Tobago Transforms for Jazz
T
he usually highly anticipated Easter weekend is around the corner, but all that seems to be on anybody’s lips is the Tobago Jazz Experience which follows a week later. The buzz for the event has been almost deafening in Trinidad as many are expected to flock to the sister isle for the extravaganza. As expected, Tobago itself is brimming with excitement in preparation for the week-long series of concerts. Many of the popular local destinations have been spruced up to facilitate the influx of tourist traffic. The event was strategically designed to facilitate stakeholders in all walks of life. It runs for nine days in several parts of the country to benefit individuals in both rural and urban areas. According to event coordinator John Arnold, “There are benefits to the Tourism Business Unit and this includes all stakeholders such as hotels, restaurants, food service providers, air transportation, public transportation providers and craft makers… It is about bringing people to the island not just to be entertained by music but also to experience Tobago.” No doubt everywhere from Fort George to Argyle

waterfall will be visited more often during this period. The draw of the event has been significantly heightened by a much improved performance cast when compared to previous years. John Legend, Keyshia Cole, Brandy, Tessanne Chin and Tarrus Riley are all booked to perform along
with a slew of local performers. Representatives from both the Trinidad and Tobago Port Authority and Caribbean Airlines have confided that it would be near impossible to get a ticket to Tobago at this stage. Similarly, hotels and guesthouses throughout Tobago have reported maximum bookings
for the second half of April. Posters and banners across the island are touting the event and many small businesses and bars are offering Jazz specials. The armed forces on the island are prepared for the expected mass of traffic and have already increased their presence to ensure a smooth transition when the time arrives. Where will you be when the stars hit the stage?
Miss T&T Universe Casting Set For May P
ageant aficionados and plain ole patriots alike will be excited to know that the Miss T&T Universe 2014 project will soon be underway. The competition, which is now being handled by the adept hands of the people at Tribe, will commence with a casting call for potential competitors on the 3rd and 4th of May, 2014. The buzz on social media has been growing steadily ever since the announcement was first made which leads us to believe the turnout for this year’s competition would be a large one. Some have gone as far as to request the return of some of 2013’s participants on the Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe Facebook page. Similarly, several potential candidates have taken to the social media circuit to

More information will be divulged soon on the process as we look to see who will succeed last year’s representative Catherine Miller.

Artistes Show Support for Beleaguered Kartel
n the wake of Jamaican dancehall singer Adija ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer’s’ conviction and life sentence for murder, there has been no shortage of public judgment to go along with it. However, Palmer has received support from several artistes in the time leading up to and after his sentencing. Various pockets of Kingston including outside the courthouse where the judgment was passed erupted into signs of anger and disgust with the ruling and military forces had to subdue several people who were on the verge of committing violent and unruly acts to show their disapproval. Since then, fans have flooded public places with placards showing support for the artiste and asking for an appeal. Social media platforms were instantly ablaze when the sentence was handed down as several artistes took to twitter and Facebook to express their opinion. Kartel’s female protégé Gaza Slim stated that Kartel was influential in her career as well as that of many other dancehall stars and producers. She posted these sentiments online and stated “Adidja means a lot to me. Life will never be the same.” Barrington Levy also took to an online format to

state that he will “pray for [Kartel].” Longtime Kartel rival Mavado took an unexpected stance on the matter by urging people to “Pray for Adi” saying that no matter the feud between them, he would not wish such a fate on anyone. Hip Hop legend Busta Rhymes, who collaborated with Palmer in the past regularly made it known that he was standing by his embattled comrade. He even went as far as attending the trial on several occasions. Canadian rapper Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham was one of several international stars who supported Kartel by donning ‘Free Worl Boss’ jerseys. Public opinion on the matter varied in Trinidad and Tobago as there were some who seemed happy Kartel was being locked away due to his destructive image,

lyrics and negative impact on the youths. Others chose to put his celebrity first saying that he has done much for the Caribbean and the penalty was too harsh. Local dancehall sensation Moses similarly shared mixed views. “The law is the law. If Kartel
is wrong – and he was convicted – he has to do the time. I do not support murder. However, he argued he was being framed. If a government wants to frame somebody, they can do it. I was taking note of the trial… Some of the evidence was inaccurate so there was some stuff up in the air. I just think it is unfortunate whenever someone with so much talent is lost in the system. We will just have to wait and see how the appeal process turns out” he said. Local singer Orlando was a little less diplomatic stating, “Yahweh knows… Kartel is very talented and I would never take that from him, but he tried to make a mockery of the Most High and Yahweh punished him.” Only time will tell how these events will eventually unfold. ET&T will keep abreast of all the action as it unfolds.
LOCAL ARTISTS CASH OUT OVERSEAS
O
ur local artistes tend to rake in the cash during the carnival season. The nonstop fetes, cooler parties and just all round jammishness seems to resonate well from a financial vantage point for several of the artistes especially those in high demand. Outside of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival, there are only a handful of Caribbean carnivals to dip their hands into. So how do artistes survive after the carnival season? Touring and diversification are key avenues that artistes now utilize as a means to stay current and maximize on the dollar. Artists such as Destra, Kees, 2

Bunji Garlin and Machel Montano have been known to tour the Caribbean and parts of Europe and America. After his heavily successful carnival season, one of Bunji Garlin’s first stops was Austin, Texas for South By Southwest. Following the end of our carnival season he was seen on

March 12th at SXSW, at Empire Patio for OkayPlayer and Large Up’s throw down (RSVP) and then appeared as a special surprise guest on an official SXSW showcase later that evening. Some have ventured into other entrepreneurial avenues such as Denis “SaucyWow” Belfon and Neil “Iwer” George. Denise has started a catering business while Iwer George has dived into the boat business and also owns a popular radio station. the essence of catering to your respective markets. He noted that he produces a variety of soca, fast, slow, conscious and has made the bold step to use soca as a story telling avenue just as is done through calypso. This is how artists should capitalise on what’s local to make the big bucks.

Wassi Says, Let Culture Breathel a c Lo Stop Commercializing The News Authentic Vibe of Carnival!
P
eople of influence are killing any semblance of our nation’s treasured carnival culture, this according to US born, Giselle The Wassi One Blanche. Her lineage is all Trinbagonian and her heart resides here, so when she speaks of T&T’s “Greatest Show on Earth,” she does so with enough passion to ignite a fire within the souls of those who listen. Year after year, for the past seventeen years, Wassi has made the trip to T&T where she has been at the forefront of major events, promoting them in the lead up, and then hosting on show night. During Carnival 2014, besides taking the stage at her signature events, Fire Fete and Army Fete, Wassi was seen hosting at Ladies Night Out and the International Soca Monarch finals. Her presence is unique and her spirit is the embodiment of carnival. With the season now over, the Wassi One as she is known, felt the need to make it known that she is saddened by the direction in which T&T’s carnival is heading. “The inclusion of so many people that don’t include ‘us’,” as Wassi put it, is one of the major issues that will kill the true spirit of the season. “This is our festival and I feel like there are so many things being done to divide us,” she continued, noting that influencers are using Carnival events to succeed at creating this divide. “The grassroots events are being weeded out of carnival to the point where promoters who have kept these fetes alive are saying they don’t even want to do these events anymore. These events were like staples to the carnival. That’s like saying I won’t buy rice, sugar and flour for my house,” exclaimed Giselle. She pointed out that it was unfathomable to her for there to no longer be the Fire Fete, Wasa Fete and Army Fete that she strongly endorses as 6

carnival staples. On the flip side, Wassi noted that these events actually help to market the soca artistes, noting that the all- inclusive events or even the specialty cooler events that cater to a particular audience, hardly ever advertise the acts that will perform. “When you hear a Fire Fete ad on the radio, it’s basically a major promotion of the artistes and their music. These fetes are built around the artistes of the season,” said the Miami native. She said the all inclusive and cooler fete promoters were smart for not advertising the names of artistes, and instead opting to market their brands and the exclusivity of their events, in essence ensuring that even if they choose not to have artistes at the event, they would be successful nonetheless as the crowds would come just because they wanted to be a part of the brand. With international eyes and ears becoming more interested in what lies in these parts, as the days roll on, Giselle said there is even greater need to protect the product that is Carnival. She however lamented that artistes too are contributing to the death of carnival as it was once known. Say-

ing that artistes are raising their prices and leaving promoters of these grassroots events with no choice but to raise entrance fees, Giselle explained that the more artistes charge for performances, the higher the cost to patrons and the less desirable the events become to the grassroots people who are unable to afford exorbitant entrance fees. She said even for foreigners who would love to come to the Carnival annually, it is becoming harder each year. “When you think about a person coming from America with a $2100 USD mortgage a month, $1,000 child’s school fee to pay, water bill, gas bill, lights, phone, cable….to come back down here and then give mas bands $1,500 USD to play mas again?”, she exclaimed, adding, “And then when you go to half of these events they are having now, there’s no vibe.” In an effort to expand on why she feels today’s more popular carnival events lack the energy of carnivals of years gone by, Wassi said one very significant reality is that the young ‘feters’ are cultureless. “These young people are cultureless. They are lost,” she said. “They are grabbing on to a
bunch of other cultures and making it their own. This is like little America, and you can’t even say that because in America there’s a strong Caribbean community,” said an almost enraged Wassi. She said she had heard on many occasions, DJs here is T&T saying that they couldn’t wait for Carnival to be over with so they could be finished with playing Soca music. “How could you say that?” she asked, almost baffled. She then questioned the rationale of the same DJs and others in influential positions on radio who then go on to play dancehall and rap songs that are laced with sexually explicit lyrics, even after saying Soca couldn’t be played because of the observance of the Lenten season. She also said DJs need to stop saying that the people, their listeners, do not want to hear Soca music throughout the year, because in actuality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Giselle, The Wassi One is indeed an ambassador in her own right- an ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago’s culture. Her parents’ involvement in mas and fete promotion groomed her for it, and now a seasoned voice and face in the carnival mix worldwide, Wassi’s opinion does matter. Her feelings are not based on money or entrepreneurship. Her feelings are based on a sincere passion to keep the authentic energy of carnival alive and to share the real carnival with the world. Hopeful that her heartfelt words will fall on the ears of the influential, Giselle, The Wassi One is optimistic that the real Carnival vibe will return. “We need to feel pride in what we once had and we need to teach the youths about the culture of T&T so that they become engrossed in the sweetness of the music, the fetes and all the traditional elements of the season. Only then will the world be infected by the true spirit of T&T’s carnival,” said Wassi.

riven by his passion and creativity for fashion, Miguel “SpaceBoi” de la Rosa entered the fashion industry by making and selling jewelry to his peers at the University of the West Indies (UWI). Besides completing a BSc. in Management studies with a minor in Marketing and a specialization in Finance in 2013, fashion remains his way of expressing himself as he is currently enrolled in garment construction at the UWI open Campus. Miguel is now the creative director of DLR Clothing Company, taking his passion for fashion to the next level. DLR originality and customization sets his fashion style apart from other clothing. “I do not follow trends, my styles are custom-made. I have a unique sense of style, I can turn music into a piece of clothing and an architecture into a piece of clothing. I love art,” said de la Rosa. Inspired by Soca songs for the 2014 carnival season, he custom-made Happiest Man Alive tees, Beanie hats, Pure Carnival Nutritional Fact tees, 868 and Born Identity Snapbacks. After networking and promoting his brand on Facebook and Instagram, these tees and snap backs were worn by Destra Garcia, Machel Montano, K. Rich, Swappi, Nadia and SAASS, at different carnival events, earlier this year. “Machel was seen wearing the snap back and Happiest Man Alive tee at Insomnia and Destra at Army Fete, was seen wearing the snap backs. As a new designer into the clothing industry, I felt overwhelmed to have my work worn by local artistes, said de la Rosa.” The goal to brand carnival as though it was a product, left de la Rosa and his team, which consists of family members and close friends, to work day and night for the carnival season.
Selling his clothing from his home is his only option as there is no physical location for DLR clothing company. “The idea was to promote the product, the most time consuming part of it was getting the product out on time and making my own deliveries. The Pure Carnival Nutritional Facts tees and snap backs were sold out for the carnival season. I like when I can turn my passion into profits,” said de la Rosa.
De la Rosa is seen as a role model by his siblings, as they often ask his advice on clothing before leaving the house. “When I am home, my siblings will call out to me and ask my advice on their clothing choices.” At the age of 23, De la Rosa already has plans to launch a full street wear brand collection by June 2014. He also plans to use any opportunity that is offered, to take his passion for fashion a step further. This young entrepreneur plans to marry his academic and practical knowledge to expand DLR clothing company and hope to own a fashion agency one day. He hopes to continue promoting his product locally then taking a step further to the Caribbean and eventually aboard. The All-Inclusive Effect
BEAUTY
O
ffering a one stop boutique which includes clothing, accessories, hair, nails and makeup, was not planned but became a reality for Charisse Constant, Jahyouth Guischard, Raelecia Husbands and Kimberly Blackman. This all-inclusive boutique includes Flattery Box, Terminal4HER and Salon chic, all in one spot. Merging different personalities, nationalities and individual sense of style, maintains this allinclusive initiative. With an increase in beauty salons and fashion stores nationwide, the services offered to allow clients to be fully outfitted while they attend to their beauty needs, set them apart from the rest. One overall trend that is visible throughout the boutique is that it offer clients options to match their beauty needs with their fashion style. Facebook, Instagram, flyers, word of mouth and referrals within the boutique, are the marketing strategies used for this initiative. “We build clients mainly on Facebook and our Instagram pages,” was the common response from the individual owners. Each owner has a story behind their success. At the age of, 34, Blackman the owner of Salon Chic considers herself a celebrity style hair stylist “I built a name for myself after migrating from St. Vincent, to live with my family in Trinidad. I started at the age of 20 years old after becoming certified at Michael and Gloria’s Cosmetology School and started as a trainee for that same school,” said Blackman. Specializing in weaving, short styles relaxer and colour styling, Blackman defines her sense of style at the salon. “I do my clients hair with premium products. I offer advice to my clients, sometimes the style they intentionally came to do, may not fit their facial structure and this is where my advice come in, where I share different style to my clients. I go for a celebrity hair styling look.” Husbands, 23, nail artist at the salon came from an artistic

family where she enjoys doing nails. Husbands, uses her freehand nail art knowledge as an advantage at the salon. “I do freehand nail art. This allows me to use individual and mixed colours to my advantage to add that special design to the nails.”
Constant, 36, the owner of Flattery Box Accessories is currently pursuing a Ba in Media and Communications at the School of business and Computer Studies (SBCS). She considers herself an entrepreneur. She started her entrepreneurial pursuit by selling
make up from her car. “I have a special interest for fashion and I do makeup. I have a retail license NYX cosmetics and I started selling make up from my car,” said Constant. She also threw a successful boat cruise named Flattery, which inspired her to open an accessory store named Flattery Box Accessories. She became the part time owner of her first accessory store in December 2013. Carrying a wide range of trendy, unique and bold accessories, Constant tries to satisfy her client’s accessory needs by importing piece from Turkey, New York and China. The name terminal4HER, was inspired by constant travelling abroad, at terminal 4, at the JFK International Airport. Terminal4HER was introduced as an exclusive ladies boutique designed for fashion-forward individuals by Director Guischard, 34, retailing only one piece of each clothing style at the store. He thinks that this sets terminal4Her apart from the other clothing stores. “I practice the idea of having only piece of the each clothing at the store to create an advantage to my clients that once clothes is bought at this store there will be no duplicate.” Terminal4her also offer custom order and consulting and guarantees new styles in store every 14 days. This is seen as an advantage by Guischard, for the store. With each individual 'sstrengths, they plan to take this all-inclusive initiative forward and market their products. They are currently working on an event for April 20th at Pier one Chaguramas named Spring Board.

Seigonie La Faye Mohammed
SEAT
T
wenty-three year old Preysal, Couva native Seigonie Mohammed may be half of a twin, but she has effectively done her bid to stand out in recent times having joined the CNC3 news team as the weather anchor. Her addition to the cast has been a definite breath of fresh air as many locals would have become accustomed to bearing with aging male weather reporters over the years. Such is the success of Mohammed in her short tenure thus far that rival stations have tried to employ similarly young female talent as part of their weather forecasting. Seigonie admits her journey has just begun and she believes that everything she does is for a greater purpose than she is aware of. No doubt, her current pursuit of her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism is one that will contribute to further greatness. ET&T was fortunate enough to interview the trailblazing reporter for a little more insight into her life away from the cameras. ET&T: What are some of the things that interest you? SM: Besides Chasing Floods, Fires and Natural Disasters with my sisters… My hobbies are way too long to list, but definitely dancing, anything involving Art and Craft and Drama. I am also interested in Wildlife Conservation, Media, Travelling and Learning new things. ET&T: Briefly describe a day in the life of Seigonie. SM: On a regular work day I wake up thinking about what happened in the weather while I slept. Secretly travel on a bus and observe the sky while on my way to work and when I get to work it’s all about building my weather report for the news at 7 pm (as well as weather updates at 4 pm & 6 pm). I literally don't leave my desk, except for the casual walk
ET&T: What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? SM: "Every day good things and bad things will happen to you. All you have to do is be true to yourself and not take it on." It’s the best advice I ever got and it came from my Mother. ET&T: What do you envision your life being like at age 30? SM: I honestly do not know, but I pray it is a good life.
to the roof to observe the sky over Trinidad every hour, until my weather forecast is complete. Other than "breathing, eating, sleeping weather" I watch TV and hang out with loved ones after work. ET&T: Use 3 adjectives to describe yourself: SM: Outspoken, Hard-working & Vivacious. ET&T: What’s your Favourite hangout spot? SM: At home. ET&T: Do you prefer sunny days or rainy days? SM: I prefer a combination of both: Partly Sunny with Showers!
ET&T: Describe your sense of style. SM: I like to experiment to find out what clothes flatter my figure and express my personality! ET&T: What is the worst thing someone could tell you on a date? SM: Probably that I need to find my own way back home. ET&T: Has your number of male suitors risen since your newfound television fame? SM: Yes! I have observed a growing male fan-base but my heart belongs to one man who has stuck by me even before the 'fame'.
ET&T: When was the last time you cried? SM: Yesterday, because I was happy to be loved by an amazing boyfriend. ET&T: What is the natural disaster Trinidad and Tobago is most likely to face and do you think we are equipped to deal with it? SM: Flooding is an issue we deal with every year and I think that we still have a long way to go before we can truly say we are equipped to deal with it. ET&T: If you could live in any country besides T&T where would it be and why? SM: Australia - In Northern Australia the Climate is similar to Trinidad and Tobago.

Las Lap Jam
oodford Café may not be a full-fledged W fete venue, but it has been the site of many a memorable event from time to time.
events
One such event that was held there recently was the festival Tabanca cooling party entitled Las Lap Jam. While Carnival memories are soon becoming more and more distant, this was the opportunity for a final foray into the jamishness, fueled by top-notch performances by the nation’s best soca entertainers.

Prez-E-Dential Cool Down
rez-E-Dential Entertainment has undergone some changes within their ranks but that has P not stopped them from putting in the work necessary to host a prime time event. The team did well to thank their fans for their support with a free cooler party at the Salybia Beach Resort. There was a strong turnout and good vibes throughout the event which began in the afternoon and finished at night. Of course ET&T was there for the action and we have the photographic evidence.

In Too Deep 2
EVENTS EXTRA e are well into 2014 and the boatride scene does not look like it will W die anytime soon. These parties withstood carnival so this slow period would obviously see the majority of them score. The promoters of
In Too deep followed their first outing with a sequel aboard the TQ. The turnout was far from great despite the dearth of events during the early Lenten period. However, it was a cool cruise for those who attended as revelers partied the night away to TITAN, S. Carter and more.

GTFOH (Get Those Fails Outta Here)
ome people believe being fashion-forward is a gift. Honestly, it is not hard. Trying to be fashionable can be more problematic than just playing it safe. While we applaud people who have the guts to take their style the extra mile, we are wary S of the failures in our midst. Don’t get too close to them; they just might rub off on you. Tell them get those fails outta here. This is what happens when a pretty girl meets bad fashion. Her faults are obviously the mismatched accessories and the visible bra strap. There will be no winking of the eyes to escape our judgment though. GTFOH!
This woman sleepwalked herself onto the Treasure Queen and started wining on people in her sleep. Look, her eyes are still closed. At least, that is the only way we can make sense of her wearing a nightie on the people boat. GTFOH!
Ever saw something so ratchet all you could do is steups? Well… steups. The ridiculous hair and jewelry will not be permitted.
