“No man should ever turn their back on their child, NEVER, there is no excuse, explanation in this world for that.” – Jaiga
T
errin “Jaiga” Callender is the father of two beautiful young ladies; Ressa-Rayne and MilianaLauren. As a popular personality in the entertainment industry, the title of “celebrity father” does not affect Jaiga’s responsibilities. For our father’s day special, ET&T Weekly had the opportunity to engage Jaiga in conversations on fatherhood and the importance of his role in the lives of his daughters. Making all possible attempts, Jaiga separates personal from family time with the latter taking precedence at all times. As a hands on father he shares, "I'm always there for my daddy duties, starting from midnight feedings, diapers, bathing, dropping to school and eveything else." Ensuring his schedule accommodates his daddy duties is a must and is never negotiable in his book. Without implementing scientific measurements as is frequent to father's day and parenthood discussions, we asked Jaiga to share his version of the best lesson a father can teach his children. His response warrants complete quotation and speaks to a number of societal issues; "I think we need to go back to some of the old school teachings: morals and values seem to be almost out the door and that's a very sad thing. But I still believe it is important to instill these values and morals in children from a

very tender age: Honesty - never lie to me or mummy always tell us the truth! Discipline - a wrong thing is a wrong thing and there are consequences for "naughty" behaviour, Be Polite - you MUST extend courtesies - Thank You, You're Welcome, May I have, Good Morning, Good Evening.... Communication is Key - come to me first, talk to me, it is important for your children to be able to trust you and feel comfortable coming to you about anything. That open communication and trust is so very, very important! Those are just some key points but there are so many more."
Following Jaiga's lengthy response, we requested he offer advice to prospective fathers and fathers who are struggling in their roles. For those considering, Jaiga describes fatherhood as one of the best feelings in the world and probably one of the biggest roles a man would ever have in his life. For those struggling, in their situation Jaiga recognizes recovery as the important factor by saying, "I know circumstances sometimes make you feel that the only way out is to turn your back and disregard, that should never be a thought, your child is dependent on
you and looks to you for that security and comfort." He preaches that the scar of a father turning away from his children can affect the way problems are dealt with. As far as rewards, joys and cherised memories of fatherhood, Jaiga noted the joy and excitement expressed by his children when he is greeted, the time he held and laid eyes on his daughters as well as reasoning and negotiations between him and his older daughter. To Jaiga, we applaud you for being an active, involved and examplory father. We at ET&T Weekly extend Happy Father's day to Jaiga and all the fathers in Trinidad and Tobago and the world by extension.

he finalists of the 2014 Miss T&T Universe competition have been announced and the process of finding the perfect delegate is underway. The May 3rd-4th screenings for the show uncovered a bevy of beautiful faces with varying levels of modeling and pageant experience. The final 24 will now compete in the popular reality TV format instituted by the Tribe committee who has been running the show for the last two years. ET&T caught up with Tribe representative Leah Marie Guevara who shared that there would be a few new additions to the series this year. She said the show has teamed up with The Power of Beauty Ltd which is a company focused on the professional development and education of artists in creative industries. As such, the delegates will work along with highly skilled motivational speakers and image consultants on their journey. Guevara was coy about add-

the time frame. Previous Miss Trinidad and Tobago pageants have suffered from a lack of corporate and state funding to ensure the country’s success. ET&T asked Guevara if the new reality TV format made the program more sustainable by being able to gen-

We still have to cover the cost of production for the reality show. However, once we can cover costs we are good. We are not in this to make a profit,” she said. Guevara added that she is confident that things will only get better with time. “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” she stated optimistically. ast month’s untimely murder of Dana Seetahal was a grim reminder that sweet T&T is slowly losing its flavor thanks to the scourge of crime. The criminal element has affected Trinidad and Tobago in more ways than we would like to mention and celebrities are not immune from sharing their thoughts. Here, three popular male figures spoke on the situation and possible ways to remedy it.

Local Hip Hop artist and videographer Ill Payne has had his share of hardcore moments on wax, but when confronted with the topic showed that he is just as concerned as the rest of society. In fact, he stated that his
Celebrities Speak Out On Crime next project is one of upliftment due to the current negativity nationwide. “Funny we should be talking about this. My next single entitled “Baby G” is actually about youths growing up without father figures and going astray. I’m in the process of shooting a video for it. In terms of curbing crime, it is possible, but unlikely. It has to be an individual choice to change. People have to educate themselves not just at school, but overall. I have a saying “Get money and do good” which speaks to doing what is necessary to get out of the ghetto without doing wrong and making each other better,” said Payne.

athers appreciate gifts at Father’s Day too. While men may not wear their emotions on their sleeves as much as women do, a serious father does what is necessary to make his family feel safe and loved. Therefore, a little reciprocation can’t hurt. ET&T sought the advice of experts in their respective fields to find out what gifts would be the best options instead of the usual drab dad gifts. Guys love cars, so it’s no surprise that auto-accessories and detailing would make for great gift choices. Elizabeth, a representative of Auto-Village in El Socorro said the big sellers are accessories for pickups. “Everyone is into these big trucks and pickups now so a lot of people are looking for tray covers and bed-liners. Cellular Outlet brand. He stated that while iPad’s and tablets are popular, the male demographic is more interested in the smartphones. “The Samsung lovers will be looking for the S4 Active and The S5. Those are the hot sellers right now for the guys. The iPhone is also a good option,” he stated. If your dad is not a tech-buff
and auto accessories are not his thing, maybe he prefers to sit back with a good drink and a cigar. If so, a trip to the Naughty Grape might help you find the perfect aged scotch or cured Cuban. The finest distilled treats and gourmet cheeses are available there. Other fine options are colognes, or even tickets to his favourite sporting event. It’s time to stop it with the socks and underwear. After all, you need room for a bogus gift at Christmas.

eople have long lamented the difficulties of establishing themselves on the local entertainment scene. Murmurs of a Music Mafia and overall closed door approach to younger artistes are replete in several corners. Now, some enterprising minds have found a creative way to highlight the true talent the country has to offer and provide a new avenue and space for these skilled up and comers to grow. The Project is called Uncovered and it has been generating major interest in several circles since its launch. Uncovered is a unique initiative conceptualized by A Millien Concepts to establish and market local talent. A Millien Concepts is a creative agency headed by Patrice Millien that is centered on the formulation and effective execution of ideas to help build and promote its clients. This particular creative project was designed to highlight budding talent from Trinidad and Tobago across a variety of creative fields using several forms of media. asquatch isn’t famous because of his good looks, but that doesn’t mean men should aim for the beast look to gain notoriety. Brad Pitt is equally famous for his good looks and we think all men should aspire to be Brads in their own way. Here are some guygrooming tips that can make you a cut above the rest. Maintain your hands: Dirty, long fingernails are a definite nono and require no explanation as to why they don't work. Try to budget for a monthly manicure/ pedicure once your schedule permits. If you cannot afford to have someone expertly take care of your nails, then clip and file them yourself on a regular basis. Buffing your nails is also recommended as a way to keep the healthy shine without looking artificial. Plus, be sure to wash your hands regularly and moisturize them to protect them and keep them soft and right after doing all your manly duties.

Something to sniff at: Smell good, but don’t go overboard with the cologne. Dousing yourself with strong smelling perfume is not the trick. Be especially careful after using strong smelling toiletries. Just pick one cologne and stick with it. Don’t use different smelling soaps, lotions and then apply cologne because the scents could mix badly resulting in a weird smelling mish-mash on you. Don’t ever go cheap when buying perfume. You don’t have to break the bank to get the right scent, but get something that is proven. Cheap perfumes are more likely to react badly with your skin, and also it can never smell as good as the original. Bathe: Never underestimate the power of a shower. Be friends with the combination of water and bath soap. It will invigorate you and keep you feeling fresh and clean. You don’t have to have just come back from the gym or a hard day’s work. Whether you just woke up, are going to a party or just need a refresher, a shower is the best way 14 ET&T • JUNE, 2014 • www.amgtt.com
need to make sure to wash it with something that is designed for the sensitive skin on your face. A lot of guys cleanse their face with the same bar of soap they bathe with.
You should try to avoid this because it could dry out your skin and cause more blemishes. Instead, opt for a nice facial soap. There are lots of liquid face washes and foams that can be used with the same effect. Don’t be afraid to use an astringent from time to time as well. Just be sure to read the labels or check a dermatologist to see what is right for your skin. Tackle those teeth: Having perfect teeth is a blessing, but it also takes work to maintain the set you were given. The truth is, few people really care if you have perfect, straight choppers. The main thing is that they are clean and your breath doesn’t stink. Fight stained teeth and halitosis with regular brushing and flossing. It will cut down on your dental costs. The way you keep your hair makes a big difference to your appearance. This does not only apply to your head but body as a whole. Some people like hairychested guys. Nobody likes hairybacked guys. Keep your body hair trimmed and your nose and ear hair as well. Facial hair on brows, mustaches and beards should be kept in check and not loose and pointing in several directions.

Kevin Baker HOT SEAT
Kevin Baker and his son
R
adio and television host Kevin Baker has almost a decade and a half of industry experience under his belt. He also has a decade old son whom he cherishes even more that the job that he derived his extensive celebrity and earnings from. ET&T caught up with the proud and dedicated father for a Hot Seat chat.
ET&T: What next from you on a professional level? KB: I do a lot of traveling. I work at various Carnivals around the globe. I also do a lot of gigs in the US. I also have some big eventoriented projects that I am not going to disclose too much about right now, but I keep myself busy and I am always doing new things.
ET&T: What is the toughest thing about being a dad? KB: Well he’s a boy… Suffice it to say he doesn’t stay quiet. He is ten years old and he is at the age where he is trying to find himself. He is attending an all-boys school and there would be all types of influences around. The difficult task is trying to keep him on the straight and narrow and help him create the right personality and lifestyle.
ET&T: What would you say to deadbeat dads out there? KB: I don’t even understand how someone can choose to be an absentee father. I think it is a serious sign of immaturity and ungodliness. How can you look at what two people have produced and not feel a change within? I don’t think there is any message I can give deadbeat dads because there is something psychologically wrong with them.
ET&T: What’s the most difficult period you had to endure as a father? KB: He got five stitches a couple weeks ago from doing something he wasn’t supposed to do at school. To get a phone call from the school saying he’s injured and having to make that long drive from Port-of-Spain to the east not knowing what to expect is hard. Dealing with these situations really tests you as a father. ET&T: What are the keys to building a good family? KB: From a relationship stance it is important to know that both the man and the woman are a team and they should not try to change each other. Commitment is also a key especially when there is a child involved. Plus, as cliché as it may sound, God is the most important element. The family that prays together stays together. ET&T: How hard is it to maintain a family with the influx of groupies brought
family with him and ensure he can be involved and he doesn’t miss out. Some don’t like the idea of being called role models, but they understand their position in life and try to maintain a positive image regardless.
on by your celebrity status? KB: It is very hard. It has become easier for me now after 14 years in the industry, but this job draws all sorts of attention that is sometimes unwanted. This attention can turn into distractions if you are not careful. Some people don’t take “No” for an answer and they persist but you have to know what you are for and keep your head on. I put family first. The nightlife can be tough, but it is important
to have your family understand you. Sometimes people put big offers on the table that can take my career to the next level but I sacrifice it in order to make time for my family. ET&T: Do you think there are enough role models in the local celebrity pool? KB: Yea. I admire J.W. I think he is a great family man and role model. I also think Bunji is a good role model. He travels a lot, but he has the finances to take his
ET&T: Do you have plans to expand your family? KB: I would like to add another child to my son, but I don’t think his mom's for it (laugh). We’ll see how it goes. In the meantime I just try to stay involved in my son’s life. He plays football and I try to be there for all his games and even training. I played football at various levels growing up and last month at a ‘fete match’ was the first time my father ever saw me play football. Parents need to be more integral in their kids’ lives. ET&T: Any last words? KB: Just want to say Happy Father’s Day to all the real dads out there. It is not an easy job. It’s not just about showing off your child and saying that your child has the latest pair of Jordan’s. It is about doing what is necessary to properly shape your children into the right people.

Drama on the Boat
he Harbour Master was the T vessel of choice for Drama on the Boat. No, there were not any
fights or blatantly obvious ‘horner’ woman bacchanal, but there was definitely drama. Some of the nation’s best DJ’s provided the perfect backdrop while the patrons dressed for dramatic effect. Coolers came aboard filled and left empty. All in all, the atmosphere was a memorable one and this party was a testament that boatrides are still alive and kicking in 2014.

Crave: “Gone Nuts”
EVENTS EXTRA he Coconut Cove Beach Resort in T Manzanilla was the venue for this wet and wassy adventure. No doubt the title
would have been a pun on the venue’s name, but some people took it way more literally and acted like they lost their minds in the name of fun. Rotating waists and drinks galore were the order of the night. The guys were vastly outnumbered by the females who came in sexy poolside fashion. The event was fairly small, but the intimate affair was indeed something to crave. Of course it would not be a note-worthy party if ET&T wasn’t present.

FP Is Here To Stay
he economic crunch saw many companies downsize and as a result a lot of peoT ple had to look for new jobs. This is not the
case for the Fashion Police since criminals insist on keeping the squad employed. All of the daily fashion foibles contribute to a need for a vigilant and trained squad with the interest of the greater public at large. Thanks to folks like these, FP is here to stay.
Halfway through 2014 and the scourge of “Powder-pon-Nek” continues. The two females in the middle had no chance against the Fashion Police.
Should we have charged this guy for aiding and abetting? He is entertaining this miscreant by dancing with her while she is in the midst of committing a fashion crime. Is she in her shower at home? She must think she is because she is barefoot.
Posing inside a dark club at night with shades on. She should be welcoming the light because her fashion choice wasn’t too bright.

As such, Mayweather has formulated The Money Team (TMT) which is a group of celebrity friends he hangs out with. Members of this unit include Lil Wayne, Justin Bieber and previously 50 Cent.

Fifty Shades of Grey The success of the book means this could potentially trump some of the biggerbudget movies. However, it will most likely depend on early reviews. In the film, literature student Anastasia Steele meets a handsome, yet tormented, billionaire named Christian Grey and you know the rest. Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Jennifer Ehle and Max Martini make up the main cast.
