chairman of the Specifications Committee for Garment Quality at the Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards TTBS and the Internal Verifier for YTEPP’s fashion design programme at its Retraining Department. He served on the board of the Fashion Industry Development Committee FIDC at the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Investment from 2011 to 2013 and the Fashion Association of Trinidad & Tobago FATT from 2007 to 2014. In 2006 he was contracted by UTT to design its fashion programme and set up the Caribbean Academy of Fashion & Design’s facility at the John S. Donaldson Campus Port-of-Spain. He is currently conducting research for a Master’s of Science Degree in Innovation, Manufacturing Management and Entrepreneurship. However despite his busy schedule, Nathan took the time to share with us some of the problems/threats he believes are affecting the local fashion industry as well as his proposed solutions. The mandate for Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion industry is to stimulate and facilitate the business development and export activity of the fashion industry to generate national wealth. However, according to Nathan, there many issues threatening the industry that will need to be addressed in order to fulfill this mandate effectively. Some of these threats are due to; Outdated Modes of Operation and Technology, Manufacturing Challenges such as; Inconsistent Quality Standards, Low Productivity, Insufficient Skilled Technicians and not enough Manufacturing Capacity. • Merchants that sell high quality Materials, Notions and Fabric • Equipment Suppliers • Fashion Marketing & PR Firms • Professional Model Agencies • Beauty Services • Exhibition & Fashion Trade Show Spaces • More Technical Training Schools • Fashion Retail Stores a need for a Fashion District in Port-of-Spain to conduct industry business. Fragmentation amongst the fashion community and too many stakeholder ‘Divas’ is another issue the industry is facing along with the fact that politics is stymieing the industry. He also noted that Trinidad & Tobago’s fashion is entering the highly volatile and well-developed industry at a late stage and there is no room for mistakes since the fashion industry is quite competitive, diverse and very complex. He refers to it as a well-oiled machine that requires all its parts to work in tandem in order for the machine to move forward. He further added that it relies on a wellcoordinated Supply Chain that is closely linked to its Value Chain. As for proposed solutions, Nathan shared with us some of initiates he believes can make a differ-

ence within the industry. Firstly, he recommends that Port-of-Spain be positioned as the region’s fashion hub as every fashion centre around the planet has a fashion district. Nathan explained that a fashion district is essentially a cluster of businesses all providing allied, ancillary and support services to fashion industry stakeholders. He said, “We are fortunate to have the only fabric district in the Caribbean but much more is needed for the industry to flourish.” The fashion district would generally need to include: • Fashion Designers’ Showrooms • Fashion Agents • Pattern Drafting Labs • Small & Medium-sized Manufacturing Facilities

In terms of fragmentation in the industry, Nathan said there are too many ‘Divas’ who are simply are not patient with the process. Instead, these individuals expect overnight success. He further added, “These ‘divas’ refuse to put in the dedicated work that is needed to learn the trade from ground zero.” Nathan also believes that our fashion industry pioneers are constantly being disrespected in spite of the fact that they toiled for decades to lay the foundation on which our fashion industry now stands. In closing he stated “many of these ‘Diva’ stakeholders only get involved in industry development initiatives when it suits them or when they can see that it would bring direct returns to their brand. Trinidad & Tobago’s fashion industry needs all hands-on-deck to survive!”

LOCAL DJ DIAMOND LOOKING TO NEWS SHINE ON GLOBAL STAGE B

arbadian Sensation Joyann ‘DJ Diamond’ Skeete is ready to take her talents global. The popular disk jockey/dancer has found a way to meld her two loves to create a satisfying experience for her steadily growing fan base at home and has recently endeared herself to many more throughout the Caribbean. ET&T caught up with the triple threat – she is also a beauty – for an interview and she spoke on her signature style, entrepreneurship and overcoming hurdles. The disk jockey brings a unique style to her sets; turning them into all out performances instead of just musical spin sessions. “The difference is I am not aiming to just play music but to offer an entertainment” she explained. “Coming from a dance background, when I hear music I cannot help but to move. So I incorporate this into my set along with my dancers bringing not only an audio feel-good moment to the party, but a visual show as well” she added. In fact, DJ Diamond believes

it is impossible to choose between dancing and DJ’ing as they are equally important to her sets and she’s equally passionate about each craft. Another thing that sets Diamond apart from her industry peers is her eccentric style. She simply describes it as “fun and sexy” and says it is a reflection of her finally embracing her feminine side after being a tomboy for years. Her outfits are usually funky and very artistic which helps to create a vibe that connects with her audience. Another side of this enter-

tainer is her entrepreneurial side. Not enough artistes are taking care of the business end of things, but Diamond isn’t slacking. Crediting her time spent touring with Alison Hinds for teaching her about the business; Diamond has become a businesswoman herself. She is currently the Founder/Managing Director of Diamond Entertainment Agency which specializes in the management of artistes which includes dancers and promotional staff. As an entrepreneur she says much of her success is owed to her pillars of dedication, teamwork

and loyalty. Having said that, Diamond is hoping that her hard work transforms the way people view her abilities as she admits breaking the proverbial glass ceiling is her greatest challenge. However, she states her confidence that she will continue to grow into the global brand her trajectory is already pointing to. “No matter how much you try to prove yourself sometimes, some people cannot see past the fact that you are a female and they just do not want to give you the respect that you deserve, but adversity makes you stronger at the end of the day. The harder you have to fight for what you want, the sweeter the prize and reward when you receive it.”

LOCAL PROUD FATHER KESS READY TO RETURN NEWS ILLUSIONIST PREPS TELEVISION AND STAGE SHOWS FOR RELEASE S

nakes, illusions and magic are some of the components that are present within any of Kess’s shows. According to Kess, his inspiration was derived from Trinidad’s oldest magician, Mr. Abracadabra. “He made me interested in magic. I remember when he came to my primary school for a show and he blew my mind, then and there, I knew what I wanted to be… An Illusionist!” Although he has limited his appearances since the birth of his daughter Jasmine, he admitted that there are a few projects he is excited to launch and be part of this year. The first being his concert on the 6th August at Queen’s Hall and the latter is a television show 'Kess The Illusionist'' which he has already started filming. When asked what are some of the things people attending the concert can expect, Kess responded, “We have outdone ourselves this time and all new illusions, new animals, a grand magical entrance as well as magically making a Soca artiste appear on stage. The audience can literally expect ANYTHING! It will be a true magical experience.”

Additionally, some of the elements, which he considers are essential for a good show, will also be present. This includes a big stage, great lighting and as Kess says “For us Trinidadians; laughter, besides magic. I ALWAYS implement little jokes and skits to always keep my audience smiling therefore forcing them to have a great time!” As for his greatest illusion, Kess says his personal favorite is one where he performs with his wife where they switch places on stage in the blink of an eye. However, he admitted based on shares, views, and likes, his audience considers his 'greatest'' illusion to be when he ate 5 whole razor Blades. However there are many con-

cepts and ideas he would like to do in the future. Some of these include, being placed in a woodchipper, buried alive or even being placed in a safe and tossed off a cliff. Kess further added “But most of those things call for many sponsors and permissions that I need to pull off.” Future plans also include debuting his daughter. In fact his wife and him already have an illusion in mind. However, he admits this will only happen once she gets a “little bigger and can keep a secret.” With father’s day around the corner, he admitted that being a dad and an Illusionist is pretty cool. Kess says, “I must say it changed my life as an Illusionist DRASTICALLY. For my craft, I

have a lot of knives, poison, flammable liquids and weapons all over my household. I had to move all my props to a different location to ensure her safety as well as giving my pet snake '' Sandy'' away.” In terms of dressing for the part, Kess admitted, “Costuming in my household is a BIG DEAL. Furthermore, I already knew what I was wearing before I even launched the show. I basically take a few ideas from some of my Magic idols like Dan Sperry, Jonathan David Bass and Hans Klok.” For those interested in seeing Kess performing live on August 6th City Hall at 2pm, the cost is $100 (2 children on 1 ticket). Kees can also be contacted via Facebook at: Kess The Illusionist.

ALL GIRLS BAND SHARES THEIR “HEART’S CRY” D

uring those trying times when trials become overwhelming, thoughts of giving up will quickly begin clouding your mind. When each day gets harder, your purpose becomes unclear and self-doubt becomes too familiar. The fear of being rejected by your family and loved ones scares you and the fear of sharing your pain overwhelms you. Your heart is crying, your body is hurting as you hide your scars. You are fighting to survive the physical, mental and emotional abuse. That someone, who was supposed to love you, stifled your voice for too long; triumph is near. Shalane Craig and The All Girls Band (AGB) created an anthem to triumph over adversity and life’s challenges entitled ‘Heart’s Cry.’ With specific attention being placed on the issue of domestic violence, Craig and AGB 4

created visuals to remind anyone facing any challenge that through the intervention of Jesus Christ triumph against adversity can be

achieved. The accompanying video depicts a scenario of domestic violence and the eventual triumph involving divine intervention. The storyline and lyrics are destined to resonate in the hearts and minds of viewers. The release of both the single and video is the first step in introducing a campaign against domestic violence in Trinidad and Tobago, which will be spearheaded by the All Girls Band. The campaign which is titled Break The Silence will take various forms and will be shared via social media. Many may ask why address domestic violence now when there is a month dedicated to the cause. AGB responds by saying “Why wait?” They see this cause as being one of importance that should be addressed throughout the year. Story by CreativA Media

Standing in Ellerslie Store by James O'Connor

he name Peter Elias is synonymous with Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion industry. With over 20 years in the industry, Peter continues to utilize his ability to create, enhance and develop a look that’s polished, international and fashionable. In 2012, he was awarded a National Award: The Hummingbird Silver Medal for rendering loyal and devoted service in the field of Fashion and the Miss Trinidad and Tobago Pageant process. ET&T was able to catch up with this talented designer to have a quick chat about style and fashion!

ET&T: What sparked your interest for the fashion industry? Elias: Even as a child I was wideeyed about it. My mother also modelled, created her own line and had a boutique, so at a tender age of 4 years old I was exposed. ET&T: What are some of the challenges you think the local fashion industry is experiencing? Elias: On a positive note, UTT’s Fashion School has been churning out knowledgeable and talented young designers so the level will continue to elevate. There’s a client-minority who are conscious of the local industry and it’s output. I believe with consistent excellence, local designers will attract more and more clients. At the end of the day it’s about sustainability.

Elias: We’ve been dedicating more time to my resort initiative, which continues to grow. The plan is to have our pieces in every ‘destination’ spot.

ET&T: How do you describe your fashion and style? Elias: It’s definitely eclectic! I enjoy mixing all sorts of patterns, prints, periods, textures and cultures. I’m heavily influenced and inspired by our Caribbean aesthetic.

ET&T: In your opinion, what are some of the items that can be classed as wardrobe essentials? Elias: Basics like a good pair of black pants, skirt, blazer etc. are key, but more interesting is the combination of elements. Not so much what you own, but how creative and interesting are these items combined… This styling for me is more essential! ET&T: Likewise, what do you consider to be timeless pieces? Elias: That ‘Little Black Dress’,

great heels…these could be considered timeless. But again, how these components are worn, intrigues me more. ET&T: What fashion trends are you particularly obsessed with, if any? Elias: Too many! I’m excited and exhilarated by the immense output by the constantly emerging designers and established houses the world over. Creativity is alive and well! ET&T: Where do you see the Peter Elias brand within the next 5 years?

ET&T: How do you determine what pieces should be featured in your outlets? Elias: Because we appeal to a wide range of clients, our outlets stock more than our own product, we carry other labels and various price points that satisfy the needs of many. So it’s a function more about addressing the client’s needs. ET&T: What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers? Elias: Stay the course and never give up! ET&T: Who inspires you the most in the fashion industry? Elias: Wow… the blue sky, music…all sorts of inspirations occur all day long. Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel and many of the greats created my awareness and thirst, but sometimes I see brilliance everywhere I look. It’s really interesting as pleasing clients is inspiring and satisfying.

CELEB PROFILE

MUHAMMAD ALI

Name: Muhammad Ali Age: Deceased at 74 (January 17, 1942 – 3 June, 2016) Profession: Claim to fame: Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) was an American former heavyweight champion boxer and one of the greatest sporting figures of the 20th century. An Olympic gold medalist and the first fighter to capture the heavyweight title three times, Ali won 56 times in his 21-year professional career. Ali’s outspokenness on issues of race, religion and politics made him a controversial figure during his career, and the heavyweight’s quips and taunts were as quick as his fists. Born Cassius Clay Jr., Ali changed his name in 1964 after joining the Nation of Islam. Citing his religious beliefs, he refused military induction and as a result was stripped of his heavyweight championship and banned from boxing for three years during the prime of his career. Parkinson’s syndrome

later severely impaired Ali’s motor skills and speech, but he remained active as a humanitarian and goodwill ambassador. Ali was hospitalized in Scottsdale on June 2, 2016, with a respiratory illness. Though his condition was initially described as "fair", his health worsened and he died the following day, aged 74, from septic shock.
