LOCAL CELEBS GIVE NEWS ‘BACK TO SCHOOL’ ADVICE
A
midst the ‘back to school’ hype experienced on Facebook, at bookstores, shoe stores and more recently on our nation’s roads, ET&T asked a few celebrities to share their ‘back to school’ advice. Comedian and 96.1 Radio personality, Nikki Crosby was happy to share, “I always encourage every one of them to reach for the stars! The world is at their feet… I tell them before they go to sleep, think of their dreams and continue to strive for those dreams to make them a reality.” Children were also reminded to honor the efforts of their loved ones. Dancehall artiste Pternsky also advised students to think about what they could do for the country through education, “see yourself as a person of change.” 96.1 DJ Stefon X Moore while also suggesting that opportunities should not be wasted, added that students should they should not let mistakes phase them, “everybody makes mistakes but the bigger mistake would be to let those mistakes defeat you.” Given the recent occurrence of teen suicides and other negative child related issues, celebrities offered relevant advice. Red 96.7 Announcer, DJ and artiste Richard Trumpet cautioned that, “if anyone makes you feel uncomfortable in any way as far as bullying or shaming or anything of the sorts do not keep it inside, find someone to talk to if it is your teacher, your parents, a guidance counsellor... ” On a similar note female soca powerhouse, Patrice Roberts advised that while obstacles would be encountered none would be too big to conquer sharing that, “…share your struggles and emotional issues with a trustworthy adult who can assist. I would encourage you not to harbor feelings that are making you second guess your purpose or importance in life.” Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ayanna Webster Roy emphasized the need to maintain a positive outlook,
“look at each new day as an opportunity for a fresh start. Don’t let your current circumstances be an indicator of what the future would be like. Pray. Trust in God. Hope is essential!” Singling out female students, CNC3 Morning TV Show host, Hema Ramkisoon advised that they should simply take their time! “Enjoy your life and childhood. Enjoy the freedom of school. Enjoy life’s experiments. You don’t need to know and figure it all out today… I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life until I was 21 and my path took a totally different direction to what I thought I wanted to do.” She also advocated passion before money. Echoing similar sentiment Jason Williams stated, “doing a task that you're passionate about in your work life is the most fulfilling experience ever. NADIA BATSON CREATES HER HIMAYA
I
t is quite evident that the Trinbagonian songstress Nadia Batson is cleverly building her empire at her own pace. The Soca artiste through her most recent project has added designer to her credits. Her most recent project; ‘Himaya by Nadia Batson’ is a non-typical Monday wear line. Designed by David Dewer and Nadia Batson, Himaya caters to a full range of sizes allowing women of varying body types to embrace the trend while enjoying maximum comfort. With the tag line of “Respect the Monday, Look the part” it is clear that Nadia is not here to play. Inclusion is important and she is a firm believer that all women should be able to revel in style on the road. Truth be told, for quite some
time Nadia has admired the beautiful work of many designers but
recognized that there was a bit of a gap in the Monday wear op-
tions available. “I’ve looked at so many Monday wear options and loved them all but the truth and fact is that I cannot wear them or make them work for me” shared Nadia. It is because of her struggle that she is making it a point of focus and she is confident that many others share the same sentiments. With five sections to choose from, the affordably priced designs will provide a balance between sexy and classy. Nadia and David Dewer have focused on providing options that are all encompassing. As Carnival Monday continues to Rival Tuesday in the department of creativity and uniqueness, Nadia is creating a space where individualism can also exist. Persons wishing to be part of Himaya by Nadia Batson can register via email through himayabynadiabatson@gmail. com.

LINEUP OF INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED FILMS FOR TTFF/16
he Academy Awards-nominated film, Embrace of the Serpent is part of the lineup of internationally-acclaimed films to be screened at this year’s trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff), under its Panorama section. The film is one of three from Colombia, which is the country of focus at this year’s Festival. Also in the lineup are documentaries on the lives of CLR James and Maya Angelou, the biographical film Miles Ahead, about Miles Davis, starring and directed by Don Cheadle; and Bear Story, from Chile, which won best short animated film at the 2015 Academy Awards. The 11-minute Bear Story was the first Chilean work to be nominated in the category. It tells of a bear who builds an elaborate mechanical diorama in an attempt to remember his past life before he was ripped from his home and sent to a circus. The story is an allegory of what happened to many Chilean families during the murderous reign of the 1970s Pinochet regime. In Miles Ahead, the jazz artist, in the midst of a prolific career, disappears from public view for five years in the late 1970s, living in isolation while dealing with chronic pain from a deteriorating hip, a musical voice inhibited by drugs and painkillers, and traumatic memories of his past. A music reporter, Dave

Braden, forces his way into Davis' house and, over the next couple of days, the two men unwittingly embark on an adventure to recover a stolen tape recording of the musician's most recent compositions. Other films in the lineup include: Dheepan directed by Jacques Audiard, a moving film about three Tamil refugees - a former soldier, a young woman and a little
girl, who pose as a family in the dire aftermath of Sri Lanka’s devastating civil war. Together these complete strangers try to build a life in a dangerous, hostile housing project outside Paris. The film won the prestigious Cannes 2015 Palme d’Or Award. Ninth Floor, a documentary directed by Mina Shum, looks at the 1969 riot at the Sir George Williams University, when six Caribbean students mounted a protest against institutional racism. Their standoff snowballed into 14-days of chaos, with riot police storming the occupied ninth floor, and a hail of computer cards raining into the streets below. Among the students were Trinidadians Paul Keens Douglas and Bukka Rennie. Ixcanul directed by Jayro Bustamante, focuses on the plight of María, a 17 year old Mayan girl who lives and works with her parents on a coffee plantation on the foothills of an active volcano in Guatemala. Although Maria dreams of going to the big city, her condition as an indigenous woman trapped by an imminent arranged marriage, does not permit her to change her destiny. In a life threatening twist, she is forced to go out into the modern world where her life is saved, but at a devastating price. Ixcanul was Guatemala’s first ever nomination for the Academy Awards (2015 for Best Foreign Film).

A LITTLE HERB MEDICINE COSTS REGGAE SINGER LUCIANO HIS US VISA Reggae icon Lucian had his US visa revoked following what he said was “an abnormal interrogation” that led to authorities finding a cannabis-based liquid in his luggage. Luciano, whose real name is Jephter McClymont, has disclosed the visa revocation, the circumstances that led to it and his plan to try to regain access to the US, on social media. “I regret to announce that whilst crossing the border from Canada into America by air on August 25th, 2016, I underwent an abnormal interroga-
tion during which my personal hand luggage was searched. During the search, a mixture that I normally use as herb medicine for my throat was found and after numerous tests was claimed to be illegal because it contained cannabis extracts. The herbal liquid was a very small amount (less than one gram), but, as a result, my visas were revoked and I was denied entry into the US,” he wrote. “We are pursuing all avenues to appeal and hopefully reverse the decision as soon as possible. Also, please note that this will not affect any bookings that I have in countries anywhere else in the world, apart from North America.” The singer apologized to fans, promoters, family and friends who had been looking forward to his performances. “I sincerely regret the inconvenience and disappointment that this will cause as I am also deeply devastated. Please pray for me while I face yet another major obstacle in my life,” his Facebook post stated.

In an interview with Vanity Fair ahead of the book's release, Springsteen also voiced fears he would suffer in the same way his father Douglas did. "You don't know the illness's parameters," he told the magazine. "Can I get sick enough to where I become a lot more like my father than I thought I might?" FORMER PLAYMATE PAMELA ANDERSON BRANDS PORN A 'PUBLIC HAZARD' Baywatch star and former Playboy Playmate Pamela Anderson has urged men to stop watching pornography. The actress and model teamed up with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach an author, host and TV speaker to write for the Wall Street Journal about the dangers of pornography. In the joint op-ed piece, the pair discusses the problems with porn being so readily and freely available, and the negative impact
it can have on relationships. They argue it has a "corrosive effect on a man's soul and on his ability to function as husband, and, by extension, as father". "This is a public hazard of unprecedented seriousness given how freely available, anonymously accessible and easily disseminated pornography is nowadays," they wrote. In the article - entitled Take the Pledge: No More Indulging Porn - they urge readers to "understand that porn is for losers - a boring, wasteful and dead-end outlet for people too lazy to reap the ample rewards of healthy sexuality".

CHOOSING A MAKEUP ARTIST FOR GRADUATION
raduations are memorable ones not only because of the occasion, but because the event is always documented via photo or video. No graduate wants to spend such a day in less than stellar condition. Therefore, many students don’t do their own makeup for the big day. Instead they seek the help of a qualified makeup artiste. However, the number of makeup horror stories can usually match the success stories. It is therefore important to find the right one for the job. Begin with a list. Decide what things are most important to you in a makeup artist and their offered services. Do you have a unusual requests and need someone who can handle the unexpected? Or perhaps you’re on a tight budget and need someone who can work within that limit, no matter what. Make a list of these important things for reference during your research and to take with you to your consultation. Then, as you begin your search, start with your friends and ask them who did the makeup for their wedding or another big occasion. Look at their photos and take note of how their makeup looked throughout the day and in different lighting situations. Did the makeup look just as good before the ceremony as it did in the last frame? Talk to your photographer about what kind of look you want for your graduation and ask them for a recommendation. Your photographer will be able to give you a professional opinion about someone in the industry that they may have already worked with. Use your local resources to research professional Makeup Artists in your area. These include magazines, websites or expos. Another tip to enhancing your search for the right makeup artist is to do a trial run. Organize a trial run. Wear a white shirt to your makeover to give you some idea of what a white background would look like with the colors she selected. If the makeover

meets with your approval, talk to the artist about doing your graduation makeup. Do not mention the big day if she does not do a good job. Go back another day and try someone else. Alternatively, you may want to call a few makeup artists in the phone book and ask the cost of a makeover. Communicate with her during your trial run. Talk to her about how you want to look. Bring photographs if you like to show her makeup you like. Finally, the importance of a proper budget cannot be overstated. The cost of a make-up artist can vary significantly. To be efficient, decide how much you plan to spend on make up before you start your search. Many artists list prices on their website, as well as sample photos of of their work, making websites a great place to start.

he YUMA vibe is an unmistakable one. The youthful exuberance shown by the faithful as they represent in the fetes and on the road is almost unparalleled. The supporters of the band were not let down when they attended the launch of YUMA’s 2017 presentation entitled ‘Origins.’ Great music and solid decor provided the backdrop for well-received costumes designed by industry leaders such as Crystal Aming, Keisha Als, David Dewer, Adrian Wilson, Marie Colette, and Rawle Permanand. It was like one of those good ole family affairs. Here’s a peek.

SHADES IN THE NIGHT AIN’T RIGHT
e don’t like throwing shade, but the choice to wear W shades at night left us no choice. There’s little else left to say. Just look at the culprits.
If we had to choose one of those emojis on his t-shirt to express how we felt about his choice to wear darkers at night, we’d pick the disappointed one. If his aim was to confuse us, he won.
Clearly this girl believes she is a celebrity because she is wearing ‘darkers’ to block the bright lights and flash bulbs of the hundreds of cameras pointed at her. Or maybe she just does not know wearing shades in the night is a fashion fail (no matter how wellput-together the rest of the ensemble is).
