LOCAL CELEBRITIES SHARE THEIR NEWS HEALTHY EATING TIPS Written by Daniela Nandlal
E
veryone wants the celebrity physique, but so few of us do what it takes to achieve and maintain it. We sought out some fit local and regional celebrities to get some insight into what they consume to stay in the shape they’re in. Here’s what they had to say.
Vincentian soca and reggae artiste, Problem Child revealed that there is not a secret to weight loss, but rather it is a mix of discipline and consistency in healthy eating habits. His breakfast usually consists of an egg white omelette with grilled chicken breasts, tomatoes and green peppers. In addition to this, he also has two slices of whole-wheat toast and some fruit on the side. This meal is usually complimented with water or coffee, no sugar. As for snacks, he admitted that he is not a huge fan although if he does have any, it would be limited to whole grain or protein bars. He does try to have three main meals per day (with fewer carbohydrates as the day goes on) with healthy snacks between each meal, but due to his schedule he admitted that this is not always possible. Therefore, he tries to stop by juice bars and pick up protein shakes and smoothies as healthy alternatives. Does that then mean that he does not eat any junk food? Problem Child says definitely not! He believes that cheat days are important and usually eats whatever he
craves on that particular day. “Just a few weeks ago I had jumbo Sprite and an entire pizza! I don't have a specific time period in which I do it but I know it's not too often,” he said.
International soca monarch breakout artiste, Jadel Legere was also happy to share with us her healthy eating tips. Legere admitted that her love for cooking helps her stay creative within the kitchen. Her breakfast menu can range from an egg white omelette, scrambled eggs or sautéed pears, apples, tomatoes, purple onions with olive oil, mushrooms, baby arugula and tea. Other times, she simply invents recipes with eggplants dipped in egg and stir fried with fat free olive oil spray or bananas in rolled oats, cinnamon, brown sugar with butter in a skillet. Lunch can include provisions such as green figs, sweet potatoes and plantains. While meat options can vary from salted fish, smoke herring, fish, steak and chicken breast, none of which must be fried. In addition to this, she tries to eat lots of vegetables, soups, salads and red fish broth. Dinner choices can be blended fruits; oatmeal with almond milk, a Greek salad or chickpeas salad. She noted that, feta cheese, olives and
apples are a must have in any of her salads. As for snacking options, the soca artiste tries to keep it healthy by opting for baking flourless cookies, baked apples (which she calls apple crisps), almond nuts with raisins, yogurt, granola, protein chocolate bars and fiber bars. On busy days, she tries to avoid having unhealthy foods by bringing along fiber bars, water and homemade smoothies. She admits that this can satisfy her hunger cravings for hours. As for cheat meals, she’s a big fan of carrot cake, Indian sweets and white chocolate, all of which she eats in moderation. However she does try to make a habit of satisfying her cravings with healthier alternatives. For instance, instead of having a chocolate milkshake she would combine protein chocolate powder with almond milk. She admitted that not only does it satisfy her sweet tooth cravings but it is also very delicious.
Celebrity chef, Jason Peru also shared some tips on healthy eating. For breakfast, he suggests adding two tablespoons of granola or even steel cut oats to six ounces of your favourite Yogurt, thus adding more fibre and protein to your meal. As for snacking options, Peru recommends freezing seedless

grapes and chunks of watermelon in airtight containers. He says this is an ideal way to satisfy sweet tooth cravings while ensuring you receive the necessary vitamins and nutrients these fruits offer. Another healthy snack option, especially for those who are going to the gym and tend to get hungry really quickly, is to cut up strips of cucumbers, carrots, and small pieces of raw pumpkin, and take it while you are out. To make it even more enjoyable, Peru recommends using 2 Tbps of Low Fat Ranch dressing as a dip. As for grain options, he notes that barley, quinoa and couscous are all great sources of protein and fibre and should be incorporated in meals. In addition to these grains, another great option is a grain that is dominating the health market today called Farro, also known as Spelt. According to Peru, this grain is not only a super food laden with high protein, but it is very low in calories and proves to be a great substitute for pasta as it has a similar mouth feel. Lastly, instead of indulging in sugary treats such as ice cream, try homemade ice popsicles instead. To do this, Peru recommends freezing your smoothies into small popsicle moulds and sticking a palette in them. That way, when it’s hot and you’re feeling for ice cream, you can replace it with a fresh and healthy banana/strawberry smoothie popsicle instead.

LOCAL BRENDON NOT SWEATING OVER SUCCESS NEWS THANKS TO SPIRITUALITY
L
ocal entertainer Brendon Daniel knows about overcoming adversity. The Gonzales, Belmont native grew up being exposed to crime at an early age and became victim to gun violence. Being shot actually spurred Brendon to want to make a difference with music since he knew the impact the empowering words of others had on him as he dealt with living with bullets inside of him. That is exactly what he did. He developed his spirituality and used his voice to make a difference with songs of love and inspiration. Daniel is known for making melodious odes to the ladies such as his releases Latin lover and Doh Stop D Ting. However, the artiste decided to step away from singing about the ladies and create what he terms “more reality based tunes that people would be able to relate to
especially in this time of recession.” This brings us to his latest release entitled Doh Sweat It. The groovy Stadic-produced track speaks to overcoming obstacles by having the right frame of mind. While T&T’s airwaves are being bombarded with foreign billboard releases, Brendon’s tune has been well-received regionally. It speaks to a turn of the tide in musical
content as well as this song as well as Voice’s smash hit Winner proves there is a market for positive soca music in our diaspora. Oddly enough, the song was released during the carnival period, but is now beginning to generate steam. The singer believes the song is having that effect regionally because of the song’s relatability and directness. He also believes the nature of the content is giving the song longevity. “I managed to cross that barrier with positivity,” he said before adding “A positive message could never be seasonal.” It took this talent several seasons before he could make this mark. Brendon fondly remembers his introductory days to entertainment when he regularly competed at school calypso competitions as a Rosary Boys RC student and showcased his talent on Twelve
and Under with Aunty Hazel and Uncle Maurice. In fact, Brendon still believes he has a lot to offer in the traditional form as opposed to the soca genre he is currently pushing and so many young artistes eventually gravitate. However, he is riding the wave of his groovy soca success without seeking to pigeon-hole himself into any one genre. While his song continues to grow, Brendon is still working hard behind the scenes to ensure he has the appropriate follow ups. He is a member of the Stadic Studio ensemble and is also working closely with Saga Boyz (Kern Rose and Rayzor) on new projects. Follow the work of this artiste on the cusp of his breakthrough via YouTube, Facebook by searching for his name Brendon Daniel.

LOCAL BACK TO BASICS A NATURAL APPROACH TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS S W E N Wayne Nora
Written by Dr. Alicia Martin
“Spirulina we blending…A bottle a di green and it a make me clean… Gimmi a bottle a spirulina. Ah mek me mix up di roots with medina. Come off a tour an mi knee feel weak. So mi go a Hope road an go link Viva” - Chronixx (Spirulina).
M
r. Wayne Nora, herbal medicine practitioner for the past 15 years, frequent guest host on local radio station I 95.5 and owner of the Arima based business ‘Health With Herbs’, endorses reggae artiste Chronixx’s positive evaluation of Spirulina, a sea based algae, which is rich in nutrients, particularly protein. Noray’s entry into the world of herbal medicine dates back to his personal decision to utilize natural techniques in order to treat with his health crisis, “I didn’t get into this as a hustler.” Sharing that his late night studio experiences as a musician left him eating poorly and ultimately contracting arthritis, he explained that he was placed on steroids but does not regret his decision to cease this programme and adopt a more natural alternative, “I went to my old ‘Back to Eden’ book. I went to an alkaline diet. The skin is the largest eliminator of toxins so I had to put together a programme to sweat more to remove the toxins. All the pain started to leave me until I ended up pain free. No doctor could have done that for me.” According to him herbs, not pharmaceuticals have been used from the beginning of civilization, “every plant that was created on this planet was for the healing of the people.” It is his belief that herbal medicine does not receive enough support because of the challenges related to patenting natural medicine. Additionally the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not sufficiently independent or impartial given since it is directly funded by the major pharmaceu6
tical companies. We are all too familiar with medical product advertisements whereby a long list of side effects, often outweighing the benefits, are rattled off to the backdrop of soothing music and warm images. Noray expressed amazement at the public’s seeming disregard for these red flags and argued that herbal medicine is significantly more effective than natural medicine. He shared his own experience where he has successfully advised many clients on how to treat with fibroids and polycystic ovaries using herbal techniques. One positive feature of natural medicine is that it is usually complemented by diet, thereby

contributing to our degree of wellness, “your body doesn’t function on belly full, it functions on iron and minerals, and you need at least 90 nutrients in your body everyday so that it can function at optimal level.” Repeating the popular phrase that prevention is better than cure, he stated that more persons are contracting lifestyle diseases. This calls for a more proactive approach. The key however is to get the appropriate amount of nutrients in the most natural way possible, avoiding products which are generated in a lab. Given the likelihood that corporate society may attempt to capitalize on the public’s grow-
ing interest in herbal medicine, as has occurred with natural hair products, one has to ponder whether such exploitation would result in a compromise of the quality and purity of natural products. Wayne shared this concern, highlighting his use of Goji berries that have been tested and proven to be authentic and at the same time cautioning the use of China based natural products regardless of their relative inexpensiveness, “you can’t see the skyline in China, people walk around with masks on their face. Most of these products which come from China are exposed to lead and mercury and are therefore toxic. As it pertains to the legitimacy of herbal doctors and their ensuing advice, Noray advises that we are all obligated to do our own personal research. He however declares that herbal doctors are just as good as or even better than medical doctors given that the ability of a medical doctor to retain information for an exam does not make him/her qualified. According to him it is critical that we read and question information, “your life is not in my hand it is not in no doctor’s hand. Your life is in your hands alone.”

NO MORE INTERNATIONAL ACTS AT REGGAE SUMFEST One of Jamaica's biggest festivals will no longer play host to international acts, it has been announced. Reggae Sumfest, which has seen the likes of Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, TI, Common and Jennifer Hudson grace the stage, was recently acquired by Joe Bogdanovich who revealed that the 16th staging of the event will have no international night this year and no international act. The annual event, which has
been scaled down from three nights to two, will see Dancehall Night being held on Friday, July 22, and Reggae Night on Saturday, July 23. Reggae night replaces International Night. Bogdanovich, told The Jamaica Star that the over the past few years, the overhead costs to secure an international act for the festival had become too high. "The kind of cost and money that is spent on international acts has become prohibitive," he said. "We'd rather not spend money on the outside, but to support our own." Former executive Director of Summerfest Productions, producers of Reggae Sumfest, Johnny Gourzong, told the publication that even before the announcement that Bogdanovich had acquired the Reggae Sumfest brand, the board of directors had been thinking about pulling the plug on International Night. "The time had come where we wanted to rebrand, and with Mr Bog-
danovich's transition into the company, it was just the right timing to rebrand Reggae Sumfest as a Reggae festival," he said, adding that this move has been in the pipeline for the past two years. He added that it can cost organizers up to US$2 million (J$248 million) to book an international act, depending on who it is.

MAN CLAIMING TO BE PRINCE’S SON REQUESTS DNA TEST Carlin Q. Williams, a man from Kansas City, has come forward with claims that he’s the son of late music icon Prince. Williams filed a paternity claim in Carver County, Minnesota, CBS News reports, and he alleges that he’s the performer’s “sole surviving legal heir.” Williams, the first person to come forward with such a claim, is also requesting a DNA test to prove he’s the “Purple Rain” singer’s biological son. According to CBS, Williams’ mother, Marsha Henson, she had unprotected sex with Prince in July of 1976 at a Kansas City hotel.
Last week, the news site reported that a Carver County judge ruled in favor of the release and analysis of a sample of Prince’s blood for the purpose of paternity claims such as this one. The DNA from the sample will likely be used to settle Williams’ claim.

khenaton Simmons better known as “The Gentleman” Ken Simmons is the son of radio legend Phil "the thrill" Simmons. Like his father he has carved an indelible path through the airwaves to become one of the most respected voices in the industry. Since 2012, Simmons has also been working on becoming one of the most respected bodies in the industry as well. He has trained hard to become a top-notch fitness model and now regularly competes at major competitions in the bodybuilding field. ET&T caught up with the multifaceted and dedicated celebrity for a chat about fitness and more. ET&T: Have you been getting more looks from the females due to your body transformation? Ken: Haha, you know the saying, “Never judge a book by its cover” of which I totally agree, but the truth is, if the cover is presented well then 9 times out of 10 it will at least grab your attention, so yes, I have been getting more looks from the females. ET&T: It takes a bold/ brave person to be a radio announcer. Do you think your confidence improved even more due to your image change? Ken: Oh yes it has, even though most of us could say we are really good in one particular area, there maybe another area in our lives that we are not as confident, so to be able to properly communicate your thoughts and ideas without ambiguity and have your body and health in good condition, is a huge booster in the confidence department. ET&T: What food do you miss the most due to your diet restrictions?
Ken: Flour based foods. People who know me well know that I love bread, doubles, roti, cake, did I say doubles…oh yes I did (lol). I may indulge ever so often, but definitely not how I used to. ET&T: Who are the people who have been most influential to your success as a fitness athlete thus far? Ken: First up I must thank the owner of CLX health and fitness center for encouraging me to get into the sport of bodybuilding. Much props to my trainer for two years, Mr. Perry Jerome, who greatly assisted me in getting my body ready for competition. Huge thanks to the owners of Bodyglow Anton and Renne Mohammed for their sponsorship and solid supplementation advice over the years. And last but definitely not

least, my wife, Darcell, a chef by trade and owner of Chayil Cuisine and Catering Services who continues to ensure I maintain a proper diet. ET&T: If you could only listen to one song at the gym while you work out, what would it be? Ken: Ohh that’s easy, I am a huge reggae lover, so it would have to be “Here comes Trouble” by Chronnix. That song gets me moving EVERYTIME. ET&T: What are your health/fitness goals for the rest of 2016? Ken: I took this year off from competing to accomplish some other goals, so this year would be to continue to work on my weak areas (like calves..lol no shame) and maintain a body fat percentage between 10 and 12%
and assist others in reaching their personal health and fitness goals as a personal trainer.
ET&T: What advice would you give to the person who knows they need to start working out and eating better, but just can’t seem to get started? Ken: There are two things that will more than likely get someone to act consistently in any area of life. The first is great desire/passion to achieve and the other is serious or devastating consequences if not acted upon. My advice is simple, you know you should be living healthier and you’re not then fully investigate and understand the consequences of not leading a healthy lifestyle and it should help greatly to change your mindset. Please don’t wait to be diagnosed with a lifestyle disease. Then it might be too late. ET&T: How much does it cost on average (per month) to maintain your competitive physique? Ken: Last year it was an average $4000 - $5000 a month and now I can only imagine the cost with the introduction of VAT on more items. But all in all, no regrets… GREAT investment. ET&T: What are some of the things that piss you off at the gym? Ken: Ole talking or texting while using a weight or machine, not wiping off the bench or equipment after use and not racking back your weight are a few things that PISS ME OFF. ET&T: What is the most important thing your fitness journey has taught you? Ken: That the human mind is more powerful than we can ever imagine. We can accomplish ANYTHING once our heart and mind is fixed on achieving.
COMMON EXERCISE MYTHS EXPLORED
FEATURE
P
eople (especially Trinis) generally have a habit of listening only to what they want to hear. As such, it doesn’t take much for any sensationalized tidbit of info to become law in most minds. When it comes to exercise there is a host of myths that have stuck around for ages. This article should help dispel some of them.
Myth # 1: If You Are Not Going to Work Out Hard and Often, Exercise Is a Waste of Time. This kind of thinking keeps a lot of people from maintaining or even starting an exercise program. Research continues to show that any exercise is better than none. For example, regular walking or gardening for as little as an hour a week has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Myth # 2: If You Exercise Long and Hard Enough, You Will Always Get the Results You Want. In reality, genetics play an important role in how people respond to exercise. Studies have shown a wide variation in how different exercisers
respond to the same training program. Your development of strength, speed and endurance may be very different from that of other people you know. Myth # 3: Exercise Is One Sure Way to Lose All the Weight You Desire. As with all responses to exercise, weight gain or loss is impacted by
many factors, including dietary intake and genetics. All individuals will not lose the same amount of weight on the same exercise program. It is possible to be active and overweight. However, although exercise alone cannot guarantee your ideal weight, regular physical activity is one of the most important factors for successful long-term weight management. Myth # 4: If You Want to Lose Weight, Stay Away From Strength Training Because You Will Bulk Up. Most exercise experts believe
that cardiovascular exercise and strength training are both valuable for maintaining a healthy weight. Strength training helps maintain muscle mass and decrease body fat percentage. Myth # 5. Going to a Gym Is the Best Way to Get Fit. Research has shown that some people find it easier to stick to a home-based fitness program. In spite of all the hype on trendy exercise programs and facilities, the “best” program for you is the one you will participate in consistently.

PUT A HAND… ou know how Y sometimes people do silly things to
look cute and everyone laughs and says it’s cute and life goes on? These fashion missteps aren’t one of those moments. There is nothing flattering about bad fashion. Unless it is a jouvert-type event, dress appropriately.
At first glance, you might think we are highlighting the oversized white eyewear worn by the dude in the back. However, there are graver issues at hand with the guy on the far right of the pic. He is wearing a printed jersey under his printed polo and that is a no-no. His choice of accessory is also off. The red watch doesn’t go with anything else in his ensemble. Maybe he thought it was matching his purple tie-dyed jersey that also has stripes and print.
Tell us what magical powers the white powder girls so generously apply to their chest and neck possesses and we’ll give you a pass. Until that time, expect the handcuffs to be extra tight on those who continue to do what the woman in the photo has done.
